BATMAN/GREEN ARROW/THE QUESTION: ARCADIA #1 (DC COMICS)

What is “Arcadia”? It is something that brings together three of DC’s most infamous vigilantes. Bruce Wayne. Oliver Queen. Vic Sage. Each have their own unique way to fight crime. Some more “quirky” than others. All don’t really play well with others.

How long can these three work together? Better yet, do they even want to?

BATMAN/GREEN ARROW/THE QUESTION: ARCADIA #1 by Gabriel Hardman, Romulo Fajardo Jr. & Simon Bowland welcomes the three into a gritty Black Label tale for the ages.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what unfolds here.

BATMAN/GREEN ARROW/THE QUESTION: ARCADIA #1 by Gabriel Hardman, Romulo Fajardo Jr. & Simon Bowland (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Combining all 3 of these vigilantes can be difficult, especially dealing with Sage. Hardman instantly adds in the gritty aura of the Question to kick things off. Sage’s ever-growing paranoia blends in with his current investigation. It leads the way to have the other two leads slowly added into the mix. This works better for Queen, who’s brash persona instantly causes drama. Once Sage contacts Queen, the story really picks up steam.

Readers watch as all key players get caught up in the mystery of Arcadia. There’s a fair share of brooding mystery as an attack in Belize w/ Batman harbors more than it lets on. Sage’s path takes a more darker twist as he and Queen start their mission. Hardman takes full advantage of the Black Label banner to present this story. Each character gets enough page time to build their cases. Once at the final act, themes get tighter as all roads appear to come into one. It’s a refreshing spin on the character’s and their visions of truth.

Hardman is pulling double duty for this saga with art duties. The Question’s bleek outlook comes into light with grizzled coloring. Fajardo Jr. gives this story a very dated look to a throwback time. If it was anything else, the visuals just wouldn’t work here. From Queen’s night out to Batman dealing with some young upstarts, the imagery connects to how tough this take is going to be.

As the globe-trotting begins, the art brings out different looks of each lead. Wayne leans heavy into his billionaire persona. This switches into Dark Knight mode to thwart an attack. Each look tracks to compile Batman’s status as a wild-card. This shines in the aftermath of stopping the uprising strike.

Sage’s situation is more complex. Readers see the seedy world he steps in for answers. This results in a dire outcome. Queen walks in-between both worlds for his portion. Once at the end, he embraces his alter ego in search of the truth. The final page shows Queen might have some issues in achieving goal. Suffice to say, a first impression was made here.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Merging a gritty view of a starling conspiracy with three classic heroes equals a promising new tale. Hardman hits the key aspects of his leads while presenting the visuals in spectacular fashion. Expectations are high for this saga via a strong first impression.

The Hornsby’s and Halo’s have been arrested and taken to Federal Plaza in NYC. Looking on are the culprits behind them being arrested, Beezle & Domino can only gloat briefly as they need to find Zach & Rose. Speaking of the latter, they are riding the subway train as they are drawn towards a beacon.

That urge draws them into a secret world behind the walls of the subway where they meet Yogi, who is a piano playing Nephilim. He explains to the kids that a few stops down is a place where they can opt out of the cycle. But as they debate finding out what that place is, Beezle & Domino try to crash the party.

WRITING:

This issue really brings together and bridges the story for where it’s going. Peter J. Tomasi & Peter Snejbjerg do an excellent job of making sure the reader knows what’s going on well advancing the story forward. The easy-to-follow nature of the story really makes it endearing to fans of all ages and across genres. Its strength and weakness are one and the same, and that it is not a traditional hero book, but more of a whimsical tale with heroics.

ARTWORK:

The art in this issue is amazing and matches the tone of the story perfectly. The art style reminds me of Saturday morning cartoons only in comic book form. This really captures the whimsical nature of the story and makes the reader feel the story from panel to panel. John Kalisz does a wonderful job with the colors and matches the tone of the art impeccably. This book and series proves why if the art and story compliment one another, the reader will be drawn in.

Final Grade: 8/10

Hornsby & Halo #12 is a fun read that also brings the reader in and makes them want more. As the story moves forward the stakes are being raised, well the mystery of what lies ahead really ropes the reader in. If you are looking for a different and whimsical story and series, this should be on your list of what to pick up at the shop this week.

SUPERMAN #32 (DC COMICS)

When the fate of the world is at stake, a hero emerges. In this case, “hero” is a term used very loosely.

LEX LUTHOR IS BACK!

After recent events, Luthor dropped off the radar to re-assess. His time away was one of peace. It was never going to last with evil looming in the wings. With “DC K.O” needing someone in possession of absolute power, how could Luthor say no?

SUPERMAN #32 by Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Alejandro Sánchez & Ariana Maher presents the return of Lex Luthor!

Let’s take a closer look and see how this plays out!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson takes readers for quite the ride with Luthor for this chapter. The opening shows Lex at his crowning moment. Knowing what he believes is his destiny, his dialogue comes off as smug and confident as ever. Watching Grodd tip him off to Doomsday’s plans is just enough to launch his own view of divide and conquer.

Readers watch as many familiar tropes are used to set the plan in motion. Including in some fan-favorites is no mistake. Williamson uses their rage and questionable personas to make a powder keg waiting to implode. This is especially true with the Joker. It is easy to tell the pure enjoyment Williamson is having creating these moments. It serves as a sound transition point to another lingering plot point.

Superboy-Prime and Lois Lane run through a gauntlet of extremes. Due to the events of time and space, certain plot points are allowed to resurface. This proves successful as more party crashers arrive. The writing mirrors Prime’s twisted view of the world while fighting back. It results in a questionable move. How that will play out due to K.O.’s current events is anyone’s guess. For now, its a perfect closing point until next chapter.

Barrows & Ferreira hit the Lois Lane drama with a two page splash. While early, it helps to drive home the close when time. In between, its all about Lex Luthor. The art locks in on Lex’s pure hatred pouring through when confronting Superman. The flashbacks with the Legion Of Doom make their points with a full Joker image stealing the page. Its a solid build before heading into K.O.

As events move back to Prime and Lane, the full shot of the Legion attacking sets the pace. Lois’ reaction is perfect for this encounter. Her unbreakable will steps up. A shocking two-page splash ushers in a surprise factor. Readers watch as not everything is as what it seems. This goes into the close with a surprise final page. Secrets are revealed as the “K.O".” moment takes hold. Fans will have a great deal to enjoy here.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The return of Lex Luthor takes center stage in an exciting K.O. tie-in. Williamson’s writing brings back the legendary villain superbly. Barrows, Ferreira & the art team shine as the egotistical figure returns with a vengeance. Is Luthor humanity’s last hope? Only one way to find out.

STAR WARS: BOBA FETT - BLACK, WHITE & RED #3 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 3rd issue of the mini-series Boba Fett: Black, White & Red from Marvel Comics!

This is the 3rd of 4 issues, and much like it's predecessors it hits the ground running and doesn't stop! It’s a unique series because just like its predecessor’s (such as Darth Vader), it only uses THREE colors. Those colors are black, white & red! It’s always a fascinating series when Marvel does it, and so far this series is no different! So let’s jump into it!

CREDIT: MARVEL COMICS

The Story

Ethan Sacks is in the writer's chair for this issue and he continues the classic feeling this whole series has just been exuding from the very beginning. The story follows Boba Fett and from more than one perspective in time!

The issue kicks off with an incredible fight between Boba and a heavily armed force on Nar Shaddaa with Boba being on the hunt for information. Just what information you might ask? It's information about an individual he's looking for that was at one point the target of a bounty.

The story effortlessly flows between the present & the past, to a Boba Fett you might recognize from The Clone Wars. It's unclear when exactly this flashback takes place, as it simply says "Then." but it's a tremendous look at one of the most well known characters in pop culture history during a time where we don't know too much about what happens to him.

It's a fantastic story because it feels like a classic story from your childhood that you might've come up with while you were playing with your Boba Fett figure after just watching The Empire Strikes Back.

The Artwork

Juan Jose Ryp does a great job with the artwork in this issue, especially considering only 3 colors were available to use! I really liked the familiarity you got between the flashes of present day & the past, and the action sequences were just top notch. The story is great and worth the purchase alone, but you can really enjoy this issue (and series) if you're not a huge Star Wars fan for the artwork alone.

FINAL POINT: This is the quintessential Boba Fett story of our time. It's Boba as we've come to expect from him with all the years of comics, books, tv, movies And that's helped by an incredible story from Ethan Sacks & artwork that is out of this world from Juan Jose Ryp. It's an easy story to get into, no matter what level of Star Wars fan you are.

Overall Grade: 10/10

GEIGER #18 (IMAGE COMICS/GHOST MACHINE)

For all intents and purpose, Tariq Geiger should be dead. Caught in a nuclear explosion, Geiger gained immense powers. This has caused a huge bullseye to be placed on his back. Those that have tried to take out “The Glowing Man” have failed immensely.

After Geiger overextends his powers, he has been knocked unconscious and taken prisoner. He finds himself in a tough situation. A warden has sentenced him for death. Drained from his powers, Geiger finds himself closer to death than he has been in quite some time.

GEIGER #18 by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Eduardo Pansica, Norm Rapmund, Robert Nugent, Brad Anderson, & Rob Leigh pits The Glowing Man against overwhelming odds to survive.

Let’s take a closer look to see how this shapes up.

GEIGER #18 by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Eduardo Pansica, Norm Rapmund, Robert Nugent, Brad Anderson, & Rob Leigh (Image Comics/ Ghost Machine)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In the ever changing world of Geiger, always expect the unexpected. Seeing him as a prisoner unlocks true horrors. A guard’s bliss in seeing Geiger and another inmate fight leads to a dark overtone. This results in a dangerous judgement. The writing leans into the emotional call to action. It results in unleashing Pandora’s box.

Readers watch as a dark side was unleashed. The dialogue dives into the weight Geiger carries. It becomes very clear what mistake was made in trying to take him out. The pace slows down to focus in on the fallout. Once the closing act begins, it is a straight shot to wrap up. Readers get a steady finish to a deeper look into a borken Glowing heart.

Pansica steps in for the opening portion of the book. Goldbeard introduces himself to this issue via full page shot. His persona shines in these opening panels. Once events move to the prison, the tone embraces the darker aspects of the writing. It leads into an intense face-off with Geiger and a cell mate.

Their encounter covers much ground when a corrupt guard intervenes. It results in a corrupt verdict against Geiger. A full page image shows his fate. Readers watch a slow build until events fully explode. The art team delivers a few vintage Geiger moments. This style amplifies a treasured discovery. There are many elements swirls around these panels. As Frank takes over to close, panels tie up loose ends with a strong final page. It serves as a reset point for an already fantastic journey.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Geiger faces off with more than mortality in this latest chapter. Johns’ writing digs deep inside a glowing soul. Pansica, Frank and the art team unleash an inner rage which humanity still questions. A solid chapter to finish with a new adventure waiting in the wings.

Let me know your thoughts on Geiger #18 in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

THE MORTAL THOR #4 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 4th issue of The Mortal Thor from Marvel Comics!

To this point in the three prior issues, we've been following the journeys of Sigurd Jarlson. A man who looks a heck of a lot like Thor, but doesn't have any memories of his past. Despite that he's still extremely handy with a hammer and has attracted some attention. So now things take a turn, and we focus on Asgard. So let's jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics

The Mortal Thor #4 by Al Ewing (Writer), Juan Cabal (Artist), Mattia Iacono (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Sabino (Letterer) is a surprising change of pace, but one that works considering Canada recently celebrated Thanksgiving, and the United States is about to.

The Story

Al Ewing really surprised me with the story in this issue. Considering how things ended in the third issue with Odin himself showing up to confront Loki (or who we presume to be Loki), I really expected a continuation of that. However we instead turn our focus to Asguard and those who live there.

We catch up with what exactly the Asguardians have been doing since Thor's "death", and hint...it's exactly what you think it is. However it's also a time to catch up with the sort of political machinations of Asguard. Thor was the All Father after all, and with his death it has left a vacancy on the throne. A vacancy that none are willing to take up the mantle and fill the shoes.

As I said before, I was really caught off guard and surprised by this issue. It was surprisingly down to Earth (or would it be Asguard in this case?) and an interesting look into how the Asguardians are dealing with things post-Thor. I really enjoyed the subterfuge and double crossing in the issue, along with the sense of greater purpose. It reminded me of the first two Thor movies in the MCU, and would be a fascinating thread to explore further if we get the opportunity to do so.

The Artwork

Juan Cabal & Mattia Iacono did a phenomenal job with the art on the issue. I really liked the way the characters were drawn in the issue, and also how there was a clear difference between the two locations we see in the issue. it also has a classic Thor look & feel to it from recent history.

FINAL POINT: A change of scenery & pace that really doesn't hurt the series in any way. It's a wholesome story that provides enough intrigue to add some interesting layers to the overall story being told. Together with some great artwork, this issue is a must read for any Thor fan!

Overall Grade: 8.0/10

I SAW SANTA: A SPAWN CHRISTMAS STORY #1 (IMAGE COMICS/TODD McFARLANE PRODUCTIONS)

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, because everyone was dead. Not the story you are used to, but in the Spawn Universe this version is not a surprise but expected. I Saw Santa is a Christmas story from the world of Spawn that if you like horror you’re going to want to check out. Let’s dive in and see what it’s all about.

(IMAGE COMICS/TODD McFARLANE PRODUCTIONS)

I Saw Santa #1: A SPAWN CHRISTMAS STORY #1

Plot/Script By Chris Killian & Andrew Sanders – Art By Thomas Nachlik

Colors By Dan & Dave Kemp - Letters By Andworld Design

Edited By Thomas Healy - Published By Image Comics

***Minor Spoilers Possible***

STORY OVERVIEW:

Detectives Sam & Twitch of the NYPD show up to a homicide scene on Christmas Eve. But this is no normal homicide, this is a brutal and gory entire family murder. Both parents, two kids, and even the dog have been killed and their heads removed and placed in gift boxes, with the lyrics to “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” written on the boxes. The detectives discover that it may not have been the killer that turned the murder in as originally believed, but the evidence points towards Jolly Old Saint Nick himself as the one that turned in the murder to the police.

We then catch up with Santa who is covered in blood and despondent. The reason being is the killer gifted him with this kill, and it isn’t the first time this has happened. The letter the killer left was signed by a naughty boy Charlie, who murdered his own family and tried to kill Santa in 1995. Now he’s back and it appears he won’t stop until he or Santa are dead.

WRITING:

This book is a fantastic Christmas horror story, that really pushes the envelope. Chris Killian & Andrew Sanders bring a really messed up story to the season of joy. The carnage, brutality, and overall messed up family murders were totally unexpected, but in the realm of the Spawn Universe it works perfectly. The back story of Charlie and his initial run in with Santa where he murdered his family and tried to kill Santa is somehow more messed up then the family kill the story opens with.

ARTWORK:

The art in this book matches the messed-up story perfectly. Thomas Nachlik does an amazing job of bringing this violent and brutal story to life with his art. The graphic and gory nature of the story is only overshadowed by how awesome and graphic the art is. Nachlik really brings these murders to life in stunning detail and leaves nothing to the imagination. Meanwhile, Dan Kemp & Dave Kemp put the exclamation point on the art with their color pallet. The art team really hit a homerun with this book and deserve a ton of credit.

Final Grade: 10/10

I Saw Santa #1 is an awesome Christmas horror story that will make all horror fans rejoice. The violence and graphic nature of this book will make it not for everyone. However, if you are a fan of the Terrifier series this book will hit the spot for you. Personally, I can’t wait for the second book and to see what comes next. This is my Pick of the Week and if you are a horror fan you need to run to the LCS and secure your copy NOW!

Let’s take a closer look at how this new story begins!

Lost Fantasy #5 by Curt Pires, Luca Casalanguida, Mark Dale & Micah Myers (IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Pires opens this latest case with a bit of bait and switch. Starting in the present day, Blackheart starts his investigation. His calm persona hides the more personal aspects of this case. Once the story jumps back 24 hours, more darkness starts to emerge. Events move quickly thanks to a hooded figure. His actions are swift and violent as he confronts Cyrus.

Readers are quickly treated to an all out melee with huge swords. Casalanguida goes big for these moments. A two page splash sets a violent course full speed ahead. There are plenty of amazing action panels here. The fight ends with a monster full page exclamation point.

Once the smoke clears, Henry starts processing what has gone down. The dialogue cuts as he accepts the clues but challenges them. A visit to Nihlas proves eventful. The dialogue features the rivals in a respectful place. Knowing what happened with Cyrus, animosity is put aside. It leads to the closing pages. A parting full page image leaves no doubt that a hunt has started. Pray for those in Henry’s way.

This chapter also has a feature from Pires, Franklin Jonas & Maxi Dall'o. A new character is joining the ranks. The pages tease a magical aspect right before dealing with some bad guys. Very intriguing indeed.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Henry Blackheart returns with a personal case he can’t walk away from. Pires sets the stage with a deeply rooted attack through unclear motives. Casalanguida & Dale bring the actions with some incredible fight scenes. The latest arc has all the making for an all time classic.

NIGHTWING #132 (DC COMICS)

How the student has truly become the teacher. Dick Grayson had taken a young kid with immense power under his wing. The learning curve has been difficult, esp. when the sidekick possesses Kryptonian strength. All seems normal until a Kryptonite bullet takes the boy out.

A haunting image is placed in Nightwing’ head. The Zanni is here. Time for diplomacy is over. Vengeance fills his heart now. What will he find as he looks to take down the evil threat once and for all?

NIGHTWING #132 by Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini & Wes Abbott escalates business with its’ latest chapter.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what unfolds now.

NIGHTWING #132 by Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini & Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Just when readers think they know the story, Watters throws a few curves. Olivia Pearce has crossed a line with her actions. This pushes Grayson into making a rash choice. Taking the fight to Pearce’s home turf fills pages with solid action. Her suit mimics Grayson’s every move. The one thing it cannot is his heart. In this case, that might be more costly than it seems.

Readers watch as Pearce’s unhinged origin starts to slowly unwind. The writing walks through the slow play to lure out the Boy Wonder. When plans go awry, it unlocks a true terror. Even as trained as Grayson is, the moment throws him completely off-guard. It also disguises the true play at hand. Watters takes Grayson completely out of his comfort zone. The chaotic manner sets the stage for a greater downfall commencing. There is an overwhelming sense of fear that encompasses Bludhaven’s hero to his core. A perfect exit point until next time.

Soy and Gandini open with a full shot of Nightwing-Prime fighting for life. The striking image is enough to push Nightwing over the edge. Readers are in for a treat with the full page image of Grayson running into combat. It sets the pace for the next action sequences. Moves fly fast as Pearce activates her suit. Through these panels, Grayson’s rage continues to build.

The face-off on top of the train catapults into Pearce’s reveal. Soy hides Pearce’s face behind flashback panels. This technique keeps hidden Pearce’s long play. It builds up to an absolutely terrifying full page shot. The attention to detail is incredible for this scene. Readers watch as Nightwing becomes lost in the truth that he never sees the next move. This results in a shocking public display. The only thing unchanged is Grayson’s exploding rage. It dissolves into a more somber parting panel. There’s no doubt of how fast Grayson is sinking further into despair.

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

What starts as a confrontation turns into a horrific scene Dick Grayson can’t imagine. Watters hides the brutal truth in his writing. Soy and Gandini deliver on setting the stage for a living nightmare in Bludhaven. Don’t sleep on what’s unfolding here.

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #7 (DC COMICS)

Kryptonians beware! After a meteor crashed to Earth, it left an abundance of Krytponite in its wake. The deadly element is easy for the wrong people to obtain. This has made a huge problem for DC’s Super Family. John Henry Irons and Steelworks is working on the problem. He has a very familiar test subject to help him in this quest.

Jon Kent has returned to Smallville with a broken heart. His boyfriend broke up with him in “Secret Six”. Kent returns home to find a new path but something lies in the shadows to halt this journey.

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #7 by Dan Slott, Jeremy Adams, Lucas Meyer, Marcelo Maiolo & Dave Sharpe throws the spotlight on Jon Kent: Daily Planet reporter!

Let’s take a closer look at how this all plays out.

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #7 by Dan Slott, Jeremy Adams, Lucas Meyer, Marcelo Maiolo & Dave Sharpe (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Slott plots Jon Kent in a new landscape with excellent results. Working with Steelworks appeases his superhero side. There is one aspect that still weighs heavy on the Man of Steel. Breaking up with Jay Nakamura is still an open wound. Adams’ dialogue doesn’t let that escape reader attention. His famous parents are also aware of the “Secret Six” fallout.

Lois Lane’s conversation covers much ground. Adams nails the family caring while pushing Jon into a new direction. This leads into some classic Superman themes. The “Translated from Rooster” was a fun moment. As Jon goes through his reporting phase, it unlocks more of his character. This leads into a solid confrontation and conclusion. Sometimes powers don’t finish conflicts. All it needs is a cooler head to prevail. Readers clearly see that’s why Jon Kent is the hero he is and legend in the future. Very enjoyable read.

Meyer and Maiolo open up the art with a full page of Jon in action. The subtle Jay nods easily effect the Man of Steel. It leads into frustration on Jon’s face before finishing his tests. A two page splash welcomes Jon back to Smallville in style. This all changes once his mother checks in virtually.

Their banter shines as the subject of Jon’s heartbreak. Lois’s optimistic responses sees Jon let his guard down. This rolls into a new investigation. The full page image of Jon using his powers stands out while his grandparents object. Readers watch as this inquisitive move moves into a discovery. The reveal is grand as Jon finds out what has been the disturbance. Meyer sneaks in some action sequences before a full page ends the conflict. This moves into a more light-hearted finish. Readers can sense this right to the last panel. A great one-liner is complimented by a simple panel with huge heart. No better way to visually end this.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Jon Kent’s return to Smallville leads to mystery and self-reflection in a fantastic issue. The writing ties in the vintage Superman themes with new takes. Meyer, Maiolo and Sharpe construct superb imagery to guide readers through Jon’s investigation. Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow indeed.

Spider-Man Holiday Spectacular #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the Spider-Man Holiday Spectacular from Marvel Comics!

It's almost that wonderful time of year! That time where friends & family gather together to celebrate traditions old & new. As it turns out our favorite heroes from the Marvel comic universe are just like us! So let's jump into it!

credit: marvel comics

Spider-Man Holiday Spectacular #1 by Rainbow Rowell (Writer), Luciano Vecchio/Paco Medina/Nathan Stockman/Bob Quinn (Artists), Matt Milla (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Sabino (Letterer) is a great issue to read that will put you in that holiday mood you're so familiar with.

The Story

Things are fairly straightforward in this issue, but that doesn't take away from how much fun the issue is. The story focuses around Spider-Man and trying to find a place to be for the Holidays. You see he normally spends his time with his Aunt May, but she's going to be away this time around.

What follows is a spectacular journey that takes us to see the Fantastic Four, The Avengers & some of the X-Men with plenty of familiar faces making an appearance. I really loved how wholesome the story was, and getting to see just how loved & appreciated Spider-Man was by the other heroes.

The Artwork

The entire creative team did a fantastic job with the artwork throughout the issue. There was a lot going on in the issue in terms of the number of characters at each of the parties. The whole crew did a great job featuring each of the characters and giving them a moment to shine. It also just felt so warm and wholesome & reminded me of years past as a kid. I really loved the artwork from start to finish.

FINAL POINT: 9.0/10

This is an issue that you don't have to be caught up on any of the current Spider-Man, Avengers, X-Men comics to get into. It's a great way to kick off the holiday season & it would make a great gift for that comic book fan in your life this year.

Thanks for checking out my review! Be sure to reach out to me on Twitter & let me know what you thought of the issue!

THE LAST WITCH: BLOOD AND BETRAYAL #5 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Poised to let the Eater of The World free, Nan stands defiant. Saoirse has one last chance to stop her. She’s been tested before but never like this!

The Last Witch: Blood & Betrayal #5 by Conor McCreery, V. V. Glass, Natalia Nesterenko & Taylor Esposito (Ghost Glyph Studios) concludes its’ magical trip into the supernatural.

Let’s take a closer look at how the finale fares!

The Last Witch: Blood & Betrayal #5 by Conor McCreery, V. V. Glass, Natalia Nesterenko & Taylor Esposito (Ghost Glyph Studios) - Boom! Studios

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

McCreery lets Saoirse go into a familiar theme of this story. The writing shows her struggles and win versus self-doubt. Much of her strength comes from Brahm. The younger sibling’s optimism shines in clutch points. This proves true yet again in the early pages. From here, the road to the main even gets very short.

Readers get a double dose of showdowns for the finale. Nan’s confrontation with Hugh provides an equal threat with Saoirse’s fight. Pacing moves very fast as the action takes hold. It gives the audience a true sense of Saoirse’s growth and confidence. The battles live up to billing until they ultimately cross paths.

In this stage, the writing unloads on the pent-up emotion. There are a few scenes where you are kept on edge to where the Witch will act. This winds up concluding on a somber, yet fitting point. The resolution completes loose ends. Before bowing out, a little nod is given to readers on where things might lead next time they cross paths with the Last Witch.

Glass & Nesterenko lean heavily into the family bond between witch and brother. The opening pages show Brahm’s unwavering support in danger. This leads to a fitting acknowledgement of emotions from Saoirse. It serves as a well-timed transition to her fight against the Eater. Once here, the panels feel heavy with pressure mounting. The art reflects Saoirse’s new confidence in her reactions. This all leads to a steady close before dealing with Nan.

Readers see a drained witch ready to explode. Saoirse’s eyes tell quite a tale. Her rage can’t be denied. A well placed side panel instantly melts down the anger into nothing. Panels showcase the strain put on the young supernatural wielder. This leads into the outcome of Nan’s tale. A half page image speaks volumes as this portion wraps up. The epilogue gives a few different looks before leaving some mystery behind. A final panel puts a definitive stamp on what has been a truly thrilling ride.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Saoirse’s journey into magic proves to be a captivating finale. McCreery’s writing dives into the emotional baggage carried while fighting to survive. Glass and the art team weave in the drama in-between the magical confrontation. The series has been well worth the wait and you shouldn’t delay picking it up.

STAR WARS: JEDI KNIGHTS #9 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 9th issue of Star Wars: Jedi Knights from Marvel Comics!

It's been a very tumultuous time for Qui-Gon Jinn in this series set before the events of The Phantom Menace. Qui-Gon has been nearly killed because of a mysterious individual named Corlis Rath, a man he swears he's never met before. But what will happen now that Qui-Gon has woken up? Let's jump into it!

credit: marvel comics

Star Wars: Jedi Knights #9 by Marc Guggenheim (Writer), Madibek Musabekov (Artist), Luis Guerrero (Color Artist) & VC's Clayton Cowles (Letterer) is a great issue that starts to peel back the mystery on just what our villains motivations are.

The Story

Marc Guggenheim continues his incredible run with another fantastic story in the series. He's doing a fantastic job at keeping up the suspense, despite the fact that we know what's going to happen to most of the main characters.

We start to get a little bit of backstory as to what's going on between Qui-Gon Jinn & Corlis Rath and it's a fascinating read. We see a mystery reminiscent of Obi-Wan Kenobi's search in Attack of the Clones. There's also a great flashback sequence back to Qui-Gon's days as a Padawan under the tutelage of Count Dooku. To me this is where the story really excels.

We didn't get to see this pairing at all on the big screen, and the only real time we've seen it is limited to a little bit on the animated side of things. So to get to see these two important figures together is fantastic. You can also really get a sense for just where Dooku is at in his journey, and where he's going to end up and it's such a fascinating read.

The Artwork

Madibek Musabekov & Luis Guerrero do a tremendous job with the artwork in this issue. They did a great job with the flashback sequences and getting to see a young Qui-Gon was a real treat I didn't expect to see. I also liked the use of colors because it really brought across the gravity of what we were seeing. This series really has some of my favorite artwork in all of Star Wars comics right now.

FINAL POINT: 10/10

Marc Guggenheim pens one of the best Star Wars stories you'll read this year, and it's one you're not going to want to miss. Together with spectacular artwork this is an issue that any fan of Star Wars needs to read ASAP!

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #9 (MARVEL COMICS)

Even when Doom wins, Doom loses. Since becoming Sorcerer Supreme in “Blood Hunt”, Doctor Doom has used his new role to take over the world. Every hero on the planet stepped up to defeat him and failed. Doom used his high-level magic powers to make the moment a fixed event in time. Nothing can change this. Nothing.

There is one problem in Doom’s victory. Valeria Richards, his beloved goddaughter was accidentally killed while trying to reason with him. Few people matter to Doom as much as Valeria. How does he respond to his own actions?

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #9 by Ryan North, R. B. Silva, David Curiel, Travis Lanham concludes the latest Marvel Comics event with a can’t miss issue.

Let’s take a closer look at where the finale plays out.

credit: marvel comics

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

North throws a massive curve into this finale. Doom accepting he caused this death doesn’t not register. Watching the lengths he goes to fix this is very telling. It reflects his self-confidence. Doom also lets a small part of himself vulnerable to his conscious. This is a rare moment but adds to his complexity.

This point shines when dealing with a larger god: The Living Tribunal. The dialogue shows Doom’s demands to fix his wrong action. It doesn’t go unnoticed this “human” side of Doom is driving the scenes. The result is a costly one. His confrontation with Reed Richards dabbles in the heavy toll taken. Both characters have many thoughts boiling over. One’s emotions take over and leave the story in a very shocking state. The epilogue opens up another dangerous path. North leaves readers with much to ponder as a new era sets on the Marvel Universe.

Silva and Curiel flashback the relationship between Doom and Valeria to open. The two page splash of the present makes matters that more impactful. Seeing Doom face off with gods makes for powerful panels. It reflects his unwavering conviction to save Valeria. This escalates with the Tribunal gets involved.

From Doom’s presence facing off to the full page shot of the deal done, everything hits here. The fallout turns more grounded as the world reacts. Readers see many sides of the argument of Doom’s actions. This leads into a confrontation with Reed Richards. The old enemies spare no expense squabbling. Their stare down leads into a full page exclamation point. It’s impact is written on the final panel. There’s no doubt this story changes course for the MCU.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Doom’s greatest victory comes with a heavy toll in this phenomenal finale. North’s writing unlocks a side of the Monarch rarely seen in the MCU. Silva and the art team construct an impactful journey in a dark soul. Whenever Doom is involved, it is no mere story. It’s an event. This series lived up to billing so don’t miss the finish.

THE ULTIMATES #18 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 18th issue of The Ultimates from Marvel Comics!

In a world set up by The Maker, the heroes of Earth 6160 are doing everything they can to subvert his every move and emerge victorious. However The Maker is set to make his return imminently! So just what can our heroes do? Let's jump into it!

credit: Marvel Comics

The Ultimates #18 by Deniz Camp (Writer), Juan Frigeri (Artist) & VC's Travis Lanham is a great issue that sets up what should be the biggest issue in the series so far incredibly!

The Story

Deniz Camp keeps this relatively quiet in this issue, but it still packs quite a punch in how impactful it is. If you've been keeping up with the series you know that the end of each issue has had a sort of countdown going on, which of course is leading to the Maker's return. Well his return is nearly upon us, but before the inevitable battle begins one must first take the great plunge to prepare.

Tony Stark spends the entire issue appealing to the entire world, trying to convince the populace to join up with their resistance movement. Of course it's a tall task to do, standing up to the Maker & his council. Remember this is a world set up by the Maker, and as such he's set up all of the powerful figures of the world to be his own cronies. So getting all the help they can won't hurt.

It's an incredibly powerful speech from Tony, and it sees results immediately. If it wasn't clear enough already, things are going to get explosive and downright destructive. Deniz Camp is penning an absolute masterpiece and I can't wait to see where it goes.

The Artwork

Juan Frigeri is on the artwork for this issue & he does one of the most incredible jobs of a lifetime with the art. He brings such a level to the artwork it almost jumps off the pages and compliments the story beautifully. His pieces with the general populace of this world are particularly incredible and really convey just the importance of what we're seeing here. I honestly think it's some of the best artwork you're going to see on comic stands this week!

FINAL POINT: 9.0/10

Deniz Camp continues his spectacular run with this issue & delivers another incredible story. It's an incredible set up for what's sure to be one of the most anticipated issues of the year. Together with some spectacular artwork you really don't want to miss this series.

THE TERMINATOR: METAL #2 (DYNAMITE COMICS)

When members of the resistance are captured that are forced to scavenge for the machines in terrible prisons. All they want is to be free and rejoin their families. However, is an escape truly an escape?

The Terminator: Metal #2

Written By Declan Shalvey & Rory McConville

Art By Eoin Marron – Colors By Colin Craker

Letters By Jeff Eckleberry – Edited By Nate Cosby

Published By Dynamite Entertainment

***Minor Spoilers Possible***

Story Overview:

Billy is a prisoner in a Skynet facility working as a slave looking through scraps to salvage materials the machines need. He writes a diary to his wife, who he hopes is still alive and safe inside one of the last fortified strongholds of the human race, Eagle One. One day at work another inmate Javier introduces Billy to a new prisoner, Ava, who is with the resistance and was stationed out of Eagle One. The two of them come up with an escape plan and get the other prisoners involved in said escape. But after they escape will they truly be free of their captures or will they just walk into another trap?

Writing:

This issue takes the reader on one hell of a ride, with a great twist ending. Declan Shalvey & Rory McConville do an amazing job of showing the desperation of the prisoners and what they are going through. Personal relationships and what drives their motivations is what brings the greatest deal of intrigue to the issue. Especially Billy and the love and missing of his wife and how desperate he is to find her. That desperation is really showcased in the twist ending, as we find out to what lengths he will actually go to save his wife.

Artwork

This issue's artwork is outstanding, truly reflecting the spirit of the Terminator franchise. Eoin Marron does an awesome job of bringing the despair of the story onto the page. The backgrounds and the world of the Terminators really give the story a lot of character, well showing how bad the humans have it. The action sequences are graphic and bring the emotion of a big budget blockbuster. The color choices by Colin Craker match the tone and look of the art perfectly, really immersing the reader into the world.

Final Thoughts:

The Terminator: Metal #2 is an excellent story with superb art that will capture any reader’s imagination. The bleak world that gets filled with the hopes of our survivors, only to have the rug ripped from underneath them in the final pages will attract any comic fan out there. This is a book that should be on your list for when you hit the LCS this week.

Let’s take a closer look at where things stack up now.

Minor Threats: The Last Devil Left Alive #2 by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum, Scott Hepburn, Ian Herring & Nate Piekos (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Oswalt and Blum open up with a look at the disgraced Searcher. The writing showcases her fall from grace with a heavy weight. It is not what Follis is ready to deal with. Time is not on the side of patience. Much like the mastermind she is, Follis causes a situation. This draws out a young upstart team. One member hits close to home for Playtime. Th reactions showcased hold little back. Chaos ensues but there is a spark thrown into play.

An unlikely voice proves to be the catalyst for change. Dialogue between him and Searcher finally sinks into the hero. It is a strong moment that steers events into a forward direction. This is tough to break the hold another unlikely pair wields. Brain Tease and Barfly takes the reigns for an enjoyable side-plot. Their partnership provides some comedic flair inside the fast paced drama. Once in the clear, Follis makes another tough call. This time, the person of interest is one of infamy. It challenges the nature of “honor amongst thieves”. The fallout eases readers into the closing point. There’s a strong sense of doubt as the chapter winds down. Fans wouldn’t want it any other way. Phenomenal read.

Hepburn & Herring recap Searcher’s time with a solid one page image. The panels move to a nine-panel grid to hit the key areas before Playtime appears. Their interaction is filled with tension and snarky reactions. Readers can easily sense what Follis is trying to do. The results get upended with The Action arriving on the scene. Their full page intro kickstarts the heart of the issue.

Pacing moves the big panels right along. There is a sequence that steals the show. Sid The Grid’s talk with Searcher conveys the appeal of being a hero. Searcher’s subtle smile tips off where her mind is leaning. It takes a seat to another face-off with just as much impact. Playtime’s confrontation with an Action member turns personal. Emotions are high with this encounter. It ends with a dramatic escape the art presents with ease.

The Brain Tease and Barfly heist moves around this brawl with many fan moments. Their interactions are priceless as clash of personalities shine. Barfly’s reactions to events can’t be denied. Their full page escape is picture perfect. Readers will be raving about this. The closing pages tie in more deep pain before closing shop. Playtime’s tough call is greeted with a hefty price. All involved know what the stakes mean for this to happen. It moves events into a more calm point. Knowing what’s coming, finding hope might be more difficult than thought.

FINAL GRADE: 9.7

Playtime’s frantic plans are met with more than bargained for with this chapter. Oswalt and Blum blend in past drama with current tense emotions for a monster win. Hepburn and the art team weave in a wide look at villains trying to find a solid direction. Minor Threats continues to be a must-read story every time it drops.

YOUNGBLOOD #1 (2025 - IMAGE COMICS)

At last, the long wait is over! YOUNGBLOOD kickstarted the Image Comics revolution in 1992. The series has had a history all its’ own. Fans have never waivered in the support of the series. Now in 2025, Liefeld is bringing Shaft, Badrock, Vogue, Chapel & Die-Hard back home. The legendary creator is launching an all new explosive series back where it all began!

YOUNGBLOOD (2025) #1 by Rob Liefeld, Juan Manuel Rodriguez, Chance Wolf & Rus Wooton brings the action in its’ latest chapter!

Let’s take a closer look at how this debut issue fares.

YOUNGBLOOD (2025) #1 by Rob Liefeld, Juan Manuel Rodriguez, Chance Wolf & Rus Wooton (Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

One thing that is for certain with Liefeld writing, buckle in for the action. The chapter opens up with the team intercepting a threat in the Pacific. Xerxes’s ship has appeared with a deadly warning. Readers watch as the team does what it does best. The writing does an excellent job in showcasing the team to new readers. This quick synopsis compliments their extreme actions in trying to stop Xerxes. It might be the only slow point of the book.

As previously alluded to, the action doesn’t take long to start. Readers watch as the team deals with opposition with no punches pulled. Once arriving at the big boss, one member is made an example of. This works in instantly legitimizing Xerxes. The same method can be said for Vandel, Xerxes’s enforcer. Liefeld uses a very simplistic method in teasing what this group is about.

Some may not love the “Less is More” approach, but honestly, it works to establish the basics.Readers instantly know who’s the heroes and villains in the beginning. How this all fleshes out reminas to be seen. This all boils to a head with the final page. Another character makes a dramatic entrance as this story is about to go to extremes.

With the art, certain expectations are hit early. The first page pays a small homage to the original Image creators. This moves into a great two splash page team look. Liefeld mixes in a few more full pages images before the fists get flying. The team leaves nothing off limits as they deal with Xerxes’ forces.

Shaft’s strikes are as bloody as it gets. Wooten’s lettering takes these panels to new heights. Once Vandel enters the picture, things go from bad to worse. Readers watch as the strikes go for broke after a full page Shaft image. Xerxes makes a statement finish with his opponent. The panels reflect the power he wields. This leads into the parting image of the chapter. A dramatic return closes one door as Youngblood leaves no doubt they are back!

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

You want Blood? You Got it! The team that put Image on the map returns with a nostalgic feel in this latest debut. Liefeld plays to his strengths with the writing and art. The simplistic format still works to lock readers in from page one. There are many vintage looks woven in the fast paced plot. All build into the groundwork for what is sure to be another fan-pleasing go-around.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: TORN #2 (MARVEL COMICS)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 2nd issue of Amazing Spider-Man: Torn from Marve Comics!

Peter Parker is back in college! No he didn't get his degree revoked, but rather this is a story taking place in the early days of the mythos of Peter in the 616 universe. So just what does it all mean? Let's jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics

The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn #2 by J. Michael Straczynski (Writer), Pere Perez (Artist), Guru-eFX (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Caramanga (Letterer) isn't so much a step forward for the serie, but rather a step sideways. It's not bad, but it doesn't continue the great start that the first issue gave us.

The Story

It's a fairly straightforward issue this time round, and there aren't any huge revelations or big plot developments. Peter is on the trail of translating the Proteus Maleficarum, that's the book that was almost stolen in the first issue, but the problem is it's in German.

While he's doing that Evangeline is confronting the man who sent her on the job to steal the book in the first place and turned her into something out of an episode of Gargoyles.

It's not a bad story per se, but there isn't a whole lot going on with it. The story's been started and now the chess pieces are being set up so to speak. I don't want to call it filler, because it's only the 2nd issue, but it's close to it.

The Artwork

Pere Perez & Guru-eFX both do a great job with the art in the issue. As I said before, this series isn't set in the present day time of the 616 universe, but rather an earlier time when Peter & his friends were still in college, As such, Perez & Guru-eFX both do a great job with how Peter & his friends all look and bringing them to look like those early years.

FINAL POINT: The story isn't anything to write home about, but the artwork is definitely worth the read. The series still shows promise, but hopefully they can recover from an early misstep.

Overall Grade: 6.0/10

Thanks for checking out my review! Be sure to reach out to me on Twitter & let me know what you thought of the issue!
