BLOOD HUNT #3 by Jed MacKay, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia and Cory Petit (Marvel Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In the Impossible City, Blade has ascended. The former hero is the new lord of all vampires. He is having a conversation with a fallen hero. Black Panther is now a vampire under Blade’s rule. T’Challa has vastly changed. Giving his instructions, Blade’s conversation is over with him.

A voice speaks from the distance with an observation. Scarlet Witch lets the new lord know he has taken a loss. Wanda informs him more is coming via The Avengers.

Meanwhile on Earth, Miles Morales has transformed into a vampire. Dr. Strange intervenes and hits Miles with an attack. The blow knocks him back to his senses. Miles starts telling the Avengers, Dracula and Bloodline what he was forced to do.

In this mix, a truth is revealed that Bloodline cannot process. She has been recruited by Dracula for a sole purpose. Bloodline is the only one who can stop Blade…by killing him?!

Readers watch as the weight becomes too heavy for the young hunter. What transpires next sets forth a new path. As the darkness grows, one Avenger becomes the source of light needed to combat. Judging by the final image, is it all too late?

MacKay gives readers a break point sorley needed for the heroes. Since the beginning, Blade’s been cold and ruthless with each action. Bloodline’s reaction to events is a great counter to her father’s new persona. The writing hits the point of uncertainty and doubt about what she is being tasked to complete. It is a big moment, but another steals this issue.

An Avenger steps right into the spotlight with a speech that echoes any classic Hollywood movie. The words capture the fear and taxing pressure surrounding this fight. It leaves readers in a sense of rebellion. MacKay drops a solid counter with the final pages. The counter punch of Blade connects as this story feels far from over.

Larraz and Gracia convey the strength of the heroes in multiple areas. Scarlet Witch’s response to Blade is defiant. Readers will see her anger behind the impactful words. The moment of clarity with Bloodline is gifted a full page montage of Blade and the current state of affairs.

The Avenger spotlight starts with a near full page image. It is fitting considering what follows next. With anger and determination behind the expressions, readers can’t help but begin to think there’s a chance to win. The closing image is a full page introduction that closes events with a loud statement. There is much for readers to rave about with the art.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

An Avenger takes the spotlight by force with a turning point felt around the MCU. MacKay pens a balanced issue while the latter half elevates the chapter. Larraz, Gracia and Petit constrict the highly emotional reactions to Marvel’s bloody event with ease. The saga leaves with another big moment to exemplify why this is no ordinary story. It’s an event for a reason.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #10 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Simone Di Meo, Rex Lokus, Giovanna Niro and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The chapter opens with Man-Bat gloating about his perceived victory. Flying through the Gotham skyline, he has a prisoner in tow. Batman is shackled and along for the ride. This is ended by a flying “R” which hits the chains.

Now freed, The Dynamic Duo is back! Man-Bat’s cult leads an attack but is easily thwarted. In it aftermath, a call is made. Batman continues to go after Man-Bat. Robin is in chase to stop the hundreds of toxic-infected bats flying into the city. Can they save the day yet again?

Readers ride-along as the pair heads right into danger. Pacing ushers the excitement to a steady confrontation. In its’ wake, some loose ends are tied up. More importantly, some other avenues of adventure are left open. None will be more important than the final page reveal. A dark moment in the Wayne family is about to be revisited. Get Ready!

Williamson presents a steady finale to the current arc. Since it's beginning, the series has been anchored by the rebuilding family bond. With this chapter, the pair make great strides forward. Seeing the dialogue with Robin calling the shots was a strong point of change.

The conclusion of conflict was also another highlight. The writing kept things progressing with ease as the pair took the upper hand. It's fallout circles back to their struggles of rebuilding. The moment is poignant as to letting much needed healing starts (however short lived). It's another factor of why this series stands out from the other Bat books.

Art duties are split again which both teams leaving memorable images. De Meo and Niro kicks the story into gear with a gorgeous two page splash. Man-Bat’s depiction here carries a distinct horror feel. This leads into another two page spread that kicks off the final stand in style.

The family gets a quiet moment to regroup after everything via Čižmešija and Locus. Readers see the slow repair of the family’s broken bond via the emotions. It is a fleeting moment due to the set-up for the close, but hits its’ mark. The full page shot to conclude the issue with will most certainly have fans talking after witnessing it.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

With not a moment to spare, Gotham’s most famous father and son aim to end Man-Bat’s schemes once and for all. Williamson stacks the deck with a balance of family drama and fast paced action. The art teams craft a solid finale with more clues to where the pair’s journey to healing and heroics lead. There’s much to enjoy with this series!

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: ALPHA #1 (IDW PUBLISHING)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, a new era is ready to kick off for the heroes in a half shell. It is hard to believe that it has been 40 years since Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo debuted. Who knew at that moment that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would eventually cross over into pop culture lore?

Comics. Animation. Movies. The franchise has gone through many phases. In the end, the comics have always been a constant amongst the fan base. With a new series launch coming, IDW is giving fans an introduction into the next phase of Turtle Power.

TEENAGE MUTNAT NINJA TURTLES: ALPHA #1 by Jason Aaron, Chris Burnham, Brian Reber, Tom Waltz, Gavin Smith, Ronda Pattison and Nathan Widick (IDW Publishing) greets readers in what is forthcoming.

Let’s take a closer look and see how things shape up.

TEENAGE MUTNAT NINJA TURTLES: ALPHA #1 by Jason Aaron, Chris Burnham, Brian Reber, Tom Waltz, Gavin Smith, Ronda Pattison and Nathan Widick (IDW Publishing) - Cover: Rod Reis

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The book is broken up into two parts. The first story is “Long Way From Home” from Aaron, Burnham and Reber. It centers around one of the legendary TMNT, Donatello. Things have drastically changed for him since readers last saw him. Captured in an “Animal Safari”, the stakes are high to survive.

Aaron pens a strong return for a prelude that doesn’t miss. The dynamic of Donatello’s situation blends into familiar territory with humans vs. mutant. It reminds readers of what the Ninja Turtle is capable of when pushed. Pacing moves things right along to a close that readers won’t be able to handle the wit for the new chapter to drop.

Burnham and Reber provide a darker tone to the Safari’s shady side. Donatello’s reveal is given a near full page splash escalading events. Action sequences flow easily. This all drives towards a lasting impression of the final page. With how events are left, there will be much fans will want to find out about in the new reset.

“Monster Island” by Waltz, Smith and Pattison takes up the majority of the book. It is a great new reader friendly introduction into Mutant Nation. Old Hob and Colonel Wesley Knight are investigating a situation involving a new mutant. Can the reluctant pair work together to solve the case? Judging by the final image, there’s more developments on the horizon both need to prep for.

Waltz leans into the tensions of Hob and Knight. Their reluctancy to trust is a major point to this arc. It helps to move the story along to its’ closing pages. Once here, the pair change their demeanor to stopping the problem on the island. Its’ resolution keeps things open-ended. The story wraps up with a interesting ending that looks to pay off big when the regular series launches.

Smith and Pattison showcase the co-existence of human and mutant with the imagery. Hob and Knight’s tension is easy for readers to follow along with. Their reactions speak volumes of the shaking trust involved with this threat. The threat here makes a big entrance with a full page splash. This leads to great action panels that cap off with a eye-raising ending. The final page opens the door for what’s next as some new players enter an ever-growing landscape.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

If this is what to expect from Aaron’s run on TMNT, get ready for a legendary run. “Long Way From Home” welcomes readers into a world of dwindling hope and dangers with strong writing and art. “Monster Island” focuses in on the unique and evolving habitat of compatibility with mutants and humans. It should be a steady companion for the lead TMNT series kicking off later this summer.

X-MEN #35 by Gerry Duggan, Al Ewing, Kieron Gillen, Joshua Cassara, Phil Noto, Lucas Werneck, Leinil Francis Yu, Walt Simonson, Mark Brooks, John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, Jerome Opeña, Luciano Vecchio, Stefano Caselli, Sara Pichelli, Romulo Fajardo jr., David Curiel, Laura Martin, Sonia Oback, Marcio Menyz, Matt Hollingsworth, Matthew Wilson, Chris Claremont, Salvador Larroca, Guru-eFX and Clayton Cowles (Marvel)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The milestone opens up with a quick recap of the history of the X-Men. In nine panels, readers walk from the beginnings to the shocking choice of Charles Xavier. Choosing to bend to Orchis will to save mutantkind backfired as his students rose to the occasion. Xavier turns himself in for his crimes. His troubles have only just begun…

As an armed convoy transports him away, Wolverine gets in its’ way. This is no rescue mission. Logan is out for punishment. His quest is stopped by someone who wants to speak with Xavier first. Magneto disposes of Wolverine to have a long overdue heart to heart about the end of Krakoa.

Meanwhile, the X-Men head back to what is left of Krakoa after the fall. Kafka is waiting and has much news for the Children of The Atom. Readers watch as a major revelation takes place. Once a choice is made, some mutants are not on board. The conflict is perfect for a certain mutant who returns. Apocalypse is back on Krakoa. He doesn’t waste time in making his presence felt. How will he handle the revelations as well?

What happens next is a lasting battle for the ages. The fate of Krakoa is decided once and for all. Left in its’ wake is a new direction for the remaining mutants. A glimpse into certain futures leaves one thing this era needs: Hope. It also leaves a shocking conclusion for one character as the Krakoan legacy is not soon to be forgotten.

With the amount of talent here for the 700th issue of Uncanny X-Men, it is clear this is an end of an era. Charles Xavier proves to be a looming presence throughout the issue. The conversation with Magneto feels like a passing of the torch. Roles also feel reversed with one notable quote thrown in the mix. It is a needed area for the transition to move from this era to a new one. This leads into a eye-raising closing arc which proves nothing will be the same as it was.

The Krakoa piece doesn’t hold back on give fans strong moments. With one major revelation, it clears up one of the era’s darkest hours. Apocalypse enters the story with anger and confusion. His role in this era was a major point of surprise. Seeing the era slip away causes a natural reaction for the powerful mutant. Its’ fallout leaves readers knowing changes are on the way. This sets up an engaging playing field from a dream that most woke up from.

The art showcase comes through with the middle section of the chapter. There are some full page action images that will delight readers. Action scenes hold nothing back. There are a few images that level up in the brutality. One character shows a side of violence rarely seen. Considering the parties involved, it reflects the anger of loss with Krakoa’s fall.

Xavier and Magento’s conversation is filled with frustration and bitterness. The old friends reactions to each others quips display this, esp. Xavier. The realization of what he’s done conveys his acceptance of defeat. The emotions of loss carry into the conclusion. The series of panels saying goodbye mirror the loss of a dream. It departs with a series of images tipping the changes in the new landscape. The art leaves readers with a noteworthy closing panel that should play a bigger role down the road.

FINAL POINT: 8.9

With an oversized finale, the Krakoan era is put to rest. Stacked with an all-star line-up of creators, the writing lines up final goodbyes and new beginnings. Images of intense fighting to somber realization of a fallen dream will have fans attention. One dream is over, what will rise from its’ ashes?

From that moment, it is game on! Blackgate Prison becomes center stage. Batman vs. Failsafe! Winner take all! The action speeds things at a high pace. Multiple characters are featured in between the action. Its’ resolution is a surprise one but pays off big. This leads into another confrontation that cements the winner’s status as Gotham’s protector. The final page is a perfect send-off to where this chapter closes.

Zdarsky gives readers a massive payoff for a few threads he has been placing in his run. Captio lurking throughout this saga finally has a good purpose with the conclusion. There is a solid sequence in the closing act where the teacher becomes the student in their dialogue.

The writings’ strength is the long overdue conversation between Bruce and the Bat-Family. In Zdarsky’s run, their relationship has been continuously fractured. Before combat, Bruce does the one thing that many have been waiting for. This leads into a grounded moment that can only go upward. The resolution is very smart and gives a fitting end to this story for now. There’s a lot for superhero fans to enjoy with this one.

Jiménez and Morey feature Bruce in a rotating emotional state. The meeting with the Bat Family ranges from disappointment to new found confidence. This rolls into the final showdown flawlessly. DUCK AND COVER #4 by Scott Snyder, Rafael Albuquerque, Marcelo Maiolo and Bernardo Brice (Comixology Originals via Best Jackett Press and STOUT CLUB)

Snyder takes readers through many phases before bringing a stop to the ride. Del’s journey has ranged from tragic soul to reluctant hero. In the closing phase, Del addresses some of the looming ghosts that have haunted him. The talk with Junior is heavy in its weight on both characters. The resolution will hit readers very hard.

From here, the story shifts gears into a sense of normalcy. It is a perfect break moment feeling like a calm before the storm. The closing act feels much like a movie from Del’s collection. Resiliency and hope carries the characters into their conflict. Once the smoke clears, Del makes a stance that sets a course for if and when we see this version of the 1950’s again.

Albuquerque and Maiolo construct some memorable moments for this finale. The reveal of the shelter’s inside proves for a solid break from the drama. The initial threat makes a huge entrance with a near full page panel, fighting the survivors.

RISE OF THE POWERS OF X #5 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Orchis nearly defeated the Children of the Atom. Nathaniel Essex has now become Enigma, a near god and threat to all. These events convinced Charles Xavier to cut a deal with Orchis to save mutantkind. The deal goes against everything the X-Men have fought for.

Luckily, Xavier’s students didn’t go along with plans. They made a victorious stand against Nimrod. With only one threat still looming, the fate of Mutantkind is now in one person’s hands.

Rise of the Powers of X #5 by Kieron Gillen, Luciano Vecchio, David Curiel, and Clayton Cowles (Marvel Entertainment) sets up a showdown of epic proportions.

Let’s take a closer look at the end of the Krakoan Era!

Rise of the Powers of X #5 by Kieron Gillen, Luciano Vecchio, David Curiel, and Clayton Cowles (Marvel Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The X-Men have succeeded where Xavier had failed. They have brought back Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force! In the former White Hot Room of Mutant Afterlife, Jean has emerged. A conversation is had between Jean the powerful entity. With the souls of every mutant feeding the fire, They head to space merged with a mission. Defeat Enigma or die trying.

Meanwhile, the mutants on Earth celebrate their win over Nimrod. However, there is an apprehensive voice looming. Mr. Sinister asks Destiny if it is truly over. Her reply doesn’t support positivity. She simply doesn’t tell him what she sees.

Readers watch as Phoenix flies into space for the confrontation. Enigma is waiting with all the other Dominions as backup. This truly has the “heavyweight title fight” feel the story deserves. An unforeseen play happens that causes Enigma to run away.

This leads back to the two that started the Krakoan Era in the first place: Charles Xavier and Moira. Their conversation in present time goes back to the moment on the park bench where Xavier was shown the future. It is poetic that all things come full circle.

From here, choices are made with direct impact. The fallout leads to a heroic moment that lends itself to the fight. Nothing is held back. Once the smoke clears, readers know how the future is going to play out. They also are left with a stunning ending arc. One era has ended forever and another begins.

Gillen constructs a steady end to one of comics’ biggest eras. Seeing Phoenix being the last hope for Mutants feels as a metaphor for the return of Mutants back to the classic X-Men era. While ambitious, seeing mutants driven in a more heroic stance proves feels more like the characters we all became fans off.

The writing dives into the guilt and regret of Xavier. This proves to be a strong element. Hearing his recollection of events defines how far things have come and gone. This leads into a defining moment which inspires the final stand. Its’ fallout leaves no confusion on where events now lead. It is exactly what you are looking for to conclude this chapter with.

Vecchio goes big with many full or near full page images for this issue. It helps create that “big fight feel” previously eluded to. From Enigma’s initial encounter with Phoenix to the eventual face-off later, the pages are bold and direct of how powerful these two beings are. The Jean proclamation of “We’re The X-men” is an absolute defining image for this conclusion.

Xavier’s recollection of events also stands out. The use of panels is creative in explaining his thoughts. It’s a great use of historic retelling at its core. Xavier’s final moments in the chapter will also stand out. The series of panels hold nothing back as his future is clarified for the audience. This will be a moment that fans will have much to say about.

FINAL SCORE: 9.7

The end of the Krakoan Era has arrived in grand fashion. Gillen pens a tale of reflection and fearlessness with Mutantkind’s fate hanging in the balance. Vecchio, Curiel and Cowles provide the larger than life visuals to bring this era of time to a thunderous close. This will be one story not to miss!

Just when readers think they know the ending, the final act proves otherwise. Prepare for a final series of pages that will have fans talking and recapping what they just read.

Starks pens a touching and exciting finale with Linnea alone in the spotlight. The first act focuses on her processing what she has just seen. It’s presented in a strong way with the readers clearly feeing her pain. The range of emotions builds towards a direction shifting moment.

The fallout spirals into an excellent close. Starks paces the actions out to maximize a game changing action. What follows next is a creative venture that gives fans much to ponder. Linnea’s journey has been one about finding strength when tragedy strikes. The conclusion doesn’t disappoint but also leaves a lasting thought on the way out.

Galán delves into Linnea’s grief with a unique panel set-up. Using 2-3 per page with no words, readers can truly feel her emptiness. A quick flashback sequence breaks up the dark tones at a needed point. The images show Linnea at a place of comfort and calm before snapping back to reality.

The game-changer moment is granted a near full page. It presents the action on a grand stage. This ushers in the final moments. Galán does a great job setting the final image up. Readers won’t be ready for the full page panel concluding what has been a solid read from start to finish.

FINAL POINT: 9.7

Through tragedy comes a final attempt to right some wrongs in this series spectacular finale. Starks leans heavy into the themes of grief and loss to fuel Linnea’s last chance at justice. The Penguin #10 by Tom King, Rafael De Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo and Clayton Cowles (DC Comics) - Cover: Christian Ward

King dives into the unique perspectives of the characters at play. Allowing their narrations to dominate most pages helps with this chapter. Giving that insight to the reader only amplifies what’s unfolding even more. This plays heavily into arguably the breakout character of this issue: Addie Cobblepot.

King’s writing depicts her as ruthless as her father. Through the course of the issue, she slowly starts breaking from the pressure of her father’s plans. This leads to a confrontation where it becomes clear she’s already lost her claim to the throne.

Oswald’s quiet scheming takes a grander role as events unfold. King slows down the pace to build up the eventual move. Once Penguin strikes, the moment hits readers with full force. The cutting dialogue given leaves a chilling reality in its wake. Oswald Cobblepot is back with a vengeance.

De Latorre and Maiolo blend in themes of defiance and mystery throughout the issue. The rooftop scene is capped off with a well paced full page of Batman and Penguin talking The frustration and rage on Addie’s face tells a bigger story as her grasp if the city slips. Her conversations with Oswald and Aiden conveys that point with ease. Knowing what is looming, readers bear witness to her slow breakdown.

However, the pages that will be most talked about are Oswald’s “message” to Aiden. The two page splash makes a very loud statement. It holds nothing back as Oswald makes a bold announcement with his actions. The imagery around this section holds nothing back. There’s no question about what unfolds. A play is made that the city may not be ready for. This spells nothing but win for the audience watching Gotham pushed to its edge.

FINAL POINT: 8.3

With multiple narration leading the way, Oswald Cobblepot’s family feud approaches its climatic end. King’s creative approach sells the dark times ahead with strong writing. De Latorre and Maiolo pace out the drama with exceptional images. Gotham had better brace for what’s coming next!

COBRA COMMANDER #5 (SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT/IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, Evil sheds its’ final skin. The rise to power of G.I. Joe’s most despised enemy has reached its destination. Lying, cheating and killing has all been in the quest of power. In the course of this story, readers have seen a figure manipulate every scenario he’s come across. Now with one more encounter to be had, the heir to evil is poised to finally achieve his master plan.

COBRA COMMANDER #5 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Annalisa Leoni and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) positions the devilish mastermind in front of a person who could be the missing factor in global domination.

Let’s take a deeper dive and see how the conclusion plays out.

COBRA COMMANDER #5 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Annalisa Leoni and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) - Cover: Dustin Nguyen

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

After learning who the Dreadnoks were working with, Cobra Commander makes a statement. Strategic attacks on M.A.R.S. Industries locations unfold. This does not sit well with the CEO: DESTRO!

The company is still recovering from the ordeal involving DUKE. It cannot take another public hit. Seeing that the attacks led to theft, Destro wants swift action. A “clue” has been left behind: Ripper. The dreadnok comes bearing an invite from the Commander to meet up and talk.

Readers watch as Destro, Mercer and a team travel to an undisclosed location. Upon arrival, Destro assesses the seemingly quiet residential neighborhood. Ripper gives fair warning that this whole situation is far from normal. Once a demonstration is given, the Commander makes a grand entrance.

The master manipulator starts his work on Destro. Secrets are revealed on how Commander’s dark vision is coming to life. What is Destro’s reaction to all of this? The conclusion leads into the next phase of a global terrorist organization the likes the world has never seen. It is truly the birth of evil.

However, there is still one party having a vested interest in the Commander’s plans. The parting moment leads readers into a different direction of the Energon Universe which is sure to thrill and delight.

COBRA COMMANDER #5 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Annalisa Leoni and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics)

The Birth of Terror. Williamson crafts a defining moment in G.I. Joe lore. Destro’s initial reaction to events plays into his cold presence. Being a man of business, the dialogue reflects his cutthroat tactics. In dealing with a master con man, this shines through in their first meeting.

Commander’s dark charisma shines in these moments. In each issue, the “horror” aspect stands out with no exception here. The audience will enjoy trying to figure out who has the upper hand in the situation. This builds towards a solid finish with Commander’s biggest strength (and weakness) shining in the end. The parting act re-enforces ties with the Energon Universe as a new phase begins.

Milana and Leoni build Destro’s lead-in with a direct two page spread. The tone is controlled anger as Destro gets more information on the attacks. This leads to the dramatic entrance of Commander to their meeting. It conveys the fragile relationship between the pair as they start talking their deal. A moment that will stand out is one involving Dr. Lazlo. It breaks the seriousness for a second, with his facial reactions saying a lot.

The final pages of the Commander’s tale focuses on his new persona. Reactions are mixed until the moment he makes an address. The two page spread cements the new era of terror. With the feeling of dire excitement, the pages will have readers knowing that change has arrived whether the world is ready for it or not.

FINAL POINT: 9

When the horror ends, the true terror begins. Williamson’s fantastic writing establishes an uneasy alliance that spells disaster for any who cross their paths. The excellent imagery of Milana, Leoni and Wooten construct a sense of fear and danger as Evil enters its’ final form. This series is another monster win for a fast growing universe building a reputation for must read books every time out.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #37 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the journey into Erica Slaughter’s past continues. SIKTC has returned with a spotlight on the “slaughterverse” hunter’s history. In the next few issues, the chapters are all stand alone stories. It’s a welcomed take as fans are still reeling from the Cutter showdown.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #37 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) features an early Erica Slaughter in action.

Let’s not delay and take a closer look at events here.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #37 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tynion keeps things very simple with this chapter. Erica and a young child head into a Wal-Mart esque store. The clerks appear lost to what is happening. This series of events lean into Erica’s early days. Her banter with the young girl she’s trying to save plays out well. It helps to lighten up some of the darker elements at hand. Erica’s still growing her role.

The talk with Aaron shows her determination and unjaded nature. From here, the dialogue moves to the young girl. Her explaining Erica’s job provided a fine moment while Erica goes to work. The ending brims with anger and the cold demeanor that readers know from other Erica stories. Her journey feels like the long game payoff is coming, which is always a win for fans.

Dell’Edera and Muerto grant Erica a fun entrance into the story. The reactions of the employees range from doubtful to anxious. Erica’s reassurance into stopping the monster jumps off the page. It’s a subtle moment but fits the segment. This follows with a two page spread, leading into a vivid full page image of Erica and a chainsaw.

Pacing drives the fighting in this issue. Seeing Erica take on the monster felt huge. There’s little page time for the creature but using the supporting characters to describe the incident was solid. This works well with the action panels. The fallout comes across as cold and business per usual. Erica has a great walk-off panel that leads directly to where the early days continue onward. It’s fantastic storytelling!

FINAL POINT: 8.7

The latest journey into Slaughter encompasses everything fans love about Erica Slaughter. Tynion’s writing delivers a classic Slaughter hunt. The art shines as the supporting cast steals attention for this chapter. With a strong walk off close, the past is a present issue that SIKTC fans will want to check out!

BLOOD SQUAD SEVEN #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the 90’s are all the rage again! Fans have seen a resurgence of 90’s comic influence in comics and pop culture. From X-Men ‘97 to Local Man, the appeal of the decade is drawing attention. A new series from Image Comics looks to dive into that era, but with a twist.

BLOOD SQUAD SEVEN #1 by Joe Casey, Paul Fry, Francesco Segala, Gloria Martinelli and Rus Wooton spinds out of the pages of Dutch. It throws a unique concept to readers. Is a team 30 years removed still relevant today?

Let’s take a closer look and see how this issue fares.

BLOOD SQUAD SEVEN #1 by Joe Casey, Paul Fry, Francesco Segala, Gloria Martinelli and Rus Wooton (Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Casey dives into the nostalgia of the era for a solid debut. Seeing how a former member is trying to recapture and rebuild the past makes for some interesting dynamics. Erica’s relationship with her daughter showcases the times have changed. “Heroes as Celebrites” with time passed leads to a theme of perception versus reality. The chapter builds towards blurring the lines. This becomes very evident with the closing moments. Seeing what unfolds there, the struggle to combat public opinion may be more challenging than it’s worth.

The art gives readers much of the throwback feel of early Image books. The full page splash of one “hero” flying through the violent destruction kicks off a sense of direction. Erica’s demeanor through pitching the team concept ranges from frustration to calm optimism. Ripcord’s violence is direct and blunt. The imagery holds nothing back when he is on page. The homages to Youngblood amongst other books adds a nice nostalgia break to the more serious tone of the series.

FINAL POINT: 8

With the theme of Perception vs. Reality, Blood Squad Seven leaves an impression on fans with its’ throwback concept. Casey delves into the past era with solid writing. Fry and Segala present the ultra violence and mystique of the past with images that will have readers talking. This will be one to keep an eye out for on NCBD.

Elsewhere, Tigra and Hunter’s Moon are in search of one man who might be able to reverse all of this. However (even with the help of Miles Morales), it may be too little, too late. The astral form of Dr. Strange is still reeling from the attack from Blade. His human body? Another story.

Readers watch as the mood becomes darker. As Blade’s forces grow stronger, there appears to be some still wanting a fight. The action picks up as the Bloodcoven are challenged yet again. The outcome leads into a new avenue. Just when readers think they have an idea of the next phase, the closing image changes plans. Get ready for another wild chapter in Marvel’s bloodiest tale yet!

BLOOD HUNT #2 by Jed MacKay, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia and Cory Petit (Marvel Entertainment) Cover: Kael Ngu

MacKay speeds up the pace to give fans a very heavy driven action chapter. The writing depicts Blade as over-confident as plans are moving. The pairing of Bloodline and Dracula provide a unique dynamic as the Bloodcoven arrives. From here, the action takes events up a few notches. Nothing is held back as the battle rages onward. The fallout leads into a natural direction. However, the closing moment is a genuine shock as readers will be guessing on what happens next.

Larraz and Gracia construct amazing action panels throughout this issue. The Bloodcoven battle kicks off with a full page splash of their opponents. Vision gets a near full page moment as he springs into action. This concludes with an iconic image declaring the true winners of this round. The fallout provides a feeling of tension and uncertainty. It caps off with a shocking total page picture that speaks many words before this chapter bows out.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The eternal darkness of the Marvel Comics Universe grows with another strong chapter. MacKay delves heavy into the action with the writing. Larraz, Gracia and Petit provide some high level battle panels before leaving readers with a huge parting moment. The story continues to impress as the violent night rages on.

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #5 by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck, Stefano Caselli, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham (Marvel Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Nimrod and Orchis are on the brink of victory. With Sentinel City poised to strike, there is little hope for mutantkind to survive. Times are so dire that Charles Xavier tries cutting a deal to work for Orchis to save the surviving mutants. Scott Summers and company don’t buy into this arrangement. The X-Men are prepared to fight to the end to stop Nimrod, even if it means they don’t survive the outcome.

They have bought some time as the S.W.O.R.D. space station was teleported into Sentinel City. It dealt a blow but wasn’t enough. Cyclops and Nightcrawler assess the situation. Unfortunately, Colossus is knocked into space. This leaves Cyclops alone to face off with a waiting Nimrod!

Meanwhile, Rogue and Kwannon make a play to stop Omega Sentinel. Their attack neutralizes the threat also known as Karima. Its resolution leaves one obstacle handled but victory is far from reachable.

Readers watch as Nimrod unleashes a full attack on the X-Men. For being a perfect sentinel, there is one variable it didn’t comprehend. In their darkest hour, a force enters the battle. It is a showdown that will have fans on their feet.

The outcome is pure box office excitement! It is one fans are sure to be pleased with. The following scenario sets forth a new path. As big of a battle this was, there might be a larger one at hand. The final image calls forth a return that may be the deciding factor of mutantkind’s fate! With two parts left, anything is possible from here!

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #5 by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck, Stefano Caselli, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham (Marvel Entertainment) cover: Carlos Gómez

Duggan delivers on an action packed conclusion to this series. From the initial onset, the stakes felt astronomical. Cyclops leading the charge was a perfect choice for the final battle with Nimrod. Even through the course of the battle, the writing reflected the will to survive in Scott Summers. The defiant confidence shined. These also carried through with the rest of the X-Men. It captured the themes of what makes this group so special.

One member steals the show in this chapter. After making a grand entrance, the conflict changes gears. It is a game changing moment that the others feed off of looking for strength. This builds towards a dramatic end of battle. The fallout shifts gears back to Cyclops. Knowing his legacy with the group, it is only fitting that he is the one standing in the end pushing to end this era once and for all.

Werneck and Caselli give fans much to rave about in the finale. The showdown with Omega Sentinel conveys big emotion in Rogue and Kwannon. The broken state of Karima sets the pace for what lies ahead with Nimrod. The anger of Cyclops plays off the arrogance of Nimrod very well.

Fans get a full page entrance for the game-changer in this conflict. The reactions from the other mutants resonates with fans. The images mirror the growing feeling of hope as their battle rages onward. Each panel speaks volumes of the impact of the battle. This leads into a strong ending panel of the victor. The art team ties up events with a full page montage that cements the key factor in bringing this all to an end.

FINAL POINT: 9.7

Epic is the only proper way to describe the final showdown of Nimrod and the Children of the Atom. Duggan excels the pace to craft frantic excitement in the battle fans have been waiting for. The art team gift readers with big action and larger emotional impacts as the Krokoan Era winds down.

SUPERMAN #14 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, a combustible duo finally explodes. Superman and Lobo became unlikely allies in pursuit of Brainiac. The Collector of Worlds has a Czarnian army at his disposal. He also has some members of the Super Family as prisoners.

With common interest in Brainiac’s plans, the “Main Men Of Steel” begin their chase. The partnership seemed to be working well until an offer was made that one couldn’t say no to.

SUPERMAN #14 by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Miguel Mendonca, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS) sees the fallout of the proposal and how that spells doom for defeating Brainiac.

Let’s take a closer look and see how things play out.

SUPERMAN #14 by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Miguel Mendonca, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In space, everyone can hear a punch. Lobo and Superman are throwing down at the Hardcore station. General Chacal offered Lobo to be the new leader of his army of Czarnians. To lock up the “House of Lobo”, The Main Man must take out Superman. Let the fight begin!

During their brawl, Supes tries reasoning with Lobo. He brings up how Chacal is using him. Lobo denies the claims. In this moment, Chacal captures Superman. Chacal gives Superman some fire as a slip of the tongue proves Superman was right. The group brings Superman right to Brainiac’s ship.

On board, Lex Luthor and Supergirl are on the run in Colu, the home city of Brainiac (long thought destroyed). While evading detection, Luthor answers a question looming: Why was he working with Brainiac. The answer isn’t cut and dry, but it’s a Lex answer. An unlikely hero jumps into their path to help save them for now, but is it too late?

The closing moments packs quite the impact. Readers will be in shock and awe of what Brainiac has done. A new factor has entered this equation. It makes an immediate impact, leaving any witnesses knowing that their end is near. Once fans see that final page, there is no doubt events went from bad to worse for Superman.

SUPERMAN #14 by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Miguel Mendonca, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS) - Cover: Salvador Larroca

The true emergence of Evil. Williamson does an excellent build towards Brainiac’s reveal. The throwdown with Lobo and Superman plays right into the manipulations theme of this event. Chacal’s scheming his its mark. The result becomes more than is bargained for. This is amplified by the conversation with Luthor and Supergirl.

Seeing Lex appear to be concerned for Brainiac’s plans speaks volumes. It all combines for a shocking final act. Once the new entity makes their presence known, the writing leaves no pause for their arrival. It is a brutal conclusion mixed with shocking reactions. Fans will be on edge until the next chapter drops.

The art team gifts readers with gigantic images throughout this issue. Explosive two page splashes back to back sets the Superman and Lobo fight into high gear. It is balanced with the facial reactions of Luthor. While running from Brainiac’s forces, the emotions range from worried to concerned.

Arguably the issue’s stongest work is the closing act. Another two page full splash starts Brainiac’s final plans. The result is treated with a dynamic two page spread. It clearly delivers on the danger and carnage Brainiac has just unleashed. The chapter is perfectly capped off with a full page visual that leaves a bold statement until the “House of Brainiac” resumes.

FINAL POINT: 9

With deceptions abound, Superman finds himself in front of a new evil that he might not be able to stop. Williamson constructs an incredible read with action and answers filling the bill. The art team elevates the conflicts and challenges to new levels. A new threat to the DCU has arrived and fans might not be ready for what’s next!

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #6 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of the Original Emerald Crusader. During this story, Alan Scott has taken on all challenges. A former lover. A closed minded society. A destiny that cannot be denied. Now with the odds stacked against him, it appears that maybe there will be a light of hope at the end of the dark tunnel.

Let’s not wait any longer and dive into the finale.

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #6 by Tim Sheridan, Cian Tormey, Matt Herms, Jordi Tarragona and Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS) - Cover: David Talaski

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The chapter begins in present time with Scott narrating this story to a mysterious figure.

In the past, the relationship between Alan Scott and Vladimir Sokov aka John Ladd is extremely complex. Sokov had been working as a spy. Infused with the powers of a Red Lantern, Sokov has turned his attention to eliminate his former lover.

Plans have not gone as expected. Scott has bested Sokov through all the personal attacks. Unfortunately, this has not won victory. The Crimson Host has arrived to take care of Sokov and Scott. Luckily, Scott has some powerful friends watching his back: the JSA!

The action starts fast as both group throw down. Sokov’s powers are fading fast without a recharge. Scott is doing all he can to fend off the threat. However, Major Blaze halts his progress. Sokov jumps in for the safe but it’s not enough. The powerful figure starts unloading on Sokov and kills him in the process!

Readers watch as the emotions pour out of Scott. The rage is unleashed. Is it enough? A shocking event occurs that enters the battlefield. Its’ result is one that will catch readers off-guard. This sends the story into a more personal reaction as Scott comes to grips with what just transpired. It closes one area but leads to a very strong final act.

After the events that Scott has had to endure, there is still one enemy that he must face alone. The closing pages set that last conflict up with a defiant Scott refusing to back down. Its’ epilogue completes a soul’s journey into becoming what many have seen all along: Scott as a hero and a symbol of strength.

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #6 by Tim Sheridan, Cian Tormey, Matt Herms, Jordi Tarragona and Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS) - Cover: Mateus Manhanini

Sheridan leaves this point of Scott’s life with validation and grace. The conflict with Sokov has had many layers involved. With their last stand, the writing leans into Scott’s feelings and pits them against his duties. The results leave Scott in a much stronger place heading into the close.

The issue’s most powerful moment is one addressing Scott’s conflict with society. Scott handles this issue with powerful words. The dialogue reinforces the emergence of Scott as more than just a hero. Standing up for who is without fear is the most heroic action he can ever take. This leads to a revelation of who’s listening to the story that will please fans. It is a moment that will connect with many. As this unfolds, the closing dialogue solidifies what everyone has seen in this entire series: the emergence of unbreakable will through adversity.

Tormey, Herms, Tarragona and Gattoni waste no pages gifting the action to readers. There’s an incredible two page splash to open up events. The battle with Sokov and Blaze screams of intensity and anger. This is reflected in Scott’s powers unleashed in a half page set-up. Its’ ending is mixed with shorter panels and the former lovers understand the end has arrived.

Panels are also gifted with the pure emotional reactions of Scott’s heart breaking and rebuilding itself. Once the reveal of the figure in present time is completed, the images shine with the release of the building drama. The closing pages tie up loose ends very well. This is all topped off with a full page visual that caps off the epic saga in solid fashion.

FINAL POINT: 10

What makes a hero? That question is definitively answered in this final chapter. Sheridan’s superb writing invokes the grit and determination of Scott’s unbreakable will. Tormey, Herms, Tarragona and Gattoni flood the pages with exciting imagery. Readers will leave knowing no power is greater than love.

MS. MARVEL: MUTANT MENACE #3 by Iman Vellani, Sabir Pirzada, Scott Godlewski, Erick Arciniega and Joe Caramagna (Marvel Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With the return of Red Dagger, Kamala’s life becomes more complicated. Throughout the seriousness of Orchis’ attack, the writing keeps things centered around young love and her dealing with her new status quo. The action comes into play quickly in the middle act. Vellani and Pirzada playing off the notion of the Five is a solid plot theme in describing the familiar faces that are popping up.

Seeing the true villain’s plans in motion is an easy connection for readers. With Kamala being involved in the Mutant issues of the current MCU, the notion of Orchis involvement helps. It brings Kamala in a closer connection to Mutant affairs. The closing page might have something to say about that as Kamala’s dream escape crashes back to reality.

The art by Godlewski and Arciniega reflects the ever optimistic title hero. Red Dagger’s introduction brings up images of youthful hope and romance. It serves to counter the heavier matter of the Mutant hunting going on. The introduction of “zombie” Cyclops is gifted a half page image. Seeing the X-Man in this state makes for a loud, positive visual. This builds up for more as the book progresses. Readers will have a big surprise waiting for them on the final page. it is one that should have more fans talking about what is unfolding here.

FINAL POINT: 8

With an old friend stopping by, Kamala Khan’s world gets turned upside down. The writing brings out the best of Kamala’s personality. Paired with solid imagery depicting action and a blossoming romance, fans will have much to be invested in. The final page should have some readers buzzing with who stops by. Let’s take a closer look at what’s unfolding now/

ULTIMATE X-MEN #3 by Peach Momoko, Zack Davisson and Travis Lanham (Marvel Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The chapter presents a few new avenues in Ichiki’s story. The flashbacks to two years prior sets the tone for how long the Shadow has been creeping around. Readers get the sense of the long game being played here. The writing reflects the unknown factor and how that composes Ichiki’s character in the present. They also get a deep insight to the mysterious friend Mei.

Her story is that of pain and a shattered homelife. Once her story plays out, the themes circle back to the mutant aspect of her world. It makes the budding friendship with Ichiki more organic. This builds towards a strong closing moment as another change is heading into Ichiki’s way.

The art continues to crush this series. Flashback sequences elude to the sinister motives being planted. It is a counter to the more happier times of Ichiki and Mei. Both seem like they have made a much needed friend due to their backgrounds.

Readers are treated to a two page spread showcasing Mei’s powers. This comes on the heels of uneasy imagery of the Shadow in play. Momoko doves into the emotions of Mei to connect her more throughly with readers. The sense of wonder and failure crowd the young girl’s panel. This all changes in the closing moments. The parting image leaves readers off on more of a question than a shocking moment. It is solid storytelling all around with this book.

FINAL POINT: 8

HISAKO ICHIKI and her world continues to provide a unique take on the X-Men mythos. Momoko shifts gears to Mei’s story which delivers on impactful writing and images. Once things come back to the present, there is a sense of wonder as a new player enters the game. This will be one to look out for on NCBD.

HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #23 BY Tate Brombal, Antonio Fuso, Miquel Muerto and AndWorld Design (Series Development: James Tynion IV and Designs and Development: Werther Dell’Edera) - BOOM! Studios

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Brombal shows how this conflict is breaking down both sides. Jace is trying to fight his battle but shows his emotions are leaking his weakness. With each wund that has been done, it’s fueling Jace on his mission. The question becomes: will it be enough to win?

On he other hand, being embarrassed by a lowly hunter doesn’t go over well with each house. The alliance seems to start showing its’ fractures after the defeat. The Old Dragon steals the spotlight to show his plans to eliminate Jace are the only options now. This causes big tensions with the opposing house. The writing shows how much more is layered beneath the surface. Even in the final moments, there are secrets to be unlocked. This is all much to fans’ benefits.

Fuso and Muerto lean into Jace’s rage in the opening pages. His talk with Maven leaves no doubt of how personal this all has become. It’s capped off with a strong near full page visualizing why he is fighting this fight.

The breakdown between the Houses also jumps out at readers. The embarrassment of Jace winning drives the Dragon into full panic. His facial reactions speak of the last shot to reclaim his reputation. The fallout demonstrates the power play each parties are attempting on the other. Once the closing pages start, readers will have the inclination that the end is coming faster than expected.

FINAL POINT: 8.1

Jace’s last stand builds towards an unimaginable showdown with the latest chapter. Brombal keeps the paranoia and rage high with the writing. Fuso, Muerto and the team magnify the breaking of spirits amongst the key players as Jace’s time ticks closer away.

Eloise is a girl thirsty to learn as her mother lie dying from a mysterious tumor deep within her. Until Doctor Jakob Eyes appears on a house call to mysteriously cure her of all diseases. Eager to learn from the man himself, Eloise follows the haunting doctor to his house. Does Doctor Eyes take apprentices, and is Eloise prepared to view the grotesque lessons that await?

The Art:

Have you ever witnessed something so intriguing yet so vomit-inducing that you are unsure if you are to look away or watch in awe? That is the best way to sum up the pages within the confines of this glorious book of horrors. So many pages leave us looking at every inch of the panels, taking in the brains, skulls, and viles that all present themselves to us and Doctor Eyes. Eamon and Jay have done such a wonderful job creating Jakob, from the mask that he wears to the hollow, dark, void-of-life eyes with which he stares at Eloise.

The panels have a dull and grey back drop yet the characters and everything in the foreground burst with color which speaks to just how fascinating this story really is. The panel looking into the house from above as though it was taken from The Sims is perhaps one of the best in the issue. I cannot get enough.

The Writing:

The Hivemind continues to weave a mysterious tale. In this issue, Jakob gets some personality and showcases his sharp wit and zero tolerance for foolery. Eloise is one of the readers who have become enthralled by this book as we, too, want to know how he does it. Meanwhile, Shawn Lee stands out in the tone of the lettering. You feel the softness of Eloise and Jakob's voice and the thundering roar when needed.

Overall:

This comic continues to solidify Magma Comix as a serious player in the world of comics. It's a slow-burning, horrifying mystery that plays to all of our senses. When you finish the issue, we are left begging for the next, as we need it immediately.

10/10.
