A New God is missing. Kamal is a young boy with limitless power. His mere presence caused High Father to take drastic actions. This has spiraled into a conflict between Orion and Mister Miracle on Earth.

New Genesis has its own issues. The peaceful planet was attacked by The Nyctari. Lightray was a casualty in the vicious invasion. This caused High-Father and company to seek refuge on Earth. Once here, a traitor has revealed himself. Serifan is working for Maxwell Lord.

They have stolen Kamal with plans to use him as a weapon. This doesn’t bode well for the Fourth World heroes.

The world of Serifan is brought front and center for this chapter. Ram V introduces him as a boy heavily influenced by American media. The writing slowly walks through the growing impact of his consumption. It leads to a sense of disillusion in dealing with others. This aura builds up to a heart-breaking present view. there is no question of his longing for the past. Sadly, his future is not looking any better.

The conversation with Maxwell Lord is sharp and unapologetic. It moves into a sad state of affairs with no good end in sight. This is a very big contrast from Orion’s court. The mood features him in his new role as Oathmaker. Readers watch as the adjustments are complicated to take. This moves events forward to try a rescue. Readers get a much needed shot of action as the search gains steam. The writing moves this along before heading back to a looming plot point. In this stage, the mood swings into a dangerous place. The closing page makes a loud statement towards the immediate future. Only time will tell if Orion’s group is ready.

Cagle and Segala takes art duties for the history of Serifan. There are many homages to American history. The usage of panels depicts how the child is absorbing this information. It will be easy for readers to start connecting with these pages. It ultimately leads to a sad farewell panel. Cagle and Segala deliver on the emotional toll taken before handing off duties to Parr.

Readers watch as the talk between Serifan and Lord eludes to much mistrust. The expressions given lead to believe a set-up has occurred, fitting the movie motive. This breaks away to show how Orion and company deal with the situation. The art locks in on Orion’s new role problems. There is little time given here as the action finally starts happening. A near full page shot showcases two heroes fending off much of their opposition. This all moves everything towards the close. The art sets the stage for a showdown in waiting. A full page image screams the danger lying in wait. It may have taken a scenic route, but it appears all roads are finally starting to come together.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

A look into a lost soul leads a heavily travelled issue. Ram V’s writing juggles many plots while continuing to build. Cagle and Segala present Serifan’s past with much sadness and longing. Parr takes the issue home with solid action. There’s no turning back now for where this series is heading.

If you want violence, you got it. The previous three issue builds towards the explosive encounter in spades. Thornwall’s long play proves to work as she seems to have Spawn where she wants him. The writing sets an unforgiving pace. There is no brakes for where this all leads. The combat holds nothing back. It mirrors what sacrifices Thornwall has made to get her. The end result is one that throws off the predictable trail.

Readers watch as Spawn takes every blow head on. There is a sense of respect being won as Thornwall attacks. Seeing Spawn acknowledge her skills is a major co-sign. It doesn’t appear to hit that way with Thornwall. The writing plays another hand in this deadly game. It unveils many secrets as their fight progresses. This moves into a unique closing section. Readers watch as a major move stops everything to a screeching halt. It serves as a good pivot to the ending pages. The panels left no doubt the internal conflict of Tasha Thornwall is far from over.

Rosado and Alonso empty the arsenal for this brutal confrontation. The opening pages set up a stunning full page panel. This leads into a ferocious attack by Thornwall. A half page image teases the rage unloading behind her eyes. It showcases a deadly picture. There is never a pause of action in these panels. Every devastating strike is met, blow for blow. The art conveys the heavy weight involving the stand off.

Even as the magical aspect takes hold, the action never falters. There are many shock and awe images popping up in these moments. One point that can’t be lost is how focused Thornwall is in these panels. The art never breaks her expressions even if plans fail. This leads into a thunderous two page splash. Readers see how a desperate play conjours two full page images. This proves impactful as the result finally slows events down. It leans into where the final chapter is slated to go. The art really shined in this portrayal of supernatural chaos.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The long awaited fight between Spawn and Thornwall doesn’t disappoint. Illidge & Sealey conduct the soul crushing duel with an excellent script. Rosado and Alonso gift fans a hellish showdown for the ages. This chapter defines the Spawn Universe’s latest force with a definition of sheer will. Make a point to check this confrontation out!

Bad Blood never goes cold! The Baroness takes a leave of G.I Joe to clear her head. Her break leads her to Paris. Waiting in the shadows is someone who wants an eye for an eye. His name is Major Bludd.

Bludd uses her parents as bait for a trap. After kidnapping her and Cover Girl, he pits them against each other. Using trickery, the Baroness turns the tables. It leaves her one on one against her twisted foe.

Winner. Take. All.

Williamson opens up handling a sub-plot that’s been brewing for a while. The Hound/Clutch “odd couple” serves as a solid build for the Energon Universe. Seeing Transformers interacting more with the Joe side only opens doors for more possibilities. Risk and Mercer’s reactions hit as they both have to process what this all means. It concludes to a great transition to the main event.

Readers watch as the Baroness and Bludd slug it all out. The tone plays into the insanity of Bludd. This is very comfortable villainy. Bludd’s psychotic state leaves room for the Baroness to fight back. The dialogue is sharp. It resonates the brooding mood to a great climax. At this stage, the fight ends with a brutal twist. It serves as a reminder that the Joes are not always angels. Another element at hand is if the Baroness has truly bought in. The writing teases a few notions before moving to close. Readers see the final page changes events before bowing out. It steadies the ship as a certain war is brewing in the shadows. Another fantastic read.

Milana and Loughridge conclude their Joe time with a few strong takes. The Hound/Clutch story is gifted an exciting two page splash. It instantly sets off the combat as the unlikely trio of heroes step up. The pages carry the high-octane tempo into its’ next phase. This provides readers a easier entry into the books’ major lead story.

The fight between Baroness and Bludd doesn’t disappoint. There are plenty of fast-paced strikes. this compliments Bludd’s insane reactions to his mischief. Even as Raptor and Cover Girl get page time, nothing overtakes the Bludd feud. This ultimately comes to a graphic close. The full page image leaves no wonder as to who won. Even as the story tries showing Destro & Cobra Commander, readers will be buzzing about the ending blow. This works in the closing’s favor. The final page teases more events working in the shadows. Judging by the combat, these moments weren’t going to overtake the emotional fight of revenge. Its’ aftermath will be looming around the Energon Universe as it readies itself for the next phase of stories.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

The final round of Baroness vs. Bludd leaves its’ mark as the Energon Universe continues to expand its’ vision. Williamson’s writing leans heavy into action as more builds. Milana and Loughridge grow a fast pace with their strong art. With more on the horizon, the EU is firing on all cylinders. Don’t miss it.

MARVEL/DC: DEADPOOL/BATMAN #1 (MARVEL COMICS/DC COMICS)

What year is it again?! Marvel Comics and DC Comics have released a NEW crossover! It has been over 20 years since the "Big Two" of Comics pulled off a massive event like this. The last took place in 2003 with "JLA/Avengers".

Since then, both have stayed focused on building up their multi-media brands. That doesn't mean the fans never lost hope of the world colliding again (and without a vote deciding who wins).

Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1 kicks off the next wave of crossovers with two of their heavy hitters!

Let’s take a closer look at how this event fares.

Anytime you bring in Deadpool to a story, it can have mixed results. The character has transcended the normal comic realm into something else completely. When paired with the Dark Knight, Wade Wilson shines in the absurdity of his world. The writing takes them into perfect "frienemy" territory. Wells hits on every punchline that mirrors the Ryan Reynolds portrayal. It is no shock to see how heavily influential that performance goes here.

Readers watch as the insanity of Deadpool caters to more elements of the Bat mythos. It results in a fitting response to the conflict at hand. Batman is written in more of a "Batman: animated Series" tone. There's a fair share of brooding while dancing in the more calmer stages. The fallout gives a solid close to their adventure. It leaves readers with a wide open door for where things *might* go in November.

The other stories are great compliments to the crossover appeal. Zdarsky's Cap/Wonder Woman story is a fun and heartfelt read. Kevin Smith returning to Green Arrow and Daredevil is just like riding a bike. His previous runs on both breathed new life into both characters. Seeing this meeting is a fun nod to those era. Everything else are sure to bring some smiles to fans faces due endless possibilities for more.

Bringing back Capullo for Batman is a fun throwback. Deadpool crashes the scene (literally) via full page image. The art highlights his delusional mannerisms . It offsets the stern, brooding face of Bruce Wayne. Readers see how Bruce burns a hole through Deadpool with each look. This carries over to another meeting of Gotham’s finest.

Batman meets Deadpool via a gorgeous full page image. Having Jim Gordon play referee helps to move the story forward. Each pairing keeps up the tense mood as the true culprit comes into light. Seeing Capullo’s Joker back via full page is another gem in this issue. Their face-off during dialogue pays a small homage to the “Death Of The Family” covers. It pays off to starting a frantic switch of events. Readers will enjoy seeing how Deadpool reacts to certain Batman/Joker confrontation.

The fallout sends everyone home happy. Panels encompass the combustible mix of personalities. It also leaves a few doors open to play a return of more to come. Every art team on the other tales give their own spins which shows how all these characters gel together. There's something for everyone with this issue.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

If this is any indication of what's to come, fans are in for something special. Wells leans into the pop culture aspects of the lead characters with the writing. Capullo and the art team shine in bringing Deadpool into Batman's' world. Readers will excited to see each panel unfold. Factor in the other side tales & this event lived up to the hype.

The Snyders open events with a close-up of Charlie’s past. The pages carry more detail than the same style in the previous issue. This start deals with the immediate evacuation as the shroud takes hold. Readers watch as her youthful optimism takes hold. It serves a reminder of better times as the issue progresses. The moment leads the audience into its’ new location. From here, a shift in mood is clearly noticed.

The pages carry a lighter feel as the new residency is explored. Seeing the group embrace this new world leaves the door open for possibilities. Readers watch as the group meets more from this oasis. It is huge contrast to Charon’s hunt. The writing shows how determined the evil figure is for his goal. Jo’s group is just absorbing in some possible changes. It leaves the moment with some optimism and joy. This allows for a deceptive build before the ending. Once in the final phases, another curve is thrown into play. Some may think it’s a straight forward ending. With the ever-changing dynamics, “By A Thread” is anything but predictable.

Favoccia and Cogar head back to Charlie’s past for the opening pages. The fear and anxiety is on the evacuees faces. While brief, Charlie’s time on the hills gives a break in the tension at a key spot. The half panel image says goodbye to innocence as the present arrives. Once the rest of the group start awakening in their new place, uncertainty gives way. In its’ place is a happier tone, even in fleeting stages.

Panel set-up allows the exploration images to take center stage. A half page image shows a new animal confronting the group. It is an imaginative take that moves events along. The panels offer a great segway point to Charon’s efforts. Favoccia lets loose on the terror he presents. A half page shot plays out like a horror movie. It steps aside for a full page shot that delivers a powerful statement. As events go for the close, readers watch as each panel teases a possible light in the dark world. It quickly fades with the final page. The chapter closes with a strong full page cliffhanger. Readers will have much to contemplate as they wait for the next chapter to arrive.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

Jo and his friends find themselves in a new location with many problems following their journey. The Snyders welcomes optimism into the cold world via the writing. Favoccia, Cogar & Napolitano balance out the drama with spectacular visuals. Even a diamond’s shine can’t steal the spotlight from this story.

TRANSFORMERS #24 (SKYBOUND/IMAGE COMICS)

In 2023, the Energon Universe was officially born. Spiraling out of the pages of Void Rivals came a return. Transformers had been a familiar staple to comic readers since 1984. The saga of Optimus Prime and company have transcended pop culture. Finding a new home with Skybound, many wondered how this new run would go.

Putting in the hands of one of comics’ best creators was a good indication. Daniel Warren Johnson took the war between Autobots and Decepticons into new territory. Killing off Bumblebee in issue 1 was a huge statement this wasn’t your average “robots in disguise” book.

Twenty Tree issues later, the series has been nothing short of spectacular. Fans have watched as there has been larger than life action, unique perspectives and emotional rollercoasters between man and machine.

Earlier in 2025, it was announced Johnson was leaving the series at #24. Two years of stories come to this moment. Optimus Prime vs. Megatron. The fate of the world goes to the winner.

TRANSFORMERS #24 by Johnson, Jorge Corona, Mike Spicer & Rus Wooton conclude their epic run before handing off to Kirkman and Mora in issue #25.

Let’s take one last ride with the team that redefined those who are “more than meets the eye.”

If anyone was thinking this was going to misfire, they are happily mistaken. The fight between Optimus and Megatron lives up to all hype. It is brutal, unapologetic & amazing all at once. Both warriors know this can only end one way. Even in his weakened state, Optimus remains true to his will of good. Megatron counters with his diabolic thirst for power. There is no line he won’t cross. This shows in the writing. His actions aren’t above reproach.

Megatron uses this to his favor. Readers see how he takes advantage of Prime’s good nature. There are a few challenges thrown into the mix which swings the fight. Johnson plays off this heel tactic perfectly. This leads to a few moments that hit all the marks of Transformers lore. There is no way to read this portion and not have a loud excited reaction. This spirals into another play of something Johnson had been building for a few issues now.

The long term books works to a thunderous turning point. Johnson’s writing staged every aspect out to maximize page time. It results in pushing towards an exclamation on the fight at hand. All roads lead to a bittersweet closing. Readers watch as the post battle calm starts sinking in. The dialogue leaves no doubt of what has transpired. More importantly, it give all something desperately needed to build from: Hope.

Corona, Spicer and Wooten leave it all on the pages for this finale. The full page image of Optimus and Megatron starts everything off in a wild frenzy. Following panels never let up on that energy. This even plays into a transformation mid blow! Throughout this fight, both express different views of this fight. Optimus shows caring for the humans. Megatron is all too happy to kill them to upset Prime. This factors into the stakes at hands.

Another near full shot shows Prime at a weakened point. This sets off an uncomfortable scene. Readers can feel the panic and fear taking over the panels. A two page splash changes the direction of this encounter. It is followed by a full page shot with simple dialogue. A smaller panel follows that changes everything. Knowing what it represents, it spirals into a newfound shot of adrenaline into the combat. A new full page image will have readers on their feet! Pacing hits an all time speed as the fight nears a climax. The fight ends with an unforgettable full page image. This moves everything into the closing pages.

Bittersweet is an understatement for here. Knowing the sheer hell on Earth that occurred, these panels mean so much more. It mirrors the message since issue one. Johnson and company close out with a very simple full page. Readers can’t ask for more of a fitting close.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

Daniel Warren Johnson leaves the series with a magnificent finale. The writing covers the field of emotions with Earth as the backdrop. Corona, Spicer and Wooten deliver a main event showdown second to none. The high level of storytelling is an epic series run that won’t be forgotten. Highest possible recommendation.

SPIDER-VERSE VS. VENOMVERSE #5 (MARVEL COMICS)

It all comes down to this! The Web-Heart & Hive-Mind feel they can’t co-exist. They have selected champions of Spider and Symbiote. Only one can win. Both sides have pushed the other to the breaking point. There’s been betrayals, unlikely partnerships & Mechas all involved (and that’s just for starters).

Now the unified fronts of Spider-Man and Venom must face off with countless reinforcements.

SPIDER-VERSE vs. VENOMVERSE #5 by Mat Groom, Kyle Higgins, Jim Towe, Rachelle Rosenberg and Travis Lanham bring forth the final chapter in this all-time face-off!

Let’s see how this all shapes up for the close!

One notable aspect of this series is the creative freedom the writing is having. Higgins & Groom keep finding new ways to present both Spidey and Venom. Merging the two via Blood transfusion opens up some doors. This leads into an interesting sequence before the final fight. Readers watch as the pairings take on the competition head on. It’s a throwdown worthy of finale status.

During the wild melee, one character stands out. The writing allows Eddie Brock to become something he’s struggled with: being a hero. Against his greatest “frenemy”, the conversation gives Brock validation on what he is doing. It is a moment that shifts everything. This pushes towards a very questionable conversation. The dialogue presents its case with little pushback. It serves as a solid landing spot for the conflict and overall plot. The fallout leaves many doors (and in one case aspirin) open to explore. It is a great ending to what has been a very fun read to experience.

Towe & Rosenberg open up with a welcome to an unlikely lead. The image of Spider-Venom is an amalgam of both which tips off the direction of the story. This jumpstarts the action as the final battle commences. There’s plenty of action to go around. Readers will enjoy all the mix and matches of combatants. Seeing Spider-Venom hyper uppercut Spider-Hulk is a prime example of this brawl for all.

Once Brock’s side is slipping, a huge back-up crashes the scene. The full page image is impressive and wild in the same breath. This allows for Brock to connect with a weakened Peter Parker. Watching the acceptance of his role, Brock’s confidence starts picking up. The images lock in on the painful history between both. Its’ fallout starts the closing off on a good note. The move throws a proposal into conversation. This results on impacting the parting images. The final page teases where this all may go form here. At worst case, it sends readers home on a pleased note.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The final face-off between Spider & Symbiote delivers on the action! Higgins & Groom takes readers along for an unlikely redemption story. Towe & Rosenberg present the huge conflict with exciting displays. The Spider-Man/Venom mythos takes a fun turn fans don’t want to miss!

X-MEN OF APOCALYPSE: ALPHA #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Magneto and Rogue married? The Summers brothers are not believing in Xavier’s dream? Wolverine and Jean Grey are together? Sabretooth is a noble hero?! What is happening here?!

In 1995, That was the reactions from X-Men fans. In the “Age Of Apocalypse” storyline. In said story, Xavier was accidently killed by Legion. This resulted in a spilt timeline where Apocalypse took over. All the X-line was transferred into this universe until the timeline was reset.

30 years later and those characters are returning to the Marvel Universe in a brand new series.

X-MEN OF APOCALYPSE: ALPHA #1 by Jeph Loeb, Simone Di Meo, and Richard Starkings begins an astonishing storyline.

Let’s see what happens when both universes collide.

X-MEN OF APOCALYPSE: ALPHA #1 by Jeph Loeb, Simone Di Meo, and Richard Starkings (Marvel Comics)

Loeb picks right up on that classic 90's era. Bringing in Blink and Sabretooth to open was the right call. It's instant fast paced action. As the other X-Characters come in, there is a subtle recap for new readers. The move takes nothing away from the story at hand. Even after finishing their mission, something still isn't right. Magneto is very self aware of this. His dialogue reflects he knows how the original AOA ended. Readers see how he has been making moves in the shadows. This does cause some friction in his team. The moments of doubt are only raised on a rescue mission.

Information is given that changes everything they know. Loeb poses a unique possibility on the table. This leads to a drastic call being made. It also leads into some moments which resonate with the past stories. New readers may not fully grasp Sabretooth's actions here. Readers of the original run definitely do. This X-Men team delivered on many classic elements which made them great. Years later and they pick right up without pause. This pushes towards a predictable yet strong close. Another old friend returns on the final page which can only spell more drama to be had.

Di Meo is the perfect artist for this series. His style captures the Joe Mad vibe from the "Astonishing" line where the majority of this group is from. The two page splash with Blink, Wild Child and Sabretooth is phenomenal. Everything about this altercation with Havok feels sleek and intense. It encompassed the stakes at hand. The conclusion of their fight is very electric. This is largely due to Gambit's arrival via full page panel. The emotions start brewing until events shift back to the X-Leader: Magneto.

Readers see the wear on his mind as he puts events into perspective. The rescue mission at hand unveils a larger problem at hand. A strong two page splash shows the root of this issue. It causes some unlikely responses from the team. Magneto's call starts a few ripple effects with members. None are stronger than Blink and Sabretooth. The art captures their bond as they prepare for the unknown. Rogue and Gambit have a heavy moment right before the close. A solid two page splash welcomes the AoA to the 616. They are also met by an old friend on the last page. Another full page image stops the show for now but certainly not for good.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

Very rarely can an event recapture the magic of its' predecessor project completely. In this chapter, Loeb and Di Meo found a way to take readers back to 1995 without feeling dated. The writing brings out the vintage winning elements of the X-Men. Bold and exciting images guide readers into this new timeline. There's no time like the present to see why this past story is the future.

FREE PLANET #5 (IMAGE COMICS)

Lutheria might be free, but not without a heavy cost. As the planet won its’ way to complete freedom, more problems arose. The Freedom Guard is doing all they can to hold it together. Juggling the complex politcal landscape has been tricky. Fending off the Orouran Empire from taking their Orchaleum is a whole other ball of wax.

Let’s not forget the ultimate wild card: Jackson Crater.

Sitterson brings the action early in this chapter. The fight with the Empires Marines is violent and unremorseful. It delivers on the high stakes elements of this series There is no sugarcoating the struggles. Gloria’s speech of inspiration leads the Guard into drastic measures, The result ends with a small win for now but for how long. It is easy to see this calm won’t last forever.

Readers also get a flashback to Basil and Katja. Their story shows the tragic fallout and strain of present day. The moment teases more intrigue as Basil talks of his beliefs. This segways into Crater’s time to steal the show. His dialogue presents a very grounded look at the toll taken for fighting. For being the loose cannon, Crater shows he might be on to everything more than thought. The writing also allows for Keen and Gloria to get key character moments. This all gives way towards a frightening close. The final pages tease something wicked is en route and Lutheria’s dream may be a nightmare.

Doughtery & Astone bring out the ugliness of global protection with the opening. The battle with the Marines is strong and brutal. Two page splashes ushers in the Guard to stand their ground. It locks in on the tough calls and ramifications of their actions. There is a huge sense of tension when these pages hit.

Once events shift to Basil, the pace slows down. Readers see the tragic start of his issues. It leads into a present day conversation. The two page splash accompanying it throws more questions into the mix. It is quickly upstages by Crater’s breakdown of events. The reflection of Freedom’s cost is very blunt. Readers can easily see the wear on his soul from the fight. Other members get some time but not as solid as these two points. The closing throws more trouble in the guards way. Seeing what’s on the horizon, it leaves readers with a sense of impending worry and doubt. There’s nothing easy about freedom.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The Freedom Guard have their most brutal combat to date within these pages. Sitterson throws many looks at readers with the writing. Doughtery & Astone craft strong imagery to assist in driving the key plots home. Who thought Freedom would ever be this complex?

Anger has turned into a double edged gift to Saoirse. The young witch has used it as fuel on this latest adventure. It has also caused many fractures in relationships. Saoirse banished Hugh away. She’s also scared her brother Brahm off of trusting her. This is a fine line for her to walk.

Can she keep balance long enough to defeat the Cailleach?

McCreery devotes a good portion of the book onto Hugh. The banished companion refuses to quit helping. His banter with Aisling proves entertaining. It allows him to vent some frustration before resuming his role. This is a very different scene than Saoirse sees herself in. The conversation with Nan leads to a surprise & needed talk. Saoirse’s heartfelt moment with her mother gives a refueled sense of purpose. There are many emotions on display before resuming her mission.

Readers watch as Saoirse arrives at the Cailleach location. The pages create a sense of worry as the young witch advances. It leads into a questionable choice. The ramifications have to wait as the spotlight moves to Nan. Seeing her react to Hugh’s return tips off a greater threat than readers would think. Even with a brief interlude of witches can’t derail this impact. It moves pages into the shocking close. The dialogue dances around true motives. McCreery crafts many misdirections as to who is the real villain here. All is exposed in a heartbreaking final page. That image won’t escape readers minds as a play has been made that changes everything.

Glass & Nesterenko present Hugh’s point with some entertaining spots. His facial expressions showcase overconfidence into the questions posed. Aisling in squirrel form breaks some of the heavier panels before her true reveal. A full page image caps this portion off on a high note. This aura leaves when Saoirse enters the panels.

Her initial moments spotlight her worry of Brahm takes center stage. Nan’s dialogue doesn’t assist in healing her. Once the dream-esque portion with her mother kicks in opens the door on the emotions. It’s a great segway to putting Saoirse in position for her confrontation. The art displays the treacherous area she travels in. A near full panel shows a door that unlocks more than bargained. Nothing prepares readers for the Hugh return. Once here, the panels keep everyone on edge of what’s going on. It creates a great mystery right to the end. The final panel will hit hard as an event goes down that there’s no turning back from. Ramifications will be huge.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

Saoirse’s anger has taken hold and struggles to let go. McCreery weaves in some mystery amongst the emotional pulls. Glass & Nesterenko give readers many views of what is really happening with strong art. Brace for that final page!

RADIANT BLACK #37 (MASSIVE-VERSE/IMAGE COMICS)

Chicago is not the same “Windy City” of old. In the wake of the Catalyst War, it is still recovering into its’ new stat quo. Another person trying to find his way is Marshall Ward. His life was forever changed in the Massive-verse event. After defeating Jaeger, Radiant Black wants to get back to a sense of normalcy. It seems that chances of that are all a dream.

Anytime you have Shift and Radiant Red in a book, it’s definitely got my attention. Making them a couple? This has some great storyline possibilities. It temporarily breaks away from the dictator-esque state of Chicago. Readers see how the city is under lockdown. Jack Marlow & The Franklin Group have enforced their grip on the people. The moments unfortunately mirror current events. It doesn’t escape the dialogue. Marshall’s voice becomes one of reason in a dire time.

Readers see more clues come into focus about Marlow’s moves. Watching a resistance group plan addresses the “Second earthers” dilemma. They are quickly thwarted by a certain pair of lovebirds. Adding them into the overall picture complicates certain areas. It also as previously eluded to makes for endless possibilities. Their interaction with Marshall sets forth new boundaries. Shift’s decree overshadows Date night with Mari. The writing shows Marshall’s attempt for a normal break. This becomes upstaged by the close. Marlow’s plans come into focus in a huge way. It is a clear message to readers how the stakes have been raised. Excellent chapter to read.

Costa returns to art duties for this chapter. The foreshadowing of Red and Shift works for the payoff later. Lakeview on lockdown sends a disheartening message to kick events off. The two page splash expands on that uneasiness. Marlow’s new “enforcers” make an impression as being reckless. This doesn’t go unnoticed as Radiant Black hits the scene. Another solid two page splash addresses the trouble brewing. From here, there is no looking back.

Shift and Red bring the action to a resistance group. They come barging in via full page panel. Readers will love seeing a Fastball special done in the melee. The art hits the fast paced points while Shift banters. It leads to an awkward meeting with Radiant Black. The expressions on display speak volumes. This gives a transition to date night. These panels tease some happiness in Marshall’s life. It is fleeting as the ending reminds readers of the new landscape. The closing page will cause many questions as more trouble is on the horizon. The art hits the bullseye with this chapter.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Dark times loom in Chicago as Jack Marlow’s plans start taking form. Higgins and Clark bring this era in with string writing. Costa and Fernandes’ art deliver on action and tense situations. Readers are really going to see what kind of hero Marshall Ward is very soon.

A new day has dawned in the House of Wayne. Bruce and Damian have had quite the stretch run of cases. With an unlikely night off, the plan is family bonding. There is one small problem with this idea.

Johnson takes readers into on a journey of reclamation with this chapter. The opening pages introduce a man with a sense of purpose. He is searching for a hidden box. Inside is belongings of a past life. It teases a return to an old life. The dialogue carries pain with its words. Considering where he is heading, the man knows this feeling all too well.

As for the dynamic duo, their usual business runs stat quo. After taking out Tiger Shark, the mood changes to a more grounded sense. Batman transitions to Bruce Wayne. The writing shows how Bruce wants to give Damian a “normal” life. It is a very big switch from their normal days. Readers watch as Wayne is committed to make this happen. Knowing how they have been strained over the course of the series, it is a big task.

Much can be felt in the “Quiet Man”s moves. Readers watch as he makes a play with grave consequences. Taking a fight right to Gotham’s head crime boss is a gamble. The writing paces out the attack to showcase the desperate attempt. It conveys a feel of redemption. This builds into the closing act. Readers watch as a night off may just have gone up in smoke.

Ossio & Maiolo take over art duties with a mighty debut. The introduction to the “Quiet Man” carries a silent aura. It is a monster contrast from Gotham City. The action is flying off the page with Batman & Robin going to work. A near full page panel welcomes the Dark Knight into the middle of a fire fight. Every scene feels big and loud. THIS is what you want to see when the duo is at work!

Readers also see the Boy Wonder get major page time. Damian’s motorcycle work doesn’t disappoint. It leads to a fantastic full page image ending the fight. The aftermath gives a needed pause after the fast pacing. It shows the father and son having a time of bonding. In comparison to the Quiet Man, their night is a snooze fest. The art builds up every move until the explosive confrontation. It is non stop combat right to the final panel. Once here, the message is loud and clear. It screams “No quiet night in Gotham for the heroes” as the action continues to flow.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

No good deeds got unpunished for the Dynamic Duo. Johnson throws many looks into the pair’s relationship via the writing. Ossio & Maiolo deliver in electric action sequences that never let up. Readers better buckle in for the long haul with this new arc.

Since its debut, “Dark Patterns” has thrilled fans with its look at Batman’s early years. The cases featured have pushed an inexperienced Dark Knight to his limits. It has helped forged Bruce Wayne in becoming the World’s Greatest Detective.

One more case is left on the docket. Standing to close to Gotham’s flame might be more than Bats can handle.

Watters takes Batman into a dangerous road for this final case. Over the course of the series, the wear of being Gotham’s protector has been growing. Wayne is recovering from a gunshot wound in the beginning pages. He is helpless to stop a pyrotechnic from gruesomely attacking a couple. The writing indicates how this crime is taking over Jim Gordon’s world. It leaves him with a tough call to make. Luckily, there is more help coming his way.

Readers see that Batman is already processing clues from the past. The insight starts peeling back layers of a deeper crime. This inquiry takes Gordon to the heart of the matter. It provides a faster pace as Gordon becomes lost in the deep scheming. The result gives readers much to cheer as the event takes a heroic turn. This pushes the story into its’ close. Watters has thrown many curves into this series overall. The final page proves he has more left up his sleeve before bowing out.

Sherman and Farrell start events with a haunting recap of where this series has been. Watching the use of a flame as panels is next level creative. It makes the criminal activity pop off the page. This moves into a startling attack. The near full pages leave no doubt on what evil is looming. This is a big contrast to a wounded Bat. Seeing the breakdown shows how human the vigilante is. The two page splash shows what has been building in the shadows. It couldn’t come at a more worse time.

As Gordon picks up the investigation, the art leans into the trap at hand. The near full shot of a burning Bat instantly connects with the audience. Sherman keeps building up the suspense as Gordon starts slipping away. There is a face-off that indicates the madness swirling around. It leads into a dramatic rescue via near full page. The fallout teases what’s next to come. It doesn’t compare to the final page. Secrets are unveiled as readers depart with an image that shakes everything up. It’s another strong display of imagination with page set-ups. Another winning factor to this series.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.4

The final case of “Dark Patterns” begins on a strong note. Watters constructs an intriguing start filled with mystery. Sherman and Farrell continue to find new ways of elevating the visuals. Until further notice, this is THE best Batman book at the shops!’

ACTION COMICS #1090 (DC COMICS)

A good deed never goes unpunished. Years ago, Clark Kent goes to Metroplois for a day at the Expo Of Tomorrow. When evil strikes, the Boy of Steel acts. This causes him to be introduced to the world when the media catches wind. The Kents thought returning home to Smallville would be an escape. Sadly, that wasn’t the case.

One of Clark’s high school teachers knows Superboy’s struggle. Captain Comet has come to Superboy’s life offering some guidance. It doesn’t take long for the helping hand to start revealing his true intentions.

The early days of Superboy hit some very familiar themes. Waid steers young Clark into a path of not just discovering his abilities. He leans into Clark exploring how to be human. The opening sequence is a fun look at Clark testing his abilities. Readers see the heartwarming looks as the Kents deal with his growing capabilities. This is a solid compliment to the Lana Lang meeting. The dialogue is very vintage as Clark’s reactions to Lana’s reveal is a standard superhero problem. It sets up for a good transition to the main event.

Readers watch as the naivety of Clark provides a downfall. The action ramps up as he comes to an unknown location. Waid sprinkles in a great cameo as Superboy heads into conflict. The writing shows his mistakes front and center. It also ties into a few more Superman elements before finishing on a steady landing. The close teases more challenges to come. It’s not reinventing the wheel. The story just reminds everyone how a legacy is never easy to start.

Patridge & Plascencia start off the chapter with a light-hearted look at Clark’s training. The “World Tour” showcases his skills and the need for better uniforms. The art swings into the high school drama quickly. Readers see the awkwardness of Clark to Lana’s charm. This proves to be a nice sub-plot as the action is about to begin.

Once on his mission, Clark bursts on the page via half panel. The art brings out the most form these scenes. There isn’t anything over the top as far as true danger. Readers sense the direct nature of the stand-off. Even as a certain green rock is brought in, the art nails its key points. It results in a shocking close. The final page wastes no time in saying expect the unexpected. Growing pains for a legendary hero.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

Superboy learns the hard way not everyone is here to help. Waid pens a classic tail of heroics & heart with the writing. Patridge & Plascencia’s art present a vintage look at the beginning times. The story has been a great throwback to the construction of the Man of Tomorrow.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #8 (DC COMICS)

In Space, no one can make you feel. This is all due to Starbreaker. Working with Sorrow, they have stolen all emotion in the universe via a new power battery. In their wake is a very depleted Green Lantern Corps. A few lanterns made a risky bet to venture into the Source Wall. Taking along some of the GLC’s finest, they find some much needed sense of purpose.

What they unlocked will either say the day or doom the entire universe! Lanterns, Avatars & Sun-Eaters, oh my!

Right from the start, readers are thrown into a conflict of epic proportion. After losing at the Source Wall, Starbreaker crashes back to Oa. His message is simple. He states the Lanterns are coming & kill everyone! Readers see what’s about to unfold with The Lanterns arriving with Emotional Spectrum Avatars. Adams & Hampton hit the gas pedal early as the fight instantly starts. It’s as classic of a Green Lantern fight that readers know and love.

Another character winds up playing a larger role than expected. The writing depicts a sense of remorse of actions taken. It conveys a sense of redefined purpose. At this stage in the story, it didn’t seem as organic as it should be. The inner monologue displayed explains why this all happened, but still feels off. This spirals into a drastic action taken. Readers watch as the event becomes a catalyst to end the fight once and for all. Its’ fallout leaves an unsteady calm to where events should be. Once the closing begins, a new challenge arises. How this new threat factors in will be anyone’s guess.

Pasarin and the art team lean heavy into the action. The giant two page splash signals the main event has arrived. It doesn’t take long before the battle gets vicious. Seeing Sinestro unleash a Red Lantern strike sends a clear message. Even Guy Gardner takes a small break form being Guy to show this isn’t a regular fight. This forces Starbreaker to go all in for the win. A full page image shows the extremes he’s heading to for a victory.

Readers watch as the play starts turning the tide. The art shows a surprise factor come into the spotlight. As the fight continues, pacing slows down to focus on the choice being made. The fallout spins into a very loud full page combat ending. This disperses a ripple effect for the heroes involved. In dealing with emotions as a power source, this never left the Corps expressions. Even in the aftermath, the gravity of what just happened never leaves panels. The only break from this mood occurs with the final page. A haunting full page image leaves Readers wondering what’s next as the battle is far from over.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

The Corps takes its’ last shot against Starbreaker’s forces with a thrilling chapter. Adams and Hampton give readers a heavy action packed tale. Pasarin and the art team lock in on the high stakes involved. The ending throws more complications in the heroes way. Fans wouldn’t want it any other way.

The legend of Camelot has invaded modern times in a monster way! A large stone crashes from the sky around a group of unsuspecting children. They have now become involved in a conflict of good versus evil. Are they up to the challenge or is a new Dark Age on the horizon?

Considering the creative team behind “Seven Secrets” is behind this project is one thing. It is the first time since 2022 that Tom Taylor & Daniele Di Nicuolo have teamed up on a book together. Factor in this is a creator owned series at DC Comics and expectations are huge!

Taylor throws readers a fresh take on the classic themes with this chapter. The opening sequence sets a solid pace with the mystery at hand. It quickly shifts to meeting the young heroes in their ordinary lives. The writing showcases just enough of their personalities to have readers invested in who they are. Fel and Connor seem to have a rivalry forming. How this factors in with the rest of their group will be something to watch.

Readers see the whole group together as they start “a quest”. The dialogue is fun as they interact. In these moments, it is very clear Connor is a breakout character. Once destiny finds them, the story takes a dramatic turn. Pacing speeds things up to where the key points are hit. The writing doesn’t go overboard in elaborate details. It doesn’t need to. The group must adapt on the fly which rushes the book towards its’ close. There’s a sense of wonder forming as the closing panel hits. It leaves many possibilities for where things go from here. That’s never a bad problem to have with a new series.

Di Nicuolo & Beredo bring some energetic events to the forefront here. The starting pages tease the suspense of “The Hill.” This feeling switches gears Fel & Connor’s game. Readers watch as the soccer match spills into a brief glimpse into each’s character. The facial expressions tip off Fel’s disinterest in what her mom is wanting. This allows her (and the readers) to segway into the “mission” at hand.

The group meets the audience via full page panel. Connor’s disinterest shines in these panels. There isn’t too much time to focus on this aspect. The stone’s crash landing is given a near full page intro. It results in the young heroes exploring what they’ve found. Another full page image steers the story into a new direction. The art moves at a sleek speed during this commotion. From an explosive full page to bold panels, readers know something is unfolding. This moves into a synopsis of what’s coming. Readers watch as the group must react quickly. With the final panel, much is eluded to of a destiny forever changed. The art lands at a solid spot with much still left on the horizon.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

A re-imagining of King Arthur lore wastes no time in presenting an enjoyable start. Taylor’s writing delves into sorcery & social hijinx. Di Nicuolo & Beredo craft an energetic mood with the art. Pulling this on NCBD is much like pulling Excalibur: A huge win for whoever holds it.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #12 (DC COMICS)

BATMAN is breaking. Bruce Wayne’s crusade for justice has brought him to BANE. Their initial encounter ended badly for Gotham’s vigilante. His body and mind have suffered. The scars from this encounter stretch far beyond anyone’s comprehension.

There is nothing off limits to Bane’s attack. Not even friends and family…

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #12 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, & Clayton Cowles continues Bane’s attempt to fully break the Bat.

If there was ever a question of Bane’s true potential as a villain, this issue answers all. Snyder unleashes the walking powerhouse in his most vicious form. Even as Bruce gets some much needed help, the aftermath of Bane takes hold. The transformation of Waylon Jones is prime example. Their opening sequence slowly peels back the pain caused. Readers see Batman at a low point that only sinks further.

Once Bruce returns to Gotham, he quickly sees more irrevocable damage. The writing holds nothing back. This is all on Bruce’s shoulders to burden. Readers see what Bane has done on a personal level. Snyder pens the uncomfortable moments with a grounded sense of sorrow. The innocence of Bruce’s friends are gone. All that’s left is dreams of another time. This pushes Alfred into the forefront. Their encounter shows some similarities to past encounters. Being in the Absolute Universe, these moments have more sting to them. It leads into another confrontation long in the making. This chapter may define what the Absolute universe is all about.

Dragotta and Martin return for art duties & hit the ground running. Their depiction of Killer Croc is scene stealing. Everything about this sequence tells the painful result of Batman’s actions. Croc’s yelling at Bruce jumps out due to Cowles’ lettering. This eases readers back into the re-emergence in Gotham. His time with Martha Wayne fills panels with emotions. It might be the only “happy” event of this chapter.

As Bruce goes to check on his friends, the mood instantly changes. Readers watch as Ozzie, Harvey & Edward’s meeting with Bane came with serious repercussions. The images show the dark side of super heroics in full force. Adding the flashback panels only amplifies the heavy toll. This pushes Batman into facing his doubts head on. The final pages start with a strong full page shot of Bats and a friend bracing for what’s coming. This results in a parting closing page that’s going to have some tough conversations. A fitting end to a tragic chapter.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

Editor’s Note: The two main stories are penned by Kelly. These are the short tales to celebrate the milestone occasion.

“Rapid Return” by Ahmed, Pérez & Hollowell dives into a hero trying to fill Spidey’s void. The writing locks in on a reluctant soul trying to do good. Readers have some great panels of action. Seeing the face-off with Boomerang gives way to a heavy burden lifted. Readers see how the art walks them through Rapid’s thoughts. It’s a nice compliment to the Web-Head’s Legacy.

Gatlin steps in for “Spider Mayonnaise”. It’s a fun story about the struggles of the perfect sandwich. The tale plays into the quirkiness Spidey is known for. Short, sweet and to the point.

“In the City..” is a fun nod to Spider-Man and NYC. Loo brings to life a normal swing through the City. It is a solid piece to end events after 975 issues.

As for “Broken Mirror”, Kelly throws some wild curves into the puzzling case. The flashback moment with Pete as “Young Cap” is a heartwarming one. It is much different than the current state of affairs. “Peter” and “Spider-Man” continue their face-off from last issue. After some punches thrown, the ruse begins to fall apart.

Readers see the reveal slowly unveil itself. It is a surprise that makes ironic sense. This spills into the abrupt end of their fight. Kelly brings in Felicia Hardy as another voice in the matter provides some breaks in the drama. Their experience is one that leads into the other major reveal. The monologue flowing the pages belongs to an unlikely source. How this ultimately plays out is going to be a can’t miss moment.

Romita Jr. & company kick events off with a classic throwback. It’s a strong contrast from where the present events start. The art doesn’t wait long to throw hands with the parties involved. A two page split rings the bell for the combustible fight. Pacing picks up until its time for the first reveal.

Readers watch the subtle acts leading into this stage. The close-up on the changing face leads to a more clear resolution of the fight. Its’ complimented by the Tombstone cameo. The cold expressions never stray too far away. This is very unlikely the erratic “Peter.” The art spotlights the true intentions of this character. Twisted is an understatement. Readers get their other reveal in a more calm way. Panel structure eases into the twist flawlessly. This helps to transition where the book goes next.

Kelly does answer the question of “Who is Peter Parker” in the second story. Having him FAR away from NYC is an understatement. Space odysseys are tricky involving the Web Head. In this circumstance, the writing allows him to be rebuilt with mixed results.

Winding up on a spaceship is one thing. Working with Xanto proves to be more deceptive in nature. It gives a touch of Hollywood Horror movies. At any given moment, the shoe will drop. Kelly starts this off with a shocking moment. Xanto’s push for scientific growth turns in a dastardly manner. This leads into a predictable but still exciting fight. Once a winner is declared, the final panel leaves way more questions than answers. This gets a huge assist from the art.

“Broken Man” lets Larraz tear loose on the images. Seeing a broken Peter on a near full shot makes a big statement. The use of smaller panels illustrates how much time has wore Parker down. This changes after a space rescue. A near full shot displays Parker in much better shape. This moves into his new surroundings which are anything but normal.

Readers get a near full shot of Xanto’s secrets. The eventual turn pivots into an excellent fight. It leads to some excellent action shots. Larraz completely understands how to maximize every strike thrown. It doesn’t matter of panel size. There is no wasted motion. The real “return” of Spider-Man is given a full page panel. This results in more great action shots before the startling close. Readers see more than bargained for on the final panel. It sends the issue into its’ bonus tales with much intrigue. Can’t ask for much more than that.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

After 975 issues, the world of Spider-Man still remains Amazing in its’ adventures. Kelly shakes up the status quo with his stories. Romita Jr., Larraz and their teams take readers on quite the journey. Factor in the great side tales & you have the formula for a winning anniversary issue.

JSA #11 (DC COMICS)

The end is here! After an overwhelming attack, The Injustice Society has their prize. They have found the Spear of Destiny! With it comes power unlikely anything the world can handle. It’s up to the JSA to stop them but can they?

At each turn, they have been dealt crushing defeats. Wildcat killed. Hawkman in limbo. Dr. Fate’s helmet stolen. It’s all just the tip of an evil iceberg. It’s now or never for the Justice Society. One final round. Winner take all!

With such a large cast, ensuring all roads lead in the same direction is tough. In this case, Lemire gives a healthy shove to position players for the final showdown. There is some resolutions for sub-plots looming. Hourman and Jessie Quick are prime examples.

Their story felt lost but at least is given a finish point for now. This is merged into Dr. Mid-Nite’s dilemma which ushers in the next phase for the JSA.

Readers watch as more returning heroes enter the fray. This appears on surface to give the JSA a fighting chance. Once the brief skirmish with the Injustice Society ends, the dialogue speeds towards a refocus. This is a recurring theme for the majority of the book.

There are some key spots that continue to help grow some hope. Obsidion’s reunion is a definite crowd pleaser. The writing conveys this sense of the tide turning to the close. In a few brief pages, that feeling disappears. It is replaced with an overwhelming doom. The final page drops an exclamation point on that statement before departing.

The chapter fills in many gaps before bringing the team all together. How long they survive will be the question on readers mind heading into the next chapter.

Olortegui and Guerrero bring the emotional side of the JSA out from the beginning. The Hourman/Jessie portion runs a gauntlet of phases. It’s met with the same varying sense as Dr. Mid-Nite is inserted into plans.

The art teases some action with a strong two page splash. With Kid Eternity leading Hawkman and Hawkgirl into battle, the moment delivers a small victory. Fleeting but effective in creating some possible light in their current woes.

From this point, the majority of action is on hold. The panels lock in on the many reactions to recent events. This works to build up the eventual final stand. Some may not like this staging but it works once the closing hits. The reunion image with Obsidian is gifted a near full shot. It provides his story payoff before the end pages begin.

Readers can only watch as Wotan’s plans are in full motion. The look of fear on the heroes faces screams out what is coming. There is no question of an over-reaction here. The final full page brings out a true terror. It is the perfect set-up for the end looming in the background.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

The final stand of the JSA is has arrived as Ragnarok takes hold! Lemire’s writing speeds everyone to the endgame. Olortegui & Guerrero lock in on the emotional tolls taken in the fight against insurmountable odds. The time for talking is now over. All that’s left is a fight for everything next chapter. Get ready.

A demon has captured Krypton’s last son. Ra’s Al Ghul’s Lazarus Corporation made a dangerous move. With BRAINIAC pulling the strings, Superman was lured into a trap. The goal is something very sinister. The Demon’s Head wants an heir. Who better than the Man Of Tomorrow?

Let’s take a closer look to see how this plays out!

Give credit where it’s due. Aaron isn’t afraid to take the Superman mythos into dark avenues. This is primarily shown with Brainaic. Turning him into a more unhinged monster proves for quite the entertaining read. His dialogue with the stoic Al Ghul clashes just enough to tease their plans. Knowing what they have with Superman, it leaves no question of Al Ghul’s interest in him as an heir.

This leads into some disturbing mental torturing. Readers watch as each attempt to corrupt Kal-El intensifies. It also brings into play his allies in the fight against Lazarus. Aaron gives just enough page time to the Lois/Talia face-off to impact events. In the end, one plot takes center stage. The writing taps into an inner strength to become the deciding factor. It mirrors much of what fans love of Superman. The result is an explosive series of events. One of which becomes a tragic causality of Al Ghul’s schemes. This builds towards a very fast-paced finish. It leaves readers with a sense of anxious doubt going forward& wanting more.

Di Giandomenico and Arreola know how to tap into the insanity of this Brainiac. Having Kal-El “relive” a last moment of Krypton delivers on a combustible scenario. Once the smoke clears, the tension never leaves. Readers watch as the face-off between Brainaic and Al Ghul is direct and unapologetic. It conveys how prized their prisoner is. Failure is clearly not an option. This is shown on Brainaic’s face from here until the end of chapter.

The art delivers on a few fantastic “nightmare” images. A full page of Superman flying is excellent (even with the damage around). This takes a side step to build up the Talia/Lois confrontation. Both wear their rage on their sleeves. The art locks in on the anger during these panels. Only Brainaic’s crazed looks provide a detour from the drama. All events move towards a superb turning point. Readers see Superman reach deep to find hope. It is a moment much needed at this stage of Kal’s story. The fallout becomes very chaotic. It concludes with a final page and many questions. Another fun visual ride to be had.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Can Brainaic break a steel heart? That is the question posed in this chapter. Aaron’s writing never lets up on the pressure of events. Di Giandomenico and Arreola unlock the insanity of Brainiac into full view. The result is an issue you don’t want to miss at the shops.
