DETECTIVE COMICS #1101 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janin, and Wes Abbott (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor welcomes a horror element into this very engaging start. The flashback sequence of a young boy foretells the fear of the Bat. It moves to present time where the dire scene keeps expanding with each action. Having Batman monologue a water rescue clues the audience into the details he watches. Even with all his training, few things can prepare him for what he finds.

The writing doesn’t hold back on the horrific scene. 41 dead bodies is quite terrifying. Watching Batman break down how each victim was killed sparks some curiosity. He does discover a message that leaves the audience in shock. Taylor throws in a few more twists before taking the book to close. The problem is of such a level, Batman needs help. A guest star lends some knowledge into the mix while dropping another reveal on the way out. A fantastic start to a new mystery.

Janin returns to art duties after a few issues off. His art locks on the fear aspect of the flashback opening. The vision of a monster Batman via full page shows the impact of Bat’s presence. Readers watch as the events time jump to a tragic sight at hand. Batman’s underwater rescue adds a bit of excitement in before the terror sinks in.

The full page view of the dead bodies stops the show on a dime. It spares no expense on drilling home what horrific scene has taken place. Janin’s attention to detail showcases the scarring and sickness of the victims. Batman’s stern demeanor never breaks until he finds a message left for him. The full page warning takes no chances as it leaves its mark. This moves events into a faster pace. The closing pages brings in the guest with urgency. Readers see the plot unveiled with a solid full page close. Another solid visual experience that is sure to please.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

Batman’s worst fear might have become a reality in this opening chapter. Taylor layers elements of horror throughout the search for clues. Janin delivers stunning art that only amplifies an already incredible read. This has all the makings for a legendary case.
