AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #14 (MARVEL COMICS)

Peter Parker is in space?! Ben Reilly is posing as Parker on Earth?! NORMAN OSBORN IS SPIDER-MAN?! What in the world is happening? Blame Hellgate. After their initial encounter, Parker was taken off the board.

Knowing the world needs a Spider-Man, Osborn has filled in the role. There is a noticeable difference between the two enemies. Let’s not forget there is a Goblin Slayer looking for Norman on top of this!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #14 by Joe Kelly, Ed McGuinness, Todd Nauck, Mark Farmer , Wade Von Grawbadger , Marcio Menyz & Joe Caramagna picks up the latest adventures of “Spider-Norman” in its’ latest chapter.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what’s happening now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kelly opens up with a deep reflection from Osborn. The dialogue shows how the mantle of Spider-Man is too much to hold. Seeing Osborn admit this is a shocking picture. The same can be said for Reilly. His conversation with Hallow’s Eve is sharp and direct. Readers can start seeing the charade slowly fading. This comes into light with Dr. Osmani-Milton.

Osborn’s interruption nearly causes everything to fall apart. Kelly sneaks in a quiet verbal jab from Reilly that strikes a chord. This leads into a solid fight with the Goblin slayer. Readers watch as Osborn gets some reluctant help in fighting the machine. The moment is surprisingly energizing to Osborn. The writing shows how even he is being seduced into the heroic side of life. This leads into a more shocking close. Osborn has always had enemies but is he ready for who’s shown up on the last page? Only time will tell.

Art duties are split for this issue between McGuiness and Nauck. Norman’s reflection shows the wear of the mantle on his face. It connects with readers on the weight he chose to lift. This was also brought to attention via Nauck’s Reilly/Hallows Eve panels. Both characters know why they chose their paths. Neither seems comfortable walking them.

This moves events into the meeting with Dr. Osmani-Milton. McGuiness sets up for some secrets to be revealed until Norman arrives. Once here, both he and Reilly have many reactions to the verbal jabs. This moves into the fight with the slayer. A two page splash kickstarts the action. This builds up to a very fast pace. It concludes with a strong look at Norman taking victory. This is much to the disdain of Reilly. His scowl jumps off the page. The closing image unveils another party interested in taking Norman down. It results in a sold landing spot for the very fast moving chapter.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The “Spider-Norman” era continues to surprise as his heroic actions meet a road block. Kelly’s writing shows how far Osborn has fallen into Parker’s shadow. McGuiness, Nauck and the art team bring out the best and worst of a Peter Parker-less world. ASM is firing on all cylinders with this latest run. Don’t miss it.

This new “dynamic” duo has had their early challenges. Now, a real threat from Nightwing’s past has arrived. Welcome to the school of crime-fighting. There is no easy way for a passing grade.

Let’s take a closer look at where events stand now.

NIGHTWING #131 by Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini & Wes Abbott (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters takes readers along for the growing pains of Nightwing Prime right from the start. The writing leans into his eagerness as they watch Killer Moth come into town. There are some comical moments mixed in the drama. “Mothmarine” will be a crowd pleaser. Even as Grayson plays coach, his dialogue is very reminiscent to his mentor. This comes into play when caught off guard. It caps off time before heading the issue in a new direction.

Readers watch as a more serious case is forming. The dialogue between Maggie Sawyer and Grayson hits the landing. The reveal of the Zanni is a shock to Grayson. Knowing his impatient sidekick is loose, the attention swings back to Prime. This leads to a solid closing act. Even as unstoppable as Prime has been, one moment shifts everything away. The writing builds up this scene perfectly. It allows for the story to move into another direction with a great cliffhanger. Not sure where this may lead but definitely locked in for it.

Soy and Gandini give the Zanni a dramatic intro with the opening page. A mid panel foreshadows the dangers coming. The half page intro for Prime shifts moods very fast. Readers clearly see his naive nature as the Moth plan starts. The action speeds up with great panels of the sea chase. It leads to a more dramatic close with images of Nightwing fighting under water. This moves events into a more familiar realm of Grayson’s career.

Grayson’s meeting with Sawyer is classic in presentation. Panels reflect the breakdown of the latest case. The image of the Zanni is noteworthy. Seeing the face appear on sketch pops off the page. Grayson’s reaction was a solid compliment. This moved events to Prime’s impulse actions. A wild near full page displays Prime’s reckless powers. This is followed up by a dramatic full page image. It changes the mood heading into the final page. A disturbing parting shot concludes a very steady issue.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The growing pains of Nightwing-Prime causes triumphs and trouble in this issue. Watter’s writing spotlights the mentorship struggles. Soy and Gandini ramp up the action and drama with the art. The final page will have fans talking as this story consistently keeps them guessing.

ROGUE SUN #30 by Ryan Parrott, Nick Cotton, Abel, Bruno Frenda, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey (Image Comics/ Massive-verse)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Sir John of York makes a bold splash into the story with his opening sequence. The writing narrates just enough for new readers to get an understanding of the character. The intro is short and to the point. It doesn’t take long for Caleb Hawthorne to crash this party. Their interaction goes as well as one would expect. Readers watch as the two tussle before a cooler head prevails. Once here, the issue starts taking shape.

The Withered gets a proper introduction. Parrott and Cotton blend in Rogue Sun lore into the mix. It cements their pairing into a dangerous mission. This results in big action and a devastating loss. The dialogue brings out the painful remorse as they deal with a tragedy. Its’ fallout is a bittersweet finish. Caleb’s parting moment connects on all levels. It closes one door for now while another one is kicked in. The final page leaves room for another guest to stop by to make an impression. The writing pulled out all the stops for this one.

Abel and Marques give Medieval Spawn a proper welcome to the Massive-verse. The full page monster fight sets a high bar. It showcases his skills while establishing motives. This moves events to the first run-in between lead characters. The art showcases their skills in a brush-up. It is quickly squashed as a threat is presented before them both.

Readers watch a solid full page image introduce The Withered. The panel set-up walks all through her twisted backstory. Marques’ coloring gives the evil figure new life. The usage of Black, Gray and Red make the panels pop. It sets up for the larger battle ahead. Once the main event begins, the art elevates the throwdown. Pacing flies as fast the blows thrown. A devastating loss catapults the ending of the fight. Emotions are high going into the final pages. Readers do get another gift on the final page. A full image shows someone crashing the party teasing what could be.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.4

Medieval Spawn crashes into the Supernatural world of Rogue Sun in a thrilling manner. Parrott and Cotton take readers on one hell of a rollercoaster ride. Abel and company construct fantastic images fitting for such a monumental story. Fans will have much to be excited about when they pick this issue up.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #9 (DC COMICS)

The end is here for the Green Lantern Corps. Starbreaker and his corps stole the emotions powering Lantern rings. This resulted in a reign of terror onto the universe. It has challenged the Emerald protectors in ways never thought possible.

After the Sorrow Lantern was destroyed, a major blow was dealt to Starbreaker. It was not enough. A sacrifice was made to unlock the energy of the Central Power Batteries. The other Lantern corps are reactivated. Power is back in evil hands in some cases. The ends justified the means as the fight now comes to Oa.

For the fate of the universe, there is no room to fail.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #9 by Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Daniel Henriques, Adriano Di Benedetto, Matt Herms, Arif Prianto, Lee Loughridge, Trish Mulvihill and Dave Sharpe concludes “the Starbreaker Supremacy”

Let’s take a closer look at this final story chapter.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

There is much to break down with this finale. The writing doesn’t hesitate in dealing with John Stewart’s call. It brings out the shocking reaction of Stewart’s sacrifice. There is little time to process this plot as the fight comes to Oa. Pacing speeds events up and rightfully so. This is a war of epic levels about to arrive. Does it hit the landing? Readers will be presented a strong case of why the answer is yes.

The story goes into a head-on action sequence. If looking for action, this book displays many examples. There are key moments tied into the GLC lore. It presents a solid surge into to overall conflict. The writing does push for the resolution in a unique wat. At times, it feels rushed. Once events slow down in fallout, the call makes more sense. There isn’t a huge “WOW” moment for the conflict end. It is more subtle in delivery. The closing pages mirror this feel. There is some reflection on what transpired but may leave some questioning the lasting impact. Readers will have much to say about the final page as a new phase of the GLC starts now.

The art kicks events off with the speedy race back to Oa. Once landed, the emotional shock of Stewart’s call starts appearing. Hal Jordan’s disbelief shines in these panels. It doesn’t have much time to grow as the fight hits home. From this point, the art gives readers what they want. It’s nothing but fast paced action from here on out.

A two page splash brings readers into the battle. It’s everything they could want in such a chaotic scenario. There are some quick side-drama panels which only add more weight to the fight. The action picks right up from here. Readers watch as many of their favorites get much needed panel time against Starbreaker’s crew. This ultimately leads into the fight finish. The art shows the heroes’ play to win. It explains their call as this starts a domino effect to end with. The epilogue brings out more heartfelt reactions of what transpired. It might not be enough for some to cement the finish. They will have more reaction to the final page. The full image reveals someone who will have major questions surrounding them next issue.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.2

“The Starbreaker Supremacy” concludes with a definitive finish, but not without its flaws. The writing gives readers many moments to cheer about. There’s plenty of big action courtesy of the art team. How it finishes feels lacking in certain degrees, but that will be up to readers to decide on. Either way, a new era of GLC starts with the final page and a new outlook coming.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s unfolding now.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #13 by Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, Erick Arciniega & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kelly has really moved Parker out of his comfort zone with this chapter. Having him lead a motely crew of captured aliens makes for a unique dynamic. Seeing Rocket Raccoon’s sharp wit battle with Parker’s logic is a fun read. This moves events enough to circle back to their original dilemma. Starblood is captive to this group. What is his fate? The answer harkens back to the Spider’s DNA.

Readers watch as the debate rages on. The writing pleads a few different looks before deciding. It leads into a present day problem. In dealing with The Black Order, readers see how this “team” is in over their heads. Pacing does jump a bit during these moments. It doesn’t hamper the experience but backs up Parker’s stance. The conclusion teases a more traditional finish. Readers where this story could go. However, Kelly does throw in a sudden change with the final page. Seeing where this choice goes will be enjoyable to follow.

Larraz has quickly mastered how to do Spider-Man action scenes. The opening battle is electrified with a spectacular full page image. Seeing the eclectic group on the attack should be a crowd pleaser. This gives way to the past decision about Starblood. The art shows how certain characters have a strong reaction to his fate. It also provides some comical moments via Rocket. His mannerisms are show stealing.

The action images will be the ones most talked about. Readers will be impressed with Raelith as she fights. A full page shot nails the landing as the fight grows. This momentum carries into the main event portion. Larraz and company welcome in Black Dwarf via near full page. This speeds events up as Spidey takes the fight into his own hands. There’s plenty of fast-paced panels to maneuver through strikes. It leads to a shocking image that ends the conflict. The closing pages tie up loose ends before the end panel shakes things up. A lone image with few words drives home how this story is far from over.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The space escapades of Peter Parker takes a dramatic turn in this latest chapter. Kelly weaves the self-doubt in-between the chaos with the writing. Larraz and the art team shine with their beaming panel pieces. The last panel will shake up the stat quo further as this run continues to impress.

ABSOLUTE EVIL #1 (DC COMICS)

One year ago, a new world came into the forefront of comic fans. It represented a true form of evil. Darkseid has left the DCU and created a universe all his own.

This has produced bold versions of classic DCU heroes. Their journeys fight for truth, justice and a better tomorrow has become more deadly. Some would say it has been absolutely diabolical on their challenges.

With the heroes on the rise, how do their enemies maintain their control? By any means necessary.

ABSOLUTE EVIL #1 by Al Ewing, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Romulo Fajardo Jr. & Tom Napolitano welcomes in a new phase of terror into the Absolute Universe.

Let’s take a closer look at what has unfolded now.

ABSOLUTE EVIL #1 by Al Ewing, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Romulo Fajardo Jr. & Tom Napolitano (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

What a tangled web has been spun here. Ewing throws in many combustible elements into this twisted view. The opening depicts a seedy tone as some familiar faces enter the picture. The writing moves events into the new dynamics of relationships. One that is very similar to previous times is that of Oliver Queen. Readers see how Mr. Queen tries selling the notion of fighting the good fight. Unfortunately, no one is buying.

This becomes very crystal clear when a meeting takes over. Featuring the very elite of rogues, readers watch as the egos becomes enamored at their past and future. Ewing takes chances with new visions of more heroes. This drives home how vastly different this world is.

It takes a backseat to a very violent delivery. Readers can only watch in shock as the meetings’ proposal takes a grim twist. As intense of a point this makes, one character steps into an unimaginable role. The unlikely voice of reason starts breaking down more possibilities. A sharp delivery moves the dialogue into a new area. This pushes the dire agenda into the closing pages. Once their vision lays its foundation, a starling reminder is given. There is no happy ending in sight. All that fuels this universe is the quest for power. It is a true reflection of its creator.

Readers won’t be able to comprehend the final page. It is quite the mic drop moment. Had it not be for the epilogue, this would be the buzz of this book. A very polarizing figure makes his way into this landscape. What he represents for this world remains to be seen. No one will mind the wait as a future uncertain will have them locked in.

Camuncoli and the art team spare no expense as they unveil this dark world. The throwback opening full page teases enough for a larger payoff later. There is a sense of normalcy with Oliver Queen. Seeing his reactions when “Jubal” is mentioned highlights his anger. This moves away when the business meeting starts taking shape. The near full page panel brings the major players into the very dangerous spotlight.

Blending in brutal flashbacks along with present day reveals, the art shines. It brings more gravity to the uneasy proposal. Readers watch as their view of the hero counterparts slips further from their hold. It conveys the dangerous threat they present. This all goes up a few levels with a brutal two page splash.

There is no way to hide the cold visuals. It sinks further into reality with a voice grabs the floor. Watching this person’s expressions start to slowly break sends a message of dangerous consequences. This moves events into a huge two page splash. The meeting has spawned a greater threat than previous thought. Its’ epilogue can make a run for that claim. Readers watch as a new player enters via full page panel. How the heroes will respond here is anyone’s guess.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The rise of good in the Absolute Universe causes much concern for a few major players. Ewing crafts a dark vision of control and conquest with the writing. Camuncoli and the art team press into the unhinged look of Evil for a chapter that sets the table for a larger feast in the making. Just wait for that last page…

X-MEN #22 (MARVEL COMICS)

Times for the X-Men haven’t been great lately. Cyclops was arrested in a confrontation with Agent Lundqvist. Magik decided to go on a covert mission with some of the members. Their target: Trevor Fitzroy & The Upstarts.

The mission didn’t go exactly to plan. They walked into a trap. During the fight, Juggernaut crossed a line. With blood on their hands, the team now awaits Cyclops’ return. Chances are he won’t be thrilled about this.

X-MEN #22 by Jed MacKay, Carlos Fabian Villa, Fernando Sifuentes and Clayton Cowles sets the stage for the upcoming “Age Of Revelation” storyline.

Let’s take a closer look at how this issue fares.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

MacKay opens up with Cyclops getting his release from jail. Left with a haunting message form Lundqvist, his mood seems somewhat calm. This changes when Magik arrives for him. Their exchange tips off what readers knew was coming. One element that is hidden is Fiztroy’s reason of capture. The writing establishes the move as non heroic, but more of political strategy. In comparison to the other X-team books, this one maintains a more militaristic sense to it.

Fireworks do come sooner than later. The exchange with Beast and “Juggie” cranks up the intensity. Knowing a line was crossed, both argue their stance. It throws the reader a question of where they side. The fallout leaves Beast asking a theme very connected with this team concerning kills. Tensions are boiling everywhere as the story moves to its’ close.

Doug Ramsey shows up at their doorstep. Considering recent events, there is much pause on this appearance. It leads to a more out of character moment for Cyclops. With how he has been in recent years, this move is more awkward that surprising. It leads to a very dramatic close as a new era is upon the X-Men (again).

Villa steps in for art duties for this chapter. The opening chapter with Summers and Chief Robbins carries a casual vibe. It is interrupted by Magik via half panel image. At this stage, readers can see the tensions start brewing. This moves over to the Fiztroy segment. It is easily seen how buttons are being pushed. The space provides a great transition point for another face-off.

The conversation between Beast and Juggernaut doesn’t take long to explode. Readers watch as each panel conveys their views. A solid split-face image drives home their differing views. It becomes more gas on the fire once Cyclops returns. The art shows the team disfunction as he speaks his mind. Ramsey’s appearance throws more off via near full panel. His exchange with Cyclops brings a new arrogance to his answers. The team reactions are a bit more eye-raising. It takes nothing away from the final page. A full panel image sends everything into its’ latest event, ready or not.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

Who are these X-Men? Heroes? Killers? Something else? Those are some of the questions raised in this chapter. MacKay throws some conflicts into a greater scheme via the wriitng. Villa and the art team zoom in on the various takes before the end page. Once here, the X-Universe prepares to head into unknown chaos. Here we go again.

TITANS #27 (DC COMICS)

After Deathstroke returns, the Titans need time to recover. Their conflict had a personal wound left on Beast Boy. Needing time off, he returned to his “second family”. The Doom Patrol welcomed him and Cyborg for a visit that turned business quickly.

An old rival has emerged and taken Negative Man & Beast Girl. Zookeeper is back. Is the combined effort of Titans and the Patrol ready for this return?

TITANS #27 by John Layman, Max Raynor, Matt Herms and Wes Abbott continues the wild team-up of heroes.

Let’s take a deeper dive on to where events go now.

TITANS #27 by John Layman, Max Raynor, Matt Herms and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Layman plays up to the quirkiness of this team-up. The re-introduction to Zookeeper is a nice touch. Readers get a full understanding of who he is and why. This moves events along to its’ current dilemma. The writing lets Beast Boy shine while things fall apart. It serves as a solid refresh for his character. As solid as this moment is, it is eclipsed by another.

Cyborg’s heart-to-metal talk with Robotman steals the show. Knowing how very similar these two are allows the Titan to open up. The dialogue hits the major points of what his struggles deal with. Seeing Robotman be a voice of reason strikes a chord with readers. It helps to get the hero back on a positive track. This helps to assist in the main conflict.

The writing stages action very traditionally. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this. These moments come across very well. It allows for a few fun moments to creep in before wrapping events up. Readers watch as the door is left open for more meetings in the future. Once the story goes to close, everything has changed. It is a hard reset lending itself to a larger picture n the horizon. An enjoyable read never the less.

Raynor and Herms set up the Zookeeper sequence with a few different looks. Flashback moments have a varied coloring to the panels. The art leans in on the key reveals before it ends. The final result is a full page image that starts off this issue’s conflict. Readers watch as the heroes converse about best plans. It leads to a solid half page panel featuring a few transformations.

The weight of Cyborg and Robotman can’t be denied in their panels. Vic Stone is clearly impacted by Robotman’s words. They are subtle panels but nail the key points. This moves events to the main fight with the art letting loose. In dealing with changelings, the imagination can run wild. The near full page reflects that view. It helps to compliment the fast action and unique end to the fight. Readers watch as this portion ends on a high note before changing directions in close. The full final page doesn’t pull punches as the next round is taking a bold swing. Get ready.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The Titans/Doom Patrol team-up ends on an entertaining note before more trouble arrives. Layman pens a steady superhero tale with the writing. Raynor and Herms mix in some needed drama in between the action. It is a enjoyable set-up before darker times arrive for the DCU.

THE NEW GODS #10 (DC COMICS)

A New God is missing. Kamal is a young boy with limitless power. His mere presence caused High Father to take drastic actions. This has spiraled into a conflict between Orion and Mister Miracle on Earth.

New Genesis has its own issues. The peaceful planet was attacked by The Nyctari. Lightray was a casualty in the vicious invasion. This caused High-Father and company to seek refuge on Earth. Once here, a traitor has revealed himself. Serifan is working for Maxwell Lord.

They have stolen Kamal with plans to use him as a weapon. This doesn’t bode well for the Fourth World heroes.

The New Gods #10 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Simon Parr, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano continues with its dramatic odyssey.

Let’s take a closer look at where events play out now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The world of Serifan is brought front and center for this chapter. Ram V introduces him as a boy heavily influenced by American media. The writing slowly walks through the growing impact of his consumption. It leads to a sense of disillusion in dealing with others. This aura builds up to a heart-breaking present view. there is no question of his longing for the past. Sadly, his future is not looking any better.

The conversation with Maxwell Lord is sharp and unapologetic. It moves into a sad state of affairs with no good end in sight. This is a very big contrast from Orion’s court. The mood features him in his new role as Oathmaker. Readers watch as the adjustments are complicated to take. This moves events forward to try a rescue. Readers get a much needed shot of action as the search gains steam. The writing moves this along before heading back to a looming plot point. In this stage, the mood swings into a dangerous place. The closing page makes a loud statement towards the immediate future. Only time will tell if Orion’s group is ready.

Cagle and Segala takes art duties for the history of Serifan. There are many homages to American history. The usage of panels depicts how the child is absorbing this information. It will be easy for readers to start connecting with these pages. It ultimately leads to a sad farewell panel. Cagle and Segala deliver on the emotional toll taken before handing off duties to Parr.

Readers watch as the talk between Serifan and Lord eludes to much mistrust. The expressions given lead to believe a set-up has occurred, fitting the movie motive. This breaks away to show how Orion and company deal with the situation. The art locks in on Orion’s new role problems. There is little time given here as the action finally starts happening. A near full page shot showcases two heroes fending off much of their opposition. This all moves everything towards the close. The art sets the stage for a showdown in waiting. A full page image screams the danger lying in wait. It may have taken a scenic route, but it appears all roads are finally starting to come together.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

A look into a lost soul leads a heavily travelled issue. Ram V’s writing juggles many plots while continuing to build. Cagle and Segala present Serifan’s past with much sadness and longing. Parr takes the issue home with solid action. There’s no turning back now for where this series is heading.

MARVEL/DC: DEADPOOL/BATMAN #1 (MARVEL COMICS/DC COMICS)

What year is it again?! Marvel Comics and DC Comics have released a NEW crossover! It has been over 20 years since the "Big Two" of Comics pulled off a massive event like this. The last took place in 2003 with "JLA/Avengers".

Since then, both have stayed focused on building up their multi-media brands. That doesn't mean the fans never lost hope of the world colliding again (and without a vote deciding who wins).

Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1 kicks off the next wave of crossovers with two of their heavy hitters!

Let’s take a closer look at how this event fares.

Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1 - Cover art by Greg Capullo, Tim Townsend, Alex Sinclair. Published by Marvel Comics

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Anytime you bring in Deadpool to a story, it can have mixed results. The character has transcended the normal comic realm into something else completely. When paired with the Dark Knight, Wade Wilson shines in the absurdity of his world. The writing takes them into perfect "frienemy" territory. Wells hits on every punchline that mirrors the Ryan Reynolds portrayal. It is no shock to see how heavily influential that performance goes here.

Readers watch as the insanity of Deadpool caters to more elements of the Bat mythos. It results in a fitting response to the conflict at hand. Batman is written in more of a "Batman: animated Series" tone. There's a fair share of brooding while dancing in the more calmer stages. The fallout gives a solid close to their adventure. It leaves readers with a wide open door for where things *might* go in November.

The other stories are great compliments to the crossover appeal. Zdarsky's Cap/Wonder Woman story is a fun and heartfelt read. Kevin Smith returning to Green Arrow and Daredevil is just like riding a bike. His previous runs on both breathed new life into both characters. Seeing this meeting is a fun nod to those era. Everything else are sure to bring some smiles to fans faces due endless possibilities for more.

Bringing back Capullo for Batman is a fun throwback. Deadpool crashes the scene (literally) via full page image. The art highlights his delusional mannerisms . It offsets the stern, brooding face of Bruce Wayne. Readers see how Bruce burns a hole through Deadpool with each look. This carries over to another meeting of Gotham’s finest.

Batman meets Deadpool via a gorgeous full page image. Having Jim Gordon play referee helps to move the story forward. Each pairing keeps up the tense mood as the true culprit comes into light. Seeing Capullo’s Joker back via full page is another gem in this issue. Their face-off during dialogue pays a small homage to the “Death Of The Family” covers. It pays off to starting a frantic switch of events. Readers will enjoy seeing how Deadpool reacts to certain Batman/Joker confrontation.

The fallout sends everyone home happy. Panels encompass the combustible mix of personalities. It also leaves a few doors open to play a return of more to come. Every art team on the other tales give their own spins which shows how all these characters gel together. There's something for everyone with this issue.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

If this is any indication of what's to come, fans are in for something special. Wells leans into the pop culture aspects of the lead characters with the writing. Capullo and the art team shine in bringing Deadpool into Batman's' world. Readers will excited to see each panel unfold. Factor in the other side tales & this event lived up to the hype.

Let me know int he comments below your thoughts on Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1. Thanks for reading!

THE NEW GODS #9 (DC COMICS)

The New Gods have fallen. They have been ousted from their home by The Nyctari. Lightray was killed in their attack of New Genesis. High-father has been broken. This has led for a drastic retreat to Earth. It has not been an easy transition. This all centers around a prophesized boy.

Kamal could be a savior or destroyer. Mr. Miracle and Big Barta have protected the child. Other invested parties have interest in the child. Even with help from the Justice League, it may not be enough.

The New Gods #9 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Simon Parr, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano continues its’ space odyssey.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what unfolds now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ram V. gives some payoff for the construction of the past issues. With the Nyctari, they haven’t made a huge impact in recent chapters. Karok Ator gets a brutal flashback moment. It gives some insight into the thinking of the warrior. His dialogue with Grayven is sharp and direct. It sends a clear message to the readers of the dark vision. Cagle and Segala helm the art duties here and leave a cold impression of Ator’s plans.

Events shift gears to the fallout of Sur Tuin. The planet has been conquered. Raker Quarrigat takes the lead for this portion. Ram V sets him up a solid conflict with the Nyctari. Adding in another New God does help for the mission at hand. It does take a step back to the major points of the chapter. Readers watch as Orion and High-Father make tough calls. It hides a traitor in the midst. Once revealed, pacing speeds up. It gets the story into a much needed space. The story has been playing the long game. Readers leave with a true sense of direction going into an eventual showdown.

Parr handles art duties for the majority of the book. The conflict on Sur Tuin is presented with a more traditional superhero tone. There are plenty of action scenes for fans to be excited about. With the amount of set-up, the art focuses in on the reactions to what is unravelling. This centers around a few key players.

Orion’s new role is given a noble look. Readers see his speech visualized with an added motivation panel. Seeing Lightray’s helmet is a constant reminder of Orion’s pain of losing him. Another character that stands out is Kamal. Watching his interactions with the traitor create the uncertainty needed for the move. This is capped off by a solid full page of a shot fired. Parr works in smaller images and red coloring to make the scene pop. This moves events to the final page. Readers get a near full vision of the evil coming. It’s a bold move but one that drops an exclamation point on what’s going on.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

With the Nyctari in pursuit, tough calls are made with a traitor lying in wait. Ram V gives a dire picture with the writing. Parr’s images craft the sense of impending doom with a great heroic flare. The stakes have never been higher than they are now.

GRIM #24 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Death is unavoidable. No matter where you are in life, it is always looming. This is the same for Jessica Harrow. The daughter of Death itself and a human has had quite the journey. From confrontations with her Aunt Adira, The End and original Sin itself, it has all left scars on the enigmatic reaper.

Recently, Jessica has been trying to avoid fate. She doesn’t want to mantle of Death. Another has taken the throne by default. This leaves Jessica in new territory. It is one driven be her own choices.

GRIM #24 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS) delivers its’ pen-ultimate issue.

Let’s take a closer look at where events land now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Phillips splits this tale into two separate parts. The first locks in on the new Death. Marcel’s first assignment is bringing in an author. His dialogue with Desmond Pell is filled with compassion and understanding. Pell is very much against accepting his fate. Their interaction mirrors how sometimes one doesn’t get to finish their story. It is very touching as the new approach works to segway into the other side of the morbid coin.

Jessica and Time take center stage here. Under the guise of Jessica “living”, the story walks readers into a future uncertain. Phillips gives the audience a personal look at her new path. It is heart-warming with Marcel’s dialogue lurking in the background. Readers watch as the emotional gamete is covered. Events lead into a perfect ending to where the story needs to go. A final page says very little, while speaking volumes. The chapter adds so much perspective into an already masterful series. It’s another smash success.

As for the art, it’s another huge win as Flaviano and Renzi guide readers into Marcel’s sublime approach. It leads off with an excellent full page image. The conversation feels comfortable knowing the circumstances. The two page splash makes this point hit. Pell is presented as an agitated writer looking for the last line. Marcel shows nothing but compassion as the transition phase commences. This carries into the next section of the book.

Readers watch Jessica’s life play out. It is presented in a series of incredible full page panels. Each showcase Jessica at a new phase of her stat quo. Paired with the dialogue, it is sure to connect on all levels. Even with the brief dash back to Pell’s departure, Jessica’s time steals the show. It leads into the touching closing pages. Knowing how the past brought them to the present, the future will be exciting to see for the finale.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

As the times change, Jessica and her relationship with fate provide an incredible read. Phillips goes into overdrive to deliver an instant classic. The powerful art from Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano take readers into the deeply emotional journey to the final destination. It is a bittersweet lead into what will be an unforgettable finale.

X-MEN #20 (MARVEL COMICS)

What has Scott Summers done now? That is a normal question these days. Since the Fall of Krakoa, Cyclops has been a polarizing figure to many. The residents of Merle, Alaska have their opinions. One in particular has had one since the X-Men set up shop.

Agent Lundqvist wants to have a meeting in wake of the events of the Hellfire Vigil. Something tells me this won’t be very diplomatic.

X-MEN #20 by Jed MacKay, Netho Diaz, Sean Parsons, Fernando Sifuentes and Clayton Cowles showcase a meeting of two very opinionated minds.

Let’s take a closer look at where the drama leads now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

MacKay puts Summers in a very comfortable scenario. Lundqvist comes at Cyclops with a furious aggression. Readers can see the argument why. With the actions Summers were involved in, all good trust has faded (if it ever existed). The action doesn’t take too long to hit. Luckily it does. The remainder of the chapter teases a few sub plots without building to more.

Readers see how the Vigil’s events have left a solid trail of fallout. Beast, Kwannon and Temper all have notable page time. It serves as a good break from the fighting at hand. The Magik/Juggernaut dynamic has been the biggest surprise of the series. Readers have a healthy dose before heading back to the fight. Cyclops’ commitment (for better or worse) takes hold. It leads to omissions that have been brewing for a while. Once the fight is stopped, things speed to close.

The dialogue gives a few more verbal jabs in for the combatants. Readers can sense what Lundqvist truly thinks. It is met with a cold demeanor Summers has been known for. There is a very noticeable shift in the X-Man’s persona. In this moment, it is what fuels him. It also feels as Scott NEEDS to be angry to keep going. The final page leaves him and readers with a nice mystery to solve. It was better than a post fight press conference for sure.

Diaz and the art team lock in on the building rage of both personas. The initial blow is followed up by a direct view of Lundqvist ready to swing more. It helps to fully illustrate Cyclops dirty secrets and their ramifications. The close-up of the eyes tell a tale. This one is not going to end well for someone. The near full page of Lundqvist squaring up is prime example.

The other members have more emotional images to display. Their relationship woes take center stage. As mentioned, they give a break between rounds. As soon as the fight resumes, they all take a back seat. The six-panel page delivers on a great back and forth. It is followed up by a solid full page panel. This energy slows down in the closing pages. The art winds down events with subtle verbal punches. Both opponents have cold reactions until one hits a nerve. It helps to wrap things up with much to consider next time.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

The sins of Scott Summers are answered with a knock-down, drag out fight! MacKay unloads on the frustration of events with his writing. Diaz and the art give fans a fight for the ages. The Children of the Atom never cease to get readers talking!

FREE PLANET #4 (IMAGE COMICS)

“Free” is such a funny word. It is that means different things to various people. For the residents of Lutheria, it has taken on a life of its own. The Freedom Guard is trying to hold it all together. It doesn’t help matters when Jackson Crater is added into the mix. After one rebellion, are they in line for another one?

FREE PLANET #4 by Aubrey Sitterson, Jed Dougherty, Vittorio Astone and Taylor Esposito continues its’ layered trek through a new planet’s infant stages.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the free world woes.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Sitterson takes the guard into a few new avenues this chapter. Keen Surroko continues to be the most compelling figure in the guard. The writing shows him torn on direction with an idea of where to go. This leads into a violent revolt taking place. Readers walk through the political aspect to the uprising. It raises many questions as to properly handling the situation. Much like any conflict, there are few easy answers.

One eventual conflict brewing is Crater vs. Surroko. The inner monologue leads to indicate more dealings in the works. Considering how much of a wildcard Crater is, expect fireworks. From here, the story slows down for a few sub plots. Basil and Katja get some page time along with Ha’Neel. Each maximize their page time. This could be an issue with such a large cast. Sitterson leaves the readers with plenty of information to get the full picture. None raise more eyebrows than Gloria and Talun. Seeing their dialogue play out teases something as the issue wraps. There’s no question of the levels this saga takes readers to.

Doughtery and Astone waste no time in bringing the revolution to the forefront. Back to back two page spreads show the brutal uprising. Having the Guard’s comments in the corners gives a real insight into their thoughts on the fight. The scenes are very detailed and hold nothing back. It paints the unsettling view of Freedom’s true cost.

Once Crater makes his way into view, the one changes. With Esposito’s lettering, his inner monologue takes new life. It has a manic presence to the wording. This mirrors his uneasiness towards Keen. Their half page face off is a perfect set-up for a longer confrontation. Readers watch as the art attempts to cover the vast ensemble. Key players get a fair amount of page time to build their cases. This all gives way towards the political closing pages. The art displays the trading information as Gloria balances personal drama. Events conclude with a haunting small panel. Another very strong display of Freedom’s complete view.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

What happens when being Free isn’t free enough? That is the question posed in this dramatic tale. Sitterson weaves in the heavy weight of governing with the writing. Doughtery, Astone and Esposito put events in motions with excellent art. This series isn’t afraid to go into uncharted territory. It’s what makes it stand out on the shelves each time out. Don’t miss it.

Let’s take a closer look at how this case wraps up.

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #9 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters gifts readers with a very strong closing chapter. Orchestrating the notion of their return, the family’s motives are clear. Batman sees through their play. It reveals a sad truth. The dialogue paints the depressing sense of grasping for more. Seeing how the Grandpa tries recreating the past indicates how far gone things are. Batman works this to his advantage. Stealing the false victory shows a turn in favor.

Readers watch as the facade starts breaking away. Watters implies a slow burn style for the shattering of reality. The Dark Knight makes a final surge with time running out. His words keep landing shots. Readers start seeing the emergence of the Caped Crusader they know in present times. The verbal warfare ends in a devastating finish. Watters gives a tragic spin to the conflict. It hits on a few levels. The event leaves an dismal impression on Batman’s work. This leads into a satisfying parting shot. Even in defeat, sometimes good can emerge.

Sherman and Farrell work their magic yet again for this issue. A simple full image of a bucket of Bleach welcomes readers in. Once the story starts moving, its’ true meaning comes to life. The near full image of the family towering over Bats makes a loud statement. Seeing Grandpa stand and speak his peace ushers in a great flashback montage. Panel set-up continues to impress with this series. It almost feels like puzzle pieces trying to mesh for a picture. This method works wonders as the case progresses along.

The picture of Batman’s “torture” reveals the dark thoughts going through the family’s head. This leads into a spectacular two page splash. Everything from the colors to the literal face-off will wow readers. It moves the events into a mortifying air. The visuals of a tragedy scream the shock and pain happening. It’s followed up by an equally impressive full page image. Once in its fallout, the art locks in on Batmans’ frustration and failure. Readers loop back in for the final page. It’s a bittersweet full page image leaving some notion of hope for the future.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

PAREIDOLIA” wraps up with a somber and stunning final bow. Watters navigates through the mental chess game with excellent writing. Sherman and Farrell continue to elevate each visual to amazing new heights with the art. There is no debate: This is THE best Batman series at the shops.

SECRET SIX #6 (DC COMICS)

The line between hero and villain is a tight rope to walk. When Amanda Waller disappears from Belle Reve Prison, the world was put on notice. Six people took extreme interest due to past events. Dreamer, Gossamer, Superman Jon Kent, Deadshot, Black Alice, & Catman all have axes to grind against Waller.

Their search has put them in the path of Checkmate. The covert organization has their own plans for Waller. Some members appear to be going into business for themselves. Something has to give.

SECRET SIX #6 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands concludes its re-introduction to the DC Universe.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the intense finale!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Maines delivers on overdue emotional releases for a few members. Jon Kent has been pushed in directions he is very uncomfortable in. Even with the wholesome opening, the reality of Jay’s actions weigh heavy. This is paired with the current mess he’s tagged in. The banter with Catman is a real view of their world. This winds up breaking the young Kent’s patience. It clearly strikes a few nerves before switching attention over to Waller’s fate.

Once here, Jay Nakamura takes center stage. The dialogue brings out Jay’s unrelenting drive for revenge. This causes a huge problem with Dreamer. Their long awaited brawl finally begins. Readers watch as this spirals into a fight amongst everyone. It is quite the chaotic scenario. Maines brings out the heartbreak with Jon Kent. Knowing how high the ramifications are, one member makes a drastic move. This leads into a somber and painful divide. Readers can only watch as the strongest member is left with a large wound. The final page drives this factor home while leaving a sense of pause before bowing out. Suffice to say, there’s more unfolding here than where the issue ends.

Segovia returns for art duties for the finale. The opening page shows the evolution of Mr. Kent. It crosses many times before landing in the present. The conversation with Catman pours with tension. There’s never a moment where things simmer down. The same can be said for the Dreamer vs. Jay lead-in. After a solid start, a near full image swings big as the fight is on. It doesn’t take long for everything to fall apart on the mission at hand.

Superman hovering over Catman indicates the brooding anger boiling in Kent. This begins their throwdown. A two page splash brings Black Alice into the foray. The action ramps up a few notches with the following pages. It pauses for a full image of Jon Kent ready to end everything. Readers follow along as the slow breaking of a soul when the realizations hit. One member has gone too far. This leaves a few striking images has the fallout sets in. The closing panel leaves a glimpse of an uncertain future with many words left unsaid.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

Tensions finally boil over as the Six come to the end of their road. Maines’ writing weaves in the painful cost of their actions. Segovia and Beredo balance the action with the rage as one member makes a deadly choice. Once the dust settles, fans won’t want to miss where the unstable unit moves to next.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #5 (DC COMICS)

There’s no light at the end of the line. Middleton power stations are down. The city is under a blackout. Temperatures aren’t the only thing rising. The White Martian has unleashed the violence out of the citizens. As the city slips into the night, Middleton’s uncanny duo steps up to the plate.

It’s two against a broken city. Something has to give.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #5 by Deniz Camp, Javier Rodríguez and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou enters the darkness in its’ latest chapter.

Let’s take a closer look at how this all plays out.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #5 by Deniz Camp, Javier Rodríguez and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Camp shows no hesitation in taking readers into a modern horror classic. The tone is set early with a dog’s tragic murder. It matches the foreshadowing of other heinous events. Jones’ reaction is cold but necessary. Both he and the Martian know the truth of the matter. The narration paints the dark landscape perfectly. It leaves readers with a dire view of Middleton with no end in sight.

The looming uneasiness never leaves this chapter. Camp takes readers further into the madness with multiple scenarios. None may strike a larger chord than seeing Jones’ son with some dangerous candy. The play on the hidden danger only elevates Jones’ fight. Just when things seem stable, a massive curve is thrown. The event twists the overall picture right before the close. In its’ final moments, the story adds in key conflicts. All of which boil to a head with the final page. It leads readers with a clear picture of the true form of the Absolute Universe.

Rodríguez’ use of light and shadows is the huge takeaway from this book. The opening murder is presented in a very unique manner. Having the shadows tell their own story only adds more intrigue to a highly rich tale. With each passing view of Middleton, this amplifies. There are few breaks in this tempo. One of which is the focus on his estranged family.

The simple panels paint the fractures of the Jones. Readers easily see the wear on Bridget Jones. It doesn’t slow pace down for long. The use of orange coloring brings the next conflict into view. Rodríguez balances the coloring for an intense view of Jones observing the chaos. It transitions to the close with an extreme action. The maneuvering of the panels easily juggle the multiple plots. It all gets overshadowed by a full page image that is simply jaw dropping. The fantastic closing page manages the fallout as events sink further away. Another masterpiece of storytelling.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

Darkness has fallen over Middleton and there is no hope in sight. Camp’s superb writing challenges the breaking point of Jones and the Martian. Rodríguez & Otsmane-Elhaou continues to raise the bar even higher with the phenomenal art. This continues to be a must read series with the next level creativity behind it.

MARVEL KNIGHTS: THE WORLD TO COME #2 (MARVEL COMICS)

The King of Wakanda is dead. This has sparked the Dora Milaje to search for someone with answers. Their search has led them to Everett K. Ross. What Ross speaks takes their conversation into the past. It references a certain point in T’Challa and his son Ketema’s lives. All parties brace to what secrets are uncovered.

Marvel Knights: The World To Come #2 by Christopher Priest, Joe Quesada, Richard Isanove, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith continues its’ journey back to the past.

Let’s take a closer look at what is unfolding now.

Marvel Knights: The World To Come #2 by Christopher Priest, Joe Quesada, Richard Isanove, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The world through the eyes of Ross is a disturbing place. Considering the places he has been, Ross is a very jaded and broken soul. The writing shows how he’s not afraid to dance with the Devil. It also shows the trail of mistakes made. Readers watch as the tangled web weaved with Noelle Adams provides dark humor and heavy drama. Priest doesn’t let Ross stray too far from his history. It’s not long before Wakanda comes calling.

Resolving the trial of combat isn’t Ross’s specialty . The writing shows how his actions affect an already unstable fight. Ketema and T’Challa’s brawl is unforgiving. The brash young man speaks with much anger in his voice. Knowing the wild history involved, readers can sense his pain. The writing never shies away from this aspect. It plays a good counter to Ross’ internal demons. Everything gets turned when the final chapter starts. A move is made that causes a direct ripple effect. How the final page is going to play long term. In the meantime, this mystery is only getting more intense by the moment.

Quesada and Isanove start off the art with two very different full page panels. The first picks right up where issue one ends. Seeing the brutality commence makes a statement. The following page makes a completely different one. Ross has his issues and this doesn’t back away from it. It plays into the dark humor mentioned previously. Ross’s life is anything but cheery from here on out. The panels with Noelle show his slow breakdown. Readers see how the verbal weight becomes too much and sets forth his new past. Unfortunately for him, his past won’t leave him alone.

The full page view of the Wakandan ship makes a bold statement. It leaves Ross questioning the actions. Readers get caught up on T’Challa’s time during this phase. The heartbreaking pain of losing a child is presented in an emotional flashback. This pushed the time jumping for a few pages. It was nothing that readers were lost in. With Quesada steering the ship, the panels moved very easily. The roads finally lead back into the trial of combat. There’s plenty of intensity to go around during these panels. Readers watch as this leads into the shocking end. A simple panel of two words changes everything. It leaves readers with a full final page that will have the shops buzzing. Nothing is pulled when dropping another exclamation point on this chapter’s end.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

The world according to Everett K. Ross provides many avenues of drama leading to a show-stealing end. Priest blends the humorous times in a heavily focused drama. Quesada and the art team shine in bringing out the pent up feelings of all involved. “The World To Come” is definitely one not to sleep on.

FREE PLANET #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

At what cost is Freedom too much? That is the question plaguing Lutheria’s newfound protectors. The Freedom Guard was assembled as the planet won their true independence. Balancing the multiple factors adjusting to the new world is one thing. Jackson Crater is a whole other combustible element.

What lies ahead isn’t getting any easier for anyone.

FREE PLANET #3 by Aubrey Sitterson, Jed Dougherty, Vittorio Astone and Taylor Esposito continues to blaze its’ trail of intense storytelling.

Let’s take a closer look at what transpires now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Sitterson throws the Guard into more uncharted water that come with heavy prices. With Lutheria’s Orchaleum being a sought after resource, many parties want it. The writing presents the Orouran Empire as the new contenders. Readers watch as they show no regard into going for what they want. Diplomacy isn’t their strong suit. It might not be the Guard’s as we find out.

Katja and Basil get some backstory before being thrusted into a diplomatic moment. Yrl-Ken, The Quadros representative provides friction in dealing with the upcoming threat. Sitterson plays this point right into the heart of the issue. A starflight scrap takes center stage as the creative team unloads their arsenal. The action will have fans locked in as the presentation is ambitious. It rolls into a more stable ending. Events end with a shadowy feel/ Knowing the moves in silence will speak volumes as Freedom’s cost is very steep.

Doughtery and Astone open up with a huge full page image. The Orounan Empire makes a loud debut. It is followed by a two page showcase that displays their unbending methods. The art switches gears to a more calm time between Katja and Basil. It serves as a reminder of a lost past and hardened future. The debut of Yrl-Ken is presented in full detail. Its’ one of this series strengths. There is very little left out of an ever changing world.

The majority of the issue is taken over a star fight for the ages. Readers see a two page splash assess the threat incoming. It is the tip of the iceberg as the fight is staged in a very unique way. There’s a series of two page splashes that come across (in this version) as if the readers are flying in the fight. It is a bold move but this series has never been afraid to go places. The panels never let up on the excitement until the fight is over. In its’ wake is a return to form for the guard. This leads into a very tense aura for the closing. Tensions are high as the struggles to maintain Freedom is weighing heavier by the day.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

The Freedom Guard not only has to navigate outside threats but ones within. Sitterson stages the drama with excellent writing. Doughtery and Astone gamble and score with an distinct look at a space fight in motion. The storytelling involved with this world-building is second to none.

RADIANT BLACK #35 (IMAGE COMICS/MASSIVE-VERSE)

The Catalyst War is in the past. Marshall Ward’s future is uncertain. After becoming the sole Radiant Black, Ward has walked into a new stat quo. The world doesn’t hold him in high regard. Nathan Burnett is on the west coast. Plus, there’s someone from the other timeline looking to settle the score.

His name is JAEGER. He’s adding to a body count. Next on his list is Marshall’s mother!

RADIANT BLACK #35 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Clark, Eduardo Ferigato, Marcelo Costa, Rod Fernandes and Becca Carey dives further into the Jaeger mystery with the latest chapter.

Let’s take a closer look at the Massive-verse’s latest!

RADIANT BLACK #35 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Clark, Eduardo Ferigato, Marcelo Costa, Rod Fernandes and Becca Carey (Image Comics/Massive-verse)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

One area of the Massive-Verse that has been needing attention is their rogues gallery. They have good antagonists but few reach the level of Shift. In a few short issues, Higgins and Clark have firmly cemented Jaeger onto that list of GREAT villains. Having him systematically attack is one thing. Making it personal with Marshall’s mother is crossing a few lines. This allows many themes to unfold. None greater than pushing Marshall out of his comfort zone.

The opening attack is pure adrenaline. The writing steps on the gas with the pacing. It leads into a disturbing moment of reflection. Jaeger’s depiction of Thalia Hall events sets forth more emotional blows on the fragile Ward. Even with the assist of a new character, readers attention never leaves the big showdown. There’s no hesitation in the punches thrown. The dialogue brings forth many buried feelings. It results in a steady finish before the closing. Once at this stage, the writing adds one more surprise into the mix. How this is going to play out should be something special for the Massive-verse faithful.

The art team doesn’t miss on starting off events with a bang. Marshall’s last minute save is rewarded with a near full page image. There’s no slowing down from here. Readers watch as the action picks up. Jaeger’s onslaught holds nothing back. After the full page decree, Jaeger’s motorcycle tricks cause a well placed transition to a more dramatic state.

Watching Jaeger recite the Thalia Hall events of the timeline establishes a dire mood. This revs up the action as Marshall attempts to fight back. His latest ally crashes via half page image. This leads into another invested throwdown. Where this fallout leads is to a more hurtful discussion. The panels never let Marshall’s guilt stop being on display. It pushes the fight into the finish. There’s a few near full page visions that wrap up events before the Lakeview epilogue. Marshall’s mannerisms go through quite a range before the last panel. Seeing what lies ahead throws everything in an uncertain place. One thing is for certain: there’s never a quiet moment in the massive-verse.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The Jaeger arc concludes in thrilling fashion. Higgins and Clark’s writing bring out the rage and frustration of The Catalyst War fallout. The art team gives readers plenty to enjoy with the action. There’s no doubt after this issue why the Massive-Verse is a must read each time out.
