*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Hama starts setting up the next phase of points with much intrigue behind it. The injection of a defecting family offers up some possibilities. Knowing what the stakes are here opens a risky play. Readers know this is more dangerous with a new leader running the show in Destro.

SECRET SIX #3 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands (DC COMICS) continues on with the hunt for Amanda Waller.

Let’s take a closer look to see where events stand now.

SECRET SIX #3 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Maines throws a fun curveball in the re-appearance of Checkmate. The long standing DC covert organization gets a fresh cover while moving in shadows. Their manipulation of a senator show business is back but not without cost. Knowing how Waller’s involvement is such a critical factor raises stakes even higher. Mix that with the emotional toll of the “heroes” and it’s a powder keg ready to explode.

Sides are clearly being taken as Deadshot and Dreamer work their angles in the scenes. Lawton has had the most experience with Waller. The dialogue reflects that past with an uncertain future. His interactions with Catman carry the same sense. Dreamer’s confessions concerning Waller only drives a larger wedge between members. This all comes to a head with the closing act. Pacing helps kick events into gear. It also provides a surprise reveal as their game of cat and mouse just got more extreme.

Segovia and Beredo start the party with a full page image of the club. It’s a pace change from the views form Washington. Lurking in the shadows are the Six. Each panel fuels more uneasiness. The art throws a fun curve in as they change into their nightlife wear. It’s a calm moment before the drama ramps up.

The panels focus on the interactions between the teams. There is much tension between Deadshot and Catman. It falls short in comparison to the groups major issues. Jay and Nia’s distrust shines again in this chapter. Even with a quick pause, it doesn’t take long to force the action. Events start revealing the true nature in the club. It all boils down to a shocking full final page. The chapter closes with a great cliffhanger to lead into a more exciting path next go around.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

The Six take it to the club in their hunt for Amanda Waller. Maines’ writing keeps this group walking a tightrope. Segovia and Beredo play into the emotional damage with their art. Judging by the last page, time may be up for the group before they even start.

BLACK CANARY: BEST OF THE BEST #6 (DC COMICS)

To the winner goes the spoils. Dinah Lance has dug deep to try winning a fight. Normally, this would be enough to secure victory. This is anything but a normal fight. Lady Shiva is her opponent. The prize is being crowned “The Best of The Best”. Dinah struggles to focus on the bout when her mother’s life hangs in the balance. What will weigh out when the bell ring in the final round?

BLACK CANARY: BEST OF THE BEST #6 by Tom King, Ryan Sook, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles doesn’t leave t in the hands of the judges for the finale.

Let’s take a deeper dive & see who claims victory!

BLACK CANARY: BEST OF THE BEST #6 by Tom King, Ryan Sook, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The fight lives up to its’ top billing on the marquee. Through King’s writing, readers witness a heavy combo of emotions connect. The story has never truly been Dinah vs Shiva. It has been overtaken by Dinah wrestling with her mother’s legacy. As she is dying, the weight finally breaks with Canary. Being thrown a Faustian deal by Vandal Savage keeps readers wondering what will be the ultimate outcome.

A decision like this doesn’t come easy. King gives Dinah a powerful moment “talking with her mother” about options. The vulnerability on display is an instant knockout. It gives such an insight into Dinah’s mind as she forces herself to make a choice. This becomes a driving force in the ultimate round. There is no way readers can’t get wrapped up into the pinnacle moments. Once her choice is made, there is no turning back. It leads into a bittersweet close. There’s a certain sense of peace with the call made which sends readers home on solid ground. Excellent work with this story.

Sook and Stewart immediately give this moment the “big fight feel” it deserves. Seeing the range of characters locked in adds to the drama. Events shift back to the hospital before the bell rings. The full page image of Dinah crying screams the painful experience unfolding. Vandal Savage’s injection into this sequence brings out a subtle break with jarring humor. It leaves the hospital in a fitting transition before the next round commences.

The full page corner mirroring image starts off the round perfectly. There is a certain level of respect built between both. The nine panel page gives off enough of this mood. It ultimately gives way to Dinah’s “talk”. How Dinah is processing everything is pouring with changes. Initially calm to boiling with rage, the art covers it all. It all ties back to the fight and two strong full page images. Sook has delivered on the action and amped it up for the finale.

As powerful of those pieces are, a half page one steals the show. This pushes events to its’ closing. Readers watch as the commentary team sends them off with style and a smile.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

What lies inside a fighter’s heart? Tom King and Ryan Sook answer that question with an epic final. King’s writing brings out the deep struggles inside of Black Canary. The art delivers on big action and even larger drama. It’s a perfect blend that doesn’t need a judge’s decision to claim victory.

Let’s take a closer look at how this introduction fares.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #7 by Jason Aaron, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Aaron ushers in a frightening terror onto the new landscape. The opening sequence wastes little time in showing a glimpse of the horror awaiting. Readers watch as the precision attack decimates the Omega Men’s surge. Once in full frame, Brainiac is easily different than his predecessor. The writing plays into the unhinged personality as the backstory begins.

It is a take that plays a game with the mental stability of the cold genius. Aaron gives a tragic spin while slow rolling the drama. Brainiac’s evolution is not without consequence. As truths surface, the damage done is immense. The fallout leaves the audience with a clear picture of madness. Aaron moves Brainiac’s awakening to a disturbing conclusion. Knowing what he’s done in little time, the overwhelming sense of danger grows. The issue ends on a solid point with a familiar destination locked in its sights. How Krypton’s last son handles this will be something to watch.

Di Giandomenico returns for art duties for this chapter. The initial attack by the Omega Men reflects a horror movie. There is no shying away from the brutality on display. Even where one soldier sees his own bones, the art holds nothing back. this leads into a full page image of Brainiac in his psychotic glory. The design is very unique in presentation. It teases a backstory that paints quite a picture.

The flashback portions show a young artificial life with optimism. Panels foreshadow how that hope dimmers with each page. Readers watch as the slow slip of reality takes shape. The art teams shows how weathered Brainiac has become before a truth sinks in. Once at this stage, events have left him with a new sense of beginning. A close-up of a smile speaks volumes. This leads into the final pages. After ascending his role, the issue brings the villain full circle. A full page panel shows the broken villain in his glory. The art ends with a solid closing panel. The close-up and chilling words send readers into an unknown future as a new evil has formed.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The Absolute Universe welcomes a disturbed version of Brainiac into Superman’s world. Arron’s haunting story gives a shocking take on the emotionless villain. Di Giandomenico and the art team takes readers into the maddening visuals head-on. Forget any preconceived notions. This is a much more unstable threat than Superman has ever faced. Fans will want to be here for it!

We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us #2 by Matthew Rosenberg, Stefano Landini, Jason Wordie, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou continues its “spy-fi” adventure.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s unfolding now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Rosenberg continues to orchestrate a very multi-layered saga. Opening with a flashback sequence connects a high stakes feel with readers. The new cast of characters elude to the deeper levels becoming exposed. A few get a fair amount of page time to start their journeys. As more comes to light about Dr. Alderman, the world of Annalise becomes thrown into a chaotic state. This leads into a thrilling part of the book.

Seeing Annalise and her robot navigate through intruders provides glimpses of a dark future. There are no punches pulled. Rosenberg sprinkles in some fun moments to keep things leveled out. It cushions the blow of Annalise’s dire discovery. This throws everything into a frantic state. Readers watch as there is more heart aching moments adding up on the young 13 year old. When the smoke clears, the closing pages lead into another unstable path. A new threat stands before readers to welcome them to the next phase of this ever-engaging tale.

Landini and Wordie open up with a jarring full page image. The aftermath of the initial attack makes an immediate impact on readers. This is followed up with a special grid panel set-up for new characters. It brings out the best of their conversation, pushing Dante’s fallout higher. Their close ups tease the many personalities now involved. It is brief but provides a steady gap to regroup on Annalise and company.

The brutality of the situation never is held back. Readers watch as the robot handles would be assailants with no remorse. Annalise’s reactions vary in the midst of searching for her father. A close up of her crying eyes speaks louder than any dialogue when the time hits. The escape from the island is capped off with a half page image. This jumpstarts events into the closing pages. The ending shot ushers in a new direction and antagonist for Annalise to deal with. Artwork continues to be a strong base for this story to grow from.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The end of Dr. Dante Alderman lands a devastating blow onto his daughter’s survival in this latest chapter. Rosenberg keeps working the winning combination of drama and danger via the writing. Landini and company give this story show-stealing visuals at every turn. This series carves its’ own niche at the comic shops that simply cannot be ignored.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #6 (DC COMICS) by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Willie Schubert (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Segura brings a solid conclusion to Montoya’s final stand. Her latest challenge has not been just against Henshaw. It has been her facing her demons and finding herself along the way. After being discarded by Henshaw, the writing takes Montoya on one final confrontation with her past. It poses a unique perspective pushing the hero towards the final battle.

On the other end, Henshaw’s blind confidence oozes like a true villain. The writing cats him in many traditional villain roles. It’s reflected in the dialogue with Eradicator. Readers watch as their paths come together with a mixed result closing. Their final moments of face-off conclude very quickly. It concedes to the real main event. The dialogue shows Montoya’s acceptance and growth. This spirals into the parting moments which leave many possibilities.

Tormey and Fajardo jr. open the chapter with a stunning full page panel. Montoya falling through space indicates the dire situation she’s in. The flashback panels strengthen her inner turmoil heading into a desperate attack. In comparison, Henshaw’s reactions mirror the dastardly villains of yesteryear. As much as those panels build up the tension, this all comes down to Montoya’s coming to terms with herself.

A unique full page unveils Montoya’s last attempts to find her motivation. This becomes the catalyst to close. Henshaw’s plans come into focus via another full page image. Readers can easily see how the pieces are set to win or go home. The action sequence at this stage are brief. They complete this portion of events before giving way to the fallout. Once here, the emotions start pouring out of Montoya. It leaves readers with a possible vision of the future which is nothing but win.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

The last stand of Renee Montoya concludes on steady ground in its closing chapter. Segura’s writing leans into the personal pressures of the Question. THE NEW GODS #5 (DC COMICS)

War has come to New Genesis’ front door! The Nyctari are making their impression felt in the void of Darkseid. Complicating matters more is a New God has appeared on Earth, Is Kamal a savior or destroyer? High-Father isn’t taking any chances.

He has dispatched Orion to dispose of the child. Mister Miracle and Big Barda are the only ones standing in Orion’s path. With two conflicts happening at once, there is plenty of drama to go around for Jack Kirby’s Fourth World characters.

The New Gods #5 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Andrew MacLean, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano ramps up the danger with an all new chapter.

Let’s see how the latest installment plays out.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ram V. takes this chapter into a dire direction. The opening follows Lightray as he poses a question about mortality. His inquiry covers many different answers. One theme is very clear. Even the most powerful do not understand Death. The writing plays this into a driving factor of the chapter. It is fitting with one God dying, a new one appears to take its place.

Once the story jump back into present time, it starts finding its path. The battle of New Genesis has a regal feel. Seeing Izaya take his attack to the Nyctari kickstarts a desperate effort. The result is one that shakes the foundation of the New Gods to its core. It upstages the fight between Orion and the Frees, which is very brief. Their faceoff teases more to come next issue with guests.

For this round, it belongs to a valiant sacrifice in vain. Readers watch as all roads start coming together with a philosophical question leading the way. Where this all leads is up in the air. In the meantime, the forthcoming reunion will be one not to miss.

MacLean opens the chapter with a distinct look at Lightray’s questioning. The reactions of each God is very telling. This ultimately leads into a conversation with someone who has the answer. A near half page image gives some clues. It also serves up a solid homage to Kirby’s vision before heading back to the present.

Once here, Cagle takes over. Izaya’s entrance is given an epic image. Napolitano’s lettering sells the scene as even greater than expected. This leads to a stoic reaction of Izaya striking one of his attackers. The powerful blow starts up a series of conflicts. The two page splash of Orion’s fight gives a solid break from the war on New Genesis. It is fleeting as attention goes back to Izaya.

The potential fatal blow is diverted in a strong half page image. Readers watch as the noble sacrifice proves to be a much needed wake-up call. It leads Izaya’s path back to Earth. Judging by who shows up the last page, the full image tips off there may not be a warm welcome. Great work as always.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

A simple question spawns a tragic loss for New Genesis. Ram V. puts deeper elements into the wartime battle with the writing. MacLean’s throwback pages add more momentum for Cagle and companies present day images. With all signs leading to Earth, the New Gods shouldn’t expect a warm welcome anytime soon.

POP KILL #2 BY Jimmy Palmiotti & Dave Johnson, Juan Santacruz, Brian Reber and Sean Konot (Mad Cave Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

There’s no shortage of action going down in this series. The writing team sets events up over a dinner date between Plye and Deluxe. It doesn’t take long for the spy life to catch up with the pair. There is a fantastic sequence as they try escaping the dangers at the front door. Pyle comes across as a suave but crass agent. His dialogue with Dina will bring a laugh along with the traditional spy themes. Only when the action pauses does the readers get some character depth.

Readers see a small glimpse into Pyle’s past. It gives some dimension to his business character. The moment allows for the pause to finish before heading to close. Deluxe takes action which doesn’t sit well. The fallout pushes for a timely finish. Readers get one more big laugh before concluding with a solid landing. Like any great spy story, the team leaves the audience wanting more.

Santacruz and Reber go for a calm start with Pyle’s dinner date. The moment plays off the hidden angle Pyle is pitching. It doesn’t take long for the bullets to start flying. A nine page escape from Dina’s place kicks off with a bang. Readers watch as Konot’s lettering takes stage with all the gunfire filling the pages. Events climax when Bahram shows up. The fight is a masterful run of knives and punches. It’s a fun ride while it lasts.

In its wake is more peaceful images. A full page shot of Pyle’s safehouse leads into a darker period. The flashback sequence of Goro’s torture of Pyle leaves quite the impression. The chilling method in which Pyle watches his lover die exemplifies his line of work. This pushes events into its closing pages. The art team mix in a great use of sticky notes before the final shot. It is a small panel that conveys this tale is only just beginning.

WE'RE TAKING EVERYONE DOWN WITH US #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Annalise is a 13yr old who’s just trying to live a normal life. Define normal when your dad is a mad-scientist. Your “friends” are robots. Plus, who’s living in the basement? If this doesn’t sell you enough, the creative team behind Image Comics next big thing will!

We're Taking Everyone Down With Us #1 by Matthew Rosenberg, Stefano Landini, Jason Wordie, Roman Titov and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou brings “Spy-Fi” to the masses with its’ debut chapter.

Let’s not wait any longer and break this issue down!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Talk about a debut issue! Rosenberg hits the ground running and never looks back. Annalise starts by trying to play Hide And Seek with a robot. As quirky as that sounds, it works to make tempo. The dialogue hits as Annalise just wants time with her dad, Dr. Dante Alderman. Readers watch as the mood shifts to a more grounded level. Disappointment fills Annalise’s voice. Her dad tries spinning out of this. The result is a drastic detour of events.

A simple game reveals more intrigue as Annalise encounters a stranger. The conversation leads to more danger. Readers see as there is MUCH more going on with Annalise’s father. The writing keeps changing styles. This adds more layers on an already engaging tale. Through it all, this is centered around Annalise and her dad. Rosenberg weaves other elements in-between the panels.

Even an agent’s “evening plans” provide some adult humor before catapulting to the close. In mere moments, everything changes again. The chapter closes with an incredible cliffhanger that will have readers locked and loaded. Rosenberg has something special with this one!

Landini (along with Titov and Wordie) make a visually stunning opening chapter. The beginning game shines with the coloring. They create a retro-esque mood as Annalise challenges the robot. It defers to the more cemented backdrop of her father in his lab. There are a few great panels in this mix. One that stands out is Annalise looking at her dad through a chemical glass. Their conversation carries some gravity with it. The use of small panels help move this portion along to its game-changing moment.

The discovery in the basement is given a shocking full page. Its’ resolution mirrors the tense landscape Annalise has just walked into. Readers watch as her dad’s true nature creeps to the forefront. The panels are overflowing with his anger. This gets flipped upside down when Dr. Dante sees Annalise.

Landini and company cover all bases there. After the stop to see Agent Rook, evens race to the end. A two page spread sends everything on its’ axis. If that wasn’t enough, the final page crushes everything. There will be many questions coming form this series. I can’t wait to see what the answers will be.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

Combining elements of Sci-Fi, espionage and family dynamics, Annalise’s journey doesn’t struggle to balance its’ act. Rosenberg’s writing leaps into many themes without losing the audience. Landini and the team keep a distinctive look with superb visuals. Packing so much style and storytelling, readers are absolutely going to be blown away by this!

THE NEW GODS #4 (DC COMICS)

On Earth, the powers of a god hide inside a young child. Is this child a savior or harbinger for death? This has drawn attention from HighFather. He sends Orion to deal with this potential threat. Mister Miracle and Big Barda seek to protect this child from the vicious warrior.

With Apokolips in a power void, the Nyctari strike. Their fight now shifts to New Genesis. Is this child a savior or harbinger for death? Suffice to say, there’s many moving parts involving Jack Kirby’s legendary characters.

The New Gods #4 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Bernard Chang, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano prepare for battle with their latest chapter.

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The plight of the Gods turns to violence for the majority of this chapter. Ram V. goes in on the frustrations of High-Father. The flashback sequence foreshadows the impending attack from the Nyctari. It shows the readers a very different HighFather than we’ve seen in this series. There is no long wait for business to pick up with conflict. One character stands head and shoulders amongst most in this sequence. Shadowfall steals this portion with a breakout moment of this chapter.

Back on Earth, the Frees have their hands full on many fronts. Protecting the child from humans is one thing. Stopping Orion is a whole other issue. There’s plenty to enjoy with this scrap. Its’ conclusion (for now) executes another domino to fall. This runs side-by-side with the battle of New Genesis. Heading into the closing act, Ram V. twists more burdens onto HighFather’s group. Once the final page appears, choices are made that can’t be taken back. The writing reflects the deep thought made for the heavy choice. It’s a strong finish until the battle resumes next chapter.

Chang takes the flashback staple for this issue. The panels burst with optimism. Seeing Highfather in an almost jovial state is a far cry from the present. Once the time jump happens with Cagle and company, war has been declared. Nyctari start with a near full page image. They had met and defeated by Shadowfall’s presence. The art gives her a distinct showcase of skill. It’s capped off by a superb full page image.

Earth’s battle is much smaller in comparison. Big Barda handling human attacks carries a strong sense to it. The difference between her and Mister Miracle’s more playful demeanor is very clear. Readers watch as he attempts to diffuse the tension. This disappears once Orion appears via half page image. Their action scenes pop due to Napolitano’s lettering.

Events shift back to New Genesis for a few epic pages. Cagle’ art truly crafts the brutality of war. It also leaves readers with a firm landing spot. Highfather makes a call that a half page image screams out. This whole issue had excellent art that readers will rave about.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

New Genesis is attacked! The New Gods unleash their wrath on the Nyctari but is it enough? Ram V.’s writing sets a fast pace driven by action. The mesmerizing art on display from Cagle and company will floor readers. That chapter will be one fans will be talking about.

ABSOLUTE FLASH #1 (DC COMICS)

The Absolute Universe has taken comics by storm! Darkseid has left the DCU. In his wake, a darker version of the universe is left. Readers have seen the trinity of DC make their debuts. Versions of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are nothing like fans have seen. Their adventures have been selling big numbers at the LCS.

Now the second wave of heroes make their debuts. Leading the pack is the fastest man alive. Don’t blink.

ABSOLUTE FLASH #1 by Jeff Lemire, Nick Robles, Adriano Lucas and Tom Napolitano presents an all new saga of speed and superheroics.

Let’s not wait another second & dive into the chapter.

ABSOLUTE FLASH #1 by Jeff Lemire, Nick Robles, Adriano Lucas and Tom Napolitano (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lemire dives into the relationship between Wally West and Barry Allen to reset their narrative. Keeping Wally's situation at arms length adds to the ever evolving drama. The writing portrays him as a loner searching for something. It's far from the happier version of West we've seen in the comics.

For doing an alternate version, this mystique works. The same can be said for Barry Allen. Allen comes off as a surrogate father in moments. Even though he works with Wally's dad, Allen genuinely shows concern for the wayward teen. Can the same be said for Wally's dad? He pushes more of a "tough love" which misses the mark.

The issue does its' fair share of time jumping. It is always a difficult challenge to pull this off without losing something. Lemire blends the pacing extremely well that this issue flows through segments.

Even in the present, a certain group gets a proper reset. It adds more to the combustible element of Wally and his dad. This pushes everything into the close. Lemire puts some tricks out to throw everything in flux. The result is a solid mystery that has many miles left to run.

Robles and Lucas kick events off with a vibrant two page splash. It's loud, bold and unapologetically Flash. Events start slowing down to unveil the worry of West. Being alone in his mind, the images depict his search for belonging. Project Olympus gets a two page reveal. Things have come a long way since lightning in the crime lab twice.

At this stage, Napolitano's lettering maneuvers readers through the time jumps. This also gives way for Wally's freedom to be put to the test. A full page image brings those familiar faces mentioned previously in style. The art team gives proper time to focus on the West family dynamic before speeding to the end.

It takes two pages to truly bring out the impact of West' ill-fated choice. This thrusts his life into a full page shocking close. Readers are complimented with a fun two page epilogue before running to next issue. It leaves much for fans to ponder before revving up the engines next time.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Is speed absolute? Judging by the latest addition to the DC new universe, the answer is yes. Lemire's writing brings out a conflicted lead to take the baton and run. Robles, Lucas and Napolitano keep the energy high with the electric art images. This series is firing on all gears with much left in the tank.

THE HIVE #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

The line between biology and crimeology blur with Image Comics’ latest hit series. Mason Shaw is drawn into a world he’s not ready for. Queen Shay demands complete control. When there’s a mutiny forming, the repercussions will be deadly.

THE HIVE #2 by A. J. Lieberman, Mike Henderson, and Inaki Azpiazu dives further into the crime drama with a new gritty chapter.

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now.

THE HIVE #2 by A. J. Lieberman, Mike Henderson, and Inaki Azpiazu (IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lieberman does the slow play to dig into Shay’s hold over the hive. The writing never escapes its gritty demeanor. This all stems off the robbery and murder of security guards. The attack creates a ripple effect that’s bad for business. Shay’s focus move back to retaining control when doubts start creeping in. Readers watch as the payoff becomes a diversion to take the heat off the organization. It appears the plan might backfire in this stage as the last page dictates.

As for Shaw, his role in this equation becomes a touch more clearer. The writing starts unveiling the biological methods used. This comes to light when Shaw finally meets the Queen. Readers get some key info before events shift back to Shay’s long game. At times, it moves very quick to fully nail its’ mark. There’s still enough intrigue that isn’t lost in the shuffling.

Henderson drops another gem with the art. The opening pages in the dark swamp sets a brooding tempo. It matches the same mood of Ash and Benji’s story portion. There’s a sense of relief with the Beekeeper’s diagnosis. It appears short lived when an examiner starts diving into Quinn. Knowing how the tampering plays out, it draws more heat on a growing fire.

Shaw’s encounter with the Queen carries a sense of uneasiness. The art reflects the power play being enforced by the Queen. It also unveils a surprising factor into their dynamic. Readers can get the understanding of Shay’s set-up. It connects enough before the story jumps to a show of force at a business meeting. A solid action sequence puts Shay’s plans in motion. This all rolls over into the final page. A near full page image indicates the business is drawing more attention than meets the eye.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The sophomore chapter of the bio-crime noir saga builds up some key character moments. Lieberman’s writing dabbles into the long build of Shay’s moves. Henderson and Azpiazu capture the dark nature of dirty business with the art. Sit back and buckle in. This is a long build with a huge payoff coming.

THE LUCKY DEVILS #1 by Charles Soule, Ryan Browne, Kevin Knipstein, and Christopher Crank (Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Both Cam and Starr come from ordinary lives. The pair strives for more but seem to fall flat. Enter in the “devils on the shoulders” and the story begins to speed forward.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #2 (DC COMICS)

Lois Lane against Kal-El? Some would think this is a typo. Unfortunately for the Man of Tomorrow, this is a reality. Superman is far from what fans know In the Absolute Universe. Can the unlikely hero survive the Lazarus Corp. onslaught?

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #2 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey (DC COMICS) continues its bold take on the Man of Steel.

Let’s take a deeper dive into this latest installment!

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #2 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The dynamic between Lois and Kal is vastly different than the ones fans know. Aaron writes Lane as an ambitious soldier dedicated to the cause at hand. Superman is reluctant to comply to oppression. This results in a fast paced adventure. One theme that cannot be overlooked is the sense of right and wrong bestowed on the young Kryptonian.

After a brief attack, Superman addresses Lane in a blunt manner. This reflects the anger of the Peacemakers efforts to impose. From here, readers watch what Superman does best: inspire hope in hopelessness. Saving bystanders once an attack vehicle crashes is perfectly narrated by Lane. It mirrors the readers thoughts as this new version of Superman takes action. This builds towards a solid conclusion. Aaron builds a mix of classic teases with new takes. The final page solidifies the darkness lying ahead. One fight is over for now but easily not for long.

Sandoval and Arreola waste no time in setting a tense stage. The conflict between the Lazarus Corp and Superman fires off with a tremendous two page spread. This leads into a moment fans have been waiting to see. A one page image showcases the iconic cape in a completely new fashion. Events only escalate from here.

The rescue imagery brings out what fans love of Superman. The defiance to Lane’s mission. His selfless heroics is saving people trapped from a crash. Performing feats no one else can. The art team packs it all together in just a few pages. Superman’s impact is written on Lane’s face. The many emotions shown as she writes her events report speaks volumes. Events conclude with a dark and disturbing image. The true evil Superman is gearing to fight comes into light. It will be a challenge fans will be eager to watch be (hopefully) defeated.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

With a blend of classic and new takes, Superman makes a loud statement in its’ latest chapter. Aaron’s writing keeps the Man Of Steel soaring with hope. Sandoval, Arreola and Carey flood the pages with action and intrigue. In a short amount of time, this story has made an immediate impact with no signs of slowing down.

Let’s take a closer look as events fade into darkness.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #32 by Mark Waid, Adrián Gutiérrez, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid escalades the conflict with many twists and turns. Eclipso’s plans controlling Batman and Superman lead into a growing threat. The writing allows the heroes to dig into their dark sides while an unlikely hero steps in to save them. Robin becomes the teacher in keeping the heroes at bay long enough to get help. That comes in the form of one of DC’s greatest superhero teams.

The injection of the JSA throws a great dynamic into play. Readers watch as the team steps up to take down the finest. Waid dishes up a shocking way to try and free Batman from Eclipso’s clutches. It is a moment that will have fans’ attention. This leads into the closing portion of the chapter. Just when readers think they have some answers, Waid flips the situation to provide a strong cliffhanger until next time. There is a reason this series gets all the deserved praise it gets. It always showcases fantastic storytelling.

Gutiérrez and Bonvillain make an immediate impact with the opening pages. Eclipso’s return to Earth is greeted with a bold full page image of the possessed heroes. The following panel of the maniacal laughter strikes a chord with the audience. Eclipso looks every bit as an unhinged threat to take on all challengers.

On the other hand, the art depicts Robin as a frantic, concerned hero. This comes from witnessing the big two under Eclipso’s control. The sequence with Commissioner Gordon come across larger than life due to some JSA influence. Seeing the subtle change in the Bat-signal works as a defining moment of events changing.

Along with these pages, Robin’s big moment pops off the page due to Wands’ lettering. The panel makes a big statement and switches the course of the story. It leads into a ever-changing final act. Once here, a full page portrait of heroes says one thing. The following panels flip everything around as the final shot reminds everyone this fight is far from over.

FINAL POINT: 9.2

Eclipso’s reign of chaos continues as more heroes enter the fray. Waid’s writing keeps readers on edge with suspense. It’s equally matched with the phenomenal work of Gutiérrez (along with Bonvillain and Wands). The imagery shuffles up the exciting battles with the overall sense of trickery. Judging by the last page, expect more shock ad awe before this tale concludes.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the Civil Corps action!

GREEN LANTERN #16 by Jeremy Adams, Xermánico, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams wastes no time in revving up the action in space! Mogo’s destruction of Thanagar sends early shockwaves throughout the cosmos. Jordan and Stewart take up the mantle of protectors and immediately jump into the melee. The writing is classic Lanterns at its’ best. Jordan is fearless as the odds are stacked against. John Stweart is all about handling the business at hand. Together, they take the story into higher ground.

The Guy Gardner and Durlans side-plots break up the straight forward pacing. Each add another layer of a fastly rising tale. The Durlans surprise helps to keep readers guessing. Knowing the stakes at hand, the writing teases a few possibilities. Ultimately, events swing back towards the heroics of the Lanterns. It builds up towards a solid closing act. Star Sapphire takes center stage before the chapter bows out with more drama on the horizon.

Xermánico and Fajardo Jr. display the full extent of Mogo’s actions with nothing held back. The loud two-page spread leaves a trail of destruction behind as the story flies into gear. Once the Lanterns head into action, the art reflects an energetic feel. It is filled with fast moving and direct panels.

Events build towards a strong two page image breaking down the moving parts. The conflict is capped off with great full page shot of Jordan and Stewart taking care of some business before the closing act. Once here, the art swings into a suspenseful image to bring down the house on a strong follow-up chapter to the event.

BATMAN AND ROBIN: YEAR ONE #1 (DC COMICS)

The Dynamic Duo. Gotham City’s Dark Knight. A Boy Wonder. Together, they have carved their legacy throughout the years as an unstoppable pairing. It wasn’t a smooth start for Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson.

Now, a legendary creative team reunites to present their first adventure!

BATMAN AND ROBIN: YEAR ONE #1 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Mat Lopes and Clayton Cowles sees the duo dive into action!

Let’s not wait another minute and check this debut out!

BATMAN AND ROBIN: YEAR ONE #1 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Mat Lopes and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid takes readers on an exciting start with this initial chapter. Dick Grayson steals the show as he embraces the Robin persona. The writing depicts him as a naive, over-eager boy trying to make a difference. This never sets well with Batman. The clash of personalities continues to provide fun moments in-between the growing mystery of their case.

Two-Face is a perfect choice for this adventure. In dealing with true identities, Harvey Dent is as complex as Bruce Wayne. This reflects a line Batman says driving to Gotham. “Let Your True Self Be your disguise” works on all parties involved. Both Batman and Robin escape their pain via their alter egos. Through this, the pair heads right into action. Waid stages the conflict exceptionally. It flows with big action and brewing drama. The result leads to a great cliffhanger ending as the Duo’s first year has only just begun.

Samnee and Lopes lock readers in on the beginnings of a historic team. The opening two page splash ramps up on the surging moment. It’s followed up by panels spotlighting the difference in demeanors. Batman’s brooding is outmatched by Robin’s optimism. The fallout results in a full page image ushering the duo into action.

Pacing never slows down as the pair weave around dangers to the main culprit. Two-Face’s reactions to the pair’s banter adds the familiar sense of their rocky connection. Readers watch as a young Robin tries breaking down Dent’s clues but is completely out of league. It shifts gears towards a fun, energetic closing. Anytime you can get Batman to smirk breaks up the mounting drama. The panels mirror that as it teases a bigger mystery still evolving on the closing pages. This is high level storytelling at its’ finest.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

Diving into the past, readers sit front row as a legendary duo embarks on an unbreakable path of justice. Waid’s writing matches the opposite personas flawlessly while growing the story. Samnee, Lopes and Cowles construct the classic time period with much enthusiasm. This is a magnificent introduction into a past worth revisiting.
