For this entry, we are checking out a new series from Stout Club Entertainment via Comixology Originals. If the name of Stout Club sounds familiar, they are the group created by Rafael Albuquerque, Eduardo Medeiros, Mateus Santolouco, and Rafael Scavone. Under the banner, fans have been treated to such hits as Hailstone, Funny Creek and the incredible Red Tag.

The brand looks to make another huge run in 2024. First out of the gate is a mysterious world of fantasy and intrigue.

The story begins in a frozen landscape. Inside a mountain hides a secret colony. The inhabitants are rationing water. Soldiers of the Tyr house are clashing with the Dagur representatives over the amount of water being given. Tensions run very high as both sides don’t back down.

Fighting ensues. The young residents watch in awe. Some don’t agree with the method of “conversation”. Once Loder throws his apple at one of the Tyr, emotions run even higher. It is only interrupted when the Mistress of the King grabs the kids for a history lesson.

Readers watch as the story of Erik the last Explorer. the story breaks down the Mistland and some of its’ secrets. From here, the story picks its pace up as time moves forward. Just when the story looks to head in one direction, the closing image throws everything off. Brace for a mystery that looks to uncover more than just a suspect.

Castilho juggles with many characters in this opening charge. The inhabitants of the Mistland range in many different emotions. Fighting for control establishes the power struggle. As the different groups begin to emerge, readers have to start cyphering where the motivations come from. This mirrors the themes one would see in a “Game Of Thrones” esque story. This is a big win for readers as the true intentions remain hidden for now. Judging by the final page, there will be much to dive into this new world more than the shocking conclusion.

Watanabe, Marques and Manes combine many elements to craft the world of the Mistland. With the rivaling parties, their conflicts sets the tone for the book. The story of Erik The Last explorer gets a full page guide walking the readers through his journey. The final trek of the chapter depicts the many residents of the land in more peaceful times. It is a stark contrast to the final image, which will have fans guessing until the next chapter drops.

FINAL POINT: 8.1

Through the wonderment of a fantasy land lies a dark secret. Castilho’s writing walks readers into the tensions of the new landscape. The imagery of Watanabe and Marques depicts elements brewing that hits a new gear when the last page debuts. This will be a book you’ll want to keep an eye out for on NCBD.

THE PENGUIN #9 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of parlay points!

For this entry, we are heading into the closing chapters of Oswald Cobblepot’s return to Gotham. It was recently announced that the DC Comics series will be concluding at issue #12. Until then, the Gotham Underworld has been put on notice. The Penguin is back and business is about to pick up.

The Penguin #9 by Tom King, Rafael De Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo and Clayton Cowles dives into the family drama of the Cobblepots.

Let's take a closer look at how the family reunion goes over.

This chapter begins with two thugs setting a bomb. As they work away, the narration eludes to someone overseeing the bigger picture. The bomb explodes. The building was the Martha Wayne day Care Center. The voice: Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin.

The story shifts to a rooftop. Batman is shaking down Cobblepot for information. With twelve bombings happing in his city, Batman isn’t letting this slide. An ultimatum is given. Cobblepot obliges. Two names are given. They are Aiden* and Addison Cobblepot!

Readers watch as the Penguin needs to find a way to stay off Batman’s radar to handle his children personally. Plus, what does Lisa St. Claire have up her sleeve? If that last name sounds familiar to Bat fans, it should.

With the drama unfolding, the closing moments throw everything into flux. A new player is brought into the story. Their effect on Oswalt speaks volumes as the final page concludes events with a loud statement.

King leans heavily into the family dynamic of the Penguin and his children. The writing is fearless as Oswalt doesn't hesitate to assert himself into his drama while showing other sides of his characters. the standout player in this issue is Lisa St. Claire. With no pause, her scheming jumps out to readers amongst others. Seeing Batman frustrated with the case events in another big moment. This builds up to a strong final act that is sure to have a huge payout next issue.

De latorre and Maiolo keep the grittiness of Gotham front and center while the drama builds. The rooftop images of Batman and Penguin keep the intensity growing. It leads to a full page panel that sets the tone for the remainder of the book.

Batman’s time in the book felt impactful with each panel. His reactions to Cobblepot’s case carried heavy weight. The moments with Bats and Commissioner Gordon show the ware the Penguin’s family actions are taking. It leads to an excellent shot of Batman heading right into the belly of the beast: the Iceberg Lounge. With images like this, the conclusion will be one fans won’t forget anytime soon.

FINAL POINT: 8.2

It’s a family affair as The Penguin attempts to reclaim his throne. King sets the stage for an explosive confrontation with the writing. De Latorre, Maiolo and Cowles provide the brooding backdrop to the big throwdown. Fans won’t want to miss how this all plays out.

The story begins with the immediate fallout of Jo losing his arm to the Shroud. The mood is reflective at how dangerous Jo walked towards being killed. Witht he shroud leaving a facial scar, Jo’s friends see him in the hospital. One friend who comes bearing gifts is Charlie.

Charlie bears the guilt of causing Jo’s injury. A metal arm lies beneath the wrapping paper. Jo is happily surprised to see it. Charlie hopes this can lead to some forgiveness. It leads to an impromptu kiss which Jo isn’t ready for. Charlie leaves before he can react.

The story shifts back to the cold reality of the new world. Jo and friends are locked away in a crystal jail. Rowan has set them up for his own devious plan.

What does Rowan have in mind with Jo and company? Readers find out there is much more that just Jo’s journey at hand. A showdown is set in motion that could change the course of everything.

The pace fires on all cylinders as the action unfolds. During the chaos, who will be left standing? With the closing pages, a new course is set for when readers head back into the abyss of the Shroud.

What a mic dropping ending. Scott and Jack Snyder drive the emotional points right through to the conclusion. Jo’s backstory connects with readers about the uncertainty of the new world. It’s a perfect set-up for their present struggle. The reveal of Rowan opens up many possibilities to where things can head next. The direction that the story leans into is an excellent build for the feverish last act.

With the climactic ending, there are many moving elements at hand. The writing manages to close in on Jo, who steals the spotlight with his actions. The fallout presents an intriguing new course of action. Once the final page hits, readers will want to dive right back as the next course will set things in a new avenue to follow along with. Amazing work on display with the finale.

Favoccia and Cogar give readers many huge images to rave about. The emotional innocence of youth is shown in the opening segments. It gives a happier timeframe before the darker times of the present. Rowan’s reveal is crafted with a full page split of panels featuring the major player involved.

This is complimented with a full page displaying the showdown of Rowan and Charon. There’s no way readers see this and not get excited for what follows. From here, the action doesn’t stop as events keep escalating to a grand finale. The fallout leaves readers for now with an image that leaves no doubt the saga is far from over.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

With Rowan’s plans revealed, Jo and his friends have to find a way to survive in a thrilling arc conclusion. The fantastic writing of Scott and Jack Snyder takes readers on a rollercoaster of events. Favoccia layers the chapter with superb imagery that elevates the saga to new levels. By A Thread is a series that readers simply can’t afford to miss.

In two issues, Phillips has crafted an intense world of espionage. The pacing moves things right along while keeping readers locked in. The back and forth of Clint and Natasha breaks up the seriousness of actions nicely. The dynamic of Natasha's symbiote is a new factor that leads to some memorable sequences. It keeps building up suspense of what its' true motives are. Does it support the pair's friendship or does it want to eliminate Clint altogether?

The latter portion of the chapter dives very far back into their past. Seeing their bond form and still hold up to the present is a big win for fans. It also adds more danger to the actions and fallout that jeopardizes everything. Factor in some more surprises in the final moments and this series just keeps getting better and better.

The art reflects Clint and Natasha's solid foundation of their friendship. The slower moments in Madripoor give insight to their casual comfortability discussing events. This all changes with one quiet action. The near full page image speaks volumes. This leads to a wonderful full page full spread of Natasha in action. The fighting panels flow very smoothly until the resolution connects.

In these instances, the art locks in on Natasha's reactions and how she tries keeping things level until she gets a reaction. This leads into the final moments where a reveal is gifted with a full page foreshadowing. Once this portion revs up, it motors until the closing image. A full reveal of a character is constructed. This leaves readers much to ponder until the next chapter drops.

FINAL POINT: 8.7

Within two issues, the latest chapter in the lives of Clint Barton and Natasha Rominov spiral out of control. Led by Phillips superb writing, the action moves without remorse as the drama unfolds. The art team deliver on creating a world of danger amongst an emotional bond. You absolutely want to have this series on your radar.

With Krakoa near mortally wounded from an Orchis attack, back-up has arrived in the form of APOCALYPSE! The powerhouse begins to lay waste to the Stark Sentinels. Apocalypse begins to talk of how the Mutant leaders failed Krakoa. He vows not to let him die and sacrifices some blood to try reviving him.

Meanwhile, Nimrod leaves Cyclops for dead as Sentinel City is initiated. Luckily, Magik teleports in to save Cyclops from an explosion. Nimrod appears to have the upper hand on victory. All appears to be going in the Machine’s favor until a surprise figure crashes the party.

Charles Xavier arrives with a deal. Readers watch as it appears Xavier is willing to make a deal with the robotic devil himself. What is the fallout of this move? It seems as the X-Men’s hand is forced with their lives hanging in the balance. Where does Apocalypse factor in plans now?

As the battle heats up, another mutant has entered the match. Readers will be bracing for impact after the final image concludes. Get ready for an explosive conclusion forthcoming.

Duggan gives a big majority of the issue to spotlighting Apocalypse. Introducing this wild-card into the mix presents a fresh look at how events are unfolding. The writing of his reaction to Krakoa speaks volumes for the stakes at hand. It sets up for a big pay-off in the upcoming conclusion.

The deal with Xavier is a moment fans will have plenty of reactions to. Knowing where he is connected with the fall of Krakoa, seeing the dangerous play fits in with his guilted behavior. The fallout is immense. It sets forth the closing chapter of Krakoa with a very storng lead.

The art duties are split between Werneck and Morales for this chapter. Apocalypse greets fans with a bold full page panel introduction. Each following panel showcases the sheer brutality he brings in combat. Seeing the anger build with trying to save Krakoa helps connect with readers unsure of his true play.

Xavier and Cyclops have a moment to process actions that will grab attention. Seeing Xavier trying to rationalize things is a contrast to Cyclops’ anger. This rolls into the X-Men into action. There’s a great full page action image that sets the tone for the conclusion. As impressive as that is, the final full page panel puts an exclamation point on where things head from here.

Apocalypse takes center stage as the end of the Krakoan Era draws closer. Duggan’s writing sets a high bar with emotion and action. The art team gives fans plenty to enjoy with superb images leading into the X-Men’s last stand.

The chapter begins with the Commander begin led to an underground chamber by Ripper. Lying inside is a very relieved doctor. He thinks the Commander has come to save him. Little does he know what’s happening above the ground.

The Nemesis Enforcer of Cobra-La is laying waste to the Dreadnoks. Zandar and Zarana are hiding and planning a counter attack. They push Buzzer out in the open to be a distraction. The enforcer swoops in and breaks Buzzer’s arm. Zarana doesn’t take a killshot attempt. This forces the remaining Dreadnoks to flee for safety. The enforcer lets them flee as the mission is below the surface.

Once the Commander emerges, he divulges his findings and plans what’s next. However, there appears to be a change in plans.

Readers watch as true plans are revealed. It escalates business as the Commander shows why he is a ruthless figure to oppose. The ending act brings events to a crashing halt. It leads the audience to see another player is entering the fold. How will the ultimate power play end?

With Ultimate power at stake, is there anything off limits? Williamson lights the match for a very combustible situation. Seeing the work over the scientist is vintage Cobra Commander. The lying and deceit is justified in his mind. This folds into the conflict of this chapter. The Commander knows what’s at stake and plans for the unexpected.

The action levels up as readers see why the scientist is so dangerous. The writing portrays Commander as an underestimated foe time in and time out. The closing moments throw everything in flux as someone is looming in the distance that will change things forever in the rise of evil.

Milana and Leoni deliver on big action involving the Enforcer. The half page panel of Buzzer’s arm being broken is an intense moment. Wooten’s lettering amplifies the violent outcome. This counters the reveals of what the Commander has been searching for.

The mannerisms displayed indicate the wonderment of knowing what power lies await. This is quickly derailed with a strong panel showcasing a standoff. With a new fight brewing, the action panels grab readers attention. This ends with an incredible full page image dealing the final blow. Fans are gifted a great parting shot leading to a showdown long overdue. There is much to enjoy with this chapter.

With power within his reach, Cobra Commander is dealt a surprising roadblock in this latest issue. Williamson’s writing brings out the best (and most evil) of the lead character. Milana and Leoni deliver on thunderous action sequences while building the foundation to a can’t miss finale.

The chapter begins at Warriors Bar in Coast City. Patrons are running in a panic. The reason? A “Main Man” has come in looking for a beverage or two. Readers see DC’s most famous Czarnain sitting at the bar: LOBO!

Stuck on Earth, Lobo is making the most of his time. While having his drink, Superman crashes the scene. A fight ensues as would be expected between these two. However, Superman is in no mood for games. He wants answers to where Brainiac is.

Meanwhile on Brainiac Prime’s ship, Livewire is getting experimented on. The same goes for Parasite. Supergirl doesn’t back down from her cell from letting Brainiac know what’s coming. The threat is brushed off. All the while, Brainiac Prime seems to malfunction.

Readers see the villain weakened. The captives watch and break down what is going on. None more have a bigger interest in events than Lex Luthor. Mercy Graves (Luthor’s longtime assistant) begins to question Luthor about what is going on.

What is Lex’s secret with Brainiac? Can Lobo and Superman co-exist long enough to defeat the odds? The story spotlights the unlikely pair as they make their way towards his ship. The pace picks up with a welcoming committee greeting the pair. This continues until the closing moments.

While the action is happening, a deal is struck that changes everything. Just wait for the final page as the story takes a unique turn into its’ next stop.

SUPERMAN #13 by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS) Cover: Lee Bermejo

Williamson gives fans a fun read with the dysfunctional duo fighting the good fight. Lobo and Superman have had quite the history. The writing plays into the difference of styles to exemplify Superman’s rage over Brainiac. Lobo’s dialogue mirrors the readers reaction to Supes’ edge in the fighting.

The dynamic surrounding Luthor plays a huge role in this issue. Seeing how the previous issues have set the stage, its’ a solid pay-off. Brainiac comes across as cold and emotionless as ever. This causes Lex to act very erratic. This is a contrast to most Lex encounters. The change elevates the closing act. Once a proposition is made, the book shifts gears. This leads to a great close for readers to ponder until next time.

Sandoval and Sánchez give Lobo a great debut with an excellent full page panel. This is followed up with another great image of Superman taking down Lobo, looking for answers. The rage in Superman’s face speaks volumes to readers.

Brainiac and Luthor’s talk carries tension with the featured panels. Seeing the two meeting about the situation at hand goes to another level towards the close. This leaves readers with a lasting closing full page image until the story ramps up again.

FINAL POINT: 8.3

“The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend” never had Superman and Lobo in mind? With Williamson guiding the pair into danger, the “House Of Brainiac” delivers fans a strong chapter to follow. Sandoval, Sánchez and Maher construct big action sequences with a shocking proposition lingering in the background. Just wait for the final page to turn everything upside down until next time.

As he goes to his car, readers quickly sees it’s been vandalized and robbed. Suddenly, the wrestler is struck down with a barbed-wire baseball bat. Wielding it is someone claiming to be a ghost.

The story jumps to the past. A packed arena is at a fever pitch. Working a merch table is Ramonita "Mona" Castro. Standing in the ring is "King" Castro. Castro is announcing the KCPW World Champion: REY CASTRO!

Post match, it’s revealed Rey is on the verge of getting a major federation contract. With one more match left, The tensions are raised in KCPW.

What happens next spirals the story into a completely new direction. Readers see a moment that turns everything on its axis. The closing moments ties everything back leaving fans with a question that will haunt them until the next chapter. Get ready as this saga has a few more falls to go before declaring a finish.

McCormack sets the early stages of a mystery that shows no holds barred. The dynamic of the Castro family is complex at its’ core. Mona and Rey’s bond is a connecting point to the audience. It carries the story into the latter portion of the book to its shocking ending.

As someone who’s been around the behind the scenes of an indie fed, the writing captures the good and bad reality. It gives more weight to the deeper mystery at the core of this drama. After dealing with the Shadow King, Storm and Magneto have returned to the land of the living. It’s not a moment too soon as Orchis makes their big play to eliminate Mutantkind.

The chapter starts off with Magneto crashing an Orchis base. Soldiers are firing but Magneto pushes forward. These troops are easily outmatched for what they’re dealing with. Magneto’s only question is to revert back to his deadly past or be a changed man and show mercy.

With a looming stand-off, Magneto is forced to make a choice. Trapped mutants are behind closed doors. One false move will set off nerve gas killing them all. What choice can he make? Sacrifice himself to save others? Defiantly standup to the surrounding guards?

Readers watch as a choice is made. There is little doubt of what the outcome is. This becomes the least of Magneto’s worries as the challenge waiting after this proves to be a deadlier threat than expected.

The closing act is filled with big action. It’s fitting for the grand return of Mutankind’s loyal defender. Once the closing pages unfold, there is no question that a new player has entered the fight, wherever humanity and Orchis is ready or not.

Ewing shows Magneto’s struggles to find his identity after his return. Can he go back to his old ways or has his experiences humbled him? It is a great conflict that carries through the chapter. With every action, readers see the different sides come out.

Once the big threat of the issue arrives, Magento is forced to conquer his demons to finish the obstacle. Knowing that the world he has returned to is vastly different, the writing gives the impression of elf-awareness with the world watching. This can only add more intrigue going into the final moments of Krokoan time.

Vecchio, Curiel and Aburtov give a stoic return for Magento in many visuals for this chapter. The opening full page panel sets the tone for the rest of the book. Readers get a before and after with the surrounding soldiers that leaves no question of the brutality of wronging Magento.

Emotions run high as the final battle begins. The art team unleashed Magneto’s rage for this fight with a strong full page visual. Even with the full parting page, the art team leaves readers knowing that Magneto is back without question.

The issue begins in an abandoned amusement park. A young boy stands underneath a carousel. His name is Sunny Boucher. Sunny was under the care of Jace Boucher. That was the case until he was recruited into the House of Boucher by Jolie Boucher. Voices fill the air eluding to Sunny being in trouble.

The story shifts to Sunny being back at the House with Jolie. Jolie mentions how the Order from Chicago is here to take care of Jace. She sets up Sunny to trick Jace into walking into a trap.

Will Jace take the bait? Readers watch as the young boy is influenced to be the decoy to an onslaught. The rival House of Slaughter has some reservations about trusting Sunny. However, it appears that the plan might be falling into place.

Brace for a final act that changes everything. The closing image will have fans on edge knowing the Butcher’s final stand is in full swing.

Sunny Boucher’s story shifts dynamics as the driver for this chapter. The writing portrays him as a child looking for direction. The dynamic with Jolie wavers from loyal to uncertain. If not for her blind confidence, Jolie would see Sunny’s swaying opinions. This builds for a strong pay-off later.

The final act will hit longtime readers more than ones who jump in on the new arc. Knowing the back story between Jace and Sunny, it is an emotional moment that leads into a stronger one unfolding. The set-up for the final page works to carry the tension right to the next chapter.

The art doesn’t steer away of the pull on Sunny. The opening image of Sunny standing by the carousel sets an eerie tone. With the word bubbles surrounding him, the fear starts creeping in the young boy. The series of panels with Jolie “recruiting” Sunny leads readers through her delusional methods. This builds towards a solid middle act and striking final page.

The last stand of Jace Boucher speeds forward with a solid chapter. The writing shows the confliction in a character who’s still finding their way. The art gives readers a sense of the emotional toll being taken. Mix them together and you have an issue worth checking out at the Comic Shops this week.

The issue begins with a flashback to Cybertron. An Autobot unit leads an assault onto a holding area. The Decepticons are onto their attack. It turns into a losing effort as the onslaught pours down on the team. Elita sneaks into the building. What she finds is a literal shell of someone she used to know.

The events shift to Earth. A battleship (USS Henry Harrison) is summoned to investigate “Robots” on the coast of Washington. Readers quickly find out that who they’re looking for might not be so welcoming.

The remaining Decepticons from the battle with Optimus Prime’s forces have a meeting about their future. Soundwave calls for Starscream to step down as leader. This doesn’t go well with the ineffective leader of the group. Under Decepticon law, this action is needed to be handled via trail by combat.

Readers sit back and watch as Soundwave and Starscream battle for the crown. It is a vicious battle with a startling outcome. Once the smoke clears, Autobots need to brace for what is coming. Can they overcome another fight while still recovering? They may not have another option. The closing moments dictate there is no rest for the wicked. A decree is thrown down that will ignite a fanbase to another incredible story.

Johnson doesn’t brake from the fast pacing of the series with its’ latest chapter. The trial for Decepticon control features Soundwave in an unlikely role. Always being Megatron’s loyal right hand, Johnson brings Soundwave’s unwavering allegiance to their mission to the forefront. Readers see a glimpse of the levels he goes to achieve success. The fallout sets course for a new sense of urgency. This plays well to the leader’s counterpart - Optimus Prime.

Prime gives readers a sense of the toll the previous arc has taken on the Autobot leader. The writing reflects Prime’s shaken attitude but unbreakable will. What effects this will have long term is unknown. In the short time, readers are gifted a very well-balanced introduction chapter.

Corona steps into the art role ad doubles down on the big action. The fighting between StarScream and Soundwave is brutal and unforgiving. Each panel screams of the intense action portrayed. Even when Soundwave fights unfair, the art shows there is no limits he won’t go to win. This leads into a half page panel that announces to the readers who is the one left standing in Decepticon rule.

The autobots get their fair share of page time as well. In the Cybertron period, readers see a near full page visual of who lies in captivity. This is fast forwarded to Prime reliving the previous issue events. The closing images show Prime returning to focus with a near full page panel. All in all, the winning formula of drama and action continues to stay balanced for the readers.

“If you aim for the crown, you had best not miss” is a perfect way to sum up Decepticon mentality in this latest issue. Johnson’s writing leans heavy into the big battles readers know and love. Corona steps in for art duties and gifts fans with the winning formula this series has been known for. Its’ conclusion lays down a proclamation that might not be able to be kept, but only time will tell that story.

While in pursuit of Man-Bat, The dynamic duo has some company crash their investigation. Flatline, who has a history with Damian Wayne has arrived in Gotham. Her mission is to find her missing sister Mila. Batman gives the go ahead for Damian to help her.

In his absence, an unlikely figure enters the equation. Shush has been helping Man-Bat on his latest caper. It appears as she’s changed sides. She approaches Batman with an offer he might not be able to turn down.

This issue begins with a flashback of Mila telling her story. Readers find out that she’s not exactly lost. Mila has taken up the family business of crime. This doesn’t sit well with Robin. However, Flatline proves “blood is thicker than water.” Flatline sets up the distraction allowing Mila to escape.

Meanwhile, Batman is listening to Shush’s pitch for teaming up. The only question is that of trust. Can Batman really side with someone who’s identity reflects a dangerous rogue. Shush gives slight insight as she leads Batman into a possible break in the case. After they arrive, it seems as their luck may have run out.

How does events play for both heroes? Being split away, each has their own troubles to deal with. The action doesn’t break from its standard as conflicts arise. Once the fallout begins, it leaves one hero with an unlikely partner to pick up the pieces of the case.

Williamson breaks the issue into two very separate tales. The Flatline story gives fans a showcase into Damian that we rarely see. The emotional reactions to Flatline’s actions jump out. Seeing the usual focused Robin acting a tad reckless was a solid twist. Heading into the close, it will be a fun dynamic to see where things go for Damian form here.

As for Bats, its’ business as usual. Shush is written as a character of mystery. She doesn’t stray too far off the path. Seeing her drama play out with Man-Bat kept readers waiting to see her true motives. The ending is a bit of a surprise that will only have fans talking until the next chapter.

Čižmešija and Lokus step in for art duties with this issue. The opening moment with Batman and Shush is given a near two full page spread. It gives the moment weight as the sensing of motives play out. The same can be said for the Man-Bat appearances. The panels express the villain’s rage with Batman closing in.

The Robin/Flatline saga is gifted strong action panels. One scenario is with Robin and his mobile. The pace rushes through the art as the conclusion is sudden. It leads into more personal moments later heading towards the closing pages. The parting shot sets up a shift in events that will be ones fans will want to keep an eye on.

With the appearance of Flatline, the dynamic duo is split from their case. Williamson mixes in big drama with exciting moments to move events along. Čižmešija, Lokus and Wands give both stories their own distinct looks with distinct images showcasing both leads. The conclusion will be one that leaves doors open to for readers to draw their own clues to where things head from here. Keep an eye out for this one on NCBD.

Zertonia has not been too kind to Darak and Solila. The unlikely pair are on the run. Premier Zalilak is willing to cross a line to stop them from uniting the colonies. Zalilak has unleashed Proximus to eliminate the pair.

This chapter begins with a flashback to a young Solila. She’s preparing her brother Polada for combat. With youthful emotions, Polada struggles with what’s coming. An impromptu fight breaks out between the both. Suddenly time jumps to the present.

Solila stands out in a gaze. Darak asks what’s going on. Solila brushes it off, claiming there’s no way Zalilak would dare send the person she was thinking of.

As the pair moves forward, Proximus speeds in pursuit. The duo stops to rest thinking that a possible destination could be in reach. This is until Proximus makes a bold entrance to detour their path.

With a fight to the death looming, has luck finally run out? Readers watch as the action picks up. Its resolution leaves a notable impact. None will be greater as the final page. The parting image indicates plans may have gravely changed from the original course.

Proximus makes a grand entrance for this chapter via Kirkman’s plot. The mysterious hunter comes across as a driven, merciless soul. This is in stark contrast to the more light-hearted Darak. Solila remains the standout character in this series with her insight and reactions to their threat.

The flashback sequences elude to more as the issue goes forward. It only amplifies the outcome of the encounter between the three. Kirkman lays into the battle in the latter portion of the chapter. This is an easy win with readers as the moment carries a certain feel to the fight. The fallout changes up the original path which is another bonus of an already engaging saga.

De Felici and company make a splash with introducing Proximus with a near full one-page panel. This is followed up by an excellent two-page spread of Proximus making the first strike. Wooden’s lettering amplifies the attack tenfold.

Once the dust settles there, De Felici and Delpeche give readers some great fighting panels. Even to the moments of a helmet slowly breaking, the art team leaves nothing to chance with this encounter. The final page is a full page vision that will be haunting some readers until the next chapter drops. It’s a perfect mic drop moment with big indications.

Making an instant impact, Proximus enters the Void Rivals saga with an action packed debut. Kirkman sets the stage with thrilling writing. The art carries the heavyweight fight feel with every action image. With a show-stopping final page, this will be a book fans will be buzzing about.

GRIM #16 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! Studios)

After being betrayed by her aunt Adira, Jessica and her friends Eddie and Marcel have been tested to extreme measures. The tables turned quickly as Annabel used Adira’s bribe for a returned soul to unleash pure Sin! Now, Jessica and her remaining allies have bunkered down inside a diner as Annabel runs wild.

This chapter begins with a flashback sequence in 2003 Afghanistan. A young soldier is inside a building with another wounded known as Monroe aka “Roe.” The narration walks readers through the mindset of the lead soldier. As he helps up his wounded partner, a head shot kills Roe instantly.

The soldier processes what has just happened. Taking heavy fire, the narration shifts to the soldier fearing the end is near. Suddenly another voice jumps in and asks an awkward question. The time snaps back to present. Eddie is the guilty party for interrupting the narrator.

The mystery voice behind the flashback is none other than the Priest, whos’ story takes center stage. With Jessica gearing up to lead a fight, the Priest’s story of life and loss ignites a deeply moving tale. Readers will become locked in as events play out. Once the final pages unfold, the conclusion hits heavy with the inevitable about ready to commence.

Phillips pens an intense chapter filled with deeply emotional moments. The Priest’s story is filled with the deadly side of war. The phrase “War Is Hell” is never an understatement. Phillips weaves readers through the many phases of the Priest’s time in combat.

It carries a heavy weight as the moments build towards a crushing conclusion. The impact it has on Jessica is very evident. Knowing what lies ahead, even someone who’s been surrounded by death can still be affected by the life of a living being. This chapter gives a moving start to an already layers saga.

Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano depict the hellish landscape of war with very bold imagery. The full page image of Roe’s death holds nothing back. The Priest’s reactions to events wear heavy with his facial responses. The ending of the flashback moments will hit readers very hard in their feelings. Even in the present, the art team closes events with a solid parting image, bracing for what lies ahead. Each creative member wastes no time in giving fans a return they won’t soon forget.

Comics’ coolest book crashes New Comic Book Day with a powerful venture. Phillips’ strong writing lays the groundwork for a powerful chapter. The extreme landscape comes to life with the talents of Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano crafting the dark imagery of the Priest’s past. This chapter is prime example of why Grim gets so much praise in its’ storytelling.

Welcome to a special edition of Parlay Points. It’s the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

In a short amount of time, an upstart company has taken the comic book and pop culture world by storm. With a roster of creators that reads like an all-star team, fans have been dialed in on every move. From New York Comic Con in 2023 to their giant sized debut one-shot in January 2024, the buzz has been undeniable.

The company is GHOST MACHINE

In a bold and daring move, Ghost Machine is unleashing their first wave of books all on the same day ("Ghost Machine Day" - April 3rd, 2024).

Along with Rook:Exodus (art by Jason Fabok) and Redcoat (art by Bryan Hitch), a character that first debuted in 2021 returns in an ongoing series with its' original creative team back for the ride.

GEIGER #1 by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson and Rob Leigh (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS) blazes its' path into the unnamed universe.

Let’s not wait another moment and check this issue out!

Johns hits the ground running right where the one-shot left off. Tariq Geiger is a conflicted soul. Finding purpose after losing his family in the events of the Unknown War, Geiger is on the move.

In a small town, Geiger wastes no time handling injustice in a very violent way. Johns crafts him as "a good guy but not a nice guy". His methods are vicious and cold. His reasons have good intentions behind them. They are a reflection of the emptiness felt in the new world.

The dynamic with his unlikely "sidekick"? Nate provides a break from the normal brooding periods readers have witnesses. Nate is a lost soul in his own right. Looking for purpose in a man with no clear direction, Nate is written as a sad soul but ultimately has some signs of a possible better future.

Geiger never escapes his past with flashback sequences that remind fans what this whole line is based on: Characters first. Factor in a building final act and the debut hits all the marks ushering in this new line with style and substance.

Frank , Anderson and Leigh display the future (25 years from now) as a lawless and brutal landscape. Geiger exemplifies this point with a gorgeous two page full spread handling the problems in the town he is passing by. There is no shortage of extreme justice with these images. It sets a strong pace for the remainder of the chapter.

Nate and Geiger's encounter is filled with uneasiness and confusion. The reactions on both faces clearly connect to readers on where the personalities will be clashing. Leigh's lettering brings in the next conflict with a half page panel. The action is well times with Anderson's coloring elevating the mere Prescence of Geiger on his attackers. A near full page panel is perfectly quoted with "He's absolutely glorious" as Geiger ascends down to fight.

The flashback moments with Tariq and his family continue to ground the hero. It never lets him (or the reader) lose sight of the human behind the force of nature. The parting images tease what's next like what great storytellers do. Geiger #1 is no exception to that.

The story begins at a junkyard. Jeanie is working with Corn Dog and Boodie. Pickign up the slack of her injured husband, the daily routine for Jeanie has drastically changed.

From here, the story shifts to a party for Alisa. The setting is a kids restaurant. Jeanie talks with her mother. A surprise comes across her way. Jeanie is presented tickets to Hawaii! The pleasant gesture causes a flashback to her younger years. Unfortunately, the happy moment is spoiled as Jody’s injuries. Jody thinks the costumes animals are robots. Sadly for him, they are not….

Once the family is escorted outside, Corn Dog is waiting for payment. Jeanie’s happy day takes a detour due to the “family Business”.

Readers watch as other factors start coming into play. Even a simple family getaway can’t outrun trouble. What can Jeanie do now? The closing act gives some clarity as things might be turning a corner. Will it be short lived or a reality? Time will only tell. The final image bookends the beginning as there appears to be more to Jody’s visions that meet the eye.

The life and times of Jeanie never cease to demonstrate her strengths. The simple task of giving her kids a happy birthday doesn’t allow her to escape the drama surrounding her. Hopeless doesn’t shy away from her challenges. Seeing her deal with a rude camper is prime example.

Hopeless crafts the scene with excellent back and forth commentary with Jody. Their relationship is far from perfect, but its’ Jeanie’s will that pushes it forward. The closing act shows a drastic change in events. Where it ends up will be anyone’s guess.

Jenkins captures Jeanie’s frustration and doesn’t let readers forget about it. The moments with Corn Dog reflects the strain her new “assignment” is taking. Even when the family breaks away for a fun day, the range of emotions pour off the page. This is very evident in the latter half of the book. Once the turning point happens, Jenkins gives the moment a dramatic flare before closing with an ominous panel.

The looming danger of Jody’s past haunts Jeanie’s present with another strong chapter of SROF. Hopeless dabbles between dire straits and defiant will with the writing. Jenkins constructs strong visuals to mirror the possible break Jeanie needs through the emotional rollercoaster she’s unfortunately on. There’s much unfolding within these pages.

BATMAN #146 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, there is a new vigilante in Gotham City. Since emerging as the “new” Batman, Failsafe has been on a rampage against crime. Its’ methods have been extreme. The Bat-family has been proceeding with caution. All the while, fans keep wondering about Bruce Wayne.

Locked away with a broken Joker as a cellmate, Batman needs to find a way to reverse his fortunes. If not, losing Gotham City will be the worst of his problems.

The main story begin with a body being thrown out a window. The airborne figure is Killer Croc. Standing in the broken window frame is the duo of Failsafe and Robin (Damian Wayne). Croc is just another criminal defeated by the extreme measures of Failsafe.

Batgirl (Stephanie Brown) crashes the scene. She tries pleading with Damian about how wrong the new directive is. Damian brushes the pleas off. Failsafe ignores the wishes as well. The cold conversation proves there is dwindling hope that the Batman they know lies inside the robotic body.

Meanwhile, Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon are having a conference call with other DC heroes. The topic is how to handle this new version of Bruce Wayne.

That’s also the topic of discussion from a Blackgate prison cell. Bruce Wayne is plotting an escape from his cell and cellmate: The Joker. Batman will need some luck to pull this. To escape, he needs a distraction. As luck would have it, he gets that intervention as Punchline is the next prisoner brought in

How does this all play out? Readers watch as Batman makes a last-ditch effort to run. The pace speeds with time not on Bat’s side. Factor in the Joker and Punchline looming in the background and there is no easy way out. Plus, Failsafe keeps progressing forward! Just wait for the final pages to play out as the parting image solidifies this is anything but over.

BATMAN #146 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles (backup story by Michele Bandini and Alex Sinclair) - DC COMICS

Zdarksy pens Failsafe making a bold public statement right off the bat. The effortless handling of Killer Croc sends shockwaves. This begins a merciless run with some of DC’s more noteworthy personalities. None more greater than the last encounter for this chapter. Failsafe’s dialogue is cold and unapologetic in response to this moment. Considering the parties involved, readers will have a vested focus on the pair’s next encounter.

Bruce Wayne is showcased at a very low point. Knowing his enemy is a more ruthless version of himself, the challenge is even greater. The pacing reflects the frantic attempt of freedom. Its’ fallout sets more in motion. This all builds for a great close to a very engaging tale.

Jiménez and Morey kick things off with a loud debut of Croc being thrown through a high-rise office window. Cowles’ lettering is the needed piece to exemplify this starting point. The escape from Failsafe prison is given a strong split panel page. With one half featuring the trouble, the other shows Bruce Wayne ready to take the first step to victory.

Failsafe has big interactions spin out of the Croc arrest Fans will be locked in as the Robotic Crusader crashes and apprehends a big name in the DCU. This pleads into the final encounter with a flagship DCU hero. The body language displayed shows readers that this is not the pair of old friends. This moment is two strangers staking their claims to what is unfolding next. The closing images raise the bar for what is coming next, which is another great chapter for fans.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

With a new dynamic duo running loose in Gotham, Batman struggles to find a way to right this wrong. Zdarsky give readers a tale of two Batman with excellent writing. Jiménez, Morey and Cowles let the new Caped Crusader run wild with dynamic imagery. The new era of justice continues on with a chapter fans won’t want to miss.

RISE OF THE POWERS OF X #3 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

The chapter begins with a young Moira McTaggert. With the reveal of her mutant abilities, McTaggert has been a factor in the birth and fall of the Krokoan Era. The narration leads readers on an insight into Moira’s plans. As she plans to celebrate making into her 13th birthday, Moira heads to a meadow from her house.

However, someone is waiting for her there. That person is one Charles Xavier. Keeping the rest of the surrounding area at bay, Xavier plans on doing the unthinkable. If Moria is eliminated before her powers emerge, then the Krokoan Era never exists!

Meanwhile in the future, Moira X connects with a Dominion about a deadly proposition. Readers watch as the deal is presented. What options does Moira have?

This builds into pressure moments for all parties involved. Can Xavier’s team hold off threats long enough for the mission to be completed. What about Moria’s proposal? Events unfold that prove there are no easy answers.

With the gravity of the consequences enormous, Xavier makes a call that potentially changes everything. The question is Will it be the one readers are expecting or not? The final page sets course for a monumental march into the closing issues of this story. Brace yourself. It’s only going to get crazier from here.

Rise of the Powers of X #3 by Kieron Gillen, R.B. Silva, David Curiel, Clayton Cowles (Marvel Entertainment - Cover: Nicoletta Baldari)

Gillen wastes no time diving into the most extreme action of this series. Xavier’s plan is drastic and feels desperate. It mirrors how much the dream of Krokoa has been broken. The writing never lets this point escape. The dialogue hits to illustrate the severity of Xavier’s plan.

Gillen mixes in great side points to add more anxiousness. With the battle taking place in multiple times, the excitement is paced well to hit its mark. The resolution is not so cut and dry per say. There are big ramifications. This builds towards a strong final act. The closing page shifts events for Xavier’s plans which means nothing but win. This is arguably the strongest issue of the series thus far.

Silva and Curiel never let readers loose sight of the impact of Xavier’s actions. The initial moment he confronts a young Moira is gifted with a perfect full page image. The panel set-ups are simplistic but exemplify the matter at hand.

Xavier’s forces in the future get a great opening page as well. The near full page shot hits the acceleration involving them into the mix. Once the matter of Moira is resolved (for better or worse), the imagery carries that momentum into the final pages. With a bold final page, the art team drops a huge exclamation point on the chapter that is sure to have fans talking.

With the fate of the past and future at stake, Xavier’s desperate action takes center stage in this engaging chapter. Gillen constructs a complex dilemma of moral and ethical consequence with the writing. Silva, Curiel and Cowles give readers much to savor with the incredible images. The end is almost here and readers won’t be able to wait to see how this all ends.

MASTERPIECE #4 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

For this entry, the chess match between Zero Preston and Emma “Masterpiece” Lawford continues onward via Dark Horse Comics. With revenge as his motive, Preston crashes into Lawford’s world. An ordinary teenager finds out quickly she’s anything but. Emma’s parents are legendary thieves. Preston was one of their targets. The ultimate revenge for him means ruining her life. Little did he realize what his actions would cause.

MASTERPIECE #4 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, Ian Herring , Moo Meng and Josh Reed dives further into the dangerous cat and mouse game.

Let’s take a deeper dive at what is happening now…

After confronting Preston at his mansion, the favor is returned to Emma and her team. Andrew Garrison the IV leads a group to track down Emma’s presumed location. Once they get inside, the group find no one. All that’s waiting for them is a laptop with a note to “play”.

Emma leaves a video recording. In the message she informs Garrison she has all his hidden information. Readers see the moves set in motion. Emma advises Garrison to quit his chase. If not, how will Preston react knowing he never completed his job?

The answer to that question is interrupted by The Paragon! The imposing figure demonstrates his style of action. He beats the group to a bloody pulp! Once that business is finished, it’s onward to the next phase.

What does Emma have in store now? How will Preston respond to the failure of Garrison? Readers sit ringside as both parties take their plans up a few levels. The final act tips off a few clues as to where the mystery heads now. None will be more impactful than who enters the game on the final page. Just when you think you have all the answers, more questions are thrown into the mix.

Bendis paces the back and forth moments to give readers a closer look into both parties schemes. Emma has emerged as the true heir to her family’s reputation. The dynamic between her set-up for Garrison is through and leads off perfectly for the Paragon to appear. Post the encounter, the story shifts back towards Preston.

The writing reflects his brash defiance that Emma is challenging him. Even with the results of the Paragon’s involvement, Preston looks shaken but refusing to accept his loss. This plays well for the closing act and the drastic measures he takes. Each side gets ample time to shine and this only builds more excitement for what is unfolding within this tale.

Maleev, Herring and Meng give the Paragon a huge entrance into this chapter. Switching from dark Blue to tinted Yellow connects with the change of demeanor and attack. The use of Red also makes the images pop, which is another cool technique.

The page panel used for Preston’s reaction is a complex one that readers will enjoy. The facial reactions vary to Preston finally comprehending what is going on. The grainy footage from the tablet also stands out to amplify his emotions. This builds towards a nice parting shot to throw another twist into a can’t miss story.

With revenge fueling the dangerous game of cat and mouse, the showdown between Lawford and Preston takes things up a few notches. Through flawless writing and exceptional imagery, each party make bold moves to ensure victory. Will it be enough in the end?

THE DEAD LUCKY #12 (BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE/IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of a Massive-verse Pillar’s second arc. Since returning to her hometown of San Francisco, Bibiana Lopez-Yang has been challenged by Morrow. The tech company and its boss Jimmi Moss has plans of changing the city. Being a reluctant hero, Bibi has been thrusted into the role of protector.

The battle for San Francisco has not been easy or without loss. Bibi’s former boyfriend and longtime ally Eddie Martinez was a casualty of this conflict. Conflicting matters more has been the re-appearance of Pyre. With everything she has gone through, Bibi continues to act by a certain motto: “I don’t need to be good. I just needs to be lucky.”

THE DEAD LUCKY #12 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO AND BECCA CAREY (along with editor Michael Busuttil) brings the battle of San Francisco to a stunning finish.

Bibi and Pyre watch the chaos unfold between Morrow’s forces and Bibi’s small mech team. The conversation doesn’t go the way Bibi would like. She talks of teaming up to end things once and for all. Pyre is more intent on watching the world burn. Unwilling to just sit by, Bibi leaves the talk.

Meanwhile, Jimmi Moss has become a twisted version of a “better tomorrow”. Moss has turned himself into a type of cyborg to fend off a terminal illness. He’s taking the mayor hostage. Moss wants chaos and won’t stop till he gets it.

The stage is set as Bibi makes her way to the Mayor’s office. What chance does Bibi have of ending Moss’s streak of terror? Readers sit back and watch how the actions of both have led to this very explosive meeting.

The fallout is well paced as a battle of this proportion isn’t so cut and dry. Most importantly, the fallout effects Bibi in a strong evolution of character. The closing act is a bittersweet epilogue to the battle. Readers can expect a wide range of emotions with Bibi’s words guiding them along the way.

The final page is a perfect way to say good bye for now, but definitely NOT forever….

Flores brings a fitting and intense close to the latest chapter of Bibi’s journey. For this second arc, much time has been devoted to Pyre’s return and his impact. The opening monologue reflects the deep rooted ties of their past. It also serves as a sort of closure for the pair as this entire run has been constructed for one certain showdown….

The confrontation between Bibi and Moss gives readers a long awaited payoff. Flores’ writing shows the natural growth of Bibi in her role of hero. There is one moment which highlights this over others. The transformation from revenge driven mindset to protector of the city is exemplified within this moment. The epilogue is a heartfelt send-off to one chapter of Bibi’s life as she welcomes a new one ahead. It’s a superb closing point in the ever-changing world for one Bibiana Lopez-Yang.

Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey multi-task the intense drama and big action for this conclusion. The opeing pages reflect those themes. From Bibi’s reaction to the battle right to the big battle itself, the art team brings out all the stops for the art.

Another major image is when Bibi crashes the Mayor’s office. It’s a mid page panel that structures the page into a turning point. The pacing keeps events moving forward with ease. The conflict is officially over with a full page image of Bibi speaking about her dreams.

The final pages help lift the weight of the strong writing to carry the book to the finish line. The parting image is well-crafted and will leave readers on a high note for the future.

The latest chapter of Bibiana Lopez-Yang ends on a solid, bittersweet ending. Flores’ writing showcases the growth of not only a hero but the person behind the powers. Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey put together the impactful imagery that concludes events for time being, but readers will be lucky to see more down the road.
