One notable aspect of this series is the creative freedom the writing is having. Higgins & Groom keep finding new ways to present both Spidey and Venom. Merging the two via Blood transfusion opens up some doors. This leads into an interesting sequence before the final fight. Readers watch as the pairings take on the competition head on. It’s a throwdown worthy of finale status.

During the wild melee, one character stands out. The writing allows Eddie Brock to become something he’s struggled with: being a hero. Against his greatest “frenemy”, the conversation gives Brock validation on what he is doing. It is a moment that shifts everything. This pushes towards a very questionable conversation. The dialogue presents its case with little pushback. It serves as a solid landing spot for the conflict and overall plot. The fallout leaves many doors (and in one case aspirin) open to explore. It is a great ending to what has been a very fun read to experience.

Towe & Rosenberg open up with a welcome to an unlikely lead. The image of Spider-Venom is an amalgam of both which tips off the direction of the story. This jumpstarts the action as the final battle commences. There’s plenty of action to go around. Readers will enjoy all the mix and matches of combatants. Seeing Spider-Venom hyper uppercut Spider-Hulk is a prime example of this brawl for all.

Once Brock’s side is slipping, a huge back-up crashes the scene. The full page image is impressive and wild in the same breath. This allows for Brock to connect with a weakened Peter Parker. Watching the acceptance of his role, Brock’s confidence starts picking up. The images lock in on the painful history between both. Its’ fallout starts the closing off on a good note. The move throws a proposal into conversation. This results on impacting the parting images. The final page teases where this all may go form here. At worst case, it sends readers home on a pleased note.

The final face-off between Spider & Symbiote delivers on the action! Higgins & Groom takes readers along for an unlikely redemption story. Towe & Rosenberg present the huge conflict with exciting displays. The Spider-Man/Venom mythos takes a fun turn fans don’t want to miss!

RADIANT BLACK #37 (MASSIVE-VERSE/IMAGE COMICS)

Chicago is not the same “Windy City” of old. In the wake of the Catalyst War, it is still recovering into its’ new stat quo. Another person trying to find his way is Marshall Ward. His life was forever changed in the Massive-verse event. After defeating Jaeger, Radiant Black wants to get back to a sense of normalcy. It seems that chances of that are all a dream.

Anytime you have Shift and Radiant Red in a book, it’s definitely got my attention. Making them a couple? This has some great storyline possibilities. It temporarily breaks away from the dictator-esque state of Chicago. Readers see how the city is under lockdown. Jack Marlow & The Franklin Group have enforced their grip on the people. The moments unfortunately mirror current events. It doesn’t escape the dialogue. Marshall’s voice becomes one of reason in a dire time.

Readers see more clues come into focus about Marlow’s moves. Watching a resistance group plan addresses the “Second earthers” dilemma. They are quickly thwarted by a certain pair of lovebirds. Adding them into the overall picture complicates certain areas. It also as previously eluded to makes for endless possibilities. Their interaction with Marshall sets forth new boundaries. Shift’s decree overshadows Date night with Mari. The writing shows Marshall’s attempt for a normal break. This becomes upstaged by the close. Marlow’s plans come into focus in a huge way. It is a clear message to readers how the stakes have been raised. Excellent chapter to read.

Costa returns to art duties for this chapter. The foreshadowing of Red and Shift works for the payoff later. Lakeview on lockdown sends a disheartening message to kick events off. The two page splash expands on that uneasiness. Marlow’s new “enforcers” make an impression as being reckless. This doesn’t go unnoticed as Radiant Black hits the scene. Another solid two page splash addresses the trouble brewing. From here, there is no looking back.

Shift and Red bring the action to a resistance group. They come barging in via full page panel. Readers will love seeing a Fastball special done in the melee. The art hits the fast paced points while Shift banters. It leads to an awkward meeting with Radiant Black. The expressions on display speak volumes. This gives a transition to date night. These panels tease some happiness in Marshall’s life. It is fleeting as the ending reminds readers of the new landscape. The closing page will cause many questions as more trouble is on the horizon. The art hits the bullseye with this chapter.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Dark times loom in Chicago as Jack Marlow’s plans start taking form. Higgins and Clark bring this era in with string writing. Costa and Fernandes’ art deliver on action and tense situations. Readers are really going to see what kind of hero Marshall Ward is very soon.

Higgins and Groom hit the gas pedal and never look back form the opening page. Readers see an opening chase set a high pave. It concludes with a very shocking line: “Where’s Bruce Wayne!”. The story pivots to a more familiar territory for Batman. A body is discovered and many questions arise. In this circumstance, that is the only time events seem similar to the past.

An unlikely confrontation starts off a frantic action sequence. The writing throws in a few key twists before mixing in another startling reveal. Its’ proceeded by strong dialogue which sets the stage for the explosive encounter. This spirals into high-octane excitement. Readers watch as the fight payoff cashes in. There’s no shortage of delivering a superb conclusion to the clash. It leads into a very solid final act. The writing gives the backstory of events pushing towards a shocking final panel. There’s no way to walk away form this book without immediately wanting more!

D’Urso and Monti helm the majority of art duties for this chapter. The starting pages tease the search for clues to the new world. It is capped off by an impressive full shot of Batman finding his target. The moment is complimented by another near full shot of Bat doing what he does best. This provides a transition to Avoca’s latest victim. The scenario locks in on the gruesome discovery. Readers see how this puzzling discovery is just the tip of a larger iceberg.

With another bold panel, Batman arrives to confront the Sheriff and Mayor of Davistown. The sense of fear rises with each image. This rolls into another fantastic action sequence. D’Urso and Monti spare no expense on delivering a thrilling stand-off. This leads into more dramatic reveals, including a full page villain transformation. Readers will be enthralled with what’s happening here. A spectacular full page finishes the fight in style.

Art duties are handed off to Mora and Bonvillain to wrap things up. Their flashback pages paint the descriptive picture of events. The full page trio shot is one that won’t escape fans’ view. This moves events right to the mic-drop panel. Seeing who’s there at the end will have readers buzzing until the next round starts. There’s much to enjoy with this debut.

Trying to re-envision the Dark Knight is easier said than done. Higgins and Groom put an incredible spin on the myths with their writing. D’Urso and Monti blaze an electric blend of action and dram with phenomenal art. This has all the makings for a must-read event readers could want.

ROGUE SUN #29 (IMAGE COMICS/MASSIVE-VERSE)

Family business is always tough. It may even be worse being supernatural protectors. Dylan Siegel and Aurie Bell have been put in this position. Both are young and vary in experience. That means nothing to Mourningstar. The dark being has sent their minions into the Massive-verse. One of those beings is Noxious.

With an axe to grind against an evil company, he’s been on the attack. The Rogue Suns have slowed him down but his next target hits too close to home.

ROGUE SUN #29 by Ryan Parrott, Nick Cotton, Abel, Bruno Frenda, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey pits the pair against the villain with Juliette Bell in the crossfire!

Parrott and Cotton throw a true moral complication into the story. Noxious is a villain with sound reasons of vengeance. Taking the fight to the company that killed his family crosses lines but readers sense the deeper push. Aurie’s dialogue breaks everything down. It forces the young hero to draw a line while getting the whole picture. For someone just coming into the hero game, she’s picking up fast.

As for her counterpart, it is business as usual. The writing catches Dylan defying his mentor role. The conversation with Brock adds some zip to the reluctance of Dylan. It leads to a fitting confrontation. There are a few solid twists in play, making for a stronger conclusion. It offsets the Marcus/Caleb side story very well. Readers watch as the fallout spins in a few directions. It shows both pros and cons to both Rogue Suns. The closing pages add more intrigue to the long game. One thing about this series remains true. Always expect the unexpected in dealing with the supernatural.

The art solely builds the Jillian/Noxious confrontation. Once the super powers come into play, the mood shifts. Aurie’s presences looks of patience to see where things land (after a punch). Dylan and Brock’s conversation locks in on Dylan’s building jealousy and fake confidence. Even as it gives away to Caleb and Marcus, the mood doesn’t differ away from the major conflict at hand.

Aurie’s next round of action doesn’t disappoint. Readers watch as the young hero goes for the save. The half panel scenes depict how she’s not ready for this throwdown. Once she switches techniques, the panels present a very surprising look. It also allows Dylan to make a grand entrance via near full page. The emotions carry over to the closing arc. Marcus and Aurie have a needed meeting of minds. It elevates the bombshell dropped in dialogue. However, nothing shows up the final page. A full page view gives an insight on what is about to head to Dylan’s doorstep (in time).

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

The “Noxious” story ends proving brains might be stronger than a sun stone. The writing throws many varying looks before revealing its true self. Solid art takes the audience through the ever-evolving conflicts brewing. Judging by the last page, there’s much more danger coming to Dylan and Aurie. Just another day at the office for the Massive-Verse team (which is a huge win for fans).

It must be something about the Radiant Yellow. Over the course of the series, it feels as when featured, it brings out the strongest work. That is no exception here. Higgins and Clark welcome Nance into the Radiant mythos. What seems like a mismatched character with powers turns into something even more deeper than expected.

The story follows along the down and out lead as she discovers the yellow power. When using her powers, she comes across a dire premonition. The dialogue mirrors her rough surroundings. There is no punches pulled. Readers watch as this leads into a plan of misguided action. The writing brings out the highs and lows of Nance’s new hope. It takes readers on quite the weaving path. Nance’s dialogue is filled with anger and sadness. Even when things look hopeful, that light burns out. These events push towards a bittersweet ending. The writing challenges the readers with time and destiny. It leaves with a sense of a brighter tomorrow due to someone’s darkest days. Absolutely phenomenal storytelling for this chapter.

Simeone fills in for art duties on this special tale. The opening page is a full vision of Nance’s rough living. Her discovery leads to some fun but important interactions. Once the premonitions start, the chapter turns into the somber tones of events. A doctor’s visit amplifies the failing sense of Nance’s actions. The coloring of Yellow gives life to Nance’s new direction. Ultimately, it isn’t enough to shape her destiny.

Her sister’s visit throws more drama into an already complex situation. Simeone locks in on the reaction of Nance as the visit’s truth arises. This leads to an impressive two page splash. Readers watch as this unlocks more hidden truths. Nance’s emotions cover much ground leading into the close. Once in this stage, the art sets up readers for what lies ahead. Simeone reflects the truth of matters with close-up of the eyes. It tells a more vivid picture to the readers. This brings forth a superb final page. It ties up loose ends while leaving just enough for readers to ponder. Excellent work in handling this very shifting tale.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

The complex legacy of Radiant Yellow stands apart from the Catalyst fallout in a must read chapter. Higgins and Clark construct an impactful tale of loss and hope. Simeone’s stunning visuals take this chapter to new heights. The Massive-verse continues to challenge the way readers look at superheroes. This issue is no exception.

Higgins and Groom come out the gate swinging with Team Spidey's rescue attempt of Miles. The one-liners come fast as Spidey is navigating through the combat. His banter offsets the uneasy tension building. Readers watch as the good times quickly disappear to the nature of the game.

Recluse and Miles (Spider-Prowler) both carry big scars on their sleeves. The writing showcases a more aggressive edge in their bouts. It does contrast the morals of Spider-Man himself. Luckily, he gets a more calm team member added. Having Takuya Yamashiro join the squad is a perfect addition. Readers see there's at least someone he can trust. Most of the other members have other plans in motion. This all gives way to a strong ending. The close builds up a hell of a main event for readers to pull up for next go around.

Towe and Rosenberg drop in a nice two page splash of the Miles rescue to set pace. Panels move fast as the action heats up. The symbiotes give a few different looks to team Spidey's attack. One of which tries playing off emotions. Readers can sense the trouble brooding behind the scenes. it's only a matter of time before it implodes.

The Team Spider swinging panel is eye catching. Seeing all the different spiders on page is a nice treat for readers. This quickly takes a back seat to Takuya Yamashiro's debut. The mid page shot is subtle but slips in enough story. It is a huge difference in comparison to Spidey interrogating another member. All events push towards the closing pages form here. The art delivers on setting the stage for something larger at hand. Considering what we find on the final page, readers will have to prepare for the wild action forthcoming.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

The latest installment shows desperate times call forth extreme measures. Groom and Higgins present the mounting tension with an excellent script. Towe and Rosenberg construct a high pace conflict with many moving parts. This series has been a blast to read and shows no signs of slowing down now.

One area of the Massive-Verse that has been needing attention is their rogues gallery. They have good antagonists but few reach the level of Shift. In a few short issues, Higgins and Clark have firmly cemented Jaeger onto that list of GREAT villains. Having him systematically attack is one thing. Making it personal with Marshall’s mother is crossing a few lines. This allows many themes to unfold. None greater than pushing Marshall out of his comfort zone.

The opening attack is pure adrenaline. The writing steps on the gas with the pacing. It leads into a disturbing moment of reflection. Jaeger’s depiction of Thalia Hall events sets forth more emotional blows on the fragile Ward. Even with the assist of a new character, readers attention never leaves the big showdown. There’s no hesitation in the punches thrown. The dialogue brings forth many buried feelings. It results in a steady finish before the closing. Once at this stage, the writing adds one more surprise into the mix. How this is going to play out should be something special for the Massive-verse faithful.

The art team doesn’t miss on starting off events with a bang. Marshall’s last minute save is rewarded with a near full page image. There’s no slowing down from here. Readers watch as the action picks up. Jaeger’s onslaught holds nothing back. After the full page decree, Jaeger’s motorcycle tricks cause a well placed transition to a more dramatic state.

Watching Jaeger recite the Thalia Hall events of the timeline establishes a dire mood. This revs up the action as Marshall attempts to fight back. His latest ally crashes via half page image. This leads into another invested throwdown. Where this fallout leads is to a more hurtful discussion. The panels never let Marshall’s guilt stop being on display. It pushes the fight into the finish. There’s a few near full page visions that wrap up events before the Lakeview epilogue. Marshall’s mannerisms go through quite a range before the last panel. Seeing what lies ahead throws everything in an uncertain place. One thing is for certain: there’s never a quiet moment in the massive-verse.

The Jaeger arc concludes in thrilling fashion. Higgins and Clark’s writing bring out the rage and frustration of The Catalyst War fallout. The art team gives readers plenty to enjoy with the action. There’s no doubt after this issue why the Massive-Verse is a must read each time out.

The focus shifts to Marshall and the Circle Guy News team. Readers watch as the humorous chat downplays the threats taking place. It’s the last calm moment before Marshall’s world gets rocked to its core.

Jaeger’s encounter is fitting for his villain status. There is a sense of uneasiness as the time displaced character gives his ultimatum. Considering his previous actions, one option seem off to a degree. There’s little time to ponder it before the action takes hold. Readers watch as Jaeger starts imposing his will. It leads into an explosive conclusion. Even as the dust settles, the writing teases a darker future on the horizon. Seeing a Massive-verse villain approach their agenda in this manner is refreshing. How the care-free hero responds to this will be fun to watch.

Ferigato and Costa kick off events with the fast paced raid on the dount shop. The panels reflect a frantic and unknown scene. It’s a very different vibe with Marshall and the CGN squad. Marshall’s reactions to their information varies. The moment gives pause before the events take a more serious turn.

Readers see Jaeger enter via a full page image. Marshall’s facial reaction speaks volumes. Seeing the villian’s proposal comes across with a mixed response. This leads to another Radiant to make their presence known. Pacing cranks up to a fever pitch. The fight escalates with a magnificent full page crash. This spins into another round of fighting. Their dialogue drives home the consensus opinion surrounding Radiant Black. This point haunts scenes until a new threat emerges on the scene.

Bludmoon’s appearance mixes up the dynamic for a big win. Seeing Marshall out of his normal element exposes a few things. His powers get tested with Bludmoon not holding back. Readers watch as their fight allows Marshall to release some pent-up rage. Once events shift to New Orleans, the attention shifts to Dylan Siegal. Their unique “friendship” reveals many similarities between both. Young heroes thrown into the deep end while learning how to navigate life. The result leads to a haunting close. Where this path leads Marshall is very uncharted territory.

One thing that has been evident since issue one is the Bell/Siegel family is anything but normal. The opening discussion between Dylan and Aurie hits its key points. The writing shows Aurie’s naive belief she can outsmart Caleb (the ghost in the armor). Dylan knows first hand how dangerous he can be. Readers watch as their first outing as a “team” goes off the rails. Luckily an old/new friend stops by to help.

Stating the Radiant Black/Rogue Sun interaction is awkward is an understatement. The writing addresses this heads on in fun banter. This rolls events into the main event. Readers watch as the unlikely trio work (somewhat) together to thwart their common foe. The fallout leads to a much anticipated conversation. Knowing what Marshall Ward is going thru in Radiant, his dialogue with Dylan showcases the young heroes growing up too fast. It will strike a chord with the readers. This transitions into a solid parting place for the Bells, but not without worry. It’s another key element that makes Rogue Sun such a great read. Always expected the unexpected.

The art locks in on Dylan’s building anger in the opening pages. This is countered with Aurie’s overconfidence. Once Bludmoon crashes the scene, pacing picks up. Watching the Rogue pair struggle dealing with a rescue attempt allows their guest to make a grand entrance. The half page image bring Radiant Black into the mix. It kicks off a series of great action shots of the trio.

In these moments, the art plays off the writing superbly. Reading Marshall’s eyes shows the readers the oddities of their history. It leads to a great group shot of the trio flying. The full page image kicks off the big throwdown. Each panel seems to feel faster in reflecting the quick action. In its aftermath, the art dive into the uncertainty of Marshall’s new stat quo. Dylan’s brashness works well off Marshall’s doubts. It’s solid perspective on the new hero’s direction. Once at the final page, more danger is teased with the parting panel. All in all, the chapter art gives readers much to enjoy.

“The Massive’s Finest” meet again for the first time in the post Catalyst era. Parrott & Cotton bring out the heavy questions haunting Marshall and Dylan. Abel and the art team blend the supernatural action with grounded talk between mutuals. It’s destine to give fans a “supermassive” shot on NCBD.

The event keeps Marshall grounded long enough to move back to a traditional superhero point. After his doctor appointment, Radiant Black meets up with Kieran’s team. Readers see the shock in Marshall’s reaction to seeing a dead man alive? The problems with alternate timelines. Knowing there is a killer on the loose puts Marshall’s peace at a standstill.

Not everything is all doom and gloom. The writing teases a more light-hearted Marshall adjusting to the dating digital world. It gives just enough of a break until the mysterious killer strikes again. Readers ride along as Radiant Black deals with another threat makes a splash. This leads right into the closing pages. As his new “friend” leaves (after dropping a “Clerks” liner), Marshall’s focus is back to business. Events wrap up on a more upbeat note. This issue lays a solid foundation as Marshall is still finding his way (both mentally & physically) in a new era.

Ferigato and Fernandes construct a solid opening. The conflict of mysterious assailants botched robbery ends with a bang. Marshall’s doctor visit shows the bruises of his other life. The art reflects the wear and tear on him in all aspects. This is short lived due to duty calling. The investigation reveals a new wrinkle at hand. Marshall’s reactions say it all as the shocking news hits. A half page flying shot wraps up some loose ends. The art captures his growing frustration as work/life balance is not becoming a reachable option.

After a full page splash shows Marshall in action, the art team switches up looks. This is very apparent in the dating sequence. The use of tiny panels conveys the challenges for finding someone. One potential suitor gets taken for a ride via a full page image. The mood shifts with another way with a darker half panel. Readers see as the latest victim is found. It is a striking image that shows the grave reality now sinking in. The art team gives the new threat a solid intro image. There is some action but not overwhelming. This all gives way to Marshall talking with Eva in the closing page. The final image will have the fans talking with curiosity. Another solid outing for this creative team.

The life and times of Marshall Ward take a more normal tone this chapter. Higgins and Clark steer into more traditional challenges via the writing. Ferigato, Fernandes and Carey depict the ever simple moments around the unfolding chaos. When you see “Massive-verse” on the cover, readers know where the bar is set. Rest assured this issue hits the mark.

With no Nathan by his side, Marshall tries finding balance. Readers watch as he tries finding some normalcy. This comes in the form a date. Escaping his alter ego becomes difficult. Once that stop concludes, a growing mood becomes clear. Perception is Reality. Not everyone loves Radiant Black.

This leads into the next phase of the book. Chicago is reeling from the Catalyst War fallout. Higgins throws in many twists as a new rogue debuts. Readers watch with Marshall as the public’s feeling boil over. It is a point that shows the downside of being a hero. Whether it’s drowning out the noise or dealing with fallout, the writing puts Marshall directly in front of it. This leads to a question of doubt before the final page. Once here, Marshall’s rebuilding may crash before it even begins to rise.

Ferigato and Fernandes pace out panels very well right from the start. The build to Marshall taking flight is good. It gives readers an insight to where things are now. A two page splash alludes to a return to normalcy. As the issue progresses, it is far from that. The images of downtown Chicago drive home the painful fallout of the war. Even as Marshall has a date, the sense of doubt lingers through him.

The podcast playlist image leads belief of Marshall dealing with public opinion. His mannerisms as he listens speaks of someone who’s still coping. There isn’t much time for him to fully grasp this. A case he shows up for proves to be much more dangerous than he thought. The art team presents a dire picture. It is one that sticks to Marshall as he ventures to the web. An excellent full image shows off the online comments looming over our hero. Readers watch as the fallout here leads into a dire reflection. There’s no rest for heroes concerning the last page. The writing splits this chapter into dealing with fallen heroes. Taking the story back to 1946 and 1955, Warner’s early scheming is given much room to grow. It gives a strong payoff with dealing with The Dart. As the blueprint is being laid out, there is some pause about buying into Warner’s plans. The result is a tragic turn. Its’ ramifications seem not to phase Warner as he still plots big no matter the cost.

In 1964, Warner is dodging the multi attacks on his overall goal. The writing shows him in his element. One moment, he’s swaying the public. Behind the scenes is another story. As the story shifts to Skylander, the mood is tense as actions start coming into focus. It never escapes the audience as how Warner’s plans have no regard for anyone else. The final act echoes that point with a parting flashback. Events conclude with a definitive statement on where things are going (even if they were in the past).

Reis opens the chapter with a unique vision for the panels. The flashbacks come with a mix of coloring. It opens as a black and white scheme. Once it starts rolling, certain splashes of color pop the art. This compliments the retro feel of the 1946 images. Readers sense the classic sense of superheroes. While temporary, it makes its mark before heading into darker territory.

Once the story shifts back to 1964, Reis goes again to the small color contrast images. It works to connect readers to the main characters involved in the drama. The only time that the book jumps into action is the 1955 Dart portion. At this stage, pacing helps to inject some fierce panels bringing the conflict to a head. From here, the story moves into its’ closing act. The story goes simpler with Warner getting the sole coloring. It balances out the high emotional toll taken before leaving events in a startling spot for the finale.

The pen-ultimate chapter of C.O.W.L.’s return delivers on a highly emotional chapter of life and loss. Higgins and Siegel show the steep cost of Warner’s schemes with the writing. One element of this entire saga has been proving who was worthy of the mantle. Higgins and Clark give compelling cases for both leads. However, one stands out for these final two chapters. Where the initial chapter starts showing doubt, the writing allows for the closing chapter to echo what lies within a true hero: the will to find a way to win for others.

Both books move at a steady pace. There are plenty of surprises packed in both. Readers will enjoy both but let’s talk the closing issue.

In the course of Radiant Black, Higgins has thrown in a few notable heartbreaking moments. #30.5 pulls out all the stops in Massive-verse lore. The last conflict carries the big fight feel needed for an event. It never stops raising the tense consequences until its’ explosive end. In its’ wake is the heartbreaking resolution. Walking with Marshall and Nathan through the past 2 years, it delivers on closing one legacy and forging a new one ahead. The event departs with an uncertain future filled with possibilities. Absolutely incredible work.

The art teams bring the intensity and emotion for this finale. A full page splash sparks the final stand between Radiant Black and Premier. It is matched with a fantastic two page spread involving Wendell and Marshall. Readers watch as the action ramps up. The Massive-Verse family crashes the scene in dramatic fashion. It’s a dynamic shift going into the closing chapter.

With all the chaos around them, the art constructs the sense of true world shattering dangers. Premier’s attack leaves nothing behind as it builds towards the final stand. A full page image crashes everything. This leads to a eye-catching image leading to the fallout.

At this stage, the art brings out the final reveal of the prized mantle holder. It is filled with deep rooted friendship and one elevating into a new path. The parting image is perfect for what it needs to be: a closing of one door and the endless possibilities of another.

The “Chicago Organized Workers League” or C.O.W.L. have survived due to the maneuvering of Geoffrey Warner (The Grey Raven). It has not be without strings attached. Dirty Dealings and murdering mobster Camden Stone tops a very seedy list. Two years after Stone’s death, Warner has big plans but sins of the past appear to be coming back to haunt.

Keeping his head above water has always been a trait of Geoffrey Warner. His dealings with Stone have now become public due to a possible witness to his crimes. The writing shows his calmness tested to hold onto control. This becomes apparent at the Unity Fund Gala. When other attendees start to gossip, Warner hits them with a defiant line before leaving the party. It is a perfect reflection of how he refuses to surrender an ounce of ground to get what he wants.

The other standout character in this chapter is Reginald Davis (Blaze). His conversation assessing Warner’s claims brings forth a sense of worry as their work might be crumbling down. Davis investigating the lone witness comes with confrontation on a few fronts. Aside form the action, the return of a certain character caps off more intrigue to the fate of one Geoffrey Warner.

Reis brings out the many sides of Warner throughout the issue. From the opening press conference, Warner is depicted as the typical politician. This quickly changes in the private meeting with Davis. The panels pour with the tension and urgency to handle the allegations.

It boils over to the Gala. The panels showcases the gossip and Warner’s response set the tone for the rest of the chapter. Skylancer’s encounter is filled with fast paced action. The pages are an easy connection to readers and their reward is a shocking conclusion. The closing act is capped off with a full page image that leaves no doubt that things will be forever changed for C.O.W.L.

The plans built by Geoffrey Warner start to crack at the seams with another excellent chapter for the sequel series. Strong writing from Higgins and Siegel tear away at Warner’s vision. For this entry, we are heading back to “Comics’ most exciting line”! With events such as “Supermassive 2024” and “The Catalyst War” on many readers’ pull lists, the MASSIVE VERSE strikes with an unlikely sequel.

In 2014, “C.O.W.L.” debuted from Image Comics. The series spotlighted “the Chicago Organized Workers League.” Its’ vision of superheroes branched off from the traditional themes. With dealing with a public with trust issues along with each other, the heroes’ escapades won over readers and critics alike.

Now 10 years later, the original creative team comes back to continue their story. It was also announced in May of 2024 that “C.O.W.L.” is officially apart of Black Market Narrative’s Massive-Verse. With a high profile and anticipation built, how does the latest arc begin a new legacy?

Within a few panels, Geoffrey Warner hooks readers into his ideal vision for “C.O.W.L.”. The bold ambition of talking C.O.W.L. to a national level doesn’t come without strings attached. Higgins and Siegel feature Warner as a cutthroat businessman. The manipulations used on a few (former) members react loudly to the depth he is willing to go. It is not one of a typical hero per say. One thing C.O.W.L. walks is the grey area of characters. This shined in the first series and returns just as strong for this arc.

The issue gives a fair share of action, but heavily goes in on building the drama. Once in its’ final act, there is some reveals that are locks to pay off big near the end. However, Warner continues to be the character with well-deserved attention. Readers will have much to talk about with a strong cliffhanger ending. This will deserve an immediate re-read with the layers to the overall picture unraveling.

Reis brings the 1960’s to the present with some amazing imagery. Warner’s early meetings convey the tense drive he has to push his agenda. With the simple mannerisms displayed, the art connects with the readers of how brazen Warner’s plans are. This leads right into an uncomfortable conversation with some other key players. Reis delivers on the reactions to sell the moment with no hesitation.

As previously mentions, there is a great action sequence later in the issue. Reis constructs the brutal encounter with a huge assist from Otsmane-Elhaou. With every attack, the lettering amplifies each panel. reader can’t help but be locked in until a full page image concludes the confrontation.

As the closing pages begin, the mood in the story shifts. It builds towards a shocking announcement to close with. Reis gives a perfect final image to send readers off to immediate begin places bets on where things go from here.

The return (and beginning) to the Massive-Verse’s past delivers on an incredible first chapter. Higgins and Siegel craft a script filled with deceptive maneuvering. Reis brings this multi-leveled story to life with exceptional art. Settle in for what is sure to be an incredible ride!

For this entry, it is time for a massive(verse) event! Since 2022, the world of Black Market Narrative has created a special event properly titled “SUPER-MASSIVE”. The event brings together members of Comics most exciting line in a one-shot adventure. However, this year, things are very different.

The Radiant Black game-changing event know as “The Catalyst War” has taken center stage. With the War’s conclusion poised for Radiant Black #30 and #30.5 respectively, many fans wondered how the rest of the universe would become involved. Their wait has been answered.

Juggling the events of the Catalyst War, the writing team doesn’t miss a beat with the adventure at hand. Seeing the dynamics of certain players match up proves for some great moments. Post-SM, readers will need a Rogue Sun-Shift extended team-up. One area which does not get overlooked is when characters “meet” for the first time. This makes for some poignant interactions as events move forward.

Having Shift step into the spotlight levees how uncertain things have become. His role takes the conflict into a dangerous territory. Seeing the conflict play out, the writing presents the big action moments that are accustomed to this line. The resolution plays into the uncertain elements of Catalyst. It leaves readers off on a high note as the Massive-Verse world faces its’ gravest challenge.

Simeone gives readers much to savor with the art. THE AERIAL SCENE! Capital letters is the only proper way to describe the full page insanity on display. This event feels larger than life. It sets a high pace for the rest of the book. Each character gets stand out panels that don’t get lost in the shuffle.

That said, the group shots elevate the story when presented. Once they come across the big “villain”, the catch phrase stand off will have readers amped to see what unfolds from here. Simeone crafts a sense of danger. heroics and tragedy with the big fight. Its’ fallout feels bittersweet as it sinks in what lies ahead. The closing image caps off what readers are expecting from the start: A Supermassive event that delivers. Mission accomplished.

With the Catalyst War unfolding, the Massive-Verse pillars enter the fray with an excellent adventure fitting of the title. Superb writing balances the personalities and pending fate magnificently. Simeone and Carey envision the electric feel of the devasting conflict with amazing artwork. Led by the “Who Is No One” podcast, the series has transcended traditional storytelling. This is nothing new for Kyle Higgins and the Black Market Narrative team. From QR codes, voting on who takes the Radiant Black mantle and more, they find ways to re-invent the creative wheel.

That said, the bar has been set very high for this series finale. Will readers finally get the answer to the lingering question: Who Is No/One?

At its’ core, “No/One” has unveiled many elements of truth and perception. The finale wastes little time ramping up the broken vision of Aaron Kern. Higgins and Buccellato delve into his madness flawlessly. The “Accountability Killer” comes across unhinged and egotistical. It plays into the deadly showdown he orchestrated. With every action tormenting his hostages, readers can’t help but become further invested. The vicious demeanor portrayed by arguably The Massive-verse’s best villain steals this chapter.

Just as readers sense they know what’s going on, Higgins and Buccellato prove they have more tricks up their sleeves. A major player finally crashes the scene and the pace rapidly moves. This builds towards a strong conclusion and greater fallout. With a series based on mystery and truths, the residents of Pittsburgh expose their range of feelings. Their mood is best defined by a quote: “How are any of us supposed to move on?” Powerful words to illustrate the hold Kern’s actions had on the city.

Even with this payoff, readers are treated to two well-placed moments before closing the chapter. As the theories start forming, Higgins and Buccellato give one last salvo of questions for the audience. With all the moving parts, this story couldn’t have been structured any better.

Since this series’ beginning, Borges and Englert have balanced the high tension landscape of Kern’s manipulations with brilliant action imagery. Rest assured, there was no falter for this ending. The final showdown is presented with a dire, intense half page panel. Julia Paige’s terrified reaction reflects the readers witnessing events.

Kern’s mayhem is enhanced with the disturbing actions he flaunts on his prisoners. The lettering of Otsmane-Elhaou takes these difficult moments to new levels. This all ushers into the wild battle between the issue’s main rivals. Borges goes for a three-panel look for this encounter and doesn’t miss. In its’ aftermath, the art conveys the sense of uncertainty of trying to recover and press onward. This leads into some very intriguing panels. It leaves a new sense of wonder for the future of Pittsburgh and its’ residents. The art team set an extremely high bar that is nothing but wins for the readers.

The Massive-Verse’s biggest mystery delivers an intense close with a masterful class in story-telling. Higgins and Buccellato’s writing weave a thrilling showdown with personal scars. Borges, Englert and Otsmane-Elhaou bring out the multi-layered themes of the “Accountability Killer” saga with phenomenal art. Added with the complementary podcast and No/One defines what an event should be.

For this entry, The game changing event that has seen both individuals bearing the mantle of RADIANT BLACK has now arrived at their pen-ultimate chapters. The main series has been split into two ongoing series. Each tells the side of Nathan and Marshall respectively.

RADIANT BLACK #29 & 29.5 by Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark, Eduardo Ferigato, Marcelo Costa, Raul Angulo, Rod Fernandez, and Becca Carey looks to pick up the pieces of loss for both heroes. Will it be enough to end the war?

Marshall's story delves into the themes of pain and loss. The writing shows the burden of choices. With every action he has taken, Marshall just can't find a way to have a good outcome. This becomes clearly evident as he makes a decision that alienates himself from allies. The thoughts of the greater good maybe noble but it is not without a cost.

The writing reflects the dire consequences of Marshall's call. The brooding tension with fellow radiants finally boils over. Its' resolution comes with grave results. Marshall becomes increasing frantic until his breaking point is hit. Pacing shows how this has been growing to the perfect crash point. Judging by where things lead now, the worst for Mr. Ward may be on the horizon.

29.5 shines the spotlight on Nathan's path. Much like Marshall, Nathan has had to make choices. However, the heroic nature seems to shine through more. Where Marshall seems more uncomfortable to what plays out, Nathan regroups quickly to dive for more answers.

When a certain Radiant makes his appearance, the story leans into more of a direct path for answers. Readers will be locked in as the War's end starts becoming clearer. The writing dictates Nathan's new grasp of what is transpiring. It gives the sense of here might be some possibility of winning, even if short lived. The closing act shows the definite difference between the radiants as a call is made. The chapter closes with a great ending that will set the show-stopping conclusion into overdrive next issues! Get ready.

Ferigato and Costa bring the best out of their chapters. Marshall's fragile state carries into his drastic choice. The action sequence flow with a high velocity. It's resolution gives one character a half page final moment. Readers won't even have time to react as the battle rages onward. Excellent closing full page panel to lead readers into the ending chapter.

As for Nathan, the coloring of Fernandez elevates a few panels to new heights. The key radiant entrance gets a two page splash with a donut shop stealing scenes. This is backed up by Nathan and Marshall flying through a trippy two page splash of their own. Seeing how they enter this chapter's end pages mirrors the ugliness of the conflict. The parting image sets the table for fans to feast on a showdown for the ages. There is much to praise both teams about.

FINAL POINT: 9.2 (#29 - 9, #29.5 - 9.4)

With the Pen-Ultimate chapters of the Massive-Verse's biggest event, there was a fair balance of emotions and action. Higgins and Clark weave into the decent of a breakdown with Marshall. This is balanced by the more heroic calm of Nathan once clues come to life. The art teams construct incredible imagery as the worlds of Nathan and Marshall speed towards an eventual collision of epic proportions.

Proposition 87 has passed. The law giving citizens the right to “preemptive self defense” has become a reality. This is in wake of the “Accountability Killer” case and No/One’s actions. A city has been pushed to the brink. Higgins and Buccellato push it over the edge. The writing reflects how broken the people are due to the haunting case at hand.

It also shows how dangerous this law has allowed people to become. Some of the situations are all too real in this day and age. Even someone like No/One can’t save the day here. Key supporting characters in the story such as Alanna Paige and Detective Harper have noteworthy sub-plots here. Taking a side tour to focus on Prop 87 only raise the stakes at who’s behind the chaos. Seeing where the final pages lead, the writing team has perfectly set the table for a show-stopping finale.

Borges and Englert have done fantastic work in this series but this time, they might have really outdone themselves. There are many highly sensitive scenarios played out with Prop 87 being law. The art will strike a chord with how intense and disturbing the citizens of Pittsburgh have become. It never lets the emotional weight rest as events progress forward.

In the chaos, there is a defining image of No/One standing over the madness in the streets. The full page splash exemplifies the horror of human nature. From here, the parting page connects who is behind all the drama. It is a lasting impression that will lock readers in for what’s to come.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

The pen-ultimate chapter of the great Massive-verse mystery leaves readers in the midst of chaos. Higgins and Buccellato construct a disturbing take on power and responsibility. Borges, Englert & Otsmane-Elhaou present strong imagery to reflect the dangerous landscape of the post Propostion 87 law. This is exceptional storytelling that fans simply can’t miss.
