REDCOAT #3 by Geoff Johns, Bryan Hitch, Brad Anderson, Andrew Currie, and Rob Leigh (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

At first glance, how can a book work with Benedict Arnold, a young Albert Einstein and “an immortal tool”? That’s what makes Redcoat stand out from everything else on NCBD! Johns, Hitch and the team constructs a world of humor and fantasy like no other here. The banter with Arnold informing the pair of Pure’s problem is fun and insightful about the bigger forces at play.

This leads into the action with Pure’s past literally catching up with him. Pacing ramp up for the conflict. Readers will be locked in as Einstein and Pure race against the clock to stop Pure’s fate. This leads into a few curve balls added into the mix. Fallout from the chase of Pure’s attackers spiral events towards an interesting finish. Once the last page is read, there is no possible way readers are not immediately counting down the days till the next issue release.

The art shines as always with this latest chapter. A fantastic two-page spread ushers in the dilemma at hand. The reactions of Arnold and Einstein are priceless as their brooding conflict advances. Speaking of two page spreads, readers’ jaws will drop seeing the detail Hitch puts in on the “secret entrance”.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

BATMAN AND ROBIN #10 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Simone Di Meo, Rex Lokus, Giovanna Niro and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

More importantly, some other avenues of adventure are left open. None will be more important than the final page reveal. A dark moment in the Wayne family is about to be revisited. Get Ready!

Williamson presents a steady finale to the current arc. Since it's beginning, the series has been anchored by the rebuilding family bond. With this chapter, the pair make great strides forward. Seeing the dialogue with Robin calling the shots was a strong point of change.

The conclusion of conflict was also another highlight. The writing kept things progressing with ease as the pair took the upper hand. It's fallout circles back to their struggles of rebuilding. The moment is poignant as to letting much needed healing starts (however short lived). It's another factor of why this series stands out from the other Bat books.

Art duties are split again which both teams leaving memorable images. De Meo and Niro kicks the story into gear with a gorgeous two page splash. Man-Bat’s depiction here carries a distinct horror feel. This leads into another two page spread that kicks off the final stand in style.

The family gets a quiet moment to regroup after everything via Čižmešija and Locus. Readers see the slow repair of the family’s broken bond via the emotions. It is a fleeting moment due to the set-up for the close, but hits its’ mark. The full page shot to conclude the issue with will most certainly have fans talking after witnessing it.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

With not a moment to spare, Gotham’s most famous father and son aim to end Man-Bat’s schemes once and for all. Williamson stacks the deck with a balance of family drama and fast paced action. HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #23 BY Tate Brombal, Antonio Fuso, Miquel Muerto and AndWorld Design (Series Development: James Tynion IV and Designs and Development: Werther Dell’Edera) - BOOM! Studios

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Brombal shows how this conflict is breaking down both sides. Jace is trying to fight his battle but shows his emotions are leaking his weakness. With each wund that has been done, it’s fueling Jace on his mission. The question becomes: will it be enough to win?

On he other hand, being embarrassed by a lowly hunter doesn’t go over well with each house. The alliance seems to start showing its’ fractures after the defeat. The Old Dragon steals the spotlight to show his plans to eliminate Jace are the only options now. This causes big tensions with the opposing house. The writing shows how much more is layered beneath the surface. Even in the final moments, there are secrets to be unlocked. This is all much to fans’ benefits.

Fuso and Muerto lean into Jace’s rage in the opening pages. His talk with Maven leaves no doubt of how personal this all has become. It’s capped off with a strong near full page visualizing why he is fighting this fight.

The breakdown between the Houses also jumps out at readers. The embarrassment of Jace winning drives the Dragon into full panic. His facial reactions speak of the last shot to reclaim his reputation. The fallout demonstrates the power play each parties are attempting on the other. Once the closing pages start, readers will have the inclination that the end is coming faster than expected.

FINAL POINT: 8.1

Jace’s last stand builds towards an unimaginable showdown with the latest chapter. Brombal keeps the paranoia and rage high with the writing. Fuso, Muerto and the team magnify the breaking of spirits amongst the key players as Jace’s time ticks closer away.

The Principles of Necromancy #2 (MAGMA COMIX)

Hey everyone! This is Matt from Hops Geek News and I’ve got a new comic book review for you to check out:

The Principles of Necromancy #2 by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (Writers,) Eamon Winkle (Art,) Jay Fotos (Colors,) and Shawn Lee (Letters.) Cover by Eamon Winkle.

The Principles of Necromancy #2 by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (Writers,) Eamon Winkle (Art,) Jay Fotos (Colors,) and Shawn Lee (Letters.) Cover by Eamon Winkle. - Magma Comix

Eloise is a girl thirsty to learn as her mother lie dying from a mysterious tumor deep within her. Until Doctor Jakob Eyes appears on a house call to mysteriously cure her of all diseases. Eager to learn from the man himself, Eloise follows the haunting doctor to his house. Does Doctor Eyes take apprentices, and is Eloise prepared to view the grotesque lessons that await?

The Art:

Have you ever witnessed something so intriguing yet so vomit-inducing that you are unsure if you are to look away or watch in awe? That is the best way to sum up the pages within the confines of this glorious book of horrors. So many pages leave us looking at every inch of the panels, taking in the brains, skulls, and viles that all present themselves to us and Doctor Eyes. Eamon and Jay have done such a wonderful job creating Jakob, from the mask that he wears to the hollow, dark, void-of-life eyes with which he stares at Eloise.

The panels have a dull and grey back drop yet the characters and everything in the foreground burst with color which speaks to just how fascinating this story really is. The panel looking into the house from above as though it was taken from The Sims is perhaps one of the best in the issue. I cannot get enough.

The Principles of Necromancy #2 by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (Writers,) Eamon Winkle (Art,) Jay Fotos (Colors,) and Shawn Lee (Letters.) Cover by Eamon Winkle. - Magma Comix

The Writing:

The Hivemind continues to weave a mysterious tale. In this issue, Jakob gets some personality and showcases his sharp wit and zero tolerance for foolery. Eloise is one of the readers who have become enthralled by this book as we, too, want to know how he does it. Meanwhile, Shawn Lee stands out in the tone of the lettering. You feel the softness of Eloise and Jakob's voice and the thundering roar when needed.

Overall:

This comic continues to solidify Magma Comix as a serious player in the world of comics. It's a slow-burning, horrifying mystery that plays to all of our senses. When you finish the issue, we are left begging for the next, as we need it immediately.

10/10.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #9 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the life and times of the Wayne family these days can be easily described as “complicated.” Man-Bat is running around wrecking havoc. A mysterious figure has emerged known as Shush. Flatline has crashed back into Damian’s life. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #9 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Simone Di Meo, Rex Lokus, Giovanna Niro and Steve Wands dives further into mystery as the search for clues becomes even greater.

Let's not delay and jump into the latest chapter.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #9 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Simone Di Meo, Rex Lokus, Giovanna Niro and Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The chapter begins with Batman being held prisoner in a uniquely familiar set-up. It’s a Bat cave, but not his cave. Dr. Kirk Langstrom is the landlord here. Man-Bat is taking his victory lap as Batman assesses the changes since Langstrom’s heroic times.

Meanwhile, Damian and Flatline have entered into a dangerous location: High School. Damian fully believes that Principal Stone is his old trainer from the League of Assassins. Options are limited to get Stone away from the other students. Drastic times call for drastic measures. A fight ensues but not one readers might immediately think.

This leads to a showdown building for a few issues now. Is Principal Stone Mistress Harsh? Shish? Or someone else? The answer starts a domino effect that draws out another big reveal. Readers will have much to break down as things come into focus.

Its’ fallout sends the young hero on a new path. The closing pages builds the danger as Damian closes in on his fathers whereabouts. Once arriving, it is clear to see he has more than he bargained for. The final image speaks volumes as readers brace for what’s coming next.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #9 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Simone Di Meo, Rex Lokus, Giovanna Niro and Steve Wands (DC COMICS) - Cover: Howard Porter

Williamson gifts a healthy portion of this issue to Damian’s story. The high school times have been a refreshing break from the other Bat books. Seeing Damian actually be a kid instead of Robin will win over readers. The showdowns unfolding clear up some lingering plot points. The pacing keeps events moving without lingering too long for the fallout. Once the final act being, writing hits its’ main points while bowing out on a sold end note for now.

Art duties are spilt with a returning Di Meo and Niro heading up the Batman areas. The introduction to the Bat-Cave 2.0 is presented with an excellent two-page splash. Man-Bat’s gloating comes off as both menacing and leveling up from where he’s been. This is complemented later in the book with another strong two-page spread.

Čižmešija and Lokus tackle the high school. Spotlighting Damian being young and foolish works to kick his story into high gear. The Shush segments get a two page splash that will answer a few points for fans. The art brings out the best of Damian’s reactions to news as he heads into the action. The spilt art teams brought much for fans to be amped up for heading into the promising next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 8.3

With Man-Bat nearing completion of his plans, Damian Wayne’s luck appears to be turning with this latest chapter. Williamson gifts fans payoffs for certain plot points with the writing. The art teams split duties to give Batman and Robin their own distinct look before closing with a stand-of final page. This isn’t your average Bat book and that’s a big win for fans.

Mistland #1 by Felipe Castilho, Felipe Watanabe, Natalia Marques, and Deyvison Manes (stout Club Entertainment/Comixology Originals)

Castilho juggles with many characters in this opening charge. The inhabitants of the Mistland range in many different emotions. Fighting for control establishes the power struggle. As the different groups begin to emerge, readers have to start cyphering where the motivations come from. This mirrors the themes one would see in a “Game Of Thrones” esque story. This is a big win for readers as the true intentions remain hidden for now. Judging by the final page, there will be much to dive into this new world more than the shocking conclusion.

Watanabe, Marques and Manes combine many elements to craft the world of the Mistland. With the rivaling parties, their conflicts sets the tone for the book. The story of Erik The Last explorer gets a full page guide walking the readers through his journey. The final trek of the chapter depicts the many residents of the land in more peaceful times. It is a stark contrast to the final image, which will have fans guessing until the next chapter drops.

FINAL POINT: 8.1

Through the wonderment of a fantasy land lies a dark secret. Castilho’s writing walks readers into the tensions of the new landscape. The imagery of Watanabe and Marques depicts elements brewing that hits a new gear when the last page debuts. This will be a book you’ll want to keep an eye out for on NCBD.

HARD STYLE JUICE #1 by Clay McCormack, Ricardo López-Ortiz, Heather Moore, DC Hopkins, and Jasmine Amiri (Comixology Originals)

McCormack sets the early stages of a mystery that shows no holds barred. The dynamic of the Castro family is complex at its’ core. Mona and Rey’s bond is a connecting point to the audience. It carries the story into the latter portion of the book to its shocking ending.

As someone who’s been around the behind the scenes of an indie fed, the writing captures the good and bad reality. It gives more weight to the deeper mystery at the core of this drama. Once readers arrive at the close, McCormack bookends events with a solid ending point. It will catch readers with a hold that they won’t be able to escape from until the overall finale.

López-Ortiz, Moore, and Hopkins give fans electric pro-wrestling images in-between the drama. Right from the opening page, the art establishes the fast paced in-ring work. It also catches “the Ghost” fighting “Burly Bill” later. The lettering for “SUPER KICK” mixed with the bright coloring pops the panel.

The near full page introduction of Rey Castro comes off like a monster event. It plays into the pro-wrestling theme perfectly as being larger than life. The ensuing drama gives a balance to Rey’s “day job”. The moments with Mona only add to the tragic closing act. With a show-stopping final image, the art will have readers talking after the final bell hits.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The family drama of the Castro family jumps off the top rope and connects for a huge win. With fine writing calling the action on the page, the art team brings exceptional imagery fitting for the pro-wrestling landscape. After the closing page, readers will want this series to be their new fight forever.

With Man-Bat at the center of attention, the dynamic duo dives in. What they have found is a combination of unique circumstances and family bonding. BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Rex Lokus and Steve Wands (DC Comics) looks to provide those answers and much more.

Let’s take a closer look and see how things shape up.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Rex Lokus and Steve Wands (DC Comics) Cover: Simone Di Meo

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

While in pursuit of Man-Bat, The dynamic duo has some company crash their investigation. Flatline, who has a history with Damian Wayne has arrived in Gotham. Her mission is to find her missing sister Mila. Batman gives the go ahead for Damian to help her.

In his absence, an unlikely figure enters the equation. Shush has been helping Man-Bat on his latest caper. It appears as she’s changed sides. She approaches Batman with an offer he might not be able to turn down.

This issue begins with a flashback of Mila telling her story. Readers find out that she’s not exactly lost. Mila has taken up the family business of crime. This doesn’t sit well with Robin. However, Flatline proves “blood is thicker than water.” Flatline sets up the distraction allowing Mila to escape.

Meanwhile, Batman is listening to Shush’s pitch for teaming up. The only question is that of trust. Can Batman really side with someone who’s identity reflects a dangerous rogue. Shush gives slight insight as she leads Batman into a possible break in the case. After they arrive, it seems as their luck may have run out.

How does events play for both heroes? Being split away, each has their own troubles to deal with. The action doesn’t break from its standard as conflicts arise. Once the fallout begins, it leaves one hero with an unlikely partner to pick up the pieces of the case.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Rex Lokus and Steve Wands (DC Comics) Cover - Nikola Čižmešija

Williamson breaks the issue into two very separate tales. The Flatline story gives fans a showcase into Damian that we rarely see. The emotional reactions to Flatline’s actions jump out. Seeing the usual focused Robin acting a tad reckless was a solid twist. Heading into the close, it will be a fun dynamic to see where things go for Damian form here.

As for Bats, its’ business as usual. Shush is written as a character of mystery. She doesn’t stray too far off the path. Seeing her drama play out with Man-Bat kept readers waiting to see her true motives. The ending is a bit of a surprise that will only have fans talking until the next chapter.

Čižmešija and Lokus step in for art duties with this issue. The opening moment with Batman and Shush is given a near two full page spread. It gives the moment weight as the sensing of motives play out. The same can be said for the Man-Bat appearances. The panels express the villain’s rage with Batman closing in.

The Robin/Flatline saga is gifted strong action panels. One scenario is with Robin and his mobile. The pace rushes through the art as the conclusion is sudden. It leads into more personal moments later heading towards the closing pages. The parting shot sets up a shift in events that will be ones fans will want to keep an eye on.

FINAL POINT: 8.1

With the appearance of Flatline, the dynamic duo is split from their case. Williamson mixes in big drama with exciting moments to move events along. Čižmešija, Lokus and Wands give both stories their own distinct looks with distinct images showcasing both leads. The conclusion will be one that leaves doors open to for readers to draw their own clues to where things head from here. Keep an eye out for this one on NCBD.

GRIM #16 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano dives back into Jessica’s latest challenge: Annabel unleashing pure Hell on an unsuspecting Earth! Even with allies around her, will it be enough to stop the rogue Reaper?

Let’s not delay another second & check this issue out!

GRIM #16 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

After being betrayed by her aunt Adira, Jessica and her friends Eddie and Marcel have been tested to extreme measures. The tables turned quickly as Annabel used Adira’s bribe for a returned soul to unleash pure Sin! Now, Jessica and her remaining allies have bunkered down inside a diner as Annabel runs wild.

This chapter begins with a flashback sequence in 2003 Afghanistan. A young soldier is inside a building with another wounded known as Monroe aka “Roe.” The narration walks readers through the mindset of the lead soldier. As he helps up his wounded partner, a head shot kills Roe instantly.

The soldier processes what has just happened. Taking heavy fire, the narration shifts to the soldier fearing the end is near. Suddenly another voice jumps in and asks an awkward question. The time snaps back to present. Eddie is the guilty party for interrupting the narrator.

The mystery voice behind the flashback is none other than the Priest, whos’ story takes center stage. With Jessica gearing up to lead a fight, the Priest’s story of life and loss ignites a deeply moving tale. Readers will become locked in as events play out. Once the final pages unfold, the conclusion hits heavy with the inevitable about ready to commence.

GRIM #16 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! Studios) Cover: Riley Rossmo

Phillips pens an intense chapter filled with deeply emotional moments. The Priest’s story is filled with the deadly side of war. The phrase “War Is Hell” is never an understatement. Phillips weaves readers through the many phases of the Priest’s time in combat.

It carries a heavy weight as the moments build towards a crushing conclusion. The impact it has on Jessica is very evident. Knowing what lies ahead, even someone who’s been surrounded by death can still be affected by the life of a living being. This chapter gives a moving start to an already layers saga.

Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano depict the hellish landscape of war with very bold imagery. The full page image of Roe’s death holds nothing back. The Priest’s reactions to events wear heavy with his facial responses. The ending of the flashback moments will hit readers very hard in their feelings. Even in the present, the art team closes events with a solid parting image, bracing for what lies ahead. Each creative member wastes no time in giving fans a return they won’t soon forget.

FINAL POINT: 9.8

Comics’ coolest book crashes New Comic Book Day with a powerful venture. Phillips’ strong writing lays the groundwork for a powerful chapter. The extreme landscape comes to life with the talents of Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano crafting the dark imagery of the Priest’s past. This chapter is prime example of why Grim gets so much praise in its’ storytelling.

SHE’S RUNNING ON FUMES #3 by Dennis Hopeless, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and Heather Antos (Comixology originals)

The life and times of Jeanie never cease to demonstrate her strengths. The simple task of giving her kids a happy birthday doesn’t allow her to escape the drama surrounding her. Hopeless doesn’t shy away from her challenges. Seeing her deal with a rude camper is prime example.

Hopeless crafts the scene with excellent back and forth commentary with Jody. Their relationship is far from perfect, but its’ Jeanie’s will that pushes it forward. The closing act shows a drastic change in events. Where it ends up will be anyone’s guess.

Jenkins captures Jeanie’s frustration and doesn’t let readers forget about it. The moments with Corn Dog reflects the strain her new “assignment” is taking. Even when the family breaks away for a fun day, the range of emotions pour off the page. This is very evident in the latter half of the book. Once the turning point happens, Jenkins gives the moment a dramatic flare before closing with an ominous panel.

FINAL POINT: 8

The looming danger of Jody’s past haunts Jeanie’s present with another strong chapter of SROF. Hopeless dabbles between dire straits and defiant will with the writing. DUKE #4 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, and Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound entertainment/Image Comics - cover: Ben Oliver)

One thing is for certain: If you want action, you have come to the right place! Williamson orchestrates huge moments while delving into Duke’s complex situation. The conversation with the Baroness is filled with an uneasy tone of reluctant trust. Fans will gravitate towards how Duke takes over running the escape mission. For any new readers to the fandom, it’s prime example of how he has become the legendary leader of G.I. Joe.

Williamson also sets events in motion for the finale through this chaotic scene. Duke is written as unbreakable much like his spirit. This drives the final act forward. Once events lead to the closing pages, the writing places the key players in their spots for what will be no doubt a classic finale.

Reilly and Bellaire spare no expense in giving fans bold action images. The face-off with Baroness and Duke is boiling over with tension and anxiousness. Duke’s demeanor shines through leading to its’ eventual outcome. The escape from the Pit kicks off with a HUGE two page spread that locks readers in for the action.

Wooton’s lettering here is the perfect touch to the frantic motion going on. These images guide readers into a solid final act. The closing full page panel will have readers pacing for the final to drop. It’s another sign of fantastic work from this creative team.

FINAL POINT: 9

With danger at every turn, the franchise of the G.I. Joe fandom shows why he is that of legend with another excellent read. Williamson constructs a hero’s unbreakable will through his writing. For this entry, DC Comics has been on a roll with their superhero stories. That said, one has made an argument for being the best of the best. Pairing two icons together is an easy win. Having one of comic’s best creative teams continuously deliver hit after hit? That’s what makes certain runs legendary.

Now at an anniversary issue, the series flips the mirror to spotlight two villains and their first encounter that sparks a dangerous alliance.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #25 by MARK WAID, DAN MORA, Steve Pugh, Tamra Bonvillain, Adriano Lucas and Steve Wands unveils the first meeting of LEX LUTHOR and THE JOKER!

Let’s take a closer look at the pair’s initial meeting.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Years ago in Gotham City, The World’s Finest swoop into a casino in danger. The attendees are running from a poisonous green gas. Inside is the clown prince of crime, The Joker. Superman inhales the deadly gas and takes it into space. Batman breaks thru a door to confront his old enemy.

Once defeated, Joker is transported by the pair to Arkham Asylum. Even put in a straightjacket, Batman warns the doctor nearby to be careful. The doctor hears the warning and the heroes leave. Suddenly, the doctor reveals he’s wearing a mask. Behind the disguise is non e other than Lex Luthor!

Readers see that Luthor breaks Joker out for a mission all their own. A map of a madman could lead to immense power. For all his smarts, Luthor and his team can’t crack its code. The solution: bring in another madman to break the encryption. Simple, right?

With these two combustible personalities, its anything but. Their path leads into places that defy logic. On the way, their conversations provides an insight that will be a hit with the audience.

Will this pair reach their goal? The final act provides a definitive answer as it marks a beginning of a deadly new pairing for years to come.

Waid dives back into the first meeting theme with another great chapter. The dynamic between Luthor and Joker has always been a tense one. Waid never lets that escape the pair’s different motives for their caper.

Pacing helps keep the unpredictability rolling through the story. The best example of this is the pint where Luthor and Joker have a “heart to heart” about motivation. This moment lights the match for the eventful blow-up later. Let’s face it, with the Joker involved, does anything run smoothly? The closing act plays into what some may expect, but its not a bad thing. Events wrap up with an excellent final page. It leaves a lasting point for stories to follow involving these two legendary evils.

The art captures a vintage time early in the World’s Finest time. Joker has a classic purple suit of the times. Pugh shows the insanity of the Joker in a mid-panel, demonstrating them being “twinsies”.

This leads into a journey reflecting the script key Joker is translating. The images give a sense of magic and wonder. This gets a break with a full page panel showing the breakdown from Luthor and Joker’s perspective. The back and forth game between the pair exemplifies the unpredictability of their team-up. The parting image is a solid way to end one chapter and start many more throughout the years.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The ultimate odd couple stands out in an unforgettable first meeting. Waid takes readers back in time with a classic story. The art demonstrates their unlikely methods of teamwork with solid imagery that fits such a vintage tail. Readers will be very pleased to see this piece of DC history hit the LCS.

SHE’S RUNNING ON FUMES #2 by Dennis Hopeless, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and Heather Antos (Comixology originals)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Jody had been the family’s main source of income. After moving to Deepwater, Missouri, Jeanie questioned how they could afford the move. Jody brushed it off and said it was handled. Little did she know it was handled via drug running.

Everything came to a halt when Jody was involved in a terrible car accident. With mounting bills and pressure, its’ now up to Jeanie to fill in the role whether she wants to or not.

This chapter opens up with a flashback to the couple’s first encounter. At a Tom Petty show, Jody nearly causes the show to shut down with an altercation with another concertgoer. After being scolded by Petty, Jody tones it down and everyone resumes enjoying the show.

In current time, Jeanie watches Jody is attended to in the hospital. She crunches up the hospital bill in hand. Jeanie takes the kids back to the laundromat. Once they arrive, some clothes have been stolen.

This adds on further to the downward spiral for the family. With more mounting bills, there appears to be no hope in sight.

Readers watch as Jeanie tries her best to keep things afloat. Jody’s absence isn’t only affecting the family. it’s also affecting his business partners. How is she going to handle all of the weight of the problems?

The closing act provides a time jump that leaves an emotional punch. It’s an intense moment that reflects the dire times which the family finds themselves in. Get ready for an impactful close to this chapter.

SHE’S RUNNING ON FUMES #2 by Dennis Hopeless, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and Heather Antos (Comixology originals)

Hopeless holds nothing back as the problems keep mounting for Jeanie. The writing slowly builds up the pressure she is facing. When one problem is started. another one comes along even greater. Readers have to applaud Jeanie’s strength to carry these burdens.

The flashback sequence gives a small reprieve from the overwhelming trouble of the present. It’s never a bad thing to see Tom Petty appear on page. This gets bookend with a powerful flash forward. The closing act is intense as the drama finally boils over. It leaves a deflating image for readers to end events with.

Jenkins juggles a few timelines with this latest chapter. The Tom Petty sequence reflects happier times. Once in the present, the emotions are worn on Jeanie’s sleeves with every panels. Readers can only watch as she tries everything to keep the family moving forward. The close brings out many feeling. It’s final image is a strong gut-punch as to where things land with this story.

FINAL POINT: 8

The emotions run high as Jeanie’s struggles to stay one step ahead slip out of grasp. Hopeless crafts a depression glimpse into Jeanie’s overpowering will to keep the family intact. Jenkins provides the heart-breaking visuals leading into the next phase of an unlikely path.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #44 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the war is almost over! New York City has been caught in the crossfire of a criminal war for months. The only thing standing in defense has been the Amazing Spider-Man and some of Marvel’s street-level heroes. With the war drawing to a head in Central Park, all Hell is about to break loose. Who will be left standing?

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #44 by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna, Marcio Menyz and Joe Caramagna looks to give readers a ringside seat to the action.

Let’s see who’s left standing at the end of this round?

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #44 by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna, Marcio Menyz and Joe Caramagna (Credit: Marvel Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Madame Masque has been the focal point for NYC’s gang war. After orchestrating the conflict, Masque is poised to take over the underworld. With Central Park being the location, Masque and her main rival, the Beetle, meet. Surrender is not an option. The battle ensue.

During the melee, Tombstone makes his true intentions known. After working as an uneasy ally to Spidey, he confronts his daughter and clips her wings (literally). Now with the Beetle off the board, can Spider-Man stop the fury of Madame Masque’s army?

This chapter begins with Spidey squaring off with Masque. The unified front of Beetle’s army and Spidey’s friends are holding their own. This is working until someone changes the call. Tombstone tells Beetle’s forces that the alliance is over.

With the shift in numbers, Spidey’ friends are overwhelmed. Count Nefaria blasts Spider-Man with enegry. Joining in the attack is Silvermane. The barrage is too much for Spider-Man. Luckily, some back-up arrives and not at a moment too soon.

Jackpot, Spider-Boy and Luke Cage enter the field! Will it be enough to win?

Readers see how the good guys make a stand to defeat Masque once and for all. Its’ outcome isn’t cut and dry. While the resolution solves a few lingering plots, there is now a bigger threat at hand. The smoke has cleared. One is left standing. The final image lets readers know that there’s still some unfinished business. It’s a chilling farewell to Gang War that still will send shockwaves through Spider-Man’s life for some time to come.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #44 by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna, Marcio Menyz and Joe Caramagna (credit: marvel Entertainment - Cover: Marcos Martín)

Wells presents a steady pace into Central Park’s last stand. With Tombstone making the call to pull out early, the focus shifts into Spidey and company overcoming huge odds. It is a bit surprising who the back-up was that swung momentum in the good guys favor. Considering there are two relatively new heroes finding their path, it was a bit odd seeing them as the key factors. Granted, Luke Cage does make up a LOT to balance his trio out.

From here, the issue heads into much of what connects readers with Spider-Man. Spidey’s stand-off with Masque plays right into character. The ending is fitting, along with the final act. The parting pages set up a bigger stage later but concludes all on a solid landing.

Romita and company give the big battle a full send-off. There’s an excellent two page spread early featuring the shift of power with Tombstone leaving. This is matched with another great two-page spread when the cavalry arrives.

Even with their masks on, the final stand-off with Masque and Spider-Man still carries a great deal of emotion behind it. The visuals reflect Spidey’s frustrations and anger with his body language. The final act captures the resolutions of the invested parties. None stand out more than the winner of the war. The closing visual leaves a haunting reminder that the war is over…but not forever.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #44 by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna, Marcio Menyz and Joe Caramagna (credit: marvel Entertainment - Cover: Tadam Gyadu)

FINAL POINT: 8

The battle of Central Park ends with a clear-cut winner in Spidey’s last chapter of the Gang War crossover. Wells puts the emotional weight on Spidey’s back with solid writing. Romita and the team give the issue that “big fight feel” with some memorable visuals. This will be one for all Spidey fans to check out on New Comic Book day.

GHOST MACHINE #1 (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

The wait is FINALLY over! Ever since New York comic Con, fans have been waiting to see the debut of a media company with top line creators leading the charge. With word of mouth hype carrying a buzz through the past few months, GHOST MACHINE has been the talk in comics. Their message is a simple, but important one. “Characters First”.

Geiger. Junkyard Joe. Redcoat. Names that have already made an impact on NCBD. Names that are opening more doors as a slate of books are ready to be unleashed onto fans looking for something new at the shops to invest in.

GHOST MACHINE #1 by Geoff Johns, Jason Fabok, Gary Frank, Bryan Hitch, Peter J. Tomasi, Francis Manapul, Brad Meltzer, Lamont Magee, Maytal Zchut, Ivan Reis, Peter Snejbjerg, Brad Anderson and Rob Leigh welcomes readers to the start of history in the making. Let's take a closer look and assess their first impressions.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue is staged as an introduction into all the Ghost Machine titles. The opening page is a statement defining what this company is all about. This is perfect for new readers to fully grasp what will make this imprint stand out from others.

From here, the book heads back into the world of GEIGER (by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank). As a family sits around a campfire, a man is telling the story of a man whose contact with a nuclear blast has changed him forever. In this same time period, Tariq Geiger is facing off against a group of strangers. One makes an offer that stops him cold in his tracks. Geiger is toyed with the idea of becoming fully human again.

During the ordeal, others are mentioned as possible adversaries to the radioactive anti-hero. That person is REDCOAT (by Johns and Bryan Hitch). Simon Pure narrates his tale of fighting for the British in the Revolutionary War. After he is shot in the head, his journey begins as an immortal.

The journey ties into the Unknown War taking place inside the shared universe of the Unnamed Universe. Readers are gifted a timeline to follow events as many moving parts comprise an ever-winding tale that is certain to grab readers attention.

The next phase of Ghost Machine is ROOK: EXODUS by Johns and Jason Fabok. Readers witness a fascinating new world where Humans with unique helmets of power affect the animals species they are patterned after. One such human known as Rook has control over certain aviary creatures. His journey has him on the trail of the mysterious Direwolf. How will this tie into the “War Of Wardens”? Readers look to receive that answer in April.

Readers next stop is the all-ages line of FAMILY ODYSSEYS. Peter Tomasi and Francis Manupal are the creative team behind THE ROCKETFELLERS. A family from the future has been sent into witness relocation. Where better to send a family of the future than the past? Their adventures into normalcy look to entertain while their future’s past catches up with them.

Set in the same all-ages line is HORNSBY & HALO (by Tomasi and Peter Snejbjerg). What happens when Angel and Devil families swap children? That’s what readers find out with the stories of Rose Hornsby and Zack Halo. Warwick, New York will never be the same as the young leads explore their lives while outside forces have a vested interest.

Last but not least is HYDE STREET. The horror-led line features the works of Johns and Ivan Reis. In Dallas, Georgia, a man is being unruly towards a young boy. After the encounter, the boy appears to put something mischievous into work. This is presented after a vintage Hyde Street Amusement pages by JOHNS, REIS,DANNY MIKI & LAMONT MAGEE.

Mixed in the middle is “Devour” (by MAYTAL ZCHUT & Reis). A woman’s dream of transforming her body appears to become a nightmare with an item called “Devour”. Once the final image hits here, readers will have no questions concerning the chilling tales created via Comics’ next big thing.

Right from the start, the one-shot makes every story VERY reader friendly. Keeping stories to the bare minimum presses creators to simplify introductions. This is a great formula as each story has enough to tease where things go after here. Plus, the addition of character bios (ala DC’s “Who’s Who”) is so invaluable to make the connections of “Characters First”.

This really hits its’ mark with the Unnamed Universe characters as Geiger and Redcoat have been featured more than most others. As the prelude for Geiger’s new direction leads, Johns balances Geiger’s panel time while building up Redcoat. It leads to a solid open-ended conclusion for the regular series to start in April.

ROOK: EXODUS, looks to be the wild-card of the current slate of books. Combining sci-fi fantasy with a looming mystery, Fabok’s art depicts a landscape of endless possibilities. This seems like an adventure that isn’t going to be like anything else out on the market.

The FAMILY ODYSSEYS line makes an excellent debut as well. The ROCKETFELLERS has a unique concept behind it with Tomasi’s blending in the traditional family dynamic with catching drama. Manupal’s art shines bringing in great action moments. This is led in with a full page introduction that kicks things off for readers of their new favorite family.

HORNSBY and HALO lures fans in with a deceptive tale. Tomasi’s set up brings a tale wrapped with divine intervention. Paired with Snejbjerg’s art, the story of Rose and Zach has much more than meets the eye going on.

The horror feel of HYDE STREET & its’ related books blend vintage themes with excellent artwork. The classic “amusements” by Johns and Magee along with Devour by Zchut have such a throwback feel that readers can’t help but become invested in these tales.

Reis builds up the presence of Mr. X-Ray by leading the unlucky soul through the town till the final moments. The closing panel fits perfectly in not only introducing the readers to this story and the terror forthcoming.

FINAL POINT: 10

Have you ever wanted to be at the starting point of “the next big thing”? Led by a creative line-up second to none, Ghost Machine ushers in a fan accessible era with glimpses of characters with bigger futures ahead. There is no way after reading this issue that you are not fully invested in a movement defined by “Characters First”.

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, it’s the beginning of the end for the Krakoan Era! Since Jonathan Hickman took the reigns of Marvel Entertainment’s Children of The Atom, fans have had mixed emotions. Some (like myself) have loved the fresh takes and concept of one nation under Charles Xavier. Others have yearned for a return to basics.

No matter what side you fall on, the next phase of mutantkind history has left a strong impression. But like all good things, they eventually must come to an end.

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #1 by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham ushers in the X-Men’s greatest fight with everything in the balance! Let’s take a deeper dive into what is happening now.

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #1 by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham (credit: Marvel entertainment - Cover: Pepe Larraz)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue opens up with Scott Summers being a prisoner of a mysterious figure int the old west. Scott’s narration leads readers along as this dream has been recurring for quite some time. Being presented to members of Orchis, Scott’s life is sentenced to death. As he’s led out to be hung, a familiar member of the crowd watches on. It appears to be Jean Grey!

As Scott is hung, he appears to be flying. Puzzled by his thoughts, Scott wakes up in a van He is being led into a courthouse in Paris. The crowd is unruly as he walks by. Knowing the danger looming, Scott tries keeping a strong reaction. It keeps him going and maybe fate will send some help.

Meanwhile underground, Colossus and Wolverine make plans to free Scott before his trial. Readers are gifted a throwback moment as the pair executes a famous maneuver.

The story swings back to Scott as he’s confronted by Alia Gregor and Omega Sentinel. The conversation turns into a cat and mouse play as Alia tries taking a victory lap at the X-Men’s downfall. Scott is matching her word for word. The banter gets ended by Sentinel as Cyclops prepares for trial.

Readers see how the X-Men family looks to rebound from the events of the Hellfire Gala. Major players look ready to fight back. New alliances are forged. Will it be enough to save Cyclops? If the ending pages have anything to say, Gregor’s plans may have won the first round, but there’s a lot of fight left in the X-Family.

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #1 by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham (credit: Marvel entertainment - Cover: In-Hyuk Lee)

Duggan ties in the classic plot thread of Humans vs. Mutants extremely well. The fear and anger can be felt the minute Cyclops leaves the van. Duggan gives a fair share of the story to Wolverine and Colossus. The friendly comradery between both shines as they make their attempt to free Scott.

The other members of the X-family make contributions with an excellent speech from Emma Frost. The closing pages look to add another wildcard in the mix but the writing is only in the beginning phases as to where their endgame leads.

Werneck and Valenza leave readers with some fantastic visuals to follow. The opening shot of Scott facing the mob reflects the anger and hatred for being who he is. The dialogue with Scott and Alia shapes the one-upsmanship both physically convey. Alia displaces bitterness as her crowning achievement. The other characters get some excellent visual panels.

The full page shot of Wolverine flying at the camera is sure to gather more eyes on the story. This all leads into a surprise ending that leaves no doubt war has been declared. With all the moving parts, Werneck and Valenza display nice pieces to reflect an already explosive tale.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The final battle between Humanity and Mutantkind explodes onto the pages of the X-Men’s last stand! Solid writing and dynamic art set a high standard with the darkest hour yet to approach.Trust me, you won’t want to miss picking this up on New Comic Book Day.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

When the Necrostar is released from its’ planet prison via Brother Eternity, the Titans lead the charge to stop the oncoming threat. Beast Boy takes a huge gamble and makes himself into the one being that might be capable of stopping the threat. He turns himself into a Starro.

After the space altercation, an unforeseen presence makes their move. Amanda Waller has sent Doctor Hate to intervene. Beast Boy is now infected and attacking the earth with spore-like creature. The people of Earth are transforming into beast of their own.

The story picks up with Cyborg and Raven floating in space. Both are reeling from the initial encounter of the Necrostar. As they start gathering their surroundings, they see a number of the DC Universe’s most powerful heroes trying to stop Beast Boy’s attack.

Meanwhile back on Earth, ANIMAL MAN is being overwhelmed by the surge of animal-humans taking over. In Bludhaven, Nightwing and Batman are doing all they can to help the innocent survive the ordeal. When a young boy becomes trapped in a car, Batman flies in for the save. During the rescue, Batman is wounded via a bite that nearly rips his arm off.

Nightwing swoops in for help but the next moments switch everything on its’ axis. What transpires pushes Dick Grayson to his limits. In the process, he (along with readers) find more clues about the spread of the animal infection. Will it be enough to turn the tide or will another force factor in to delay their cause? If the final image is any indication, the battle has only just begun for the heroes of the DC Universe.

TITANS: BEAST WORLD #2 by Tom Taylor, Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, Brad Anderson, and Wes Abbott (Credit: DC Comics - Cover: Björn Barends)

Taylor keep things centered around the face of the Titans for this chapter. The struggle Nightwing shows to the conflict shows many sides. Not only is the world around him becoming unglued, but he is forced to confront a threat he never wants to face. The moments before that fight occurs, Taylor shows Grayson’s fears pouring out as he knows what is coming. The emotional gut-punches with Batman and Nightwing play into how readers can sense the conflict is weighing on them.

The other main characters of the story gets their times to shine. None Moreso than the main culprit behind the escalation of events. With a power struggle looming behind the scenes of a global crisis, Taylor paces each level out to keep a fair balance of drama and action.

Reis, Miki, Anderson and Abbott bring stunning visuals to this issue. The full page image of the DCU heroes fighting Gar-Starro makes an immediate statement. The more low-key moments center around Batman and Nightwing. The reaction Batman gives the young boy after a question is asked shows a different side to the Dark Knight.

This leads into some fantastic action, building towards a monstrous full page image that amplifies events. Mixed with other heroes emotions, the closing panels cap off the feeling that the tide might start turning or be lost forever. There is much to enjoy with the art displayed here.

Taylor constructs an exhilarating start to the latest DC event. Right from the beginning, the pace moves things along fast enough to impact readers with how dangerous the threat truly is. Tying the Necrostar to a classic DC character throws a different look to the conflict at hand. Once the story moves to the middle act, Taylor takes a risk and it pays off in spades.

Putting the most unlikely Titan as the focal character opens up many avenues to take the story in. The interactions with Batman alone provide great moments. The ever expanding universe Dew Craig has created grows further with this arc ending chapter. It is always impressive to see how many original characters appear in each issue but this one might be a record breaker. With the feeling of intergalactic war looming, it fits the story perfectly and gives it a serious tone.

The revelations surrounding Grant and his powers also make big impact as he gets thrown tough calls that his inexperience might not be ready for. All of this leads to a closing act which no reader will see coming. It’s paced well with the action not to slip under the radar as one chapter closes and a brand new one looks to begin.

Craig and Firestone add in great two page spreads. When readers think “War”, the art doesn’t falter in presenting that aspect of the story. There’s a great one page spread introducing more characters before all hell breaks loose with the battle of good versus the Draigonian Empire. The complimenting two page full spread is sure to be a hit with fans. The closing moments throws everything in reverse as Grant’s decisions change the course of the book as the chapter ends.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The opening arc for Grant Garrison closes on a solid note with an issue that brings the action. Craig and Finestone construct big action and high drama as the strength of Starstorm might not be enough to carry the weight of the universe in his hands. Make sure to check this issue out on New Comic Books Day!

LOCAL MAN #6 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast.

For this entry, we are heading back to Farmington and the next chapter in Jack Xaver’s redemption story. Since its’ debut, LOCAL MAN has been a tale that blends elements of the founding members debut books of the 1990’s with modern storytelling. After the first arc was finished, the question became “where do we go from here”? Fortunately those questions were quickly answered as the next chapter is finally hitting the LCS this week.

LOCAL MAN #6 by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio grows the legend of CROSSJACK even further. Let’s take a closer look and see how things shape up from here, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Jack Xaver aka Crossjack is a former member of the super hero Third Gen. After public humiliation with his firing, Jack returns to his hometown with a very unfriendly welcome. His past didn’t take too long to follow him home as a rising body count lead to more skeletons coming out about his past adventures. After the death of Camo Crusader and stopping the serial killer Deliverance, Jack now tries adjusting to life in his new stat quo….again.

This issue kicks off with the residents of Farmington trying to enjoy some delicious goods at Auntie Inga’s baked goods. Much like any small town USA, news travels fast. With Jack’s return, the reaction is mixed. However, everything stops at a drop of a dime as Jack walks in the dinner. Jack meets up with Igna, his only friend who’s not as all that she seems. A private moment is interrupted by Igna’s father but that’s not the most shocking interruption at the dinner.

With a gunshot going off, readers see that the legacy of Camo Crusader isn’t going gently into the quiet night. The mood is tense as Jack needs to face this latest challenge head on. How will public enemy #1 handle the moment and following fallout?

The next phase of the story throws an interesting mystery into Jack’s already complicated life. The town of Farmington has already been rocked by Jack’s past catching up. With the final page, Readers will question what they are seeing as the wait for the next issue begins.

Seeley and Fleecs pick up right where they left off with a great return issue. The complexity of Jack Xaver is one of the best aspects of this story. Jack is not a morally sound character but tries being better when the hero side needs to appear. The dynamic between Igna and Jack is a nice addition to the overall tale. This issue shows that Jack might have one more supporter by the time it’s all said and done but can his conscious carry the weight? The threat this issue plays right into the climate and opinion of public disillusion when dealing with the news. It’s a great take that Jack plays off from with ease. The closing chapter leaves many questions but fans will be very happy they picked up this issue and series.

The art encloses the magic of small-town talk right from the start of the book. The panels showing the various residents gives an idea of the varying opinion of Jack. Thus is capped off with his full page appearance for the issue. There’s also solid action panels when Jack has to switch to “Hero Mode”. This plays right into his reactions to being a hero again. Jack’s world is ever-evolving and the art mirrors the constant swings of how he feels. This leads into the closing moments with a final image that no one will see coming. Strong work as always with how this side of heroism is portrayed.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Jack Xaver is back whether his hometown wants it or not! Seeley, Fleecs and the team don’t miss a beat as they gives readers great character moments with grand artwork to send Crossjack onto his next adventure. Local Man is always a great puck-up on New Comic Book Day!
