Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re checking out the latest series coming out of comic’s most popular universes: The MASSIVE-VERSE! The Radiant Black-led line from Image Comics has had a HUGE 2022 with new editions like Rogue Sun and The Dead Lucky just to name a few. RADIANT PINK #1 by MEGHAN CAMARENA, MELISSA FLORES, EMMA KUBERT, REBECCA NALTY, & BECCA CAREY (Editor: Michael Busuttil) now joins the line kicking off a limited series of the popular Massive-verse character. Let’s not waste another moment and see what is going on with this story, shall we?

RADIANT PINK #1 - On Sale December 7th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue kicks off with a stranger appearing on the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. They are communicating with someone before readers attention shifts to a live stream from “Evaplayss”, where Radiant Pink is guesting on. Unknown to the viewers watching the stream is Eva IS Radiant Pink, the radiant with teleportation powers. Helping pass this illusion on is Eva’s best friend Maddie who is engineering the stream behind the scenes. During the stream, Radiant Pink announces that she will be making an appearance to raise money for children’s cancer research at the Kathryn Mitchell Children’s Hospital. After ducking out of the stream as Radiant Pink, Eva goes back to game streaming for many hours.

This causes concern from Maddie who thinks Eva is burning herself out with the superhero lifestyle she’s living in secret. Eva brushes it off to go on “Pink Patrol.” Readers get an insight to what Pink’s routine is being a hero and what toll it takes on her. It’s matched by a conversation with Maddie and her grandmother about Eva’s state. There is no break in the story as readers are taken to the guest appearance at the hospital, which leads to great success for Radiant Pink. However, the event is crashed by an interested party looking to acquire the Radiant power she possesses. What happens next will challenge the young hero as events unfold faster than she realizes. What happens from the fallout from here? Will the pace Eva’ been pushing finally catch up with her? And what about the final sequence of events to close out on? Readers will have much to be talking about following the conclusion of this issue.

Solid debut issue & very welcoming to new readers of the character. The writing team of Camarena and Flores introduces Eva’s world and how perception isn’t exactly reality. Eva tries portraying everything is fine but it’s a great cover to the loneliness she is experiencing being a popular hero. The conversation between Maddie and her grandmother about Eva was a standout moment. Seeing how others are noting Eva’s break-neck speed of life, it gives some clarity on the drama about to unfold. The charity event provided a great glimpse of the hero in action. The writers also left a strong cliffhanger image for fans to process heading to the next issue.

Kubert brings a lot of energetic panels to life with this book. From the fun moments dealing with the initial stream to the candid talk between Maddie and Eva, there is some fun and light-hearten scenes to counter the action from the charity event. Kubert showcases Eva’s emotional side in some great panels as well. Two that jump right out is Eva getting told how much the event raised and to the two page end of her heroic day. Pacing never felt too fast as the story progressed easily into the big action moments in the issue. The final page sets up things nicely for next issue with small hints of what’s to unfold now.

FINAL POINT: The latest series spiraling out of the Massive-verse debuts with an issue readers don’t want to miss. The creative team makes Eva’s world very accessible to the latest adventure which shows a lot of intrigue moving forward. Camarena, Flores, Kubert and the team set things up with excellent writing and art to bring the spotlight to the massive-verse’s next big hit. Don’t miss it at the local comic shop this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book book to the ODPH Podcast. For this entry, we’re checking out the conclusion of one of the best mini-series of 2022. DO A POWERBOMB #7 by Dainel Warren Johnson (Murder Falcon, Beta Ray Bill), Mike Spicer and Rus Wooton for Image Comics hits the final bell on a story that has combined the worlds of comics and pro wrestling. Each issue has felt like an event. The series has been an emotional roller coaster while building towards the main event. Let’s not waste any more time and RING THE BELL to kick this blog off, shall we?

DO A POWERBOMB #7 - On Sale Decemeber 7th

In case you’re new to this comic, the story centers around Lona Steelrose. Lona is the daughter of Yua Steelrose. On a fateful match vs. Cobrasun, Yua is fatally injured when Cobrasun is performing a move and slips. 10 Years later, Lona wants to become a pro wrestler, determined to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her family doesn’t want her to do it, but when approached by Willard Necroton, a necromancer with a proposal Lon can’t say no to: enter and win my tournament and her mother will be brought back to life!

This becomes a no-brainer for Lona as she enters the “Deathlyfe Tag Team tourney”. There’s one hangup: Lona needs a partner. The solution becomes reconnecting with the man who wrestled Lona in her final match…. COBRA SUN!!!! Since we last saw Cobrasun, the masked wrester has now dabbled into the pro wrestling deathmatch scene. When Necroton presents the tourney idea to Cobrasun, he’s reluctant to take on Lona as a partner, but does. Readers are hit with a HUGE reveal when Cobrasun is revealed to be Lona’s father and Yua’s husband!

From this point, the pair enters the supernatural tournament. Readers are taken thru one hell of a range of emotions as the pair fights their way to get to the main event! Much in the vein of great pro wrestling (LONG LIVE GCW), there are swerves thrown in the story but there’s nothing short of the incredible action going on between the ropes. Through some luck and timing, the pair winds up winning the tag team titles after initially losing the tourney. Unfortunately, Necroton’s promise turns out to be false as he can’t bring Yua back. He does enter one final option that can though. The pair must now face GOD in a 2 on 1 handicapped match! Get ready for the ultimate main event!

This issue kicks off at Heaven’s Gate Pro Wrestling with a packed arena waiting for this main event! From the opening bell, Lona and Cobrasun are giving their all against the “architect of creation”. Readers are in for an intense battle as the pair is literally pulling out all the stops to win this bout. The action is non-stop and pulls from many styles of pro-wrestling. Can the pull off the impossible? How will they hold up against GOD? Readers won’t be expecting the outcome but trust me when I say, they will be more than satisfied with the ending. The issue will leave readers will a final image that will carry them forward post match.

Incredible issue and series from start to finish. One thing Daniel Warren Johnson has become well known for is the big action and big emotions from his books. Do a Powerbomb lived up to that label and then some. As an avid pro-wrestling fan (Check out the ODPH or 607 TWS podcasts for proof), Johnson’s attention to the wrestling styles made for some fantastic visuals. Mixing in Lucha Libre, Strong Style, and Deathmatch to name a few, Johnson demonstrates how wrestling can literally tell a story. Seeing great tag teams like ORANGABANG & The Knights of Rhyne made for some memorable matches. This issue captures the “big figt feel” as the tag team faces off in a match they shoudn’t be in but readers are fully invested on every near fall till it’s conclusion. Johnson books a match that lives well up to the hype.

However, the theme that will hook readers (regardless of their wrestling fandom) is Lona’s determination to get her mother back. Johnson crafts Lona’s quest with sheer determination and will. Readers can’t help but pull for her and Cobrasun to win. Johnson also keeps the surprises coming and this issue was no exception. Each issue shows how much Lona puts on her shoulders as she strives to win the tourney. The match’s conclusion will throw some readers off but it nails the landing for the series. The final moments deliver on tying up the journey at hand and the final image is guaranteed to hit all the emotional buttons on every reader who sees it. Johnson doesn’t let the action sway away from this. The whole series has been about various stages of feeling and never misses that mark to close on.

FINAL POINT: Do A Powerbomb #7 caps off a series that defines how emotional the world of pro wrestling can be. Johnson, Spicer & Wooton present readers with a story of perseverance while pressing forward in dealing with loss. This only comes together with the spectacular storytelling and thrilling art that comes with any project with Daniel Warren Johnson’s name attached to it. Highest possible recommendation this week. Make sure you get to the Local Comic Shop and pick this issue up

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast. For this entry, Boom Studios has been on a huge roll to close out 2022 on with great new comics series such as Behold, Behemoth (#2 also out this week), Specs and Once Upon a Time at The End of The World and all signs point to another hit addition to their line-up. KNOW YOUR STATION #1 by Sarah Gailey, Liana Kangas, Rebecca Nalty and Cardinal Rae brings an exciting tale of sci-fi murder and mystery to the local comic shop that you don’t want to miss. The book has already sold out at the distribution level and 2nd printing is on the way. That said, let’s take a deeper dive into what is unfolding in this issue, shall we?

KNOW YOUR STATION #1 - on sale December 7th

The story centers around a haven in space for the “elite upper class” to flourish away with innovation from the rest of society fades away with a failing Earth. Readers are introduced to some of the team behind making this space haven run and be a utopia. The story then shifts to a character named Elise, who is the ships’ security liaison. Elise looks worse for wear from a rough night before. After being assisted by an AI named St Brigid to get ready, Elise is summoned to meet with the Raulssons to help solve an alleged robbery. using the AI at hand, Elise cracks the case and finds the missing property.

From here, Elise meets with Detective Sergeant Leona Pritchard who has been brought to the station to investigate a grizzly murder. The feeling being portrayed is that Elise is not qualified to solve this case and needed help. The victim is CFO Alberto Fairmilk, which there appears to be a cover-up going on not to alarm the other residents on the ship. Elise and Leona search the crime scene and readers witness how violent this murder was. Elise breaks away to recompose her thoughts. What happens next will catch readers off guard! Another murder has happened! Who is the victim? How did it happen? With a rising body count, how does Elise progress from here? There is much to break down from the final act that readers will be locked in for waiting for the next chapter.

Gailey sets up a strong debut issue keeping readers on edge from start to finish. Elise comes across as a character in over her head but making the most of the situation she’s in. The banter between her and Leona worked to show that even with the inexperience, Elise is showing she can figure this case out as well. St Brigid’s commentary played off well as a small dose of comedic relief but giving more mystery to what’s starting to unfold. The mystique of the ship is one readers is one with so many possibilities that readers can’t escape from. Pacing kept everything moving so when the big closing act hit, readers were hit with the shocking moments perfectly. Excellent introduction issue.

Kangas delivers on presenting a futuristic mystery with many layers involved with it. Seeing how Elise is coping with working on the ship gave a bigger understanding to her character. This played well into the final series of events of the issue. Kangag didn’t hold back on the gruesomeness of the crimes unfolding. Those visuals established how dangerous those threats are and how this is taking a toll on Elise. The rest of the characters introduced have their moments to stand out and gives readers a solid foundation to where this story is going from here. The final moments of the book put a huge exclamation point on the issue with a full page vision to drive home the danger which lies upon the ship.

FINAL POINT: Know Your Station #1 sets up the board for a murder mystery that fans will be anchored in for the long haul. Gailey, Kangas, and the team present the enigmatic futuristic landscape with incredible writing and art to complement it. You don’t want to miss this book at the local comic shop this week!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. For this entry, it’s back to the old west with one of the best books on the Comixology Originals line via Best Jackett Press! CANARY #4 by Scott Snyder, Dan Panosian, Richard Starkings and Will Dennis has been a fantastic horror western tale that has been leaving readers in awe with some jaw dropping moments and frightening themes. After last issue’s final image, let’s not delay any longer and see where the story goes from here, shall we?

CANARY #4 - On Sale December 6th

In case you’re just joining in, this story centers around a brutal murder in Utah in 1891. Marshall Holt, a legendary lawman, is assigned to the case before he retires. When investigating, Holt is led back to the town of one of his most terrifying case: Canary. It is in Canary that Holt crossed paths with Hyrum Tell, a psychopath who’s heinous activities have scared the bravest of lawmen. The images of the children Tell killed in the flashback last issue give a true indication of what evil Holt was fighting against.

Upon his return, Holt meets up with Edison Edwards (or Ed-Ed), & Mabel Warren, daughter of Canary founder Chester Warren, as they investigate a cave that may hold the key to solving the case. The cave has its own dark history as well being the spot where Chester and some miners were killed. With the use of Edward’s Sonotron, the trio investigate the water levels of the cave. Their findings come as a shock to all as voices are heard saying “WE’RE STILL DOWN HERE!!!”

This issue opens up with Canary Mayor Gem using the Sonotron to investigate about the voices heard in the cave. Meanwhile, Holt, Edwards and Warren make their way to an abandoned house that Chester used as a headquarters for a group known as “The Global Geological & Divination Society 1081” or House 1081. Inside the house, there may be more clues to solving the reason behind the grizzly murders of the first issue. As the three move throughout the house, they dive deeper into the story behind the “Canary Evolution” theory and brace for some massive reveals.

All that said, one of the biggest shock surprises is what Mayor Gem pulls up from the cave with the Sonotron’s rope … or should I say who? The fallout from this moment is big. Even with this reveal, readers are 1000% NOT READY for the final page of what closes this issue. What do the trio find at House 1081 and what makes Canary so special? What came out from the mine thanks to Mayor Gem and WHAT ABOUT THAT LAST PAGE! Get ready for another can’t miss issue in this series!

Leave it to Snyder to keep dropping surprise after surprise after surprise this issue. Readers will have much to process with the two main stories happening here. The mystery behind House 1081 made for excellent drama as Holt starts pulling back the curtain on the secret of the murders. There’s a quiet moment in the book that connects everything with Holt’s past and present. Snyder spins that into the story perfectly so when the emotional impact hits, readers will feel its’ weight.

The other main story is Mayor Gem’s discovery. Snyder progresses that storyline much like the “canary Evolution” formula. There are any twists and turns with this plot that readers witness the growth into the final form (last page) and can’t help but be blown away. Excellent work pacing these big moments out where none overall the other.

Panosian bestows some amazing visuals throughout this issue. The atmosphere created by the art adds layers of tension and uncertainty as Holt ad company try finding answers. It plays off the writing flawlessly. Mayor Gem’s find at the mine is a full page shocking moment that will connect with every reader. It’s balanced out but the attention to details within House 1081. Later in the book, there’s a scene where Holt is looking at some framed pictures. Panosain makes those panels stand out with great detail and how it connects to a major reveal hits all the marks. With all these fantastic visuals to witness, Panosain drops a lasting image to close this chapter out that fans will be buzzing about.

FINAL POINT: The “Last Ride” Of Marshall Holt takes some thrilling turns before leaving readers with a haunting final image in the latest chapter of Canary. Snyder, Panosian and the team bring the tension and speechless reveals with excellent storytelling and art. It continues to be a must read at Comixology each month. Don’t miss this on new comic book day!

DOOM PATROL Season Four part 1 review (HBO MAX)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay points, the comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast. For this entry, we are checking out the return of one of the best television/streaming shows, let alone best comic book shows to hit the airwaves. Making its’ season four debut on HBO Max on December 8th, DOOM PATROL is back with an all new season! From their comic debut in DC Comics in 1963 to being one of the initial starter shows for the DC Universe service in February 2019 (along with “Titans” which just returned to HBO Max a few wees back), the quirky superhero team has won over fans with their unique adventures.

Season Four kicks off a very busy season for the heroes as they are slated to have a brand new series, “The Unstoppable Doom Patrol” by Dennis Culver and Chris Burnham, featured as a part of DC Comics’ new “Dawn Of DC” initiative slated in March 2023. I can’t stress enough: if you like what you’ve seen thus far on the show, make sure to sign up for DC Comics Infinite and check out some of their great comic stories. You will see the influence of the Grant Morrison run throughout the tv series.

Speaking of the series, DOOM PATROL will debut its’ first two episodes on December 8th with single episodes running thru January 5th before taking break and resuming later in 2023. The ODPH podcast was granted early screening privileges to the series premiere so here is out SPOILER FREE review!

Doom Patrol Season Four - Airing on HBO Max starting December 8th

In case you are not familiar with the Doom Patrol, they are a group of super powered individuals who are flawed but still push forward somehow saving the world in the process. The team is comprised of:

Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby) who can stretch her skin but struggles to maintain it,

Negative Man (Matt Bomer), who radiates a dark energy being inside of him

Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), who’s multiple personalities each have their own powers

Robotman (Brendan Fraser), who’s human brain was installed into a robotic body

All of which were at one point being helped by Dr. Niles Caulder (Timothy Dalton) until a massive reveal in season 1 fractures everything. Cyborg (Joivan Wade), the longtime member of the Teen Titans and most recently the Justice League, was added to this line-up for the series since the beginning. Cyborg is half man, half robot following an accident at his father’s lab. Joining the team this season is Madame Rouge (Michelle Gomez), a “frenemy” last season who can change her shape.

Throughout the previous seasons, the team has dealt with their haunting pasts, personal discoveries and encountered a wide variety of characters such as Danny the Street, Mr. Nobody, Kipling, Gargaux The Decimator and the Sisterhood of Dada to name a few. To say there is no show like this on TV/Streaming is an understatement. The adventures have lived up to their comic book legacy leaning heavily into their time on the “DC Vertigo” Mature Readers and “Young Animal” imprint style of story. It stands out on its own due to its incredible ensemble cast.

How Diane Guerrero hasn’t won an Emmy for this role is a complete travesty in my humble opinion. The same can be said for Frasier, Bowlby and Bomer who each have had standout arcs within the first three seasons. This show transcends the typical super hero formula as its strongest themes are how these individuals deal with their own personal issues and push forward to do the right thing, even if they have no shot of winning. Heading to season four, the bar has been set very high for this show. Does it hit the mark?

The answer is a resounding YES! Season Four kicks off with the group “working” as a team under the leadership guise of Elasti-Woman. The first mission viewers see goes off as one would expect with this team and is a perfect way to kick the season. From here, the team’s plan of a simple trip post mission goes drastically wrong. With a detour into the future, the Doom Patrol gets exposed to what might be the end of the world and at what cost it might take to stop it.

From the initial start, viewers can bank on another strong season from Diane Guerrero, who handles such a complex character with seemingly ease switching personas as per the story direction. Jane’s story continues to be one of the noteworthy plots of this show. Guerrero persists making Jane a must watch factor of this show. However, the one character to keep an eye on this season will be Jiovan Wade’s Cyborg. From the offset, he looks to have a big story line on the horizon. This will be a great upgrade for Cyborg, as he’s been the “outsider” of the group for quite some time. Personally, I think the banter back and forth between Bowlby and Gomez, who is such a great addition to the show, will make for quite a few memorable scenes.

This season doesn’t stray away from the winning formula that has made the show such a hit from the beginning. The writers continue to embrace the challenge of each individual’s struggles while braving the offbeat surroundings they find themselves in. Viewers can easily connect and root for this group of misfit toys because each actor isn’t holding back from adding to the emotional depth of their characters. For as much as this show doesn’t fit into a certain mold, it makes its own that more shows should follow.

FINAL POINT: Let’s get weird for all the right reasons! Season Four of Doom Patrol comes out the gates swinging with a perfect blend of delight and dysfunction. The story looks as it will challenge the team more than they ever have been before. Viewers can tag along and witness strong performances from Guerrero, Fraser, Bomer and the team as they navigate to find a way to help save the world and each other in the process.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. For this entry, we’re tagging along with Ellie Hawthorne on the next chapter in the brand new smash series from Boom Studios! Issue #1 just went to second printing selling out almost instantly and with good reason. DAMN THEM ALL #2 by Simon Spurrier, Charlie Adlard, Sofie Dodgson, Shayne Hannah Cui, and Jim Campbell picks up right where readers last saw Ellie in her new role and trying to solve the supernatural mystery from last issue. Before we get into a deeper dive about this issue, how AMAZING is this alternate cover created by Tula Lotay (Barnstormers)?! That said, let’s check out what’s happening in issue two, shall we?

In case you’re jumping in now, Ellie Hawthorne’s life has become way more complicated following the death of her uncle Alfie. With his death, the 72 devils of the Ars Goetia have now been freed from their damnation. It’s up to Ellie to send them back to where they came from by any means necessary. The first issue was an in your face welcome to Ellie’s world with magic in the air and questions galore to solve.

This issue opens up with a flashback to Dora, the New Orleans officer who is working with Ellie on figuring out what happened to Alfie. During her time on the force, she’s shown handling a school shooter and her direct way of defusing the situation. Dora’s tactics lead the shooter to kill himself and Dora is removed from the force. From this, Dora meets a stranger in a bar whom she connects with: Alfie Hawthorne. From here, Dora and Ellie start breaking down the recent events and covering the tracks of the massacre they survived in the first issue.

The story now shifts to Dora confronting mobster Frankie Wax, whom Ellie is now working with to stop the devils. After a brief meeting, Ellie and Dora meet up again to start putting pieces together bout what is going on. Unfortunately there’s no rest for the wicked as the magical element shifts again, prompting Ellie to get some help in dealing with this latest move. Who is now drawn into the field? What possible impact can they make? Does Ellie get more information about Alfie? There might not be time to process all the moving parts as the final panel will have readers guessing what is going to happen now!

Spurrier delivers on another strong issue of writing. Dora’s introduction was well-crafted to explain her character and seeing the dynamic play out with Ellie moving forward should be a treat for readers. The journal pages left by Alfie explaining the new characters in the issue is a great add. With so many new players being introduced, the quick one page read helps tremendously in getting an idea of what they’re about. Ellie continues to be an interesting character to watch as she’s written with varying flaws but still trying to make sense of whats happening here.

Adlard balances out the supernatural with the real world with impeccable skill. Dealing with the magical entities popping up throughout the story, Adlard keeps things grounded to where they don’t stand out for wrong reasons. They all fit right in for creating a unique vision of Ellie’s world. Seeing the emotional tale of Dora’s background play out was another intense chapter in this story. There truly is something special happening within this story.

Final Point: Excellent continuation from the explosive first issue. Spurrier, Adlard and the creative team start breaking down the world of Ellie Hawthorne with strong character moments mixed in with supernatural elements. The story is just getting started but DAMN THEM ALL has been checking all the boxes for what makes a must read comic. Don’t miss this issue on New Comic Book Day at the LCS.

In case you’re checking out Rogue Sun for the first time, when his father is killed, DYLAN SIEGEL becomes the heir to the mantle of Rogue Sun, who is the last line of defense against the supernatural facing the world. Dylan gets a rude awakening into his father’s world with surprises and enemies challenging him at every turn. After surviving his battle with Cataclysm, Dylan was thrusted into a confrontation with Ornate, who pushed the hero to his limits. Now recovering from that fight, Dylan tries returning to a normal life.

This issue kicks off with a man returning home to find a mysterious stranger waiting in the wings for him. The man, referred to as Suave, recruits the gentleman to help him with a mission. After initially being turned down, Suave applies some pressure and reveals a hand marking on the man which aligns with the markings on Suave’s face.

Meanwhile, Dylan returns home to his step-family’s estate which plans are in motion for him to change. One said plan is for Dylan to return to school after taking time off. All the while, Suave and his group are on a roof top trying to access a forbidden door. Who are they trying to contact? When Rogue Sun shows up, what happens next changes the course of someone forever. Is it Rogue Sun? A member of his family? Readers will be locked in to find out and see who was bent and broken and who has hell to pay for the actions seen in this issue?

Parrott comes back from the CYOA break-away to usher Dylan into his new arc with a solid foundation. The introduction into who appears to be the next foil to Dylan was set up wonderfully. Very few writers can capture the youthful brash voice of a character quite like Parrott. MMPR readers know how great he is at this, but now with a creator-owned character, Parrott is really letting loose and it shines thru. Dylan isn’t necessarily your typical hero. Dylan is tough to be around, much due to the anger he’s felt at home. Channeling that into a hero has been difficult but Dylan is learning on the fly. It appears he’s going to learn about great power and responsibility the hard way. The final act is going to leave readers amped up to see what’s next.

Abel returns after a hiatus from last issue with another great issue. seeing the dynamic play out with Dylan and his “family” makes for some entertaining panels. Other great moments involve the reaction of many when Dylan returns to school. There are plenty of notable responses to such a polarizing person. It gives solid balance to the Suave story and how dark that gets in a hurry. The action moves very fast and picks up steam as it heads towards the final act. Fantastic final page to conclude the latest chapter on.

FINAL POINT: The next arc for Dylan Siegal starts off with an excellent issue to read. Parrott, Abel and company keep the young hero balancing his normal and hero life with sensational storytelling and art. The groundwork for something big is being set with this issue so don’t miss this book at the LCS this week.

In case you’re just jumping into the story now, Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi returned to her home of San Francisco after being honorably discharged from the armed forces. Much has changed since her time away. Morrow, a company with an agenda all its’ own, has been digging their clutches int San Francisco while opposing them has been the Salvation Army, who has their own ideas about what San Francisco should be. The only person standing in their way is Bibi, who’s emerged as a hero the city needs while dealing with her own mental health post service (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt).

This issue jumps in with the fallout of Morrow making a play to draw Bibi out which resulted in her parents restaurant being destroyed and her father injured. Bibi makes the save with some help and rescues her dad before flying off. Meanwhile, Mr. Jimmi Moss, the head of Morrow, is relaxing while the chaos is ensuing. His plan to take down Bibi has started to work.

From here, readers catch up with former Officer Maria Garcia who has become an ally to Bibi, and Valentine, who’s Morrow through and through. The conversation is poignant as the question of Morrow’s ethics come into play. However, readers won’t be ready for what comes next as there’s a dive into Bibi’s past that will change her future forever. How will Bibi handle what’s coming next? Will Morrow pull off their next phase? and HOLY CRAP, WHAT JUST HAPPENED ON THE LAST PAGE?!?! Get ready for an issue that is sure to have fans talking!

The saga of Bibi’s heroic evolution continues to be absolutely incredible. Flores presents Bibi as a character who doesn’t do everything right but does everything needed to win. One of the strongest moments in this issue is right after Bibi makes the save of her father and starts reflecting after. Giving readers an inside peak into what Bibi is thinking made for some powerful imagery. The pace doesn’t slow down after that as Bibi heads straight into Morrow’s way. Readers can’t help but root for her to win and that’s all based on how the writing has established the emerging hero.

Carlomagno and Iacono give the world of Bibi’s San Francisco a bold energy in this issue. Bibi’s emergence from the restaurant pops right off the page and gives that panel an iconic feel. Without spoiling, the place where Bibi goes after is presented exceptionally. The action is high impact when it happens while the emotional moments stand apart on their own. The final shot form this book is one that adds more excitement to the moment which already had a huge aura to it. Excellent work from all involved.

FINAL POINT: The Dead Lucky shows no sign of slowing down from its meteoric pace. With a lead character that is complex while balancing bravery, Bibiana Lopez-Yang has become a character you can’t pass reading about. Flores, Carlomagno and the creative team craft another hit with the emotion and action readers crave from a super hero tale. Don’t leave the comic shop without this issue in your bags this week.

With a spectacular first season in the books (and in print via Dark Horse Comics) Comic fans are in the midst of a strong return for Lara Dominguez and her champion ways with season number two. Let’s take a deeper dive into what’s happening her, shall we?

In case anyone is new to the story of the Black Ghost, the story centers around Lara Dominguez, a Creighton police reporter formerly from Miami. Dominguez becomes entranced with the adventures of The Black Ghost. As the story progresses in season one, Lara faces her own personal issues all the while, readers have front row seats to see Lara emerging as a hero that her city needs. It’s a great read that you should definitely check out and as previously stated, it’s out on print via Dark Horse Comics for those looking for a physical copy. That being said, Season 2 hasn’t shown any signs of a sophomore slump.

Season 2 starts out with Lara trying to find a balance out with her personal and heroic identities. Readers see Lara trying to deal with her issues head on by attending AA meetings. The struggle of balancing hero vs human life takes many forms as her reporter instincts draw her into investigating Creighton’s shady police commissioner Paul leGrande while the hero side of things takes a shot as a mysterious letter emerges that shakes Lara to her core. Factor in a new player in town with a deadly agenda and Lara’s life has never been tested like this. That player is names Harrow. Making an impact right out the gate, Harrow’s actions have now set Creighton on the edge of a massive crime war that Lara might not be able to stop. With a growing body count, Lara and Harrow met last issue with Lara being left for dead, only surviving because Harrow didn’t see her as any threat to her. This left Lara in a very bad state testing her will with everything she’s been working to improve.

This issue opens up with a sequence to where Lara meeting Rebekah, a Creighton Homicide office whom Lara has some history with. Once back to present time, Lara is confronted by Rebekah and Molly, her current love. They try to reason with Lara but Lara claims she isn’t drinking and is ok from the encounter with Harrow. So much so that Lara is continuing to infiltrate the club where she thinks holds the key to stopping the war once and for all. Once diving head first back into her mission and dodging the intervention, Lara finds herself undercover at an establishment names Stallions. Once sneaking into an office, Lara discovers a board with the city’s major players on it. Digging into the pictures, Lara starts to uncover the secret of Harrow and how she’s involved with this whole puzzle. This leads Lara into a path for more information but at what cost.

Readers won’t be ready for what unfolds next. Even after Lara starts seeing the pieces fit, does she even see the picture? With all of her investigation skills, is Lara ready for what lies ahead. The final moments of this book will answer that and leave some jaws dropped to what is set to happen next. The tension and stakes have never felt heavier on our hero.

Segura and Gallagher really amps up the drama within these pages. Lara's struggles with balancing both lives drives this story into some interesting directions. Seeing how she deals with the intervention by Rebekah and Molly was a very strong moment. The writing team present Lara as an imperfect person who continuously is trying to improve herself. Yet, with all her falls, she still gets back up trying to do the right thing. The slow burn approach to Harrow’s reveal was a great twist as well. Seeing Lara’s investigative skills come into play made for very noteworthy moments, none bigger than the conversation she has right after getting the lead on Harrow. Pacing gave these type of moments time to grow and connect with readers. The build to the last act was exceptional. It all lead to a great conclusion for this issue, with a great cliffhanger to build off of heading to the final issue of the season.

Not to be outdone, Kambadais hits on all the key story elements . Seeing first hand how Lara bounces back from the initial encounter with Harrow added a small piece of anticipation of where the story was heading. the big reveal also put into perspective Lara’s reaction to the reveal. At first glance, she is celebrating but once readers dig deeper into her reactions, Kambadais’s art sells the moments surprise element incredibly. Another noteworthy moment was the initial timepiece of when Lara meets Rebekah at the bar. With the additon of Ellie Wright’s coloring, it came across as a more detailed moment than one that misses the mark. Fortunately, readers don’t have that problem with this issue. Each fragment of the story escalates an intense visual feel to connect with the words being stated in those areas of the book.

Final point: the latest chapter of Lara Dominguez takes readers on a steady building powder keg of emotional moments. Segura, Gallagher, Kambadais and the rest of the creative team keep applying the pressure to Creighton’s defender and never lets up on seeing if she can remain strong enough to handle the challenge ahead. Season two of the Black Ghost rolls on into a must-witness finale. It’s excellent work that shouldn’t be missed at the Comixology store this week.

For this entry, we’re taking another look at one of the best versions of a franchise character from Valiant Entertainment. BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED #3 by DENIZ CAMP, JON DAVIS-HUNT, JORDIE BELLAIRE and HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU continues its captivating tale and portrayal of the high profile character. Note: This title is a Mature Readers one and some of the imagery shown in the issue and blog post is intense. That said, If you’re good to continue, let’s take a closer look at what’s happening here, shall we?

Opening page is the Valiant staple for new readers with a quick once-over of what’s going on. This run of Bloodshot has focused on his mission of taking care of rogue super agents that the government even thought were too dangerous. Two issues in and THIS has been a great depiction of what Bloodshot should be. He is broken, flawed and ruthlessly committed to getting the job done. It’s made for a must-read each time out.

The story kicks off with a mother in labor. What she births is anything but a child, much to the delight of those assisting her. The story then progresses to a serum in an older rural church. Two attendees will stand out to Valiant readers. One is Bloodshot. The Other is the franchise face of Valiant himself: X-O Manowar! Both are undercover hearing what the pastor is saying…with a snake slithering around his shoulders. There are some flashback scenes where the pair of heroes are discussing the enemy they’re both in conflict with. An alien race that the government has known about since 1979 and was using in warfare attacks. Now loose to the public, X-O and Bloodshot must stop it from spreading.

The pair have different ideas of how to handle the threat and form a reluctant pact to get the job done. With hearing what the pastor has to say, they follow the congregation to an unknown location. From there, readers see how the heroes are set up and in over their heads. How do they survive this situation? Can they survive each other long enough? Readers will have their answers with plenty of action and violence mixed in with an outcome some won’t see coming.

Camp has really captured Bloodshot’s voice and made him such a complex character. Valiant allowing a Mature readers book for the character helps showcase how flawed and brutal he can be. It couldn’t be in better hands than Camp. Seeing the dynamic between the two heroes made for an enjoyable read. Another aspect of this book which always jumps out is how Bloodshot deals with the false memories implanted in his mind. Readers get to see how damaged he is from what’s been done to him, yet he still pushes forward when it’s time for the mission. The resolution to what happens here wasn’t a huge swerve persay but seeing how the choice was made to finalize the ending jumped off the page. It was excellent pacing to keep things moving while letting the story grow. It’s epilogue played well to close the issue out with tying it back to the overall character of Bloodshot.

Davis-Hunt drawing monsters was a great reminder of his work on Shadowman with Cullen Bunn. The elements in play for the story brought some intense scenes for this book. Seeing how the pastor was fully entranced into the message of the alien was a difficult read for the right reasons. The body language given off showed how utterly committed the congregation had become and what steps the heroes were needing to go to free them. The action and violence played factors here. There are quite a few scenes where Bloodshot goes over and above what simpler heroes would to complete the task. The scenes with X-O were great complements to the seriousness of the story’s nature as well.

Final Point: The brutal adventures of one of Valiant Entertainment’s most high profile characters continues its ferocious and intense run without a missing a beat. Even with the addition of another superhero heavyweight in tow, Camp, Davis-Hunt and the team carve out their corner of Valiant with another can’t miss issue. Make sure to add this book to your collection on new comic book day!

The concept is very unique as there are a plethora of themes all unfolding with this book….and we’re only one issue in. With so much to break down with this issue, let’s not wait anymore and dive right in, shall we?

This issue opens up with a young girl named Mezzy paddling her way thru an apocalyptic wasteland. The scene is dark and depressing. The water is overrun with wreckage and metal. How can one survive in this world? Mezzy appears to have run out of food and is barely hanging on with the rough environment she’s trying to survive in. After sailing thru the flooded streets, Mezzy’s boat springs a leak and starts to sink, forcing an abrupt run into a bulding. However, Mezzy will find out very soon that the building is not abandoned as she thought.

An alarm is triggered and it awakens Maceo, a young boy whos watching Mezzy, which Maceo refers to as a “Acid Swamper.” fight a sea creature. This doesn’t appear to be the first time Mezzy has encountered such a being but handles the situation as best she can. Mezzy fights it off but not without Maceo shooting at the creature with a makeshift “boom” weapon of bowling balls. From here, the pair finally meet with Maceo and his homemade “armor” which Mezzy quickly dismembers. Mezzy starts shaking down Maceo for information. Readers witness that Maceo has been alone but is thriving on his own in the abysmal landscape. It’s almost a perfect utopia to what’s has happened to the world. However, when something seems too good to be true, it most likely is in a catastrophic world.

What is the truth behind Maceo’s situation? How will Mezzy move forward from this encounter? Readers get these answers plus more questions raised with a final sequence of events that will have fans clamoring for the next chapter asap!

Phenomenal first issue. Aaron introduces readers to a whole new world with two very different leads as their guides. Mezzy’s story comes from a view point of someone who simply survives no matter what. The world she lives in has made her cold and ultimately brash to anyone she encounters. On the flip side, Maceo carries true optimism of meeting someone new and being ready to move on from his ordeal. Aaron slides in a great twist on Maceo’s story once the layers are peeled back with will surprise. The pair are complete opposites in every way but their pairing creates a fascinating dynamic. It balances off the world they live in. The scenes that will most surprise are the final moments of the book. Seeing how the story progresses there will be a fun journey to follow along.

Tefenkgi shows off a very disturbing world plagued from something that devastated it. The imagery is very bleak and brings the struggle to make it day to day to the forefront. Mezzy’s encounter with the sea creature demonstrates how unraveled this world is. Seeing how standoff-ish Mezzy is to Maceo from their initial encounter reflects the world they live in. The biggest variable to this world is how Maceo comes across on panel. He appears to be kept away from the worst of this world while being home in the tower. This idea gets taken down a few notches when a reveal happens later in the issue that shows how he had been coping with the environment. Once readers hit the final pages of this chapter, they will be locked in on the adventure that lies ahead.

Final Point: Aaron, Tefenkgi, and the creative team usher in a story that takes readers on a trip ranging from hopelessness to blind optimism while two people try finding a way to prosper in an unforgiving place. Maceo and Mezzy are a reluctant pairing but one of huge potential to carry this incredible story. OUATATEOFW is one book to keep an eye out for when you hit the local comic shops this week.

In the meantime, they just wrapped up their latest project which is perfect for the holidays! What doesn’t scream holidays like Grandma? Grandma Chainsaw #1 finished its’ campaign crushing kickstarter goals and is getting ready to hit backers very soon. Let’s see what the team has in store for readers this go around, shall we?

The story kicks off with two people bound and gagged inside a deprecated house. Underneath them is plastic cause “Messes cause Stresses” per a voice of a narrator in the background. That voice turns out to be a sweet old grandmother. However, there is nothing nice and sweet about her as she kills the pair with a chainsaw! This is classic horror storytelling with a dash of dark humor mixed in.

While this is happening, four friends (Haiden, his sister Gabby, girlfriend Haley and Liz) stop at a gas station trying to find their way to the beach. Their GPS (and their phones) aren’t working so being lost on a dark and gloomy night isn’t ideal for anyone. They ask for help from someone “working” there but get little for their efforts: A raise of the arm and point. As they drive away, the worker dissolves as a zombie would, meaning the friends night is only going to get worse. As the drive down the road, it becomes more narrow and narrow until its a dead end. Ironically, a flat tire happens laving them stranded. “Luckily”, there’s a certain nearby house that a certain grandma is just waiting to “help” them.

As they go inside, there’s no working phone to call for help. However, there is a handyman who will stop by in the morning to take a look at the car. The foursome head inside for some comfort food and conversation with Hazel, the grandmother. As the evening progresses, so does the danger and fears. Readers see what happens when guests don’t mind their manners. What happens after dinner? Will one of the four not make it thru the night? And is there any help truly on the way? Readers will have those answers and more with a great kick-off to this story.

Dunford and Radford set the table for a well balanced serving of traditional horror with dashes of well-timed humor mixed in for balance. Hazel is everything you would expect on the outside for a horror antagonist. The writing captures her manical ways while she’s celebrating her attacks. There’s certain quirks she does that make for some memorable scenes. The “Elbows off the table” is prime example of this. Events move pretty quickly and not gonna lie, I laughed out loud at the ending with who shows up. No spoilers here, but it worked on many levels and Gabby’s comment to close out was perfect. The team truly enjoys what they do here and it shines thru the pages.

Balando’s art really brings out the creep and gore of the tale being told here. The imagery is dark and brooding when it needs to be. It’s also a credit to the coloring of Jasen Smith. No punches are pulled when Hazel does what she does. The teens that she encounters react as one would expect. There’s one notable scene involving teeth that illustrates this perfectly. Once the story gets down to business, Balando amps up the intensity of the panels. There’s a different to them when Hazel strikes much like horror movies build to that fever pitch before the payoff. Just wait for the ending sequence to. It segways nicely to set up the next chapter of an already wild series of events unfolding.

Final Point: EAT, SLAY LOVE! The team behind “Pocus Hocus” brings their magic over to a traditional horror tale and amp it up to 100. Readers (no the guests) are in for a treat seeing Hazel bring the terror with excellent writing and art sending them down their dark path into trying to survive the night in one piece. Make sure to keep an eye out for this and Pocus Hocus Soulless Edition wherever you can find them.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re picking up the pieces of the latest tale of Erica Slaughter in the pages of one of the best comics on the market! Something is Killing the Children #26 by James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design from Boom Studios ushers in a brand new status quo after last issue’s heartbreaking moment. It’s one I’m still not over after reading the issue a few times!

Before we deep dive into this issue, there’s only a few hours left to back James Tynion’s (along with PK Colinet, and Elsa Charretier)’s Kickstarter movie, “Room Service.” This should be a big hit when t’s released so don’t miss out on your chance to get on board now! That said, let’s start the review, shall we?

Something is Killing The Children #26 - on sale November 16th

Erica Slaughter’s re-emergence hasn’t gone without its fair share of problems. After re-surfacing in Tribulation, New Mexico hunting down a killing monster, Erica has been being hunted by The Order of St. George, who have sent the sadistic Cutter after her. The case hasn’t gone smoothly as the lone witness Gabi, hasn’t been very cooperative and brought Erica into the direct line of the creature. Erica barely escapes but is wounded in the process. All the while, Cutter makes the first big blow to Erica, killing her friend and confident Big Gary. The scene from last issue hit readers in all the emotions and leaves Erica in a broken state.

This issue picks up with Erica recuperating from her injuries in Riqui’s (a bartender and reluctant “guardian” of Gabi) parents place. She’s bruised and not opening up about what she encountered with the monster. While this is happening, Gabi is bonding with Riqui’s brother Johnny. The siblings clearly have issues with each other. Gabi is left by herself and is asked not to see Erica. Gabi doesn’t listen to this advice and sees more than she bargains for. Gabi overhears Erica’s assessment of current events. The future doesn’t sound so good for anyone.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Carter Thomas calls Riqui about the scene Erica and the monster left behind. While this is going on, a certain figure has made their way to Tribulation: Cutter! What she does next will set the tempo for the next round of her hunt of Erica Slaughter. Will Erica survive all the forces surrounding her now? Readers will have much to process with the new playing field set.

Tynion hits the ground running with building up the story after last issue’s epic goodbye of Big Gary. Erica is broken and latching on to whatever she can. This doesn’t come off as a good plan but Tynion showcases her dealing with grief by going head first into completing the plan. It makes for a natural emotional response to what has happened. The rest of the cast does their part to elude to more things to come but nothing outshines Erica’s dealing what’s transpired. Cutter makes a big entrance and tightening the hold she’s forming on Erica. Cutter comes off as making this job more personable that it has to be and this will work wonders for the eventual pay-off.

Dell’edera paints the picture of Erica’s pain splendidly as this new story takes over. Erica’s tough demeanor covers up the pain she’s feeling. Dell’edera’s stone-faced expressions for Erica drive that element home for readers. Cutter’s tale stands strong on its’ own as well. The encounter with Sheriff Carter made for a unique dynamic to where her story is heading. Cutter’s demeanor reflects how vicious she is about her assignment. The art portrays how much she enjoys what she’s doing and that’s a scary notion to comprehend. The other role players make their marks too but this issue belongs to Erica and the next phase of her life.

Final Point: Erica Slaughter’s road forward starts with a strong issue laying the new groundwork out. Tynion, Dell’edera, and Muerto blaze the new trail with excelling character moments along with convincing art to sell the point that Erica’s journey back is only just beginning. make sure to check this issue out at the local comic shops this week and sign up for the “Room Service” kickstarter before its too late.

Welcome to an all new edition of parlay Points, the comic book blog for the ODPH Podcast. For this entry, we’re continuing to follow an incredible series on the Comixology Originals line. Some of the best comics at the (digital) shops reside on this line and since its’ debut, Census has been an excellent addition. Census #3 by Marc Bernardin (Fatman Beyond w/ Kevin Smith), Adam Freeman, Sebastián Piriz, Bernardo Brice and Sarah Litt continues the long strange journey Liam Malone is on since he started working for the Census Bureau. Two issues in and the book is a delight to read. Let’s take a look at the latest chapter and see if that streak continues, shall we?

Census #3 - On sale November 15th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Demons. Leprechauns. Genies. This is the daily clientele Liam meets as he works for the Census Bureau. The “down on his luck” lead has been in some wild scenarios these past two reads and issue #3 starts off very innocent. It appears to be a normal (for once) neighborhood in Queens where Liam approaches a woman for a signature. Liam has been growing in this role as this is the fist time he’s been dressed up with shades on. The surroundings seem unique with statues all around the from door…..with the exception of one. Once Liam asks for the signature, the woman reveals herself to be Medusa!

Being accustomed to this world by now, Liam comes prepared with sunglasses covered by paper and a reflective template. Medusa turns herself to stone and Liam gets enough rock dust off for a signature. All in a day’s work. Liam gets back on his usual transit route and heads towards Brighton Beach to “Auntie Baba’s Bakery”. Liam appears to be investigating a grandmother working in a bakery with pictures of two children on her register. Everything seems normal, after all, who waits two hours for a Sharlotka if not? Liam tries the food and is sold on it. That is until he starts doing some research on the name of the bakery. Readers see the discovery and Liam’s reaction to the revelation.

What does Liam do with his information? Where does the story go from here after he starts digging. These moves aren’t stated in the job description but readers tag along with Liam as he tries doing what he thinks is right, even though not required. the resolution will catch some off guard. If you think this will be a huge surprise, just wait till the final panel as an Liam’s life gets turned upside down yet again.

Bernardin and Freeman took Liam into uncharted territory for this issue. The story shifts gears from the basic “get that signature” to now Liam has to question his moral instincts versus his job duties. It’s very telling on how he’s been able to stay somewhat grounded while dealing with the supernatural characters he comes across. Liam’s dynamic with his boss, Mr. Pictor, is an unsung bonus of this book. Liam trying to plead his cases to someone who is so desensitized to what is going on makes for a fun read. Another standout moment is when Liam is sent to Brooklyn and who he confronts there. The conversation plays out with makes for strong character work. The complexity of Liam’s character has made for some of the best moments of this book and continues to make a fascinating tale each issue.

Piriz continues to make some of the smallest character moments int must-see panels. The reaction to the Sharlotka incident created well-timed comedic relief before going into more serious drama. Seeing how Liam stands up to the true antagonist this issue was a great visual leading into a full page spread. The facial expression work Piriz does truly elevates this book. Seeing how viably shocked Liam gets with certain scenarios doesn’t get old and reminds readers he’s still human after all. It plays into why you can’t help rooting for him to succeed, even when he should have no chance to survive, let alone win.

Final Point: Liam Malone’s moral conscience gets pushed to the limits within this issue. What does doing the right thing mean in the land of the supernatural? Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz and the team present that dilemma to readers with excellent storytelling and art. The series advances forward with arguably it’s best issue yet. Don’t miss this book at Comixology this week.

RADIANT BLACK #19 by Kyle Higgins, Marcelo Costa, Carlos Eduardo & Becca Carey for Image Comics via Black Market Narrative kicks off a huge month for the line and picks up after an incredible separate tale with the origin of Radiant Yellow last issue. Let’s not wait any longer and dive right into the latest chapter of one of comics’ best series, shall we?

This issue starts off with an alien-esque object floating over Sao Paulo Brazil. Meanwhile, back in Illinois, two car jackets pull a robbery at a gas station. Thinking this is an easy crime, the criminals get a ride awakening of justice as their car is flipped over as they speed away. This is all due to the one and only Radiant Black, but is he “one and only” anymore?

At first, it was Nathan Burnett who discovered the power Radiant. After being injured and in a coma, Nathan's powers shifted to his best friend Marshall. This lasted until Marshall was overwhelmed by a group of rogues when Nathan regained the power Radiant. Post battle, the pair have decided to split the role of Radiant Black. Now in action, there seems to be a bit of “hero rust” from Nathan but nothing that won’t be worked out in time. Obviosuly with what he’s endured, this is to be expected. Post action, Nathan takes a moment to check out the latest events surrounding someone Radiant Black knows well: Satomi Sone aka Radiant Red. Satomi has decided to turn herself in for her past crimes. Readers bear witness to an interesting back and forth with Marshall and Nathan about how they know Satomi, which plays into their new stat quo.

From here, both Nathan and Marshall’s stories split into different paths. Something catches Nathan’s attention to where he catches up on the latest actions of Radiant Red, promoting a visit behind bars. As for Marshall, the object flying in Brazil might be something that he knows will bring nothing good. Luckily, Marshall gets an assist to investigate but what do they find when they get there? How does Nathan’s talk go when he starts asking questions? Readers are in for an exciting issue as the final page moments will have those answers and ”confirm” what’s happening is going to be nothing short of sensational moving forward.

Great kickoff to the new story. Coming off the break for the Radiant Yellow story (which issue #18 is a must read), Higgins jumps back into the dynamic between Nathan and Marshall with focusing on how this pair will co-exist as Radiant Black. The moments when Nathan is catching up about how Radiant Black “knows” Radiant Red is a great benchmark for how this will be set up for readers. Pacing was great for balancing out the two lead characters. Nathan’s story here stands out just a bit more as his conversation into Radiant Red’s current situation made for a highlight. Seeing how that talk goes makes for quite the dialogue. “remeeting” for the first time has a different feel to it, but the writing let the readers feel the awkwardness. Higgins crafts it with much uncertainty about what's to come. Marshall’s tale is just getting started but as he finds out what’s in Brazil, readers know that it will be a game changer. It can be forgotten in the tale that Marshall is still growing in his role as a hero. Seeing his reaction to what is coming made for an excellent close to his portion of the book.

Costa and the art team present some fun action sequences for readers in the opening sequence. Seeing how Nathan and Marshall both use their powers to shift into Radiant Black and stop the robbers was solid. The story of Nathan’s reaction to Radiant Red is very noteworthy. Nathan's reactions to talking with Satomi connects strong with the readers. Costa captures Nathan's unsureness of what he feels is coming to add the right amount of gravity to the moment.

Final Point: The tales of two heroes starts this next chapter with an exceptional issue. Higgins, Costa and the team present a character driven issue with splashes of super heroics to make for a can't miss read this week. Make sure not to miss this one at the Local Comic Shops this week!

Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine by Scott Snyder, Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, Chris Sotomayor and Tom Napolitano has brought an exciting tale of a young man who’s life is anything but ordinary after becoming involved in a situation bigger than he could ever fathom. Issue #3 just dropped so let’s take a closer look at what the next installment brings, shall we?

Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine #3 - On Sale November 8th

Dudley Datson is a student of the Brooklyn Academy of Engineering and the inventor of “Duds” an L.C.D. integrated fiber clothing. After debuting it with less than perfect results, Datson walks in on his mentor, Dr. Shae dying in protection a watch with special meaning from a group called the Prometheans. Datson literally cannot catch a break. The only one keeping him alive is Dr. Shae’s pet dog, Daedalus….who is no ordinary dog. Daedalus is the actual Daedalus of the Athenian Family of legend. They thwart off the inital wave of attackers to where Daedalus shows Datson the base of the Chymical Society, and why that watch is so important. Storytime is cut short as Perdix, Daedalus’ nephew has come home looking for the watch.

This issue jumps in (like the previous ones) with a small bit of narration concerning inventors. Issue #3 focuses on Labyrinths, and how they come across as a form of checks and balances to ideas. The time for talking stops there as readers are now back to present time with Perdix demanding the watch from Datson. Luckily for the young inventor, Daedalus has a few tricks still left up his sleeve and morphs into a combat version of himself. Daedalus puts Datson in a safe room and makes an attempt to fight his nephew on his own. However, this is no ordinary safe room as readers will see soon enough. The battle rages forth as the family members fight. When Daedalus is in danger of losing, Datson makes a dramatic entrance with a way to stop Perdix. Readers will definitely enjoy that panel shot!

With his luck being the way this is, how does Datson fare here? Readers see how the odd pairing of Daedalus and Datson need to work together and if they don’t the consequences can be dire. If they survive Perdix, what fate lies ahead for them? Can these two ever catch a break? Readers will have these questions answered and then some with all that unfolds from here. Just wait for the tremendous final image to drive home the danger that lies ahead.

Three issues in and one theme stays very consistent: Readers can tell how much fun the creative team is having making this book. Snyder keeps throwing in fantastic curves to the direction of the story. From last issue’s reveal of Daedalus’ true nature to this issue’s final moments, the plot-twists hit effectively. It feels larger than the story, but it works flawlessly to the tale being told. Having the brief narration to kick the books off is a creative touch that gives readers a loose sense of what could be a factor in the issue ahead. Issue #3 is no exception. Once readers see how that plays out, it adds to an already dramatic ending to this installment. The unlikely pairing of Datson and Daedalus will be what fans enjoy most about this issue. Seeing this pair have to find a way to work with each other and survive gives this story a whole new energy that all readers can appreciate. The story continues to push the imagination limits with where it goes each time out. This issue is no exception with some amazing creativity.

Igle delivered some eye-catching moments in this issue. Seeing the evolution of Daedalus with his combat gear was a treat. He’s been one character that since his reveal has been enjoyable to watch. The battle between Daedalus and Perdix didn’t hold back and made for an energetic, fast-paced fight. Datson’s re-entrance into that foray was another standout moment. Arguably, the moment that stands out the most is the pair’s argument right after their big fight. Igle plays into Datson’s anger and insecurities with how he’s drawn there. On the other side, even in canine form, Daedalus shows his emotion when Datson draws it out of him (see the “Watch Your Words… panel). The final image goes right into how much fun they’re having here. There is much to enjoy within these pages.

Final Point: Snyder, Igle and the creative team bring a visionary world to life without skipping a beat. Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine continues to be a must-read title due to its’ excellent writing and innovative art. The story is a lock to win over readers of all ages. It never misses a moment to impress and dive into an ingenious direction when needed to. If you’re looking for a fun, energetic read, look no further than this series and issue. Make sure you pick this up from Comixology this week!

For this entry, we’re checking out a graphic novel on the Comixology Originals line that has much to discuss from it. The Ghost of Wreckers Cove by Liniers, Angelica del Campo, Christian Argiz, and John Lind is an all ages tale that takes readers on a solid mystery adventure thru the eyes of a family on vacation. If Liners ‘s name sounds familiar, readers might know him as the Eisner Award winning creator behind Good Night Planet. Let’s take a closer look at this graphic novel, shall we?

The Ghost of Wreckers Cove - On Sale November 8th

The story begins with a father taking his two daughters, Christina and Martha out of the busy life of the city to a more relaxed place for the summer after losing their mother. That place is the Coast Of Maine. Being away for the summer might be exciting for some, but not the oldest daughter Christina. There is much unhappiness of being away from the land of electronics. Settling into a rented house on the beach is the “punishment” being served. The family’s rental is near an abandoned lighthouse. The father mentions that the lens is missing from the lighthouse, with more of a story behind what he’s letting on. Martha, the youngest is more than happy with this situation but Christina is not so sold.

While getting used to their new surroundings on the beach, the pair meets Ida, a resident of the beach that’s very happy to meet some new people. The three make fast friends. However, during a rainstorm, Ida seems to disappear while the pair duck into the lighthouse for cover. While waiting out the storm, a older ship appears to be crashing into the rocks. After it passes, the pair tell their dad the story. He brushes it off as an over active imagination. The pair don’t let go of what they saw and start comparing facts. They come to break down a few things that they have noticed. Not everything seems to be normal with Ida. Sensing that all these events tie into each other, the pair begins to start searching for answers. Where this journey leads the is into uncharted character water. Will they be able to swim thru what’s real and imagination? Readers will be taken along for the ride as the pair tries make sense of what can only be described as a summer to remember.

This story is an entertaining one for all ages. . Liners and Del Campo take readers thru many different directions as the story moves forward. There are many elements going on within these pages. The basic family dynamic is a noteworthy portion of the book. The reluctance of Christina’s acceptance of her new summer home is played off well with Martha’s constant optimism with their situation. The father makes his presence known but doesn’t overwhelm the daughters’ tale. The beginning of the book might feel slow-moving to some but once Ida crashes into their lives, the story starts hitting high gear. Ida’s secrets were nicely paced reveals when needed. At no point was there a full tip-off to what was happening overall (even when the mystery of why she’s such an important figure comes into play). Readers will be fully engaged once the mystery slowly starts unraveling. Pacing worked well to construct for the ending. Final moments concluding things on a high note. The story is an entertaining one for all ages.

The art captures the imaginative energy of this story to the fullest potential. Seeing how the family’s dynamic works will connect with the readers greatly as the story progresses. Witnessing how the father is trying to make this situation work adds to the storytelling. The panels where he is trying to explain “Amy Spyglass” are prime examples of this. This is a great counter-balance to when Ida’s story starts to become clearer. The flashback sequence where the sisters start finding out the truth played out superbly. The panel set-up with changing colors will grab readers and answer many questions for that section of the story. The color sequences make the final act’s moments jump off the page. It really makes for an enjoyable tale.

Final Point: The Ghost Of Wreckers Cove blends elements of supernatural mystery with grounded family factors that will become a delightful saga for readers of all ages. Liniers, Del Campo and the creative team present a mystery tale with a unique spirit all its’ own. Make sure to check this graphic novel out on Comixology this week.

For this entry, we’re spotlighting a series that is in the midst of its’ latest campaign on Kickstarter…and what a name to this book! BIGFOOT KNOWS KARATE! #1 by Dan Price and Casey Allen for Caged Rhino Productions was a huge hit with a wildly creative tale. Issue #2 just began its kickstarter run on October and looks to wrap up on November 10th. There are a lot of great incentives to sign up for volume 2 but before checking that out, let’s take a trip back to issue #1 and give you an insight on what’s happening here, shall we?

BIGFOOT KNOWS KARATE - CHAPTER 2 KICKSTARTER IS LIVE UNTIL NOVEMBER 10TH, 2022!

The story opens in a secluded forest. It is peaceful and quiet but someone appears to be hunting a rabbit. The hunter is not whom it seems to be. Readers get to see Bigfoot debut in a dramatic entrance saving the rabbit from a wolf. Just when one would think danger is averted, human hunters try shooting the rabbit. When the bullet misses their target, those hunters quickly become the prey as Bigfoot steps up to handle them. The action is swift and brutal. One thing is for certain: This is not your average Bigfoot of legend!

After dealing with the hunters, Bigfoot goes into meditation to deal with the physical and mental fallout from that small skirmish. The challenge to find inner peace is a solid break form the build of the first act. However, as Bigfoot takes this journey to another place. Within this realm, Bigfoot is challenged to venture into a land that teeters between “real and unreal.”On this path, he comes in contact with a mysterious figure that passes along a warning. With little time to process, Bigfoot awakens back in the “real world.” Once returned, he sees he’s not alone as standing in front of him: A GIANT KUNG-FU ‘THULHU?!?!?! Armed with his swords and a strong will, Bigfoot jumps into battle against the towering foe.

The battle is everything you want and expect! No punches pulled. Nothing held back. It’s a wild fight that Bigfoot can’t win but refuses to quit on. Their battle heads into some fun directions. The end results will have readers on their toes as some curves are thrown into the path of the story. It caught me off guard for the right reasons. Once the “smoke” all cleared, readers will be locked in to see where the next chapter takes them. Very entertaining first issue!

This was a really fun read. From the title alone, readers know they’re in for something special here. Price and Allen have flipped the narrative on Bigfoot and took the character into some uncharted territory. The book’s intro is a prime example of the “bait and switch” technique that shows up frequently here (and that’s not a bad thing). Seeing him trying to tame the beast within was a notable theme of the story. Price is on double duty as a co-writer and artist here so he knows how to balance things out for connecting with the readers. The conflict of peace and fighting is one that should be expected to grow moving forward.

Take nothing away from the action panels throughout the issue. The fighting scenes with Bigfoot and Thulhu were intense and not afraid to get extremely brutal when needed. Nothing felt like it was for shock value. The story lets room for the creativity to shine. Bigfoot being clearly outmatched needs to find ways to take the giant down. It’s safe to say he makes some progress in that area. The ending will be a nice swerve to keep readers guessing. Obviously, the creative team isn’t playing their full hand issue one. They gave enough for you to get hooked into the story happening here to be back for more.

Final Point: If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining comic, Bigfoot Knows Karate IS your book. Price and Allen make the mythical figure into a complex layered figure who is not afraid to fight when the cause matters. Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new series from Boom Studios that is starting to generate a bit of buzz amongst comic fans. BEHOLD, BEHEMOTH #1 is presented by Tate Brombal (of “Something Is Killing The Children” fame), Nick Robles (from “The Dreaming: Waking Hours”), and Andworld Design (nuff said). With this lineup assembled, this is sure to be a book to have on the radar at the comic shops. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening here, shall we?

This issue opens up with a funeral for a fallen officer named Liam. His brother, Grayson, is standing over his grave. During this moment, Grayson has a flashback to when he and his brother were young kids. From hiding out in a tent, the boys talk about a better future. Thier talk is interrupted by someone. Grayson is apologizing but Liam doesn’t seem too phased by what’s to come. As he opens the door to the outside, Readers are shown that things are drastically different than the simple campout. There are creatures and figures of mystery walking about in a whole new world. Grayson is snapped back to reality by Liam’s former partner Kavita.

Their conversation eludes to more going on here (at least from Grayson’s POV). Kavita brushes it off and orders Grayson to get some sleep and get right. Shortly after this, Grayson is back to work as a social worker. While checking in on the Wyatt Family, Grayson meets a young girl by the name of Wren. What should have been a routine check spirals into something more as later that night, the Wyatt Family are all found dead except Wren. What happened to the family? How does this connect (if at all) to Grayson? What is Wren’s secret and what does the final act represent? Readers are left with questions that they will be very invested with finding out the answers to.

Brombal doesn’t delay in throwing in the horror aspect with this story. Right from the funeral, readers start delving into the world of Grayson’s visions. Nothing is tipped off right away so there’s a sense of mystery to what is happening. Is it real or all in Grayson’s head? Brombal scatters clues throughout the issue that will leave readers guessing. The mystery of Wren is another dynamic that stuck out. Her story just started to unfold but there is a connection with Grayson and her. How that will play out is anyone’s guess at this stage. The closing act won’t bring closure but brings more intrigue to an already imaginative tale.

Very impressed by Robles work with this issue. Breaking down the worlds Grayson sees & giving each a different feel played out well. With the use of Red as the color scheme of Grayson’s visions, readers could feel that these were not welcomed places to be in. The facial expressions for Grayson and Wren added weight to the scenes taking place. They were already set up perfectly by Brombal, but with Robles art, they really drew more emotions of the reader to the story at hand. It’s a strong connection to feel what these characters are going thru (and this is only issue #1?!). The ending shot will have fans talking. There’s much to be excited about with this series.

Final Point: Brombal and Robles usher in the horror and mystery with a impressive debut issue. Grayson’s world has only begun to peel back the layers of the story but with the high stakes of the end of the world mixed in with his own sanity, it makes for a compelling tale not to miss! Make sure to check this out at the Local Comic Shops this week!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this entry, We’re checking out a brand new series by Boom Studios that has a great deal of hype behind it! DAMN THEM ALL #1 by Simon Spurrier, Charlie Adlard, Sofie Dodgson, Shayne Hannah Cui, and Jim Campbell welcomes comic readers to the world of Ellie "Bloody El" Hawthorne. What is all the hype about this issue you ask? Considering Adlard was the longtime artist on a book you might have heard of called “The Walking Dead”, that’s gonna make some noise. Factor in the rest of the creative team & there’s something big happening here. Let’s take a deeper dive into the debut and see, shall we?

The book opens up with a moment between Ellie and her uncle Alfie. The scenes (from Ellie’s point of view) shows how she is being taught magic. Obviously, this never comes easy and readers see how her early supernatural struggles play out. It closes on a fun scene as something is conjured up. However, that’s when the good times appear to end.

After a stop in the book, readers are taken into present day as they are now witnessing Alfie’s Funeral. An eclectic group of characters show up to pay their respects. It’s not exactly who you would think would attend but it gives the readers some insight into how respected and powerful Alfie really was. There is an exchange between a mobster (“Frankie Wax”) and a mysterious female during the ceremony. This transfers over to the post gathering. The female in question shifts from Frankie to look for Ellie. When they finally meet, their time is interrupted by thugs looking for Frankie.

At this stage, the situation goes completely off the rails. Readers won’t expect what comes next. The events take Ellie on a crazy path where she will have to fill in for her Uncle and become a problem solver. Can she step up to the task? What was unleashed in the results of her uncle’s passing? There’s a lot happening within these pages and is capped off by a solid final parting shot to raise more questions.

Very good first issue.In case anyone isn’t familiar with Spurrier’s work, he’s done Hellblazer in the past. That is a big plus when you have to write involving the supernatural. Ellie Hawthorne hits the ground running being an interesting character to watch. Spurrier writes her as someone finding the way out of her uncle’s shadow and into her own path. There’s many new characters that just scratched the surface of this story. That said, it will take another issue or two to see who plays a serious role in this tale. Nothing bad with that as this issue primarily focused on Ellie, Frankie Wax and a mysterious officer from New Orleans. Pacing was fine and the story covered a lot of ground. Cliffhanger ending will keep many readers engaged for next issue

Adlard brings a unique style to this book. Balancing the supernatural to the normal life can be difficult but with these pages, it works well. There’s no bigger moment of this than the Wake after the burial of Alfie. The events mesh well. The actions scenes jump out and the effects of the “supernatural party crashers” stand out with the difference in coloring (credit to Dodgson and Cui). Even with the book grounded in normacy, Adlard and company present Hawthorne’s daily life with a symmetry all its own.

Final Point: Damn Them All #1 welcomes readers into the crossroads of the supernatural and routine life. Ellie Hawthrone brings readers along for her entry into the family business as Spurrier, Adlard and the team set her up for quite the journey moving forward. Don’t miss this book when it drops at the local comic shop this week.
