GI JOE #7 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

The dust has barely settled after Duke and Cobra Commander’s explosive encounter. Both sides were dealt blows as the fight for freedom ramps up. It also appears there is more than meets the eyes for the elite fighting unit’s future. One might think this would be a good rest moment. If so, you don’t know G.I. JOE!

G.I. JOE #7 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Lee Loughridge and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) ushers in some fan-favorites as the Night Force takes shape!

Let’s take a closer look at how they make their mark!

Williamson ushers in the Night Force era with a high-octane chapter. Beach Head is instantly established for new readers. The narration walks through the complexity of his mission. It creates much suspense as the Joe works behind enemy lines. Another factor of this mission is the violence isn’t sugar-coated. How Beach head disposes of two guards leaves little to the imagination. This mood carries events onward in this story.

Even with the deck stacked against him, the writing never defeat set in. Readers are thrown into a chaotic brawl. Williamson keeps up a high pace. This gets elevated even higher when more guests crash the party. Long-time Joe fans will applaud with who shows up. Their debut is upstaged by a COBRA staple. His entrance teases more to come. In the end, it’s all centered back to Beach Head’s acquisition. The reveal looks to even a playing field which hasn’t played nice in recent events.

Milana and Loughridge step in for art duties. They immediately turn the excitement on and never slow down. The four panel build lets Beach Head explode on the pages. His full page action image drops an exclamation point. Readers see the dirty deeds done on his extraction mission. It is only the tip of a deadly iceberg.

The covert mission pauses the action just enough before ramping it back up. The next conflict begins with a strong mid page panel. Pacing keeps everything moving fast and furious. There’s plenty of big action flowing on these pages. It comes to an even more shocking close. The COBRA favorite makes a big statement via half page image. This pushes all events to the close. The final page leaves readers with many question as business has definitely picked up.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The evolution of Freedom’s fight hits a bullseye with a new force making their debut. Williamson delivers on the drama and action with the writing. Milena and Loughridge set the stage with brutal & thrilling imagery. This series keeps changing the stat quo of the iconic story with each electrifying chapter.
