GREEN LANTERN CORPS #9 (DC COMICS)

The end is here for the Green Lantern Corps. Starbreaker and his corps stole the emotions powering Lantern rings. This resulted in a reign of terror onto the universe. It has challenged the Emerald protectors in ways never thought possible.

After the Sorrow Lantern was destroyed, a major blow was dealt to Starbreaker. It was not enough. A sacrifice was made to unlock the energy of the Central Power Batteries. The other Lantern corps are reactivated. Power is back in evil hands in some cases. The ends justified the means as the fight now comes to Oa.

For the fate of the universe, there is no room to fail.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

There is much to break down with this finale. The writing doesn’t hesitate in dealing with John Stewart’s call. It brings out the shocking reaction of Stewart’s sacrifice. There is little time to process this plot as the fight comes to Oa. Pacing speeds events up and rightfully so. This is a war of epic levels about to arrive. Does it hit the landing? Readers will be presented a strong case of why the answer is yes.

The story goes into a head-on action sequence. If looking for action, this book displays many examples. There are key moments tied into the GLC lore. It presents a solid surge into to overall conflict. The writing does push for the resolution in a unique wat. At times, it feels rushed. Once events slow down in fallout, the call makes more sense. There isn’t a huge “WOW” moment for the conflict end. It is more subtle in delivery. The closing pages mirror this feel. There is some reflection on what transpired but may leave some questioning the lasting impact. Readers will have much to say about the final page as a new phase of the GLC starts now.

The art kicks events off with the speedy race back to Oa. Once landed, the emotional shock of Stewart’s call starts appearing. Hal Jordan’s disbelief shines in these panels. It doesn’t have much time to grow as the fight hits home. From this point, the art gives readers what they want. It’s nothing but fast paced action from here on out.

A two page splash brings readers into the battle. It’s everything they could want in such a chaotic scenario. There are some quick side-drama panels which only add more weight to the fight. The action picks right up from here. Readers watch as many of their favorites get much needed panel time against Starbreaker’s crew. This ultimately leads into the fight finish. The art shows the heroes’ play to win. It explains their call as this starts a domino effect to end with. The epilogue brings out more heartfelt reactions of what transpired. It might not be enough for some to cement the finish. They will have more reaction to the final page. The full image reveals someone who will have major questions surrounding them next issue.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.2

“The Starbreaker Supremacy” concludes with a definitive finish, but not without its flaws. The writing gives readers many moments to cheer about. There’s plenty of big action courtesy of the art team. How it finishes feels lacking in certain degrees, but that will be up to readers to decide on. Either way, a new era of GLC starts with the final page and a new outlook coming.
