Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re continuing the adventure of Edwin Slaughter in the pages of the “Something Is Killing The Children” spin-off, House of Slaughter. House of Slaughter #9 by James Tynion, Sam Johns, Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, Andworld Design and Werther Dell’edera for Boom Studios has been a fascinating thriller as a reluctant choice from the Order of St. George has been tasked to solve a mystery. Edwin’s story has taken some great twists and turns thus far with this issue set to offer some clarity on our lead character. Let’s check out this latest issue and see what’s going on, shall we?

Last issue, readers witnessed Edwin start unlocking something hidden in his memory. It has been the latest hurdle in his mission to unlock a series of bodies washing up on a campsite in Lake Michigan. Now stranded at sea with his brush, Hermes, a memory comes into play that will impact Edwin moving forward. This issue kicks off with Edwin talking to a revealed Hermes about what he’s seeing. The memory shifts into the first days where the Order caught wind of a boy who was discovered by his dead mother. The scenes are dark and saddening as Edwin’s life is discussed by the people who find the body.

From here, the memories go further as Edwin starts to recall the monster who killed his mother. How this all unfolds will hit readers very suddenly as many secrets are revealed. By the time this issue is completed, Edwin’s origin story has been unfolded. Will it be one Edwin can handle or one that breaks him completely? Will he have time to handle the reveals before the true threat makes its appearance? The status quo of this story changes forever with this issue.

Edwin’s story doesn’t fall short of impressing. The tragic tale connects readers to how Edwin sees the world while explaining why his memories were blocked out for so long. It’s a clever story that Tynion and Johns compose. The dynamic of Hermes and Edwin has been an odd one to say the least but with the reveals here, things come into focus. The pacing never faults as readers take the dive into Edwin’s past. The issue feels as readers are seeing the final goodbyes to its lead character as he prepares for the inevitable encounter with the cause of his mission. It’s excellent storytelling as the fans have come to expect from this book. Expect no let down here.

Cadonici presents Edwin’s story with some stunning visuals. Setting up the flashbacks, Cadonici sets up the flashbacks with great assistance from Segala on coloring, giving each section a different feel. This comes across noticeably well when Edwin is confronted by a monster. The usage of black and red escalate the danger at hand. Another compliment to the story was the 12-cube panels when Edwin processes what Hermes is telling him involving the story. It feels like a big moment and doesn’t let down. Edwin’s tale closes out with a final image that looks to close out this story on a very solid note.

Overall, The story of Edwin Slaughter continues to be a story you can’t put down. Tynion, Johns and the team deliver on a highly revealing issue that gives major insight to our lead character. It feels as one chapter closes before an even bigger event is about to begin. There’s no let down in the quality of content within these pages. Make sure to check this book out when it drops at the LCS this week.

For this entry, we’re checking out the final story chapter of the initial arc of Boom Studios’ smash hit new series! GRIM #5 by by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano for Boom Studios has been nothing but a runaway success. Multiple printings right out the gate and Jessica Harrow is in top contention for best new character of 2022 without question. Let’s not waste any more time and jump into the latest installment, shall we?

Jessica Harrow’s (after)life as been nothing short of an adventure. Being a reaper and guiding a stray soul into the ever-after, the soul escapes and Jessica follows suit into the land of the living. Once there, she crosses over where she can be seen as a human. With the mystery of how this happened looming overhead, Jessica has been on the run from Adira, her boss who doesn’t want her searching any more. She’s not he only one invested in Jessica as The End, a force of nature who is looking to restore balance. The journey has led Jessica and her friends to Las Vegas in search of Death, who has been lurking in Sin City for quite some time.

This issue kicks off with Death explaining to Jessica his connection to Adira. Readers will be on the edge of their seats as the twisted history unfolds. However, that’s not the only reveal as Jessica finally finds out the big secret about her: she is Death’s daughter!

With that feel-good moment, it becomes an after thought when The End crashes the party. What happens from here will shock everyone! Does Jessica survive this encounter? What factor does Adira play in this? And are readers ready for that final page?! You simply can’t pass on this issue!

Phillips continues the excellent work with this story. Just when you think you have everything figured out, Phillps throws everything out the window and hits you with something you weren’t expecting. This issue had many reveals, none arguably bigger than the reveal of Death being Jessica’s father. The fallout from that delivers on all points. This series never misses on perfect timing and placement for huge moments. The final parting points of this issue will have fans clamoring for the next issue. Jessica’s story is far from over and that’s a win for everyone.

Flaviano forges another visually impressive issue. The entire conversation with Death and Jessica easily connects with readers. The full page reveal drives home the importance of the moment. The battle with The End felt epic and it’s resolution couldn’t have been depicted better than what Flaviano presented. Even the subtle song lyrics for “My Father’s House” by Bruce Springsteen (which music has become a staple of this series) capped off a phenomenal read.

Overall, Grim #5 closes one chapter and will have fans begging for more after reading this issue. Phillips, Flaviano and company keep their hot streak rolling with another fantastic issue of one of the best series at the LCS! Highly recommended!

In the pages of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Universe books by BOOM STUDIOS, fans have been on the “Charge To 100” under the writing helm of Ryan Parrott for the past six years. Parrott’s work has delivered some of the biggest moments in the MMPR fandom. If for some reason you haven’t checked out his runs on “Mighty Morphin” & “Power Rangers”. do yourself a favor and give those issues a read. “The Eltarian War” might be my current favorite story in all of MMPR history. This will be Parrott’s last issue with the series. For anyone worried about the series future, it’s in very good hands with Melissa Flores (The Dead Lucky) and Simona Di Gianfelice on art duties coming on board with issue #101. That said, Parrott’s run might be concluding but he’s not leaving without a well-deserved star-studded send-off!

From the events of the “Power Rangers” series, The inhabitants of Planet KO-35 have been getting brought back to life by the Death Ranger, who used Andros , a lone survivor looking for revenge, to accomplish this feat. Originally possessing the vessel of Andros’s friend Zhane, The Death Ranger has now taken control of the Omega Rangers (Jason, Yale, Zach and Trini) by tapping into the Morphin Grid! With an army of the undead forming, our heroes look to be in very dire times.

All the while in the pages of “Mighy Morphin” (written by Mat Groom), the earth-stationed team (Aisha - Yellow Ranger, Adam - Black Ranger, Rocky - Red Ranger, Billy - Blue Ranger, Kimberly - Pink Ranger, Matt - Green Ranger and Tommy - White Ranger) lost their command center during the Eltarian War and have been pulling an “Oceans’ 11” -esque heist to acquire a new home. During this mix, some of the team have been doing some self reflections on their futures and supporting Jason, who has been grieving the sudden loss of his mother. With no time to take a breath, Andros, along with Xi, Journey and Keron Vrin appear in the new command center to seek help against this threat.

The team comes up with a plan to stop the Death Ranger, but some are weary to trust Andros. Readers can’t blame some for acting this way. It is his actions that led to the Omega Rangers to be taken under the Death Ranger’s influence). Andros gives them a strong reassurance that he is committed to helping them, even if it means sacrificing himself to do it. Once the team fully buys in, IT’S MORPHIN TIME!!!!

The team teleports to the planet of KO-35 and know that there’s immanent danger ahead. It doesn’t take long before they are greeted by the Death Ranger’s forces. Once all the major players arrive, the battle kicks off with a fantastic one-page panel to kick things off! Rangers vs. Possessed Rangers and the undead…get your popcorn ready! There are a lot of great match-ups that will have readers on the edge of their seats reading. Don’t doubt that there is some big-time Zord action thrown in as well.

However, the main event will be the one fans will be most impacted by. Without going into heavy spoiler territory, One ranger’s journey is changed dramatically in an attempt to stop the Death Ranger once and for all. It’s a play that was needed to be made to try stopping the threat at hand and showcases what makes this hero one of the most noteworthy in all of MMPR lore. Get ready for that conclusion’s scene! Is that enough to stop the Death Ranger though? Read and find out!

The conclusion of this comic will be one to pull at the emotions of readers who have been with this franchises since day 1 or just jumping on board at the recent arcs. Some stories close for good, some stop for now, but the one thing that will always remain true is there will always be Power Rangers stepping up to fight the good fight. Very strong final image to close out on.

Give the man his flowers asap! Parrott leaves the world of MMPR (for now) with an incredible ending for all fans. This issue has many moving parts going on but Parrott balances out all the actions with some strong emotional work. At no point did anything feel rushed or forced due to the large cast of characters involved. The battle sequences flowed with great backstories behind them. Possessed Trini squaring off with “adopted” alien daughter Journey and Possessed Jason vs. Tommy are the two battles that hit all their points. However it’s when Andros gets involved with the fight versus Jason that this book picks things up tenfold. Parrott built everything to a fever pitch that when the resolution moment hits, readers will have a resounding “YES!” reaction. That said, it’s the closing act of this book that shows why Parrott’s run has all the well-deserved praise behind it. The narrator’s words hit very hard with how the MMPR world is now changed. Readers will go thru a wide range of emotions during this chapter but that’s why Parrott has earned the notoriety of being such a strong storyteller. Amazing Job!

As for the art, there are many people involved with this issue, but the majority of page time (and rightfully so) went to series regulars Moises Hidalgo (“Mighty Morphin”) and Marco Renna (“Power Rangers”). The art delivered on making this an event. From the initial one-page kickoff battle panel thru the fight scenes, Hidalgo set an early pace for the book that never fell off. The action felt big. This was crucial to establish how significant this battle was. Handing off the battle scenes to Renna never took anything away frm the overall story. Action was moving fast but always stayed on track. Even when the zords came into play, both artists had great moments to work with. The guest artists listed played an important role in dealing with that one Ranger’s final battle and resolution. It gave that moment a unique feel to illustrated what was happening. Renna’s work closing out a character’s story he’s worked with was fitting and added another level of gravity to the scene’s impact. The art teams really outdid themselves on this issue to close his chapter over MMPR on a definitive high note.

Overall, the Ryan Parrott era of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ends with everything you would expect from someone who’s taken the Rangers to new heights and legacy adventures. Parrott and the all-star art teams gift fans with an issue they won’t be able to put down or stop talking about. As for the future of Parrott and the Rangers, it won’t be long before we see them together again as he will be teaming with Dan Mora on a new MMPR/TMNT crossover book coming in December 2022! Until then, Ryan - thanks for the memories and the incredible books along the way! Don’t miss this issue at the LCS this week!

For this entry, we’re heading towards the conclusion of one of the most buzzworthy comics at the LCS! BRZRKR #10 by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney, Bill Crabtree, and Clem Robins for Boom Studios continues to forge its’ violent saga of B, half man, half god. The story has definitely gone into some shocking directions and continues to impress. With three issues left, let’s see how this book prepares to conclude their comic chapter (as they have some spinoff projects in the works), shall we?

BRZRKR #10 - On Sale September 21st

Where we start, B (or Unute) is healing up from the experiences over the last few issues. His only friend/doctor Diana now has developed powers due to exposure from the radiation explosion from B’s situation. They are talking telepathically now and coming to term on all the changes and where they’re heading to next. This concerns and fascinates Dr. Caudwell, who’s been using B since the beginning of the story. Seeing that Diana now has abilites is an X factor he wasn’t expecting.

While allowing B to heal up, all the major players are setting up plans for what will be the final mission in uncovering B’s secret. With a venture to the location of where B thinks his secrets are buried. Will B be able to handle what is uncovered. What is Caudwell planning now that the end appears to be near? Plus just wait till you see the final page! Readers are NOT ready to see how this issue sets things up moving forward.

Reeves and Kindt are setting thins in motion for the final trek. B’s story continues to move where readers are constantly guessing what’s next (which is not a bad thing). This issue keeps up that tradition with some misdirection. The biggest mystery has now shifted towards Diana. It appears she might be playing both sides against each other at one stage, but seems like she’s already chosen her ally. The main point of this issue will have readers buzzing as where it leads, I’m not sure anyone saw coming. That’s one thing to note about the writing with this book: Nothing is out of the question when it comes to the mystery of B.

Garney extends the strong work with another great issue. Right from the start, readers can sense the psychic conversation between B and Diana without tipping too much off to Caudwell. It’s great visual storytelling. Walkign the readers thru Caudwell’s planning while B was recovering also stood out. He was never tipping off too much to anyone, especially to the readers. That said, all will more than likely be overshadowed by this issue’s conclusion. It’s a huge exclamation point to put on the issue and sets the countdown to the end fully in motion.

Overall, BRZRKR #10 moves the story along with a chapter that feels like the calm before the storm. The creative team puts the key players into position where once the final moment begins, it will be a non stop run to the finish. Check this book out when you’re at the LCS this week.

RADIANT BLACK #18 by Kyle Higgins, Laurence Homles, Stefeno Simeone, Igor Monti, Becca Carey & Michael Busuttil for Image Comics presents one of the most creative origin stories in recent memory: Radiant Yellow. This kind of imaginative storytelling is a staple from the team at Black Market Narrative, which is home to other amazing books like Rogue Sun, Inferno Girl Red and The Dead Lucky just to name a few.

The “Massive-Verse” line is only matched by the energy of their fan base. Look at what AmazngNickanger made to hype this issue! Let’s not delay any longer and jump into the latest chapter from the flagship book of “The Massive-Verse” and deep dive into this incredible issue, shall we?

RADIANT BLACK #18 - On sale September 21st

From what readers have seen of him in previous issues, Radiant Yellow has always been a voice of reason when deal with the other Radiants. How he grew into that voice has always been a story fans have waited to see. With this issue, the story of Wendell George (aka Radiant Yellow) is presented to readers in a very creative way. Each page is broken down into four specific years of his life: 1984, 2002, 2020 and 2038, where each year’s panels stretches across the book equally. In 1984 Wendell has just graduated from Purdue with a degree in engineering. His wife is expecting their first child. Wendell thinks his landed a dream job but not everything is as what it seems. However, when that chapter ends, Wendell’s life is forever changed.

Jumping to 2002, Wendell and his wife Zandra are trying to celebrate their daughter Ziza 18th birthday and not everything is as easy as they hoped. As the years progressed, Wendell’s dream job has not been the dream he hoped it would be. With an ever changing business environment, Wendell struggles with a work/life balance. The damage this is doing is immense and leads to nothing good. Fast forward to 2020, Wendell is starting careers over as everything he’s built has crashed around him. It’s a humbling and somber moment, but a fateful encounter changes everything. Lastly, 2039 is a whole level of change happening as Wendell is surviving thru a devastated world. His companion is a great surprise that long-time Massive-verse fans will appreciate that cameo. What is the mission that ties this all together? How does the landscape in the Massiveverse change moving forward? Readers will have much to enjoy with this incredible issue.

Absolutely fantastic issue from Higgins (along with Laurence Holmes) concerning the overall theme of this story. “We Are Products Of Our Decisions” is a quote dropped later in the book that perfectly ties all four stories together. As readers see, every choice Wendell makes with good intentions fails with its executions. The slow breakdown of what he’s strived for is masterfully showcased. From having the optimism of just graduating with degree and family in tow to ultimately losing more than hope, Higgins and Holmes combines real-world challenges with the super hero surroundings that connects on many levels. By the time this issue concludes, one can’t help but to buy into seeing where he goes from here.

Simeone steps in for art duties here and absolutely crushes it! From how each story flows from page to page, Simeone gives them their own emotional weight without ever becoming lost in the shuffle. Each one guides the reader along Wendell’s saga and drives home the points of his character. Without spoiling too much, once the second acts conclude in each story, the art adds so much to those moments that you simply can’t avoid the impact when they hit. Even with the little super hero elements featured, this issue packs all fantastic traits that readers have grown accustom to with this book and brand.

Overall, Radiant Black #18 is one issue fans will be talking about for quite some time due to it’s amazing creativity. Higgins, Holmes Simeone and the team introduce the hidden tale of Wendell George to the masses with an incredible tale proving all thing are connected. Highest possible recommendation at the LCS this week. Don’t miss it!

Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #3 by Stephanie Phillips, Valeria Favoccia, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, and Saida Temofonte continues Rose’s latest troubles with a mysterious companion now along for the ride. With more danger surrounding them, let’s not waste another second and jump right into a deep dive on this issue, shall we?

Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #3 - On Sale September 20th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The latest installment of Beatrix Rose’s saga has been quite the captivating one. Rose has re-emerged after being betrayed by her own British intelligence team in Japan. Now working freelance for the Triad to hunt down the killer known as “Yaomo” or “Demon,” Rose has become locked in on completing her assignment no matter what. The previous run-ins with Yaomo have not gone in her favor. At the end of the last issue, Rose faked Yaomo’s death to help her escape. It was a drastic change in events but Rose saw a lot of her own young daughter in Yaomo which caused Rose to re-assess. With the repercussions of her actions coming, Rose and Yaomo now have a bigger target on both of their heads.

This issue opens up with an investigation into the apparent death of Yaomo. Wit no body being discovered, the Triad has their doubts of what has happened and immediately begin to look in the direction of Beatrix Rose. Meanwhile, Beatrix and Yaomo escape to a safe house to make plans for what their next moves are. During this exchange, Yaomo has to be helped with dealing with a stab wound….caused by Beatrix. In tending to the wound, Yaomo opens up (not without some great back and forth tension) about why she is on a deadly mission versus the Triad. Readers get a great insight to the character and also get a healthy does of action before closing out the book with a final parting shot to hype the next chapter.

The emotional layers of Beatrix Rose really shine thru this issue. Phillips walks the readers thru Rose’s complex situation without losing track of the overall mission at hand. Protecting Yaomo now fills a void from losing her family. Seeing the lengths she goes to save and help Yaomo is a strong point to this chapter. Even with the more emotional points, the story NEVER loses its’ espionage feel. Take the moment with Rose attending to Yaomo’s stab wound for prime example. Phillips also writes great narration from Rose’s perspective to guide the readers thru what she’s seeing. This is anything but an ordinary spy tale and one you simply can not miss.

Favoccia creates a solid balance of drama and action with this issue. Seeing Yaomo’s backstory come to life is one readers can fully grasp her motivations around. Rose’s mannerisms in dealing with helping Yaomo stand out as well. Witnessing how Rose flips from protector to spy in the course of a few panels (see the wound/gun panels) is very noteworthy. The action stands out as it has from the first issue. Even with this being more of a dramatic issue than the previous two (imo), it still carries that same momentum right up to the last page.

Overall, The adventures of Beatrix Rose continue to be a must-read with this latest entry. Phillips, Favoccia & the team present another fantastic balance of high action and drama that readers simply can’t put down. Make sure to check this book out on Comixology this week.

If you’re not a regular Valiant reader, Bloodshot will sound familiar to you as he was the tile character of the 2020 movie starring Vin Diesel. This book first made some buzz at this year’s FREE Comic Book Day and WOW, does it ever deliver! Note: The imagery in this book is very intense and can be disturbing to some. The issue opens up with a Valiant staple: An introduction page for new readers or may need a refresher in the character’s story. The introduction here is very brief but hits all the major points: A super-soldier created with nanotechnology by Project: Rising Spirit, Bloodshot has broken free from their control and forges his own path thru the Valiant Universe.

Our story begins with a flashback of Bloodshot sitting and walking the readers thru memories of his previous life. This vision forges into a nightmare as time with his family turns into time in battle. How Bloodshot copes with this unfolds into a disturbing and intense scene: Shooting himself in the head. From there, Bloodshot walks readers thru how he heals from the self inflicted fatal blow in demonstration of his powers. Once again, this is a MATURE READERS series so nothing is held back. However a mysterious stranger crashes into Bloodshot’s life changing the course of direction into the next stage.

At this stage, the book speeds into the present as Bloodshot walking thru the aftermath of a brutal war-zone in the heartland of America. The mission is to find and handle an escapee from a government holding zone for extreme walking weapons….much like our protagonist himself. With a literal army of dangerous former super soldiers deemed too lethal to be back in society after service now roaming free to wreck havoc and destruction, there’s only one force of nature who can stop them: Bloodshot. Readers get taken on a ride to a human demolition derby with nothing but chaos and carnage. If the first encounter with one of the escapees is any indication, get ready for your new favorite action comic!

You want to talk about setting the pace early for a new series? Camp welcomes Bloodshot and Valiant into the land of Mature Readers comics with an issue that hits readers without pulling any punches. The issue is brutal, unflinching and violently incredible all at once. Seeing how Bloodshot deals with his current state is not for the faint. With that said, the pacing of the issue really spreads out what is going on here. Without spoiling anything here, it’s perfectly set to go back to the assignment’s origin to not be overwhelmed with all the action going on when Bloodshot confronts his target. This is a whole new side of Bloodshot we haven’t seen before and everyone’s on for something special here.

Davis-Hunt delivers on some of the biggest action sequences you’ll ever see on a comic page. With the title being “Unleashed”, that is EXACTLY what is happening here. The fight in the latter half of the book has that “Big Fight Feel” to it that one would expect from a “Terminator 2” -esque movie. The moments feel HUGE! With the Mature Readers Banner on this book, Davis-Hunt is really opening up on the imagery for this story. It is almost a perfect bookend with the intensity of the “couch” scene that opens the book to the final moments of this issue. Excellent job unleashing Valiant’s super soldier onto the comic shops!

Overall, Bloodshot Unleashed #1 presents the world of Bloodshot in an unapologetic and unforgiving vision that is a welcome addition to the Valiant Universe. Camp, Davis-Hunt and the team present the title character with a captivating story surrounded by incredible artwork. Don’t miss this issue when it drops on NCBD at your LCS!

For this entry, we’re checking out a new series on the great Comixology Originals line by way of Marc Bernardin. Readers might know Marc Bernardin’s name from the Eisner award nominee “Adora and The Distance” along with his work in podcasting (Fatman Beyond w/ Kevin Smith) and TV (Star Trek: Picard). Census #1 by Bernardin, Adam Freeman, Sebastián Piriz, Bernardo Brice and Sarah Litt welcomes readers into the life of Liam Malone and his first day on the job, which is anything but normal. Let’s not waste any more time and jump into this first issue, shall we?

This issue kicks off with with one of the best “You’re probably wondering how I got here” pages in recent memory. Liam is tied up with only his underwear on while 3 demons are standing over him. From here, readers are taken back to the day prior as Liam is going for a job interview. This scenario seems very normal as Liam is talking to a possible employer with a simple job posting: “ Good Pay, Flexible Hours, No Experience Needed”. It sounds too god to be true, especially for someone looking for a win. Liam gets the job with the Census Bureau, which sounds like it will be a simple job. At this stage in life , Liam should know that anything that sounds this perfect is more than likely flawed.

With a tablet in hand, Liam sets out to count the residents of his first assigned address. With should be a routine count in a Brooklyn apartment spins wildly out of control. What starts as a friendly conversation quickly speeds into another moment that our protagonist was not expecting when he signed up for this job. Readers will see how Liam got into the mess in page 1 and if he can find his way out of that crazy scene. The conclusion of this issue will leave readers with a clear sense of where the book is heading and that they need to jump on board now.

Very solid debut issue. Bernardin, (along with Adam Freeman) create a fun beginning on Liam’s journey. The story is great balance with horror and supernatural elements along with well placed shots of comedy mixed in. Those themes rise up more to the reader when referencing the initial first case. Liam’s means to escape is quite the creative one that does cause a laugh out loud moment. No spoilers here, but it’s presented in a way that readers can only see Liam pulling off. The storytelling plays into his awkwardness in dealing with others as a strength. At no point did I feel that the story feel too cliche and it made for an enjoyable welcome into the life and times of Liam Malone.

Piriz’s art brings this story to life with capturing Liam’s ineptness into the new job field he’s entered. The facial expressions being showcased tell much of Liam’s character. Seeing his interactions with one of the residents of his first assignment to his new boss and what’s revealed at the end, Piriz crafts Liam’s conversations with a feel of uncertainty and reluctance. Readers will be able to pick up on this part of his character rather quickly but it’s never something that takes them out of the story. In fact, it’s something that as this series goes forward will become a stronger focus for readers to get behind and root for Liam to win.

Overall, Census #1 provides readers with a great story of self-discovery and unexpected travels through the backdrop of New York City. Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz and the rest of the creative team present readers with the saga of Liam Malone. Where it goes from here is anyone’s guess, but that’s why I feel it will be one that you simply can’t miss reading each month. Make sure to check it out on Comixology this week.

For this entry, We’re nearing the conclusion of Boom Studios’ violent horror saga of the fearsome supernatural five. Basilisk #11 by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, Alex Guimaraes & Ed Dukeshire sets up the major players for the apocalyptic conclusion forthcoming. Let’s jump into this issue and see how this story prepares for its’ final confrontation, shall we?

Basilisk #11 - On Sale September 7th

The story has dwindled down to a few major players as readers head to the finish line:

Hannah, who is the lone survivor of a Chimera attack, as made a deal with devil after barely surviving her last run-in with the sinister group.

Vanessa, who has become the last true member of the Chimera but hasn’t been able to stop Hannah yet.

Regan, who defected from the Chimera to help Hannah, but fell out of her graces and is lost in direction at the moment.

This issue opens up with a flashback sequence of Vanessa’s upbringing and more reveals of how this incarnation of the Chimera came to be. Vanessa is talking with Regan in the present. The conversation feels like the final goodbye as they go over her sorted history. All the while Hannah has now partnered with Barret, a disciple of the Chimera, who wants to see Vanessa eliminated once and for all and will sacrifice Hannah to do it.

The rest of the story plays out with the hidden tale of how the Chimera came into contact with the cult that has found Vanessa. It is some frightening imagery but readers will get some long awaited answers to how the violent reign began. They also see how one of the last characters left is preparing for whats to come. As always, no punches are pulled here. The build is done well as it now appears that the final confrontation is ready to be told.

Bunn sets the pace for is sure to be a memorable final farewell to this horrific tale. The road of Vanessa has been a very interesting story to follow as she has gone thru some dramatic changes sine the early days of this book. With this issue, it appears that she is fully aware of what is coming with the conversation she has with Regan. The majority of the issue is centered here as new information about the Chimera is brought to light. Hannah’s big moment form last issue feels almost as an after thought but when put into context, her story is just about told so no need to add more to close. Regan will be one to watch as she seems to be the odd one out in the shuffle. Solid build towards what’s coming.

Even with the conclusion forthcoming, Scharf doesn’t slow down with the disturbing imagery. Vanessa’s flashback tale shows of how brutal her story truly is. This book doesn’t break away from what it’s known for. It is not one for the weak at heart. The art delivers on setting the mood for what’s about to go down. The final sequences with Vanessa are prime examples with the big “exclamation points” put on with the final full page shot.

Overall, Basilisk #11 felt like the last hurrah between two characters going into the last confrontation. Bunn, Scharf and company tie up some loose ends while creating the landscape for one hell of a finale. Don’t miss this book when it drops at the LCS this week.

After last issue, let’s not waste another moment and jump right in to see where Bridgette, Duncan and Rose stand now, shall we?

Bridgette McGuire, her grandson Duncan & his friend Rose have been thru some dire situations in 28 past issues, but nothing like what is coming now. They have suffered a time slip that has caused an issue with their plan to stop the battle with an evil “King Arthur.” Meanwhile, Bridgette’s daughter Mary lost her son Galahad recently and has started to work with her estranged mother to end this madness. Throw in the fact that Rose was apparently killed last issue by the Green Knight.

This issue opens up with a remembrance at Galahad’s grave. Mary is nowhere to be found, but Rose’s mother is attending the grave. It has an eerie backdrop as Rose lays dead at the blade of the Green Knight. From this moment, The Knight challenges The evil King and is killed instantly. However all is not what it seems. Rose survives as she is in possession of the King’s Scabbard. At this moment, there is a HUGE GAME CHANGER MOMENT that I won’t spoil but WOW! The rest of the issue literally throws a brick on the gas petal and never looks back. The final moments are set up for Bridgette, Duncan, Mary and Rose! If you’ve ever read this series before, these final issues are must haves!

Gillen wastes no time in delivering some epic moments with this issue. None will be bigger than Rose’s survival from the Green Knight. Readers will have much to process here. The pacing works and even when the book feels faster in storytelling, nothing feels forced or lost. The major reveal has a lasting impact and sets forth a domino effect for the other characters. Everyone is getting their screen time to finish out their journeys . All the cards are on the table here. Absolutely a must read (Grade 10/10).

There is no better artist in comics at this moment than Dan Mora. Superstar work being done with the highly imaginative tale being presented here. There is an epic battle within these pages and Mora delivers on a “big fight feel” with so much emotion, you can’t help but feel it as a reader. The visuals never cease to impress. One of the biggest downers of seeing this comic conclude is not seeing Mora push the creative limits with this vastly changing retelling of characters. Phenomenal work 10/10

Overall, Once and Future #29 is a comic that simply put: can NOT be missed this week! Gillen, Mora and company set the stage for what should be an intense closing of one of comics’ best books. Make this a priority to pick up this week at the LCS!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re taking a look at the first project from Marvel Arts, which is a partnership between Abrams Comic Arts and Marvel Comics. FANTASTIC FOUR: FULL CIRCLE #1 by Alex Ross (legendary artist of “Marvels” and “Kingdom Come”), Josh Johnson, and Ariana Maher is the debut graphic novel from this venture. If graphic novels sound a bit familiar, they were a staple of Marvel in the 1980’s (One notable one was X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills which was the inspiration for “X2 X-Men United” movie). To bring them back, it has to stand out at the comic shops and deliver. There is a tremendous amount of hype behind this project. Let’s take a deeper dive and see how this new project shapes up, shall we?

FANTASTIC FOUR: FULL CIRCLE #1 - On Sale Sept. 6th

Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic). Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and Ben Grimm (The Thing) comprise one for the most legendary teams in all of pop culture fandom. No adventure is ever normal and the one happening here fits the mold perfectly.

The story opens up on a rainy evening with Ben making the most of his evening in the Baxter Building. A midnight snack gets interrupted by Johnny. The playful banter that has been long associated with the first family of Marvel gets stopped when a mysterious figure appears. The intruder’s identity turns out to be someone who tried impersonating Ben in the past tying into Reed’s first adventure into the Negative Zone. However, before they can really examine why he has returned, mysterious creatures start flying out of his mouth, basically using his body as a Trojan horse to attack the family.

After the creatures are subdued, Reed goes to work breaking down what has happened. The creatures gave off negative energy. That is a trademark of what readers might have already suspected but it was confirmed: The Negative Zone and it’s ruler Annihilus looks to be prime suspect. The team suits up and makes their way into the every-dangerous environment.

Once they arrive, they start tracking down the source of the creatures. When they come across what’s happening, it’s a sight they’re not ready to expect. What do they see, better yet WHO do they see? The story begins an epic journey into the unknown as readers are taken on a roller coaster ride of imagination. How will this story unfold from here? Readers will have much excitement to enjoy as this book brings out the strengths and charm of Marvel’s First Family in a vintage tale for everyone.

What a fantastic read! Ross takes themes from Fantastic Four #51 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (1961) and introduces them to an entire new fan base. Ross steps away from his traditional painted art storytelling style to really hone in on the Kirby energy for this book. The scenes pop from page to page. Take a look at the incredible preview art for this book. When anyone can give the visual impression of recapturing “The King’s” magic, it is one of the highest complements someone can give (IMO). Ross nailed it out of the park. The story felt like a throwback but not losing any appeal to modern readers who might not be as familiar with the early days for the FF.

The story itself was one that carried itself with wonderment. Diving into the world of the Negative Zone can be tricky yet, was pulled off flawlessly here. Tying in other elements of the FF’s world (The banter between Ben & Johnny, Reed’s quest for knowledge) presented excellent moments throughout. At no point did this book feel dated to where it lost interest. It reminded older readers why the Fantastic Four was a staple at the comic shops since the 1960’s. It also catches new readers with how unique it looks and reads. It’s quirky, vibrant and engaging. It’s a fantastic experience all around (pun intended). Great work.

Overall, Fantastic Four: Full Circle #1 is an excellent story with mind-blowing visuals throughout. Ross takes a risk going away from his traditional style which fans come to expect and wins the gamble. The experience is nothing short of a memorable read that comic fans need to make a point to check out. Don’t miss this book at the comic shops this week.

How is Dudley faring after the last issue’s cliffhanger? Let’s jump back in for a deep dive on this incredible new book, shall we?

Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine #2 - On Sale September 6th

Dudley Datson’s life is one that is ever-changing. Datson is a young teenager who’s an inventor of “Duds” an L.C.D. integrated fiber clothing. After presenting it with a less than stellar execution, Dudley bears witness to Dr. Shae, his mentor at the Brooklyn Academy of Engineering, defending herself from attackers who are trying to take a valuable watch. Defending is putting things mildly as Dr. Shae is wearing an exoskeleton to fend off these attackers. Now caught up in a situation he’s not ready for, Dudley gets help from an unlikely ally: Daedalus, Dr. Shae’s dog….who apparently can now talk?!

This issue picks up with the attackers now shifting focus towards Dudley. Daedalus shows that not only can he talk, but can handle his own verses these forces. Once one gets the upper hand on Daedalus, Dudley uses some quick thinking to handle the crisis at hand using his own invention. Noticing that his aggressor isn’t human, Datson makes a play to subdue the threat & the pair escape danger.

From here, Datson and Daedalus catch up about what is going on here. With a touch of excitement, Datson is introduced to the Chymical Society. What is the story behind this group? Better yet, What is the origin of Daedalus? How does Dudley fit into this equation? Readers will get those answers plus a final page that will keep them locked in until the next issue drops.

Snyder continues to craft a fun and energetic story with the life of Dudley Datson. The issue explains much of Daedalus and why he is WAY more than he seems. The secrets involved with his character were very surprising and validated on how creative this story is. This book’s storytelling shines when they go all in on focusing readers onto the multi-layered elements of it’s main characters. The dynamic between Daedalus and Dudley is enjoyable and only gets better as the issue progresses forward. “Reluctant Partners” is an understatement but this issue proves there will be many more panels with these two that should make readers very pleased following Dudley’s journey moving forward.

Igle’s artwork continues to impress with the details thrown in this issue. Seeing Daedalus’ story explained thru the timeline was a great segment. Everything down to the panel set-up made that part jump off the page. One of the more fun moments in this book was how the pair accessed the entrance to the Chymical Society. When reading this book, readers can tell how much enjoyment the creators are getting with stories with moments like these. Another stand out final page closes the chapter on this book & readers will be electrified to check out the next issue.

Overall, the adventure of Dudley Datson is just beginning and its’ enthusiastic journey is one not to miss. Snyder, Igle and company push the imagination boundaries with a thrilling chapter that is sure to please. The adventure is just beginning so make sure not to miss out on the latest issue when it drops on Comixology Originals .

For this entry, we’re checking out a companion piece for the “Charge To 100” in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Universe by Boom Studios. Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 by Paul Allor, Kath Lobo, Anna Kekovsky Chandra, Fabi Marques, Sara Antonellini, Sharon Marino and Ed Dukeshire shows a spotlight on The Death ranger, who’s playing a big role in the monumental Might Morphin Power Rangers #100 coming in September. With so much story line involving this character, getting a deeper story on this mysterious figure will help compliment the future anniversary issue coming in late September. Let’s take a deeper look at this issue and see what’s happening here, shall we?

Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 - On Sale August 31st

The issue opens up with Maavi telling Young Andros and Young Zhane, who are both heavily featured in the Power Rangers book by Ryan Parrott and Marco Renna, a bedtime story. She is telling them the story of Spa’ark, the Gold Omega ranger. That story begins with the Omega Rangers taking care of Sister Supernova, a figure that poes a far greater danger than they realize. After neutralizing the threat, they bring Supernova back to Safehaven. During the down time, Spa’ark has a conversation with Haza, another ranger on the team. Haza brings up Spa’ark’s isolation and possible reasons why. Unfortunately, they don’t get to finish that conversation as Supernova escapes and does the unthinkable: kills Haza in the escape.

Feeling responsible for what happened, Spa’ak embarks on a dangerous path trying to fix this wrong. With another threat arising, Spa’ark does some questionable acts, including working with the Galactic Maw, who is up to no good. . How does this play into the creation of the Death Ranger? Can Spa’ark fix things or will he only make them worse? What will his teammates do about these actions? How does this tie into current times? Readers will have all those answers and a great final page to tie everything up before returning to the “Charge To 100” run.

This issue is a great companion piece to what’s going on in the present time of Power Rangers. Allor gives a nice spin on telling the Death ranger’s origin. Having this told to the kid versions of Andros and Zhane is a great touch to explain what is happening here. The story flows with a steady pace with giving the readers enough time to figure out what’s happening. This works well for new readers to the lore as there’s enough of a guide to steer them into who is who and what is happening. The overall story caps everything up and leaves readers with a final parting shot that echos in previous books to tie things together.

The art teams did solid work here as well. Bringing the range of emotions out of Spa’ark helped draw readers to his point of view and desperate actions. Once the tragedy strikes, the issue hits its’ high notes as it shifts gears in bringing Spa’ark’s plans front and center. The panels show a great deal of emotions with what is happening in the latter half of the book. There’s a lot to break down with how we see the Death Ranger emerge but it’s brought to the readers’ attention without being distracting to where a new reader could become confused easily.

Overall, Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 provides noteworthy details to enhance the story in the overall books leading to the “Charge To 100” anniversary issue. The creative team make this very enjoyable for new and old readers alike. Make sure to check it out at the local comic shop this week.

Edwin Slaughter has been sent to investigate a series of bodies washing up to a camp site in Lake Michigan. Edwin has been sent by the Order of St. George due to his unique perspective for looking at things. So far, his journey hasn’t yielded too many wins thus far, but he appears to have a plan to finally figure out what is going on here. Now stuck adrift at sea with Hermes, his brush companion, Edwin plots his next move in searching out the mystery at the campsite.

This issue kicks off with Edwin and Hermes still lost at sea. They’re talking next possible moves. Edwin feels that the House isn’t looking to rescue them but banking on that they will send someone in to solve the case and clean things up without a trace. However, during this monologue, Edwin starts to break down what is happening here. Readers see a great insight to what he’s envisioning. It’s quite the theory but it’s right on the money for what’s happening.

From this stage, Edwin makes a play to finally solve this once and for all. The move is a bit riskier than we’ve seen thus far. However, that’s not the biggest shock readers will see in this issue. Using his artwork as a guide, Edwin begins to unlock something that might have been buried fr a reason. What is the big secret that might becoming unlocked? Will the pair survive at sea? Readers will need to get this issue quickly to get those answers.

Edwin’s story really takes some surprise twists with this issue. His journey into solving this mystery has been something very intriguing to watch unfold. The writing has been showcasing how he perceives the world around him as a focal point and it still feels fresh and new reading. Once Edwin figures out what he thinks is behind all this, readers get a very catching explanation. However, what will get the most buzz from this issue is the final chapter of Edwin cyphering what is happening. The flashback trip explains much that has been building over the course of this arc. This book never ceases to bring readers new perspectives and it’s been a win thus far with no signs of slowing down.

The art stands out for another strong performance. Seeing the world thru Edwin’s eyes continues to complement the story being told. The use of how Edwin looks at his artwork to having the flashback moments really added some gravity to what has been his assignment all along. Even the subtle look of Edwin’s purple eyes adds to how he looks at the world differently. This book hits all the major points to building towards the climax of what Edwin is looking for. Impressive work as ever.

Overall, House of Slaughter #8 continues to build a new world thru Edwin Slaughter’s eyes. Strong storytelling and art progress the story into a new direction. This book has a vibe all its’ own and is one to be on the radar when you hit the local comic shop this week!

For this entry, we’re chcking out a new book under the Comixology Originals line via New Wave Comics. If New Wave comics and Comixology together sound familiar, it’s because you might know The Black Ghost, which is another great book out on this line and it’s season 2 starts this week as well. Blood Oath #1 by Rob Hart, Alex Segura, Joe Eisma, Hilary Jenkins, Jim Campbell, and Heather Antos has a very cool concept: vampires in the prohibition times. Let’s take a longer look at this debut issue and see what’s going on here, shall we?

The story centers around Hazel Crenshaw and the farm that she runs with her younger sister Geraldine in Staten Island of the 1920’s. What appears to be “small town” energy turns out to have a secret from most going on. Hazel is shipping alcohol out of the farm, which is against the law during this time. Prohibition (sale of alcohol is illegal) is running wild during this time. Surviving by selling in this era is crucial to keeping the lights on at the farm. However, when dealing with the dangers of prohibition, protection is needed. Hazel is confronted by Frankie about more muscle and product but they have an unexpected visitor crash their conversation.

Walt, Geraldine’s boyfriend returns to the farm bloodied and beaten. Walt tells the tale of the ill fated walk the pair was doing when they were attacked by some supernatural individuals that have a vested interest in the product on the farm. Supernatural might be an understatement as readers see a vampire gang attack the pair. How will this factor into Hazel’s plans moving forward? Is she ready for the fight when it's brought to her front door? Readers will get some answers and more raised by the time the issue is completed.

Solid debut issue. Hart and Segura are blending in a lot of elements with the concept here, which isn’t a bad thing. The issue’s strengths are seeing how Hazel reacts to the new threat at her doorstep. Considering the threats at hand, Hazel never falters and remains very calm (as one could be) with everything going on. The Vampire gang will be ones to watch. For making a more brief appearance, they hit the ground running to establish why they’re going to be cause for concern moving forward. Pacing moved things along quickly that never felt super rushed. There’s a lot more questions to be answered moving forward, but this series made a concrete base to work from.

The art captured the time period it was in very well. Eisma presented the horror with the action sequences to give the story a solid look. Never did it feel like things were toned down as a few vampire kills were gory enough to illustrate how dangerous they were. None drove a bigger point home than one last kill in this issue. Hazel’s conversations were also memorable in seeing how she is adjusting to the element of business she’s now apart of. It balanced out the overall story going on and set a nice tempo for where things are heading.

Overall, Blood Oath #1 hits the ground running with a great first issue. Mixing in the supernatural with modern history times is a fresh concept that should lock readers in for the series run. The creative team presents a very fascinating story that will only get more wild as it progresses (and that’s not a bad thing either). Make sure to check this book out on Comixology this week!

For this entry, we’re looking at the penultimate issue of one of the most creative books on the Comixology Originals line. The All-Nighter #9 by Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, and Aditya Bidikar shapes up the story for one amazing conclusion. If or whatever reason haven’t checked the story out yet, the first chapter is available in print form via Dark Horse Comics. Let’s take a closer look at how the second chapter is heading everyone’s favorite diner team into its finale, shall we?

The All-Nighter #9- On Sale August 30th

Last we saw our vampire group from the Diner, things were looking very bleak. Cynthia has been leading the family since Ian’s disappearance & it has not been an easy road. Joy, the “youngest” of the family took off to reconnect with her real family. That move didn’t go over as good as Joy had hoped. Alex, the “teenage hero” has been trying his best to continue being a super hero, but that has strained much including his relationship with Andrea, a former police officer. Lastly, Ian, who was the leader of this group was imprisoned by Lazaruk, who seeks to take over by posing as “The Justice Angels”, to sneak attack the public on their way to conquer.

This issue picks up with Cynthia working with “Francis” (aka Frankenstein) to free Ian from Lazaruk’s hold. It’s an interesting dynamic but with the stakes this high, alliances are formed to hopefully save the day. Will this duo save Iam beofre it’s too late? Meanwhile, Lazaruk has confronted Joy about joining his regime With the offer of not hiding in shadows as a prize, Joy listens. She is shown Lazaruk’ operation and has many questions. All the while, Alex is investigating Lazaruk as well. Unfortunatly as Alex tries helping someone, Lazaruk and the Justice Angels find him. What will happen now? Can the diner team stop Lazaruk? Will someone not make it until the end? Readers will need to read this issue and find out!

Zdarsky has everything moving very fast heading to the final issue. Lazaruk unveiling his plan and seemingly ready for the opposition was a fun read. From this entire second run, he has been a character making moves but with the end near, Lazaruk has taken his actions up a few notches. The dynamic between Cynthia and Francis was another great element of the story. There is a great moment where the mythos is flipped a bit to show a different side to the character. Every major player had their page-time without feeling rushed or forced. With a finale looming, this should be something special to watch.

Loo continues to design big moments for this final arc. Seeing Francis unleashed as what happened when he tried freeing Ian was out of normal character but illustrated to the reader how high the stakes are for this mission. Seeing the encounter between Lazaruk and Alex was a great introduction to what is coming next issue. Seeing Lazaruk’s plan start to roll will add much more impact for the big closing.

Overall, The All-Nighter #9 sets up the chessboard for a resounding exclamation point for this story. Zdarsky, Loo and company position all the major players for a final confrontation that readers should be counting down the days to read. Make sure to check this out at Comixology this week.

For this entry, The next wave of “Scottober” books via Best Jackett Press shows no signs of a sophomore slump as they have a sure-fire smash on their hands in the form of BarnStormers by Scott Snyder, Tula Lotay, Dee Cunniffe and Richard Starkings. The first issue was a fantastic debut introducing readers into the world of Hawk Baron and his “partner” Tillie. Barnstormers #2 just dropped on Comixology Originals, and this story is one you won’t be able to pass over reading. Let’s take a deeper dove into this issue and see what’s going on, shall we?

Barnstormers #2 - On August 30th

When we last saw Hawk E. Baron aka Bix, a former WW1 pilot who’s paying the rent check by performing aerial tricks, took an unexpected turn. Thinking he was finally going to hit a big score, Baron couldn’t hav worse luck. After crashing a wealthy family’s wedding party (literally), Hawk has become a wanted man due to his unexpected partner, Tillie. After she helps Hawk escape the Carlyle property, Tillie hops in Baron’s plane and the pair fly away. Little do they know what lies ahead for them.

This issue jumps in where the pair finally lands after such a dramatic escape. Tillie offers Baron a parting offer as she plans her next move. The move? Crash a wealthy party and steal some food to start. Baron reluctantly goes along after hearing Tillie’s story. In a mix of divine intervention and living in the moment, Tillie divulges to Baron how the wedding wasn’t one of love but of financial convenience as The Carlyles were putting pressure on her family for their land. In her words, When Baron arrived, she took it as a a sign to run. Meanwhile, her former fiancee is making plans of his own to get Tillie and Baron, in the form of Zeke West. Readers get a quick background of him during this issue which is very solid.

From this moment, readers are shown a side of Baron that hasn’t been shown before. What is his big secret? The story shifts back to seeing how Baron becomes more involved in Tillie’s plans. How does the pair escalate things? It’s a perfect set-up for shifting gears in the story and one fans can’t help but become fully entrenched with for the next chapter.

Brilliant issue. Snyder hits two big points in this issue that will grab readers attention for a double take. The first one is Baron’s secret. When the reveal is done, it will catch readers off guard for it’s only in a a quick moment. If you go back and re-read issue #1, you can see how it fits in with a few panels there as well. It also adds another layer into his character. Since we’ve been introduced to Hawk E. Baron, he’s come across as an unlucky pilot trying to find his way. With this revelation, the latter half of the issue carries more weight.

The second big point is Tillie’s endgame. When she explains her motives for leaving the Carlyles, she appears to be a sympathetic character. This changes quickly as they attended the Rollinger party. The further they work thru the party, it becomes clear Tillie has had some plans in motion the entire time. How that fits in the overall story will be such a fun read.

Absolutely stunning art by Lotay and Cunniffe. There was one moment that really stood out to me for being so creative and subtle at the same time. There is a scene where Zeke is getting hired by the Carlyles. How Lotay and Cunniffe crafted the sunlight hitting the window blinds to create the striped shadows came off well. It added a unique feel to the scene. Mixing in the imagery of the Rollinger family business to this time period was great as well. Without spoiling too much, the visions Bix sees here feel to play a bigger factor down the road. Excellent final page to close out this chapter.

Overall, Barnstormers #2 delivers on a fantastic read that readers will be locked in on from the opening page. Snyder, Lotay and company present a multi-layered dive into the unlikely pair and their dangerous adventures. Excellent storytelling and phenomenal art will make this a must-add for your reading list! Don’t delay picking it up.

One of the best new series of 2022 continues its epic debut story arc with another must-read issue! Grim #4 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano for Boom Studios has been an absolute smash since it debuted in the local comic shops. Last issue left readers with a final page that raised many questions. How does this latest issue fare? Let’s take a deeper dive and see, shall we?

Grim #4- On Sale August 24th

The saga of Jessica Harrow continues to take some very exciting turns. After a routine job of guiding a dead soul into the afterlife as a reaper goes sideways, her (after)life has been turned upside down. After somehow crossing over into the land of the living, Jessica starts searching for answers. None of which her boss Adira is happy with. With Adira trying to stop her search for the truth, Jessica and her friends make an escape from The End, who is trying to silence this situation once and for all.

This issue jumps in (literally) with Jessica’s team making a leap from a tower to escape The End. During their free fall, The Scythe she wields opens up a portal. Where that portal leads: Las Vegas! Meanwhile, Adira assesses the situation and determines Jessica has Death’s Scythe! She sends The End to find her in Vegas. While in Vegas, Jessica somehow saves a drunken party-goer from being killed. However, that interaction turns out to be more than it seems. What happens that changes the course for Jessica? It’s a surprise that will have fans talking along with a final chapter of the issue that sets events in motion.

The story of Jessica Harrow keeps taking such great twists, all thanks to the incredible writing of Phillips. Jessica’s world is one that never feels predictable and always keeps things exciting. The mystery of who she is has been great to follow. This issue shines when she makes the save on the party-goer. Jessica shows why there’s something more to her with her heroic actions. This issue focused more on the journey’s of both Jessica and Adira, which is no a bad thing. It gave Jessica moments to dive into her own mystery. On the flip-side, Adira, while not featured heavily, made the most of the time on page. The pace kept things moving and will invest readers from the opening page to close. Excellent job.

This book has such a unique feel to it, all thanks to Flaviano & the rest of the art team. It always has panels that pop right off the page. None bigger this issue then when Jessica makes the save. This vision of Las Vegas also sands out thanks to the coloring work of Renzi. When there, it stands out with its use of pink/purple as a backdrop to the strip. Readers can’t help but be locked into its surroundings. As someone who’s visited Vegas many times, this felt like the energy you see when you’re in Sin City. The final panels put a solid exclamation point on this issue!

Overall, Grim #4 proves why this book is an absolute can’t miss. Phillips, Flaviano and company continue to make one of the coolest books on the market with the work being put in here. The story of Jessica Harrow keeps getting better and better so make sure you stop down to your LCS this week and get this book!

MAGIC: Ajani Goldmane #1 by Seanan McGuire, Nori Retherford, Jaques Salomon, Giuseppe Cafaro, Lea Caballero, Michael Shelfer and Ed Dukeshire is a one shot story that is perfect for new readers to check out. Let’s see how this issue presents one of the more popular characters in the MTG landscape, shall we?

Now MTG is not one of my stronger fandoms of knowledge so I made a call to Rich from the 3FNpodcast, who is very well versed in the MTG lore. Rich said “Ajani is one of the most beloved Planeswalkers in all of magic. Magic players who wield white mana decks or Orhov decks will always make room for a good Ajani.”

This issue starts off with Ajani looking over Naya, his territory, when he is suddenly attacked by Jazal. However this turns out to be an illusion of sorts as the story shifts to the Naya Shard of Alara. Ajani finds out that some of his nieces and nephews are playing a game based off of a story of lore. Once aware of the story, Ajani decides to clear up some confusion and tell the children a story: What it really means to be a Planeswalker.

Readers are taken on a fun story with “The Tale Of The Endless Hunger” as Ajani and his friend Tamiyo help the people of Eldraine survive a threat. The story isn’t enough for the children so Ajani tells another tale called “The Story Of Shadows upon Stone.” With the children being still restless for more excitement, Ajani finally tells his story of Jazal in “The Tale Of The Lucky Hunt.” Readers will have much to enjoy with this issue and get treated to a solid epilogue to close.

As previously mentioned, I’m not the biggest Magic: The Gathering expert, but I really thought this was a cool read. McGuire does an excellent job introducing Ajani to readers of the various levels of fandom. Breaking the stories of Ajani into three small stories was a nice touch and showcased why this character is so beloved. Each story felt different but carried an overall theme. Pacing was never lost and seeing how Ajani interacted in telling his stories made for an enjoyable read.

The art teams did a stellar performance throughout this issue. Having various artists on the 3 small stories made each one feel unique. “The Tale Of The Lucky Hunt” really jumped out with the action sequences, even with how brief they were. The artists kept things moving along with nothing feeling too rushed. There was a lot of ground to cover and the creative team as a whole delivered on a read that will be very pleasing to Magic: The Gathering Fans.

Overall, MAGIC: Ajani Goldmane #1 is a great introduction to a fabled character in the MTG universe. New readers will enjoy the heroic moments that connect on the first read thanks to the exceptional work from the creative teams. More seasoned fans will be happy with how this character came across when they pick this issue up at the LCS this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. For this entry, we’re checking out the next chapter in one of the most anticipated books coming out from Valiant Entertainment. Obviously, there has been a lot of speculation of what Valiant’s future holds after reports of rumored trouble and uncertainty emerged. Valiant has issued a public statement which gives an idea of what to expect over the next few months.

That said, Book Of Shadows #2 by CULLEN BUNN, VICENTE CIFUENTES, NICK FILARDI, and DAVE SHARPE is slated to hit the local comic shops this week before returning in January. Let’s waste no more time and see where things are heading in this latest installment, shall we?

Shadowman, Persephone, Dr. Mirage, PUNK MAMBO, and the Eternal Warrior have been brought together to try stopping Exarch Fane on his deadly and destructive attack on Earth, dubbed “The Dark Feast”. Fane is carrying the Book Of Shadows, a dark and mysterious weapon, with him and our team is finally ready to make a play to stop him once and for all.

The team opens up with an all out attack on Fane. Much to their disappointment, Fane is taking their best shots and brushing them off. His big equalizer is the Book Of Shadows itself. From the powerful item, Fane summons an army of creatures to defend him. Left with no other choice, the team of heroes makes a hasty retreat, leaving Fane to attack others.

During their retreat, The Eternal Warrior divulges more into the history of Exarch Fane. What secrets are revealed here? What is a big reveal surrounding he Book? The team makes a call with all the information that sends them into a few directions with no easy roads to victory. Even with the long wait, the final panel will leave readers something to remember until we revisit this story in 2023 (hopefully sooner).

Bunn delivers on a very action packed issue while slowly revealing why Exarch Fane might be the impossible foe to stop. It’s a great balance of storytelling. The dynamic between the “team” is what jumps out most from this issue. The personalities involved here are not ones built for teamwork. From his run on Shadowman, Bunn established Jack Boniface struggles with working with others. With the stakes even higher, this point is brought to the forefront. Punk Mambo steals some panels with great one-liners. Once the team “decides” on a plan, it sets up for what should be a very enjoyable third issue.

Cifuentes continues ti impress with this series. The action sequences pop off the pages with a great attention to detail. This is something I look for when dealing with team books. There is also a great 2 page spread explaining Exarch Fane’s history with the Eternal Warrior. How the pages are made up gave it a very unique look to separate form the actual story. Even with the more quieter explanation moments with the characters, the art generates the severity of Fane’s action during this points in the story. There’s much to enjoy with this issue.

Overall, Book of Shadows #2 continues to make some noise with the story being told within these pages. Bunn and Cifuentes are presenting Valiant’s most reluctant team with solid storytelling and fantastic art. If this is truly the end till 2023, the book heads into hiatus on a high note. Make sure to check this out at the LCS this week.
