BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #6 (DC COMICS)

A voice haunts a Gotham City apartment building. Its hold on the residents inside is strong. A riot i taking shape. Batman works his way inside to attempt a rescue. What lies beyond the walls no one can prepare for. Cases like this forge the legacy of the World’s greatest detective.

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #6 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic concludes its latest case of an early era of the Dark Knight.

Let’s not wait any longer and see what happens now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters leads Batman into an unlikely lead suspect. Michelle Rickson proves to be an easy pawn in Scarface’s deadly game. The writing shows how fractured she has become while loosing the hold on the residents. Readers watch as her story slowly comes into focus. It also provides an outlet for Batman to showcase his skills. For this moment, he does have an unlikely “partner” along for the ride.

The Ventriloquist is used as a point of sympathy. Watters plays into his weak psyche as Batman breaks down events. It leads into a dramatic finish. The resolution answers many questions for the readers. In typical Batman fashion, there is no true happy endings. Readers see as the tragic tale leaves much to ponder before closing its file. Watters hits the marks with another great crime saga.

Sherman and Farrell open with a very graphic scene. Rickson’s aftermath of Scarface’s influence is front and center. There is no shying away from its’ brutal setting. Panel structures vary from page to page here. Sherman gives this book a few new perspectives while driving home the key plot points. None may be stronger than the unlikely duo.

The breakdown of the case is an instant hit with readers. Seeing Batman examine the scenes assists in clarifying what has happened. Even the scene with a certain “organ on ice” is displayed in a ripple-esque page. Witnessing how Scarface took control is a steady mix of traditional and new panel imagery. Leading into the close, Sherman elevates the scenes to an intense level. As an evacuation takes place, a panel through Batman’s protective eyes jumps out. It’s another great example of the storytelling here. The closing page offers up one last dark full page image cementing the dangers behind the walls. A perfect sendoff to the terror.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Scarface’s influence on Gotham residents pushes Batman into a dangerous corner with this chapter. Watters pens a very layered conclusion. Sherman and the art team construct impressive images to guide readers through this twisted tale. It’s another fantastic look at the Dark Knight’s early days that readers won’t want to miss.

TRANSFORMERS #20 by Daniel Warren Johnson, Jorge Corona, Mike Spicer & Rus Wooton raises the stakes in its’ latest chapter.

Let’s not wait any longer and dive into the drama!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

If there was ever any doubt of Megatron’s evil, this issue silences that. Right from the start, Johnson brings out the darkness. His manner of dealing with Astrotrain strikes a chord. Readers watch as the slow dismantling reclaims his status as the leader. It is a blunt and cruel moment which creates terrifying launching point.

In contrast, Prime’s acceptance of the moment ushers in a few changes. The conversation with Spike is heartfelt and carries weight. Prime breaking down the internal struggles he has exposes doubt. Spike counters with driving home some optimism. This leads to a few popular debuts. Even with these great appearances, everything takes a back seat to Megatron. The closing act brings a few elements full circle. It leaves events with a haunting statement. There is no escaping what is being built here.

Corona & Spicer open up with a quick rush of action. Astrotrain’s ill-fated attack begins with a loud near half-page image. The following panels bring the excitement. A half page starts Megatron’s response. Their fight is as brutal as one might think. It closes with a close-up of Megatron, poised for his next move.

The art dips into a few other side-plots before going to Prime’s time. A fantastic near full page reveals the latest with Ultra Magnus. The Cybertron moments hit their marks before passing the spotlight back to Earth. Prime’s counter moves cover a few emotions. The banter with Spike closes with a superb glance at a sunset. Readers watch as some notable Autobots crash the scene via near full page image. There are some more great images before Megatron takes back attention. Readers watch as the closing sequence is vicious and unforgiving. Once all the smoke clears, the final panel drives home a big exclamation point that Megatron is back! Incredible work overall with the art.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.4

Megatron’s revenge tour begins with painful lessons of respect. Johnson’s writing unleashes the pure evil of the Decepticons. Corona and Spicer takes readers on a ride with the artwork. The last page brings into focus where events are going. Is the Energon Universe ready for what’s been unleashed?

Let’s take a closer look at where events lie now.

UNCANNY X-MEN #14 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson, & Clayton Cowles (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone breaks this story up into three parts. The first has been devoting time to Henrietta Benjamin. Her backstory of navigating the bigotry of Haven, Louisiana’s past finally gets its payoff. Readers watch as her evolution takes a big turn. It ties events back to the present with a large upside. Where the connection is made surrounds the young mutants under Rogue’s watch.

The Outliers’ journey provides a stop gap to head to the close. Simone has built this team up very well. At their core, they mirror X-themes of the past. Readers sense how they fill a needed space on the team. Ultimately, the franchise of this squad steps up to take the spotlight.

Rogue hijacks Gambit’s tale with much fanfare. Normally, this wouldn’t work well. Simone writes arguably the best version of Anna Marie. When she crashes the pages, readers watch with delight the passing of attention. It leads into more mystery surrounding Remy’s drama. Once in the final stages, all roads lead to an expected landing. It is one that fans are ready for after the two issue build.

Has it been noted how excited fans are Marquez is back on the book? The full page image of the Outliers with Man-Thing transitions from the flashbacks with ease. It is followed with another full page breakdown piece. Readers see how the team deals with Man-Thing’s gaze with big delight.

Events take a backseat once Rogue arrives to fight Sadurang. The near full page image barrels into view. Rogue throwing hands with the monster speaks volumes. Even with Gambit’s roll away panels, nothing comes close to the fight. Once the smoke clears, the flashbacks jump into the present. A full page image ties events up timely as the chapter winds down. How things mesh from here should lead to some exciting times.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

A tale of two teams give readers much to talk about with this latest chapter. Simone’s writing weaves through many plots while building up the drama. Marquez and company bring the action with a wild sequence of events. This series lives up to its’ booking every time out.

Let’s take a closer look at what transpires now.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #8 by Scott Snyder, Marcos Martín, Muntsa Vicente, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder dances in the horror aspect of this version of the Batman rogue. Fries is completely unhinged. His twisted view deviates from the normal themes. Readers watch as Batman struggles to find a way out of this trap. Where Bruce finds strength turns out to be an unlikely yet effective source.

The bond between his childhood friends continues to breathe new life into this take. Their remembrance of their fallen friend covers many emotions. It also provides the “tough love” events that Bruce Wayne needs to survive. Snyder weaves these conversations in perfect unison of Batman’s fight. Nothing feels overdone or forced. The result kickstarts a strong finish. Much like the Absolute Universe, the close is anything but cliche. It provides steady ground to pause on while teasing a tragic fate to come. Excellent storytelling per usual.

Martin and Vicente’s opening teases the terror of Fries jr. Coloring brings the mood down to a somber tone as Fries goes to work. As his torture starts, Wayne shows his pain via a striking full page image. This is followed up by a bold two page image. Seeing how his flashbacks intertwine with his dilemma will touch a nerve with readers.

It pairs with the friends remembrance well. The use of shadows constructs the tone until its’ true reveal. Readers watch as it gives way to Batman’s arrival via half page panel. Action picks up quick with the frantic setting driving the moment. Another fantastic full page image starts the closing moments of the book. It leaves readers with a sound understanding of what just transpired. The closing page unveils a surprise move as Batman’s world takes another giant loss. Events are wrapped up nicely with a on the horizon.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

A cold day in Gotham wraps up with a true perspective of the Absolute Universe. Snyder’s writing encompasses the true horror of the classic Batman rogue. Martin and the art team exposes the terror lying within a cold heart. Judging by the ending, things are only getting worse for Bruce Wayne’s ever fractured world.

Let’s see what’s cooking up on this side of the galaxy!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The writers take take full advantage with bringing out the worst of Gardner. Right form the start, his arrogance shines. Being paired with an inexperienced partner proves for some funny moments. Their paths head into the same direction of Baz and the Teen. Readers watch as they head on a “fun” trip to Necrocopia.

It doesn’t take long for events to head south on all parties. Baz and the teen’s search for a battery leads into a more serious tone. Guy’s plot is pure mayhem. It is filled with great punchlines while his scared partner processes what is going on. Readers will have much to enjoy here. Events circle back to Baz’s story. The writing mixes in a few curves before swaying the ending. The last page throws everything off as this story gets some foundation started. It’s a great hook for readers to be locked in heading to next chapter.

Marion and Nahuelpan present a solid look at the corps latest escapades. The opening sequence with Gardner captures his snarkiness grins. Even as he thinks he’s outsmarting everyone, the art shows otherwise. His new partner strikes a chord as being ill-prepared for what’s next. Guy’s confrontation leads into a full page reveal. It doesn’t take long for the action to start. A two page splash captivates while laying the base for more to come.

Baz is more expression based. His reactions to the Teen (and Ellie Stewart) provide more light-hearted times. This carries to the half shot of Necrocopia. Readers watch as they walk into trouble. Their story takes a turn in the closing pages. The tone is more serious emersed in a dream state. This leads into a very striking last page. Once here, events close with a new mystery at hand. It’s a fine pint to build as this story progresses forward.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.1

A trip to Necrocopia takes many turns for the Corps as a new arc starts. The writing catches the best (& worst) of Guy Gardner. Simon Baz’s portion gets some impressive moments heading to the last page. Fans won’t be seeing red when it’s over. They’re only gonna be seeing green as they go pick this one up at the LCS.

INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE: BATTLE BEAST #1 by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Annalisa Leoni & Rus Wooton

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kirkman throws readers back into the battle with this debut story. The opening pages serve as a reminder of the dangerous threat Beast truly is. There is no remorse shown as his quest becomes unfulfilled. His banter with the ship computer provides some humorous aspects before delving into a new path. Once at this stage, events return to its violent form.

As his new combatant debuts, Beast shows his trademark confidence. Kirkman crafts the moments as the build to the bout locks readers in. Once the action starts, it never pauses for space. Readers watch as nothing is off limits in the battle. Beast does what he does best: fight. The resolution brings forth a fitting close. It also delivers a new wrinkle into plans. This locks in well with Beast’s mission. The writing wraps events up for now with a sense of what’s to come.

Ottley and Leoni kick events off with a familiar scene. The half page carnage serves as a quick reminder of what Beast is all about. A full page shot of his ship in space spots a quick pause in the drama. Readers watch as it becomes short lived. Ottley delivers on a full page bloody scene before the quick origin starts. The moments are concluded with another great full page image. It’s a fitting transition stop before the detour in story begins.

Rhino rocked by a heart attack. An unknown assailant orchestrating an attack on everyone’s favorite Web Head. The Wall-Crawler is drugged out of his mind. Peter Parker’s only ally is Norman Osborn?! Now he has to deal with the return of Itsy Bitsy?! SPIDER-MAN IS BACK BAY-BAY!!!!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #3 by Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, & Joe Caramagna continues its’ impressive return to basics!

Let’s take a deeper dive & see what unfolds now!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #3 by Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Is it even Spider-Man without personal turmoil? Kelly has dug into a buried memory of Peter and childhood “firend” Brian Nehring to fuel the drama. The opening sequence is intense as young Peter crosses Aunt May. Kelly calms fears that this is real with a simple “Oh Right..I’m drugged out of my skull”. Throw in the unstable Bitsy and Spidey has his hands full.

Their conflict is as classic of a Spidey fight you’ll see. Note: there is NOTHING wrong with that. It’s a refreshing take. The resolution even fits better than expected. Readers watch as Peter must come to grips with perception vs. reality. Even as he furthers his investigation, the sight of him working with Norman Osborn is wild. The writing shows how eerily well they work together. It’s a brief pause before the close. Once here, the mood shifts to all business. Readers watch as the long awaited showdown building since issue #1 is here. The only shame is it’s the last page. Kelly just knows how to bring out the best of Parker’s ever chaotic world.

As for the art, Larraz and Marte continue to shine. The two page spread with Bitsy vs Spidey is pure excitement. Readers watch as the pacing is ramped up to match the electric conflict. The only point it slows down is the resolution. Bitsy’s panels come across as unstable as she is. It’s fitting before the story switches gears.

Larraz mixes in some near full page images of Spidey swinging through his stops. The flashbacks with Uncle Ben and Aunt May strike a chord in reference to Nehring. It may tip off more coming but never hurts the overall picture. Once at the final moments, the full page image takes readers into the main event. A gorgeous final image reveals the true mastermind as their fight is about to finally start. I can’t compliment the art enough in these issues.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

Spidey’s throwdown with Itsy Bitsy is filled with hallucinations and heroics. Kelly’s writing is hitting every mark fans could want. Larraz and Garcia crank up the volume on the action with the art. It warrants saying one more time: SPIDER-MAN IS BACK BAY-BAY!!!!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Hama starts setting up the next phase of points with much intrigue behind it. The injection of a defecting family offers up some possibilities. Knowing what the stakes are here opens a risky play. Readers know this is more dangerous with a new leader running the show in Destro.

His maneuvering of business makes some friction with the Baroness. Readers watch as his cold demeanor escalates events. There is a great set-up but ultimately events stay on course. Dr. Mindbender’s time teases a few things but falls short of Destro’s portion. The closing teases caps off a swerve of direction as the team braces for a return that fans better get ready for.

Pelletier and the art team open up with the tense arrival of the Cobra family. The tension slowly grows as Duke makes his choice on where to go. Dr. Mindbender’s time moves very steady. A half page panel teases more to come before handing off to Destro.

The dinner meeting showcases the brooding personalities. Destro’s sinister grin spells certain danger. it contradicts the Baroness. Readers watch as her attempt at revenge falls short. Panel structure works to tell her side of events. It also shows Destro’s influence on events as well. The final pages flips some paths into new journeys. The art is very steady and gets events rolling for its’ next run.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

A light at the end of the tunnel may be in sight in this latest classic Joe run. Hama navigates the fallout of the last arc with strong writing. Pelletier delivers on bringing out the best of Destro as his new era begins. It’s always solid storytelling when checking this series out.

Events are upstaged when some notable heroes pay their respects. Their conversation isn’t well received. It fits perfectly into the emotions the JSA is carrying. Events wind down to a startling close. With the final page, there’s more mystery than closure which isn’t a bad thing.

De Latorre steps in for art and delivers big time. The two page splash of the funeral drives home the remorseful tone. It gives Garrick’s words more gravity. The feelings of the team come into focus in post. Yolonda’s guilt is unavoidable. She covers many emotions while on page. The same can be said for the other members in mention. SECRET SIX #3 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Maines throws a fun curveball in the re-appearance of Checkmate. The long standing DC covert organization gets a fresh cover while moving in shadows. Their manipulation of a senator show business is back but not without cost. Knowing how Waller’s involvement is such a critical factor raises stakes even higher. Mix that with the emotional toll of the “heroes” and it’s a powder keg ready to explode.

Sides are clearly being taken as Deadshot and Dreamer work their angles in the scenes. Lawton has had the most experience with Waller. The dialogue reflects that past with an uncertain future. His interactions with Catman carry the same sense. Dreamer’s confessions concerning Waller only drives a larger wedge between members. This all comes to a head with the closing act. Pacing helps kick events into gear. It also provides a surprise reveal as their game of cat and mouse just got more extreme.

Segovia and Beredo start the party with a full page image of the club. It’s a pace change from the views form Washington. Lurking in the shadows are the Six. Each panel fuels more uneasiness. The art throws a fun curve in as they change into their nightlife wear. It’s a calm moment before the drama ramps up.

The panels focus on the interactions between the teams. There is much tension between Deadshot and Catman. It falls short in comparison to the groups major issues. Jay and Nia’s distrust shines again in this chapter. Even with a quick pause, it doesn’t take long to force the action. Events start revealing the true nature in the club. It all boils down to a shocking full final page. The chapter closes with a great cliffhanger to lead into a more exciting path next go around.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

BLACK CANARY: BEST OF THE BEST #6 (DC COMICS)

To the winner goes the spoils. Dinah Lance has dug deep to try winning a fight. Normally, this would be enough to secure victory. This is anything but a normal fight. Lady Shiva is her opponent. The prize is being crowned “The Best of The Best”. Dinah struggles to focus on the bout when her mother’s life hangs in the balance. What will weigh out when the bell ring in the final round?

BLACK CANARY: BEST OF THE BEST #6 by Tom King, Ryan Sook, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles doesn’t leave t in the hands of the judges for the finale.

Let’s take a deeper dive & see who claims victory!

BLACK CANARY: BEST OF THE BEST #6 by Tom King, Ryan Sook, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The fight lives up to its’ top billing on the marquee. Through King’s writing, readers witness a heavy combo of emotions connect. The story has never truly been Dinah vs Shiva. It has been overtaken by Dinah wrestling with her mother’s legacy. As she is dying, the weight finally breaks with Canary. Being thrown a Faustian deal by Vandal Savage keeps readers wondering what will be the ultimate outcome.

A decision like this doesn’t come easy. King gives Dinah a powerful moment “talking with her mother” about options. The vulnerability on display is an instant knockout. It gives such an insight into Dinah’s mind as she forces herself to make a choice. This becomes a driving force in the ultimate round. There is no way readers can’t get wrapped up into the pinnacle moments. Once her choice is made, there is no turning back. It leads into a bittersweet close. There’s a certain sense of peace with the call made which sends readers home on solid ground. Excellent work with this story.

Sook and Stewart immediately give this moment the “big fight feel” it deserves. Seeing the range of characters locked in adds to the drama. Events shift back to the hospital before the bell rings. The full page image of Dinah crying screams the painful experience unfolding. Vandal Savage’s injection into this sequence brings out a subtle break with jarring humor. It leaves the hospital in a fitting transition before the next round commences.

The full page corner mirroring image starts off the round perfectly. There is a certain level of respect built between both. The nine panel page gives off enough of this mood. It ultimately gives way to Dinah’s “talk”. How Dinah is processing everything is pouring with changes. Initially calm to boiling with rage, the art covers it all. It all ties back to the fight and two strong full page images. Sook has delivered on the action and amped it up for the finale.

As powerful of those pieces are, a half page one steals the show. This pushes events to its’ closing. Readers watch as the commentary team sends them off with style and a smile.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

What lies inside a fighter’s heart? Tom King and Ryan Sook answer that question with an epic final. King’s writing brings out the deep struggles inside of Black Canary. The art delivers on big action and even larger drama. It’s a perfect blend that doesn’t need a judge’s decision to claim victory.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #7 by Jason Aaron, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Aaron ushers in a frightening terror onto the new landscape. The opening sequence wastes little time in showing a glimpse of the horror awaiting. Readers watch as the precision attack decimates the Omega Men’s surge. Once in full frame, Brainiac is easily different than his predecessor. The writing plays into the unhinged personality as the backstory begins.

It is a take that plays a game with the mental stability of the cold genius. Aaron gives a tragic spin while slow rolling the drama. Brainiac’s evolution is not without consequence. As truths surface, the damage done is immense. The fallout leaves the audience with a clear picture of madness. Aaron moves Brainiac’s awakening to a disturbing conclusion. Knowing what he’s done in little time, the overwhelming sense of danger grows. The issue ends on a solid point with a familiar destination locked in its sights. How Krypton’s last son handles this will be something to watch.

Even where one soldier sees his own bones, the art holds nothing back. this leads into a full page image of Brainiac in his psychotic glory. The design is very unique in presentation. It teases a backstory that paints quite a picture.

The art teams shows how weathered Brainiac has become before a truth sinks in. Once at this stage, events have left him with a new sense of beginning. A close-up of a smile speaks volumes. GRIM #22 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Phillips takes Harrow into dangerous waters with her current dilemma. Opening with a chess match versus The End is an undeniable scene. Their banter eludes to an ultimate showdown coming. The aura surrounding Time keeps readers very intrigued. Knowing a possible future, both demonstrate a sense of denial. It provides a set-up for the main drama course.

Adira’s prescence is polarizing to say the least. The catalyst of Jessica’s drama now appears hat in hand. This shift in persona causes much pause amongst Jessica and her allies. It leads into a face-off issues in the making. The payoff doesn’t miss its’ mark. Phillips crafts an unlikely point of possible hope. Before readers can get settled in for it, a massive curve is thrown into the final page. Long time readers better brace for impact. It is a pivotal and game-changing moment. Another reason why Grim gets all the praise it does.

Flaviano and Renzi construct some of the most ingenious images of the series to date. The chess match reveal between Harrow and The End is gifted a full page visual. This moves events into the deep rooted conversations between Time and Jessica. Both are reluctant to accept their future. Their facial expressions show how both are slowly breaking in their denial.

Once Adira enters the picture, panels lean into her deep regret of failure. The art shows the remorse in her actions. Readers watch as this quickly gives way into the previously mentioned showdown. SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #41 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tynion plays his best hand early in this chapter. The trademark of this series is the slow burn drama. In the opening, a young Erica attends the services of a fallen victim. It is reflected in the narration a connection to a recent monster hunt. the dialogue with one of the family members depicts the emotional coldness needed for the line of work. Readers see a lengthier example of this with Jessica Slaughter.

The relationship between mentor and student is complex at best. Readers watch as Jessica is wearing down to the grind of the business. It is also noted as to the forming of Erica’s personality in this mix. Her interactions with Aaron Slaughter are prime points of this. Their dialogue ranges from playful to business. Tynion never lets the mood sway too far from the looming danger of the Order. A new assignment draws many reactions. It teases the audience long enough to hook them in. There’s no better example than the last page. Settle in for a new case with deadly overtones.

Dell’edera and Muerto start events off at a funeral. With no dialogue for two pages, they walk readers through the somber times. The mix of flashback panels to present mirror what Erica is thinking. It is a prime set-up before heading back to reality.

The interactions with Jessica and Erica feel organic with their connection. There’s a sense of “business as usual” in each panel. Erica’s acceptance of this “normal” is written on her face. This transcends to a solid two page spread. The brief panels segway to her contact with Aaron. Panel set-up moves their conversation right along to its ending place. The art sets up a tease of more dangers in their new assignment. This plays up to the last page perfectly. Like a true horror movie, the full page image jinxes itself with the dialogue. It’s a great place to pause for now and reload for what’s coming next.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Dell’edera and Muerto bring the complex relationships into the spotlight before setting off on their next job. This is followed up with a special grid panel set-up for new characters. It brings out the best of their conversation, pushing Dante’s fallout higher. Their close ups tease the many personalities now involved. It is brief but provides a steady gap to regroup on Annalise and company.

The brutality of the situation never is held back. Readers watch as the robot handles would be assailants with no remorse. Annalise’s reactions vary in the midst of searching for her father. A close up of her crying eyes speaks louder than any dialogue when the time hits. The escape from the island is capped off with a half page image. This jumpstarts events into the closing pages. RADIANT BLACK #33 (IMAGE COMICS/MASSIVEVERSE)

The world of Marshall Ward has taken some drastic turns. His best friend Nathan has left for California. There’s a mysterious killer on the loose. Plus, the public opinion of his alter ego is at an all time low.

There’s no rest for the weary as a familiar threat shows up in Chicago. Familiar is the correct word, but it’s not to Marshall. That honor goes to another Massive-Verse hero. What happens when the world of ROGUE SUN shows up on RADIANT BLACK’s doorstep?

RADIANT BLACK #33 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Clark, Eduardo Ferigato, Marcelo Costa Rod Fernandes and Buddy Beaudoin looks to answer that question with interest!

Let’s not delay any longer & dive into the drama!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ward’s search for normalcy takes center stage this chapter. Meeting with Mrs. Burnett opens events with a well-placed talk. Both carry scars from the Catalyst War. The writing shows how they cope with the events’ fallout. It leads Marshall into an unlikely spot. His return home is greeted with much awkwardness. Their dialogue drives home the consensus opinion surrounding Radiant Black. This point haunts scenes until a new threat emerges on the scene.

Bludmoon’s appearance mixes up the dynamic for a big win. Seeing Marshall out of his normal element exposes a few things. His powers get tested with Bludmoon not holding back. Readers watch as their fight allows Marshall to release some pent-up rage. Once events shift to New Orleans, the attention shifts to Dylan Siegal. Their unique “friendship” reveals many similarities between both. Young heroes thrown into the deep end while learning how to navigate life. The result leads to a haunting close. Where this path leads Marshall is very uncharted territory.

The weight of Marshall’s actions dominate the art for this chapter. Opening with the candid meeting with Mrs. Burnett, readers see Marshall opening up. This spills into an awkward reunion. The full page image outside of the home pours with the uneasy feeling. As the reunion takes shape, the stern reactions proves not even family loves Radiant Black.

There’s little time to focus on this point. A two page splash brings Bludmoon front and center. There might have been a cameo from a Massiveverse creator kicking this sequence off. Their fight shows the clashes of styles. It leads into a very inopportune moment via full page shot. As events head to New Orleans, the coloring gives Bourbon Street a vibe all its own. The conversation with Dylanm and Marshall mirrors Rogue Sun #26. It still carries the same impact of the lost souls searching. The art gives a solid foreshadowing in the last panels. Where things lead from here is wide open.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.7

Marshall Ward’s evolution in the post Catalyst world takes a personal twist. Higgins and Clark examine the influence of family with the writing. The art blends a fast paced fight within the heavy reactions on display. The Massive-verse franchise continues to redefine superheroes in the modern era.
