For this entry, we are catching up with the fallout from a fandom’s explosive return to the comic shops. Picking up right where they left off, the global special forces unit has their hands full with Cobra. The terrorist group struck fast and personal with their return salvo. Plus, there’s another element at play that no one is seeing coming.

Cobra Island is no more. All that is left is a toxic wasteland. This is all in part to Dr. Mindbender’s Mutant Virus Bomb being activated by Serpentor Khan. Anyone caught in the blast has been mutated. When the “survivors” become unruly, Khan makes an example out of one of them. Khan shoots off the head of a mutant, leaving their body for scrapes. Khan proclaims the survivors are going to leave the island and take over Cobra’s home turf of Springfield.

Meanwhile, at Arlington National Cemetery, service are being held for Wade Collins. Collins was killed by Cobra Commander in his escape from Cobra Island. Collins death affects many but arguably none more than Snake-Eyes.

All the while, Cobra Commander addresses the people of Springfield. His message doesn’t go over well with family members asking about their loved ones. Commander pushes the mission statement forward that Cobra will be ready to handle Serpentor’s invasion no matter the cost.

With a looming war brewing, who is waiting in the wings watching? Readers see quickly that there’s more than one invested party watching events unfold. This all falls behind the emotions left in Collins’ death. The final moments of the chapter ties up its’ impact before leaving readers with a visual reflecting the loss.

Hama builds up the Cobra civil war behind the emotional impact of a fallen Joe. Collins’ burial at Arlington delivered on a strong emotional connection with readers. The impact is felt later when Stalker breaks down Collins’ story to other Joes. The flashbacks walk new reader through his story, showcasing how devastating of a loss this is to members of the team.

Cobra’s brewing civil meltdown fuels the other portions of the book. Hama displays Serpentor as insane and blindly thinking his plans will work. Meanwhile, Cobra Commander knows what is coming and his address to the citizens of Springfield mirrors the same message. Overall, the chapter starts building up a foundation for a much bigger fight waiting to happen. This is nothing but a huge win for readers.

Mooneyham and Segala display the grief and sadness of Collins’ death with their visuals at Arlington. The mood is somber and the feeling of deep loss never leaves the panels. Later in the issue, the art makes the flashback panels pop out to show readers on how deep the loss is with Stalker.

The moments with Serpentor spotlights the devastation of the mutant virus bomb. The art depicts the victims as horribly disfigured and Serpentor’s madness relishes in the moment. Cobra Commander’s reactions are hidden behind the mask but his body language conveys the plan to defend Springfield no matter the sacrifice. Another great issue with the artwork for fans to enjoy.

The fallout from a death looms on the hearts and minds of G.I. Joe with action building in the horizon. Stellar writing and visuals welcome back a new phase for the never-ending conflict between G.I. Joe and Cobra. The new series is off to a strong start and here’s no way you should be missing this on New Comic Book Day!

JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. GODZILLA VS. KONG #3 (DC COMICS/Legendary comics)

For this entry, we’re diving back into one of the biggest pop culture crossovers in history. Combining two of Hollywood’s historic monsters is big enough, but adding in DC Comics’ legendary franchise takes it to a whole other level. Within a few issues, the series has delivered on big action and shows no signs of slowing down!

When Godzilla invades Metropolis, this moves draws the attention of the Man of Steel himself, Superman. Little did he or the rest of the DCU know that the King of All Monsters would become the catalyst for an invasion of the Monsterverse into the DC Universe. It also doesn’t help matters that looming in the wings are the Legion of Doom. However, they have shifted their attention to one of its’ members who’s gone rogue.

The first round has gone the way of the monsters in the initial encounter. Superman appears to have fallen in battle with Godzilla. With the rest of the DC Heroes trying to stop other monsters form destroying cities, is there anyone who can stop Godzilla now?

This issue starts in Central City. The Fastest Man Alive, The Flash (Barry Allen) is running into danger. The destination is Iron Heights Prison. What’s waiting for him is MUTO, a classic cthulhu-hybrid monster. Flash heads into the prison to stop a riot from the inmates. As a fog looms overhead, Flash slows down. This allows the meta-prisoners to get the upper hand on the hero.

Luckily, back-up arrives quickly as Supergirl and Green Lantern crash the party. With the mist dealt with, the focus shifts back to stopping MUTO. Plans are derailed for Supergirl as she notices she can’t hear Superman’s heart beat. Knowing something is wrong, she races back to Metropolis.

Readers bare witness to a bloodied and defeated Superman in the street. With other heroes trying to slow down the monster, one takes blame for the fallen Man of Tomorrow. SHAZAM powers up to take down Godzilla once and for all.

How does The World’s Mightiest Mortal contend? The answer doesn’t wait long to appear. The action moves fast as events spiral out of the heroes control. Can they find a way to get their “home field advantage” back? If the final moments are any indication, things might be going from bad to even worse!

Buccellato spares no expense on delivering a non-stop thrill ride with this latest installment. Right from the beginning, the Flash conflict spotlights another DC Hero struggling to believe what they’re dealing with. Buccellato doesn’t spend too much time dwelling on the wonder and kicks right into the heart of the conflict and ultimate resolution.

The shift to Metroplois makes perfect sense as DC’s most powerful hero is defeated. The sense of panic fills those panels until ultimately Shazam enters the fray. Juggling so many characters, Buccellato never forces or cuts short time in the chapter. Each major player gets their moment to tell their part. Pacing helps build up the closing act as a dangerous entity looks to have become even more dealy. There’s such a big “Hollywood” feel to this story that continues to impress.

The art gives each monster a dramatic entrance while building up their moments on page. Duce and Guerrero mix in near full page panels to emphasize this aspect. The moments with Godzilla really capture readers’ attention. From a near full page action shot to a fantastic two page spread, the fight rages on to an easy fan approval. The emotions run high as well concerning the fate of Superman.

Duce and Guerrero balance out the surge of fear and denial concerning the fallen ally with the frantic setting of the story. The latter half of the issue shines as a major player appears to be ready to impact the main plot. The issue is capped off with a strong final image tipping its hand at how bad things are going to become. Another great visual read!

The mayhem continues as the omnsters run wild in the DCU. Buccellato weaves in big action with emotions running high as hope takes a huge hit. The art team construct visuals that give this story the proper larger than life feel it deserves. If you’re not picking this up on New Comic Book Day, you’re really missing out!

SPIDER-GWEN: SMASH #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the adventures of one of the Spider-verse’s most popular characters. Since impacting pop culture audiences in the smash Spider-Man Spider-verse animated films, Gwen Stacy from Earth-65 has become one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes. Now poised to take the lead in an all-new adventure, fans have much to be excited about.

On Earth 65, people are running out of “Freak Out”, an establishment that is hosting a certain band for the night. The group? The Mary-Janes! As Em Jay tries calming the crowd, the cause for the disruption appears to be Spider-Gwen aka Ghost-Spider!

Readers see a quick flashback to moments prior. While playing drums on stage, Gwen Stacy notices an approaching threat coming near the stage. Pink Velvet is making her way through the crowd. She’s addressing her social followers and touting about her super-villainy. Gwen’s sensing danger as she gets close to Em Jay.

Before she can strike, Pink Velvet is taken down by Ghost-Spider! However, the fallout works in Velvet’s favor. Being an “influencer”, Velvet speaks as she was the victim and paints the picture this is all Gwen’s fault. After a heart to heart with her dad, Gwen is called away to meet with the band.

Once she arrives, Gwen sees an offer of a lifetime. The Mary Janes have been asked to open for DAZZLER and the UNCUT GEMS for their tour!

Readers see how an offer of a lifetime has much more than meets the eye behind it. What could be the meaning behind their addition to the tour? The story cranks up the volume as Gwen and company get their information. They also get a party crasher fans won’t see coming. While still processing this, fans are left with a solid last song (or in this case image) until the next tour date.

Flores unveils a very fun and engaging story for readers right from the opening pages. Gwen is presented as an unlucky soul searching for something. The life of Ghost-Spider isn’t perfect and the clashes with Em Jay work to slowly build the drama. The moments with her father are brief but reinforce the drive to find her happiness through her musical responsibilities.

The story begins to take things up a few levels once Dazzler and her associates appear. Flores puts a few great twists on some classic characters, giving readers a fresh perspective. One in particular will catch some off guard, but that plays into the enjoyable aspect of what is being presented here. This all leads into the final act where more layers of the tale begin to peel back and show there’s more to the latest saga than just rock and roll.

Balam, D’Amico and Sifuentes keep things energetic as the music begins to play. Readers don’t have to wait too long to see Gwen in action. The scuffle with Pink Velvet is brief but gives readers a few noteworthy panels featuring Gwen in action. The moments with her dad rewind the tension and allow Gwen to have some character moments. This caps off with a fun train sequence meeting up with The Mary Janes.

The introduction of Dazzler and company makes an impression with a near full page panel. The art spotlights the mutant rockstar with some noteworthy concert visuals before ramping up the drama into the latter half of the book. The reimagined characters are featured well into the overall picture. Their spotlight is stolen by the antagonist, who leaves readers with great action sequences. This all leads to an excellent closing page before bowing out until next time.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #4 (DC COMICS)

Now, things escalate to a fever pitch as the case looks like it’s about to break wide open!

With most of the Bat Family exiled away after the events of “The Gotham War,” Bruce Wayne has taken his fight against crime to a new location. No longer at Wayne Manor, Batman has set up shop inside a brownstone. With his back-up personality still lingering after the effects of “Knight Terrors”, the Dark Knight continues his quest for Justice. Along for the ride is his teenaged son, Damien. Their relationship has been strained over the past few months. Their latest case might be the catalyst to heal their wounds.

While investigating an attempted kidnapping on Dr. Kafira, Batman was attacked by Bats! The alleged culprit behind the attack was Shush. Readers quickly foud out that she wasn’t the main boss. That honor belongs to an old friend: Kirk Langstrom aka MAN-BAT!

This issue begins with a flashback to Damian’s training with the League of Assassins. His trainer, Mistress Harsh, pushed his skill to the limit with an unorthodox test. When she deems he failed, Harsh hits Damian. Unknown to her, Talia Al Ghoul walks in and doesn’t appear to be happy. The outcome is one readers will have an inkling of happing but to what extend?

As the story jumps to the present, Man-Bat is addressing a defiant and restrained Robin. With Shush in the room , Damian holds his own with the banter with the bad guys. It’s enough to almost give Batman an easy route for the heroics. Man-Bat senses him and says to join the party. Batman obliges and onward goes the excitement.

How does the encounter go with Man-Bat? From this stage, the drama picks up as the duo now knows who their opposition truly is. The fallout delivers on giving some key notes as to how the father and son deal with the knowledge. This all rises right into the few ending pages. Once readers get to the end, there’s one bit of news that should generate some buzz heading into the next chapter. It’s another great piece of the winning formula of this series.

Williamson gives readers a strong payoff to the latest caper without doing a full reveal. The metamorphosis of Langston works to further the drama along. It also adds a new layer to the storied history of the enemies. Speaking of storied history, the strength of this series has been the bond between Father and Son.

Williamson’s writing spotlights Bruce and Damien's road back from estrangement. The flashback sequences show Damien’s past in a darker place in comparison to where he is now. The stark difference is seen in a few moments where the pair happily bond in their pursuit of the case. The ending moments solidify their bond while leaving readers with a great closing footnote until next issue.

The art duties are spilt this issue between Di Meo and Janin. With Damian’s initial flashback sequence, Janin sets up Damian’s brashness with solid action behind it. Batman gets his fair share with a near full page panel that shifts gears in the story direction. Janin also delivers an epic two page image of the Dynamic Duo in happier times that is sure to please fans.

Di Meo comes crashing in with his own two-page full splash page bringing Batman crashing into the story. The imagery is fast placed. This gives this Bat book a certain feel to it that drives the building drama with each page. This issue has a great 1-2 punch with the art leading into a great closing panel to cap events off with. It’s always a highlight reading this series.

The latest case for Bruce and Damian Wayne closes in one aspect but opens a surprise one with this latest issue. Williamson’s strong writing balances the family and crime-fighting while the dual art threat of Di Meo and Janin gives readers a wonderful trip through the vivid imagery. Make sure you have this series on your pull lists at the local comic shop!

TITANS: BEAST WORLD #2 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter in DC Comics’ huge crossover event: BEAST WORLD. With the Tians stepping into the role of the premier superhero team, they have been tested like never before. What happens when one of their own becomes the problem behind a global catastrophe? Nightwing and company are finding out first hand.

TITANS: BEAST WORLD #2 by Tom Taylor, Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, Brad Anderson, and Wes Abbott continues the chaos as the heroes scramble to stop it. Let’s take a closer look and see how things are going now.

When the Necrostar is released from its’ planet prison via Brother Eternity, the Titans lead the charge to stop the oncoming threat. Beast Boy takes a huge gamble and makes himself into the one being that might be capable of stopping the threat. He turns himself into a Starro.

After the space altercation, an unforeseen presence makes their move. Amanda Waller has sent Doctor Hate to intervene. Beast Boy is now infected and attacking the earth with spore-like creature. The people of Earth are transforming into beast of their own.

The story picks up with Cyborg and Raven floating in space. Both are reeling from the initial encounter of the Necrostar. As they start gathering their surroundings, they see a number of the DC Universe’s most powerful heroes trying to stop Beast Boy’s attack.

Meanwhile back on Earth, ANIMAL MAN is being overwhelmed by the surge of animal-humans taking over. In Bludhaven, Nightwing and Batman are doing all they can to help the innocent survive the ordeal. When a young boy becomes trapped in a car, Batman flies in for the save. During the rescue, Batman is wounded via a bite that nearly rips his arm off.

Nightwing swoops in for help but the next moments switch everything on its’ axis. What transpires pushes Dick Grayson to his limits. In the process, he (along with readers) find more clues about the spread of the animal infection. Will it be enough to turn the tide or will another force factor in to delay their cause? If the final image is any indication, the battle has only just begun for the heroes of the DC Universe.

Taylor keep things centered around the face of the Titans for this chapter. The struggle Nightwing shows to the conflict shows many sides. Not only is the world around him becoming unglued, but he is forced to confront a threat he never wants to face. The moments before that fight occurs, Taylor shows Grayson’s fears pouring out as he knows what is coming. The emotional gut-punches with Batman and Nightwing play into how readers can sense the conflict is weighing on them.

The other main characters of the story gets their times to shine. None Moreso than the main culprit behind the escalation of events. With a power struggle looming behind the scenes of a global crisis, Taylor paces each level out to keep a fair balance of drama and action.

Reis, Miki, Anderson and Abbott bring stunning visuals to this issue. The full page image of the DCU heroes fighting Gar-Starro makes an immediate statement. The more low-key moments center around Batman and Nightwing. The reaction Batman gives the young boy after a question is asked shows a different side to the Dark Knight.

This leads into some fantastic action, building towards a monstrous full page image that amplifies events. Mixed with other heroes emotions, the closing panels cap off the feeling that the tide might start turning or be lost forever. There is much to enjoy with the art displayed here.

NICE JEWISH BOYS #2 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

For this entry, we are following along the interesting times of Jake Levin via Comixology Originals. What started out as a job opportunity for a struggling writer has evolved into something else. Now deeper into the mess he’s apart of, Jake needs to act fast before sinking further int danger.

Jake Levin thought his long-time friend Chaim Davidovits, was helping him out when Chaim offered him a job writing promotions for his kosher appetizing stores. However, as the saying goes, if its too good to be true, it is.

One night, Jake went back to the office for his cell phone. When he walked in, he became an accessory to murder! At this moment, Jake became entangled in Chaim’s organized crime business. Making matters worse is Lenny Klein. Klein is another childhood friend who now is working with the FBI to take down the business at Chaim’s shops. Where does Jake go from here?

This issue begins with Shloime Garbstein, Chaim’s mashgiach (one who oversees the Kashruth condition of food in a restaurant), and associates going through stolen property and money laundered. Jake is shown as going through the books and making sure the “Avodah” (work). Readers see how this isn’t something that jak had even planned to happen. They also start seeing the slow seduction of wealth beginning in Jake.

This is a far cry from a previous chat with Jake and Lenny. Lenny lays out his plan to go after Netanel Stern (business associate of Chaim). With Jake’s head spinning, readers see how further divided he has become with his childhood friends.

How does he react when he sees Chaim after this? The next sop at the shop leads Jake into an assignment he might not be ready for. With tension filling the air, will Jake rise to the occasion or get crushed by its’ weight? Readers quickly see how Jake adapts to the world he’s now in but is he ready for what’s next? If the final page is any indication, Jake’s world just got even more complicated…

Kleid continues to put Jake through the rising challenges of his new world. Being an unlikely “gangster”, Kleid showcases Jake’s awkwardness to his fellow “teammates”.

Blending in the fear and anxiousness forces Jake into near breakdowns. Once he understands the assignment, Jake shifts gears into leaning a certain direction as Chaim plays more as a “devil on his shoulder” with what the life of crime can offer. The closing moments adds a huge factor into Jake’s life. It also adds a deeper cut into Jake’s life as he tries to stop his world from spinning further out of control.

Broglia and Wright teeter Jake’s reactions from surprise wonderment to growing anxiousness. This begins right after the full page panel of Shloime addressing not only his crew, but the audience with “I Believe In God”. After that moment, Jake tries fighting the appeal of his new stat-quo.

Once the assignment is completed, Jake and Chaim’s conversation proves to be reflective of the uncertainty of their business. This leads to a solid parting image further complicating things for the lead who’s in way over his head already.

For this entry, we are descending further into the fractured mind of DC Comics’ Dark Knight. Since his awakening from the events of “Knight Terrors”, Bruce Wayne hasn’t been himself. With his defense personality in control, BATMAN has become more dangerous. Now poised to face his greatest foe, can Bruce not only defeat the Clown Prince of Crime, but his own mind as well?

Zur-En-Arrh, the back-up personality of Bruce Wayne has taken over after the events of “Knight Terrors”. After causing damage with the rest of the Bat-Family, this version of Batman is flying solo. While investigating a murder of a toy company heir, Batman knows who the clues are pointing to: JOKER!

The investigation leads to a trap. Joker has attacked Batman on another personal level. Lucie Chesson, who trained Bruce on his way to becoming the Bat, is a pawn in Joker’s twisted game. However this time around, he’s not dealing with the same ol’ Bat. He’s dealing with Zur-En-Arrh, who sends Bruce back into his own mind. Once in his own mental prison, Batman is confronted by an army of Zur-En-Arrhs.

This issue kicks off with Joker elated to deal with Zur-En-Arrh. Their game of cat and Mouse is about to start. Meanwhile Batman is addressing the other personalities. They claim to be the multi-verse versions. At this stage, readers quickly see any chance for these conflicts ending peaceful being non-existant.

Both fights begin with no remorse shown in either. “Zur-Bat” is unrelenting on the violence he is dishing out on Joker. It is one of the most brutal displays that Batman has ever unleashed on any criminal. The same can be said for the battle inside Bruce’s mind. Overwhelmed by the odds, it appears Bruce Wayne is on borrowed time as a new Batman has outsmarted the world’ greatest detective.

Readers see how both fights pay out with two sides of the Bat fighting for control. With all the surrounding elements at play, there is no easy road to victory. The action intensifies with each panel. This all builds to a breaking point. Once that resolution starts unraveling, the closing moments prove that “Mind Bomb” is an appropriate title for this story. Expect to be blown away by the final image!

Zdarsky challenges the Caped Crusader on two fronts for this issue. The first is dealing with his own creations. The personalities of Zur-En-Arrh provides a distinct threat of what Batman can become. Seeing Bruce face them head on shows his own struggle to not lose control. Readers see what happens when he does as the battle with the Joker is brutal and unapologetic.

The writing reflects the blind obsession to serve justice. As Zur-En-Arrh deomstrates, there is a fine line from heroics and villainy. The pacing moves quickly to give both plot points ample time to hit with readers. Once the latter half of the book starts to take hold, Zdarsky throws in some amazing curves before ending on another solid cliffhanger. The uncertainty of where things are heading makes this a great Joker story. It’s also a huge win for the fans who see Batman’s greatest challenge being himself.

Jiménez and Morey bring the ferociousness of the violence out in each brutal panel of fighting. The opening salvo versus the Joker holds nothing back as Batman starts throwing punches. With each strike, readers can feel the remorseless anger behind the fists. These images only amplify louder as their fight escalates. It leads to a show-stopping moment which will leave reader speechless.

As for the mind battle, the many “cameos” are a great nod to the many versions of Batman. The “leader” of the personalities was a perfect choice. It led to more importance on when their final fight occurred. There was never a shortage on the intensity as each panel brought out the high stakes involved with the conflict. The mind resolution stands out for a subtle yet stand-out moment. This leads into the final moments which will leave readers with jaws dropped at the final full-page panel. Jiménez illustrated one hell of an issue within these pages.

The explosive mid-way point of “Mind Bomb” will absolutely blow readers away. Zdarsky exemplifies the power of the mind through his excellent writing. Jiménez and Morey leave nothing on the table as their superb imagery brings the violent rage of a vigilante up close and personal before throwing another dynamic in the mix on the parting image. This story is an absolute must-read.

When Sin (Black Canary’s “sister”) is taken by the Amazons to the Island of Themyscira, this isn’t going to sit well with Dinah Lance! Black Canary brings back the Birds of Prey with Zealot, Big Bartha, Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) and Harley Quinn. Their mission: rescue Sin and leave undetected. Sounds easy enough, right? Wrong.

While trying to leave, Wonder Woman gets wind of the disturbance on the Island. Even with Green Arrow trying to buy time, it’s not enough. The Birds are ready to fly but now stand face to face with one of DC’s most powerful beings: Dinah Prince aka Wonder Woman!

This issue kicks off with the few moments before Wonder Woman arrives. As the team plans, Zealot interrupts them and says she has arrived. Zealot tries buying time but after a short skirmish, Dinah leaves her to the Amazons to continuing to pursuit.

The issue takes off from here as its’ a HUGE fight between the Birds and Wonder Woman. Who is left standing when the smoke clears? Readers see how things play out as the fate of the world hangs in the balance. As events move forward, Dinah and her team will be challenged like never before. Will they handle it or break under pressure? If the final page is any indication, don’t expect the Birds to go quietly into that gentle night!

Thompson delivers a knockout combo on the writing for this issue. As previously stated, Zealot is quickly becoming the break-out character of this series. The interaction between her and Wonder Woman is a solid point of this story.

Another element of this story is the banter between Harley and the team. Seeing how her conversations are reflecting on Dinah Lance is a great break in all the action. Pacing does a great presentation to where all the action is without missing the drama. The final act sets up for a huge showdown while raising the tension and importance of their mission tenfold.

Romero and Bellaire don’t pause before igniting the action powder keg within these pages. There is an excellent two page full spread of the Birds fighting the Amazons. This shows why this team was put together by Dinah in issue #1. The fighting panels with Wonder Woman pop right off the pages. Cowles’ lettering adds the final touches on making this images feel THAT much bigger to the overall story.

In between the action, the art team captures and highlights the banter between the team. Seeing Dinah start to come around to Harley is a great piece to the overall picture. The lead-in to the big showdown adds a great layer to the story. The closing act instantly connects with readers the danger that is now involved on the mission. This caps off with a strong final page, and great final panel to send readers onward.

If you’re looking for non-stop action, this issue is going to be YOUR book! Thompson architects the big action with great writing. Romero, Bellaire and Cowles present stunning visual after stunning visual to showcase the magnitude of the battles. This series continues to impress and you won’t want to miss this on New Comic Book Day.

For this entry, DC Comics is giving readers one hell of a holiday treat. Gotham City can very very unfriendly to outsiders. The story begins with a group of Carolers singing in downtown Gotham. Flying overhead is a mysterious group of creatures that appear to have bat wings. As the group presses onward to sing in the cold, their performance is cut short. The creatures attack the singing group and leave no survivors.

Arriving on the scene to investigate is the Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin. During their exam, Batman notices a neck puncture that appears to have drained their blood. Knowing this seems out of the ordinary, Batman calls in some help. Walking thru a portal is the Mistress of Magic herself: Zatanna!

After using a spell, she deciphers that creatures known as the Draug are at fault. Zatanna mentions that the Draug are of Norse Vampire decent. As she is breaking down her findings, one such creature attacks! While it’s in the air, the creature is impaled by a wooden stake. The person behind the weapon? None other than SANTA CLAUS!

Readers quickly find out that this is not the same jolly ol’ Saint Nick that they usually think of. What is his connection to the case? More importantly, what is his connection to Batman?!

As the story progresses, the unlikely team-up dives further into what is behind the Draug being unleashed. Readers get an early holiday gift with fast-paced action and memorable conversations between Santa and some of Gotham’s finest. This all leads into a final page where it appears someone has Santa on their naughty list and plans on delivering pain and suffering as a gift next issue!

Readers get an early gift via the most unlikely of team-ups. The issue moves briskly to hit its’ major points. Parker mixes in well timed one-liners with a more serious narrative. A good majority of this comes from Damien Wayne’s dialogue. Seeing Batman a bit more at ease and less brooding was a nice change as well. The story still had a dramatic feel to it, but one that also embraced the fun aspect and ran with it. This will be a version of Santa Klaus that won’t soon be forgotten.

Each time Santa makes an entrance, Parker sets it up to connect with the audience as a major plot point. Heading into the closing moments, Parker unveils much the background story that flows easily into the present. It caps off with a strong final image that is sure to have fans excited to see where things head next.

Bandini, Sinclair and Brosseau don’t delay about setting the tone for this debut issue. The two-page spread of the Draug’s first strike establishes the dangers lying ahead. This is followed up by full (or near full) page debuts for all the major DCU heroes at play.

Doing introductions like this to readers gives more weight to the impactful appearances. The issue is filled with great action images. This plays off the fun dialogue extremely well. The art team builds up the closing images with a dramatic flair to cap off a fun ride that is a fantastic present for readers.

Erica Slaughter’s current investigation has led her to Tribulation, New Mexico. When a monster known as the Duplicitype (who now has taken the form of Erica) violently murders a family, a lone survivor named Gabi is on borrowed time.

Gabi is now under the custody of Riqui, a bartender doing all she can to help her. Even with Sheriff Carter’s involvement, the danger hasn’t left Tribulation. It’s only grown more terrifying. This is all because of an insane force of nature: Charlotte Cutter.

Cutter has been hired by the Order of St. George to eliminate Erica as she is considered a loose end to business. Knowing that re-emerging would put her life in danger, Erica took the chance to help Gabi anyway. Unfortunately, death and destruction has been left in Evil’s wake.

Erica, Riqui and Gabi make a final stand to draw out the Duplicitype but Cutter has crashed the party. Once Gabi is captured by Cutter, Erica makes a tough call to shoot the poisoned arrow meant for the monster at Cutter. Unfortunately, Cutter grabs it in mid air and stabs Gabi with the poison!

This issue wastes no time as Erica makes a direct line to attack Cutter. Gabi is screaming in pain as the poison starts taking hold. Riqui is helpless to stop it. Their words provide the soundtrack for an all-out violent throwdown between Erica and Cutter.

Nothing is held back as the two fight to the death. Readers get their money’s worth and then some as the rivals deliver on the emotional tension that’s been building. All the while, the monster is still walking towards their location.

The drama never stops escalating as the chaos swirls around Erica like a hurricane. Once the smoke clears, the resolution leaves scars that won’t fade away for Erica and the readers. Get ready for an intense payoff as one chapter closes but another one prepares to begin within these epic pages.

Being the champion of Slow-Burn drama, Tynion delivers a highly emotional conclusion to this arc. Erica’s struggle to find a win has been a major driver for this arc. Cutter has been one step ahead of her at every phase. With their final confrontation here, Tynion unleashes Cutter at her most deadliest. With stabbing words while hurting Erica, the dialogue uses words as weapons. It plays completely into how unhinged Cutter is. It also pushes Erica to go into another level to win.

The second confrontation nails the impactful build-up for the case as well. Gabi’s story has been the backbone of the entire arc and receives an magnificent send-off. Tynion mixes in elements of tragedy and triumph in an even blend to close out this tale. The ending issue arc reminds readers of how even in victory, there is much defeat. It further defines how incredible this series is

Dell’edera and Muerto bring the action at a fast pace throughout this issue. They mix in only a few moments to let readers catch their breathes. Those moments still jump out as you see Cutter’s insanity go toe-to-toe with Erica’s unbreakable will. It’s a great compliment to the fighting. Readers are gifted a full page panel that kicks off the conclusion of their altercation. It’s also a visual that will arguably cause a vocal “YES!’ reaction as well. That’s how much the art will lock you into the drama.

There are also a few other full-page images that will connect with readers in other ways. The story ranges with extreme highs and lows involving those panels. closing moments bring the story back down to set forth a solid overall conclusion. The parting image couldn’t be crafted any more perfect to conclude this chapter of Erica Slaughter.

GODZILLA HAS APPEARED IN METROPOLIS!!!! Interrupting the proposal attempt of Clark Kent to Lois Lane, Godzilla is looming on the streets of Superman’s City. The Man of Steel engages while Lois and the city’s residents look on with fear and reservations.

The Justice League has had their own issues to deal with as a Lex Luthor led Legion Of Doom has their own plans in motion. However, when Toyman goes roguewith a powerful artifact, plans change quickly for all involved. Plus, King Kong has now entered the field as well?!

This current chapter opens up with Superman addressing the Godzilla matter head on. After the talk goes nowhere, the fighting begins. Godzilla swaps Superman away like a fly! Some of the Justice League is now en route to Metroplois to help. Readers see that Godzilla might not be the only monster the heroes will need to worry about.

The Monsterverse has now invaded the DC Universe via Toyman! How will the heroes fare against these new threats? What of the Legion of Doom? The action escalates as the heroes race to stop the new threats. Will they succeed? If the closing portion of the book is any indication, things look bleak with a shocking visual to send readers home with.

Buccellato presents the beginning of a heavyweight showdown for the ages. Superman versus Godzilla comes across as the major conflict all fans would want and expect. Buccellato paces the opening round with strong moments. Seeing the Man Of Steel challenged in such a manner adds another dynamic for readers to process.

The rest of the DCU Heroes are presented spotlight moments which is nothing but wins for readers. The story never lacks the “special event” feel which continues to illustrate how significant this story is. The writing is winning fans over with ease with another great issue.

Duce and Guerrero craft some unforgettable images for this latest chapter of pop culture icons. The initial “first blow” thrown between Superman and Godzilla is presented with an excellent two-page spread. It sets a high bar for the remainder of their fight. The introductions of the Monsterverse representatives also are gifted with a two page spread, instantly connecting with readers about the dangers happening.

The “Gotham Monster” imagery feels like its’ taken right from a Hollywood blockbuster. The parting shot of one character’s walk-off is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Heading towards the final moments, the art team throws in some interesting dynamics before bowing out of the second issue. It closes with an unforgettable final page spotlighting the threats unfolding on the DC Earth. An exceptional job from the opening page!

Along with the animated series, the brand has made the transition to comic form with Star Wars: Visions by Takashi Okazaki in 2022. The brand is now returning with an all new story with one of the biggest and innovative creators at the helm.

The issue begins with a great introduction page explaining the major players of Kako (a “rebel” to Ankok and Sith descendant), Popo (a resident in Ankok’s territory), Gel (Kako’s android partner) and Tata (An Ankok advocate).

In the wake of a Sith Lord’s demise, a cult has risen with hopes of a new era centered around Ankok. As the followers have grown, some question the true intentions of the powerful figure.

The story begins with mysterious followers draped in red walking towards a guarded compound. Inside a figure is sitting on a throne at the top of the altar of worship. Once the red sun aligns itself through the compound opening, it shifts colors to black. Readers see how this fuels the figure sitting on their throne. This figure is Ankok.

With Tata serving as a guide, Ankok’s influence generates into her followers. Two in the crowd look with disbelief as the rest of the crowd disperses. They are Kako and Gel. as they head into town, the pair comes across Popo. The interaction is brief but leads Popo to follow the pair. Once on the outskirts of town, readers see a moment with Kako that sets in motion a plan to expose Ankok’s truths once and for all.

How does the gamble pay off? The moments following show a test of will as Kako takes the plan right to Ankok’s altar. The action picks up as the struggle becomes overwhelming. Momoko brings a vivid and unforgettable tale to life within these pages. From the initial stages, Ankok is menacing and intimidating right from the full page panel.

The followers’ rection to seeing this “god” is frightening of the power she possesses on them. This plays in contrast to Kako, who’s ever defiant of believing in what she is claiming.

The turning point in the story is the quiet moment involving Kako. Momoko gives enough insight to the readers without fully tipping her hand to what’s next. The final confrontation is set up perfectly will well-set pacing.

The visuals are breathtaking as the journey into the truth takes flight. Never does any panel lack the tension and excitement of the moments unfolding. Its’ conclusion will leave readers with many emotions but all will leave readers very pleased for this experience.

G.I. JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO #301 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the grand return of a legendary comic. Throughout the course of history, the G.I. Joe franchise has been one of the most popular in pop culture. From live action movies to the classic animated series to unforgettable toys, the brand has made its’ mark with fans for decades. One of the biggest win has been its’ comic book runs.

Since the 1940’s, there has been a connection between G.I. Joe and comics. However, if you talk to most comic fans these days, their first real memories were based in the 1980’s with the run via Marvel Comics.

With an impressive 155 issue run under the voice of Larry Hama, the series left a lasting footprint with fans. The rights had moved to a few different publishers since the series wrapped at Marvel in 1994. Last readers saw, issue #300 hit shelves in November 2022.

Fast forward to the summer of 2023 and little did fans know that spinning out of Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics’ VOID RIVALS would be the birth of the Energon Universe! The new landscape would be the home for both G.I. Joe and Transformers! With fans buzzing about what is coming, Skybound is bringing back the flagship book in a monster way with the voice of G.I. Joe leading the way once again!

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #301 by Larry Hama, Chris Mooneyham, Francesco Segala and Pat Brosseau picks up where things left off for the Real American Heroes! Let’s take a closer look to see how this return fares!

The issue opens up with a fantastic “who’s Who” recap of the history of G.I. Joe. Readers get a quick glimpse into G.I. Joe and Cobra and some of the key players involved. (Editor note: This is brilliant and I wish more companies did this with series)!

The main story begins with Duke and Wild Bill flying over Cobra Island. With a damaged plane, they’re trying to salvage the flight, not to mention the precious cargo of a Joe team on-board.

On the ground level, Dr. Mind-bender and Serpentor Khan (COBRA notables) have activated the Mutant Virus Bomb. Preferring this method to defeat the Joes instead of surrender, time is now a factor for the good guys. Outside of Mind-bender’s lair is another Joe squad led by Snake-eyes and Scarlett ready to go.

With the bomb activated, who will survive? The tension races as Cutter tries evacuating the team on the ground. With one note-worthy figure on-board the ship escaping, an event happens proving how dangerous and deadly this conflict is between GI Joe and Cobra.

Once the smoke clears, readers see how this series is a far cry from the cartoons and toys. THIS is vintage GI Joe comics. The aftermath will leave a lasting impression that you can’t help but want to make sure you don’t miss another issue of what is going to be another incredible run in the legacy of G.I. Joe stories.

In case anyone is diving in for the first time, Hama picks up right where he’s left off involving his story-telling. There is a reason he is synonymous with this franchise. Hama establishes the high stakes right off the bat and never lets up. His dialogue between Serpentor and Mind-Bender illustrates how unhinged Serpentor is and how far he’s willing to go to win.

On the flip side, no one brings out the voices of the Joes better. Duke and Will Bill’s story keeps escalating until it hits the perfect timing and mark. The escape from the island has its’ drama and one moment sparks a bigger match to explode later in this new series. The resolution of the bomb kickstarts a few avenues for the team to venture down in future issues. This is a great re-introduction issue for older fans and a solid jump-on for new readers wanting to find out about the hype.

Mooneyham adds a gritty style to the Joe imagery for this issue. It gels perfectly with Hama’s dialogue. The intro pages are an easy win with readers. Once they conclude, the art speeds events up quickly to layer the dangers of what Cobra is doing. This all leads to an excellent full page image of the teams trying to escape.

The one major moment of the escape comes across to readers as a huge deal, even if they’re not familiar with everyone involved. Its’ following sequences show a variety of reactions. The panels construct the foundation for a lasting image to close this chapter out with. There is so much to compliment with the art for this return issue.

The return of the long-running fandom doesn’t miss staking its claim as a must-read series. With Hama’s legendary writing backed by Mooneyham’s superb visuals, the saga of G.I. Joe strikes back to win over fans new and old alike. Don’t leave the comic shops without this in your possession!

The issue kicks off with Optimus Prime talking with Spike Whitwicky. Optimus is admiring the beauty of Earth but accidently steps on a deer. Readers see how the pair spins out of that moment into giving a soft introduction into the other’s past. With the past issue’s events of losing Bumblebee and Jetfire, Optimus needed the moment to regroup and refocus for what is his mission now.

All the while, Starscream is leading the Decepticons into hunting down Energon. They attack a power plant and are preparing to harvest the energy to feast. The surrounding humans are not going down without a fight. They try resisting but are easily disposed of. Reinforcements are informed of the situation. One hero flies his fighter jet right into the crossfire of danger. Waiting in his path is Starscream, ready to end this interference once and for all. Who wins this round?

Readers witness a major player make their debut into the Energon Universe as the action ramps up. Once the encounter ends, an opening shot is taken that will not be the last from a Real American Hero. It appears they might have some back-up coming in this fight. The question lingering when the chapter ends is: will it be enough to save Earth?

Johnson wastes no time catching readers up to speed on what Optimus Prime is all about. The heart-felt conversation with Spike leads to a glimpse at the greater picture involving the conflict between Autobots and Decepticons. Readers bare witness to how Prime is adapting to his new home and fighting the good fight. They also see that he’s not alone in protecting the Earth from the unwelcomed.

The debut of the recognizable character feels like the big event longtime fans want it to be. The action is crisp and moves quickly. There is no wasted set-up. The closing moment of the battle will be one to get fans excited about what is coming down the road without question. The closing act brings the energy back to a normal level as more set-up work is done for an already engaging story.

The art is vintage DWJ. BIG action when it happens. Excellent character moments to invest the readers in-between. The opening moments with Optimus and Spike reflects the caring Optimus has while showing the pain he’s dealing with losing members he considers family. This is capped off with a near full panel shot of Cybertron as Optimus descibes it to the readers.

This is offset by the amazing high-flying action battle between Starscream and THAT character. The panels pop off the page with every motion taken by the combatants. Even when Starscream makes a deadly action, it is answered with a striking line of panels, letting the character have a closing moment to fully announce their debut to the EU. Leaving with a subtle reveal, the art closes the door on this chapter, leaving fans wanting more as soon as they can read it.

PUNISHER #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are entering a new era with one of Marvel Comics’ most infamous characters. Ever since his debut in Amazing Spider-Man #129 in 1974, Frank Castle has been a walking force of nature against evil. With a vicious disregard for lawbreakers, the walking death machine has left a polarizing trail of moments with readers due to his complex history and views.

That all changed with the events of The Punisher #12 by Jason Aaron, Jesus Saiz and Paul Azaceta. Frank Castle is gone. That doesn’t mean there is no Punisher.

Punisher #1 by David Pepose, Dave Wachter, Dan Brown and Cory Petit sends a new character on the path of vengeance and justice. Let’s not wait another second and see what happens now, shall we?

The story begins at a destroyed house. The name “Garrison” is barely recognized on the weathered mailbox. The police have arrived to investigate the scene. Readers see the detectives at work. The home belonged to Joe Garrision. His wife Stephanie and two kids, Laura and Danny were killed in what is being called a possible gas leak explosion. After more investigating, a bomb is found in the wreckage…

Things shift to The Black Dragon Lagoon. A man is at the bar. Surrounding him is the Inner Demon Gang, known for wearing dragon-esque masks. The dialogue reflects they are protecting the man. The lights go out and a figure stands at the doorway. He asks for Sergei Federov aka The Sokovian. In naming his transgressions, The Sokovian is blamed for the explosion at the Garrisions.

Readers don’t have to wait long before the action begins. In-between the bullets and barbaric behavior, the talk switches back to the crime scene where the explosion is looking to have been a personal attack. Once back at the club, the body count has climbed and one man stands in the chaos: Joe Garrison.

As he flees the scene to an undisclosed location, the ruse of his “suburban identity” becomes exposed. With a SHIELD logo on the wall, the perceived “accountant” is far from ordinary.

As the news blares on the television, Garrison is the person of interest behind the bombing. That isn’t the only news as reports of the Inner Demon Gang massacre leak. The public account keeps hinting at the same question: Is Frank Castle back as the Punisher?

From here, readers see Garrison’s mission come to light. His path of vengeance leads him into another dangerous direction. Can this new “Punisher” survive long enough to find justice? With tension mounting, Garrison’s path leads readers into the battlefield and closes with a lasting impression this story is far from over.

With Pepose at the writing duties, there was no doubt fans would get their money’s worth. After reading this debut, the writing borrows the “best” of Frank Castle and merges it with Joe Garrison’s duality as SHIELD agent and mournful man. The opening act doesn’t hold back on establishing Garrison as a threat in his own right.

Once Garrison comes across a threat out of his league, Pepose gets creative in how to overcome the odds. This plays into the logo hidden in the lair background. Where Castle’s background and training was when he started is different than Garrison. The skill level is featured in the final act and leads to leaving its own mark on readers that a new era has started.

Pacing slows down just enough to give readers a break in the action before the bullets and blows start flying again. With just one issue, Pepose lets fans know the Joe Garrison era has kicked off with a bang.

Wachter and Brown bring the brutality of the character legacy with a new energy to it. Garrison’s attacks are displayed with more precision and patience than Castle’s. The conclusion of the Inner Demon Gang massacre gives readers a standout full panel page.

Once the main antagonist appears, the art holds nothing back at the savage technique Garrison uses to survive. The panels reflect the viciousness Garrison uses in his attacks. This is also compliments by a series of panels that raise the stakes with the pressure it builds. Once the shot is fired to end the conflict, there is no illusion to who is standing in evils’ way. The parting visual ends events the only way it can: leaving readers waiting for the next issue to drop. Solid job all around.

No Frank Castle, No Problem. Pepose blends the classic Punisher themes with a new character with excellent writing. The action flies off the pages via Wachter and Brown’s vision of unrelenting fury. With the action cranked up to a fever pitch, there is no way you want to miss this book when it drops on New Comic Book Day!

BIRDS OF PREY #3 (DC COMICS)

For this edition, we’re following along the return of one of DC Comics’ most legendary teams. With a brand-new lineup and an impossible mission at hand, the Birds Of Prey have their work cut out for them. The question now is: who will stop them first - the mission or each other?

BIRDS OF PREY #3 by Kelly Thompson, Leonardo Romero, Jordie Bellaire and Clayton Cowles takes readers on a collision course with an immovable object. Let’s see how the team fares as they inch closer to conflict.

Assembled by Black Canary, Zealot, Big Bartha, Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) and Harley Quinn comprise this fromation of the Birds Of Prey. Their mission: Break into the Island of Themyscira and free Sin (Black Canary’s “sister”) from the Amazons before they cause the end of the world. Simple, right?

With the personalities clashing, the team follows a plan by Harley to sneak onto the island. With the help of King Shark, things look to be improving. With the Amazons preparing for what’s next, a possessed voice claims “the vessel is not ready”. Meanwhile the team is outside the island ready to make their entrance.

Sneaking in through the stomach of a Megalodon, the team enters the island. With the team split up, readers see the action unfold. Can they pull this mission off? Things escalate rather quickly as the goal might just be in sight. However, there is one factor still looming to deal with. The latter half of this chapter sets up for a major collision course which will have readers on the edge of their seats from. No spoilers here, but the final image is going to have fans very excited for what’s next.

Thompson blends in the personality conflicts with a search and rescue tale that doesn’t miss. Anytime Harley Quinn is involved, nobody knows how things will play out. Thompson presents her as both the ultimate wild-card and team player. This makes for mixed results with her teammates but gives this story a new dynamic to deal with. However, the breakout character (thus far) has been Zealot. Thompson keeps a safe distance between her and the team with distinct placement of her actions. it is very noteworthy as the story moves onward.

The latter half of the chapter provides a great deal of action involving two not connected with the team. It re-enforces the importance of the mission and the “final boss” which the team needs to overcome to succeed. The story has been a great read thus far with no signs of slowing down.

Romero and Bellaire provide a high-paced backdrop for what’s unfolding here. The reactions to Harley’s comments make for a subtle break in the tension of the mission. Zealot’s actions also play a role here as the panels set up more of her mystery yet to be told. The action delivers on showing why this team was assembled. The latter half amplifies that even further. The art reflects the “big fight feel” between two of DC’s well known characters. This all leads to a full page visual that brings this issue to a close with a loud exclamation point!

For this entry, the smoke has cleared in Gotham City. One is left standing after the war of “The Bat Family”. Now it’s time for DC Comics’ Dark Knight to take center stage with a familiar foe waiting in the wings.

BATMAN #139 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Jorge Corona, Tomeu Morey, Ivan Plascencia and Clayton Cowles ushers in a new era for the Caped Crusader with an all new adventure. Let’s take a closer look to see how things shape up post “the Gotham War”, shall we?

With the fallout of “Knight Terrors”, Batman’s dream of Gotham City has turned into a nightmare. Selina Kyle aka Catwoman has unveiled a new initiative into handling crime. This didn’t sit well with Batman and civil war was declared amongst Gotham’s most notable protectors. The struggle came to a fever pitch when Batman and Catowman squared off with Vandal Savage, who made a play to make Gotham his during the conflict.

During the conflict, Catwoman and Savage are presumed dead. Batman has also become isolated from the bat-family due to his actions. Now left with only his back-up personality of Zur-En-Arrh, Bruce Wayne has never been more alone or more dangerous.

This new phase opens up with a woman talking with police. She describes an encounter with someone who tried robbing her after winning at the Iceberg Lounge. A scream was documented but it wasn’t from the attack. It was from someone who saw who stopped it. The heroic figure was none other than Batman.

The story shifts to a man returning to his apartment. Bruce Wayne is in disguise and recapping the night’s events. However, readers quickly see there is a name on the board that draws the greatest attention: JOKER.

With a murder of a toy company heir, Batman begins to cypher the clues of the Clown Prince of Crime. What scheme does the Joker have in store now? All roads lead to a confrontation pushing Batman to his limits. Can he stop the Joker or will he even get the chance? The closing moments throw a big X factor into the mix which looks to complicate events even further than Batman can possibly imagine.

Zdarsky sets events in motion for a greatly complex tale. The introduction plays out like a traditional Batman story. It doesn’t take long to switch gears and see how Batman is coping with the Gotham War fallout. Zdarsky paints a picture of fractured and forward thinking. Seeing the influence of Zur-En-Arrh still lingering gives readers a sense of uneasiness when the Bat needs to be his sharpest.

Diving into the crime at hand, the writing reflects a great detective story. Things shift quickly as Batman dives further into the plot. The added layers of Joker’s attack make for the frightening scenario. It is imagery that will stand out with the haunting dialogue. Even with this at play, readers won’t see the closing moments coming, which makes for a great ending sequence of events.

Jiménez and Morey craft excellent imagery throughout this issue. From the introduction, the full page panel credits page pops right off the page. The red coloring heightens the feel as the page makes a bold statement of return for Batman. The red coloring plays a part in building the initial investigation of Joker’s latest case. It plays as a nice assist to the half page visual of the horrific first crime. Another excellent page is Batman walking into the location of the follow-up clue. It gives an ominous feel as the tension builds up.

The Joker’s personal attacks make an impact with the details involved. Readers bare witness to how things are presented and the chills from the visuals grow the story’s strength even further. The closing pages throw a great mix into where things were looking to go. The art team makes a great final image before wrapping this initial chapter up, beginning a long wait for what’s next. There’s much to enjoy here for readers.

Whenever the story involves Batman and The Joker, fan expectations are almost unreachable. That is not the case with this issue. Strong writing and exceptional art builds the foundation for what is sure to be a memorable Batman story for the ages.

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of an explosive crossover from DC Comics. Anything Gothan City is the battlefield, readers know Batman will fight anyone to the end to defend it and his vision of justice. However for this fight, it’s his “Bat Family” providing the opposition. Lading the charge is his lover/enemy Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.

The battle has morphed out of a simple question of ethics into a no-holds-barred fight leaving nothing but shattered ties and a city prime to be conquered in its wake.

Due to the fallout from “Knight Terrors”, Bruce Wayne aka Batman was asleep for quite some time. When he finally wakes up, Gotham City’s crime rate has drastically been reduced. A new initiative has been started amongst the criminals of Gotham. The mastermind behind it? None other than Selina Kyle aka Catwoman!

Selina has been teaching the lower level of criminals a “Robin Hood” style of activity. The movement has lowered crimes in Gotham to astronomical records. This doesn’t sit well with Batman, as he sees all crime as universally bad. It also doesn’t help that Zur-En-Arrh, his emergency back-up personality is active due to the Knight Terrors ramifications. The cold-hearted mindset decrees that Selina’s operation must be stopped after a life is lost during a heist.

Sides have been taken amongst the Bat family. Drastic actions have been taken by Batman with no remorse. Of all the victims, no one was hurt more deeper than Jason Todd aka The Red Hood with the actions of the possessed Dark Knight. All the while during the Bat family civil war, Vandal Savage, the immortal nemesis of the DCU, has swooped in making a play to conquer Gotham. Now with the battle at the breaking point, who walks away the winner of Gotham City?

This issue begins with Scandal Savage, daughter of Vandal and formerly aligned with Catwoman, organizing Selina’s former pupils. They have been given their orders to get the meteor fragments which will give Vandal strength of unknown levels. Meanwhile, Tim Drake (Robin) is heading to investigate an explosion. When he arrives, he and readers aren’t ready for what’s next.

Led by Two-Face, a group of Batman’s rogues make their way down the street, nearly killing a few civilians. Overwhelmed, Tim is taken hostage.

All the while, Batman, Catwoman and Jason are meeting where it appears the real Bruce has come back to the fold. Readers witness a tremendous speech and plea to the family to come together to stop Vandal’s attack. The question now is: Can the broken family refrom and save Gotham?

The answer is aimed to please, but with overwhelming odds, t might not be enough. The ending gives this story fitting epic moments with one especially outshining them all. Its’ fall-out looks to set up a new stat quo but one can’t help but wonder if the bonds have been broken beyond repair?

The writing team bring a great deal of noteworthy events to the finale. Seeing the “old” Batman re-emerge to inspire the family was a solid way to shift gears towards the common enemy of the Savages. At the end of it all, Justice is what both warring sides of the Bat-family want, with Selina being the voice of reason. There are excellent moments with the various family members teaming up but none bigger than “The Cat and The Bat”.

Throughout their history, there’s few like the pairing of Bruce and Selina. Seeing them pair up in the later issues gives readers a reminder of why this conflict has been so personal. The writers carry this mood into the final battle. There’s a fair mix of action and drama that is sure to please.

The epilogue is one that might throw some off. It feels like a reset until something re-surfaces which leaves some questions heading into the future of Bruce Wayne. Overall, it has the “big fight feel” that you ant to see in a finale. How long it lasts will be the thought moving forward.

The art captures the intensity of the ending at hand. the introduction of two-Face and the rogues makes a big splash at how far Gotham has crumbled due to the war. It’s followed up by some great action panels with more of the family involved. The meeting between Bruce, Selina and Jason carries a bug emotional burden of Bruce’s actions.

This reflects later in the issue when Bruce and Selina pair up. There is subtle facial expressions indicating the extreme highs and lows reflecting the conflict and its surrounding factors. Readers will have a lasting impression of what transpired and an idea of where things lead now.

FINAL GRADE: 8 OUT OF 10

When the smoke clears, the fate of Gotham City is made evident to readers with a fitting conclusion to the Bat family civil war. With themes reminding readers about the bond of family through the writing and art, This crossover conclusion is sure to have fans talking on New Comic Book Day.

VOID RIVALS #5 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are diving back into the Energon Universe with arguably the breakout title of 2023. Since it’s debut, the story of Darak and Solila has been a huge hit with fans. Nearing the completion of its’ first arc, there are many questions to where the unlikely duo heads next. With the addition of Transformers and the upcoming G.I. Joe related books, there is no doubt that the story is just getting started.

VOID RIVALS #5 by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Patricio Delpeche and Rus Wooton raises the stakes as a homecoming might not be so welcome. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening now, shall we?

The issue begins with both Darak and Solila being detained on Zertonia. When Solila thought she was making a deal returning to her home, it turns out there was more double-crossing to be had. Darak is assessing the danger they’re in while Solila is processing what’s next. Readers see the pair try reasoning the situation before Darak is led away for interrogation.

Meanwhile, Solila is visited by a surprise figure: Mistress Vill. Readers quickly find out there is a connection between the two as Solila is reffered to as a “Keeper Of The Light”. This does bother her as she pleads she has no ties to anyone. The conversation concludes with a new possible direction for Solila in light of recent actions.

As for Darak, his imprisonment continues and hope looks bleak. He keeps a good front but the torture wears on him. Darak’s luck might have changed as some help appears in an unlikely place.

How do the pair survive what’s next? Readers see more players enter the game of control as the story progresses. With mounting stakes, the unlikely pair have their destinies in their own hands. What path will they choose? If the final pages are any indications, the secrets of the Sacred Ring are about to explode!

Just when readers think they know the answers, Kirkman switches up the questions. The mystery surrounding Solila drives the main focus of this issue. Returning home, there is a sense of danger and grave consequences after her initial arrival. With the introduction of Mistress Vill, Kirkman constructs an engaging situation for the book’s most enigmatic character.

Equal billing is also shown to Darak’s new direction. The reveals of where he is heading now is an exciting change to the story. With the addition of many new players, the direction of the book can shift gears easily. Both roads look to lead back to a confrontation and this is nothing but win for the readers.

De Felici and Delpeche present the tensious mood between the leading pair with very noteworthy visuals. The opening scene in detainment is a strong moment with the body language reflecting the trouble they are in. The conversation plays out well with the mannerisms being showcased through their masks.

There are some great Transformers influenced pages to break up the story which long time fans of the “Robots In Disguise” will be excited to see. Darak’s story escalades quickly and the art team gives the readers a climbing theme of anxiousness to see where he heads now. The closing moments tie both characters’ new directions together, ending the issue with much to break down.

The universe of Void Rivals grows with more combustible elements thrown in the mix. Kirkman, De Felici and the team present new consequences for Solila’s actions with fantastic writing and art. The series heads into unknown territory and this issue is one you simply can’t afford to miss on New Comic Book Day!

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LATERN #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out a tale starring one of DC Comics’ first superheroes! When fans hear the name “Green Lantern”, most might think of Hal Jordan or John Stewart amongst the legendary Green Lantern Corps. However, the first hero associated with the emerald power ring debuted in 1940. His name is Alan Scott.

The story beings with a 1941 front page newspaper story touting “THE GREEN LANTERN DOES IT AGAIN!”. Readers see the Bulletin lead report breaking down an encounter versus Solomon Grundy. A voice speaks up and claims the paper didn’t catch everything.

The voice belongs to J. Edgar Hoover. He’s in the CIA Headquarters talking withe the hero in the spotlight himself, Alan Scott aka The Green Lantern. Hoover is grilling Scott over the encounter and why the beloved Justice Society Of America (JSA) weren’t featured. Scott states how his association with the team is very loose in his opinion. Hoover disagrees and applies pressure for a stronger bond. The pressure is in the form of a file pertaining to “Project Crimson”.

Readers also witness Hoover having a file with intimate photos of Scott and fellow US Army solider John Ladd.

The story shifts to 1936 California and happier times between Scott and Ladd. Scott seems to question his relationship’s rection to the general public of the 1936. The pair set course for an army project that could mean a future for the lovers. That project is called “Project Crimson”.

However, the story jumps back to 1941 and Green Lantern is needed. Readers bare witness that the call to action is no ordinary mission. The stage is set for Alan Scott to be tested with his future while processing an area of his past that stays with him to this day. If readers thought that was enough, there is no possible way to prepare for the final page! Get ready for a story that won’t let the light burn out for all who bear witness.

Sheridan gives readers a story driven with love and emotion. Alan Scott is portrayed as someone conflicted as to what he wants versus society’s expectations during that time period. The love story between Scott and Ladd is an easy connection with readers. How it progresses adds another dimension to the superhero aspect of “Project Crimson”.

Knowing how vital their work is, Sheridan never lets that overshadow the power of the couple’s love. Tying it back to the future in 1941 establishes a greater impact on Scott, who is still coming to terms with his superhero career. Bringing this all together with a final page that is certain to have fans talking is a great compliment to the spectacular direction of this engaging tale.

Tormey and Herms provide strong visuals to balance the writing out with. The opening full page newspaper panel sets events in course with a direct statement. The following panels showcase the chess match between Hoover’s demands and Scott’s feelings of carving his own path. The panels featuring Scott and Ladd’s talk of their relationship are bursting with emotional reactions.

From Scott’s hesitation to Ladd’s undying support, these make for the biggest wins from the art team on connecting with the audience. The final act heightens the looming threat at hand while bringing events full circle. This is perfectly closed out with a superb final page that readers will be shocked to see and can’t wait to see more of this team’s work.

Love is the most powerful energy in the universe. The latest saga involving the JSA standout character leaves no doubt in readers minds of this with an unforgettable first issue. Sheridan’s emotionally driven writing blends with Tormey and Herms’ vibrant art to offer readers a story that transcends the average superhero themes. This is one on New Comic Book Day you absolutely have to have before leaving the shop.
