It leads into a thunderous closing sequence.

This builds off the book’s strongest points: the character changes in the supporting cast. The dynamic between Wayne and Alfred is uneasy but offers a solid exchange. It is not the surreal “card game” seen earlier in the chapter. Readers will do a few double takes as seeing Bruce hang out with his “friends” feels different but mirrors the new stat quo.

Even with changes, Snyder’s writing brings out the classic Bat overtones like no one else. It leaves a massive impression as where things lead now is wide open. The only certainty is the imaginative take wins another round in its’ growing legacy.

Dragotta and Martin pull no punches with Batman’s fighting. The altercation at the Aquarium intensifies with each panel. How Batman uses his cape continues to steal panels. Readers will be impressed with a half page image that showcases the Bat watching overhead. This gets quickly upstaged by a skyscraper becoming a warning to the city. Its a fantastic panel that reflects the new stat quo of Bruce Wayne.

In-between the action, the more subtle moments of Bruce’s life win over readers. The card game carries a more light feel (even though business is brought up). The story doesn’t take long to get back to the full throttle action. In the closing events, a full page image of an iconic mobile takes an all new twist catapulting readers into the story’s next phase.

Two issues in and the world of Bruce Wayne has never been more complex and explosive. Snyder’s writing shifts gears to bringing the detective side of business into the forefront. A Legacy reborn. An elite fighting force has returned. With a history crossing overing into pop culture via live action and animation, G.I. JOE has entertained fans for decades. In its’ latest comic incarnation, it is one-third of a new trinity. Along with Void Rivals and Transformers, G.I. Joe centers the Energon Universe of Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics.

Spiraling from the pages of November 2023’s Transformers #2, the build-up began. What followed were four limited series spotlighting fan-favorites. Each carried its’ own distinct theme and had the fanbase demanding more. Almost a year later, the wait is finally over!

Talk about making a statement! Williamson gives both new and seasoned readers much to rave about with this chapter. The opening segment works to establish the initial team as they enter this new era. Using Duke as a narrator gives a unique perspective as to how he sees each member. The result instantly connects with the audience. In comparison, the COBRA introduction is more subtle and gives just enough to understand their motivations.

One character that looks to play a much bigger role is Risk. The brief welcome leaves quite the impression. Once that is completed, the pace picks up with no looking back. Williamson hits the gas as the action bolsters into high gear. The closing act brings out the best and worst of an inexperienced team. Stakes have been raised and just wait for what unfolds on the final page! It is a hell of a mic drop.

Reilly and Bellaire steps back into the Joe world after an incredible run on DUKE. The team welcomes readers with a two page splash. From here, members get introduced with present and past panels. The flashback sequences pop with Bellaire’s coloring throughout the issue. It delivers on some insight and reminisce on the past series.

Once panels shift to COBRA, the mood changes. The brooding evil slowly emerges. It caps off with a near full page image of the Commander testing a new weapon. Closing that moment is a smaller but impactful panel of the Commander celebrating. The art team also welcomes Risk into the fold with a great action packed portion of the book.

The calm before the storm is greeted with a fantastic two page spread of Duke and Destro. This launches into the final act. No punches (or shots) are pulled as the intensity ramps back up. There are many incredible action images to have readers excited. Events conclude with a show stopping final page that throws everything in flux. The full page image is sure to keep fans on edge until the next chapter drops guaranteed!

Brombal focuses the conflict on the strained family relationship moreso than the actual fight. Shiva and Cain have a very complex history. The writing pushes this into the spotlight. Their uneasiness creates more tension as the attacks play out. Seeing Cain’s reluctancy to trust Shiva allows readers to watch every move with heightened worry.

The story escalates at a very high pace. There is plenty of action to tide over readers. It becomes the main driver as Shiva keeps Cain questioning her motives. Even when there are small breaks in the action, the story doesn’t take long to ramp it back up. The final page sets off events for an explosive turn of events as Cassandra Cain braces for the storm forthcoming.

Miyazawa and Spicer deliver on fast-paced action. The opening stand-off page sets the tone for the forthcoming fighting. With an incredible two-page splash, events are set off. Even with a prequel, nobody has mastered the craft of “slow burn drama” like James Tynion IV. A simple case morphs into an introduction for a debuting threat. The conversation between Sarah and Victor brings forth many avenues for drama. Sarah’s recap of events plays into the foundation of Erica’s drive. It is capped off by a subtle panel of Sarah hugging Erica. At this moment, readers watch as Erica lets her guard down just enough to be “normal”. It’s a side rarely seen. Readers watch a break in her armor form but not for too long.

Pacing keeps the emotions running high all chapter. The remainder of the hunt plays into familiar territory. Erica handles her business before getting the call for the next case. Once the attention is back on Sarah and Victor, Tynion finally dishes a cold response to Sarah’s impactful support of Erica. The fallout drops a big reveal as readers find themselves wrapped up in the chaotic landscape of the Order of St. George. With a superb cliffhanger, the sins of the past might find their way into the present timeline. Can Erica hope t survive? Only time will tell.

Dell’edera and Muerto continue to balance the build and create exciting panels for this special issue. The flashback sequences pop right off the page. With Muerto’s excellent coloring, the scenes come across as warm and feature Erica in a new sense. The full page image of Erica hugging Sarah is an easy connect with readers.

It plays off the multi panel pages of Victor and Sarah recapping. The art paints him as a charismatic being looking for details. With each page, readers can feel the tension building around Victor. These moments are briefly overshadowed by a two page conclusion to the flashback. The “feel good” moment is short lived as Victor comes to the end of this questions. His response speaks volumes of his character. With the final two pages, it becomes crystal clear of how imposing he will become in the present. The use of shading in the closing panel sells readers on what lies ahead as year 6 begins for the Boom! Studios franchise.

The prequel mission before Archer’s Peak hits many emotions as SIKTC delivers another fantastic read. Tynion’s slow burn writing keeps readers locked in wy before the last pages. Legends. It is a word that gets thrown around quite often. Few times does the word encompass what it’s attached to. In the case of DC’s first superhero team, that is the only way to describe them. Alan Scott. Jay Garrick. Ted Grant. Definitions of true timeless heroics.

The Justice Society of America have been fighting the good fight since the days of World War II. Since then, the team has adapted through the years without loosing itself in beliefs. It has also encompassed a family sense with many legacy heroes filling in the ranks. How does the team fare now in the new stat quo of “All In”?

JSA #1 by Jeff Lemire, Diego Olortegui, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) looks to provide those answers in much more with its’ re-entry into the DCU.

Lemire takes the team to task with the latest installment. At its’ core, the heroic ethics of the team remain unchanged by the eras they fight in. With the fallout of Amanda Waller’s actions in “Absolute Power”, they appear to be the most challenged. This new perspective is clearly seen in the writing of Obsidian.

The hero’s overly aggressive nature is a stark contrast from the team’s more grounded nature. It provides opposition to Jade. Her leadership as the new chair is questioned. The fight to stay true to form proves to be a difficult task. Other members are split on where they side. Where the elder members would handle this quickly, the younger generation are filled with emotional outbursts.

Readers do see a quick glimpse of the veteran lineup but they have their hands filled with a true threat. This doesn’t stop Lemire from throwing in a big swerve with the close. Readers watch as the final page drops a strong cliffhanger for the classic team to conquer.

Olortegui and Guerrero catch readers up to speed with a quick synopsis of the team with the opening pages. A near pull page image showcases the original lineup in action. Once the story swings into present day, Obsidian demonstrates his powers with a big two page splash. This sets the tone for the emotional wear the team carries. Adapting to the current hostile state proves to be a stronger adversary than realized.

The classic team gets in the action with a few key panels. Readers watched as the heroes fall into familiar territory with the action, A two page splash involving Dr. Fate amps up the danger before returning to present. Events conclude with a full page panel that will have fans excited to see what happens next. This is JSA storytelling 101.

It carries the uneasiness of this new stat quo. Batman has at least one ally he can trust: Commissioner Gordon. Seeing the two work the case never shies away from that vintage partnership established many years ago.

The case throws many notable Batman rogues into the mix. It leads to Batman trying to keep composure with a swayed public. With the “Villains” running the city, Bruce Wayne struggles for control. The writing never falters on raising the tense emotions surrounding the case. This leads to a show-stopping closing act. Zdarsky throws one hell of a twist to conclude events for now. It will leave readers curious about how things will ever be the same again.

Di Giandomenico steps in for art duties (Morey remained on colors) and wastes little time with the drama flare. The investigation amps up Batman’s intensity as he starts forming his plan. Riddler’s dinner party opens with a great “wine glass” panel perspective. It spirals into a series of action as Batman has to fight more than just the bad guys.

Wayne’s reaction to reveals also plays a key part due to the art. The strain of how the case is out of reach boils over. This leads into a near riot in front of a medical clinic. Seeing the anger pour out of Bruce (not Batman) makes a statement. The art’s intensity hits its’ apex with the final pages. As panels reveal a shocking truth, the closing panel will have readers floored to what they have just witnessed. Brace for a monster reaction with this issue.

Aaron digs into Superman being the symbol more than the man for this opening chapter. The backstory of Krypton paints a very distinct notion. Being considered lower class forges the house of El. The writing has set them up as the common citizen rather than the elite of the planet’s society. It reflects how Superman is seen in many eyes. They both represent Truth, Justice and a better tomorrow.

Once events shift back to Earth, the story beigns to move swiftly. Aaron sets up Kal-El as a hero questioning his actions. The uncertainty of his motives adds to an already complex character. Once danger strikes the small Brazilian town he is in, the true hero readers know comes out. The writing debuts Superman in a grand way. The only downside is it is short lived, but with good reason. Other characters crash the party flipping everything on its’ axis. It leads to a teasing close as a new era has launched without question.

Sandoval and Arreola depicts Krypton as a soul crushing environment pending the status. The Els are shown to be making their best efforts to survive the looming odds. A two page spread clearly states the divide in classes. It also droves home the meaning of the “S” symbol. Another two page splash shows an all too familiar fate for Krypton as the unraveling of secrets begins.

Once on Earth, Kal-El’s journey is hidden behind panels showcasing the struggles at hand. The wait isn’t too long as a full page panel welcomes in the Man of Tomorrow into the good fight. Action images capture the classic feel of Superman stories. This leads into a unique full page with Carey’s lettering setting up a catching panel. The aftermath is filled with shocking surprises while ushering readers to the close. Ince the final page hits, the art displays a haunting look as time is fleeting for happiness. It’s an excellent showcase for a debut tale.

The latest entree into the Absolute Universe makes its’ own path while maintaining the Superman mystique. Aaron presents an emerging hero’s journey with strong writing. Sandoval, Arreola and Carey craft the visuals of two worlds composing what will utimately become the greatest symbol of hope in a dark universe.

Loo has taken some bold swings with this current run. Taking a trip to the Savage Land is another case of pushing Russell into uncharted waters. The interactions with Ka-Zar provides a fresh challenge. Even Zabu can’t escape the wrath of the Werewolf.

When the story shifts to the Hood’s plans, there is a slower pace for readers to follow. It’s a more low key build, maximizing the deceit in question. Once the final pages kick in, the payoff finishes with a solid close. Both parts run equal enough to give an enjoyable read.

The art flourishes when the story hits the Savage Land. Davina’s take is filled with big panels. Seeing Russell take down a Tyranosauros Rex is a big statement for the readers. They will also have a reaction with Zabu’s involvement.

Its fallout shows off Ka-Zar’s skills. The fight is brutal and everything one would want with this standoff. In comparison, the Hood story panels stay steady in keeping the methodical pace of the story. Only when the last page hits does the image jump at readers. It’s an image showing that the story is very far from over.

Jack Russell’s trip to the Savage Land is complicated to say the least. Loo’s writing balances the savage action and slow drama. Davina and the team lean into the brutal new landscape to create a new experience for the cursed crusader. There is never a dull moment with this series.

The confrontation becomes less than cordial. Events go from bad to worse as Silk’s “supporters” unite. The action picks up as a spy is tries gaining intel. What follows next continues the path of putting personal choices ahead of the overall good. The result leads to more fun match-ups of classic characters with the backdrop of a world broken. Readers are left with a closing image setting the stage for a bigger conflict to finally unfold.

The art delivers a big debut for a classic pair of “hereos”. The near full page shot of Quantum and Woody welcomes them into the conflict in their own way. Seeing the formation of Silk’s Supporters tips off some great action panels. Faith’s struggle to fight the onslaught conveys the dramatic impact of Silk’s promises. This builds towards a greater lead-in to the overall situation. Closing the book is a defiant splash page that sets the tone for the big fight forthcoming.

The side story with Azamor art reflects the human aspect of Silk’s deeds. Its’ imagery is very grounded as the violence starts escalating. Events lead to a fever pitch as a turn in events mirrors the dark side of the beliefs that Silk has been selling. It offers a great counterpoint to the heroes’ flawed conflict.

The “doctor” visit solidifies Katse’s drive to make sure he is never looked upon as broken. This leads to an uncomfortable conversation with Leader X. Seeing Katse lie and dodge to X’s questioning makes a loud statement.

This energy carries over into the revenge acts. Orlando wirtes Katse at his most dangerous. Readers watch as Kaste’s cold persona fuels his heated attacks. From here, the end game begins. With his enemies reeling, Katse sets the stage for the final showdown. Pacing sets events up quickly without missing a beat. This connects with readers eagerly waiting for Katse to unleash the full extent of his vengeance.

Qualano steps in for art duties and gives Skywolf a big entrance to the Lobos after her actions. The intensity builds with the near full page of Leader X screaming for Katse. Unfortunately for him, Katse is getting worked on via a simple but loud panel. TThe full page image of Katse covering his tracks sets forth the final road to revenge. This starts with a fun classic Superman suit change with a twist. What follows next is prime superhero themes that forever remain timeless.

Using the Atomic Skull as the lead-in villain shows off Lois’s skills. Williamson writes her as a determined hero ready to seize the day. The back and forth between the Kents eases readers into the huge return. Knowing the big bad here, it is a true challenge that Lois showcases a quick range of emotions. Williamson throws a big curve in with the Time Trapper during this point. His appearance leads to the mind-blowing final page. There is no doubt fans will have MUCH to say about this shocking reveal.

DAN MORA. Does anything need to be said after that? The artwork is incredible as always. A fantastic two page splash shows off a horrific future where Superman appears to run out of time. This speeds back to the present where Mora and Sanchez capture the Superman movie feel with vintage Daily Planet panels. This concludes with a fun sequence of costume change rolling into another fantastic two page image.

Action flows at a high speed and never lets the readers go. When you think “Superman”, this issue delivers on it. Another striking two page image welcomes in the true bad to the story. Lois’ reactions are subtle but spike up the drama. At this stage, the story changes lanes into the Trapper close. The chapter finishes its’ time with an unforgettable final full page. There’s no way anyone sees that and doesn’t immediately have a reaction!

It is a moment that shows room to grow as the story plays out.

The side plot with Scarlett and the wealthy cheating death leans into a side of Wayne doesn’t like to live: augmentation. This proves for an internal struggle as the code he’s built now comes into question. Seeing the trepidation with events plays up well heading to the closing act. With the spotlight back on Thomas Wayne, the close drops quite the surprise. “No good deed goes unpunished” has never been more true with Taylor’s close. It will have readers shocked with the final panel. Talk about making a first impression.

This directly sets the X-leader on a path towards confronting Sarah. Seeing how Rogue has evolved into the primary leader of the X-teams has been such a strength of this book. Cyclops should take notes.

The confrontation between Rogue and Sarah is one that doesn’t hold back. Sarah’s back story (including the Xavier interlude) is fueled by pain and loss. This is countered by Rogue showing another strength she has: compassion. It drives her to try appeasing the challenge but with little success. In the background, the Outliers story progresses as a nice break in-between Rogue’s fight. This spirals into the close where the team braces for a stand they have no business surviving. Since the jump, this has been THE X-book everyone has talked about for a reason. This issue solidifies that winning streak with another excellent chapter.

Marquez and Wilson hit readers with a powerful full page image that they won’t forget anytime soon. A bloodied and broken Wolverine ushers in the main portion of the book. Rogue’s worry and Nightcrawler’s calm demeanors add more layers to what unfolds next.

Rogue’s confrontation with Sarah is a fantastic throwdown. The action panels move with a solid pace. Even when Sarah’s back story drops in, it takes nothing away from the viciousness of the fight. Cowles’ lettering puts a huge exclamation point on the showdown. From here, the art shifts to the X-Men’s stand-off. The outliers panels rally the readers for what is coming. Factor in an incredible full page parting shot to send this book home and the art team drops another great issue onto fans.

Rogue’s showdown with Sarah Gaunt goes off with much excitement and drama in another must-read issue. Simone’s writing sets events off with no hesitation. The writing allows the heroes to dig into their dark sides while an unlikely hero steps in to save them. Robin becomes the teacher in keeping the heroes at bay long enough to get help. That comes in the form of one of DC’s greatest superhero teams.

The injection of the JSA throws a great dynamic into play. Readers watch as the team steps up to take down the finest. Waid dishes up a shocking way to try and free Batman from Eclipso’s clutches. It is a moment that will have fans’ attention. This leads into the closing portion of the chapter. Just when readers think they have some answers, Waid flips the situation to provide a strong cliffhanger until next time. There is a reason this series gets all the deserved praise it gets. It always showcases fantastic storytelling.

Gutiérrez and Bonvillain make an immediate impact with the opening pages. Eclipso’s return to Earth is greeted with a bold full page image of the possessed heroes. The following panel of the maniacal laughter strikes a chord with the audience. Eclipso looks every bit as an unhinged threat to take on all challengers.

On the other hand, the art depicts Robin as a frantic, concerned hero. This comes from witnessing the big two under Eclipso’s control. The sequence with Commissioner Gordon come across larger than life due to some JSA influence. Seeing the subtle change in the Bat-signal works as a defining moment of events changing.

Along with these pages, Robin’s big moment pops off the page due to Wands’ lettering. The panel makes a big statement and switches the course of the story. It leads into a ever-changing final act. Once here, a full page portrait of heroes says one thing. The following panels flip everything around as the final shot reminds everyone this fight is far from over.

John Stweart is all about handling the business at hand. Together, they take the story into higher ground.

The Guy Gardner and Durlans side-plots break up the straight forward pacing. Each add another layer of a fastly rising tale. The Durlans surprise helps to keep readers guessing. Knowing the stakes at hand, the writing teases a few possibilities. Ultimately, events swing back towards the heroics of the Lanterns. It builds up towards a solid closing act. Star Sapphire takes center stage before the chapter bows out with more drama on the horizon.

Xermánico and Fajardo Jr. display the full extent of Mogo’s actions with nothing held back. The loud two-page spread leaves a trail of destruction behind as the story flies into gear. Once the Lanterns head into action, the art reflects an energetic feel. It is filled with fast moving and direct panels.

Events build towards a strong two page image breaking down the moving parts. Two-Face is a perfect choice for this adventure. In dealing with true identities, Harvey Dent is as complex as Bruce Wayne. This reflects a line Batman says driving to Gotham. “Let Your True Self Be your disguise” works on all parties involved. Both Batman and Robin escape their pain via their alter egos. Through this, the pair heads right into action. Waid stages the conflict exceptionally. It flows with big action and brewing drama. The result leads to a great cliffhanger ending as the Duo’s first year has only just begun.

Samnee and Lopes lock readers in on the beginnings of a historic team. The opening two page splash ramps up on the surging moment. It’s followed up by panels spotlighting the difference in demeanors. Batman’s brooding is outmatched by Robin’s optimism. The fallout results in a full page image ushering the duo into action.

One element of this entire saga has been proving who was worthy of the mantle. Higgins and Clark give compelling cases for both leads. However, one stands out for these final two chapters. Where the initial chapter starts showing doubt, the writing allows for the closing chapter to echo what lies within a true hero: the will to find a way to win for others.

Both books move at a steady pace. There are plenty of surprises packed in both. Readers will enjoy both but let’s talk the closing issue.

In the course of Radiant Black, Higgins has thrown in a few notable heartbreaking moments. #30.5 pulls out all the stops in Massive-verse lore. The last conflict carries the big fight feel needed for an event. It never stops raising the tense consequences until its’ explosive end. In its’ wake is the heartbreaking resolution. Walking with Marshall and Nathan through the past 2 years, it delivers on closing one legacy and forging a new one ahead. The event departs with an uncertain future filled with possibilities. Absolutely incredible work.

The art teams bring the intensity and emotion for this finale. A full page splash sparks the final stand between Radiant Black and Premier. It is matched with a fantastic two page spread involving Wendell and Marshall. Readers watch as the action ramps up. The Massive-Verse family crashes the scene in dramatic fashion. It’s a dynamic shift going into the closing chapter.

With all the chaos around them, the art constructs the sense of true world shattering dangers. Premier’s attack leaves nothing behind as it builds towards the final stand. A full page image crashes everything. This leads to a eye-catching image leading to the fallout.

At this stage, the art brings out the final reveal of the prized mantle holder. It is filled with deep rooted friendship and one elevating into a new path. The parting image is perfect for what it needs to be: a closing of one door and the endless possibilities of another.

The writing doesn’t wait to start dropping big moments with the story. Seeing John Stewart have his hands full with a familiar face creates a high pace that rarely slows down. Considering the events of the United Planets and “Absolute Power”, the Lanterns have been tested greatly. Their latest challenge brings them to their breaking point!

The showdown with Thaaros conveys the drama that’s been building for months. Once the Dark Star ring comes into play, stakes are raised. The fallout shakes events up quite a bit. Nothing makes a Hal Jordan story better than when things go off the rails. It’s packed with big action and high drama. However, the final act is what catches the most attention. As a last play is made, the closing page delivers on one (last) return capping this off and leading to the next chapter.

Guy Gardner’s side mission delivers on another big return. It is complimented by Alan Scott crashing the party. Seeing all the Lanterns in the mix is a huge win for fans. The writing is focused on delivering an epic event. There is no mis-step taken here.

Larroca and Guerrero keep readers guessing with the returning characters. Stewart’s initial conflict carries a tremendous feel to the panels. This is largely in part to his returning co-star. Long time GL readers will appreciated who’s back. The art gives the character a near full page entrance. In its’ aftermath, the pages reflect on the desperate time at hand. Before going into action, there is a fantastic full splash showing the Lanterns in a new light: hopeful.

Two page splits construct the Thanagar face-off. Readers watch as the art team set the stage for a last hurrah. With a huge full page attack, Thaaros throws down the gauntlet. The following pages flood with drama and well timed breaks.

The art also brings another familiar face for the mid act. Seeing the Emerald Crusader make the showdown via full page panel is perfect. The art complements his conflict incredibly. Same can be said for Guy Gardner’s mission as well. Once the pages start winding down, One more full page introduction appears to close out an already impressive start for the GL corps event.

The final attempt to handle the United Planets starts the GL Corps off in the “All In” movement. Kennedy-Johnson and Adams balance out the bright spots and desperate hope for a thrilling start. Larroca and Guerrero take readers on a wild ride as the repowered army marches forward with their universes in the crossfire. This chapter sets the stage for a huge conflict brewing behind the emerald light.

The mystery behind who escaped the Phantom Zone leads into a great Superman and Supergirl sequence. It never felt like a moment was missed as Waid builds up the drama heading into the final act. At this stage, more clues are finally revealed as Superman makes a call. The result leads into a surprising closing page. If you are a fan of the classic hero tales, this one is sure to please.

Henry and Herms are on the call for art duties. The antagonists make a big debut with a loud full page splash. From here, the pages are filled with excellent back and forth between Jimmy and Clark. It provides just enough time to pause before the action comes in fast. The art team display the conflict with a huge sense of urgency.

Its’ fallout showcases the next phase in unlocking the mystery at hand. The art team conveys the feel of the classic Superman tales with each interaction with his team and Lois. The result leads to a fantastic final page. It's a cliffhanger that looks to be the tip of something special on the way.

The back-up Supergirl story dives in to a mission shrouded in mystery. Whenever the United Planets are involved, nothing is off limits. It sets the foundation with many questions following as something is off with Supergirl. Judging by the final page, it is a safe assessment Kara’s latest adventure is larger than anyone has realized.

Snyder returns to Gotham City with a bold new take on this initial chapter. Stripping away much of the lore of Bruce Wayne gives a very grounded lead. The one notable theme quickly picked up is there is more raw aggression behind his actions. It is a reflection of the world he lives in. This version of Gotham feels more unstable and unpredictable. Seeing classic characters retold in this lense provides a thrilling and complicated trip.

There are plenty of changes of traditional characters. Alfred Pennyworth is a grizzled agent. Killer Croc is Bruce’s childhood friend. The rogues gallery gets presented in very different ways. The story still has a Batman born from tragedy, but not the way one would think. Snyder is clearly having fun with the creativity while dancing around Gotham’s dangerous streets. Once the conflict kicks into gear, the writing shows a more violent Batman than has been seen in recent years. It caps off with a surprising showdown that doesn’t disappoint. This is an all new Batman that packs a rageful punch.

Dragotta and Martin make this version of Gotham stand out for many reasons. The flashback sequences mix the color schemes to camouflage the tragedy building. This plays well into the new origin story. Bruce Wayne comes across as an ordinary citizen. It is a big contrast to the playboy billionaire alter ego readers know.

Once the first rogue strikes, the art team crafts an uneasy encounter filled with unapologetic images. Black Mask and the Party Animals make an immediate statement. It’s met head on later with the imposing Batman unleashing his fury. The full page image of the Batman flying into action speaks volumes. It sets a high pace as each panel speeds through the chaos. Once events settle into the final act, the art keeps up the suspense. Flying into the close, the two page spread caps off a thrill ride that has miles to go before its’ end.

Scott Snyder’s return to Gotham takes readers on a brutally engaging start. The writing mixes up classic lore with a more modern feel. Its’ result never misses its’ mark with drama and suspense. Dragotta, Martin and Cowles leave readers in awe with the imagery of the new Dark Knight. If this is any indication of the rest of the Absolute Universe, fans are in for another epic journey.
