The art adds a sense to drama to the reveal of the mastermind behind the horror. With a near full page, the moment carries a defiant aura. This leads into the beginning of the final act.

With the heroes initial strike of redemption, the art captures the sense of victory slipping away. It is also complimented with a dramatic return of a fan-favorite. Let’s take a closer look at where things play out now.

GRIM #18 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This is a tale of two stories. Both carry equal weight. Since its’ return, Grim has been spotlighting members of the supporting cast. Harold (featured on the cover) gets his minutes of Fame. Phillips crafts an ethical question surrounding his existence. It is a strength to his character, This also allows two key figures to have some of their history unveiled. It is a great opening lead mixed in with the rock and roll vibe this series is known for.

The other story jumps to present events. Catching up to where the world has gone to Hell (literally), Phillips bears the importance of Harold in his greater role. Seeing him mix it up with his “boss” made for a well-paced break in the drama. The build to confronting the present day horror gets another layer added. Once the showdown finally commences, the impact on the readers will be huge and worth the wait.

It is literally impossible to read an issue of Grim and not be completely blown away by the art and imagery. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolintano take the flashback moments and dive deep into the unpredictability of that era.

Under the words of Johnny Cash, Harold’s tale pops off the pages. The panels of view through Harold’s eyes are next level creative. This leads into a two-page montage that encompasses Harold’s journey. It’s filled with haunting lyrics, excellent coloring and show-stopping images. This team sets the bar extremely high for others to follow. Once readers arrive at the final panel, the parting image will make a loud statement as to a new chapter in Jessica’s path of destiny.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

When you have a creative team like Phillips, Flaviano, Renzi and Napolintano pushing the creative boundaries each issue, you know to expect great storytelling. This issue has everything readers want. High drama, imaginative panels and a story that doesn’t escape attention. Don’t miss it.

Let’s take a deeper dive as the past becomes present!

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #38 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue features a wounded Erica being discovered by a couple of kids in a treehouse. Tynion sets up the discovery with wonder and confusion. Getting the outsider perspective helps to grow the mystique of her missions. How do outsiders comprehend what she does?

This element comes into play when the Order checks in. The conversation breaks up the serious tone with its’ awkwardness. Once Erica interjects, the mood shifts back to a more serious tone. Tynion reveals just enough of the past to keep readers in suspense.

The conclusion ends with a level feel. There is no extra drama needed. It is a conclusion that just says goodbye. In this line of work, there is no heartfelt goodbyes. It’s always strictly business as the final page states.

The art captures the uncertainty of the children who discover erica. Their reactions play into the unknown factor of their discovery. A two page sequence connects this point to readers with ease. Erica’s response to being discovered also carries a presence.

The panels display her showing some moments of normalcy. There is a small sequence of cutting hair that displays the missing portion of a normal life. With a strong parting shot, the story closes its doors as its’ on to the next case.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The outsider view of Erica Slaughter’s life catches readers with a dialogue driven tale. Tynion spins the contrasting worlds together with the writing. The art brings out many reactions to events at hand. All the while, readers witness sides to Erica rarely seen. All in all, a solid stop into a mysterious past.

ABSOLUTE POWER : GROUND ZERO #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the countdown to extinction starts for the DC Universe. Over the past few years, the seeds have been planted. Fans that have read Batman, Superman, Titans: Beast World, and Suicide Squad: Dream Team just to name a few, have seen the work. One character has been weaving her plans in the shadows. Her name is AMANDA WALLER.

Now, one of the DC Universe’s most dangerous people is about to unleash her plans into the spotlight.

ABSOLUTE POWER: GROUND ZERO #1 by Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Skylar Patridge, Patricio Delpeche, Steve Wands, Chip Zdarsky, V. Ken Marion, Joshua Williamson and Gleb Melnikov (DC COMICS) showcases the final moments before Waller takes her plans for the DC Heroes to a whole new level.

Let’s see how things look before ABSOLUTE POWER begins!

ABSOLUTE POWER: GROUND ZERO #1 by Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Skylar Patridge, Patricio Delpeche, Steve Wands, Chip Zdarsky, V. Ken Marion, Joshua Williamson and Gleb Melnikov (DC COMICS) Cover: Dan Mora

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue is broken into three separate Stages:

Stage #1 by Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Skylar Patridge, Patricio Delpeche, and Steve Wands centers around Jay Nakamura. On Gammora Island, Waller has taken out its’ president. Nakamura is next on the list, but where does Dreamer’s loyalties lie?

Stage #2 by Waid, Chip Zdarsky, V. Ken Marion, Delpeche and Wands features the latest “recruit” of the Suicide Squad: John Starr aka Time Commander. Waller has a certain mission for Starr’s skills. The mission is not one of enjoyment. Starr is given the task of bringing back a robotic evil that took a combined effort of the Bat-Family to defeat!

Stage #3 by Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov and Wands serves as an epilogue to the “House Of Brainiac” storyline in Action Comics and Superman. With a very big loose end to address, Waller takes it upon herself to handle this variable. What results may be the final piece to her puzzle of Absolute Power!

If anyone is new to the world of Amanda Waller, this book will give you enough insight on why she is hated and feared in the DCU. Each stage shows a varying degree. The first is the effect of her presence on Dreamer.

Stage One is a heavily emotionally driven tale. The conversations with Nakamura and Dreamer will catch readers attention. Dreamer comes across as a sympathetic character caught between what’s right and what is perceived right by Waller. Where her character goes from here will be one story to watch moving forward.

Patridge and Delpeche focus much on the art on the facial reactions of the two leads. The anger and self loathing will lock in readers. The images connect how personal the actions and consequences are. In the conclusion, the panels tease what’s next. Will it be a road to redemption or slipping deeper into danger? Only time will tell.

Stage Two borrows a similar theme from the beginning stage. Starr is a reluctant character forced to work against his will. Knowing what lies ahead, the sense of danger and anxiety ring true. It serves as a gateway from Zdarsky’s Batman to the crossover. The story is a very quick one but does a fair job in explaining what is forthcoming in the event.

Marion crafts a fast moving tale with the writing team. The only moments of pause are Starr’s looks of peril. It never escapes reader’s attention as his fear of what is coming grows with each page. The near full page ending drives home the regret of what has transpired and how Starr is sinking quickly into a grave dug by Waller.

Arguably the strongest stage of all, Stage Three leaves no question at how heartless Waller can be to get what she wants. Her plan to influence an impressionable key player connects with readers. It is devious from start to finish. The concluding act drops a big exclamation point to casting the first shot into her enemies.

Melnikov brings out the best of Waller’s imposing personality. The reactions to events never rattle the head of Task Force X. This is easy to cypher when she puts her plans in motion. Seeing how she puts up a facade with the unknowing victim echoes the lines crossed for her impending victory. The stage is capped off with a full page spread welcoming the beginning of the end. Brace for impact.

FINAL POINT: 8

Welcome to a new era of danger courtesy of Amanda Waller. Each stage serves as a compliment to previous stories, but is a solid entry point for new readers. The writing goes to great lengths to amplify what Waller is capable of. The art plays off the emotional pull of the reluctant characters turned pawns in the quest for Absolute Power.

SUPERMAN #15 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of a monster Superman event! One of his deadliest foes has created a great evil. When Lex Luthor is even scared of what has been unleashed, it speaks volumes. It also calls for drastic measures to try stopping a Queen from ascending to her violent throne!

SUPERMAN #15 by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS) is the final stop before ABSOLUTLE POWER!

Let’s see if what they say is true…Does the house always win? Especially if it’s the HOUSE OF BRAINIAC?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson wastes no time in jumping right into the action. During his run, Superman and Lex Luthor have had a unique “frienemy-ship” to say the least. In this closing chapter, both go above and beyond in their efforts to stop Brainiac. The writing shows one making an extreme gamble. This serves as a solid back-drop to the overall cinema-esque style battle raging on.

The conclusion of conflict is one that hits the mark. Brainiac is displayed with some very key reactions to the action at hand. Once the fallout begins, scenes become chaotic with the pacing. It reflects the time sensitive challenge the heroes are up against. In the aftermath, there are some feel-god moments to close with. However, the final few pages with have readers buzzing to what is down the road (pending Absolute Power).

Sandoval and Sánchez construct a pair of two page splashes that readers won’t want to turn the pages from. It instantly builds the rising action. The art showcases the wide ranges of Brainiac’s emotions. Events take place that disrupt the cold, imposing figure. In its wake lies a broken and unsure figure. The art captures the rage of Superman while gifting Brainiac some knowledge he can’t comprehend.

The conclusion plays out as expected. There’s a few images that will jump out to readers. None might be bigger than a Luthor panel and the final page. Both spell disaster for the Man of Steel. They both will have fans attention in the upcoming months as well.

FINAL POINT: 8.9

“House Of Brainiac” closes in an explosive finale. Williamson gifts fans with big action and stronger heroics with the writing. Sandoval, Sánchez and Maher construct a electric and chaotic showdown with the art. As impactful as that is, just wait for the final page!

Hit me up on ODPHpod social media and let me know your thoughts on Superman #15. Thanks for reading!

ACTION COMICS #1066 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, we have arrived at the Pen-Ultimate chapter of a shocking Superman event! Lines have been crossed. Blood has been spilled. In a twisted quest for knowledge, BRAINIAC has created an unstoppable evil. With a rising body count, can the Man of Steel stop a creation who wiped out an entire army of Czarnians?

ACTION COMICS #1066 by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Miguel Mendonca, Alejandro Sánchez and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS) brings the fight to the BRAINIAC QUEEN! Who will be left standing in the wreckage?

Let’s take a closer peek and see what transpires now!

ACTION COMICS #1066 by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Miguel Mendonca, Alejandro Sánchez and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Coming off a shocking debut, The Brainaic Queen sets out to acquire more power. Standing in her way is a weakened Superman and embarrassed Lobo. Williamson quickly establishes the Queen’s long-term plan. The writing speeds into the action with a big set-up. The payoff is met with some added steps before concluding.

The “odd couple” paring of Superman and Lobo shines in this exchange. It gives the audience the “hero” comeback that is needed. The initial battle concludes somewhat quickly though. Some might feel this is underwhelming, but they have to keep in mind, there’s one more chapter left.

The story’s pace causes the focus to go back on Brainiac. With a big group of characters involved, Williamson makes ample time to start wrapping up individual plot points. Shifting gears in this manner works to send the story into a definitive final place.

Sandoval and Mendonca split art duties for the issue with Sánchez coloring. Right from the opening, readers are hit with a massive two page splash of the Brainiac Queen’s plan. This is responded with Lobo making a declaration. The panels transcend to capture a side of him rarely seen: calm and focused.

With another two page spread, the story begins a domino fall into the final act. There will be a full page image that fans will have MUCH to say about involving Lex Luthor. It fits the drastic times of which the Superman family faces. With a definitive final attack staged, the chapter ends leaving fans excited to see the conclusion unfold.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

With hope fading fast, the Man of Steel wages a comeback against Brainaic and his greatest creation. Williamson speeds events along with solid writing. The art team builds the action with some excellent images. The closing moment ensures readers will get their money’s worth heading into the “House” finale.

G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO #307 by LARRY HAMA, PAUL PELLETIER, TONY KORDOS, FRANCESCO SEGALA, SABRINA DEL GRASSO and PAT BROSSEAU (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) - Cover: Andy Kubert

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Serpentor is making big moves in the attempt to take out Cobra Commander. Hama juggles the three factions to build up more suspense for the eventual blowout. The writing depicts Serpentor grasping for control. Seeing something is awry on the island, troops are sent to investigate. The fallout is vintage G.I. Joe action which is sure to please.

Some of the other side plots get a moment to shine. Dawn’s mourning of her parents and Destro’s manipulations are key areas fans will latch onto. The closing act steers back full circle. Serpentor is the driving force in this plot and looks to have more plans up his sleeve. This is another steady read which keeps things rolling towards another epic moment.

Pelletier directs the action front and center with this chapter. The panels feel fast and dives into the tense situation of outrunning Serpentor. The emotional fallout of Dawn with the Joes is another key element of this book. It shows the tolls for the actions taken. It leaves readers with a greater sense of the mission at hand. Once in the final pages, the art elevates the conflict. The closing page is a great cliffhanger to depart on while building towards what’s next.

FINAL POINT: 8

Tensions are rising as Serpentor makes moves that have the world on notice. Hama weaves in classic action with some intrigue in the writing. Pelletier leans into the big action and emotional toll with the classic feel of the art. Since its’ return, the series hasn’t missed a beat. Anyone wondering about G.I. Joe’s impact simply needs to check this series out to understand the hype.

REDCOAT #3 (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, Ghost Machine’s favorite immortal continues to stumble towards trouble. Simon Pure is unique to say the least. Granted immortality in 1776, he has made more enemies than friends since then. Now in 1892, Simon has a sidekick in the form of a 13yr old Albert Einstein.

He’s going to need all the help he can get with his latest crisis.

REDCOAT #3 by Geoff Johns, Bryan Hitch, Brad Anderson, Andrew Currie and Rob Leigh shows how time is not really on Simon’s side.

Let’s take a closer look at what transpires now.

REDCOAT #3 by Geoff Johns, Bryan Hitch, Brad Anderson, Andrew Currie, and Rob Leigh (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

At first glance, how can a book work with Benedict Arnold, a young Albert Einstein and “an immortal tool”? That’s what makes Redcoat stand out from everything else on NCBD! Johns, Hitch and the team constructs a world of humor and fantasy like no other here. The banter with Arnold informing the pair of Pure’s problem is fun and insightful about the bigger forces at play.

This leads into the action with Pure’s past literally catching up with him. Pacing ramp up for the conflict. Readers will be locked in as Einstein and Pure race against the clock to stop Pure’s fate. This leads into a few curve balls added into the mix. Fallout from the chase of Pure’s attackers spiral events towards an interesting finish. Once the last page is read, there is no possible way readers are not immediately counting down the days till the next issue release.

The art shines as always with this latest chapter. A fantastic two-page spread ushers in the dilemma at hand. The reactions of Arnold and Einstein are priceless as their brooding conflict advances. Speaking of two page spreads, readers’ jaws will drop seeing the detail Hitch puts in on the “secret entrance”.

The action sequences flow with ease from page to page. Never escaping the readers eyes are Einstein’s youthful wonder and Pure’s struggle as time is slipping away. This all leads to a closing page that speaks volumes for the unpredictability of this story and character.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

The life and decades of Simon Pure never cease to amuse and amaze in the latest chapter. Johns pens an exciting tale with flawless writing. Hitch and the team gift readers many incredible pages, making this an absolute must-read series! Don’t miss it when it drops!

DESTRO #1 (SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT/IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the Energon Universe is expanding! One year ago, Void Rivals became the unlikely launching point for a new universe. Spinning out of there has been Transformers. Along with Optimus Prime and company, the G.I. Joe fandom has been making waves.

Duke and Cobra Commander launched the first wave of books. From both books, a notorious arms dealer has emerged from the shadows. Is the Energon Universe ready for what he is preparing?

DESTRO #1 by Dan Watters, Andrei Bressan, Adriano Lucas and Rus Wooton brings forth a new threat to the ever-evolving landscape of COBRA!

Let’s take a closer look at what is unfolding here.

DESTRO #1 by Dan Watters, Andrei Bressan, Adriano Lucas and Rus Wooton (SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT/IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters wastes little time in establishing Destro as a force. The takeover of Darklonia is precise in its brutality and message. Destro comes across as a shrewd businessman with grand expectations. His conversations with Cobra Commander play heavy into the “frienemy” territory that has defined their relationship for decades.

The writing also allows for more rivals to make a big introduction. Fans will be very pleased to see a certain pair hit the pages. Their story instantly establishes them to new readers. It also meshes well with long-time fans knowing what they’re capable of.

The conclusion picks up the pace. This allows a further insight into the battle for power. Throughout this issue, Destro is driven by this notion. Heading into the final page, it is clear this is what makes him stand apart from most rogues.

Bressan and Lucas focused greatly on the man underneath the mask. He is often caught devilishly smiling when his plans are working. This comes off of the strong introduction of his forces. The images are unforgiving as the motives are driven by greed.

The other major debut mirrors much of what made Destros’ work. The images are ruthless and cold when they advance their plans. This leads to a solid closing filled with dramatic sequences. The art team leaves readers off with a bold parting visual from a declaration of intent.

FINAL POINT: 9.1

An evil threat makes a daring splash into the Energon Universe spotlight with a solid debut chapter. Watters molds the ruthlessness of business with superb writing. Bressan, Lucas and Wooton provide impactful images that proves all is fair in power and war.

Hit me up on ODPHpod social media and let me know your thoughts on Destro #1. Thanks for reading!

RODERICK AND THE CITY OF MORHIL #1 (STOUT CLUB/COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, Stout Club has recently returned to Comixology originals in a big way. After giving fans such hits as Red Tag and Hailstone, the imprint just released Mistland. Coming off that series debut is a fantasy adventure that has a style all its’ own.

RODERICK AND THE CITY OF MORHIL #1 by Eduardo Medeiros, Bruno Freire and Deyvison Manes (STOUT CLUB/COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS) prepares to take the audience on a wild ride.

Let’s see how the debut issue stacks up.

RODERICK AND THE CITY OF MORHIL #1 by Eduardo Medeiros, Bruno Freire and Deyvison Manes (STOUT CLUB/COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Medeiros delves into a few scenarios for this debut. Roderick is an easy character for fans to cheer for. The writing plays him off as blindly optimistic. This leads to his dilemma later. In the meantime, the city of MORHIL takes center stage.

The city is a mixture of fantasy and trouble. Roderick’s naive ways lead him into a sense of false trust. His “friendship” with Dritho fills up the majority of the chapter. Like any new story, there is much world-building happening. This chapter doesn’t escape that theme. The writing leads into a sharp turn heading into the close. With a surprising stat quo change, Roderick’s adventure has enough for readers to swing back through to see what happens next.

The art depicts the overload of Roderick’s faulty perceptions. Panels featuring his reading of Arnold, the Gentle Postman cements his happy attitude. There is a great page panel welcoming readers into Morhil. It comes across as impressive and imposing.

Dritro’s reactions telegraph the eventual twist. There is a sense of distrust looming around him from the beginning. This reflects some of the other residents of the city. Once the art heads into the close, it picks up on Roderick’s troubles. The closing panel is a full page simple splash that makes waves. It’s a great parting shot leading to where things head from here.

FINAL POINT: 7.8

Bright Eyes, Big City sums up Roderick’s venture into mystery with his debut chapter. The writing welcomes readers into the world of Morhil with ease. It is matched by the solid and subtle images leading to a twisting close. There is more brewing beneath the scenes than a simple delivery.

GRANDMA CHAINSAW #4 by Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balondo, Cari Salviejo, & Dave Lentz (and in memory of Jasen Smith) COVER D Art by Sajad Shah (Rabbit In A Hat/Bad Bug Media)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Dunford and Radford give readers a quick history lesson through the chaotic surroundings. Hazel is a complex character to say the least. The set-up for the final confrontation with Haiden and company is solidly built. The narration walks readers into a sudden shift in gears. This leads to a unique final act.

Tying in multiple lore’s, the writing keeps readers on their toes. However, they won’t be disappointed with the infusions of style. This book still packs the one-liners and insanity that has become a staple of this series. One member of the Dead Squad steals the show on each panel. From the conclusion of the conflict, the epilogue is vintage horror fueled. It is a fitting farewell to a horror story that fits in any time period.

Balondo crafts images that will be lingering with readers long after this series has ended. The full page introduction of Hazel lights the fuse for the explosive action later on. The two page history lesson breaks up the story in a perfect spot. It breaks just long enough to shift speed into a wild showdown.

The imagery here doesn’t shy away from the gore. It embraces it. One character gets a legendary send-off as the conclusion races towards the finish. The closing pages capture the emotional outpouring of what has just transpired. It is only outshined by the closing panel. With a simple recap, the story ends with much of what has made this series a hit: wondering what happens next.

FINAL POINT: 9.2

Since her debut, Hazel has haunted and thrilled readers with her wicked ways. Dunford and Radford sent her off with sharp humor and dramatic writing. The art is gory, blunt and unapologetic. It’s everything you want in a horror story. It’s also a story you can’t afford to miss adding to your collection.

TRANSFORMERS #9 by DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON, JORGE CORONA, MIKE SPICER AND RUS WOOTEN (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Soundwave era has delved into the ruthlessness of the most loyal Decepticon. Johnson adding Shockwave into the mix raises the stakes of conflict. Their attack shows no mercy to an already reeling Autoboyts group.

In the writing, Prime never waivers from his mission to save the Earth from their invaders. Even in a losing effort, his drive is unquestionable.

The fight set-up is everything you want from Transformers. Plus, with Johnson being a huge wrestling fan, the usage of a certain driver doesn't miss hitting its mark in the story. Outside factors are added into the already combustible mix.

This causes a highly emotional moment that should have grave ramifications. The closing pages look to build off of the new wave of faces readers see added into the mix. How this will all play out is anyone's guess. You won't want to miss the ride!

Shockwave makes a proper grand entrance with a near full page panel. Readers can instantly see how the story turns in favor of the mood and pacing. Corona, Spicer and Wooten bring the action with some incredible fight sequences. There is a strong mix of wrestling and brawling that will have fans on the edge of their seats.

Its' fallout conveys an uneasiness for what lies ahead. A small panel featuring a Transformers' fear is an image that hits its' mark. The closing pages switches gears. It will have fans curious on where the journey goes now.

FINAL POINT: 9

Shuffling the deck with a new Decepticon lead has worked wonders for an already near perfect series. Johnson pressures the Autobots into struggling depths with creative writing. The art carries a large and loud sense of the non-stop action. Corona and the team construct a fast billing conflict that fans won't want to stop. There is no question on why this series is in such high demand.

In the Impossible City, Blade has ascended. The former hero is the new lord of all vampires. He is having a conversation with a fallen hero. Black Panther is now a vampire under Blade’s rule. T’Challa has vastly changed. Giving his instructions, Blade’s conversation is over with him.

A voice speaks from the distance with an observation. Scarlet Witch lets the new lord know he has taken a loss. Wanda informs him more is coming via The Avengers.

Meanwhile on Earth, Miles Morales has transformed into a vampire. Dr. Strange intervenes and hits Miles with an attack. The blow knocks him back to his senses. Miles starts telling the Avengers, Dracula and Bloodline what he was forced to do.

In this mix, a truth is revealed that Bloodline cannot process. She has been recruited by Dracula for a sole purpose. Bloodline is the only one who can stop Blade…by killing him?!

Readers watch as the weight becomes too heavy for the young hunter. What transpires next sets forth a new path. As the darkness grows, one Avenger becomes the source of light needed to combat. Judging by the final image, is it all too late?

MacKay gives readers a break point sorley needed for the heroes. Since the beginning, Blade’s been cold and ruthless with each action. Bloodline’s reaction to events is a great counter to her father’s new persona. The writing hits the point of uncertainty and doubt about what she is being tasked to complete. It is a big moment, but another steals this issue.

An Avenger steps right into the spotlight with a speech that echoes any classic Hollywood movie. The words capture the fear and taxing pressure surrounding this fight. It leaves readers in a sense of rebellion. MacKay drops a solid counter with the final pages. The counter punch of Blade connects as this story feels far from over.

Larraz and Gracia convey the strength of the heroes in multiple areas. Scarlet Witch’s response to Blade is defiant. Readers will see her anger behind the impactful words. The moment of clarity with Bloodline is gifted a full page montage of Blade and the current state of affairs.

The Avenger spotlight starts with a near full page image. It is fitting considering what follows next. With anger and determination behind the expressions, readers can’t help but begin to think there’s a chance to win. The closing image is a full page introduction that closes events with a loud statement. There is much for readers to rave about with the art.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

An Avenger takes the spotlight by force with a turning point felt around the MCU. MacKay pens a balanced issue while the latter half elevates the chapter. Larraz, Gracia and Petit constrict the highly emotional reactions to Marvel’s bloody event with ease. The saga leaves with another big moment to exemplify why this is no ordinary story. It’s an event for a reason.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #10 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Simone Di Meo, Rex Lokus, Giovanna Niro and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The chapter opens with Man-Bat gloating about his perceived victory. Flying through the Gotham skyline, he has a prisoner in tow. Batman is shackled and along for the ride. This is ended by a flying “R” which hits the chains.

Now freed, The Dynamic Duo is back! Man-Bat’s cult leads an attack but is easily thwarted. In it aftermath, a call is made. Batman continues to go after Man-Bat. Robin is in chase to stop the hundreds of toxic-infected bats flying into the city. Can they save the day yet again?

Readers ride-along as the pair heads right into danger. Pacing ushers the excitement to a steady confrontation. In its’ wake, some loose ends are tied up. More importantly, some other avenues of adventure are left open. None will be more important than the final page reveal. A dark moment in the Wayne family is about to be revisited. Get Ready!

Williamson presents a steady finale to the current arc. Since it's beginning, the series has been anchored by the rebuilding family bond. With this chapter, the pair make great strides forward. Seeing the dialogue with Robin calling the shots was a strong point of change.

The conclusion of conflict was also another highlight. The writing kept things progressing with ease as the pair took the upper hand. It's fallout circles back to their struggles of rebuilding. The moment is poignant as to letting much needed healing starts (however short lived). It's another factor of why this series stands out from the other Bat books.

Art duties are split again which both teams leaving memorable images. De Meo and Niro kicks the story into gear with a gorgeous two page splash. Man-Bat’s depiction here carries a distinct horror feel. This leads into another two page spread that kicks off the final stand in style.

The family gets a quiet moment to regroup after everything via Čižmešija and Locus. Readers see the slow repair of the family’s broken bond via the emotions. It is a fleeting moment due to the set-up for the close, but hits its’ mark. The full page shot to conclude the issue with will most certainly have fans talking after witnessing it.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

With not a moment to spare, Gotham’s most famous father and son aim to end Man-Bat’s schemes once and for all. Williamson stacks the deck with a balance of family drama and fast paced action. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: ALPHA #1 (IDW PUBLISHING)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, a new era is ready to kick off for the heroes in a half shell. It is hard to believe that it has been 40 years since Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo debuted. Who knew at that moment that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would eventually cross over into pop culture lore?

Comics. Animation. Movies. The franchise has gone through many phases. In the end, the comics have always been a constant amongst the fan base. With a new series launch coming, IDW is giving fans an introduction into the next phase of Turtle Power.

TEENAGE MUTNAT NINJA TURTLES: ALPHA #1 by Jason Aaron, Chris Burnham, Brian Reber, Tom Waltz, Gavin Smith, Ronda Pattison and Nathan Widick (IDW Publishing) greets readers in what is forthcoming.

Let’s take a closer look and see how things shape up.

TEENAGE MUTNAT NINJA TURTLES: ALPHA #1 by Jason Aaron, Chris Burnham, Brian Reber, Tom Waltz, Gavin Smith, Ronda Pattison and Nathan Widick (IDW Publishing) - Cover: Rod Reis

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The book is broken up into two parts. The first story is “Long Way From Home” from Aaron, Burnham and Reber. It centers around one of the legendary TMNT, Donatello. Things have drastically changed for him since readers last saw him. Captured in an “Animal Safari”, the stakes are high to survive.

Aaron pens a strong return for a prelude that doesn’t miss. The dynamic of Donatello’s situation blends into familiar territory with humans vs. mutant. It reminds readers of what the Ninja Turtle is capable of when pushed. Pacing moves things right along to a close that readers won’t be able to handle the wit for the new chapter to drop.

Burnham and Reber provide a darker tone to the Safari’s shady side. Donatello’s reveal is given a near full page splash escalading events. Action sequences flow easily. This all drives towards a lasting impression of the final page. With how events are left, there will be much fans will want to find out about in the new reset.

“Monster Island” by Waltz, Smith and Pattison takes up the majority of the book. It is a great new reader friendly introduction into Mutant Nation. Old Hob and Colonel Wesley Knight are investigating a situation involving a new mutant. Can the reluctant pair work together to solve the case? Judging by the final image, there’s more developments on the horizon both need to prep for.

Waltz leans into the tensions of Hob and Knight. Their reluctancy to trust is a major point to this arc. It helps to move the story along to its’ closing pages. Once here, the pair change their demeanor to stopping the problem on the island. Its’ resolution keeps things open-ended. The story wraps up with a interesting ending that looks to pay off big when the regular series launches.

Smith and Pattison showcase the co-existence of human and mutant with the imagery. Hob and Knight’s tension is easy for readers to follow along with. Their reactions speak volumes of the shaking trust involved with this threat. The threat here makes a big entrance with a full page splash. This leads to great action panels that cap off with a eye-raising ending. The final page opens the door for what’s next as some new players enter an ever-growing landscape.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

If this is what to expect from Aaron’s run on TMNT, get ready for a legendary run. “Long Way From Home” welcomes readers into a world of dwindling hope and dangers with strong writing and art. “Monster Island” focuses in on the unique and evolving habitat of compatibility with mutants and humans. It should be a steady companion for the lead TMNT series kicking off later this summer.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The milestone opens up with a quick recap of the history of the X-Men. In nine panels, readers walk from the beginnings to the shocking choice of Charles Xavier. Choosing to bend to Orchis will to save mutantkind backfired as his students rose to the occasion. Xavier turns himself in for his crimes. His troubles have only just begun…

As an armed convoy transports him away, Wolverine gets in its’ way. This is no rescue mission. Logan is out for punishment. His quest is stopped by someone who wants to speak with Xavier first. Magneto disposes of Wolverine to have a long overdue heart to heart about the end of Krakoa.

Meanwhile, the X-Men head back to what is left of Krakoa after the fall. Kafka is waiting and has much news for the Children of The Atom. Readers watch as a major revelation takes place. Once a choice is made, some mutants are not on board. The conflict is perfect for a certain mutant who returns. Apocalypse is back on Krakoa. He doesn’t waste time in making his presence felt. How will he handle the revelations as well?

What happens next is a lasting battle for the ages. The fate of Krakoa is decided once and for all. Left in its’ wake is a new direction for the remaining mutants. A glimpse into certain futures leaves one thing this era needs: Hope. It also leaves a shocking conclusion for one character as the Krakoan legacy is not soon to be forgotten.

With the amount of talent here for the 700th issue of Uncanny X-Men, it is clear this is an end of an era. Charles Xavier proves to be a looming presence throughout the issue. The conversation with Magneto feels like a passing of the torch. Roles also feel reversed with one notable quote thrown in the mix. It is a needed area for the transition to move from this era to a new one. This leads into a eye-raising closing arc which proves nothing will be the same as it was.

The Krakoa piece doesn’t hold back on give fans strong moments. With one major revelation, it clears up one of the era’s darkest hours. Apocalypse enters the story with anger and confusion. His role in this era was a major point of surprise. Seeing the era slip away causes a natural reaction for the powerful mutant. Its’ fallout leaves readers knowing changes are on the way. This sets up an engaging playing field from a dream that most woke up from.

The art showcase comes through with the middle section of the chapter. There are some full page action images that will delight readers. Action scenes hold nothing back. There are a few images that level up in the brutality. One character shows a side of violence rarely seen. Considering the parties involved, it reflects the anger of loss with Krakoa’s fall.

Xavier and Magento’s conversation is filled with frustration and bitterness. The old friends reactions to each others quips display this, esp. Xavier. The realization of what he’s done conveys his acceptance of defeat. The emotions of loss carry into the conclusion. The series of panels saying goodbye mirror the loss of a dream. It departs with a series of images tipping the changes in the new landscape. The art leaves readers with a noteworthy closing panel that should play a bigger role down the road.

FINAL POINT: 8.9

With an oversized finale, the Krakoan era is put to rest. Stacked with an all-star line-up of creators, the writing lines up final goodbyes and new beginnings. Images of intense fighting to somber realization of a fallen dream will have fans attention. One dream is over, what will rise from its’ ashes?

From that moment, it is game on! Blackgate Prison becomes center stage. Batman vs. Failsafe! Winner take all! The action speeds things at a high pace. Multiple characters are featured in between the action. Its’ resolution is a surprise one but pays off big. This leads into another confrontation that cements the winner’s status as Gotham’s protector. The final page is a perfect send-off to where this chapter closes.

Zdarsky gives readers a massive payoff for a few threads he has been placing in his run. Captio lurking throughout this saga finally has a good purpose with the conclusion. There is a solid sequence in the closing act where the teacher becomes the student in their dialogue.

The writings’ strength is the long overdue conversation between Bruce and the Bat-Family. In Zdarsky’s run, their relationship has been continuously fractured. Before combat, Bruce does the one thing that many have been waiting for. This leads into a grounded moment that can only go upward. The resolution is very smart and gives a fitting end to this story for now. There’s a lot for superhero fans to enjoy with this one.

Jiménez and Morey feature Bruce in a rotating emotional state. The meeting with the Bat Family ranges from disappointment to new found confidence. This rolls into the final showdown flawlessly. DUCK AND COVER #4 by Scott Snyder, Rafael Albuquerque, Marcelo Maiolo and Bernardo Brice (Comixology Originals via Best Jackett Press and STOUT CLUB)

Snyder takes readers through many phases before bringing a stop to the ride. Del’s journey has ranged from tragic soul to reluctant hero. In the closing phase, Del addresses some of the looming ghosts that have haunted him. The talk with Junior is heavy in its weight on both characters. The resolution will hit readers very hard.

From here, the story shifts gears into a sense of normalcy. It is a perfect break moment feeling like a calm before the storm. The closing act feels much like a movie from Del’s collection. Resiliency and hope carries the characters into their conflict. Once the smoke clears, Del makes a stance that sets a course for if and when we see this version of the 1950’s again.

Albuquerque and Maiolo construct some memorable moments for this finale. The reveal of the shelter’s inside proves for a solid break from the drama. The emotions of the teenagers shine after the drama of the outside world. Del and Junior’s conversation is filled with regret and healing. The initial threat makes a huge entrance with a near full page panel, fighting the survivors.

RISE OF THE POWERS OF X #5 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Orchis nearly defeated the Children of the Atom. Nathaniel Essex has now become Enigma, a near god and threat to all. These events convinced Charles Xavier to cut a deal with Orchis to save mutantkind. The deal goes against everything the X-Men have fought for.

Luckily, Xavier’s students didn’t go along with plans. They made a victorious stand against Nimrod. With only one threat still looming, the fate of Mutantkind is now in one person’s hands.

Rise of the Powers of X #5 by Kieron Gillen, Luciano Vecchio, David Curiel, and Clayton Cowles (Marvel Entertainment) sets up a showdown of epic proportions.

Let’s take a closer look at the end of the Krakoan Era!

Rise of the Powers of X #5 by Kieron Gillen, Luciano Vecchio, David Curiel, and Clayton Cowles (Marvel Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The X-Men have succeeded where Xavier had failed. They have brought back Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force! In the former White Hot Room of Mutant Afterlife, Jean has emerged. A conversation is had between Jean the powerful entity. With the souls of every mutant feeding the fire, They head to space merged with a mission. Defeat Enigma or die trying.

Meanwhile, the mutants on Earth celebrate their win over Nimrod. However, there is an apprehensive voice looming. Mr. Sinister asks Destiny if it is truly over. Her reply doesn’t support positivity. She simply doesn’t tell him what she sees.

Readers watch as Phoenix flies into space for the confrontation. Enigma is waiting with all the other Dominions as backup. This truly has the “heavyweight title fight” feel the story deserves. An unforeseen play happens that causes Enigma to run away.

This leads back to the two that started the Krakoan Era in the first place: Charles Xavier and Moira. Their conversation in present time goes back to the moment on the park bench where Xavier was shown the future. It is poetic that all things come full circle.

From here, choices are made with direct impact. The fallout leads to a heroic moment that lends itself to the fight. Nothing is held back. Once the smoke clears, readers know how the future is going to play out. They also are left with a stunning ending arc. One era has ended forever and another begins.

Gillen constructs a steady end to one of comics’ biggest eras. Seeing Phoenix being the last hope for Mutants feels as a metaphor for the return of Mutants back to the classic X-Men era. While ambitious, seeing mutants driven in a more heroic stance proves feels more like the characters we all became fans off.

The writing dives into the guilt and regret of Xavier. This proves to be a strong element. Hearing his recollection of events defines how far things have come and gone. This leads into a defining moment which inspires the final stand. Its’ fallout leaves no confusion on where events now lead. It is exactly what you are looking for to conclude this chapter with.

Vecchio goes big with many full or near full page images for this issue. It helps create that “big fight feel” previously eluded to. From Enigma’s initial encounter with Phoenix to the eventual face-off later, the pages are bold and direct of how powerful these two beings are. The Jean proclamation of “We’re The X-men” is an absolute defining image for this conclusion.

Xavier’s recollection of events also stands out. The use of panels is creative in explaining his thoughts. It’s a great use of historic retelling at its core. Xavier’s final moments in the chapter will also stand out. The series of panels hold nothing back as his future is clarified for the audience. This will be a moment that fans will have much to say about.

FINAL SCORE: 9.7

The end of the Krakoan Era has arrived in grand fashion. Gillen pens a tale of reflection and fearlessness with Mutantkind’s fate hanging in the balance. Vecchio, Curiel and Cowles provide the larger than life visuals to bring this era of time to a thunderous close. This will be one story not to miss!

Starks pens a touching and exciting finale with Linnea alone in the spotlight. The first act focuses on her processing what she has just seen. It’s presented in a strong way with the readers clearly feeing her pain. The range of emotions builds towards a direction shifting moment.

The fallout spirals into an excellent close. Starks paces the actions out to maximize a game changing action. What follows next is a creative venture that gives fans much to ponder. Linnea’s journey has been one about finding strength when tragedy strikes. The conclusion doesn’t disappoint but also leaves a lasting thought on the way out.

Galán delves into Linnea’s grief with a unique panel set-up. Using 2-3 per page with no words, readers can truly feel her emptiness. A quick flashback sequence breaks up the dark tones at a needed point. The images show Linnea at a place of comfort and calm before snapping back to reality.

The game-changer moment is granted a near full page. It presents the action on a grand stage. This ushers in the final moments. Galán does a great job setting the final image up. Readers won’t be ready for the full page panel concluding what has been a solid read from start to finish.
