PARANOID GARDENS #5 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

With Dr. Zerc’s plans in full swing, time is running out on Paradise Gardens. Their only chance to stop him is struggling to move forward. Loo has been getting broken down. Breaking the rules isn’t sitting well with the staff. What happens next is something readers are not ready for.

PARANOID GARDENS #5 by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, Chris Weston, Dave Stewart and Nate Piekos exposes Loo’s secret past!

Let’s take a deeper dive into the secrets of Loo!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The writing holds nothing back as Loo’s secrets are exposed. It is a strong presentation and holds a tremendous emotional weight. Loo’s failure as a guidance councilor leads to a deadly act. The escalation of the reveal will floor readers. Way and Simon never rush the pace in this area. The reveals keep driving a deeper wound into an already shaken Loo. When it stops, its an intense moment that leads into darker territory.

Once things move back to present time, the state of the Gardens comes into focus. Zerc’s actions are cold and unforgiving as he nears the finish line. His breaking of Loo sends her into a shocking direction. This allows the writing to take the story to its’ ultimate ending. With events in motion, Zerc unveils his overall scheme. This leads to an uncertain sense as the final act ushers in the final challenge for the Garden and its inhabitants.

Weston and Stewart peel back the layers of Loo’s broken soul with this chapter. The flashback sequences carry the grey coloring reflecting her sorrow. Loo’s reactions range from shock to sadness. Readers watch as she tries to comprehend what her actions led to. Its’ the strongest portion of the story. The art handles the moment tastefully while conveying the ramifications in an extreme manner.

The rest of the sotry deals with Zerc’s manipulations. His dealing of “loose ends” is given a near full page. Nothing is held back on the levels in which Zerc has gone. His address to the residents is blunt and filled with his bravado. Zerc’s facial expressions vary, leading the readers into his closing play. Even with Loo’s new “home” panels, the parting image seals the deal as the end is quickly approaching for the gardens.

FINAL POINT: 9.7

Loo’s tragic background comes to the forefront as the Gardens brace for impact. The writing delivers an emotional charged open that will hit the audience and not let go. Weston and Stewart orchestrate the strong visuals to support Loo’s troubled past. With one issue left, anything (and I mean ANYTHING) can happen at the Gardens now!

ARCBOUND #1 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

Actors and comics is a familiar and growing relationship. In recent years, fans have seen “BRZRKR” & “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return” as success stories of this pairing. At New York Comic Con 2023, word was breaking about another project following in these footsteps. The actor involved is no stranger to the land of comic content. Fans have seen him portray Eddie Brock aka VENOM in 3 successful films.

Paired with an all-star creative team, TOM HARDY’s comic venture has been building to a fever pitch. In November 2024, the wait is finally over.

ARCBOUND #1 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics) launches a 12-part sci-fi epic story.

Let’s take a closer look to see how things play out!

ARCBOUND #1 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman, Frank William and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Paired with writing heavyweights like Snyder and Tieri, Hardy couldn’t walk into a better situation for an opening chapter. Kai comes across as a soldier torn between ethics. On one hand his missions have all been for expanding Zynitec’s mission of acquiring Kronium. It’s countered by the feeling of senseless death and conflict. He is clearly given many layers for fans to fully encompass his issues.

Xander (his younger partner) is sold on a thrill of conflict. The writing reflects his lust for the battle. This theme carries through the majority of the issue. Kai’s internal struggles set off a domino effect of events. None greater than the final pages. At this stage, readers watch as the struggle for what’s right overtakes one of them. This leads to a shocking close. The status quo is ever evolving and for Kai’s future, this leads to new perspectives. It’s a solid building point with many miles to progress forward.

Smallman and William spare no expense detailing the high cost of war. The opening conflict launches readers into action with a near full page spread. Once Warr is introduced, the violence is amplified to new heights. It is not one for the squeamish. His ruthless attacks are blood soaked panels with Beaudoin’s lettering adding to the intense images.

Events calm with Kai’s thought process getting orders. The flashback sequences tease his past while dodging the ever challenges of following orders. Kyra’s interactions add to a more “human” sense in the sci-fi tale. It’s short lived as the back end of the book is nothing but the dark side of war. The art team squeezes in a few shocking moments with extra details added. It leads to a full page shocking panel to end events with. Suffice to say, the art team gave fans a knockout blow before bowing out on the debut chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

“Arcbound” brings intense action wrapped around a growing question of humanity. The team of Snyder, Tieri and Hardy delve into a solider’s conflict with fantatsic writing. Smallman, William and Beaudoin craft brutal conflicts with human emotions. It’s a great start for a long journey ahead.

HARD STYLE JUICE #5 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Will Kris Castro “finish the story”? That is the question readers have been asking since issue #1. The world of pro-wrestling is not without its’ share of liars, cheaters and dirty deals. Navigating the waters takes a certain amount of skill.

This is only complicated more when you’re investigating the murder of your own brother.

HARD STYLE JUICE #5 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, and DC Hopkins (Comixology Originals) has led Mona into a bout she can’t win or survive.

Let’s Ring the Bell & take a closer look at how the finish goes down for the count!

HARD STYLE JUICE #5 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, and DC Hopkins (Comixology Originals)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

It is often mentioned in wrestling that fans only remember the finish. With this story, McCormack closes this initial arc with a thunderous point. Mona’s quest for vengeance has thrown her into the fire of the family business. Before the biggest match of her life, the writing steers Mona towards the bonds of family.

King Castro puts aside the promoter title and attempts to resume his other “job”: being a father. The dialogue pushes Mona into a unique place before making her ultimate choice. Once she commits, Mona dives right into the belly of the beast. Her commitment to go forth becomes her greatest strength. It is rewarded with a solid close. Even in victory, the ending offers up a notion this wont be the end of Kris Castro. That is a huge win for fans that have become immersed in her gripping family drama.

López-Ortiz and Moore leave readers with no doubt that Mona is ready for the spotlight. The panels while she’s preparing indicate the focus she has for the situation. This is a stark contrast to King’s worry and fright knowing where Mona is heading into. The world of Deathmatch wrestling is unforgiving enough. Factor in a a family member involvement and things elevate higher.

The match itself is flooded with excellent wrestling sequences. A full page splash captures the violence and anguish of combat. There is no shortage of what makes Death Matches stand out throughout the panels. With the near falls, the fight carries the drama that comprises a great contest. Readers can easily hear the crowd popping with excitement as the winner’s hand is raised. It is complemented by the closing pages. The art team crafts a sense of calm until the final image senses that the ref’s decision may not be final after all.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

With the stakes never higher, Mona enters the match of her life with the confidence of a true champion. McCormack leaves everything in the ring with the strong writing. López-Ortiz and Moore deliver on the thrilling action with a mix of high energy and emotional art. This series transcends the squared circle into a conflict of drama even non wrestling fans need to read.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The crisis of the gardens proves add more layers to an ever evolving mystery surrounding Loo. Knowing she is being kept at bay by fellow staff members keeps readers guessing. The pacing of the story allows time for that to build while other events take center stage. None have a greater impact than the fallout of Dr. Zerc’s manipulations behind the scenes.

The writing doesn’t tip off too much involving the “big bad”. Zerc comes across as desperate, yet cut-throat to achieve his plans. The health of the Gardens is on;y an afterthought in this case. Allowing Loo to come and save the day casts her and her abilities in a new light. Her showcase leads into a sold closing act. With Zerc digging in deeper, the secrets of Loo may be the make or break point for what has already been a lights-out hit.

Weston and Stewart bring a distinct look to the visuals of the Gardens’ residents. The opening page captures the spirit of the Gardens. It is quiet, reserve and has a bigger story lying in wait. Some of the more “unique” residents continue to steal scenes, assisting the one-liners.

The flashback pages break from the formula. Using black and white shades is an easy segway into the close. Loo letting loose with her abilities comes across as a big event. Each panel carries a big weight and equally important reactions. This flows into the final page where it appears Zerc is ready to make his move.

FINAL POINT: 9.1

The grounds of the Paradise Gardens become caught up in the crossfire of Dr. Zerc. The writing keeps its unparalleled balance of humor and drama on a high level. With strong visuals that mirror the brooding themes, “Paranoid Gardens” hits anothe rbig mark at its’ midway point!

ASTONISHING TIMES: RISE OF THE KOKIN #5 by Frank J. Barbiere & Arris Quinones, Ruairi Coleman, Reese Hannigan, Andrew Cramer, Taylor Esposito and Dylan Todd (Comixology Originals)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Coleman fills the pages with a sense of danger and deceit. Yuto’s scheming comes to a head with a power play made by the Kokin. It instantly creates the uneasiness while waiting for the next move to be made. Pacing keeps things moving at a very fast level. It matches the frenetic action now kicking into high gear.

The writing sets up a duel that isn’t short on its’ shock. Once the winner is about to proclaim victory, Kokin’s dialogue gives a few key quotes before ending it with a loud exclamation point. The fallout ties up most loose ends, with a few heartstring pulling pages. It has been quite a journey seeing how the Kokin has evolved since day one. Knowing that key component will kickstart some interest to go back and read Astonishing Tales is a big win for all.

Coleman and the art team give readers one last chapter flooded with action. Yuto and Kokin’s build before its’ eventual showdown captures Yuto’s cockiness. It camouflages the challenge thrown down. At this stage, the action is in full swing. The showdown is met with a violent ending. Before bowing out, the art team brings the emotional wear of the Kokin to the forefront. Events close with a familiar face and wondering if this is the end or the end…for now?

FINAL GRADE: 8.3

PARANOID GARDENS #2 by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, Chris Weston, Dave Stewart and Nate Piekos looks to double down on its’ creative tale in its’ next chapter.

Let’s not wait any longer and dive right in!

PARANOID GARDENS #2 by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, Chris Weston, Dave Stewart and Nate Piekos (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

For this second chapter, the attention is thrown on the scheming of Dr. Zerc. Way and Simon have slowly started peeling back his true intentions. This chapter shows a cold and ruthlessness side to his nature. It is a contrast of what he has demonstrated to his fellow team at the Gardens. Zerc’s manipulations of a staff member and its’ outcome sends a loud message in the shadows of what lies ahead.

Way and Simon spread out Loo’s discovery mission throughout this chapter. She comes across with noble intentions but walks a very fine line of being caught. The pacing allows her moments to build for a solid payoff. It gets assisted by some well-timed humor from patients. The writing provides a solid foundation for both main characters to grow and set forth their journeys for a showdown forthcoming.

Weston and Stewart dive heavy into the emotional reactions of the Gardens staff with the art. Loo’s responses to her ever-evolving saga are filled with wonderment and apprehension. Readers see a prime example of this when she’s teaching a class and reacts to a flashback/Dream sequence.

Zerc’s planning works wonders as he blackmails the Gardens driver for his bidding. The devilish smirk he wears sets the unsettling tone. This mood flows into the closing conflict and disturbing resolution. Zerc’s distain body language in the closing half page panel sells the depths he’s willing to go. Readers watch as the chapter concludes on a very definitive point with more deceit en route to the care center.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

The quirkiness of Paradise Gardens steps back to allow a more grounded and concentrated tale with its’ two main characters. Fantastic writing and detailed art spotlight the measures Zerc and Loo are willing to go for what they’re searching for. There is nothing predictable about this story and that’s a huge win for readers.

MASTERPIECE #6 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, Ian Herring , Moo Meng and Josh Reed (DARK HORSE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

One of the strongest elements of this book is the consistent one-upmanship between the leads. With Preston, his motivations extend further than simple revenge. Emma counters with a well-staged front. Their encounter shows how much Emma has been forced to grow up. The biggest heist Preston orchestrated was stealing Emma’s childhood.

Bendis writes Emma as a confident and determined force. The play made against Preston is one that will catch some of the audience off guard. It works to add more drama to the layered attack at hand. Bendis constructs the build and tear-down extremely fine to maximize its’ impact. The conclusion ties up loose threads very smoothly. It plays strongly into the stages of an evolving character who’s just begun to scratch potential. Fantastic work tart to finish.

Maleev, Herring and Meng craft some impressive visuals for the finale. Two peices that will jump off the page show the range and styles of influence. One is a two page splash that has a computer painted appeal. The other two page splash is a heavy Mod/Steranko inspired feel. They stretch how far Emma’s plan dabble in attacking Preston. Readers will be locked in studying those images.

The breaks in coloring also help shift moods. Preston’s ordeal concludes with a bright glow. Readers will have to cypher what is unfolding. Katie Roots’ range of emotions are another standout point. The parting panels build up towards a strong closing page. In those panels, the art and lettering make a simple yet bold case on where things could possibly lead to next. It has been a huge part of this book’s success and never stalled in its’ run.

FINAL POINT: 10

Breaking out of her parents’ legacy and forging her own, the story of Emma Lawford concludes on a spectacular note. Bendis, Maleev and the team combine elements of mystery and intrigue to deliver to readers what they’ve been saying all along: a masterpiece.

HARD STYLE JUICE #4 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, and DC Hopkins (Comixology Originals)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Has Mona bitten off more than she can chew? That is the question McCormick poses to the reader. Her plan to work through the wrestling business for answers has backfired. Renault comes across as shrewd and cold. He is all about the business and little time for feelings. Getting his take on Rey’s death puts many themes into perspective.

Mona’s reaction comes off as a doomed attempt for hope. She sinks further into the world she was ill-prepared to deal with. This rings especially true in the final act. Seeing who is working who is a solid reveal. The behind-the-scenes look offers a dire picture for what lies ahead. It is one that will have readers on edge waiting for the conclusion to drop.

López-Ortiz and Moore brings their electric style to key pivotal points throughout this chapter. The opening panel of Mona’s reaction to Renault’s news is one that hits readers hard. It spirals into the shifty ways of a wrestling promoter used to “working” the room they’re in.

Mona’s response is filled with rage that adds to some fighting panels. None more jump off the page that a near full page “Blade job” leading into a fast-moving middle act. Once the story comes to its’ closing rounds, the emotions pour of King and Mona’s faces. Knowing the trouble she’s in weighs heavy. It all boil to a show stopping final panel that mic drops the chapter.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Welcome to the wild side of the universe! Way (along with co-writer Shaun Simon) delve into the quirky landscape of Loo and an eclectic cast of characters. The writing keeps readers guessing at what in unfolding. Nothing is as what it seems. From simple patient care for an alien to “puppet” face-off, this book carries a sense of wonder from start to finish.

Once a powerful patient arrives for assistance, the story gains speed. Loo seems searching for answers as we meet her. Confronting this figure changes her direction. The writing does a fantastic job of slow-playing reveals as things progress. Certain staff members get spotlight moments as things are bookended with a unique reveal. There are many moving parts involved that will lock readers in for the long haul.

Weston and Stewart present a very grounded vision of this chaotic scene. The dream sequence introducing Loo pops with a mixture of select coloring. Once back in present time, the art depicts the center as a “normal” place. The gathering area panels mirror the daily routine of the Gardens.

Loo goes through a wide range of emotions. Readers her confidently shaking things up to frightened about discoveries. This plays well to other characters as events evolve. The closing act pays great attention to detail as devious moves are made. It’s an impressive display that harkens back to a classic Vertigo era that is nothing short of enjoyable.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5

The insanity and complexity of Paradise Gardens will be on readers’ minds and pull lists after this debut chapter. The writing builds an unconventional story with many avenues to travel down. Sharp imagery and lettering keep things entertaining while more is brewing behind the scenes. It’s a debut you simply can’t pass up.

RODERICK AND THE CITY OF MORHIL #1 by Eduardo Medeiros, Bruno Freire and Deyvison Manes (STOUT CLUB/COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Medeiros delves into a few scenarios for this debut. Roderick is an easy character for fans to cheer for. The writing plays him off as blindly optimistic. This leads to his dilemma later. In the meantime, the city of MORHIL takes center stage.

The city is a mixture of fantasy and trouble. Roderick’s naive ways lead him into a sense of false trust. His “friendship” with Dritho fills up the majority of the chapter. Like any new story, there is much world-building happening. This chapter doesn’t escape that theme. The writing leads into a sharp turn heading into the close. With a surprising stat quo change, Roderick’s adventure has enough for readers to swing back through to see what happens next.

The art depicts the overload of Roderick’s faulty perceptions. Panels featuring his reading of Arnold, the Gentle Postman cements his happy attitude. There is a great page panel welcoming readers into Morhil. It comes across as impressive and imposing.

Dritro’s reactions telegraph the eventual twist. There is a sense of distrust looming around him from the beginning. This reflects some of the other residents of the city. Once the art heads into the close, it picks up on Roderick’s troubles. The closing panel is a full page simple splash that makes waves. It’s a great parting shot leading to where things head from here.

FINAL POINT: 7.8

Bright Eyes, Big City sums up Roderick’s venture into mystery with his debut chapter. The writing welcomes readers into the world of Morhil with ease. It is matched by the solid and subtle images leading to a twisting close. There is more brewing beneath the scenes than a simple delivery.

HARD STYLE JUICE #3 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, DC Hopkins, and Jasmine Amiri (Comixology Originals)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ramonita “Mona” Castro is a risk taker. Going into the family business of pro wrestling isn’t easy. Choosing that path to solve who killed her brother is a whole other story.

Last issue, Mona chose to challenge Gianni Thunders (a possible suspect) “to a f&^%$#!g DEATH MATCH!”* CREDIT: Emil Jay (GCW Announcer) After starting with a sequence with Mona confronting “Burly Bill”, the action gets rolling.

Mona is ready for the challenge as Gianni isn’t taking her too seriously. One head chair shot changes things quickly. If readers are not used to the deathmatch style, they will become familiar quick. The search for answers drives Mona to cross some lines. When the pinfall happens, there is no turning back.

Mona is forced to pivot directions in the bloody aftermath. With little options left, Mona appears to have one last place to go. Upon arrival, trouble finds her very quickly. Judging by the final page, a heartbreaking break may have happened…but at what cost?

HARD STYLE JUICE #3 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, DC Hopkins, and Jasmine Amiri (Comixology Originals)

HARD STYLE JUICE #3 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, DC Hopkins, and Jasmine Amiri (Comixology Originals)

McCormack brings out the pent-up frustration and anger building in the first few chapter in Mona’s match. Going into business for herself, Mona transforms into a vengeful combatant. The writing never steers away from the rage fueling her actions. Its’ fallout strikes a cord with her dad for many reasons.

Knowing what she’s done to the business itself is costly. Losing her to the path of revenge is another loss. King Castro comes across more of a businessman than father in this chapter. the lack of compassion leads Mona into a new combustible path. Pacing leads her and the audience into a confrontation of truth she may not be ready for. It’s a solid build that lights the match for an unescapable finale.

One thing to keep in mind, Deathmatch Wrestling is an acquired taste for fans. López-Ortiz and Moore present the style in a very accessible and pleasing way. The match between Mona and Gianni holds nothing back. It brings out the best and brutal side of the genre. With a half panel introducing the weapons, the tone switches to an ultra-violent manner with the art. It mirrors Mona’s rage as she shakes down Gianni for answers.

The emotional ride is one that readers will be locked in for. Post-match, there is a range of reactions Mona goes through. The art features them in a manner that takes the story out of the ring and back to where it all began: at home. The closing moments drift into some areas before crashing back to Earth with a final panel that screams volumes with little words. Another amazing job on the visuals.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Mona’s quest for vengeance leads her into a familiar and dangerous realm. McCormack’s writing brings out the pain through the violent backdrop. López-Ortiz, Moore and Hopkins spotlight the depths of Mona’s pain as the incredible art will make readers want to pull up a ringside seat for what happens here. This story needs to be in your collections ASAP.

Resiliency and hope carries the characters into their conflict. Once the smoke clears, Del makes a stance that sets a course for if and when we see this version of the 1950’s again.

Albuquerque and Maiolo construct some memorable moments for this finale. The reveal of the shelter’s inside proves for a solid break from the drama. The emotions of the teenagers shine after the drama of the outside world. Del and Junior’s conversation is filled with regret and healing. The initial threat makes a huge entrance with a near full page panel, fighting the survivors.

Once the story shifts to its’ closing act, the survivors make their stand with a strong full page shot. The action takes big swings to convey the danger. Del comes across as a confident leader during the closing arc. The panels reflect his growth and where he has leveled up to. This leads to a short final image that speaks volumes for the future of Del and his friends.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

The world of Del Reeves shines in the bleak post apocalypse in its thrilling conclusion. Snyder constructs heart-stopping action with heart-warming moments with hi superb writing. Albuquerque, Maiolo and Brice mix in danger and drama with the stunning artwork. It’s a magnificent finale that cannot be missed!

Mistland #2 by Felipe Castilho, Felipe Watanabe, Natalia Marques, and Deyvison Manes (stout Club Entertainment/Comixology Originals) Cover: Rafael Albuquerque

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Castilho juggles around many characters in this issue. The King casts out Thrud, Har of the Dagar, Lodar, Liv, Embla and Gymir. There is a wide range of reactions to the exile. Har and Gymir stand out as moments readers will focus on. The six now must face the brutal elements of the Mistland.

Seeing how they survive in the frozen tundra proves for a new dynamic to emerge. Har and Gymir continue to break from the rest as the characters to watch. Their banter proves to reflect the lives they have now left behind. This leads to a unique finish with much for fans to ponder in this new landscape.

Watanabe and Marques give ample time for the original exiles to say their goodbyes. The panels capture the heartbreak and frustration of their sentences. Once the six exiles are outside the mountain, the art gives a broad picture of what they’re up against.

The new environment causes more tensions to rise. The brief argument between Har and Gymir jumps out from the pages. This rolls into a striking closing image. Knowing that the group is in new territory, readers will have to make their guesses as to what lies ahead.

FINAL POINT: 8

Mystery abounds for six exiles as a new stat quo unfolds. Castilho’s writing switches themes to farewells and survival fighting. HARD STYLE JUICE #2 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, DC Hopkins, and Jasmine Amiri (Comixology Originals)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ramonita “Mona” Castro is on a mission. Her brother Rey dies in an accident inside the squared circle. Mona knows this is no accident and seeks out to find the truth.

Mona tracks down “Burly Bill”, who was last in the ring with Rey. In the interrogation, Bill becomes unresponsive. Mona becomes frustrated and touches her forehead. It is no coincidence of the place of contact.

The story flashes back to when Mona was in school. At lunch, other students are gossiping about her and her brother. They claim how wrestling is fake. They also say her brother really isn’t dead. Mona snaps the tab of her soda can and blades her forehead. She winds up covering the rude students in her blade job.

Being suspended for her actions, Mona confronts her father. “King” Castro is happy she defended her brother but advises her to be better. When Rey’s “accident” is mentioned, Mona echoes it was no accident.

The tone shifts to a more downward note as a “Past Due” notice is discovered. It is revealed after Rey’s death, KCPW is struggling to survive. An idea is thrown out to try saving it but one not without a great weight.

Readers watch as a new star appears to enter the world of professional wrestling. The story time jumps a bit but not without great cause. Mona’s quest for the truth takes another turn as a suspect emerges. The closing act features Mona taking matters into her own hands once again. This time, the final image sets the stage for a very different style of investigating. “Business has just picked up.”

HARD STYLE JUICE #2 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, DC Hopkins, and Jasmine Amiri (Comixology Originals)

HARD STYLE JUICE #2 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, DC Hopkins, and Jasmine Amiri (Comixology Originals)

McCormick never let the family aspect stray too far as the main point of the story. Mona’s new persona is given a proper origin. Knowing how fiercely she will defend her family is arguably her strongest attribute. The initial banter with her and her dad ranges from overbearing to loving. Seeing the sacrifices Mona makes will instantly make her a face in front of the readers.

The time jump is ideal for where the story needs to go next. Mona’s growth in character benefits from the move. She is shown to be tougher emotionally while retaining her anger over Rey. This leads into a great closing act. Mona’s parting words carry that same fire heading into the next chapter. Strong work.

López-Ortiz and Moore never shy away from the “realness” of the Castro family profession. The sequence of blading works on a few levels. Non wrestling fans won’t get it and arguably will be squeamish. Ones who know will appreciate the details put into the scene.

The in-ring action later is electric yet again. The imagery locks in the intensity of the in-ring work. Paired with the post-match fallout, the panels give a vivid picture of the workings of the business. Prime example is when two wrestlers are talking their match out via Full page with staged panels. This all leads to a solid ending page where the lettering of Hopkins steals the show. This will be a huge win for fans.

FINAL POINT: 8.9

Mona’s quest for justice leads into a new direction with the latest chapter of HSJ. McCormick’s writing leans directly into the family dynamic. López-Ortiz balances the insides and outs of the business with exceptional artistry. Make sure to tag yourself into this series on NCBD!

MASTERPIECE #5 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, Ian Herring , Moo Meng and Josh Reed (Dark Horse Comics)

MASTERPIECE #5 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, Ian Herring , Moo Meng and Josh Reed (Dark Horse Comics)

Bendis throws in a few new dynamics before setting the final stage. The addition of Solomon provides a personal element into Emma’s plan. Conversations reflect the unity to take down Preston. It also shows the conflicting personas involved.

The Paragon has been the ultimate wild-card in this story. Seeing his past catch up with him made for a few stand-out moments. This all leads into a strong final act. Seeing the pieces fall into place provides a strong foundation for where the closing leaves readers. Pacing allows a slow, methodical build into the parting image which is a great spot to leave before the finale commences.

Maleev, Herring and Meng welcome fans into Emma’s team meeting with a two page full splash. It’s has a sense of a “welcome new readers” to it but works to showcase the full team. The Paragon displays a few emotions throughout this issue. Seeing the reactions to his ex-wife now enemy raised the tension a few levels.

Emma also has a few panels that break up the seriousness of the situation. Her time conversing with Lawrence comes across as a possible goodbye knowing what is coming. This leads into the closing moments where the panel usage comes into play. Emma’s image repeating itself walks the readers through what she’s envisioning with the plan. This all caps off with the final page. A full page that leaves no doubt where everyone stands heading into the conclusion. It’s high level work that is well known with this series.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

Engaging, Clever and Bold. “Masterpiece” can easily be described with those words. With this latest chapter, Bendis, Maleev and the team combine sharp writing with classic imagery to stage all the players into position before charging into the finale. The series is nothing short of its’ title billing every time out.

SHE'S RUNNING ON FUMES #4 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the saga of Jody and Jeanie is slithering out of control. From a tragic accident to uncomfortable situations, Jeanie is doing everything she can to hold her family and sanity together. With last issue’s reveal, is their light at the end of the tunnel?

SHE’S RUNNING ON FUMES #4 by Dennis Hopeless, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and Heather Antos (Comixology originals) looks to answer if there’s a way or or is the family sinking deeper into despair.

Let’s break down what’s going on in the latest.

SHE’S RUNNING ON FUMES #4 by Dennis Hopeless, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and Heather Antos (Comixology originals)

Hopeless never shies away from showing the strength of Jeanie throughout this entire story. Even when things look dire, the writing shows how she’s pushing through. The grocery store scene is a prime example of the wear on Jeanie’s soul. It makes a loud statement to readers. As things fall apart, Jeanie must release her rage.

Jody continues to be a wild card within the pages. His actions are frantic and unpredictable. Even as the “business” gets brought to home, his demeanor sways often. This leads to an awkward closing. The final page screams what all readers are thinking: How much does Jeanie have left?

The art spotlights Jeanie’s frustration. From the two page splash concerning “plumbing”, a sense of emotional fatigue lingers. this carries into said Grocery store moment. The team unleash Jeanie’s anger with no restrictions. Her outburst is one readers can relate to with her situation.

The closing arc captures the moodiness of Jody. In each panel, there is a sense of uneasiness. This escalates into his brash action. Imagery of what he’s doing makes it very difficult to root for him in any circumstance. This only solidifies what we already know: Even on fumes, Jeanie is finding a way to outlast everyone.

FINAL POINT: 8

Even with fading hope, the weight of Jody’s world doesn’t break Jeanie in the latest chapter of SROF. Hopeless constructs a tumultuous landscape with Jody’s behavior. Jenkins locks in the visuals of a devious world with a broken but not defeated protagonist still standing.

Mistland #1 by Felipe Castilho, Felipe Watanabe, Natalia Marques, and Deyvison Manes (stout Club Entertainment/Comixology Originals)

Castilho juggles with many characters in this opening charge. The inhabitants of the Mistland range in many different emotions. Fighting for control establishes the power struggle. As the different groups begin to emerge, readers have to start cyphering where the motivations come from. This mirrors the themes one would see in a “Game Of Thrones” esque story. This is a big win for readers as the true intentions remain hidden for now. Judging by the final page, there will be much to dive into this new world more than the shocking conclusion.

Watanabe, Marques and Manes combine many elements to craft the world of the Mistland. With the rivaling parties, their conflicts sets the tone for the book. MASTERPIECE #4 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, Ian Herring , Moo Meng and Josh Reed (Dark Horse Comics)

Bendis paces the back and forth moments to give readers a closer look into both parties schemes. Emma has emerged as the true heir to her family’s reputation. The dynamic between her set-up for Garrison is through and leads off perfectly for the Paragon to appear. Post the encounter, the story shifts back towards Preston.

The writing reflects his brash defiance that Emma is challenging him. Even with the results of the Paragon’s involvement, Preston looks shaken but refusing to accept his loss. This plays well for the closing act and the drastic measures he takes. Each side gets ample time to shine and this only builds more excitement for what is unfolding within this tale.

Maleev, Herring and Meng give the Paragon a huge entrance into this chapter. Switching from dark Blue to tinted Yellow connects with the change of demeanor and attack. The use of Red also makes the images pop, which is another cool technique.

The page panel used for Preston’s reaction is a complex one that readers will enjoy. The facial reactions vary to Preston finally comprehending what is going on.
