This is arguably the most “Superhero”-esque issue to date. Seeing the League’s involvement plays well to finally give a pay-off for their involvement. V’s writing teases more string-pulling form one notable character. There is some deep diving which helps to truly cement his role here. That said, there are two major elements of this issue that jump out.

The first is the government involvement in this challenge. Readers watch as they difference of opinion strikes a few character wrong. This leads into one taking the full front lead. Who would have thought a human would be the voice of reason above gods? It results in an unlikely set-up for New Genesis refugees.

The second is a grieving portion for Lightray. V weaves the fabric of loss into the eqation perfectly. Readers watch as a guard is let down for huge emotions. There is little time to absorb the moment. The last page teases more problems circulating. How this will all play out is anyone’s guess.

Moore takes over the cameo section here. His art welcomes in the League into the conflict. Cagle steps in and gives a dramatic flare to the Gods arrival on earth. The smoky shadows of the JLU pop off the near full page. There is plenty of reactions at this stage. Seeing the set-up versus the government carries anger and resentment. It is quickly subdued by a hero’s actions. Cagle locks in on the frustration while spinning the positives.

The grieving section previously mentioned hits the mark. Seeing the one character finally break down at the loss is overdue. Each panel here conveys the shock of what has happened. Even as the mood is lowered here, a shot of kindness spins the chapter. The closing page leaves no doubt of more problems on the way. It’s never a dull moment with the art on display.

The New Gods have made their way to Earth, but at what cost? Ram V’s stellar writing fluctuates between a vast cast of characters. Moore and Cagle usher in the JLU’s appearance with strong art. Only time will tell where events lean into with a future uncertain.

Even with a brief skirmish, the overtones of something more dangerous can’t be denied.

The story shifts gears with a surprise guest star. Seeing Jack Ryder (and his alter ego) interject an unpredictability into the standard build. Events shift into a more traditional setting. Slott’s set-up showcases an insight into Superman’s “Golden era”. Readers watch as the new dynamic looks as a blessing in the conflict. The narrative quickly changes with a random action. From here, the dominos start falling around Supes. it leaves many questions moving forward. Judging by the closing page, time is not looking like it’s on his side.

Albuquerque & Maiolo opens up with the El Caldero unveiling. There’s a sense of nobility hovering around Castilho. The art carries him with that stance while Lane digs into the truth. That statement can be the motto for the rest of the book. In mere moments, the writing kicks into high gear with action. Johnson sets a fast pace as the showdown starts. Both sides take their best shots. The fight only breaks when a dark reveal comes to light. It is a huge payoff for something set in motion months ago. This leads into a dramatic close. Even when there’s an off chance to turn things around, Megatron stays two steps ahead. The chapter closes with a simple statement that couldn’t be more true. Readers will have much to say after this one.

Corona and Spicer give Magnus’ portion a sense of high tension to start. The pain in the eyes spoke of the despair haunting Earth. Elsewhere on Cybertron, the art mirrors the dwindling feeling of hope. Both arcs help towards bridging all parties to the closing battle. In the end, one series of events steals the show.

Some might think it’s just because batman doesn’t want to be wrong. This spirals into a subtle moment before launching into the end. It almost feels full circle with the dialogue. The scenes play into Todd’s rage heavily here. It results in a shocking turn to throw everything in flux. Where things go from here is wide open so brace for the journey.

Readers know it’s only a formality until Erica Slaughter arrives to investigate.

The dialogue with Jessica and Erica lends itself for a touch of comic relief. Seeing the young Erica having to cover tracks for Jessica proves a possible disconnect. It lends itself to ease back into the building drama. Tynion’s writing constructs a clear picture of what is unfolding. The closing pages re-enforce the dangers looming in the small town’s forest. It ends events on a striking finish while teasing an inevitable confrontation.

Dell’edera and Muerto welcomes readers into the quiet small town scenery. The panels reflect the snowy chill taking hold of the residents. Readers watch as the two clerks provide a pause for the rising drama. The facial reactions with the sheriff deliver on growing the threat lurking in the town. They also amplify when help arrives at their doorstep to help.

Seeing the crime at hand, there’s little argument to that statement.

Events take a turn when Batman gets help from his most trusted ally. Seeing Alfred get a major spot in the story helps connecting points. The writing ties in a past familiar group into this present moment. It results into a question of procedure. Adding this element in play showcases the relatively new hero naivety. It results in a gauntlet being thrown down in the close. Batman speaks his case. Judging by the last page, it may have fallen on deaf ears.

Sherman and Farrell continue to display fantastic art in this series. The opening page is a perfect start for the reflective monologue. Panel structure allows a broad view of Wayne’s assessment. It leads into a strong full page image of Wayne looking over the city.

The Rookery comes across as stated in the book: Hell on Earth. With the panel structures, the laundromat discovery hits hard. It will connect the points with the audience before the closing pages. Panel breakdown of stopping an attacker tells a story all its own. This moves to a glimpse of the daunting task at hand. Readers can’t help but be excited to see where things go from the last page.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY: PLAN B #1 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

It has been since 2019 since readers last saw The Umbrella Academy in “Hotel Oblivion”. Ironically, it was the same year of a new beginning for the group. Their hit Netflix series debuted to win over many in pop culture.

The last season of the show aired in 2024, but it’s not the end of the Academy just yet. There’s another story on the way concerning Sir Reginald Hargreeves’s children. This time, the focus is on another group of super-powered individuals who are taking the spotlight by force.

While the UA have been the darlings of the ball, it appears their other siblings are far from that.

The writing showcases the vicious streak in the other group. Whether in the past or present, Way never shies away from their true devious nature. Readers don’t have to wait long for some familiar friends to grace the pages. What will catch them off-guard is how they react when they encounter the others. It is everything one could ask for in a first encounter. This never slows as the story moves to close. The writing leaves a few loose ends open for the next chapter. It leaves readers in a more shocked place concerning the final action. This group is definitively not about reproach.

Bá and Stewart open events with a full page shot of a bank robbery. This is quickly followed up by a recap of how Hargreeves has manipulated the children he pretends to save. Readers see how the other group were virtually unknowns. This only fuels their young debut via a cursed two page flight image.

Their following half page panel brings their presence to the forefront. Under Hargreeves watchful eyes, they rapidly show how cold they are. Events give way to a present time showdown. The writing shows how he is handling a close friend’s disappearance. It is a brutal showcase of how Wayne barely holds his rage together. Snyder also quickly reveals a key player in the Bat-Universe. How said person will factor in will be fun to watch. It ‘s not the only new/old face appearing here. Once the mission becomes clear, there is no turning back on direction. The flashback moments solidify the hurt Wayne is feeling. This spirals into more reveals and a terrifying close. The interactions with his friends is case in point. An angry outburst drives home Wayne’s pain. Readers see how this pushes his investigation further. A full page image unveils a hidden secret of the new Absilute world. There’s little time to process it as the closing takes hold. The art is unforgiving in the action. This is drilled home in the final page. A full page image establishes true fear as an absolute statement is made for the future of Gotham.

A classic rogue’s absolute debut checks all the boxes on a magnificent chapter. Snyder unloads the true fear of Bane with the writing. Dragotta unleashes a furious look at the villain’s instant impact. No one in the Absolute Universe may be safe .

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #5 (MARVEL COMICS)

The Hobgoblin has returned with a vengeance! After poisoning Queen's Soda, The rhino nearly died of a heart attack. As Spidey investigated, he was also drugged himself. Dealing with as much daily grief as he does, Peter Parker nearly broken while high out of his mind.

Nowhere near healthy to fight, Spidey has to battle through his inner demons to stop Hobgoblin once and for all!

Kelly delivers a near-perfect ending for this story. Hobgoblin's return as been filled with intrigue. Seeing the classic rogue orchestrate his plan has been extremely fun to watch. What has been even better is a return to form for ol' web-Head. Outmatched physically and having no chance to win, Spidey still heads into action. The results remind everyone why Spidey connects with all readers on a different level.

The action goes into many directions. It reflects the off-balance nature of a drugged Spider-Man. Readers do get an answer to a supporting character and their loyalties. It plays well into the big conflict ending. The writing is as classic as it gets. THIS is what the benchmark should be in telling modern Spider-Man tales. Kelly also wraps up a hanging loose thread since issue one. In dealing with the flashbacks, there has been some friction between Peter and someone he cares about. Kelly's dialogue leave readers with a massive smile on their face when the dust settles. If this is any indication of where we are heading, all superhero fans need to jump on board now.

In a short amount of time, Larraz has thrown his hat in for best Spidey artist. Even if JRJR is returning for next arc, many fans (including yours truly) will be on watch for Larraz's return. The full image of Hobgoblin menacing Rand Industries sends an early message of what's to come. It's upended by a gorgeous two page splash of Spidey swinging in to make the save. From here on out, it's off to the races with big screen combat.

Pacing is flying as Spidey races against the clock to win. Panel structure compliments this movement. Readers watch as the action is flying furiously off the pages. Hobgoblin's menacing grin takes some moments but Spidey's relentless attack wins out. The unlikely turning point is capped off with a terrifying full page image. Save room for one more full image and the fight comes to a show-stopping end. The fallout leaves time to tie up loose ends. This is especially impactful for the final page. One image will take president over the rest. It will leave the audience with a long wait for the next sage to start.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

I have said it once and will say it more: SPIDER-MAN IS BACK, BAY-BAY! Kelly pens a chapter bursting with action and emotion. Larraz and the art time keep raising the bar with each page of art. This run has taken off and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

He’s accompanied by another classic DC World War hero. With the solid lead-in, the action starts hot and heavy. It’s everything you want in a big era fight. This segways into a more closed face-off between good and evil.

Having Wildcat and Hourman ruin Wotan’s plans is vintage JSA. Readers watch as both conflicts escalate quickly. The JSA’s battle takes a few turns. When Blitzkrieg’s side starts taking an advantage, the JSA doesn’t wait long for help. Another classic DCU team makes a bold entrance into the conflict. Readers will have much to cheer for within these pages. Conflicts resolve onto a pleasing manner. The calm doesn’t last long as the close begins. Once here, the dire situation of now takes hold. The audience will have many questions as the sinister plans of injustice look to take home victory. Vintage storytelling 101 within these pages.

Guidry steps in for art duties with this issue. The introduction of Rock and his partner are huge wins. The subtle panel ushers in the hero with quiet fanfare. This gives way to a huge full page action shot. Seeing the JSA take the fight t Blitzkrieg’s forces i sure to entertain.

A two page image bring Wotan and company into the spotlight. It is non stop action from this point. Readers watch as each side rallies for help. Both get near full page images. These are easily pivotal moments worthy of the big page time. Another full page image brings Dr. Fate into the conflict. The art fully encompasses this era when presenting it on page. Once in the closing pages, readers see the near full images spell out possible disaster. There is much for superhero fans to enjoy here.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The past adventures of the JSA get the knod for this current issue. Lemire masterfully weaves vintage storytelling into the past and present. Guidry and company craft a timeless feel to each page. With the team still reeling, how the JSA attempts to bounce back is up in the air.

SECRET SIX #4 (DC COMICS)

One would think that capturing Amanda Waller would unify some personalities. Someone never told Dreamer, Gossamer, Superman Jon Kent, Deadshot, Black Alice, & Catman. These six individuals are struggling not to kill each other, let alone find Waller.

After a lead takes them into the Club Checkmate, the six run into a “frienemy”. Former Secret Six member Banshee is now involved in Checkmate. She’s not happy to see her old running mates. Nothing bad should happen here, right?

SECRET SIX #4 by Nicole Maines, Cian Tormey, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands (DC COMICS) continues the search for an escaped Amanda Waller.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening now.

Maines wastes little time in bringing the action. Banshee has the volatile reunion with her former teammates. It does cause a few fractures in the group. Readers watch as some members are captures. Two in particular are not. this leads into the broken) heart of the chapter.

The long awaited back story between Catman and Deadshot comes to light. It gives a greater insight to the loyalty and love Catman has. Watching Deadshot play it off enhances Maines’ writing. It is clearly evident how well they work together as a team. This also plays into how devasting the turn Deadshot does in favor of Waller. There is no doubt of the hold Waller has on certain people Deadshot is no exception. The result is shocking but fitting. It also leads into a closing with more reveals. Just when you don’t think the situation can become more explosive, the final panel says it all.

Tormey joins Segovia and art duties for this chapter. The fight at the club proves chaotic as the Six are handled. When two escape the ruckus, they’re given a full page shot of their crash landing. It is easy to pick up on Catman’s growing rage. The close-ups of his face brew with anger as he recaps past events.

Segovia heads up the Madagascar portion. Catman’s raid of the compound is violent as needed. A half page image draws this out immediately. It’s complimented by Lawton’s smirking. The page set-up for Lawton’s betrayal is well done. It breaks up moments for building the shocking turn. Readers have little time to soak this all in. The final page has yet another big reveal to drop. A full page image reveals one more dangerous secret that can rip the group even further apart. How is this team ever going to find success at this rate?

OVERALL GRADE: 8.1

The truth behind a broken bond comes into the light with this chapter. Maines’ writing unveils Deadshot’s ultimate loyalty. The art brings a fair balance of action and drama to his issue. How the team responds to the last page reveal is literally anyone’s guess.

The focus shifts to Marshall and the Circle Guy News team. Readers watch as the humorous chat downplays the threats taking place. It’s the last calm moment before Marshall’s world gets rocked to its core.

Jaeger’s encounter is fitting for his villain status. There is a sense of uneasiness as the time displaced character gives his ultimatum. Considering his previous actions, one option seem off to a degree. There’s little time to ponder it before the action takes hold. Readers watch as Jaeger starts imposing his will. It leads into an explosive conclusion. Even as the dust settles, the writing teases a darker future on the horizon. Seeing a Massive-verse villain approach their agenda in this manner is refreshing. How the care-free hero responds to this will be fun to watch.

Ferigato and Costa kick off events with the fast paced raid on the dount shop. The panels reflect a frantic and unknown scene. It’s a very different vibe with Marshall and the CGN squad. Marshall’s reactions to their information varies. The moment gives pause before the events take a more serious turn.

Readers see Jaeger enter via a full page image. Marshall’s facial reaction speaks volumes. Seeing the villian’s proposal comes across with a mixed response. This leads to another Radiant to make their presence known. Pacing cranks up to a fever pitch. The fight escalates with a magnificent full page crash. This spins into another round of fighting. It concludes with a parting image with a haunting warning. If readers didn’t take the threat seriously, the closing page leaves a chilling reminder of what Jaeger is capable of.

Heavy is the crown for Marshall Ward. Higgins and Clark put the Massive-verse mainstay into the defensive with the writing. The art team shines with superb action panels that establish a new threat has arrived. There’s no better time to jump into the Massive-Verse than right now.

Parrott and Ridley bring events to a steady but satisfying ending. One area throughout this story has been Ray Palmer’s actions. At times, he teetered on becoming a full fledged villain. Opening this chapter, Palmer’s conversation with Mr. Terrific gives much needed insight. The writing walks readers through his motivations and shortcomings. It results into a well-placed switch to his allies larger problems.

Seeing the Legion banter amongst themselves provides a few timeless moments. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to see the Joker with Bat Wings? It also demonstrates how their obsession for power ultimately corrupts. Readers watch as it makes way for a valiant escape with surprises galore. Once the conflict concludes, the writing starts sewing up loose ends. Dialogue doesn’t shy away from the acceptance of failure. It brings events full circle, esp. involving Palmer. The fallout leaves the door open with a new perspective on the project. One can bank this story might be the catalyst for something greater down the road for the heroes of the DCU.

Perkins and Lucas hone in on the wear the project has taken on Palmer. The frustration and failure pours from his face. It leaves the reader with a sense of his guilt. There is no time to dwell here as The Legion of Doom crash the pages. The half page image starts a debate which opens the door for a last ditch attempt to fight back.

Action starts kicking into high speed during this break. As more of the Legion jumps in, the art throws a new look into place. A half page panel brings a huge twist to the fight. Readers watch as the fight speeds up. Luthor’s overconfidence shines on a smaller panel. It mirrors what the Legion has sensed in their recent stories. The overconfidence allows for an end to fighting. This leads into deep reflections of all parties involved. The art team caps off the last pages with solid image montages. Readers see a full image of a hero with redefined purpose closing this chapter on an optimistic note.

The Atom Project completes its assignment with a steady landing. From Ray Palmer’s reflections to Captain Atom’s acceptance, the writing covers much ground. Perkins and the art team deliver on great panels building towards an uncertain tomorrow. The ramifications from this series should stretch through the DCU for many stories to come.

With the new playing field, Aaron has re-introduced a classic villain superbly. The twisted version of an near-immortal shines with delight. Readers watch as the brutal fight with some Omega Men takes a vicious turn. It is unforgiving with the punishments and actions taken. Each word re-enforces the dark mantra taken towards the world. Knowing the opposition to this, the dialogue is only more fitting.

Once Superman makes the scene, he is given a bittersweet entrance. The writing reflects the sad changes to his childhood core. It spirals into his confrontation with Lazarus’ Lois Lane and Omega Man Jimmy Olsen. The dialogue keeps everyone at a healthy distance. Readers see this become the perfect opening for action. Aaron keeps up a fast pace as the conflict takes hold. There are quite a few curves thrown in. The closing pages wrap up events with an organic finish. It leaves readers in a place of tense waiting to see where things go from here. No better place to finish for now, but not for long.

Sandoval returns to art after a short hiatus. The opening battle is savage in its’ portrayal. A two page splash captures the intensity of the Lazarus boss unleashed. It concludes with a shocking series of panels. Readers will come away from this knowing the danger lying in wait.

Kal-El’s return home is met with a somber reunion. Knowing how things are different with the Kents, the art drills that home. This leads into the “Superman Trinity” meeting. Readers will be amped as they see Kal, Lois and Jimmy fend off the Peacemakers. Captain Smith’s return is graced via half page image. The showdown with Supes lives up to billing. Sandoval & Arreola throw in a monster change via half page. The art never slows down as fighting rages on. This pushes towards the closing pages. Only at the final stop does events wind down. The last panel says it all with the character’s eyes. There is uncertainty on where things go next which is a huge win.

Smallville becomes a warzone as Superman tries finding shelter from Lazarus’ raging storm. Aaron pens an action packed chapter with the writing. Sandoval returns to the art duties with magnificent images. The Man of Tomorrow continues to command the spotlight in an ever-imaginative new era.

Marvel Knights: The World To Come #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

A legacy renewed. A future uncertain.

Back in 1998, Marvel Comics pushed a bold new initiative onto readers. Led by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti,"Marvel Knights" took certain Marvel characters into the realm of mature readers content. The harder edge takes were a massive hit with readers.

Bringing Kevin Smith in (w/ Quesada & Palmiotti) for "Daredevil" brought many new eyes onto the imprint. Soon after, Punisher and The Inhumans joined the ranks. The original group was rounded out by a phenomenal take on Black Panther by Christopher Priest and Mark Texeria.

Fans gravitated for the fresh takes and one creator was given the keys to the house of ideas. Quesada was named Marvel Comics Editor-In-Chief in 2000.

Fast forward to present day and the Knights legacy still resonates with fans. Priest's run heavily influenced the MCU "Black Panther" films. The Inhumans success pushed them towards an MCU project. Punisher's MK run led to Garth Ennis taking the reins with Frank Castle's world. Daredevil's huge wins lead Matt Murdock into a comic renaissance.

It comes as no surprise when Marvel announced that Quesada and Priest were returning to the imprint, fans were elated. Now it's time to see where they take the King of Wakanda in an all new adventure.

When you see Priest's name in the credits, you KNOW its gonna be a fantastic story. T'Challa passing away in the opening pages throws down a huge gauntlet. The fallout is immense. Readers watch as the Dora Milaje make their presence felt. A simple return mission spirals into a deeper glimpse of the fallen King. Priest walks a fine line with time jumps. As readers backtrack on key times, the sense of greater impact never escapes the pages.

Dabbling into his romance with Storm, T'Challa's reflection of its end packs a heavy punch. The dialogue here guides the King on an unlikely yet needed path. The rules of royalty take greater shape in these pages. Some may question the takes but Priest's set-up nails each point. Readers also see a side of T'Challa that pushes this story. The writing highlights his flawed character. There are multiple examples of his perfect imperfections. None might be greater than the closing act. During these pages, tough choices are needed. The results lead into a monster cliffhanger that is sure to raise some questions. Get settled in for what shall be a saga of epic proportions.

With the art in the hands of a skilled storyteller, expectations were high. There was no letdown once events took off. The opening image of a dying T'Challa strikes an early chord. This moves events along to the Dora Milaje. Readers see their entrance come off as imposing. It sets the stage for discovering a lost friend of Wakanda. His broken mannerisms tell quite the story. It leaves readers in charge if he is delusional or defiant in the face of authority.

There's plenty of action sprinkled throughout this issue. Right from the full page start to the closing pages, the art rarely lets up. A full page image of T'Challa and Storm steals the scene as a transition begins. The panels fill with emotion as the king feels the weight of events. This carries over to another unlikely chapter in his life. Readers see how the full picture comes into view. The ending takes the intensity up a few levels. It doesn't prepare readers for the final image. A full page send-off brings the house down as the story is ready to explode. Phenomenal work as to be expected here.

The King is Dead. Long Live the Legacy. Priest's writing builds up the complex duties of a fractured King. Quesada's art takes the emotions to greater heights. Combining these elements proves for a winning combination. If readers need to know why Marvel Knights was so impactful, they only need this issue for a small glimpse. This delivers on high levels of storytelling few others reach.

The search for the safe haven provides a break from the heavier drama. Charlie’s friendship with Jo steals the page time before the evil emerges. Readers watch as Ren and Charon make a deadly re-emergence into the saga. Their cut-throat tactics send the story into a darker voyage. A vicious test offers a larger reward if successful. This throws everything into a high gear towards the close. After a frantic scene, the fallout teases the unimaginable. Readers watch as the chapter closes with many questions in the air. Rest assured, there is no shortage of excitement building here.

Favoccia & Cogar open with a flashback sequence to a happier time. Charlie’s friendship with Daya shines in comparison to her father. The cold stance is written on Charlie’s face. Their best moves to evade come to life with a full page shot. This all leads into the closing pages. A two page splash offers a glimpse at the impossible. It’s quickly countered with a parting panel full of mystery. The art never misses its’ mark in this series.

The world of the Shroud returns with a fantastic opening chapter. The Synders unveil a deeper side of Charlie while ramping up the stakes. Favoccia & Cogar construct magnificent imagery as the ever-evolving world takes another dramatic turn. There’s no telling where this journey is heading so don’t miss your chance to jump on board!

BATMAN #160 by Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair and Richard Starkings (DC COMICS)

As much as I’m hoping this story turns a corner, it still feels as it’s going in reverse. The partnership between Todd and Elloit seems very forced. If based on saving Todd’s life, the dialogue isn’t nailing that point. Seeing Batman deduct what is truly happening, the sotry feels more geared for bait and switch than anything.

There are some small bright spots. Armori and Silence both have solid action moments. Each are presented in a manner where it feels organic. Readers can get behind how these two have come to be. It is a good twist put into place. However, that’s where the good times sadly end. The Nightwing portion feels dislodged. Grayson’s run-in with Todd leaves readers wanting more. That is not the even most awkward moment of this issue. The close provides a cameo where Batman’s inner thought reflects the readers. Even the parting shot doesn’t have the shock factor the moment desperately needs.

Lee and Williams art is the only thing holding this issue upright. The two-page splash of Todd and Hush is impressive. It carries a certain edge to try building up. Batman makes his grand appearance via full page image. This sets up the flashback sequences nicely.

The other Bat-family members get a fair amount of page time. Riddler’s new look is very distinct. It helps to push Nightwing into the inevitable confrontation with Todd. The fight sequence with Armori and Silence are excellent. Readers watch as a two page spalsh welcomes in a few guests for the fight’s conclusion. Lee knows how to pull these pages off with finesse. The final page is a solid tease of the deadly cat-and-mouse game. If the lead-in was stronger, this would have more impact to leave on.

OVERALL GRADE: 6

Too many issues with Hush’s overall scheme hamper what should be a turning point in the saga. The writing feels as its’ missing key details to establish more with readers. Lee’s art continues to be the saving grace in this chapter. Unfortunately, its’ not enough to overcome the roadblocks set in place.

Evil is on the cusp of victory. Gorilla Grodd’s Legion of Doom has done the unthinkable. They have time displaced the Justice League! With no heroes in their way, the path to absolute control is in sight. It will take a miracle for the League to defeat them. Who will answer the call in time?

Let’s take a closer look at how events play out now.

Waid sets the stage for power to corrupt all in this chapter. Grodd’s grand scheme is poised to succeed. The opening page serves as a “new readers” guide to recapping events. Seeing how easily the League is handled sends a shock to readers. Grodd’s narration is delivered with a calm chill. It helps cement the gravity of the fight. Even when there’s glimpses of hope, they are dashed quickly. This leads to a predictable yet justified turn of events.

No matter what wins this Legion has accomplished, the goal never changed. Grodd’s quest for power takes readers into an intriguing proposal. It doesn’t take long for the egos in this unit to finally become too big. The fallout allows for a well-timed distraction. This gives an unlikely hero a chance to mount a comeback. Pacing pushes all parties into a direct line of fire. What comes out in the end is a face-off that complicates matters even further. This isn’t a bad thing by any means. Waid has key players in place for what should be an epic conclusion of the crossover.

Moore and Bonvillain welcome readers i with a chaotic first page. It’s a classic superhero fight that conveys the desperate situation at hand. Even as the Elongated Man tried mounting a last ditch effort, the panels show how futile it is. Seeing how the heroes have been displaced strikes a chord. Readers can sense time is fading fast. There’s never a moment in this sequence that says otherwise.

Once the attention is thrown back on a victorious Legion, the art shows cracks forming. Grodd reveals his true intentions with a near full page. In the background, readers see one member mirroring the others thoughts. This leads into a breakdown of great proportions. All the while, one hero re-enters the conflict. The full page image shows how they might be the key to turning tables. Pacing picks up and shows the back and forth taking place. It leads to a show-stopping final page. There’s no way readers leave the full page shot not amped up for the finale.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

An unlikely source provides a much needed spark as “We Are Yesterday” winds down. Waid conducts a very strong build for the finale. Moore and Bonvillian unveil the unstable personalities vying for control. It all leads to a final stand that is sure to be one for the ages and beyond.
