STORM #4 by Murewa Ayodele, Lucas Werneck, Alex Guimarâes, and Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ayodele continues to push Munroe into new heights with this series. Throwing DOOM into the mix provides unique banter. Both characters are royalty in the MCU. Their dynamic is as combustible as one may think. Doom carries a sense of arrogance as he tries discussing plans. Munroe stands her ground and delivers back. This leads to a choice with dire consequences.

The writing ties ack to the dealing of Brother Vooddo. Its’ payoff throws a monster curve into the mix. All the while, Ayodele slides in some heartbreaking moments before the close. The writing with the “flashback” moments are a big win. Nothing will prepare readers for the ending. The final pages shatter any preconceived notions. Events end with a loud exclamation point heading into next issue.

Wenrick and Guimarâes never let reader escape the regal flare on display. Storm arriving for her dinner gets a fantastic full page image. The expressions she and Doom duel with only add more tension as the night progresses. It is offset with DOOM forcing a hand to be played. The result vasty speeds up the pages.

Once the deal is broken, a shocking action is taken. The art depicts the fading life in the panel set-up. It is countered with an incredible afterlife sequence. This completes with a fitting full page image. Once here, the closing pages change everything readers know thus far. Get ready to be WOW’ed by the images here.

FINAL POINT: 9.3

The Mutant world crashes into the regal landscape with a stellar issue. Ayodele’s writing keeps raising the nobility and possibilities in Storm. UNCANNY X-MEN #8 (MARVEL COMICS)

A rescue mission has gone awry. Two X-Men teams have returned to their former manor. In its’ place stands a mutant prison. Jubilee, Calico and Beast have been captured by Dr. Correa Ellis. Rogue and Gambit’s squad have broken inside. What they find might be what does them all in. Let’s not forget waiting in the wings is one Charles Xavier.

UNCANNY X-MEN #8 by Gail Simone, Javier Garrón, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles concludes the “Raid On Greymalkin” saga

It’s time to take a closer look at this conclusion!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone throws a few new looks into this twisting tale. Scurvy comes across as a sympathetic pawn to Ellis. Handling both X teams is quite the introduction feat. Readers watch as a polarizing figure emerges to fight back. It is one that is met with mixed reactions. Xavier’s role gives balance and a few wrinkles into the fight. It covers up the true main event: Rogue vs. Cyclops.

Both X leaders have vast ideologies of how to handle events. Simone has written Rogue as the embodiment of the original dream since the beginning. That never slows down in the conclusion. Even after the conflict is “settled”, Rogue’s emotions flow with the rage and heroics of the true X leader. Its’ resolution feels more of a pause instead of an end. Readers may have differing opinions on the conclusion but one universal statement. Without question, we are in the Rogue era and that is a huge win for readers.

Garron steps in for art duties for this chapter. The book kicks into gear with an excellent two page title splash. It’s always a catching visual to see the title woven into the action. The art team gives readers another great striking image. The full page face off of Scurvy vs. Xavier starts the main event.

The tensions also boil over between Rogue and Cyclops. Emotions take over for powers as the two start letting loose. It ultimately rolls into a big two page spread of the teams poised to end events. As the story rolls into the close, panels switch gears. The mission’s outcome takes center stage. There is enough bad blood between both squads. Judging the finals panels, one round has ended but another is poised to be set off.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The X-Men’s raid comes to a grinding halt in its’ closing chapter. Simone’s writing exposes the old wounds too grave to overcome. The art juggles the team’s conflict to the stalling end. Knowing “X-Manhunt” is looming in the future, the Raid leaves readers with much to ponder until then.

Let’s take a closer look at the X-Man’s latest tale!

CABLE: LOVE & CHROME #1 by David Pepose, Mike Henderson, Arif Prianto, and Joe Sabino (MARVEL COMICS) Cover - Ian Churchill

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Within mere moments, Pepose makes it seem that he’s written Cable for years. The writing displays Summers’ gritty drive to win at all costs. It never escapes readers that Summers is there for a mission. The encounter with Cicada keeps skyrocketing the danger to a solid finish. It’s a great segway to hitting the major plot to the futuristic tale.

Salvation Bay provides an edgy background as Cable finds a unique ally. Avery deals with the same deadly virus. The dialogue lowers Cable’s guard long enough to show a different side. Seeing someone else going through his trials provides an unlikely connection. The writing slowly peels back the tough exterior. What is left is a more “normal” reaction rarely shown. This evolves into Cable inheriting Avery’s fight. It doesn’t take long for the action to ramp back up.

Once the smoke clears, the closing moments hit. Pepose sets the stage for a future uncertain for all the right reasons.

Henderson and Prianto hit readers early with the post-apocalyptic energy. The vehicle which Cable is pinned to sets the tone for the issue. It’s a creative near full image that fires off the action in style. The scene is matched by another strong full page image of Cable taking control. This pace carries through the pages of the initial conflict.

Once Avery makes her debut, the one shifts down to a more grounded level. The art reflects two soldiers easing their guard over common ground. Readers watch as Cable leaves his gruff guard to become open to another virus victim. This becomes short lived due to an attack. The new pairing (literally) jump into action via a full page shot. Cable’s reactions during the battle show a rare sight: smiling. This energy leads into the finish. The final pages show the major players put into position for a devasting conflict in the making.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The X-Men’s time-travelling titan crashes into comic shops with a thrilling debut. Pepose balances the fast paced fighting with the building drama with a phenomenal set-up. Henderson, Prianto, and Sabino bring the pain with extreme action while teasing the danger yet to come. This is one you won’t want to timeslip and miss!

X-MEN #9 (MARVEL COMICS)

Graymalkin Manor used to be home to the X-Men. It now serves as a mutant prison. Corina Ellis captured Jubilee, Calico and Beast. This has prompted the Cyclops led X-Men and Rogue’s “Louisiana X-Men” teams to raid. Both groups have not been on the same page since Krokoa. Can they pull it together long enough to free their teammates?

X-MEN #9 by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, Federico Vicentini, J. P. Mayer. Marte Gracia, Fer Sifuentes-Sujo and Clayton Cowles presents the pen-ultimate issue of the “Raid on Graymalkin” story. '

Let’s not wait any longer and dive into the action!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

MacKay keeps the teams separated long enough to deliver on big action. The opening of the book delves into Ellis’ mutant prisoners attacking both groups. Knowing the personal connection they bare, it reflects in the drama. The writing plays into a lot of “one upmanship” again as both groups vie to be the top one. Readers watch as the showdown boils down to the leaders.

Rogue and Cyclops have varying thoughts of how this mission should go. Rogue aligns more with the original dream. Cyclops sways to a more “Magneto” approach. This throws more conflict into an already built story. The result is decided by a familiar face. One name in mutantkind is extremely polarizing these days. The writing takes into count the legacy said character has left. In its result, the choice is made on how to move forward. It may not be a popular call but could be the one to save all.

Art duties are split between Stegman and Vincentini. The latter leads off the book with a strong two page action splash. Pacing moves swiftly through both teams. Everyone gets a fair share of page time before the conclusion. It wraps up with a full page image of the teams ready for their next moves.

As Stegman and Mayer take over, the story centers around the leaders. Each reaction radiates more anger. The past of Krokoa has never left either team. This mission re-opened old wounds. The art builds up the rage nicely until the closing moves. There’s another surprise on deck which debuts via two page image. It leads into a conclusion most fans were awaiting. Now the questions lead to: what happens next?

FINAL POINT: 8.9

The pen-ultimate chapter of the “Raid On Greymalkin” delivers on various levels. MacKay’s writing re-opens emotional scars never healed. The art teams pack the pages with big action and even great emotion. With one issue left, the endgame might have arrived for both teams and their futures.

SABRETOOTH: THE DEAD DON’T TALK #1 by Frank Tieri, Michael Sta. Maria, Dono Sanchez-Almara, Javi Laparra and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics) Cover: Adam Kubert

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tieri lays the groundwork for a fast rising tale of power and brutality. Walking readers through the deceptive start, Sabretooth’s tale hides in the shadows. Working for “Dr. Essex” at Ravencroft, Creed lurks. The writing shows how a failed encounter unleashes his fury. Essex’s cold banter doesn’t help his cause. Creed can’t handle failure. This stems into modern times. Being embarrassed breaks him. Readers watch as his next steps opens up new doors.

The encounter with Fyskov (Fisk) is brash and delves into giving Creed a purpose. What follows next is Vintage Sabretooth. Dead bodies and sheer violence is the trail left behind. This leads into an evil finish. Readers literally watch the birth of a evil reign in New York begin right before their eyes. Brace for impact.

Sta. Maria and the team bring this throwback tale to life. The pub beginning opens with a great segment with Wolvie just trying to have a beer. The near full page image finishes the light hearted mood. Once the events shift to Ravencroft 1909, the books starts finding its groove. The throwback fight with Wolverine keeps up its violent reputation. A full page shot encompasses the hatred between them.

In a series of panels, readers watch how Wolverine “broke” Creed. This leads into an unwelcomed encounter with Essex. The body language tells how little Creed is thought of. Fyskov sees through this and manipulates the situation. Creed leaves his “resignation” in a bloody full page. The rage continues to an underground fight. Creed leaves the reader with a parting image knowing that he has arrived with hell to pay.

FINAL POINT: 8.7

A hidden time of the X-Men’s most deadly foe comes to light. Tieri pens a ferocious look into a deadly past. The art leaves no doubt of the pure evil manifesting itself. Get ready for what is sure to be a wild ride.

STORM #3 (MARVEL COMICS)

Even at her weakest, Ororo Munroe is Marvel’s mightest mutant! She became poisoned while dealing with a power plant explosion. With the radiation killing her, Munroe searched for help. Brother Voodoo is her only chance for survival. Treatment will not be cheap. Is Storm ready to pay the price?

Storm #3 by Murewa Ayodele, Lucas Werneck, Alex Guimarães, and Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics) finds the powerful mutant back amongst some familiar faces.

Let’s take a look at the latest installment of her adventures.

Storm #3 by Murewa Ayodele, Lucas Werneck, Alex Guimarães, and Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ayodele throws a curve in healing the powerful mutant. Voodoo’s price for curing Storm is a surprising one. Loosing her powers for a week leads to a fun interaction with Voodoo. It is a more light hearted moment considering recent events. This leads Munroe to take advantage of the downtime by visiting old friends. Readers can’t help but smile as Munroe reunites with the Uncanny X-Men!

The family reunion lead to a pairing that is LONG OVERDUE to be reunited! Wolverine and Storm have had a previous Krakoa relationship that (imo) never got closure. Ayodele revisits this via a training session. Its path is abruptly ended by a surprise request. Hopefully this is rekindled later in this series. Once in the final act, readers witness another powerful figure would like to meet with Storm. It’s a showdown that will have fans buzzing about. Three issues in and Ayodele is hitting it out of the park with this series.

Wernick and Guimarães balance out the magical aspects of the opening with the X-reunion flawlessly. The credits page is an ominous one with the massive grave in full page. The mood shifts to a more heartwarming one with Rogue’s team. Seeing Rogue fly into the house only to see Storm is a great sequence. It leads to a mid panel shot of the team reunited. That is a long overdue X-moment fans will be elated about.

The training between Storm and Wolverine is presented with a unique style. Lanham’s lettering calling out the MMA moves is a great touch. It is quickly overshadowed by the romantic time between the pair. Once the final pages kick in, the art mirrors the emotional conflict Storm has. Finding and freezing love screams off the page. There’s little time for her to react. The last panel reveals who is her next conflict. It will be a tough wait till next issue.

FINAL POINT: 9.1

Within three issues, Ororo Munroe has been challenged on many fronts. In this latest issue, Ayodele tests her heart with superb writing. Wenrick, Guimarães and Lanham give readers an impressive X-reunion while setting the larger stage. This series needs to be on fans’ pull lists without question.

UNCANNY X-MEN #7 (MARVEL COMICS)

Jubilee, Calico and Beast are captured by Corina Ellis. Their former home is now a mutant prison. This doesn’t sit will with both X-Men teams. With tensions still lingering since Krakoa’s fall, there is divided loyalty. Cyclops and his group have staged a strike on Greymalkin. Rogue and her team were never going to sit by idly.

Can they work together long enough to free their friends? Readers won’t have to wait long to find out.

UNCANNY X-MEN #7 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Edgar Salazar, Matt Wilson, and Clayton Cowles continue the Raid on Greymalkin!

Let’s not wait any longer & dive into the latest chapter!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone brings the “Louisiana X-Men” into the fray with much delight. This chapter shows the contrast between squads. Rogue’s stance subsequently shuts down Cyclops. The way she presents her argument concerning teams hits very hard. It also solidifies what readers of UXM already know. THIS is THE X-Men team that is the definition of what Xavier’s dream truly is. Cyclops’ squad doesn’t carry that same type of energy. They are more of a hit squad that an actual team.

As the story progresses, both teams go into action. One surprising factor was the amount of time recapping X-Men #8. This works for new readers of Cyclops’ team. However, if you’ve read both books, it almost feels like a rewind mid-issue (with familiar images). Once events refocus back Rogue and company, events take off. The fight between teams delivers. The resolution sends the squads into an unlikely confrontation. It’s a strong landing spot taking the crossover into the next phase.

Marquez and Salazar split art duties for this chapter. The emotions pour with Rogue dressing down Cyclops’ orders. This leads to an incredible Marquez full page team shot leading them into battle. There are a few panels that do a mirroring recap of X-Men #8 moments. Once past this, the main event begins.

A mid panel shows the standoff between squads. it doesn’t take long to get things firing up. There are plenty of great action images as its’ X-Men vs. X-Men. It gets upstaged as Beast lets loose on some guards as he and the prisoners make a break. Events conclude with a final full page of what awaits both teams. The Raid is in full swing and not over by a longshot.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The X-Men face off with their counterparts in a much anticipated showdown. Simone’s writing cements Rogue and company as the premier X team. The art brings the action and defiance of both groups. Judging by the last page, there’s no easy way out if both teams want to save their captured members.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #5 (MARVEL COMICS)

Is anywhere safe? That is the question Jack Russell is asking. After two friends are violently murdered, Russell thinks he’s responsible. This is all due to the Blood Hunt event. In its wake, Russell and Elsa Bloodstone ran to the Savage Land to regroup. That plan wasn’t well received by Ka-Zar. Now the question is where does Russell go next to figure out his fate..

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #5 by Jason Loo, Sergio Dávila, Aurie Jimenez, Alex Sinclair and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics) takes the lethal lycanthrope in a direct path to an even greater danger.

Let’s take a closer look at how things play out now.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #5 by Jason Loo, Sergio Dávila, Aurie Jimenez, Alex Sinclair and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics) - Cover: Erik M. Gist

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Loo takes Russell and Bloodstone into another frantic conflict with this latest chapter. After the return form the Savage Land, there’s little time to rest. Police are now looking for Russell. Their escape leads into a confrontation that truly is incredible.

The run in with Bruce Banner is priceless. Knowing Banner’s struggles controlling a monster, there is much for the parties to converse over. Loo’s dialogue is very natural for where each are in present day. Its’ filled with awkwardness and common ground. The only downside here is it brief due to the Hood’s attack.

Readers watch as the Hulk takes hold of the situation. Knowing the power level he’s bringing, this makes sense for the brief altercation. It leads into a more shocking ending. If you know your Midnight Suns history, the close is one to please. It also drops a solid cliffhanger involving a familiar face in the world of werewolves. Another enjoyable read.

The art team keeps up a frantic pace reflecting Russell’s dash for freedom. Panels move very fast as the lead pair dodges the law. It flows into the run-in (literally) with Russell and Banner. Their body language carries a certain relatability with their issues. The diner scenes come across very smooth with the unsteady talk providing a brief calm before action.

Once at this stage, the art takes full advantage of the red band label. Readers shouldn’t expect this series to be pleasant fighting. There’s understandable violence when needed. The Hulk transformation page pops off to signal the change in direction. Events cap off with a full page image of the newest player for the Darkhold. It also throws in a subtle cameo with a much larger role to play as the series progresses.

FINAL POINT: 8.1

The latest adventure of Jack Russell provides an unlikely third wheel in his travels. Loo’s writing gives readers a mix of action and insight into two men and their monsters. Dávila and company deliver on the extreme fight for survival against the supernatural evil at hand. This series continues to bring the MCU into the supernatural chapter by chapter.

X-MEN #8 (MARVEL COMICS)

Krakoa has fallen. Standing in its ashes are mutants looking for purpose. Rogue has led a group into a new vision of Xavier’s dream. Standing in contrast is Cyclops and his squad carving their own niche. There are still old wounds from the fallen nation that still linger.

A growing threat is now affecting both teams. Can they co-exist to save the day? A better question is: do they want to?

X-MEN #8 by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J. P. Mayer, John Livesay, Marte Gracia and Clayton Cowles kicks off the RAID ON GRAYMALKIN crossover event!

Let’s not delay any long and dive right in!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

MacKay lights the match for an explosive opening chapter. The current state of Hank McCoy is a unique one. Seeing Cyclops reaction to his capture makes the emotionless X-Man “human” for a brief moment. The writing echoes his yearning to keep this version of Beast around. This leads him into acting reckless in planning strategy. It’s a new look that is refreshing to see play out.

The saga at Graymalkin puts an unlikely trio together. Calico is a new mutant that seems to be buying in to her true nature. The standoff with the guards is a standout moment. It becomes the catalyst providing a needed distraction for the X-Men. The action moves swiftly as the rescue is on. There are many moments fans will be amped about. None will be greater than the closing page. A full page issue provides a reunion that carries many scars behind the masks. Great start to the crossover.

Stegman and the team welcome readers into Beast’s capture with a haunting full page. This is countered with Cyclops’ building rage to events. The emotion being shown really stands out. It leads into a homecoming that no mutant wants to see. Graymalkin is no longer a home. The images show the insufferable state it has now become.

Calico’s stance mirrors the mutant sentiment to Corina Ellis’ prison tactics. The half page panel speaks volumes to the readers. Once the X-Men crash the party, it’s full speed ahead. The full page shot of the team dealing with the guards will have the audience buzzing. As if this wasn’t enough, just wait for the final page. A full page image clearly beams with emotion as the chapter concludes. Brace for the incoming conflict!

FINAL POINT: 9.2

The X-Men are sprung into action as their comrades are imprisoned. MacKay’s writing drives home the team bond while the stakes are high. Stegman and the art team deliver on the intense action and emotion filled ramifications of this latest adventure. Who else is ready for round 2!

UNCANNY X-MEN #6 (MARVEL COMICS)

Is there hope for young mutants? That is the question thrown at ROGUE. She has taken the reins of Xavier’s dream after the fall of Krakoa. The powerful mutant finds herself overseeing a group of wayward group known as The Outliers. Factor in a surrounding cast of lost X-Men and she has her hands full.

After dealing with the latest threat, it’s time to take the next step in the future of Mutantkind!

UNCANNY X-MEN #6 by Gail Simone, Javier Garrón, Matt Wilson, and Clayton Cowles follows the Outliers as they head into another dangerous place: SCHOOL!

Let’s take a closer look at what happens now!

UNCANNY X-MEN #6 by Gail Simone, Javier Garrón, Matt Wilson, and Clayton Cowles (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone takes the new Mutants to school for an enjoyable tale. Focusing on Calico and her acceptance of powers makes a strong impression. Knowing her tough family upbringing explains the reluctance to agree to the truth. Making Gambit the calming voice works to reflect Rogue’s influence on the team. Considering how this group was right after Krakoa, this indicates everyone is buying in to Rogue’s dream (no longer Xavier’s).

As for the rest of the book, it splits between the Outliers at school and the X-Men adjusting to their “new normal”. Simone juggles around the characters very well with giving each ample time for their stories. This leads into some unique directions. It also solidly lays the groundwork for the upcoming crossover. All the side plots wind up coming back together with the close. Knowing what lies ahead, there’s much to be excited about.

Garrón steps in for art duties (with Wilson on colors) and delivers on setting the dramatic stage. The opening pages dive into Calico’s backstory. It indicates her optimism dwindling with her mama manipulating events. This leads to her abrupt standoff with Wolverine. A full page image ushers in a shocking attack. This ultimately gets subdued by Gambit. His reactions set a tone for the hope this new group has.

Once the action starts rolling, the panels flow with a quick pace. There is a fair balance of teenage angst and guarded emotion in dealing with the Outliers. This takes readers into some very familiar scenarios. It also amplifies the Jubilee portion as the attack on mutants is wide-spread in this chapter. The closing panels cement what trouble is forthcoming and readers need to brace for impact.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The next phase of the Outlier saga lays a convincing starting point in this chapter. Simone balances the uneasy drama of humans and mutant life with string writing. Garrón, Wilson and Cowles generate memorable images as the X-Men find out life after Kraoka isn’t slowing down any time soon.

Let’s not delay and jump into the latest chapter!

STORM #2 by Murewa Ayodele, Lucas Werneck, Alex Guimaräes, and Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics). Mateus Manhanini - cover artist

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In two issues, Ayodele has connected Storm to the audience in such a distinct manner. Even when her world is crashing around her, Storm fights onward. One element that may throw some readers off is the post-Krakoa sentiments of the public.

Not everyone is accepting of mutants back on the public scene. Storm handles this like a true goddess. Through poise and grace, she raises herself above the comments below her.

The hospital sequence brings a more grounded approach to that dilemma. Storm's response is one that fits her character to a tee. Ensuring other mutants have no issues there is second nature to Storm.

The rest of the page is a race to get help. With the closing page, readers see a familiar face all too ready to help someone who always puts others first.

Wernick sends Storm directly into action with the opening pages. The pace speeds with every panel. There's a great missile dropkick followed by lightning strike sequence which will excite readers.

Her condition shoots to the lead with a strong visual of her blood on her sleeve. In the distance of a pig-headed captain and crew, the image lets readers know Storm is weakened but fighting.

The hospital moments are filled with a range of emotions. None more shocking than Storm realizing time is running out. In her journey, Storm gets a full page splash of "Oblivion Waits". This sub-plot continues to build in the background.

From here, events lead right to the closing image. Seeing who's hear to help greets readers will a full page image. It caps off a fast growing story with big ramifications for failure.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

This series has already set a high bar of how Ororo Munroe should be portrayed in comics (and beyond). Ayodele guides readers through the dire search for hope with his strong writing. Wernick, Guimaräes and Lanham construct the emotional pull through an unbreakable will with the art. This series continues to deliver on the buzz surrounding it!

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now!

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #3 by Jason Loo , Sergio Dávila, Aurie Jimenez, Alex Sinclair and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Loo has taken some bold swings with this current run. Taking a trip to the Savage Land is another case of pushing Russell into uncharted waters. The interactions with Ka-Zar provides a fresh challenge. Even Zabu can’t escape the wrath of the Werewolf.

When the story shifts to the Hood’s plans, there is a slower pace for readers to follow. It’s a more low key build, maximizing the deceit in question. Once the final pages kick in, the payoff finishes with a solid close. Both parts run equal enough to give an enjoyable read.

The art flourishes when the story hits the Savage Land. Davina’s take is filled with big panels. Seeing Russell take down a Tyranosauros Rex is a big statement for the readers. They will also have a reaction with Zabu’s involvement.

Its fallout shows off Ka-Zar’s skills. The fight is brutal and everything one would want with this standoff. In comparison, the Hood story panels stay steady in keeping the methodical pace of the story. Only when the last page hits does the image jump at readers. It’s an image showing that the story is very far from over.

FINAL POINT: 8.2

Jack Russell’s trip to the Savage Land is complicated to say the least. Loo’s writing balances the savage action and slow drama. Davina and the team lean into the brutal new landscape to create a new experience for the cursed crusader. There is never a dull moment with this series.

UNCANNY X-MEN #4 (MARVEL COMICS)

Is Wolverine Dead? Who or what is the threat that could decimate the fierce X-Man? That is now the questions Rogue and her team of mutants must decipher. Time is running out on protecting the Outliers. In this new post-Krakoa time, The X-Men must find a way to survive.

UNCANNY X-MEN #4 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles (MARVEL COMICS) brings forth a dangerous showdown.

Let’s take a closer look at how things shape up now.

UNCANNY X-MEN #4 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone makes a loud statement early with Wolverine being left for dead. The reactions of Nightcrawler and Rogue echo the readers shock to see him beaten so badly. This directly sets the X-leader on a path towards confronting Sarah. Seeing how Rogue has evolved into the primary leader of the X-teams has been such a strength of this book. Cyclops should take notes.

The confrontation between Rogue and Sarah is one that doesn’t hold back. Sarah’s back story (including the Xavier interlude) is fueled by pain and loss. This is countered by Rogue showing another strength she has: compassion. It drives her to try appeasing the challenge but with little success. In the background, the Outliers story progresses as a nice break in-between Rogue’s fight. This spirals into the close where the team braces for a stand they have no business surviving. Since the jump, this has been THE X-book everyone has talked about for a reason. This issue solidifies that winning streak with another excellent chapter.

Marquez and Wilson hit readers with a powerful full page image that they won’t forget anytime soon. A bloodied and broken Wolverine ushers in the main portion of the book. Rogue’s worry and Nightcrawler’s calm demeanors add more layers to what unfolds next.

Rogue’s confrontation with Sarah is a fantastic throwdown. The action panels move with a solid pace. Even when Sarah’s back story drops in, it takes nothing away from the viciousness of the fight. Cowles’ lettering puts a huge exclamation point on the showdown. From here, the art shifts to the X-Men’s stand-off. The outliers panels rally the readers for what is coming. Factor in an incredible full page parting shot to send this book home and the art team drops another great issue onto fans.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

Rogue’s showdown with Sarah Gaunt goes off with much excitement and drama in another must-read issue. Simone’s writing sets events off with no hesitation. Marquez, Wilson and Cowles present the dangerous battle with some incredible pages. You want a great comic to read each month? This series had better be in your pull list.

Storm #1 by Murewa Ayodele, Lucas Werneck, Alex Guimarães, Fir Sifuentes-Sujo and Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ayodele sets up many bold dynamics involving the legendary X-Man's new status. Within the first few pages, the writing sets the tone worthy of the Mightest Mutant's attention. Storm is portrayed with a certain stoic demeanor. The Oklahoma City incident carries a huge level of danger and challenges that would break an average hero. This is fitting for a character of her level. Once she arrives on the scene, the story moves into a display of her power and compassion.

A nuclear disaster provides an insight on what makes Storm such a fantastic character. The writing shows the caring she has for all people. Readers watch as she balances Orchis supporters and an unstable mutant with grace and care that only a goddess can provide. This leads into a startling discovery and fallout.

As Storm addresses the masses over events, things are not what they seem. Ayodele throws in some curves before heading into the final page. At this moment, forget any preconceived notions. The new path Storm walks is one that hasn't been done before and leaves many questions. It's a strong start from the ashes of Krokoa's legacy that makes an immediate impact on the audience.

Werneck and the art team flourish in bringing Storm into a new beginning. In the opening sequence, the full page image of Storm "looking at her past" connects with new readers about her legacy. This rolls into a tremendous full page image of the Goddess in full uniform. The two page splash of the Storm Sanctuary conveys a sense of calm before Storm addresses the masses.

The chaotic backdrop of Oklahoma City moves with a eerie weight. This gets broken up by a two page spread of Storm helping residents affected. It is equally matched by the full page image of the cause of the problem. Once in its' resolution, Werneck and company bring events back to the present with mixed emotions from her audience.

The reactions range from shock to anger, which Storm strongly keeps her composure through. That said, the closing page puts another huge moment in play. The closing panel eludes to a larger future pending how she survives her present. The art team never lets the readers escape from the notion of her nickname. She is the mightiest Mutant for a reason.

FINAL POINT: 10

It is a difficult task reinventing the near unstoppable hero. Ayodele's writing challenges Storm on many fronts while planting the foundation for a greater future. Werneck and the art team mix in solid action moments with the strong presence that only a goddess can carry with the art.

For anyone thinking they know Storm have never seen her challenged in this manner. It's a superb start to a new chapter in a legendary character's history. You won't want to miss this.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #2 by Jason Loo , Sergio Fernández Dávila , Jay Leisten, Aurie Jimenez and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Loo brings in a character synonymous with Russell for this chapter: Moon Knight. The build towards his involvement delves into Russell’s mistrust and Bloodstone’s blind faith. Elsa’s refusal to quit on Russell gives flashes of hope amongst the chaotic scenario they find themselves in. Once that is cemented, the guest star makes his grand entrance.

Readers become locked in as the world of Khonshu gives some clarity. It comes at a peak moment. The plans of The Hood swing into an ancient evil. Loo’s writing sets a unique set-in to acquire it. This leads to a solid mid act filled with action. The story takes full advantage of the Red Band label. It is not one for the squeamish by any means. The epilogue lays a surprising twist onto readers before departing. It is playing the long game on the challenge and that’s nothing but a win for readers.

Dávila, Leisten, and Jimenez bring Russell’s guilt to life with a haunting panel. Seeing the dead ghosts of his “victims” leaves quite the impression. Prior to this, the panels reflect the emotional toll on both Russell and Moonstone. With their history, it adds to the drastic call for help.

The Moon Knight pages steal the show. A near full image ushers Khonshu into the spotlight. This is complimented by a full page shot of Russell vs. Deathwatch and his minions. From here, the pages show no mercy as the chaos breaks loose. It concludes with a more subdued full page image that questions who won this round other than readers.

FINAL POINT: 8.2

With The Hood making the first move, Jack Russell gets some familiar back-up for his latest chapter. Loo crafts a fast paced journey with a haunting feel. Dávila and the team let loose with the fighting for a highly enjoyable tale. Brace for impact cause things are only going to get wilder from here.

PHOENIX #3 (MARVEL COMICS)

In space, Jean Grey fights. Her journey has now crossed paths with her notorious father-in-law, Corsair. Their path has brought them front and center with The Black Order.

Thanos' group of minions have been connected to a series of disappearances. That doesn't sit well with the new protector of the stars. Did I forget to mention the undead Asgardians now involved?

PHOENIX #3 by Stephanie PhillipsAlessandro Miracolo, David Curiel and Cory Petit (MARVEL COMICS) heads back into battle with its' latest chapter.

PHOENIX #3 by Stephanie PhillipsAlessandro Miracolo, David Curiel and Cory Petit (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Phillips is setting up two stages for this opening arc. Jean and Corsair's takes the center stage. However, Adani's steals some key moments. Her opening sequence with Perrikus shows the young upstart thrown into an unknown scenario.

Confronting (literally) ghosts from her past makes her journey more conflicted. The end result leaves a new challenge awaiting Jean Grey after her current dilemna.

Whenever Corsair is lurking, it is always with a sense of distrust. The writing shows Jean's hesitation to take his words at face value. It leads to more reveals as she presses the issue of the true reason for their conflict. Jean's play to dig further into reason shows off her resourcefulness.

Her play works as the insight leads to a strong resolution. It also delivers a fan-cheering moment as she leaves the Black Order with some pieces of advice. The aftermath sets a great stage for parting ways for now. Rest assured, the saga of Jean Grey in space is very far form over. '

The art depicts Adani's path as one of danger and mystery. With ghosts of her past reappearing, the audience can sense there is no easy way out. This leads to a noteworthy half page panel showcasing her possible destiny at hand. It helps to guide readers into the closing pages as an endgame is slowly revealed.

In the meantime, Jean and Corsair's adventure is filled with great action. The opening salvo features Jean bursting into action. Readers watch as she pries into the mind of an Asgardian and becomes aware of a hidden truth. This sets Grey on a collision course with the Order.

The confrontation concludes with an epic near full page and a warning to boot. Its' fallout concludes events with a more subtle tone. The panels lay the groundwork for something else. There is much for fans to enjoy of this series.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The standoff with the Black Order provides a steady landing as the legend of the Phoenix grows with another great chapter. Phillips constructs a rising action saga with her writing. The art delivers on key moments setting the stage for a greater challenge. This series shows no signs of slowing down.

UNCANNY X-MEN #3 (MARVEL COMICS - 2024)

From Krakoa’s ashes, a new leader of the X-Men has emerged. Rogue has taken Xavier’s dream over. The vision is simple. The threats remain the same. How can she handle the Outliers and their mysterious hunter?

UNCANNY X-MEN #3 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles (MARVEL COMICS) continues its' first arc with another big chapter.

Let’s take a closer look at how this plays out!

UNCANNY X-MEN #3 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Without question, the new direction of Rogue refuses to let readers escape its' welcomed grasp. Being the new "headmaster" provides many challenges for Anna Marie. The biggest obstacle isn't necessarily her new students. It's convincing Wolverine to buy back into a dream he clearly wants nothing to do it.

This leads to Rogue showcasing why she is the leader of this team. Demonstrating the patience to allow him to find himself gives the biggest co-sign possible. Wolverine acknowledging that she doesn't need him cause she has this under control elevates this even further.

The training session for the Outliers provides a break in the drama. It also allows readers to get some insight on these mysterious characters. The mood shifts gears in the closing act. Seeing Wolverine confront "Sarah" provides many fireworks to start flying. Simone paces the fight out to let the new danger make a huge impression with their attack. It leads to a solid final page which leaves on a startling thought. Another fantastic read!

Marquez and Wilson start off the art with a haunting statis for one Charles Xavier. The shadows and narration drive the fear as the new threat begins. Wolverine's depiction of the new recruits is crafted with a unique panel set-up. The four way "X" look hits readers and foreshadows a possible future? It's still too early to say there but the image is a striking one.

With all the fantastic art, one series of pages will be the talk of the fans. Wolverine's brutal fight with Sarah carries a bold statement behind it. The art doesn't shy away from the brutality. Marquez's art relishes in the chaos of combat.

In dealing with any new character, first impressions are important to establish. Seeing how Wolverine is handled only enhances a building set-up. The quiet panel of Rogue's reaction to the fight ends events on a tense moment which is sure to lock in readers for the next round.

FINAL POINT: 9.2

The new incarnation of Marvel's premier mutant team revs up the action and drama for another monster read. Simone's take on Rogue and her newfound mission continues to make for must-read stories. Marquez and the art team add in amazing imagery to perfectly complement an opening arc for the ages! Believe the hype surrounding this series. X marks the spot for a reason!

X-MEN #4 (MARVEL COMICS)

From the ashes of Krokoa, the X-Men rise again. Cyclops leads a team from Alaska bracing for a public that distrusts them. They also face a familiar foe who’s all but ready to step into the spotlight: Trevor Fitzroy and the Upstarts!

X-MEN #4 by Jed MacKay, Netho Diaz, Sean Parsons, Marte Gracia AND Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics) spotlights this heavyweight throwdown!

Let’s take a closer look at this new era of X!

X-MEN #4 by Jed MacKay, Netho Diaz, Sean Parsons, Marte Gracia AND Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

MacKay throws a complex scenario at readers for this issue. Fitzroy leading his team of “social media killers” after a new mutant comes off disturbing and troubling. The Upstarts are playing off the fears of the public by trying to justify their killings. Cyclops answers the call but there is still lingering friction on the team. In this new post Krakoa landscape, the X-Men still feel like they’re trying to find their way. The banter between Beast and Cyclops is prime example.

That said, the breakout character here is Magik. MacKay puts her in the spotlight as mission leader. Seeing the plan executed to perfection will give readers much to cheer about. The ending half comes off with a few more surprises. With defeat, The Upstarts spin it much to the social media angle they play. Seeing the mastermind behind Fitzroy is a great reveal of X-Past. Once at the conclusion, the story becomes full circle. It all too fitting as Magik’s resolution becomes all too clear.

Diaz steps in for art duties with Parsons and Garcia along for the ride. Fitzroy’s stream comes off as psychotic as it needs to be. The reactions from Cyclops and Beast usher in the building tension surfacing as of late. It works to cast the spotlight on Magik as she runs into action.

The team gets a near full page panel jumping into action. It carries many traditional superhero themes that is always a plus. Juggernaut’s panels of action feel bold to match the intense dialogue he is saying. Events conclude with a full page image of the surprise villain. It rolls into a more quiet moment as Magik reflects on what happens and what is coming for her as being a fighter for Mutantkind.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

Magik takes the reigns of the team in a highly contested faceoff with Fiztroy. MacKay’s writing gives a close look to the twisted social temp of mutants and humans with the writing. Diaz jumps in bring electric art to a battle that is far from over. This feels like the start of something bigger for both the X-Men and humans as the events rage onward.

UNCANNY X-MEN #2 (MARVEL COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, the latest adventures of Marvel’s most Uncanny mutants continues onward! Rogue, Gambit and Wolverine are picking up the pieces after the Fall of Krakoa. In their travels, the trio has encountered challenges. They have also had an encounter with a dying mutant which left an impression on where the dream of Xavier goes now.

After last issue’s conclusion, there are more mysteries about to unfold. Are the trio ready for what approaches them now?

UNCANNY X-MEN #2 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles dives head first into the next phase of the Children of the Atom!

Let’s take a closer look at what unfolds now!

UNCANNY X-MEN #2 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone juggles the core theme of the X-men while establishing some new challenges. The mix of the Outliers presents a familiar sense of helping those in need. The big difference maker here (and breakout character of the series) is Rogue. Simone’s writing shows off her leadership skills and claim to Xavier’s dream. Rogue’s reaction to a conversation with Cyclops is prime example of why she is perfect in this new role.

The Outliers show potential as to where they fit into the new Mutant landscape. Their “conflict” with the X-Men plays out naturally. With the latest addition to the X-Men making the save, Simone is stacking the deck with a great line-up. Readers will be very locked in for their eventual showdown with Corina Ellis. Ellis has made waves in the shadows and builds into a great swerve for the closing page. This series is really hitting all the marks.

Marquez and Wilson start the issue off with a forgotten time with Charles Xavier. The innocent period piece pays off later in the book, but creates a sense of curiosity to the overall picture. The Outliers display their powers in some excellent action sequences, but are upstaged by a debut.

A familiar face has returned to the team. The art team welcomes her into the picture with a striking full page image. Wilson’s coloring skills make this pop right off the page. Had it not be for the final image, it would have stolen the show. That honor goes to a reveal that is sure to challenge Rogue and company. Overall, the art gives much emotion along with the action. It’s a perfect balance that doesn’t miss.

FINAL POINT: 9.2

A very familiar theme runs through the next chapter of the Uncanny era. With Simone’s incredible writing, the story brings out the best of each character dealing with the Outliers. Marquez, Wilson and Cowles construct an emotionally filled standoff building towards an even greater danger lurking. There is no fear of a sophomore slump with this issue. It’s filled with great storytelling that readers won’t want to put down.

EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the world of the X-Men continues to expand from the ashes of the Krakoan Era. Life as they knew it is changed forever. Now back in a world that fears and hates Mutants more than ever, some are not ready to get back into the heroic spotlight. One in particular is ready to blend back into normalcy. Unfortunately for Kate Pryde, that is easier said than done.

Exceptional X-Men #1 by Eve L. Ewing, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard and Joe Sabino follows along Kate’s new life post Krakoa and the one person trying to bring her back into the X-Life.

Let’s take a closer look at this brand new series!

Exceptional X-Men #1 by Eve L. Ewing, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ewing gives readers an exciting and challenging read with this debut issue. Kate Pryde is a vastly changed person from her time on Krokoa. The actions there have taken a big toll on her. With the writing, Pryde tries finding some semblance of peace in human interaction. This becomes very short lived as her encounter with a young mutant kickstarts the old emotions that she’s trying so hard to suppress.

The ordeal with Trista (Bronze) plays out to a fun adventure. It feels like a throwback at times. Seeing Pryde jump in to help connects with readers that the “Old Kitty” is alive and well. Its’ fallout leads to a start of a much needed friendship for both. Some readers might see it as the passing of a torch to a certain degree. Ewing’s epilogue sets the seeds for something greater to play out. The chapter leaves with another familiar face back in the mix.

Carnero and Woodard capture the struggle for Kate to leave Krokoa behind. The wear on her face during interactions tells the underlying story. This builds into a night out for Kate and a bit of 4th wall breaking.

This rolls into a great one page splash showcasing Bronze transforming with her powers. Readers tag along as the panels flow swiftly through a concert. The two page splash features the unlikely “battlefield” Kitty and Bronze walk into. Readers watch as the unlikely duo connect as both need someone to help find their way in the new stat quo. The multi panel conversation cements that foundation.

How that will play out is up in the air due to another character’s introduction. It’s fitting for Emma Frost as Kate’s attempt to leave the past behind becoming increasingly short lived. Readers depart with a solid closing image leaving the door open for the creative team to run with. There’s a lot to enjoy with this new series.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Kate Pyrde’s past haunts her present in a solid addition to the ever-growing X line. Ewing’s writing builds on her search for a new “normal” while jumping back into what she does best: help others and kick ass. The art from Carnero, Woodard and Sabino set the stage for the next generation of X-Men to take off. The title fits the story: It was Exceptional.
