SUPERMAN #32 (DC COMICS)

When the fate of the world is at stake, a hero emerges. In this case, “hero” is a term used very loosely.

LEX LUTHOR IS BACK!

After recent events, Luthor dropped off the radar to re-assess. His time away was one of peace. It was never going to last with evil looming in the wings. With “DC K.O” needing someone in possession of absolute power, how could Luthor say no?

SUPERMAN #32 by Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Alejandro Sánchez & Ariana Maher presents the return of Lex Luthor!

Let’s take a closer look and see how this plays out!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson takes readers for quite the ride with Luthor for this chapter. The opening shows Lex at his crowning moment. Knowing what he believes is his destiny, his dialogue comes off as smug and confident as ever. Watching Grodd tip him off to Doomsday’s plans is just enough to launch his own view of divide and conquer.

Readers watch as many familiar tropes are used to set the plan in motion. Including in some fan-favorites is no mistake. Williamson uses their rage and questionable personas to make a powder keg waiting to implode. This is especially true with the Joker. It is easy to tell the pure enjoyment Williamson is having creating these moments. It serves as a sound transition point to another lingering plot point.

Superboy-Prime and Lois Lane run through a gauntlet of extremes. Due to the events of time and space, certain plot points are allowed to resurface. This proves successful as more party crashers arrive. The writing mirrors Prime’s twisted view of the world while fighting back. It results in a questionable move. How that will play out due to K.O.’s current events is anyone’s guess. For now, its a perfect closing point until next chapter.

Barrows & Ferreira hit the Lois Lane drama with a two page splash. While early, it helps to drive home the close when time. In between, its all about Lex Luthor. The art locks in on Lex’s pure hatred pouring through when confronting Superman. The flashbacks with the Legion Of Doom make their points with a full Joker image stealing the page. Its a solid build before heading into K.O.

As events move back to Prime and Lane, the full shot of the Legion attacking sets the pace. Lois’ reaction is perfect for this encounter. Her unbreakable will steps up. A shocking two-page splash ushers in a surprise factor. Readers watch as not everything is as what it seems. This goes into the close with a surprise final page. Secrets are revealed as the “K.O".” moment takes hold. Fans will have a great deal to enjoy here.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The return of Lex Luthor takes center stage in an exciting K.O. tie-in. Williamson’s writing brings back the legendary villain superbly. Barrows, Ferreira & the art team shine as the egotistical figure returns with a vengeance. Is Luthor humanity’s last hope? Only one way to find out.

DC K.O. #2 (DC COMICS)

Ready for round two? The fate of the DCU is at stake with a dangerous tournament. Darkseid has returned more powerful than ever. The lord of the Absolute Universe wants more. This has forced the Justice League’s hand. Representatives have been selected to fight.

The fight has already had some unpredictability play out. Batman was eliminated. Lex Luthor has returned with a vengeance. Even the Quantum Quorum have no idea what’s coming. Darkseid is hiding inside of Booster Gold! That was all in issue #1?!

DC K.O. #2 by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Xermánico, Javier Fernández, Alejandro Sánchez & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou rings the bell for another wild round.

Let’s take a closer look at where the next fall leads!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue centers around Superman’s drive to win. The writing goes back to the previous board game amongst friends. Their banter eludes to life outside of heroes. Williamson tosses in a comment that spins into something more. With the notion Superman would be president in play, this only amplifies with the chapter. It also allows for another figure to step up with their own vision.

Seeing Lex Luthor in his evil glory is a sight. Through the combat to acquire the DCU’s more powerful weapons, Luthor shows the lengths he’s willing to go. There is more fun chaotic brawling in this chapter. Joker is stealing scenes in this tourney. His antics do fall back behind Luthor. Watching a daring move made sends shockwaves to the audience. This is topped by Superman’s response. Snyder times it perfectly to hit. This is the moment of the book. Even as the ending throws another curve, it doesn’t hit as hard as what the Man Of Steal has done. Another excellent read.

Fernández and Sánchez give readers many fond action points throughout this chapter. The two page splash of weapons covers the dream list of DC lore. This spirals into the featured match-ups of the 32 combatants. Some pairings leave a stronger reaction than expected. Joker taking out Giganta is a prime example of this. Seeing his devilish grin as he plots sends chills before some dark humor.

Luthor and Superman get a proper two page splash. It hits every mark that readers would want to see. Their fight gets upstaged by a striking full page image. Panels match their hatred for each other while the tourney pressure weighs in. The art team throws in a small break with a Venomed Lobo versus Starro. Readers are gifted a series of two page splashes. This will be a popular moment before things take a sharp turn.

Once here, Superman’s move takes center stage. The event gets a bold two page splash. It helps amplify the end of this round. With the field dwindled down, a simple grid page shows who’s left. The closing act gives another panel a monster, but inevitable feel. Another shake-up occurs to bring down the house. The art team is really bringing it for this series thus far.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

The second round of DCU combat goes full throttle on bringing the action. There’s a fair share on exciting match-ups presented via the writing. Fernández and Sánchez pull out all the stops with the art. Two rounds in and there’s no judge’s decision needed. This is a complete knockout for readers!

G.I. JOE #14 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” In the case of Cobra Commander and Duke, it’s a “partnership” of convenience. Destro set up the Commander to be killed by Ripper and his friend. Considering what the Commander has done to the Dreadnoks, it wasn’t a hard sell.

The X factor in this plan was Duke. While out on surveillance, the G.I. Joe saves his enemy. Now both are targets and on the run! This can’t end well for someone, right?

G.I. Joe #14 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire & Rus Wooten continues the “Dreadnok War” saga.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest chapter!

G.I. Joe #14 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire & Rus Wooten (Image Comics/Skybound)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson opens the chapter with the only calm moment of the story. Destro is full of confidence that his plans have been a success. The writing shows him at an all time high. In contrast, Cobra Commander is defiant in staying alive. His dialogue reflects a man trying to survive at all costs. Duke knows this all too well. Once a reluctant call is made, all Hell breaks loose.

Readers watch as the bullets start flying from here on out. It is total non-stop thrills from this stage. Commander never waivers as the odds become increasingly stacked. The same can be said for Duke. As opposite as two can be, there is a sense of duty around them. This moves into the closing pages. Once the calm mode sets in, the writing translates into a horror sense. Readers see another player has entered the game. It is a pivotal moment as a dangerous action is taken. How it plays out will be anyone’s guess.

The true winner of this chapter is Tom Reilly. The opening image of Destro addressing world leaders locks in his pompous attitude. Replacing Cobra Commander is easier said than done. While escaping with Duke, more drastic measures are taken. An incredible two page splash fires up the engines as the story takes off. The Commander’s half panel stretches his desperate fight to the letter. He’s not the only one getting some action this chapter.

Duke’s fight with Buzzer pops off panel. Readers will be all in for watching the attempted escape. Another gracious two page splash switches moment up perfectly. The chaotic scenes go underground in escape. Somehow, both escape the first round of combat. The art switches moods into a more horrific state. This builds off a fallout panel of the pair walking into town. Readers watch a full page image show the Commander defeated. A new player enters the field as there’s no rest for the wicked. Reilly’s art style is born for this series!

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Unlikely allies must find a way to survive as Cobra continues its hit-attack. Williamson throws caution to the wind with the writing. Reilly’s art elevates pages with each panel. The team is firing on all cylinders as this event continues to deliver on its’ hype! Don’t mis it!

DC/MARVEL: BATMAN/DEADPOOL #1 (DC COMICS/MARVEL COMICS)

Earlier this year, the “big two” of comics reunited for an unlikely team-up. “Deadpool/Batman” launched a new wave of crossover stories. This new united front sent fans into a wild frenzy. It teased the idea for more characters and impossible stories. The creative aspect has been one of many wins for Marvel and DC. They recently has a crossover involving Thor/Shazam & The Flash/Fantastic Four on their digital library platforms. This was followed with a push to sign up for the services, getting more people into comics.

Before 2025 wraps up, the publishers are reuniting for another special edition. It’s time for round two between the Dark Knight & the Merc with a Mouth!

DC/MARVEL: BATMAN/DEADPOOL #1 by Grant Morrison, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez, Todd Klein, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, Frank Cvetkovic, Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, Wes Abbott, Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner, Tamra Bonvillain, Dave Sharpe, G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson, Francesco Segala & Steve Wands deliver on another round of mash-up tales.

Let’s break down what is unfolding this go around!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Much like the first crossover, the book is jam-packed with an all-star creative lineup. This results in some show-stealing pairings. None fully steal the spotlight away from the lead pair. A great deal of this revolves around the vivid imagination of Grant Morrison.

Being no stranger to Batman, Morrison throws him into an unstable scenario. This is largely due to his dance partner. While investigating a murder under Amanda Waller, Batman stumbles into Deadpool’s path. The result takes clever shots at Wade’s “origin”. Morrison’s writing keeps its’ zip as the story moves forward. Readers watch as the zany side of their pairing sets a course for a deadly villain's grasp. Knowing Morrison’s history with said character, the mood sets into a comfortable yet dangerous tone.

This allows some breathing room as the story starts taking a different shape. There are many creative reaches attempted. Most all hit their marks. Readers that know some history will pop for a huge reveal in these moments. It spirals the story into a unique spot. The result is a fast finish to tie up loose ends. Ordinarily, this might misfire. Knowing what Morrison does best, the finish is vintage. It sends readers home on a high note until the next go around. You can’t ask for much more than that.

Mora and Sánchez start off events with a traditional look at Gotham City. the brooding tones are very evident in these pages. It ushers in the investigative portion of Batman’s case. This is the arguably last “normal” moment of the story. From here, everything moves to mirror Deadpool’s aura in the chapter.

The two page spread pays a small homage to a classic DC tale. It doesn’t take long before the 4th wall is shattered completely. Once Batman appears, the panels spotlight the clash in personalities. There is plenty of wacky Deadpool moments here. After the pace slows up, the main antagonist reveals themselves.

Readers are gifted an excellent two page spread for this intro. It opens the door for the story to explore the more head-scratching times of the Dark Knight & Marvel. A full page shot welcomes in this volatile character. Panels get extremely brutal in this fight. It helps to bring everything into the final act.

Once here, a new player enters the game. The shadowy figure will raise some eyebrows and smiles. Their persona shines on the pages. They throw the story off-axis. Readers watch another Bat-version crash the party via full page. Their appearance circles the end of the tale. Events close up with a solid near full page send-off. The bar was set high for art and hit the mark for this special issue.

The sub-stories are a LOADED line-up of creators:

Hellblazer & Dr. Strange (James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, Frank Cvetkovic) brings out the dark magic side both dabble in.

Nightwing & Wolverine (Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, Wes Abbott) re-unites the Eisner-winning team behind Dick Grayson’s best adventures for another classic.

Harley Quinn & the Hulk (Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner, Tamra Bonvillain, Dave Sharpe) is as over the top as readers would hope.

Closing up shop is Static & Ms. Marvel ( G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson, Francesco Segala & Steve Wands). The story pairs up to fan-favorites leaving the readers wanting to see more of their adventures.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5

The second go-around between Wayne and Wilson heads into weird territory for a huge win. Morrison runs wild with the writing to fans’ delight. Mora and Sánchez craft amazing images to navigate the complex tale. Add in the other superb side-sagas and this is one that’s sure to please all. Don’t miss out!

G.I. JOE #13 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

Honor amongst Thieves, It is a saying that has defined many partnerships. In the case of COBRA, it is a loose connection. Cobra Commander has been making some questionable moves. This hasn't set well with Destro. Seeing a way to assume more power, actions are put into motion. No line is sacred not to cross.

Re-igniting a blood feud, Ripper walks the Commander into a deadly trap. There should be no way to survive this attack. Leave it to an unlikely hero to save the day. That hero is DUKE?!?!

Let’s take a closer look at how this event launches!

G.I. Joe #13 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire & Rus Wooten (Image Comics/Skybound)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson constructs the tangled web of deceit with this opening. The opening sequence of Cobra Commander sets the pace. His slithering dialogue shows the lack of compassion he carries. This sense of arrogance leads to the initial salvo from Destro. Manipulating Ripper into action is a cutthroat move. Readers watch as the mood shifts quickly into a state of revenge. Adding in the flashbacks of the original Cobra Commander series throws more gas on an already exploding situation.

This provides a pivot to Duke’s latest events. Taking time to pay respects is interrupted by duty. Knowing who controls Energon can rule the world, any PTO is off the table. Readers watch as the investigation takes a violent turn. With the set-up coming to goal, all seems lost for the Cobra leader. Action escalates even further with the most surprising “Guardian Angel”. The writing shows how fast the Commander can flip on a dime. Knowing this, Duke takes an ultimate gamble. This segways to a frantic escape. The deck is completely stacked against a duo no one expected. It is all to a delight of an opportunist on the final page. The chapter moves very fast but leaves a monster first impression.

Reilly is back on art duties & there’s no one better for this assignment. The despair of Dr. Laszlo boils as the full image of the Commander on his throne takes hold. There are subtle reactions between the two Cobra leaders as plans are made. This transfers over to Destro’s mischievous ways. Using Bellaire’s coloring as the driver, the flashback sequences cement the deal to kill the Commander. Parting with a sly grin, Destro feels the changes are already starting to happen.

Duke visiting Tyler Frost’s grave gets a full page image. Tying in the events of Transformers #2 adds to the emotional impact. This provides the start of Duke’s investigation via two page splash. Upon arrival, he sees a shocking vision in the desert. Panel structure does a slow build into the attack commences. Once here, readers watch as the action turns up to 11. Ripper’s attack on the Commander pops off the page. The half page shot throws everything out of control. This breaks when Duke makes the save. Using the nine-panel format, the back and forth of Duke and Commander jumps off page. It leads to a stunning half panel. There’s no time to rest as a two page splash welcomes in Ripper’s back-up. It all goes according to plan if the final page has anything to say about it. The full page image screams volumes as this saga is just getting started.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5

“The Dreadnok War” kicks off with an explosive first salvo. Williamson takes readers on a fast-paced action roller coaster. Reilly & Bellaire bring the heat with incredible art visuals. If you want an event living up to the hype, look no further.

Seeing how Bruce Wayne watches his children step into their heroic roles teases a possible end to his Bat days. What would happen to Gotham without Bruce Wayne?

The story shifts back to the present K.O. Fallout. After some planning, Batman sneaks out of his limbo into a New Gotham. The writing sees a distorted vision come to life. There are many elements at play. Williamson takes advantage of the open playbook with risky calls. One of which is the distinct viewpoint of his most faithful son.

Readers watch as this boils over into a direct conflict. The action speeds up the emotions. It throws more cracks into Wayne’s foundations of justice. There is nothing to prepare for the closing pages. Williamson leaves events with an intense cliffhanger. Knowing what this could mean changes everything as far as legacy and family goes. DC K.O. #1 (DC COMICS)

Darkseid is” inevitable. The dark lord of Apokolips has found new success. He has created his own universe in which he rules. His thirst for power hasn’t been quenched. The home of the DCU is next on his list to conquer. In the past, he has always been stopped. This time feels different. With more power flowing through him, the goal is within reach.

Darkseid’s threat is so grave that is has formed a Quantum Quorum in hopes to stop him. Their solution will challenge both hero and villain in new ways. A champion must be found via combat to step up and fight. Who will it be?

DC K.O. #1 by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Xermánico, Javier Fernández, Alejandro Sánchez & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou kicks off an ambitious new storyline.

Let’s ring the bell and get this saga started!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Leave it to Scott Snyder to craft such a wild concept. Opening the story with a board game among friends eases readers into the book. It doesn’t take long for the action to pick up. A new and deadlier Darkseid has arrived. His devastation is endless. Multiple heroes are taken down in combat. This leads to the real truth to come to light. The Quorum has presented their case of what’s to come.

Readers watch as the proposed solution is a gamble to say the least. The writing shows the extreme lengths in question. After seeing how Darkseid has risen to his new level, it casts doubts of all hope. This moves into breaking down the possible answer. Snyder shows the difficult build toward the imposed deadline. Scenes vary from forging attacks to saying goodbye. This results in a chaotic close. There’s plenty of action to flood the pages. In its wake is the opening stages of the fight for the crown. The close teases much before dropping a major bombshell. After finishing reading this, there’s no question that readers have walked into a true event.

Fernández & Sánchez open up with Superman ready for a fight. It is a brief but effective pace setter. Even as the “game night” teases a calm, it isn’t permanent. The two page spreads of Darkseid laying waste to Earth is huge! The art shows how global his attack truly is. Laying waste to the heroes in beginning raises his threat levels. This quickly wraps up as the Quorum takes stage. In this moment, a full page brings Darksied’s rise to the forefront.

The weight of the possible solution is not an easy one to carry. Superman’s expressions scream the deadly cost at hand. Batman’s calm sense gives way to an emotional onslaught. This carries into the previously mentioned splashes. The “end of days” feel shines in these pages. This gives off a bittersweet aura as the heroes prepare for combat. The next pages are all action as the heroes attempt to go on offense. Readers watch as the chaos takes hold of all involved. This results in a shocking turn of events. There is also a few shocking moments as to who’s eluded to join the party. As great as these scenes are, the final panel takes it home. It is a subtle one but packs quite a goodbye punch. No better way to end an event like this.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

Desperate times call for extreme measures as the DCU’s fate hinges on trail by combat. The script maintains a high tempo during the non-stop drama. Readers are gifted a strong visual experience via the art. This issue goes for the knockout early and often. Brace for what’s coming!

SUPERMAN #30 (DC COMICS)

Time has run out on the Man Of Steel. After being attacked by an Absolute Legion Of Super Heroes, Superman is saved by The Time Trapper. Knowing that DOOMSDAY is the man in the cloak only complicates things further. Placed in a pocket dimension, the ghost of the past continue to appear.

Superboy-Prime has also been brought here for safety. The Kryptonian Pair deny orders and look for answers themselves. This puts them on an unlikely path to the Absolute Universe. Once here, Superman finds the forgotten hero Booster Gold. He also finds more than he bargained for as Superboy-Prime switches sides.

SUPERMAN #30 by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez, and Ariana Maher concludes its “Legion of Darkseid” storyline.

Let’s take a closer look at how this storyline all plays out.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson delivers a massive pay-off for what has been building here. The intro into Saturn Girl’s backstory shows the influence of Darkseid. It comes across more of a possession feel that only grows from here. Adding in Superboy-Prime to the ranks really stacks the deck. Readers watch as hope slowly slips further out of grasp. The moment continuously breaks Superman down into a state of despair. It is a rare sight but effective.

There is a great break into this story. “Where is Lex Luthor” is a question looming in this series since #25. The writing proves an exclamation point answer. How he will factor in the future is unclear. In this moment, his presence is a how steal. Had it not been for the final act, Luthor takes this issue. Another character grabs the spotlight right to the end.

The subtle 4th wall lead-in is well placed. His dialogue with Superman is superb. It is a new side that readers have never seen. This proves to be the change in events needed to conclude this portion of story. The final pages tie into where all roads are heading to. It is a moment that will make the rounds on NCBD as readers process what just happened. Long live the Legion indeed.

Mora and Sanchez open with a bleak flashback. The visions of Saturn Girl’s mind paint a dark picture. This fast forwards into a strong two page splash. Readers see the smug grin on Superboy-Prime’s face as he flips sides. Even as Superman valiantly fights back, the art shows how much of a lost cause it is. This helps to provide a break to highlight a long awaited return.

Luthor’s conflict is swift and direct. The panels break to show how he handles his attacker. It results in a shocking but “Luthor-esque” moment that only he can pull off. This moves into the ever-rising final act. Readers watch as a turn is taken that changes everything. Action starts ramping up as the escape is made. It leads into some personal moments that give a sense of finality coming. Superman’s part is ended with a strong full page shot. The moment is upstaged by the conflict end. Panel structure puts a nice finish to events for now. This moves everything to the close. The final page speaks volumes as another round with Darkseid is inevitable in arrival.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

Will Superman save Booster Gold from The absolute Legion? Williamson boldly answers that with a fantastic arc finale. The writing throws a few fakes before solidly connecting in the end. Mora and Sanchez elevate the pages to new heights. It’s a must-read as the DCU prepares for a fight unlike anything they’ve seen before.

Winner. Take. All.

G.I. JOE #11 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Lee Loughridge and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) delivers the high stakes showdown of Bludd vs. The Baroness!

Let’s take a closer look at where events land now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson opens up handling a sub-plot that’s been brewing for a while. The Hound/Clutch “odd couple” serves as a solid build for the Energon Universe. Seeing Transformers interacting more with the Joe side only opens doors for more possibilities. Risk and Mercer’s reactions hit as they both have to process what this all means. It concludes to a great transition to the main event.

Readers watch as the Baroness and Bludd slug it all out. The tone plays into the insanity of Bludd. This is very comfortable villainy. Bludd’s psychotic state leaves room for the Baroness to fight back. The dialogue is sharp. It resonates the brooding mood to a great climax. At this stage, the fight ends with a brutal twist. It serves as a reminder that the Joes are not always angels. Another element at hand is if the Baroness has truly bought in. The writing teases a few notions before moving to close. Readers see the final page changes events before bowing out. It steadies the ship as a certain war is brewing in the shadows. Another fantastic read.

Milana and Loughridge conclude their Joe time with a few strong takes. The Hound/Clutch story is gifted an exciting two page splash. It instantly sets off the combat as the unlikely trio of heroes step up. The pages carry the high-octane tempo into its’ next phase. This provides readers a easier entry into the books’ major lead story.

The fight between Baroness and Bludd doesn’t disappoint. There are plenty of fast-paced strikes. this compliments Bludd’s insane reactions to his mischief. Even as Raptor and Cover Girl get page time, nothing overtakes the Bludd feud. This ultimately comes to a graphic close. The full page image leaves no wonder as to who won. Even as the story tries showing Destro & Cobra Commander, readers will be buzzing about the ending blow. This works in the closing’s favor. The final page teases more events working in the shadows. Judging by the combat, these moments weren’t going to overtake the emotional fight of revenge. Its’ aftermath will be looming around the Energon Universe as it readies itself for the next phase of stories.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

The final round of Baroness vs. Bludd leaves its’ mark as the Energon Universe continues to expand its’ vision. Williamson’s writing leans heavy into action as more builds. Milana and Loughridge grow a fast pace with their strong art. With more on the horizon, the EU is firing on all cylinders. Don’t miss it.

G.I. JOE #10 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! The Baroness escapes to Paris for much needed space. Cover Girl has tagged along with COBRA still on the loose. Watching her parents from afar, the trip has turned very quickly.

A ghost from Baroness’ past has arrived looking for payback. His name is Major BLUDD. After kidnapping the two G.I. Joes, Bludd wants to pit them against each other. It looks like one of them has decided to play ball. Cover Girl has attacked the Baroness! So much for team work making the dream work!

G.I. JOE #10 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Lee Loughridge and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics continues its’ big action adventure!

Let’s take a closer look at where thing stand now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson firmly leads this story into some classic spy themes. Bludd’s over arrogance shines in his dialogue. His dialogue comes off a bit unhinged as he is about to grasp victory. It does cause some conflict with Raptor. Readers watch as the pair argue while the Joes have their fight to deal with. It results in a clever bait and switch in result. Perfect for the ever deceitful world of global espionage.

This theme carries back over to a few subplots building. One of which is Clutch’s discovery of Hound. Their covert partnership leads into very familiar places. The writing builds up a tense confrontation. It echoes the uneasiness of Transformers and humans. Williamson also adds a few more elements into play. Take nothing away from the main event. The Baroness storyline is rightfully running the show here. Both main storylines look to head towards their explosive showdowns. The only question remaining is who’s walking away from the bouts in one piece?

Milana and Loughridge play into the maniacal game of Bludd’s with the art. His reactions come across as unbalanced as expected. Having that much pent-up revenge takes a toll on anyone. It’s deflected by the Baroness’s determination to win. As the Joes fight for another round, the two page splash mixes in great fighting with the conflict. A half panel shuts down the action with Wooten’s lettering. It helps to switch gears for the other events of the book.

Clutch and Hound have their fair share of page time. The covert operation has a mysterious tag along watching in shadows. Readers watch as the mystery figure reveals himself. Clutch’s reaction says it all with more questions raised. It leads readers into more frantic scenarios. With the raised awareness of COBRA, how much would go unnoticed? This leads into an excellent final page. The full page image sends readers home anxiously awaiting what is coming next. This is textbook Energon Universe which always wins.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The Baroness’ past comes back in a deadly way as lines are crossed. Williamson gifts readers with a hefty does of action. Milana and Loughridge build up the ever-evolving world that houses G.I. Joe and Cobra. This will be a very tough wait for next issue once the final page hits.

SUPERMAN #28 (DC COMICS)

It hasn’t been an easy few months for the Man Of Steel. His “partnership” with Lex Luthor came crashing down. Lois Lane was depowered. Jimmy Olsen was nearly killed in the latest conflict. Doomsday has become the Time Trapper. Metropolis is picking up the pieces in its wake.

As crazy as this sounds: Those are the least of his problems. Darkseid has escaped into his own universe. Anyone who thinks he’s left his old world behind is delusional. Moves have been being made in the background. Now is the time for those plans to start coming to fruition.

SUPERMAN #28 by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher kicks off “The Legion Of Darkseid” storyline.

Let’s take a closer look at what is happening now.

SUPERMAN #28 by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson throws the world of Superman into a chaotic state for this issue. There is an eerie calm with the opening pages. The narration teases the sinister beings watching Supes go through his normal routine. This leads to a much needed trip back home. Seeing Big Blue back in Smallville provides many heartfelt moments. The dialogue with Martha Kent is grounded with care. It is a well-received boost. Unfortunately, the good times end here.

The introduction to the Absolute Legion is staged very well. Readers watch as the old emotions are taken into deep waters. Saturn Girl’s banter crafts an unsettling scene. The drama is taken to a few daring levels. Readers watch as the nightmare scenes weave with precision. There is little hope when the Legion strikes. Williamson throws in a few curves to offset events. Seeing Doomsday make a heroic action hasn’t set in. His involvement pushes for a very shocking ending. No one will expect to see who arrives on the final page. Buckle in for what will be one hell of a ride!

Mora returns for art duties and does what he does best. The two page splash welcomes readers to Smallville is an iconic way. Seeing Supes have subtle joy reminiscing over the past is a key bright spot. This mood carries into his conversation with Martha. Their reactions as they talk is as wholesome as one would expect. Locking in on the happier times only makes what happens next that much worse.

Saturn Girl’s debut is greeted with a deceptive half panel. The cover is blown when a simple world invokes an angry Superman. Mora captures this rage while the dialogue builds what’s next. Readers watch as a deadly attack is launched. An intense two page splash caps off events for this time period. The following dire full page image gives it a through exclamation point. Even as another attack gets its’ two page splash, nothing prepares for the final page. A full page image brings in someone who fans are not ready to see. Mora and Sanchez bring out the best elements of this story without question.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

The Absolute Universe hits Superman where it hurts the most in his latest chapter Williamson’s writing takes Clark into a troublesome world. Mora’s electric images craft an impressive look into what is in a possible future. There’s little time to process that as the present has its’ own weight to carry.

G.I. JOE #9 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

Some wounds never heal. The Baroness takes a leave from G.I. Joe after their COBRA encounter. Her reasons are very personal. She’s watching her parents have a sentimental meeting in Paris. Cover Girl has tagged along for the ride. Even in the shadows, Baroness can’t escape the spotlight.

An unexpected visitor has crashed the party. RAPTOR explodes onto the scene. The COBRA agent bears a message. It is from someone who has a grudge to pick with the dangerous Joe. MAJOR BLUDD is looking to make “an Eye for an Eye” a reality.

G.I. JOE #9 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Lee Loughridge and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics brings the action in a reunion of epic standing.

Let’s take a closer look at what transpires now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

“More than meets the eye” is synonymous with Transformers. For this chapter, the Baroness takes readers into a few different directions. Her simple plan to see her parents is quickly thwarted. Readers get a tense moment before a touch of clarity. The writing gives a quick breakdown of Raptor and why he factors into play. It is a solid set-up before the true threat finally arrives in Paris.

Bludd’s debut gives off a cold aura as his pursuits take hold. The banter between rivals keeps the unstable villain in the drivers seat. It transitions into a more darker reality. Williamson leans into the viciousness for the closing portion. Even with a few subplots getting time, this is Bludd’s chapter with reason. His endgame starts to evolve as he addresses his opposition. The result is a drastic move which throws motives into flux. It has never been said the Baroness was a saint. The closing page indicates those past sins may never be healed.

Milana and Loughridge set the bar high early in this chapter. The two page spalsh with Raptor’s attack drives home the ruthlessness forthcoming. It is followed up by a solid full page flashback. The page gives just enough to the readers on the current threat. This is especially helpful to new readers. It also serves as a pivot into a greater challenge at hand.

Readers watch as Bludd takes center stage via half page panel. His mannerisms conveys the sadistic nature of his fight. The following action panels leave little for chance. They are brutal and amplified by Wooton’s lettering. Few points rival Bludd’s attack. One does give a run for the money. An agents’ retelling of Starscream crafts an uneasy mood with its visuals. There is few “bright” spots for the good team in this chapter. This is clearly evident in the closing. Bludd’s moves stir up a breaking reaction in Baroness. His smirk sets up a very shocking final page. Readers will have many questions as they break down what just transpired. More than meets the eye indeed.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

Deception follows the Baroness everywhere she turns in this explosive chapter. Williamson cuts deeper into the past’s emotional wounds. The art team delivers on maniacal plans of Major Bludd with fantastic panels. Just when you think the picture comes into focus, the creative team changes the game!

SUPERMAN #27 (DC COMICS)

The Man of Steel is infected! With Red Kryptonite consuming him, Superman is loosing control. Marilyn Moonlight has arrived on the scene to stop him. Looming in the shadows is Lex Luthor. There is a bit of unfinished business with some enemies who have orchestrated attacks against him. Someone is not going to make it out unscathed from this one.

SUPERMAN #27 by Joshua Williamson, Sean Izaakse, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher brings down the house on the “Supercorp” team!

Let’s not wait any longer and dive into the action.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

If you have been reading this series since issue #1, this is a monster payoff issue. Anyone jumping in recently will still feel its’ after effects. Williamson opens events with the recently depowered Lois Lane. Readers don’t wait long for her “reunion” with an old friend. The guilt from her heroic actions start pouring with each line. It’s quickly upstaged by the main event. Considering it’s a raging Superman, the move is very understandable.

Moonlight’s injection into the storyline is met head on. Seeing Superman struggle for control immediately pushes events into a conflict. The writing hides the true catalyst until its’ time for the reveal. Readers see a new side of an old enemy. Willaimson keeps things close to vest for true motives. Once a play is made, it thrusts everything into short combat. The fallout picks up for the lack of fighting. It is a reset of sorts. Williamson puts a few plots back in a normal setting before going full speed into the close. With a build over the last few issues, the epilogue brings forth a Collison in the making since last year. Brace for the oncoming impact.

Art duties are once again split throughout this issue. Barrows opens up with a grounded look at Lane’s post heroic life. The near full image of Jimmy Olsen’s return lightens up the mood slightly. It ultimately gives way to a strong two page splash. Readers easily see Superman’s fight against the red rage. His mannerisms speak loudly as the battle starts.

Another two page splash ushers in the big fight for the chapter. Pharm and Graff’s plans come off as maniacal as they are. Luthor’s shadowy close-up is chilling as his words dictate the moment. Readers watch as the bold panels wrap up events rather fast. It leaves time to drop a classic Clark & Lois image flying before reality crashes back. The epilogue pages cement a darker future on the horizon. It is a solid parting shot as a new dangerous showdown is forthcoming.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The relationship between Superman and Lex Luthor takes another detour as rage sets in. Williamson sums up plot points from the beginning of his run. The art team construct a steady vision of a connection redefined. Brace for what is coming with the epilogue.

G.I. JOE #8 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

The toll that COBRA is taking on G.I. Joe is massive. After their initial Energon Universe encounter, there were losses. None greater than Rock N’ Roll. This has caused Duke to ramp up training for a team that clearly wasn’t ready. That mindset isn’t bought in by the whole team. The one leading this charge: The Baroness!

G.I. JOE #8 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Lee Loughridge and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) continues the fallout from the explosive first arc.

Let’s take a look at how the action plays out now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

No rest for the weary. Williamson opens up with a simple training exercise. The mood is instantly tense. It will give readers a double take before revealing its’ true nature. Duke’s message is very blunt and direct. He’s not taking the encounter with Cobra lightly. The dialogue remains with this same energy as he meets with Clutch. With recent events, their conversation is covering up quite a few things. It doesn’t take long before the spotlight swings to the Baroness.

At first glance, she just wants time away. Knowing how high tensions are, a break makes perfect sense. Williamson conveys the problems tied into the break. Even when she arrives at her destination, it isn’t without strings. Readers watch as the real reason comes into focus. The moment is bittersweet as events transpire. It wouldn’t be G.I. Joe without some action. The closing moments bring forth a new challenge that is a lock for fireworks.

Milana and Loughridge kick things off with a feverish pace. The full page image of Baroness in the rafters kickstarts the intense drill. There is a small touch of fun thrown in the serious business at hand. The mood changes completely as Duke enters the scene. Readers watch as his driven persona jumps off panel. It complements the Cobra segway. Both sides have similar yet different stances. In the end, this is all about the Baroness defying orders.

Her conversation with Duke transitions into a new look for the character (& her companion). The art flourishes when the setting becomes Paris. Baroness’s attempts for a peaceful break speaks of a deeper meaning. Her revelation to her wanting a break connects with the readers. The panels give way to the terrifying close. Wooton’s lettering leads the charge into another debut. The full page image of a classic character sets events in motion to a showdown in waiting. It’s another day at the office for one of comic’s best series.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

You can take the Joe out of action, but never the action out of the Joe. Williamson shows a new side of the Baroness with the writing. Milana, Loughridge & Wooton take readers on a captivating journey via the art. There’s never a question on the high level quality you get with this series.

SUPERMAN #26 (DC COMICS)

Lois Lane - depowered! Lex Luthor - Back behind bars! Mercy Graves crosses a line she can’t walk back! The fate of SuperCorp - Unknown! How does the Man of Steel handle these events? Factor in something has caused his rage to go out of control and the easy answer is “Not Well”.

SUPERMAN #26 by Joshua Williamson, Sean Izaakse, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher picks up the pieces of the milestone anniversary issue.

Let’s see if and how anyone is still standing!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson drives an emotional rollercoaster this chapter. Lena Luthor’s confrontation with her dad covers many topics. Seeing a possible redemption disappear burns any hope for a happy father-daughter bond. The writing pours with Lena’s rage. This boils over to her talk with Mercy Graves. There is no escaping her wrath. It is quite the difference from the somber tone with Lois Lane.

After losing her powers, the mood is that of grieving. Williamson covers up the true feelings until Lois breaks. This becomes a driving point when Supes confronts Lex. Knowing his back is against the wall, Luthor dangles possibilities. What happens next is a response to a deep played seed of the run. Readers have previous moments sprinkled in but none impactful like this event. It leads to an overall strong conclusion with many options left open.

Art duties are split throughout this issue. The initial tease of events by Barrows sets a very high bar. Seeing Superman unleashed via two page splash teases a wild scene. The emotions run high when Lena confronts her dad. Readers watch the many feelings of anger and sadness emerge. Even when page time turns to Lois Lane, there is a sense of hidden grief that can’t be denied.

The issue also features some side plots that can’t be ignored. Zod’s interlude teases a major problem in the future. The same can be said for Time Trapper and the Absolute LOSH. Ultimately, events come back to Lex and Clark. Once the rage is unleashed, a mid-page image unlocks the fury. This spills into a confrontation of masterminds via near full image. One more guest star makes a dramatic debut. Another great full page welcomes another combustible element into an already unstable situation.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Superman’s rage cannot be contained as his world comes down around him. Williamson’s writing brings out an intense fallout. The art team navigates through a wide cast of characters leading to an explosive conclusion. How things go from here is anyone’s guess.

GI JOE #7 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

The dust has barely settled after Duke and Cobra Commander’s explosive encounter. Both sides were dealt blows as the fight for freedom ramps up. It also appears there is more than meets the eyes for the elite fighting unit’s future. One might think this would be a good rest moment. If so, you don’t know G.I. JOE!

G.I. JOE #7 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Lee Loughridge and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) ushers in some fan-favorites as the Night Force takes shape!

Let’s take a closer look at how they make their mark!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson ushers in the Night Force era with a high-octane chapter. Beach Head is instantly established for new readers. The narration walks through the complexity of his mission. It creates much suspense as the Joe works behind enemy lines. Another factor of this mission is the violence isn’t sugar-coated. How Beach head disposes of two guards leaves little to the imagination. This mood carries events onward in this story.

Even with the deck stacked against him, the writing never defeat set in. Readers are thrown into a chaotic brawl. Williamson keeps up a high pace. This gets elevated even higher when more guests crash the party. Long-time Joe fans will applaud with who shows up. Their debut is upstaged by a COBRA staple. His entrance teases more to come. In the end, it’s all centered back to Beach Head’s acquisition. The reveal looks to even a playing field which hasn’t played nice in recent events.

Milana and Loughridge step in for art duties. They immediately turn the excitement on and never slow down. The four panel build lets Beach Head explode on the pages. His full page action image drops an exclamation point. Readers see the dirty deeds done on his extraction mission. It is only the tip of a deadly iceberg.

The covert mission pauses the action just enough before ramping it back up. The next conflict begins with a strong mid page panel. Pacing keeps everything moving fast and furious. There’s plenty of big action flowing on these pages. It comes to an even more shocking close. The COBRA favorite makes a big statement via half page image. This pushes all events to the close. The final page leaves readers with many question as business has definitely picked up.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The evolution of Freedom’s fight hits a bullseye with a new force making their debut. Williamson delivers on the drama and action with the writing. Milena and Loughridge set the stage with brutal & thrilling imagery. This series keeps changing the stat quo of the iconic story with each electrifying chapter.

G.I. JOE #6 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

It has all come down to this. COBRA has made their presence felt. Using dangerous technology, the terrorist organization struck without warning. The elite fighting force known as G.I. JOE was dealt a crushing blow. Rock N’ Roll was killed in the line of duty. This broke the heart, but not the spirit of the team.

Duke has rallied the troops into a full-on assault. Their initial play wound up delivering them into the belly of the serpent beast. By sheer luck, Duke and company turned the tables on the COBRA victory. Before Cobra Commander can attempt another move, Duke is right in his face poised to get some revenge!

G.I. JOE #6 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) gives fans the showdown they have all been waiting for!

Let’s not wait another minute & dive into the action!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

To say this issue had a “big fight feel” is a vast understatement. Williamson takes readers into an intense meeting of good vs. evil. The parallels between DUKE & COBRA COMMANDER are eerily similar. As the dialogue from Commander dances around the common themes, it is countered by Duke’s rage. This is where the common ground gives way. Commander makes his play. The fate of Washington D.C. is in immediate danger. Where things go from here is into a whole extra gear.

The action blazes onto the page. Williamson structures these pages with well timed breaks. This allows the main event to continue to build. It gives enough moments where the Joe team/Destro event doesn’t feel forced. This leads into the explosive conflict end. Readers can’t deny the adrenaline push as each move is amplified. The conclusion is set up perfectly. Considering it is a first round, it nails the landing. Within the closing pages, more seeds are planted involving the new stat quo. Nothing will be a greater shock than the final page. If there was ever a mic drop moment, Williamson hits it at the key point. There’s no way readers can’t be amped up after this chapter.

Reilly and Bellaire understand the stakes with the art. The build has pushed both faction leaders into their collision course. A fantastic two page spread brings Duke & Commander’s paths into the spotlight. This pushes the art into the combustible moment readers have wanted. Duke’s grittiness is equally matched by the Commander’s confidence. Their back and forth jabs are spilt with great panels. It fuels the rest of the chapter into a fast paced throwdown.

The Joes/Destro segway is brief but hits the needed marks. Reilly hones in on Destro’s disbelief challenged by The Baroness’ bravery. Their reactions maximize their page time. Short but effective. It is well timed considering the other match unfolding. There’s no shortage of blunt, brutal action with Duke and Commander. It comes to a strong, but subtle conclusion. This leads into some reflective closing images. A few panels will pop more than others due to the surprises. None greater than the final page. The full page image changes the game for the Joes as their next phase seems to have evolved.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5/10

Two roads converge with bullets and bravery in this phenomenal chapter. Williamson orchestrates organized chaos with the wild fighting stages. Reilly, Bellaire and Wooton expose the beginnings of a true “fight forever” with stunning imagery. This book delivers on many levels and never disappoints!

SUMMER OF SUPERMAN SPECIAL #1 (DC COMICS)

The summer of 2025 is going to be a super one! James Gunn is unveiling the long anticipated “Superman” film in July. Movies aren’t the only fandom affected by the Man Of Steel. DC Comics has their Superman line primed and ready to maintain the excitement. It all starts with a wedding of super proportions!

SUMMER OF SUPERMAN SPECIAL #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Slott,
Joshua Williamson, Jorge Jiménez, Belén Ortega, Dan Mora & Dave Sharpe kicks off the next phase of Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow!

Let’s take a closer look at what’s coming up!

SUMMER OF SUPERMAN SPECIAL #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Slott,
Joshua Williamson, Jorge Jiménez, Belén Ortega, Dan Mora & Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With a wedding between John Henry Irons and Lana Lang taking place, Clark Kent is thrown a few challenges. This comes via three chapters. Waid takes the lead and throwsback to young Clark and Lana. It gives readers a sense of Clark’s feelings towards his first love. The writing keeps this theme going while he deals with a threat. Seeing young Clark rationalize these emotions only strengthens what’s yet to come.

Slott makes his Superman entrance with a balanced helping of action and drama. The present day brings John and Lana’s wedding. In typical fashion, if something can go wrong, it will. For this day, it’s a threat from the past. The writing lends itself to establish two conflicts. Superman handles the rematch of the past. The “Super Family” deals with some (un)natural disasters. All points drive towards a strong conclusion. Its’ fallout sets a key direction in motion. Fans also get a happy ending before the final chapter upsets everything.

Williamson comes in for the definitive close. The opening of his chapter is all wedding bliss. Clark’s feeling of joy come to the spotlight. It is a solid place to end the happy moments before investigating his recent problems. The writhing breaks down his recurring foe is a very presentable fashion. Nothing is tipped off too much for the audience. This leads to a few easter eggs before the shocking ending. At this stage, another voice emerges from the shadows. Everything fans might have thought is flipped. Once the reveal of the voice is shown, all bets are off from what’s coming next.

Jiménez takes the wheel for the majority of the book. The opening captures the innocence of the young teens. Clark’s awkwardness bounces off Lana’s genuine demeanor. This rolls into a young Superboy in action via a full page shot. The action travels into a sequence of time displaced full pages. Each carry visions of what’s to come. One in particular shakes up the young hero. It leads events back to his present time with a different path taken. The art bridges the gap from past to present with a looming feel on uncertainity.

Once in the present, Jiménez lets round two start with a bang. The future threat gets a half page welcome. It is countered with a new full page image of Clark and Lois leading the charge into action. Readers watch as the two page splashes take hold. They ramp up the excitement before coming back down to Earth in its’ close.

Chapter three (with Ortega finishing) focuses more on the Wedding reactions before speeding into the final conflict. It transitions magnificently to the final showdown. A full page image passes the Epilogue duties to Dan Mora. Once here, readers have a monster secret revealed in an intense final full page. After witnessing that, readers had better prepare for an even greater storm on the horizon.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Two timelines bring together two hearts as the Summer of Superman begins with an excellent start. The writing takes readers into the past, present and future of Clark Kent with can’t miss chapters. Jiménez constructs lights out panels with the art. Mora’s Epilogue will be the talk of NCBD so make sure you don’t miss what’s unfolding here!
