AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #16 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 16th issue of The Amazing Spider-Man from Marvel Comics!

Peter Parker is MISSING! Stepping up in his absence is Norman Osborne (playing the part of Spider-Man) & Ben Reilly (playing the part of Peter Parker)! Obviously there's more to the role than simply looking the part right? So what happens when both Norman & Ben learn some of those lessons the hard way? Let's jump into it!

The Amazing Spider-Man #16 by Joe Kelly (Writer), John Romita Jr (Penciler), Scott Hanna (Inker), Marcio Menyz (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Caramanga (Letterer) is a great story that has a familiar feel to it, but with a new twist.

The Story

Joe Kelly did a really great job with the story in the issue, and it really surprised me how much I liked it. I went into the issue with not too many expectations and I was surprised with how much I enjoyed it and how much it kept me wanting more. We get to see 3 different perspectives in this issue, and each one of them is unique and is very impactful.

The first perspective is from Norman Osborne, and how he's adapting to playing the part of Spider-Man. Sure it seems like it's all glory & glamour and saving the day while doing what's right. However as Norman learns it's not all it's cracked up to be.

The second is from Ben Reilly and how he's adjusting to playing the role of Peter Parker. For all the abilities Peter possesses, he really has a lot of issues that come up involving his family. Seeing Ben adjusting to this and struggle with trying to live up to just everything Peter stands for and wants was really interesting to read.

The third is from Aunt May, and this is the part that surprised me the most. She has a sit down discussion with a VERY surprising figure that's been a central figure in the Spider-Man mythos for decades! I won't spoil who it is, but it's incredible to see just how much he's changed and how much he cares about Peter.

It'll be interesting to see where things go from here, and just where Peter is. It's an interesting set up, and one that I expect to play out spectacularly. I'm definitely very invested in this story.

The Artwork

John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna & Marcio Menyz all do a fantastic job with the artwork. They really give it the classic feel you've come to know & love from the main Spider-Man comic over the last decade or so. I also really liked the look of Plague Rx, and just how creepy they are. It gives a sense of unknown and mystery that just really enhances the story that much more.

FINAL POINT: 8.0/10

Joe Kelly pens a great story that is sure to intrigue everyone and keep you guessing at every page. Together with spectacular artwork that feels so familiar & amazing you cannot go wrong with this issue!

X-MEN OF APOCALYPSE #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Will the real timeline please stand up? That is the question haunting the latest X-Men series. The Age of Apocalypse is over. Yet, their timeline still exists. Sinister eludes that the answers lie in the true timeline, but which one is that?

Now the X-Men of that era have crashed into the 616 trying to solve this mystery. Waiting to greet them is the most powerful mutant alive: Nate Grey … X-MAN!

X-MEN OF APOCALYPSE #1 by Jeph Loeb, Simone Di Meo, Richard Starkings, Tyler Smith continues its’ timeline trouble with an all new chapter.

Let’s take a closer look at what transpires now.

X-MEN OF APOCALYPSE #1 by Jeph Loeb, Simone Di Meo, Richard Starkings, Tyler Smith (Marvel)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Loeb takes readers back to a great deal of nostalgia with this chapter. The AoA team runs directly into Nate Grey. It is far form a happy reunion as Grey is attacked quickly. Once cooler heads prevail, there is a reunion long overdue. Forge and Grey reuniting is a genuine moment. It lets some wounds heal while exposing the mission. Anyone thinking the action would stop here is happily mistaken.

Readers get a dose of 90’s X-Men here. This next statement needs to go viral: GET DI MEO ON A WOLVERINE SERIES! His full page intro light the match on that timebomb. The brawl between bone clawed Wolverine and Sabretooth is a massive win. More of this era’s X-team makes appearances. This rills into a beautiful two page splash with the teams. Readers watch as the action ramps up. Its’ conclusion is very brief. Pacing in here really cuts this portion short. Once arriving at the end, a final panel welcomes more fan-favorites into an already expanded tale.

The chapter is very straight forward. This isn’t a bad thing by any means. In comparisons to other reviews, this one is brief due to said reason.

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

The Age of Apocalypse gets Uncanny in this launching point. Loeb takes readers back into this classic era via the writing. Di Meo does a magnificent job with art duties. This is an exciting tale that reminds you how timeless the Children of The Atom really are.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #5 (MARVEL COMICS)

Thawed from the ice and into the fire. That is the easiest way to describe this period of Steve Rogers’ life. Sent to Latveria on a mission, events do not go according to plan. A rescue mission is revealed as a government cover-up. David Colton - the new Captain America takes out his fellow Howling Commandoes once this is exposed. It becomes the tip of a more violent iceberg.

Factor in a man by the name of DOOM is ruling the country and the web gets even more complicated.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #5 by Chip Zdarsky, Valerio Schiti, Frank Martin, & Joe Caramagna takes Rogers loyalty to the limit.

Let’s take a closer look on where events play out now.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #5 by Chip Zdarsky, Valerio Schiti, Frank Martin, & Joe Caramagna (MAVREL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Zdarsky continues to find ways to break Rogers. As noble as his intents are, he becomes caught in a new crossfire. Colton’s rage takes hold. The “flashback” sequences add more to this reveal. Readers can sense the good motives have faded away. Rogers’ reaction mirrors those watching the carnage take place. It leads to a brawl that was solidly built.

Nothing is held back as Colton swings big. His misguided viewpoint clouts any reason. Pacing flows very fast as things keep escalating. The result turns dire as other factors creep in. The fallout brings out the very best of Steve Rogers. His view of the mantle never waivers. Even in the face of his “superiors”, the dialogue never lets readers escape this notion. It winds down to a perfect exit while tying into classic Marvel lore. A tricky feat but executed perfectly.

Schiti & Martin delve into the broken mission’s collapse. Rogers trying to navigate the scene leads into more trouble. A huge image of Cap riding his motorcycle into battle. It is a classic moment that leads to an unthinkable reveal. What Cap sees next, there is no way to be prepared for.

The full image of Colton killing at a military barrack is a disturbing one. Cap’s response is moves form shocked to business rather quickly. Once here, the action panels take over. There is many huge moments crammed in these pages. They end somewhat abruptly due to the ending. Never the less, key points are hit. They compliment more “flashback” points. Readers take this in as the final pages start. It is a crowd pleaser with a few cameos mixed in. This carries a more lighter feel right to the parting panel. The art team gives a solid send-off before heading back to present times.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Cap’s mission in Latveria ends on a brutal point with an explosive close. Zdarsky’s writing pushes the heavy toll of combat to a new level. Schiti & Martin it their points with strong art sequences. It is a great throwback before events come back to the present day.

Spider-Man Holiday Spectacular #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the Spider-Man Holiday Spectacular from Marvel Comics!

It's almost that wonderful time of year! That time where friends & family gather together to celebrate traditions old & new. As it turns out our favorite heroes from the Marvel comic universe are just like us! So let's jump into it!

credit: marvel comics

Spider-Man Holiday Spectacular #1 by Rainbow Rowell (Writer), Luciano Vecchio/Paco Medina/Nathan Stockman/Bob Quinn (Artists), Matt Milla (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Sabino (Letterer) is a great issue to read that will put you in that holiday mood you're so familiar with.

The Story

Things are fairly straightforward in this issue, but that doesn't take away from how much fun the issue is. The story focuses around Spider-Man and trying to find a place to be for the Holidays. You see he normally spends his time with his Aunt May, but she's going to be away this time around.

What follows is a spectacular journey that takes us to see the Fantastic Four, The Avengers & some of the X-Men with plenty of familiar faces making an appearance. I really loved how wholesome the story was, and getting to see just how loved & appreciated Spider-Man was by the other heroes.

The Artwork

The entire creative team did a fantastic job with the artwork throughout the issue. There was a lot going on in the issue in terms of the number of characters at each of the parties. The whole crew did a great job featuring each of the characters and giving them a moment to shine. It also just felt so warm and wholesome & reminded me of years past as a kid. I really loved the artwork from start to finish.

FINAL POINT: 9.0/10

This is an issue that you don't have to be caught up on any of the current Spider-Man, Avengers, X-Men comics to get into. It's a great way to kick off the holiday season & it would make a great gift for that comic book fan in your life this year.

STAR WARS: JEDI KNIGHTS #9 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 9th issue of Star Wars: Jedi Knights from Marvel Comics!

It's been a very tumultuous time for Qui-Gon Jinn in this series set before the events of The Phantom Menace. Qui-Gon has been nearly killed because of a mysterious individual named Corlis Rath, a man he swears he's never met before. But what will happen now that Qui-Gon has woken up? Let's jump into it!

credit: marvel comics

Star Wars: Jedi Knights #9 by Marc Guggenheim (Writer), Madibek Musabekov (Artist), Luis Guerrero (Color Artist) & VC's Clayton Cowles (Letterer) is a great issue that starts to peel back the mystery on just what our villains motivations are.

The Story

Marc Guggenheim continues his incredible run with another fantastic story in the series. He's doing a fantastic job at keeping up the suspense, despite the fact that we know what's going to happen to most of the main characters.

We start to get a little bit of backstory as to what's going on between Qui-Gon Jinn & Corlis Rath and it's a fascinating read. We see a mystery reminiscent of Obi-Wan Kenobi's search in Attack of the Clones. There's also a great flashback sequence back to Qui-Gon's days as a Padawan under the tutelage of Count Dooku. To me this is where the story really excels.

We didn't get to see this pairing at all on the big screen, and the only real time we've seen it is limited to a little bit on the animated side of things. So to get to see these two important figures together is fantastic. You can also really get a sense for just where Dooku is at in his journey, and where he's going to end up and it's such a fascinating read.

The Artwork

Madibek Musabekov & Luis Guerrero do a tremendous job with the artwork in this issue. They did a great job with the flashback sequences and getting to see a young Qui-Gon was a real treat I didn't expect to see. I also liked the use of colors because it really brought across the gravity of what we were seeing. This series really has some of my favorite artwork in all of Star Wars comics right now.

FINAL POINT: 10/10

Marc Guggenheim pens one of the best Star Wars stories you'll read this year, and it's one you're not going to want to miss. Together with spectacular artwork this is an issue that any fan of Star Wars needs to read ASAP!

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #9 (MARVEL COMICS)

Even when Doom wins, Doom loses. Since becoming Sorcerer Supreme in “Blood Hunt”, Doctor Doom has used his new role to take over the world. Every hero on the planet stepped up to defeat him and failed. Doom used his high-level magic powers to make the moment a fixed event in time. Nothing can change this. Nothing.

There is one problem in Doom’s victory. Valeria Richards, his beloved goddaughter was accidentally killed while trying to reason with him. Few people matter to Doom as much as Valeria. How does he respond to his own actions?

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #9 by Ryan North, R. B. Silva, David Curiel, Travis Lanham concludes the latest Marvel Comics event with a can’t miss issue.

Let’s take a closer look at where the finale plays out.

credit: marvel comics

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

North throws a massive curve into this finale. Doom accepting he caused this death doesn’t not register. Watching the lengths he goes to fix this is very telling. It reflects his self-confidence. Doom also lets a small part of himself vulnerable to his conscious. This is a rare moment but adds to his complexity.

This point shines when dealing with a larger god: The Living Tribunal. The dialogue shows Doom’s demands to fix his wrong action. It doesn’t go unnoticed this “human” side of Doom is driving the scenes. The result is a costly one. His confrontation with Reed Richards dabbles in the heavy toll taken. Both characters have many thoughts boiling over. One’s emotions take over and leave the story in a very shocking state. The epilogue opens up another dangerous path. North leaves readers with much to ponder as a new era sets on the Marvel Universe.

Silva and Curiel flashback the relationship between Doom and Valeria to open. The two page splash of the present makes matters that more impactful. Seeing Doom face off with gods makes for powerful panels. It reflects his unwavering conviction to save Valeria. This escalates with the Tribunal gets involved.

From Doom’s presence facing off to the full page shot of the deal done, everything hits here. The fallout turns more grounded as the world reacts. Readers see many sides of the argument of Doom’s actions. This leads into a confrontation with Reed Richards. The old enemies spare no expense squabbling. Their stare down leads into a full page exclamation point. It’s impact is written on the final panel. There’s no doubt this story changes course for the MCU.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Doom’s greatest victory comes with a heavy toll in this phenomenal finale. North’s writing unlocks a side of the Monarch rarely seen in the MCU. Silva and the art team construct an impactful journey in a dark soul. Whenever Doom is involved, it is no mere story. It’s an event. This series lived up to billing so don’t miss the finish.

THE ULTIMATES #18 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 18th issue of The Ultimates from Marvel Comics!

In a world set up by The Maker, the heroes of Earth 6160 are doing everything they can to subvert his every move and emerge victorious. However The Maker is set to make his return imminently! So just what can our heroes do? Let's jump into it!

credit: Marvel Comics

The Ultimates #18 by Deniz Camp (Writer), Juan Frigeri (Artist) & VC's Travis Lanham is a great issue that sets up what should be the biggest issue in the series so far incredibly!

The Story

Deniz Camp keeps this relatively quiet in this issue, but it still packs quite a punch in how impactful it is. If you've been keeping up with the series you know that the end of each issue has had a sort of countdown going on, which of course is leading to the Maker's return. Well his return is nearly upon us, but before the inevitable battle begins one must first take the great plunge to prepare.

Tony Stark spends the entire issue appealing to the entire world, trying to convince the populace to join up with their resistance movement. Of course it's a tall task to do, standing up to the Maker & his council. Remember this is a world set up by the Maker, and as such he's set up all of the powerful figures of the world to be his own cronies. So getting all the help they can won't hurt.

It's an incredibly powerful speech from Tony, and it sees results immediately. If it wasn't clear enough already, things are going to get explosive and downright destructive. Deniz Camp is penning an absolute masterpiece and I can't wait to see where it goes.

The Artwork

Juan Frigeri is on the artwork for this issue & he does one of the most incredible jobs of a lifetime with the art. He brings such a level to the artwork it almost jumps off the pages and compliments the story beautifully. His pieces with the general populace of this world are particularly incredible and really convey just the importance of what we're seeing here. I honestly think it's some of the best artwork you're going to see on comic stands this week!

FINAL POINT: 9.0/10

Deniz Camp continues his spectacular run with this issue & delivers another incredible story. It's an incredible set up for what's sure to be one of the most anticipated issues of the year. Together with some spectacular artwork you really don't want to miss this series.

DC/MARVEL: BATMAN/DEADPOOL #1 (DC COMICS/MARVEL COMICS)

Earlier this year, the “big two” of comics reunited for an unlikely team-up. “Deadpool/Batman” launched a new wave of crossover stories. This new united front sent fans into a wild frenzy. It teased the idea for more characters and impossible stories. The creative aspect has been one of many wins for Marvel and DC. They recently has a crossover involving Thor/Shazam & The Flash/Fantastic Four on their digital library platforms. This was followed with a push to sign up for the services, getting more people into comics.

Before 2025 wraps up, the publishers are reuniting for another special edition. It’s time for round two between the Dark Knight & the Merc with a Mouth!

DC/MARVEL: BATMAN/DEADPOOL #1 by Grant Morrison, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez, Todd Klein, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, Frank Cvetkovic, Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, Wes Abbott, Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner, Tamra Bonvillain, Dave Sharpe, G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson, Francesco Segala & Steve Wands deliver on another round of mash-up tales.

Let’s break down what is unfolding this go around!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Much like the first crossover, the book is jam-packed with an all-star creative lineup. This results in some show-stealing pairings. None fully steal the spotlight away from the lead pair. A great deal of this revolves around the vivid imagination of Grant Morrison.

Being no stranger to Batman, Morrison throws him into an unstable scenario. This is largely due to his dance partner. While investigating a murder under Amanda Waller, Batman stumbles into Deadpool’s path. The result takes clever shots at Wade’s “origin”. Morrison’s writing keeps its’ zip as the story moves forward. Readers watch as the zany side of their pairing sets a course for a deadly villain's grasp. Knowing Morrison’s history with said character, the mood sets into a comfortable yet dangerous tone.

This allows some breathing room as the story starts taking a different shape. There are many creative reaches attempted. Most all hit their marks. Readers that know some history will pop for a huge reveal in these moments. It spirals the story into a unique spot. The result is a fast finish to tie up loose ends. Ordinarily, this might misfire. Knowing what Morrison does best, the finish is vintage. It sends readers home on a high note until the next go around. You can’t ask for much more than that.

Mora and Sánchez start off events with a traditional look at Gotham City. the brooding tones are very evident in these pages. It ushers in the investigative portion of Batman’s case. This is the arguably last “normal” moment of the story. From here, everything moves to mirror Deadpool’s aura in the chapter.

The two page spread pays a small homage to a classic DC tale. It doesn’t take long before the 4th wall is shattered completely. Once Batman appears, the panels spotlight the clash in personalities. There is plenty of wacky Deadpool moments here. After the pace slows up, the main antagonist reveals themselves.

Readers are gifted an excellent two page spread for this intro. It opens the door for the story to explore the more head-scratching times of the Dark Knight & Marvel. A full page shot welcomes in this volatile character. Panels get extremely brutal in this fight. It helps to bring everything into the final act.

Once here, a new player enters the game. The shadowy figure will raise some eyebrows and smiles. Their persona shines on the pages. They throw the story off-axis. Readers watch another Bat-version crash the party via full page. Their appearance circles the end of the tale. Events close up with a solid near full page send-off. The bar was set high for art and hit the mark for this special issue.

The sub-stories are a LOADED line-up of creators:

Hellblazer & Dr. Strange (James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, Frank Cvetkovic) brings out the dark magic side both dabble in.

Nightwing & Wolverine (Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, Wes Abbott) re-unites the Eisner-winning team behind Dick Grayson’s best adventures for another classic.

Harley Quinn & the Hulk (Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner, Tamra Bonvillain, Dave Sharpe) is as over the top as readers would hope.

Closing up shop is Static & Ms. Marvel ( G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson, Francesco Segala & Steve Wands). The story pairs up to fan-favorites leaving the readers wanting to see more of their adventures.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5

The second go-around between Wayne and Wilson heads into weird territory for a huge win. Morrison runs wild with the writing to fans’ delight. Mora and Sánchez craft amazing images to navigate the complex tale. Add in the other superb side-sagas and this is one that’s sure to please all. Don’t miss out!

Let me know your thoughts on DC/MARVEL: BATMAN/DEADPOOL #1 in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Gargoyles x Fantastic Four #1 (DYNAMITE COMICS/MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the crossover issue of Gargoyles x Fantastic Four #1 from Dynamite Comics!

The Manhattan Clan has teamed up with Marvel's first family

Gargoyles x Fantastic Four #1 by Greg Weisman (Writer), George Kambadias (Artist) & Jeff Eckleberry (Letterer) is an action packed adventure that has twist, turns & surprises from start to finish!

The Story

Greg Weisman brings his A game for this story, and it's a blast from start to finish. The story starts with the Human Torch, The Thing, Angela & Broadway all underground taking on none other than the Mole Man and his forces!

Meanwhile you have Reed, Sue, Valeria, Franklin, Goliath, Elisa, Brooklyn, Katana, Nashville & Tachi back at the Baxter Building preparing to help the group underground by preparing an anti-kaiju serum. But of course trouble ensues.

I really liked the pairings that Greg did in this issue, and they all work so well. I also liked the choice of villains in this as well because they all made sense and were well thought out. Admittedly there was a four legged cameo appearance from the Marvel side of things I didn't expect, but worked out so incredibly well.

The story really excels when it comes to the family aspect of things, and it makes for such a fun read. Seeing the kids from both groups come together and cause some chaos was such a blast to read. I'd really enjoy seeing a mini series run with just the kids, it would be so much fun.
The Artwork

George Kambadias does a tremendous job with the art in the issue, and especially with the way he draws the characters. The backgrounds really enhance how great the panels are, plus you've got the stellar coloring in the issue as well.

FINAL POINT: If this is the end of the Fantastic Four/Gargoyles crossover (and I don't think it is), than it's been an amazing two issue run between both issues. Greg's story is just simply spectacular and the artwork is stunning as well. This is an issue you cannot miss whatsoever!

Overall Grade: 10/10

Spider-Man '94 #3 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 3rd issue of Spider-Man '94 from Marvel Comics!

Peter Parker has been fighting battles on both sides of his life, in this return to the classic cartoon show from the 1990s. He's been fighting battles against the mysterious Morlun, while having Kaine following him as well. All the meanwhile he's been dealing with his life as Peter Parker & his usual drama with his family. But what happens when we learn the past of who Morlun is? Let's jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics

Spider-Man '94 #3 by J.M. DeMatteis (Writer), Jim Towe (Artist), Jim Campbell (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Caramanga (Letterer) is a great issue  that peels back the mystery on just who exactly is the villain Morlun.

The Story

After getting his beat up pretty badly in the last issue, Peter is in Morlun's clutches with seemingly no hope for escape. This is when we start to learn the backstory of just who Morlun is, and what his end goal is. It's a fascinating backstory that feels like something right out of the cartoon show if it were still on TV today.

Meanwhile, we finally get confirmation on what was teased in the previous issue. That is that Aunt May does indeed know Peter's secret, and that she has known for sometime. It's a twist that isn't exactly new to the mythos of Spider-Man but it is a surprise here. It's a touching moment between MJ & May as they share an intimate moment discussing just how they need to be there for him.

The story involving Kaine is interesting, and should start to pay off in the next couple of issues. However for right now it's moving along a little slowly. Oh by the way, did I mention Kraven is here? So suffice it to say the next couple of issues should be VERY interesting!

The Artwork

Jim Towe & Jim Campbell bring their A game yet again with this issue. The flashback sequence for Morlun is so immaculately drawn that it flows together so seamlessly. Also I cannot praise their work on recreating Peter, Mary Jane & Aunt May so immaculately compared to the animated series. It looks exactly like the show, and it really adds to the feeling of continuing the story.

FINAL POINT: If you're a fan of the animated series, you need to be reading this series. It's so faithful to the original works that it's been such a seamless jump into the series. DeMatteis has been incredible with the story, and the artwork has been perfectly drawn. You cannot go wrong with reading this issue & series.

Overall Grade: 9.0/10

Star Wars: Han Solo - Hunt For the Falcon #3 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm reviewing the third issue of Star Wars: Han Solo - Hunt For the Falcon #3 from Marvel Comics!

Han Solo has lost the Millenium Falcon and wants it back! Call it a midlife crisis, or call it wanting to relive the glory days but Han & Chewie are on the trail trying to track down the Millenium Falcon. Set between the events of Return of the Jedi & The Force Awakens it's filling in some holes we didn't know. So let's jump into it!

Star Wars: Han Solo - Hunt For the Falcon #3 by Rodney Barnes (Writer), Ramon Rosanas (Artist), Guru-eFX (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Caramagna (Letterer) is a great issue that peels back the mystery a little bit at what happened to some of our favorite heroes.

The Story

Rodney Barnes might've written my favorite Star Wars comic in the last couple of months, and I'm not joking! The issue features a number of flashbacks that start to uncover just what exactly happened between Han & Leia, while it also shows Han in a way we haven't seen him before.

I really liked the flashback sequences with Han, Leia & Ben. They're easily the standout portions of the issue, because if you remember we haven't seen what happened between Han & Leia between The Return of the Jedi & The Force Awakens. We saw them happily celebrating the Battle of Endor, and the next thing we knew they were avoiding each other & hadn't seen each other in some time.

I really like the story Rodney is telling with Han as well. So often we see Han in a light like he hasn't lost a step, and that he's still at the top of his game. We even saw that in the last couple of adult book series in the old Legends cannon. Does he still have it? Sure, and we see that in this issue. However we also see a vulnerable Han who is contemplating a lot and trying to find out where his place is in the galaxy. It's such a fascinating read from start to finish.

The Artwork

Ramon Rosanas & Guru-eFX both do a great job in this issue with the art. I love the way Ramon drew the characters' faces, because you really get a sense of the pain & hurt they're feeling in the issue. I also loved the color Guru-eFX did because it helped give such a sense of familiarity for the issue that helped enhance the reading experience.

FINAL POINT: This is an issue that you're not going to want to miss reading, because it starts to add some depth & explanation to one of the most famous romances in cinema history. Together with spectacular artwork, this is one of the best Star Wars comics in recent history.

Overall Grade: 8.5/10

Thank you for checking out my review! Be sure to reach out to me on Twitter & let me know what you thought of the issue!

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: TORN #2 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 2nd issue of Amazing Spider-Man: Torn from Marve Comics!

Peter Parker is back in college! No he didn't get his degree revoked, but rather this is a story taking place in the early days of the mythos of Peter in the 616 universe. So just what does it all mean? Let's jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics

The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn #2 by J. Michael Straczynski (Writer), Pere Perez (Artist), Guru-eFX (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Caramanga (Letterer) isn't so much a step forward for the serie, but rather a step sideways. It's not bad, but it doesn't continue the great start that the first issue gave us.

The Story

It's a fairly straightforward issue this time round, and there aren't any huge revelations or big plot developments. Peter is on the trail of translating the Proteus Maleficarum, that's the book that was almost stolen in the first issue, but the problem is it's in German.

While he's doing that Evangeline is confronting the man who sent her on the job to steal the book in the first place and turned her into something out of an episode of Gargoyles.

It's not a bad story per se, but there isn't a whole lot going on with it. The story's been started and now the chess pieces are being set up so to speak. I don't want to call it filler, because it's only the 2nd issue, but it's close to it.

The Artwork

Pere Perez & Guru-eFX both do a great job with the art in the issue. As I said before, this series isn't set in the present day time of the 616 universe, but rather an earlier time when Peter & his friends were still in college, As such, Perez & Guru-eFX both do a great job with how Peter & his friends all look and bringing them to look like those early years.

FINAL POINT: The story isn't anything to write home about, but the artwork is definitely worth the read. The series still shows promise, but hopefully they can recover from an early misstep.

Overall Grade: 6.0/10

SPIDER-MAN: NOIR #2 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 2nd issue of Spider-Man Noir from Marvel Comics!

The scene is 1939, and Peter Parker is a private detective by day, and the masked vigilante Spider-Man by night! He's investigating the murder of none other than George Stacy, the father of Gwen Stacy! So will he crack the case? Let's jump into it!

credit: Marvel Comics

Spider-Man Noir #2 by Erik Larsen (Writer), Andrea Broccardo (Artist), Rachelle Rosenberg (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Sabino (Letterer) is a great issue that is filled with mystery & intrigue that helps it stand out from other Spider-Man comics!

The Story

Erik Larsen does an incredible job with the story throughout this issue, and he isn't afraid to push some boundaries. The story feels like a murder/mystery movie you might find on Turner Classic Movies on a Saturday afternoon and it plays out beautifully. It has some familiar beats to the story, but it does a great job at staying rooted in the 1930's.

We're introduced to the villain Hard Boil in this issue, He's a mountain of a man that's sharply dressed and means business. I will say his name is extremely spot on and it gave me a laugh reading the issue.

Peter does eventually work out just who it was that murdered George Stacy, and it isn't good. I won't spoil it here, but it's safe to say that the relationship between this universe's Peter Parker & Gwen Stacy will not be anything like what we've seen in previous incarnations.

The Artwork

Andrea Broccardo & Rachelle Rosenberg both do an AMAZING job on the artwork from start to finish on the issue. They do such a great job with the look of the characters & the backgrounds of the panels. It genuinely looks like the 1930's, and stays away from some of the recent iterations styles. It works so incredibly well and is just so much fun to look at!

FINAL POINT: Erik Larsen provides a different look at Spider-Man than what we've been used to the last couple of years. Together with stellar artwork from Andrea & Rachelle, this is an issue (and a series) that should be at the top of your lists!

Overall Grade: 10/10

STAR WARS #7 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 7th issue of the main line Star Wars comic from the folks over at Marvel!

It's a very tense point in time for the young New Republic so far. Yes, the Empire has been defeated at the Battle of Jakku but that doesn't mean it's all parties and fancy dinners! They've had to contend with several issues that threaten to push them to the brink! So just can they get through this? Let's jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics

Star Wars #7 by Alex Segura (Writer), Pete Woods (Artist) & VC's Clayton Cowles (Letterer) is a great entry into the series that adds a new wrinkle to things!

The Story

Alex Segura does a great job with the story that is tense & filled with plenty of plot twists from start to finish. From the moment our heroes touch down on the planet Kaltaris the battle is already in full swing.

The battle is great and reminded me of the battle between Luke, Leia, Lando & Chewie against the Empire on Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back which is always a great battle to emulate.

It doesn't last forever though, because diplomacy does win out in the end. It was great to see it play out in the issue because it reminded me of some of the great episodes of The Clone Wars. However there is a twist at the end, and a new wrinkle is introduced. And it's a wrinkle that's sure to throw a wrench into the New Republic's plans for peace. Just what will happen next is yet to be seen, but it's sure to be great to read.

The Artwork

Pete Woods does a great job with the artwork, as he puts his own spin on things but still maintains the look and feel you're used to with the main line Star Wars series. The way he structures the panels is fascinating because it really gives you that sense of urgency that the characters are feeling in the heat of battle.

The battle sequences are also spectacular in this scope and just how much is going on in the panel. I'm fairly certain this is the first time I'm seeing Pete Woods work, and I'm very impressed with what I see. I would absolutely love to see Pete on more Star Wars projects.

FINAL POINT: Alex Segura is telling a great story that continues to intrigue and add mystery to the Star Wars mythos. That together with stellar artwork from Pete Woods make this an issue you're not going to want to miss!

Overall Grade: 8.0/10

SPIDER-MAN & WOLVERINE #7 (MARVEL COMICS)

Spider-Man & Wolverine #7

Written By Marc Guggenheim – Art By Kaare Andrews

Colors By Brian Reber - Letters By Travis Lanham

Edited By Mark Basso - Published By Marvel Comics

***Minor Spoilers Possible***

In Another Universe

It’s a normal evening for Logan and Peter, until it’s not. The two find themselves in a Parallel Universe, 4587 to be exact. They were brought there by Reed Richards, who needed their help getting justice on the super villain team The Revengers, who are led by Arachnix who is only found in this universe. He is also a mix of Spider-Man and Wolverine, and that’s why Reed brought them here. At first Logan had no interest in helping because it’s not their universe. However, once Reed reveals that his wife was killed by Arachnix and in this universe his wife has ties to Logan, that changes his mind. So now they hunt Arachnix, but once they find him, they discover this may be harder than they think, and failure has happened before.

A Shared Love

The twists and turns in this issue keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Marc Guggenheim does an excellent job of revealing the multiple plot twists this issue has. Just when you think you know what’s going on, the script gets flipped and what you think you know gets turned upside down. Guggenheim also does a great job with the lore of the revealed villain Arachnix. The fact that he shares the strongest traits of both of our heroes makes for a hard fight for Spidey & Wolvie. The great setup and reveal leads to a tremendous cliffhanger of an ending that really has the reader fiending for the next issue.

The art in this issue is awesome and captures this world perfectly. Kaare Andrews does a fantastic job of bringing this new universe to life. Andrews also does an amazing job on the character designs, specifically Reed Richards and Arachnix. Pulling from the familiar designs, well twisting them enough to make them feel original. Brian Reber matches the art with his colors seamlessly and makes the art jump off the pages.

Final Thoughts

Spider-Man & Wolverine #7 is an insane ride that keeps the reader uneasy until all the cards are on the table. The twists make sense, well seamlessly bringing the characters from each universe together. The only thing better than the numerous twists is the cliffhanger ending leading into the next issue. This is a must get at the LCS this week, and don’t worry if you haven’t been reading this series as this is a perfect jump on point.

Overall Grade: 10/10

STAR WARS: LEGACY OF VADER #10 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 10th issue of Star Wars: Legacy of Vader from Marvel Comics!

CREDIT: MARVEL COMICS

Set between The Last Jedi & The Rise of Skywalker, Kylo Ren has been on a journey to learn more about his grandfather Darth Vader. Thus far his journey has brought him to Tatooine & Naboo, and working alongside the Resistance. So just what happens when Kylo Ren makes his way to Mustafar and Vader's Fortress? Let's jump into it!

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #10 by Charles Soule (Writer), Luke Ross (Artist), Nolan Woodard (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Caramagna (Letterer) is a tremendous addition to the series that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

The Story

As I said before, Ren's journey has taken him to Mustafar & Vader's Fortress. His journey has been going on for some time now & he's starting to have his doubts about how reliable Vanee really is. Kylo even goes so far as to say, "I weary of threatening you. Be of use to me or die."

The story really picks up when Kylo is brought to Vader's Vault, but things don't go as planned. It's fascinating to read, because we know how obsessed he is with all things Vader. I also really enjoyed how Charles is digging into Kylo's character in this issue. We really didn't get to see a whole lot of that in the film's, so to get that now is making me appreciate the films a little bit more.

The Artwork

Luke Ross & Nolan Woodard really did an amazing job with the art in this issue. They did a great job at capturing Adam Driver's likeness in a 2D format. The use of color in the issue was also fantastic and really gave it a dark and dreary look throughout the issue.

Overall Grade: 10/10

There's a lot to love in this issue for all Star Wars fans. There's some great character development with Kylo Ren, and the set up for the next issue is exciting! Charles Soule is doing his best work in this series!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #15 (MARVEL COMICS)

Friendly interstellar Spider-Man? That appears to be the new stat quo for Peter Parker. After his encounter with Hellgate, Parker was knocked light-years into space (literally). He was rescued by Dr. Xanto Starblood. Their partnership has been strained due to Starblood’s experimentation on other lifeforms.

After freeing the captured aliens, Parker sets forth on a new path home & round two with Hellgate. That is easier said than done.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #15 by Joe Kelly, Emilio Laiso, Marte Gracia, Marcio Menyz, Erick Arciniega & Joe Caramagna sees Parker caught up in some dirty deals done space cheap.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what’s happening now!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #15 by Joe Kelly, Emilio Laiso, Marte Gracia, Marcio Menyz, Erick Arciniega & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kelly puts Parker in a very uncomfortable role. Having him be the defacto leader of the ragtag group of aliens challenges him on many levels. The opening sequence reminds readers the goal is to get home. It does come with a frightening point. This transitions to one of the more surprising pairings in comics. The banter between Rocket Raccoon and Parker never misfires. It’s sharp, witty and a much needed relief from the drama.

Speaking of said drama, Spidey’s latest problems are getting out of Rocket’s debt. This results into entering a contest fitting for a certain X-villain. The result is a very straight-forward Spidey fight. Kelly does mix in a few surprises with the new Spidey suit. Readers watch as the suit reveals some deep truths. It results in a unique resolution to combat. The fallout stirs up more emotions before throwing in another curve. Where the space odyssey leads next is anyone’s true guess.

Laiso steps in for art duties this issue. The dream sequence is caped off with a terrifying full page image. This sense of worry is drowned out by an unlikely source. The dynamic between Rocket and Peter can’t be ignored. Panels present them as a dysfunctional pair. It helps to build up the oncoming problems to a nice plateau.

Readers see Spidey’s opponent in near full page glory. Their initial rounds are vintage Spidey fighting. The art goes for broke on the upkick page. Panel structure helps to push the loud combat. It does get served a break when Spidey’s new suit exposes their story. The two page splash offers readers answers to what is happening here. It results in a very fast moving fallout. Once in the epilogue, the tone is more calm. Panels still work in the emotions before leaving with more questions. It’s a steady finish for a long voyage thus far.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

The truths of Spidey’s new suit come into light with another solid space chapter. Kelly brings out classic themes while pushing Peter in new directions. Laiso and the art team present an exciting trip with their images. Readers better buckle in for where this story is heading now.

Let’s not wait any longer and dive into the story!

PLANET SHE-HULK #1 by Stephanie Phillips, Aaron Kuder, Sonia Oback, & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Leave it to the genius of Phillips to present such a clash in personalities and style. Marvel readers know the history of Sakaar & Bruce Banner. Seeing Walters being asked to govern the peace instantly sets the stage for more problems. The writing showcases the struggles to maintain calmness. It also exposes Walters into the political maneuvering needed in her role.

This leads into an obstacle fit for this situation. Readers watch as Walters must slay a beast in a wedding ceremony. This sequence is filled with action. It also plants seeds for larger drama in wait. The signature moment is the wedding reception of Korven Blackjaw. Well-timed dialogue maintains Walters’ sharp humor. It also opens up for a few surprises to be thrown in. There’s a steady dose of action to take readers into the ending. Events are left with a most peculiar close. It will have fans guessing until next issue without question.

Kuder and Oback goes big for the opening pages. The full page shot of Walters in action is fantastic. It is followed up by a two page splash of her next opponent. From here, the mood shifts to a more tense flare. The promise made is broken up timely with Walters’ notorious 4th wall breaking. It doesn’t take long to bring back the wild ways of Sakaar. This leads right into the Korven Blackjaw nuptials.

The fight with the monster is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Panels move fast giving the conflict a larger feel. This comes to a head via another two page splash. Walters eyes tell a tale while slaying the beast. Events goes from combat to cordial with the reception. A half panel image welcomes Walters into the festivities. Cordial talk is interrupted by a shocking attack. Readers watch the frantic scenes take off the page. When the smoke clears, the final page leaves a full mic drop moment to wrap events up with.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Jennifer Walters watch of Sakaar is filled with savagery and superb style in its’ debut. Phillips’ writing casts the lead into uncharted territory with an engaging hook. Kudar and Oback bring out the bold visuals fitting for such an epic. This has all the makings for an instant classic.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #14 (MARVEL COMICS)

Peter Parker is in space?! Ben Reilly is posing as Parker on Earth?! NORMAN OSBORN IS SPIDER-MAN?! What in the world is happening? Blame Hellgate. After their initial encounter, Parker was taken off the board.

Knowing the world needs a Spider-Man, Osborn has filled in the role. There is a noticeable difference between the two enemies. Let’s not forget there is a Goblin Slayer looking for Norman on top of this!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #14 by Joe Kelly, Ed McGuinness, Todd Nauck, Mark Farmer , Wade Von Grawbadger , Marcio Menyz & Joe Caramagna picks up the latest adventures of “Spider-Norman” in its’ latest chapter.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what’s happening now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kelly opens up with a deep reflection from Osborn. The dialogue shows how the mantle of Spider-Man is too much to hold. Seeing Osborn admit this is a shocking picture. The same can be said for Reilly. His conversation with Hallow’s Eve is sharp and direct. Readers can start seeing the charade slowly fading. This comes into light with Dr. Osmani-Milton.

Osborn’s interruption nearly causes everything to fall apart. Kelly sneaks in a quiet verbal jab from Reilly that strikes a chord. This leads into a solid fight with the Goblin slayer. Readers watch as Osborn gets some reluctant help in fighting the machine. The moment is surprisingly energizing to Osborn. The writing shows how even he is being seduced into the heroic side of life. This leads into a more shocking close. Osborn has always had enemies but is he ready for who’s shown up on the last page? Only time will tell.

Art duties are split for this issue between McGuiness and Nauck. Norman’s reflection shows the wear of the mantle on his face. It connects with readers on the weight he chose to lift. This was also brought to attention via Nauck’s Reilly/Hallows Eve panels. Both characters know why they chose their paths. Neither seems comfortable walking them.

This moves events into the meeting with Dr. Osmani-Milton. McGuiness sets up for some secrets to be revealed until Norman arrives. Once here, both he and Reilly have many reactions to the verbal jabs. This moves into the fight with the slayer. A two page splash kickstarts the action. This builds up to a very fast pace. It concludes with a strong look at Norman taking victory. This is much to the disdain of Reilly. His scowl jumps off the page. The closing image unveils another party interested in taking Norman down. It results in a sold landing spot for the very fast moving chapter.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The “Spider-Norman” era continues to surprise as his heroic actions meet a road block. Kelly’s writing shows how far Osborn has fallen into Parker’s shadow. McGuiness, Nauck and the art team bring out the best and worst of a Peter Parker-less world. ASM is firing on all cylinders with this latest run. Don’t miss it.

X-MEN: AGE OF REVELATION OVERTURE #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

A new age is upon the Marvel Universe. Doug Ramsey has become the heir to Apocalypse. This new stat quo led him to the doors of the X-Men. Ramsey offered to join the group. After a vote accepted him into ranks, Cyclops was psionically attacked.

As he now wakes up ten years into the future, all has changed. Welcome to the Age of Revelation!

X-MEN: AGE OF REVELATION OVERTURE #1 by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J. P. Mayer, Edgar Delgado & Clayton Cowles debuts a volatile era in X-Men history.

Let’s take a closer look at how this debut fares.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Much like previous “Age” storylines, taking risks on characters is always a gamble. MacKay teases all is not what it seems early. The picture of Ramsey’s Chorister visiting a ravaged territory is prime example. Readers watch as the scene turns deadly quickly. It is a reflection of the struggle against tyranny. How we get to this stage is unclear. The audience does get answers via a time-displaced Scott Summers.

After the events of X-Men #22, Summers’ mind has been swapped into the future. The writing walks through the pivotal moments. As the writing shifts to Ramsey, there is a very familiar feel to his character. It is easy to see how power corrupted him. This pushes for extreme measures to be taken. Much like the alternate timelines do, characters get new stat quos. One that remains the same is Ramsey’s enforcer. Readers watch as his ruthless attack leaves many bodies in his path. It leaves an definitive exclamation point on where this story is going. The closing page feels out of place as far as impact. It is solid for what it wants to say. Get ready for a dangerous fight on the horizon.

Stegman and the art team bring out the intensity of this new world. The opening sequence teases peace until a brutal death. A half page panel sets the tone for what lies ahead concerning that. This moves into Cyclops’ awakening in the future. His reactions mirror the questions arising in this land. The full page image of a destroyed United States territory explains much of this broken world.

Readers watch as Ramsey comes into focus as Revelation. His mannerism reflect the brash drive he’s trying to instill. There is a sense of “Joffrey of Game Of Thrones” to his body language. Even as more characters and action start unfolding, one stands out above the rest. Ramsey’s enforcer makes his way into the story via full page. It is all gas and no breaks from this point. There’s plenty of wild action as the bodies start piling up. One X-Man makes an extreme sacrifice to stop events.

The fallout is given a proper full page. This is followed by a strong image of more aftermath as all parties process what happened. The final page is more simple in delivery. It conveys Ramsey’s thoughts & provides a safe landing spot for concluding the opening round.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.3

The latest X-Event starts off with a very familiar theme before switching into high gear. MacKay’s writing leans into the desperate fight for survival. Stegman and the art team construct fantastic action sequences that hold little back. How this ultimately plays out is anyone’s guess.
