Adams delves into two very different stories for this chapter. The first brings the tragic soul of Erastus to the forefront. An overwhelming sense of failure fills the mood. Seeing the slow build into the rageful being makes his encounter all the more sympathetic. The battle with Jordan plays out as any traditional fight would go. Its’ outcome will hit readers with a solid conclusion. This is a big contrast in comparison to Rayner’s mission.

From the beginning, the danger is downplayed by Rayner’s humor. An homage to a Hollywood character says all that’s needed to the readers. The pairing of Superboy to this provides more fun moments. Contrasting personalities make for the best moments. The outcome gives another healthy shot of excitement before it’s final page. Once here, events turn towards a more serious approach. A true threat has arrived which may be too much to handle. The writing provides a steady close to readers to ponder over.

Herbert establishes the failing sense of Erastus right from the jump. The facial reactions (even the subtle ones) build towards his eventual breaking point. A half page image introduces readers to the final version of Erastus. Jordan’s reactions elevate his foe. The big confrontation doesn’t disappoint. There’s plenty of vintage GL action involved here. Once the smoke clears, a somber tone floods the panels. Jordan’s body language perfectly compliments the tragic showdown at hand.

Rayner’s journey starts off with a full page glimpse of The Source Wall. As the heroes decent onto the wall, a fun visual is added into the mix. Seeing Rayner pull off a certain adventurer will put a smile on readers’ faces. This energy carries through each panel in play. Another great full page image sends the heroes into the close. Herbert and Fajardo Jr. construct one last full page image to depart with. It does its job of leaving readers wanting more as events start taking shape.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The tale of two Lanterns comes into focus for this “Fractured Spectrum” chapter. Adams’ writing navigates between the very different takes with ease. Herbert, Fajardo Jr. and Sharpe craft impressive images as the Hunt for Sorrow rages on. This one shouldn’t escape readers’ sight on NCBD.

Few writers can balance the huge lineup and establish true danger like Waid. Everything about this issue feels tremendously huge. Seeing Mr. Terrific wavering in confidence speaks volumes. It takes a bold move to grasp for any chance of hope. Adding Tefé Holland into the story provides a true wild card. The result gives the story new life as time starts running out.

Even with Holland taking up ample page time, there’s enough cameos to keep the emergency sense apparent. The story does diverge from Inferno to a key moment. Batman tracking down Martian Manhunter gives the readers an emotional break. Seeing the two friends talk is a welcomed time. It leads back to the closing of the issue. Waid pulls out all the stops to end this round. The fallout is perfectly set up. With the last page, there’s a true sense of paranoia grabbing the league and it’s not letting go.

Mora and Bonvillain unload the struggle Mr. Terrific is dealing with. Seeing his stress in trying to gameplay makes a loud commentary. The action sequences of the League trying to save people is as vintage as it comes. Every image feels larger than life. In dealing with this deep of a roster, that has to be each page. Mora doesn’t miss with this aspect.

Manhunter’s diversion kicks off with a half page panel. The sequence leans into the long-standing friendship. Readers watch as Batman’s reassurance never waivers. This sparks hope for this side plot. It is a different feel than the Inferno portion. Pacing ushers the story up to a break-neck speed. The pages burst with intensity. Its’ conclusion is a bold full page image. Once at the closing page, readers watch as the uncertainty creeps in. Seeing how the League bounces back from this will be one to watch.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

Inferno’s reign pushes the League into the path of an unexpected ally. Waid’s blockbuster writing checks all the boxes. It is perfectly compliment by Mora and the art team. The saga of the Justice league couldn’t be in better hands.

Sometimes the weight of being a hero is too much. That is the theme Williamson builds here. Lois Lane is brand new in her powered second career. Doomsday knows this and tries taking full advantage. The writing steers Lois into a dangerous place. Readers watch as the wrong choice pays a deadly cost. It is quote the character moment for Ms. Lane. This also draws out an all too familiar face into the spotlight.

The path Lex Luthor has walked has been such a captivating tale. In this moment, Williamson teeters on whether Lex is back or which Lex is this? There is great action thrown into this equation. It also gives off a traditional sense to what has transpired. The back end of the chapter hones in on the ramifications at play. This sets up a very strong close. Williamson throws in a few key surprises before bowing out for now. Rest assured, things will only get more intense from here.

In all honesty, Dan Mora is making a big claim for best Superman artist ever. The two page splash depicting Doomsday and Lane’s talk is spectacular. It is equally matched by the body language given by both. Lois’ bold confidence versus Doomsday’s manipulative plays. This leads into a dynamic near full page panel. The fallout from this moment is huge. It pushes the spiraling events into focus.

Superman’s eventual faceoff with Time Trapper will bursting with anger. The way Doomsday is prodding Clark to hit him ops off. Another superb two page splash hits readers directly. It does get upstaged by one person fitting of this space. Lex’s near full attack is loud! It represents many things before events turn dark. Lois’ ramifications haunt in this sequence. The coloring by Sánchez makes this time jump out. Pacing moves swiftly with the closing pages. Readers will have much to cypher through here. It’s an incredible experience to watch play out (esp. that last page)!

OVERALL GRADE: 9.6

Time is not absolute for Lois Lane as the Time Trapper targets Superwoman! Williamson takes readers on an exciting ride with the writing. Mora’s bold art with Sánchez and Maher give readers a wild experience to savor. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this!

Jon Pyle loudly crashes the opening pages. Readers watch as he ruthlessly attacks. It becomes a pacesetter for the remainder of the chapter. When Popso takes the first hit, the fallout is brutal. The message becomes crystal clear. Losing is not an option.

This drives Pyle back into service. Goro hires him on a very discreet mission. Events play out in a very violent fashion. One person of interest changes the game on everything. Readers watch as the long play begins to acquire game-changing information. It moves very fast while mixing in various spy themes. This works to keep the audience guessing. Once at the close, events end more intrigue. There’s never a dull moment with this issue.

Santacruz and Reber opens with a full page image of Pyle at work. The break-in to Popso turns into a wild scene. There’s no shortage of the violence at hand. Both brands office scenes carry this same energy. Readers get an up close look at how failure is tolerated. It’s equally matched by the maniacal behaviors of the twins. Each close-up shows heir twisted drive to reign supreme.

Pyle’s mission takes him on a bloody adventure. Konot’s lettering stands out in these panels. The pursuit of Dina Deluxe comes across as charmingly evil as the spy game gets. Deluxe’s reactions indicate she’s buying into Pyle’s lies. This leads readers into the closing pages. A simple dinner turns out to be anything but simple. The art team mixes in a few wrinkles to ff set the mood. It’s a fitting end to a very rambunctious opening.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

A dangerous web of lies and deception forms under the guide of cola companies in this unique tale. Palmiotti & Johnson take readers on a very different spy story. Santacruz, Reber and Konot head into the chaos and charm with the art. What side will take victory is really anyone’s guess.

This shifts the story to focus on the most polarizing member of the 4 heroes.

Donatello clearly stands out from the group for this issue. His “talks” with Master Splinter will keep readers locked in. Amongst the bickering between brothers, Don is determined to steer the ship. D.A. Hale proves to be a worthy adversary as the full court press is placed on the Turtles. There is a moment of clarity given that looks to be a turning point. The dialogue reinforces the need to come together. Results can be seen in the closing pages. An action is taken that will undoubtably start a violent domino effect. Get ready for a true battle of New York.

Ferreyra kicks events off with an intense full page brawl. The following pages never loose this speed or impact. Readers can truly grasp the frantic fight for survival. The “taxi” panel is prime example of this. Coloring of the speeding car strikes a chord. It gives a fitting end to this round before slowing down to regroup. Gears shift to the internal fighting. Even with no punches thrown, the verbal jabs can be felt.

The broken state of Donatello shines on the pages. Clearly, his persona is scene stealing amongst the families anger. This is a good pause before the action kicks back up. Each character under attack gets a fair amount of page time. A two page spread brings everything together before heading into the final portion. Donatello’s visions come into play before the results close the show. Readers leave knowing drastic times and measures are en route in the fight for survival.

CAPTAIN AMERICA & VOLSTAGG #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

The Marvel COMICS universe has a deep line-up of characters. Each timeline, world and powerset all stand out for various reasons. When they cross paths, it leads to some creative takes and dynamics. One writer in particular is leading a small run of stories playing off unique pairings.

In this chapter, JMS gives a few new layers to his character. This plays well off of the Captain. After a brief chase scene, readers see the true tale unfold.

Volstagg’s reasons of action cast a new light. A secret of Volstagg’s past comes back around. It fuels his search for Cap’s help. Readers see how the complicated matter needs Steve Rodgers to assist. The adventure plays out as one may expect. It is very unique to see Rodgers in this element. The writing displays his loyalty to a friend. It also shows the power of a good lie. Events roll up nicely to depart both on their next adventures. An enjoyable read never the less.

Chang and Maiolo play into the gritty espionage world of Cap to kick things off. The panels are all high paced action. They hit their marks before thrusting the Captain into Asgard. Once there, events shift to a more calm state. This is in large part to the selling pitch of Volstagg.

Flashback moments of Triton and Volstagg’s “double life” will be a win with readers. Each show a new side of the jolly warrior. This leads into a gorgeous two page battle splash. Readers watch as Volstagg’s ruse comes into fruition as action commences. There’s a solid extra historical page thrown in for good fun. Oce at the closing pages, events lead to a strong closing shot. The final full page image sends readers off to their next adventure with fun and style.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

What happens when you mix a jolly Asgardian with the Sentinel of Liberty? A fun adventure with some deceptive heart behind it. JMS constructs an orthodox tale with many moving parts. Chang, Maiolo and Caramagna weave in drama along with strong action. This is one for readers to get a true vision of the wide MCU landscape.

With no Nathan by his side, Marshall tries finding balance. Readers watch as he tries finding some normalcy. This comes in the form a date. Escaping his alter ego becomes difficult. Once that stop concludes, a growing mood becomes clear. Perception is Reality. Not everyone loves Radiant Black.

This leads into the next phase of the book. Chicago is reeling from the Catalyst War fallout. Higgins throws in many twists as a new rogue debuts. Readers watch with Marshall as the public’s feeling boil over. It is a point that shows the downside of being a hero. Whether it’s drowning out the noise or dealing with fallout, the writing puts Marshall directly in front of it. This leads to a question of doubt before the final page. Once here, Marshall’s rebuilding may crash before it even begins to rise.

Ferigato and Fernandes pace out panels very well right from the start. The build to Marshall taking flight is good. It gives readers an insight to where things are now. A two page splash alludes to a return to normalcy. As the issue progresses, it is far from that. The images of downtown Chicago drive home the painful fallout of the war. Even as Marshall has a date, the sense of doubt lingers through him.

The podcast playlist image leads belief of Marshall dealing with public opinion. His mannerisms as he listens speaks of someone who’s still coping. There isn’t much time for him to fully grasp this. A case he shows up for proves to be much more dangerous than he thought. The art team presents a dire picture. It is one that sticks to Marshall as he ventures to the web. An excellent full image shows off the online comments looming over our hero. Readers watch as the fallout here leads into a dire reflection. There’s no rest for heroes concerning the last page. One final full image leaves no doubt that fans better prepare for what’s coming. Here we go!

Welcome back to the Massiveverse! Higgins balances through Catalyst fallout masterfully. The writing gives Marshall an all out challenge while redefining the stat quo. If you want action, you’ve come to the right place! Williamson loads this issue up with some high-octane moments. The Crimson Twins make an immediate impact. Their chase of Duke and co. leads to a dangerous call. Readers watch as even the best laid plans sometimes fail. It is a polarizing call to make. Knowing what else could transpire, the decision exemplifies what the Joes are all about.

On the flip side, the evil of Cobra slowly slithers to the page. The deadly press on Stalker shows how far they’re willing to go. It leads to a calculated strategy before secrets are revealed. Readers witness the endgame in this beginning encounter. The closing act throws another curve ball into play. Just when you think you know the answers, the writing changes the questions completely.

Reilly and Bellaire waste no time escalating the pace. A two page spread shows the Twins in full pursuit. Duke’s expressions say more than words. There is a sense of worry creeping in. This spills over into the fight’s next phase. No punches are pulled as the confines of the road get displaced. In its wake is a more domestic scene where the violence can’t stand. It’s a heavy dose of big action within the Energon Universe’s premier team. Willaimson pens an intense chapter with the writing. Reilly, Bellaire and Wooton hit a bullseye with explosive panels. Judging by the last page, the story hasn’t even begun to cap off.

Waid isolates the heroes to their own separate stories. Batman focuses his efforts onto the Floronic Man. Superman tries playing peacemaker with Aquaman and King Ronal. Both have their equal amounts of tension. It pushes both heroes into familiar territory. This works Moreso with Batman than the Man of Steel.

The writing shows Batman’s sly way of using his detective skills. Simple banter peaks into the misguided reasons for the attack. It lends itself into a nice segway for more assistance in dealing with the threat. Superman has a more personal connection in this matter. History with Lori Lemaris overshadows the meeting of kings. As readers hit the final act, both stories unravel at the same time. It concludes the issues with key developments surfacing. Both plots had turning points. How both come back together is one of many questions left after the final page. This is superhero drama at its finest.

Gutiérrez and Bonvillain take the drama to new heights with the art. The initial encounter with Batman and the Floronic Man hits with brief action. Readers get a retro style origin page for the big bad of the story. It’s look is very reminiscent of 70’s era comics. Events shoot back to the present and the underwater war set to explode.

The full page image of Aquaman and Mera riding into battle sets the mood perfectly. Even with Superman’s brief involvement, nothing is taken away from the moment. Another full page image spotlights the full onslaught of Ronal’s forces. Readers will excited to see another DC fan favorite crash the party. A near full page image welcomes them to the conflict. As events speed up, the closing page slams the brakes on the pace. The collage of panels unveil more story points that readers won’t want to miss next issue. It’s a solid parting shot of the crisis below the surface.

The schemes of the Floronic Man come to fruition with another fantastic issue! Waid’s writing juggles the many crisis at hand with ease. Gutiérrez and Bonvillain deliver on stunning images to drive the conflict forward. It’s a must have for any superhero fans!

There is one person who Henshaw has disrespected as a foe. This causes a shift in direction that shows a last attempt to save the day.

The writing showcases Montoya’s strengths as a hero. Her escape plans hinge on the slick method of disruption. Its’ result launches the story into new territory. The writing pushes Rocket directly into Alva’s path. Even with a future in doubt, her fighting spirit shines. This becomes a catalyst for Dakota’s last stand. Readers will be all in for the final fight. Pacing moves events quickly into its’ climax. Once at this stage, the common theme comes back full circle. This series has been anchored by Rocket. It’s perfectly fitting she becomes the primary factor in its resolution. The closing pages conclude on a firm landing space. It leaves a bright future for a hero fully poised to take the franchise mantle of this universe when it returns.

Once back in the present, Ram V takes readers into a more light-hearted area. The dynamic between Oberon and the Frees provides great one-liners. This balances out the drama of the child. It also gives a detour to Karok Ator. That portion teases more than anything. Once in the final moments, the Gods depart in a surprising note. It makes its mark but leaves the audience wanting more of what’s to come.

Art duties are spilt between Cagle (Present time) and Federici (Chronicler past). Cagle hits readers with an intense two page splash of Ator’s takeover. Pacing slows down from this open to focus on Metron and Chronicler. Their journey into the past floods panels with gorgeous visuals. It carries a unique sense to them. Readers get lost in the eternal plot before being thrusted into the present.

Cagle constructs a very grounded approach to the Free’s plans. Oberon and Barta’s mannerisms jump off panels. It is a welcomed detour from all the chaos playing out. that is saved for Apokolips. Ator’s time is sparce in this chapter. The art makes the most of those portions. It does get overshadowed by the Free’s actions. The closing page leaves readers with a loud statement of what’s to come. Cagle leaves no doubt it will be a long wait until next issue.

The latest installment of Fourth World drama steers into the past for its drive. Ram V directs traffic into a multi-stationed tale. The art team brings high skill to this area while grounding events back in the present. With many moving parts, delaying to jump on board is simply not an option.

Readers watch as this new ability opens up a sliver of hope. It also introduces a new player in the game. The writing carries the traditional superhero themes. There’s plenty of big action in the mix. Where it finds its’ strength is in the new challenge thrown at Curry. This pushes towards a great cliffhanger ending. There are many elements at play which is nothing but wins for the audience.

Timms and Lokus mix in great images of the King before marching forward. The aliens at play carry a sci-fi look to them. Aquaman’s disposal of the threats comes across larger than life. Greenteeth hits readers with a horrific look. The resulting action leads into a new aspect of this run. Panels show Curry’s newfound abilities to be game-changing. This will have readers guessing what’s happening until next issue. Readers will have a great time seeing these visuals.

Its’ outcome is a fresh take which spirals out of control.

A declaration leads into a massive altercation. Snyder locks readers in as Batman takes the offensive. The result proves the inexperience of a young vigilante. Black Mask is written as an unhinged psychopath pulling all strings. There are no punches pulled. Violence takes over until the final act unfolds. Once here, Wayne’s best plans prove fallible. It is fitting for the constant battles raging out of control.

This carries through to the Cybertron portion. The Autobots there make a play to gather help. It is full speed ahead as the action rages on. Elita steals the spotlight while handling her business. Considering how damaged Ultra Magnus has been, any signs of life here push the story along. Once the resistance breaks away, they give fans a monstrous moment. Hope may have arrived. The final page looks to be a true catalyst for change. A solid ending to the wild fighting at hand.

Corona and Spicer add more depth to Beachcomber’s mind frame. The images back up his claims of seeing a larger picture. It’s a big contrast to the state of Ultra Magnus. The near full page image shows the broken Autobot in a new state. Their images for Optimus Prime are small but effective. Knowing he may have lost control only sink their ship further.

The Cybertron portion is filled with emotion and action. It carries a Hollywood aura as the final resistance stand takes hold. Elita’s fighting is given a strong half page to convey her message. This goes toe-to-toe with Prime’s daring rescue attempts for the humans. With Bruticus and Devastator laying waste to Seattle, Prime switches gears to the defense. A half panel shows the fruits of his labor. It is quickly overshadowed by the final page. The full image welcomes a big surprise into the never ending conflict. This is just another day in the office for the high skilled creative team here.

Stane and Starr demonstrate the slow burn effect both devils are taking. Starr is being string against temptation. The writing shows the drastic measure taken to ensure Starr falls. There should be no surprises as to what lows are taken to hit goals. Fallouts keep moving the humans into new areas. Soule keeps a fair dose of laughs blended in to assist in pacing. The closing pages wrap up events on a strong point before descending next chapter.

The artistic visions of Browne are second to none. In the opening pages, Hell’s cruise liner is everything and more. Screw’s rise to power is detailed and crafted. The flashbacks hit their key points showing what evil he possesses. It’s overshadowed by his own proposal. Seeing his presentation come to life only spells more troubles to come for humans.

Starr and Stane’s reaction to their devils is deceptive in effect. The split page panels indicate the slow breakdown. There’s nothing over the top on their methods. This is saved for Rake. Browne’s art shows what levels she’s will to go to get what she wants. The results are an awkward panel when Starr achieves a goal. It is that kind of state of mind that gives this series its edge. The parting pages reveal a more celebratory feel. Considering what just happened, it is a solid place to leave before opening up another sin.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

It’s sinful to have a series this good. Soule and Browne bring out the bad in their favorite devils with this chapter. Strong writing keeps the dark themes concealed with sharp humor. Browne and the art team construct phenomenal imagery as the Devils continue their evil ways. There’s no shortage of win on this series.

The Queen’s concept of biological control is very ingenious. Her demeanor is cold and calculating as she sets the stage. Readers get to witness this concept in action. A highway robbery display the power of control. It is intense and unapologetic. Much can be said for Shaw’s involvement. His introduction to this world has many layers behind it. Where events ultimately end up prove to be the start of an unforgettable journey.

Henderson’s art encompasses the dirty underworld Shaw resides in. The opening sequence is tense and harsh. The two page splash perfectly sets the tone for the remainder of the books. Once events rewind, the Queens vision starts taking shape. There are many mature images that are on full display. It adds to the seedy world which the Queen rules upon.

The heist provides a high paced display of power. Henderson and Azpiazu mix in blurred panels to display the bio hold. It leads to big action with a few shocks in the mix. None more surprising than how the robbery ends. Nothing is held back. This pushes towards the closing act. Shaw’s stat quo is flooded with a sense of anxiousness. His reactions never seem to break as secrets come to life. This leads to the full page ending. At this stage, readers are fully ready to delve deeper into a crime story unlike anything else.

Biology and Crime may sound like a unique pairing. The life and times of Mason Shaw being to show readers how engaging this concept can be. The writing also gives Cruz and Simon Bas a segment to settle into Corps business. With an ensemble cast, spotlight pages are tough but manageable. This becomes even more challenging with the latest addition to the Corps.

It is a very familiar face that commands time in the story. Readers watch as they make an immediate impact. This carries into their first mission. A rampaging creature draws the Corps into their path. What follows lends itself to how this wildcard affect the mission. The end result proves to throw another shock into the mix. With the amount of personalities in play, the writing hits their key points. Just as events seem to settle, the writing team throws another surprise into the equation. Pasarin’s art is very detailed how each character reacts to the new dynamic. The result is one fans will enjoy. Each panel brings out the best of the conflicting personalities. Few things have been referred to as unavoidable. Death is one of those subjects. It can also be said Destiny is in that mix. Jessica Harrow’s life is a combination of both. Being the heir to Death’s throne, Harrow has tried outrunning this path. How will she fare when Time tracks her down?

GRIM #21 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS) continues to be “the Coolest Book at the LCS” with its’ latest chapter!

Leave it to Phillips and company to throw more surprises into a deeply woven tale. The introduction is very familiar to long-time readers. As it progresses, this changes quickly. Phillips plays off Jessica’s deciphering to bring forth the latest addition to the cast. It also puts Jessica into a unique position. Her avoidance of her destiny has been a main driver for her character. This issue showcases many possibilities (along with great one-liners) as different timelines are shown.

None might be as stronger hitting than the last one. It is a vision that can be unavoidable. The writing vents Jessica’s frustration. As someone who wants her own choices, it seems that might be out of her control. This leads into a very shocking confrontation. Another factor has been thrown into this equation. Phillips places a fantastic twist that will catch readers off-guard. It serves as a perfect cliffhanger for Jessica as she searches for answers but finds more questions waiting. Top level storytelling at its’ finest.

Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano provide a re-imagining of a classic moment to start events off. If anyone has questions about great lettering, Napolitano instantly reminds everyone why he’s one of the best. This leads into a full page image that is anything but a rewind. From here, the journey for Jessica stops by a new timeline. The “college days” hides the underlying themes while mixing in enjoyable moments.

This is all capped off by a gorgeous two page splash of multiple timelines. There are great easter eggs homages planted in the spread (“Eight Limbs”!). Time and Jessica’s confrontation carries a tension to it that makes the close even stronger. Flaviano and Renzi crafts stellar half page splits of timelines. This builds to the final full page panel. The mic drop moment is guaranteed to lock readers in until the next chapter drops.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

Jessica Harrow is confronted with an unavoidable fate in another spectacular chapter of “Grim”. Phillips’ writing blends in a new dynamic while challenging Jessica’s fate. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano continue to prove why they’re one of comics best creative art teams with their high caliber work. There’s nothing like this series at the LCS!

JSA #4 by Jeff Lemire, Joey Vazquez, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) continues its’ “Ragnorak” storyline with Dr. Mid-Nite stepping into the spotlight.

As eluded to, Dr. Mid-Nite takes center stage for this issue. Lemire brings out the tactical side of Beth Chapel. Her dealing with Solomon Grundy is a feat that readers will applaud. The writing unveils Beth’s internal monologue. There is a sense of fear and worry in the tone. It is a natural reaction as she ventures further into the Injustice world.

Readers also get more insight on Obsidian. Since the first issue, it has been unclear what is truly unfolding. Lemire speeds up the pacing to get through this portion. It doesn’t miss hitting its key points. All roads tie back together with Chapel. The ending is a solid cliffhanger. It is a straight forward superhero ending that keeps the suspense high for what’s next.

Vasquez steps in for art duties with this issue (Guerrero remained on coloring). The faceoff between Chapel and Grundy is given a near full page image. It kickstarts a quick action portion. This gets slowed down for a half panel shot of the Injustice Society. Readers watch as their plans become exposed. It solidly caps off events before switching focus.

Obsidian’s story is more emotion driven. His reactions to his “hospitalization” connect with readers. It loudly states the frustration and doubt of what’s happening. The art team gives a great full page vision of Obsidian back in costume. Story pacing also pushes the art to quickly burn through these moments. The final pages deliver on action and stealing more hope away from the league in their darkest hour. It definitely keeps the vintage feel alive right to the end.

Dr. Mid-Nite is the last hope for the JSA in this fast-moving chapter. Lemire’s writing brings out a new side to the young hero. Vasquez, Guerrero and Wands construct very sleek superhero themed art as the ed of days approach DC’s classic team. Definition superhero storytelling which is always a crowd pleaser.
