PHOENIX #1 by Stephanie Phillips, Alessandro Miracolo, David Curiel and Cory Petit ushers in the next phase of Jean Grey with a bold new start.

Let’s take a closer look and see how thing fire up!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Mortal or God? That is the identity complex Grey must deal with in this new series. Phillips brings out the best in both to compel the argument. Right from the start, The Phoenix aura draws unique reactions. Seeing Grey deal with a dying sun instantly showcases the awe-inspiring power of a force that strikes fear throughout the galaxy.

Grey is also grounded back to her human and mutant ties. The conversation with Cyclops is a well-placed break displaying her human emotions. It serves as a precursor for what lies later. Once in conflict, the writing takes flight. Even with all her power, a question of choice leads to a bigger domino effect. This all leads into a strong close where Grey must atone for her actions but will it be enough?

The art delivers on giving the Phoenix Force a prestigious feel. Seeing Grey deal with the dying sun makes an instant statement to her power levels. Grey’s mere presence strikes fear. This is complimented with a full page splash showing Grey in full Phoenix mode.

The action panels bring a frantic and intense pace. Events don’t slow down and mirror the dramatic challenge at hand. Grey’s reactions play into the conflict of her humanity vs. being above reproach. This builds to a striking image to end things with building excitement on the horizon.

FINAL GRADE: 9

With a new direction, Jean Grey takes flight with a stellar first flight. Phillips builds a complex challenge with superb writing. The artwork gives readers high paced action through the cosmos as the Phoenix blazes another trail for readers to jump on board.

PARANOID GARDENS #1 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, the mind behind “The Umbrella Academy” has returning to comic shops. Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance fame is no stranger to comics. Way started as a DC Comics Intern in 2001 before his band took off to mainstream levels. Since then, Doom Patrol and being a co-creator of Peni Parker (2014’s Edge Of Spider-Verse) have been some of the musician/writer’s stand out moments.

Way is now poised to head back into the comic realm with a brand new series. It is perfect timing with the UA set to wrap up on Netflix in August of 2024. With one franchise closing, readers are gifted a new series via Dark Horse Comics.

PARANOID GARDENS #1 by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, Chris Weston, Dave Stewart and Nate Piekos gears up to take readers into the wild unknown of creative genius. What secrets lurk behind the doors of comics’ most unique care facility?

Let’s not delay any longer and hop on board this trip!

PARANOID GARDENS #1 by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, Chris Weston, Dave Stewart and Nate Piekos (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Welcome to the wild side of the universe! Way (along with co-writer Shaun Simon) delve into the quirky landscape of Loo and an eclectic cast of characters. The writing keeps readers guessing at what in unfolding. Nothing is as what it seems. From simple patient care for an alien to “puppet” face-off, this book carries a sense of wonder from start to finish.

Once a powerful patient arrives for assistance, the story gains speed. Loo seems searching for answers as we meet her. Confronting this figure changes her direction. The writing does a fantastic job of slow-playing reveals as things progress. Certain staff members get spotlight moments as things are bookended with a unique reveal. There are many moving parts involved that will lock readers in for the long haul.

Weston and Stewart present a very grounded vision of this chaotic scene. The dream sequence introducing Loo pops with a mixture of select coloring. Once back in present time, the art depicts the center as a “normal” place. The gathering area panels mirror the daily routine of the Gardens.

Loo goes through a wide range of emotions. Readers her confidently shaking things up to frightened about discoveries. This plays well to other characters as events evolve. The closing act pays great attention to detail as devious moves are made. It’s an impressive display that harkens back to a classic Vertigo era that is nothing short of enjoyable.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5

The insanity and complexity of Paradise Gardens will be on readers’ minds and pull lists after this debut chapter. The writing builds an unconventional story with many avenues to travel down. Sharp imagery and lettering keep things entertaining while more is brewing behind the scenes. It’s a debut you simply can’t pass up.

LUCHAVERSE: CATALYST #1 (MASKED REPUBLIC/MASSIVE PUBLISHING)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, the worlds of comics and pro-wrestling mark a new chapter in their vast joint history. From WWE adaptations, Do a Powerbomb to most recently Hard Style Juice, the two mediums have crossed paths to give fans of both something to remember. There are more similarities in the fandoms and creativity that most might not realize.

The latest entry into the cross-medium looks poised to carve its’ own place into that history. Mixing in the wrestling culture of Lucha Libre into a shared comic universe, Masked Republic and Massive Publishing present a fresh new concept for readers to jump on board with.

LUCHAVERSE: CATALYST #1 by Marco Lopez, Ivan Plaza, Ben Harvey, Bryan Arfel Magnaye, Diego Simone and Micah Myers sets the card for a main event debut!

Let’s see how things kick off for the Luchaverse!

LUCHAVERSE: CATALYST #1 by Marco Lopez, Ivan Plaza, Ben Harvey, Bryan Arfel Magnaye, Diego Simone and Micah Myers (Masked Republic/Massive Publishing)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Right from the start, the new Luchaverse gives multiple genres & wrestlers a new reader friendly spotlight. Rey Mysterio and Tinieblas Jr. are the featured leads for this issue. Each story gets a synopsis page before diving into their chapters.

Mysterio’s story is centered in adventure and mystery. The writing mixes in key flashbacks while walking readers through the big action. Anyone looking for in-ring action will get a very small dose. This makes for a better play to separate Rey the wrestler from Rey the Action Hero.

Mysterio being paired with “The Ambassadors” gives off “Expendables” vibes. Their mission appears very straight forward. Once the flashbacks start happening, the story becomes much wide-scale in danger and depth. The closing act speeds into a new stat quo for Rey and the Luchaverse as a whole. It plays into its’ strength: big Hollywood-esque action. With a impactful parting image, events are passed off to the next story.

The writing for Tinieblas Jr. carries a different feel than Rey’s story. Heading into a more supernatural detective feel, Plaza and Lopez puts the protagonist on an ever-twisting journey. Tinieblas Jr. comes across as a captivating enigma. This is raised up a few levels by the creatures he encounters.

Combining the fantasy aspect with some combat made this portion stand out. It’s something readers won’t be expecting as things progress forward. That said, it makes complete sense to the legacy it crosses with. The ending shifts gears yet again to a puzzling stop. Readers will have some theories forming before the next time they see Tinieblas Jr. but that’s always how you want to leave the audience: wanting more.

Harvey and Magnaye handle art duties for Mysterio’s chapter. They waste no time launching Rey into action with the opening page. Leading in with a strong start, the flashback sequences play into the youthful days of a hero in training. As previously said, there is a touch of pro-wrestling added in the adventure.

However, the chase of the first Mysterio mask locks readers in. The feel is tense as one wrong move could destroy everything. This builds into a direct full page splash redefining the lead’s role. Its’ fallout slowly reveals Rey’s new stat quo. Readers will be pleased with the action and the final image kickstarting the new era of hero in the Luchaverse.

Diego Simone gives Tinieblas Jr. a more eerie tone as he descends Las Vegas. Within a few panels, the unsettling feel quickly grows as Tinieblas Jr. begins his hunt. The full page image of his discovery of creatures jumps off the page. The art moves things swiftly into another flashback before quickly resuming.

Simone’s vision of Koreshan City is filled with despair and trouble. Solid fighting is thrown into the panels before a switch of direction. The final act is short but leaves readers with a full page close that will have them talking.

FINAL POINT: 8.7

With elements of adventure and mystery abound, the Luchaverse debuts on a strong foundation that will only grow forward from here. Solid writing and energetic art keep readers engaged as their combination of wrestling and heroes delivers a monster win. This universe has all the makings for becoming a new showcase of the immortals at the LCS and beyond.

SUPERMAN #16 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the Man of Steel has fallen! Amanda Waller dealt a shocking blow. Absolute Power kicked off in a monster way. Superman’s powers are no more. After being shot, Clark Kent is currently fighting for his life. It’s an unfathomable thought come to life. Is the DCU about to lose Superman again?

SUPERMAN #16 by Joshua Williamson, Jamal Campbell and Ariana Maher jumps in the fallout of that fateful moment!

Let’s not waste another second and dive into the story!

SUPERMAN #16 by Joshua Williamson, Jamal Campbell and Ariana Maher (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson takes readers down a few paths for this issue. Seeing a rare glimpse of Young Clark sets the stage for the shocking reality of events. The writing creates the desperate attempt to save Superman perfectly. Once at this stage, the spotlight is thrown on Zatanna to take the baton and run.

Her portion of the book is one that fans will become fully invested with. In this “new” powerless era, Zatanna adapts to the new stat quo with some unlikely help. Tying back to the beginning of this series, it solidifies how far one character has changed working with Big Blue. Even with the seriousness of Waller’s onslaught, there’s a great sequence involving well timed humor.

The break balances out the chapter heading into the final act. Once there, the story mixes in some surprises. None will stand out more than the final page. This is largely due to the artwork of Campbell.

It has been a while since readers have seen him on a full Superman book. Readers received a quick reminder of how great his vision of Superman’s world is. The young Clark moments creates the wholesome era of Smallville. The transition to present day is pulled off with dramatic ease.

Zatanna steals scenes with her fighting skills. There are a few half page panels that signify her impact on the current state. Mixed in with the heavy weight of knowing of Jon Kent’s status, the imagery makes for a strong portion of the book. It fully conveys how much of this war has been Hell already.

The final page is a great reveal. Campbell sets the wheels in motion for the next chapter with a full page action shot. It caps off a visually impressive chapter that fans will have much to rave about.

FINAL POINT: 8.7

Waller’s biggest blow in her attack was mortally wounding DC’s symbol of hope. Superman begins his redemption story with a solid opening chapter. Williamson juggles multiple characters with excellent writing and pacing. Campbell constructs great action along with emotionally driven moments for a chapter that shouldn’t be missed.

For this entry, the world of Gatchaman has returned in a big way! The legendary team retuned to comic shops with two big releases via Mad Cave Studios. Let’s take a closer look at how things play out now.

GATCHAMAN: GALACTOR #1 by Steve Orlando, Kath Lobo, and Frank Cvetkovic (Mad Cave Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

For anyone new to the fandom, Orlando brings out the sadistic and ruthless nature of Katse to a terrifying level. The attempt on his life is shrouded in his own self-loathing of failure. Once the attempt is made, the story kicks into full swing. Katse is written as an ultimate strategist. His methods of deciphering who was behind the attacks shows the level of viciousness he will go to win.

This leads into a strong final act. Relying heavily on bait and switch, Katse has a unique stand-off. The devious nature pours off panels as Katse works. This builds up the drama to a fever pitch. Its’ fallout is very good. The surface has only begun to be scratched. That point is drilled home with a definat last page. Events are paced out perfectly to let the world know Katse is out for blood. Get ready for a true path a rage for readers to walk.

Lobo brings an energetic feel to this chapter. There is a two-page splash to feature Galactor in action. It’s met with a brief but impactful entrance for the Gatchaman team. From here, the focus goes solely on Katse and the cunning nature he oozes.

From the evil smirk to the depths of his investigation, Katse’s body language showcases his devious ways. This pours into the final standoff. Seeing the cat and mouse nature of the scene plays out is one readers will enjoy. It ends with a full page dramatic reveal of Katse to his unsuspecting adversary.

The momentum carries right to the closing page. With a glorious stance in full page form, Katse makes his presence known he is only getting started.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

Aim for the King and you had best not miss. That is the aura Berg Katse demonstrates in this captivating chapter. Orlando constructs a building mystery with great writing. Lobo captures the manic nature of Galactor’s heavy with excellent visuals. There is much for readers to become invested with the matters unfolding in the Gatchaman Universe.

ABSOLUTE POWER: TASK FORCE VII #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, the reign of Amanda Waller has begun. Planning for weeks, Waller has unleashed her plan of eliminating superheroes from the DCU. Powerless heroes serve no opposition to her Trinity Of Evil. This truly feels like the darkest time in the DCU.

Spinning out of the first chapter is a series highlighting Waller’s grand scheme. Readers will need to brace for the journey they’re about to partake. There is no happy ending on the horizon from what we have seen thus far.

ABSOLUTE POWER: TASK FORCE #1 by Leah Williams, Caitlin Yarsky, Alex Guimarães and Dave Sharpe brings the Marvel family into the crossfire!

Let’s take a deeper dive as to where things go now.

ABSOLUTE POWER: TASK FORCE #1 by Leah Williams, Caitlin Yarsky, Alex Guimarães and Dave Sharpe (DC Comics) cover: Pete Woods

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williams spotlights Waller’s attack on the Marvels with a steady paced tale. Using Parasite as an unwilling tracker, her cold intentions shine through. This transfers over to The Last Son. Bearing a likeness to Superman (Is this really Jonathan Kent?), the mysterious figure brings the fight to the young heroes. This carries a more lighter feel as one who reads Shazam knows. That does change when a new entrant crashes the party.

At this stage, the mood shifts dramatically. Readers watch as the Last Son starts showing areas of a break in programming. Williams leaves this point vague to allow readers to form their own theories. It is short lived but noteworthy. Form here, the events lead to an expected conclusion. Even with the final pages, Waller’s manipulations grow further with a new face falling under her wicked constructed vision.

Yarsky and Guimarães kick off events with asolid opening chapter. Seeing the fear and pain in Parasite’s face strikes a nerve with readers. Waller’s emotionless expressions proves how far she’s willing to go to secure victory.

The Rock of Eternity portion replicate classic themes with the visuals. Seeing Billy Batson and Mary Bromfield process how they are now being hunted adds to the drama. Their “back-up” makes a huge debut with a full page image. This carries into the action sequences. Events move very swiftly leading to a sudden finale of the fight. The closing pages set up the next phase very well with a final panel mirroring what the audience is thinking.

FINAL POINT: 7

Amanda Waller’s plan stretch across the DCU with a chapter taking a closer look at her victorious ways. Williams gives readers a deeper look at the evil rising with an excellent story. Yarsky, Guimarães and Sharpe construct a focused look at Waller’s attack with the visuals. If you’re looking for a broader picture of the evil takeover, this will be one for you.

ACTION COMICS #1067 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, Absolute Power has taken over the DCU. Superman has been caught up in Amanda Waller’s big plan to eliminate metahumans. This comes right off the heels of the House of Brainiac storyline which last left a lasting impression on the Man Of Steel.

With all that going on, the lates issue of DCs longest running series takes a trip back in time. Readers can settle in for a classic era Superman story. Considering the creative team behind it, we are in for a fantastic ride.

ACTION COMICS #1067 by Gail Simone, Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, Rex Lokus and Dave Sharpe (Back-up by Rainbow Rowell, Cian Tormey, and Romulo Fajardo jr.) throws it back for vintage time period tale.

Let’s take a deeper dive at what transpires now.

ACTION COMICS #1067 by Gail Simone, Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, Rex Lokus and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Welcome back to a timeless era. Simone checks off all the boxes with this issue. Drama, action, suspense…this one has it all! Readers start with the timeless Clark-Lois reporting competition front and center. This is pushed aside with a surprising Alien invasion. Tensions mount until a dramatic entrance from Big Blue swings everything into a new plateau.

Where a fight could break out, Superman tries talking and understanding the situation. It is one of Clark’s strongest qualities: being a diplomat when needed. The conflict becomes clear but not without strings attached. Simone weaves in a fun twist in before the action commences. There are iconic Superman moments all through the aliens’ challenge. Its’ resolution leaves a great cliffhanger (or should I say “shiphanger”) ending that locks in readers for the long haul.

Barrows, Miki and Lokus go heavy into the full (or near-full) page images for this issue. IMO, this is what works best with Superman stories. The introduction with Mr. Pierce connects with the audience of the impact of losing the youth center. This is followed up with a superb introduction of Superman into the building conflict. The mix of full page with sparce panels conveys the larger-than-life aura the Man of Steel carries.

This never escapes readers sight. Once his “challenger” appears, the moment feels gigantic to match. The following action images could have been taken form a movie. It is vintage Superman. It’s fallout is a more subtle build but the last panel is one that has a few exclamation points on it before concluding! Excellent work by the team for this chapter.

The back-up story by Rowell and Tormey dives into the present struggle of Lois as the Daily Planet EIC. Rowell’s writing sets up the strong ethical conflict of interest perfectly. Tormey and the team mix in some action to soften the jabs thrown by the new boss. Great ending to carry into Lois’ next moves being in charge.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Taking the Man Of Tomorrow back in time proves to be a winning play for Superman fans. Simone brings out the best of Clark Kent with fantastic storytelling. Barrows, Miki, Lokus and Sharpe elevate the high stakes to new levels with epic imagery. This story doesn’t miss bringing back the superhero themes we all know and love. Don’t miss it.

X-MEN #1 (MARVEL COMICS 2024)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the age of Krakoa is no more. Standing in its wake is ashes. Ashes that will rise and lead mutantkind into its’ next historic chapter. The world of the Children of the Atom begins anew! With a brand new team comes brand new challenges. How does this squad fare with Magneto overseeing the action?

X-MEN #1 (2024) by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J. P. Mayer, Marte Gracia and Clayton Cowles ushers in a new stat quo for the legendary Marvel team of Mutants.

Let’s see how the latest installments sets the pace.

X-MEN #1 (2024) by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J. P. Mayer, Marte Gracia and Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

First and foremost, this issue is VERY new reader friendly. The opening page is a quick synopsis featuring the team line-up. This version of the squad is comprised of Cyclops, Beast, Psylocke, Kid Omega, Temper, Magik, Juggernaut and Magneto. There is also an “X-Mentions” section that is very useful to keep track of future events.

One point readers need to keep in mind with this series is it’s a return to superhero basics. The themes of Krakoa are not present here. MacKay pens a reminder of the classic tropes of the heroic age. Fans looking for some semblance of “X-Men ‘97” will find points to enjoy with this chapter.

An element that jumps off the pages is the playful disfunction of the team. The pairing of Juggernaut and Magik steals panels. Kid Omega is another that will have fans smirking with the dialogue he spouts. It’s a more light-hearted feel even with the dire times at hand.

The conflicts are very opposite in this chapter. One is more traditional in “Fourth School”. The other is the human/mutant relations in Krakoa’s wake. Magneto and Beast have standout moments concerning this area. It ultimately circles back to a familiar landing spot. The future is still anchored by the past. The closing page re-enforces the X-Men stance, albeit with more punch than previous showings. Welcome to a new era indeed.

Stegman and the art team give the X-Men plenty of heroic action panels in this debut. The two page spread heading into action kicks events off in a great manner. Seeing the difference in focus between Omega and Cyclops demonstrates the clash in styles. A full page panel entrance into the fray will have readers amped for what’s next. This energy carries strongly into the mission at hand. It’s classic X-Men 101.

Contrasting this is the Beast images. Dealing with the local authorities brings out a variety of emotion in Mr. McCoy. Readers see a range of playfulness to lamenting about Krakoan times. It builds for the adjustment to the new stat quo. This gets amplified with Magneto’s half panel entrance. Even in the new space, old habits die hard. it justifies the final image of the chapter. Readers will have to see if time will heal all wounds.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

A return to basics floods the pages of the latest X-Men series debut. MacKay’s writing takes readers on a vintage journey into the more heroic nature of the squad. Stegman, Mayer Gracia and Cowles balance the big action with more reflective images. All together, it starts off the latest phase of mutant history with some new looks on the original Xavier blueprint.

SPIDER-MAN: REIGN 2 #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, we are checking out a sequel to a very polarizing series. Spider-Man: Reign (2006) is a gritty, dark story set in the far future. Peter Parker has retired after Mary Jane died. Superheroes were replaced by Mayor Waters’ REIGN force. Certain familiar Spidey characters are vastly re-imagined.

Marvel has touted that this is “The most notorious Spider-Man story ever told” and with good reason. This is unlike any Spidey story you have ever read. Now nearly twenty years later, it’s sequel is hitting the comic shops.

SPIDER-MAN: REIGN 2 #1 by Kaare Andrews, Brian Reber and Joe Caramanga picks up where a King has returned to New York City’s throne.

Let’s see how the sequel shapes up.

SPIDER-MAN: REIGN 2 #1 by Kaare Andrews, Brian Reber and Joe Caramanga (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Andrews doesn’t delay in bringing this unique look of Spider-Man’s world to the forefront. The Kingpin has escaped his prison due to Spidey’s actions to stop Venom. Fisk’s opening sequence is brutal and unforgiving on the corrupt Mayor. This pushes the pacing as to where things are currently set.

As for Peter, the writing shows how far and broken he has become. The virtual hell he resides in will bluntly hit readers. This is far from the Spider-Man many know and love. Even when there are some vintage Spidey moments, they come across as jaded and grim. This is heavily influenced by the wasteland he resides in.

The injection of a new Black Cat offers a very different dynamic to the tale. With her opening sequence, fans will have a reaction one way or another. Whom she has allied with will throw more off. It is an intriguing yet fitting partnership. The writing offers up a brooding glimpse of fleeting hope. These are drastic times. Seeing how NYC was devolved pushes Parker’s mission into a new landing spot. The final page will give readers much to ponder as Fisk is prepared to hold his newly claimed crown at any cost.

The art leaves nothing off limits as to the cold and brutal landscape of the story. Fisk handling Waters is violent and unforgiving scattered over panels. The full image of Fisk in the aftermath will stand out t readers. This is paired well with the residents and those who didn’t survive. The Webb panels drive home the dwindling hope of the once vibrant city.

Once Peter gets up and moving, there are some excellent Spidey visuals. A full page escape image kicks things into some classic web-slinging. This might be the only bright spot in the dark environment until the very end. Andrews pays a slight homage to McFarlane with a full page image that re-starts Spidey’s efforts to fight back. It launches the book into the next chapter and wherever that may leave.

FINAL POINT: 6.5

The world of a broken Peter Parker comes back to life with a tale that drives home how far Spider-Man has fallen. Andrews takes creative chances with the writing sinks further into the chaotic grasp of a new King of New York. The art fits the mood with little glimpse of a return to form for the Wall-Crawler. It isn’t your average story and will be an acquired taste for some readers. If looking for an edgier Spidey tale, this should be on the radar.

LOCAL MAN #11 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry….F*CK Crossjack!

One of the best books at the LCS continues its’ throwback influenced saga of a hero’s fall from grace. Jack Xaver’s future is still anchored down by his past sins. Public opinion has turned against him. Xaver technically can’t be a super hero legally. Even with these factors, the disgraced hero is still trying to do the right thing.

Local Man #11 BY Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio sees Xaver take drastic measures to take down the Faceless Horde. Will he prevail?

Let’s take a closer look and see how he fares now.

Local Man #11 BY Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio (IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Fleecs and Seeley masterfully balance the sharp humor and drama at hand. Xaver is a flawed character. Even with the odds stacked, he shows there is a hero somewhere inside him. The conversation with Naveen is a prime example of how little he is regarded by his “peers”. This serves to amplify the last resort play for help in Officer Kopecki.

The mood is uneasy but the writing injects some well timed breaks in that makes the confrontation stand out (and who knew about the officer’s “powers”). The Slide 2.0 steals scenes throughout the issue. The odd-couple pairing of Rudy and Xaver works to lock readers in for the unlikely villain of this chapter. Its’ resolution nails the landing. From here, the closing pages throw some interesting directions at the readers for where we go next.

Paired with the throwback story, there’s no doubt about why this series gets the praise and hype it deserves!

The art captures the frustration of Xaver’s plans extremely well. His expressions while dealing with Naveen and Officer Kopecki are an easy win with readers. Capturing the comedic timing of The Slide breaks up the drama perfectly. How the villain here is taken out are panels fans won’t want to miss.

There are some more serious images that keep things very grounded as well. The Fright being unleashed are panels that set a striking tone leading to its’ unlikely conclusion. Along with the final pages, the issue has something for everyone to be invested in.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The life and times of Jack Xaver never cease to amaze and please. Fleecs, Seeley and the team gift readers with an entertaining trip through the struggles of a fractured hero. This book always sets a high bar for storytelling and comic fans simply can’t miss it.

RADIANT BLACK #29 & 29.5 by Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark, Eduardo FerigatoMarcelo CostaRaul AnguloRod Fernandez, and Becca Carey looks to pick up the pieces of loss for both heroes. Will it be enough to end the war?

Let’s take a deeper dive and see what happens now!

RADIANT BLACK #29 & 29.5 by Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark, Eduardo FerigatoMarcelo CostaRaul AnguloRod Fernandez, and Becca Carey (black market narrative/Image Comics)

RADIANT BLACK #29 & 29.5 by Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark, Eduardo FerigatoMarcelo CostaRaul AnguloRod Fernandez, and Becca Carey (black market narrative/Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Marshall's story delves into the themes of pain and loss. The writing shows the burden of choices. With every action he has taken, Marshall just can't find a way to have a good outcome. This becomes clearly evident as he makes a decision that alienates himself from allies. The thoughts of the greater good maybe noble but it is not without a cost.

The writing reflects the dire consequences of Marshall's call. The brooding tension with fellow radiants finally boils over. Its' resolution comes with grave results. Marshall becomes increasing frantic until his breaking point is hit. Pacing shows how this has been growing to the perfect crash point. Judging by where things lead now, the worst for Mr. Ward may be on the horizon.

29.5 shines the spotlight on Nathan's path. Much like Marshall, Nathan has had to make choices. However, the heroic nature seems to shine through more. Where Marshall seems more uncomfortable to what plays out, Nathan regroups quickly to dive for more answers.

When a certain Radiant makes his appearance, the story leans into more of a direct path for answers. Readers will be locked in as the War's end starts becoming clearer. The writing dictates Nathan's new grasp of what is transpiring. It gives the sense of here might be some possibility of winning, even if short lived. The closing act shows the definite difference between the radiants as a call is made. The chapter closes with a great ending that will set the show-stopping conclusion into overdrive next issues! Get ready.

Ferigato and Costa bring the best out of their chapters. Marshall's fragile state carries into his drastic choice. The action sequence flow with a high velocity. It's resolution gives one character a half page final moment. Readers won't even have time to react as the battle rages onward. Excellent closing full page panel to lead readers into the ending chapter.

As for Nathan, the coloring of Fernandez elevates a few panels to new heights. The key radiant entrance gets a two page splash with a donut shop stealing scenes. This is backed up by Nathan and Marshall flying through a trippy two page splash of their own. Seeing how they enter this chapter's end pages mirrors the ugliness of the conflict. The parting image sets the table for fans to feast on a showdown for the ages. There is much to praise both teams about.

FINAL POINT: 9.2 (#29 - 9, #29.5 - 9.4)

With the Pen-Ultimate chapters of the Massive-Verse's biggest event, there was a fair balance of emotions and action. Higgins and Clark weave into the decent of a breakdown with Marshall. BATMAN #150 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the Dark Knight is at a crossroads. Coming off the heels of “Dark Prisons”, Bruce Wayne is looking for a new beginning. He just defeated his imperfect creation. The Bat Family got an apology long overdue. A broken home is being rebuilt.

With all the good things swirling around Wayne’s life, not everything is well and good. Amanda Waller has dangerous plans lingering in the shadows. None of which will make Batman very happy once discovered.

BATMAN #150 by Chip Zdarsky, Denys Cowan, Jorge Jiménez, John Stanisci, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles (along with “Brick By Brick” by Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto and Romulo Fajardo Jr.) gives readers a solo tale before the drama finds Bruce Wayne.

Let’s take a closer look at what is happening here for this milestone chapter!

BATMAN #150 by Chip Zdarsky, Denys Cowan, Jorge Jiménez, John Stanisci, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles (along with Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto and Romulo Fajardo Jr.) DC COMICS

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Zdarsky sets up a simple yet layered dilemma with this chapter. Someone discovering the true identity of Batman is a gift and curse per say. The writing shows the weight of the information crushing a desperate man. With each page, the hope of a score slowly dwindle away. The escalation of problems helps move things right along to a strong closing act.

Even with the swirling thieves trying to get that information, the story has been all based around a man trying to find some purpose. The conversation he has with his son hits readers very deeply. The impact of Batman on Gotham’s citizens shines in this moment. A normal night for him can alter someone’s future forever. Once the final pages start rolling, Zdarsky ties up some loose ends before showing how the Bat can inspire someone to become much more no matter who they are.

A new dynamic duo steps in for art duties for this special issue. Cowan and Jiménez give readers a detailed look at how the Bat impacts the criminal world. The panels feature varying accounts of previous encounters. It also features a looming Batman watching over his city with no dialogue. This lets the people form their own versions of the Dark Knight’s influence.

Cowan’s depiction of the father and son talk works to drive home the core theme. The reactions of a changed son and broken father strike a chord. It carries into the closing moments. Events close up with a strong parting shot sending readers home knowing Gotham is Batman and Batman is Gotham.

“Brick by Brick” serves as a solid bridge from Absolute Power to Batman’s next move in that story. The writing catches Batman at a very low point. It amplifies the chaos unfolding around him. The art flows with the faster pace of events. It also gives more clues to Waller’s big play. It does its’ job to move things forward with a new player teased to become part of the big event.

FINAL POINT: 9

Knowledge is power, but at what cost? That is the question posed with this anniversary issue. Zdarsky presents a lost soul’s quest for relevancy with excellent writing. Cowan, Jiménez and the art team walk readers through the seedy world of Gotham with strong visuals. This leads to a fitting end that is sure to leave a lasting impression on the audiance.

Enter the Titans as the world’s greatest superhero team. A new wave of heroes entered the spotlight. It seemed as a new heroic era had been born.

ABSOLUTE POWER #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

If anyone wants to know the perfect way to start an event of, THIS is it. Waid unleashes Waller’s plans with a multi-layered front. The writing depicts a reflection of society in its flawed sense of belief. Seeing Waller weave a false narrative camouflages readers to her true intent. Its’ impact can be measured on one certain character’s reaction which spoke volumes to the threat at hand.

Seeing Batman caught off-guard is an image fans won’t be able to process. There is a sense of uncertainty that looms heavy. This is brought to a fever pitch with Waller playing a wild card that will create quite the stir. It is perfectly worded: “Waller’s not playing Chess … she’s rolling tanks”. Unveiling the true attack, the writing shows the ruthlessness of Waller. This leads right into the closing act. With the frantic scrambling, one hero seems next in line to fall. Welcome to a new age of terror.

Mora and Sánchez brings Waller’s frightening world to disturbing life. The opening sequence involving Superman sets a high tempo of suspense. This is capped off with a bold full page picture of a fallen Man of Steel. It is a defining portrait of what lies ahead.

Waller’s mannerisms also tell quite the story. The cold and stoic demeanor dominates each panel. Readers won’t be able to shake what is unfolding before their eyes. This leads into a two page splash of the true attack on display. Seeing the multi-planned onslaught raises the stakes even higher. There is no doubt of the heroes’ losing conflict. The art team gives readers a few more shocks on the way to the close. With its’ final shot, the art team caps off an event of epic proportions.

FINAL POINT: 10

In one calculated strike, the entire DC Universe is put on notice that their time is up. Waid crafts a multi-layered story with superb writing. The electric artwork of Mora and Sánchez will leave readers in awe of the shocking and thrilling onslaught. Once the last page is read, there is no doubt the quest for power shows no mercy.

For this entry, the Road to Resurgence is in full effect. Valiant Comics has a new home under Alien Books. With the new home, their roster of characters looks make waves once again at the comic shops.

Let’s take a closer look at what unfold here.

NINJAK vs ROKU #1 by AJ Ampadu, Emiliano Correa, and Marina Leon (Valiant Comics/Alien Books) Cover: Luca Erbetta

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ampadu showcases many sides of Colin King. In the beginning, Ninjak appears to be calm and confident as ever. Heading into his assignment, there is no hesitation. Once he (and readers) find out Roku is involved, his strong demeanor starts crumbling.

Their initial encounter plays into the traditional spy themes. Roku has many layers of mystery surrounding her. Seeing Ninjak try cyphering the truth turns into a game. Once things get down to the task at hand, their conversation becomes more professional. At this moment, Ninjak’s hesitation starts seeping through. It continues the uneasy feeling that things can flip at the drop of a dime. The final page cements this, leaving readers intrigued for more.

Correa brings a flair for the spy business with the art. The opening panels feel like they are right out of a James Bond film. The encounter with Ninjak and Roku is filled with great fighting panels. Readers will be very pleased with the set-up here. Roku’s past flashbacks has great cameos mixed in. The emotions involve carry much gravity to them. None stand out more than the final panel. The facial expressions make a statement. It’s a solid close to a journey into danger where we are all following along with now.

FINAL POINT: 8

Valiant’s Super Spy heads right in the direction of danger with his latest assignment. The writing delves into the cloak and dagger world with ease. It is mirrored by the art which has a fair split between action and conspiracy. This is a great start to what seems as a multi-layered tale readers will solidly enjoy.

GATCHAMAN #1 by Cullen Bunn, Chris Batista, Carlos Lopez and Buddy Beaudoin (Mad Cave Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue does a great job of introducing these classic characters to a new audience. Bunn sets up the conflict early before shifting gears into the group dynamic. Knowing there are heroes waiting in the wings, it gives a sense of uncertainty moving to address the city disturbance. Ken, Joe, Jun, Jinpei, and Ryu debut with some action moments then head right into the main course. The story dabbles in the classic superhero themes.

It is everything fans have known and loved about this fandom. The pacing keeps up a high pace once the big showdown commences. Fans are gifted a solid closing cliffhanger. There is much revealed but not anything spoiled to defer readers from flying back for more.

The art carries a strong presence throughout the issue. Science Ninja Team soars into the picture via a two page spread. The introductory page explaining who and what is a great touch that gets right down to business. This builds towards a solid spilt page kicking off the mission at hand.

Once arriving at the disturbance, the art hits the gas pedal, speeding through action panels. Lopez’s coloring brings out the best of Bastisa’s art. There is a certain electricity through the conflict. This builds towards the final pages. With a sense of doubt, the story concludes after a strong superhero tale.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

Some may say “G-Force.” Others might go with “Battle of The Planets.” After concluding this first chapter, Gatachman will be the one on readers minds at the comic shops. Bunn sets up a vintage inspired hero story with the writing. Batista and Lopez craft a fantastic visual presence that is sure to win over new and seasoned fans alike. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Mackay shows the wear of the losing battle on Dr. strange and Clea. Seeing how they ask for help from a sinister source proves the gravity of the fight. Seeing the tricks already being set in motion will have fans attention. The price for teamwork is a steep cost. Nothing of this event is easy. Everything pays a toll.

The reveal of the true mastermind is well placed. It plays superbly into the vampire mythos of the true MCU. Readers will be locked in to where MacKay leads the mastermind into the close. With events swirling around, there is no time left. The closing pages have been put in motion. The writing has staged new players. They have entered the field. There is no turning back from here. Only one will win.

Larraz and Gracia give the surprise partnership a bold start. A full page spread sets a tense feel. Knowing Strange has no leverage, the major player is pulling the strings. The art reflects the arrogance involved. It also greets readers with his frst ace up the sleeve. Readers will be caught off guard as much as Strange’s reaction to the proposal of services.

The art adds a sense to drama to the reveal of the mastermind behind the horror. With a near full page, the moment carries a defiant aura. This leads into the beginning of the final act.

With the heroes initial strike of redemption, the art captures the sense of victory slipping away. It is also complimented with a dramatic return of a fan-favorite. This rolls into the tide turning with full page images. Once that last page hits, the art team has set things off for a brutal last stand.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Secrets are revealed and unlikely bonds are forged. MacKay sets up the pen-ultimate chapter with solid writing. Fans get big moments throughout the issue. The art brings out the prestige of these events. Once the last page hits, readers know they’re in for a grand finale for the ages.

Let’s take a closer look at where things play out now.

GRIM #18 by Stephanie PhillipsFlavianoRico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (BOOM! STUDIOS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This is a tale of two stories. Both carry equal weight. Since its’ return, Grim has been spotlighting members of the supporting cast. Harold (featured on the cover) gets his minutes of Fame. Phillips crafts an ethical question surrounding his existence. It is a strength to his character, This also allows two key figures to have some of their history unveiled. It is a great opening lead mixed in with the rock and roll vibe this series is known for.

The other story jumps to present events. Catching up to where the world has gone to Hell (literally), Phillips bears the importance of Harold in his greater role. Seeing him mix it up with his “boss” made for a well-paced break in the drama. The build to confronting the present day horror gets another layer added. Once the showdown finally commences, the impact on the readers will be huge and worth the wait.

It is literally impossible to read an issue of Grim and not be completely blown away by the art and imagery. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolintano take the flashback moments and dive deep into the unpredictability of that era.

Under the words of Johnny Cash, Harold’s tale pops off the pages. The panels of view through Harold’s eyes are next level creative. This leads into a two-page montage that encompasses Harold’s journey. It’s filled with haunting lyrics, excellent coloring and show-stopping images. This team sets the bar extremely high for others to follow. Once readers arrive at the final panel, the parting image will make a loud statement as to a new chapter in Jessica’s path of destiny.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

When you have a creative team like Phillips, Flaviano, Renzi and Napolintano pushing the creative boundaries each issue, you know to expect great storytelling. This issue has everything readers want. High drama, imaginative panels and a story that doesn’t escape attention. Don’t miss it.

This element comes into play when the Order checks in. The conversation breaks up the serious tone with its’ awkwardness. Once Erica interjects, the mood shifts back to a more serious tone. Tynion reveals just enough of the past to keep readers in suspense.

The conclusion ends with a level feel. There is no extra drama needed. It is a conclusion that just says goodbye. In this line of work, there is no heartfelt goodbyes. It’s always strictly business as the final page states.

ABSOLUTE POWER : GROUND ZERO #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the countdown to extinction starts for the DC Universe. Over the past few years, the seeds have been planted. Fans that have read Batman, Superman, Titans: Beast World, and Suicide Squad: Dream Team just to name a few, have seen the work. One character has been weaving her plans in the shadows. Her name is AMANDA WALLER.

Now, one of the DC Universe’s most dangerous people is about to unleash her plans into the spotlight.

ABSOLUTE POWER: GROUND ZERO #1 by Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Skylar Patridge, Patricio Delpeche, Steve Wands, Chip Zdarsky, V. Ken Marion, Joshua Williamson and Gleb Melnikov (DC COMICS) showcases the final moments before Waller takes her plans for the DC Heroes to a whole new level.

Let’s see how things look before ABSOLUTE POWER begins!

ABSOLUTE POWER: GROUND ZERO #1 by Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Skylar Patridge, Patricio Delpeche, Steve Wands, Chip Zdarsky, V. Ken Marion, Joshua Williamson and Gleb Melnikov (DC COMICS) Cover: Dan Mora

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue is broken into three separate Stages:

Stage #1 by Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Skylar Patridge, Patricio Delpeche, and Steve Wands centers around Jay Nakamura. On Gammora Island, Waller has taken out its’ president. Nakamura is next on the list, but where does Dreamer’s loyalties lie?

Stage #2 by Waid, Chip Zdarsky, V. Ken Marion, Delpeche and Wands features the latest “recruit” of the Suicide Squad: John Starr aka Time Commander. Waller has a certain mission for Starr’s skills. The mission is not one of enjoyment. Starr is given the task of bringing back a robotic evil that took a combined effort of the Bat-Family to defeat!

Stage #3 by Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov and Wands serves as an epilogue to the “House Of Brainiac” storyline in Action Comics and Superman. With a very big loose end to address, Waller takes it upon herself to handle this variable. What results may be the final piece to her puzzle of Absolute Power!

If anyone is new to the world of Amanda Waller, this book will give you enough insight on why she is hated and feared in the DCU. Each stage shows a varying degree. The first is the effect of her presence on Dreamer.

Stage One is a heavily emotionally driven tale. The conversations with Nakamura and Dreamer will catch readers attention. Dreamer comes across as a sympathetic character caught between what’s right and what is perceived right by Waller. Where her character goes from here will be one story to watch moving forward.

Patridge and Delpeche focus much on the art on the facial reactions of the two leads. The anger and self loathing will lock in readers. The images connect how personal the actions and consequences are. In the conclusion, the panels tease what’s next. Will it be a road to redemption or slipping deeper into danger? Only time will tell.

Stage Two borrows a similar theme from the beginning stage. Starr is a reluctant character forced to work against his will. Knowing what lies ahead, the sense of danger and anxiety ring true. It serves as a gateway from Zdarsky’s Batman to the crossover. The story is a very quick one but does a fair job in explaining what is forthcoming in the event.

Marion crafts a fast moving tale with the writing team. The only moments of pause are Starr’s looks of peril. It never escapes reader’s attention as his fear of what is coming grows with each page. The near full page ending drives home the regret of what has transpired and how Starr is sinking quickly into a grave dug by Waller.

Arguably the strongest stage of all, Stage Three leaves no question at how heartless Waller can be to get what she wants. Her plan to influence an impressionable key player connects with readers. It is devious from start to finish. The concluding act drops a big exclamation point to casting the first shot into her enemies.

Melnikov brings out the best of Waller’s imposing personality. The reactions to events never rattle the head of Task Force X. This is easy to cypher when she puts her plans in motion. Seeing how she puts up a facade with the unknowing victim echoes the lines crossed for her impending victory. The stage is capped off with a full page spread welcoming the beginning of the end. Brace for impact.

FINAL POINT: 8

Welcome to a new era of danger courtesy of Amanda Waller. Each stage serves as a compliment to previous stories, but is a solid entry point for new readers. The writing goes to great lengths to amplify what Waller is capable of. The art plays off the emotional pull of the reluctant characters turned pawns in the quest for Absolute Power.

SUPERMAN #15 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of a monster Superman event! One of his deadliest foes has created a great evil. When Lex Luthor is even scared of what has been unleashed, it speaks volumes. It also calls for drastic measures to try stopping a Queen from ascending to her violent throne!

SUPERMAN #15 by Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS) is the final stop before ABSOLUTLE POWER!

Let’s see if what they say is true…Does the house always win? Especially if it’s the HOUSE OF BRAINIAC?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson wastes no time in jumping right into the action. During his run, Superman and Lex Luthor have had a unique “frienemy-ship” to say the least. In this closing chapter, both go above and beyond in their efforts to stop Brainiac. The writing shows one making an extreme gamble. This serves as a solid back-drop to the overall cinema-esque style battle raging on.

The conclusion of conflict is one that hits the mark. Brainiac is displayed with some very key reactions to the action at hand. Once the fallout begins, scenes become chaotic with the pacing. It reflects the time sensitive challenge the heroes are up against. In the aftermath, there are some feel-god moments to close with. However, the final few pages with have readers buzzing to what is down the road (pending Absolute Power).

Sandoval and Sánchez construct a pair of two page splashes that readers won’t want to turn the pages from. It instantly builds the rising action. The art showcases the wide ranges of Brainiac’s emotions. Events take place that disrupt the cold, imposing figure. In its wake lies a broken and unsure figure. The art captures the rage of Superman while gifting Brainiac some knowledge he can’t comprehend.

The conclusion plays out as expected. There’s a few images that will jump out to readers. None might be bigger than a Luthor panel and the final page. Both spell disaster for the Man of Steel. They both will have fans attention in the upcoming months as well.

FINAL POINT: 8.9

“House Of Brainiac” closes in an explosive finale. Williamson gifts fans with big action and stronger heroics with the writing. Sandoval, Sánchez and Maher construct a electric and chaotic showdown with the art. As impactful as that is, just wait for the final page!

Hit me up on ODPHpod social media and let me know your thoughts on Superman #15. Thanks for reading!
