LIFE #3 (DSTLRY MEDIA)

Bobby Prost. The “Casanova Killer” Cory James. Retired Thief on a last score. Serial Killer serving a sentance unlike anything ever seen before. Their worlds collided in an unlikely way. Prost’s latest heist is on an uninhabited planet or so he thought. James is serving his hellish sentence with others looking for a way out.

With Bobby out of commission due to a poisoned axe attack, it’s now up to Jax to finish the heist. James and the rest of the inhabitants aren’t willing to go away so nicely. What breaks first?

LIFE #3 by Brian Azzarello , Stephanie Phillips , Danijel Zezelj , Lee Loughridge and Jared K. Fletcher continues the flip-style saga of “Pros” and “Cons”.

Let’s take a closer look at where things rank now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Azzarello and Phillips kick off events with a bold statement. The handling of Dr. Webb aka Reverend Bygrave by Jax is fitting and unapologetic. It leads into more intrigue as the Dr/Reverend offers a key solution that is too good to pass up. The writing never sways from the unsavoriness of the characters. It always keeps them in a grey area for readers to watch with one exception.

Even when Kennedy talks with the Reverend, the mood never gives readers a sense of good vs. evil. Pacing keeps everything in check until the closing panel. Who’s waiting there changes everything as the heist continues.

As for the “Con” section, the spotlight is solely on James’ scheming to escape. The writing shows his anxiousness and frustration to events unfolding. James is one that is tough break, knowing what levels he will go to for his own personal gains. Readers watch as he has become a person of interest to a notable party. This becomes overshadowed but the closing act. A flashback sequence unveils a lost home. It leaves readers questioning the thought of escaping to a place that clearly no longer exists. This is a perfect way to close on a very thought-provoking issue.

Zezelj and Loughridge bring out the most of the dire surroundings with the art. The altercation with Jax and Reverend is as direct and violent as the reasons behind it. There is nothing but rage in Jax as atacks. This leads into more reactions from the heist team as they start processing where they are now. It flows until the dramatic close. A close-up now enters a new player into their game of theft.

“Con” kicks off with an intense two page splash. The inhabitants of the planet are attacking with no mercy. Readers watch as they aggressively push forward. James’ play for a bargining chip shows the emotional wear of trying to escape. His facial expressions tell a story all its’ own.

The reveal of the interested party in James is a quick win with fans due to Loughridge’s work. As impressive as that is, nothing compares to the final pages. The visions of an apocalyptic world screams at readers as the chapter comes to a close. Tensions rise as the mid way point of the story is met with the downhill stretch forthcoming.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

The third installment of the sci-fi crime saga hits a new level heading to the midway mark. The superb writing throws the spotlight on Jax and James’s plans to escape at all costs with everything. Zezelj and Loughridge bring the insanity and fading hope to the forefront with the strong imagery. Both “Pros” and “Cons” segments will have readers buzzing after the closing pages. Rest assured, the home stretch will be one for the ages with this series.

TRANSFORMERS #14 (SKYBOUND ENTETTAINMENT/IMAGE COMICS)

The quest for power fuels and faults most Decepticons. Starscream is the perfect example of power corrupted. In his blind journey to rule, he has been ousted by Soundwave. His robotic body broken. Left for dead, the mind races. How did the feared Transformer get to this point? Is there any hope in his future?

TRANSFORMERS #14 by Daniel Warren Johnson, Jason Howard, Mike Spicer, and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) concludes the dive into the mind of a broken warrior.

Let’s take a closer look at how things shape up now.

TRANSFORMERS #14 by Daniel Warren Johnson, Jason Howard, Mike Spicer, and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

A scorpion can’t help itself with its actions. It’s just its’ nature. Starscream is blinded by his obsession for power. Even in his broken state, the writing never lets this theme escape the readers. The uneasy alliance between Horton’s crew and Starscream is based on lies. Both are trying to use the other for their goals. One is well-versed in this aspect and flourishes as the story progresses.

The flashbacks to Megatron and Cybertron showcase the last sense of morals die inside the robotic body. Events lead into a new location but a few predictable directions. It comes across very solid as Starscream’s genuine arrogance flosses over the set-up. The closing act leaves nothing to chance as the true nature of evil emerges. It is a fitting conclusion for where the next phase of Starscream is heading.

Howard caps off art duties with some strong visuals. Seeing the new form of Starscream is debuted with a two page splash. The art sneaks in a few humorous panels (involving a cat) before stepping back into the drama.

The flashback moments bring Starscream full circle as readers watch his complete turn. The full page image of him and Megatron unleashing their terror won’t escape readers. It tips off the audience about what’s coming. Watching the long work play out answers many thoughts as the road to redemption beings. The parting image closes the door of the past while opening up a more dangerous one for the future.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The journey into a deadly Decepticon’s path of redemption closes on a solid note. Johnson slow builds the drama with the writing. Howard, Spicer and Wooton brings the misleading nature of a broken soul to life with the images. The Energon Universe had better brace for the unforgiving evil forthcoming.

ARCBOUND #1 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

Actors and comics is a familiar and growing relationship. In recent years, fans have seen “BRZRKR” & “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return” as success stories of this pairing. At New York Comic Con 2023, word was breaking about another project following in these footsteps. The actor involved is no stranger to the land of comic content. Fans have seen him portray Eddie Brock aka VENOM in 3 successful films.

Paired with an all-star creative team, TOM HARDY’s comic venture has been building to a fever pitch. In November 2024, the wait is finally over.

ARCBOUND #1 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics) launches a 12-part sci-fi epic story.

Let’s take a closer look to see how things play out!

ARCBOUND #1 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman, Frank William and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Paired with writing heavyweights like Snyder and Tieri, Hardy couldn’t walk into a better situation for an opening chapter. Kai comes across as a soldier torn between ethics. On one hand his missions have all been for expanding Zynitec’s mission of acquiring Kronium. It’s countered by the feeling of senseless death and conflict. He is clearly given many layers for fans to fully encompass his issues.

Xander (his younger partner) is sold on a thrill of conflict. The writing reflects his lust for the battle. This theme carries through the majority of the issue. Kai’s internal struggles set off a domino effect of events. None greater than the final pages. At this stage, readers watch as the struggle for what’s right overtakes one of them. This leads to a shocking close. The status quo is ever evolving and for Kai’s future, this leads to new perspectives. It’s a solid building point with many miles to progress forward.

Smallman and William spare no expense detailing the high cost of war. The opening conflict launches readers into action with a near full page spread. Once Warr is introduced, the violence is amplified to new heights. It is not one for the squeamish. His ruthless attacks are blood soaked panels with Beaudoin’s lettering adding to the intense images.

Events calm with Kai’s thought process getting orders. The flashback sequences tease his past while dodging the ever challenges of following orders. Kyra’s interactions add to a more “human” sense in the sci-fi tale. It’s short lived as the back end of the book is nothing but the dark side of war. The art team squeezes in a few shocking moments with extra details added. It leads to a full page shocking panel to end events with. Suffice to say, the art team gave fans a knockout blow before bowing out on the debut chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

“Arcbound” brings intense action wrapped around a growing question of humanity. The team of Snyder, Tieri and Hardy delve into a solider’s conflict with fantatsic writing. Smallman, William and Beaudoin craft brutal conflicts with human emotions. It’s a great start for a long journey ahead.

GREEN LANTERN #17 (DC COMICS)

In space, someone can hear you scream. Lord Premier Thaaros has evolved into something more dangerous. Hal Jordan and John Stewart escaped danger in a race to OA. With the United Planets in pursuit, the fight for freedom isn’t coming without a cost.

GREEN LANTERN #17 by Jeremy Adams, Xermánico, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS) blazes a trail of excitement in space!

Let’s take a closer look at what is unfolding now!

GREEN LANTERN #17 by Jeremy Adams, Xermánico, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams juggles many characters without skipping a beat. Coming off the heels of the Civil Corps special, Jordan and Stewart are sinking fast. The writing reflects the immediate danger they are in and trying to prevent. Making a beloved Lantern into the main antagonist proves to amp up the stakes as things progress. Their story emulates the “never surrender” themes both bring to the table.

Meanwhile, a few side plots get much needed time to grow. Thaaros and Guy Garnder’s moments come across magnified to the overall tale. This is especially true with Thaaros’ new upgrade. Longtime readers of GL will appreciate the callback.

Speaking of familiar faces, one stands out as the surprise star of the issue. Knowing the stakes, the writing allows a reluctant hero to jump into the spotlight. It causes an uneasy alliance that will only grow more combustible as time goes on. This leads into a shocking close. With more surprises in tow, Adams wraps events off on quite the cliffhanger. There’s no way fans can’t be counting down the days till next time after this chapter.

Xermánico and Fajardo Jr. grants Thaaros a huge entrance into this chapter. The full page image leaves no question on his upgrade. It’s quickly upset by the breaking action involving Guy Gardner and company. The panels move brisky to indicate the quick action. This leads into a Lantern pair’s escape from doom.

A series of two page splashes shows Mogo in hot pursuit of Jordan and Stewart. It is an easy hit with readers. The art also invites the surprise hero into the fold. This elevated the conflicts end as each image created the true notion of a major event taking place. Readers are left with another full page image moving events onto the next chapter with ease. Things are only skyrocketing form here.

FINAL POINT: 9.2

The fight against the United Planets steps it up for a strong chapter. Adams crafts the big implications around the growing action. Xermánico and Fajardo Jr. construct a series of two page splashes that drop quite the exclamation point on a fast rising event! There’s much to enjoy with this one!

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #2 (DC COMICS)

The Gotham City you know no longer exists. In its’ wake is a whole new battleground for a bold dark knight. Bruce Wayne is not a rich playboy. He is a man with a new direction in serving justice. Evil has struck in a violent fashion. Now, it’s time for the Bat to strike back!

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #2 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles leads readers into the unpredictable world of chaos and choice.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest chapter.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #2 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder keeps readers on the edge with a Batman who is anything but predictable. The manner in which he handles the threat of the Party Animals is a more intense approach. Hitting the unstable army with a chemical onslaught is unapologetic in delivery. The fallout carries into his straight forward attempt to stop the Black Mask. It leads into a thunderous closing sequence.

This builds off the book’s strongest points: the character changes in the supporting cast. The dynamic between Wayne and Alfred is uneasy but offers a solid exchange. It is not the surreal “card game” seen earlier in the chapter. Readers will do a few double takes as seeing Bruce hang out with his “friends” feels different but mirrors the new stat quo.

Even with changes, Snyder’s writing brings out the classic Bat overtones like no one else. It leaves a massive impression as where things lead now is wide open. The only certainty is the imaginative take wins another round in its’ growing legacy.

Dragotta and Martin pull no punches with Batman’s fighting. The altercation at the Aquarium intensifies with each panel. How Batman uses his cape continues to steal panels. Readers will be impressed with a half page image that showcases the Bat watching overhead. This gets quickly upstaged by a skyscraper becoming a warning to the city. Its a fantastic panel that reflects the new stat quo of Bruce Wayne.

In-between the action, the more subtle moments of Bruce’s life win over readers. The card game carries a more light feel (even though business is brought up). The story doesn’t take long to get back to the full throttle action. In the closing events, a full page image of an iconic mobile takes an all new twist catapulting readers into the story’s next phase.

FINAL POINT: 9.7

Two issues in and the world of Bruce Wayne has never been more complex and explosive. Snyder’s writing shifts gears to bringing the detective side of business into the forefront. Dragotta and Martin leave no questions as Batman’s quest for vengeance grows with each panel. The new landscape continues to lock readers in for the long haul.

G.I. JOE #1 (SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT.IMAGE COMICS)

A Legacy reborn. An elite fighting force has returned. With a history crossing overing into pop culture via live action and animation, G.I. JOE has entertained fans for decades. In its’ latest comic incarnation, it is one-third of a new trinity. Along with Void Rivals and Transformers, G.I. Joe centers the Energon Universe of Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics.

G.I. JOE #1 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) kicks off a brand new chapter in the legendary fandom!

Let’s not wait any longer and finally yell “YO JOE!”

G.I. JOE #1 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Talk about making a statement! Williamson gives both new and seasoned readers much to rave about with this chapter. The opening segment works to establish the initial team as they enter this new era. Using Duke as a narrator gives a unique perspective as to how he sees each member. The result instantly connects with the audience. In comparison, the COBRA introduction is more subtle and gives just enough to understand their motivations.

One character that looks to play a much bigger role is Risk. The brief welcome leaves quite the impression. Once that is completed, the pace picks up with no looking back. Williamson hits the gas as the action bolsters into high gear. The closing act brings out the best and worst of an inexperienced team. Stakes have been raised and just wait for what unfolds on the final page! It is a hell of a mic drop.

Reilly and Bellaire steps back into the Joe world after an incredible run on DUKE. The team welcomes readers with a two page splash. From here, members get introduced with present and past panels. The flashback sequences pop with Bellaire’s coloring throughout the issue. It delivers on some insight and reminisce on the past series.

Once panels shift to COBRA, the mood changes. The brooding evil slowly emerges. It caps off with a near full page image of the Commander testing a new weapon. Closing that moment is a smaller but impactful panel of the Commander celebrating. The art team also welcomes Risk into the fold with a great action packed portion of the book.

The calm before the storm is greeted with a fantastic two page spread of Duke and Destro. This launches into the final act. No punches (or shots) are pulled as the intensity ramps back up. There are many incredible action images to have readers excited. Events conclude with a show stopping final page that throws everything in flux. The full page image is sure to keep fans on edge until the next chapter drops guaranteed!

FINAL POINT: 10

Mission accomplished. With its’ debut EU chapter, G.I. Joe delivers on every aspect fans could want. Williamson’s phenomenal writing weaves in the action and drama with ease. Reilly, Bellaire and Wooton construct some of the most high-octane action images in recent memory. Wherever your fandom starts, this issue will exceed your expectations (and its’ only the first issue)!

BATGIRL #1 (DC COMICS)

Cassandra Cain. Daughter of Lady Shiva and David Cain. Child of the House of The Bat. A walking weapon finding her own path. Cain’s journey into self-identity has gone through many levels. Now once again assuming the mantle of Batgirl, Cain is poised for a fight. Her ally in this conflict will test her limits. Can she weather the storm lying in wait?

BATGIRL #1 by Tate Brombal, Takeshi Miyazawa, Mike Spicer and Tom Napolitano (DC COMICS) kicks off an all new, action packed adventure.

Let’s take a closer look at how events launch.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Brombal focuses the conflict on the strained family relationship moreso than the actual fight. Shiva and Cain have a very complex history. The writing pushes this into the spotlight. Their uneasiness creates more tension as the attacks play out. Seeing Cain’s reluctancy to trust Shiva allows readers to watch every move with heightened worry.

The story escalates at a very high pace. There is plenty of action to tide over readers. It becomes the main driver as Shiva keeps Cain questioning her motives. Even when there are small breaks in the action, the story doesn’t take long to ramp it back up. The final page sets off events for an explosive turn of events as Cassandra Cain braces for the storm forthcoming.

Miyazawa and Spicer deliver on fast-paced action. The opening stand-off page sets the tone for the forthcoming fighting. With an incredible two-page splash, events are set off. Another two-page spread shows off Cain and Shiva handling the assassins. Readers will be amped for the kinetic strikes at hand.

The art captures the mistrust and strain in mother and daughter. Shiva’s coldness plays off the masked Cain in body language. It is a contrast in communication, but connects with the audience. This builds towards a haunting final image. The full page image speaks volumes as the fight rages on for mother and daughter.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

Cassandra Cain strikes back at the LCS with a solid debut issue. Brombal balances family drama with fast fighting in the writing. Miyazawa and Spicer bring out the best of the deadly warriors with the strong imagery. This is one to keep an eye on as the “All In” movement moves forward.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #0 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Erica Slaughter. The complex monster hunter has always been a magnet for trouble. Even in her early days, Slaughter has had a shroud of mystery haunting her. Before moving on from the battle with Cutter, there has been a focus to look at her past.

With the 5 year anniversary of the “Slaughterverse” at hand, a prequel is very fitting. It allows for a key change in direction to form. A new player entering the deadly game. Who is this imposing figure and what do they want with Erica?

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #0 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) takes readers back to right before the Archer’s Peak mission.

Let’s not wait any longer & see where things lead now.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #0 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Even with a prequel, nobody has mastered the craft of “slow burn drama” like James Tynion IV. A simple case morphs into an introduction for a debuting threat. The conversation between Sarah and Victor brings forth many avenues for drama. Sarah’s recap of events plays into the foundation of Erica’s drive. It is capped off by a subtle panel of Sarah hugging Erica. At this moment, readers watch as Erica lets her guard down just enough to be “normal”. It’s a side rarely seen. Readers watch a break in her armor form but not for too long.

Pacing keeps the emotions running high all chapter. The remainder of the hunt plays into familiar territory. Erica handles her business before getting the call for the next case. Once the attention is back on Sarah and Victor, Tynion finally dishes a cold response to Sarah’s impactful support of Erica. The fallout drops a big reveal as readers find themselves wrapped up in the chaotic landscape of the Order of St. George. With a superb cliffhanger, the sins of the past might find their way into the present timeline. Can Erica hope t survive? Only time will tell.

Dell’edera and Muerto continue to balance the build and create exciting panels for this special issue. The flashback sequences pop right off the page. With Muerto’s excellent coloring, the scenes come across as warm and feature Erica in a new sense. The full page image of Erica hugging Sarah is an easy connect with readers.

It plays off the multi panel pages of Victor and Sarah recapping. The art paints him as a charismatic being looking for details. With each page, readers can feel the tension building around Victor. These moments are briefly overshadowed by a two page conclusion to the flashback. The “feel good” moment is short lived as Victor comes to the end of this questions. His response speaks volumes of his character. With the final two pages, it becomes crystal clear of how imposing he will become in the present. The use of shading in the closing panel sells readers on what lies ahead as year 6 begins for the Boom! Studios franchise.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

The prequel mission before Archer’s Peak hits many emotions as SIKTC delivers another fantastic read. Tynion’s slow burn writing keeps readers locked in wy before the last pages. Dell’edera and Muerto provide the backdrops for an initial hunt which leaves many questions in its’ wake. Brace for the forthcoming impact. SIKTC is back in a big way!

JSA #1 (DC COMICS)

Legends. It is a word that gets thrown around quite often. Few times does the word encompass what it’s attached to. In the case of DC’s first superhero team, that is the only way to describe them. Alan Scott. Jay Garrick. Ted Grant. Definitions of true timeless heroics.

The Justice Society of America have been fighting the good fight since the days of World War II. Since then, the team has adapted through the years without loosing itself in beliefs. It has also encompassed a family sense with many legacy heroes filling in the ranks. How does the team fare now in the new stat quo of “All In”?

JSA #1 by Jeff Lemire, Diego Olortegui, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) looks to provide those answers in much more with its’ re-entry into the DCU.

Let’s take a closer look at how this legendary team fares!

JSA #1 by Jeff Lemire, Diego Olortegui, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lemire takes the team to task with the latest installment. At its’ core, the heroic ethics of the team remain unchanged by the eras they fight in. With the fallout of Amanda Waller’s actions in “Absolute Power”, they appear to be the most challenged. This new perspective is clearly seen in the writing of Obsidian.

The hero’s overly aggressive nature is a stark contrast from the team’s more grounded nature. It provides opposition to Jade. Her leadership as the new chair is questioned. The fight to stay true to form proves to be a difficult task. Other members are split on where they side. Where the elder members would handle this quickly, the younger generation are filled with emotional outbursts.

Readers do see a quick glimpse of the veteran lineup but they have their hands filled with a true threat. This doesn’t stop Lemire from throwing in a big swerve with the close. Readers watch as the final page drops a strong cliffhanger for the classic team to conquer.

Olortegui and Guerrero catch readers up to speed with a quick synopsis of the team with the opening pages. A near pull page image showcases the original lineup in action. Once the story swings into present day, Obsidian demonstrates his powers with a big two page splash. This sets the tone for the emotional wear the team carries. Adapting to the current hostile state proves to be a stronger adversary than realized.

The classic team gets in the action with a few key panels. Readers watched as the heroes fall into familiar territory with the action, A two page splash involving Dr. Fate amps up the danger before returning to present. Events conclude with a full page panel that will have fans excited to see what happens next. This is JSA storytelling 101.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The new era of the JSA is hit with an ethical onslaught in this debut chapter. Lemire’s writing poses a rift in the ideals of heroics for the classic team. Olortegui and Guerrero construct the vintage feel associated with the legendary team. Readers will want to make a point to see how things play out from here.

BATMAN #154 (DC COMICS)

Mayor Nakano is dead. One of Gotham’s “Good Guys” is murdered. In an unlawful city, there’s many suspects and motives. The Dark Knight is all too familiar with this scenario. Will he be ready for what he finds as he hunts for the killer?

BATMAN #154 by Chip Zdarsky, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS) dives further into this mysterious case.

Let’s take a closer look at where events stand now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Zdarsky shows off Batman’s detective skills as he starts his investigation. The mounting friction he has with the GCPD led by Vandal Savage is undeniable. It carries the uneasiness of this new stat quo. Batman has at least one ally he can trust: Commissioner Gordon. Seeing the two work the case never shies away from that vintage partnership established many years ago.

The case throws many notable Batman rogues into the mix. It leads to Batman trying to keep composure with a swayed public. With the “Villains” running the city, Bruce Wayne struggles for control. The writing never falters on raising the tense emotions surrounding the case. This leads to a show-stopping closing act. Zdarsky throws one hell of a twist to conclude events for now. It will leave readers curious about how things will ever be the same again.

Di Giandomenico steps in for art duties (Morey remained on colors) and wastes little time with the drama flare. The investigation amps up Batman’s intensity as he starts forming his plan. Riddler’s dinner party opens with a great “wine glass” panel perspective. It spirals into a series of action as Batman has to fight more than just the bad guys.

Wayne’s reaction to reveals also plays a key part due to the art. The strain of how the case is out of reach boils over. This leads into a near riot in front of a medical clinic. Seeing the anger pour out of Bruce (not Batman) makes a statement. The art’s intensity hits its’ apex with the final pages. As panels reveal a shocking truth, the closing panel will have readers floored to what they have just witnessed. Brace for a monster reaction with this issue.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

The murder of Mayor Nakano takes a startling shift in the latest Batman chapter. Zdarsky keeps readers on their toes with great twists in the writing. Di Giandomenico and Tormey construct the brooding dark view of Gotham City with the art. Expect some major fallout stemming from these pages.

Let’s see where this new chapter begins for Superman!

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #1 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Aaron digs into Superman being the symbol more than the man for this opening chapter. The backstory of Krypton paints a very distinct notion. Being considered lower class forges the house of El. The writing has set them up as the common citizen rather than the elite of the planet’s society. It reflects how Superman is seen in many eyes. They both represent Truth, Justice and a better tomorrow.

Once events shift back to Earth, the story beigns to move swiftly. Aaron sets up Kal-El as a hero questioning his actions. The uncertainty of his motives adds to an already complex character. Once danger strikes the small Brazilian town he is in, the true hero readers know comes out. The writing debuts Superman in a grand way. The only downside is it is short lived, but with good reason. Other characters crash the party flipping everything on its’ axis. It leads to a teasing close as a new era has launched without question.

Sandoval and Arreola depicts Krypton as a soul crushing environment pending the status. The Els are shown to be making their best efforts to survive the looming odds. A two page spread clearly states the divide in classes. It also droves home the meaning of the “S” symbol. Another two page splash shows an all too familiar fate for Krypton as the unraveling of secrets begins.

Once on Earth, Kal-El’s journey is hidden behind panels showcasing the struggles at hand. The wait isn’t too long as a full page panel welcomes in the Man of Tomorrow into the good fight. Action images capture the classic feel of Superman stories. This leads into a unique full page with Carey’s lettering setting up a catching panel. The aftermath is filled with shocking surprises while ushering readers to the close. Ince the final page hits, the art displays a haunting look as time is fleeting for happiness. It’s an excellent showcase for a debut tale.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

The latest entree into the Absolute Universe makes its’ own path while maintaining the Superman mystique. Aaron presents an emerging hero’s journey with strong writing. Sandoval, Arreola and Carey craft the visuals of two worlds composing what will utimately become the greatest symbol of hope in a dark universe.

IT HAPPENED ON HYDE STREET: DEVOUR #1 (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS)

Spiraling out of the page of Ghost Machine's Hyde Street is a story that tackles this notion head on. IT HAPPENED ON HYDE STREET: DEVOUR #1 by Maytal Zchut, Leila Leiz, Alex Sinclair and Rob Leigh takes readers on a terrifying journey.

Let’s take a trip through the horror unfolding.

IT HAPPENED ON HYDE STREET: DEVOUR #1 by Maytal Zchut, Leila Leiz, Alex Sinclair and Rob Leigh (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Zchut layers the story to cover three generations of family. Each woman involved is at a different point where their feelings of image are at an all time high. Miss Goodbody plays the devil on the shoulder exploiting the fears each carries. It leads the family down a winding road of false belief and ultimate harm. Bringing the realistic nature of extreme weight loss plays perfect to cement a solid base for the story.

Once the tale shifts towards the youngest of the family's 3 leads, events change. The story gives off a sense of false hope. Can the broken cycle of mental pressure and physical harm be broken? Readers watch as Lily sees chilling examples of the results of their struggles. This leads to a fitting closing act. It constructs a lingering question before departing. The question of "did the end justify the means" will stick with readers post story. Bringing the realistic piece of horror to the forefront nails the landing. The Hyde Street brand adds another hit to their roster.

Leiz and Sinclair bring out the real terror of the subject matter. The feeling of doubt and despair pours off the leads throughout the story. Miss Goodbody looks maniacal as she pressures all to take her "offer" of Devour. Her full page splash gives the moment an exclamation point. In its aftermath, the users show off the shocking change. It hits readers with a shocking realization of what each has sacrificed on their goal to "look better".

The issue also has some excellent splash pages. Hyde Street in its' innocence camouflages the growing secret behind its' location. This leads to the climax of the unfolding horror. With another strong two page splash, a turning point is indented before the closing act. With a near full page, the image sends chills down readers spines as the horror strikes again. It's complimented by the final page. A full page image leaves readers with much to ponder as the chapter ends for now with a parting scare.

FINAL POINT: 9.2

The latest addition to Hyde Street tackles a real life horror with a unique spin. Zchut constructs a very grounded look at a scarring dilemma with building drama. Leiz and Sinclair craft a striking look at the high price of beauty with the panels. Often in horror, the scariest things are not hat others do, but what we do to ourselves. "Devour" brings that statement front and center with a direct shot.

THE NICE HOUSE BY THE SEA #4 (DC COMICS/VERTIGO)

Ten people are picked to live in a paradise when the world is collapsing all around them. It is a tempting offer to survive but at what cost? That is the premise behind 2021’s The Nice House By The Lake.

The second chapter arc of the mysterious saga returned in 2024. It is also fitting that this series will now be running under a returning and legendary banner of DC Comics with its’ latest issue.

The Nice House By The Sea #4 by James Tynion IV, Álvaro Martínez Bueno, Jordie Bellaire and Andworld Design debuts the new incarnation of DC VERTIGO (announced at this years’ NYCC event)!

Let’s take a closer look at where things now stand!

The Nice House By The Sea #4 by James Tynion IV, Álvaro Martínez Bueno, Jordie Bellaire

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tynion keeps this issue grounded around Oliver and his struggles. The conflicting personalities of the “second” house begin to wear on the actor. In comparison to the first series, the common bond of friends is lacking with the new set. It is based on their profession status. Being placed on a pedestal leads to a growth in ego. It also leads to a false sense of invulnerability.

Oliver and Walter’s backstory gets strong points of clarity. The tragic heart break unleashes a bold reaction from Walter. Readers watch as this builds into a breaking point in the story. The fallout examines the brooding tactics between strangers knowing their future isn’t guaranteed. Readers watch as a shocking action takes place which might seal one group’s future or fate. The closing page leaves events off with an ominous feel. A parting panel concludes a deep ride into quite the engaging tale.

Bueno and Bellaire lead off events with a powerful two page spread. The initial moment between Walter chasing Oliver sets the tone for the deeper decent into their history. The security footage compliments Walter’s frustration at previous moves. Readers get a fun “road map” full page explaining events in recap.

Once entering the final act, the art shows off the true horror of the story. Bueno and Bellaire leave nothing behind showing one character’s fate for breaking rules. Each image cements the mounting horror. It ultimately leads into a full, wordless page. The imagery spotlights the devious actions taken. In its wake, the following panels conclude an impactful tale with a chilling statement before leaving. Rest assured, the art sells the grave stakes of actions leading into its’ next phase.

FINAL POINT: 9.3

It is fitting that The Nice House By The Sea leads Veritgo’s return. Tynion pens a powerful tale of loss and extreme measures. Bueno and Bellaire lock the audience in with the bold imagery of a paradise crumbling. The story dropped a major bombshell and readers will need to brace for impact as to what lies ahead.

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now!

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #3 by Jason Loo , Sergio Dávila, Aurie Jimenez, Alex Sinclair and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Loo has taken some bold swings with this current run. Taking a trip to the Savage Land is another case of pushing Russell into uncharted waters. The interactions with Ka-Zar provides a fresh challenge. Even Zabu can’t escape the wrath of the Werewolf.

When the story shifts to the Hood’s plans, there is a slower pace for readers to follow. It’s a more low key build, maximizing the deceit in question. Once the final pages kick in, the payoff finishes with a solid close. Both parts run equal enough to give an enjoyable read.

The art flourishes when the story hits the Savage Land. Davina’s take is filled with big panels. Seeing Russell take down a Tyranosauros Rex is a big statement for the readers. They will also have a reaction with Zabu’s involvement.

Its fallout shows off Ka-Zar’s skills. The fight is brutal and everything one would want with this standoff. In comparison, the Hood story panels stay steady in keeping the methodical pace of the story. Only when the last page hits does the image jump at readers. It’s an image showing that the story is very far from over.

FINAL POINT: 8.2

Jack Russell’s trip to the Savage Land is complicated to say the least. Loo’s writing balances the savage action and slow drama. Davina and the team lean into the brutal new landscape to create a new experience for the cursed crusader. There is never a dull moment with this series.

RESURGENCE OF THE VALIANT UNIVERSE #2 (Valiant Comics/Alien Books)

Live forever? That is the question plaging the Valiant Universe. Dr. Silk is promising immortality. Flamingo has been brought back from the dead. The concept is polarizing. Some heroes disagree. Others might be leaning into the thought. Sides are being drawn as the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

RESURGENCE OF THE VALIANT UNIVERSE #2 by Fred Van Lente, AJ Ampadu, Guillermo Fajardo, Julio Azamor, Lautaro Ftuli, Ludwig Olimba and Ezequiel Inverni (Valiant Comics/Alien Books)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The writing leans into Silk’s division of the heroes. Seeing the formation of sides leads to some unique pairings. Faith and Flamingo crossing paths is a prime example. The confrontation becomes less than cordial. Events go from bad to worse as Silk’s “supporters” unite. The action picks up as a spy is tries gaining intel. What follows next continues the path of putting personal choices ahead of the overall good. The result leads to more fun match-ups of classic characters with the backdrop of a world broken. Readers are left with a closing image setting the stage for a bigger conflict to finally unfold.

The art delivers a big debut for a classic pair of “hereos”. The near full page shot of Quantum and Woody welcomes them into the conflict in their own way. Seeing the formation of Silk’s Supporters tips off some great action panels. Faith’s struggle to fight the onslaught conveys the dramatic impact of Silk’s promises. This builds towards a greater lead-in to the overall situation. Closing the book is a defiant splash page that sets the tone for the big fight forthcoming.

The side story with Azamor art reflects the human aspect of Silk’s deeds. Its’ imagery is very grounded as the violence starts escalating. Events lead to a fever pitch as a turn in events mirrors the dark side of the beliefs that Silk has been selling. It offers a great counterpoint to the heroes’ flawed conflict.

FINAL POINT: 8

Valiant’s big crossover event continues with more fan favorite characters jumping in the fray. Solid writing and art move things along with tension mounting on every page. Readers will much to say about the matches paired off within these pages.

GATCHAMAN: GALACTOR #3 by Steve Orlando, Pasquale Qualano, Rebecca Nalty and Frank Cvetkovic (Mad Cave Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Katse is a very complex character. At his core, his ego drives every action. The opening pages reflect that as he refuses to let Skywolf celebrate his demise. The “doctor” visit solidifies Katse’s drive to make sure he is never looked upon as broken. This leads to an uncomfortable conversation with Leader X. Seeing Katse lie and dodge to X’s questioning makes a loud statement.

This energy carries over into the revenge acts. Orlando wirtes Katse at his most dangerous. Readers watch as Kaste’s cold persona fuels his heated attacks. From here, the end game begins. With his enemies reeling, Katse sets the stage for the final showdown. Pacing sets events up quickly without missing a beat. This connects with readers eagerly waiting for Katse to unleash the full extent of his vengeance.

Qualano steps in for art duties and gives Skywolf a big entrance to the Lobos after her actions. The intensity builds with the near full page of Leader X screaming for Katse. Unfortunately for him, Katse is getting worked on via a simple but loud panel. TThe full page image of Katse covering his tracks sets forth the final road to revenge. Events spiral at a high pace until the closing page. A full page image concludes events as Katse is ready to strike down all that oppose him.

FINAL POINT: 8.3

Gatchaman’s notorious foe starts his revenge era with an engaging tale. Orlando’s writing moves events forward as Katse makes his final play. The art brings out the redemption path while building off Katse’s re-fueled confidence. The path of vengeance starts here!

UNCANNY X-MEN #4 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone makes a loud statement early with Wolverine being left for dead. The reactions of Nightcrawler and Rogue echo the readers shock to see him beaten so badly. This directly sets the X-leader on a path towards confronting Sarah. Seeing how Rogue has evolved into the primary leader of the X-teams has been such a strength of this book. Cyclops should take notes.

The confrontation between Rogue and Sarah is one that doesn’t hold back. Sarah’s back story (including the Xavier interlude) is fueled by pain and loss. This is countered by Rogue showing another strength she has: compassion. It drives her to try appeasing the challenge but with little success. In the background, the Outliers story progresses as a nice break in-between Rogue’s fight. This spirals into the close where the team braces for a stand they have no business surviving. Since the jump, this has been THE X-book everyone has talked about for a reason. This issue solidifies that winning streak with another excellent chapter.

Marquez and Wilson hit readers with a powerful full page image that they won’t forget anytime soon. A bloodied and broken Wolverine ushers in the main portion of the book. Rogue’s worry and Nightcrawler’s calm demeanors add more layers to what unfolds next.

Rogue’s confrontation with Sarah is a fantastic throwdown. The action panels move with a solid pace. Even when Sarah’s back story drops in, it takes nothing away from the viciousness of the fight. Cowles’ lettering puts a huge exclamation point on the showdown. From here, the art shifts to the X-Men’s stand-off. The outliers panels rally the readers for what is coming. Factor in an incredible full page parting shot to send this book home and the art team drops another great issue onto fans.
