ABSOLUTE BATMAN #13 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, & Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle is forever “complicated”. It should come as no surprise that those themes remain here. Snyder walks readers into a past moment of Kyle’s influence before speeding to the present. Once here, the troubled souls do what they do best. The writing brings out their flawed alter egos even in an intimate setting. This transitions into a “normal” date night which is anything but.

A run-in with the Red Hood gang takes readers into a new course. The banter with Kyle and Wayne is classic. Seeing how broken Bruce is with what happened jumps out. Even as the playful dialogue with Kyle roams, the fear in his voice is evident. This garners support from an unlikely source. Readers will be extremely excited to see who debuts here. This ultimately leads into a resurgence of confidence. The moment teeters truth and a brave face. Readers can decide which is real. As events close, there is no doubt on where this all leads. It sets the stage for a showdown where there’s no real winners coming back. Settle in for this one.

Dragotta and Martin open with a flashback moment between the long-time lovers. It is a quieter look in comparison to the chapter, but conveys their bond. Once in the present, the familiar superhero themes come into play. Catwoman makes a loud statement via half page image. This gives way to a more intimate sequence. Its’ aftermath shows how both Wayne and Kyle are finding comfort in the other, even as their issues loom.

An excellent full page image launches them into the Red Hood world. Readers watch as they are comfortable in the initial action. The art reflects their familiarity with the other as a fight happens. This gives way for a disturbing reaction from Wayne. It is clear that he is not well due to Bane’s actions. The moment is upstaged by a full page debut of a fan-favorite. Timing is perfect as the main event takes form. Seeing Batman’s “warning” is bold in delivery. It’s enough to move events to a somber close. The images reflect the desperate times at hand. They close one door for now as the pre-fight plans are staged. It sends events into the brutal showdown forth coming. There’s no way not to be excited about what’s coming.

Scenes vary from forging attacks to saying goodbye. This results in a chaotic close. There’s plenty of action to flood the pages. In its wake is the opening stages of the fight for the crown. The close teases much before dropping a major bombshell. After finishing reading this, there’s no question that readers have walked into a true event.

Fernández & Sánchez open up with Superman ready for a fight. It is a brief but effective pace setter. Even as the “game night” teases a calm, it isn’t permanent. The two page spreads of Darkseid laying waste to Earth is huge! The art shows how global his attack truly is. Laying waste to the heroes in beginning raises his threat levels. This quickly wraps up as the Quorum takes stage. In this moment, a full page brings Darksied’s rise to the forefront.

The weight of the possible solution is not an easy one to carry. Superman’s expressions scream the deadly cost at hand. Batman’s calm sense gives way to an emotional onslaught. ARCBOUND #6 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman, Frank William and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

There is much to break down with this chapter. Unlocking the secrets of the vault proves grave. Xander has always thought to be a step ahead. The writing sets him up in a new direction. Knowing how many shifting moves are in place, it should come with little surprise. Xander even knows this too. This pushes forward with an intense standoff that becomes more personal.

Readers watch as Xander implies his devilish ways. Throwing a deal on the table becomes the catalyst for action. The series ultra violent combat comes into play in this phase. It moves events into dangerous chances. One of which is made by Zon. Readers watch as something is unlocked that exposes much truth. The dialogue mirrors the utter shock of their reality. It moves the story into a very scrambled finish.

There are a few character moves that give pause. It almost becomes fatal until the final page. Once here, the story lands for now with no certain path of direction next. The audience will have to make their own theories until this story returns to shops.

Smallman and William go all in on the brutality for this chapter. Watching Xander maneuver between parties shows his deceitful nature. It is a calm moment before Warr takes over. Near full page panels shows him at his worst. The sequences set a tense feel to the event at hand. It conveys the horrible truth to all: no one will survive.

Xander’s personal attack does strike a few chords. Readers see what depths he will go to. This move enrages Kai, who starts the fight. This falls back onto the formula this series has used since issue one. There is no shortage of over the top violence. A multi paneled page shows all key players before one steals the show.

This leads to a few full pages unlocking some ugly realities of this world. The fallout is more puzzling due to character actions. This leads to the frantic closing pages. A calm final panel says goodbye for now but leaves the door open for more whenever that shall be.

The Snyders open events with a close-up of Charlie’s past. The pages carry more detail than the same style in the previous issue. This start deals with the immediate evacuation as the shroud takes hold. Readers watch as her youthful optimism takes hold. It serves a reminder of better times as the issue progresses. The moment leads the audience into its’ new location. From here, a shift in mood is clearly noticed.

The pages carry a lighter feel as the new residency is explored. Seeing the group embrace this new world leaves the door open for possibilities. Readers watch as the group meets more from this oasis. It is huge contrast to Charon’s hunt. The writing shows how determined the evil figure is for his goal. Jo’s group is just absorbing in some possible changes. It leaves the moment with some optimism and joy. This allows for a deceptive build before the ending. Once in the final phases, another curve is thrown into play. Some may think it’s a straight forward ending. With the ever-changing dynamics, “By A Thread” is anything but predictable.

Favoccia and Cogar head back to Charlie’s past for the opening pages. The fear and anxiety is on the evacuees faces. While brief, Charlie’s time on the hills gives a break in the tension at a key spot. The half panel image says goodbye to innocence as the present arrives. Once the rest of the group start awakening in their new place, uncertainty gives way. In its’ place is a happier tone, even in fleeting stages.

Panel set-up allows the exploration images to take center stage. A half page image shows a new animal confronting the group. It is an imaginative take that moves events along. The panels offer a great segway point to Charon’s efforts. Favoccia lets loose on the terror he presents. A half page shot plays out like a horror movie. It steps aside for a full page shot that delivers a powerful statement. As events go for the close, readers watch as each panel teases a possible light in the dark world. It quickly fades with the final page. The chapter closes with a strong full page cliffhanger. Readers will have much to contemplate as they wait for the next chapter to arrive.

Let’s take a closer look at where events lie now.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #12 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, & Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

If there was ever a question of Bane’s true potential as a villain, this issue answers all. Snyder unleashes the walking powerhouse in his most vicious form. Even as Bruce gets some much needed help, the aftermath of Bane takes hold. The transformation of Waylon Jones is prime example. Their opening sequence slowly peels back the pain caused. Readers see Batman at a low point that only sinks further.

Once Bruce returns to Gotham, he quickly sees more irrevocable damage. The writing holds nothing back. This is all on Bruce’s shoulders to burden. Readers see what Bane has done on a personal level. Snyder pens the uncomfortable moments with a grounded sense of sorrow. The innocence of Bruce’s friends are gone. All that’s left is dreams of another time. This pushes Alfred into the forefront. Their encounter shows some similarities to past encounters. Being in the Absolute Universe, these moments have more sting to them. It leads into another confrontation long in the making. This chapter may define what the Absolute universe is all about.

Dragotta and Martin return for art duties & hit the ground running. Their depiction of Killer Croc is scene stealing. Everything about this sequence tells the painful result of Batman’s actions. Croc’s yelling at Bruce jumps out due to Cowles’ lettering. This eases readers back into the re-emergence in Gotham. His time with Martha Wayne fills panels with emotions. It might be the only “happy” event of this chapter.

As Bruce goes to check on his friends, the mood instantly changes. Readers watch as Ozzie, Harvey & Edward’s meeting with Bane came with serious repercussions. The images show the dark side of super heroics in full force. Adding the flashback panels only amplifies the heavy toll. This pushes Batman into facing his doubts head on. The final pages start with a strong full page shot of Bats and a friend bracing for what’s coming. This results in a parting closing page that’s going to have some tough conversations. A fitting end to a tragic chapter.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

How far can Bane push Batman before he breaks? It is a more dire question that has no easy answer. Snyder constructs a disturbing & heavy issue of innocence lost. Dragotta, Martin & Cowles deliver the terrifying new reality with phenomenal art. This series continues to move boundaries on creativity & style in the Bat Mythos.

Evil has a name in the Absolute Universe. It is called BANE. The walking force of nature has always been dangerous. In this new vision of Gotham, he is even more deadly. Let’s take a closer look at where the journey has led.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #11 by Scott Snyder, Clay Mann, Ivan Plascencia, & Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

What evil lurks behind a child’s eyes? That is the question Snyder poses to the audience with this chapter. The path begins with an optimistic ambition. From birth, a boy is born into combat. With a revolution taking place, there is no time for peace. The writing creates the dark mood as the fight for freedom takes a detour. It leads into some similarities of the original origin. “Some” is the key word.

There isn’t a long wait for events to switch gears. Once on the cusp of victory, a new player enters the game. Call it a true deal with a devil. Coming from the harsh environment of prison, the oasis of Freedom is very enticing. Readers watch in shock as an action taken moves into a brutal legacy. This builds towards a violent rematch with huge consequences.

Having Alfred narrate the bout adds a grim outlook into each blow. The resolution is quite shocking. It leads into a more mind-blowing final page than expected. Snyder has never shied away from risks. This might be the most jaw-dropping one yet. You won’t see this ending coming.

Mann and Plascencia fill in for art duties this issue. The two page opening splash carries GTA vibes. It helps to build up the player later. Inside the prison walls the views are dark and bleak. Readers watch the revolution start forming. It leads to an escape on a beach. Events turn quickly that paradise doesn’t come without a price.

The close-up of Bane’s eyes tell many signs. Readers can see how rage is fueling him. The mannerisms never sway, even when someone enters the picture. A “Man in White” bears a familiar aura as he moves through panels. Having a brief flashback thrown in before the painful change adds more emotion. The true evolution of Bane appears via half panel. Cowles’ lettering raises the anxiousness of its’ fallout.

Readers watch as the main event showdown barges into view. A full page image meets a two page splash for opposing views. What follows next are panels of unapologetic violence. This fight isn’t for the faint of heart. In its’ wake is a view of uncertainty. A full page image displays a terrifying reveal. It’s matched by the shocking final page. The art locks in on the anxiousness of the fallout to see where things go. Brace for what’s en route.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

Bane’s history of pain and promise lead into a new phase of the Dark Knight. Snyder’s writing takes readers into the heart of the beast. Mann and company deliver on the disturbing new reality as Bane takes hold. It is never just a “regular” issue in this Absolute view.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #10 (DC COMICS)

Someone is ready to break the Bat again. Waylon Jones went missing. This has prompted Gotham’s violent protector on a seek and rescue mission. His journey has led him into the dark underground of ARK M. It has also brought him into the path of a dangerous foe. BANE defeated BATMAN easily. What is the current fate of the Dark Knight now?

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #10 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, & Clayton Cowles drags Bruce Wayne further into darkness!

Let’s take a deeper dive of the latest chapter.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder takes a disturbing look at the Arkham mythos with this chapter. Establishing Wayne has been gone for months creates a sense of panic. It starts a cold road to freedom as Batman becomes a test subject. The writing teases enough to give false hope. There are plenty of easter eggs to the rogues gallery throughout. In the end, it all circles back to the purest form of rage.

Bane’s demeanor is chilling. This is much in the vein of his “Knightfall” run. His motives are more calculated in slowly breaking Wayne’s mind. Even as Batman takes extreme measures, there is little hope shown. Readers watch as the Dark Knight digs deep into his memories for strength. The flashback sequences add to the drive for escaping. This spins into a striking closing sequence. As a “final” test is pushed, Snyder offers a sliver of chance. It results in a rollercoaster of reactions. None may be more chilling than the final panel. Rest assured, the Absolute vision continues to push boundaries into new territory.

Dragotta and Martin take readers into the morbid world of Ark M in the art. The initial escape wastes little time in presenting its’ horror. Bane’s presence is overshadowed by events until the last moment. Presenting him in this manner only adds to his fearful persona. Other than the flashback panels, the mood of despair is a permanent fixture for this issue. There is no better example than the “second” escape attempt.

The art hones in on the drastic measures Wayne takes to escape. This includes a close-up on his “knuckles” to using stomach acid as a corrosive weapon. The images hold nothing back. Readers watch as the terrifying landscape continues to spiral. This fuels the art in the closing act. The full page return to form kickstarts a painful journey. Readers watch as the art brings out the dire feel while pouring Bane’s aggression into the mix. All sides give way to an incredible two page splash. The image serves as a surprising rally cry to the book. As impactful as that goes, the final page steals back some thunder. It leaves readers with more doubt as potential hope may not be in the cards for Gotham’s favorite son.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

How far can a Bat be broken? That is the question posed in this latest chapter. Snyder pens a disturbing look at the true horror of Gotham. Dragotta, Martin and Cowles construct the brutal and dire world which Batman now finds himself in. The Absolute Universe has never been a hopeful world. This chapter shows there are many levels to descend before hitting absolute despair.

ARCBOUND #5 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

The long wait is finally over! It has been since March 2025 since readers have ventured into a unique sci-fi epic. Kai’s revenge mission has taken many turns. Since Xander turned on him, the lifeless soldier’s body was put into an Arc. This new stat quo has put him on a collision course with his former partner.

Along the way, Kai has picked up an unlikely ally. Barnes was hired to take the former Zynitec soldier out. Due to another Xander double cross, the foes have become united. How do they navigate the treacherous landscape now?

ARCBOUND #5 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman, Frank William and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics) brings forth another action packed chapter.

Let’s see if the latest venture is worth the wait.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The opening pages prove to be a calm before the storm. Readers see a familiar face return in a new light. Kyra, Kai’s wife, becomes a major point in his new mission. There is a heightened sense of danger looming. Their mission seems improbable on thought. Breaking into the Zynitec Great Vault is daunting. Knowing this group of four is thrown together worsens their odds. Seeing their ill-fated attempt provides many ingredients for an already combustible plot.

Kai’s plan leads into many traditional set-ups. The writing never loses the importance of the mission. It only takes a break to focus on Kyra’s repercussions. Xander’s devilish ways ooze with every line. The fallout posies a new danger while pieces are falling into place. Once events head back towards Kai’s crew, the action takes over. Readers don’t wait long till the brutality is unleashed. This leads into a very surprising close. A new reveal throws everything in flux as the story takes a dramatic turn. There’s never a dull moment with this series.

Smallman and William open with a more subtle look at Kyra. Her reactions of shock and worry take hold. This carries over to the group boarding the vault. Readers watch as they cover many different emotions before hitting the ground running. Even a quick disposal of two guards has a sense of tension. It is a much different mood than the return to Kyra’s plot.

Xander’s manipulations fall on deaf ears. The art captures his overconfidence. It’s matched by Kyra’s defiance. Even the schemer, a half page panel showcases his insurance plan. Readers watch as the tone goes into familiar territory. A discovery leads into a violent half page panel. Pacing kicks into high gear. A two page splash of violence ushers in the shocking ending. The final page leaves many questions as the near full page unveils a hidden secret. How this plays out is anyone’s guess.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

The best laid plans never go off without a hitch. The writing pushes Kai’s counter attacks into a firestorm. Smallman and company construct the high drama with some surprises along the way. The saga of Kai never ceases to hold readers’ attention as it carves its’ explosive path.

The world of Bruce Wayne has never been more different. Old enemies are now childhood friends. Martha Wayne is alive and flourishing in Gotham. These elements are just a few key changes in the Absolute Universe.

Even as those moments have been huge, they may fall in comparison to a new vision of a deadly rogue.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #9 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, & Clayton Cowles welcomes BANE into Batman’s world.

Let’s take a closer look at how events play out now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

How do you make Bane more terrifying? Remember: this is the man who broke Batman’s back AND killed Alfred! Snyder wastes little time in bringing the giant terror back to his strategic roots. In one move, he ends a peace treaty for more war. The writing brushes it off as an afterthought. How does this version of Batman stand a chance here?

The writing shows how he is handling a close friend’s disappearance. It is a brutal showcase of how Wayne barely holds his rage together. Snyder also quickly reveals a key player in the Bat-Universe. How said person will factor in will be fun to watch. It ‘s not the only new/old face appearing here. Once the mission becomes clear, there is no turning back on direction. The flashback moments solidify the hurt Wayne is feeling. This spirals into more reveals and a terrifying close. The last page is going to evoke a reaction out of readers that won’t be silenced anytime soon.

Dragotta returns after a two issue break and swings for the fences. Bane’s introduction is haunting and ultra brutal. One small panel speaks volumes onto the lengths he is willing to go. It carries a certain aura of fear. This never leaves his panels as events shift to Gotham City. Once here, readers are caught up quickly on the state of Bruce Wayne.

The violent reactions to his friends disappearance refuse to leave readers. It shows how broken he is There’s no comparison to the fragile mental state. The interactions with his friends is case in point. An angry outburst drives home Wayne’s pain. Readers see how this pushes his investigation further. A full page image unveils a hidden secret of the new Absilute world. There’s little time to process it as the closing takes hold. The art is unforgiving in the action. This is drilled home in the final page. A full page image establishes true fear as an absolute statement is made for the future of Gotham.

The Snyder family gives readers a true insight into Charlie’s character. Seeing the throwback to her youthful days, it makes the shroud even more devastating. The writing shows the family disconnect she has with her father. There’s no denying her sense of wanting a connection. Once Daya (her best friend)is removed, Charlie’s search for belonging takes hold. It cements her struggles for bonding with the group in this new environment.

The search for the safe haven provides a break from the heavier drama. Charlie’s friendship with Jo steals the page time before the evil emerges. Readers watch as Ren and Charon make a deadly re-emergence into the saga. Their cut-throat tactics send the story into a darker voyage. A vicious test offers a larger reward if successful. This throws everything into a high gear towards the close. After a frantic scene, the fallout teases the unimaginable. Readers watch as the chapter closes with many questions in the air. This segways into present time with a strong two page splash. The unlikely group crashes the scene before having their optimism stolen by Ren.

The brutal message sent to Ren’s prisoners can’t be avoided. A near half page panel leaves no doubt of the ruthlessness. This transitions into a full image split by the two evil allies. ABSOLUTE BATMAN #8 by Scott Snyder, Marcos Martín, Muntsa Vicente, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder dances in the horror aspect of this version of the Batman rogue. Fries is completely unhinged. His twisted view deviates from the normal themes. Readers watch as Batman struggles to find a way out of this trap. Where Bruce finds strength turns out to be an unlikely yet effective source.

The bond between his childhood friends continues to breathe new life into this take. Their remembrance of their fallen friend covers many emotions. It also provides the “tough love” events that Bruce Wayne needs to survive. Snyder weaves these conversations in perfect unison of Batman’s fight. Nothing feels overdone or forced. The result kickstarts a strong finish. Much like the Absolute Universe, the close is anything but cliche. It provides steady ground to pause on while teasing a tragic fate to come. Excellent storytelling per usual.

Martin and Vicente’s opening teases the terror of Fries jr. Coloring brings the mood down to a somber tone as Fries goes to work. As his torture starts, Wayne shows his pain via a striking full page image. This is followed up by a bold two page image. Seeing how his flashbacks intertwine with his dilemma will touch a nerve with readers.

It pairs with the friends remembrance well. The use of shadows constructs the tone until its’ true reveal. Readers watch as it gives way to Batman’s arrival via half page panel. Action picks up quick with the frantic setting driving the moment. Another fantastic full page image starts the closing moments of the book. It leaves readers with a sound understanding of what just transpired. The closing page unveils a surprise move as Batman’s world takes another giant loss. ABSOLUTE BATMAN #7 by Scott Snyder, Marcos Martín, Muntsa Vicente, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder flips another classic mythos into a familiar wheelhouse. Taking Mr. Freeze’s origin to an even more tragic place works on many levels. Knowing Snyder’s impeccable Horror storytelling, the new take is brilliant. It is exactly what the Absolute Universe represents. This is no “cookie cutter” portrait of the DCU. It is a much darker place in tone and direction.

This point comes across when “the Rogues” address recent events. The conversation peels back the layers of Wayne’s secret life. Readers watch as the emotions surface and boil. It reflects the pain of losing one of their own. In some ways, that has already happened. Snyder pens the unforgiving view of Batman in a much harsher tone. It results in a few flashback moments. Once in the close, there’s a great twist set in place. Readers will watch in shock as another change has happened that no even the Dark Knight is ready for.

Martín & Vicente step in for art duties. The innocent start of Fries’ tale begins with a two page credits image. Cowles lettering tips off the impending terror. The use of coloring makes the “rogues” portion pop off pages. Vicente uses many shadows to hide faces. Snyder’s dialogue drives the body languages. Marin’s pencils only give silhouettes. It leaves elements up to the readers to decide. These panels switch gears from the tension driven flashback with Fries.

A familiar name makes a timely exit in this chapter. The near half page image sends a strong message to readers. This leads into an incredible two page splash of Batman in the night sky. Readers watch as the Fries story becomes front and center. It reveals a few horror inspired elements. This is complemented by a full page image painting a frosty picture. Events ultimately push into the closing page. The art team leaves one more shocking image before ducking out. After readers see this, there will be no doubt of how broken this new landscape truly is.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

The re-introduction of a classic rogue pushes Batman into a horrific vision with this chapter. Snyder leans heavy into a frightening take with the writing. Martín & Vicente presents a cleaner, yet dark perspective on his latest drama with the art. Brace for quite the terrifying tale unfolding now.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #6 (DC COMICS)

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Bruce Wayne has adopted a persona in wake of his father’s murder. As he sets out to save Gotham City, Wayne turned down his lucrative offer of service from Black mask. The criminal responded viciously. He’s unleashed chaos for a price. One way was putting bounties on the heads of prominent figures. Deputy Mayor Martha Wayne is one of the top prizes in the sick game.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #6 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, Clayton Cowles closes up the Dark Knight’s first arc in the Absolute Universe.

Lets take a closer look at how things end up.

Note: There are some graphic images in this issue.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder wraps up the first arc with an ambitious and volatile close. Black Mask’s deadly game works to establish an uneasy backdrop. Feeding the insecurities of Gotham pushes the city to the edge. The writing doesn’t shy away from the anarchy the move makes. A train scene details the lawlessness. It gives more impact to Batman’s need to fight back. This move also brings his friends into the mix with different results.

Seeing this new “Bat Family” at work provides some strong character moments. It plays well off the flashback sequences guided by Martha Wayne. Readers watch as she shows her defiance to back down like her son. Her calming message brings out Bruce’s inner strength when needed most. The showdown with Black Mask is brutally poetic. The writing leans into Wayne’s love of being Batman. Wayne’s ego proves to pull a drastic but needed move to end the conflict. The fallout is perfect for where the story goes. Is there ever such a thing as a happy ending in Gotham or is it just calm? Readers will be locked in by the epilogue page. This is not the Batman we know and it’s bringing out the best of Snyder’s writing along the way.

Dragotta and Martin never shy away of the violent nature of the Absolute Universe. The only moments of joy comes via a splash photo of young Bruce and friends. Even as innocent as this starts, the nightmare scenario pushes the flashbacks into a poignant course. Martha’s honest care assembles as Bruce’s guide in the darkness. This serves as a great counter balance as Gotham falls apart.

From the full page crashing of Black mask’s yacht, the pace speeds up. There’s no shortage of violence in these pages. Dragotta even sneaks in an “Anchorman” homage at one point, cause “it’s How (Bruce) rolls”. Readers watch in baited breath as the savage fight begins. There is no punches pulled as both Batman and Black Mask cross lines. A full page image will haunt readers as it ends the conflict. It mirrors the tense atmosphere Martha and Jim Gordon navigate through. In the aftermath lies a strong half page image for the future. It is quickly upended by a terrifying epilogue page. The imagery here puts the proverbial cherry on the frightening future of Gotham City’s protector.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

Absolute Batman concludes its first arc on a fiery and violent fueled note. Snyder’s writing shoots Bruce Wayne into the savage close flawlessly. Dragotta and Martin push the envelope on the line of heroic and horror with their art. Forget any preconceived notions. This vision of the Dark Knight stands out on its own pedestal for good reason.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #5 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

One thing is certain for this series: Expect the Unexpected. Snyder continues to redefine the Bat-Verse mythos. In this latest chapter, Batman meets to finalize his deal. The mood never ceases to raise tension. With Alfred’s narration in swing, Batman demonstrates his boldness. The method in which he maneuvers seems all too familiar. Its’ outcome is a fresh take which spirals out of control.

A declaration leads into a massive altercation. Snyder locks readers in as Batman takes the offensive. The result proves the inexperience of a young vigilante. Black Mask is written as an unhinged psychopath pulling all strings. There are no punches pulled. Violence takes over until the final act unfolds. Once here, Wayne’s best plans prove fallible. The outcome steers the story into a dangerous direction. It plays off the counter of Batman’s goals. The results appear that finding hope in Gotham may prove too deadly to chase.

Dragotta returns after an issue hiatus. The ever-building danger is established early. Readers can see this on Alfred’s face (literally). It is a small panel but reflects so much. This is blended with the strong flashback images. There is no escaping what is coming next. A full page image of Batman ready to attack speaks volumes.

ARCBOUND #3 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kai’s journey puts him in the direct crossfire of Barnes. Before that commences, Snyder and Tieri take a look back. The writing opens up about a past mission. Kai’s dialogue holds a sense of uncertainty as he dives into action. Once he arrives at the Regulator, old memories are not the only thing to resurfaces.

Xander sends Barnes to eliminate Kai. Their confrontation mirrors their high skill level. Once that settles, the writing throws in another swerve. It forces a change of direction. Pacing moves very fast in this portion. After some great action, Kai makes a necessary call. It does feel tipped off but with the pacing, it makes sense. Readers watch as Kai’s plan starts adding some strength to carry its’ heavy weight. it’s a solid set-up issue with many moving parts at play.

Smallman shows Kai in his element. The soldier’s perspective comes across very grizzled. Panels show Kai ready to return to action. A full page image shows his new destination. It leaves quite the impression. As he starts making moves, Kai seems to switch mannerisms into business mode. It’s subtle but is quickly interrupted when Barnes makes her play.

The full page image welcomes her into the direct conflict. There are great action images that follow. Readers watch as Xander’s move throws all plans off the deck. The art takes events up quite a few levels. It never holds back on the hellish aspects of combat. After the guns stop firing, Stallman brings a calm over the storm. ABSOLUTE BATMAN #4 (DC COMICS)

To survive in Gotham City, you either break or become something more. Bruce Wayne has chosen to adapt. What has emerged is a feared destructive force for justice. The path of vengeance is vastly different than what fans are accustomed to. In this Absolute era, expect the unexpected.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #4 by Scott Snyder, Gabriel Hernández Walta (Phantom Road), Frank Martin and Clayton Cowles takes readers further into the origin of a very different Dark Knight.

Let’s have a closer look at what is happening now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder takes this chapter into two areas. The flashback sequences take readers into a simpler time with the Waynes. Dialogue is one of optimism as young Brice tries to impress his dad. Readers watch as their backstory comes to light. Focusing on the choices only makes the tragic future more impactful. This is perfectly capped off with a courtroom outburst. There is no denying the rage and pain being unleashed. What it ultimately creates is a man looking to deal with his own trauma.

This portion dives heavily into a “Year One” phase. Snyder paces events out evenly. Readers watch a try and fail timeline as Batman evolves. There are some nods to his previous origin but nothing feels replicated. The writing walks the audience through this growth. There are moments focusing on Wayne’s drive to be better. It all leads into a debut of the finished product. This leads into a surprising ending. Judging by the last page, there is more pain about to surface as the Bat continues to spread his wings.

Walta steps in for art duties on this chapter. The opening flashback pours with emotion with a young Wayne in court. The close-ups reveal the anger built by his father’s loss. Gears shift into a closer present with a Batman in action. There’s no shortage of brutality as Batman attacks. Walta’s attention to detail is big in this moment. Seeing claws and fangs appear shows the humble beginnings. The coloring keeps a grim atmosphere. This leads seeing how Bruce grows into the Bat. Readers watch as the young man takes out his pain on criminals in style.

Batman’s attack on a gun-running shipment is classic Dark Knight. Walta’s art leads the quick pace into a violent end. Martin’s use of red amplifies the conflict. It leads into more personal moments as Bruce deals with what he is becoming. Once at this stage, the Batman’s first “real” mission is gifted a strong full page image. Events come back full circle with the closing page. In a few panels, the drama sets in as a confrontation for the ages begins. Fans better be ready for what is coming next. There’s no slowing down from here.

FINAL POINT: 9.7

ARCBOUND #2 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The mystery of Kai takes on a few new looks with this latest installment. Zon’s agenda comes across enticing at first glance. The subject of Kronium is presented with a new viewpoint. In their script, the writers bring forth a challenge to the ultimate soldier. Tying in the family past makes a quick connection with the reader. It lends itself to cover up the real reasons behind the meeting of minds.

Kai is not one to trust. He has just been burned by Xander and Zynitec. Readers watch as a tense alliance is formed. It is not one of want, but need. Kai is in a new body he knows nothing about. Zon holds the cards into unlocking its’ true potential. Readers watch how this starts to unfold in the closing act. Xander continues to pull strings on his own agenda. Seeing who’s recruited now proves why Kai plays it smart to continue with Zon. It leads to a solid landing point which opens up another door on a growing saga.

Smallman and Beaudoin present Kai’s new body in a half panel. The emotion and rage speak loudly on this page. Zon’s assistant Alvarez makes a big entrance with a near full page shot. It is an easy tell to the readers how this trio is not all in on events. The flashback sequence pops off the pages. It tries connecting Zon to the audience by justifying his motives.

It is contrast to Xander’s manipulations. After his deceptive talk with Lyra, events move to a new area. Readers watch as his newest partner crashes the scene in a bold way. The art holds nothing back as she wipes out her own crew! They keep up the intensity with Kai in the closing act. The fight with the creature caps off a violent showdown. ABSOLUTE BATMAN #3 (DC COMICS)

In an absolute world, nothing is the same. Enemies have become friends. Evil has evolved. A Dark Knight has become even more darker. The new landscape of Gotham City has pushed Bruce Wayne to new extremes. Even with these changes, there still is a need for Justice and Vengeance.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #3 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles dives further into the attempt to stop the Party Animals form running rough shot.

Let’s take a deeper dive on what’s happening now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder continues to push the creative envelope with this fantastic story. The dynamic change with Alfred goes up a few notches. It appears the grizzled agent is being schooled by the younger upstart. The encounter leans into the contrast in personalities. Its’ finish is vintage Batman. Few writers can walk this line quite like Snyder can.

Once in the flashback sequence, the friendship between Bruce and Selina takes center stage. It carries a familiar sense of caring as the pair tries sorting life out. Snyder delves into finding hope for Bruce through Selina’s eyes. The take on the rogues continues to be impressive. Seeing how they mesh in this new setup hits on many levels. The closing act provides a strong finish to an ever changing tale. As a reader, you can’t help but be impressed as to what is unfolding here.

Dragotta and Martin present the volital world of Gotham at full speed. The early escape from the GCPD carries a big feel to it. Pacing never falters as it pushes through to a stunning end. Cowles’ lettering drops a big exclamation point on this series of events. It provides a good balance from the flashback panels unfolding.

The innocence of Bruce and Selina comes into focus with Martin’s coloring scheme. Readers watch as the carefree attitude of Kyle takes over. Using “Zorro” as motivation, it is almost as Kyle is pushing Bruce to be Batman. Maybe this is something more hidden in the Absolute Universe? It’s quickly diverted when the rogues/friends show up. Seeing these characters in a jovial state is a fresh concept.

The art doesn’t escape the harsh reality of this new world. Back Mask’s “sparring session” hits all the key points of an MMA fight. Dragotta also slides in subtle panels to compliment the fighting. From the tap out to the dead stare, it leaves readers in horror of what happened. The only “win” persay is it makes the ending that more impactful. With a close-up image, a big shake-up went down that leaves uncertainty in its wake.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

A deal is struck that forever changes the fate of Gotham. Snyder magnificently sets the stage with his writing. Dragotta, Martin and Cowles lower the BOOM with the action while ramping up the drama. This series is making an instant impact that simply cannot be ignored.

ARCBOUND #1 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman, Frank William and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Paired with writing heavyweights like Snyder and Tieri, Hardy couldn’t walk into a better situation for an opening chapter. Kai comes across as a soldier torn between ethics. On one hand his missions have all been for expanding Zynitec’s mission of acquiring Kronium. It’s countered by the feeling of senseless death and conflict. He is clearly given many layers for fans to fully encompass his issues.

Xander (his younger partner) is sold on a thrill of conflict. The writing reflects his lust for the battle. This theme carries through the majority of the issue. Kai’s internal struggles set off a domino effect of events. None greater than the final pages. At this stage, readers watch as the struggle for what’s right overtakes one of them. This leads to a shocking close. The status quo is ever evolving and for Kai’s future, this leads to new perspectives. It’s a solid building point with many miles to progress forward.

Smallman and William spare no expense detailing the high cost of war. The opening conflict launches readers into action with a near full page spread. Once Warr is introduced, the violence is amplified to new heights. It is not one for the squeamish. His ruthless attacks are blood soaked panels with Beaudoin’s lettering adding to the intense images.

Events calm with Kai’s thought process getting orders. The flashback sequences tease his past while dodging the ever challenges of following orders. Kyra’s interactions add to a more “human” sense in the sci-fi tale. It’s short lived as the back end of the book is nothing but the dark side of war. The art team squeezes in a few shocking moments with extra details added. It leads to a full page shocking panel to end events with. Suffice to say, the art team gave fans a knockout blow before bowing out on the debut chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

“Arcbound” brings intense action wrapped around a growing question of humanity. The team of Snyder, Tieri and Hardy delve into a solider’s conflict with fantatsic writing. Smallman, William and Beaudoin craft brutal conflicts with human emotions. It’s a great start for a long journey ahead.
