With a small window of change open, Charles Xavier and his remaining team takes one last shot. Last issue showed at what lengths Xavier is willing to go to win. Is the rest of his team ready to pay the high cost of victory with him?

Rise of the Powers of X #2 by Kieron Gillen, R.B. Silva, David Curiel, Clayton Cowles (Marvel Entertainment) looks to answer those questions and then some.

Mr. Sinister has always been a problem to the X-Men. In this story, he has become a problem for the entire universe. Ten years in the future, Nathaniel Essex has now ascended on a whole new plain. Essex is Enigma. Xavier failed to stop the rise to power. Left with little options, Xavier seeks to rewrite history.

The plan is simple on paper: Kill Moira McTaggert before she realizes she’s a mutant. With her powers never manifesting, the Krakoan Era never is born. It’s a desperate plan, but so are the times they live in.

This chapter begins Enigma narrating the pasts of notable key players in Mutant kind. A Young Moira. Jean Grey. Cyclops. Xavier himself. Enigma knows what they all mean to his endgame. Xavier’s moves have peaked Enigma’s interests.

Stationed on No-Place X, Xavier holds court to Rachel Summers, Rasputin IV and Cypher. Xavier lets it known that his plan is the only option left. Listening in to the conversation is a captured Mother Righteous. One of the Essex clones, Righteous shrugs off the attempts to save. Xavier answers in kind and never responds.

Readers sit back as Xavier senses the pressure of failure. Righteous’ banter with the heroes only fuels Xavier’s plans. Once the talking stops, the moves begin. The action swings into full throttle. The pace never stops until the final pages.

Once the dust settles, fans watch as two major players are set on a collision course. Who will be the last one standing? The parting images of this chapter will definitely have fans talking. Brace for the start of an epic conclusion in the making.

Gillen leans heavy into Xavier’s desperation. The conversations with Righteous support the extreme levels. Throughout the series, that has been a notable takeaway that continues to grow. There is one great one-liner about “ants and Galactus” that will leave readers caught up in the moment.

The banter with Xavier and Rasputin IV is another strong point to the issue. A conversation takes place that is heart-breaking but reflects the dire times that exist. It’s a contrast to Moira and Nimrod. With the walls caving in, Gillen writes their paranoia splendidly. It’s another key element that balances ut all the big action taking place.

Silva and Curiel present some memorable points in this story. The background narration panels tie in the past and gives a quick refresher into the pages being told. Xavier’s defiance to Righteous boastfulness was an easy connection via their facial reactions.

However, The fight sequences will be the ones most talked about. It’s big action with near-full page imagery. These spectacular visions lead readers right into the final act. With a near full page panel to close with, the art continues to encompassing the “big event” feel and running with it. This leads to all wins for the readers.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The saga of the X-Men’s final stand strives forward with another excellent issue. With Gillen mixing in some touching humor along with the action, the intensity of Charles Xavier shines through. Silva’s impeccable art raises to new levels which fans won’t be able to get enough of. You won’t want to miss this one!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #41 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, the streets of New York City continue to be the battleground for Marvel’s criminal underworld. With the “fall” of Tombstone, a power vacuum opened and everyone is trying to claim the territory. In the crossfire: the citizens of NYC. The only defense: Spider-Man and a few of his “amazing” friends. However, the last time readers saw him, a new player entered the game: KINGPIN!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #41 by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna, Marcio Menyz and Joe Caramagna picks up where Wilson Fisk’s influence begins to take over. Let’s take a closer look and see how things fare now.

Last issue, Wilson Fisk, Typhoid Mary and an army of Hellfire soldiers confronted the unlikely trio of Spider-Man, She-Hulk and Tombstone. Considering Kingpin’s sphere of influence, this could be the make or break point of the Gang War.

The mood is tense as Tombstone and Kingpin begin to discuss business. With their children (Kingpin’s son - The Rose and Tombstone’s daughter - The Beetle) on a collision course, there is more than money at stake. Fisk wants to sway action for his son. Tombstone isn’t willing to budge. All the while, Typhoid Mary becomes infatuated with the heroes standing in the background.

The eventual explosion of action commences. Tombstone vs. Kingpin! Typhoid Mary vs She-Hulk! Spidey vs The Hellfire troops! Readers want action, they got it!

Meanwhile, The Rose and Beetle’s forces come to a head as well. The power play for territory is on! With the fate of the city hanging in the balance, the final moments elude that a victor might have been declared in the latest round.

Wells dives heavy into the action for this issue. That’s not a bad thing considering Kingpin’s prescence. The legacy he brings to the war speaks volumes. The conversations with Tombstones line up with the saying “Only Kings can speak with Kings”. Their demeanors reflect their positions in the criminal underworld.

The ending might feel abrupt when reading but it falls back on this theme. The “Honor amongst thieves” weighs heavy until the conflict resolutions hit the readers. There’s much to process between the battles which is only amping up more drama. Nothing but a win for readers.

Romita and company slowly build up the battle with the emotions of Tombstone and Kingpin. The family aspect rings true through the panels. Knowing their children are involved, the anger of the upcoming conflict is a clear connect. The action kicks off with an excellent split two-page spread spotlighting the boss fight.

The shorter panels featuring the conflict between Tombstone and Kingpin later in the book gives a sense of how both are all too familiar with this fight. From Kingpin smiling to Tombstone’s rage building, the art sets a high pace with the moving parts involved. This leads to a subtle conclusion with a 9 panel page capturing the fallout for all parties involved. It drives home the point that the war may have just had a huge turning point for readers to process.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

Wilson Fisk makes impacts the battle for New York City instantly with an action-packed issue. Wells lights the match for the combustible parties involved while Romita and company grant readers with excellent fight sequences and a mic drop moment to leave on!

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, it’s the beginning of the end for the Krakoan Era! Since Jonathan Hickman took the reigns of Marvel Entertainment’s Children of The Atom, fans have had mixed emotions. Some (like myself) have loved the fresh takes and concept of one nation under Charles Xavier. Others have yearned for a return to basics.

No matter what side you fall on, the next phase of mutantkind history has left a strong impression. But like all good things, they eventually must come to an end.

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #1 by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham ushers in the X-Men’s greatest fight with everything in the balance! Let’s take a deeper dive into what is happening now.

The issue opens up with Scott Summers being a prisoner of a mysterious figure int the old west. Scott’s narration leads readers along as this dream has been recurring for quite some time. Being presented to members of Orchis, Scott’s life is sentenced to death. As he’s led out to be hung, a familiar member of the crowd watches on. It appears to be Jean Grey!

As Scott is hung, he appears to be flying. Puzzled by his thoughts, Scott wakes up in a van He is being led into a courthouse in Paris. The crowd is unruly as he walks by. Knowing the danger looming, Scott tries keeping a strong reaction. It keeps him going and maybe fate will send some help.

Meanwhile underground, Colossus and Wolverine make plans to free Scott before his trial. Readers are gifted a throwback moment as the pair executes a famous maneuver.

The story swings back to Scott as he’s confronted by Alia Gregor and Omega Sentinel. The conversation turns into a cat and mouse play as Alia tries taking a victory lap at the X-Men’s downfall. Scott is matching her word for word. The banter gets ended by Sentinel as Cyclops prepares for trial.

Readers see how the X-Men family looks to rebound from the events of the Hellfire Gala. Major players look ready to fight back. New alliances are forged. Will it be enough to save Cyclops? If the ending pages have anything to say, Gregor’s plans may have won the first round, but there’s a lot of fight left in the X-Family.

Duggan ties in the classic plot thread of Humans vs. Mutants extremely well. The fear and anger can be felt the minute Cyclops leaves the van. Duggan gives a fair share of the story to Wolverine and Colossus. The friendly comradery between both shines as they make their attempt to free Scott.

The other members of the X-family make contributions with an excellent speech from Emma Frost. The closing pages look to add another wildcard in the mix but the writing is only in the beginning phases as to where their endgame leads.

Werneck and Valenza leave readers with some fantastic visuals to follow. The opening shot of Scott facing the mob reflects the anger and hatred for being who he is. The dialogue with Scott and Alia shapes the one-upsmanship both physically convey. Alia displaces bitterness as her crowning achievement. The other characters get some excellent visual panels.

The full page shot of Wolverine flying at the camera is sure to gather more eyes on the story. This all leads into a surprise ending that leaves no doubt war has been declared. With all the moving parts, Werneck and Valenza display nice pieces to reflect an already explosive tale.

The final battle between Humanity and Mutantkind explodes onto the pages of the X-Men’s last stand! Solid writing and dynamic art set a high standard with the darkest hour yet to approach.Trust me, you won’t want to miss picking this up on New Comic Book Day.

ARAÑA AND SPIDER-MAN 2099: DARK TOMORROW (Disney Publishing Worldwide, Marvel Press)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out a brand new novel from Disney Publishing Worldwide and Marvel Press that fans of a few notable characters in the Spider-Man mythos are featured in. The timing couldn’t be more perfect with the new “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” gearing up to hit theatres on June 2nd with one of these characters is featured prominently in the animated film. ARAÑA AND SPIDER-MAN 2099: DARK TOMORROW by Alex Segura, who fans know from such great stories as The Black Ghost, Blood Oath, Poe Dameron: Free Fall, and the Anthony Award–winning Secret Identity just to name a few. Dark Tomorrow features Anya Corazon who fans know as Araña and Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 on an adventure that stretches throughout the timestream.

Both of these characters have been around the Marvel COMICS Universe for a while now and have built up a very solid fan base. Araña made her debut in the pages of Amazing Fantasy #1 in 2004. From there, she has impacted a few Spider-Man events and even assumed the mantle of Spider-Girl for her own solo series. Miguel O’Hara led the charge in 1992 of welcoming comic fans to the 2099 universe as “Spider-Man 2099”. Since then, he has been a fixture in the comics scene by popping back in from time to time into the present day timeline. Pairing them together for the first time has fans waiting to see how they work together while facing more challenges than just the rogues of Spider-Man.

DARK TOMORROW is scheduled to drop on May 2nd. I was honored to receive an advance copy so here is my SPOILER FREE review of the unlikely pairing of two popular characters in the Spider-Verse.

ARANA AND SPIDER-MAN 2099: DARK TOMORROW by Alex Segura

The story kicks off with a great introduction into Araña as she handles a lesser-tier threat. Readers get a great introduction in how she deals with the threat. From here, Anya Corazon’s life and relationships come front and center all while trying to juggle life at Milton Summer High School located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Segura paints a vivid picture of how Anya is coping with school and seeing how others react to her other life in her role as a super hero. A great aspect of the story is her interactions with Gilberto, her caring father. He looks out for the best interest of his daughter but doesn’t know about her superhero life. This expands further when fate brings her into contact with a very special figure named Miguel Legar who opens her world to secrets that have a big impact on her life. It sends the story into a new phase as the focus dives in on the young hero growing in her role with guidance until tragedy strikes.

A major threat arrives on the scene (that Spider-Man fans should definitely know) and is amplifiesd even more when Anya must deal with losing someone who has become a mentor to her. Being unprepared for what’s coming is an overwhelming feeling of doubt that Segura challenges Anya with in the writing. It is an easy connection to readers who have witnessed Anya’s beginning as a hero. Can she find a win where she is adrift on what to do next. All the while, the looming presence of a dangerous Spider-Man foe is haunting Anya. The theme shifts to can Anya triumph over tragedy or is she now destined to fail?

Anya doesn’t have time to process as an event happens involving an object known as El Obelisco. The object becomes the catalyst for an even bigger mystery with Anya is in the middle. Where it leads is to a place she would never expect: Nueva York and home to someone that might be able to help Anya in her time of need: Miguel O’Hara!

Readers are given a great backstory on Miguel’s current state. Segura brings out many emotions from Miguel that bear some similarities with Anya. The experience factor doesn’t matter here. The challenge is what makes the hero move forward when they feel they can’t. Elements of the past follow Anya to this new era. It adds into the weight of the desperation of the heroes’ feelings, especially when a connection is made that shakes both heroes.

Heading into the final act, Segura brings all the major themes to a head. Anya and Miguel’s stories depicted here has been grounded with the themes of life after loss respectively. It brings out the best in both as they rediscover what it means to be a hero. There is also a great surprise presence that fans will be excited to see added to the mix. The conflict resolution plays out perfectly to reflect why the overall challenges felt so grave. It lives up to the motto made famous by Ben Parker way back when: “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.” The fallout concludes a fantastic story bringing into focus what Segura drives home with this tale. Readers will be very excited to pick this book up.

BREAKDOWN: Segura crafts an excellent take on this unique pairing of heroes and delivers on a tale for the ages. Both main heroes are given an ample amount of time to have their individual stories explained to new readers who may not be familiar with each. The structure flows smoothly, moving things right along without taking anything away from the overall picture.  Heroes are defined by their actions. In this world they live in, there are losses and set-backs. Resilience is key to the blueprint of a hero. Both main characters go through this with loss and both find strength in others (and each other) to overcome.

One of the highlights of this book is the personal conversations that the heroes display with their supporting cast. Anya’s with Gilberto and Miguel’s banter with Lyla (his virtual assistant) spotlight their awareness that they are both still searching to conquer their losses and become stronger from them. Segura hits the marks featuring this in many parts of the story. They add another layer to each lead. It plays in even deeper when the main antagonist is revealed, adding to the threat of their actions. Knowing what this individual is capable of, the heroes need to find that extra drive to fight back. Luckily, they have each other to lean on.  

The dynamic between Anya and Miguel (Spidey 2099) has many instances of bringing out the best in each other to face the threat at hand. Segura portrays different roles for both, even switching who is the seasoned veteran and novice rookie at times which pays off later in the novel. There is a moment involving a letter that captures that element superbly. It shows the effect of their partnership and is a moment that readers will have a strong positive reaction reading. By the time that its’ concluded, readers have no doubt that two heroes were forged thru this and are stronger coming out of conflict.

FINAL POINT: ARAÑA AND SPIDER-MAN 2099: DARK TOMORROW by Alex Segura brings out the best of what defines being a hero with two popular characters of the Spider-Verse leading the charge. The story is filled with great surprises along with superhero themes lead by Segura’s phenomenal writing. Readers see first-hand how insurmountable odds and personal setbacks are tackled head-on showcasing what is a fantastic read that shouldn’t be missed.
