GREEN LANTERN CORPS #7 (DC COMICS)

You won’t feel a thing. That was the intention of Starbreaker. He found a way to take advantage of a fractured Emotional spectrum. While the GLC was working on new Central Power Batteries, they need a vital piece from Gemworld. The Corps was met with opposition while trying to get a powerful gem. It came with a heavy cost.

A Sorrow Lantern was lit in its’ place. Its’ power is devastating. Starbreaker and his forces have now wiped away all emotion in the universe. The universe is now fair game to be destroyed by the mad villain and his fellow sun eaters.

Their only resistance is a trio of non-organic Lanterns. May the odds be in their favor.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #7 by Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Arif Prianto and Dave Sharpe continues the “Starbreaker Supremacy” storyline.

Let’s take a closer look at how things shake up now.

*** POSSIBE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams and Hampton set the dire stage of Starbreaker’s work in the chapter opening. Seeing a planet’s inhabitants look in wonder instead of fear makes a statement. It begins a vicious path of destruction. Readers wait to see how the Lanterns respond. Unfortunately, the ramifications of the attack emerge. Seeing a broken John Stewart acting so numb is stunning from the fan view. This aura moves through more familiar faces before the trio steps into the light.

The writing reveals a different look to Hal Jordan and company. “Rational” Guy Gardner is a great way to showcase the damage done. Readers watch as the longshot plan comes into focus. It makes perfect sense for the Lanterns to attempt this. Alas, much like their plans, things fall apart. The final pages head the unit into a questionable area. Its fallout creates many questions as the universe trembles. Two issues in and this event is showing real promise. Buckle in for the ride.

Pasarin and Albert show the true terror of Starbreaker and his corps in the beginning moments. The full page shot of the mad villain destroying a sun. Readers watch as the horror unfolds with no ounce of emotion. Seeing the group celebrate add more fuel to a burning fire. It varies from the world of John Stewart. The art locks in on the coldness to Stewart’s current view. A two page splash shows more examples of the Sorrow Lantern effect before a rally begins.

Watching the trio recruit the other Lanterns offers images of humor and doubt. Seeing Aya punch out “Rational” Guy is a great moment for fans. This ushers in the rally attempt. The art never breaks for anyone’s delivery. It is very direct with nothing behind it. This moves to their destination. A full page image opens a few doors as the Lanterns scramble. There’s a god dose of some action in place. This leads into the final panel. Those familiar with Lantern lore will appreciate this immensely. Anyone just jumping in will have some good questions. More importantly, they leave wanting more of this story’s unique take.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

With the universe depleted of emotion, there is little to be hopeful for. The writing still takes a swing to start a Lanterns comeback. Solid panels move events along to a steady landing spot. There’s many more areas to take this conflict. Don’t wait to jump on board.

ROGUE SUN #29 (IMAGE COMICS/MASSIVE-VERSE)

Family business is always tough. It may even be worse being supernatural protectors. Dylan Siegel and Aurie Bell have been put in this position. Both are young and vary in experience. That means nothing to Mourningstar. The dark being has sent their minions into the Massive-verse. One of those beings is Noxious.

With an axe to grind against an evil company, he’s been on the attack. The Rogue Suns have slowed him down but his next target hits too close to home.

ROGUE SUN #29 by Ryan Parrott, Nick Cotton, Abel, Bruno Frenda, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey pits the pair against the villain with Juliette Bell in the crossfire!

Let’s take a closer look at the supernatural saga!

ROGUE SUN #29 by Ryan Parrott, Nick Cotton, Abel, Bruno Frenda, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey (Image Comics/Massive-Verse)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Parrott and Cotton throw a true moral complication into the story. Noxious is a villain with sound reasons of vengeance. Taking the fight to the company that killed his family crosses lines but readers sense the deeper push. Aurie’s dialogue breaks everything down. It forces the young hero to draw a line while getting the whole picture. For someone just coming into the hero game, she’s picking up fast.

As for her counterpart, it is business as usual. The writing catches Dylan defying his mentor role. The conversation with Brock adds some zip to the reluctance of Dylan. It leads to a fitting confrontation. There are a few solid twists in play, making for a stronger conclusion. It offsets the Marcus/Caleb side story very well. Readers watch as the fallout spins in a few directions. It shows both pros and cons to both Rogue Suns. The closing pages add more intrigue to the long game. One thing about this series remains true. Always expect the unexpected in dealing with the supernatural.

The art solely builds the Jillian/Noxious confrontation. Once the super powers come into play, the mood shifts. Aurie’s presences looks of patience to see where things land (after a punch). Dylan and Brock’s conversation locks in on Dylan’s building jealousy and fake confidence. Even as it gives away to Caleb and Marcus, the mood doesn’t differ away from the major conflict at hand.

Aurie’s next round of action doesn’t disappoint. Readers watch as the young hero goes for the save. The half panel scenes depict how she’s not ready for this throwdown. Once she switches techniques, the panels present a very surprising look. It also allows Dylan to make a grand entrance via near full page. The emotions carry over to the closing arc. Marcus and Aurie have a needed meeting of minds. It elevates the bombshell dropped in dialogue. However, nothing shows up the final page. A full page view gives an insight on what is about to head to Dylan’s doorstep (in time).

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

The “Noxious” story ends proving brains might be stronger than a sun stone. The writing throws many varying looks before revealing its true self. Solid art takes the audience through the ever-evolving conflicts brewing. Judging by the last page, there’s much more danger coming to Dylan and Aurie. Just another day at the office for the Massive-Verse team (which is a huge win for fans).

FREE PLANET #4 (IMAGE COMICS)

“Free” is such a funny word. It is that means different things to various people. For the residents of Lutheria, it has taken on a life of its own. The Freedom Guard is trying to hold it all together. It doesn’t help matters when Jackson Crater is added into the mix. After one rebellion, are they in line for another one?

FREE PLANET #4 by Aubrey Sitterson, Jed Dougherty, Vittorio Astone and Taylor Esposito continues its’ layered trek through a new planet’s infant stages.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the free world woes.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Sitterson takes the guard into a few new avenues this chapter. Keen Surroko continues to be the most compelling figure in the guard. The writing shows him torn on direction with an idea of where to go. This leads into a violent revolt taking place. Readers walk through the political aspect to the uprising. It raises many questions as to properly handling the situation. Much like any conflict, there are few easy answers.

One eventual conflict brewing is Crater vs. Surroko. The inner monologue leads to indicate more dealings in the works. Considering how much of a wildcard Crater is, expect fireworks. From here, the story slows down for a few sub plots. Basil and Katja get some page time along with Ha’Neel. Each maximize their page time. This could be an issue with such a large cast. Sitterson leaves the readers with plenty of information to get the full picture. None raise more eyebrows than Gloria and Talun. Seeing their dialogue play out teases something as the issue wraps. There’s no question of the levels this saga takes readers to.

Doughtery and Astone waste no time in bringing the revolution to the forefront. Back to back two page spreads show the brutal uprising. Having the Guard’s comments in the corners gives a real insight into their thoughts on the fight. The scenes are very detailed and hold nothing back. It paints the unsettling view of Freedom’s true cost.

Once Crater makes his way into view, the one changes. With Esposito’s lettering, his inner monologue takes new life. It has a manic presence to the wording. This mirrors his uneasiness towards Keen. Their half page face off is a perfect set-up for a longer confrontation. Readers watch as the art attempts to cover the vast ensemble. Key players get a fair amount of page time to build their cases. This all gives way towards the political closing pages. The art displays the trading information as Gloria balances personal drama. Events conclude with a haunting small panel. Another very strong display of Freedom’s complete view.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

What happens when being Free isn’t free enough? That is the question posed in this dramatic tale. Sitterson weaves in the heavy weight of governing with the writing. Doughtery, Astone and Esposito put events in motions with excellent art. This series isn’t afraid to go into uncharted territory. It’s what makes it stand out on the shelves each time out. Don’t miss it.

TRANSFORMERS #22 by Daniel Warren Johnson, Jorge Corona, Mike Spicer & Rus Wooton (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Take about an emotional build. Johnson spares no expense to get the audience fully wrapped around this chapter. The story is split between two very storng plots. In one corner is Megatron’s dark advancement of actions. His dialogue mirrors the intense suffering he is inflicting. It also brings back the complex, violate connection with Starscream. There is never a doubt of how the Decepticon leader thinks of the former head. It leave room for the scapegoat to be named should he lose this war.

The other and more powerful tale centers around Optimus Prime. No other element of this issue is more impactful than the human interactions. Johnson weaves in the the respect shown for rescuing them with Ultra Magnus’ rally cry. The result sets forth the last stand in style. Prime’s story is elevated within the Matrix. Readers watch as the past events come to a heartbreaking end. Seeing how the final page unfolds sets the table for an unforgettable finale. This is high level storytelling at its finest.

Corona and Spicer construct a very unstable battleground. The art locks in on Megatron’s dominant rage. It instantly creates an uneasiness with readers. Seeing the current state of Optimus Prime, the mood swings quickly to a somber tone. The panel of people paying respects strikes a deep chord. This aura carries into a close-up of humans saying “thank you” to the fallen Autobot.

The scene spills into a much needed event for Ultra Magnus. Watching his involvement thus far, the Autobot needed a spark. His body language in delivering his cry will excite readers. It is capped off with a close-up of little words. This becomes the match that lights an inferno of action. An incredible two page splash starts the final stand. Looming in the Matrix is a bittersweet rally of its’ own. The art locks in on Prime and a surprise guest coming to grips with their past. It leads into the closing pages where all bets are off. You can’t ask for a better building stage for a finale. This issue has it all!

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The pen-ultimate issue of DWJ’s run crashes into shops with a thunderous impact. Johnson’s powerful script checks all the needed boxes. Corona and Spicer swing huge and connect as the action explodes on the pages. “Tarnsformers” continuously raises new levels of excitement for readers. You can’t afford to miss this.

An old city and its’ stories. The streets of Gotham City can all tell a tale. One of its’ oldest neighborhoods has quite a tale. It is called the Rookery. When Batman investigates a dead body found in the area, it starts a dark path.

During the journey, Batman is shot. The culprits claim to represent an old evil. It leaves a haunting message: Is The Red Hood Gang back?

Let’s take a closer look at how this case wraps up.

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #9 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters gifts readers with a very strong closing chapter. Orchestrating the notion of their return, the family’s motives are clear. Batman sees through their play. It reveals a sad truth. The dialogue paints the depressing sense of grasping for more. Seeing how the Grandpa tries recreating the past indicates how far gone things are. Batman works this to his advantage. Stealing the false victory shows a turn in favor.

Readers watch as the facade starts breaking away. Watters implies a slow burn style for the shattering of reality. The Dark Knight makes a final surge with time running out. His words keep landing shots. Readers start seeing the emergence of the Caped Crusader they know in present times. The verbal warfare ends in a devastating finish. Watters gives a tragic spin to the conflict. It hits on a few levels. The event leaves an dismal impression on Batman’s work. This leads into a satisfying parting shot. Even in defeat, sometimes good can emerge.

Sherman and Farrell work their magic yet again for this issue. A simple full image of a bucket of Bleach welcomes readers in. Once the story starts moving, its’ true meaning comes to life. The near full image of the family towering over Bats makes a loud statement. Seeing Grandpa stand and speak his peace ushers in a great flashback montage. Panel set-up continues to impress with this series. It almost feels like puzzle pieces trying to mesh for a picture. This method works wonders as the case progresses along.

The picture of Batman’s “torture” reveals the dark thoughts going through the family’s head. This leads into a spectacular two page splash. Everything from the colors to the literal face-off will wow readers. It moves the events into a mortifying air. The visuals of a tragedy scream the shock and pain happening. It’s followed up by an equally impressive full page image. Once in its fallout, the art locks in on Batmans’ frustration and failure. Readers loop back in for the final page. It’s a bittersweet full page image leaving some notion of hope for the future.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

PAREIDOLIA” wraps up with a somber and stunning final bow. Watters navigates through the mental chess game with excellent writing. Sherman and Farrell continue to elevate each visual to amazing new heights with the art. There is no debate: This is THE best Batman series at the shops.

SUPERMAN: THE KRYPTONITE SPECTRUM #1 (DC COMICS)

Finding a new avenue to present Superman stories can be difficult. In over 80 years of stories, the Man of Steel has virtually done it all. With the emergence of “DC Black Label” a few years back, it has granted creators a new lane to tell more mature stories involving DC Superhero Characters.

Clark Kent has been no stranger to the brand. “The Last Days Of Lex Luthor” is a recent example of this partnership. Now, a creative team known for “Ice Cream Man” is about to embark on an ambitious new saga for Krypton’s Last Son.

SUPERMAN: THE KRYPTONITE SPECTRUM #1 by W. Maxwell Prince, Martin Morazzo, Chris O'Halloran, and Good Old Neon presents a new challenge involving Supes and his planet’s parting gift: Kryptonite!

Let’s see what the well-known horror team has in store for the iconic hero!

SUPERMAN: THE KRYPTONITE SPECTRUM #1 by W. Maxwell Prince, Martin Morazzo, Chris O'Halloran, and Good Old Neon (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Prince plays into the quirkiness of Superman lore with the set-up. With a mysterious asteroid heading to Earth, Supes investigates. In his findings are four new Kryptonites. This news doesn’t escape Lex Luthor. His dialogue oozes of the classic Gene Hackman portrayal. This element would be enough to balance out Clark’s wonder. Luckily for readers, another player enters the game.

Batman’s introduction is perfect. Prince leans into their old friendship. The result is more two friends helping each other than superhero Hijinx. Their banter is priceless. It shows readers how well they know each other, for better or worse. This all changes when Clark experiments with Purple Kryptonite.

The new element causes quite the commotion. Prince walks the line with the action and internal breakdown. It challenges the reader along with Clark of what’s true perception. There are many solid moments mixed in before heading to close. Once here, the dialogue brings events full circle before setting a huge new course. Readers should have no fear of where the direction takes them into next chapter. There’s much to enjoy here.

Morazzo and O’Hollaran tap into the classic aura of Superman for this story. The half panel breaking down his powers is a fun nod to the past. Seeing Luthor and Superman appear to be looking at the other on pages works to create more wonder of the discoveries. Both give way for Batman’s entrance. The art takes a simple crime fight and amplifies it to a personal call between friends.

Watching the back and forth between heroes keeps readers guessing. It is a sharp set-up as the new discovery is very unknown. The full page image of Superman self experimenting shows the lengths he goes to. It gives way to the fallout. Using purple panels to exemplify the changes, Superman’s breakdown jumps off page. Panel structure is key to this sequence.

Even with a full page shot thrown in, the disassembling takes hold. It plays well with the emotional images popping up. All seems calm to the final page. Readers get a full page parting shot for the ages as the door shuts here. The moment encompasses everything rolling in these pages. This is sure to be a fun ride moving forward.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

When a new twist to a classic substance, Superman’s world is turned inside out. Prince’s writing walks a fine line handling this new challenge. Morazzo and O’Hollaran deliver on crafting a vintage aura. This is going to be something Superman fans won’t forget anytime soon!

RADIANT BLACK #36 (IMAGE COMICS/MASSIVE-VERSE)

In the fallout of The Catalyst War, everything has changed. Nathan Burnett is no longer Radiant Black. Marshall Ward is the sole owner of the mantle. The world is not so welcoming to the hero. Public opinion is at an all time low. The power radiant might not be strong enough to overcome this.

In the war’s wake, one key Radiant has gone missing. Radiant Yellow has not been seen in quite some time. It appears the massive-verse faithful are about to get some answers to his disappearance.

RADIANT BLACK #36 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Clark, Stefano Simeone, and Becca Carey talks THE LONG LIFE OF RADIANT YELLOW!

Let’s look closer at the Massive-verse milestone!

RADIANT BLACK #36 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Clark, Stefano Simeone, and Becca Carey (Image Comics/Massive-Verse)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

It must be something about the Radiant Yellow. Over the course of the series, it feels as when featured, it brings out the strongest work. That is no exception here. Higgins and Clark welcome Nance into the Radiant mythos. What seems like a mismatched character with powers turns into something even more deeper than expected.

The story follows along the down and out lead as she discovers the yellow power. When using her powers, she comes across a dire premonition. The dialogue mirrors her rough surroundings. There is no punches pulled. Readers watch as this leads into a plan of misguided action. The writing brings out the highs and lows of Nance’s new hope. It takes readers on quite the weaving path. Nance’s dialogue is filled with anger and sadness. Even when things look hopeful, that light burns out. These events push towards a bittersweet ending. The writing challenges the readers with time and destiny. It leaves with a sense of a brighter tomorrow due to someone’s darkest days. Absolutely phenomenal storytelling for this chapter.

Simeone fills in for art duties on this special tale. The opening page is a full vision of Nance’s rough living. Her discovery leads to some fun but important interactions. Once the premonitions start, the chapter turns into the somber tones of events. A doctor’s visit amplifies the failing sense of Nance’s actions. The coloring of Yellow gives life to Nance’s new direction. Ultimately, it isn’t enough to shape her destiny.

Her sister’s visit throws more drama into an already complex situation. Simeone locks in on the reaction of Nance as the visit’s truth arises. This leads to an impressive two page splash. Readers watch as this unlocks more hidden truths. Nance’s emotions cover much ground leading into the close. Once in this stage, the art sets up readers for what lies ahead. Simeone reflects the truth of matters with close-up of the eyes. It tells a more vivid picture to the readers. This brings forth a superb final page. It ties up loose ends while leaving just enough for readers to ponder. Excellent work in handling this very shifting tale.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

The complex legacy of Radiant Yellow stands apart from the Catalyst fallout in a must read chapter. Higgins and Clark construct an impactful tale of loss and hope. Simeone’s stunning visuals take this chapter to new heights. The Massive-verse continues to challenge the way readers look at superheroes. This issue is no exception.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #10 (DC COMICS)

The spotlight grows hotter for Kal El. With both The Lazarus Corporation and Omega Men having interest in his services, Superman struggles for peace. Even a return trip to Smallville becomes a war zone. One person refuses to accept defeat. He is the head of Lazarus. His name is Ra’s Al Ghul.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #10 by Jason Aaron, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ulises Arreola and Tom Napolitano puts the Man of Steel in the direct path of the Demon’s Head.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest chapter.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Aaron splits this issue into two varying places. The first focuses in on the past of Krypton. Jor-El’s struggle to survive reflects on his devotion to family. Watching the Magmoles attempt to stop his advances leads into a mimic of present day plans. This time, the focus is on another patriarch.

The writing shows the terrifying commitment to Al Ghul’s plans. He is not willing to compromise. This makes him an even more dangerous threat than before. Using a backdrop of “reuniting family” raised many questions. Aaron provides some while moving events along.

The pairing of Brainiac and Al Ghul provides a combustible dynamic. Readers watch as every line delivered could explode at any point. This breaks for Superman’s entrance into the fight. Readers watch his noble sense play into resolving issues. Kal-El’s teachings add strength to the Man of Tomorrow. They prove to be a hindrance when the final conflict arises. Readers watch as Aaron weaves in a major surprise to bring down Superman. It leaves with a chilling final page that can only lead to nothing good. Welcome to the Absolute Universe indeed.

Di Giandomenico and Arreola present the Kryptonian chaos with flare. Jor-El’s eyes tell the fear encompassing the panels. It carries a growing sense of doubt as they fight the creatures. A full page shot throws an exclamation point on the battle there. It also serves as a great segway point to transition back to Earth.

The banter with Al Ghul and Brainaic never stops feeling uneasy with the visuals. Both character expressions show how fast things can go sideways. Adding Peacemaker into the fold throws more gas on the fire. It ultimately burns out when Superman arrives. The near full page shot gives an iconic sense to his presence. The moment allows for a return flashback which conveys Superman’s grace. This moves events into a free-for-all with all parties clashing. The Omega Men vs. Lazarus Corp with Superman held back. Readers watch as a shocking move leads to an even greater reveal. The final page ushers in a new phase foe Kal-El, one he may not survive.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Ra’s Al Ghul unveils his master plans as Superman must find a way to survive. Aaron pens a deeply woven tale of Family and focus. Di Giandomenico and the art team balance a frantic sequence of action while displaying the power of family. Major moves are happening here and shouldn’t be missed.

SECRET SIX #6 (DC COMICS)

The line between hero and villain is a tight rope to walk. When Amanda Waller disappears from Belle Reve Prison, the world was put on notice. Six people took extreme interest due to past events. Dreamer, Gossamer, Superman Jon Kent, Deadshot, Black Alice, & Catman all have axes to grind against Waller.

Their search has put them in the path of Checkmate. The covert organization has their own plans for Waller. Some members appear to be going into business for themselves. Something has to give.

SECRET SIX #6 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands concludes its re-introduction to the DC Universe.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the intense finale!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Maines delivers on overdue emotional releases for a few members. Jon Kent has been pushed in directions he is very uncomfortable in. Even with the wholesome opening, the reality of Jay’s actions weigh heavy. This is paired with the current mess he’s tagged in. The banter with Catman is a real view of their world. This winds up breaking the young Kent’s patience. It clearly strikes a few nerves before switching attention over to Waller’s fate.

Once here, Jay Nakamura takes center stage. The dialogue brings out Jay’s unrelenting drive for revenge. This causes a huge problem with Dreamer. Their long awaited brawl finally begins. Readers watch as this spirals into a fight amongst everyone. It is quite the chaotic scenario. Maines brings out the heartbreak with Jon Kent. Knowing how high the ramifications are, one member makes a drastic move. This leads into a somber and painful divide. Readers can only watch as the strongest member is left with a large wound. The final page drives this factor home while leaving a sense of pause before bowing out. Suffice to say, there’s more unfolding here than where the issue ends.

Segovia returns for art duties for the finale. The opening page shows the evolution of Mr. Kent. It crosses many times before landing in the present. The conversation with Catman pours with tension. There’s never a moment where things simmer down. The same can be said for the Dreamer vs. Jay lead-in. After a solid start, a near full image swings big as the fight is on. It doesn’t take long for everything to fall apart on the mission at hand.

Superman hovering over Catman indicates the brooding anger boiling in Kent. This begins their throwdown. A two page splash brings Black Alice into the foray. The action ramps up a few notches with the following pages. It pauses for a full image of Jon Kent ready to end everything. Readers follow along as the slow breaking of a soul when the realizations hit. One member has gone too far. This leaves a few striking images has the fallout sets in. The closing panel leaves a glimpse of an uncertain future with many words left unsaid.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

Tensions finally boil over as the Six come to the end of their road. Maines’ writing weaves in the painful cost of their actions. Segovia and Beredo balance the action with the rage as one member makes a deadly choice. Once the dust settles, fans won’t want to miss where the unstable unit moves to next.

JSA #10 (DC COMICS)

Is it the end of the road for the JSA? The Injustice Society has been destorying the heroes at every level. Wildcat was killed. Hawkman is MIA. The team just discovered an imposter in their ranks. Johnny Sorrow replaced Obsidian and caused nothing but dissention.

Taking advantage of the misfortune, the villains have acquired the location of the Spear of Destiny. With the powerful item in their possession, victory is almost certain.

JSA #10 by Jeff Lemire, Rafael de Latorre, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) showcases the race against time to stop the bad guys from getting the spear!

Let’s take a closer look at what transpires now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This chapter hits on some key points involving the large cast. After a brief Kid Eternity moment, Lemire opens up with catching up with Hawkman. The banter with Hawkgirl and him plays into the mounting frustration evolving. It provides a few calm panels before heading back into action. Pacing spaces their time out just enough not to get lost in the mix. This helps when the larger tale takes hold.

The Injustice Society’s moves are split into two key points. Johnny Sorrow’s standoff with the JSA sets the foundation for one last rally. It lightly touches upon some other drama brewing on the team. This all is over-shadowed when Wotan and company hit Blackhawk Island. Seeing Red Lantern lash out gives a notion of doubt onto her allegiance to Wotan.

From here, the juggling of cast causes a quick pace. Readers have all key plots hit before concluding the chapter. The balancing act works as some timelines are starting to merge into one overall place. Nothing more evident of this than the closing page. It leaves readers with a true grasp of the stakes and how the JSA is fading away fast.

De Latorre is back on art duties for this issue. Opening with Hawkman, the art locks in on his confusion. It mirrors the struggle the rest of the team is facing. Readers watch as it leads into a strong full page set-up for their fight. Once the fight transitions back to the JSA line-up, the chapter starts speeding events up.

A two page splash shows how Sorrow’s reveal is handled. It eases the readers into Wotan’s search for the spear. The art hones in on Red Lantern’s expressions. There is an overwhelming sense of pause involving her. This quickly moves into lashing out on Lady Eve. Readers see how this plays into the JSA’s rally. Kid Eternity’s half page history gives some insight on the role she will play. This spins into a few key action pages before the final page shuts everything down. The full image of the Injustice Society sends a dark message. It’s a great cliffhanger for more to come.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.3

The Injustice Society has victory in their grasp as the JSA struggles to fight back. Lemire builds up the drama to a great ending. De Latorre and the art team shine with the classic superhero themes. It’s everything you want from such a legendary team with a timeless history.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #43 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Erica Slaughter is a complex individual. Growing up in the Order of St. George is anything but normal. The same can be said for one of her mentors, Jessica. On a case, the two struggle to find common ground. This doesn’t help with a rising body count.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #43 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) continues on a look at Erica’s early days.

Let’s take a closer look at what unfolds now.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #43 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tynion plays up to his strengths for this chapter. Using his “slow burn” methods, the uneasiness between Erica and Jessica is brewing. Jessica’s simple flirting with a bartender pushes Erica to move on her own. This results in a confrontation with the monster’s victim. The dialogue shows Erica’s frantic search for answers. Being her early days, she is much more hopeful and warm to conversation. This is a very big contrast of who she becomes.

The story shifts to the town’s discovery of another attack. Jessica’s coldness to Erica is very clear. Readers can easily pick up on the tension. The writing does tip off some possible clues about Jessica’s reasoning. It doesn’t wait to shift attention. Once on Erica, pacing speeds up a few events. Tynion provides a few different looks to the pair heading to close. The more intriguing story is now Jessica. Her actions in the final page elude to more mistrust. How this pair looks to function as a unit is anyone’s guess at this stage. I have no doubt Tynion is cooking something up for a monster finish for this tale.

Dell’edera and Muerto construct a deep look into the fractures in Jessica and Erica. The simple flirting plays off Erica’s budding doubt. This provides some awkward interactions. The conversation with Aaron feels very wholesome (as far as monster hunting goes). This quickly disappears when Erica sees a victim. The mannerisms on display raise the horror level as Erica strives to get help for the girl.

This moves events to a flashback sequence for Jessica. Muerto’s coloring gives a perfect dream state to his moment. It doesn’t hide the terror. Even as readers get a steady look at the fallen friend, Jessica’s sadness never breaks. This plays into more friction in the present. The art locks in on the clashing of hunters. Both get solid time to build their tales. Jessica’s proves to be the stronger of the two. The closing pages indicate her self-doubts as the case seems to be slipping further away. This is classic SIKTC. Another stellar job with constructing the case.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

THE AVENGERS IN THE VERACITY TRAP (MARVEL ARTS)

In 2022, a new joint venture from Abrams Comic Arts and Marvel Comics made a fantastic debut. Under the imprint name “Marvel Arts”, they ushered in a new era of Marvel Graphic Novels. Having the legendary Alex Ross involved made a huge statement. This lead to his non-painted story “Fantastic Four: Full Circle”.

The project was a smash success. Seeing how Ross paid homage to the classic Stan Lee/Jack Kirby era was a delight to behold.

Three years later and the imprint has another offering for fans. This time, the spotlight belongs to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It also isn’t your average story.

“THE AVENGERS IN THE VERACITY TRAP” by Chip Kidd & Michael Cho takes the classic superhero team into a whole new world outside their comprehension.

Let’s take a closer look at what is happening here.

“THE AVENGERS IN THE VERACITY TRAP” by Chip Kidd & Michael Cho (Marvel Arts - (Abrams ComicArts/MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This is Kidd’s first time writing for Marvel, but he’s no stranger to tackling huge characters. Kidd helmed writing duties on Batman: Death by Design. With the god of mischief running wild, the Avengers arrive to stop his moves. Readers see the classic lineup of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Giant-Man, and the Wasp take over. The dialogue is very fitting for the 1960’s era they are in. It feels like a throwback when stories were simpler. Fortunately for the readers, that isn’t the case here.

After defeating Loki and his horde of monsters, Thor is thrusted into a portal. When he returns, everyone is stunned with his revelations. This pushes the story into a very creative narrative. Readers watch as the lines are blurred between Truth and Fiction. Kidd injects some fun awkwardness into the every-evolving tale. It never lets go of the vintage superhero feel. The interactions between characters are priceless.

Even when the final act begins, the story never loses its charm. Kidd leaves readers with a greater sense of what makes these characters legendary. They serve as a reminder of where imagination can take simple dreams. Events conclude in the only fashion they can. There won’t be too many readers walking away from this one without a smile on their face.

Cho brings the Kriby mystique to life with this saga. Loki with his army of monsters gets a full page image to start things off. Following a gorgeous team image, Cho delves into a timeless look. The “Marvel Masterwork Pin Up” is a solid win. Highlighting the squad via full page shots gives a more grand feel. There are plenty of bold action pages to compliment this sequence. Cho even features in the trademark “Kirby Crackle” into the mix. Once the story crosses worlds, it takes on a new look.

Readers see how the other side deals with the crossing over of events. There is a fun half page shot of the Avengers visiting the new world. This leads into a fun two page splash where the unlikely pair heads into the Avengers time. Seeing the reactions when a monster is coming takes on new life.

Cho locks in on the quirkiness of the situation, giving readers a light-heartened laugh while moving forward. This spins events into the final act. Watching a thought translate into an amazing two page splash become a game-changer. It leaves the characters reactions etched into the fabric of the story’s meaning. Another full page image lands soundly to lead into the fun final page. There is much to rave about the art in this novel.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

“Veracity Trap” Takes one party Kirby era storytelling and mix it with some fourth wall hijinks. The result is a truly entertaining glimpse into a forgotten era. Kidd’s writing navigates a much deeper message through the conflict at hand. Cho mesmerizes readers with each beautiful page of art. This one packs quite the punch that readers won’t want to miss.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT: BLOOD MOON RISING #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Jack Russell has made quite the impression over 50 years. His escapades have put him in the paths of the Hulk, Moon Knight and countless MCU favorites. Whether friend or foe, when the moon rises so does the terror.

The character’s popularity has grown further after a Marvel Studios Special Presentation. As more fans check out this character, a new special shows there’s more to offer than a good howl.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT: BLOOD MOON RISING #1 by Michael Giacchino, David Messina, Mattia Iacono, Jason Loo & Joe Sabino presents two new tales by writers well-versed in the Jack Russell tales.

Let’s take a closer look at what is happening now!

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT: BLOOD MOON RISING #1 by Michael Giacchino, David Messina, Mattia Iacono, Jason Loo & Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The special is broken into two tales. “Nail In The Coffin” by Giacchino, Messina, Iacono and Sabino puts Russell in a curious spot. Waking up in a controlled cell, the mood indicates something more sinister awaits. Readers don’t wait long as DRACULA is proven to be the culprit.

The writing takes Russell into new spaces. Seeing how his alter ego is altered throws a welcomed new look to this conflict. The result adds in a surprise guest with a greater impact than expected. Watching the communication between Russell and said character proves to spark an escape. It leads to a very intriguing close. The last page keeps a door wide open for something far greater down the road.

Messina and Iacono begin with a confused Russell in his cell. The art hones in on the confusion. Dracula’s entrance is given a solid half page. Watching the two personalities clash mirrors the dialogue superbly. This meeting isn’t very cut and dry. There is a fair amount of action panels to enjoy before a new player joins. Another half page welcomes the powerful figure into the tale. They push the events into a more puzzling close. A full page panel ends events for now but certainly not for long.

As a HUGE “All-Nighter” fan, seeing Loo pull double duty is an instant win. “A Howling Nightmare” is exactly that! Throwing in Nightmare as the main villain is another clash of styles. Russell (along with his sister Lissa and Jake Gomez) seem out of element. The writing pushes them into their darkest fears. Loo locks this point in with his art. Readers watch as the terror feels real with Lissa and Jake losing their battles.

This gives way to Jack taking over. Being the seasoned “hero” of the three, his monlogue ushers in the final stand off. Watching each wolf member deal with their terror throws off the mystical being’s smile. Events tie up nicely on the closing page. The reactions of Russell and Nightmare can’t be ignored. They move to a “happy” ending, well as far as werewolves get.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

The life and times of Jack Russell are anything but boring. Giacchino & Loo construct two distinct stories that bring out the best of the cursed beast. The art holds nothing back as threats are dealt with the only way he knows. Looking for why the Wolf-Man has lasted over 50 years? Look no further than here!

The Last Witch: Blood & Betrayal #2 by Conor McCreery, V. V. Glass, Natalia Nesterenko & Taylor Esposito (Ghost Glyph Studios) - BOOM! Studios

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

McCreery doesn’t delay in venting out Saoirse’s impulsiveness to Brahm’s situation. The writing expresses her anger perfectly. This causes a bit of concern from her group. If she’s not fully focused, all could be lost. This leads into the initial conflict. Readers watch as the upper hand is gained. This leads into a heartbreaking scenario of events.

Her frustration is thwarted by more deception. McCreery never lets this aura escape the issue. Even when Nan and Hugh make their last stand, the emotional heartache shines. This leads into a fierce closing to the conflict. Readers see the after effects pour out of the young witch. It leaves the issue with plenty of thoughts along with a calm aura. There’s no doubt this story hasn’t even scratched the surface of what’s coming. What a huge win for readers.

Glass and Nesterenko open with the search underground. The usage of light and darks is fantastic. It allows for the dark mood to start peeling back. There is a solid vision of the maze revealed. It gives a needed pause before the first attack is made. This is met with some steady action shots as events move to a more personal area.

Brahm’s memories are filled with bright spots until the last panel. Once Saoirse arrives at this point, the same emotional pull can be felt. The deception plays its’ part to set up the final stand. Seeing how manipulative this plays will strike a few chords. It results in a haunting series of events to close. Knowing what Saoirse was put through, her anger expands in these panels. It leads to a more controlled finale. Her anger lingers in the parting shots. A full page image takes one player off the board. This rolls into a stark reflection of what she is becoming. It leaves readers seeing more is on the horizon with an ever struggling soul.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

When it’s all about family, they should steer clear of Saoirse’s. McCreery orchestrates a superb rescue mission with the writing. Glass and the art team hone in on the heavy emotions wore in the conflict. This series checks off everything you want from a great comic.

Readers see how the dark forces are decimating the time travelers. It creates more intrigue when one escapes. The art establishes how vital the mission is. It also takes a small break to show the characters in quieter moments. One character shining in this time is Air Wave.

Knowing his part in “Yesterday”, the art locks in on his self doubt. “Legend”’s time moves events into forming a team. A full page image shows who’s been put together. “Rag Tag” is the perfect way to describe the group. Even a stowaway makes a fun debut. This leads into their rescue mission. The art delivers on high action. This leads into a very solid closing. One hero really finds himself courage in this melee. Readers see a team thrown a roadblock. Air Wave’s expressions says it all. THE ADVENTURES OF ULYSSES MONARCH #4 by Marc Guggenheim, Harvey Tolibao, Mark Englert & Diego Sanches (Comixology Originals)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Guggenhiem throws everything into high gear with the opening pages. Seeing Monarch be impaled by the headhunter is a bold move. It amplifies the high stakes of his mission. The writing walks the tightrope with the tense atmosphere. Being reunited with Casey adds a grounded feel to the moments. Her unwavering support during injury shows their bond. Once the Miranda/Casey adventure transitions, the pacing starts picking up more speed. Readers watch as the deep sea adventure turns into something more. The dialogue breaks more down of the ever-changing landscape. There’s not too much of a wait on the action. As the headhunter crashes the party, Casey takes the spotlight. A new discovery spins another thread into the foray. The conclusion drops another but not shocking surprise before wrapping up. It makes sense for this move as the next steps are crucial. Tolibao and Englert bring out the big guns early for this chapter. The escape from the Headhunter is filled with fast-paced panels. Readers can truly sense the dangers at hand. It’s in very large contrast to its’ fallout. The art locks in on Casey’s worry with Monarch hanging on by a thread. Even in the future, the emotional pull remains key. The stakes are high! Cosmic entities known as the Web-Heart & Hive-Mind have pitted champions against each other. Spiders and Symbiotes battle for survival. With all these personalities involved, it was only a matter of time before something went wrong.

Last readers watched, Spider-Ham took Weapon VIII off the board. Who's next to fall in the dangerous game?

SPIDER-VERSE vs. VENOMVERSE #3 by Mat Groom and Kyle Higgins, Jim Towe Rachelle Rosenberg and Travis Lanham (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Higgins and Groom come out the gate swinging with Team Spidey's rescue attempt of Miles. The one-liners come fast as Spidey is navigating through the combat. His banter offsets the uneasy tension building. Readers watch as the good times quickly disappear to the nature of the game.

Recluse and Miles (Spider-Prowler) both carry big scars on their sleeves. The writing showcases a more aggressive edge in their bouts. It does contrast the morals of Spider-Man himself. Luckily, he gets a more calm team member added. Having Takuya Yamashiro join the squad is a perfect addition. Readers see there's at least someone he can trust. Most of the other members have other plans in motion. This all gives way to a strong ending. The close builds up a hell of a main event for readers to pull up for next go around.

Towe and Rosenberg drop in a nice two page splash of the Miles rescue to set pace. Panels move fast as the action heats up. The symbiotes give a few different looks to team Spidey's attack. One of which tries playing off emotions. Readers can sense the trouble brooding behind the scenes. it's only a matter of time before it implodes.

The Team Spider swinging panel is eye catching. Seeing all the different spiders on page is a nice treat for readers. This quickly takes a back seat to Takuya Yamashiro's debut. The mid page shot is subtle but slips in enough story. It is a huge difference in comparison to Spidey interrogating another member. All events push towards the closing pages form here. The art delivers on setting the stage for something larger at hand. Considering what we find on the final page, readers will have to prepare for the wild action forthcoming.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

The latest installment shows desperate times call forth extreme measures. Groom and Higgins present the mounting tension with an excellent script. Towe and Rosenberg construct a high pace conflict with many moving parts. This series has been a blast to read and shows no signs of slowing down now.

How does the League respond with no answers in sight?

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #9 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Dave Sharpe pick up the pieces in thier latest chapter.

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #9 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid breaks this issue down into two separate stories. The first being the issue with the time-displaced heroes. Seeing the conversations provide a light break from the looming danger ahead. The dialogue quicky turns when Time Trapper and Alpheus arrive. Their assessment of the “time quakes” elevates the pressure. It leads into a drastic proposition. Waid spins this into an exciting action sequence. It ultimately resolves in a very unlikely manner. Desperate times call for extreme measures.

The other arc dives into Mr. Terrific’s attempts to save Air Wave. Waid’s writing shows an unusual side of Terrific which is rarely seen. Ironically, Blue Beetle calls it out during their time. Readers watch as the newly defined focus pushes towards a positive attempt. The outcome gives readers a semblance of hope. It is much different than the closing pages. With all the moving parts, the groundwork is being laid for another monstrous event. It still provides an enjoyable experience with DC’s finest heroes.

Mora and Bonvillain open up with the original Harley Quinn swinging her mallet via full page. This launches in to a mix of past, present and future versions of the heroes. The nostalgia gives way to the pair of time controllers crashing the party. Their near full page entrance adds extra gravity into the tense situation brewing. Seeing their breakdown of events puts the dangerous call into question. The art shifts into high gear as the fighting escalates. Readers will be impressed with the action going down. It ends on a more calm note but not without impact.

The same can be said for the Terrific saga. Seeing the calm genius shaken up makes quite the statement. Mora hones in on the frustration extremely well. Panels key in on this factor until Beetle’s deciphering. Once here, the art shows the desperate attempt to salvage their fallen friend. Sharpe’s lettering drills home the risky moves. It serves as a strong complement to the frantic art. Panel set-ups also tell the story. It guides readers to its fantastic conclusion. The final page reveals more trouble on the horizon. Would readers have it any other way? With art like this, no one will complain.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

Any moment a timeline is tampered with, it’s not an easy reset. Waid steers the ship into its’ new path with strong writing. Mora and Bonvillain’s magnificent art balances the ever-challenging landscape. There’s no time to look back, just forward where this series is heading.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #5 (DC COMICS)

There’s no light at the end of the line. Middleton power stations are down. The city is under a blackout. Temperatures aren’t the only thing rising. The White Martian has unleashed the violence out of the citizens. As the city slips into the night, Middleton’s uncanny duo steps up to the plate.

It’s two against a broken city. Something has to give.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #5 by Deniz Camp, Javier Rodríguez and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou enters the darkness in its’ latest chapter.

Let’s take a closer look at how this all plays out.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #5 by Deniz Camp, Javier Rodríguez and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Camp shows no hesitation in taking readers into a modern horror classic. The tone is set early with a dog’s tragic murder. It matches the foreshadowing of other heinous events. Jones’ reaction is cold but necessary. Both he and the Martian know the truth of the matter. The narration paints the dark landscape perfectly. It leaves readers with a dire view of Middleton with no end in sight.

The looming uneasiness never leaves this chapter. Camp takes readers further into the madness with multiple scenarios. None may strike a larger chord than seeing Jones’ son with some dangerous candy. The play on the hidden danger only elevates Jones’ fight. Just when things seem stable, a massive curve is thrown. The event twists the overall picture right before the close. In its’ final moments, the story adds in key conflicts. All of which boil to a head with the final page. It leads readers with a clear picture of the true form of the Absolute Universe.

Rodríguez’ use of light and shadows is the huge takeaway from this book. The opening murder is presented in a very unique manner. Having the shadows tell their own story only adds more intrigue to a highly rich tale. With each passing view of Middleton, this amplifies. There are few breaks in this tempo. One of which is the focus on his estranged family.

The simple panels paint the fractures of the Jones. Readers easily see the wear on Bridget Jones. It doesn’t slow pace down for long. The use of orange coloring brings the next conflict into view. Rodríguez balances the coloring for an intense view of Jones observing the chaos. It transitions to the close with an extreme action. The maneuvering of the panels easily juggle the multiple plots. It all gets overshadowed by a full page image that is simply jaw dropping. The fantastic closing page manages the fallout as events sink further away. Another masterpiece of storytelling.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

Darkness has fallen over Middleton and there is no hope in sight. Camp’s superb writing challenges the breaking point of Jones and the Martian. Rodríguez & Otsmane-Elhaou continues to raise the bar even higher with the phenomenal art. This continues to be a must read series with the next level creativity behind it.

VOID RIVALS #21 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

Unity. The Agorrians and Zertonians have struggled to comprehend this for years. It hasn’t stopped Darak and Solila from trying. The unlikely pair have uncovered some shocking truths. With this information, they attempt to win over support. It appears not everyone is on board with their long-spanning goals.

VOID RIVALS #21 by Robert Kirkman, Conor Hughes, Patricio Delpeche and Rus Wooton delves into the Energon Universe’s latest space conflict.

Let’s take a closer look at what is going down now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kirkman does his best to juggle a vast amount of character time with this chapter. The Skuxxoid open gives enough time to progress his sub plot. It’s unclear yet where this is ultimately going. The meeting with Skuxxoid Alpha teases more but serves as a solid break from the larger players at work. None play a larger role here than Proximus.

Readers watch as he creates a dangerous presence in handling a challenge. The writing shows no give as the imposing figure acts. It serves as an indication of the dire times ahead. Once the spotlight moves back to the leading pair, the story finds its groove. The dialogue indicates their dream is much alive. It serves as a fleeting point as the action comes to their front door. An injection of excitement carries the chapter to its’ close. The moment may have taken a bit to get to, but an overdue showdown is finally on course.

Hughes and Delpeche make the most out of the Skuxxoid time. It comes with a more safe direction as its’ drama slowly unfolds. The panels give breaks where needed. Filling in time allows for the lead character to take center stage. Proximus maximizes each page he appears on. The half page panels showing his dominating stature accelerates his conflicts. It gives more gravity to an already heavy situation.

His methods of “diplomacy” is given the full page treatment. This defiant mood shifts over to the more calm stages with Darak and Solila. The pair jump into action via half page panel. It doesn’t take long for events to go into high gear. Another near full page welcomes the assault at their front door. This spirals into great action panels. None make a louder statement than the final page. The art team drops in another near full shot as business is about to pick up next chapter.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

Proximus makes his intentions known as the Energon Universe braces for impact. Kirkman’s writing balances a large ensemble with their moving parts. Hughes and the art team hone in on the conflict build with their imagery. Events are in motion that are poised to get fans talking at the LCS.
