Kelly has really moved Parker out of his comfort zone with this chapter. Having him lead a motely crew of captured aliens makes for a unique dynamic. Seeing Rocket Raccoon’s sharp wit battle with Parker’s logic is a fun read. This moves events enough to circle back to their original dilemma. Starblood is captive to this group. What is his fate? The answer harkens back to the Spider’s DNA.

Readers watch as the debate rages on. The writing pleads a few different looks before deciding. It leads into a present day problem. In dealing with The Black Order, readers see how this “team” is in over their heads. Pacing does jump a bit during these moments. It doesn’t hamper the experience but backs up Parker’s stance. The conclusion teases a more traditional finish. Readers where this story could go. However, Kelly does throw in a sudden change with the final page. Seeing where this choice goes will be enjoyable to follow.

Larraz has quickly mastered how to do Spider-Man action scenes. The opening battle is electrified with a spectacular full page image. Seeing the eclectic group on the attack should be a crowd pleaser. This gives way to the past decision about Starblood. The art shows how certain characters have a strong reaction to his fate. It also provides some comical moments via Rocket. His mannerisms are show stealing.

The action images will be the ones most talked about. Readers will be impressed with Raelith as she fights. A full page shot nails the landing as the fight grows. This momentum carries into the main event portion. Larraz and company welcome in Black Dwarf via near full page. This speeds events up as Spidey takes the fight into his own hands. There’s plenty of fast-paced panels to maneuver through strikes. It leads to a shocking image that ends the conflict. The closing pages tie up loose ends before the end panel shakes things up. A lone image with few words drives home how this story is far from over.

Williamson sets a few things in motion with the writing. The flashback to Krypton sets up teases for a better payoff later in the book. Once in the “present”, the unlikely key hero steps into the role he has dreamt off. Booster Gold steals this issue. His banter with Time Trapper continues to provide hope when its’ lost. Even as events jump to the 853rd Century, the fight against Darkseid rages on.

Readers watch as the odds turn against Gold and company. The writing doesn’t pull back on the weight of events. There is an overwhelming sense of loss during this portion. One moment swings back to hope at a shocking time. Has the real threat to Darkseid been here all along? The question lingers as the close starts taking shape. Williamson throws in a few more verbal jabs before dropping the final page. Once here, the final words uttered starts off the main event for the fate of the DCU. No pressure here, right?

Putri & Tormey split art duties for this special. The Krypton flashback moves the sub-plot forward with a strong two page splash. This steps back to allow Booster Gold’s story to fully develop. An incredible two page splash reflects on key “All In” moments. It serves as a great refresher of what has been built thus far. The scene also launches events into a very dark future.

The 853rd Century brawl is a wild sight to behold. Another two page splash starts to justify Time Trapper’s stance. This builds up tension between time lost parties. It starts giving more sympathy to Gold, who’s thriving in this issue. The action scenes feel loud as the never-say-die mantra of Gold carries on. This is capped off in an excellent full page image. Its’ aftermath speeds into the closing pages. Even as the Krypton story is sprinkled throughout, It falls short of the main take. The two page close leads readers into the excellent closing page. A full page panel provides a moment of peace before another fight takes hold.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The prelude to DC K.O. turns into a showcase for a forgotten hero’s will to fight. Williamson pens a steady lead-in for the crossover. The art hits its’ strive when Gold takes center stage. It is a great bridge for where All In has gone and K.O. looks to take events further.

What a tangled web has been spun here. Ewing throws in many combustible elements into this twisted view. The opening depicts a seedy tone as some familiar faces enter the picture. The writing moves events into the new dynamics of relationships. One that is very similar to previous times is that of Oliver Queen. Readers see how Mr. Queen tries selling the notion of fighting the good fight. Unfortunately, no one is buying.

This becomes very crystal clear when a meeting takes over. Featuring the very elite of rogues, readers watch as the egos becomes enamored at their past and future. Ewing takes chances with new visions of more heroes. This drives home how vastly different this world is.

It takes a backseat to a very violent delivery. Readers can only watch in shock as the meetings’ proposal takes a grim twist. As intense of a point this makes, one character steps into an unimaginable role. The unlikely voice of reason starts breaking down more possibilities. A sharp delivery moves the dialogue into a new area. This pushes the dire agenda into the closing pages. Once their vision lays its foundation, a starling reminder is given. There is no happy ending in sight. All that fuels this universe is the quest for power. It is a true reflection of its creator.

Readers won’t be able to comprehend the final page. It is quite the mic drop moment. Had it not be for the epilogue, this would be the buzz of this book. A very polarizing figure makes his way into this landscape. What he represents for this world remains to be seen. No one will mind the wait as a future uncertain will have them locked in.

Camuncoli and the art team spare no expense as they unveil this dark world. The throwback opening full page teases enough for a larger payoff later. There is a sense of normalcy with Oliver Queen. Seeing his reactions when “Jubal” is mentioned highlights his anger. This moves away when the business meeting starts taking shape. The near full page panel brings the major players into the very dangerous spotlight.

Blending in brutal flashbacks along with present day reveals, the art shines. It brings more gravity to the uneasy proposal. Readers watch as their view of the hero counterparts slips further from their hold. It conveys the dangerous threat they present. This all goes up a few levels with a brutal two page splash.

There is no way to hide the cold visuals. It sinks further into reality with a voice grabs the floor. Watching this person’s expressions start to slowly break sends a message of dangerous consequences. This moves events into a huge two page splash. The meeting has spawned a greater threat than previous thought. Its’ epilogue can make a run for that claim. Readers watch as a new player enters via full page panel. How the heroes will respond here is anyone’s guess.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The rise of good in the Absolute Universe causes much concern for a few major players. Ewing crafts a dark vision of control and conquest with the writing. Camuncoli and the art team press into the unhinged look of Evil for a chapter that sets the table for a larger feast in the making. Just wait for that last page…

X-MEN #22 (MARVEL COMICS)

Times for the X-Men haven’t been great lately. Cyclops was arrested in a confrontation with Agent Lundqvist. Magik decided to go on a covert mission with some of the members. Their target: Trevor Fitzroy & The Upstarts.

The mission didn’t go exactly to plan. They walked into a trap. During the fight, Juggernaut crossed a line. With blood on their hands, the team now awaits Cyclops’ return. Chances are he won’t be thrilled about this.

X-MEN #22 by Jed MacKay, Carlos Fabian Villa, Fernando Sifuentes and Clayton Cowles sets the stage for the upcoming “Age Of Revelation” storyline.

MacKay opens up with Cyclops getting his release from jail. Left with a haunting message form Lundqvist, his mood seems somewhat calm. This changes when Magik arrives for him. Their exchange tips off what readers knew was coming. One element that is hidden is Fiztroy’s reason of capture. The writing establishes the move as non heroic, but more of political strategy. In comparison to the other X-team books, this one maintains a more militaristic sense to it.

Fireworks do come sooner than later. The exchange with Beast and “Juggie” cranks up the intensity. Knowing a line was crossed, both argue their stance. It throws the reader a question of where they side. The fallout leaves Beast asking a theme very connected with this team concerning kills. Tensions are boiling everywhere as the story moves to its’ close.

Doug Ramsey shows up at their doorstep. Considering recent events, there is much pause on this appearance. It leads to a more out of character moment for Cyclops. With how he has been in recent years, this move is more awkward that surprising. It leads to a very dramatic close as a new era is upon the X-Men (again).

Villa steps in for art duties for this chapter. The opening chapter with Summers and Chief Robbins carries a casual vibe. It is interrupted by Magik via half panel image. At this stage, readers can see the tensions start brewing. This moves over to the Fiztroy segment. It is easily seen how buttons are being pushed. The space provides a great transition point for another face-off.

The conversation between Beast and Juggernaut doesn’t take long to explode. Readers watch as each panel conveys their views. A solid split-face image drives home their differing views. It becomes more gas on the fire once Cyclops returns. The art shows the team disfunction as he speaks his mind. Ramsey’s appearance throws more off via near full panel. His exchange with Cyclops brings a new arrogance to his answers. The team reactions are a bit more eye-raising. It takes nothing away from the final page. A full panel image sends everything into its’ latest event, ready or not.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

Who are these X-Men? Heroes? Killers? Something else? Those are some of the questions raised in this chapter. MacKay throws some conflicts into a greater scheme via the wriitng. Villa and the art team zoom in on the various takes before the end page. Once here, the X-Universe prepares to head into unknown chaos. Here we go again.

SUPERMAN #30 (DC COMICS)

Time has run out on the Man Of Steel. After being attacked by an Absolute Legion Of Super Heroes, Superman is saved by The Time Trapper. Knowing that DOOMSDAY is the man in the cloak only complicates things further. Placed in a pocket dimension, the ghost of the past continue to appear.

Superboy-Prime has also been brought here for safety. The Kryptonian Pair deny orders and look for answers themselves. This puts them on an unlikely path to the Absolute Universe. Once here, Superman finds the forgotten hero Booster Gold. He also finds more than he bargained for as Superboy-Prime switches sides.

Williamson delivers a massive pay-off for what has been building here. The intro into Saturn Girl’s backstory shows the influence of Darkseid. It comes across more of a possession feel that only grows from here. Adding in Superboy-Prime to the ranks really stacks the deck. Readers watch as hope slowly slips further out of grasp. The moment continuously breaks Superman down into a state of despair. It is a rare sight but effective.

There is a great break into this story. “Where is Lex Luthor” is a question looming in this series since #25. The writing proves an exclamation point answer. How he will factor in the future is unclear. In this moment, his presence is a how steal. Had it not been for the final act, Luthor takes this issue. Another character grabs the spotlight right to the end.

The subtle 4th wall lead-in is well placed. His dialogue with Superman is superb. It is a new side that readers have never seen. This proves to be the change in events needed to conclude this portion of story. The final pages tie into where all roads are heading to. It is a moment that will make the rounds on NCBD as readers process what just happened. Long live the Legion indeed.

Mora and Sanchez open with a bleak flashback. The visions of Saturn Girl’s mind paint a dark picture. This fast forwards into a strong two page splash. Readers see the smug grin on Superboy-Prime’s face as he flips sides. Even as Superman valiantly fights back, the art shows how much of a lost cause it is. This helps to provide a break to highlight a long awaited return.

Luthor’s conflict is swift and direct. The panels break to show how he handles his attacker. It results in a shocking but “Luthor-esque” moment that only he can pull off. This moves into the ever-rising final act. Readers watch as a turn is taken that changes everything. Action starts ramping up as the escape is made. It leads into some personal moments that give a sense of finality coming. Superman’s part is ended with a strong full page shot. The moment is upstaged by the conflict end. Panel structure puts a nice finish to events for now. This moves everything to the close. The final page speaks volumes as another round with Darkseid is inevitable in arrival.

Will Superman save Booster Gold from The absolute Legion? Williamson boldly answers that with a fantastic arc finale. The writing throws a few fakes before solidly connecting in the end. Mora and Sanchez elevate the pages to new heights. It’s a must-read as the DCU prepares for a fight unlike anything they’ve seen before.

Since then, he has disappeared into his twisted world known as “The Absolute Universe.” The JLU has had their own issues to deal with. After “We Are Yesterday” broke the timestream, it opened a dangerous door. Guess who’s coming back for another round?

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #11 by Mark Waid, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Tamra Bonvillain & Ariana Maher unveils a race against time like never before!

Waid sets a high speed pace from page one and never looks back. Seeing the Parademon invasion strike creates a horrific setting. Watching Mr. Terrific screaming for help only adds to the explosive scenarios. It is tough to comprehend how the League is on the defensive with their expansive line-up. The writing clearly establishes how the threat is hitting on multiple levels. It leaves no doubt of the peril they are in.

Even when the story moves to Markovia, the losing sense never strays too far. Watching Darkseid’s legion in action teases what evil lies ahead. Seeing the corruption of Captain Atom and Power Girl unfold makes a loud statement. Readers sense the sub-plot forming before all eyes switch back to the Watchtower. Peeling back the layers on Terrific’s confidence opens up a few directions. It leads to a strong close with more looming overhead. The final image is very familiar as the dark times for the DCU heroes are about to get a whole lot worse.

Di Giandomenico steps in for Mora on art duties. Keeping the breakneck speed of attacks is no easy fear. The panels capture the desperate attempt at escaping. It leads into a fantastic full page image of the attempt to save Doomsday. This sense of urgency follows the Markovian team as they fight the absolute Legion. Little details like Captain Atom’s painful eyes magnify each blow. Even as the team is being seduced by power, their expresses hone in on the danger at hand.

Readers watch as this all unfolds while the Watchtower hope is crashing badly. The action scenes are pouring with huge energic looks. There is a small sense of horror capping them off. It matches the fear in Terrific’s face until the conclusion. A dynamic full page image brings the house down. This leads into a somewhat slower closing. There isn’t much time to pause as the final page exemplifies the terror lying in wait. It’s a solid lead in for what is sure to be an unforgettable event.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The League is being overrun on their home turf with no escape in sight! Waid constructs a combustible stand-off with excellent writing. Di Giandomenico & Bonvillain deliver on huge action while unveiling the true terror ahead. This series never ceases to impress with its’ large roster of legends.

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #5 (DC COMICS)

The DCU is seeing more green these days. When an asteroid of Kryptonite is on the way to Earth. Superman leads a charge to stop it. After stopping it, the Man of Steel is rendered unconscious. When he awakes, a new fear takes hold.

Access to the deadly element is very easy these days. Many wrong hands are in possession of Kryptonite. One of those hands is President Castilho of El Caldero. The state houses the most Kryptonite. When it’s attacked, Superman has to save the day, even if it might kill him.

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #5 by Dan Slott, Rafael Albuquerque, Marcelo Maiolo and Dave Sharpe puts the Man of Tomorrow in a no-win situation.

Slott takes Superman into dangerous grounds for this chapter. After opening at the ever expanding Daily Planet, Superman decides to go on his own to El Caldero. Readers watch as his arrival is met with a surprising result. The writing shows how he is celebrated in the Green Kingdom. Castilho comes across as a showman disguised as a leader. His dialogue is sharp as the issues with the kingdom are addressed.

It doesn’t take long for Superman to push forward with his plans. This allows for Castilho to dive into a version of backstory. The writing plays up the “sympathetic” nature of his character. It eludes to his saving of Superman after the asteroid. This leaves readers with a sense of uncertainty to truth.

As the conflict emerges, Castilho’s tone swings in a predictable manner. Readers watch as he shows what lengths he will go to protect his illusions. His viciousness unveils his true persona. This winds up unlocking a few secrets heading to close. One of which winds up in the final panel. This leaves the audience with a more complex tale than originally thought. It’s a steady cliffhanger until next issue drops along with being a fun read.

Albuquerque & Maiolo return for full duty with this issue. The Daily Planet intro gives an enjoyable spotlight on the supporting cast. Tee-Nah’s optimism shines on the panels. This allows Lois and Clark to have a brief segway before the Superman business begins. From here, the story takes on a more traditional superhero feel.

The two page splash of the El Caldero carnival carries high energy. It allows Sueprman to soak in the crowd reaction to his image. This provides a segway to stand-off between Supes and Castilho. Each show how they refuse to back down. As they move forward, the flashback sequences work extremely well. Maiolo’s coloring paints a noble view of events. This aura steps back as the conflict arrives. Events start picking up as Castilho sees what’s his in trouble. The rage pouring out takes over panels. It leads right into the dramatic close. The parting shot leaves more questions to ponder as the leader’s true intentions come to light.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

An impossible task leads Superman into deadly territory in this latest issue. Slott pens a very steady tale of power and control. Albuquerque & Maiolo throw many different looks at the readers via the art. How this will end is anyone’s guess but you won’t want to miss it.

GREEN LANTERN #27 (DC COMICS)

The tide appears to be turning! When Starbreaker and his Sun-Eaters stole all emotion, it took out the Lanterns! This allowed them to run roughshod over the universe. If no one cared, who would stop them.

Due to a small trio of Lanterns, a play was made to the Source Wall. Unleashing the emotion avatars seemed like the jolt needed to fight back. Even with Sorrow’s sacrifice and rings repowered, the fight continues onward.

Adams opens events up with a flashback to a conversation with Jordan and Stewart. Seeing the two old friends converse about the universe is a nice break from the draining drama at play. It doesn’t take long for the present situation to take hold. The desperate race to save Oa pushes pacing. There is an overwhelming feel of doubt. This mood doesn’t stay put on their spaceship in flight.

John Stewart leads the plan to stop Starbreaker’s corps once and for all. Readers watch as the tough decision is made. It shows how Stewart is forced a hand he doesn’t want. This results in an unlikely source of backup. Even with another sub-plot growing, Stewart commands the scenes. His actions have huge ramifications. It leads readers into a new beginning and final goodbye. As odds as that statement is, the view on the final page cements any doubt. There is no turning back now.

Xermánico is back on art duties for this pen-ultimate story chapter. The opening sequence with Stewart and Jordan starts with a fun full page. As much as they stay in the starts, seeing the Earth Lanterns have a quiet moment is a solid move. The flight back to Oa carries a tremendous amount of weight. Emotions are high as the heroes know they won’t make it in time. It is a strong view of events. This only helps add more strength to Stewart’s tough call.

Once Stewart comes to terms with his call, the issue eases into its key points. The two page splash of Stewart’s call to action is a huge move. This only is amplified as more characters appear on page. Readers see the emotional call only get graver as Stewart executes it. Another excellent two page splash conveys its’ impact to the readers. It recharges what fans have been waiting for. There are a few heartfelt panels before the ending commences. A full page shot ushers in a return to normal with perfect timing. The final page reveals what’s going and the end is truly here.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

One Lantern’s tough call leads into a rally cry for the ages in the “Starbreaker” pen-ultimate chapter. Adams’ writing leans into the gravity of the conflict. Xermánico & the art team fill the pages with many fan-favorite moments. This sets the stage for a finale you wont want to miss.

Even in space, the elements of crime never veer off track. A simple space train robbery is normal in these parts of the galaxy. The writing stages the play as a very traditional lead. It doesn’t take long for events to take a turn for the worst. One robber stands out amongst the crowd. Readers watch as he holds court on all those in attendance with force. It shouldn’t take long to decipher who this rogue truly is.

Readers see another character of Bat-lore make their entrance here. The conversation with Pennyworth and Wayne is very classic in delivery. It is one that reveals the self-doubt Batman still carries. Once events jump back, the story leads into the real endgame. Action sequences pick up as all secrets come to light.

Once the villain identity is revealed, the main event begins. Readers watch as the combat is very straight-forward. It leads to a thunderous conclusion. The epilogue teases more of the mystery surrounding the lead. It’s a great compliment to a superb read.

D’Urso and Monti craft some amazong images for this chapter. The space robbery set-up is filled with tension. It never ecapes the reader’s mind of what is happening. A full page shot welcomes the thieves into the scene. This is matched with anothe rfull shot of their leader. The scene pops off as the dialogue moves into their immediate issue. There’s plenty of brutality unloading here. Carey’s lettering makes this panels jump off the pages.

Once the story swings to Batman, the mood heads towards a more reflective phase. The art shows the wear in his face as he contemplates moves. This doesn’t last long as his mission comes back into lead. The action scenes comes fast and energetic. It’s becoming a trademark of this series. The main villain reveal gets a tremendous full page shot. Readers sit ringside as the fight goes full throttle. The art exemplifies the wild action. It caps off with a triumphant full page shot.

Mora and Bonvillain’s epilogue follows this same winning formula. It supports the level D’Urso and Monti established. Readers have much to rave about on each page.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Immortal Legend Batman takes action undercover in its’ latest issue. Higgins and Groom throw ILB into uncharted territory with their writing. The art is phenomenal on every page you turn. There is no sophomore slump here. This Batman story is one that should have your undivided attention.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #12 (MARVEL COMICS)

What a tangled web indeed! Spider-Man disappeared after being brutally beaten by Hellgate. Upon his return, something was noticeably different. Spidey was showing a vicious streak in handling his foes. This same sharp mood was seen in Peter Parker.

Once both parties met, much was explained. That’s not a typo. It was revealed that Ben Reilly was posing as Peter. As for Spidey? It was none other than Norman Osborn! What about Peter? Oh yeah, he’s in space.

This chapter has a more grounded approach than last month. Keeping the story based on Reilly and Osborn helps to fuse their place in this tangled equation. This really helps give Osborn’s new role life. The opening monologue shows how he is dealing with being a hero. Hearing acknowledge the challenges presents a sense of self-doubt. It is very un-Norman like but an effective tactic.

This becomes a larger issue in dealing with another rogue. Their encounter shows how far Norman is trying to hold it together. Readers see how the external demons are the least of his worries. This follows a confrontation of interested parties. Pacing picks up as the action hits. It ends on a very strong note. Kelly reaches back to a connecting plot point. The move eases onto the closing. Once here, a new threat is teased that looks to impact Norman more than realized. Text book cliffhanger finish which helps this chapter.

McGuiness steps in for art duties this go-around. A two page splash shows Norman in action. His heroics are far from flawless. It does add to the questioning dialogue. This gives way to show Reilly some time as Peter. The facial reactions show how Reilly’s performance is starting to crack. The same can be said for Norman’s.

The spider-family crash the scene via half page shot. It leads to a tense conversation. This subsequently rolls into a fight. The two page splash shows Norman holding his own. Even as he battles, the sublime flashbacks are impacting his reactions. None more greater than one in particular. The full page panel stops everything at the drop of a dime. Readers see how far Norman has fallen during the following panels. It leaves events at a standstill before the end. A glimpse into the future leaves the audience with much to ponder when this portion picks back up.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.7

The “Spider-Norman” era experiences some growing pains as past scars resurface. Kelly conducts a look inside a struggling character trying to be good. McGuiness and the team keep things moving with a balance of action and insight. It’s a new day for Spider-Man and fans had better settle in for the ride!

Waid crafts a very high-stakes affair right from the start. Seeing Batman forced undercover leads to questions of denial and doubt. The dialogue with Alfred shows how farthings have slipped out of grasp. It doesn’t defer the attempt to stop “Grimaldi”. The action picks up as Batman swings into action. It exposes a fatal flaw in Grimaldi’s plans. The revelations don’t stop here. Another one takes over the book and haunts to the close.

Readers watch as Batman questions his adopting of Dick Grayson. The Dark Knight watches Grayson have some normalcy. It leads to a self exploration of emotions. Grayson’s reaction is surprising in return. Readers don’t dwell on this aspect for long. Batman wastes no time in trying to take down everyone solo. This is met with mixed results. There is an air of carelessness looming with the attack. Once in the final stages, the errors prove costly. It shifts tones towards a dire direction. The last page shows a glimmer of hope as the truth sinks in: There’s a reason Batman needs a Robin.

Samnee and Lopes bring out the dark side of the new regime with the art. Opening with Batman undercover and running sets an early pace. The interactions with Alfred suggest how costly the failure is. The conflict ends on a more puzzling note. It is all due to another player ready to start his own legacy.

Readers watch as Nightwing Prime swoops in. The moment is brief but causes a domino effect. It also brings in some cooler heads to talk some reason to Grayson. The check in dialogue shows how connected all DCU heroes are. It also drives home how respected Grayson is. Their conversation moves to another vested party. Batman’s time is brief but effective in moving events toward the close.

Watters unloads the drama in the final pages. It serves as another reminder of how Grayson has seen the world. He has been a novice teen hero. Now, he’s a seasoned and tested force. Layman plays up to the quirkiness of this team-up. The re-introduction to Zookeeper is a nice touch. Readers get a full understanding of who he is and why. This moves events along to its’ current dilemma. The writing lets Beast Boy shine while things fall apart. It serves as a solid refresh for his character. As solid as this moment is, it is eclipsed by another.

Cyborg’s heart-to-metal talk with Robotman steals the show. Knowing how very similar these two are allows the Titan to open up. The dialogue hits the major points of what his struggles deal with. Seeing Robotman be a voice of reason strikes a chord with readers. It helps to get the hero back on a positive track. This helps to assist in the main conflict.

The writing stages action very traditionally. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this. These moments come across very well. It allows for a few fun moments to creep in before wrapping events up. Readers watch as the door is left open for more meetings in the future. Once the story goes to close, everything has changed. It is a hard reset lending itself to a larger picture n the horizon. An enjoyable read never the less.

Raynor and Herms set up the Zookeeper sequence with a few different looks. Flashback moments have a varied coloring to the panels. The art leans in on the key reveals before it ends. The final result is a full page image that starts off this issue’s conflict. Readers watch as the heroes converse about best plans. It leads to a solid half page panel featuring a few transformations.

The weight of Cyborg and Robotman can’t be denied in their panels. Vic Stone is clearly impacted by Robotman’s words. They are subtle panels but nail the key points. This moves events to the main fight with the art letting loose. In dealing with changelings, the imagination can run wild. The near full page reflects that view. It helps to compliment the fast action and unique end to the fight. Readers watch as this portion ends on a high note before changing directions in close. The full final page doesn’t pull punches as the next round is taking a bold swing. Get ready.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The Titans/Doom Patrol team-up ends on an entertaining note before more trouble arrives. Layman pens a steady superhero tale with the writing. Raynor and Herms mix in some needed drama in between the action. It is a enjoyable set-up before darker times arrive for the DCU.

THE NEW GODS #10 (DC COMICS)

A New God is missing. Kamal is a young boy with limitless power. His mere presence caused High Father to take drastic actions. This has spiraled into a conflict between Orion and Mister Miracle on Earth.

New Genesis has its own issues. The peaceful planet was attacked by The Nyctari. Lightray was a casualty in the vicious invasion. This caused High-Father and company to seek refuge on Earth. Once here, a traitor has revealed himself. Serifan is working for Maxwell Lord.

They have stolen Kamal with plans to use him as a weapon. This doesn’t bode well for the Fourth World heroes.

The New Gods #10 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Simon Parr, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano continues with its dramatic odyssey.

The world of Serifan is brought front and center for this chapter. Ram V introduces him as a boy heavily influenced by American media. The writing slowly walks through the growing impact of his consumption. It leads to a sense of disillusion in dealing with others. This aura builds up to a heart-breaking present view. there is no question of his longing for the past. Sadly, his future is not looking any better.

The conversation with Maxwell Lord is sharp and unapologetic. It moves into a sad state of affairs with no good end in sight. This is a very big contrast from Orion’s court. The mood features him in his new role as Oathmaker. Readers watch as the adjustments are complicated to take. This moves events forward to try a rescue. Readers get a much needed shot of action as the search gains steam. The writing moves this along before heading back to a looming plot point. In this stage, the mood swings into a dangerous place. The closing page makes a loud statement towards the immediate future. Only time will tell if Orion’s group is ready.

Cagle and Segala takes art duties for the history of Serifan. There are many homages to American history. The usage of panels depicts how the child is absorbing this information. It will be easy for readers to start connecting with these pages. It ultimately leads to a sad farewell panel. Cagle and Segala deliver on the emotional toll taken before handing off duties to Parr.

Readers watch as the talk between Serifan and Lord eludes to much mistrust. The expressions given lead to believe a set-up has occurred, fitting the movie motive. This breaks away to show how Orion and company deal with the situation. The art locks in on Orion’s new role problems. There is little time given here as the action finally starts happening. A near full page shot showcases two heroes fending off much of their opposition. This all moves everything towards the close. The art sets the stage for a showdown in waiting. A full page image screams the danger lying in wait. It may have taken a scenic route, but it appears all roads are finally starting to come together.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

A look into a lost soul leads a heavily travelled issue. Ram V’s writing juggles many plots while continuing to build. Cagle and Segala present Serifan’s past with much sadness and longing. Parr takes the issue home with solid action. There’s no turning back now for where this series is heading.

If you want violence, you got it. The previous three issue builds towards the explosive encounter in spades. Thornwall’s long play proves to work as she seems to have Spawn where she wants him. The writing sets an unforgiving pace. There is no brakes for where this all leads. The combat holds nothing back. It mirrors what sacrifices Thornwall has made to get her. The end result is one that throws off the predictable trail.

Readers watch as Spawn takes every blow head on. There is a sense of respect being won as Thornwall attacks. Seeing Spawn acknowledge her skills is a major co-sign. It doesn’t appear to hit that way with Thornwall. The writing plays another hand in this deadly game. It unveils many secrets as their fight progresses. This moves into a unique closing section. Readers watch as a major move stops everything to a screeching halt. It serves as a good pivot to the ending pages. The panels left no doubt the internal conflict of Tasha Thornwall is far from over.

Rosado and Alonso empty the arsenal for this brutal confrontation. The opening pages set up a stunning full page panel. This leads into a ferocious attack by Thornwall. A half page image teases the rage unloading behind her eyes. It showcases a deadly picture. There is never a pause of action in these panels. Every devastating strike is met, blow for blow. The art conveys the heavy weight involving the stand off.

Even as the magical aspect takes hold, the action never falters. There are many shock and awe images popping up in these moments. One point that can’t be lost is how focused Thornwall is in these panels. The art never breaks her expressions even if plans fail. This leads into a thunderous two page splash. Readers see how a desperate play conjours two full page images. This proves impactful as the result finally slows events down. It leans into where the final chapter is slated to go. The art really shined in this portrayal of supernatural chaos.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The long awaited fight between Spawn and Thornwall doesn’t disappoint. Illidge & Sealey conduct the soul crushing duel with an excellent script. Rosado and Alonso gift fans a hellish showdown for the ages. This chapter defines the Spawn Universe’s latest force with a definition of sheer will. Make a point to check this confrontation out!

Bad Blood never goes cold! The Baroness takes a leave of G.I Joe to clear her head. Her break leads her to Paris. Waiting in the shadows is someone who wants an eye for an eye. His name is Major Bludd.

Bludd uses her parents as bait for a trap. After kidnapping her and Cover Girl, he pits them against each other. Using trickery, the Baroness turns the tables. It leaves her one on one against her twisted foe.

Winner. Take. All.

G.I. JOE #11 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Lee Loughridge and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) delivers the high stakes showdown of Bludd vs. The Baroness!

Williamson opens up handling a sub-plot that’s been brewing for a while. The Hound/Clutch “odd couple” serves as a solid build for the Energon Universe. Seeing Transformers interacting more with the Joe side only opens doors for more possibilities. Risk and Mercer’s reactions hit as they both have to process what this all means. It concludes to a great transition to the main event.

Readers watch as the Baroness and Bludd slug it all out. The tone plays into the insanity of Bludd. This is very comfortable villainy. Bludd’s psychotic state leaves room for the Baroness to fight back. The dialogue is sharp. It resonates the brooding mood to a great climax. At this stage, the fight ends with a brutal twist. It serves as a reminder that the Joes are not always angels. Another element at hand is if the Baroness has truly bought in. The writing teases a few notions before moving to close. Readers see the final page changes events before bowing out. It steadies the ship as a certain war is brewing in the shadows. Another fantastic read.

Milana and Loughridge conclude their Joe time with a few strong takes. The Hound/Clutch story is gifted an exciting two page splash. It instantly sets off the combat as the unlikely trio of heroes step up. The pages carry the high-octane tempo into its’ next phase. This provides readers a easier entry into the books’ major lead story.

The fight between Baroness and Bludd doesn’t disappoint. There are plenty of fast-paced strikes. this compliments Bludd’s insane reactions to his mischief. Even as Raptor and Cover Girl get page time, nothing overtakes the Bludd feud. This ultimately comes to a graphic close. The full page image leaves no wonder as to who won. Even as the story tries showing Destro & Cobra Commander, readers will be buzzing about the ending blow. This works in the closing’s favor. The final page teases more events working in the shadows. Judging by the combat, these moments weren’t going to overtake the emotional fight of revenge. Its’ aftermath will be looming around the Energon Universe as it readies itself for the next phase of stories.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

The final round of Baroness vs. Bludd leaves its’ mark as the Energon Universe continues to expand its’ vision. Williamson’s writing leans heavy into action as more builds. Milana and Loughridge grow a fast pace with their strong art. With more on the horizon, the EU is firing on all cylinders. Don’t miss it.

MARVEL/DC: DEADPOOL/BATMAN #1 (MARVEL COMICS/DC COMICS)

What year is it again?! Marvel Comics and DC Comics have released a NEW crossover! It has been over 20 years since the "Big Two" of Comics pulled off a massive event like this. The last took place in 2003 with "JLA/Avengers".

Since then, both have stayed focused on building up their multi-media brands. That doesn't mean the fans never lost hope of the world colliding again (and without a vote deciding who wins).

Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1 kicks off the next wave of crossovers with two of their heavy hitters!

Let’s take a closer look at how this event fares.

Anytime you bring in Deadpool to a story, it can have mixed results. The character has transcended the normal comic realm into something else completely. When paired with the Dark Knight, Wade Wilson shines in the absurdity of his world. The writing takes them into perfect "frienemy" territory. Wells hits on every punchline that mirrors the Ryan Reynolds portrayal. It is no shock to see how heavily influential that performance goes here.

Readers watch as the insanity of Deadpool caters to more elements of the Bat mythos. It results in a fitting response to the conflict at hand. Batman is written in more of a "Batman: animated Series" tone. There's a fair share of brooding while dancing in the more calmer stages. The fallout gives a solid close to their adventure. It leaves readers with a wide open door for where things *might* go in November.

The other stories are great compliments to the crossover appeal. Zdarsky's Cap/Wonder Woman story is a fun and heartfelt read. Kevin Smith returning to Green Arrow and Daredevil is just like riding a bike. His previous runs on both breathed new life into both characters. Seeing this meeting is a fun nod to those era. Everything else are sure to bring some smiles to fans faces due endless possibilities for more.

Bringing back Capullo for Batman is a fun throwback. Deadpool crashes the scene (literally) via full page image. The art highlights his delusional mannerisms . It offsets the stern, brooding face of Bruce Wayne. Readers see how Bruce burns a hole through Deadpool with each look. This carries over to another meeting of Gotham’s finest.

Batman meets Deadpool via a gorgeous full page image. Having Jim Gordon play referee helps to move the story forward. Each pairing keeps up the tense mood as the true culprit comes into light. Seeing Capullo’s Joker back via full page is another gem in this issue. Their face-off during dialogue pays a small homage to the “Death Of The Family” covers. It pays off to starting a frantic switch of events. Readers will enjoy seeing how Deadpool reacts to certain Batman/Joker confrontation.

The fallout sends everyone home happy. Panels encompass the combustible mix of personalities. It also leaves a few doors open to play a return of more to come. If this is any indication of what's to come, fans are in for something special. Wells leans into the pop culture aspects of the lead characters with the writing. Capullo and the art team shine in bringing Deadpool into Batman's' world. Readers will excited to see each panel unfold. Factor in the other side tales & this event lived up to the hype.

They woke up in an unknown location. The scenery looks like a virtual paradise. Jo gives a sense that this is too good to be true.

The Snyders open events with a close-up of Charlie’s past. The pages carry more detail than the same style in the previous issue. This start deals with the immediate evacuation as the shroud takes hold. Readers watch as her youthful optimism takes hold. It serves a reminder of better times as the issue progresses. The moment leads the audience into its’ new location. From here, a shift in mood is clearly noticed.

The pages carry a lighter feel as the new residency is explored. Seeing the group embrace this new world leaves the door open for possibilities. Readers watch as the group meets more from this oasis. It is huge contrast to Charon’s hunt. The writing shows how determined the evil figure is for his goal. Jo’s group is just absorbing in some possible changes. It leaves the moment with some optimism and joy. This allows for a deceptive build before the ending. Once in the final phases, another curve is thrown into play. Some may think it’s a straight forward ending. With the ever-changing dynamics, “By A Thread” is anything but predictable.

Favoccia and Cogar head back to Charlie’s past for the opening pages. The fear and anxiety is on the evacuees faces. While brief, Charlie’s time on the hills gives a break in the tension at a key spot. The half panel image says goodbye to innocence as the present arrives. Once the rest of the group start awakening in their new place, uncertainty gives way. In its’ place is a happier tone, even in fleeting stages.

Panel set-up allows the exploration images to take center stage. A half page image shows a new animal confronting the group. It is an imaginative take that moves events along. The panels offer a great segway point to Charon’s efforts. Favoccia lets loose on the terror he presents. A half page shot plays out like a horror movie. It steps aside for a full page shot that delivers a powerful statement. As events go for the close, readers watch as each panel teases a possible light in the dark world. It quickly fades with the final page. The chapter closes with a strong full page cliffhanger. Readers will have much to contemplate as they wait for the next chapter to arrive.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

Jo and his friends find themselves in a new location with many problems following their journey. The Snyders welcomes optimism into the cold world via the writing. Favoccia, Cogar & Napolitano balance out the drama with spectacular visuals. Even a diamond’s shine can’t steal the spotlight from this story.

TRANSFORMERS #24 (SKYBOUND/IMAGE COMICS)

In 2023, the Energon Universe was officially born. Spiraling out of the pages of Void Rivals came a return. Transformers had been a familiar staple to comic readers since 1984. The saga of Optimus Prime and company have transcended pop culture. Finding a new home with Skybound, many wondered how this new run would go.

Putting in the hands of one of comics’ best creators was a good indication. Daniel Warren Johnson took the war between Autobots and Decepticons into new territory. Killing off Bumblebee in issue 1 was a huge statement this wasn’t your average “robots in disguise” book.

Twenty Tree issues later, the series has been nothing short of spectacular. Fans have watched as there has been larger than life action, unique perspectives and emotional rollercoasters between man and machine.

Earlier in 2025, it was announced Johnson was leaving the series at #24. Two years of stories come to this moment. Optimus Prime vs. Megatron. The fate of the world goes to the winner.

Let’s take one last ride with the team that redefined those who are “more than meets the eye.”

If anyone was thinking this was going to misfire, they are happily mistaken. The fight between Optimus and Megatron lives up to all hype. It is brutal, unapologetic & amazing all at once. Both warriors know this can only end one way. Even in his weakened state, Optimus remains true to his will of good. Megatron counters with his diabolic thirst for power. There is no line he won’t cross. This shows in the writing. His actions aren’t above reproach.

Megatron uses this to his favor. Readers see how he takes advantage of Prime’s good nature. There are a few challenges thrown into the mix which swings the fight. Johnson plays off this heel tactic perfectly. This leads to a few moments that hit all the marks of Transformers lore. There is no way to read this portion and not have a loud excited reaction. This spirals into another play of something Johnson had been building for a few issues now.

The long term books works to a thunderous turning point. Johnson’s writing staged every aspect out to maximize page time. It results in pushing towards an exclamation on the fight at hand. All roads lead to a bittersweet closing. Readers watch as the post battle calm starts sinking in. The dialogue leaves no doubt of what has transpired. More importantly, it give all something desperately needed to build from: Hope.

Corona, Spicer and Wooten leave it all on the pages for this finale. The full page image of Optimus and Megatron starts everything off in a wild frenzy. Following panels never let up on that energy. This even plays into a transformation mid blow! Throughout this fight, both express different views of this fight. Optimus shows caring for the humans. Megatron is all too happy to kill them to upset Prime. This factors into the stakes at hands.

Another near full shot shows Prime at a weakened point. This sets off an uncomfortable scene. Readers can feel the panic and fear taking over the panels. A two page splash changes the direction of this encounter. It is followed by a full page shot with simple dialogue. A smaller panel follows that changes everything. Knowing what it represents, it spirals into a newfound shot of adrenaline into the combat. A new full page image will have readers on their feet! Pacing hits an all time speed as the fight nears a climax. The fight ends with an unforgettable full page image. This moves everything into the closing pages.

Bittersweet is an understatement for here. Knowing the sheer hell on Earth that occurred, these panels mean so much more. It mirrors the message since issue one. Johnson and company close out with a very simple full page. Readers can’t ask for more of a fitting close.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

Daniel Warren Johnson leaves the series with a magnificent finale. The writing covers the field of emotions with Earth as the backdrop. Corona, Spicer and Wooten deliver a main event showdown second to none. The high level of storytelling is an epic series run that won’t be forgotten. Highest possible recommendation.

SPIDER-VERSE VS. VENOMVERSE #5 (MARVEL COMICS)

It all comes down to this! The Web-Heart & Hive-Mind feel they can’t co-exist. They have selected champions of Spider and Symbiote. Only one can win. Both sides have pushed the other to the breaking point. There’s been betrayals, unlikely partnerships & Mechas all involved (and that’s just for starters).

Now the unified fronts of Spider-Man and Venom must face off with countless reinforcements.

SPIDER-VERSE vs. VENOMVERSE #5 by Mat Groom, Kyle Higgins, Jim Towe, Rachelle Rosenberg and Travis Lanham bring forth the final chapter in this all-time face-off!

One notable aspect of this series is the creative freedom the writing is having. Higgins & Groom keep finding new ways to present both Spidey and Venom. Merging the two via Blood transfusion opens up some doors. This leads into an interesting sequence before the final fight. Readers watch as the pairings take on the competition head on. It’s a throwdown worthy of finale status.

During the wild melee, one character stands out. The writing allows Eddie Brock to become something he’s struggled with: being a hero. Against his greatest “frenemy”, the conversation gives Brock validation on what he is doing. It is a moment that shifts everything. This pushes towards a very questionable conversation. The dialogue presents its case with little pushback. It serves as a solid landing spot for the conflict and overall plot. The fallout leaves many doors (and in one case aspirin) open to explore. It is a great ending to what has been a very fun read to experience.

Towe & Rosenberg open up with a welcome to an unlikely lead. The image of Spider-Venom is an amalgam of both which tips off the direction of the story. This jumpstarts the action as the final battle commences. There’s plenty of action to go around. Readers will enjoy all the mix and matches of combatants. Seeing Spider-Venom hyper uppercut Spider-Hulk is a prime example of this brawl for all.

Once Brock’s side is slipping, a huge back-up crashes the scene. The full page image is impressive and wild in the same breath. This allows for Brock to connect with a weakened Peter Parker. Watching the acceptance of his role, Brock’s confidence starts picking up. The images lock in on the painful history between both. Its’ fallout starts the closing off on a good note. The move throws a proposal into conversation. This results on impacting the parting images. The final page teases where this all may go form here. At worst case, it sends readers home on a pleased note.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The final face-off between Spider & Symbiote delivers on the action! Higgins & Groom takes readers along for an unlikely redemption story. Towe & Rosenberg present the huge conflict with exciting displays. The Spider-Man/Venom mythos takes a fun turn fans don’t want to miss!
