*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kirkman takes a unique set-up for this issue’s plot. The first portion is dealing with Megatron’s defeat. Corona is on art duties for this portion. Readers watch as the defeated Decepticon lays into his followers. It is an intense moment as he shreads them down. The writing focuses on the frustration of easy victory. It also presents a new found purpose for their attacks. An example is made of another key player before moving forward. It sets a dark tone before moving on to the Autobots.

Mora’s pencils jumpstart the Earth Autobot portion. Prime is reconnecting with a world scared of who they are. It poses the normal fears associated with these figures. This gives way to a quick fight with Soundwave. The fight gives way to an introduction of a more dangerous threat looming. Readers watch as more players come into light. One in particular opens up a whole new possibility for the Energon Universe. This pushes towards a tempting deal with more teased along the way.

The closing Cybertron portion bookends the ramifications of the battle. There is no downplaying the emotions felt by one Autobot. The dialogue is sharp with hurt. Readers watch as this ignites a larger problem at hand. Dissention in the ranks won’t heal an already depleted squad. The final panel would suggest peaceful talks are off the table for a better future. There’s much intrigue with what’s happening here.

Corona bids farewell by taking Megatron’s anger to the panels. The opening full page pulls no punches. The Decepticon is angry. This leads into a loud two page splash. The violent mood shifts further into their ranks. Another two page splash dresses down his forces. It is a statement image. This boils over into setting an example of a fallen member. Its’ fallout leaves a haunting message with Wooton’s lettering leading the way. One path is taken. Another starts on a calmer note.

Mora’s run starts with a simple interaction of Prime and young girl. Following a near full page, the images convey how much Prime cares for humans. Even in their lowest point, he remains committed. This takes a pause to allow Mora to flex his action muscles. The fight between Soundwave and Prime is brief but impactful. While the wrestling moves may slow down, the exciting battles won’t.

Events move fast to Prime’s dealing with the US Army. The reactions are quiet but Mora focuses on Prime’s eyes. They tell a story in itself. Another major secret is revealed via near full page. This lends itself to introduce another major debut. How this character fits in changes the dynamic on Earth.

As for Cybertron, readers see the defeat and rage looming. The panels are brief but scream the frustration of Prime’s moves. The closing page leaves little doubt over one Autobots reaction. This sets the stage for a darker road to travel as this series gets moving.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The next phase of Transformers starts off on a very strong note. Kirkman leads readers into new directions while tying up loose ends. Mora’s electric artwork thrives in this ever-evolving Universe. There’s no way anyone reads this issue without demanding for more!
