SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #6 by Dan Slott, Rafael Albuquerque, Mike Norton, Marcelo Maiolo and Dave Sharpe continues its’ enture into the Kryptonite Kingdom.

Let’s take a closer look at where things shape up now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Slott puts the Man of Steel into a unique position. Superman is hailed as a hero to the people of El Caldero. Once the story starts revving up, events start peeling back the dark layers of the bright kingdom. The main driver of this issue is Castilho and Lois Lane. Their face-off unveils the presidents’ mad dash for power. The dialogue shows his obsession to have it all and how ruthless he can be.

This moves the story into a more frantic pace. Readers see Superman’s latest power in action. It helps cement the drama. The moment runs directly into Lane’s escape. Both paths cross with solid results. It leads to a shakeup in Castilho’s plans. The final act provides a few classic Superman moments. The writing plays into the political spin unfolding here. It is an aspect that can’t be ignored. This amplifies in the final moments. The seduction of power is too strong. It will be responded to via the final page. A familiar face returns and not a moment top soon to help fight back. It’s a much needed injection to what’s happening here.

The art opens with a full page shot of Superman in peril. It counters the children of El Caldero celebrating their hero. The panels move fast as both Superman and Lois have their own issues to deal with. Castilho’s corruption shines on his face. He has committed to maintain his kingdom. There is many different sides he shows throughout this issue.

The full page image of “Superman Gold” is a crowd pleaser. There is a fair share of action panels to appease fans. Even with the art duties switching mid issue, it never slows down the pace. This builds to a more dramatic action taking place. Superman saving a young child is as classic as it gets. The aftermath sets up a few more plotlines. This all builds towards a mid panel return on the final page. It opens a new direction while keeping Castilho’s plans in the forefront.

NIGHTWING #131 by Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini & Wes Abbott (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters takes readers along for the growing pains of Nightwing Prime right from the start. The writing leans into his eagerness as they watch Killer Moth come into town. There are some comical moments mixed in the drama. “Mothmarine” will be a crowd pleaser. Even as Grayson plays coach, his dialogue is very reminiscent to his mentor. This comes into play when caught off guard. It caps off time before heading the issue in a new direction.

Readers watch as a more serious case is forming. The dialogue between Maggie Sawyer and Grayson hits the landing. The reveal of the Zanni is a shock to Grayson. Knowing his impatient sidekick is loose, the attention swings back to Prime. This leads to a solid closing act. Even as unstoppable as Prime has been, one moment shifts everything away. The writing builds up this scene perfectly. It allows for the story to move into another direction with a great cliffhanger. Not sure where this may lead but definitely locked in for it.

Soy and Gandini give the Zanni a dramatic intro with the opening page. A mid panel foreshadows the dangers coming. The half page intro for Prime shifts moods very fast. Readers clearly see his naive nature as the Moth plan starts. The action speeds up with great panels of the sea chase. It leads to a more dramatic close with images of Nightwing fighting under water. This moves events into a more familiar realm of Grayson’s career.

Grayson’s meeting with Sawyer is classic in presentation. Panels reflect the breakdown of the latest case. The image of the Zanni is noteworthy. Seeing the face appear on sketch pops off the page. Grayson’s reaction was a solid compliment. This moved events to Prime’s impulse actions. A wild near full page displays Prime’s reckless powers. This is followed up by a dramatic full page image. It changes the mood heading into the final page. A disturbing parting shot concludes a very steady issue.

ROGUE SUN #30 by Ryan Parrott, Nick Cotton, Abel, Bruno Frenda, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey (Image Comics/ Massive-verse)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Sir John of York makes a bold splash into the story with his opening sequence. The writing narrates just enough for new readers to get an understanding of the character. The intro is short and to the point. It doesn’t take long for Caleb Hawthorne to crash this party. Their interaction goes as well as one would expect. Readers watch as the two tussle before a cooler head prevails. Once here, the issue starts taking shape.

The Withered gets a proper introduction. Parrott and Cotton blend in Rogue Sun lore into the mix. It cements their pairing into a dangerous mission. This results in big action and a devastating loss. G.I. JOE #12 by Joshua Williamson, Marco Foderà, Lee Loughridge and Rus Wooten (Image Comics/Skybound)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson teases the disconnect with Duke and Hawk early in the book. Being in the covert world of espionage, the writing shows what long game Hawk is setting up. The mission in Darklonia is vintage GI Joe. Readers watch as the narration by Beach Head sells Shooter’s importance. It helps new readers to understand her importance to what is being built with Night Force.

The scenes become brutal as Shooter is being tortured. Sprinkling in flashbacks only cements her will to win. Williamson does a fantastic job of hiding the spy tactics in these scenes. It carries over into the turning point of the story. Once here, pacing goes into overdrive. Readers see what Shooter does best. The scenes cement her skills while providing a transition to close. The pages wrap up the prior storyline while laying the foundation for the major event forthcoming. A solid issue before everything goes wild with the “Dreadnok War”.

Foderà steps in for art duties in this stand-alone. The opening back brings out the chess match between Duke and Hawk. It is subtle but their eyes give away how they’re breaking down the other’s truth. A two page splash brings Night Force to Darklonia. This brings Shooter into the spotlight. A Nine grid page shows her skills in action. This takes readers into an uncomfortable situation.

The interrogation scene is mixed with brutal punches and flashbacks. Loughridge’s coloring lets these panels pop. It offsets the darker tones used in the prison sequences. The close-ups of Shooter’s beaten demeanor tips off the punishment of the mission. This leads to a transition point.

At this stage, the bullets start flying (literally). Readers are treated to a thrilling escape. The closing panels turn to Shooter’s final shots. Panel structure is excellently staged to walk through her techniques. Her new teammates reactions are priceless before going to the closing pages. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Leave it to Phillips to interweave a horror story through compelling family dynamics. It’s why she is one of the best to ever write comics. The beginning teases the ill fated original voyage. There is no doubt of the dark themes at play here. Once the story jumps to the present, the deceitful nature manifests itself in other forms.

This begins with Captain Alexander Vellotti. The writing shows him as a shrewd businessman. Even with n impending storm, Vellotti is more concerned with his income over safety. Once the spotlight shifts to the passengers, the emotional investments start taking hold. Readers get introduced to the voyagers through Victoria Wright’s eyes. Using this style of narration walks the personal relations of family into their encounter. Victoria and her brother Royce instantly become stand-out characters due to this method.

It pushes events into an unlikely and terrifying close. Once the moment sinks in, everything is thrown in flux. It leaves readers haunted by the true terror at hand. Impressive first chapter.

Laming and Loughridge paint the disturbing horror to new levels in this chapter. The brooding evil in the beginning pages sets the pace for the following pages. Mixing in the more lighter moments in the present only adds to the larger hits later. Vellotti’s moody looks tip the cap of the shadiness of his character. The full page photos of the passengers clue readers into the heartbreaks forthcoming.

The imagery of the past pulls no punches. Seeing the wrapped dead bodies under water makes a statement. It is quite the opposite of the joyous launch. ACTION COMICS #1091 by Mark Waid, Skylar Patridge, Ivan Plascencia & Steve Wands continues its look at the early days of Superboy.

Let’s take a closer look at how things play out.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid keeps the classic themes rolling in this chapter. The standoff with the army sets a steady pace to move things along. Watching the Kents react to Comet’s betrayal provides enough drama to offset the high school Hijinx. These moments construct his early days, but don’t add to the overall picture here. That belongs to Captain Comet.

FREE PLANET #6 by Aubrey Sitterson, Jed Dougherty, Vittorio Astone and Taylor Esposito (IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Sitterson brings the guard’ inner turmoil to center stage early in this chapter. Trying to decide the best attack for the oncoming fleet shows the political drama. With the many different personalities “in charge”, the writing shows their issues. This shines in dealing with Basil and Katja. Their disconnect spikes to a new level when things are falling apart.

Doughtery & Astone open with a tense scene. As the fleet is en route, actions are questioned. The two page splash breaks down the gravity of the moment. Reactions are very mixed as plans are put into place. Panels mirror the tough calls involved. Basil’s full page look piles more drama into events. It’s the calm before a kiss becomes the storm.

Fweha’s PDA with Keen is given a full page with reactions. What follows next turns everything into a new direction (literally). The sideways style of images unloads on the brutal call of action. Readers watch as the Guard imposes their will onto their attackers. Its’ fallout returns with more drama imploding. More physical interaction of Keen and Fweha moves into two pages. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

How dangerous can one man be? that is the question Johnson poses to the readers. The initial stages brings Batman and Robin to Penguin’s door. Their conversation is very familiar in tone. Neither are playing their hands concerning the killer. This game of Cat and Mouse leads to a stand still. Much as anything with the Penguin, take his words at face value.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor crafts a straight-forward take of bravery in danger’s face. Fel and Connor continue to be the standout characters as events move forward. Fel’s interactions with “Arthur” convey the wonder of what is happening. Connor’s time with “Lancelot” is much in that same vein. It helps to start connecting these parties as the threats start appearing.

Readers watch as a simple Bingo night turns into much more. The writing teases how Connor’s grandmother knows way more than she plays. This gives the issue a boost of action as her reveal starts a new direction. It moves the kids into accepting the wild life they’re now involved with. This notion takes readers into the close. BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #11 (DC COMICS)

The heat is on in Gotham City. A deadly arsonist is loose. Body counts are rising. Batman is early in his career and putting the pieces together. All signs point towards Dr. Sereika. Gotham’s newest coroner is shrouded in mystery. This seems to be an open and shut case. In the case of Batman, there is no such thing as easy.

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #11 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic brings its’ second part of “The Child of Fire”.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what unfolds now!

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #11 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters shows the desperate grab for truth in the beginning pages. The pairing of Firefly and Jim Gordon is awkward to say the least. It is a necessary evil as fires are raging. The dialogue is sharp and proves Gordon is out of his element. Garfield Lynns knows exactly what he is doing. He’s playing Gordon’s insecurities against him. The same can be said for Batman.

Readers watch as the grind is wearing him down. His body is failing from the previous cases. Alfred serves as the voice of reason. He is met with some resistance. This plays into their “father-son” relationship with their exchanges. Even when progress is made, Batman still finds issues with his lecturing. The conversation with Dr. Sereika & Nicky Harris proves influential to the case. Watters paints Harris’ dark view. This leads into a frantic close. Pacing tightens up to bring all events into a shocking final phase. It is perfectly executed to show Batman’s flaws growing as Gotham’s life is on the line.

Sherman & Farrell delve into the uneasiness of Lynns and Gordon to start. The structures of panels in this series has been very impressive. It blends in full page images with bending side shots. The result presents itself with such a striking feel. The tension is brewing from Lynns getting out of the police truck. Their reactions are cold as they dive into the hot topic at hand.

This feel moves into both Batman/Alfred and Sereika and Harris. The full page image of Batman sitting on the floor is an instant win with readers. Their expressions show both frustrations with the matters at hand. Harris’ haunting dialogue is taken up some notches with the art. These moments give way to Batman’s chase in the city. Farrell’s coloring spotlights Batman’s growing hallucinations. This also works in a stunning full page image. The way the cowl is used for panels is sheer brilliance. This feel carries into the final panels. Readers will have much to look forward to in the closing chapter due to this set-up.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The pen-ultimate chapter of “Dark Patterns” presents all the makings for a superb case finish. Watters’ writing digs into the eternal struggles of the key players. Sherman and Farrell beautifully structure the drama with amazing art. This series continues to impress at every turn!

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #9 by Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Daniel Henriques, Adriano Di Benedetto, Matt Herms, Arif Prianto, Lee Loughridge, Trish Mulvihill and Dave Sharpe concludes “the Starbreaker Supremacy”

Let’s take a closer look at this final story chapter.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

There is much to break down with this finale. The writing doesn’t hesitate in dealing with John Stewart’s call. It brings out the shocking reaction of Stewart’s sacrifice. There is little time to process this plot as the fight comes to Oa. Pacing speeds events up and rightfully so. This is a war of epic levels about to arrive. Does it hit the landing? Readers will be presented a strong case of why the answer is yes.

The story goes into a head-on action sequence. If looking for action, this book displays many examples. There are key moments tied into the GLC lore. It presents a solid surge into to overall conflict. The writing does push for the resolution in a unique wat. At times, it feels rushed. Once events slow down in fallout, the call makes more sense. There isn’t a huge “WOW” moment for the conflict end. It is more subtle in delivery. The closing pages mirror this feel. There is some reflection on what transpired but may leave some questioning the lasting impact. Readers will have much to say about the final page as a new phase of the GLC starts now.

The art kicks events off with the speedy race back to Oa. Once landed, the emotional shock of Stewart’s call starts appearing. Hal Jordan’s disbelief shines in these panels. It doesn’t have much time to grow as the fight hits home. From this point, the art gives readers what they want. It’s nothing but fast paced action from here on out.

A two page splash brings readers into the battle. It’s everything they could want in such a chaotic scenario. There are some quick side-drama panels which only add more weight to the fight. The action picks right up from here. Readers watch as many of their favorites get much needed panel time against Starbreaker’s crew. This ultimately leads into the fight finish. The art shows the heroes’ play to win. It explains their call as this starts a domino effect to end with. The epilogue brings out more heartfelt reactions of what transpired. It might not be enough for some to cement the finish. They will have more reaction to the final page. The full image reveals someone who will have major questions surrounding them next issue.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.2

“The Starbreaker Supremacy” concludes with a definitive finish, but not without its flaws. The writing gives readers many moments to cheer about. There’s plenty of big action courtesy of the art team. How it finishes feels lacking in certain degrees, but that will be up to readers to decide on. Either way, a new era of GLC starts with the final page and a new outlook coming.

TRANSFORMERS #25 by Robert Kirkman, Dan Mora, Jorge Corona, Mike Spicer, & Rus Wooton (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kirkman takes a unique set-up for this issue’s plot. The first portion is dealing with Megatron’s defeat. Corona is on art duties for this portion. Readers watch as the defeated Decepticon lays into his followers. It is an intense moment as he shreads them down. The writing focuses on the frustration of easy victory. It also presents a new found purpose for their attacks. An example is made of another key player before moving forward. It sets a dark tone before moving on to the Autobots.

Mora’s pencils jumpstart the Earth Autobot portion. Prime is reconnecting with a world scared of who they are. It poses the normal fears associated with these figures. This gives way to a quick fight with Soundwave. The fight gives way to an introduction of a more dangerous threat looming. Readers watch as more players come into light. One in particular opens up a whole new possibility for the Energon Universe. This pushes towards a tempting deal with more teased along the way.

The closing Cybertron portion bookends the ramifications of the battle. There is no downplaying the emotions felt by one Autobot. The dialogue is sharp with hurt. Readers watch as this ignites a larger problem at hand. Dissention in the ranks won’t heal an already depleted squad. The final panel would suggest peaceful talks are off the table for a better future. There’s much intrigue with what’s happening here.

Corona bids farewell by taking Megatron’s anger to the panels. The opening full page pulls no punches. The Decepticon is angry. This leads into a loud two page splash. The violent mood shifts further into their ranks. Another two page splash dresses down his forces. It is a statement image. This boils over into setting an example of a fallen member. Its’ fallout leaves a haunting message with Wooton’s lettering leading the way. One path is taken. Another starts on a calmer note.

Mora’s run starts with a simple interaction of Prime and young girl. Following a near full page, the images convey how much Prime cares for humans. Even in their lowest point, he remains committed. This takes a pause to allow Mora to flex his action muscles. The fight between Soundwave and Prime is brief but impactful. While the wrestling moves may slow down, the exciting battles won’t.

Events move fast to Prime’s dealing with the US Army. The reactions are quiet but Mora focuses on Prime’s eyes. They tell a story in itself. Another major secret is revealed via near full page. This lends itself to introduce another major debut. How this character fits in changes the dynamic on Earth.

As for Cybertron, readers see the defeat and rage looming. The panels are brief but scream the frustration of Prime’s moves. The closing page leaves little doubt over one Autobots reaction. This sets the stage for a darker road to travel as this series gets moving.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The next phase of Transformers starts off on a very strong note. Kirkman leads readers into new directions while tying up loose ends. Mora’s electric artwork thrives in this ever-evolving Universe. There’s no way anyone reads this issue without demanding for more!

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #13 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, & Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle is forever “complicated”. It should come as no surprise that those themes remain here. Snyder walks readers into a past moment of Kyle’s influence before speeding to the present. Once here, the troubled souls do what they do best. The writing brings out their flawed alter egos even in an intimate setting. This transitions into a “normal” date night which is anything but.

A run-in with the Red Hood gang takes readers into a new course. The banter with Kyle and Wayne is classic. Seeing how broken Bruce is with what happened jumps out. Even as the playful dialogue with Kyle roams, the fear in his voice is evident. This garners support from an unlikely source. Readers will be extremely excited to see who debuts here. This ultimately leads into a resurgence of confidence. The moment teeters truth and a brave face. Readers can decide which is real. As events close, there is no doubt on where this all leads. It sets the stage for a showdown where there’s no real winners coming back. Settle in for this one.

Dragotta and Martin open with a flashback moment between the long-time lovers. It is a quieter look in comparison to the chapter, but conveys their bond. Once in the present, the familiar superhero themes come into play. Catwoman makes a loud statement via half page image. This gives way to a more intimate sequence. Its’ aftermath shows how both Wayne and Kyle are finding comfort in the other, even as their issues loom.

An excellent full page image launches them into the Red Hood world. Readers watch as they are comfortable in the initial action. The art reflects their familiarity with the other as a fight happens. This gives way for a disturbing reaction from Wayne. It is clear that he is not well due to Bane’s actions. The moment is upstaged by a full page debut of a fan-favorite. Timing is perfect as the main event takes form. Seeing Batman’s “warning” is bold in delivery. It’s enough to move events to a somber close. The images reflect the desperate times at hand. They close one door for now as the pre-fight plans are staged. It sends events into the brutal showdown forth coming. There’s no way not to be excited about what’s coming.

DC K.O. #1 by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Xermánico, Javier Fernández, Alejandro Sánchez & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou kicks off an ambitious new storyline.

Let’s ring the bell and get this saga started!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Leave it to Scott Snyder to craft such a wild concept. Opening the story with a board game among friends eases readers into the book. It doesn’t take long for the action to pick up. A new and deadlier Darkseid has arrived. His devastation is endless. Multiple heroes are taken down in combat. This leads to the real truth to come to light. The Quorum has presented their case of what’s to come.

Readers watch as the proposed solution is a gamble to say the least. The writing shows the extreme lengths in question. After seeing how Darkseid has risen to his new level, it casts doubts of all hope. This moves into breaking down the possible answer. Snyder shows the difficult build toward the imposed deadline. Scenes vary from forging attacks to saying goodbye. This results in a chaotic close. There’s plenty of action to flood the pages. In its wake is the opening stages of the fight for the crown. The close teases much before dropping a major bombshell. After finishing reading this, there’s no question that readers have walked into a true event.

Fernández & Sánchez open up with Superman ready for a fight. It is a brief but effective pace setter. Even as the “game night” teases a calm, it isn’t permanent. The two page spreads of Darkseid laying waste to Earth is huge! The art shows how global his attack truly is. Laying waste to the heroes in beginning raises his threat levels. This quickly wraps up as the Quorum takes stage. In this moment, a full page brings Darksied’s rise to the forefront.

The weight of the possible solution is not an easy one to carry. Superman’s expressions scream the deadly cost at hand. Batman’s calm sense gives way to an emotional onslaught. This carries into the previously mentioned splashes. The “end of days” feel shines in these pages. This gives off a bittersweet aura as the heroes prepare for combat. There is also a few shocking moments as to who’s eluded to join the party. As great as these scenes are, the final panel takes it home. It is a subtle one but packs quite a goodbye punch. No better way to end an event like this.

ARCBOUND #6 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman, Frank William and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

There is much to break down with this chapter. Unlocking the secrets of the vault proves grave. Xander has always thought to be a step ahead. The writing sets him up in a new direction. Knowing how many shifting moves are in place, it should come with little surprise. Xander even knows this too. This pushes forward with an intense standoff that becomes more personal.

Readers watch as Xander implies his devilish ways. Throwing a deal on the table becomes the catalyst for action. The series ultra violent combat comes into play in this phase. It moves events into dangerous chances. One of which is made by Zon. Readers watch as something is unlocked that exposes much truth. The dialogue mirrors the utter shock of their reality. It moves the story into a very scrambled finish.

There are a few character moves that give pause. It almost becomes fatal until the final page. Once here, the story lands for now with no certain path of direction next. The audience will have to make their own theories until this story returns to shops.

Smallman and William go all in on the brutality for this chapter. Watching Xander maneuver between parties shows his deceitful nature. It is a calm moment before Warr takes over. Near full page panels shows him at his worst. The sequences set a tense feel to the event at hand. It conveys the horrible truth to all: no one will survive.

Xander’s personal attack does strike a few chords. Readers see what depths he will go to. This move enrages Kai, who starts the fight. This falls back onto the formula this series has used since issue one. There is no shortage of over the top violence. A multi paneled page shows all key players before one steals the show.

This leads to a few full pages unlocking some ugly realities of this world. The fallout is more puzzling due to character actions. This leads to the frantic closing pages. A calm final panel says goodbye for now but leaves the door open for more whenever that shall be.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

Arcbound wraps up its first arc with some character twists and big action. The writing moves key players into new roles. Extreme action is what the art brings out. SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #44 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Jessica Slaughter may not have been the best mentor for a young hunter in training. On a mission in upstate New York, there has been a disconnect between her and Erica Slaughter. This rift isn’t solving a case of murders any faster. It certainly won’t keep both alive much longer.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #44 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) continues its’ look into a past mission of Erica Slaughter.

Let’s take a closer look at where events land now.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #44 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

As with much of SIKTC, it is the best at slow burn drama. Tynion dives into the aspects of Aaron Slaughter for a good portion of the book. His search for answers leads into a roadblock at the Order of St. George. The writing is sharp as it showcases the quiet conflict. Once there is some ground broken, more is revealed to the audience. Whenever the Order is involved, there is no such thing as open and shut.

Readers see when the story swings back to Erica/Jessica, time is focused on Jessica’s perspective. The dialogue with her and a hotel employee jumps out. As more clues become into light, there seems to be darkness brooding in the background. This pushes towards a very surprising final act. Throwing in a flashback of Jessica’s into the game gives more weight to her erratic behavior here. It provides a few twists before bowing out gracefully. Another case of strong set-up which is never a bad thing.

Dell’edera and Muerto keep events very grounded for this issue. Aaron Slaughter’s morning routine is simple in nature. This is a calm before a larger storm. The eyes tell a story as the inquiry of a case causes tension. It is a very strong delivery while fine detail in presentation.

Erica and a witness to the case have an easier exchange of dialogue. There is much optimism on Erica’s face as she discusses events. This shifts quickly to Jessica’s methods. A suborn approach to hotel rules leads to the most impactful art of the book. The flashback sequence pops off the page. This is largely due to Muerto’s coloring. The light tones add more to the fear growing into the unknown. This builds into the final image. It sets the stage for a larger payoff much in this series winning formula of storytelling.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

What really happened on Valmont Mountain? The mystery continues to peel back layers in the latest SIKTC chapter. Tynion’s writing is relentless in building the drama. Dell’edera and Muerto bring out the tension with each panel. This series continues to set a high quality level of storytelling every time out.

Readers watch as Andra maneuvers through the battle of tech vs. Magic. It leans into many superhero themes while forging its’ own feel. This moves events into the closing portion. It is a great closing to a very entertaining read.

Melo & Peratelli craft great images to take Andra on this journey. The opening sparring session is light hearted. It also conveys the growing worry of Andra’s new role. The self confidence shines in a full page mirror shot. This moves into the main story easily. Working with the cadets leads to a few comical scenes. Even as serious as her doubt gets, the art never lets Andra slip to far. This helps when the main conflict arrives.

The dream sequence is solid as it teases more coming later. While brief, it makes the mark. This allows the story to transition to Orkas Island. The art mixes in the key emotional panels before letting the main villain take hold. A full page image gives a grand entrance. this is matched equally by one of Andra armored and ready. The first round is a great build for later. Readers watch as the lessons learned here carry over to the eventual next round.

Panels reflect what the supporting cast is processing. There are many various looks given here. This helps to build up the rally of hope for later. X-MEN: AGE OF REVELATION OVERTURE #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

A new age is upon the Marvel Universe. Doug Ramsey has become the heir to Apocalypse. This new stat quo led him to the doors of the X-Men. Ramsey offered to join the group. After a vote accepted him into ranks, Cyclops was psionically attacked.

As he now wakes up ten years into the future, all has changed. Welcome to the Age of Revelation!

X-MEN: AGE OF REVELATION OVERTURE #1 by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J. P. Mayer, Edgar Delgado & Clayton Cowles debuts a volatile era in X-Men history.

Let’s take a closer look at how this debut fares.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Much like previous “Age” storylines, taking risks on characters is always a gamble. MacKay teases all is not what it seems early. The picture of Ramsey’s Chorister visiting a ravaged territory is prime example. Readers watch as the scene turns deadly quickly. It is a reflection of the struggle against tyranny. How we get to this stage is unclear. The audience does get answers via a time-displaced Scott Summers.

After the events of X-Men #22, Summers’ mind has been swapped into the future. The writing walks through the pivotal moments. As the writing shifts to Ramsey, there is a very familiar feel to his character. It is easy to see how power corrupted him. This pushes for extreme measures to be taken. Much like the alternate timelines do, characters get new stat quos. One that remains the same is Ramsey’s enforcer. Readers watch as his ruthless attack leaves many bodies in his path. It leaves an definitive exclamation point on where this story is going. The closing page feels out of place as far as impact. It is solid for what it wants to say. Get ready for a dangerous fight on the horizon.

Stegman and the art team bring out the intensity of this new world. The opening sequence teases peace until a brutal death. A half page panel sets the tone for what lies ahead concerning that. This moves into Cyclops’ awakening in the future. His reactions mirror the questions arising in this land. The full page image of a destroyed United States territory explains much of this broken world.

Readers watch as Ramsey comes into focus as Revelation. His mannerism reflect the brash drive he’s trying to instill. There is a sense of “Joffrey of Game Of Thrones” to his body language. Even as more characters and action start unfolding, one stands out above the rest. Ramsey’s enforcer makes his way into the story via full page. It is all gas and no breaks from this point. There’s plenty of wild action as the bodies start piling up. One X-Man makes an extreme sacrifice to stop events.

The fallout is given a proper full page. This is followed by a strong image of more aftermath as all parties process what happened. The final page is more simple in delivery. It conveys Ramsey’s thoughts & provides a safe landing spot for concluding the opening round.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.3

The latest X-Event starts off with a very familiar theme before switching into high gear. MacKay’s writing leans into the desperate fight for survival. Stegman and the art team construct fantastic action sequences that hold little back. How this ultimately plays out is anyone’s guess.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #12 (DC COMICS)

Can you say No to a Demon? That is the tough question Kal-El from Krypton must answer. Ra’s Al Ghul wants the Man of Tomorrow as his heir. Knowing the limitless possibilities of Superman with his Lazarus Corp, Ghul won’t hear any objection to his demands. He’s also not above killing anyone in the way of getting what he wants.

Not even the people of Smallville are safe…

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #12 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey pits Krypton’s last son with a dangerous ultimatum.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what is happening now.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #12 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreolaand Becca Carey (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Aaron provides no sympathy for Superman and his allies in this story. The opening moments with Martha Kent spins a personal blow to hope. This only grows as Jimmy, Lois and Kal escape Ghul’s clutches. With personal losses still felt, the writing escapes to a hidden time. Watching Kal-El process what happened to the Kents hits nerves. Seeing the young boy reeling only makes the current conflict greater.

Readers walk back certain times in Kal-El’s life. The sense of wanting to belong takes hold. Sol’s dialogue keeps hitting points as emotions run high. A classic Superman element is introduced in an ingenious way. Aaron also spins a few more Smallville mythos into play with a diner scene. The impact is instant and mirrors what Superman does: inspires. This pushes towards a calm before the storm. Watching the 3 “heroes” try outrunning their troubles falls short. The final page will leave jaws dropped as the Demon refuses to take no for an answer. Brace for War.

Sandoval returns for art duties on this issue. Martha Kent’s joyous panels sent an eerie message of the doom coming. This gets moved aside for a strong two page splash of Superman and company. It provides a segway to start Kal’s flashbacks. There’s plenty of pet up frustration pour out of the young Kryptonian. Seeing how he starts understanding his powers becomes a major factor.

Readers watch as he vents his growing frustrations. It leads into a magnificent full page vision of classic Superman lore. The diner sequence is filled with hope as the dire situation starts to loom. Its’ aura carries into Kal-El’s thoughts. Returning back to Kansas hits differently. It leads to a reformed sense of purpose and connection. A full page vision cements that foundation. There is a small sense of this being “too good to be true.” This momentum moves into the closing act. Panels take a darker approach as the Demon starts his plans. The final page makes a bold statement as to the Hell coming. Whether Superman survives is another question.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

A symbol of hope looks to find some before a dark destiny arrives. Aaron constructs a deep look inside Krypton’s last son. Sandoval and Arreola unleash the emotional build with the art. After the last page, will the world of Superman ever be the same?

JSA #12 by Jeff Lemire, Diego Olortegui, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) pits the legendary team against unsurmountable odds

Let’s take a deeper dive into this arc finale!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lemire stages an intense main event for this conclusion. The lead in with the global cameos adds to the danger present. It perfectly leads readers into the wild fight upon them. There are plenty of group combat moments between the longtime rivals. Kid Eternity winds up stealing some scenes in the mix. The action continues to push pace. Lemire ties in some smaller threads before the team gest some much needed back-up.

Once the calvary arrives, the story swings into a desperate attempt to win. The writing borrows from the past to inspire the future. Lemire dives into the vintage knowledge with a well-timed speech. This becomes the driver for the final act. Readers watch as the Society goes All in for the close. It results in a more modern finish. The epilogue cleans up loose threads before a twist throws off everything. A guest star appears who’s presence looks to shape where the JSA heads to in “Year One”. It’s a fitting end to the classic superhero adventure being told.

Olortegui & Guerrero open up with a haunting vision. The effects of the Unnamed Ones is felt throughout the DCU. Sneaking in cameos helps to push the danger level to the audience. The art spares no expense on showing the toll taken on this current mission. The action sequences shine in these moments as well. There is never an escape of a “big fight” feel.

A strong two page splash brings in the reinforcements. This will certainly be a crowd pleaser. Each panel feels magnified as time slips away. The detail in the Unnamed Ones can’t be ignored. A half page image shows them on the move. Readers watch as Doctor Fate and Kid Eternity step into the spotlight. Eternity’s “pep talk” goes over with great emotion. This spins into a two page splash ending the fight. It’s complimented by a near full page image highlighting the victors.

Readers get a solid epilogue. Rarely have we seen genuine smiles on the JSA. There are plenty of images reflecting the newfound hope. It is dashed on the last page. The returning character strikes a nerve as the new reset looks to be short lived. Any superhero fan will enjoy what’s transpired here.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

Have the end of days arrived for the JSA? Lemire puts them in a desperate fight for survival via the writing. Olortegui & Guerrero’s art provide the action needed for this event. A timeless tale that still holds up in modern eras.
