Lemire balances many moving plots through a complicated landscape. Dr. Mid-Nite’s escape from the Injustice Society isn’t without complications. Her showdown with Scandal Savage is short for this round but is a perfect segway to Obsidian. There are many moments in this point that fans will be excited for. One provides a much welcomed return of a classic JSA character. The excitement is quickly doused by the reality of their latest problem.

This moves events back to Alan Scott and his children. Lemire brings out the underlying feelings of “Obsidian” to unlock information. It is a classic supervillain ploy pulled off to perfection. Events shift to the strongest point of the chapter. The dialogue between Yolanda and Khalid after their losses heavily connects with readers. Coming off the emotional unload, Lemire guides events back to the JSA’s potential counter attack. Some plot points are brought together heading into the close. This leads into the shocking final page. The end may be here for the JSA and they’re too late to stop it? Only one way to find out….

Olortegui returns to art duties after a few issues’ absence. The weathered look of despair is clear on Dr. Mid-Nite’s face. Beth’s fight with Savage is short lived but moves plots along. Obsidian’s Labyrinth set-up has a small but effective maze set up in the panels. This is complimented by a solid two page action splash. It allows for a full page image of the classic JSA member to crash the party. The moment allows a lighter mood to hit before the change in direction.

Scott’s talk with his children showcases the sense of failure and loss. “Obsidian’s” reaction mirrors a disappointed child. It gives way to the deeper emotional reflection of Yolanda and Khalid. Wildcat’s guilt pours into each panel. Khalid’s anger is there to match. It lights a spark to move into the closing portion. The art locks in on the desperation to fight back. Everything comes to a close with the final page. The full page image reveals the Injustice Society’s lethal strike. It leaves readers with a feeling of doubt as the heroes react knowing they’re already in danger.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The JSA start mounting a comeback but is it already too late? Lemire sets an impactful stage with the writing. Olortegui and Guerrero construct many looks as the Injustice Society make their final move. This series continues to weave a classic tale for all to enjoy.

GRIM #23 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

When it comes to Jessica Harrow, “ordinary” is never in the equation. Death was destroyed in an encounter with The End. Since that point, no one can die. Being the heir to her father’s throne, Jessica struggles to accept her fate. This has caused many issues. None may be greater than the told taken on her allies.

One makes a tremendous sacrifice to stop Original Sin. This sends Jessica into a confrontation that will either save the day or send it into more peril.

GRIM #23 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS) continues its excellent run with a brand new chapter.

Right from the opening page, one question rings true: “Why does Phillips Hate Eddie?” I’m completely kidding but the opening page hits readers with tremendous force. Sealing a tragic fate opens up the next round in the ultimate face-off. Jessica and The End’s game continues to pose many questions. The writing adds more weight into the multi-layered themes of this series. It also establishes if Jessica can continue to handle the gravity of her destine path.

The End’s challenges make readers deeply think about concepts of the life/death connection. Jessica’s banter with her challenger leads to strong moments. Phillips leaves Jessica very vulnerable to the questions looming. It only endears her more to the audience. Once a choice is made, her path takes a fresh new turn. Many possibilities feel open at this stage. This leaves room for a more surprising epilogue. Judging by who takes center stage, it’s very clear Jessica’s actions have caused a major ripple effect. How this plays out will be exciting to watch.

Flaviano and Renzi deliver on the emotions with Eddie’s fate revealed. Renzi’s coloring takes this to new heights. It quickly transitions to a strong full page of Jessica and The End continuing their game. Seeing Jessica’s pent-up emotions released makes quite the impact. This transitions into the current stat quo problem. The End poses a deep question via full page image. This causes Jessica to react with much pause in her voice.

As the story transitions to a new destination, the questions weight begins to show on both. The art locks in the discovery portion of the answers. This moves the story into a very unique point. Renzi’s light coloring gives away the sense of wonder. The reactions of joy and wonder are written on Jessica’s face. This is a much different place than the epilogue. The final page gives the readers a startling reveal before mic dropping a massive change in Jessica’s world. Time in and time out, this team doesn’t miss.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Jessica & The End take their dangerous game to another level with this latest installment. Phillips poses many threads to the reader with phenomenal writing. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano convey the overwhelming emotions of the struggle at hand flawlessly. There truly is nothing like this series at the comic shops.

ARCBOUND #5 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

The long wait is finally over! It has been since March 2025 since readers have ventured into a unique sci-fi epic. Kai’s revenge mission has taken many turns. Since Xander turned on him, the lifeless soldier’s body was put into an Arc. This new stat quo has put him on a collision course with his former partner.

Along the way, Kai has picked up an unlikely ally. Barnes was hired to take the former Zynitec soldier out. Due to another Xander double cross, the foes have become united. How do they navigate the treacherous landscape now?

ARCBOUND #5 by Scott Snyder, Frank Tieri, Tom Hardy, Ryan Smallman, Frank William and Buddy Beaudoin (Dark Horse Comics) brings forth another action packed chapter.

The opening pages prove to be a calm before the storm. Readers see a familiar face return in a new light. Kyra, Kai’s wife, becomes a major point in his new mission. There is a heightened sense of danger looming. Their mission seems improbable on thought. Breaking into the Zynitec Great Vault is daunting. Knowing this group of four is thrown together worsens their odds. Seeing their ill-fated attempt provides many ingredients for an already combustible plot.

Kai’s plan leads into many traditional set-ups. The writing never loses the importance of the mission. It only takes a break to focus on Kyra’s repercussions. Xander’s devilish ways ooze with every line. The fallout posies a new danger while pieces are falling into place. Once events head back towards Kai’s crew, the action takes over. Readers don’t wait long till the brutality is unleashed. This leads into a very surprising close. A new reveal throws everything in flux as the story takes a dramatic turn. There’s never a dull moment with this series.

Smallman and William open with a more subtle look at Kyra. Her reactions of shock and worry take hold. This carries over to the group boarding the vault. Readers watch as they cover many different emotions before hitting the ground running. Even a quick disposal of two guards has a sense of tension. It is a much different mood than the return to Kyra’s plot.

Xander’s manipulations fall on deaf ears. The art captures his overconfidence. It’s matched by Kyra’s defiance. Even the schemer, a half page panel showcases his insurance plan. Readers watch as the tone goes into familiar territory. A discovery leads into a violent half page panel. Pacing kicks into high gear. A two page splash of violence ushers in the shocking ending. The final page leaves many questions as the near full page unveils a hidden secret. How this plays out is anyone’s guess.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

The best laid plans never go off without a hitch. The writing pushes Kai’s counter attacks into a firestorm. Smallman and company construct the high drama with some surprises along the way. The saga of Kai never ceases to hold readers’ attention as it carves its’ explosive path.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

The Sentinel of Liberty. Star Spangled Avenger. Since his debut in 1941, Steve Rogers has left a legacy unmatched at Marvel. It is hard to believe there was a time he wasn’t frozen in ice. Rogers’ latest series is taking a deep look into those early days and more. Get ready for a new look at the legendary Captain.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 by Chip Zdarsky, Valerio Schiti, Frank Martin and Joe Caramagna delves into his first encounter with an upstart in Latveria.

Let’s not wait another minute and dive into the story.

Zdarsky is no stranger into taking classic characters into uncharted waters. This debut focuses on two main characters. Rogers takes the larger spotlight to start. The initial first days out of ice show his struggles t adjust. Some things just come natural to the super soldier. Jumping in to stop a bomber is vintage Cap. The pace speeds up until its’ solid conclusion. In its’ wake, it leaves a great set-up with a few more cameos.

Readers get a healthy dose of classic Marvel Heroes and their interactions prove entertaining. Seeing Rogers decipher information on his mission leaves a true sense on wonder. Piecing together the uncomfortable new landscape leads Rogers into a new pairing. As previously mentioned, he has someone else to split time with here.

The other lead character is David Colton. Watching the tragic events of 9/11 occur, Colton is inspired to enlist. Much like young Rogers, Colton is not physically able to handle the army. The writing shows the brutality he takes while trying to prove himself. Zdarsky adds more to his backstory while mimicking Rogers. The result teases a creation of something else that veers off the Captain playbook. There’s no delay in setting the bar extremely high right from the start.

Schiti and Martin set a devasting mood early depicting Colton watching the 9/11 attacks. The horror of those terrible events come into focus with tears coming down the young man’s face. The story switches over to Rogers’ plot with a look back into yesteryear. The full page image of Cap cycling into action is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Pages following are non stop action. The event comes to a halt when a certain armored Avenger crashes the scene.

This leads into Cap’s return to service. The art showcases his fighting prowess in training. This training is in stark contrast to Colton’s vicious combat. Rogers run-in with Reed Richards proves to be a show stealer. Seeing the pair talk shop mixed with some hero admiration breaks the mood. This leads into an introduction of new faces. Rogers’ confusion is only growing as he prepares for attack. The final page circles back to Colton and where his future went. Readers will have much to process as this new series is only getting started.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Steve Rogers’ “return” issue to the MCU isn’t without complications of past and present. Zdarsky constructs a tale of two people with the writing. Schiti and Martin present the unapologetic reality of both with superb art. Get ready for an unforgettable ride.

SUPERMAN #27 (DC COMICS)

The Man of Steel is infected! With Red Kryptonite consuming him, Superman is loosing control. Marilyn Moonlight has arrived on the scene to stop him. Looming in the shadows is Lex Luthor. There is a bit of unfinished business with some enemies who have orchestrated attacks against him. Someone is not going to make it out unscathed from this one.

SUPERMAN #27 by Joshua Williamson, Sean Izaakse, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher brings down the house on the “Supercorp” team!

Let’s not wait any longer and dive into the action.

If you have been reading this series since issue #1, this is a monster payoff issue. Anyone jumping in recently will still feel its’ after effects. Williamson opens events with the recently depowered Lois Lane. Readers don’t wait long for her “reunion” with an old friend. The guilt from her heroic actions start pouring with each line. It’s quickly upstaged by the main event. Considering it’s a raging Superman, the move is very understandable.

Moonlight’s injection into the storyline is met head on. Seeing Superman struggle for control immediately pushes events into a conflict. The writing hides the true catalyst until its’ time for the reveal. Readers see a new side of an old enemy. Willaimson keeps things close to vest for true motives. Once a play is made, it thrusts everything into short combat. The fallout picks up for the lack of fighting. It is a reset of sorts. Williamson puts a few plots back in a normal setting before going full speed into the close. With a build over the last few issues, the epilogue brings forth a Collison in the making since last year. Brace for the oncoming impact.

Art duties are once again split throughout this issue. Barrows opens up with a grounded look at Lane’s post heroic life. The near full image of Jimmy Olsen’s return lightens up the mood slightly. It ultimately gives way to a strong two page splash. Readers easily see Superman’s fight against the red rage. His mannerisms speak loudly as the battle starts.

Another two page splash ushers in the big fight for the chapter. Pharm and Graff’s plans come off as maniacal as they are. Luthor’s shadowy close-up is chilling as his words dictate the moment. Readers watch as the bold panels wrap up events rather fast. It leaves time to drop a classic Clark & Lois image flying before reality crashes back. The epilogue pages cement a darker future on the horizon. It is a solid parting shot as a new dangerous showdown is forthcoming.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The relationship between Superman and Lex Luthor takes another detour as rage sets in. Williamson sums up plot points from the beginning of his run. The art team construct a steady vision of a connection redefined. Brace for what is coming with the epilogue.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLMITED #8 (DC COMICS)

It all comes down to this. The Justice League has been on the defensive since Inferno arrived. Even with the unlimited line-up, the DCU heroes have been thwarted easily. It became no surprise why as the group was revealed to be the Legion Of Doom!

Led by Gorilla Grodd, the time-displaced group is on the cusp of total victory. The only thing stopping them has been their own devious egos. Their over-confidence has allowed a fallen JL member one last shot to stop them. Can the past, present and future of good conquer evil once and for all?

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #8 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Dave Sharpe concludes the “We Are Yesterday” Crossover event!

When you think of the amount of characters involved, anything less than Epic doesn’t work. Waid swings hard for the fences and makes contact. In dealing with the time-travel aspect, it is tricky. However, that is a secondary thought. This chapter is all “Hollywood summer blockbuster” action. It also gives readers proper closure of nearly a year of the new and flawed stat quo of the JLU.

• Editor Note: It will help readers if they have read or are familiar with events in Justice League: the Atom Project and Superman. It’s not necessary but does enhance a few key points.

Seeing the various interactions of characters past, present and future works flawlessly. There are plenty of moments between rivals that are given a fun twist. They all step aside to let one hero get a redemption story. Air Wave has been the unlikely catalyst for much of the League’s wins and losses. Readers watch as he finally has his proper spotlight to face off with Grodd. The fallout is more reflective of how imperfect this initiative is. Even with the deep line-up, things are not finished without consequence. Readers watch as this point is thrusted into a unique epilogue. One event has concluded. Another one has only just begun.

Mora returns to art duties and it’s a perfect fit for the ending. Opening up the issue with a full page Legion shot is one thing. Following it up with an incredible two page splash is net level. Readers will be caught up instantly in the huge throwdown. The art sneaks in many cameos of fan favorites. This is a great balance to Grodd’s growing rage. Seeing his plans implode, each panel locks in on his mounting rage.

Even as Grodd unleashes his final play, a full page shot brings in the last line of defense to stop him. Mora and Bonvillian ramp up the pace for a truly escalading sequence. there’s plenty of emotion showcased in Wave’s actions. It leads into a more calm conclusion. Readers see as one JL member refuses to accept what happened. It helps to create the parting mood for the final image of the crossover. The epilogue is simple but teases another story brewing for a few months now. There’s no rest for the weary in this universe.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

“We Are Yesterday” ends on an electrifying note. Waid pens a high-action match-up for the ages. Mora’s amazing imagery takes over, giving the larger than life crossover a fitting send-off. This event has lived up to its’ billing and then some.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #4 (DC COMICS)

Can you handle the heat? That is the question being posted in the Absolute Universe breakout hit. John Jones and the Martian have been tested early. Their partnership has put them on the trail of the White Martian. It has also caused Jones a breakdown of his family life.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #4 by Deniz Camp, Javier Rodríguez and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou puts the unlikely duo in the hot seat as a heat wave takes over Middleton.

Let’s take a closer look at where events land now.

Camp continues to redefine the mythos of the Manhunter. As he assesses the situation, he finds more than bargained for. Using the heatwave as a cover is a very unique notion. The writing doesn’t shy away from the gritty aspects of the White Martian’s influence. It paints a disturbing picture that only grows. Readers watch as it turns out that is not the only grave challenge standing in front of Jones.

Bridget Jones steps into the spotlight for this chapter. Her frustrations with John come to a full-on implosion. Camp has been slowly building this over the chapters. It provides a monster pay-off. the dialogue is a stark view of a shattered relationship. The dialogue doesn’t hide Bridget’s pain. It elevates it into an inescapable level. Even with John trying to make headway, it falls flat. With how intense these pages get, it goes without saying how flawed John is as a character. This leads into the closing page. Events come full circle as more gas is thrown on an already combustible landscape.

Rodríguez continues to spotlight his skills with this series. The opening page involving the sun is eye catching. Coloring takes the scene to new heights. It makes the moment pop before heading into Bridget’s start. The use of Otsmane-Elhaou lettering brings out a deeper understanding of Jones’ wife. Only when the heat wave terror takes hold does the art shift. Readers see how the city is exploding with rage. The yellow coloring drives that point home before giving the spotlight back to Bridget.

Arguably, the strongest points of this chapter belong to their fighting. The grey and white tones reflect how empty she is inside. Even with the Martian watching inside John’s eye, nothing defers from her anger. The “Mind-Blowing” (literally) near full page speaks volumes. It offers readers a glimpse of how far Johns has slipped. Once events snap back into reality, coloring swings gears into a new path. It echoes a return to normalcy. The time is fleeting as the final page hits. Readers are left with little doubts on what is the endgame here. Another stellar chapter that keeps raising the game.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.4

Love doesn’t live here anymore. That is the message driven into readers as the Middleton heatwave sinks in. Camp pens an emotionally driven chapter with the writing. Rodríguez & Otsmane-Elhaou craft a visionary look at the chaos brewing with the art. There’s nothing like this experience on the shelves at the LCS!

VOID RIVALS #20 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

Say it ain’t so! The partnership between Darak and Solila is over?! Readers have watched the Agorrians and Zertonians struggle for Unity finally start breaking. With a window to finally make it happen, the pair has new problems in front of them. Family always complicates matters….

VOID RIVALS #20 by Robert Kirkman, Conor Hughes, Patricio Delpeche and Rus Wooton presents quite the dilemma for the fate of the Energon Universe.

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now.

Kirkman delivers on a very straight-forward chapter. After last issue’s Skuxxoid detour, the lead pair are at odds. The question of Unity has never been closer to answer. Dulin’s defiance to his son’s request to stop and listen turns into a brawl. Solila lets loose in a very lop-sided affair. Her focus never waivers from her cause. This brings Dulin back into her path. Their opposite mentalities leads into a larger surprise at hand.

Darak’s loyalties are put to the test. The dialogue reflects his hesitancy in acting. Readers watch as he is clearly outmatched. This leads into a more calmer resolution. Mind you, this is after Solila handles business yet again for Zerta. The other side plots with Skuxxoid and Akronus provide small breaks into the drama. In the end, it all falls back on the original pair. The closing pages throw another dynamic into play. How that all will work is anyone’s guess but fans will be here for the ride.

Hughes Starts off with a great deal for fast action. Solila’s skills are on full display. The panels reflect her intense combat. Her face-off with Dulin is an instant win with readers. Neither refuse to back from their stance. Their reactions indicate nothing else. The mood is tense, esp. knowing how high the stakes are.

This leads into more conflict. Darak’s attempts to slow Solila down prove in vain. Readers watch as he is out-classed at every move. This moves into a larger brawl with Dulin’s forces. The art shows off her brutal skills as the stand-off is finally halted by words. Each character’s resolve to settle this argument is on display. It moves events into the closing stages. Hughes and Delpeche bring in a new player via near full page. This results into a very dire situation for the group. How the pitch for Unity goes from here is literally anyone’s guess.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The unified pair of Darak and Solila deal with a fractured bond in their latest chapter. Kirkman sets the stage for a tough decision with the writing. Hughes and company let Solila loose for excellent action sequences. The Energon Universe keeps speeding ahead with another great issue.

ROGUE SUN #28 (IMAGE COMICS/MASSIVE-VERSE)

Sibling rivalry has rarely been like this. Dylan Siegel has been Rogue Sun since his father died. His half-sister Aurie Bell has always felt she should have be the heir. With help from Caleb Hawthorne, Aurie has acquired a Sun Stone.

With Noxious on the rampage, the two heroes try working together to stop him. Easier said that done. His latest attack left Aurie and Dylan at odds. Did I also mentioned the falling elevator and person inside?

ROGUE SUN #28 by Ryan Parrott, Nick Cotton, Abel, Bruno Frenda, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey jumps back into the growing pains for the Bell/Siegel connection.

Let’s take a closer look at where events play out.

Events start with a very polarizing Marcus Bell. Seeing his children struggle with the mantle gives solid insight. It doesn’t take long to head back into the falling elevator. Readers see how fast the two have to work. The dialogue shows how they get through but not without some lingering feelings. This falls primarily on Aurie. Being the new hero on the block proves too much. It also leaves a different impression on Marcus.

Even after the Mourningstar break, Marcus’ actions show a side rarely seen. The writing doesn’t shy away from this point. Marcus has never been “Dad of The Year”. Readers see him try making amends. His methods are a bit unorthodox but lead to some thrilling action. The writing also throws in a solid curve into the straight-forward villain. This also gives time for Dylan and Aurie to sort out their business. They will need if judging by the close. The looming eerie sense can’t be shaken as someone is lurking. Luck has been on their ide thus far. How long till it runs out?

The art starts off with the full page shot of the Suns in action. A daring rescue attempt is fueled by a fast pace. The pain Dylan is experiencing screams through the rogue fire. It leads to a quieter moment of Aurie. The demeanor indicates her questioning if she’s cut out for the business. Marcus’ stern response is written on his face. He knows the dangers ahead and looks to intervene.

The pair’s dive into Noxious’s back story uncovers a troubled soul. Panels lock in on the tragic fate that led him down this path. It leads into a strong argument of morals between the young heroes. This moment is quickly overshadowed by Marcus handling a notable problem. A full page image brings his fight into the spotlight. The closing moments tease a dire future ahead. A great full image showcases the terror below. This point is driven home on the last page. Seeing who the next victim might be only enhances this conflict. Suffice to say, the Suns have their hands full.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

Rosenberg juggles many points in this chapter. The meeting with Dante and Rook is a true battle of wits. Their back and forth is met with an explosive end. Once events catch up to present, readers see a devastating fallout from last chapter. Annalise’s world is forever changed. Through the chaotic mess, the writing demonstrates a sense of caring in-between the mounting drama. It’s perfect dialogue as the bond between robot “dad” and daughter continues to bloom.

The story doesn’t escape the quirky charm it thrives in. Annalise’s arm situation is prime example. Readers watch as the moment moves into a more dangerous place. Once Rook makes his way to confront Annalise, the tempo picks up. There is plenty of great action going down. Events wrap up suddenly as the story transitions to another aspect. More of Annalise’s past starts being peeled back. Heading into the close and Rosenberg throws in a few more surprises. It leaves events on a strong cliffhanger. Another impressive issue indeed.

Landini and Wordie bring out the one-upmanship early for this edition. The full page image of Rook getting the drop on Dante sets the pace. Events start moving fast through the flashback. In the present, the fallout from the explosion takes focus. Readers watch as Annalise comes to terms with what’s happened. It is much thrown on her shoulders as their plans hit a small detour.

The art gives a break of the drama to give the young girl a “normal” moment. Her interaction with the young kids in town provides a fun pause in the drama. It doesn’t take long for this to disappear. The fight between Rook and the Robot is unapologetically brutal. Its’ nine panel page set-up keeps readers locked in until the abrupt end. Once the story goes towards the close, more of Annalise’s truth comes to light. Panels reflect the shocking wonder of what’s being said. It leads into a few tough panels before the parting shot. The full page image brings the house down on another fantastic chapter.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.4

Annalise’s broken world gets some repairs as her mystery grows. Rosenberg’s writing doesn’t skip a beat with its’ excellence. Landini and Wordie bring out the deep drama amongst the big action. This series continues to be ones fans can’t possibly afford to miss.

Coming off a huge return, this chapter is more grounded towards Peter’s life. The opening monologue is back to basics. It is a soft intro before Spidey’s night begins. After saving a Senator, business moves to his new job. The writing makes Rand Enterprises seem too good to be true. It allows for a few side plots to start forming. One of which carries a real threat behind it.

Readers see the return of Tombstone into Peter’s life. Knowing what has gone down in recent past issues, this felt like a sudden move. It buys time before another familiar face returns. Kelly’s writing allows Black Cat to steal some scenes along with detouring Peter’s time with Shay. The move carries through to the closing portion. Once here, Peter finds out there’s someone new in his way and any peace might have just faded away.

Romita Jr is back on art duties for this story. The action sequence with the Senator sets a good pace to roll with. It results in a classic full page of a Victorious Spider-Man swinging. The story moves events to Rand’s work. The art reflects the seriousness of the time along with some humor. Any “The Last Of Us” fans will appreciate the knod. Even with Tombstone’s cameo, the mood feels very upbeat. It’s a notable difference from last arc.

The fallout from Hobgoblin continues to be solid. Aunt May and Shay’s portions mirror those events and the distance it has caused. Readers will enjoy seeing Felica crash the scene. Her expressions shine in her devious grin. It works a classic Spidey feel into these pages. Once their time moves to investigating, the mood instantly tenses up. With everything seeming to be simple, the end throws that out the window. A two page introduction piece spells disaster for the Wall-Crawler. So much for down time indeed.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

The latest ASM arc starts with a reflection of a “Happier” time for Mr. Parker. Kelly switches gears with a more grounded look via the writing. Romita Jr & the art team mix in a traditional vibe with a new villain ready to make some noise. Peter is back to basics & that’s a win for everyone.

Their methods are cold but leave a promise of immortality. Knowing how dangerous this can be, the Dark Knight has them right in his sights. Taking them down won’t be easy. It may call for a miracle when his new partner here is the Penguin!

Taylor throws together a unique trio for this latest outing. Having Penguin added into the field is an easy way to tensions to rise. His dialogue is perfect for balancing out the chase at hand. Cobblepot has his own reasons of interest. Seeing the conflicts with Batman’s way provides the start of a thrilling chapter.

There is also a fair share of secrets revealed. Seeing the beginnings of Exilir come to life offers more into their latest plans. One character that steals the chapter is Harvey Bullock. Taylor’s writing unloads a few new sides of the character. It leads into some thrilling action sequences. The closing sets up an interesting direction. Knowing Batman has gotten himself deep in a hole, it should be an easy out. The last page proves that’s the farthest from the truth. It’s a shocking end to a very engaging chapter.

Garbett and Loughridge kick things off with a great leaping Batman image. The near full page panel unveils the new pairing’s unlikely team-up. Penguin’s mannerisms are a solid break from Batman’s brooding. The art sneaks in a fun segment in-between the drama. Batman’s thought of leaving Penguin has a smaller panel scale, but hits the mark.

Bullock’s time comes with great intensity behind it. His facial expressions in the face of danger show how committed he is to win. Once the Bat and the Penguin arrive, the pace picks up. A fantastic two page splash bring in the action. It leads into a strong closing page. Once an action is taken, it throws everything off course. The last panel is a true reflection of reader reaction as the story concludes.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The mystery of Elixir causes an unlikely trio in the process. Taylor’s writing escalates the conflicts at hand. Garbett and Loughridge bring out the best between all parties with the art. If the last page is any indication, readers are in for a treat with this story.

McCreery doesn’t delay in setting up the next challenge in waiting. Readers see how Saoirse is going to be deeply challenged. It is a strong move that has larger implications later. In the immediate present, the story showcases a happier point for Saoirse, Brahm & Hugh. Considering what they just went through, the moment is a welcomed change of pace.

The dialogue isn’t scared to address some of the darker moments of last arc. A prime example of this is Brahm missing his eye. Hugh’s off commentary draws the ire of Saoirse It leads into showing the family bond that has been a strength of this series. Even when new characters swing through, that sense never leaves. It actually becomes a catalyst for the close. McCreery mixes in new reveals along with a deep conversation with Nan to appease the curiosity. This boils into a strong ending. Seeing where the group now heads leaves the audience excited for more. What else could readers want?

Glass and Nesterenko delve into the darker side of magic with the opening pages. The art makes a bold decree as events start taking shape. It transitions into a more light-hearted moment. Hugh’s never-ending grin sets the standard for these panels. Even with his bad joke, the scenes never stay too stagnant or weighing the mood down.

This sense moves into the newest character introduction. The half page panel pops as Brahm makes the discovery. It is accompanied by a few action scenes. Readers watch as Saoirse’s growth with powers is crystal clear. Seeing this new character transform is broken down in a great panel sequence. Nan’s conversation with Saoirse is a show stealer. Mixing in flashbacks with the emotional toll, readers won’t help but be wrapped up. This momentum pushes towards the closing page. The toll that COBRA is taking on G.I. Joe is massive. After their initial Energon Universe encounter, there were losses. None greater than Rock N’ Roll. This has caused Duke to ramp up training for a team that clearly wasn’t ready. That mindset isn’t bought in by the whole team. The one leading this charge: The Baroness!

No rest for the weary. Williamson opens up with a simple training exercise. The mood is instantly tense. It will give readers a double take before revealing its’ true nature. Duke’s message is very blunt and direct. He’s not taking the encounter with Cobra lightly. The dialogue remains with this same energy as he meets with Clutch. With recent events, their conversation is covering up quite a few things. It doesn’t take long before the spotlight swings to the Baroness.

At first glance, she just wants time away. Knowing how high tensions are, a break makes perfect sense. Williamson conveys the problems tied into the break. Even when she arrives at her destination, it isn’t without strings. Readers watch as the real reason comes into focus. The moment is bittersweet as events transpire. It wouldn’t be G.I. Joe without some action. The closing moments bring forth a new challenge that is a lock for fireworks.

Milana and Loughridge kick things off with a feverish pace. The full page image of Baroness in the rafters kickstarts the intense drill. There is a small touch of fun thrown in the serious business at hand. The mood changes completely as Duke enters the scene. Readers watch as his driven persona jumps off panel. It complements the Cobra segway. Both sides have similar yet different stances. In the end, this is all about the Baroness defying orders.

Her conversation with Duke transitions into a new look for the character (& her companion). The art flourishes when the setting becomes Paris. Baroness’s attempts for a peaceful break speaks of a deeper meaning. Her revelation to her wanting a break connects with the readers. The panels give way to the terrifying close. Wooton’s lettering leads the charge into another debut. The full page image of a classic character sets events in motion to a showdown in waiting. It’s another day at the office for one of comic’s best series.

You can take the Joe out of action, but never the action out of the Joe. Williamson shows a new side of the Baroness with the writing. Milana, Loughridge & Wooton take readers on a captivating journey via the art. There’s never a question on the high level quality you get with this series.

Kirkman never lets the Beast’s savagery leave the pages. The opening sequence moves into familiar territory. The writing displays the mounting frustration at hand. With Salaka’s injection, the story takes a new direction. This is well-paired with the ship computer banter. At no point does Beast come across as endearing. He is literally the furthest from that notion.

The journey takes him into an unwelcoming situation. Blood Games provides everything the marquee would suggest. At this stage, the writing plays it very direct. The fighting is what Invincible fans know and love. The aftermath doesn’t give many good feelings. Readers watch as Beast’s true emotions start forming. It leads into a escalated closing. Kirkman throws in one more explosive point before concluding events. It sets the stage for a more worthy opponent that witnessed thus far. Long live the quest.

Ottley and Leoni go bold for the true fire in the Beast. Each close-up of Beast’s face reveals the plotting and scheming he’s brewing. Salaka’s bargaining only works so far. The images capture the deal in hand. A near full image shows Beast reveling in his wins. This causes a change in play before coming back full circle.

Heading into Blood Games feels very stat quo for Beast. The art puts Beast right where fans want. A near full page showcases Beast in all his bloody glory. This all leads into Ottley’s specialty. The fighting at hand is classic Invincible. Another excellent full page shows Beast asserting his presence in the combat. This ushers in a tension filled conclusion. Readers see how Beast’s attitude has pushed away others. This is no exception with the ending’s twists. The reaction to the parting words speaks louder via Beast’s eyes. Rest assured, the body count will only grow from here.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.7

For this chapter, Beast’s mission took a detour into Blood Games. Kirkman’s writing sets up many moving parts. Ottley and the art team manifest some brutality in between the explosive personalities in play. The best parts of Invincible show no signs of slowing down in this series.

This is arguably the most “Superhero”-esque issue to date. Seeing the League’s involvement plays well to finally give a pay-off for their involvement. V’s writing teases more string-pulling form one notable character. There is some deep diving which helps to truly cement his role here. That said, there are two major elements of this issue that jump out.

The first is the government involvement in this challenge. Readers watch as they difference of opinion strikes a few character wrong. This leads into one taking the full front lead. Who would have thought a human would be the voice of reason above gods? It results in an unlikely set-up for New Genesis refugees.

The second is a grieving portion for Lightray. V weaves the fabric of loss into the eqation perfectly. Readers watch as a guard is let down for huge emotions. There is little time to absorb the moment. The last page teases more problems circulating. How this will all play out is anyone’s guess.

Moore takes over the cameo section here. His art welcomes in the League into the conflict. Cagle steps in and gives a dramatic flare to the Gods arrival on earth. The smoky shadows of the JLU pop off the near full page. There is plenty of reactions at this stage. Seeing the set-up versus the government carries anger and resentment. It is quickly subdued by a hero’s actions. Cagle locks in on the frustration while spinning the positives.

The grieving section previously mentioned hits the mark. Seeing the one character finally break down at the loss is overdue. Each panel here conveys the shock of what has happened. Even as the mood is lowered here, a shot of kindness spins the chapter. The closing page leaves no doubt of more problems on the way. It’s never a dull moment with the art on display.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The New Gods have made their way to Earth, but at what cost? Ram V’s stellar writing fluctuates between a vast cast of characters. Moore and Cagle usher in the JLU’s appearance with strong art. Only time will tell where events lean into with a future uncertain.

This solidifies where his latest moves take him.

Meeting with Jim Gordon is a tale of two sides. Their partnership gives way to a family perspective. Readers watch as the calm moment succeeds to a larger game at play. Waid elevates the pacing as Grimaldi strikes the Waynes. The conflict mirrors the struggle of being “Bruce Wayne”. For this chapter, another character takes the stage. Grayson is written as a true student to Wayne’s teachings. This results in a thrilling action sequence. It ultimately spirals into a unique landing spot. Knowing how high stakes have become, the closing pages set the stage for an epic confrontation in waiting.

This leads into an excellent full page image. It becomes the set-up for a stunning full page entrance for Batman into the conflict. The fallout steers readers into a definite close. Readers know that the end in near and it spells danger across the board.

The tables are turned on the Dynamic Duo as trouble comes home. Waid’s writing spotlights the deeper bond between the two. Samnee and Lopes amplify the tension as the hunt is on! All roads start their path towards the sensational finale in waiting!

The rock is all Kryponite! Kal-El saves the day but with a heavy cost. Months have gone by when he wakes up. A true nightmare is in effect. The deadly element is in abundance in the wrong hands. Fighting for Truth, Justice & a Better Tomorrow just became more complicated. Plus, why is Superman turning Gold?

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #2 by Dan Slott, Rafael Albuquerque, Marcelo Maiolo and Dave Sharpe follows Kal-El on his new stat quo.

Slott has shown early in this run that he’s not worried about shaking up the mythos. The Daily Planet has gone over a transformation of its own. This leads into an expose into El Caldero’s President Castilho. Readers watch as Lois Lane hits her journalistic stride as she delves into his new city. Even with a brief skirmish, the overtones of something more dangerous can’t be denied.

The story shifts gears with a surprise guest star. Seeing Jack Ryder (and his alter ego) interject an unpredictability into the standard build. Events shift into a more traditional setting. Slott’s set-up showcases an insight into Superman’s “Golden era”. Readers watch as the new dynamic looks as a blessing in the conflict. The narrative quickly changes with a random action. From here, the dominos start falling around Supes. it leaves many questions moving forward. Judging by the closing page, time is not looking like it’s on his side.

Albuquerque & Maiolo opens up with the El Caldero unveiling. There’s a sense of nobility hovering around Castilho. The art carries him with that stance while Lane digs into the truth. Even as a brief attack takes place, the mood doesn’t sway. This carries to his parting words before events head back to Metropolis.

Ryder is introduced to the story with a strong first page. The art focuses on his struggle to keep control. It doesn’t take long for that to give way to his alter side. Each panel shows the contrast in personality as Superman stops a crime. The action revs up vintage themes. Readers watch as the new factor of Kryptonite changes the norm. The images show the unconventional fallout on a large scale. This leads into a striking final page. The full image leaves no doubt events are only going to go from bad to worse now.

Superman’s challenges to adapt take center stage as the Kryptonite King starts his reign. Slott throws many swerves into the mix with the writing. Hope is fading fast for Earth. Megatron has united the waring Decepticons. His forceful methods have sent a clear message. This doesn’t bode well for a wounded Autobots front. Running on fumes, they have to find a way to stop the new wave of terror. Optimus Prime has faced adversity in the past, but nothing like this.

Johnson is weaving a few key side plots in before starting the main event. The Ultra Magnus portion teases a new element in the human/robot stance. Readers watch as the broken Autobot prepares for the unknown. It echoes the desperation on Cybertron. All parties know how high the stakes are. Deseperate times call for desperate measures.

That statement can be the motto for the rest of the book. In mere moments, the writing kicks into high gear with action. Johnson sets a fast pace as the showdown starts. Both sides take their best shots. The fight only breaks when a dark reveal comes to light. It is a huge payoff for something set in motion months ago. This leads into a dramatic close. Even when there’s an off chance to turn things around, Megatron stays two steps ahead. The chapter closes with a simple statement that couldn’t be more true. Readers will have much to say after this one.

Corona and Spicer give Magnus’ portion a sense of high tension to start. The pain in the eyes spoke of the despair haunting Earth. Elsewhere on Cybertron, the art mirrors the dwindling feeling of hope. Both arcs help towards bridging all parties to the closing battle. In the end, one series of events steals the show.

Readers see how much trouble Prime is in before the fight. A half page panel illustrates his fragile state. There is no rest for the weary as the fight begins again. The art reflects a manic phase as Megatron brings the battle to the home base. It feels like a monster movie with Bruticus and Devastator taking on Autobot aerial attack.

Once the true Autobots answer hits, it’s gifted an amazing full page image. Some of its’ thunder is stolen by another development. A half page shot shows how dire Prime’s current status has become. The brutal moment is followed by a somber parting image. Readers see that there’s one more crucial blow thrown in for measure. This onslaught has been all Megatron. It’s a fitting parting moment as the final page leaves no doubt of the terror unleashed.

Megatron’s full-on assault takes center stage in a pivotal chapter. Johnson brings out the hopelessness in the strong writing. Corona and the art team level up the blockbuster action. This series never lets the audience forget the epic level of storytelling on display each issue.
