STORM #4 by Murewa Ayodele, Lucas Werneck, Alex Guimarâes, and Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ayodele continues to push Munroe into new heights with this series. Throwing DOOM into the mix provides unique banter. Both characters are royalty in the MCU. Their dynamic is as combustible as one may think. Doom carries a sense of arrogance as he tries discussing plans. Munroe stands her ground and delivers back. This leads to a choice with dire consequences.

The writing ties ack to the dealing of Brother Vooddo. Its’ payoff throws a monster curve into the mix. All the while, Ayodele slides in some heartbreaking moments before the close. The writing with the “flashback” moments are a big win. Nothing will prepare readers for the ending. The final pages shatter any preconceived notions. Events end with a loud exclamation point heading into next issue.

Wenrick and Guimarâes never let reader escape the regal flare on display. Storm arriving for her dinner gets a fantastic full page image. The expressions she and Doom duel with only add more tension as the night progresses. It is offset with DOOM forcing a hand to be played. The result vasty speeds up the pages.

Once the deal is broken, a shocking action is taken. The art depicts the fading life in the panel set-up. It is countered with an incredible afterlife sequence. This completes with a fitting full page image. Once here, the closing pages change everything readers know thus far. Get ready to be WOW’ed by the images here.

FINAL POINT: 9.3

The Mutant world crashes into the regal landscape with a stellar issue. Ayodele’s writing keeps raising the nobility and possibilities in Storm. RESURGENCE: BLOODSHOT by Fred Van Lente, Rodrigo Rocha, Leo Lujan, Brushu Studio, Ludwig Olimba and Ezequiel Inverni (valiant comics/ Alien Books - cover: Fernando Baldo)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

For longtime Valiant readers, there will be much to enjoy with this throwdown. If you are new to Valiant, they always lead off with a great “new readers” page. Instantly, you’re caught up to speed just enough to join the story. For this issue, the back story for Bloodshot is longer. There is a purpose for this. Once the fight gets started, there’s more of a connection to feel what he’s fighting for.

The conflict becomes very violent in a hurry. Knowing both heroes, this delivers on may fronts. Van Lente pens a strategic match in between the broken bones. Literally. Both characters utilize their abilities to their max. Only then do readers start seeing the personalities come out. Bloodshot comes off very brash to the reserved Rai. It’s a reflection of both strengths. As the combat marches on, it eventually hits a breaking point. One plays for keeps and executes a unique move for victory The fallout plays into a solid conclusion for now but not forever.

The art never shies away from the brutality of the fight. It only delays the inevitable with the opening pages. Taking readers into a longer look at Bloodshot’s drive cements why he does as he does. It doesn’t take long to shift gears into the main event.

The fight begins with an artist switch-up. Lujan spares no expense on presenting a vicious showdown. It is one not for the weak of stomach. The panels reflect the desperation for each fighter’s cause. It eventually leads to some unique spots. Seeing Bloodshot react in most scenes covers a wide ground base. It leads to a near half page conclusion image. Events may be over for now but the art deems there will be more to come.

FINAL POINT: 7.8

The billing of “Soldier vs Samurai” lives up to the marquee in this Resurgence spin-off. Van Lente pens a brutal throwdown centered on noble causes. The art holds nothing back as two unstoppable forces unleash Hell on the other. This is a fight that will have readers wanting one more round.

Let’s take a closer look at what is happening now!

G.I. JOE #3 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson delivers a very direct shot of action with this chapter. The team is still reeling from the loss of Rock N’ Roll. Cobra is asserting their dominance with every action. Readers watch as Clutch is behind enemy lines. This leads into a birds eye view of how dangerous they have become. Cobra Commander’s treatment of a spy will clear any doubts of the terror he is bringing.

This is very different from the wounded Joes. Williamson creates a good amount of friction with their latest member. Risk and Duke come to an uneasy interaction. The fallout spins into a new start for the broken team. It leads into a high paced closing act. Fans will be amped up for who crashes the party in the final page. This is as vintage G.I. Joe as it gets!

Reilly and Bellaire start things off with a strong two page spread of Cobra. Seeing how the partnership of Destro and Cobra Commander play out pops off the panel. The art doesn’t shy away from the ruthless nature of the commander. Readers watch the bloody resolution of a spy in their midst. It is a direct shot of fear sent to the readers.

In contrast, The fighting between Duke and Risk is frantic and emotion driven. This is capped off with a perfectly placed arm-bar attempt. With recent events, tensions have been building. Each panel leans into the toll that has been taken. It also moves events along to the next desperate attempt to rebound. The final act is filled with an adrenaline shot of excitement. Each panel feels fast paced. This comes to a crashing halt with the reveal on the parting page. Fans will have a tough time waiting until next round to see what happens next.

FINAL POINT: 9

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #35 by Mark Waid, Adrián Gutiérrez, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid takes readers into the depths with this latest installment. Adding Aquaman into the mix provides a fun dynamic. The banter between him and Robin keeps things light-hearted until its’ time to spring into action. Once here, things change drastically. The outbreak of a virus causes havoc. It also pushes various parties to the brink of war.

Lori Lemaris and King Ronal have conflicting views of more heroes involved. Waid plays off the history of Lemaris and Superman very well. It even draws out a smile from Batman. The good feelings don’t last for long. Readers watch as there is more unravelling taking place. Once the play is made, the World’s finest is on their defensive. It also puts Aquaman into a crossfire. The orchestrated attack seems to have a surprising mastermind behind it. Judging by the last page, fans are in for a very wild ride.

Gutiérrez and Bonvillain bring an exciting vision of the seven seas to life. The opening full page shot of Poseidonis and Tritionis gives a small insight to the larger issue later on. Seeing how the virus is infecting connects with readers. It’s a vast contrast form the peaceful moments with Aquaman and the other heroes. The art gives a calmer picture before heading head first into conflict.

Once underwater, the action sequences start to take off. This leads to a reunion of Superman and Lemaris. The reactions of the characters display tells of an underlying issue in wait. Ronal’s disdain for Superman is clearly evident. This plays into their conflict later in the chapter. Aquaman doesn’t escape the anger either. The people of his kingdom unite in a striking group shot (which pops due to Wands lettering). Pacing moves things right along as the conclusion hit. The last page reveals a shocking figure via full page spread. It will definitely catch readers for a loop. Leave it to the creative team to end things on such an exclamation point.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The World’s Finest plunge into danger with their latest tale. Waid’s writing sets up a multi-layered front. Gutiérrez, Bonvillain and Wands construct a strong vision of conflicts under the sea. This will be one for fans to check out.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #3 (DC COMICS)

Renee Montoya’s latest case is a doozie. As the new security on the JL watchtower, Montoya seeks answers. Kenn Kawa is left for dead. The evidence points to Batwoman. With the past personal relationship weighing in, Is Montoya’s judgement clouded? There’s little time to process as the Eradicator has entered the field. This problem might be more than The Question can possibly answer.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #3 (DC COMICS) by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Willie Schubert continues to expose the attack on the Justice League’s home turf.

Let’s take a closer look at the latest installment.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #3 (DC COMICS) by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Willie Schubert

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Segura puts Montoya into a very unforeseen scenario. The case has spiraled into a more complex situation. Kawa being the intended target remains a mystery why. As she goes through her findings, Montoya is forced into some confrontations. The tense reunion with Batwoman proves to create a difficult path for answers. The writing never lets the tension escape until a situation forces a pivot.

With the Eradicator involved, readers watch as Montoya amps up her efforts. The methods she evokes are driven by rage. Pacing has done a great job in slowly building this reaction up. Once Montoya unloads, it makes a statement. This blinds her to what is really going on. In the shadows, moves are being made. This is very familiar in set-up. The responsible party is anything but predictable. Once the mastermind behind all of this is revealed, this moves Montoya’s efforts into a dire corner. Rest assured, the last page will lock in readers for the next chapter.

Tormey and Fajardo Jr. break down recent events nicely within the first few pages. This leads into a full page image of Montoya’s reluctant partner on the case. Coloring works perfectly on the attack of Ted Kord. The use of shadows connects with readers as the mastermind is slowly revealed.

It’s a big contrast to Montoya questioning The Eradicator. The art depicts the emotional release that’s been growing in Montoya. Eradicator’s reactions only prompt more out of the The Question. It is a scene that steals what’s happening in the background. Once the main attack begins, the mood shifts. Montoya’s reactions reflect the shocking turn of events. The panel structure raises the moments before the final page. Once there, a full page image hits as business has picked up for Montoya’s search for truth on the watchtower.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Lurking in the shadows is an unlikely truth in The Question’s latest case. Segura’s writing delves into the toll taken on Montoya while the mastermind makes their debut. Tormey, Fajardo Jr. and Schubert bring on the bad guys with strong imagery. Brace for the last page’s impact!

A mysterious figure is looking for the Book of Oa. Can Hal Jordan and company stop the Sorrow before it’s too late?

Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest space odyssey.

GREEN LANTERN: FRACTURED SPECTRUM #1 by Jeremy Adams, V. Ken Marion, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Dave Sharpe (DC Comics) Cover: Fernando Blanco

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams gives readers a straight forward build coming out of a huge event. Considering all the Corps have been through with Thaaros, the mood is promising. Sorrow’s opening segment contrasts that completely. It heightens what’s forthcoming. Seeing Hal Jordan smiling and enjoying his time sets a fun pace heading into the chapter.

Seeing the corps working together is another solid moment. Kilowog’s return is already a fan-favorite event. The foreshadowing of more gives a quick diversion before the celebrations begin. Adams really gives the Lanterns a sense of repurpose. This ultimately gets disrupted by a certain party crasher. At the stage, pacing picks. up. The conflict is short lived but leaves its’ mark. Its’ fallout unveils a new thread into the Lantern mythos. This becomes a rallying point setting the course for the next big event. All in all, the writing is very solid for this lead in.

Marion and Fajardo Jr. give The Sorrow a full page splash to kick this book off. The interactions with the librarian waste no time setting an uneasy mood. It is a big contrast to Jordan in space. Each panel shows how he “found his smile again”. This leads into a great page of the Lanterns reuniting for Oa’s battery. Jessica Cruz holding court shows promise of what’s to come until Sorrow hits the scene.

Opening with a full page brawl with Guy Gardner, the latest threat makes a big impact with readers. The only downside is the conflict is brief. This leads into a striking page featuring Gardner confessing to a secret. It catapults events into the closing image. Readers will be excited to see the last panel. The image sets the tone for what lies ahead for the reunited squad.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The next phase of the Green Lantern legacy starts on a strong note. Adams’ writing delivers on constructing the drama with memorable moments. Marion, Fajardo Jr. and Sharpe present a united front bracing for a dark challenge ahead. Readers should expect big things from this latest arc.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening now!

ACTION COMICS #1082 by John Ridley, Inaki Miranda, Ceci de la Cruz and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS) Cover: Gleb Melnikov

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ridley throws a unique conflict into the traditional superhero theme. Major Disaster was a reformed villain. When a bank heist goes wrong, it unhinges Superman. Readers watch as the Man of Steel arrives to find a quick surrendering Disaster. The complexity of this move weighs on Clark Kent. It winds up challenging him on a new level.

As the confrontation reoccurs, Kent is stumped as to what has happened. The writing leads to a talk with Lois Lane. Seeing the couple break down what happened is a solid moment. It lends itself to question Superman’s impact. Ridley pens this as a question of faith in oneself. This is a whole new side to Superman. The result is a scramble for answers. It’s disrupted in the close. Seeing where things are left off, readers know there is more to this than a change of heart.

Miranda and De La Cruz build the calm before the storm. once events launch, Superman enters via a two page splash. The art closes in on Superman’s reaction to a lost light. It sends him into a controlled rage. This stands out on the panels. Events here conclude via a full page transition. One point poised to fight, split to a surrender.

The fallout lead to a personal talk between Lois and Clark. The guilt Clark carries is felt in each panel. Lois counters with grounded support. The couple has been through much over the years. Readers sense something is off but nothing out of the ordinary. Once events head towards the end, a surprise is thrown in. The last page provides a few questions before wrapping up shop on this new adventure.

FINAL POINT: 8.2

Superman has a question of influence in this new story arc. Ridley’s writing challenges the Man of Steel’s impact on others. Miranda, De La Cruz and Sharpe blend superhero themes in with ever mounting drama for a solid chapter. Where this heads now is anyone’s guess.

MILESTONE UNIVERSE: THE SHADOW CABINET #3 by Joseph Illidge, Denys Cowan, Darryl Banks, Atagun Ilhan, & Chris Sotomayor (MILESTONE MEDIA/DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Illidge brings the heroes of the Milestone Universe to the brink. Rocket has been a one-woman crusader through this ordeal. Within the opening pages, she has to process what Angela Alva has started. This leads her into a final stand that will either make or break the universe. The writing is very straight-forward. Readers easily know that the stakes have never been higher. It is complimented by Static’s change of stance. With the deck stacked against them, there is a glimmer of hope left.

This is all due to Angela Alva. After capturing Hardware, Alva unloads her secrets in celebration. The Alva family history is tragic and unapologetic. Readers watch as Angela has been forged through pain and a yearning to belong. Even in victory, the writing also shows how she has lost. Angela’s crowning achievement backfires. This leads into a long overdue return. With the conflict escalating, the final pieces are put in place to face off. Pacing moves events right along to a solid parting spot before its’ conclusion next chapter. Readers should expect a big ending for next issue.

The art showcases how troubling things have become. Rocket’s opening sequence displays her uncertainty as things fall apart. This matches Static’s decision after meeting with his family. The moment jumps off the pages as Virgil Hawkins wears his heart on his sleeve. Readers can sense the “big fight feel” approaching with his closing panel image.

Angela Alva’s story takes up a good portion of the book. The panels primarily use a 9 panel se-up. This hones in on her family history as well as her own journey. Readers watch as the end result leaves a new figure in place via full page image. Pacing picks up pages as events start spinning towards the finish. The initial heavyweight bout is packing action. It is a monumental showdown that is poised to a strong finish. The book closes with back to back full page images. Readers have a strong lead-in towards the epic conclusion.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

The secrets of the Alva family set into the spotlight of the Shadow Cabinet’s pen-ultimate chapter. Illidge delivers Angela’s story with strong writing. The art constructs a multitude of emotions as the final showdown begins. This will be a tough wait for the finale.

THE NEW GODS #2 (DC COMICS)

What is a life worth to a god? High-Father has given Orion a deadly mission. A young child has emerged with powers. The elder of New Genesis has deemed him a threat. Orders are simple. The mission carries a heavy burden on Orion. This leads him to enlisting Mr. Miracle for “help”. How this web has spun….

The New Gods #2 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Jesse Lonergan, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano continues Jack Kirby’s cosmic characters into their latest adventure.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the moral burden at hand.

The New Gods #2 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Jesse Lonergan, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano (DC COMICS) COVER: Nimit Malavia

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Even in his absence, Darkseid still IS, Ram V. orchestrates quite the power vacuum with Apokolips in peril. The writing walks readers through the treacherous landscape. High-Father is shaken to his core. Desaad is in denial. On Earth, it is more grounded around the mysterious child. There are many vested parties interested. This includes a familiar face of Jack Kirby’s world joining the fray. Even with the new and old faces, one pair stands head and shoulders above all else for this tale.

Mr. Miracle and Big Barda have been the early breakout characters of this series. Seeing how Scott Free deals with being drawn into this issue provides a unique perspective. The letter he leaves for Barda is jam packed with emotion. Ram V’s writing here floods the pages with the self guilt and frustration of his task. The result leads into a fitting and strong conclusion. It offers a bright spot in comparison to the final act. With a haunting lead, the beginning of the end starts in an unlikely place.

Lonergan starts the chapter with a brief intro for Karok. The imagery reflects the dark overtones this character exudes. Led by a strong two-page splash, readers can connect as to the danger level this new player brings. From here, Cagle takes over for the remainder of the book. The visions of High-Father take on a whole new gravity. Each panel carries the dooming feel of loss. This carries into the Mr. Miracle portion of the chapter.

The struggles in dealing with his issue take center stage. Readers watch the letter come to life as Free tries to prepare. Orion is in contrast as he lets his aggression fly. It breaks the somber feel and leads to a bold near-full page. Backed by Napolitano’s lettering, Big Barda crashes Free’s self doubt. There are many reactions to how the couple plays this. It’s an easy win for readers before the brooding feel covers the remaining characters. The art makes each sub-plot sand out right to the last panels. There is no question events are just getting started on a very high level.

FINAL POINT: 9.1

The race against time becomes center stage for Scott Free in the second installment of Kirby’s Fourth World revival. Ram V. pens a deeply seeded emotional chapter. Cagle, Segala and Napolitano piece together the fear of today with the promise of tomorrow. Many moving points are in motion that only spell win for the readers.

UNCANNY X-MEN #8 (MARVEL COMICS)

A rescue mission has gone awry. Two X-Men teams have returned to their former manor. In its’ place stands a mutant prison. Jubilee, Calico and Beast have been captured by Dr. Correa Ellis. Rogue and Gambit’s squad have broken inside. What they find might be what does them all in. Let’s not forget waiting in the wings is one Charles Xavier.

UNCANNY X-MEN #8 by Gail Simone, Javier Garrón, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles concludes the “Raid On Greymalkin” saga

It’s time to take a closer look at this conclusion!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone throws a few new looks into this twisting tale. Scurvy comes across as a sympathetic pawn to Ellis. Handling both X teams is quite the introduction feat. Readers watch as a polarizing figure emerges to fight back. It is one that is met with mixed reactions. Xavier’s role gives balance and a few wrinkles into the fight. It covers up the true main event: Rogue vs. Cyclops.

Both X leaders have vast ideologies of how to handle events. Simone has written Rogue as the embodiment of the original dream since the beginning. That never slows down in the conclusion. Even after the conflict is “settled”, Rogue’s emotions flow with the rage and heroics of the true X leader. Its’ resolution feels more of a pause instead of an end. Readers may have differing opinions on the conclusion but one universal statement. Without question, we are in the Rogue era and that is a huge win for readers.

Garron steps in for art duties for this chapter. The book kicks into gear with an excellent two page title splash. It’s always a catching visual to see the title woven into the action. The art team gives readers another great striking image. The full page face off of Scurvy vs. Xavier starts the main event.

The tensions also boil over between Rogue and Cyclops. Emotions take over for powers as the two start letting loose. It ultimately rolls into a big two page spread of the teams poised to end events. As the story rolls into the close, panels switch gears. The mission’s outcome takes center stage. There is enough bad blood between both squads. Judging the finals panels, one round has ended but another is poised to be set off.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The X-Men’s raid comes to a grinding halt in its’ closing chapter. Simone’s writing exposes the old wounds too grave to overcome. The art juggles the team’s conflict to the stalling end. Knowing “X-Manhunt” is looming in the future, the Raid leaves readers with much to ponder until then.

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #2 (DC COMICS)

A Killer loose in Gotham. This is no ordinary rogue by any means. The Wound Man strikes during the early stages of Batman’s career. Underneath the grotesque appearance lies an even greater mystery. Can Batman solve the case before the body count grows higher?

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #2 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic continues its initial case as the spotlight is thrown on the World’s Greatest Detective.

Let’s take a closer look at what is happening now!

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #2 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters continues to layer the mystery with some notable points. The initial lead begins with Batman laying out his plan. This takes readers along as his investigation proves to be correct. However, that is when things take a turn for the worse. Arguably the strongest point of this series is Batman’s inexperience. He isn’t a polished product. One costly guess sways the story into a new direction.

Playing off the cards dealt, Batman must trust an unlikely source. Readers watch as the suspicions play out to a surprise twist. Events also lead Batman into a new environment in search of answers. It is refreshing to see the detailed detective work come to the forefront. In its wake is a more puzzling ending. Considering the uncertainty of the Wound Man, seeing the last page play out fits the narrative of the case. There is never a dull moment with this story.

Sherman and Farrell begin events with a near full page of Batman and Gordon. The mood seems tense under the Bat Signal backdrop. It gives a very vintage feel as Batman begins his investigation. The full page images of Batman watching the suspect will win fans over.

The fight between the Wound Man and Batman moves swiftly. It gives readers a very unlikely image in its’ conclusion. Seeing Batman legitimately scared of what happened will get people talking. This moment causes a domino effect with the pages. Pacing speeds up to a very unique panel of Batman’s “thoughts”. Readers watch as the panels grow bolder with Batman searching for answers. The story concludes with a page changing gears as the mid way point is hit. Panels have a very stylistic look throughout this issue right to the end. there’s much to enjoy with the art.

FINAL POINT: 9.2

The case of the Wound Man takes a few turns in its’ second chapter. Watters keeps readers guessing with the writing. Sherman, Farrell and Cvetkovic mash up classic images with the horror unfolding. There’s something for everyone with this dark tale of the past.

THE BLOOD BROTHERS MOTHER #3 (DSTLRY)

In old Texas, life is unforgiving. A preacher’s family is destroyed by bandits. The patriarch is dead. His widow is now taken by the remorseless grifters. Only their three young boys are left standing. With nothing left, they embark on a dangerous revenge quest. What they find along the way will make them grow up quick or become a forgotten memory of the wild west.

THE BLOOD BROTHERS MOTHER #3 by Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Risso, and Jared K. Fletcher continues their western thriller.

Let’s see how this finale birngs the house down!

THE BLOOD BROTHERS MOTHER #3 by Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Risso, and Jared K. Fletcher (DSTLRY)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The saga of Daniel, Simon and “Jack Rabbit” Blood has taken many turns since their journey began. Azzarello weaves the boys through the grind with the treacherous landscape tying to swallow them up. This is a well-structured Western. For this issue, the writing takes them into the heart of the drama with great results.

As the boys come across the mysterious Mad Owl, their luck begins to turn. The moments with Owl and Jack gives a sense of connection as both have dealt with loss. This pushes all parties into their search for vengeance. With the boys being very naive, one bad call causes the paths to split. This leads into a new dynamic for the parentless family.

All the while, more is revealed involving their “mother” Anna. The connection with Carter Cain becomes more cloudy as her situation starts to spill over. Once Ed Percy comes into play, the whole dynamic shifts. The writing hones in on the overwhelming stakes at hand. It never escapes readers with the tension rising each page. Once the resolution becomes clear, pacing slows down to focus on a bittersweet close. It hits readers with a strong gut punch as a choice is made that changes everything. The ending is fitting as it ties up some ends while leaving the audience with much to ponder.

Risso presents the dangers of the west with phenomenal visuals. The sequence with Mad Owl caps off with a strong two page image. It sets a haunting impression as the brothers push forward. The watercolors add so much to this scene and book. Risso plays into changing direction with how the pallet changes.

A prime example of this is when Carter meets with his uncle. The darker panels not only reflect the night but the brooding tone he carries. It is also seen when the brothers travel in daylight. Purple is the coloring over them as the bright fields shine around them. Risso makes the characters pop out of the panels when needed. Flecther’s lettering rises to the occasion as the gunfire takes off.

The art covers the range of emotions in this book. Readers never lose sight of the uneasiness of the West. This plays into the closing pages. As a choice is made, the panels capture the sadness around the narration. It leaves the chapter with a heartbreaking pause until we see these characters again.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

In this installment of the gritty western drama, choices become deadly. Azzarello’s writing never lets readers escape the harsh reality of revenge. Risso’s art is a magnificent compliment to the tough road ahead for the family shattered. Excellent storytelling.

THE LUCKY DEVILS #1 by Charles Soule, Ryan Browne, Kevin Knipstein, and Christopher Crank (Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Soule pens a deceptive start to this struggle of good and evil. Taking two of the purest souls and attempting to corrupt can be tricky. The writing connects easily with the audience. Both Cam and Starr come from ordinary lives. The pair strives for more but seem to fall flat. Enter in the “devils on the shoulders” and the story begins to speed forward.

Coller and Rake push their vision onto readers. Soule plays into the human emotions while crafting the set-up. The writing is relatable to secure the theme just enough. It sparks an emotional reaction. Can power corrupt good people? The result lays a swerving foundation. Leave it to Soule to make a compelling case for the Devils. The closing act puts the cards onto the table. Just when you think you know the set-up, Soule pulls one more surprise before catapulting forward. How lucky are we to read it!

Browne and Knipstein walk readers through Cam and Starr’s mundane lives. The art shows how the good ones can’t catch a break. From Cam’s botched date to Starr’s “shortcomings”, readers watch as they are put through Life’s grind. Browne’s attention to detail is second to none. There are many fun moments until the Devils crash the party.

Both are introduced with full page images. The split style of pages and panels work to tell each story. Each character and devil get equal time to build their case. There is no confusion on the offer being dangled to both. This all merges with a striking full split image. The formula is continued right to the close. Once here, readers watch the endgame come to life. A knockout two page splash wraps up events for now but readers will be clamoring for more soon.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

“The Road through Hell is paved with good intentions”. This becomes the ultimate test of good vs. evil in this new series. Soule’s writing plays both sides to make a captivating tale. Browne, Knipstein and Crank bring the intensity and insanity of a devilish vision to life. Get ready for a wild ride!

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #4 (DC COMICS)

To survive in Gotham City, you either break or become something more. Bruce Wayne has chosen to adapt. What has emerged is a feared destructive force for justice. The path of vengeance is vastly different than what fans are accustomed to. In this Absolute era, expect the unexpected.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #4 by Scott Snyder, Gabriel Hernández Walta (Phantom Road), Frank Martin and Clayton Cowles takes readers further into the origin of a very different Dark Knight.

Let’s have a closer look at what is happening now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder takes this chapter into two areas. The flashback sequences take readers into a simpler time with the Waynes. Dialogue is one of optimism as young Brice tries to impress his dad. Readers watch as their backstory comes to light. Focusing on the choices only makes the tragic future more impactful. This is perfectly capped off with a courtroom outburst. There is no denying the rage and pain being unleashed. What it ultimately creates is a man looking to deal with his own trauma.

This portion dives heavily into a “Year One” phase. Snyder paces events out evenly. Readers watch a try and fail timeline as Batman evolves. There are some nods to his previous origin but nothing feels replicated. The writing walks the audience through this growth. There are moments focusing on Wayne’s drive to be better. It all leads into a debut of the finished product. This leads into a surprising ending. Judging by the last page, there is more pain about to surface as the Bat continues to spread his wings.

Walta steps in for art duties on this chapter. The opening flashback pours with emotion with a young Wayne in court. The close-ups reveal the anger built by his father’s loss. Gears shift into a closer present with a Batman in action. There’s no shortage of brutality as Batman attacks. Walta’s attention to detail is big in this moment. Seeing claws and fangs appear shows the humble beginnings. The coloring keeps a grim atmosphere. This leads seeing how Bruce grows into the Bat. Readers watch as the young man takes out his pain on criminals in style.

Batman’s attack on a gun-running shipment is classic Dark Knight. Walta’s art leads the quick pace into a violent end. Martin’s use of red amplifies the conflict. It leads into more personal moments as Bruce deals with what he is becoming. Once at this stage, the Batman’s first “real” mission is gifted a strong full page image. Events come back full circle with the closing page. In a few panels, the drama sets in as a confrontation for the ages begins. Fans better be ready for what is coming next. There’s no slowing down from here.

FINAL POINT: 9.7

The tragic beginnings of the Dark Knight come into the light with this chapter. Snyder pens an emotionally driven issue with strong writing. Walta, Martin and Cowles keep a brooding sense to panels as the evolution from Man to Bat begins. High level storytelling at its’ finest.

AQUAMAN #1 (DC COMICS)

HAIL TO THE KING! Arthur Curry has been a major player in the DCU for decades. The legacy he has left is immeasurable. Founding member of the JLA. Ruler of Atlantis. King of the Seven Seas. Curry has even made a successful transition into pop culture with two hit Hollywood movies leading the way.

It is only fitting that the King returns to the Comic shops as a part of the “All In Initiative”.

AQUAMAN #1 by Jeremy Adams, John Timms, Rex Lokus and Dave Sharpe begins a new chapter of Curry’s legacy!

Let’s take a deeper dive into the hero’s next phase.

AQUAMAN #1 by Jeremy Adams, John Timms, Rex Lokus and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In dealing with Aquaman, there is a sense of caution as to how to present him. Pop culture has had a notion of him being “The Fish Talking Guy”, nothing more. Adams literally wastes zero time to present him as the true powerful hero he is. The opening struggles to save a crashing plane hits all the marks. It comes off a quick recap for new readers before launching into the present struggles of the King.

Adams showcases him yearning for more. The daily royal duties are mundane. With a hint of danger, Curry lights up. It reflects the message driven home to readers. There is more to this character than they have seen. With a mysterious threat attacking, Curry heads into action. This spins into a shocking twist. It sets the stage for an even greater mystery. In only a few pages, the new stat quo will have readers buzzing.

Timms and Lokus kick things off with a great opening recap page. It hints enough for new readers to get a sense of the King. There’s no slowing down from here with a gorgeous two page splash. Instantly, the threat is front and center with Aquaman ready. The plane rescue is fueled with a super heroic flare.

Atlantis shines with the regal overtones. The art makes it stand out while balancing Curry’s boredom. Being King comes responsibilities that don’t excite. Luckily fans don’t suffer through that. The panels drive home the chaotic scene with an incredible full page shot. Pacing flows very smoothly as the build spirals into the great twists. Curry’s reaction connect the uncertainty. It all leads into a strong closing panel which sets sail onto a dangerous future.

FINAL POINT: 10

Atlantis’s ruler is back on his throne & bringing the action with this debut chapter. Adams writing shatters any preconceived notions of the hero being one-dimensional. Timms, Lokus and Shapre never stop escalating the drama with the art. Long Live the King!

JSA #3 (DC COMICS)

Hawkman is in Hell. After being impaled last issue, the fierce warrior is not in good shape. He joins the rest of the Justice Society Of America. After getting attacked by the Injustice Society, the team is on the ropes. The younger generation of the long standing DCU team is faced with another issue: adapt or fall.

JSA #3 by Jeff Lemire, Diego Olortegui, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) seeks to answer if the team is “All in” or All out of Luck.

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now.

JSA #3 by Jeff Lemire, Diego Olortegui, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) Cover: Cully Hammer

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lemire plays into the strengths of Hawkman for this chapter. The brash anger never escapes readers as his deals with his set-backs. Pacing keeps events moving right along. This helps with such an ensemble cast. Even as his story takes off, the other side plots get a fair share of time.

The Infinity Inc. portion gets a well timed pay-off set in issue #1. At their current state of question, the “traitor” is revealed. The bad guys plan is all going according to plan. Once a young hero finds some confidence, tides turns. This is as vintage JSA as it gets. This is also what makes it a great win as well. The close throws in an unlikely surprise. How this plays out is up in the air, but readers will enjoy the path there.

Olortegui and Guerrero dive into the emotions of the heroes for this chapter. Hawkman’s rage as he’s captured pours on each panel. Jade dealing with her team’s losses showcases a different side. The traitor reveal is brief but hits its mark.

Once the main battle starts, the issue picks up in action. A near full page image turns the course of direction. Its fallout sends the heroes into a new place. This eventually launches into the closing pages. Readers watch as an unlikely ally appears in Hawkman’s darkest hour. The art provides a fun backdrop into the classic tropes on display.

FINAL POINT: 8

Hawkman’s darkest hour arrives but not without possible help. Lemire’s writing brings out the best of the classic team. Olortegui, Guerrero and Wands dive into the pure emotion of conflict for an entertaining tale. How can you not be a fan of what is happening here!

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE ATOM PROJECT #1 (DC COMICS)

Even in defeat, Amanda Waller claims a small victory. Super powers were stolen. Some didn’t return to their proper hosts after “Absolute Power”. The Justice League has reformed. Two members have an idea to possibly resolve this issue. Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi aka The Atom (respectively) might have solved this dilemma. However, some are not so inclined to be on board with this initiative.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE ATOM PROJECT #1 by Ryan Parrott, John Ridley, Mike Perkins, Adriano Lucas and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS) takes readers along for the ride to right Waller’s wrongs.

Let’s take a closer look at what unfolds here.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE ATOM PROJECT #1 by Ryan Parrott, John Ridley, Mike Perkins, Adriano Lucas and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This story has a very interesting concept at its’ core. Knowing what Waller’s actions have done, there are still lingering effects to be had on the DCU. Pitting Palmer and Choi as the main protagonists is a big win. Their partnership provides many scientific aspects with the occasional one-liners mixed it. It provides a solid counter to Nathaniel Adam aka Captain Atom.

Adam’s stance leads into a few directions. The time jump leaves many questions as to what’s happened. Being the first issue, there is plenty of groundwork to be set. Readers get a hefty fill of build-up on the project. Knowing the writers previous work, its safe to say there will be a solid pay-off. Judging by the final page, the fireworks look to be lit and ready to pop. There is a great deal of promise to be had here.

Perkins and Lucas start events off with a manhunt. It’s capped off with a great one page image of Palmer crashing the scene. From here, the time jump back is built via a two page spread. The Atoms at work showcases their skills to new readers. Once back at the watchtower, Palmer and Choi’s reactions to their research creep out.

This is countered by Adam’s reluctant compliance to assist. The panels indicate he’s not fully on-board. A full page image of him being worked on Justifies his body language. Readers watch as the wear builds to the closing act. There’s little action scattered into the close. It provides a good lead into the final page. A full image of a hero on the run sends this tale forward into the unknown. Without question, there is much left to witness unfold in this story.

FINAL POINT: 7.5

In wake of “Absolute Power”, two heroes challenge the events fallout. The writing focuses on a detailed build without revealing too much. Perkins, Lucas, and Abbott construct the tension along with the search for answers. There’s enough here to bring readers into the chase for powers.

BATMAN #156 (DC COMICS)

James Gordon is framed for murder. The Riddler is about to acquire Wayne Industries. Lurking in the shadows is the Court Of Owls. Gotham City is living on the edge of chaos. Can Batman weather the storm to save the day?

BATMAN #156 by Chip Zdarsky, Tony S. Daniel, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS) brings a whirlwind of excitement with its latest installment!

Let’s not wait another second and dive into the drama!

BATMAN #156 by Chip Zdarsky, Tony S. Daniel, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS) - Cover: Jorge Jimenez

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With two issues left, Zdarksy is leaving it all on the table with this story. Juggling multiple heavyweight rogues is a task. The writing pulls it off with ease and excitement. Riddler comes across as the psychotic genius that he is best as. The battle of wits between him and Batman is as classic as it gets. Its’ resolution provides a very unique twist to an already heavily layered issue.

Zdarsky also gives Jim Gordon’s tale a fitting end as well. Making him a very grey character in his arc worked immensely. Readers have seen a very different side of the last good cop in Gotham. His arc ends with a heroic stand, even if he hasn’t been 100% noble. This all circles back to Batman in the end. As more clues come into focus, Zdarsky drops one more bombshell before ending his long run with a sure-fire bang!

Daniel steps in for Jimenez on art duties. Events escalate quickly as Commander Star stands tall via a mid page panel. Batman and Gordon fight their way through the police to stop Riddler. The electric panels pop with action. Daniel flips the tempo with Riddler and Kull. Readers watch as Riddler’s ego fuels his insanity. There are vintage deathtraps pitting Batman’s knowledge against the odds. None greater than the realization of who is pulls the strings.

Gordon’s resolution comes with a heavy burden. The art reflects the pain his actions cause. This becomes the fuel for his assault on Riddler. After being in a morally neutral spot, Gordon demonstrates the hero aspects many associate him with. One moment will jump at fans before the close kicks off. With events ramped up, the final image delivers a shocking reveal before leading into the finale.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

Zdarsky heads into the finale of his run with an incredible set-up. The writing keeps readers locked in with action and surprises. Daniel, Morey and Cowles ramp up the intensity with each panel. Expect nothing but fireworks with this story’s conclusion!

Let’s take a closer look at the X-Man’s latest tale!

CABLE: LOVE & CHROME #1 by David Pepose, Mike Henderson, Arif Prianto, and Joe Sabino (MARVEL COMICS) Cover - Ian Churchill

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Within mere moments, Pepose makes it seem that he’s written Cable for years. The writing displays Summers’ gritty drive to win at all costs. It never escapes readers that Summers is there for a mission. The encounter with Cicada keeps skyrocketing the danger to a solid finish. It’s a great segway to hitting the major plot to the futuristic tale.

Salvation Bay provides an edgy background as Cable finds a unique ally. Avery deals with the same deadly virus. The dialogue lowers Cable’s guard long enough to show a different side. Seeing someone else going through his trials provides an unlikely connection. The writing slowly peels back the tough exterior. What is left is a more “normal” reaction rarely shown. This evolves into Cable inheriting Avery’s fight. It doesn’t take long for the action to ramp back up.

Once the smoke clears, the closing moments hit. Pepose sets the stage for a future uncertain for all the right reasons.

Henderson and Prianto hit readers early with the post-apocalyptic energy. The vehicle which Cable is pinned to sets the tone for the issue. It’s a creative near full image that fires off the action in style. The scene is matched by another strong full page image of Cable taking control. This pace carries through the pages of the initial conflict.

Once Avery makes her debut, the one shifts down to a more grounded level. The art reflects two soldiers easing their guard over common ground. Readers watch as Cable leaves his gruff guard to become open to another virus victim. This becomes short lived due to an attack. The new pairing (literally) jump into action via a full page shot. Cable’s reactions during the battle show a rare sight: smiling. This energy leads into the finish. The final pages show the major players put into position for a devasting conflict in the making.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The X-Men’s time-travelling titan crashes into comic shops with a thrilling debut. Pepose balances the fast paced fighting with the building drama with a phenomenal set-up. Henderson, Prianto, and Sabino bring the pain with extreme action while teasing the danger yet to come. This is one you won’t want to timeslip and miss!

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #3 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In dealing with Krypton’s fall, trying to reinvent the wheel can be difficult. Arron swoops in to throw readers a definitive new look. Six years prior, Kal-El being a “struggling” student creates a new perspective on his future. This only gets amplified by the society class of the Els. Being considered low-level workers, the writing eludes to more discovery behind the truth.

The family bond turns out to be their biggest strengths. Whether it’s Kal’s reassurance about school to the levels to defend each other, Arron hits readers in all the emotions. This only grows stronger when the planet starts dying around them. Pacing speeds into the fear of what Jor-El has been preparing for. It leads to a strong reveal of plans, even if the hour glass keeps sinking. The closing portion throws another curve into the mix. It is one that should have a larger impact as the Man of Tomorrow escapes the memories of the past.

Sandoval and Arreola bring a heartwarming vision of Krypton to readers in the initial act. A big two page spread shows the family on an escape from society. The art ensnares the emotions as a young Kal gets support on choices he makes. The good mood switches very sharply as Krypton’s sickness grows.

Within a two page splash, the deadly corruption grows louder. Readers watch as the all too familiar green images grow on the pages. This leads into a drastic time for the young boy. Watching his father get taken into custody is a tough moment. The panels rebound into big action. It is capped off by a full page image of a new symbol of hope. Events speed forward into another full page reveal. Knowing where things are heading, it only adds to the final page’s mystery.
