Waid sets the stage for power to corrupt all in this chapter. Grodd’s grand scheme is poised to succeed. The opening page serves as a “new readers” guide to recapping events. Seeing how easily the League is handled sends a shock to readers. Grodd’s narration is delivered with a calm chill. It helps cement the gravity of the fight. Even when there’s glimpses of hope, they are dashed quickly. This leads to a predictable yet justified turn of events.

No matter what wins this Legion has accomplished, the goal never changed. Grodd’s quest for power takes readers into an intriguing proposal. It doesn’t take long for the egos in this unit to finally become too big. The fallout allows for a well-timed distraction. This gives an unlikely hero a chance to mount a comeback. Pacing pushes all parties into a direct line of fire. What comes out in the end is a face-off that complicates matters even further. This isn’t a bad thing by any means. Waid has key players in place for what should be an epic conclusion of the crossover.

Moore and Bonvillain welcome readers i with a chaotic first page. It’s a classic superhero fight that conveys the desperate situation at hand. Even as the Elongated Man tried mounting a last ditch effort, the panels show how futile it is. Seeing how the heroes have been displaced strikes a chord. Readers can sense time is fading fast. There’s never a moment in this sequence that says otherwise.

Once the attention is thrown back on a victorious Legion, the art shows cracks forming. Grodd reveals his true intentions with a near full page. In the background, readers see one member mirroring the others thoughts. This leads into a breakdown of great proportions. All the while, one hero re-enters the conflict. The full page image shows how they might be the key to turning tables. Pacing picks up and shows the back and forth taking place. It leads to a show-stopping final page. There’s no way readers leave the full page shot not amped up for the finale.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

An unlikely source provides a much needed spark as “We Are Yesterday” winds down. Waid conducts a very strong build for the finale. Moore and Bonvillian unveil the unstable personalities vying for control. It all leads to a final stand that is sure to be one for the ages and beyond.

Waid brings out the General’s frustrations early in this chapter. His meeting with Clayface is gruff and unapologetic. Readers can see tensions boiling over. Clayface’s reactions are telling as he smirks his way out. This aggressive attitude pushes the General into drastic times. The writing sets the stage for a very tough road for the growing pair.

Seeing how they’re being worn down from all their crime fighting, readers sense something bad is on the way. This push leans into a deadly scenario. The writing gives a small insight to Batman’s counter moves. Seeing Batman go up against an intellectual challenge drives events into fresh territory. Another aspect is Dick Grayson finding balance between both his lives. It’s a small break before the close. Once here, pacing speeds events up until the last page. Readers watch a gruesome act end events for now with a dark road ahead.

Samnee and Lopes open up with a close-up of Clayface being scolded. Grimaldi’s lecture isn’t well received. The art depicts Clayface brushing him off. This spirals into more frustration. It kickstarts a new plan of attack. The art panels show how the demand of crime-fighting starts taking a toll. This leads into a surprising twist of events.

The frantic pacing shows Batman’s unrelenting will. It moves rival mobsters into a new stat quo with the Caped Crusader. The moment is capped off with a gorgeous full page image of the pair. From here, the school days of Dick Grayson come into light. The panels break up the tense mood before returning to form. It leads into a more dramatic close. Nothing strikes a louder chord than the final image. A horrific crime is committed via near full page. A subtle panel speaks imminent danger as events wind down. This series never misses on its’ art with good reason.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

General Grimaldi brutal push puts the Dynamic Duo in the line of fire. Waid crafts another fantastic issue with the writing. Samnee and Lopes deliver on bold images while capturing a vintage era. This series continues to be one of the best every time an issue drops.

The writing bring out the most unlikely of scenarios. Readers watch as Grodd breaks down each member with pin-point accuracy. Grodd’s insulting of the fellow villains leads to entertaining exchanges. The back and forth between Grodd and Luthor fully illustrates the egos involved. Once cooler heads prevail, the story starts taking its’ final form.

Seeing the classic Legion vs. JL lineups match-up becomes a true treat for fans. The writing indicates how combustible this team truly is. Grodd’s quarterbacking attempts to keep others in check. This ultimately leads into a strong finish. Readers watch as the picture becomes into focus as to how two time periods mesh. It also tips off a new wrinkle in Grodd’s plans. Events are capped off with a solid cliffhanger as a result. This is textbook superhero storytelling.

McDaid and Kalisz kick off events with Grodd’s analyzing the Legion at hand. The full page grid image reveals much and one character’s steals the scene. A two page spread illustrates a frightening picture to the legion. Their reactions are priceless leading into their fight against the league.

The fight at the Flash Museum starts with a strong near full shot of Superman and Bizzaro. Pacing keeps events moving right along into another classic fight. Joker on fear toxin warrants a wild full page image. Other members get their page time in before leading back to Grodd. His scheming comes to fruition and showcases his overconfidence. Events conclude with a very mysterious final panel. Even with prep time, Batman is gonna have a tough time explaining this image.

Hampton, Henry, and Menon construct a superb story about John Stewart. The flashback sequences reinforce his drive into becoming a hero. Turning tragedy into triumph rings through each page. Events conclude with the full emergence of a legendary hero. It ends events in the past by building towards a bright future.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The Legion of Doom’s venture into the future starts with a chaotic & entertaining start. Seeing Grodd’s schemes come into light shines in the writing. McDaid and company craft classic superhero confrontations with the art. The final panel tips off more paradoxes in the mix which is never a bad thing in this crossover.

Waid reveals many secrets that have been building since the first chapter of JLU. The synergy with “Absolute Power” fallout cannot be denied throughout the DCU. In this case, the explanation behind Grodd’s attack comes into focus. It leads into a terrifying start for the famous Flash rogue. Readers see a glimpse of what Grodd can do with his new powers. The result is devastating for the unknowing pawn in his game.

The storyline with Air Wave has been such a mystery since emerging in “Absolute Power”. Waid plays the long game with setting up the drama. Seeing how Grodd manipulates the young hero is brutal and tragic. It is equally intense with how he manipulates his partners as well. Readers can’t help but be blown away once all the smoke clears. The fallout brings down the house as drastic measures are taken. This leads into a solid cliffhanger. With so many moving parts, nothing is lost in shuffle. As far as heroes and time, that’s another story.

Moore steps in for art duties with Bonvillain. The opening pages of Grodd’s prison escape light an explosive start. The full page shot of the League in action with Grodd narration foreshadows much. Seeing Grodd use his new powers shows the scary reach he now has. This pushes towards the slow burn build on a young hero’s mind.

Opening with Superman talking with Air Wave, the art teases optimism. After some brief action, Grodd makes his entrance. The reactions of both speak volumes to the readers. Grodd’s deceptive caring & Raid’s unknowing possession makes for a dire combination. Moore throws in a full page breakdown of where events are heading. This leads into the show-stopping close. Readers watch as Wave makes a valiant stand. It spirals into a larger fight and more surprising response. A final full page sends events into the unknown which fans won’t want to escape.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.4

The saga of Air Wave comes front and center with “We Are Yesterday” taking shape. Waid’s writing guides readers through the dark masquerade. Moore and Bonvillain construct the misleading maze a young hero walks. The results push events into a past readers won’t want to forget!
