STORM #2 by Murewa Ayodele, Lucas Werneck, Alex Guimaräes, and Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics). Mateus Manhanini - cover artist

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In two issues, Ayodele has connected Storm to the audience in such a distinct manner. Even when her world is crashing around her, Storm fights onward. One element that may throw some readers off is the post-Krakoa sentiments of the public.

Not everyone is accepting of mutants back on the public scene. Storm handles this like a true goddess. Through poise and grace, she raises herself above the comments below her.

The hospital sequence brings a more grounded approach to that dilemma. Storm's response is one that fits her character to a tee. Ensuring other mutants have no issues there is second nature to Storm.

The rest of the page is a race to get help. With the closing page, readers see a familiar face all too ready to help someone who always puts others first.

Wernick sends Storm directly into action with the opening pages. The pace speeds with every panel. There's a great missile dropkick followed by lightning strike sequence which will excite readers.

Her condition shoots to the lead with a strong visual of her blood on her sleeve. In the distance of a pig-headed captain and crew, the image lets readers know Storm is weakened but fighting.

The hospital moments are filled with a range of emotions. None more shocking than Storm realizing time is running out. In her journey, Storm gets a full page splash of "Oblivion Waits". This sub-plot continues to build in the background.

From here, events lead right to the closing image. Seeing who's hear to help greets readers will a full page image. It caps off a fast growing story with big ramifications for failure.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

This series has already set a high bar of how Ororo Munroe should be portrayed in comics (and beyond). Ayodele guides readers through the dire search for hope with his strong writing. Wernick, Guimaräes and Lanham construct the emotional pull through an unbreakable will with the art. This series continues to deliver on the buzz surrounding it!

It only slows down when Doom seizes a chance with a vibrant image. Even with a heroic shot of the survivors, happiness is short lived. The closing panel caps off what an anguished call Strange made and its’ upcoming repercussions will have.

Marvel’s Bloodiest event concludes on a solid yet predictable landing spot. MacKay’s writing centers the big action with an intriguing sub plot. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In the Impossible City, Blade has ascended. The former hero is the new lord of all vampires. He is having a conversation with a fallen hero. Black Panther is now a vampire under Blade’s rule. T’Challa has vastly changed. Giving his instructions, Blade’s conversation is over with him.

A voice speaks from the distance with an observation. Scarlet Witch lets the new lord know he has taken a loss. Wanda informs him more is coming via The Avengers.

Meanwhile on Earth, Miles Morales has transformed into a vampire. Dr. Strange intervenes and hits Miles with an attack. The blow knocks him back to his senses. Miles starts telling the Avengers, Dracula and Bloodline what he was forced to do.

In this mix, a truth is revealed that Bloodline cannot process. She has been recruited by Dracula for a sole purpose. Bloodline is the only one who can stop Blade…by killing him?!

Readers watch as the weight becomes too heavy for the young hunter. What transpires next sets forth a new path. As the darkness grows, one Avenger becomes the source of light needed to combat. Judging by the final image, is it all too late?

MacKay gives readers a break point sorley needed for the heroes. Since the beginning, Blade’s been cold and ruthless with each action. Bloodline’s reaction to events is a great counter to her father’s new persona. The writing hits the point of uncertainty and doubt about what she is being tasked to complete. It is a big moment, but another steals this issue.

An Avenger steps right into the spotlight with a speech that echoes any classic Hollywood movie. The words capture the fear and taxing pressure surrounding this fight. It leaves readers in a sense of rebellion. MacKay drops a solid counter with the final pages. The counter punch of Blade connects as this story feels far from over.

Larraz and Gracia convey the strength of the heroes in multiple areas. Scarlet Witch’s response to Blade is defiant. Readers will see her anger behind the impactful words. The moment of clarity with Bloodline is gifted a full page montage of Blade and the current state of affairs.

The Avenger spotlight starts with a near full page image. It is fitting considering what follows next. With anger and determination behind the expressions, readers can’t help but begin to think there’s a chance to win. The closing image is a full page introduction that closes events with a loud statement. There is much for readers to rave about with the art.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

An Avenger takes the spotlight by force with a turning point felt around the MCU. MacKay pens a balanced issue while the latter half elevates the chapter. Larraz, Gracia and Petit constrict the highly emotional reactions to Marvel’s bloody event with ease. The saga leaves with another big moment to exemplify why this is no ordinary story. It’s an event for a reason.

Elsewhere, Tigra and Hunter’s Moon are in search of one man who might be able to reverse all of this. However (even with the help of Miles Morales), it may be too little, too late. The astral form of Dr. Strange is still reeling from the attack from Blade. His human body? Another story.

BLOOD HUNT #2 by Jed MacKay, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia and Cory Petit (Marvel Entertainment) Cover: Kael Ngu

MacKay speeds up the pace to give fans a very heavy driven action chapter. The writing depicts Blade as over-confident as plans are moving. The pairing of Bloodline and Dracula provide a unique dynamic as the Bloodcoven arrives. From here, the action takes events up a few notches. Nothing is held back as the battle rages onward. The fallout leads into a natural direction. However, the closing moment is a genuine shock as readers will be guessing on what happens next.

MS. MARVEL: MUTANT MENACE #3 by Iman Vellani, Sabir Pirzada, Scott Godlewski, Erick Arciniega and Joe Caramagna (Marvel Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With the return of Red Dagger, Kamala’s life becomes more complicated. Throughout the seriousness of Orchis’ attack, the writing keeps things centered around young love and her dealing with her new status quo. The action comes into play quickly in the middle act. Vellani and Pirzada playing off the notion of the Five is a solid plot theme in describing the familiar faces that are popping up.

Seeing the true villain’s plans in motion is an easy connection for readers. With Kamala being involved in the Mutant issues of the current MCU, the notion of Orchis involvement helps. It brings Kamala in a closer connection to Mutant affairs. The closing page might have something to say about that as Kamala’s dream escape crashes back to reality.

The art by Godlewski and Arciniega reflects the ever optimistic title hero. Red Dagger’s introduction brings up images of youthful hope and romance. It serves to counter the heavier matter of the Mutant hunting going on. The introduction of “zombie” Cyclops is gifted a half page image. Seeing the X-Man in this state makes for a loud, positive visual. This builds up for more as the book progresses. Readers will have a big surprise waiting for them on the final page. it is one that should have more fans talking about what is unfolding here.

FINAL POINT: 8

BLOOD HUNT #1 by Jed MacKay, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia and Cory Petit (Credit: Marvel Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The saga begins with a few notable Marvel characters infused with the Darkforce. There is a countdown to “Sundeath” ticking away as readers watch the panels unfold. Events get graphic as a reveal is provided. The Sun has been killed. A voice narrates the shocking end. This has been someone’s plan all along….

Meanwhile, time shifts back fifteen minutes earlier to the SunDeath. Scarlet Witch is flying over a crowd. She sees Blackout. The villain has become ingulfed in dark energy. Iron Man informs her that more Darkforce characters are in the same situation. They have now become portals.

Hunter’s Moon and Tigra are assessing the Shroud becoming a portal. The time is now 25 minutes before SunDeath. As the pair starts piecing things together, they come to a quick conclusion. This is no accident. This is an ambush. A herd of Vampires fill the sky and presses forward towards them.

All over the world, Vampires are unleashing Hell on whoever comes across their paths. Neither Doctor Doom or Earth’s Mightiest Heroes can escape the invasion. There might be one person to make sense of it all: BLADE. Will he be enough to turn the tide?

Readers watch as the heroes come across a group ready to give them challenges. The Bloodcoven has arrived. Who will be left standing at the end of their confrontation?

Things get violent and graphic quickly. This leads to some shocking moments. none might be bigger than the closing page. A figure has made a choice. The consequences are deadly. Readers need to brace for impact as the event has already made some statements and it only just started.

BLOOD HUNT #1 by Jed MacKay, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia and Cory Petit (Credit: Marvel Entertainment) Cover - Peach Momoko

MacKay keeps fans guessing with the backwards working of the timeline in this chapter. The Sundeath countdown proves to be an effective plot point as the MCU crumbles. Seeing how the Avengers struggle right from the start speaks volumes of the threat.

The Bloodcoven is an eye-catching group. Their fury knows no bounds. Once they arrive, pacing speeds up to give the shocking fallout. MacKay doesn’t hold back on huge moments. The issue has much for fans to discuss. none might be greater than the final page. It is a bold ending to a very capturing story.

Larraz and Garcia unload the violence in the first salvo. The vampires are as ruthless as one would expect. They get a full page reveal as Hunter’s Moon and Tigra watch in fear . The imagery shows how even Doctor Doom needs to pause and adapt to their onslaught.

The brawl between the Avengers and The Bloodcoven leaves little on the cutting room floor. Following the full page reveal, graphic attacks are what fills the pages. It is intense fighting. Readers will have little time to process what they’ve seen as the final act unfolds. The closing full page will send shockwaves as the moment crushes fans before ending events for now.

FINAL POINT: 9

Marvel’s big crossover leaps heavy into violence and mystery with its’ debut chapter. MacKay guess readers on edge with fantastic storytelling. The art by Larraz, Garcia and Petit brings a distinct horror feel to the Marvel Universe. Brace yourself for some big events. This won’t be for the tame of heart as time goes on.

BLACK WIDOW AND HAWKEYE #2 by Stephanie Phillips, Paolo Villanelli, Mattia Iacono and Joe Sabino (Marvel Entertainment) Stephen Segovia & Jesus Aburtov (cover artists)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In two issues, Phillips has crafted an intense world of espionage. The pacing moves things right along while keeping readers locked in. The back and forth of Clint and Natasha breaks up the seriousness of actions nicely. The dynamic of Natasha's symbiote is a new factor that leads to some memorable sequences. It keeps building up suspense of what its' true motives are. Does it support the pair's friendship or does it want to eliminate Clint altogether?

The latter portion of the chapter dives very far back into their past. Seeing their bond form and still hold up to the present is a big win for fans. It also adds more danger to the actions and fallout that jeopardizes everything. Factor in some more surprises in the final moments and this series just keeps getting better and better.

The art reflects Clint and Natasha's solid foundation of their friendship. The slower moments in Madripoor give insight to their casual comfortability discussing events. This all changes with one quiet action. The near full page image speaks volumes. This leads to a wonderful full page full spread of Natasha in action. The fighting panels flow very smoothly until the resolution connects.

In these instances, the art locks in on Natasha's reactions and how she tries keeping things level until she gets a reaction. This leads into the final moments where a reveal is gifted with a full page foreshadowing. Once this portion revs up, it motors until the closing image. A full reveal of a character is constructed. This leaves readers much to ponder until the next chapter drops.

FINAL POINT: 8.7

Within two issues, the latest chapter in the lives of Clint Barton and Natasha Rominov spiral out of control. Led by Phillips superb writing, the action moves without remorse as the drama unfolds. The art team deliver on creating a world of danger amongst an emotional bond. You absolutely want to have this series on your radar.

The closing act brings everything to a thunderous close. The ending page leads readers to high expectations as this unit has only begun to fight and that’s a win for all comic readers.

THE SENTRY #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are witnessing the return (?) of one of Marvel Entertainment’s most polarizing characters. Bob Reynolds’ history in the MCU has been one shrouded in mystery. As one of the most powerful being, The Sentry has been been perceived as a complex individual.

Since being killed by Knull in the “King In Black” storyline, many had wondered if that was the last time readers would see the Golden Guardian. When unexplained events happen in present day, it appears we may have gotten our answer.

THE SENTRY #1 by Jason Loo, Luigi Zagaria, Arthur Helsi and Joe Caramagna bring forth the next phase of this enigmatic character. Let’s take a closer look and see how things unfold.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins with a familiar face working on her office. Jessica Jones is face-timing her husband while fixing her door. Luke Cage is now the mayor of New York City. The couple takes a small break from their respective tasks to catch up. Their conversation is cut short as Jones’ building starts to shake. Jones goes to investigate, since she can sneak by Wilson Fisk’s law banning vigilanties in NYC.

When Jones arrives at a building a few blocks away, she is shocked at what she finds. A whole side of an apartment complex is destroyed. Before she can dig further, Misty Knight and the Abberant Crime Division arrive to take over the case.

The tenants describe what they saw. Readers get the idea of a powerful energy blast destroying the building. This is on top of what appears to be someone saving the residents. Knight and Jones team-up to investigate. Their findings lead to the idea that The Sentry is back.

Who are Mallory Gibbs and Ryan Topper? What are their connection to Bob Reynolds? The mystery takes pause to soak in the information as it appears the dangerous hero might be back from beyond the grave. Readers witness what led to the incident in New York while learning this isn’t isolated. Prepare for an interesting tale that brings forth many questions and possibilities as to the Golden Guardian’s return to prominence in the Marvel Universe.

THE SENTRY #1 by Jason Loo, Luigi Zagaria, Arthur Helsi and Joe Caramagna (Credit : Marvel Entertainment - Cover: Salvador Larocca)

Loo crafts a solid mystery for fans to try solving with in this inaugural chapter. Seeing the story through Jones and Knight made for a different and successful approach. Knowing what the Sentry is capable of, Knight presses the issue of solving what she fears has happened. This causes pressure between her and Jones but makes for a combustible dynamic.

The story of Gibbs and Topper further dives the story into chaos. Each has their own moments to feature the impact of powers. It sets events in motion for another key battle soon. In the meantime, Loo makes an easy connection to readers for Gibbs. Through her own experiences, Gibbs becomes a character you want to root for as this series enters into dangerous ground.

Zagaria and Helsi balance out the emotions form this story with fear and excitement of the possibility of the Sentry’s return. The return of the hero picks up after Jones’s call with a big two-page spread of a destroyed building. Post that event, the art team processes the background of Gibbs as she makes her way through the hustle from NYC.

The rest of the issue dives further into the legacy of the Suitor. The art team presents one candidate in over their heads. Tying events back to the famous words of Ben Parker, the art makes no mistake spotlighting what goes wrong when power corrupts. The closing moments address one key factor of this story and sets up for a bigger conflict down the road.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Bob Reynolds is dead, Long live Bob Reynolds. The next chapter of the legacy of the Sentry begins with a striking return. Loo’s slow-building plot along with Zagaria’s stunning visuals allows ample time for the audience to connect to the events plying out. The mystery is only just beginning and this will be one not to miss on New Comic Book Day.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The year is 1944. The Location: Paris, France. A familiar face is taking fire from Nazi forces on the attack. Readers instantly recognize Dum Dum Duggan as he ducks for cover. A soldier gets the drop on him and prepares to shoot. Luckily for Duggan, someone else had a quicker draw. Nick Fury makes the save and he didn’t come alone. The legendary Howling Commandos are right behind!

With an enemy tank rolling towards them, Fury and company draw the plan up. Drawing fire, Fury gets pinned down after an explosion. With no chance to move, the tank turns its’ barrel towards him. It fires! However, luck has returned the favor and found him this time. Captain America blocks the blast with his shield!

Handling matters, Cap destroys the tank and gets the Commandos out of harms way. Regrouping at their medical tent, Cap and the team are informed of a plot know as “Wolfsschanze” or “Wolf’s Lair”. Fury is too banged up to lead so the Sentinel of Liberty is given the task to lead the unit on this highly dangerous mission.

What lies at the Wolf’s Lair? Something more sinister than they could comprehend! Cap and the team make their charge into the unknown. Readers quickly see that the good guys might have bitten off more than they can chew with what they find. When the final moments hit, the status quo between everyone is drastically changed. Things are only just starting but get ready for one hell of an adventure!

Just seeing Phillips’ name in the credits, readers knew this was going to be something special. After finishing the last page, there is no doubt about it. The opening act keeps things very grounded and fully captures the World War II period. Phillips also dives into the disconnect between Cap and the Commandos as things weren’t always great between them. Playing off the super-powers angle, the conversations reflect the distrust and anxiousness of the times.

The overall story ties in a touch of horror to the historical action parts. It’s a great twist to see the final act unfold because readers might forget: Superheroes were just debuting in this area. Anything of the supernatural sort is not common. The Commandos reactions play a big part in connecting that to the readers. The final act provides a solid cliffhanger to what is a smash debut issue.

When I mentioned about names in the credits, knowing what Magno can do with an action scene really made excited to see what he could do here. Right from the opening page, the panels mirror the hellish conditions of War. The panels are bold and dynamic. Readers can feel the danger of the battle beaming off the pages.

Magno and Grundetjern throw in some excellent half-page panels of Cap fighting that make a huge impact. These are somehow topped by a full page shot of Cap and the unit heading into battle. The art team perfectly caps (no pun intended) off the chapter will another great full-page shot that will be n reader’s minds until the next chapter drops.

FINAL POINT: 10 OUT OF 10

Taking one of the most intriguing versions of Captain America and crafting a fresh historic take around him is no easy task. Combine Phillips’ stellar writing with the electric artwork of Magno and the team and readers get swept up into an incredible story that can’t be denied on New Comic Book Day!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILERS WARNING ***

Since their initial formation, these Savage Avengers have brought the action and impacted quite a few time eras along the way. What started as Deathlok (real name: ***** *******) hunting down Conan The Barbarian has become a fateful encounter connecting Anti-Venom (Flash Thompson), Daredevil (Elektra), Weapon H (Clayton Cortez), Black Knight (Dane Whitman), Cloak & Dagger has spun into a visit through the Hyborian Age to now navigating thru the landscape of Nueva York 2099! The Hyborian saga had many amazing surprises that you should make sure you grab the TIME IS THE SHARPEST EDGE TPB and see for yourselves, but the 2099 story has just begun…

The team (minus Conan - see TPB) is now making their way thru the new timeline with an uneasy addition to the mix: Punisher 2099 (Jake Gallows). The mission has now shifted to taking the fight to a true evil figure no matter what timeline you see him in: ULTRON. In this time frame, Ultron has an army of Deathloks at his disposal. The Avengers make their move to fight and encounter another figure that could be a game changer in their quest: Victor Von Doom of 2099!

This issue opens up with a flashback to 2091. Ultron begins a takeover of Latervia but Doom is always ready to defend his country. Doom triggers a song to play which activates Latveria’s defenses. Readers fast-forward to 2099 and witness what is known as”The Iron Front” : Doombots versus Deathloks. The Savage Avengers escape in the Punisher’s ship and fly away while hearing Doom’s idea to stop Ultron. An artifact (a time-array gauntlet) might hold the key to stopping the future. The team balances out but having some personal conversations, none that will hit readers more than Anti-Venom and Deathlok.

The good times don’t last long as they are shot out of the sky by a Deathlok soldier. The impending crash sees Doom teleport away while the others deal with the aftermath of a surrounding army hot in pursuit. In a surprise move, Doom comes back to help the Avengers escape and ultimately arrive at their destination to acquire the time-array gauntlet, but are met with Ultron and his opposing force who has been letting the team lead him right to the weapon.

At this point, the issue really kicks into high gear with the action. Readers will NOT be ready for what unfolds next as the battle rages onward. There are no punches pulled. There are no breaks to catch a breath as the battle The situation takes a dramatic turn as the Avengers throw everything they have at Ultron. How does the team fare? Trust me when I say: NO ONE is expecting what happens in the final act. No One. Readers - get ready for a mind blowing conclusion to this issue.

Pepose pulls out all the stops for this issue. Pacing set events up spectacularly to drive home the key moments. Adding DOOM to this highly combustible team made for some very memorable sequences. Doom’s “rescuing” of the team after the crash was perfectly capped off with vintage Doom Dialogue acting as everyone “should be grateful” for his help. Overall, The dynamic between members has been very enjoyable to see grow. The scene between Anti-Venom and Deathlok hit all the high marks and gave a bit of time to catch a minute from all the action. Heading into the final act, readers will be caught off-guard and will have some big surprise moments. The final scenes will have readers locked and loaded to see what happens next without question.

Magno brings the blockbuster action that has become a staple for this series. Even the smallest conflict has the “big fight feel” added to the dialogue. The opening full page spread explaining the “Iron Front” set the tone early for the rest of the issue. Even the quieter panels had huge emotion to them. None greater than the Anti-Venom/Deathlok sequence. The remaining battle scenes were bold, loud and direct, which fully complemented Pepose’s dialogue. The final page of this book established the looming jeopardy ahead and will have readers speculating how this will all play out.
