GRIM #24 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Death is unavoidable. No matter where you are in life, it is always looming. This is the same for Jessica Harrow. The daughter of Death itself and a human has had quite the journey. From confrontations with her Aunt Adira, The End and original Sin itself, it has all left scars on the enigmatic reaper.

Recently, Jessica has been trying to avoid fate. She doesn’t want to mantle of Death. Another has taken the throne by default. This leaves Jessica in new territory. It is one driven be her own choices.

GRIM #24 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS) delivers its’ pen-ultimate issue.

Let’s take a closer look at where events land now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Phillips splits this tale into two separate parts. The first locks in on the new Death. Marcel’s first assignment is bringing in an author. His dialogue with Desmond Pell is filled with compassion and understanding. Pell is very much against accepting his fate. Their interaction mirrors how sometimes one doesn’t get to finish their story. It is very touching as the new approach works to segway into the other side of the morbid coin.

Jessica and Time take center stage here. Under the guise of Jessica “living”, the story walks readers into a future uncertain. Phillips gives the audience a personal look at her new path. It is heart-warming with Marcel’s dialogue lurking in the background. Readers watch as the emotional gamete is covered. Events lead into a perfect ending to where the story needs to go. A final page says very little, while speaking volumes. The chapter adds so much perspective into an already masterful series. It’s another smash success.

As for the art, it’s another huge win as Flaviano and Renzi guide readers into Marcel’s sublime approach. It leads off with an excellent full page image. The conversation feels comfortable knowing the circumstances. The two page splash makes this point hit. Pell is presented as an agitated writer looking for the last line. Marcel shows nothing but compassion as the transition phase commences. This carries into the next section of the book.

Readers watch Jessica’s life play out. It is presented in a series of incredible full page panels. Each showcase Jessica at a new phase of her stat quo. Paired with the dialogue, it is sure to connect on all levels. Even with the brief dash back to Pell’s departure, Jessica’s time steals the show. It leads into the touching closing pages. Knowing how the past brought them to the present, the future will be exciting to see for the finale.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

As the times change, Jessica and her relationship with fate provide an incredible read. Phillips goes into overdrive to deliver an instant classic. The powerful art from Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano take readers into the deeply emotional journey to the final destination. It is a bittersweet lead into what will be an unforgettable finale.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1 (BOOM! STUDIOS/IDW)

Heroes in a half-shell….Morphin Power! It has been since May 2023 that two pop culture favorites joined forces. There have been many changes since that time. The TMNT franchise had a new animated movie and series relaunch at IDW. Fans witnessed the Power Rangers endure the Darkest Hour into its’ latest series from Boom! Studios.

Going back for another adventure, there would have to be a terrifying threat. How does the team-up of Lord Zedd and Shredder sound?

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1 by Ryan Parrott, Vincenzo Federici, Raúl Angulo and Ed Dukeshire starts an all new saga for the teenage super teams!

Let’s take a closer look at where events land now!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1 by Ryan Parrott, Vincenzo Federici, Raúl Angulo and Ed Dukeshire (BOOM! STUDIOS/IDW PUBLISHING)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Parrott goes for a more cataclysmic feel for the opening act. Seeing Tommy (Green Ranger) and Leonardo fighting a losing battle makes a statement. Readers watch as the weathered pair discuss their mission relays about past failures. It builds towards a shocking end. This proves to be a perfect reset point to the past. What starts as a familiar mission plot rolls into something more deceptive.

Readers watch as the team-up provides excellent interactions. The dialogue hits its marks while moving plot in the shadows (literally). One the action slows down, the writing puts something in clear view. Both squads are on a losing defensive. Readers watch as they attempt to rally but it never carries a sense of truth. The teams feel overwhelmed and finished. A few members break rank to try the impossible. This carries a sense of impending danger with the radical choice. As unwise as the mission was, the result turns extremely grave.

There are some clues provided to the endgame. It sets the stage for one last showdown for the chapter. Through the frantic scene, there is a moment that stops the show. It is perfect for a last page. How readers handle it will be another story. If fans wanted an event, Parrott delivers round one in spades.

Federici teams with Angulo for art duties. They kick off events with a solid fight. The full page image of Tommy and Leo duking it out sets an early pace. This flows easily into its’ abrupt stop. Time jumping back, the fight in Paris packs the punches. Readers watch the mix-match team-ups create some fun panels. It doesn’t hold a candle to the North Dakota brawl.

The two page splash is a certified crowd pleaser. It locks in on the wild scenario playing out on the moving train. Dukeshire’s classic lettering elevates these moments higher. Seeing the reflection of failures start creeping in only makes the last mission more grave. The art team throws in a full page image of the bad guys plan. It kickstarts another go-around of action. Even with a great half-page entrance for some key players, nothing tops the final page. The bold full image is complimented by the painful close-ups. After seeing it, there’s no chance to skip next round.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The third installment of MMPR x TMNT swings for the knockout in the opening round. Parrott’s writing takes both teams into new avenues. Federici and the art team deliver on action and surprises with each page. The final page leaves readers in somber territory. Prepare for a wild adventure in waiting.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #43 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Erica Slaughter is a complex individual. Growing up in the Order of St. George is anything but normal. The same can be said for one of her mentors, Jessica. On a case, the two struggle to find common ground. This doesn’t help with a rising body count.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #43 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) continues on a look at Erica’s early days.

Let’s take a closer look at what unfolds now.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #43 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tynion plays up to his strengths for this chapter. Using his “slow burn” methods, the uneasiness between Erica and Jessica is brewing. Jessica’s simple flirting with a bartender pushes Erica to move on her own. This results in a confrontation with the monster’s victim. The dialogue shows Erica’s frantic search for answers. Being her early days, she is much more hopeful and warm to conversation. This is a very big contrast of who she becomes.

The story shifts to the town’s discovery of another attack. Jessica’s coldness to Erica is very clear. Readers can easily pick up on the tension. The writing does tip off some possible clues about Jessica’s reasoning. It doesn’t wait to shift attention. Once on Erica, pacing speeds up a few events. Tynion provides a few different looks to the pair heading to close. The more intriguing story is now Jessica. Her actions in the final page elude to more mistrust. How this pair looks to function as a unit is anyone’s guess at this stage. I have no doubt Tynion is cooking something up for a monster finish for this tale.

Dell’edera and Muerto construct a deep look into the fractures in Jessica and Erica. The simple flirting plays off Erica’s budding doubt. This provides some awkward interactions. The conversation with Aaron feels very wholesome (as far as monster hunting goes). This quickly disappears when Erica sees a victim. The mannerisms on display raise the horror level as Erica strives to get help for the girl.

This moves events to a flashback sequence for Jessica. Muerto’s coloring gives a perfect dream state to his moment. It doesn’t hide the terror. Even as readers get a steady look at the fallen friend, Jessica’s sadness never breaks. This plays into more friction in the present. The art locks in on the clashing of hunters. Both get solid time to build their tales. Jessica’s proves to be the stronger of the two. The closing pages indicate her self-doubts as the case seems to be slipping further away. This is classic SIKTC. Another stellar job with constructing the case.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The peek in Erica’s early time shows off the growing fractures of mentor and student. Tynon draws out the brooding clashes with the writing. Dell’edera and Muerto delve into the old wounds to draw out Jessica’s current dilemma. SITKC never falters on delivering its dramatic points through emotional landscapes.

The Last Witch: Blood & Betrayal #2 by Conor McCreery, V. V. Glass, Natalia Nesterenko & Taylor Esposito (Ghost Glyph Studios) - BOOM! Studios

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

McCreery doesn’t delay in venting out Saoirse’s impulsiveness to Brahm’s situation. The writing expresses her anger perfectly. This causes a bit of concern from her group. If she’s not fully focused, all could be lost. This leads into the initial conflict. Readers watch as the upper hand is gained. This leads into a heartbreaking scenario of events.

The writing takes readers back to a happier time with Brahm. It is quickly revealed to be a rouse. Readers watch as the events cause Saoirse to lose focus. Her frustration is thwarted by more deception. McCreery never lets this aura escape the issue. Even when Nan and Hugh make their last stand, the emotional heartache shines. This leads into a fierce closing to the conflict. Readers see the after effects pour out of the young witch. It leaves the issue with plenty of thoughts along with a calm aura. There’s no doubt this story hasn’t even scratched the surface of what’s coming. What a huge win for readers.

Glass and Nesterenko open with the search underground. The usage of light and darks is fantastic. It allows for the dark mood to start peeling back. There is a solid vision of the maze revealed. It gives a needed pause before the first attack is made. This is met with some steady action shots as events move to a more personal area.

Brahm’s memories are filled with bright spots until the last panel. Once Saoirse arrives at this point, the same emotional pull can be felt. The deception plays its’ part to set up the final stand. Seeing how manipulative this plays will strike a few chords. It results in a haunting series of events to close. Knowing what Saoirse was put through, her anger expands in these panels. It leads to a more controlled finale. Her anger lingers in the parting shots. A full page image takes one player off the board. This rolls into a stark reflection of what she is becoming. It leaves readers seeing more is on the horizon with an ever struggling soul.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

When it’s all about family, they should steer clear of Saoirse’s. McCreery orchestrates a superb rescue mission with the writing. Glass and the art team hone in on the heavy emotions wore in the conflict. This series checks off everything you want from a great comic.

GRIM #23 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

When it comes to Jessica Harrow, “ordinary” is never in the equation. Death was destroyed in an encounter with The End. Since that point, no one can die. Being the heir to her father’s throne, Jessica struggles to accept her fate. This has caused many issues. None may be greater than the told taken on her allies.

One makes a tremendous sacrifice to stop Original Sin. This sends Jessica into a confrontation that will either save the day or send it into more peril.

GRIM #23 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS) continues its excellent run with a brand new chapter.

Let’s not wait another second and dive into the story!

GRIM #23 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Right from the opening page, one question rings true: “Why does Phillips Hate Eddie?” I’m completely kidding but the opening page hits readers with tremendous force. Sealing a tragic fate opens up the next round in the ultimate face-off. Jessica and The End’s game continues to pose many questions. The writing adds more weight into the multi-layered themes of this series. It also establishes if Jessica can continue to handle the gravity of her destine path.

The End’s challenges make readers deeply think about concepts of the life/death connection. Jessica’s banter with her challenger leads to strong moments. Phillips leaves Jessica very vulnerable to the questions looming. It only endears her more to the audience. Once a choice is made, her path takes a fresh new turn. Many possibilities feel open at this stage. This leaves room for a more surprising epilogue. Judging by who takes center stage, it’s very clear Jessica’s actions have caused a major ripple effect. How this plays out will be exciting to watch.

Flaviano and Renzi deliver on the emotions with Eddie’s fate revealed. Renzi’s coloring takes this to new heights. It quickly transitions to a strong full page of Jessica and The End continuing their game. Seeing Jessica’s pent-up emotions released makes quite the impact. This transitions into the current stat quo problem. The End poses a deep question via full page image. This causes Jessica to react with much pause in her voice.

As the story transitions to a new destination, the questions weight begins to show on both. The art locks in the discovery portion of the answers. This moves the story into a very unique point. Renzi’s light coloring gives away the sense of wonder. The reactions of joy and wonder are written on Jessica’s face. This is a much different place than the epilogue. The final page gives the readers a startling reveal before mic dropping a massive change in Jessica’s world. Time in and time out, this team doesn’t miss.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Jessica & The End take their dangerous game to another level with this latest installment. Phillips poses many threads to the reader with phenomenal writing. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano convey the overwhelming emotions of the struggle at hand flawlessly. There truly is nothing like this series at the comic shops.

McCreery doesn’t delay in setting up the next challenge in waiting. Readers see how Saoirse is going to be deeply challenged. It is a strong move that has larger implications later. In the immediate present, the story showcases a happier point for Saoirse, Brahm & Hugh. Considering what they just went through, the moment is a welcomed change of pace.

The dialogue isn’t scared to address some of the darker moments of last arc. A prime example of this is Brahm missing his eye. Hugh’s off commentary draws the ire of Saoirse It leads into showing the family bond that has been a strength of this series. Even when new characters swing through, that sense never leaves. It actually becomes a catalyst for the close. McCreery mixes in new reveals along with a deep conversation with Nan to appease the curiosity. This boils into a strong ending. Seeing where the group now heads leaves the audience excited for more. What else could readers want?

Glass and Nesterenko delve into the darker side of magic with the opening pages. The art makes a bold decree as events start taking shape. It transitions into a more light-hearted moment. Hugh’s never-ending grin sets the standard for these panels. Even with his bad joke, the scenes never stay too stagnant or weighing the mood down.

This sense moves into the newest character introduction. The half page panel pops as Brahm makes the discovery. It is accompanied by a few action scenes. Let’s take a closer look at how the drama starts to play out.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #42 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Nobody in Comics does slow-burn drama like SIKTC. The beginning of this chapter is innocent enough. Tynion throws in more “normal” moments between two boys at a store. Their banter is playful enough until a sheriff walks in. The small town has a problem with a rising body count of children. Readers know it’s only a formality until Erica Slaughter arrives to investigate.

The dialogue with Jessica and Erica lends itself for a touch of comic relief. Seeing the young Erica having to cover tracks for Jessica proves a possible disconnect. It lends itself to ease back into the building drama. Tynion’s writing constructs a clear picture of what is unfolding. The closing pages re-enforce the dangers looming in the small town’s forest. It ends events on a striking finish while teasing an inevitable confrontation.

Dell’edera and Muerto welcomes readers into the quiet small town scenery. The panels reflect the snowy chill taking hold of the residents. Readers watch as the two clerks provide a pause for the rising drama. The facial reactions with the sheriff deliver on growing the threat lurking in the town. They also amplify when help arrives at their doorstep to help.

The interactions with Rainey, Jessica and Erica put more of a spotlight on Jessica than first thought. The two page spread confirms Jessica’s misdirection. It also leads into exposing Erica’s growing confidence in hunting. The remainder of the chapter steers back towards the threat reveal. Panels are more candid in delving into the problem. The closing pages tie into the full exposure of what’s causing the havoc. A striking full page image puts a definitive stamp on what is brewing. Fans should have no doubt what is on the horizon here.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

GRIM #22 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Phillips takes Harrow into dangerous waters with her current dilemma. Opening with a chess match versus The End is an undeniable scene. Their banter eludes to an ultimate showdown coming. The aura surrounding Time keeps readers very intrigued. Knowing a possible future, both demonstrate a sense of denial. It provides a set-up for the main drama course.

Adira’s prescence is polarizing to say the least. The catalyst of Jessica’s drama now appears hat in hand. This shift in persona causes much pause amongst Jessica and her allies. It leads into a face-off issues in the making. The payoff doesn’t miss its’ mark. Phillips crafts an unlikely point of possible hope. Before readers can get settled in for it, a massive curve is thrown into the final page. Long time readers better brace for impact. It is a pivotal and game-changing moment. Another reason why Grim gets all the praise it does.

Flaviano and Renzi construct some of the most ingenious images of the series to date. The chess match reveal between Harrow and The End is gifted a full page visual. This moves events into the deep rooted conversations between Time and Jessica. Both are reluctant to accept their future. Their facial expressions show how both are slowly breaking in their denial.

Once Adira enters the picture, panels lean into her deep regret of failure. The art shows the remorse in her actions. Readers watch as this quickly gives way into the previously mentioned showdown. Pacing is heightened as the action heats up. A half panel exposes the damage done. In its’ aftermath, there is a sense of uncertainty in what lies ahead. The art team doesn’t take long to remedy this. The closing page is a jaw-dropping full image. It impacts everything as someone’s destiny is altered forever.

SOMEHTING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #41 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

The long wait is finally over. It has been since November of 2024 since readers delved into the world of Erica Slaughter. Recovering from her encounter with Charlotte Cutter, SIKTC focused on Erica’s early years. This trend continues with another glimpse into a dangerous hunt from her part.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #41 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) kickstarts a brand new arc in the award winning series.

We have waited long enough. Let’s dive into the latest chapter.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #41 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tynion plays his best hand early in this chapter. The trademark of this series is the slow burn drama. In the opening, a young Erica attends the services of a fallen victim. It is reflected in the narration a connection to a recent monster hunt. the dialogue with one of the family members depicts the emotional coldness needed for the line of work. Readers see a lengthier example of this with Jessica Slaughter.

The relationship between mentor and student is complex at best. Readers watch as Jessica is wearing down to the grind of the business. It is also noted as to the forming of Erica’s personality in this mix. Her interactions with Aaron Slaughter are prime points of this. Their dialogue ranges from playful to business. Tynion never lets the mood sway too far from the looming danger of the Order. A new assignment draws many reactions. It teases the audience long enough to hook them in. There’s no better example than the last page. Settle in for a new case with deadly overtones.

Dell’edera and Muerto start events off at a funeral. With no dialogue for two pages, they walk readers through the somber times. The mix of flashback panels to present mirror what Erica is thinking. It is a prime set-up before heading back to reality.

The interactions with Jessica and Erica feel organic with their connection. There’s a sense of “business as usual” in each panel. Erica’s acceptance of this “normal” is written on her face. This transcends to a solid two page spread. The brief panels segway to her contact with Aaron. Panel set-up moves their conversation right along to its ending place. The art sets up a tease of more dangers in their new assignment. This plays up to the last page perfectly. Like a true horror movie, the full page image jinxes itself with the dialogue. It’s a great place to pause for now and reload for what’s coming next.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

SIKTC comes back with its’ winning formula inisde of a flashback saga. Tynion puts the major players in place with the writing. Dell’edera and Muerto bring the complex relationships into the spotlight before setting off on their next job. The early days of Erica Slaughter are ones that warrant the attention of fans whenever they drop on NCBD.

GRIM #21 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Leave it to Phillips and company to throw more surprises into a deeply woven tale. The introduction is very familiar to long-time readers. As it progresses, this changes quickly. Phillips plays off Jessica’s deciphering to bring forth the latest addition to the cast. It also puts Jessica into a unique position. Her avoidance of her destiny has been a main driver for her character. This issue showcases many possibilities (along with great one-liners) as different timelines are shown.

None might be as stronger hitting than the last one. It is a vision that can be unavoidable. The writing vents Jessica’s frustration. As someone who wants her own choices, it seems that might be out of her control. This leads into a very shocking confrontation. Another factor has been thrown into this equation. Phillips places a fantastic twist that will catch readers off-guard. It serves as a perfect cliffhanger for Jessica as she searches for answers but finds more questions waiting. Top level storytelling at its’ finest.

Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano provide a re-imagining of a classic moment to start events off. If anyone has questions about great lettering, Napolitano instantly reminds everyone why he’s one of the best. This leads into a full page image that is anything but a rewind. From here, the journey for Jessica stops by a new timeline. The “college days” hides the underlying themes while mixing in enjoyable moments.

This is all capped off by a gorgeous two page splash of multiple timelines. There are great easter eggs homages planted in the spread (“Eight Limbs”!). Time and Jessica’s confrontation carries a tension to it that makes the close even stronger. Flaviano and Renzi crafts stellar half page splits of timelines. This builds to the final full page panel. The mic drop moment is guaranteed to lock readers in until the next chapter drops.

It brings a close to a darker chapter of Order history while launching a new path Maxine may not be ready for.

With Three SIKTC artists on the book, the art changes in phases. Dell'Edera takes the opening moments. The tension with Maxine and George doesn’t take long to boil. Maxine’s trepidation is very noticeable as George tests her.

Fuso steps in for a more subtle time. The mingling at the house takes on a whole new feel. Maxine questioning George in front of Albie Cutter stands out. Their conversation volleys. The art locks in on key points. Albie’s smile versus Maxine’s stare downs. It ultimately drives to a haunting picture on the wall. The eyes of Charlotte Cutter never escape the house. Erica Slaughter. The complex monster hunter has always been a magnet for trouble. Even in her early days, Slaughter has had a shroud of mystery haunting her. Before moving on from the battle with Cutter, there has been a focus to look at her past.

With the 5 year anniversary of the “Slaughterverse” at hand, a prequel is very fitting. It allows for a key change in direction to form. A new player entering the deadly game. Who is this imposing figure and what do they want with Erica?

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #0 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) takes readers back to right before the Archer’s Peak mission.

Let’s not wait any longer & see where things lead now.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #0 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Even with a prequel, nobody has mastered the craft of “slow burn drama” like James Tynion IV. A simple case morphs into an introduction for a debuting threat. The conversation between Sarah and Victor brings forth many avenues for drama. Sarah’s recap of events plays into the foundation of Erica’s drive. It is capped off by a subtle panel of Sarah hugging Erica. At this moment, readers watch as Erica lets her guard down just enough to be “normal”. It’s a side rarely seen. Readers watch a break in her armor form but not for too long.

Pacing keeps the emotions running high all chapter. The remainder of the hunt plays into familiar territory. Erica handles her business before getting the call for the next case. Once the attention is back on Sarah and Victor, Tynion finally dishes a cold response to Sarah’s impactful support of Erica. The fallout drops a big reveal as readers find themselves wrapped up in the chaotic landscape of the Order of St. George. With a superb cliffhanger, the sins of the past might find their way into the present timeline. Can Erica hope t survive? Only time will tell.

Dell’edera and Muerto continue to balance the build and create exciting panels for this special issue. The flashback sequences pop right off the page. With Muerto’s excellent coloring, the scenes come across as warm and feature Erica in a new sense. The full page image of Erica hugging Sarah is an easy connect with readers.

It plays off the multi panel pages of Victor and Sarah recapping. The art paints him as a charismatic being looking for details. With each page, readers can feel the tension building around Victor. These moments are briefly overshadowed by a two page conclusion to the flashback. The “feel good” moment is short lived as Victor comes to the end of this questions. His response speaks volumes of his character. With the final two pages, it becomes crystal clear of how imposing he will become in the present. The use of shading in the closing panel sells readers on what lies ahead as year 6 begins for the Boom! Studios franchise.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

The prequel mission before Archer’s Peak hits many emotions as SIKTC delivers another fantastic read. Tynion’s slow burn writing keeps readers locked in wy before the last pages. Dell’edera and Muerto provide the backdrops for an initial hunt which leaves many questions in its’ wake. Brace for the forthcoming impact. SIKTC is back in a big way!

GRIM #20 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Jessica Harrow’s (after)life has always been complex. Being the daughter of Death comes with many strings attached. As the heir apparent, Jessica has inherited some enemies. The manipulations of her aunt have now led to Hell On Earth. Is there any hope left?

GRIM #20 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS) sets forth a new direction for the coolest book at the LCS!

Let’s take a deeper dive on what’s unfolding now!

GRIM #20 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Since its’ return from a brief hiatus, the direction of Grim has been spotlighting featured characters. Delving into their backstories has provided many new layers to each involved. This issue focuses on a relationship many have been waiting to find out about: Death and Lilah. Phillips orchestrates this with many twists and turns before hitting readers with an emotional punch.

Death is portrayed as a lovestruck soul questioning all he knows. On the other hand, Lilah is very comfortable in her sexual preferences as his “partner”. It is a unique dynamic that stretches through this chapter. Even with the assist of the world’s best in psychoanalysis, Death struggles to sort his feelings. The resolution is a tremendous punch. It’s paired perfectly to Depeche Mode’s “Strangelove”. Relationships are complex enough. Factor in their circumstances and the story is unapologetic in handling the fallout.

It sets a stage for a present day reveal which harkens on the uncomfortable sins of the past. Readers watch as a reunion unfolds which has mixed results. There isn’t much time to process this event as the story heads into its’ close. Once here, Phillips leaves readers with another reveal that is sure to raise more eyebrows as Jessica continues to journey into mystery.

Flaviano and Renzi bring the intimacy and strain of Death and Lilah to the pages flawlessly. The panels take readers on a journey into their doomed union. Using a offset color range for the therapy session works to make each panel pop. From here, the art heads back into displaying the range of feeling between the lost lovers. It builds towards a strong image of Death with the song lyrics swirling around him. Nobody does this better than Tom Napolitano. This carries to the full page closing image. The art team drops one more reveal before parting with this very impactful chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

Delving into the secret past of Jessica’s parents take readers on quite the journey. Phillips crafts a mature and frank look at their union with excellent writing. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano deliver on huge moments and heartbreaking images. After reading this, there is no doubt on why this book stands out from the rest.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #40 byJames Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) Cover - Jenny Frison

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tynion gives readers a deep cut into Erica’s past with this latest chapter. The emotional toll that she goes through as a hunter is heavy. Seeing how devastating one action can take magnifies that even more. With this chapter, a truly gruesome incident happens that wears heavy on her soul.

Readers watch as Erica opens herself up to Aaron Slaughter of what she’s experienced. The writing is blunt and paints a cold picture. Hunter life is anything but normal. Showcasing the range of emotions Erica bears will hit readers very hard. The fallout from this leads to a somber conversation between Erica and Aaron. How events wrap up feels devoid of feeling. It paints such a painful theme of Erica’s life and how she must process each victory and defeat. It is an intense insight that will have readers talking.

Dell’edera and Muerto depict Erica in a broken state. Her facial expressions tell a story of loss and remorse. This gets a counter balance when Aaron appears in frame. Being someone who’s lived this lifestyle longer, his reactions appear more “normal” than one might think it should be.

Everything does change when Erica begins to flashback on this particular case. The use of purples break up pages to exemplify what’s unfolding. This works very well to shift focus. That said, there is no greater image of this book than a certain full splash of Erica screaming. How the art and lettering work in this instance is incredible about portraying the horrible tragedy without showing anything to the readers. There is no doubt what has just occurred. It carries into the closing moments. With a simple panel and question, the images end with a feeling of remorse before departing.

FINAL POINT: 10

In this latest chapter of Year Zero, readers see a terrible tragedy through Erica’s eyes. Tynion’s writing floods the story with pain and anquish. The art team tastefully brings this tragedy to the forefront with the imagery. SIKTC continues to set a high bar with their intense storytelling.

BRZRKR: LOST BOOK OF B #1 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the saga of a half man, half god, all killing machine has returned. Spawning into a live action & anime series, the adventures of B (aka Unute) continue to draw attention on a greater scale.

Heading back into the comic shops is a brand new story. It is even more special due to the fact that the original creative team have returned for this project. This is the first time since the conclusion of the original series in March of 2023.

BRZRKR: The Lost Book of B #1 by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney, Bill Crabtree and Clem Robins (BOOM! Studios) focuses on a lost chapter in B's legacy.

Let’s take a deeper look at how this chapter fares.

BRZRKR: The Lost Book of B #1 by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney, Bill Crabtree and Clem Robins (BOOM! Studios)

***POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kindt and Reeves blend the historic aspects of Genghis Khan into the unruly violence that follows B wherever he goes. Seeing the strategy used to recruit B plays well into the lore of the conquering dictator.

Readers watch as the offer of power is great for some but what is it ultimately to a half god? It's a question that applies some ethics in-between the many stages of brutality displayed.

There are some very creative devices planted firmly into this chapter. One that comes to mind involves a catapult. It ushers in a defining moment for B while mixing up the familiar formula of attack, destroy, repeat. Once events shift gears, pacing does move very rapidly.

In a sense, the shift fully showcases how even power isn't the most valuable asset to someone. The fallout from the closing act is as expected. It leaves things as mysterious as the lead character is. There is no doubt there are more chapters to be written on an already impactful legacy in the making.

Garney and Crabtree return with the intense imagery this series is known for. The story doesn't wait long to unleash B's fury. A near half panel announces an angry Unute into action. Panels becomes consumed with the violence on hand. It is not one for the weak of heart. The views effect the savagery of barbaric times. This feels like a familiar realm for B with his untamed association with violence.

The "calmer" times let readers in on Khan's over-confidence. The expressions being made show a man who thinks he's in full control. As events unfold further, the blind confidence becomes oblivious to what's on its way. Once the closing act kicks in, the art team goes bold to usher in the closing.

From a close-up on B's eyes to the pain he soon after inflicts, nothing escapes the reader as his pain is dished out on the masses. The closing pages set a more tame tone as this chapter closes. It's a fitting end with a bird flying with a message. Readers will have much to divulge and enjoy with this return to form.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The latest trip into Unute's trail of violence is flooded with familiar themes of redemption through pain. Kindt and Reeves construct a layered insight into the man behind the constant mayhem. Garney's fierce visuals expose Unute at his purest nature. It's a strong read that is a welcomed addition into the ever-growing legacy of a conflicted half man and half god.

GRIM #18 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This is a tale of two stories. Both carry equal weight. Since its’ return, Grim has been spotlighting members of the supporting cast. Harold (featured on the cover) gets his minutes of Fame. Phillips crafts an ethical question surrounding his existence. It is a strength to his character, This also allows two key figures to have some of their history unveiled. It is a great opening lead mixed in with the rock and roll vibe this series is known for.

The other story jumps to present events. Catching up to where the world has gone to Hell (literally), Phillips bears the importance of Harold in his greater role. Seeing him mix it up with his “boss” made for a well-paced break in the drama. The build to confronting the present day horror gets another layer added. Once the showdown finally commences, the impact on the readers will be huge and worth the wait.

It is literally impossible to read an issue of Grim and not be completely blown away by the art and imagery. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolintano take the flashback moments and dive deep into the unpredictability of that era.

Under the words of Johnny Cash, Harold’s tale pops off the pages. The panels of view through Harold’s eyes are next level creative. This leads into a two-page montage that encompasses Harold’s journey. It’s filled with haunting lyrics, excellent coloring and show-stopping images. The conclusion ends with a level feel. There is no extra drama needed. It is a conclusion that just says goodbye. In this line of work, there is no heartfelt goodbyes. It’s always strictly business as the final page states.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The build in this series has been purposely slow to have readers ready for the conflict. Brombal finally sets off the action in two big battles. One is Maven defending Jace’s “children” from Jolie invading the swamp. The other is René waiting to face off with the Butcher one on one. With the rising body count, the fights have become personal. Let alone the Houses of Boucher and Slaughter watching in the wings.

The writing delves into the manic behavior of Jolie. Risking hunters on her personal vendetta showcases how unhinged she has become. Maven pulls out some huge surprises as their battle commences. As for Jace and René, the writing shifts into making both very similar in actions. Their banter is very driven and strikes a few nerves. This builds towards a strong finish with a few tricks up the sleeve. Seeing how things are left, there is now way to even guess how the war will end.

Fuso and Muerto craft impressive fight scenes throughout the entire issue. Maven revealing her attack is a two page spread that readers will be raving about. Talk about a game-changer! René and Jace’s brawl is violent and emotionally draining. It holds nothing back as each page becomes more intense. Both fights end in ways that no one will see coming.
