The DCU hasn’t seen him since their encounter during the JLU announcement. Since then, he has disappeared into his twisted world known as “The Absolute Universe.” The JLU has had their own issues to deal with. After “We Are Yesterday” broke the timestream, it opened a dangerous door. Guess who’s coming back for another round?

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #11 by Mark Waid, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Tamra Bonvillain & Ariana Maher unveils a race against time like never before!

Let’s take a closer look at how events are playing out.

Waid sets a high speed pace from page one and never looks back. Seeing the Parademon invasion strike creates a horrific setting. Watching Mr. Terrific screaming for help only adds to the explosive scenarios. It is tough to comprehend how the League is on the defensive with their expansive line-up. The writing clearly establishes how the threat is hitting on multiple levels. It leaves no doubt of the peril they are in.

Even when the story moves to Markovia, the losing sense never strays too far. Watching Darkseid’s legion in action teases what evil lies ahead. Seeing the corruption of Captain Atom and Power Girl unfold makes a loud statement. Readers sense the sub-plot forming before all eyes switch back to the Watchtower. Peeling back the layers on Terrific’s confidence opens up a few directions. It leads to a strong close with more looming overhead. The final image is very familiar as the dark times for the DCU heroes are about to get a whole lot worse.

Di Giandomenico steps in for Mora on art duties. Keeping the breakneck speed of attacks is no easy fear. The panels capture the desperate attempt at escaping. It leads into a fantastic full page image of the attempt to save Doomsday. This sense of urgency follows the Markovian team as they fight the absolute Legion. Little details like Captain Atom’s painful eyes magnify each blow. Even as the team is being seduced by power, their expresses hone in on the danger at hand.

Readers watch as this all unfolds while the Watchtower hope is crashing badly. The action scenes are pouring with huge energic looks. There is a small sense of horror capping them off. It matches the fear in Terrific’s face until the conclusion. A dynamic full page image brings the house down. This leads into a somewhat slower closing. There isn’t much time to pause as the final page exemplifies the terror lying in wait. It’s a solid lead in for what is sure to be an unforgettable event.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The League is being overrun on their home turf with no escape in sight! Waid constructs a combustible stand-off with excellent writing. Di Giandomenico & Bonvillain deliver on huge action while unveiling the true terror ahead. This series never ceases to impress with its’ large roster of legends.
