Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have arrived at the pen-ultimate issue of one of the best series on the Comixology Originals line via Best Jackett Press. Barnstormers gives readers a mystery behind a pair of unlikely partners turned lovers that has been quite the impressive read. Barnstormers #4 by Scott Snyder, Tula Lotay, Dee Cunniffe and Richard Starkings sees the aerial escapades of Bix and Tillie pushed to the limit with danger closing on on them at every turn. Let’s not delay any longer and see if the high-flying duo can keep their pasts at bay long enough to fly another day, shall we?

Hawk E. Baron aka Bix is an aerial showman post his time as a pilot in World War 1. His chosen profession has led him to many towns but one fateful flight has changed everything. Bix crashes (literally) into the wedding of Peyton Carlyle and Tillie. Being of wealth and arrogance, Carlyle doesn’t appreciate Bix crashing his wedding and holds him prisoner on the family’s estate. Later that night, Tillie surprisingly frees Bix and the pair escapes. This doesn’t sit well with Peyton who hires Zeke West, a man with experience in these situations, to get Tillie back.

Meanwhile, Bix and Tillie start hitting town after town and stealing from the wealthy in the process. Love blossoms in an unexpected way, but both are tentative to divulge details of their pasts. While their love grows, so does Carlyle’s rage to get Tillie back. Accompanied by West, Carlyle runs into Bix and Tillie at a mansion party in Florida. An enraged Carlyle starts chasing the pair through the house, firing his gun at them. One missed shot results in a fire breaking out. The pair makes their dramatic escape while Peyton stands in front of the burning mansion.

This issue opens up with Tillie planning a surprise for Bix. Readers witness a brief montage of how Tillie has grown deeper in her confidence and love since pairing with Bix. The surprise in question is tailor-made flying costumes. Unfortunately, their happiness here is short lived as Tillie opens up a newspaper to see the pair featured in a two-page headline claiming the aerial team are murderers. The pair is being blamed for the fatal fire started when Carlyle fired his gun inside the mansion.

How does the pair react to the news? After a brief discussion, one makes a game-changing move to remedy the situation. Readers get a ring-side seat to watching how that simple choice spirals into more with dire consequences. Factor in Carlyle looming in the wings and the tension becomes explosive! The story really picks up a fast pace at this stage. Just when you think the moments can not get any worse, One major action is taken that solidifies there is no going back from here. Heading into the finish line now, readers will get the feel that love may not conquer all in the finale with the ending panel moments.

Bix and Tillie’s story takes some dramatic twists with this issue. Readers see how committed Bix is to Tillie with what he’s willing to do to solve their latest problem. The dialogue hits the desperation in his voice to set forth the next series of events. Tillie also gets her standout moments. Knowing what kind of danger they are in now brings out a frantic reaction. Carlyle’s time in this issue will cement how tragic the finale will be. Seeing the dynamic between these three characters ties together how emotional of a ride is unfolding. The ending act flows very fast but takes nothing away from its’ impact. Heading into the finale, this issue builds towards a huge closing chapter.

Lotay’s art is amazing bringing a few key moments to greater heights. Tillie’s reaction to seeing the two page headline was priceless. The fear and shock she has in her eyes pops off the page. It’s matched with a series of panel reactions from Bix. When he figures out something has happened, the coloring and facial reaction conveys such a strong point. Carlyle’s time in this issue is another great example that readers will have many reactions to as well. The final moments bring readers to the boiling point of the drama happening here. The emotional pay-off connects and will drive the excitement into the finale.

FINAL POINT: Barnstormers #4 soars into its’ closing issue with a very powerful read. There is no shortage of impactful storytelling as the high-flying duo’s race to outrun their pasts soars to new heights. Snyder, Lotay and the team present the latest chapter of Bix and Tillie with fantastic writing and art. This issue is the reason any comic fan needs to sign up for Comixology Originals so make sure you don’t miss this!

For this entry, we're checking out the final issue of a great series on the ComiXology Originals line. CENSUS #5 by Marc Bernardin, Adam Freeman, Sebastian Piriz, Bernardo Brice and Sarah Litt has been a great mix of humor and drama with a main character you can't help but root for. Heading into the final issue, everyone's favorite census taker was walking on thin ice. Let's see if it gave way during the conclusion, shall we?

Liam Malone simply can NOT catch a break. A down on his luck loser, Malone thinks he finally catches a break when he lands a job at the census bureau. Door-to-door counting? Sounds easy right? Wrong. The division Malone is hired for by Mr. Pictor is the supernatural one. Liam’s daily interactions are with demons, leprechauns, and shape shifters, etc. Since signing his name on the dotted line, Liam’s life has been anything but normal.

The only “bright” spot in Liam’s life has been Lilith, a demon whom he “got close with” on his first day on the job. Malone is drawing the attention of his boss with warnings of trouble with his actions not following the job guidelines. On some of these assignments, Liam has let his conscious be his guide with mixed results.

Most recently, his attempt to give ghosts of enslaved peoples closure to liberate them from their current location results in the hijacking of the 22nd annual African American Heritage Parade! Now, Liam has been arrested for his actions with Mr. Pictor fuming mad.

This issue opens up with Liam making fast friends in his holding cell. After a few hours, Liam is freed on bail by Lilith. At this moment, Liam professes his love for Lilith and before he gets an answer back, Mr. Pictor shows up thru a portal, initiating the consequences he warned Liam about if he didn’t stick to the job requirements.

Liam was told there would be “Hell t Pay” and he begins to find out first hand Mr. Pictor wasn’t kidding around. The story takes readers on a wild trip that slows down due to a run-in from Lilith with a possible solution. What kind of mess has Liam gotten himself in now? Is there a possibility for a happy ending for Liam and Lilith? What does Nu Metal have to do with all of this?

The finale takes readers into a deep look at Liam’s growth as a human being while not losing his down on his luck charm. The closing act presents a few new possibilities opening for Liam and company which is something for fans to wait and see play out. Solid conclusion for this volume.

Bernardin and Freeman gibe Liam Malone a fitting send-off in the final issue of this arc. Liam’s growth from walked on to walking tall has been a fun journey to witness. The writing has been well-timed comedy which off set the crazy situations Liam finds himself in. The relationship with Lilith has been a strong point of this series. It’s arguably the most “normal” part of this book but grounds the story enough for readers to become connected to the characters. This issue exemplifies that point. Seeing how the resolution to Liam’s dilemma shapes up for the future made for a fitting closing … for now.

Piriz brings out a great deal of Liam’s charm with the visuals in this issue. From the early moments in jail where he’s talking about his problems, the mood is light-hearten and balances out the drama with his feelings towards Lilith. However, it will be the problem with Mr. Pictor’s punishment that makes the strongest impact with the art. There’s a great full page panel that brings up certain time periods of Liam which sets the pace for this direction of the story. Factor this in with the final closing moments for a few key players and readers will have some enjoyable parting images to witness on the way to the finish.

FINAL POINT: Census #5 bids a proper goodbye to Liam Malone and his quirky work-life balance with a delightful finale. Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz and the team pack the humor with the drama to continue the winning format of this series right to the final page. Don’t finish your NCBD pulls without making a stop to Comixology for this one!

For this entry, we're checking out a return of a series with quite the buzz around it. Edgeworld #6 by Chuck Austen, Patrick Olliffe, Lee Loughridge, and Jodi Wynne for Comixology Originals has a lot of readers attention and rightfully so. The science-fiction western saga is in animation development for Amazon Studios while vol. 1 (issues 1-5) is now in print via Dark Horse Comics. Will all this momentum, let's take a closer look and see how this series returns, shall we?

Edgeworld #6 - On Sale January 17th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

If you’re new to this franchise, the story centers around Killian Jess, a soldier turned magistrate on the planet Pala. Along side Cheela, a resident of Pala, Jess fights all types of adversaries that would do harm on this violate planet that he’s trying to save. The wild, wild west, energy is very noticeable throughout this series but has other elements going on that makes it stand out form most.

This issue opens up with a Palan stage line transporting a group of individuals through rough terrain. On the stage coach, a man who two alien companions is trying to spark up some conversation with another passenger. The ice breaker: mentioning the man’s boots as United Authority issued, and thanking him for “saving” Pala. The reaction from a fellow passenger is not one of compliments. It is of frustration and anger. That reaction comes from a young Cheela. The man replies back abrasive to Cheela which only escalates things. It is only until Killian Jess jumps in with a boot to the man’s throat that cooler heads start to prevail…or does it?

All it takes is one slick comment and business resumes. The end result is Jess and Cheela kicked off the coach! From here, it's a long walk to the Moonlight, an establishment of an old friend: Shay! The pair catches up with a solid conversation between Shay and Jess about Cheela. However, that gets interrupted when trouble has followed them to The Moonlight.

Who shows up at their doorstep? What transpires now? This is no ordinary event as readers soon find out. There is someone with vested interest curious to see how this factors in on his own personal quest years in the future. There are many questions raised that will have readers engaged for the next issue to drop.

Austen welcomes back readers with a very solid return. Seeing the dynamic between Jess and Cheela made for some noteworthy moments. The ride on the space coach set the pace early for the story being told. Cheela’s rebellious nature brings the pair into some early drama with quick jabs of subtle humor mixed in. Once the pair arrives to meet with Shay, the mood in the book shifts. The conversation between Jess and Shay brings up themes that readers will see moving forward in this series’ return. The resolution to the conflict fit perfectly into the story’s direction. The final act may throw some readers off a first if they’re just jumping in, but the last moments will give a great premise for them to come back for more.

Olliffe captures the emotions of the lead characters in a very relatable manner. Jess being the protective “father” figure to Cheela when she’s insulted pops off the page. the intensity in which Jess’s mannerisms are displayed sells the calm anger he’s feeling at that moment. It’s only offset by Cheela’s outbursts to the actions made. Readers will have no doubt Cheela is more than capable of handling the insults with one swift action. The conversation between Shay and Jess will pop off the page as the reactions showcased adds more drama to the topic discussed and how it affects Jess moreso than Shay. The final act is more calm but never lets the drama escape it with an excellent final panel.

FINAL POINT: Edgeworld #6 brings back the much-hyped series with a stellar return. Killian Jess and Cheela bring the drama with well-timed humor to readers while slowly unraveling a bigger picture which impacts the future. Austen, Olliffe and the team present the wild, wild (space) western tale with excellent dialogue and fantastic art. This is a book that needs to be on your radar when you’re looking for comics this week.

For this entry, we’re following the throwback horror tale coming out of BOOM! Studios that is winning fans over more and more with each issue. SPECS #3 by David M. Booher, Chris Shehan, Roman Stevens and Jim Campbell pulls out all the stops in the mystery of a pair of magical sunglasses and how a small town is affect by a wish of two young men. After last issue’s finale, let’s not waste another moment diving into where the story goes from here, shall we?

SPECS #3 - on sale January 11th, 2023

If you’re just jumping in this book, the story centers around a pair of friends named Kenny and Ted. The awkward teens try finding their way thru high school and stumble upon some old comics. One of which had an ad for “magic specs”. The next day, the glasses wind up at the doorstep of Kenny mysteriously. The pair starts testing it out and find out the glasses work. It’s a gift and a curse as they use the powers. The pair starts using them to benefit themselves. However, things take an unexpected turn as they use the glasses to deal with a bully, who they cause to disappear. Now being blamed for his death, Ted has been arrested and Kenny is trying to find out the secret to these glasses and hopes to fix things.

This issue opens up where a mob is standing outside the police station where Ted is being held for the murder of Bernard Slyman aka Skunk. Skunk hasn’t been seen or heard of since he was wished away by the boys. Kenny leaves the crowd and rushes home to try finding out anything about the glasses that can fix this. Trying to call the number on the comic add leads to nowhere but there’s an address in Hobart, Ohio. While Ted sits in the police station, Kenny takes off fo Hobart. When he arrives there, the warehouse is empty. A wish for help is made, but readers won’t be expecting what “help” opens up for Kenny.

What does he find in the old warehouse? Is anyone prepared for the big reveal? And what about Ted’s future with hope fading fast? Readers will not be disappointed in what unfolds this issue.

Take about a huge reveal. Booher gives readers much information about the glasses and no one is ready for the origin behind them. It’s a big moment and one Kenny struggles to understand and accept. It’s also a great twist and plays into the throwback feel of this book exceptionally. Specs never fails to disappoint in this manner. Booher keeps taking these characters on such an emotional trip. Kenny’s frantic search for clues and what can he do to save his best friend pushes this story forward. All the drama build-up has a huge payoff and the final moment of this chapter will leave readers excited and nervous all the same.

Shehan pushes the desperation and fear factor of Kenny’s story right off the bat this issue. Seeing his best friend got to jail for a crime he didn’t really commit* (well kinda of) pushes Kenny into a defeated state grasping for any signs to fix things. The reveal about the glasses was a huge surprise and the art depicted the evil behind it. The imagery fit right into the dark story. seeing how Kenny reacted was another strong visual moment. The final page drives home to readers we are entering the final stage and it’s anyone’s guess how this book concludes when it does.

FINAL POINT: The drama inside Specs #3 takes a sudden and shocking twist to drive this story to a frightening peak. Booher, Shehan and the team press forward with the retro horror feel with excellent storytelling and haunting imagery. Specs has been such a epic ride thus far so you don’t want to miss this book when it drops at the LCS for new comic book day this week.

Something is Killing the Children #28 by James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design for BOOM! STUDIOS sees the walls closing in on Erica while trying to save a small town. Let’s not delay any longer and dove into this issue, shall we?

Something is Killing the Children #28 - on Sale January 11th

Tribulation, New Mexico has a monster problem, literally. An evil creature is on the loose. Erica has re-emerged from hiding to protect the lone survivor of its’ initial attack and stop the creature from killing more. Erica has become a reluctant ally to Riqui, a bartender who is the “guardian” of Gabi, a teenager who watched her family be slaughtered.

All the while, the Order of St. George looks to tie up the loose end known as Erica Slaughter by having Cutter take her out. In a short time, Cutter has been systematically striking Erica with personal blows and precise planning. At the end of last issue, she helps the creature turn into a “duplicate” of Erica, framing her for more killings. Now on the move, Erica is a wounded target trying to figure out what’s next.

This issue kicks off with Erica, Riqui and Gabi driving to the police station. Gabi has a conversation with Erica about her “companion” which reveals how Erica making a stand might get everyone killed. As they arrive at the station, Erica is arrested on sight for “murders across the country” due to the manipulations of a “federal agent” on the Sheriff. Erica tries warning of the set-up but the sheriff won’t listen and takes all three into the station.

With Gabi and Riqui kept inside a locked office at the station and Erica handcuffed to the interrogation table, the agent appears. Cutter has now arrived at the front door ready to confront Erica.

What unfolds next is a frightening scenario of events. Readers will not be ready for Cutter’s next moves. Has Cutter committed checkmate on Erica? is there any hope to survive what’s coming next? The final moments of this book will shake readers up and you won’t be able to wait for the next issue to see how everything plays out.

Absolutely fantastic issue. The issue is constructed perfectly in its pacing. Tynion takes his time setting up events for the dramatic closing moments. The build works as Erica knows what’s about to unfold and can do nothing about it. This sense of despair will hit with readers and only adds more impact when Cutter arrives. In only a few pages, the plan of attack Cutter demonstrates sinks in and will haunt readers for what’s next. It’s brutal, unforgiving and gives the sense that Erica won’t survive this time, which is what every great antagonist should be presenting.

The artwork by Dell’edera & Muerto brings Cutter’s twisted plans to life without holding anything back. From the moment Cutter arrives at the station, the feel of the book shifts with such tension. Seeing how psychotic Cutter is with her plans’ execution was an intense visual to play out. It’s only matched by the frustration of Erica who slips further into doubt of finding a way out of this. One of the final images solidifies that frustration carrying readers into the next issue.

FINAL POINT: One of the great strengths of SIKTC is when they play a slow build, the payoff never disappoints. This rings true again with this issue. Tynion, Dell’edera, Muerto & the team ramp up the drama with incredible storytelling and art to push Erica into a dire situation with very little signs of hope. Do not miss this issue at the LCS this week.

For this entry, the battle for San Francisco presses forward in the pages of one of 2022’s best new series. This series was heavily nominated for this year’s CHEERSIES Awards and looks to carry that momentum into 2023. THE DEAD LUCKY #5 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO AND BECCA CAREY (along with editor Michael Busuttil) for Image Comics sees the fallout of Bibi’s choice last issue and will anyone be ready for what’s next! The series has been excellent from the jump and it was announced that there will be a small break after issue #6. That said, the expectations for this latest chapter just spiked even further! Let’s not wait any longer to head back into the Massive-Verse to see what’s happening now, shall we?

San Francisco has never been the same since Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi returned home. An honorably discharged veteran, Bibi has now been caught into the middle of the conflict between Morrow, a corporation seizing control of the city with technology and the Salvation Gang, a group of questionable people fighting them back but can they be trusted? While this conflict is going on, Bibi has been dealing with her own mental health issues (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt) post service. Being in the middle of the Morrow/Salvation Gang conflict, Bibi has had a tough introduction in the world of super heroes with ever growing electrical based powers. Not every outing has gone well. When Morrow lured her out in the public, Bibi’s parents restaurant was destroyed and she nearly lost her father in the process. With Morrow continuing to back her into a corner, Bibi makes a choice to form an uneasy alliance with the Salvation gang! “An enemy of my enemy is my friend” has never been more true than here.

This issue opens up Mack Sands, a reporter covering the fallout of”The Darkest Day”, which was an out of control protest. The end result gives Morrow a big win by being awarded the keys to the city by the mayor! With a growing influence on the city and “promises” by CEO Jimmi Moss (who’s been pulling strings behind the scenes) of making San Fran better, the public still is at unrest as martial law has been declared! In response, the Salvation Gang is trying to sell their vision of San Francisco to the reporter, with very little success. With the building tension, Bibi makes plans to handle Morrow with her new “allies”.

The Salvation Gang “acquires” some Morrow Bots for Bibi to control. When Bibi is told of their vision of her running all three bots, there’s a familiar face of the massive-verse that pops up: Shift! Last seen in Radiant Black, Shift has been hired to help the Salvation Gang with Morrow. Readers see there is a personal connection with Shift’s motivations in this instance. With the new player entering the game, Bibi unveils her plan of derailing Morrow’s influence on the city.

The Salvation Gang wants more of an extreme showing but Bibi sticks to her plan of less casualties and more effectiveness. How will they make this work? After a few hours and some possible final goodbyes, Bibi and the Salvation Gang try making their move until Morrow strikes first. Readers will have much to enjoy seeing the battle of San Francisco unfold. The action is big, but the surprises are bigger. Can Bibi work with Shift and The Salvation Gang? Is everyone on the up and up about why they’re involved Readers will also have one amazing final image to close out the frantic speed of the battle to process while waiting for the next issue.

Flores keeps a solid balance of drama and action within this issue. The dynamic between Shift and Bibi is payed up perfectly. It’s a reluctant pairing but seeing how their different personalities mesh made for scene stealing panels. Hopefully readers get to see more of this down the road. Witnessing Bibi prepare for the final battle was another strong area. Her final goodbyes* gave readers an insight to how heavy the stakes were going into the battle. Once Morrow makes the first move, the pacing really speeds up but takes nothing away from what’s unfolding. With the odds stacked against them, Bibi doesn’t back down. There’s a few moments that will make readers very excited to see play out during the fighting. The final act is going to be a great surprise for readers with a parting panel to carry that excitement to the next issue.

Carlomagno & Iacono hits the ground running with the battle unfolding. The action is BIG and everything you would expect from a battle of this magnitude. There’s an almost full page panel in the midst of the battle that will have readers amped up for what’s ensuing next. No spoilers but when the page is seen, it’s placed perfectly to kick in the next phase of he battle. The costume upgrades and weaponry were excellent as well. The back and forth between Shift and Bibi stands out greatly due to Shift’s smarmy grinning after every snarky comment to get under Bibi’s skin. It’s countered with Bibi not giving in (with the exception of a few well-timed one-liners). The final goodbyes came off great too as readers can easily sense that THIS might be the last time Bibi sees her family, Eddie and Maria Garcia. Heading into the last issue of the arc, there was much to be enjoyed here.

FINAL POINT: The Dead Lucky has arguably their best issue with #5, and that’s saying something with how incredible this book as been! With a familiar Massive-verse friend stopping by, Bibi’s battle for San Francisco shifts into a few unexpected directions but never loses sight of the endgame. Flores, Carlomagno and the team bring the action, drama and excitement that simply can’t be missed within these pages. Do not leave your local comic shop without this book in your possession!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new series from Image Comics that has generated a huge buzz before hitting the LCS. BLACK CLOAK #1 by Kelly Thompson (Eisner Award winner 2021 - Black Widow), Meredith McClaren (Hinges) and Beccy Carey takes readers on a creative whodunit epic blending in many themes along the way. . Considering the creative team behind this book, the hype is well warranted. Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening in this over-sized (50+ pages) debut issue, shall we?

BLACK CLOAK #1 - On sale January 11th, 2023

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This story kicks off in the city of Kiros. Kiros is described as “the last city in the known world.” Readers discover that many years ago, there was peace made after a devastating war. Now in a state of tranquility, it would appear that things in Kiros should be great. However, it does not seem to be the case. Readers get ushered into a big example of how there’s still danger lurking within the city limits with many different characters living together in this fantastic new world.

A sea-like figure known as a “Maid” (note the fishtales) emerges from the Lagoon, an area within Kiros. The maid appears to die on shore in front of a group of fellow maids. Right behind them, a Elf-human named Dace also emerges lifeless and crashes near the deceased maid, with the group dispersing.

The story now shifts to Merchant Row where readers get introduced to Detective Phaedra Essex, known for wearing a Black Cloak to be identified as law enforcement.Essex handles a routine issue with one of the inhabitants of Kiros, a goat/human-esque figure before getting called away to what will be a shocking crime scene that she won’t be ready for.

That scene is located above the Salty Crow in an apartment in the Narrows. A fellow Black Cloak named Pax is investigating a dead body with royal ink on their arm. The body turns out to be Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the throne!

From here, Essex reveals a bombshell to Pax involving the deceased! The pair now starts to investigate Freyal’s death. First stop is to the Salty Crow, where more clues are revealed about Freyal. Once back at the station, the pair are called to the lagoon and now investigate the bodies found earlier in the issue.

How/Are they connected to Freyal? With more clues and a rising body count, readers won’t be ready for the next steps in the investigation. The tension keeps building and hits a certain peak when Essex gets clearence to meet with the royalty of Kiros with Freyal’s passing. Those scenes are impactful but get ready for the fallout. No one is going to be ready for that and the final image to close this chapter out.

Talk about a debut issue! With all the complexity of introducing readers to a fantasy world, at its’ core, Black Cloak is an engaging thriller. Thompson establishes that right from the start and never lets that sway what is unfolding here. There are many characters and figures making first impressions but none shine brighter that Detective Phaedra Essex. The character of Essex is a multi-layered figure as her connection to the murder victim drives the story into new directions. In a way, Essex becomes an enigma herself. There is no bigger (or better) example of this than when she meets with the Queen to inform her of Freyal’s death. As that business trip expands, questions become raised about Essex that plant the foundation for bigger answers later in the series. The partnership between Essex and Pax is another strong element in this book. It is very easy to pick up that the pair have been working together for a while and are committed to solving this high profile case with Pax making sure Essex can handle working it with all the emotional baggage involved. For being an over-sized issue, the story moves pretty steady without ever feeling like the leads are dwelling too long on any scene. The writing will lock you in from page one and doesn’t let go till the exclamation point put at the end of the issue!

With as fantastic as the story and writing is, McClaren and Carey match the drama and excitement of this story perfectly. With the fantasy element of Kiros, the characters all have distinctive looks. From the maids in the lagoon to proprietors of the Salty Crow to the Police Station characters and more, Kiros lives up to the “last city in the known world” with all the different residents. The city has many elements to it and for a first issue, it showcased enough to hook people in to find out more. Seeing Essex’s reactions to what unfolds in this issue is also noteworthy. McClaren never keeps the reader guessing on how Phaedra is reacting to a moment. The world of Kiros also is featured to readers as a place where more is going on that anyone realizes. There are many panels that will stand out but none might be greater than the final one page panel to end this issue on. Get ready for that!

FINAL POINT: Black Cloak #1 welcomes readers to a flawless blend of imagination and mystery. Thompson, McClaren and Carey present the world of Kiros with exceptional storytelling and vibrant art. This book will mesmerize readers from the opening page until that huge final page. You won’t want to miss this one at the local comic shops for new comic book day. Highest Possible Recommendation.

For this entry, things are picking up steam for the second arc of one of the hottest series of 2022! Last issue took everyone’s favorite reaper into her new status quo with a fantastic “welcome back” issue. Grim #7 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano for Boom! Studios continues to take readers along on one hell of a wild adventure. Let’s not wait any longer and jump into where the multi CHEERSIES award winning series goes next, shall we?

Grim #7 - On Sale January 11th, 2023

In case you’re just checking in, Jessica Harrow is no ordinary reaper. Her aunt Adira has banished her (along with her friends Eddie and Marcel) to the land of the living after a routine assignment goes awry and the domino effect it causes. Factor in who her father is and Jessica’s life as she knew it becomes forever changed. Now in Las Vegas, Jessica and her friends try enjoying a music festival until a girl approaches Jessica with a weird marking on her forehead. Tha girl tries throwing herself into a fire….but somehow survives. Suddenly, more people at the festival start appearing with the mark. What happens now no one can have expected.

This issue opens up with a priest administering Last Rites to a dying patient. The patient has the red marking on his forehead like those at the concert. After he passes away, the patient somehow comes back to life! From this moment, more and more people dying in the ICU suddenly cannot die! Readers bare witness to a horrible wounded patient begging for death but the priest cannot explain what is going on. More patients become unraveled in madness and the priest escapes into the hospital chapel. Once inside there, he comes across a familiar face to readers: Jessica Harrow!

Jessica and the priest start a conversation about what is happening. Jessica feels she is somehow responsible for what’s happening. The priest is puzzled as to why but before the conversation becomes deeper in discussion of faith and believing, Eddie and Marcel show up with a terrifying update. How can things have gone from bad to worse now? Is Jessica really responsible for all of this? Readers will have much to process as Jessica’s story only becomes more tangle up from here.

The mystery behind the markings continues to be one to watch. Phillips shows how terrifying the situation is becoming thru the priest’s eyes. Seeing his faith being contested, the priest never wavers from still believing and throws an interesting question about faith back at Jessica. It’s a moving conversation while all the chaos is closing in on them. The closing act continues a great point that readers have seen throughout this series: the use of music lyrics. When placed in the story, it adds a bigger feel to the event connected to it. The final portion of Jessica’s story adds a nice cliffhanger for next issue with an epilogue that presents even more possibilities of what’s next.

How wild was the hospital scenes by Flaviano?! The patient with the intestines dangling out was a very in-your-face image to exhibit how the “red plague” was taking over. The priest’s struggle comprehending these events was impactful for where they were exhibited. The emotion poured out when he was talking with Jessica really will hit readers hard. Seeing the frantic scene after Eddie and Marcel arrive only added more backing to how crazy things have now become. The final act mixed with the music lyrics tied up the loose ends of the issue with a solid final panel to close this portion of the story out on.

FINAL POINT: Grim #7 dips more into the horror aspect of the series with an issue that builds off some terrifying imagery to elevate the incredible story being told. Phillips, Flaviano and the team press on with a book that deserves all the hype and praise it gets. You will most definitely want to check this book out on New Comic Book Day!

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, 2022 ushered in the next wave of books written by the man who brought you such hits as We Have Demons (w/art from Greg Capullo). Clear (w/ Francis Manupal), Night Of The Ghoul (w/ Francesco Francavilla), Barnstormers (w/ Tula Lotay), Canary (w/ Dan Panosian) and Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine (w/ Jamal Igle). We’ve waited since last October for the follow-up issue of this intense read coming out on the Comixology Originals line via Best Jackett Press (Printed copies TBA by Dark Horse Comics) and I can’t think of a better issue to kick off the 2023 BJP year off with.

BOOK OF EVIL #2 by Scott Snyder, Jock and Emma Price picks up where we last saw Homer and his friends dealing with the “new world” as they know it. The first issue was exceptional. Let’s not waste another second and dive into this latest chapter, but remember stay between the “yolk lines"! LET’S GO!

Book Of Evil #2 - on sale January 10th

In case you’re jumping in now or need a refresher: The majority of children in the 1960’s started to experience a radical change when they hit adolescence age (14-15 yrs old). They started demonstrating psychopathic behavior with no apparent origin for the swing. As this issue spread across the entire population, some didn’t get affected. For said group that didn’t (only 8%), they are classified as “animals” or less than Human. Their daily lives in present time are a struggle and one in particular has been an absolute nightmare. His name is Homer, a 12yr old whole lives with his friends Blake, Elliot and Milton. No parents and no hope. The closest person he has to family is his brother Poe, who has gone missing. There’s a rumor saying he’s changed like other humans. Homer isn’t willing to believe that. After coming across a possible clue to end this madness, Homer prepares for his next move.

This issue opens up with a flashback to a memory of Homer and Poe. After witnessing a beating, Poe tries getting Homer’s mind onto something else. the brothers have a game they play and Poe keeps pushing Homer to think where they were going next. Homer is thinking about solving the book of evil and ending all of this. The memory shifts to a thought of going to Coney Island and having a “good day”. The memory is ended with a parting statement by Poe pronouncing he will never leave his brother’s side.

The friends are now looking at the box left in Poe’s room and come across what they feel might be clues to solving this mess. Looking at the letters circled from the cartoon written by E. C. Happ (the author of the book), the kids determine that the location of Happ is actually nearby them. Getting to that location is way easier said than done. The group discusses a group known as “Shepards” led by a man named John Crook. Their reputation for “disliking” non-humans is well known. Crook and co. would be directly in the way of escaping for Happ’s location. With this knowledge, the young group makes plans to escape.

Can these kids pull off the impossible dream? Will they escape the nightmare they live in? Readers tag along for an adventure and test of will. Is it possible for the foursome to defy the odds or will luck run out? High risk, high reward is the motto here. Readers will be excited to tag along for their move but will NOT be ready for an emotion final moment that will leave all invested in the story shaken.

Snyder pushes the young group into uncharted water while delivering impactful emotional shots within these pages. Seeing Homer’s determination to find his brother, no matter what the cost, connects with readers so much you can’t help but think “can they really do this?” There’s a moment in the book where Homer is internalizing the choice to go escape and breaks down why he’s more afraid of life without his friends than one with him having an easier life changed. It’s a powerful statement and completely explains his drive to see their plan play out. With everything they have seen in this world at such a young age, their plan demonstrates how dire the times are and what they’re will to do to fix things, if they can.

The rest of this chapter carries more “action” per-say but never loses sight of hope in a hopeless place. Their odyssey has exciting and dire moments paced out well. Readers won’t be expecting some of the more shocking parts to happen but nothing will top the final pages of this chapter. Snyder ties everything back full circle and the parting words and image never let go of the tragedy playing out here.

As how this series is crafted, there are no traditional panels. it is all journal entries with images mixed in when needed. Jock and Price make the most of these moments. Seeing Homer’s vision of Poe and Coney Island in the beginning of the book shows how Homer is envisioning the better times with this story. Seeing Blake’s blank and cold stares connects with how dire and hopeless this plan actually is. The use of red (for discarded terms/feelings) was subtle but hit their marks when used.

It’s countered with the yellow imagery (used for “Animals”/Yolk references) of the “pre-planning” of the escape and how Homer is seemingly talking himself up to be brave enough to do this with just a simple picture of a pen just in case an “old friend” returns. However, nothing will hit harder than the final image of this book. No spoilers, but prepare for that. It’s a simple image but one that resonates volumes.

FINAL POINT: Is there still hope when the world feels so hopeless? Homer and his friends’ Odyssey answers that question with a thrilling but tragic tale within the pages of Book Of Evil #2. Snyder, Jock and Price paint their disturbing “new normal” world with an Excellent story and art to compliment the vision. Don't miss out on this issue on ComiXology this week!

Radiant Pink #2 by MEGHAN CAMARENA, MELISSA FLORES, EMMA KUBERT, REBECCA NALTY, & BECCA CAREY follows the youngest Radiant as she navigates thru an unknown environment trying to solve what happened last issue. Let's not delay any longer and check this latest chapter out, shall we?

Eva aka the streamer known as “Evaplayss” is also the teleporting Radiant Pink. The young hero has been keeping busy with her powered alter-ego to the worry of her best friend. After making a charity appearance to raise money for children’s cancer research, an explosion happens during he event. Eva starts teleporting people to safety but now finds herself transported away with Kelly, an EMT who isn’t all that she seems. Together, they need to find a way back home before it’s game over for everyone.

This issue kicks off Eva and Kelly trying to figure out where they are and what happened. After some banter back and forth (with Kelly staying on her side mission), Eva realizes something isn’t right with the portal they’re looking to jump into. Needless to say, a bad direction is better than no direction. The pair jumps thru and winds up in a “Mad Max”-esque world. Not staying too long, they jump again. This time, they through a pink water world to one that seems like normal, but is far from it. Kelly continues to pull her charade on Eva and gets her to reveal her face!

Readers see the pair grow closer and Eva shares her insecurities about getting them back home. Before she has time to fully react, a visitor makes their way towards them. Meanwhile Maddie is holding down the fort back home trying to cover for Eva. With another portal jump, the pair winds up making another jump. What do they find on this world? Is Eva ready for what she discovers on this planet? Will they find their way back? Readers will get some answers but more importantly, they’ll get a final parting moment that sets the course for the pair’s next adventure.

A fun read from start to finish. Eva and Kelly’s dynamic was entertaining as seeing how they are reacting thru the traveling landscapes they crash into. The worlds they visited worked in showcasing their growing friendship. Seeing Eva have a moment of self-doubt when fearing she couldn’t return home was a well-timed moment from the writing team to break up fun times and ground the story back. It’s a brief moment but ties into Eva’s escape into being a hero and what happens when things don’t always work out. The final moments of the book throw a great curve into the story being told in this issue. Now with the change in status quo, Eva’s solo tale just picked up the drama in a hurry from a light-heartened tale.

Kuburt’s art greatly captures the energetic story being told with Eva. Readers witness how Eva and Kelly play off each other with their reactions to the banter. Whenever comic characters visit alien worlds, those landscapes shouldn’t feel like Earth. The “Pink Water world” and the last planet made for great backdrops to what was unfolding. Speaking of that planet, there are some fun visuals with a ship they find along the way. no spoilers here for it but it plays into the energy of this issue. Strong set-up for the final moments with what transpires there. Readers will be locked in to see what unfolds now and how the emotions are processed.

FINAL POINT: The Massive-verse starts off 2023 with a fun trip to multiple worlds without losing its’ energetic lead and the challanges she’s facing as an emerging hero. Camarena, Flores, Kubert and the team take readers on a ride with slid writing and art to balance out the dramatics factoring into this lively issue. Check it out on new comic book day.

Welcome to the first entry of 2023 for the ODPH podcast’s comic book review blog: Parlay Points!

For this edition, we’re checking out a brand new series rolling out of BOOM! STUDIOS that sets the tone for a big year ahead. MOSELY #1 by Rob Guillory (Chew), Sam Lotfi (Harley Quinn), Jean-Francois Beaulieu and Andrew Thomas kicks off a brand new mini-series with a first issue fans will be talking about. Considering the creative team involved, there’s no doubt about the buzz surrounding this comic. Let’s take a closer look at this series and see what’s the hype is all about, shall we?

MOSELY #1 - On sale January 4th, 2022

The story begins with a man by the name of Marvin Mosely saying goodbye to his family. The reason being a secret “teaching” job that will last a year. Mosely’s motivations are good as his work will help lead to a better tomorrow. As he says goodbye to his wife and daughter, readers get a small glimpse of his mission at hand. Mosely is led to a controlled habitat residential setting. As he walks into his residence, he now meets his “pupil” an android named Six. They start a conversation based off Mosely’s experiences and how Six is processing this information to lead to a better humanity. Mosely makes himself and open book until so much is revealed, he struggles to recognize what has transpired from his assignment.

Readers are sped into the future where technology has evolved to a dominant point in human society. Mosely is now working as a school janitor. Mosely has become worn down by the futuristic times now in place. After working on cleaning a mess up, Mosely meets up with a familiar character, who’s life has taken a very different direction as well. What transpires sets the tone for the reminder of chapter one. How does Mosely react after this encounter? What did Mosely’s actions years ago lead to in this current time? Readers won’t wait long as there are some reveals as well as the closing moments will bring a sense of purpose for the next phase of Mosely’s life.

Guillory presents a great question about how much technology can impact human life with this series. Mosely went from buying into to the optimism promised from working with his pupil Six to being very jaded and bitter about the current world he lives in. Readers witness his anger over how things are now and see how that will push him moving forward. The conversations he has between human and machine throughout this book are poignant for the times they usher in. How did someone who cared so much for a “better tomorrow” become so angered by a complacent today? Filling in the gap from how things arrived at this point will make for a great story.

Lotfi welcomes readers into Mosely’s world with some very impressive visuals. There are some great two page spreads that will stand out. The one is with Mosely leaving the school with the futuristic skyline in the backdrop. It’s simple in set-up but once readers see the next two-page visual directly after, it shows how far the world has advanced with people in that skyline and how Mosely doesn’t appear to want to have anything to do with it. The final moments throw an interesting change in the status quo. It’s an unforseen move but one that closes things out with much mystery heading into next issue.

FINAL POINT: Guillory, Lotfi and the creative team introduce readers to the world of Marvin Mosely with a fascinating theme driving the narrative. Mosely #1 raises the promises and fears of technology through the eyes of an man who’s chosen path sets up for a can’t miss series. Don’t miss checking this book out on New Comic Book Day!

For this entry, we’re checking out one of the most anticipated sequels in recent memory involving two of the most iconic fandoms in all of pop culture! MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2 #1 by Ryan Parrott, Dan Mora, Raul Angulo and Ed Dukeshire for Boom Studios & IDW combines these franchises for another fantastic adventure. Their last trip together in 2019 delivered on the hype. How do things shape up this time around? Let’s not wait any longer and see what is going on when the worlds of MMPR and TMNT collide again, shall we?

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2 #1

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo make up the heroes in the half shell known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. On the other side of this story is Jason (Red Ranger), Billy (Blue Ranger), Zach (Black Ranger), Trini (Yellow Ranger), Tommy (Green Ranger) and Kimberly (Pink Ranger) who compose the legends known as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

The last time these 2 groups came across each other, they were united in stopping Rita Repulsa and Shredder. The first series is an absolute must read. This story (which is NOT connected to the current MMPR series arc) is set six month after its’ conclusion.

The story opens up in New York City with Casey Jones, the notorious TMNT ally, chasing down Karai, the protege of Shreddar. With her master being gone since the ending of MMPR/TMNT 1, there is some concern from Casey about his whereabouts and rightfully so. One of the most dangerous beings of any universe has gone off radar? That can’t be anything good. However, an unseen assailant attacks Casey before he gets an answer.

One week later in Angel Grove (hometown for MMPR), the teams (along with TMNT ally April O’Neal) are trying to be “normal” out in the public but a fault image inducer might put that good idea in danger. All the while, April brings up concern for Rita being in the shadows an waiting for bad news to happen.

Back at the Power Rangers Command Center, Billy is working with Donatello on the image inducer while Jason and Leonardo are training. Readers witness the two share thoughts about their teammates before the tale shifts gears back to New York. Raphael and Tommy are alerted to Casey Jones’s disappearance and now go searching for him. What or who does the pair meet up with along the way? What other forces are at play that draw out both teams? The action kicks into high gear and readers are in for a BIG surprise before a final pairing shot that caps off the event’s initial outing.

One of the best in the industry does it again! Parrott is back at the helm for the sequel and doesn’t miss a beat picking up where things left off. Readers will look forward to great interactions between members of both teams. The pairing of Tommy and Raphael works so well for this beginning issue. This is the one that will stand out amongst the others, which all have solid points that they hit. Parrott gives every major player enough time to get their moments in while setting up for a bigger event later in the issue. It is a game-changer and one that sets a high tempo for the rest of the series to follow. Readers will be excited to see where things are heading towards now after a huge reveal late in the book. Very chilling line to complement the reveal with before ending this portion of the story…..and this is JUST the first issue! If this is any indication of what to expect, fans better get ready for something epic within this series.

Before we get into the art review, how incredibly AMAZING is this image from Dan Mora?!?!?!?!

Mora absolutely crushes this issue! Right from the initial encounter with Karai and Casey, Mora brings a high paced feel to the action scenes. This is leveled out with the character moments between the turtles and the rangers. One of the best example of this is when Billy is talking with Donatello after the image inducer breaks down. Seeing Don’s reflection of being a Power Ranger from the first crossover and longing to connect with the morphin energy again jumps out and showcases how these characters mesh well. The Leo/Jason training segment was also very solid in showing how similar they are and what they feel about both groups. As great as these images are, Mora’s set-up of the first team-up within this issue will blow fans away. There is a two-page spread that will kick off a big battle that readers can’t help but be excited to see what happens next. Excellent final parting shot to close out the first issue.

FINAL POINT: With an event involving two of the biggest fandoms in pop culture, the expectation levels are astronomical. That said, Parrott, Mora and company kick things off with a debut issue you can’t pass up. The fantastic story is matched panel for panel with excellent writing to make this an event that needs to be in your pull list each time out. Don’t miss it!

For this entry, we’re checking out a one-shot from one of the best comic series currently being published. Something Is Killing the Children from Boom! Studios never falters on delivering quality each issue. It’s spin-off, House of Slaughter, has been a great companion book highlighting certain characters from the Order of St. George.

BOOK OF SLAUGHTER #1 by James Tynion IV, Werther Dell’Edera, Miquel Muerto, AndWorld Design (with Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, Chris Shehan, Antonio Fuso and Dylan Todd) is a separate tale highlighting a notable character in the Order while unveiling some secrets along the way. Let’s take a closer look at this very important issue in the SIKTC universe, shall we?

Before we get started, How absolutely AMAZING is this cover by Francis Manapul?!

This issue kicks off with a closer look at Maxine Slaughter. Maxine is in possession of a bloodied Black Mask along with her own White Mask. In the lore of The Order of St. George, the monster hunters are classified by their garb. Black Masks are solo hunters while White Mass roam in a pack. Maxine is confronted by Paris and Tybalt, a pair of White Mask twins who see Maxine is contemplating a major decision.

The story then flashes back to one of the darkest moments in SIKTC lore: The day Aaron Slaughter was killed. Maxine and fellow White masks are standing around his body. Maxine is told to get in a car by the alpha of her pack, Cecilia who presents her with a unique circumstance. With Aaron deceased and Erica Slaughter now separated from the House, there is a huge need for Black Masks.

Readers now see a shift in the tale as Maxine starts investigating Erica Slaughter. The revaltions falling out from this leads to Maxine diving into the lore of the Order of St. George. What does Maxine discover about the Order? Is she ready for what’s unfolding? Get ready for an exclamation point ending that will have the SIKTC fandom talking about after this conclusion.

The story unraveling in this issue proves to be a solid companion to the other series while standing on its’ own. Maxine’s tale kicks off with an interesting challenge that (to my knowledge) hasn’t been brought up before. Switching Masks isn’t as simple as grabbing a new veil. Seeing how impactful this can be add more weight to what readers expect from each group.

The writing fully breaks down everything involved with the order and is a great reference point to characters in these books. The breakdowns do not take anything away from Maxine’s quest for knowledge. The finale lives up to the build. It will make for some interesting stories following the end of this chapter.

The artwork stands on its own as well. At this book’s core, it’s all about Maxine’s choice more that the background of the order. Take nothing away from that presentation. It stood out and presents much clarity behind this mysterious place. What readers will take away more is the emotional toll Maxine is hit with during her decisions.

The impact of Aaron Slaughter affected more than anyone (including) the Order realized. The conversations between Cecilia and Maxine convey those feelings with the panel breakdown of the car ride right after seeing Aaron’s body. The final image leaves no doubt about how things are changing for the Order. Readers should be expecting big repercussions from this issue moving forward.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

Book of Slaughter #1 gives sensational insight to readers about the inner workings of the Order of St. George. However, it is one member’s looming proposition and answer that will be the lasting impression felt by fans, all due to a well-crafted story matched with stunning art. This is a must-have for any fan of SIKTC lore and anyone looking to check this world out.

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter in Valiant Entertainment’s MATURE READERS vision of one of their franchise characters: Bloodshot. BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED #4 by DENIZ CAMP, ERIC ZAWADZKI (filling in for Jon Davis-Hunt for this issue), JORDIE BELLAIRE and HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU gives readers much to process as this latest story pushes Raymond Garrison to the brink. The challenges presented thus far have been a burst of creative energy that has given new life to Bloodshot. After reading this series, there’s no turning back. THIS is the definite take on the character.

Note: This title is a Mature Readers one and some of the imagery shown in the issue and blog post is intense. That said, If you’re good to continue, let’s take a closer look at what’s happening here, shall we?

As with the majority of Valiant comics, there is a great “new readers” page to catch anyone up to speed of what is unfolding in a series. This current run has been focusing on Bloodshot cleaning up the government’s mess of loose “Spent Shells”. These “Shells” are walking weapons that the powers that be deemed too dangerous fr the public. Now running free throughout the US, Bloodshot is the only one capable of stopping them. The past three issues have consisted of “One and Done” missions which works within the boundaries set up with this new mission.

For this issue, readers see a disturbing scene of officers tied up with barbed wire. Bloodshot has arrived on the scene and is immediately shot through the chest! The shooter is a “Spent Shell” named Verlane. As he’s passing out from the wound, Bloodshot is transported into a flashback time with his “wife, daughter and dog”. What should be a happy night playing video games with the family turns into a devastating explosion with Hobbes standing in the center. The setting of the explosion will look very familiar to readers of issue #1 of this series. When Bloodshot awakes from the Hobbes moment, he’s in pursuit of Verlane who’s staked out and defending himself from what he perceives as a monster hunting him. Just as Bloodshot is about to approach Verlane, he realizes he’s walked into another trap.

Readers will be on the edge of their seats as they bare witness to Bloodshot fight two enemies at the same time…but in different times Regardless when, the action never stops as it heads into its final act. Once there, the ending may thrown some off but it is a satisfying one for where this mission was heading. No disappointment here. It’s done in a way that’s all Bloodshot.

Bloodshot can be a challenge to write. An unstoppable killing machine needs to be tested each time out and pushed to their limits. Camp has proven time in and time out that this can be successfully done. This issue is no exception. Shifting between both time periods can be difficult but how Camp sets these jumps to unfold works to great success. Verlane’s ending was a great swerve to what readers have witnessed thus far with this book. The ending may thrown some for a second read, but it works as a great change of pace to what we’ve seen thus far with this book.

Zawadzki takes the art reigns for this month and doesn’t switch anything away too far of from what has made this book such a hit. The big action scenes are sprinkled throughout, but where this issue really shines is the emotional toll being portrayed. Readers can feel the anguish of the Hobbes storyline fallout and how it all ties into Verlane’s portion. The final image leaves a great lasting visual until next time.

FINAL POINT: No one captures the voice of Bloodshot like Deniz Camp. Bloodshot Unleashed #4 brings forth excellent storytelling and art as Valiant’s anti-hero continues his fantastic run with no restrictions of how far the creative team wants to push the limits in his new status quo. Do not pass up picking up this book and series when at the local comic shop this week.

For this entry, we’re continuing to follow the adventures of a young duo in a post-apocalyptic world within the pages of Boom Studios’ latest hit! Once Upon A Time At the End Of The World #2 by Jason Aaron, Alexandre Tefenkgi, Lee Loughridge, and AndWorld Design heads forward in its’ wildly imaginative saga with an issue you can’t pass on. The first issue was a great introduction and left readers with a unique final panel. Let’s take a closer look and see where Mezzy and Maceo’s adventure lands them now, shall we?

Once Upon A Time At the End Of The World #2

The world as anyone knows it is no more. It is now a wasteland of metal and a young girl named Mezzy is trying to travel thru via boat. In her travels to survive, Mezzy stumbles up an abandoned tower after her boat springs a leak. In this tower, she comes across Maceo, an optimistic boy who’s somehow has been thriving despite losing his parents. With Mezzy leaving and being the first person he has seen in quite some time, Maceo follows Mezzy on her travels, against Mezzy’s wishes.

This issue kicks off with Maceo’s final “goodbye” to his parents as he records a message before leaving. As the pair makes their way across this new world, Maceo asks Mezzy where they are going. Mezzy replies how she told him not to follow. Readers gets a great example of how different these characters are as Mezzy and Maceo have very different visions of what it takes to live in this new world.

This comes in handy as the pair becomes caught up in a wind storm that forces the pair underground. Now isolated from the surface, the duo needs to find a way to survive underground. Readers get some excellent character moments as the reluctant duo try to make the best of their situation before initiating their next move. New challenges arise as they head into new territory. Readers should brace for another final image that is going to add to more mystery with this saga.

The story of Mezzy and Maceo proceeds to impress with each page. Aaron taps into the emotions of these characters and presents their struggles with hope and heart. With a piece of Mezzy’s background being told, readers can see where her motivations come into play involving Maceo. Mezzy is more fitted to make it in this landscape than Maceo by miles, but she needs him to remind her of what being “normal” is with the optimism he brings. As for Maceo, dealing with saying goodbye to the world he knew after all this time has been a challenge but readers can’t help but cheer him on to make it, wherever that destination may be.

Tefenkgi’s vision of this world never ceases to amaze. Seeing the surroundings the pair is trekking thru makes their story stand out so much more. The underground scenes & the ones later in season provides some powerful moments from the battle to survive. The facial reactions from Mezzy as she becomes more accepting of Maceo’s assistance forges a bond with the readers to see this pair defy the odds in their travels.

FINAL POINT: The tale of Mezzy and Maceo remains a must-read with an impressive mix of emotional writing and impressive imagery. Throughout the obstacles thrown at them, the pair showcase why it’s important to never lose sight of finding happiness in hopelessness surroundings. Make sure this book is in your collection before leaving the local comic shop this week!

For this entry, we’re taking another trip to the land of the supernatural in the pages of one of Boom Studios latest hit series! DAMN THEM ALL #3 by Simon Spurrier, Charlie Adlard, Sofie Dodgson, Shayne Hannah Cui, and Jim Campbell has introduced comic fans to Ellie Hawthorne and the mysterious task thrown upon her and how she’s surviving fulfilling a legacy with insurmountable odds. Two issues in and this book has taken readers on quite the journey.

Editor warning: this book has some panels that might be too mature for younger readers. That said, let’s jump into the latest chapter and see where Ellie and company take readers now, shall we?

DAMN THEM ALL #3 - On Sale December 28th, 2022

The story thus far has been based around the death of Ellie's uncle Alfie. After his passing, Ellie has now stepped into the role of being the one to stop the 72 devils of the Ars Goetia from running crazy on society. Her mission is simple (per say): send them all back to Hell by any means. Ellie isn’t alone on this quest as she’s joined by Dora, an officer with a complicated past with Alfie. Last issue took readers on a ride with having Ellie confront Pruflas, a dark prince with some insight. The lasting effects of that conversation still weighs heavy on Ellie as a new threat has emerged.

This issue opens up with Ellie high on Hoama, a drug with potent power. Ellie is dealing with what went down with Pruflas. The informative figure tells of a stranger coming into contact with a magical coin. Stemming from the coin is a creature that looks to be a problem for Ellie down the road: another devil to contend with. Pruflas eludes to Hell becoming unsettled with disturbances causing things to be changed. Readers also find out some clues to Ellie’s past and how her uncle played a big factor in her youth. The imagery doesn’t hold anything back from demonstrating this. Dora, and Carlin, Ellie’s team on this journey are in the room as Pruflas divulges into a possible reason for Alfie being murdered. It is a big moment that will stick with Ellie after she comes down (and cleans up) from her Hoama experience.

From here, readers watch as individuals use their devils in violent ways. With the pressure mounting, Ellie and her team make their way to the location of a man by the name of Theo Bolster, a member of the 500 club. Readers will instantly recognize this character. When he invites Ellie, Carlin and Dora inside, the trio isn’t going to be ready for the revaltions he has to tell them. Pieces of the puzzle start forming but new ones arise as well. What information does Theo pass along? How does Ellie react to this? Plus, what about that final page? There will be much discussion about what transpires here with this latest chapter.

Spurrier keeps readers guessing with Ellie’s latest escapade. The meeting with Pruflas proves to be impactful for where Ellie’s mission is heading. Readers also see a flashback connecting how much her uncle has impacted her life. This plays off well with the major player to confront Ellie in the final act. Theo’s time in the story made for noteworthy scenes. The reveals of what his game is hits with readers and adds a great touch of drama for what’s to come.

Adlard doesn’t shy away from the tough imagery in this issue. From Ellie’s vomiting from Hoama to the brief flashback with her as a young child, the panels convey the serious matters at hand. The tone of the book is dark and unapologetic. Seeing the devils in action proved to define what kind of dangers Ellie will be facing as the series progresses. The final image will have fans very excited to see where the next chapter takes them.

FINAL POINT: Ellie Hawthorne’s world takes another fascinating turn in the pages of Damn Them All #3. Spurrier, Adlard and the team drop some clues to the mystery behind her uncle’s death and presents new threats on the horizon. The book has fantastic art and writing that will be a sure hit for anyone looking for a great supernatural read. Check it out on NCBD!

For this entry, we’re at the pen-ultimate issue of a series that has created some big hype heading into 2023. BRZRKR #11 by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney and Bill Crabtree for Boom Studios has been a violent voyage alongside B, the half man, half god, all destructive force. B’s quest to end his existence has taken many twists and turns since the book was announced on Kickstarter a few years ago, With more projects spawning out from this series over the next few years, there are quite a few eyes watching this book. Let’s take a deeper dive and see what is going on before next issue’s finale, shall we?

BRZRKR #11 - On Sale December 21st, 2022

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story centers around B and his quest to end his immortal existence after decades of fighting. B sides with the government. Over the course of the series, B (aka Unute) has been handling dangerous missions under the eye of Dr. Caudwell and his only ally Diana who are trying to solve his mystery. After taking a trip through his own existence, Diana has now become connected to B via an energy blast. There’s little time to process this as B has been set up by Caudwell for his own nefarious ways. Caudwell is trying to take B’s powers for his own gains. B has now been led to a location where secrets of how to end his life may be held. After uncovering a bird that can take away his power, B faces his fate.

This issue opens up with Caudwell’s forces watching in awe of what is unfolding with B. Unexpectedly, they have some party crashes who make their way to the site. All the while, B is being tore apart by the bird, which is growing in size due to the energy it’s absorbing. Diana is talking with B telepathically trying to make some sense of all this but B is insistent on seeing this thru. Caudwell watches and locks himself in a chamber to avoid the situation and make his next move.

What unfolds next will be absolute chaos. Cult members square off with the military unit with B and Diana in the crossfire dealing with the bird draining the power. Readers bare witness to Caudwell making a play that changes everything. What does he do and how does B and Diana react? Is B still a faction after dealing with the leaching bird? There are many thoughts readers will be trying to process as the last panel sets up for what is sure to be a memorable ending.

Reeves and Kindt set up the finale with a fast moving plot. Seeing the buildup for B’s possible demise was presented well. The emphasis driving the panels was very clear. The moment felt huge and it reflected in the artwork. Seeing Caudwell’s plan unfold paid off as well. His defiance in the face of the attacks unfolding will stand out to readers. Pacing sped up at this stage as the first half of the issue was driven by the attention to B’s struggles. The repercussions from his plan looks to have all the makings for a noteworthy conclusion.

Garney creates brilliant imagery to exemplify B’s ordeal. There were a few full page panels showing the power running thru B as the bird was drawing the energy away. Diana and B crashing back to the ground from this also stood out. These moments felt huge as it carried the weight of the major plot point. Caudwell’s repercussions will also jump out to readers. Those panels feel manic and connect readers to the unstable environment now created. The final image will have readers amped up for what’s about to unfold in the final chapter.

FINAL POINT: The stage is set to close out B’s violent journey with an issue that conveys the enormous burden B has and what unfolds when tampered with. Reeves, Kindt, Garney and the team welcome readers to the end with strong storytelling and impactful artwork. Don’t miss this book at the local comic shop this week.

For this entry, we're taking a trip back to one of comics' most creative universes: The Massiveverse and one of the best new series of 2022. ROGUE SUN by Ryan Parrott, Abel, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey has been nothing short of incredible issue after incredible issue (including the clever CYOA style of #7). Issue 8 set up the origin of a brand new threat to the young hero. Let's check out the latest chapter (ROGUE SUN #9 with guest artist Marco Renna) and see how the story is evolving, shall we?

ROGUE SUN #9 - On Sale December 21st, 2022

Rogue Sun is the story of Dylan Siegal, the son of the supernatural defender Marcus Siegel aka Rogue Sun. Their relationship has never been easy. After his father's death, Dylan has inherited the mantle and is trying to become a hero no matter what obstacles are thrown his way. From Cataclysm to Suave to Ornate among more, Dylan’s life has been tested in ways that he never thought would happen. Factor in trying to balance a normal life in high school and a step-family whose feelings toward him can only be described as “complicated” and it spells for quite the captivating tale.

Last issue, readers witnessed the beginnings of a new enemy for Dylan: Hellbent. After Dylan intervenes on Suave’s latest plans, he unknowingly seriously injures one of the henchmen. At the hospital, The henchman’s son Hunter, finds his dad in very grim condition. While outside the hospital, Hunter comes across a creature and a weapon which can extract the revenge on Rogue Sun for hurting his dad.

This issue kicks off with Dylan looking for the lost Sun Stone (which gives him his powers as Rogue Sun). It’s discovered by Brock, who seems to have some ulterior motives with his sister Aurel concerning the stone. The story then shifts to Dylan in high school and preparing for the upcoming Homecoming Dance. His “friend” Bryon has secured a date via Dylan’s teachings but the same cannot be said for Dylan. After a creative way to ask, Dylan finds out his former girlfriend Vanessa has moved on with someone else. Left heartbroken, Dylan is looking for a distraction.

Readers see this distraction up close and personal as Hellbent makes a play on robbing the bank. Rogue Sun arrives looking for a fight. Readers get quite the first impression of Hellbent and what he’s capable of. How does this encounter go? How powerful is Hellbent? The answers come pretty fast for readers with a final act that is going to bring forth some questions heading to next issue.

Parrott balances out this issue with the high school moments and big action in the latter half. Fun segment with how Dylan asked Vanessa out for homecoming. With all the supernatural elements surrounding Rogue Sun, the high school stories play as a great counter to the more serious panels in the series. “High School” Dylan isn’t winning most over compared to his alter ego. Dylan has shown off more bully behavior than hero at school, but outside is a different story. Hellbent’s true introduction was pulled off superbly. Great fight sequence and post conversation to connect him with the audience. Hellbent’s not just a “bad guy” as the motivations jump out and really build this character upward. The sub-plot with Brock and Aurie will be one to watch in future issues. Great issue.

This book couldn’t have picked a better fill-in artist for Abel than Renna. The synergy with Parrott (who worked with him for Mighty Morphin by Boom Studios) never was lost. Seeing Dylan lay the elaborate way to ask Vanessa out to its fallout made for solid character work. Renna illustrates some great noteworthy panels such as Aurie and Brock’s Sun Stone tale. The fight with Hellbent jumps out at readers for its’ continuous action pace. Post fight made for some complementary reassurance to what levels Hellbent are willing to go on. The final image to close out the book on will definitely cause some buzz

FINAL POINT: Rogue Sun #9 makes a grand entrance for the latest rogue in the Massive-Verse while breaking away from the heroics to showcase the balance with “normal” direction. Parrott and Renna re-unite and drive home the issue was phenomenal writing and art. This series is never short of surprises and should be a staple of your LCS pull list each month.

This has been a big year for the SIKTC universe with a successful spin-off (House Of Slaughter) making a lot of noise but the flagship book remains one of the best reads at the comic shops each time. Something is Killing the Children #27 by James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design continues to push Erica into the line of danger with threats attacking her on multiple levels. Coming off the heels of the monumental issue #25, the new arc is raping up speed quickly. Before we jump into this review, can we all take a moment to acknowledge the Dan Mora cover!

That said, let’s dive into this issue, shall we?

There’s a monster in Tribulation, New Mexico that Erica has re-emerged to take care of. Her presence has made the radar of the House of St. George who has unleashed Cutter to take care of Erica once and for all. Cutter has only just been attacking Erica but has struck the deepest cut with her murder of Erica’s ally Big Gary (see issue #25). Now recovering from her initial encounter with the monster, Erica is surviving with the help of Riqui, who is the reluctant “guardian” of Gabi, the sole witness to the monster’s initial killings.

This issue opens up to a flashback with Riqui talking with her girlfriend Fernanda. Fernanda is dying of cancer. She makes Riqui promise to look after Gabi after she’s gone. It’s an emotional sequence that will hit readers pretty hard. From here, the story shifts to Riqui making plans to take Gabi and Erica to the police station for protection. Erica overhears this and throws in a counter offer to handle the monster. This doesn’t sit exactly well with Riqui, but a resolution happens as they both are unaware what lies ahead. Erica is not ready to fight anything in her current state but isn’t going to let the monster win. Erica knows Cutter is lurking but not sure what her play will be.

Readers don’t wait long to see what Cutter’s up to. She makes a big move in her attempt to draw out Erica in Tribulation. After painting the narrative of how “evil” Erica is to the sheriff, Cutter unveils what’s next. Holy smokes, readers aren’t ready for what they see next. The final image…..GET READY! It will have fans on the edge of their seats waiting for the next chapter!

Tynion delivers a powerful opening with Riqui and her girlfriend. With everything we’ve seen thus far involving Riqui and Gabi, this moment puts so many extra emotions into their story. Seeing how Riqui is hurting watching her lover dying and flash forwarding to showcase her drive to keep Gabi safe blends perfectly. It’s counter balanced by the disturbing actions of Cutter. As readers have seen since her debut, Cutter is vicious and ruthless with her actions. This issue plants that idea up close to readers as her panel time displays how deranged she is and how much danger Erica is truly in. Pacing was never a problem here as the major plot points all connect for a fantastic read.

Dell’edera brings out the impact of Riqui and Fernanda’s talk with heartfelt emotion. The panels (with Muerto’s assist) will connect with the readers and does so much for the story if you’ve been reading since Riqui’s introduction. It’s extremely well done. From there, Erica and Riqui do have their moments in this issue, but nothing like the intensity and insanity that Cutter brings to this issue. No spoilers here but it’s a frightening set-up to display what’s she’s capable of. Readers have seen when she appears, nothing good comes from those panels. This issue has a 6 panel page that readers will see Cutter smiling about something happening. It’s almost a lost panel but it’s a subtle touch that conveys so much.

FINAL POINT: Something is Killing the Children #27 provides a roller-coaster of events to move the latest chapter of Erica Slaughter forward. Tynion, Dell’edera, and the creative team take readers on a journey with phenomenal writing and art that is second to none. SIKTC sets a high benchmark and always hits. Make sure you don’t miss this issue on new comic book day.

For this entry, the monster debut run from the new Power Rangers creative team over at BOOM STUDIOS has been nothing but an absolute must-read each New Comic Book Day! Long time MMPR fans and new readers have been gifted with big moments that have the fandom buzzing with anticipation for what’s next. MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS #103 by Melissa Flores, Simona Di Gianfelice, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire doesn’t show any signs of slowing down the momentum. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening now, shall we?

MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS #103 - On Sale December 21st, 2022

Coming off the heels of Ryan Parrott’s epic finale in the “Charge To 100”, the Power Rangers haven’t had too much quiet time at Angel Grove to rest. Investigating a disturbance on the moon, the rangers arrive to see Lord Zedd, their most dangerous enemy laying defeated at the feet of the returning Rita Repulsa now known is Mistress Vile! Along with Rita/Vile is a shadowy figure (who I guessed a while back was a “Dark Zordon” clone). The rangers do not fare well in this confrontation and lose Matt (The Green Ranger) to Vile in the process.

This issue picks up with a flashback/memory like scenario with Zordon talking with Lord Zedd. Zedd realizes that Zordon is trying to save his life and they converse about Mistress Vile’s return. Readers see fist hand how Vile and her team tear through Zedd’s forces to acquire the Zeo Crystal.

On Earth, the team is regrouping and coming to terms Matt is in danger and what they can do to get him back. Frustration is mounting as the emotional toll is starting to appear on a few rangers’ faces. Once again, Vile doesn’t give the rangers much time to form a plan as a creature shows up in their hometown. The rangers spring into action but what is the true meaning of this attack? How do certain rangers react? What is the fate of Matt? Readers have much to process before they get to the final act which is going to set up an interesting conversation heading into next issue.

This issue features how much Vile’s actions have started to fracture the team. Flores pushes the emotional weight on Zordon, Aisha, and primarily Kimberly is this issue. Seeing her conversation with Tommy pre and post monster attack is prime example of the foundation starting to crack. The scenes with Zordon and Zedd were excellent and told volumes without taking up much time. Their history is always a great piece of storytelling and now a broken Zedd relying on Zordon made for great panels. I’m still sticking to my claim Vile’s companion is a “Dark Zordon” clone, which would be a great addition into the rogues gallery. The final act ramps up the drama and readers will have much to look forward to with this story.

Di Gianfelice delivers on a solid balance of action and drama with the art. The full page panel of Vile’s attack on Zedd’s castle will jump out at readers. The following moments carry that same energy and demonstrates how lethal the new threat is. It’s counter balanced with the impassioned expressions of Aisha and Kimberly. The pressure of seeing someone they care about and being helpless pours out on the page when coming to terms on what Vile has done with Matt. It all makes for an excellent issue.

FINAL POINT: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #103 keeps its win streak rolling with another can’t miss issue. Flores, Di Gianfelice and the team play heavy into the emotions of the rangers while Vile’s plan starts coming into focus. There’s no shortage of great writing and artwork here so make sure this book is in your possession when you leave the LCS this week.
