BATMAN #151 by Chip Zdarsky, Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Clayton Cowles (Bonus Harley Quinn story from Tini Howard, Marianna Ignazzi, Giovanna Niro and Cowles) sees the Bat and Cat go undercover to find a way to stop Waller’s evil plans.

Throughout the chaos, a very classic tale is being woven. Zdarsky plays into the unique relationship of Bruce and Selina for its’ foundation. Knowing the past year (post Knight Terrors), to say “its’ complicated” is an understatement. The intro glosses over that area to get to the business at hand. Once the situation is explained, it’s a quick start to the mission.

Seeing the seasoned pros go to work undercover, readers watch as the ruse comes to an abrupt head. The addition of The Suicide Squad gives a fresh challenge for the Bat and The Cat. Bizarro steals scenes with Batman as things progress. However, the star of the book is the union of the Cat and the Bat. Zdarsky charges into the final act with a personal moment between the two. It leads into a more surprising location for their heist. How this will play out is any guess but a solid beginning never the less.

Hawthorne, Di Benedetto, and Fajardo Jr. lock in on the emotional pull between Bruce and Selina often with the art. The opening sequence feels very familiar as the long time lovers reunite over the heist at hand. Bizzaro watching the Squad get off the plane via full page panel adds raises tension of the story.

Once the Squad comes face to face with the pair, the action ramps up. Panels move at a high pace. Bizarro makes another big splash with a huge one page shot. This leads into the closing moments that bring events full circle. Seeing Batman show emotion was a familiar break in the action.

Considering recent events, it is a return to basics. Heading into the final page, readers watch as the pair’s luck runs out. The art team gives a strong final image before concluding for next time.

FINAL POINT: 7

The Bat and The Cat are back with a traditional mission at hand. Zdarsky’s writing sets the stage for an enjoyable saga. Hawthorne and company balance the action with some conventional interacts that play right into the drama. Where we go from here in anyone’s guess.

GATCHAMAN #2 (MAD CAVE STUDIOS)

For this entry, The Science Ninja Team is back! GATCHAMAN has returned to pop culture via Mad Cave Studios! A whole slew of new books based off the Tatsunoko Productions property just hit comic shops. Each title captured the classic formula from the animated series of 1972 while giving it a modern flare.

Now heading into the next issues, fans are very eager to see what’s next for the franchise.

GATCHAMAN #2 by Cullen Bunn, Chris Batista, Carlos Lopez and Buddy Beaudoin leads the next round of the legendary team into the local comic shops.

Bunn sets the stage for a classic heroic tale. The writing carries much of a straight forward pace with events unfolding. Pacing is very quick but never feels forced. The action sequences mirror the electric times of old. From here, the story switches back to an undercover attack. Bunn juggle the large cast with great ease. There wasn’t a wasted panel shot when taken.

Galactor and Berg Katse get a poignant spotlight in the issue. It provides more insight onto the team’s most despised villain. The story’s resolution is textbook. That is not a bad thing when dealing with a long-standing property as Gatchaman. It offers a fun twist on where to take their fight next. This was a great adventure of any long-time fans of the series.

Batista and Lopez construct an excellent two page splash to kick off the action style. This ultimately leads into another full page image that will have readers amped. Seeing the team unveil this option of combat is a sure win.

The conversations with Katse pour with his blatant charisma. He is their top villain for good reason. the art showcases him in said manner. It also allows the team to counter his advances with great action panels. The closing image is a nice swerve that can only lead to more danger and thrills next issue.

FINAL POINT: 8

The return of Gatchaman gifts fans with another thrilling challenge. Bunn’s writing taps into the vintage superhero playbooks and scores. Batista, Lopez and Beaudoin give fans great action fitting of the franchise. This is a perfect time to jump on board and see what all the hype is about.

THE PEDESTRIAN #1 (MAGMA COMIX)

For this entry, we are checking out the latest from a company on the rise: Magma Comix! In the past year, they have launched a very solid line of books. With such hits as The Principles Of Necromancy and The Scale Trade, Magma looks to keep their hit streak going with its’ latest title. It also might be one of the most unique superhero stories in recent memory.

THE PEDESTRIAN #1 by Joey Esposito, Sean Von Gorman, Josh Jensen and Shawn Lee says “Justice always has the right of way”!

Let’s take a closer look and see if you need to run or walk to the comic shops for this one!

With the premise centered around a speed walking savior, there were some questions as to how this works. Esposito mixes in the heroics with deadpan humor to craft an entertaining read. The title character makes an early splash rescuing a pawn shop employee. Instead of stopping the attacker, the hero follows the crosswalk rules and lets him escape. This type of quirky set-up only scratches the surface of what’s really going on.

From here, the story dips into a few other avenues. Readers are introduced to some new players in Summer City that foreshadow a bigger saga looming. Pacing keeps the mystery moving along with the laughs. The Pedestrian’s “fish out of water” reactions work to keep readers off the true tale. Esposito builds off of this with the closing act. A “simple” rescue teases more that meets the eye. It’s a great reflection of what this issue and series has to offer.

The series reunites Esposito with his “Pawn Shop” co-creator Sean Von Gorman. The art brings out a deceptive feel to a small town of secrets. Von Gorman (along with Jansen) crafts The Pedestrian’s “first” rescue with a full page image of him…obeying the traffic light. The reactions of Kira (the employee) are priceless as it copies the audience.

This balances out the more serious tone of his rogue’s panels. Readers can sense the danger building until the full page reveal. The final pages tie up another adventure while leaving a small present. One small panel will have readers formulating theories on what is really going on in this small down. The art kept things very simple which can only slow roll the true nature of the story from here.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

In this day and age, trying to reinvent the superhero wheel is very difficult. Esposito and Von Gorman find a way to take a hero out of the crosswalks and into the cosmos of creativity. The writing and art carry an enjoyable story while laying the ground work for something bigger in due time. This will be one to watch as it evolves.

C.O.W.L. 1964 #1 (IMAGE COMICS/BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, we are heading back to “Comics’ most exciting line”! With events such as “Supermassive 2024” and “The Catalyst War” on many readers’ pull lists, the MASSIVE VERSE strikes with an unlikely sequel.

In 2014, “C.O.W.L.” debuted from Image Comics. The series spotlighted “the Chicago Organized Workers League.” Its’ vision of superheroes branched off from the traditional themes. With dealing with a public with trust issues along with each other, the heroes’ escapades won over readers and critics alike.

Now 10 years later, the original creative team comes back to continue their story. It was also announced in May of 2024 that “C.O.W.L.” is officially apart of Black Market Narrative’s Massive-Verse. With a high profile and anticipation built, how does the latest arc begin a new legacy?

C.O.W.L. 1964 #1 by Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel, Rod Reis and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou looks to pick up right where it left off with its’ debut chapter.

Let’s take a closer look and see how this team shapes up after 10 years.

Within a few panels, Geoffrey Warner hooks readers into his ideal vision for “C.O.W.L.”. The bold ambition of talking C.O.W.L. to a national level doesn’t come without strings attached. Higgins and Siegel feature Warner as a cutthroat businessman. The manipulations used on a few (former) members react loudly to the depth he is willing to go. It is not one of a typical hero per say. One thing C.O.W.L. walks is the grey area of characters. This shined in the first series and returns just as strong for this arc.

The issue gives a fair share of action, but heavily goes in on building the drama. Once in its’ final act, there is some reveals that are locks to pay off big near the end. However, Warner continues to be the character with well-deserved attention. Readers will have much to talk about with a strong cliffhanger ending. This will deserve an immediate re-read with the layers to the overall picture unraveling.

Reis brings the 1960’s to the present with some amazing imagery. Warner’s early meetings convey the tense drive he has to push his agenda. With the simple mannerisms displayed, the art connects with the readers of how brazen Warner’s plans are. This leads right into an uncomfortable conversation with some other key players. Reis delivers on the reactions to sell the moment with no hesitation.

As previously mentions, there is a great action sequence later in the issue. Reis constructs the brutal encounter with a huge assist from Otsmane-Elhaou. With every attack, the lettering amplifies each panel. reader can’t help but be locked in until a full page image concludes the confrontation.

As the closing pages begin, the mood in the story shifts. It builds towards a shocking announcement to close with. Reis gives a perfect final image to send readers off to immediate begin places bets on where things go from here.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

The return (and beginning) to the Massive-Verse’s past delivers on an incredible first chapter. Higgins and Siegel craft a script filled with deceptive maneuvering. Reis brings this multi-leveled story to life with exceptional art. Settle in for what is sure to be an incredible ride!

ABSOLUTE POWER #2 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the takeover of the DCU has begun! A new trinity has emerged. Their plan of eliminating Earth’s heroes rolled out to great success. In one orchestrated attack, Amanda Waller and the Trinity Of Evil decimated the hero community. Seeing Superman depowered and dying struck a chord throughout the fandom.

With their next moves, time is running out for the remaining heroes. Can they rebound and get on the offensive?

The most devasting attack Waller has unloaded isn’t the depowering. It’s the personal wound driven into Superman. Waid pens the intense barrage with a heartless theme behind it. The move does more damage than any Kryptonite can ever cause. This leads to an erratic Man Of Steel trying to steer a lost cause.

One character does steal a lot of thunder with a speech fans will be raving about. Nightwing has emerged as the new face of DC. Waid gives him a legendary moment that won’t be soon forgotten. From here, the writing presents a very fast paced tale. With action unfolding everywhere, the major players get their key moments. This plays into a slower third act to let the readers recoup. The chapter departs on a big discovery. It only grows the feeling of how high the stakes are. “Event” is the only way to describe this!

Mora and Sánchez bring to life the desperate times of the heroes. The loss of control is shown loudly on the heroes faces. Once Nightwing takes control of the room, the art gives him a proper platform to call his shots. The two page spread elevates his status even more as he addresses the remaining heroes.

It is tough to follow that up, but Mora constructs amazing fight sequences as the conflict hits home. During the melee, the heartfelt wear of actions pour out of Superman. This speaks directly to the audience as he comprehends what Waller has done. Another character has a huge moment built by close up panels. The extreme costs of this conflict shine bright with the art. Readers will no doubt be on the edge of their seats for this one.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

The Trinity Of Evil continue to tighten their hold on the DCU with another amazing chapter. Waid’s writing drives home the personal attack on Superman with a direct bullseye. Mora and Sánchez construct the explosive action in between the high drama. This series is firing on all cylinders and simply defines “must read”.

UNCANNY X-MEN #1 (MARVEL COMICS 2024)

With the Krakoan Era over, fans have been waiting to see what happens now with the Children of The Atom. Hiding on a pop culture high with such hits as "Deadpool and Wolverine" to "X-Men '97", Marvel's favorite mutants are making a push to become the premier franchise in all of comics.

Taking a page out of their 90's playbook, the X-Men have been rolling out a multiple of new titles. Having some of the industry's top creators signifies the commitment Marvel is making to the comic line. With each new title, there is an air of wonder and curiosity surrounding their release. However, one book has be standing out slightly more than others as far as hype goes.

UNCANNY X-MEN #1 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles looks to bring back the flagship title in a most marvelous manner.

Let’s take a closer look at how the X-Men’s latest outing goes.

IN SIMONE WE TRUST! Bringing in the architect behind some of the best team book stories in comics (Secret Six, Birds Of Prey), the X-Men start their new stat quo on a very strong note. With the new "Trinity of X" put in place, the story reminds readers why the X-Men are heroes at the very core.

Once the trio of Rogue, Gambit and Wolverine link up, there is a familiar theme of comradery that defines their dream. Even with unsurmountable odds against them, the writing showcases each member in their role on this team.

One character that stands out head and shoulders above everyone else in this issue is Rogue. Simone writes her in a very grounded manner. While other X-Men blindly grasp for Xavier's dream, Rogue is someone that is trying to define her own version.

This is driven home after an encounter that transcends the world of spandex suits and powers. The events wear heavy on Rogue's soul and heart. It is a powerful moment that is clearly the catalyst for her moving forward. Factor in the surprise ending and readers literally have a blueprint for how the X-Men should be written.

Marquez and Wilson bring out a great deal of emotions in Rogue AND Wolverine throughout the issue. With the subtle read of Logan's eyes, readers can sense his internal anguish. This disappears when their challenge awakens. The threat is gifted multiple full page images. It is fitting as to its' size and power scale. The action sequence play out to fan delight. There is big action, but what makes this story is the more "human" factor featured.

The visit to a children's hospital hits on many levels. The wide spectrum of feeling displayed instantly hit readers. Rogue's stages of acceptance shine as she begins her new era. It is balanced out with a closing image that raises many questions. The art team stepped up to the assignment and presented a version of Xavier's squad you can't help but to root for.

Without question, Marvel's mutant flagship title has returned with a renewed energy fans won't get enough of. Simone pens a superb script filled with heroics and heart. Marquez and Wilson construct exciting moments that reinforce the best elements incorporated in the DNA of the Children of the Atom. The future is bright for the latest incarnation of the Uncanny X-Men.

BENEATH (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

For this entry, Comixology Originals is unleashing a new horror story that is making quite a buzz. Considering the creative team behind it, it’s completely justified. Handling the writing is the showrunner of Netflix’s Daredevil. The co-creator of Jessica Jones is on art duties. Mix their talents together and fans have much to be excited about.

BENEATH by Steven S. DeKnight, Michael Gaydos, Kate Sánchez and Tobin Racicot present a tale of survival through unnatural circumstances.

Let’s take a deeper dive and see what unfolds now.

DeKnight blends in elements of grounded conflicts into the supernatural realm to craft an engaging tale. Deputy Sheriff Jess Delgado comes across as unlikely hope trying to pull off the impossible. With the tense relationship between detainees and guards, Delgado is pushed to her breaking point. The writing reflects the struggles as being equally great to the true horror lying beneath the surface.

This comes to the forefront early with her conflict with Pritcher. As they investigate the border attack, Delgado establishes herself as one not to tolerate any nonsense. From here, the pacing shoots forward building the horrors at hand. DeKnight slow rolls the true threat debut. It allows the audience to sink further into the growing fear.

Once the story arrives at its’ midway point, readers get clarity on what the unlikely group is now facing. The tone of the book splits with its’ conflict. the personalities involved are combustible enough. Add in the real threat and there’s much to balance. DeKnight doesn’t struggle with this. He keeps events leveled right through the final act.

At this stage, there is a fair share of classic horror themes along with a question of who is the true terror. It plays out to a satisfying finish. The closing pages end events as it should: leaving the readers wanting more.

This works to perfection with the art of Gaydos and lettering of Racicot. The panels reflect the seedy nature of human conflict. Pritcher’s demeanor stands out as a character you instantly dislike. It plays off Delgado’s stern, even-keel responses. The conflict between the residents at the detention center comes across as uncomfortable as expected. The reactions and body language shown speaks volumes of what the true horror of this issue was.

As for the supernatural side, the art delivers on crafting imposing evil. The deaths showcased are gruesome and unforgiving. Mixed with the coloring and lettering, they signify how brutal the true evil attacks are. It is not one for the squeamish. There is a bold full page splash bringing that reveal to readers. This is complimented by origin pages that switch the coloring and structure. Readers can appreciate the break from the dark, gritty setting of the book in this moment.

Gaydos and Racicot do a fantastic job of creating the frightening surrounds going into the close. It does feel like it’s directly out of the movies. There is loud action and high drama. Readers will be especially invested in the final pages. With simple lettering, it leaves this tale with a solid landing spot as all great horror stories would.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Combining a supernatural threat with the genuine conflicts of human nature, “Beneath” delivers a story with many layers underneath its surface. DeKnight constructs a chilling environment of lost hope. Gaydos and Racicot orchestrate the haunting images that will keep readers on edge. There’s much for horror fans to enjoy with this saga.

For this issue, Ampadu builds the story off the uneasy trust factor of the two leads. Readers get a quick background on MaryBeth and why she’s so important to rescue. The writing peels back some of the walls Roku set up to give insight on her personal connection. This becomes more clearer when they meet the Jonin.

Once he breaks down Ninjak and Roku, the writing reflects the Jonin as more than one-dimensional. This plays into his manipulation of events. As things progress, the story shifts back to the uneasy working relationship. This builds toward a strong conclusion. The final page will have readers guessing as the world of Colin King gets more complicated than ever.

Giribaldi and Ftuli step in for art duties for this chapter. The Jonin gets a full page panel to introduce himself to readers. This is followed up by his breakdown of the pair. Roku and Ninjak’s reactions sell the action for being a big event.

This helps to sell the final act. Once the pair heads into action, the imagery reflects the personal history between both. It leads to a shocking moment. The full page image captures the brutal turn of events.

With the red coloring popping off the white background, readers can easily comprehend the deadly action taken. The story wraps up with some quieter panels indicating the cold demeanor of the espionage lifestyle.

Colin King’s latest adventure takes a drastic turn with his unlikely partner. Ampadu leans heavy into the fractures of the shaky alliance with the writing. Giribaldi and Ftuli provide solid art to convey the latest obstacles standing in Ninjak and Roku’s way. No one ever said the spy life was gonna be easy. This story proves it.

The story of Annabel is a tragic tale of love and loss. Phillips weaves in elements of the 1960’s incredibly. Everything from the location to the music creates a vibrant backdrop to Annabel’s grasp for affection. Her relationship with Tilly is classic Hollywood. Readers can’t help but be caught up in its nostalgia. It is a stark contrast to where her persona is.

The banter between her and Adira brings forth how far she has fallen. Annabel is cold and remorseless as she grows in power. Phillips keeps readers guessing on where Adira truly lies. However, there is no denying her shock at how far Annabel has gone over the edge. This fear caps off a strong closing to where the next phase of plans lead.

It may sound like a broken record at this point but Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano continue to impress delivering such high quality images. The drive-in diner pops with flare and innocence. Napolitano’s lettering for “Leader Of The Pack” is a perfect compliment to the moment. The panels capture the building love and devastating end for readers to be cemented with.

Once back in present time, the depiction of Annabel comes off as intimidating and shocking. Adira’s reactions amplify the tense panels. The imagery mirror the unhinged behavior of evil incarnate. This all builds for a solid landing spot with Annabel ready to take her swing to end Jessica once and for all.

With its’ mix of horror and hopeful optimism, the latest chapter of Comics coolest series strikes another big win. Phillips unveils a vintage romance behind terror with incredible writing. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano blend the visuals of a classic time with the dire present via their fantastic images. There’s never a question that this series is a lock to hit each time out.

One of the strongest elements of this book is the consistent one-upmanship between the leads. With Preston, his motivations extend further than simple revenge. Emma counters with a well-staged front. Their encounter shows how much Emma has been forced to grow up. The biggest heist Preston orchestrated was stealing Emma’s childhood.

Bendis writes Emma as a confident and determined force. The play made against Preston is one that will catch some of the audience off guard. It works to add more drama to the layered attack at hand. Bendis constructs the build and tear-down extremely fine to maximize its’ impact. The conclusion ties up loose threads very smoothly. It plays strongly into the stages of an evolving character who’s just begun to scratch potential. Fantastic work tart to finish.

Maleev, Herring and Meng craft some impressive visuals for the finale. Two peices that will jump off the page show the range and styles of influence. One is a two page splash that has a computer painted appeal. The other two page splash is a heavy Mod/Steranko inspired feel. They stretch how far Emma’s plan dabble in attacking Preston. Readers will be locked in studying those images.

The breaks in coloring also help shift moods. Preston’s ordeal concludes with a bright glow. Readers will have to cypher what is unfolding. Katie Roots’ range of emotions are another standout point. The parting panels build up towards a strong closing page. In those panels, the art and lettering make a simple yet bold case on where things could possibly lead to next. It has been a huge part of this book’s success and never stalled in its’ run.

Breaking out of her parents’ legacy and forging her own, the story of Emma Lawford concludes on a spectacular note. Bendis, Maleev and the team combine elements of mystery and intrigue to deliver to readers what they’ve been saying all along: a masterpiece.

Brombal sets Jace Boucher up for an emotional last stand. Throughout his journey, Jace has been dealing with ghosts from his past. It has been driving his one constant emotion: Anger. The writing reflects this as he goes into his showdown. However, Boucher finds himself in an unthought of position.

The sub plot of the houses comes to light at an unexpected time. With its venomous dialogue, Jace is told where he fits in the grand scheme of power. This drives him into action. It also builds to a stand still moment that long time fans have wondered if/when they will see it. From here, the story concludes very quickly. Loose ends are tied up very firmly.

The conclusion is not without its’ bittersweet moments. It leaves readers in a unique spot to process events. There is a sense of open-endedness that fans will have to ponder what just transpired. It’s a solid note to conclude on as the Butcher War reached its’ ending.

Fuso and Muerto open the issue with a near full image of Jace assessing what happened to Maven. This leads into his violent march into the House of Boucher. Panels are filled with extreme acts as Boucher look to end matters on his terms. His last run truly begins with a strong two page spread. The spread serves as a great pace setter as business begins to pick up steam.

From here, story pacing gets pages flying fast. It mirrors the ever-changing fight brewing. The art team throws in some graphic panels fitting of a bloody war. In its’ epilogue, the art style switches up to reflect flashbacks. It is a great break needed before the finale. The closing pages built towards a bittersweet ending. Readers will sense the gravity of Jace’s last stand with much praise.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

“The Butcher’s War” concludes on a heartfelt and brutal note. Brombal sets an intense pace with strong writing. Fuso and Muerto give fans a violent and unforgiving final confrontation fitting for its’ build. This story will be one that Slaughterverse fans will be talking about for quite some time.

MacKay pulls out all the stops for an action packed finale. The Avengers last stand comes across as larger than life. It mirrors the stakes at hand. Seeing the rally cry is an easy win for readers. MacKay also mixes in some solid surprises to help the heroes.

That said, one character (literally) steals this issue. Doom’s portrayal pours of the self beliefs he always carries. The banter between him and Dr. Strange leaves readers knowing that a cost was paid that may be too high to overcome. MacKay throws in a predictable but impactful swerve in leading to the conclusion. Once the last page hits, the writing gives one more stunning mic drop moment before it bows out.

Larraz, Gracia and Sifuentes-Sujo provide iconic panels bringing the dire gravity of the event to life. The full page splash of the Avengers flying into action kicks events off in a monster way. The face off with Thor and Varnae/Blade feels of a true battle of titans.

Once Doom and Strange agree to their deal, the near full page unveiling screams excitement. This funnels into the action unfolding. Panels pick up a faster pace with the non-stop chaos taking place. It only slows down when Doom seizes a chance with a vibrant image. Even with a heroic shot of the survivors, happiness is short lived. The closing panel caps off what an anguished call Strange made and its’ upcoming repercussions will have.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

Marvel’s Bloodiest event concludes on a solid yet predictable landing spot. MacKay’s writing centers the big action with an intriguing sub plot. Larraz and the team bring amazing action sequences to life from start to finish. From here, a shift of power will be taking place that opens up many creative doors. Brace for it.

BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER SEASON ONE (AMAZON STUDIOS/PRIME VIDEO)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, DC Comics’ iconic vigilante returns to a familiar realm. From various incarnations with the Justice League to the legendary “Batman: The Animated Series (1992)”, fans have been drawn to the animated escapades of Bruce Wayne. Breaking into this arena has allowed for many creative opportunities. Some have hit. Others have not.

2014 was the last solo Batman series with “Beware The Batman”. Since then, pop culture witnessed his monster return to the big screen with Matt Reeves’ 2022 film, “The Batman”. The back to basics feel won over the fandom. Spawning from that is an upcoming sequel. It also created an opportunity to return to this universe in an animated form.

At a 2021 WarnerMedia event, “BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER” was announced. JJ Abrams (Bad Robot), Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) and Reeves were the three lead exec. producers for the new project. In 2022, the series was picked up by Amazon Studios for Prime Video after Warner Bros. Discovery opted out of the project.

The series is slated to debut its’ first season on August 1st, 2024. Amazon Studios for Prime Video allowed the ODPH podcast early access to the new animated Batman series.

Let’s take a closer look at how this new entry fares. Note : This will be a SPOILER FREE review.

Knowing the trio of powerhouse creators producing, expectations are high. Add in Ed Brubaker, James Tucker, Daniel Pipski, Rachel Rusch Rich
and Sam Register
into the exec. producer mix and it only raises the bar higher. Much to fans’ delight, they don’t miss giving a fresh take to Gotham City’s favorite citizen.

The series carries a vintage feel to its’ surroundings. From the cars to the architecture, it brings the audience back to a simpler time. There will be instant comparisons to Batman: TAS. However, the series quickly breaks away from that correlation with its’ more mature and grounded themes.

The complex dynamic between the Dark Knight and notable amoral characters (and their devious actions) leans heavy into the "real world" aspect of recent storytelling. It is a perfect compliment to Reeves’ movie vision.

“Crusader” delves into the best of Batman’s early years with precision writing and voice acting. Not everything is perfect but the series nails the key points when mattered most.

Hamish Linklater (Batman/Bruce Wayne) delivers a strong performance with his take of the Dark Knight. There is a noticeable aura of an inexperienced Batman throughout the series. This plays well to the audience. It allows them to connect to the brand new landscape and evolving dangers it brings.

Linklater distinguishes Wayne’s calm demeanor with Batman’s gruff persona very well. By the time of the finale, it is very well cemented that Batman is really the hero the city deserves.

The series also dives and re-imagines some of Batman’s greatest rogues to much success. The Penguin (Oswalda Cobbelpot - voiced by Minnie Driver) and Harley Quinn (Harleen Quinzel- Voiced by Jamie Chung) are two magnificent character performances that steal the episodes that they are in.

Both give new creative directions that play up to their well known statuses. I really enjoyed the Quinn take because it comes across as a multi-layered approach that is rarely showcased on this level.

Not everything is all new takes concerning the rouges. Christina Ricci’s Catwoman performance is as classic as it comes. It leaves a lasting impression that holds its’ own with the great company it keeps. The same can be said for Diedrich Bader’s Harvey Dent/Two-Face. With Dent’s evolution from start to the spectacular finale, fans will have much to rave about with the tragic rogue.

The only times the series steps back are when they dabble in the supernatural. While entertaining, the two episodes (“Night Ride” and “Nocturne”) that center around this theme seem to stray too far from the grounded epicenter. They still are quality viewings never the less.

There are also standout performances from Michelle C. Bonilla (Renee Montoya), Krystal Joy Brown (Barbara Gordon) and Jason Watkins (Alfred Pennyworth) stretching into each episode. They reflect the corrupt world of Gotham and the challenge to find its’ redemption.

Two episodes that bring this theme to the forefront are “Moving Target” and “The Night of The Hunters”. The latter, imo, defines what this series is all about: grounded, realistic struggles to fight the good fight. Isn’t that what Batman’s all about?

FINAL POINT: 9.7

The Bat is Back in animation in a big way. “Crusader” presents an innovative version of the Dark Night that fans won’t want to stop watching. With excellent voice acting, the world of Gotham flourishes with new visions. Favorite characters get revived with takes that mesh solidly with images that are sure to please new and seasoned fans alike. This one has all the makings to carve its’ own spot in the Batman mythos for seasons to come.

LOCAL MAN #12 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, we are heading back to Farmington! Jack Xaver’s transition into post heroics isn’t going well. Publicly disgraced. Legally banned from resuming his hero identity. This is the new norm for hero once known as Crossjack.

With more sinister elements at hand, Xaver plays with fire trying to help. The Faceless Horde must be stopped at all costs. The question is will Xaver be able to say the day or crumble to the pressure.

Local Man #12 by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio takes readers into the drama, danger and dueling with a former Vice President? Only in this Eisner nominated book does it work!

Let’s not delay any longer and jump into the chapter!

Xaver continues to be the flawed hero you can’t help but root for. His current situation pushes him to the edge. Fleecs and Seeley challenge Xaver with Igna’s true intentions. Readers watch as he attempts to process the new information. This isn’t met without challenge. The breakout character is Slick 2.0.

With each panel, she steals the moment from Jack. One of this books’ biggest strengths is the humor. The conversation between the three is comedic gold.

Once the story shifts gears, the drama builds at a slow pace. With the personal loss he took, Xaver is shown to be still reeling. The closing act elevates that even higher with key information revealed. Readers won’t be shocked at Xaver’s reaction to the news. Before that can be even processed, just wait for the final page. This series just keeps getting better and better.

The art showcase Xaver’s heavy toll of loss. The opening encounter with Inga and Slick varies with humor and surprise. Suffice to say, there is a LOT going on with the opening act. The reveal of the Horde’s leader is presented with a full page image. This exemplifies who’s behind the mask as a true threat.

Xaver and Inga’s team-up carries a tense feel. Once it transitions to their talk with a “prisoner”, the art accelerates. There’s a few great fighting sequences to set up a main event shot. The two page spread unveils much to the audience (especially with a cameo).

Readers will have much to discuss concerning the final pages. One is the release of Xaver’s pent up emotions. This is given a full page panel to drive home his anger. The ending page leaves readers with some questions before leaving on a high note. The art team delivers another strong issue.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

“F*** Crossjack”! Jack Xaver is dealt with emotional blow after blow in this chapter. Seeley and Fleecs construct the tension with excellent writing. The art mirrors the mounting anger of the fallen hero splendidly. It’s another fantastic read that you simply don’t want to miss.

ABSOLUTE POWER: ORIGINS #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, the architect of DC Comics’ latest event is collecting victory after victory. Metahumans are being depowered. A scared public is being manipulated in her favor. The Trinity of Evil is on the brink of taking absolute control of the DCU. This is all going according to plan for AMANDA WALLER.

“The Wall” has never been shy about her feelings towards super heroes. Waller’s ruthlessness and determination is second to none. With Absolute Power within reach, Readers are about to see how it all began.

ABSOLUTE POWER: ORIGINS #1 by John Ridley, Alitha Martinez, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse and Steve Wands begins to reveal the origin of one of the most feared and dangerous people in the DC Universe.

Ridley constructs a beginning based on loss and revenge. The parallels to Bruce Wayne’s beginnings make an instant connection to the readers. Both are driven by great loss. However, that is where the comparison ends. Waller deals with a system failing her when she needed it the most. Seeing how masked vigilantes receive preferred treatment lights a strong emotional reaction. This fuels her rage and begins her new path of vengeance.

Waller’s long game play works to perfection. It is not without challenges. The strain put on her family is tough and amplifies how committed she is to her goal. Seeing the big picture, Waller finds ways to sway favor in her direction.

The strongest point of this chapter is a conversation between Waller and Marvin Collins (who she’s volunteering on his congress campaign). In this moment, Waller delivers to readers why she is so dangerous. The pieces to a larger puzzle start falling in place. Once the closing page hits, there is no doubt this is only the beginning of something more sinister.

Martinez brings the painful beginnings of Waller’s path by capturing her rage in multiple panels. There is a key reaction to a Jim Gordon statement that is very clear in seeing her transform from sorrow into vengeful. Batman gets a full page image justifying what Waller is envisioning while Collins opponent is talking. Her unfazed reaction to the speech exemplifies how hardened she’s become to anything outside of her goal.

Waller’s conversation with her daughter shows the wear of her actions. Readers see the frustration in her expressions. This becomes short-lived as Waller begins her final play. The cold demeanor plays out perfectly as she accomplishes her first goal. It is complemented by the final page. Waller’s eyes speak more than any word bubble can. One goal down, many more to go.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Amanda Waller’s path to power begins with a strong tale of conviction over grief. Ridley pens a direct and excellent first chapter with the writing. Martinez, Rapmund, Dalhouse and Wands construct the revenge guided visuals showcasing the genesis of arguably the most dangerous person on the DCU Earth. This will be one story you won’t want to miss.

VOID RIVALS #11 (SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT/IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, the Energon Universe odd couple marches forward. Darak and Solila have been an unlikely pairing. Destiny has crossed the two into each others’ path. Some might think that was enough to crush them. No one could have expected members of the Cybertron landscape would raise the stakes even higher.

Coming off last issue’s reveals, all bets are off on where things lead to next. Can the pair survive to fight another day?

VOID RIVALS #11 by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Patricio Delpeche and Rus Wooten (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) looks to deliver another huge win for the ever-popular Energon Universe.

Kirkman presents Springer as a much needed ally to Darak and Solila. With last issue’s big reveals concerning their connection to Energon, it was a matter of time before trouble caught up with them. The pace speeds up to give readers big action moments. Darak winds up stealing the panels with a risky move to sway the conflict their way.

In its’ fallout, Darak takes a huge gamble. It is a risk that screams for high risk/reward. The dialogue starts to break up moments between the dangerous pursuit they’re caught in. The writing intersects with some notable areas. None might be bigger than an introduction of a popular Autobot. How that figure will merge with the story is unknown but will be highly anticipated. The closing act feels slightly familiar as a new situation arises that looks to cause fractures in an already cracked bond between strangers.

De Felici and Delpeche open with excellent action moments. The art reflects the frantic battle at hand. It leads into a show-stealing half panel. In that frame is a risky but desperate move for Darak. The move pays off, resulting in a solid transition to another area.

Readers will be excited to see some classic Transformers faces appear. One will stand out more than others. The art team gives a notable welcome with a half page panel. These leads back to the unlikely trio and a mysterious cliffhanger. The art continues to impress and expand on an ever-growing universe.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

The Energon Universe strikes with a solid display fast-paced action and building drama. Kirkman builds a steady foundation with the writing. De Felici and company craft blockbuster action with more grounded reflections for another hit issue.

For this entry, it is time for a massive(verse) event! Since 2022, the world of Black Market Narrative has created a special event properly titled “SUPER-MASSIVE”. The event brings together members of Comics most exciting line in a one-shot adventure. However, this year, things are very different.

The Radiant Black game-changing event know as “The Catalyst War” has taken center stage. With the War’s conclusion poised for Radiant Black #30 and #30.5 respectively, many fans wondered how the rest of the universe would become involved. Their wait has been answered.

SUPERMASSIVE 2024 by Kyle Higgins, Ryan Parrott, Mat Groom, Melissa Flores, Joe Clark, Stefano Simeone and Becca Carey brings in the Massive-Verse family frotn and center into The Catalyst War!

Juggling the events of the Catalyst War, the writing team doesn’t miss a beat with the adventure at hand. Seeing the dynamics of certain players match up proves for some great moments. Post-SM, readers will need a Rogue Sun-Shift extended team-up. One area which does not get overlooked is when characters “meet” for the first time. This makes for some poignant interactions as events move forward.

Having Shift step into the spotlight levees how uncertain things have become. His role takes the conflict into a dangerous territory. Seeing the conflict play out, the writing presents the big action moments that are accustomed to this line. The resolution plays into the uncertain elements of Catalyst. It leaves readers off on a high note as the Massive-Verse world faces its’ gravest challenge.

Simeone gives readers much to savor with the art. THE AERIAL SCENE! Capital letters is the only proper way to describe the full page insanity on display. This event feels larger than life. It sets a high pace for the rest of the book. Each character gets stand out panels that don’t get lost in the shuffle.

That said, the group shots elevate the story when presented. Once they come across the big “villain”, the catch phrase stand off will have readers amped to see what unfolds from here. Simeone crafts a sense of danger. heroics and tragedy with the big fight. Its’ fallout feels bittersweet as it sinks in what lies ahead. The closing image caps off what readers are expecting from the start: A Supermassive event that delivers. Mission accomplished.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

With the Catalyst War unfolding, the Massive-Verse pillars enter the fray with an excellent adventure fitting of the title. Superb writing balances the personalities and pending fate magnificently. Simeone and Carey envision the electric feel of the devasting conflict with amazing artwork. If there is ever a question of why this IS Comics’ most exciting line, this story will silence critics quickly.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the Massive-verse’s biggest mystery has arrived at its’ concluding chapter. Pittsburgh has been a city on the edge. The “Accountability Killer” saga has vice gripped the Steel city residents. Rising Body Counts. Political manipulation. Secrets exposed. These actions have been building to a breaking point.

Led by the “Who Is No One” podcast, the series has transcended traditional storytelling. This is nothing new for Kyle Higgins and the Black Market Narrative team. From QR codes, voting on who takes the Radiant Black mantle and more, they find ways to re-invent the creative wheel.

That said, the bar has been set very high for this series finale. Will readers finally get the answer to the lingering question: Who Is No/One?

At its’ core, “No/One” has unveiled many elements of truth and perception. The finale wastes little time ramping up the broken vision of Aaron Kern. Higgins and Buccellato delve into his madness flawlessly. The “Accountability Killer” comes across unhinged and egotistical. It plays into the deadly showdown he orchestrated. With every action tormenting his hostages, readers can’t help but become further invested. The vicious demeanor portrayed by arguably The Massive-verse’s best villain steals this chapter.

Just as readers sense they know what’s going on, Higgins and Buccellato prove they have more tricks up their sleeves. A major player finally crashes the scene and the pace rapidly moves. This builds towards a strong conclusion and greater fallout. With a series based on mystery and truths, the residents of Pittsburgh expose their range of feelings. Their mood is best defined by a quote: “How are any of us supposed to move on?” Powerful words to illustrate the hold Kern’s actions had on the city.

Even with this payoff, readers are treated to two well-placed moments before closing the chapter. As the theories start forming, Higgins and Buccellato give one last salvo of questions for the audience. With all the moving parts, this story couldn’t have been structured any better.

Since this series’ beginning, Borges and Englert have balanced the high tension landscape of Kern’s manipulations with brilliant action imagery. Rest assured, there was no falter for this ending. The final showdown is presented with a dire, intense half page panel. Julia Paige’s terrified reaction reflects the readers witnessing events.

Kern’s mayhem is enhanced with the disturbing actions he flaunts on his prisoners. The lettering of Otsmane-Elhaou takes these difficult moments to new levels. It leaves a new sense of wonder for the future of Pittsburgh and its’ residents. The art team set an extremely high bar that is nothing but wins for the readers.

The charismatic mastermind has been pulling strings in the shadows for quite some time. His latest challengers are a ruthless pair known as Xamot and Tomax. Pop culture knows them as the Crimson Twins.

Last chapter, they crossed Destro’s path in a power-play move. Heading into the fallout, all bets are off as what the metal faced maestro has in store now.

Watters gives readers a true “spy vs. spy” feel to the story. The pacing splits events between the rivals. Each highlights what they’re guessing their opposition is thinking. The game of one-upmanship showcases how vicious the quest for power can be.

This all builds towards a somewhat startling conclusions. let it be said, there is always some honor amongst thieves. Destro comes off as cunning as ever with the writing. Even as skilled challengers as the twins are, it never feels like Destro is out of his element. The final act throws a detour in where events play next. It is one that leaves readers guessing to whom still has the upper hand.

Bressan and Lucas breakdown the back and forth banter with a few notable panels. The “face-Off” homage conveys the rift between sides. This leads into some fun action panels. A full page image of the B.A.T.S vs Crimson Guard will have readers excited for what’s unfolding.

The showdown is filled with a tense overtone. Destro lets his guard drop a bit to indicate to readers the rage and anger he is under while handling this current challenge. With a final page setting a new stage, the chapter takes a bow with many guess on where things lead from here.

FINAL POINT: 8.2

A battle floods over from the board room to the battlefield with this latest Energon Universe chapter. Watters lines up the major pieces for a combustible situation with the writing. Bressan, Lucas and Wooten deliver on action with many moving parts still rolling. Where this goes from here will be a victory for readers never the less.

With each side trying to make an impact, Hama divdes up the pace to let each party have a few moments to shine. The opening delves into the Joes infiltrating Serpentor’s twisted world. It gives readers a solid build before the combat begins. At this stage, Serpentor unleashes his first salvo to much fanfare.

On the flip side, the Joes begin their two-sided attack. The writing takes hold of the losses Dawn has been dealt as she’s not front and center of plans. This gives more pay-off to the evil ways of Commander’s plans. With the latter portion of the book, things begin to speed up. This creates an exciting feel heading into the close. Once at the final page, there is no doubt in reader’s minds as War has been officially declared in the G.I. Joe universe.

Pelletier and company construct the beginnings of an all-out assault. The team on Cobra Island never ease up from the brutal situation they’re in. Panels leave nothing to chance as the Joes make their presence felt.

The art also hones in on the direct attack on Springfield. Seeing the Serpentor squad jump into bad leaps at reader. Seeing the shock and doubt in their eyes becomes telling in the closing pages. This plays a part in the ending image. Knowing who has now entered the battle, readers can expect more chaos and damage as the next issue is unlikely to let up what was started here.

FINAL POINT: 8

Serpentor’s plans begin with a G.I. Joe team looking to intercept. Hama paints a brutal and direct look at the mayhem about to start. Pelletier and the team craft solid combat panels in with the onlook of combat waiting in the wings. This has all the makings for another classic G.I. Joe event.
