*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

For how long Superman has bee a staple of the DCU, we often forget there was a “first time”. Waid brings readers back to the moment where Krypton’s last son debuted to the world. The writing brings out the ever optimistic boy from Smallville for a fun trip back. seeing Clark with the Kents heading to Metropolis opened up a larger path for his inevitable future.

The writing captures the innocence of Clark’s wonder. Leaving Smallville and actually being a teen puts a strain on his heroics. The dialogue between the Kents and him translates as normal family moments. Readers watch as his wonder is shaken up by a villain. It results in a tough, but needed call. The writing gives the conflict a vintage feel. This spins into a very notable fallout. Seeing a boy fly and stop a villain draws many eyes. Judging by who is featured, making the right choice may lead to wrong consequences.

Patridge & Plascencia open events with a fun image of Superman assisting with an Expo. The smile on his face never leaves as the story transitions to the past. Seeing the wonder in his face makes the moments that more endearing. This is broken up with the bus ride with the Kents. Readers watch as their back and forth plays out as typical as one may think. It’s a solid break before a full image moves events to Metropolis.

The peaceful moments are interrupted by the villain at hand. A half panel brings him into the picture. His actions are responded by a quiet go-ahead for Clark by his parents. This results in a half page save from debris crashing on innocent people. The action kicks into gear with a focus on how fast Clark is flying. Pacing helps add to these moments. As the smoke clears, it leaves a half panel of uncertainty. The closing pages open more possibilities as this look back teases a future of challenges.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

A peek into the early days of Superboy showcases the rough start of his public debut. Waid crafts an entertaining tale with the writing. Patridge and the art team present a point in a young hero’s life before innocence is lost. This is one with a wide open path with many directions to go.
