G.I. JOE #14 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” In the case of Cobra Commander and Duke, it’s a “partnership” of convenience. Destro set up the Commander to be killed by Ripper and his friend. Considering what the Commander has done to the Dreadnoks, it wasn’t a hard sell.

The X factor in this plan was Duke. While out on surveillance, the G.I. Joe saves his enemy. Now both are targets and on the run! This can’t end well for someone, right?

G.I. Joe #14 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire & Rus Wooten continues the “Dreadnok War” saga.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest chapter!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson opens the chapter with the only calm moment of the story. Destro is full of confidence that his plans have been a success. The writing shows him at an all time high. In contrast, Cobra Commander is defiant in staying alive. His dialogue reflects a man trying to survive at all costs. Duke knows this all too well. Once a reluctant call is made, all Hell breaks loose.

Readers watch as the bullets start flying from here on out. It is total non-stop thrills from this stage. Commander never waivers as the odds become increasingly stacked. The same can be said for Duke. As opposite as two can be, there is a sense of duty around them. This moves into the closing pages. Once the calm mode sets in, the writing translates into a horror sense. Readers see another player has entered the game. It is a pivotal moment as a dangerous action is taken. How it plays out will be anyone’s guess.

The true winner of this chapter is Tom Reilly. The opening image of Destro addressing world leaders locks in his pompous attitude. Replacing Cobra Commander is easier said than done. While escaping with Duke, more drastic measures are taken. An incredible two page splash fires up the engines as the story takes off. The Commander’s half panel stretches his desperate fight to the letter. He’s not the only one getting some action this chapter.

Duke’s fight with Buzzer pops off panel. Readers will be all in for watching the attempted escape. Another gracious two page splash switches moment up perfectly. The chaotic scenes go underground in escape. Somehow, both escape the first round of combat. The art switches moods into a more horrific state. This builds off a fallout panel of the pair walking into town. Readers watch a full page image show the Commander defeated. A new player enters the field as there’s no rest for the wicked. Reilly’s art style is born for this series!

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Unlikely allies must find a way to survive as Cobra continues its hit-attack. Williamson throws caution to the wind with the writing. Reilly’s art elevates pages with each panel. The team is firing on all cylinders as this event continues to deliver on its’ hype! Don’t mis it!
