The story begins in the Bronx. A Who’s Who of the Criminal Underworld is in attendance. Owl, Crime Master, Black Mariah, Hammerhead and Shang Chi lead the notable names. The conversation sharpens as everyone appears to be making claims for Tombstone’s territories amongst others. Suddenly, a new player has emerged to the meeting: Janice Lincoln (Beetle).

Lincoln states her case for her father’s seat. Hammerhead leads the voices against this move. They claim Lincoln hasn’t earned it. He throws down a challenge for Janice to do. If she completes it, she’s in. The mission: Kill Randy Robertson, who’s working with Mayor LUKE CAGE to repeal Wilson Fisk’s law outlawing superheroes in NYC.

All the while, Spider-Man (Peter Parker) is attempting to stop Slyde. Luckily he has help from another Spider-Man: Miles Morales! Their conversation is more tense than expected as Miles addresses Peter’s disappearance months ago. With more guilt added on, Peter listens to Miles’ plea to help clean up Fisk’s mess.

Can Peter save the day? What of the future of Randy Robertson? Can Janice fufill the assignment?

At this stage, the opening salvos are thrown. The action speeds up as a choice is made that becomes the first domino to fall. Secrets are revealed as a major player makes a shocking debut. What other actions was this figure behind? Who will align with them? With one thunderous strike, Spider-Man is forced to act quickly leaving readers with a last image that leaves no doubt war has been declared!

The writing of Wells and Ziglar wastes little time in setting up the key players upcoming conflict. Janice is written as a conflicted character. On one hand, she is wanting to rise in the ranks of he father. In another, the situation posed throws an internal conflict to her feelings. This is an easy connection to readers as Janice seems to be trying to find level ground to stand on throughout this issue.

The rest of the story plays out much like a great true crime tale. Readers see there is very little loyalty amongst thieves. This tension builds heading into the closing act. The writers also throw a solid reveal in the mix which becomes a game-changer. Spider-man’s time in the story also steps back to allow the other players ample time to set the event in motion. This leads to a superb final page which leaves readers excited to see what happens next.

The art of Vasquez and Shaw paces itself quickly throughout the issue. Hammerhead’s mannerisms play into the dirty deeds he’s pushing on the other criminals involved. His non-stop smirk amplifies his evil ways. This plays into the reaction to Janice’s assignment. Once that resolution begins, Shaw’s art takes a more sinister look. This feel plays into a big moment in the book which becomes the catalyst for the upcoming war.

The art reflects the dangerous world this story is based in. Once the main villain explains their motives, readers see a superb visual breaking down each crime family stance after hearing another boss has fallen.

Even with the limited Spider-Man time, the art gives our hero enough time to become involved. This leads right into a closing image that leaves no room for mis-interpretation.

The first die has been cast in a battle where New York City hangs in the balance. Strong writing of Wells and Ziglar light the match with solid visuals from Vasquez, Shaw and the team finishing the explosive start to the next big Spider-Man event fans will be talking about. GOD has entered the playing field.

As Ian, Joy and Andrea converse in the diner, they quickly realize they are not alone. GOD is inside and making milkshakes? Ian is not believing the stranger is how he claims to be. Readers see a subtle way of proving the claim via Blood Milkshakes.

Ian still denies the claims. He thinks this figure might have more to do with The Takers. God tries explaining more in detail. A new thought is posed where not one being but rather all Humanity is God now. Ian isn’t exactly on board (still) but the rest of the group clearly has warmed up to the notion. From this conversation, a new member looks ready to join the group in their rescue attempt.

The conversation is interrupted by figures representing the Takers. With the action escalating, does the mysterious stranger sway fate in their favor?

With a hasty escape, the group reunites with Francis and Cynthia. It is at this moment, the dynamic changes forever. What course does the family now walk towards? As one’s past comes to light, the rescue mission appears to begin, but not without a hefty cost. The emotional pull begins on readers leading into a closing page that won’t be soon forgotten as the end appears to be closer than anyone wants to fathom.

Zdarsky throws readers off their game with the introduction of a major player. Bringing in GOD to assist the team demonstrates a new look at the set-up of the story. The explanation of reasons and motives are an easy follow to readers. It also allows new directions into where things lead. God’s story provides a huge set-up for when the group escapes the diner.

Featuring a stand-out character in the spotlight, Zdarsky elevates their story tremendously. The effects form this raise the stakes of the final act many notches. Zdarsky taps into the emotional connections these characters have to completely bring the small wins crashing down. The final moments of this chapter drop a huge blow to all parties involved, lighting the match for an explosive final run.

Loo and Alleyne feature a few different looks to God’s introduction. From Ian’s disbelief to Joy and Andrea’s amazement of his “creation”, it provides a few light-hearted moments before cranking up on the emotions. Once the group arrives back at the forest retreat, the tone shifts and focuses on the actions and feelings of a notable character.

The personal panels showcase a different side before ushering in an action that kicks off the conclusion. The imagery perfectly covers what each connecting character is feeling once the end begins. It exemplifies how there is more to this story than just supernatural beings. It’s about the caring each major character has shown for their small group and how important the final act is to sacrifice so much.

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions as a heavenly figure makes their presence known in another fantastic issue. Zdarsky’s emotionally layered writing raises the stakes with Loo, Alleyne and Cvetkovic crafting the calm before the upcoming final play. There’s no reason this series shouldn’t be in your collection by the end of New Comic Book Day.

Being one of the most powerful heroes in the 1940’s Alan Scott is on the US Government’s radar. Being pressured to have a higher profile with the JSA is one of those gifts and curses Scott endures. Scott has his own reasons of past experiences to keep a distance from working with others.

Readers witnessed a happier time with him and US Army solider John Ladd. Their happiness is cut short during a previous mission in 1936 known as Project: Crimson. During that mission, Ladd was killed by a mysterious red energy.

Fast forward back to 1941 and Scott appears to a disturbance at a bank. With being credited with saving some hostages, Scott senses something isn’t right. Further complicating matters is the body of Ladd has re-appeared. Before anyone can breakdown more, Scott wakes up in a frightening place: ARKHAM ASYLUM!

This issue begins back in New York City 1941. Scott and his trusted ally Charles Dickles are breaking down what has happened. However, this is all leading to a flashback from earlier as he now awakens in Arkham. Scott wakes up and sees his roommate Billie.

This leads to a moment of group therapy amongst Arkham residents. Readers see Scott was sent to Arkham as a form of “discharge” after Project: Crimson exposed his relationship with Ladd.

This becomes the start of a journey into Scott’s soul as he navigates being who he is and how he loves. Readers follow along as he faces the challenges of society in the 1940’s and where his story takes him into becoming a beacon of hope with the Emerald Flame. All the while, readers witness a final vision that gives a sense of what is really unfolding in Scott’s world and causing his misfortunes/ Get ready for a highly emotionally charged read of one of DC’s best heroes.

Sheridan delivers readers a story of triumph over overwhelming odds. Scott’s struggle to survive in Arkham is a very powerful moment in which conforming never is an option.

The interactions with him and Billie tell a bigger tale of heartache as Scott comes to terms with the loss of Ladd. Its’ fallout defines his character through tragedy.

The tale takes a heroic turn with its’ direction from here. Readers clearly see that through his actions, Scott was the perfect choice to wield the power of the Emerald Flame. The pacing gives enough breaks to tie it back to the current 1940s timeline and further cement Scott’s pledge to defeat this evil.

Sheridan’s writing is excellent in making that connection with the audience. It really made this issue stand out more for the feeling and emotion. Scott proves you don’t need powers to be a champion for good, you just need to live it in your actions. \

Tormey, Herms and Gattoni bring to life the true horrors of Scott in Arkham. The brief moments with Billie come across as pleasant and only lead to what transpires as a terrifying experience.

The struggles Scott faces inside Arkham pop off the panels through his expressions of frustration and sadness. This is on full display with the “Goodbye Now” portion.

The fallout brings things back into a more adventurous part of the story. The creative team builds up these panels into a superb full-page panel where Alan Scott becomes what he was always meant to be: a Hero and symbol of strength for those who need it.

This plays into an excellent parting visual of where things are currently. However, without the great work bringing the past to life, readers would be missing out on the full impact of this tale.

Through the powerful writing of Sheridan, Alan Scott’s journey into becoming a hero instantly wins over readers with this issue. The creative team of Tormey, Herms and Gattoni bring out the intense will of Scott as he presses forward even when society tries shoving back.

Alex Greer has been through quite the ordeal. After waking up next to a dead woman, Alex has been placed under psychiatric watch. With a vested party watching her every move, Alex tries to find a way out. This is easier said then done. After seeing the alleged victim working as a nurse, Alex is convinced more is going on. Will she get the chance to prove her innocence?

This chapter opens up with Alex waking up in the middle of a residential street. With kids poking her with a stick, Alex comes to and knows something is wrong. When she looks at a house, readers find out that Greer is “home”.

As she walks in, Greer sees her mother riving in pain. Readers see the relationship between the two is fragile at best (if at all). As the moments progress, it ends with a chilling message of blaming Alex.

Once it ends, Alex is back at the hospital. Restrained and confused, Dr. Kincaid is standing over her. The drama intensifies as Alex and the doctor have a conversation that doesn’t bode well for his patient. What over evils are lurking? Can Alex survive another night? More questions arise as Dr. Kinciad is just starting to impose his plan with Alex. Once the final image is revealed, any hope of survival sees further and further out of reach.

Phillips kicks this chapter off pushing Alex’s psyche into an uncomfortable state. Dealing with her relationship with her mother, Alex experiences a truly terrifying experience. Once it concludes, the reality of the situation might be worse than the dream itself.

The verbal chess match between Kincaid and Alex is a strong point to this issue. With everything falling around her, readers see Alex is sill holding onto hope that she will be free soon. Phillips takes this moment of hope and throws readers a curveball with the parting panels. Just when readers think they have an idea, Phillips changes the questions.

Boyle and Napolitano being with a nightmare that will shake readers to their core. The imagery of Alex’s mother reflects their broken state. The lettering only amplifies the fear being felt by Alex. For anyone who’s seen Napolitano’s work, this is no surprise as he is one of the best in the field. Its a connection easy for the readers to make.

This leads into another strong use of Yellow to establish where the story leads now. It’s complimented by a four panel page exemplifying the terror. As Alex descends further into the dangerous world of Kincaid, the art mirrors the hellish landscape. This builds towards the closing act with captures a facial expression that perfectly closes out another excellent chapter.

Phillps’ strong writing tears away another layer of Alex’s psyche with Boyle and Napolitano delivering magnificent imagery to ensnare readers throughout the pages. TITANS: BEAST WORLD #1 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we’re checking out the start of a major event happening in DC Comics. Since the “Dawn Of DC” has been in full effect, the premier super hero team hasn’t been the Justice League. It’s been the Titans.

Emerging from the “Teen” moniker, the heroes have finally stepped into the spotlight. With a brand new series started in 2023, Nightwing and company have been making some noise at the comic shops. Now poised to be the center of a DCU event, fans are excited to see how things fare.

TITANS: BEAST WORLD #1 by Tom Taylor, Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, Brad Anderson, and Wes Abbott ushers in a monster challenge for DC’s standout superhero team. Let’s check out the first chapter and see how things are going.

The story begins with a figure known as Brother Eternity addressing a mass audience watching world wide. His message is that of despair and dire extremes. “The World Is Ending” in his opinion. Readers see the conversation switches to one of hope as members of the Church Of Eternity have ventured into space. The claim is a discovery of refuge on Titan, the moon of Saturn.

Once landed, the crew (known as “Forevernauts”) discover a temple. Under Brother Eternity’s orders, they proceed with mics open. Eternity speaks in a lost language: ancient Tamaranean! The language is very familiar to one noted on-looker: Starfire!

Readers quickly see that the Forvernauts voyage was doomed from the start. With Eternity watching and smiling, an evil has been unleashed. Knowing danger at hand, the Titans make their way to Titan. Once they arrive, they see first hand what has been unleashed.

After making a daring escape from the failed rescue mission, Starfire debriefs the DCU heroes on what she witnessed: The Necrostar! Will the united front of the DCU’s most powerful be able to stop the creature?

With every crucial minute passing, the heroes brace for battle. Readers see one hero rise to the occasion as the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance. However, what happens next, no one will see coming. By the time the final page is viewed, a swift change in direction takes this story into a completely new direction. Brace yourself for impact as the next DCU event has arrived.

Taylor constructs an exhilarating start to the latest DC event. Right from the beginning, the pace moves things along fast enough to impact readers with how dangerous the threat truly is. Tying the Necrostar to a classic DC character throws a different look to the conflict at hand. Once the story moves to the middle act, Taylor takes a risk and it pays off in spades.

Putting the most unlikely Titan as the focal character opens up many avenues to take the story in. The interactions with Batman alone provide great moments. Readers don’t wait long to see how this unfolds. The creative use of powers is an element that a lasting impression. Once things roll into the final act, Taylor brings out multiple surprises that will keep readers guessing. This is great modern storytelling and fans will have much to enjoy with the writing.

Reis, Miki and Anderson paint the visions of a true event with the artwork. The Forevernauts’ arrival on Titan feels epic and the tensions readers will sense instantly. This is capped off with a strong two-page spread showcasing the evil unleashed.

The following image of Starfire addressing the DCU heroes makes a big statement as to where the Titans stand with the fellow heroes. The action visuals elevate the scenes up a few levels as they reflect the “event” feel needed. The emotional impact of the story is another key factor here, especially with Abbott’s lettering. The art team delivers a personal moment between two Titans than amplifies later in the story. With multiple full page panels mixed in, the issue has much that will capture fans attention, right to the shocking final visual.

The premier DC superhero team strongly steps up to embrace the spotlight in DC’s next big event. With Taylor’s creative writing lays a strong foundation while Reis, Miki, Anderson and Abbott give their excellent finishing touches to lock readers in for what looks to be one story that no one will want to miss!

SOMNA #1 (DSTLRY)

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new series debuting from DSTLRY! Over the summer of 2023, “The Devil’s Cut” gave readers an insight of what to expect from the upstart line. With some of the best creators in the business involved, it was a huge win with fans.

Since that point, the anticipation for more content from this line has been building. Recently, Gone #1 by Jock was released. Now, another entry from this imprint is hitting the shops with a great buzz behind it. Considering its’ creative team, there’s no doubt why fans are excited to check this series out.

SOMNA #1 by Tula Lotay, Becky Cloonan, Lee Loughridge, Dee Cunniffe and Lucas Gattoni brings an erotic horror element to the local comic shops with this series. Let’s take a closer look and see how this debut fares.

A woman named Ingrid is walking through a forest landscape. The narration leads readers to believe it is a dream. She is wakes up after being enamored to a cold reality. However, it appears that the dream might not be done as a figure lurks trying to connect with her on a physical and sexual manner.

Suddenly, Ingrid wakes up to her husband Roland, a bailiff, who’s trying to have her accompany him to a trial. Ingrid doesn’t want to go and this causes Roland to storm off. In response, Ingrid heads into the forest and looks overhead at her village with a roaring fire. It is no ordinary fire. It appears to be where witches were burnt at the stake.

The fire snaps her back into the dream-like world. Ingrid sees herself as the one in the fire. She’s snapped back to the present by Maja and her son. The conversation shifts to who was being punished.

Later that evening, Ingrid sits by a fire as Roland returns. As she tries to initiate passion, he scoffs it away. As they sleep, the mysterious stranger reappears in her dreams, connecting with her on a level Roland cannot. When she wakes, Roland is not as understanding to what she is describing.

How does Ingrid process her dreams? After the recent trial and reactions from the village, her thoughts wander. As her dreams intensify, Ingrid becomes entrapped between two worlds. As the closing act approaches, readers see where Ingrid leads to as an event occurs that sets her on an unforeseen path. The journey now begins that will have readers locked in until the next chapter drops.

The writing breaks down Ingrid into multiple stories. The first is the gruff relationship with Roland. The mood is tense and cold as their interactions lead to mounting tension with little middle ground. Ingrid comes across as a character yearning for more, which drives her to lean into her dreamscape.

Her path leads to the question of “Is perception really reality” as Ingrid walks a fine line throughout this issue. Knowing there’s a hint of danger in her dreams, the writing reflects her wanting more than she has and how scary that could be. As the story rolls into its’ closing portion, readers see how Ingrid inches closer to the edge. After the event transpires, there is a sense of looming fear of that should transpire next which leaves a lasting impression.

The art duties are split into two distinct areas. Cloonan handles the present time, featuring the interactions with the village. The mood is that of trepidation as the burning trial lingers on Ingrid’s mind. The body language of Ingrid and Roland shows disfunction and frustration on all parities.

This only adds to the significance of the dreamscape. Lotay paints a vivid landscape of wonder and anxiousness as Ingrid’s interactions with the figure intensify with each page. The art captures the raw emotions of the encounters bringing readers along to sense what Ingrid wants and sense her fear in the consequences. It all ties together with a striking final vision leading to more thrilling drama yet to be seen.

When the Flash does his routine multiverse checks, he discovers something that isn’t right. It connects to the World’s Finest: Batman and Superman. In earlier times, David Sikela aka Boy Thunder was a sidekick to Superman. While working with the pair, Sikela became lost in the timestream. Readers found out that where David is now is a place no one wants to go. It is the homeworld of “Kingdom Come”.

The pair travels to that world in hopes of rescuing David. Unfortunately for them, things don’t go as planned. David is not the same person that they previously encounter. He has a bit of an axe to grind with no issues of unleashing his power onto the pair.

This issue begins with David attacking Superman. Readers see how David’s anger is fueling this attack. The battle doesn’t fall on deaf ears as the Superman and Batman of this Earth catch wind of the altercation.

Once they arrive, the attention shifts towards an encounter of variations. The “Kingdom Come” Superman makes a dramatic entrance into the fight between David and our Superman. Meanwhile, Batman is left to face the “Kingdom Come” Batman with an experimental suit that readers might think looks familiar.

What happens when the heroes face their jaded versions? Fans are gifted excellent action as the story moves forward. Events build towards a dramatic entrance of someone who fans have been waiting to see. With this debut, things shift against our heroes. That point is driven home by a two page final image that is sure to have fans talking till next issue.

Waid taps into the emotional side of Superman as a driving point of this issue. Seeing his reaction to David’s new stat quo gave readers a clear cut indication how fast he could be corrupted by the wrong people. This is further laid out after Superman coming to terms about what has happened.

Waid also gives readers a fun introduction to the “Other” World’s finest. Waid also constructs a solid battle sequence involving more of the supporting cast. Pacing is near perfect leading into the final act. Once here, the story drops a big exclamation point with the final two -page panel. Another big win for comic’ best.

Dan Mora on the art duties here is near perfection. From the opening page of David’s attack to the show stopping final page, the panels have a different feel to themselves. In the first moments, Mora and Bonvillain set the pace for a fast-moving tale. The Battle of Superman officially kicks off with a splash full panel that is a fan pleaser.

The battle flows easily through the panels, giving off the magnitude of the encounter. Mora also gives Batman his time as well with a dramatic introduction for Bat’s Kingdom Come variant. The near full page moment announces that a major showdown is brewing. The introduction of the big character comes off splendidly as readers make an instant connection to who they are. The issue closes with an excellent two-page spread that puts the story in key paces before closing up shop for this round.

DC’s legendary pair crosses over into the land of “Kingdom Come” for another excellent issue. With Waid at the helm with incredible writing and Mora’s stunning visuals, This is a no brainer on how GOOD this series is. The bar is set very high and fans won’t be disappointed after concluding this chapter.

GODZILLA HAS APPEARED IN METROPOLIS!!!! Interrupting the proposal attempt of Clark Kent to Lois Lane, Godzilla is looming on the streets of Superman’s City. The Man of Steel engages while Lois and the city’s residents look on with fear and reservations.

The Justice League has had their own issues to deal with as a Lex Luthor led Legion Of Doom has their own plans in motion. However, when Toyman goes roguewith a powerful artifact, plans change quickly for all involved. Plus, King Kong has now entered the field as well?!

This current chapter opens up with Superman addressing the Godzilla matter head on. After the talk goes nowhere, the fighting begins. Godzilla swaps Superman away like a fly! Some of the Justice League is now en route to Metroplois to help. Readers see that Godzilla might not be the only monster the heroes will need to worry about.

The Monsterverse has now invaded the DC Universe via Toyman! How will the heroes fare against these new threats? What of the Legion of Doom? The action escalates as the heroes race to stop the new threats. Will they succeed? If the closing portion of the book is any indication, things look bleak with a shocking visual to send readers home with.

Buccellato presents the beginning of a heavyweight showdown for the ages. Superman versus Godzilla comes across as the major conflict all fans would want and expect. Buccellato paces the opening round with strong moments. Seeing the Man Of Steel challenged in such a manner adds another dynamic for readers to process.

The rest of the DCU Heroes are presented spotlight moments which is nothing but wins for readers. The story never lacks the “special event” feel which continues to illustrate how significant this story is. The writing is winning fans over with ease with another great issue.

Duce and Guerrero craft some unforgettable images for this latest chapter of pop culture icons. The initial “first blow” thrown between Superman and Godzilla is presented with an excellent two-page spread. It sets a high bar for the remainder of their fight. The introductions of the Monsterverse representatives also are gifted with a two page spread, instantly connecting with readers about the dangers happening.

The “Gotham Monster” imagery feels like its’ taken right from a Hollywood blockbuster. The parting shot of one character’s walk-off is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Heading towards the final moments, the art team throws in some interesting dynamics before bowing out of the second issue. It closes with an unforgettable final page spotlighting the threats unfolding on the DC Earth. An exceptional job from the opening page!

When a mysterious black substance coined “The Shroud” starts taking over the Earth, it leaves a trail of destruction and death. Years later, survivors have formed towers known as “Needles” to live on, hoping for a better tomorrow.

Jo and Canon are trying to find ways to survive in this dangerous new world. They come into contact with Pindle, who promises relief for a price. Readers see quickly all those promises disappear quickly. This is all due to Charon, a warlord in search of a stranger lurking around the Needle. Jo comes into contact with this stranger later and finds out he might hold a key to safety in this shroud era.

This chapter opens with a flashback to eighty days after the Shroud first emerged. Readers see the breakdown in society starting through a young Jo’s eyes. His parents killed. His world shattered. The chaos is everywhere.

As he prepares for the worst, he is rescued by Canon. The pair flies away to a new home. The moment impacts Jo greatly. It also influences him in the present time. With a black diamond in the possession of Rowan (the stranger Charon is seeking), Jo and his friends see this as a sign of hope. Can this be the break they have been searching for?

Readers see a valiant move as Jo and company dig further into the hidden agenda of Rowan. Can they stay out of Charon’s reach long enough to find out. The pages fill with wonder and excitement as a path is ventures with grave consequences for failure. As the final act unfolds, events lead to a parting image that can only mean this story is far from over.

The writing dives into the past, present and future of the world of the Shroud. The opening sequence gives readers insight to how quickly the world fell apart . Choosing to tell it through Jo’s eyes made for a solid connection to readers. The “present” of the book brings a deeper insight into the events unfolding.

Scott and Jack showcase the groups emotions as to what Rowan represents to their situation. The Snyders combine fantasy elements in with adventure flawlessly for where things lead. Pacing sets up for a fantastic finish. This story just keeps getting better and better.

Favoccia and Cogar continue to blow readers away with the impresssive visuals in this series. The flashback sequence fully brings to life the harsh new world young Jo now finds himself in. This concludes with a full page panel introducing readers right into the second act. The conversations reflect the the possibilities of Rowan’s cargo.

Readers can’t help but be caught up in the thrill of the adventure at hand. This is put on display with an exceptional two-page full spread. Just when readers think the bar can’t be raised higher, the parting image leaves no doubt of how incredible the journey is currently as its’ only just started.

Allowing diverse creators to bring unique approaches to the mythos has been nothing but a success. With two critically praised series, it has breathed new life into an already successful franchise.

Along with the animated series, the brand has made the transition to comic form with Star Wars: Visions by Takashi Okazaki in 2022. The brand is now returning with an all new story with one of the biggest and innovative creators at the helm.

The issue begins with a great introduction page explaining the major players of Kako (a “rebel” to Ankok and Sith descendant), Popo (a resident in Ankok’s territory), Gel (Kako’s android partner) and Tata (An Ankok advocate).

In the wake of a Sith Lord’s demise, a cult has risen with hopes of a new era centered around Ankok. As the followers have grown, some question the true intentions of the powerful figure.

The story begins with mysterious followers draped in red walking towards a guarded compound. Inside a figure is sitting on a throne at the top of the altar of worship. Once the red sun aligns itself through the compound opening, it shifts colors to black. Readers see how this fuels the figure sitting on their throne. This figure is Ankok.

With Tata serving as a guide, Ankok’s influence generates into her followers. Two in the crowd look with disbelief as the rest of the crowd disperses. They are Kako and Gel. as they head into town, the pair comes across Popo. The interaction is brief but leads Popo to follow the pair. Once on the outskirts of town, readers see a moment with Kako that sets in motion a plan to expose Ankok’s truths once and for all.

How does the gamble pay off? The moments following show a test of will as Kako takes the plan right to Ankok’s altar. The action picks up as the struggle becomes overwhelming. The outcome is sure to leave fans on the edge of their seats. This all builds towards a final image that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Momoko brings a vivid and unforgettable tale to life within these pages. From the initial stages, Ankok is menacing and intimidating right from the full page panel.

The followers’ rection to seeing this “god” is frightening of the power she possesses on them. This plays in contrast to Kako, who’s ever defiant of believing in what she is claiming.

The turning point in the story is the quiet moment involving Kako. Momoko gives enough insight to the readers without fully tipping her hand to what’s next. The final confrontation is set up perfectly will well-set pacing.

The visuals are breathtaking as the journey into the truth takes flight. Never does any panel lack the tension and excitement of the moments unfolding. Its’ conclusion will leave readers with many emotions but all will leave readers very pleased for this experience.

GEIGER: GROUND ZERO #1 (IMAGE COMICS VIA GHOST MACHINE)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the latest from a company who made a HUGE splash at NYCC this year! GHOST MACHINE, who’s roster of creators reads like an all-star lineup, is poised for a monster 2024 with a giant sized one-shot kicking off in January.

Luckily for fans, their wait isn’t so bad as one of the most notable Ghost Machine characters returns in a two part story that needs to be on fans’ radars at the shop.

GEIGER: GROUND ZERO #1 by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson and Rob Leigh spotlights the powerful force of nature in the Unnamed Universe. What secrets lie beneath the surface of the mysterious figure? Let’s take a deeper dive into this untold story, shall we?

Tariq Geiger is a survivor of a nuclear bombing that has transformed him into a walking weapon. While keeping his family inside a bunker, Geiger was caught outside when the bomb exploded. Unknown how he lived, Geiger has become a figure of legend.

When an overload exposed the bunker to be housing corpses of his family, Geiger unleashed his rage and set off on a loner’s path. Geiger became a surprise caretaker of two children who crossed his path. After that journey came to its’ conclusion, readers knew that the story was only just beginning.

For this story, the time is six months after the bombing began. The military has set up camp at what appears to be an amusement park. A man is monologuing themes of guilt and concern for his wife and what he as done. Readers see that he is Dr. Molotov. Molotov might be the man behind the bombs that destroyed the country.

The unit is in pursuit of Geiger. In exchange for helping, Molotov will be reunited with his wife. Can he succeed in this mission?

The action is mixed with more details on Tariq’s life before the bomb. The flashbacks show a different side to the radioactive drifter that leaves a huge impact with fans. The closing act ramps up the drama before bowing out with a parting visual that raises more questions on the already enigmatic lead protagonist. There’s no way anyone will be able to pass on seeing where things go from here!

One element of Ghost Machine that still rings rue in this issue is the focus on “Characters First”. Johns dives into the compelling drama with Molotov’s guilt for what he caused. The drive to see his wife counters the negative weight he carries, keeping readers locked. in.

However, the biggest moments come via the flashback sequences with Gieger. The heart-breaking tale of life before the bomb will level readers with the emotional pull. The conversations with his family showcases the deep love and drive he has for them. With dealing with his Cancer battle, Johns handles the moments perfectly with the interactions of those that matter most. The love for his family is the main driver for his ultimate choice when the bombs start going off. This all combines for a great read that stands out for the characters first.

Frank’s art features the various emotions of the two lead characters in this story. Molotov’s reactions to the army unit and Geiger vary with a sobering feeling of what he’s caused. Geiger’s time with his family and neighbors range from happiness to patience with a unfriendly resident. The time with the family hit the deepest connection as the art reflects the deep rooted love they possess even with the surrounding factors in play.

Once the story shifts back to present time, Frank (with Anderson’s fantastic coloring) makes the Geiger confrontation jump. The full page panel featuring Geiger at his most dangerous sets a high bar for the following action. This all leads to a stunning closing image which sets the stage for more revelations to follow.

The early days of Ghost Machine’s radioactive powerhouse comes to light with a strong debut chapter into his past. Johns drives home superb character writing while Frank, Anderson and Leigh elevate the words with magnificent imagery capturing the moments at hand. There’s no way to can’t be caught up in the story unfolding here. Make sure to pick it up on NCBD!

G.I. JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO #301 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the grand return of a legendary comic. Throughout the course of history, the G.I. Joe franchise has been one of the most popular in pop culture. From live action movies to the classic animated series to unforgettable toys, the brand has made its’ mark with fans for decades. One of the biggest win has been its’ comic book runs.

Since the 1940’s, there has been a connection between G.I. Joe and comics. However, if you talk to most comic fans these days, their first real memories were based in the 1980’s with the run via Marvel Comics.

With an impressive 155 issue run under the voice of Larry Hama, the series left a lasting footprint with fans. The rights had moved to a few different publishers since the series wrapped at Marvel in 1994. Last readers saw, issue #300 hit shelves in November 2022.

Fast forward to the summer of 2023 and little did fans know that spinning out of Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics’ VOID RIVALS would be the birth of the Energon Universe! The new landscape would be the home for both G.I. Joe and Transformers! With fans buzzing about what is coming, Skybound is bringing back the flagship book in a monster way with the voice of G.I. Joe leading the way once again!

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #301 by Larry Hama, Chris Mooneyham, Francesco Segala and Pat Brosseau picks up where things left off for the Real American Heroes! Let’s take a closer look to see how this return fares!

The issue opens up with a fantastic “who’s Who” recap of the history of G.I. Joe. Readers get a quick glimpse into G.I. Joe and Cobra and some of the key players involved. (Editor note: This is brilliant and I wish more companies did this with series)!

The main story begins with Duke and Wild Bill flying over Cobra Island. With a damaged plane, they’re trying to salvage the flight, not to mention the precious cargo of a Joe team on-board.

On the ground level, Dr. Mind-bender and Serpentor Khan (COBRA notables) have activated the Mutant Virus Bomb. Preferring this method to defeat the Joes instead of surrender, time is now a factor for the good guys. Outside of Mind-bender’s lair is another Joe squad led by Snake-eyes and Scarlett ready to go.

With the bomb activated, who will survive? The tension races as Cutter tries evacuating the team on the ground. With one note-worthy figure on-board the ship escaping, an event happens proving how dangerous and deadly this conflict is between GI Joe and Cobra.

Once the smoke clears, readers see how this series is a far cry from the cartoons and toys. THIS is vintage GI Joe comics. The aftermath will leave a lasting impression that you can’t help but want to make sure you don’t miss another issue of what is going to be another incredible run in the legacy of G.I. Joe stories.

In case anyone is diving in for the first time, Hama picks up right where he’s left off involving his story-telling. There is a reason he is synonymous with this franchise. Hama establishes the high stakes right off the bat and never lets up. His dialogue between Serpentor and Mind-Bender illustrates how unhinged Serpentor is and how far he’s willing to go to win.

On the flip side, no one brings out the voices of the Joes better. Duke and Will Bill’s story keeps escalating until it hits the perfect timing and mark. The escape from the island has its’ drama and one moment sparks a bigger match to explode later in this new series. The resolution of the bomb kickstarts a few avenues for the team to venture down in future issues. This is a great re-introduction issue for older fans and a solid jump-on for new readers wanting to find out about the hype.

Mooneyham adds a gritty style to the Joe imagery for this issue. It gels perfectly with Hama’s dialogue. The intro pages are an easy win with readers. Once they conclude, the art speeds events up quickly to layer the dangers of what Cobra is doing. This all leads to an excellent full page image of the teams trying to escape.

Since 2018, Abigail Jill Harding has been gifting fans with the stunning imagery of the “Ask For Mercy” series with Richard Starkings. With this new series, Harding is making her writing debut with a tremendous amount of buzz behind it.

The story begins with birds known as rooks flying around a graveyard. Behind guarding stone angels guarding a room, the sky has a red moon. A monstrous figure walks from the doorway with the angles weeping. As it approaches a gateway, the creature shapeshifts and flies away into the night sky.

The scenery moves to a castle on a hill. Inside lies a woman appearing on her deathbed. As she looks out the window, the creature shifts into a human form. Known as Darius Ravenscar, he kneels at her side. Readers sense there is a strong connection to the pair with the woman asking to relive their past. The stranger obliges and the story kicks into gear.

With imagery of a woman casting a spell into a fire deep in the forest, Ravenscar awakes inside his bed. Franticly running late, he makes his way into the city of Eborvik, towards the castle. Inside, he sees a woman named Princess Seraphina playing her harp.

The noticable admiration fills the scenes but there is one person not happy with what is unfolding. King Sitric, Lord of the Four Vales, orders Ravenscar to leave.

While leaving the castle, events start to unfold that drastically change the path of the story. What happens to Darius when he leaves? How does his life change? Readers see there is more than the King interfering with what Darius cares for. Fate has intervened in an unlikely way. The closing act covers a range of emotions before charging into its’ final moments. Once seen, the ending of the chapter foreshadows a deeper story lurking that has only just begun to come to the surface.

Harding paints a dark and complex story with her writing debut. Ravenscar instantly comes across as a tortured soul when he debuts. The elements of horror and hope dance through the dialogue as both he and Seraphina play into a world they hoped to have found together but never did.

The backstory of the pair dives into the brooding conflict with the King. Emotions run high as his majesty is determined not to allow events to grow further. The direction of the book shifts after the castle into unlikely places. This is where Harding’s writing goes up another level, connecting the doomed couple into fleeting moments of happiness. It’s these events that feel even further away once the closing moments happen. Once the chapter close, there is much left for readers to return and see how things play out.

The art reflects the moods and themes portrayed from the beginning. The full-page introduction image of Darius creates a bold debut locking readers in. This is also matched buy another full page panel of Darius after events have changed his future.

The use of coloring adds another layer to the saga at hand. Being a black and white book, once the red coloring is used, it signifies a change. It also announces the Rooks hovering overhead and where they connect to the shift in moments. The book is detailed with emotion and striking visuals. It has a great deal going on but paced enough where nothing feels out of place. The final panel brings the book to a screeching halt but leaves no doubt for things to come.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #3 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we’re following along a brand new tale involving one of DC Comics’ most notable father-son duos. In the mix of the Batman/Catwoman civil war, this series debut and has been lights out each issue! With the creators involved, it’s not hard to believe. The only questions fans have now is: where are we going after that ending for issue #2. Luckily, that answer comes in form of the latest issue.

With the events of “The Gotham War”, Wayne Manor is no longer at Bruce Wayne’s disposal. Batman sets up shop in a brownstone and continues his never-ending battle against crime. The Dark Knight’s status is heavily strained from most of his closest allies. There is one exception as Damien Wayne aka Robin is with his father.

After investigating a kidnapping case involving Dr. Kafira, the pair struggle to co-exist in their new stat quo. All the while, they need to stop a new threat emerging in Gotham: Shush. As their investigation goes deeper, it now puts them in Shush’s crosshairs while they try to protect the White Rabbit, who may hold a key to breaking the case wide open.

This issue begins with a flashback to a happier time. Damien is talking to Alfred Pennyworth, the longtime butler/ally/confidant to Bruce Wayne. The discussion is over when to stop learning. Damian’s stubbornness pushes until Batman walks in the room. Bruce gives the advice about not becoming too comfortable because that’s when one slips up.

It plays into the present moment. The Rabbit finds a way to escape her fate. The heroes try figuring out what happened until Shush intervenes. Readers get thrown a curve as Shush plans an unexpected surprise which draws the attention way for an escape….or does it?

With an escape comes a bigger chase. Fans are greeted to a high-octane trek through the streets of Gotham. Where it leads is to unexpected territory. Who comes out unscathed? These questions become the match lit for the final act. Once upon arrival, the final page drops another big bombshell on what is going on. Brace yourself for impact from this issue!

Williamson hits the gas petal on giving readers a solid mix of drama and action. Right from the beginning, the introduction involving Alfred hits heavy with readers. Considering the current stat quo of the Bat Family, seeing the advice given and received gave a great start to the comic. This became the perfect “on Your Mark” sequence because from here, everything sped up to reflect the heated action.

Events unfolded rapidly enough to invest the readers into the danger. This only took a small break before hitting the closing moments. Williamson pens a Damian that falls back on his brashness that makes him a fan favorite. The conclusion of the chapter is a great closing statement on an already must-read story.

Di Meo brings some incredible action sequences to the pages in the chapter. Once the Rabbit makes her run, a great two-page spread ushers in the excitement of the chase. The mix of character moments like Shush’s “connection” hit a big mark to break the pace up. However, fans will be blown away by the hunt for Rabbit. It legitimately feels like a Hollywood blockbuster film. Just when readers have a break, the art raises the danger up to a high mark. This is all before delivering on a final image that will have readers on the edge of their seats waiting for what’s next. Incredible work.

The story begins with Kate Kane aka Batwoman walking through the dangerous streets of Vahkar. With a journal entry of Amanda Waller narrating, Kane hears a noise and fires a batarang at a target. Readers see quickly, this is no ordinary target. The man who grabs the weapon in mid-air is none other than Luke Fox aka Batwing!

Fox approaches Kane, stopping her from the current mission at hand. Bringing up why she is miles away from Gotham, Fox gets an angry response from Kane. The conversation quickly shifts into a proposition from Fox. The deal: a new group whose sole intention is handling crisis before they happen. No jurisdiction, No reliance on others, No Batman.

After dealing with her first priorities, Kane accepts. The pair flies to Antarctica. Once they land, another member of the team greets them: The mysterious Drummer! What will this new unit discover?

Readers quickly find out there is many secrets below the ice that can have dire consequences. How does the trio fare? Readers get a fair mix of big suspense with heavy character driven points mixed in. The main theme of wonder becomes evident as there’s more to come with the most unknown corners of the DC universe set to be exposed.

There is no doubt of that once the last image is witnessed. It will leave a very notable impression on pat readers while getting new ones excited to see where things land now. Get ready for one hell of a ride as the landscape of the DC Universe is about to change forever!

Leave it to Lanzing and Kelly to hit readers with a deeper mystery at hand on top of an already impressive issue. The conversation and pairing of Kate Kane and Luke Fox steals this issue. Both coming out of the “Bat Family” tree and looking to make their own mark, the Hivemind sets up the duo for driving home the point of “this isn’t another Batman story”. There is just enough clues to see what’s happening but with how Luke speaks, there is more that he knows as things progress forward.

The addition of Drummer to the mix presents a nice wildcard to the “team.” Pacing moves very fast, building each moment up for a deeper blowout in conclusion. The resolution is a unique one but once again re-enforces Fox’s approach of this NOT being a super hero team. The closing moments plant a great easter egg before sending readers off with much to ponder. There are many directions things may lead to now, but rest assured, this will be one story not to miss.

Carey hits readers with some noteworthy reactions to Kane and Fox “negotiations”. The struggle of finding life post-Gotham is an easy message sent to the readers. The emotions pour for a bit before snapping back into Kane’s “normal” work. There’s a great full-page spread to introduce Drummer to readers that hits its’ mark. This is followed up by an impressive two-page image conveying what the trio is looking to explore.

The character moments run deep later in the story with a different way to approach the conflict. This is all capped off with a parting shot that fully sports this won’t be an easy story to classify or be patient to see where the next issue goes.

In a small town in Pennsylvania, there has been a string of unexplained murders. This has caught the attention of The Order of St. George. To investigate, they have sent BAIT, a White Mask with no arms and doesn’t speak. Posing undercover at a foster home, Bait meets Nannette, who has more of a connection to the case than she or even he realizes.

There is a striking connection to Bait’s sister Ashley and his tragic background that is clouding his judgement. Can he refocus on what is causing the killings before another victim is claimed?

This chapter begins with Bait processing what is causing the monsters to appear. He is also dealing with new instructions about how to approach this case. With time slipping away, a difficult choice needs to be made. The totem companion taking the form of cut-out dolls break down an uncomfortable truth. Nan is sick and the illness is causing the problems in the town.

The secret is somewhat figured out by more of the kids at the foster home. With the information becoming public, Bait has to act whether he wants to or not. Readers see what call Bait makes and it will throw some for a loop. The drama that has been building finally comes to a a head. Brace for major fallout ramifications as the final image leaves no doubt in anyone’s mind how deadly a choice can be.

Johns delivers an emotionally charged issue within these pages. The conflict concerning Bait is more that just a routine job. Johns makes the struggle very clear as Bait fights to come to terms with what he’s discovered. The totem makes for a perfect devil/angel on his shoulder trying to talk him into making a decision.

Pacing constructs a smooth transition to a strong latter portion of the book. Everything from the previous issue have built to a certain moment and it doesn’t fail to hit its’ mark. Just when readers come to terms with Bait’s direction, a closing image throws everything off. The forthcoming finale will be one fans are talking about.

Cadonici and Segala paint the picture of confliction and doubt through Bait’s eyes. Coming off such a tragic story last issue, the art mirrors the same overtones and lets Bait (along with the reader) time to let the gravity of the information sink into focus. The latter half of the book shines with the visual pouring with the deep-rooted feelings.

As the action unfolds, readers can sense the despair and fear running though the characters as a conflict merges. This all comes to a screeching halt with a huge full page final panel that will shock readers heading into the story finale.

The feelings of heart-break and danger flood the pages of this SIKTC spin-off, adding another layer to an already moving tale. Impactful writing sets up stunning visuals to carry Bait’s tale into the final moments. This is one issue you need to leave the local comic shops with in your possession. Fantastic work!

The issue kicks off with Optimus Prime talking with Spike Whitwicky. Optimus is admiring the beauty of Earth but accidently steps on a deer. Readers see how the pair spins out of that moment into giving a soft introduction into the other’s past. With the past issue’s events of losing Bumblebee and Jetfire, Optimus needed the moment to regroup and refocus for what is his mission now.

All the while, Starscream is leading the Decepticons into hunting down Energon. They attack a power plant and are preparing to harvest the energy to feast. The surrounding humans are not going down without a fight. They try resisting but are easily disposed of. Reinforcements are informed of the situation. One hero flies his fighter jet right into the crossfire of danger. Waiting in his path is Starscream, ready to end this interference once and for all. Who wins this round?

Readers witness a major player make their debut into the Energon Universe as the action ramps up. Once the encounter ends, an opening shot is taken that will not be the last from a Real American Hero. It appears they might have some back-up coming in this fight. The question lingering when the chapter ends is: will it be enough to save Earth?

Johnson wastes no time catching readers up to speed on what Optimus Prime is all about. The heart-felt conversation with Spike leads to a glimpse at the greater picture involving the conflict between Autobots and Decepticons. Readers bare witness to how Prime is adapting to his new home and fighting the good fight. They also see that he’s not alone in protecting the Earth from the unwelcomed.

The debut of the recognizable character feels like the big event longtime fans want it to be. The action is crisp and moves quickly. There is no wasted set-up. The closing moment of the battle will be one to get fans excited about what is coming down the road without question. The closing act brings the energy back to a normal level as more set-up work is done for an already engaging story.

The art is vintage DWJ. BIG action when it happens. Excellent character moments to invest the readers in-between. The opening moments with Optimus and Spike reflects the caring Optimus has while showing the pain he’s dealing with losing members he considers family. This is capped off with a near full panel shot of Cybertron as Optimus descibes it to the readers.

This is offset by the amazing high-flying action battle between Starscream and THAT character. The panels pop off the page with every motion taken by the combatants. Even when Starscream makes a deadly action, it is answered with a striking line of panels, letting the character have a closing moment to fully announce their debut to the EU. Leaving with a subtle reveal, the art closes the door on this chapter, leaving fans wanting more as soon as they can read it.

PUNISHER #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

For this entry, we are entering a new era with one of Marvel Comics’ most infamous characters. Ever since his debut in Amazing Spider-Man #129 in 1974, Frank Castle has been a walking force of nature against evil. With a vicious disregard for lawbreakers, the walking death machine has left a polarizing trail of moments with readers due to his complex history and views.

That all changed with the events of The Punisher #12 by Jason Aaron, Jesus Saiz and Paul Azaceta. Frank Castle is gone. That doesn’t mean there is no Punisher.

Punisher #1 by David Pepose, Dave Wachter, Dan Brown and Cory Petit sends a new character on the path of vengeance and justice. Let’s not wait another second and see what happens now, shall we?

The story begins at a destroyed house. The name “Garrison” is barely recognized on the weathered mailbox. The police have arrived to investigate the scene. Readers see the detectives at work. The home belonged to Joe Garrision. His wife Stephanie and two kids, Laura and Danny were killed in what is being called a possible gas leak explosion. After more investigating, a bomb is found in the wreckage…

Things shift to The Black Dragon Lagoon. A man is at the bar. Surrounding him is the Inner Demon Gang, known for wearing dragon-esque masks. The dialogue reflects they are protecting the man. The lights go out and a figure stands at the doorway. He asks for Sergei Federov aka The Sokovian. In naming his transgressions, The Sokovian is blamed for the explosion at the Garrisions.

Readers don’t have to wait long before the action begins. In-between the bullets and barbaric behavior, the talk switches back to the crime scene where the explosion is looking to have been a personal attack. Once back at the club, the body count has climbed and one man stands in the chaos: Joe Garrison.

As he flees the scene to an undisclosed location, the ruse of his “suburban identity” becomes exposed. With a SHIELD logo on the wall, the perceived “accountant” is far from ordinary.

As the news blares on the television, Garrison is the person of interest behind the bombing. That isn’t the only news as reports of the Inner Demon Gang massacre leak. The public account keeps hinting at the same question: Is Frank Castle back as the Punisher?

From here, readers see Garrison’s mission come to light. His path of vengeance leads him into another dangerous direction. Can this new “Punisher” survive long enough to find justice? With tension mounting, Garrison’s path leads readers into the battlefield and closes with a lasting impression this story is far from over.

With Pepose at the writing duties, there was no doubt fans would get their money’s worth. After reading this debut, the writing borrows the “best” of Frank Castle and merges it with Joe Garrison’s duality as SHIELD agent and mournful man. The opening act doesn’t hold back on establishing Garrison as a threat in his own right.

Once Garrison comes across a threat out of his league, Pepose gets creative in how to overcome the odds. This plays into the logo hidden in the lair background. Where Castle’s background and training was when he started is different than Garrison. The skill level is featured in the final act and leads to leaving its own mark on readers that a new era has started.

Pacing slows down just enough to give readers a break in the action before the bullets and blows start flying again. With just one issue, Pepose lets fans know the Joe Garrison era has kicked off with a bang.

Wachter and Brown bring the brutality of the character legacy with a new energy to it. Garrison’s attacks are displayed with more precision and patience than Castle’s. The conclusion of the Inner Demon Gang massacre gives readers a standout full panel page.

Once the main antagonist appears, the art holds nothing back at the savage technique Garrison uses to survive. The panels reflect the viciousness Garrison uses in his attacks. This is also compliments by a series of panels that raise the stakes with the pressure it builds. Once the shot is fired to end the conflict, there is no illusion to who is standing in evils’ way. The parting visual ends events the only way it can: leaving readers waiting for the next issue to drop. Solid job all around.

For this entry, With being one of the pillars of comics’ most exciting universe: The Massive-Verse, fans are talking about the latest adventure of one Bibiana Lopez-Yang. That’s right, we’re heading to San Francisco and checking on its’ protector via Image Comics and Black Market Narrative.

With the new responsibilities working for Morrow, Bibi’s plan of taking down the evil tech company was starting to take off. However, a mission in Jordan has led her into the crosshairs of someone she thought was a memory. Pyre, a member of her armed forces unit, has returned into her life with powers and a new agenda.

After the reunion, Bibi returned home to San Francisco after being gone for three days. She didn’t return alone as Pyre followed her back. Wanting to help her with her mission, Pyre draws attention onto himself in the form of Morrow forces. After an A.I.D. (Artificial intelligence Destruction) Protocol is given, Morrow’s mechs have now been given lethal clearance to end the threat of Pyre and Bibi is caught in the crossfire!

This chapter begins with Korin, a Morrow board member, trying to figure out who authorized the lethal force call. She brings this to the attention of Morrow CEO Jimmi Moss. However, Moss is more concerned about his deteriorating health condition. Moss addresses Korin to handle the problem of the protocol while he goes back to trying to solve his own issues.

Back at the fisherman’s wharf of San Francisco, Bibi and Pyre brace for action as they are now surrounded by mechs ready to fire. Readers see business escalate quickly as the pair fights to survive. Once the smoke clears, there are many questions left in the wake.

Who activated the protocol? What is the public reaction to this battle? How does Morrow respond? Events speed into the spotlight as the attack at the Wharf appears to be the tip off the iceberg. Bibi is now hopping out of the proverbial frying pan into the fire as tensions escalate out of control. Lucky for San Francisco, Bibi isn’t going down without a fight as the final page makes a bold statement before concluding the story for now.

Flores pushes Bibi into uncharted territory with the latest chapter. Seeing the stand-off with the mechs brought high tension as Bibi is trying to keep control before others get hurt. This counters Pyre’s play as he embraces the fight. Their personal history strains the overall mission of stopping Morrow.

Flores spins this into building drama which pays off later in the issue. The mystery behind who initiated the protocol is a nice twist to the overall tale. With a few suspects jumping to mind, readers can make their assumptions while watching the action sequences play out. As always, this series gives readers much to enjoy.

Carlomagno and Iacono features great action throughout the issue. The initial stand-off comes across as fast-paced and unforgiving as a lethal order mission would play out. Bibi and Pyre get moments to show off their abilities ending with a strong panel demonstrating Bibi’s powers to end this round.

The public reactions to recent events carry weight as the anger and frustration bleeds over from the crowd to a board room meeting that plays a big part in connecting with readers. This is a small break until the next round begins. The art team speeds up the frantic pace of the battles without mis-stepping any key moment. This all comes to a head with the closing image which will have fans excited to see what happens next.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The presence of Pyre brings the fight home to San Francisco with another Massive-verse fantastic issue. Flores mixes in big action while quietly laying a foundation for a bigger payoff later with excellent writing. Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey add the finishing touches for a visual experience that will have fans locked in from the opening page. There’s a reason why The Dead Lucky is a New Comic Book Day staple for fans. Don’t miss out!

For this entry, we are checking out a brand new series hitting Comixology Originals! Comic fans might recognize the creative team from the Dark Horse Comic Savor but this time around, there’s no food fighting going down. Neil Kleid (The Panic) and John Broglia have something more grounded and felonious brewing within these pages.

Nice Jewish Boys #1 by Kleid, Broglia, Ellie Wright and Sarah Litt delivers a tale of bonds broken and dangerous choices. Let’s take a deeper dive into what is unfolding here, shall we?

The story begins with a narration from Jake Levin. Levin is a a Modern Orthodox Jewish man who is breaking down a stereotype involving money. Readers see a man getting stabbed with money falling from his hands. Once the dialogue stops, Levin is standing with blood on his hands and a dead body at his feet.

Events shift back in time to a bar mitzvah. With everyone celebrating, there is one man sitting and breaking down the cost of the event: Levin. Knowing that his son was having a bar mitzvah fast approaching, Levin feared how much the financial burden would be. Levin’s train of thought is broken when an old friend sits down next to him: Chaim Davidovits.

Davidovits is a very successful businessman. Readers see a flashback of how he, Levin and Lenny Klein have grown up over the years. After the party, Davidovits catches up with Levin and the money issue is brought up. Trying to help his old friend out, Davidovits makes Levin a job offer he can’t refuse writing promotions for his kosher appetizing stores. However, as the saying goes…. if its’ too good to be true, it most likely is.

What happens next throws Levin’s world upside down. An unexpected event transpires that starts a domino effect with Levin. Just when he thinks he’s a step ahead, it quickly turns out to be the farthest from the truth. Even with the downward spiral, no one will see the final image coming throwing more gas on an already raging inferno of drama and emotion.

Kleid makes a strong, pyramided debut with the debut issue. The first arc gives a detailed insight into Levin’s mounting pressures of providing. Readers can empathize with how he is pridefully trying his best but knows he’s failing. The break to establish the friendship with Davidovits builds off the beginning to show where Levin feels his status is in comparison. Once the job offer is made, they story begins its transition. It levels the status of Levin to where things feel stable.

This theme doesn’t last too long as the event takes place to start the third act and sink hope quickly. The pace speeds up showing how fast things are falling apart. Levin’s reactions shows the fear of knowing what has just happened. Klied sprinkles in some great twists before ending on a major one, capping off an impressive opening issue.

Broglia and Wright provide the backdrop of normal suburbia while hiding the true themes at play. The opening sequence makes a loud statement. This is capped off with a blunt full page panel that sets the stage for bigger events to come. Levin’s expressions while at the bar mitzvah grows the sense of overwhelming doubt in his current status.

The interactions with Davidovits mirrors the old friends we grow up with in a timeless moment. Once that event is re-created, it symbolizes the end of childhood hope and the new wave of grown up responsibility. This gets amplified with the events later in the book. The reveals later in the issue hit their marks with Levin’s body language telling a greater story. With all those strong panels, nothing will prepare readers for when the last page hits and the last panel represents. It’s a great way to cap off the strong debut chapter.

Under the veil of friendship and family, Kleid, Broglia and Wright establish a devious tale that tests pushing a man to his breaking point. Fantastic writing fills the vivid imagery to construct a story that would be criminal to pass on reading. Make sure to check this out on New Comic Book Day.
