Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are entering a new era with one of Marvel Comics’ most infamous characters. Ever since his debut in Amazing Spider-Man #129 in 1974, Frank Castle has been a walking force of nature against evil. With a vicious disregard for lawbreakers, the walking death machine has left a polarizing trail of moments with readers due to his complex history and views.

That all changed with the events of The Punisher #12 by Jason Aaron, Jesus Saiz and Paul Azaceta. Frank Castle is gone. That doesn’t mean there is no Punisher.

Punisher #1 by David Pepose, Dave Wachter, Dan Brown and Cory Petit sends a new character on the path of vengeance and justice. Let’s not wait another second and see what happens now, shall we?

The story begins at a destroyed house. The name “Garrison” is barely recognized on the weathered mailbox. The police have arrived to investigate the scene. Readers see the detectives at work. The home belonged to Joe Garrision. His wife Stephanie and two kids, Laura and Danny were killed in what is being called a possible gas leak explosion. After more investigating, a bomb is found in the wreckage…

Things shift to The Black Dragon Lagoon. A man is at the bar. Surrounding him is the Inner Demon Gang, known for wearing dragon-esque masks. The dialogue reflects they are protecting the man. The lights go out and a figure stands at the doorway. He asks for Sergei Federov aka The Sokovian. In naming his transgressions, The Sokovian is blamed for the explosion at the Garrisions.

Readers don’t have to wait long before the action begins. In-between the bullets and barbaric behavior, the talk switches back to the crime scene where the explosion is looking to have been a personal attack. Once back at the club, the body count has climbed and one man stands in the chaos: Joe Garrison.

As he flees the scene to an undisclosed location, the ruse of his “suburban identity” becomes exposed. With a SHIELD logo on the wall, the perceived “accountant” is far from ordinary.

As the news blares on the television, Garrison is the person of interest behind the bombing. That isn’t the only news as reports of the Inner Demon Gang massacre leak. The public account keeps hinting at the same question: Is Frank Castle back as the Punisher?

From here, readers see Garrison’s mission come to light. His path of vengeance leads him into another dangerous direction. Can this new “Punisher” survive long enough to find justice? With tension mounting, Garrison’s path leads readers into the battlefield and closes with a lasting impression this story is far from over.

With Pepose at the writing duties, there was no doubt fans would get their money’s worth. After reading this debut, the writing borrows the “best” of Frank Castle and merges it with Joe Garrison’s duality as SHIELD agent and mournful man. The opening act doesn’t hold back on establishing Garrison as a threat in his own right.

Once Garrison comes across a threat out of his league, Pepose gets creative in how to overcome the odds. This plays into the logo hidden in the lair background. Where Castle’s background and training was when he started is different than Garrison. The skill level is featured in the final act and leads to leaving its own mark on readers that a new era has started.

Pacing slows down just enough to give readers a break in the action before the bullets and blows start flying again. With just one issue, Pepose lets fans know the Joe Garrison era has kicked off with a bang.

Wachter and Brown bring the brutality of the character legacy with a new energy to it. Garrison’s attacks are displayed with more precision and patience than Castle’s. The conclusion of the Inner Demon Gang massacre gives readers a standout full panel page.

Once the main antagonist appears, the art holds nothing back at the savage technique Garrison uses to survive. The panels reflect the viciousness Garrison uses in his attacks. This is also compliments by a series of panels that raise the stakes with the pressure it builds. Once the shot is fired to end the conflict, there is no illusion to who is standing in evils’ way. The parting visual ends events the only way it can: leaving readers waiting for the next issue to drop. Solid job all around.

No Frank Castle, No Problem. Pepose blends the classic Punisher themes with a new character with excellent writing. The action flies off the pages via Wachter and Brown’s vision of unrelenting fury. With the action cranked up to a fever pitch, there is no way you want to miss this book when it drops on New Comic Book Day!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of an explosive crossover from DC Comics. Anything Gothan City is the battlefield, readers know Batman will fight anyone to the end to defend it and his vision of justice. However for this fight, it’s his “Bat Family” providing the opposition. Lading the charge is his lover/enemy Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.

The battle has morphed out of a simple question of ethics into a no-holds-barred fight leaving nothing but shattered ties and a city prime to be conquered in its wake.

Due to the fallout from “Knight Terrors”, Bruce Wayne aka Batman was asleep for quite some time. When he finally wakes up, Gotham City’s crime rate has drastically been reduced. A new initiative has been started amongst the criminals of Gotham. The mastermind behind it? None other than Selina Kyle aka Catwoman!

Selina has been teaching the lower level of criminals a “Robin Hood” style of activity. The movement has lowered crimes in Gotham to astronomical records. This doesn’t sit well with Batman, as he sees all crime as universally bad. It also doesn’t help that Zur-En-Arrh, his emergency back-up personality is active due to the Knight Terrors ramifications. The cold-hearted mindset decrees that Selina’s operation must be stopped after a life is lost during a heist.

Sides have been taken amongst the Bat family. Drastic actions have been taken by Batman with no remorse. Of all the victims, no one was hurt more deeper than Jason Todd aka The Red Hood with the actions of the possessed Dark Knight. All the while during the Bat family civil war, Vandal Savage, the immortal nemesis of the DCU, has swooped in making a play to conquer Gotham. Now with the battle at the breaking point, who walks away the winner of Gotham City?

This issue begins with Scandal Savage, daughter of Vandal and formerly aligned with Catwoman, organizing Selina’s former pupils. They have been given their orders to get the meteor fragments which will give Vandal strength of unknown levels. Meanwhile, Tim Drake (Robin) is heading to investigate an explosion. When he arrives, he and readers aren’t ready for what’s next.

Led by Two-Face, a group of Batman’s rogues make their way down the street, nearly killing a few civilians. Overwhelmed, Tim is taken hostage.

All the while, Batman, Catwoman and Jason are meeting where it appears the real Bruce has come back to the fold. Readers witness a tremendous speech and plea to the family to come together to stop Vandal’s attack. The question now is: Can the broken family refrom and save Gotham?

The answer is aimed to please, but with overwhelming odds, t might not be enough. The ending gives this story fitting epic moments with one especially outshining them all. Its’ fall-out looks to set up a new stat quo but one can’t help but wonder if the bonds have been broken beyond repair?

The writing team bring a great deal of noteworthy events to the finale. Seeing the “old” Batman re-emerge to inspire the family was a solid way to shift gears towards the common enemy of the Savages. At the end of it all, Justice is what both warring sides of the Bat-family want, with Selina being the voice of reason. There are excellent moments with the various family members teaming up but none bigger than “The Cat and The Bat”.

Throughout their history, there’s few like the pairing of Bruce and Selina. Seeing them pair up in the later issues gives readers a reminder of why this conflict has been so personal. The writers carry this mood into the final battle. There’s a fair mix of action and drama that is sure to please.

The epilogue is one that might throw some off. It feels like a reset until something re-surfaces which leaves some questions heading into the future of Bruce Wayne. Overall, it has the “big fight feel” that you ant to see in a finale. How long it lasts will be the thought moving forward.

The art captures the intensity of the ending at hand. the introduction of two-Face and the rogues makes a big splash at how far Gotham has crumbled due to the war. It’s followed up by some great action panels with more of the family involved. The meeting between Bruce, Selina and Jason carries a bug emotional burden of Bruce’s actions.

This reflects later in the issue when Bruce and Selina pair up. There is subtle facial expressions indicating the extreme highs and lows reflecting the conflict and its surrounding factors. Readers will have a lasting impression of what transpired and an idea of where things lead now.

FINAL GRADE: 8 OUT OF 10

When the smoke clears, the fate of Gotham City is made evident to readers with a fitting conclusion to the Bat family civil war. With themes reminding readers about the bond of family through the writing and art, This crossover conclusion is sure to have fans talking on New Comic Book Day.

BLACK SIGHT #2 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Alex Greer is an American exploring Amsterdam in 1964. After leaving a club with a stranger, the next morning Alex finds herself waking up to a dead woman. Being taken away by the authorities , communication issues are halting her from proving her innocence. This is much to the liking of someone with a vested interest.

This issue begins with a man in a cell. He says his name is “John”. The orderlies attending to him are telling him his name is “Gary”. After a struggle, “John” is subdued. He is forced to endure electro-shock treatment until he says his name is “Gary”.

Meanwhile, Alex is being examined before being processed in a mental institution. Readers witness the new surroundings for Alex as a bleak place of hope. A fellow resident leaves her with haunting words of advice before the final act begins. Once that starts, the spiral into madness takes a great hold. The last image of this story will leave readers with no doubt Alex’s nightmare is only just beginning.

Phillips dives into the terrifying truth of what Alex is about to endure. The “John” portion of the issue exposes the inhumane way of breaking down the patients in the mental hospital. It is a cold, hard truth to the greater mystery Alex is now involved with. Phillips sets this up with no punches pulled, making a strong statement right off the bat.

Once Alex enters the story here, the pace is slowed down to let the mood encompass the reader. Each action Alex takes is given enough time to slowly build for a greater moment later. This gives a contrast to the remainder of “John”’s story, which speeds up enough to set the final act in motion. Once the story swings back to Alex, it doesn’t slow down until the story’s conclusion. The stage is set for both Alex and “John”s key players to cross paths soon which will make for quite the memorable encounter down the road.

Boyle’s vision of events mirror the hellish landscape of Alex’s tortuous saga. The cruel treatment of “John” connects with readers about how unforgiving the plans for him and Alex are. The anxiousness and uncertainty of Alex pops off the pages with Boyle leaving nothing held back.

The interactions with fellow residents vary but unite under the sense of small hope things will be alright. That feeling carries through until the final act. Boyle’s art constructs the big surprise heading into an lasting final image to close this chapter out with.

The world of Alex Greer descends further into chaos with an impactful chapter. Fear and deception loom overhead with Phillips’ superb writing being complimented by Boyle and Napolitano’s moving visuals and lettering. Readers will be locked in from the opening page and won’t want the story to end.

For this entry, we have arrived at the penultimate issue of the current story arc from an award winning series. Ever since its’ BOOM! STUDIOS debut, the saga of Erica Slaughter has entranced readers with its powerful storytelling and chilling terror. Racking up honor after honor, the series is poised (post SAG strike) to make a huge splash on Netflix. In the meantime, comic book readers are treated to a deeply intense tale that is poised to combust!

Tribulation, New Mexico has been the epicenter of the latest arc. With a family being violently murdered by the Duplicitype (who now has taken the form of a certain monster hunter), the lone survivor, Gabi, has been under the custody of Riqui. With a growing body count, Erica Slaughter has re-emerged from being off the grid to end the killings.

Her return hasn’t gone unnoticed as the Order Of St. George has unfinished business with her. They have unleashed the deadly force of nature known as Cutter to eliminate her. With personal attacks breaking her like the death of Big Gary, readers have seen why Erica is a character that has won fans over. Through this fire, Erica remains standing and poised to finally end the evil once and for all.

This issue opens with Erica practicing riding a horse. Erica needs to strike from a distance to kill the Duplicate. Riqui and Erica have a tense conversation knowing what is about to unfold. With poisoned arrows and bow ready, Erica is ready. Riqui has doubts.

While this is happening, Gabi is inside the secluded ranch where the three are hiding. Unfortunately, someone else has found them: CUTTER! As Gabi screams, the monster starts approaching from up the road! The tension is so heavy as reader brace to a fight that truly feels grave. What will Erica do? The pace speeds up to an absolute jaw-dropping final panel. Brace for impact because the drama hits the wall hard with an unforgettable issue!

Nobody does slow build drama better than Tynion. Nobody. this might sound like a broken record at this stage but WOW, the structure of this issue alone is amazing! The conversation between Erica and Riqui plays off as a final goodbye. The feelings are doubt and struggle. This adds so much to the eventual moment of the fight.

The appearance of Cutter is fantastic as she strikes in such a manner that makes her a villain you love to hate. The pacing ramps into high gear once she appears and never looks back. readers can’t help but be locked in and be floored at the closing moments. If there was any question of why this series gets so much hype, read this issue.

Dell’edera and Muerto craft the “calm before the storm” with poise. The opening sequence seems peaceful but filled with tensions. The mannerisms of both Erica and Riqui do not seem confident but they press forward. The panels where Cutter strikes hit readers with intense danger. This is upstaged (briefly) with a full page shot of the monster/Erica combo walking towards the ranch. The art depicts the franticness of events with subtle glee from Cutter looming. The ending panels will leave readers in pause and the wait for next issue will be extremely tough. What an issue!

The slow build pays off huge as a showdown months in the making explodes off the pages of an undeniable issue. Tynion, Dell’edera and the team impact readers with superb writing and intense art to send Erica Slaughter into her gravest challenge yet. This is an absolute must buy on New Comic Book Day!

JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. GODZILLA VS. KONG #1 (DC COMICS/LEGENDARY COMICS)

In one corner, you have the greatest heroes of the DC COMICS universe: The Justice League. In another corner, you have the “King Of All Monsters”…GODZILLA! Completing the trifecta is the “Eighth Wonder Of The World”…KING KONG!

JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. GODZILLA VS. KONG #1 by Brian Buccellato (NO/ONE, MIDLIFE), Christian Duce, Luis Guerrero and Comicraft brings these characters together with a story that needs to be read to be believed! Let’s check out this crossover and see what’s unfolding, shall we?

The story begins on top of the Daily Planet. A table is set for two with a happy couple seated. Readers see one of comics’ greatest couples enjoying their time alone: Clark Kent and Lois Lane. It’s a normal conversation which leads to Clark dropping to one knee to propose! However, the happy moment has an uninvited guest crash the party. GODZILLA HAS ARRIVED IN METROPOLIS!!!!

Meanwhile at the JLA Watchtower twelve hours prior, another dynamic duo is watching footage of Superman fighting crime. Readers know this pair as Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and The Flash (Barry Allen). Their commentary shows concern for Superman burning himself out for trying too much. they’re interrupted by Supergirl, who mentions she is filling in for Clark during his “vacation” after proposing. They notice on the screen Clark is flying into battle against Titano. By the time the rest of the Justice League arrives to help, Superman has saved the day.

All the while, readers find out that Titano was just a small part to a bigger scheme hatched by some familiar villains. How things play out will catch readers off guard. The latter portion of the book steers events into a clear direction that will please fans. The closing moments will leave no doubt that this is one story you absolutely can’t afford to miss!

Buccellato sets the stage for a truly memorable event. The introduction to Godzilla in the story establishes how big the moment is. The same can be said when Kong debuts as well. Buccellato gives the Superman sub-plot enough time to connect with readers, providing a welcomed break between all the action. With all the pop-culture titans involved, the pacing moves very smoothly. The villains making their moves behind the scenes is pure superhero storytelling bliss. How all the parties ultimately come together is a prime example of this. For anyone who questioned how this would all work out, those fears were quieted quickly. This is going to be something special within this series.

Duce and Guerrero leave a lasting impression on readers with the Hollywood feel of this initial chapter. The two-page spread introduction of Godzilla has that “big fight feel” that the King of Monsters demands. The conversations involving Superman’s “Big Question” reflects the team’s happiness for their friend via their reactions. The action sequences carry that classic “Saturday morning” vibe that readers have grown up with and love. The latter portion of the book offers a few more grand entrances before departing on a final image that one can’t help but be excited for what’s next.

Combining some of Pop Culture’s biggest characters in one book is a challenege onto itself. The creative team of Buccallato, Duce and Guerrero give fans an unforgettable first impression with incredible writing mixed with energetic visuals. There’s no way after reading the first issue readers won’t be counting down the days for the next round at the LCS!

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #20

For this entry, the best superhero book at the comic shops returns with its legendary creative team in tow. In this incarnation of the tales of two of DC Comics’ most legendary characters, the benchmark has been raised to a whole new level. Each of the story arcs thus far have won fans over left and right with its’ creative takes. Now heading into a brand new arc, the creators are referencing a classic story as the backdrop.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #20 by MARK WAID, DAN MORA, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands heads into a brand new story arc. Let’s not wait another second and jump into the new story, shall we?

The story begins with The Flash running through the Multiverse. Readers see his narration play out explaining his actions. Mapping the Multiverse is something the Scarlet Speedster watches over with all the possible other worlds coming into play. On this run, The Flash sees someone that causes alarm. The shadow is very well known to longtime DC readers. New readers may be thrown ff for now, but they will find out soon enough.

Meanwhile in Gotham City, The trio of Batman, Robin and Superman are set to face off with some of Wonder Woman’s rogues. That is until the Flash crashes the party. Superman receives some news concerning David Sikela aka Boy Thunder, a sidekick that vanished in the timestream a while back. The Flash may have found him but he’s not in a good place.

Readers see the plan is to retrieve David. However, the place they are going is not an easy place to survive. It is a historic place in DC Comics Lore. David is on a world where the trinity of heroes fans know is vastly different. they are on the homeworld of Magog. The world is that of “KINGDOM COME”!!!!!!! Get ready for one hell of an adventure as the World’s Finest are going to be tested like never before!

Waid returns home to one of his most iconic stories in all of comic history. If fans are not familiar with that story (painted art by Alex Ross), make a point to go read it! The introduction by the Flash is a great introduction to Flash’s consistent dabbling into the timestream. After seeing what he did, Superman wastes no time into heading right into the unknown.

The nobility of not breaking a promise plays right into his character. What he and Batman find brings back much nostalgia to the classic story. The drama builds perfectly heading into the closing act with ends reflecting the world they are now stepping into.

Mora returns in a monster way to the series! The introduction with the Flash pops off the pages with two full page, detailed panels. Once the title heroes jump into the new world, the art reflects the somberness of the classic story. There’s another powerful two page spread which drives the point home about the terrifying world of “Kingdom Come”.

The other nods to the classic story play out strong to capture fans’ attention. This leads into a solid ending with a final image building more anticipation for what’s coming next issue. A story revisiting the past may be difficult but when Mora is on art, nothing is impossible to pull off.

NYCC 2023 - DAY 1 RECAP

For this entry, we’re recapping Day 1 of the biggest weekend of 2023 for Pop Culture : New York Comic Con! With a very excited crowd inside the Javits, there have been some headlines making some noise on Thursday, October 12th. The ODPH podcast is attending as press and here are the stories that caught our attention:

• DC Comics announced the return of the “Elseworlds” imprint. If readers are not familiar with the line, it is an imprint that allows creators to tell imaginative tales involving the great DC heroes outside of the current timeline. “Kingdom Come: and “JLA: the Nail” are some classic examples of stories that fit this line. “Batman: Nightfire” and ”Green Lantern: Dusk” are two of six new titles that are goign to be on fans radars when they debut in early 2024.

• GHOST MACHINE is a brand new company that made a BIG splash at NYCC. Led by Jason Fabok, the new company looks win over fans with titles like Rook: Exodus leading the way. I had the chance to catch up with Jason at the Ghost Machine booth and trust me, we will be hearing much about this imprint heading into the new year. Stay Tuned.

• For fans of The Walking Dead, there was much news to be excited about. It was announced at the panel that #TheOnesWhoLives, The LONG awaited project featuring Rick and Michonne is FINALLY set to air at February 2024. Fans caught a glimpse of what to expect during the panel. It was also announced that Melissa McBride is set to join the “Daryl Dixon” series which wraps up season one on October 15th.

For this entry, we’re checking out a debut issue from MARVEL COMICS that is guaranteed to be the talk at the comic shops! Long time Captain America readers know the name “CAPWOLF” from one of the most unique stories in the historic run of the late Mark Gruenwald. Since those issues in 1992 (#402-408 with art by Rik Levins), that version of the Sentinel Of Liberty has left a lasting impression.

Now 31 years later, the character returns but with a brand new story led by a fantastic creative team.

The year is 1944. The Location: Paris, France. A familiar face is taking fire from Nazi forces on the attack. Readers instantly recognize Dum Dum Duggan as he ducks for cover. A soldier gets the drop on him and prepares to shoot. Luckily for Duggan, someone else had a quicker draw. Nick Fury makes the save and he didn’t come alone. The legendary Howling Commandos are right behind!

With an enemy tank rolling towards them, Fury and company draw the plan up. Drawing fire, Fury gets pinned down after an explosion. With no chance to move, the tank turns its’ barrel towards him. It fires! However, luck has returned the favor and found him this time. Captain America blocks the blast with his shield!

Handling matters, Cap destroys the tank and gets the Commandos out of harms way. Regrouping at their medical tent, Cap and the team are informed of a plot know as “Wolfsschanze” or “Wolf’s Lair”. Fury is too banged up to lead so the Sentinel of Liberty is given the task to lead the unit on this highly dangerous mission.

What lies at the Wolf’s Lair? Something more sinister than they could comprehend! Cap and the team make their charge into the unknown. Readers quickly see that the good guys might have bitten off more than they can chew with what they find. When the final moments hit, the status quo between everyone is drastically changed. Things are only just starting but get ready for one hell of an adventure!

Just seeing Phillips’ name in the credits, readers knew this was going to be something special. After finishing the last page, there is no doubt about it. The opening act keeps things very grounded and fully captures the World War II period. Phillips also dives into the disconnect between Cap and the Commandos as things weren’t always great between them. Playing off the super-powers angle, the conversations reflect the distrust and anxiousness of the times.

The overall story ties in a touch of horror to the historical action parts. It’s a great twist to see the final act unfold because readers might forget: Superheroes were just debuting in this area. Anything of the supernatural sort is not common. The Commandos reactions play a big part in connecting that to the readers. The final act provides a solid cliffhanger to what is a smash debut issue.

When I mentioned about names in the credits, knowing what Magno can do with an action scene really made excited to see what he could do here. Right from the opening page, the panels mirror the hellish conditions of War. The panels are bold and dynamic. Readers can feel the danger of the battle beaming off the pages.

Magno and Grundetjern throw in some excellent half-page panels of Cap fighting that make a huge impact. These are somehow topped by a full page shot of Cap and the unit heading into battle. The art team perfectly caps (no pun intended) off the chapter will another great full-page shot that will be n reader’s minds until the next chapter drops.

Taking one of the most intriguing versions of Captain America and crafting a fresh historic take around him is no easy task. Combine Phillips’ stellar writing with the electric artwork of Magno and the team and readers get swept up into an incredible story that can’t be denied on New Comic Book Day!

The issue begins with a flashback sequence with a young Damian Wayne/ Damian is fascinated with a small bat looming around him. The League of Assassins isn’t feeling the same way and Mistress Harsh kills the bat in front of the young boy. The killing is symbolic to teach Damian a lesson. The message being: Don’t get attached because feelings are a weakness.

The story returns to present time where Batman is being attacked by a swarm of Bats! With last issue’s events, a mysterious assailant named Shush has shot Batman with a gas pellet. The gas turns the bats violent. Batman is ready to take an extreme action to end this situation until Damian talks him out of it. With plan B in place, the bats are handled but more questions loom.

Meanwhile, Shush starts planning her next moves against Batman. Readers bare witness that there’s more of a personal connection going on than what was originally thought. Dr. Kafira is still in her custody with an ominous voice lurking in the shadows.

How does the dynamic duo bounce back from this? The stage is set for classic detective work as more evil forces are at hand. Both Bruce and Damian have challenges to face but those events come full circle as a dramatic action takes place leaving readers gasping for the next issue to drop.

Williamson continues to pressure the family dynamic while slowly revealing the secrets behind this latest case. Shush’s actions elude to a more personal attack and motives. Readers bare witness to more forces at work but little reveals to the overall picture. The dynamic duo’s banter plays off each other well.

Considering how strained their past few months have been, seeing the slow mending of fences has been a great touch to the book. The action is spaced out well giving ample time to develop the story. The final segment starts building up the tension to a final explosive page. There’s much to enjoy here.

Di Meo and Wands gives readers a high-energy book to look at for this chapter. There’s an excellent two-page full piece that brings in the dangers with the bats. Shush makes a splash with readers overseeing her attack on Batman. The panels involved her scheming prove to build more foundation to an already strong story.

The “family bonding” moments between Bruce and Damian continue to be a fantastic part to this series. Di Meo brings out the emotions of the family rebuilding itself while separating the heroic alter-egos. Excellent final page to close events on with a great cliffhanger.

The next chapter in the Dynamic Duo’s legacy doesn’t falter in delivering a great story. Williamson’s strong writing balances a fractured family with the quest of justice exceptionally well. Combine that with Di Meo and Wands electrifying work and you have the recipe for a can’t miss series. Don’t miss this on New Comic Bok Day!

With the latest phase kicking off with DUCK AND COVER #1 with Rafael Albuquerque (STOUT CLUB), the next book announced brings forth an additional co-writer making his debut in the world of comics. What better way to start “Scottober 2023” off with another fantastic series written by not one, but two Snyders!

The story begins in La Grange, Kentucky. It seems like a normal day at first. Kids playing in a backyard on a sunny day. Not a care in the world. How little did they know how fast things would change in a blink of an eye.

A mysterious black square appears in the yard. A cardinal flies by it and gets tangled up in its’ expanding tentacles. It is at this moment, readers begin to sense what terror is about to unfold.

Within a week, the black substance (now known as “The Shroud”) has spread rapidly, leaving much death and destruction in its’ wake. The future looks very bleak as it appears that little might be able to stop its’ spreading. Scientists discover that diamonds affect the substance but is it too little too late?

The story jumps 13 years ahead as readers get introduced to Canon and Jo. They are awaiting someone named Pindle to arrive. They scramble to make preparations with the farm animals they have to barter. Once the plan is in place, they peel the curtain back to the new world!

What visions do readers see? As the pages turn, the landscape is filled with characters all trying to find their place in this dangerous landscape. Allies, Enemies and Hope carry Canon and Jo on their business dealing. However one big move is made that changes everything. The fallout sets the stage for a greater mystery at hand and leaves readers with a lasting impression that will only grow as the story goes forward.

Talk about an impressive debut! There are many themes surrounding this story. From the opening, the tempo is set with a fast-paced opening act. The danger is presented loudly with featuring how fast the Shroud has spread. The time jump hits the ground running introducing the two main characters with a great jump-on point for readers. However, it is when the curtain is pulled back (literally) that the story shifts gears into an adventurous course.

The tone reflects an RPG-esque influence as Canon and Jo try to barter for supplies. Once that situation is “resolved”, the story takes a distinct turn in a dangerous course. The father and son duo place some clues for later in the journey to pay off concerning Jo and his connections to some of the supporting cast. The ending portion of the chapter throws in a few more surprises in the mix. There isn’t a point where anything felt overshadowed The story is very well written and detailed that readers will start generating theories right after the last page is read. It’s an entrapping story that you won’t want to put down.

Favoccia (along with Cogar and Napolitano) deliver an amazing post-apocalyptic world within these pages. There is an incredible two-page full shot of the “View from the Needles” that will make readers jaws’ drop. The action sequences pop off the page with the swift pacing of character movements. Favoccia gives the major antagonists dramatic entrances as well, giving readers a sense of the dangers looming ahead.

Introducing so many characters in one issue can be difficult, but Favoccia gives everyone their own unique looks and mannerisms. The interactions Jo leads with them prove to be a solid break from the action. The closing moments mix in flashbacks along with the mystery under Cogar’s coloring. The final panel mirrors what readers will be thinking as this adventure is only just beginning.

That said, it’s also a challenge to stand out amongst the related theme tales at the local comic shop. Considering the creative team behind this, standing out and grabbing fans’ attention won’t be a problem.

THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #1 by DAVID PEOPOSE (Savage Avengers, Spencer and Locke), Alex Cormack and Justin Birch present a multi-layered story that is a lock to win over fans no matter what their fandom is. Let’s take a closer look and see what is being unleashed to the masses here, shall we?

The year is 1740. Hugo Izan and a woman are talking as they watch over a cell. They are wondering how Father Mattias is doing as he is locked inside with something sinister. As the holy man tries to help the poor soul locked inside, he soon realizes that things are much more evil inside these walls than he could ever imagine.

With a terrifying voice and glowing red eyes, Hugo’s son Santiago, stares back at Father Mattias with evil intentions. With thunderous noise, the pair outside the door brace for the worse What they see even tops their wildest notions. Father Mattias has been brutally murdered. The man behind the killing is shackled to the wall, but this is no ordinary man. He is possessed by a devil named Legion.

In Rome, Father Franco Vieri is talking inside a confession booth. Readers witness Vieri’s portrayal of confronting a possessed soul. This ultimately leads him to accepting an offer to try succeeding where others have failed: save Santiago.

What will Vieri find when he arrives at the scene? Can he pull off what so many others have failed at. Readers brace for a journey as they watch as Vieri crosses paths with pure evil. Just when it seems to all fall into place, there are quite the surprises heading into the final pages. Once the last page is seen, there is no doubt that this will be a story that simply can not be passed up on.

Pepose stretches out the themes of the story to truly make this tale stand out. The beginning of the story gives enough clues to the readers to sense the danger looming. Once Veiri enters the mix, Pepose does an excellent job building him up to the audience. Vieri approaches the situation with new eyes but the writing reflects the mood of fear and anxiousness.

The pacing gives the overall conflict time to grow and is an easy follow for the readers. The final page will be what fans talk most about here and with Pepose at the helm, the surprises are just beginning.

Cormack brings a gritty and dark style to the story. The introduction to Legion was haunting and build a solid foundation. Excellent full page shot of Legion and Father Mattias depicting the evil at hand. Veiri’s beginning created a noteworthy impression right from the start.

This adds more emotions to what eventually transpires with Vieri once he initially encounters Legion. The closing half of the book delivers on a strong visual confrontation that fans won’t want to miss. Fantastic final full page to let any doubt disappear. The story is far from over.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5 OUT OF 10

With Pepose’s sharp writing blended with Cormack’s haunting art, the ideas one would have about not doing an “exorcist” story in this time period quickly disappear. Combining action, drama plus the overall feel of horror and fans simply won’t be ready for what this issue and series is going to be bringing on New Comic Book Day. You don’t want to miss this one.

TRANSFORMERS #1 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, the wait is finally over! Ever since the secret was let out in the pages of VOID RIVALS, fans have been eagerly waiting for the “ENERGON UNIVERSE” to kick into high gear! Bringing two of Pop Cultures biggest fandoms together in one universe is always an exciting time. Considering the pair making their re-introduction and it’s not just an event. It’s a new chapter in a historic legacy in comics.

Since its’ debut via Marvel in 1984, TRANSFORMERS has been a staple at the comics shops throughout various publishers. Often paired along with the world of G.I. Joe, their stories have been entertaining fans for decades. Now primed for a HUGE relaunch via Skybound Entertainment (and Image Comics), the quiet build has been trending towards a new series with one of comics’ biggest names behind it.

TRANSFORMERS #1 by DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON (MURDER FALCON, DO A POWERBOMB, BETA RAY BILL), MIKE SPICER AND RUS WOOTEN looks to keep the momentum going as a new chapter is about to be written in the franchise’s history. Let’s not wait any longer and dive in, shall we?

The story begins with imagery reflecting a struggle has happened for two major figures. One is “Sparky” Witwicky. The other is Optimus Prime (longtime leader of the Autobots). Both have seen better days during these panels.

The story shifts back to the present where Sparky’s son Spike find him at a bar. The mood is tense as Spike tries communicating with his dad, who’s not very receptive to the chatter. The name of “Jimmy” is mentioned which sways the dialogue into new areas. Sparky is rescued by a co-worker/designated driver, leaving the talk ended with much disdain.

Spike is picked up by his friend Cindy and her uniquely painted van. The pair heads to the mountains for star-gazing and a break from the Witwicky family drama. Little do the young couple know what is coming ahead.

With a loud rumble, the ground shifts. They fall down a ways. When they get their bearings back, Sokie and Cindyt realize they are not on a mountainside anymore. They are on the backend of a certain spaceship implanted into the actual mountain!

As they start looking around, readers see some familiar faces lying inside. The mood is tense and shocking. Before they can react, someone has crashed the party. They are the key connecting the Energon Universe!

What is their purpose? Did they come alone? It’s at this moment that the creative team turns EVERYTHING up to 11 as the action begins to furiously hit! There are many highs and lows within this sequence of pages. They will not disappoint! Just when readers think they’re a break to catch their breaths, the closing panels set up a terrifying! possibility for their future. There is WAY more that meets the eye with this explosive debut!

Johnson constructs an exciting and driven debut chapter for the next phase of Optimus Prime and company. The opening sequence may start off at a slower pace compared to the remainder of the issue. This allows the Witwicky family tension enough time to start connecting with readers. However, the moment that changes everything is the debut in this series of a certain character fans have seen before.

Once that character hits the page, the flood gates open with more of the fandom’s heavy hitters. Pacing really picks up, taking readers into peaks and valleys. The ending throws a solid curve into what has been nothing but fast moving blockbuster thrills!

With a big battle taking place, the art really pops off the pages. Anytime an Kazuchika Okada rainmaker is used in a comic battle, readers KNOW this is going to be something special! Excellent semi-full page panel featuring this. The dramatic panels reflects the deep emotions felt with the father/son dynamic.

It gives small breaks to the frenetic pace but nothing to overshadow it. Readers want big action and there is no disappointment to be found. It is a Hollywood summer blockbuster brought to life in a new media form. Nothing but win to set the bar for a universe that looks to make a huge impact right out of the gate.

The story begins in Bhutan years ago. Dinah Lance aka Black Canary,is having a private moment with her “sister” Sin over campfire. The chatter is calm as the pair is bonding, while facing the complicated situation that they are in. It closes peacefully with some fin moments before the reality sinks in.

That reality leads to Gotham City. Dinah has assembled a new Birds of Prey team comprised of Zealot, Big Bartha, Batgirl and Harley Quinn. Their mission is not an easy one. Sin is on the Island of Themyscira. Dinah tries explaining how this is just a simple recon mission but others have doubts. One of which is Zealot, who leaves the room after misreading the vibe in the room. Cooler heads prevail and the explanation of the plan is at hand. Sin is part of a deadly scheme of evil forces which if the new team fails, the body counts will rise for the Amazons.

With the current state of world affairs, going to Themyscira will not be easy. Leave it to the wild card of the team to have an idea how to sneak In and out of the island. Can this team do it? Readers come along for the ride as a few surprise guests jump on-board on the quest to save Sin. Leave it to the closing moments to ensure the latest Birds Of Prey team might have more on their hands that they bargained for.

Thompson gives readers a solid balance of drama and light-hearted moments with the team’s dangerous mission looming in the background. The personalities on this team may not scream teamwork just yet, but there have been flashes of why they have been put together. Thompson writes Zealot as the possible breakout star of this book. Zealot is stand-offish and very serious about her thoughts.

The conversations with both Dinah and Harley in this issue reflect that. There is much behind her actions that readers will have a vested interest with. Seeing Dinah bring in extra help steadily adds more layers to the story at hand. Once the team gets rolling, there are some great moments that readers will enjoy as they come along for the adventure.

Romero and Bellaire showcase the personal toll that this mission is taking on Dinah. The opening flashback sequence is easy-going and mirrors the bond between Dinah and Sin for all readers. Once the story swings back to the present, the panels feature the stress compounding about what is being asked of them. The reactions vary but none more so than Dinah.

These visuals are perfectly countered by Harley’s assessment of what needs to be done. This leads the team into the beginnings of their mission. There are some great action panels but none will jump out more than an excellent two page spread of the squad in action. The closing moments end this chapter on an excellent note with much to be excited to see moving forward.

With stakes being this high, readers know there is no easy route from Point A to Point B. Thompson, Romero and the team bring excellent writing and art to the newly formed team within this chapter. BATMAN #138 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we are keeping a watchful eye on the residents of Gotham City as war has erupted in DC COMICS! With the “parental figures” of the Bat-family on opposing sides, the lines are blurred between hero and villain. With its’ latest stop, has the Dark Knight gone too far to win at any costs?

BATMAN #138 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles holds nothing back as the Gotham War reaches a breaking point! Let’s take a closer look at what is unfolding now, shall we?

Since his awakening from the fallout of “Knight Terrors”, Batman hasn’t been welcomed to the new vision of Gotham he lives in now. Months after that event, Bruce Wayne wakes to find that a dangerous but effective approach to fighting Crime is working. However, the methods behind it do not match up to his personal code of ethics. Making matters even worse is the person behind it: Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.

Her “Robin Hood”-esque initiative of training thieves to steal from the rich instead of violent crime is working too well. Batman is strongly opposed to this but there’s more elements in play here. His back-up personality, Zur-En-Arrh, is now blinding his thoughts. This is causing major riffs with the Bat-family as they now are forced to choose sides in the battle of Gotham.

This issue picks up with Vandal Savage, the immortal nemesis of the DCU, speaking and narrating his beginnings of power. The story shifts to him meeting with the one and only Ra’s Al Ghul. From the tone of the meeting, it appears all roads lead to Gotham City.

Meanwhile, Red Hood (Jason Todd) is crippled in fear! The man behind it is …. BATMAN?! As it is revealed to the readers, Batman has a failsafe for dealing with Jason Todd’s “behavior issues”. With promise of a new beginning, Batman pleads with Jason to take him up on the offer of a new life.

Jason’s only hope appears to be Dick Grayson aka Nightwing. Grayson and Oracle have figured out this new attitude of Bruce is Zur-En-Arrh. Dick makes a play to halt the back up persona but is stopped by Brice’s only ally at this moment: Damian Wayne!

Readers witness as the mounting pressure finally breaks the bat-family. There is plenty of action as Dick Grayson is challenged by the one man who’s made him into the hero he is today. What is the outcome? The fallout from this latest chapter won’t fade away anytime soon.

The action is big, but the emotional points hit even harder. Things escalate as it is no mere coincidence a villain as dangerous as Savage is involved as the closing moments lead to believe. The only thing scarier is the mind-state of Bruce Wayne and who is the next to see him is definitely going to grab readers’ attention until the next chapter.

Zdarsky plays with the hearts of readers with quite a few deep emotional strikes on our favorite characters. Once readers see what Batman has done to Jason, Zdarsky plays into how ruthless this version of Batman truly is. Seeing Grayson confront his mentor is a true test of wills, tying things back to when he became Robin many years ago.

The other family members build into the drama with their own reactions to seeing this cold version of Bruce. The current round of action hits with a strong exclamation point before shifting gears to a long awaited meeting that is not going to end well. The closing moments bring even more danger with the quiet set-up. The parting moment leaves no doubt that this story has only just begun.

Jiménez and Morey dives right into the darker side of Batman’s persona early in this issue. The moments with Jason Todd screams terrifying imagery with Jason’s reactions to what has been done. The cold demeanor of Batman plays into this as well, noting the shift in mindset. Even when it feels as Bruce is trying to be sympathetic, it is brief and fleeting.

Nightwing’s facial expressions reflect the sadness of the task at hand, playing up to the readers who can sense the internal struggle the bat family is going through. This builds to a lasting image of the heartbreaking end of the latest round with a family member that’s a complete stranger. Factor in the parting visual and fans can’t help but count down the days until the next round.

THE FLASH #1 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we're speeding to the comic shops for a look at a brand new #1 from DC COMICS! Since the era of “Dawn of DC” has came about, the entire superhero line has been re-ignited give fans much to talk about. With successful new series for various members of the Justice League, it's now time for one of their featured stars to get their time to shine.

THE FLASH #1 by Simon Spurrier, Mike Deodato Jr, Trish Mulvihill and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou ushers in a new beginning for the Scarlet Speedster. Let's take a deeper dive and see what's happening here, shall we?

The story opens with Max Mercury, a longtime speedster within the DC Universe. Max is poised to start running in a deserted area. Max has a partner with a familiar face: Bart Allen aka Impulse! They set off to run and test the complexity of time and space that involves the Speed Force. In Max’s own words: “We don’t break the barrier… we EMBRACE IT! WE BREATHE THE LIGHTNING”.

However, those words come back to haunt as Max sees a Buffalo in a time portal. With its’ eyes glowing red, the Buffalo stares back, then a thunderous BOOM! Bart and Max are sent reeling back to the starting line. Breaking down what happened, Max theorizes the Speed Force might not be well. The image of the Buffalo is perceived to back that idea up.

Meanwhile, Wally West has assumed the mantle of The Fastest man Alive aka The Flash. Wally is fighting against the forces of a very well known foe of the Rogues Gallery: Gorilla Grodd. While dealing with his forces, Wally senses something's not right.

Before he can deal with that, Grodd’s forces make a play that puts the innocent in danger. However, it appears an Indigo streak appears to intervene and help. Wally is as puzzled much like Grodd’s army is. The streak gives Wally a second to help catch a falling victim but something happens which causes Wally to split form time only to come back and drop the catch.

Grodd finally makes his appearance but leaves after seeing enough. Grodd also parts with a condolence for Flash.

Readers can relate to Wally’s confusion as it appears something is very wrong with the Speed Force. Wally heads to try finding answers while dealing with life as a family man. What will he find in his search. The answers may not be all he wants as things escalate quickly. This all leads to a final page that is sure to grab fans attention as the next phase of the Flash begins now.

Spurrier puts together a very complex debut chapter. The issues of the Speed Force is the main driver for this plot, but it is a slow reveal to what is truly happening. Wally in the suit brings in the family aspect to the story with dealing with superhero “family” issues.

It does give a good break to the action but guessing there is more happening there than meets the eye. The pacing gives a great amount of time to build by the time the final image its, business is officially established for the latest Flash run.

Deodato and Mulvihill put together some very memorable visuals for this debut. The full page intro shot o Wally West kicks things into high gear. This is compliments well when Grodd finally makes his appearance. Both moments feel impactful as the major players entered the game.

The imagery also captures the emotions of family life in their varying degrees. Heading into the final act, the art team speeds the flow up slightly to build up the excitement for the closing moments. Readers are gifted an impressive full page parting shot to carry through to the next chapter.

THE PENGUIN #2 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are returning to Gotham City to follow-up on the latest from Oswald Cobblepot via DC Comics. Last we saw him, the former crime lord was enjoying life away in a new stat quo, but nothing lasts forever. The king of the Gotham Underworld has now returned home under the “advisement” of the U.S. Government. After last issue’s explosive introduction, the road to reclamation has become a must read!

THE PENGUIN 2 by Tom King, Rafael De Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo and Clayton Cowles welcomes readers into the next phase of his return. Let’s tag along and see how things unfold from here, shall we?

The issue opens up with a car pulling up to a mansion in Gotham. Coming out of the car is Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin. The narration reads as someone has found some sort of calm after years of service. That voice belong to The Help, who readers met during Batman: Killing Time.

The message is sent that The Penguin has arrived. The Help accommodates the meeting and hears the sales pitch. While over dinner. The Help explains he is dis-interested in what The Penguin is planning. Once he laughs at the notion, Oswalt’s demeanor changes ever so slightly. The offer is pressed more but The Help walks away. It is the battle of wills as one refuses to bend for the other.

Readers see that Oswalt leaves an ominous message to one of the butlers in the house that plays into the message he is giving all of Gotham: The King has returned!

What will the Penguin do from here? The story switches gears as the “honor amongst Thieves” motto is heavily strained between the two figures. An event starts a domino effect that can’t be stopped. Once the third act hits, there is little question of the resolution. The parting page puts a big exclamation point on a strong second issue.

King doesn’t delay in driving the point home that the Penguin is back. King sets up the meeting of “colleagues” with a tense overture. The dialogue reflects how far The Penguin’s legacy is being upheld. However, a key moment sends everything into another level.

Playing of Oswalt’s esteem issues, once The Help laughs at the offer, the mood changes and becomes a deadly game. The latter half is well crafted so once readers arrive at its’ peak moment, the payoff is huge. If here was any question of how dangerous the Penguin can be, this issue should put any other notions to rest.

De Latorre and Maiolo keep a brooding tone throughout the panels of the book. The initial meeting featured a wide variety of facial expressions ranging from The Help’s arrogance to Oswalt’s anger and cunning to the laughing moment.

Once the middle act begins, there is a strong full page visual to show one side of Oswalt, only to be debunked later with a gorgeous two-page full spread that screams “checkmate” to the game the leads are playing. The closing pages shadow that image bringing the book to a noteworthy conclusion.

King, De Latorre and the team don’t miss a beat with another fantastic issue of the return of Gotham’s Crime King. Superb writing orchestrates a plot that deceptively keeps readers guessing with exceptional art. The series has come out of the gate swinging and you don’t want to miss your chance picking it up.

SUPERMAN #6 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out one of the standout series of the “Superman” line over at DC Comics! Since it's kickoff in the “Dawn Of DC” era, the Man of Steel’s books have had a renewed focus, winning over fans with each issue. Case in point has been the latest “Superman” title by Joshua Williamson and Jamal Campbell.

After a brief hiatus with “Knight Terrors” and a strong Annual issue, the series returns to shops with Gleb Melnikov board for art along with Williamson, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher. Let's take a closer look at Superman #6, shall we?

Superman and Lex Luthor have always had a unique connection to say the least. In this current series, Lex is behind bars but has left Superman a massive gift in his absence. Superman is now in charge of the newly renamed “Supercorp”. With resources like that at his disposal, Supes should find crime-fighting easier. Sadly, that hasn’t been the case.

Surprise to no one, Lex has made some enemies. Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft are two that have made some noise as of late that can’t be ignored. While using a Kyrptonite Klaw, they have amplified some of Superman’s rogues to new heights. This has all be a plan to keep him at bay while Lex is attacked and nearly killed in prison!

This issue opens up with the frantic attempt to save Lex’s life. The imagery holds nothing back at how grim the situation has become. The story jumps two weeks later is to see Superman is back in action, yet not quite himself. Not being there for Lex is weighing heavy on his mind.

Meanwhile at the Daily Planet, it is business as usual with Lois Lane handling duties as serving Editor-In-Chief. Lois and Clark have a brief chat which leads to Clark heading to his “corporation” for help with solving the riddle of “Project: Chained”.

Readers find out there is a specialized prison underneath Stryker’s Island. Someone is there, but no one knows the reason why. What kind of power needs that kind of containment? As Superman looks to diver further into the mystery, the answers he finds will be shocking.

Can he even handle what has been discovered? If the last page is any indication, bracing for impact is required with a parting image that jumps off the page leading to the monster Superman #850!

Williamson does an amazing job at tying in classic superhero plots with modern times. The relationship between Clark and Lex has always been rocky at its’ best case. Seeing Clark’s conscious weigh heavy for failing brings the near-perfect hero down to a grounded level.

It is Clark’s unwavering sense of truth, justice and a better tomorrow that leads him to utilizing “Supercorp” when even he has reservations. The mystery plays out well with Williamson leaving many questions unanswered for now. The final pages really drive home the point of how high the stakes are heading into the anniversary issue.

Melnikov steps in for art duties and brings a unique vision of Superman’s world to readers. There is an excellent two page spread of Superman flying over cars in Metropolois that feels like a vintage superhero image (which is fantastic). The scenes with Lois and Clark reflect the frustration both are dealing with respectively.

The action panels flow very easy and readers will sense the threat level with a great two-page spread of Superman addressing what he finds in his search. The final images leave no doubt that the story is only beginning and question if Superman can really save the day next time readers see him.

The new arc of Joshua Williamson’s “Superman” doesn’t delay in bringing action and excitement to readers. Sharp writing and excellent visuals by Melnikov and Sánchez give readers a fun story to jump along for the ride heading to the monumental Superman #850!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #19 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the conclusion of a two part story from arguably the best superhero book currently in comics.

Since it's debut Batman/Superman: Worlds finest by DC COMICS has been a runaway hit. It's no wonder why considering the creative team of Mark Waid and Dan Mora. In the current story, Travis Moore is filling in for Mora, but the series hasn't skipped a beat.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #19 by Mark Waid, Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands concludes the legendary first meeting of 2/3 of DC’S heroic trinity. Let's take a closer look and see how that initial encounter plays out.

When a mysterious riddle is left at a crime scene in Gotham City, the first one to take notice would be the caped crusader himself, Batman. However, when a clue is written in is Kryptonian, that catches the eye of the Man of Steel.

As they meet in Gotham, there is still a sense of question each has about the other. Batman uses his Bruce Wayne Influence to meet with Clark Kent of the Daily Planet to ease some tension and answer more questions. Once the pair gets rolling they find out Jax-Ur, a long time foe of Superman has taken control of the Riddler! When confronting the villain, Batman gets pulled into the Phantom Zone, the long fabled limbo which is used as a prison!

This issue opens up with Superman fighting Jax-Ur over the skies of Gotham. Meanwhile, Batman is communicating telepathically with Alfred. In the conversation, readers are told of how the Zone walls had been weakening to breaches and absorbing Goth residents in the process. It is revealed Jax-Ur knew where a breach was presumed to occur and used the Riddler to lure Superman there and swap places. During the encounter, it was Batman who was pulled in instead.

With the battle taking place, Batman forces his thoughts thru the warped Phantom Zone to connect with Superman. It is in this moment that not only is a plan put in place, but common ground is met between the two that bonds them for years to come.

What does Batman think of now? Can the pair find a way to make this work and save the day? readers sit back and enjoy watching the fight get taken to Jax-Ur. The resolution plays perfectly into what makes these two legends. The parting image is a bit of a surprise as an epilogue showcases this story is not as over as readers might think.

Waid sets up the story in such a manner that readers can’t help but smile reading it. Even behind the Phantom Zone walls, Batman finds a way to decipher the problem and pairs it up with Superman’s strengths of unending hope to make it work. The pair’s ethics have always been different but when together, it pops off the page.

The final act doesn’t falter giving readers the iconic moments that they have become accustomed to when seeing the pair work together. The final panel for their story portion perfectly closes the beginnings of a lasting friendship.

Moore delivers on big action for the majority of this story. The fight between Superman and Jax-Ur over the Gotham Skyline is an easy win for readers. Even when Batman and Superman take the fight to very familiar spot, Moore never takes the foot off the gas for the battle.

There’s a great full page shot showing the devastation around them. Later in the book, there’s a few panels that cement the pair’s future with a legendary feel. The closing panel captures the moment and leaves fans grinning from ear-to-ear seeing the birth of the World’s Finest.

The first meeting between two of DC Comics and pop culture’s most beloved heroes concludes with an unforgettable issue. Waid’s excellent writing is brought to life with Moore and Bonvillian’s art to present the catching throwback tale for the modern audience. This is Superhero comics at its’ finest….world’s finest.

The story begins in Bludhaven two years prior. A man is being followed walking down the street. When his trailer catches up with him, the assumption is the man in question is Dick Grayson. However in this case, he is not. This is RIC Grayson. In case anyone isn’t familiar, Ric is the amnesic persona that emerged when Dick was shot in the head by the KGBeast during Tom King’s run on Batman.

Ric is being followed by a man who claims he was in the circus with Grayson when he was a kid. He hands Ric an envelope. At the Prodigal Bar, Ric starts up conversation with Bea, the bartender/owner about places to hide the envelope. The story jumps two days later where a man known as the Quartermaster offers a place to stash the mysterious object: the Hold. Ric writes a name down on the ledger for someone to claim it: Nightwing.

Now jumping to present time, Dick Grayson focuses his attention back on a clue told to him by a sailor a wile back. Why is his name written on a box in the Hold? As Dick begins his investigation, a few familiar “friends” have already made their way to the Hold. The pair of Heartless and Tony Zucco have forced their way inside the cave. However when they arrive, what they see isn’t expected.

What is found when they go inside? Nightwing arrives on the scene but what happens next, readers won’t see coming. Behind the action comes a swift ending that is sure to please fans as a welcoming return to Mr. Grayson’s world hits the marks.

There’s also a small back-up story called “Breakfast For Dinner” which teams up Nightwing, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown up facing a looming foe.

Taylor jumps right back in with a solid introduction chapter. The character of Ric Grayson is extremely polarizing amongst DC Comics fans. However, Taylor’s usage of the character for this story works very well. Seeing Dick retrace a past he doesn’t remember is a great twist to open this chapter with. The character of Heartless provides a great foil to Dick. Some feel the cat/mouse game they’re playing has gone on too long but I disagree. Keeping Dick on the chase builds up the credibility of this deadly villain.

Heading into the latter half of the issue, Taylor gives fans a well-timed action sequence to break the dialogue up. It is vintage Grayson which fans will be excited to see. The final leads to a strong cliffhanger ending which plays into why this book gets so much praise. Just when you think you know the answers, the questions get reshuffled. That’s always a win for readers.

Byrne steps in for Bruno Redondo for this issue and readers will see the standout introduction of Heartless to this story. The panels move briskly as the villain wastes no time making an immediate impact. This all builds toward a hall-full page panel showing where he and Zucco got with their plans. Meanwhile, Byrne gives readers a steady dose of action sequences featuring Nightwing, building off a solid full page motorcycle panel. The final moments swing things back to the story with mounting tension. The parting image closes with a noteworthy full page panel to say goodbye for now, but not for long.

The next chapter in one of Comics’ best series starts off with an excellent starting point. Taylor, Byrne and the team mix in superb writing and fine artwork to give readers a welcome to what is sure to be another hit arc on this fantastic series. Don’t miss this on New Comic Book Day!

WONDER WOMAN #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the return of one of DC Comics’ Trinity Characters. In their illustrious history, there has been many heroes of legend but three have stood above the rest: Superman, Batman and Princess Diana of Themyscira otherwise known as Wonder Woman!

Since debuting in ALL-STAR COMICS #8 in 1941, the adventures of Diana Prince have become that of legend amongst comic readers. Now poised to start a new chapter under the “Dawn Of DC” banner, there is a ton of buzz surrounding her latest saga due to the talented creative team behind it.

The issue begins in West Billings, Montana with a simple game of Pool at a bar. The narration leads readers to think that an event has already happened. In the moment, there is some unwelcomed banter amongst patrons. The end result is an Amazonian is smashing a disrespectful male head-first thru the table.

As more male patrons of the bar interject themselves into the conflict, the end result leaves them no reward. When the smoke has cleared, nineteen males are dead inside the bar.

The news media is reflecting the public’s shock about this attack. Some are putting a spin on the events. Suddenly, a man’s phone gets a message that interrupts his meeting with two other individuals. When leaving the meeting, the mysterious figure kills the two businessmen after revealing he was working undercover to expose them. With the bodies laying dead and a room full of scared patrons, the man simply walks up to the counter and leaves his business card to give to the authorities. His name is Sgt. Steel

Steel is now put in charge of a unit known as the Amazon Extradition Entity (A.X.E.). AXE is the result of the Congress-passed Amazon Safety Act, which bans Amazons from being inside U.S. Borders.

Readers will need to brace for the viciousness of Steele and his unit. What transpires next will send shockwaves through the DCU. These actions don’t go unanswered as there is someone who has a very vested interest in discovering the truth and the U.S. might not be ready for what Hell she will bring when she strikes. If that is not enough, just wait for the final moments to add more fuel on an already enraged fire!

King constructs such a multi-layered conflict in this opening issue. The idea of the Amazons being banned from the United States is a fantastic twist. With Diana being such a popular and respected public figure, the new stat quo brings forth how will the people now look at Diana after Congress makes their move. King gives some insight to this, but readers can expect the payoff to be later in this series. The question ultimately becomes where will they ultimately side: Diana or the Government?

Steel proves to be a solid foil to what Diana is up against. His blind loyalty is a reflection of the government’s opinions as they push an agenda forward. This is brought to terrifying light on their initial move. The pace nicely builds the tension before the eventual meeting of opposing forces. The action hits when it graces the story but its’ fallout plays a bigger factor. the closing moments throw everything on its’ head as another piece is added to an already impressive puzzle.

Sampere brings this story to life with easy and anxiousness as things swiftly change. The initial outing in the bar paints a vivid picture of the melee that transpired. Excellent full-page panel to light the fuse for this portion. Also noteworthy is the use of the 9-panel page for when the reporters come into the story. Sampere also adds much emotion to the supporting cast of Steel’s attack.

The mannerisms range from scared, frightened to Steel’s maniacal enjoyment of what is happening. The mood changes later as Steel sees exactly who he’s up against as a ill page stand-out visual welcomes that character to the party. The closing moments throw a swerve into where things are heading with a parting image to close out a strong debut chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

Mixing in the superhero world with political conspiracies brings forth a grave challenge to Princess Diana of Themyscira. Through King’s superb writing, the visuals from Sampere and Morey paint a fractured and dangerous new world with one character fighting for justice against insurmountable odds. The hype is completely justified on what is happening within these pages. Don’t miss out on NCBD!
