SECRET SIX #3 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Maines throws a fun curveball in the re-appearance of Checkmate. The long standing DC covert organization gets a fresh cover while moving in shadows. Their manipulation of a senator show business is back but not without cost. Knowing how Waller’s involvement is such a critical factor raises stakes even higher. Mix that with the emotional toll of the “heroes” and it’s a powder keg ready to explode.

Sides are clearly being taken as Deadshot and Dreamer work their angles in the scenes. Lawton has had the most experience with Waller. The dialogue reflects that past with an uncertain future. His interactions with Catman carry the same sense. Dreamer’s confessions concerning Waller only drives a larger wedge between members. This all comes to a head with the closing act. Pacing helps kick events into gear. It also provides a surprise reveal as their game of cat and mouse just got more extreme.

Segovia and Beredo start the party with a full page image of the club. It’s a pace change from the views form Washington. Lurking in the shadows are the Six. Each panel fuels more uneasiness. The art throws a fun curve in as they change into their nightlife wear. It’s a calm moment before the drama ramps up.

The panels focus on the interactions between the teams. There is much tension between Deadshot and Catman. It falls short in comparison to the groups major issues. Jay and Nia’s distrust shines again in this chapter. Even with a quick pause, it doesn’t take long to force the action. Events start revealing the true nature in the club. It all boils down to a shocking full final page. The chapter closes with a great cliffhanger to lead into a more exciting path next go around.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

The Six take it to the club in their hunt for Amanda Waller. Maines’ writing keeps this group walking a tightrope. Segovia and Beredo play into the emotional damage with their art. Judging by the last page, time may be up for the group before they even start.
