ODPH podcast Interview: BRIAN BALONDO (POCUS HOCUS, GRANDMA CHAINSAW)

Welcome to a special edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have a special interview with a creator whose latest project is currently in the midst of another monster campaign on Kickstarter! Based out of the Philippines, BRIAN BALONDO has been the visual architect to the Top Hat Studios team since its’ debut issue of Pocus Hocus in 2021. Since that point, Brian and the rest of the team has gained more fan buzz and followers thru their DIY approach to comics. With a huge hit on their hands with Pocus, Balondo teamed up again with Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz for 2022’s GRANDMA CHAINSAW. With his busy schedule, Brian managed to sneak in some time with the ODPH to talk about his life in comics. Here we go!

ODPH Ken: Hey Brian, thanks for taking the time out to chat and congrats on the new campaign

BRIAN : Thank you and yeah, the team and I are very excited about the latest Pocus Hocus Chapter.

ODPH Ken: Definitely an exciting time, but let’s go back to the beginning and just how did you get started into comics

BRIAN : The very first comics project I did was from an independent group here in the Philippines. It was only released in a Comic Con here. After that, I get to do another independent book titled Starburn and it all started from there.

ODPH Ken: What artists would you say have influenced you the most and why?

BRIAN : Hmm… probably Olivier Coipel and Dike Ruan are my biggest influences in art style. They’re incredible. However, Junji Ito is my main influence when it comes to everything horror.

ODPH Ken: And after that start, how did you connect with the Top Hat Studios team?

BRIAN : Allen Dunford was the one who contacted me and asked if I was willing to work on Pocus. I wasn’t able to accept at first as I was currently working on a project but I was really glad that they have waited for me. It has been a blast since I've started working on every Top Hat project.

ODPH Ken: What are the biggest challenges of communication with the team since you live world's away?

BRIAN : Actually, there's no challenge at all. I can easily talk to them through messenger and email. Sending files is a no hassle either. You would think there would be some kind of issue, but we’ve made it work (looking for something to knock on).

ODPH Ken: Over the past few years, Kickstarter is become such a huge movement in the land of comics. What is your feelings towards the entire process and now with another book heading that way?

BRIAN : I’m always excited and scared on every Kickstarter project we have. That feeling of being not knowing on the outcome of every project, but it’s good motivation to make the best book possible.

ODPH Ken: Pocus Hocus is such a unique book. What was your first reaction to reading its’ pitch to join?

BRIAN : Actually, I was amazed and curious at the same time. I was excited to know what could happen next as the scenes plays in my mind.

Credit: BRIAN BALONDO (TOP HAT STUDIOS)

ODPH Ken: Pocus Hocus was a huge success, what was the feeling of going into Grandma Chainsaw?

BRIAN : I think excitement first comes to mind. I've always wanted to do a project like Grandma Chainsaw. Just everything horror with mystery always keeps me intrigued.

ODPH Ken: Now doing two back-to-back horror books, what do you think the biggest difference between the books?

BRIAN : Hmmm… the biggest difference maybe is the theme. In Grandma Chainsaw, we see a lot of horror and gore while in Pocus Hocus we have a really fun adventure with a touch of horror. So, yeah… I’d say the themes really separate the two, but I enjoy doing both of them.

ODPH Ken: With all the buzz around these characters, is there any other characters you’d really want to work on if given the opportunity?

BRIAN : This is a no-brainer for me. My dream projects are Batman and Hellboy.

ODPH Ken: Before we let you go, can you say any future plans for you and the team?

BRIAN : Well, we are currently working on new issues of Pocus Hocus and Grandma Chainsaw. After that, We also have some plans for future projects but I really can’t speak about those today. All in good time though.

ODPH Ken: Brian, thanks for chatting with us and all the best with the future projects.

Brian : Thanks Ken! This has been a blast!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

When a supernatural threat emerges so strong that it draws in the likes of Shadowman, Persephone, Dr. Mirage, PUNK MAMBO, and the Eternal Warrior, readers know there’s a huge deal unraveling within this story. Exarch Fane has unleashed Hell on Earth with “The Dark Feast.” The Feast presents sacrifices to the Book Of Shadows, a dark an powerful weapon in the wrong hands. The team has split up to take the fight to Fane, but he is preparing for the next phase of the feast.

This issue opens up with Fane conversing with the literal figure of the Book of Shadows, the Taleteller. Fane and Taleteller speak of the sacrifice needed to grow their power. Meanwhile Dr. Mirage and The Eternal Warrior make their way to the Veil of Death in pursuit of ending the book once and for all. Their destination: Fane’s castle. The rest of the team has been tasked with stopping Fane’s army on the ground level.

How does the team fare this go-around? Mirage and Warrior make their way inside the castle but what they find throws the initial plan out the window. A rash decision to end Fane’s plan turns out just making things worse. There is little improvement for the other members as they are greeted head-on by Fane and his army.

What causes the change in plans at the Veil? Can Mirage and the Warrior handle the new threat? Plus, Fane has his sights set on a certain member of the team. What could he possibly be up to? Readers get those answers plus a shocking moment to cap off this issue moving to the finale.

Bunn paces things out well, giving the team enough panel time to tell their stories. The Veil portion features the conflicting personalities of Mirage and the warrior, which makes for some noteworthy moments. Gilad’s irrationality for waiting plays out well to Mirage’s cautiousness. There are also great moments between Mambo and Persephone tying back to Bunn’s Shadowman series, which adds another level o drama to the group. However, the bigger plot point is Fane’s plans for the one member of the team. Without spoiling, there are some questions to be had and Fane’s manipulations work well to progress the story forward.

Cifuentes’ art captures the horror aspect of the story, primarily with the Veil portion. the sights seen when the pair of heroes make their way thru the castle jump out. They push the story forward with the darkness surrounding the Book. Some panels hold nothign back and elevate how twisted Fane’s intentions are. There are some great action sequences thrown in for Shadowman’s team with a cool final image tap things off for this chapter.

FINAL POINT: Book of Shadows #3 sets in motions an endgame that will test this eclectic team of heroes of their personalities don’t get the best of them first. DAMN THEM ALL #4 by Simon Spurrier, Charlie Adlard, Sofie Dodgson, Shayne Hannah Cui, and Jim Campbell has Ellie facing off with the mysterious Theo Bolster, a man who’s organization may be more than even she is capable of stopping their true agenda. After last issue’s conclusion, Ellie and her ally Dora are in enemy territory with no easy way out. How do the pair fend now with Theo and the secrets of the 500 club?

Editor warning: this book has some panels that might be too mature for younger readers. That said, let’s jump into the latest chapter and see where Ellie and company take readers now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

First and foremost, check out that DAN MORA cover!!!

In case you are new to the story, Ellie has now been tasked to fill in the vacancy caused by her Uncle Alfie’s mysterious death as the only one to stop the 72 devils of the Ars Goetia from running wild over this world. The mission is so simple on paper: send them all back to Hell by any means possible. Execution? well, that’s another story. Luckily, Ellie has an ally in Dora, an officer with a complicated past with her uncle Alfie. Now accepting the duties of her uncle, Ellie sets forth to complete her mission.

Since she started in the role, Ellie has come across many unique characters such as Pruflas, who provides some much needed information about what is happening. Demons are now running amongst the earth via coins in the possession of various humans. Some with more noble intentions than others. Last issue saw what happens when the wrong person has a magical coin in their grasp. Ellie and Dora (along with Carlin, who’s there cause “reasons”) investigate Theo and the 500 club’s headquarters. Walking inside, the trio is shocked to see bodies, and that Theo is in possession of many coins like easy candy.

This issue opens up with a recap of Theo’s origin. Readers witness the 500 club conjuring Andras, a huge owl-headed demon who takes care of a few members before removing Theo’s eyes which much pleasure. The story then shifts to the fallout from there and a sub-plot involving Abshir, a man who fell from grace as London’s mayor. From that break, Ellie and Theo start debating about the ”big picture” involving the coins and Theo’s involvement in her uncle’s death. The result is Ellie taking a swing and busting Theo’s nose. The action is countered with Theo showing off what power he has at his disposal, healing from the attack. With Ellie not joining Theo’s vision, he dismisses her and Dora only to provoke a demon attack outside the headquarters.

With Theo waiting to make a scene, he causes a demon battle outside by forcing Frankie Wax (mob boss who Ellie now works for) to use his coin in battle. The visuals are insane, but what’s even more wild is ho this encounter ends. Nobody sees what is about to unfold coming but readers are in for a crazy conclusion of this first arc and a sense of direction for the book moving onward from here.

Spurrier drops major moments throughout this issue. Seeing the game he’s trying to play with Ellie has a great dynamic to watch. Being in the position of power he’s in, Theo isn’t feeling any true threat from Ellie. His ego drives him to start the spectacle outside the headquarters. It’s equally matched by Ellie’s counter attack to his move. The mental chess game played out well for readers to sit back and watch. Theo not realizing what Ellie was setting up heading into the closing moments sets them on an inevitable rematch. The closing panels solidifies Ellie has taken the legacy of her uncle as her own, for better or for worse and that’s a big win for readers of this series.

Adlard brings this supernatural world to life with vivid imagery. Andras’s debut felt like the big moment it was. How he initially attacks Theo played out as a driving point of Theo’s character later in the story. The strongest art was the demon battle outside the 500 estate. Seeing the “Legion Of Inferior Spirits” play out on panel worked for crafting a big time frame in this story. One additional component of this book is the note breakdown of demons thrown in to explain to readers. It gives an added piece to an ever growing cast. This worked magnificently in explaining the huge figures involved in said battle. The final image in closing is one that is defining of the character and where Ellie looks to be taking her mission moving forward from this experience.

FINAL POINT: Damn Them All #4 pushes Ellie Hawthorne to her limits with a protagonist with much sinister motivation behind him and his organization. Spurrier, Adlard and the team delve into this dangerous world with compelling writing and artwork to end this first arc and set the pace for the further escapades of Ellie’s quest to fulfill her legacy. The story centers around Grayson, a social worker grieving from the loss of his brother, and Wren, the only survivor of a gruesome family murder he visited earlier. Through the course of the first issue, readers see glimpses of another world where monsters seem to dwell. How this is all connected remains to be seen, but it is a factor that haunts Grayson from his past until now. At the conclusion of last issue, It appears as a cataclysmic event has occurred with Gray and Wren set into the future starting a new quest all their own. The quest: Save the world.

Where this issue starts is the time “After The Fall.” Wren and ray are making their way across a grassy field. Wren comes a Pika which she becomes fascinated with. As she chases the creature, a hawk swoops in and kills it. Wren’s reaction is pure anger and she morphs into a monstrous creature and kills the hawk. Only Gray’s command and staff appear to stop Wren, even if it takes a toll on him. As the pair advances on their quest, they encounter more creatures. They keep moving until they come across a militarized zone known as “Port Oregon.” While there, the pair try to sneak in unnoticed while gathering an item that could be a game changer. How this quest goes is anything but easy. Is there success for the pair or are there more issue lying ahead? Can Gray survive with what’s happening around him? Readers will not be expecting what happens next or what is presented with the final image of the book.

Brombel lays out fragments of what the future holds for the pair with a steady paced story within these pages. Seeing Wren unleashing the Behemoth was a big surprise when she became angry. What came off more shocking was the effect Gray’s mind was suffering throughout this issue. For all his efforts, his struggles became a focal point when they were progressing with their mission. Connecting the moments between both issues is going to be a fun ride for readers to decipher along with. The final moments will raise some questions but re-enforces there is a big mystery involving these two and will they make it to the end to figure it all out.

Robles welcomes readers to the new world post-fall with a new, visually brighter landscape to expand upon. Port Oregon introduced some new characters that gave some insight into how this new world is working. Very solid 2 page spreads to set up a few key moments in this issue. The one involving Wren unleashing Behemoth will be the one that stands out most to readers but the Port Oregon one gives a broader picture of how this area is working in the shadow of the fall. Wren’s reactions to all of this gave certain moments a bigger impact along with a final shot to close this portion of the story on. The series is just kicking into gear but there’s a great deal of intrigue to have reader’s attention for the long haul.

ASK FOR MERCY: THE CIRCLE OF TIME #2 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Last issue we saw the pair of Becky and Ratmir escape the danger in Rumania while finding out Becky’s secret. It was revealed that Becky is a vessel for a fragmented piece of Mercy, the hero recruited in the war to defend the Earth from monsters. Readers see how Mercy’s story begins to have even more layers than previously expected. At the end of the issue, the pair walks thru a portal heading towards the year 1997 for safety. This issue begins on a very different note….

Readers see the character of Archimandrite confronted by an aged Becky/Mercy, Ratmir (in creature form) and Alizarine, the protector of the planet Tertiarus who broke Mercy into the various vessels in a way to keep her safe from the Kroach, the evil forces who are trying to destroy the earth. There is a diamond type power source inside Archimandrite that Alizarine rips out of him in an effort to stop the breach from Tertiarus to Earth. When he does this, Alizarine causes a flashback to an earlier time on Tertiarus. A meteor crashes on Tertiarus and a collection of the planet’s noteworthy citizens go to investigate.

What do they find when they investigate turns into more than anyone expected. The meteor posses much power, but you know the saying “With Great Power…” Readers will see that question be answered with a bookend moment to set the stage for the next issue. The story is only just getting started but it’s been one to keep an eye on and doesn’t appear to be slowing down soon.

Starklings pens an intriguing second issue here. I wasn’t expecting the story to start out like that since there was a bit of character jumping for a new reader to the Ask For Mercy universe. However, once the issue gets going, readers will be able to see who’s on what side pretty quickly. Seeing the lengths Alizarine is willing to go to save people gives more depth to the situation at hand. From the flashback, readers see how these characters came to be with the overall conflict of the story. Getting this piece of the backstory will be crucial for where the story is now leaning towards .

Harding’s art dived into the sci-fi/magical aspect of this issue. Seeing Archimandrite, Alizarine, and the inhabitants of the planet Tertiarus was very well done. Seeing the creatures flying and how the citizens react around the meteor are standout moments. The full pa spread of how the standoff between Archimandrite and Alizarine plays off jumps right off the panel. There’s also another page later that showcases more time traveling that readers will be very excited to see. There’s much to like about this issue with the art.

Now MTG is not one of my stronger fandoms of knowledge so I made a call to Rich from the 3FNpodcast, who is very well versed in the MTG lore. Rich said “Ajani is one of the most beloved Planeswalkers in all of magic. Magic players who wield white mana decks or Orhov decks will always make room for a good Ajani.”

This issue starts off with Ajani looking over Naya, his territory, when he is suddenly attacked by Jazal. However this turns out to be an illusion of sorts as the story shifts to the Naya Shard of Alara. Ajani finds out that some of his nieces and nephews are playing a game based off of a story of lore. Once aware of the story, Ajani decides to clear up some confusion and tell the children a story: What it really means to be a Planeswalker.

Readers are taken on a fun story with “The Tale Of The Endless Hunger” as Ajani and his friend Tamiyo help the people of Eldraine survive a threat. The story isn’t enough for the children so Ajani tells another tale called “The Story Of Shadows upon Stone.” With the children being still restless for more excitement, Ajani finally tells his story of Jazal in “The Tale Of The Lucky Hunt.” Readers will have much to enjoy with this issue and get treated to a solid epilogue to close.

As previously mentioned, I’m not the biggest Magic: The Gathering expert, but I really thought this was a cool read. McGuire does an excellent job introducing Ajani to readers of the various levels of fandom. Breaking the stories of Ajani into three small stories was a nice touch and showcased why this character is so beloved. Each story felt different but carried an overall theme. Pacing was never lost and seeing how Ajani interacted in telling his stories made for an enjoyable read.

The art teams did a stellar performance throughout this issue. Having various artists on the 3 small stories made each one feel unique. “The Tale Of The Lucky Hunt” really jumped out with the action sequences, even with how brief they were. The artists kept things moving along with nothing feeling too rushed. There was a lot of ground to cover and the creative team as a whole delivered on a read that will be very pleasing to Magic: The Gathering Fans.

From supernatural creatures to shady humans with ulterior motives, Kay’s life has been anything but normal since Mona crashed into her life. From saving the child, becoming her protector, dealing with shady characters trying to kidnap Mona and now leading her rescue mission as she (and Kay’s grandmother) were apparently dragged back into the Outworld, Kay’s evolved as an unlikely heroine trying to save the day. Last we saw her, she was making her way to the Drinking Dragon, the opening to the Otherworld. After going under water, she was pulled (by a mysterious hand) thru to the other side.

As she makes her way thru this landscape, Kay encounters more creatures rummaging thru her belongings that were pulled thru when her grandmother’s cottage collapsed thru the ground. Furthering her search, Kay finds more creatures with more items. It’s also alluded to that her grandmother saved her as well. With her lucky horse shoe of Cold Iron and guitar in hand, Kay makes her way to find Mona.

Along the way, Kay encounters a familiar face that reveals some information followed with a confrontation that’s been building. Where does the story go from here? Will Kay be able to Save Mona? What other problems arise in this new world. Readers will get those answers and more with a conclusion that will leave some questions to be asked.

Diggle writes a solid conclusion to this winding tale of magic and discovery. Kay emerges in this last issue as someone who isn’t backing down from destiny. Over the issues, she has become a surprise hero but with this finale, this stands out in the final standoff. This is all done while utilizing one of her strongest abilities that readers hadn’t seen in a while: Playing Music. The resolution of the overall story is a pleasant but fast-moving surprise. This shouldn’t be taken as a negative, but it’s something that stood out. After what seems like the main antagonist is dealt with, the story wraps up with some questions to ponder with the final panel.

Brokenshire lets loose on some fantastic imagery with this conclusion. Readers witness many new supernatural characters now added to the mix once Kay crosses into the Other World. Readers also see how Kay has grown thru the course of this story. Kay looks ready to fight and handle all challenges that await her in this new world. The confrontations hit with great emotional impacts as Kay does her best to fins and save Mona. Brokenshire also does a great portraying Kay using music to give her an advantage when needed in this issue. The final panel shot is a perfect way to cap off this portion of the story.

Overall, Cold Iron #4 gives a satisfying ending to a very imaginative story. Diggle and Brokenshire close out this chapter of Kay’s journey with some memorable moments and gives readers some questions to ponder if/when we will see these characters again. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story of Pocus goes like this: He’s a magician that is vying for his father’s approval and does one of the most rational things possible: sells his soul to a demon for powers. Unfortunately, Pocus never gets the chance to impress dad because he passes away before seeing him in action. Years later, Pocus is encountered by the demon whom he made the deal with cause said demon is in some trouble and needs Pocus to bail him out…or they’re both dead. Luckily, Pocus has an assistant named Emily who might be the only one smart enough to fix everything, that is if Pocus doesn’t screw everything up in the process.

This issue picks up where Pocus and Emily have now made their way into Hell, and after a warm greeting from some of the residents, have now made their way to meet up with the old friend: The Demon. Pocus unveils his plan to get his soul back and the Demon, well, isn’t exactly on board until Emily “convinces” him to reconsider. However, the Demon can’t help them out cause the soul is no longer in his possession. All the while, the longer the pair is in Hell, the more attention they are bringing upon themselves. Readers are in for a treat as Emily has done something that is a great equalizer on this playing field. A new recruit has joined the pair. Where does this lead them now? What figure makes a shocking return to Pocus’s world? And just where is Pocus’s soul now? Readers will have to check this issue out and find out!

Just when you don’t think Dunford & Radford can’t top the humor of the past issues, they find a way. The unlikely duo of Pocus and The Demon play off each other like a horrible married couple. The explanation of Pocus’s soul journey was a great laugh. It gives great balance to the horrible world they’re currently finding their way thru. Readers will also see another great conversation with Pocus and a familiar face late in the issue. The moment is big and goes they way long time readers might think. It doesn’t take anything away from its impact. This issue might actually be a stand-out for Emily as every action she takes has bigger meaning than the last. There’s a lot to enjoy from the writing.

I have no idea where Balando comes up with the imagery of the creatures here, but DAMN, he delivers! They are all horrific and disturbing…pretty much what you think Hell would look like. The Demon is unleashed here for a good segway in this story and those moments stand out. The new players also have grand introductions to the readers that can’t be missed. Another noteworthy portion of this book is how Jasen Smith uses colors. The only character in this issue still in Black and White is Pocus. More than likely, this is because he has no soul, but it’s a solid touch to factor in with the art. Another quality issue!

Overall, Pocus Hocus continues to be the perfect blend of humor and horror. Dunford and Radford mix in more “serious” moments with Pocus’s quest but it takes nothing away from the overall energy of what they’ve been creating over these past few issues. Balando’s art gives a superb perspective to the dark story with balanced fun moments that are sure to please. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

A play is made by Mary to acquire something that could be the turning point in this entire struggle. It’s a risky move but appears to work in favor. With this weapon in hand, Mary presents it to one of he King Arthur’s and their court. In this exchange, Mary finds out the truth behind one of these so called “kings.” The reveal is very well done and the fallout becomes even better. All of this is relayed to Bridgette, who’s planning on strategy since the Christmas Day truce is over.

The heroes make their way to parliament Square to try undoing King Lear’s magic. The resolution of this is one for the ages. All the while, readers see an epic battle of two kings which ends in a very shocking matter! Does Bridgette’s plan go off without a hitch? In this world of magic , no bet is a safe bet. As readers will find out, no good deed goes unpunished as there’s a massive change no one saw coming…and a final one was ready for! Trust me when I saw, this issue doesn’t disappoint and there are so many crucial moments that need to be read rather than spoiled.

Gillen hits the gas pedal with moving into the final act with this issue. Bridgette ad Mary working together was one thing, but seeing the plan come to fruition was a wild ride. The backstory on one king was a great read and added to the tragic tale that can only come from this saga. In a game of kings, there can only be one. The storytelling hits on the marks. Even when she thinks she has the answers, Bridgette shows flaws that only add to the story overall. The final sequence of events deliver on the drama and no one is ready for that final page.

Mora continues to showcase why he’s arguably the best artist in comics right now. The action sequences hold nothing back. the attention to detail shines thru. The story of the one King is extremely well done and the imagery really conveys the emotions felt by its narrator. Seeing Lear make his move was another strong point to the book. When moments like this jump off pages, readers know that they have much to enjoy with the story. The final image of the book drives home the point the story is near the end. Expect much buzz from the fan base after reading this one.

Overall, Once and Future #28 sets the pace for ending one of the best stories in comics. Gillen and Mora present a heavy narrative will excellent story and art to send this comic into its’ final stand. Don’t miss picking this book up at the LCS this week! It’s some of the best creative work in the business for a reason.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story is set around Kay Farragher, a singer who’s based out of the Isle Of Man. Kay struggles with breaking away from her “nowhere” life to chase her dreams. After singing in front of some children for Hop-tu-Naa (otherwise known as Halloween), Kay chats with her superstitious grandmother about the future until she’s called away to pick up her drunk boyfriend. En route to do a good deed, Kay’s life gets pulled into another unexpected direction.

While driving, Kay veers off the road to avoid hitting a young girl named Mona. The car she’s in is wrecked badly. Mona claims she is running from something. While Kay originally brushes this notion off, she quickly changes her tune when a face to face confrontation sets up the long night ahead. With no car and no working phone, Kay and Mona must now find a way to survive a dangerous night with no notion of how to fight back other than with some “Cold Iron.”

Very cool first issue. Diggle sets the tone early of this book will tie into the world of fantasy and the supernatural. Kay’s story is a very relatable one that readers can side with her on. Seeing how the grandmother tried warning Kay of respecting the mythology of the night was a nice touch. Once Mona appears in the story, then this book really takes off. It’s an unlikely pairing yet doesn’t seem to be too awkward in grasping the current situation. Seeing how Kay reacts to this new world she’s walked into is going to be exciting to follow. The book also has a great cliffhanger ending for where this story goes next.

Brokenshire does a great job setting up this place of mystery. There is always a tense feel to the panels after Kay finds Mona that doesn’t let up the rest of the story. This is balanced out with Mona’s fear of whatever is looking for her to Kay’s flipping of emotions as the story progresses. Seeing Kay’s turn to panic after doubting her grandmother’s warning adds to the heightened emotions of the pair running for their lives. Readers will sense the horror movie-esque feel with this book and be very locked in for the remainder of this story of myths and suspense.

POCUS HOCUS #3 (BAD BUG MEDIA)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! On this edition, one of my favorite indie books has returned!!!! Pocus Hocus #3 by Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balando, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz for Bad Bug Media continues the wild and outrageous adventures of everyone’s favorite soul selling magician Pocus Hocus! The previous issues have been quality reads mixing in humor and horror. Issue #3 just wrapped up on Kickstater & the book is about ready to hit readers’s hands. Let’s not waste any more time and jump into the latest issue, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Pocus and Emily, his magic assistant are dealing with the mess Pocus made. The mess you ask? Well, when Pocus sold his soul for becoming the world’s greatest magician, he didn’t realize he was forever tied to the demon. Now that his benefactor is caught up in some trouble, Pocus decided to remedy this situation by….making it worse as only he can! The only voice of reason is Emily who insists they have to try making things right. And how do they do this? By going to Hell looking for the demon himself!

While there, Pocus and Emily attract a LOT of unwanted attention. None of which is trying to make a warm welcome for the pair. The first “friend” they meet sets the tempo for the rest of the issue. From there, the pair goes into another wild adventure that, without spoiling too much, will leave readers very amped up for the next issue. If you’ve been with this book since day 1, you’ll really enjoy this issue. If you’re just joining now, prepare to go back and track down the previous 2 issues. It’s THAT fun of a read!

What other book can have a character yell “SWEET BABY SATAN” & you immediately start laughing at the panel? Dunford & Radford create a very unique version of Hell within these pages. There’s a bit more humor in that setting than yo normally see, but that’s where the writers really shine with this issue. The well timed humor serves as a great counter balance to what’s happening. When meeting some of Hell’s residents, readers get some very funny moments mixed into the horrible setting. It’s really gives this book something that jumps out from a lot of books.

Balando delivers on another solid outing here. One big change from past issues with the art is the use of Color for the majority of the story. It gives a great visual for the change of setting for the readers. Another great touch was with Emily’s aura. Being in her own energy while in Hell gave some leverage to that moment in the story. It’s a small touch but does convey a bigger message to the overall picture. The rest of Hell’s residents all have a special look to them and this isn’t easy to pull off. The art team here made that look very easy.

Overall, Pocus Hocus gives readers it’s best issue yet. The writing is sharp & funny while given a great counter balance with the art. Making a stop thru Hell never looked more interesting. If you’re still not sold (for some reason) on this book, chec out the ODPHpod episode where Allen dropped in to talk about this issue. Make sure you check out their Kickstarter along with checking Bad Bug media to get your hands on copies of this book! Don’t miss out!
