Let’s take a closer look at how the finale fares!

The Last Witch: Blood & Betrayal #5 by Conor McCreery, V. V. Glass, Natalia Nesterenko & Taylor Esposito (Ghost Glyph Studios) - Boom! Studios

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

McCreery lets Saoirse go into a familiar theme of this story. The writing shows her struggles and win versus self-doubt. Much of her strength comes from Brahm. The younger sibling’s optimism shines in clutch points. This proves true yet again in the early pages. From here, the road to the main even gets very short.

Readers get a double dose of showdowns for the finale. Nan’s confrontation with Hugh provides an equal threat with Saoirse’s fight. Pacing moves very fast as the action takes hold. It gives the audience a true sense of Saoirse’s growth and confidence. The battles live up to billing until they ultimately cross paths.

In this stage, the writing unloads on the pent-up emotion. There are a few scenes where you are kept on edge to where the Witch will act. This winds up concluding on a somber, yet fitting point. The resolution completes loose ends. Before bowing out, a little nod is given to readers on where things might lead next time they cross paths with the Last Witch.

Glass & Nesterenko lean heavily into the family bond between witch and brother. The opening pages show Brahm’s unwavering support in danger. This leads to a fitting acknowledgement of emotions from Saoirse. It serves as a well-timed transition to her fight against the Eater. Once here, the panels feel heavy with pressure mounting. The art reflects Saoirse’s new confidence in her reactions. This all leads to a steady close before dealing with Nan.

Readers see a drained witch ready to explode. Saoirse’s eyes tell quite a tale. Her rage can’t be denied. A well placed side panel instantly melts down the anger into nothing. Panels showcase the strain put on the young supernatural wielder. This leads into the outcome of Nan’s tale. A half page image speaks volumes as this portion wraps up. The epilogue gives a few different looks before leaving some mystery behind. A final panel puts a definitive stamp on what has been a truly thrilling ride.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Saoirse’s journey into magic proves to be a captivating finale. McCreery’s writing dives into the emotional baggage carried while fighting to survive. Glass and the art team weave in the drama in-between the magical confrontation. The series has been well worth the wait and you shouldn’t delay picking it up.

Writing:

This issue really ramps up the story and the horror surrounding it. Ryan Parrott does a magnificent job with building up the suspense and horror in this story. The interactions between Sutton and the Heathen are unnerving and really make your skin crawl. At the same time the mystery of who summoned the Stain keeps you guessing right up until the reveal that happens at the end of the issue. The more we learn about what happened all those years ago, the creepier and more unsettling the story becomes.

The book's illustrations seamlessly enhance the story's eerie mood. G.I. JOE #14 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” In the case of Cobra Commander and Duke, it’s a “partnership” of convenience. Destro set up the Commander to be killed by Ripper and his friend. Considering what the Commander has done to the Dreadnoks, it wasn’t a hard sell.

The X factor in this plan was Duke. While out on surveillance, the G.I. Joe saves his enemy. Now both are targets and on the run! This can’t end well for someone, right?

G.I. Joe #14 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire & Rus Wooten continues the “Dreadnok War” saga.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest chapter!

G.I. Joe #14 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire & Rus Wooten (Image Comics/Skybound)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson opens the chapter with the only calm moment of the story. Destro is full of confidence that his plans have been a success. The writing shows him at an all time high. In contrast, Cobra Commander is defiant in staying alive. His dialogue reflects a man trying to survive at all costs. Duke knows this all too well. Once a reluctant call is made, all Hell breaks loose.

Readers watch as the bullets start flying from here on out. It is total non-stop thrills from this stage. Commander never waivers as the odds become increasingly stacked. The same can be said for Duke. As opposite as two can be, there is a sense of duty around them. This moves into the closing pages. Once the calm mode sets in, the writing translates into a horror sense. Readers see another player has entered the game. It is a pivotal moment as a dangerous action is taken. How it plays out will be anyone’s guess.

The true winner of this chapter is Tom Reilly. The opening image of Destro addressing world leaders locks in his pompous attitude. Replacing Cobra Commander is easier said than done. While escaping with Duke, more drastic measures are taken. An incredible two page splash fires up the engines as the story takes off. The Commander’s half panel stretches his desperate fight to the letter. He’s not the only one getting some action this chapter.

Duke’s fight with Buzzer pops off panel. Readers will be all in for watching the attempted escape. Another gracious two page splash switches moment up perfectly. The chaotic scenes go underground in escape. Somehow, both escape the first round of combat. The art switches moods into a more horrific state. This builds off a fallout panel of the pair walking into town. Readers watch a full page image show the Commander defeated. A new player enters the field as there’s no rest for the wicked. Reilly’s art style is born for this series!

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Unlikely allies must find a way to survive as Cobra continues its hit-attack. Williamson throws caution to the wind with the writing. Reilly’s art elevates pages with each panel. The team is firing on all cylinders as this event continues to deliver on its’ hype! Don’t mis it!

Writing:

This issue continues the fun of this wacky series, well adding the setup of the story to come. Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti do an amazing job of building up this fun and crazy crossover story. The fun and lewd jokes hit their mark; well, the greater story that is unfolding makes the reader want more.

STAR WARS: JEDI KNIGHTS #9 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 9th issue of Star Wars: Jedi Knights from Marvel Comics!

It's been a very tumultuous time for Qui-Gon Jinn in this series set before the events of The Phantom Menace. Qui-Gon has been nearly killed because of a mysterious individual named Corlis Rath, a man he swears he's never met before. But what will happen now that Qui-Gon has woken up? Let's jump into it!

credit: marvel comics

Star Wars: Jedi Knights #9 by Marc Guggenheim (Writer), Madibek Musabekov (Artist), Luis Guerrero (Color Artist) & VC's Clayton Cowles (Letterer) is a great issue that starts to peel back the mystery on just what our villains motivations are.

The Story

Marc Guggenheim continues his incredible run with another fantastic story in the series. He's doing a fantastic job at keeping up the suspense, despite the fact that we know what's going to happen to most of the main characters.

We start to get a little bit of backstory as to what's going on between Qui-Gon Jinn & Corlis Rath and it's a fascinating read. We see a mystery reminiscent of Obi-Wan Kenobi's search in Attack of the Clones. There's also a great flashback sequence back to Qui-Gon's days as a Padawan under the tutelage of Count Dooku. To me this is where the story really excels.

We didn't get to see this pairing at all on the big screen, and the only real time we've seen it is limited to a little bit on the animated side of things. So to get to see these two important figures together is fantastic. You can also really get a sense for just where Dooku is at in his journey, and where he's going to end up and it's such a fascinating read.

The Artwork

Madibek Musabekov & Luis Guerrero do a tremendous job with the artwork in this issue. They did a great job with the flashback sequences and getting to see a young Qui-Gon was a real treat I didn't expect to see. I also liked the use of colors because it really brought across the gravity of what we were seeing. This series really has some of my favorite artwork in all of Star Wars comics right now.

FINAL POINT: 10/10

Marc Guggenheim pens one of the best Star Wars stories you'll read this year, and it's one you're not going to want to miss. Together with spectacular artwork this is an issue that any fan of Star Wars needs to read ASAP!

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #9 (MARVEL COMICS)

Even when Doom wins, Doom loses. Since becoming Sorcerer Supreme in “Blood Hunt”, Doctor Doom has used his new role to take over the world. Every hero on the planet stepped up to defeat him and failed. Doom used his high-level magic powers to make the moment a fixed event in time. Nothing can change this. Nothing.

There is one problem in Doom’s victory. Valeria Richards, his beloved goddaughter was accidentally killed while trying to reason with him. Few people matter to Doom as much as Valeria. How does he respond to his own actions?

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #9 by Ryan North, R. B. Silva, David Curiel, Travis Lanham concludes the latest Marvel Comics event with a can’t miss issue.

Let’s take a closer look at where the finale plays out.

credit: marvel comics

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

North throws a massive curve into this finale. Doom accepting he caused this death doesn’t not register. Watching the lengths he goes to fix this is very telling. It reflects his self-confidence. Doom also lets a small part of himself vulnerable to his conscious. This is a rare moment but adds to his complexity.

This point shines when dealing with a larger god: The Living Tribunal. The dialogue shows Doom’s demands to fix his wrong action. It doesn’t go unnoticed this “human” side of Doom is driving the scenes. The result is a costly one. His confrontation with Reed Richards dabbles in the heavy toll taken. Both characters have many thoughts boiling over. One’s emotions take over and leave the story in a very shocking state. The epilogue opens up another dangerous path. North leaves readers with much to ponder as a new era sets on the Marvel Universe.

Silva and Curiel flashback the relationship between Doom and Valeria to open. The two page splash of the present makes matters that more impactful. Seeing Doom face off with gods makes for powerful panels. It reflects his unwavering conviction to save Valeria. This escalates with the Tribunal gets involved.

From Doom’s presence facing off to the full page shot of the deal done, everything hits here. The fallout turns more grounded as the world reacts. Readers see many sides of the argument of Doom’s actions. This leads into a confrontation with Reed Richards. The old enemies spare no expense squabbling. Their stare down leads into a full page exclamation point. It’s impact is written on the final panel. There’s no doubt this story changes course for the MCU.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Doom’s greatest victory comes with a heavy toll in this phenomenal finale. North’s writing unlocks a side of the Monarch rarely seen in the MCU. Silva and the art team construct an impactful journey in a dark soul. Whenever Doom is involved, it is no mere story. It’s an event. This series lived up to billing so don’t miss the finish.

THE ULTIMATES #18 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 18th issue of The Ultimates from Marvel Comics!

In a world set up by The Maker, the heroes of Earth 6160 are doing everything they can to subvert his every move and emerge victorious. However The Maker is set to make his return imminently! So just what can our heroes do? Let's jump into it!

credit: Marvel Comics

The Ultimates #18 by Deniz Camp (Writer), Juan Frigeri (Artist) & VC's Travis Lanham is a great issue that sets up what should be the biggest issue in the series so far incredibly!

The Story

Deniz Camp keeps this relatively quiet in this issue, but it still packs quite a punch in how impactful it is. If you've been keeping up with the series you know that the end of each issue has had a sort of countdown going on, which of course is leading to the Maker's return. Well his return is nearly upon us, but before the inevitable battle begins one must first take the great plunge to prepare.

Tony Stark spends the entire issue appealing to the entire world, trying to convince the populace to join up with their resistance movement. Of course it's a tall task to do, standing up to the Maker & his council. Remember this is a world set up by the Maker, and as such he's set up all of the powerful figures of the world to be his own cronies. So getting all the help they can won't hurt.

It's an incredibly powerful speech from Tony, and it sees results immediately. If it wasn't clear enough already, things are going to get explosive and downright destructive. Deniz Camp is penning an absolute masterpiece and I can't wait to see where it goes.

The Artwork

Juan Frigeri is on the artwork for this issue & he does one of the most incredible jobs of a lifetime with the art. He brings such a level to the artwork it almost jumps off the pages and compliments the story beautifully. His pieces with the general populace of this world are particularly incredible and really convey just the importance of what we're seeing here. I honestly think it's some of the best artwork you're going to see on comic stands this week!

FINAL POINT: 9.0/10

Deniz Camp continues his spectacular run with this issue & delivers another incredible story. It's an incredible set up for what's sure to be one of the most anticipated issues of the year. Together with some spectacular artwork you really don't want to miss this series.

The two of them come up with an escape plan and get the other prisoners involved in said escape. But after they escape will they truly be free of their captures or will they just walk into another trap?

Writing:

This issue takes the reader on one hell of a ride, with a great twist ending. Declan Shalvey & Rory McConville do an amazing job of showing the desperation of the prisoners and what they are going through. Personal relationships and what drives their motivations is what brings the greatest deal of intrigue to the issue. Especially Billy and the love and missing of his wife and how desperate he is to find her. That desperation is really showcased in the twist ending, as we find out to what lengths he will actually go to save his wife.

Artwork

This issue's artwork is outstanding, truly reflecting the spirit of the Terminator franchise. Eoin Marron does an awesome job of bringing the despair of the story onto the page. The backgrounds and the world of the Terminators really give the story a lot of character, well showing how bad the humans have it. The action sequences are graphic and bring the emotion of a big budget blockbuster. The color choices by Colin Craker match the tone and look of the art perfectly, really immersing the reader into the world.

Final Thoughts:

The Terminator: Metal #2 is an excellent story with superb art that will capture any reader’s imagination. The bleak world that gets filled with the hopes of our survivors, only to have the rug ripped from underneath them in the final pages will attract any comic fan out there. This is a book that should be on your list for when you hit the LCS this week.

Minor Threats: The Last Devil Left Alive #2 by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum, Scott Hepburn, Ian Herring & Nate Piekos (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Oswalt and Blum open up with a look at the disgraced Searcher. The writing showcases her fall from grace with a heavy weight. It is not what Follis is ready to deal with. Time is not on the side of patience. Much like the mastermind she is, Follis causes a situation. This draws out a young upstart team. One member hits close to home for Playtime. Th reactions showcased hold little back. Chaos ensues but there is a spark thrown into play.

An unlikely voice proves to be the catalyst for change. Dialogue between him and Searcher finally sinks into the hero. It is a strong moment that steers events into a forward direction. This is tough to break the hold another unlikely pair wields. Brain Tease and Barfly takes the reigns for an enjoyable side-plot. Their partnership provides some comedic flair inside the fast paced drama. Once in the clear, Follis makes another tough call. This time, the person of interest is one of infamy. It challenges the nature of “honor amongst thieves”. The fallout eases readers into the closing point. There’s a strong sense of doubt as the chapter winds down. Fans wouldn’t want it any other way. Phenomenal read.

Hepburn & Herring recap Searcher’s time with a solid one page image. The panels move to a nine-panel grid to hit the key areas before Playtime appears. Their interaction is filled with tension and snarky reactions. Readers can easily sense what Follis is trying to do. The results get upended with The Action arriving on the scene. Their full page intro kickstarts the heart of the issue.

Pacing moves the big panels right along. There is a sequence that steals the show. Sid The Grid’s talk with Searcher conveys the appeal of being a hero. Searcher’s subtle smile tips off where her mind is leaning. It takes a seat to another face-off with just as much impact. Playtime’s confrontation with an Action member turns personal. Emotions are high with this encounter. It ends with a dramatic escape the art presents with ease.

The Brain Tease and Barfly heist moves around this brawl with many fan moments. Their interactions are priceless as clash of personalities shine. Barfly’s reactions to events can’t be denied. All involved know what the stakes mean for this to happen. It moves events into a more calm point. Knowing what’s coming, finding hope might be more difficult than thought.

FINAL GRADE: 9.7

Playtime’s frantic plans are met with more than bargained for with this chapter. Oswalt and Blum blend in past drama with current tense emotions for a monster win. DC/MARVEL: BATMAN/DEADPOOL #1 (DC COMICS/MARVEL COMICS)

Earlier this year, the “big two” of comics reunited for an unlikely team-up. “Deadpool/Batman” launched a new wave of crossover stories. This new united front sent fans into a wild frenzy. It teased the idea for more characters and impossible stories. The creative aspect has been one of many wins for Marvel and DC. They recently has a crossover involving Thor/Shazam & The Flash/Fantastic Four on their digital library platforms. This was followed with a push to sign up for the services, getting more people into comics.

Before 2025 wraps up, the publishers are reuniting for another special edition. It’s time for round two between the Dark Knight & the Merc with a Mouth!

DC/MARVEL: BATMAN/DEADPOOL #1 by Grant Morrison, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez, Todd Klein, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, Frank Cvetkovic, Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, Wes Abbott, Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner, Tamra Bonvillain, Dave Sharpe, G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson, Francesco Segala & Steve Wands deliver on another round of mash-up tales.

Let’s break down what is unfolding this go around!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Much like the first crossover, the book is jam-packed with an all-star creative lineup. This results in some show-stealing pairings. None fully steal the spotlight away from the lead pair. A great deal of this revolves around the vivid imagination of Grant Morrison.

Being no stranger to Batman, Morrison throws him into an unstable scenario. This is largely due to his dance partner. While investigating a murder under Amanda Waller, Batman stumbles into Deadpool’s path. The result takes clever shots at Wade’s “origin”. Morrison’s writing keeps its’ zip as the story moves forward. Readers watch as the zany side of their pairing sets a course for a deadly villain's grasp. Knowing Morrison’s history with said character, the mood sets into a comfortable yet dangerous tone.

This allows some breathing room as the story starts taking a different shape. There are many creative reaches attempted. Most all hit their marks. Readers that know some history will pop for a huge reveal in these moments. It spirals the story into a unique spot. The result is a fast finish to tie up loose ends. Ordinarily, this might misfire. Knowing what Morrison does best, the finish is vintage. It sends readers home on a high note until the next go around. You can’t ask for much more than that.

Mora and Sánchez start off events with a traditional look at Gotham City. the brooding tones are very evident in these pages. It ushers in the investigative portion of Batman’s case. This is the arguably last “normal” moment of the story. From here, everything moves to mirror Deadpool’s aura in the chapter.

The two page spread pays a small homage to a classic DC tale. It doesn’t take long before the 4th wall is shattered completely. Once Batman appears, the panels spotlight the clash in personalities. There is plenty of wacky Deadpool moments here. After the pace slows up, the main antagonist reveals themselves.

Readers are gifted an excellent two page spread for this intro. It opens the door for the story to explore the more head-scratching times of the Dark Knight & Marvel. A full page shot welcomes in this volatile character. Panels get extremely brutal in this fight. It helps to bring everything into the final act.

Once here, a new player enters the game. The shadowy figure will raise some eyebrows and smiles. Their persona shines on the pages. They throw the story off-axis. Readers watch another Bat-version crash the party via full page. Their appearance circles the end of the tale. Events close up with a solid near full page send-off. The bar was set high for art and hit the mark for this special issue.

The sub-stories are a LOADED line-up of creators:

Hellblazer & Dr. Strange (James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, Frank Cvetkovic) brings out the dark magic side both dabble in.

Nightwing & Wolverine (Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, Wes Abbott) re-unites the Eisner-winning team behind Dick Grayson’s best adventures for another classic.

Harley Quinn & the Hulk (Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner, Tamra Bonvillain, Dave Sharpe) is as over the top as readers would hope.

Closing up shop is Static & Ms. Marvel ( G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson, Francesco Segala & Steve Wands). The story pairs up to fan-favorites leaving the readers wanting to see more of their adventures.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5

The second go-around between Wayne and Wilson heads into weird territory for a huge win. Morrison runs wild with the writing to fans’ delight. Mora and Sánchez craft amazing images to navigate the complex tale. Add in the other superb side-sagas and this is one that’s sure to please all. Don’t miss out!

Now in 2025, Liefeld is bringing Shaft, Badrock, Vogue, Chapel & Die-Hard back home. The legendary creator is launching an all new explosive series back where it all began!

YOUNGBLOOD (2025) #1 by Rob Liefeld, Juan Manuel Rodriguez, Chance Wolf & Rus Wooton brings the action in its’ latest chapter!

Let’s take a closer look at how this debut issue fares.

YOUNGBLOOD (2025) #1 by Rob Liefeld, Juan Manuel Rodriguez, Chance Wolf & Rus Wooton (Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

One thing that is for certain with Liefeld writing, buckle in for the action. The chapter opens up with the team intercepting a threat in the Pacific. Xerxes’s ship has appeared with a deadly warning. Readers watch as the team does what it does best. The writing does an excellent job in showcasing the team to new readers. This quick synopsis compliments their extreme actions in trying to stop Xerxes. It might be the only slow point of the book.

As previously alluded to, the action doesn’t take long to start. Readers watch as the team deals with opposition with no punches pulled. Once arriving at the big boss, one member is made an example of. This works in instantly legitimizing Xerxes. The same method can be said for Vandel, Xerxes’s enforcer. Liefeld uses a very simplistic method in teasing what this group is about.

Some may not love the “Less is More” approach, but honestly, it works to establish the basics.Readers instantly know who’s the heroes and villains in the beginning. How this all fleshes out reminas to be seen. This all boils to a head with the final page. Another character makes a dramatic entrance as this story is about to go to extremes.

With the art, certain expectations are hit early. The first page pays a small homage to the original Image creators. This moves into a great two splash page team look. Liefeld mixes in a few more full pages images before the fists get flying. The team leaves nothing off limits as they deal with Xerxes’ forces.

Shaft’s strikes are as bloody as it gets. Wooten’s lettering takes these panels to new heights. Once Vandel enters the picture, things go from bad to worse. Readers watch as the strikes go for broke after a full page Shaft image. Xerxes makes a statement finish with his opponent. The panels reflect the power he wields. This leads into the parting image of the chapter. A dramatic return closes one door as Youngblood leaves no doubt they are back!

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

You want Blood? You Got it! The team that put Image on the map returns with a nostalgic feel in this latest debut. Liefeld plays to his strengths with the writing and art. The simplistic format still works to lock readers in from page one. There are many vintage looks woven in the fast paced plot. All build into the groundwork for what is sure to be another fan-pleasing go-around.

Gargoyles x Fantastic Four #1 (DYNAMITE COMICS/MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the crossover issue of Gargoyles x Fantastic Four #1 from Dynamite Comics!

The Manhattan Clan has teamed up with Marvel's first family

Gargoyles x Fantastic Four #1 by Greg Weisman (Writer), George Kambadias (Artist) & Jeff Eckleberry (Letterer) is an action packed adventure that has twist, turns & surprises from start to finish!

The Story

Greg Weisman brings his A game for this story, and it's a blast from start to finish. The story starts with the Human Torch, The Thing, Angela & Broadway all underground taking on none other than the Mole Man and his forces!

Meanwhile you have Reed, Sue, Valeria, Franklin, Goliath, Elisa, Brooklyn, Katana, Nashville & Tachi back at the Baxter Building preparing to help the group underground by preparing an anti-kaiju serum. But of course trouble ensues.

I really liked the pairings that Greg did in this issue, and they all work so well. I also liked the choice of villains in this as well because they all made sense and were well thought out. Admittedly there was a four legged cameo appearance from the Marvel side of things I didn't expect, but worked out so incredibly well.

The story really excels when it comes to the family aspect of things, and it makes for such a fun read. Seeing the kids from both groups come together and cause some chaos was such a blast to read. I'd really enjoy seeing a mini series run with just the kids, it would be so much fun.
The Artwork

George Kambadias does a tremendous job with the art in the issue, and especially with the way he draws the characters. The backgrounds really enhance how great the panels are, plus you've got the stellar coloring in the issue as well.

FINAL POINT: If this is the end of the Fantastic Four/Gargoyles crossover (and I don't think it is), than it's been an amazing two issue run between both issues. Greg's story is just simply spectacular and the artwork is stunning as well. This is an issue you cannot miss whatsoever!

Overall Grade: 10/10

WE'RE TAKING EVERYONE DOWN WITH US #6 (IMAGE COMICS)

It all comes down to this moment. Annalise Alderman had her world shattered. Her father Dante was “killed” by Agent Rook. The only thing keeping her alive is a guardian robot. Their escapades have been filled with violence, secrets and a healthy serving of revenge.

This series has been an insane ride blending in the worlds of sci-fi & espionage. All bets are off for how this wraps up.

We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us #6 by Matthew Rosenberg, Stefano Landini, Jason Wordie, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou closes off its’ initial run.

The time for talking’s done. Let’s jump to the review.

We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us #6 by Matthew Rosenberg, Stefano Landini, Jason Wordie, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

After five previous issues of sheer creative leaps, the pressure was on to deliver. Fans need not fear missing the landing. This issue lands in spades. The opening pages kick off with Annalise taking care of business. It is a very chaotic scene in comparison to Rook and Dante. Their dialogue is sharp and witty. Rook’s offer plays into the espionage theme. It is greeted with well timed distractions as attacks ramp up.

This builds into an explosive confrontation between Annalise and Rook. There is nothing held back in this sequence. Rosenberg sneaks in a few one-liners to add into the messy battle. Readers watch as drastic measures are taken with heartbreaking results. It spirals into a more grounded stand-off with Rook and Annalise both trying to escape. Their dialogue is fantastic. Many notions and themes play out here. This helps move the story into the final act.

Annalise’s reunion with Nina Pavlovna comes off with mixed emotions. The writing shows Annalise’s sorrow as she tries to keep certain aspects intact. This leads into a superb closing sequence. More swerves are thrown at readers with the spy element growing stronger here. This pushes a drastic action that changes the landscape moving forward to close. The epilogue/flashback adds another layer of intrigue into an already epic finale.

Landini and Wordie open with a fantastic full page image. Annalise’s actions show no mercy. The scenes are brutal and unapologetic in delivery. In contrast, Rook and Dante’s “discussion” echo’s their repour with biting one-upmanship. This serves as a break from the action for a small portion. Once Annalise takes back the attention, her attacks become more savage. Look no further than her brutal “dis-manhooding” of an agent.

This level of violence only escalates when she sees Rook. The panels display all the brutality one can think of. This builds into a dramatic full page game-changer. Once here, the use of smaller panels makes the dialogue jump out more. It is a face-off that neither side wants to cave to. This helps offset the daring escape from the volcano. Pacing slows down for the final act without losing any steam.

Nina’s welcome to Annalise is met with high emotions. The art reflects that in each facial reaction. Watching Annalise feel lied to swings her persona into a darker place. It helps to set up some shocking moments in closing. Red coloring helps distinguish the endgame of her planning. This pushes into a full page which dictates what lies ahead for Annalise’s next steps.

This is only topped by the flashback ending page. A full page image throws everything in flux knowing where we are now. The art never misfired this entire series!

FINAL GRADE: 10

Annalise’s revenge tour hits its’ final date with a finale that can only be described as epic. Rosenberg’s writing heavily lays into the emotional side of “spy-fi”. Landini, Wordie & Otsmane-Elhaou craft a balance of violence and heartache with amazing art. Highest possible recommendation.

Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories - Tides of Terror #3 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 3rd issue of the Tides of Terror story in the Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories series from Dark Horse Comics!

Things are not looking good on the Axil Research Station! An underwater research facility, it's been under constant threat since the story started and it's been sinking ever deeper into the depths on the planet Tordus. So will our heroes be able to save it? Let's jump into it!

Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories - Tides of Terror #3 by George Mann (Writer), Luis Morocho (Pencils), Ramon Lopez Cabrera (Ink), Michael Atiyeh (Colors) is an action packed adventure from start to finish!

The Story

George Mann keeps the action up in this issue with a great story that left me on the edge of my seat right up to the very end. Kit Fisto & Nahdar are still on board the research station and trying to save as much as they can & escape safely.

Between the action & the mystery surrounding who (or what) is causing so many issues on the station, this issue really had a feel of a middle episode of an arc from season 3 or 4 of The Clone Wars when it was on TV. And the way the issue ends? Just a classic cliff hanger ending that makes me wish I had the next issue now!

The Artwork

Luis Morocho, Roman Lopez Cabrera & Michael Atiyeh are truly a team that might be one of the best art teams in all of comics right now. The artwork in each panel is so crisp & well drawn. They did a really good job with Fisto & Nahdar and bringing them to the 2D format, and I really liked the way color was used to give it a sense of impending doom.

FINAL POINT: George Mann is crafting an absolute masterpiece of a story that any fan of the Star Wars prequels should read. Together with artwork that is absolutely masterful, this is an issue that cannot be missed!

Overall Grade: 8.0/10

Spider-Man '94 #3 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 3rd issue of Spider-Man '94 from Marvel Comics!

Peter Parker has been fighting battles on both sides of his life, in this return to the classic cartoon show from the 1990s. He's been fighting battles against the mysterious Morlun, while having Kaine following him as well. All the meanwhile he's been dealing with his life as Peter Parker & his usual drama with his family. But what happens when we learn the past of who Morlun is? Let's jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics

Spider-Man '94 #3 by J.M. DeMatteis (Writer), Jim Towe (Artist), Jim Campbell (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Caramanga (Letterer) is a great issue  that peels back the mystery on just who exactly is the villain Morlun.

The Story

After getting his beat up pretty badly in the last issue, Peter is in Morlun's clutches with seemingly no hope for escape. This is when we start to learn the backstory of just who Morlun is, and what his end goal is. It's a fascinating backstory that feels like something right out of the cartoon show if it were still on TV today.

Meanwhile, we finally get confirmation on what was teased in the previous issue. That is that Aunt May does indeed know Peter's secret, and that she has known for sometime. It's a twist that isn't exactly new to the mythos of Spider-Man but it is a surprise here. It's a touching moment between MJ & May as they share an intimate moment discussing just how they need to be there for him.

The story involving Kaine is interesting, and should start to pay off in the next couple of issues. However for right now it's moving along a little slowly. Oh by the way, did I mention Kraven is here? So suffice it to say the next couple of issues should be VERY interesting!

The Artwork

Jim Towe & Jim Campbell bring their A game yet again with this issue. The flashback sequence for Morlun is so immaculately drawn that it flows together so seamlessly. Also I cannot praise their work on recreating Peter, Mary Jane & Aunt May so immaculately compared to the animated series. It looks exactly like the show, and it really adds to the feeling of continuing the story.

FINAL POINT: If you're a fan of the animated series, you need to be reading this series. It's so faithful to the original works that it's been such a seamless jump into the series. DeMatteis has been incredible with the story, and the artwork has been perfectly drawn. You cannot go wrong with reading this issue & series.

Star Wars: Han Solo - Hunt For the Falcon #3 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm reviewing the third issue of Star Wars: Han Solo - Hunt For the Falcon #3 from Marvel Comics!

Han Solo has lost the Millenium Falcon and wants it back! Call it a midlife crisis, or call it wanting to relive the glory days but Han & Chewie are on the trail trying to track down the Millenium Falcon. Set between the events of Return of the Jedi & The Force Awakens it's filling in some holes we didn't know. So let's jump into it!

Star Wars: Han Solo - Hunt For the Falcon #3 by Rodney Barnes (Writer), Ramon Rosanas (Artist), Guru-eFX (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Caramagna (Letterer) is a great issue that peels back the mystery a little bit at what happened to some of our favorite heroes.

The Story

Rodney Barnes might've written my favorite Star Wars comic in the last couple of months, and I'm not joking! The issue features a number of flashbacks that start to uncover just what exactly happened between Han & Leia, while it also shows Han in a way we haven't seen him before.

I really liked the flashback sequences with Han, Leia & Ben. They're easily the standout portions of the issue, because if you remember we haven't seen what happened between Han & Leia between The Return of the Jedi & The Force Awakens. We saw them happily celebrating the Battle of Endor, and the next thing we knew they were avoiding each other & hadn't seen each other in some time.

I really like the story Rodney is telling with Han as well. So often we see Han in a light like he hasn't lost a step, and that he's still at the top of his game. We even saw that in the last couple of adult book series in the old Legends cannon. Does he still have it? Sure, and we see that in this issue. However we also see a vulnerable Han who is contemplating a lot and trying to find out where his place is in the galaxy. It's such a fascinating read from start to finish.

The Artwork

Ramon Rosanas & Guru-eFX both do a great job in this issue with the art. I love the way Ramon drew the characters' faces, because you really get a sense of the pain & hurt they're feeling in the issue. I also loved the color Guru-eFX did because it helped give such a sense of familiarity for the issue that helped enhance the reading experience.

FINAL POINT: This is an issue that you're not going to want to miss reading, because it starts to add some depth & explanation to one of the most famous romances in cinema history. Together with spectacular artwork, this is one of the best Star Wars comics in recent history.

Overall Grade: 8.5/10

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: TORN #2 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 2nd issue of Amazing Spider-Man: Torn from Marve Comics!

Peter Parker is back in college! No he didn't get his degree revoked, but rather this is a story taking place in the early days of the mythos of Peter in the 616 universe. So just what does it all mean? Let's jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics

The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn #2 by J. Michael Straczynski (Writer), Pere Perez (Artist), Guru-eFX (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Caramanga (Letterer) isn't so much a step forward for the serie, but rather a step sideways. It's not bad, but it doesn't continue the great start that the first issue gave us.

The Story

It's a fairly straightforward issue this time round, and there aren't any huge revelations or big plot developments. Peter is on the trail of translating the Proteus Maleficarum, that's the book that was almost stolen in the first issue, but the problem is it's in German.

While he's doing that Evangeline is confronting the man who sent her on the job to steal the book in the first place and turned her into something out of an episode of Gargoyles.

It's not a bad story per se, but there isn't a whole lot going on with it. The story's been started and now the chess pieces are being set up so to speak. I don't want to call it filler, because it's only the 2nd issue, but it's close to it.

The Artwork

Pere Perez & Guru-eFX both do a great job with the art in the issue. As I said before, this series isn't set in the present day time of the 616 universe, but rather an earlier time when Peter & his friends were still in college, As such, Perez & Guru-eFX both do a great job with how Peter & his friends all look and bringing them to look like those early years.

FINAL POINT: The story isn't anything to write home about, but the artwork is definitely worth the read. The series still shows promise, but hopefully they can recover from an early misstep.

Overall Grade: 6.0/10

THUNDERCATS: PANTHRO #1 (DYNAMITE COMICS)

After finding and saving Bengali, Panthero has put it on himself to find any other Thunderians who may have survived on Third Earth. However, his journey leads him to find out that things he thought were true were not.

Thundercats: Panthro #1

Written By Ed Brisson – Art By Dave Acosta

Colors By Arancia Studio - Letters By Jeff Eckleberry

Edited By Nate Cosby - Published By Dynamite Entertainment

***Minor Spoilers Possible***

One Man Rescue Mission

Panthro prepares his ship to go on a rescue mission, and after clearing everything with Tigre he’s on his way. As he scans Third Earth for signs of Thunderians that have survived he picks up an interesting signal. But as he investigates the area he gets sucked into what can only be compared to a prison. Once inside he is saved by a Thunderian named Grune, who had fought alongside Panthro’s father Pantero. Despite Grune not being impressed with his father, he is happy to have an ally to help escape the prison. But before long Panthro discovers that Grune is not who he seems to be and setting him free may be a huge mistake.

Not Quite an Ally

This issue is a good side mission that enlarges the Thundercats Universe. Ed Brisson does a great job keeping the reader guessing on who and what they can trust. The introduction of Grune adds more layers to the predicament the Thunderians find themselves in on Third Earth, revealing that what they thought they knew wasn’t real. Brisson really excels in this universe when he gets to create new mythologies and stories. The only thing that gives me pause with this book is the feeling that this story could have just been an issue of the main line series. It feels like they put this one-shot together for the sake of having it.

The art in this book is great and matches up with what we have become accustomed to in this universe. Dave Acosta does a wonderful job of showing us a new part of Third Earth and the dangers it hides. Acosta also does an awesome job with character design, specifically bringing the new character Grune to life. The colors match the art perfectly and stand as a testament to how good Arancia Studio is as a colorist. Every panel feels epic and really draws the readers’ eye in.

Final Thoughts

Thundercats: Panthro #1 is a good companion piece that shows the reader that we still haven’t scratched the surface of everything going on in the world of Thundercats. The new character and the situations that said character brings to the table add some new wrinkles to the overall story. This is a must pickup for Thundercats fans as this story will affect the main story going forward.

Overall Grade: 8/10

REDCOAT #15 (IMAGE COMICS/GHOST MACHINE)

Simon Pure. An immortal tool? Some might say. His legacy has covered many key moments in history. Johnny Appleseed and Albert Einstein are some of the figures he has crossed in travels. Last readers witnessed, Pure made a huge decision in 1814. Little did he realize what saving a painting would represent.

Pure’s latest escapades find him in 1909. A new day is dawning with Simon Plum enjoying the quiet life. Let’s see how long this lasts…

REDCOAT #15 by Geoff Johns, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Brad Anderson & Rob Leigh starts a brand new chapter in the legendary life of Simon Pure.

Time to see what trouble he’s gotten himself into now!

REDCOAT #15 by Geoff Johns, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Brad Anderson & Rob Leigh (Image Comics/Ghost Machine)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Is it possible for an immortal to start a new life? That is the question posed in this chapter. Johns and Hitch show Pure enjoying the normal life of a tailor. His interactions are very wholesome. Readers can sense a change in his demeanor. There is a sense of true calm surrounding him as he walks through town. Even family like seems like a Norman Rockwell painting come to life. However, as past like his is hard to fully bury.

The audience can see Pure’s restlessness as he searches for answers. This gets a welcomed surprise by an old friend. The dialogue with “Albert” starts playfully enough. Pure’s joy is very apparent in these moments. Unfortunately, that mood is dashed with simple words. The final page drops a huge bombshell that shatters any kind of peace Pure has found. There will be much to discuss from this moment to next issue.

Hitch’s art opens with beautiful full pages and splashes. The view of vintage America carries into exposing Pure’s new life. His genuine reactions beam as he converses with family and friends. The family moments are timeless. Readers will be locked in for this new hope. Sadly, the panels switch directions to a realization.

Pure’s search into myths leaves a puzzled feel to the panels. This gets pushed aside when a guess shows up at the front door. The half panel stares between friends leads into a full page embrace. Both carry joy with their expressions. Readers can sense the bond of friendship that arrives in these pages. This detours with the guests’ trying to delay bad news. Pure’s questioning to this portion leads into the dramatic close. The final full page unveils a long forgotten evil that rocks Pure’s foundation to his core. The art never misses with this series.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Simon Pure’s new life comes crashing down with a final showstopping page. The writing navigates Pure with huge highs until the closing act. Hitch and the art team deliver another incredible visual experience. Get on board now cause the new arc is gonna shake everything up for the Ghost Machine legend.
