GREEN LANTERN #27 (DC COMICS)

The tide appears to be turning! When Starbreaker and his Sun-Eaters stole all emotion, it took out the Lanterns! This allowed them to run roughshod over the universe. If no one cared, who would stop them.

Due to a small trio of Lanterns, a play was made to the Source Wall. Unleashing the emotion avatars seemed like the jolt needed to fight back. Even with Sorrow’s sacrifice and rings repowered, the fight continues onward.

Now the threat looms to the planet of the Green Lantern Corps: Oa. Are they ready for what’s next?

Let’s take a closer look at where events stand now!

Adams opens events up with a flashback to a conversation with Jordan and Stewart. Seeing the two old friends converse about the universe is a nice break from the draining drama at play. It doesn’t take long for the present situation to take hold. The desperate race to save Oa pushes pacing. There is an overwhelming feel of doubt. This mood doesn’t stay put on their spaceship in flight.

John Stewart leads the plan to stop Starbreaker’s corps once and for all. Readers watch as the tough decision is made. It shows how Stewart is forced a hand he doesn’t want. This results in an unlikely source of backup. Even with another sub-plot growing, Stewart commands the scenes. His actions have huge ramifications. It leads readers into a new beginning and final goodbye. As odds as that statement is, the view on the final page cements any doubt. There is no turning back now.

Xermánico is back on art duties for this pen-ultimate story chapter. The opening sequence with Stewart and Jordan starts with a fun full page. As much as they stay in the starts, seeing the Earth Lanterns have a quiet moment is a solid move. The flight back to Oa carries a tremendous amount of weight. Emotions are high as the heroes know they won’t make it in time. It is a strong view of events. This only helps add more strength to Stewart’s tough call.

Once Stewart comes to terms with his call, the issue eases into its key points. The two page splash of Stewart’s call to action is a huge move. This only is amplified as more characters appear on page. Readers see the emotional call only get graver as Stewart executes it. Another excellent two page splash conveys its’ impact to the readers. It recharges what fans have been waiting for. There are a few heartfelt panels before the ending commences. A full page shot ushers in a return to normal with perfect timing. The final page reveals what’s going and the end is truly here.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

One Lantern’s tough call leads into a rally cry for the ages in the “Starbreaker” pen-ultimate chapter. Adams’ writing leans into the gravity of the conflict. Xermánico & the art team fill the pages with many fan-favorite moments. This sets the stage for a finale you wont want to miss.
