THE PENGUIN #12 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the King of Gotham’s Underworld closes out his return. Oswald Cobblepot returned to his old stomping grounds. The U.S. government had plans for Cobblepot. Little did they realize what sinister trouble that had just unleashed.

Reclaiming his crown has been a challenge for the Batman rogue. Cobblepot’s children have been unwilling to give up their power. That was never going to stop him. The streets of Gotham have become filled with blood and bodies. It appears the Penguin is back but can he survive when plans go sideways?

Let’s take a closer look at how things conclude.

The Penguin #12 by Tom King, Rafael De Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo and Clayton Cowles (DC Comics) - Cover: Carmine Di Giandomenico

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

King’s long burn build pays off for an exciting conclusion for Mr. Cobblepot and company. With power at his fingertips, Cobblepot plays the odds which backfires. Putting the Dark Knight in a unique spot, the writing never sways from Penguin’s cold, ruthless demeanor.

Batman and Cobblepot’s conversations always stays grounded to the long history between both. Even as he questions his place in Gotham, Penguin doesn’t let go of the thought he’s one step ahead of everyone else. This plays out perfectly with the full circle moment with the government. The conclusion is a fitting and reflective vision of one of Gotham’s most notorious figures. King always delivers on bringing out the psychological aspects of his leads. This tale is no exception as it paints Cobblepot in a brand new light.

De Latorre and Maiolo send events out with stong visuals. Batman’s plight to save Penguin keeps a swift, frantic pace. This leads to a great split page of both falling for differing reasons.

In dealing with fallout from the power play, the art team closes in on Cobblepot’s ability to pivot for business. The scenes in dealing with Addison is prime example of this. Heading into the closing act, the parting conversation with Batman ends with a great full page splash of both looking over “their” city. Readers are left with a perfect closing page that leaves no question on where things stand now.

FINAL POINT: 9.7

The legendary Batman villain ends his journey to reclaim his throne with an explosive finale. King’s writing draws out the cold-blooded nature of fighting for power. De Latorre, Maiolo and Cowles’ visuals present an impactful end and new beginning that shouldn’t be missed. A new era of Gotham begins again.

EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the world of the X-Men continues to expand from the ashes of the Krakoan Era. Life as they knew it is changed forever. Now back in a world that fears and hates Mutants more than ever, some are not ready to get back into the heroic spotlight. One in particular is ready to blend back into normalcy. Unfortunately for Kate Pryde, that is easier said than done.

Exceptional X-Men #1 by Eve L. Ewing, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard and Joe Sabino follows along Kate’s new life post Krakoa and the one person trying to bring her back into the X-Life.

Let’s take a closer look at this brand new series!

Exceptional X-Men #1 by Eve L. Ewing, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ewing gives readers an exciting and challenging read with this debut issue. Kate Pryde is a vastly changed person from her time on Krokoa. The actions there have taken a big toll on her. With the writing, Pryde tries finding some semblance of peace in human interaction. This becomes very short lived as her encounter with a young mutant kickstarts the old emotions that she’s trying so hard to suppress.

The ordeal with Trista (Bronze) plays out to a fun adventure. It feels like a throwback at times. Seeing Pryde jump in to help connects with readers that the “Old Kitty” is alive and well. Its’ fallout leads to a start of a much needed friendship for both. Some readers might see it as the passing of a torch to a certain degree. Ewing’s epilogue sets the seeds for something greater to play out. The chapter leaves with another familiar face back in the mix.

Carnero and Woodard capture the struggle for Kate to leave Krokoa behind. The wear on her face during interactions tells the underlying story. This builds into a night out for Kate and a bit of 4th wall breaking.

This rolls into a great one page splash showcasing Bronze transforming with her powers. Readers tag along as the panels flow swiftly through a concert. The two page splash features the unlikely “battlefield” Kitty and Bronze walk into. Readers watch as the unlikely duo connect as both need someone to help find their way in the new stat quo. The multi panel conversation cements that foundation.

How that will play out is up in the air due to another character’s introduction. It’s fitting for Emma Frost as Kate’s attempt to leave the past behind becoming increasingly short lived. Readers depart with a solid closing image leaving the door open for the creative team to run with. There’s a lot to enjoy with this new series.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Kate Pyrde’s past haunts her present in a solid addition to the ever-growing X line. Ewing’s writing builds on her search for a new “normal” while jumping back into what she does best: help others and kick ass. The art from Carnero, Woodard and Sabino set the stage for the next generation of X-Men to take off. The title fits the story: It was Exceptional.

BATMAN #152 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, The Bat and the Cat are back at it again. Gotham’s most star-crossed couple is on the run. Amanda Waller’s forces are closing in. Batman thinks he might have found a break needed to turn the tide. It won’t come without a cost. Can he cash in or cash out?

BATMAN #152 by Chip Zdarsky, Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Clayton Cowles (Back-Up: Kelly Thompson, Mattia De Iulis and Cowles) follows along as the couple makes a play for a key piece to the Amanda Waller puzzle.

Let’s take a closer look and see how things play out.

BATMAN #152 by Chip Zdarsky, Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Clayton Cowles (Back-Up: Kelly Thompson, Mattia De Iulis and Cowles) - DC Comics

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Zdarsky gives readers a very straight forward story in this chapter. With the stakes high, Batman searches for a way to win. The writing puts things on a very clear path to that win. Readers get a solid delivery of superhero theatrics along the way. It plays its part well in the overall picture of “Absolute Power”, but nothing too shocking or out of the ordinary.

There is one overall theme that will jump out to longtime readers of this run. The Bat/Cat relationship seems back in its normal stat quo. Zdarsky pens a few key moments showcasing the pair at their strongest. This comes to life when a familiar villain makes a guest appearance. Its’ fallout leads to a well earned reset for the fabled pair as they head back into the battle with Waller.

Hawthorne and the art team deliver on steady action sequences throughout the issue. The standoff with Bizarro jumps out from most of the other action. With Cowles lettering, these panels jump more than others.

Readers will very excited with the big guest star debuting here. With a near full page panel, the moment seems monstrous. Batman’s reactions scream of shock once its’ revealed who has entered the story. It leads to a solid closing panels. None stand out more than the full page image that brings this latest chapter to a satisfying close.

The back-up throws the spotlight on Black Canary and the Birds of Prey. It serves as a good companion piece to a few other notable branches of the big crossover at hand.

FINAL POINT: 7.1

The “Absolute Power” tie-in ends on a steady, but predictable outcome. Through the writing and art, Batman and Catwoman face challenges from every angle. It leads to a satisfying end before both re-enter the major DCU conflict once again.

Hit me up on ODPHpod social media and let me know your thoughts on Batman #152. Thanks for reading.

ABSOLUTE POWER #3 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, Amanda Waller’s plans are on the verge of completion. Eliminating the heroes of the DCU is a bold task. This seems like an impossible challenge. That hasn’t stopped Waller and her Trinity Of Evil. A trail of broken and defeated heroes lie in the wake of her onslaught.

After last issue’s brave sacrifice, the remaining heroes plot a comeback. The only question is if it’s already too late?

ABSOLUTE POWER #3 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher follows along as Waller’s quest for complete control is within reach.

Let’s see where things stand not with the latest issue.

ABSOLUTE POWER #3 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid presents an ethical question in the midst of the chaos. The fate of Jon Kent is one that becomes quite polarizing amongst the remaining heroes. Both Nightwing and Barda present points to their respective arguments. In this time of uncertainty, uncomfortable choices have to be made. The ultimate answer provides a moment readers won’t be able to escape. Pacing allows for the creative build to amplify this outcome along the furious action.

The writing also weaves a few other instances where hope is still the heroes’ greatest strength. Waid mixes in challenges of self doubt and battling through it. These stories give the readers reassurance that they won’t go down with a final play. It leads into a very strong closing act. The chapter wraps up with another fantastic cliffhanger leading into its’ final stand.

Mora and Sanchez bring an even balance of action and emotion to this chapter. The stance of Barda vs. Nightwing carries much weight with their reactions. This becomes even heavier with a half page panel of Nightwing leading a charge to resolve this once and for all. Readers can easily sense this tension while Grayson kicks into high gear.

This is complemented with BIG action sequences. Bizarro’s onslaught leaves a brutal mark. Mora keeps up the electric feel throughout the fighting. This especially shines in the final act. With an emotional half page panel, there is finally a win under the heroes column. It is an image readers have been waiting to see for quite some time in this saga. Factor that in with the parting image and this series strikes a home run yet again!

FINAL POINT: 9.6

The heroes of the DCU rediscover hope through chaos with an incredible pen-ultimate issue. Wais’ writing brings out the best of an exhausted and broken group of heroes. Mora and Sanchez elevate the emotions and actions flawlessly. The only thing not to like about this series is that its’ ending soon.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #40 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the back stories of Erica Slaughter continue to come to life. Since her encounter with Cutter, Erica has laid low. The series has moved towards telling past tales of Erica’s history. Each have been stand alone and are great jumping on points for new readers. It has been part of her “Year Zero”.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #40 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) is the last stop of Year Zero before issue #0.

EDITOR NOTE: Some of the imagery and plot featured in this story is meant for mature readers. Discression is advised when checking this issue out.

If all set from here, let us see what secrets of Erica come to life now.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #40 byJames Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design (BOOM! STUDIOS) Cover - Jenny Frison

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tynion gives readers a deep cut into Erica’s past with this latest chapter. The emotional toll that she goes through as a hunter is heavy. Seeing how devastating one action can take magnifies that even more. With this chapter, a truly gruesome incident happens that wears heavy on her soul.

Readers watch as Erica opens herself up to Aaron Slaughter of what she’s experienced. The writing is blunt and paints a cold picture. Hunter life is anything but normal. Showcasing the range of emotions Erica bears will hit readers very hard. The fallout from this leads to a somber conversation between Erica and Aaron. How events wrap up feels devoid of feeling. It paints such a painful theme of Erica’s life and how she must process each victory and defeat. It is an intense insight that will have readers talking.

Dell’edera and Muerto depict Erica in a broken state. Her facial expressions tell a story of loss and remorse. This gets a counter balance when Aaron appears in frame. Being someone who’s lived this lifestyle longer, his reactions appear more “normal” than one might think it should be.

Everything does change when Erica begins to flashback on this particular case. The use of purples break up pages to exemplify what’s unfolding. This works very well to shift focus. That said, there is no greater image of this book than a certain full splash of Erica screaming. How the art and lettering work in this instance is incredible about portraying the horrible tragedy without showing anything to the readers. There is no doubt what has just occurred. It carries into the closing moments. With a simple panel and question, the images end with a feeling of remorse before departing.

FINAL POINT: 10

In this latest chapter of Year Zero, readers see a terrible tragedy through Erica’s eyes. Tynion’s writing floods the story with pain and anquish. The art team tastefully brings this tragedy to the forefront with the imagery. SIKTC continues to set a high bar with their intense storytelling.

ROGUE SUN #21 (BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE/IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the next phase of Dylan Siegel’s superhero journey takes another turn. Siegel has finally regained control of his body. His dad has resumed his role as mentor. Dylan seems more focused to take care of Mourningstar once and for all.

That might be easier said than done. Luckily, it appears Dylan might have some help in the form of Divinity. They unfortunately have to escape Vein’s wrath first before aiming for the Massiveverse’s Supernatural big bad.

ROGUE SUN #21 by RYAN PARROTT, NICK COTTON, ABEL, NATALIA MARQUES and BECCA CAREY delves into Dylan’s latest conflict.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening now.

ROGUE SUN #21 by RYAN PARROTT, NICK COTTON, ABEL, NATALIA MARQUES and BECCA CAREY (Black market narrative/Image Comics) Cover - Stefano Simeone

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Parrott and Cotton sets up Dylan for a test that he won’t soon forget with the writing. The confrontation with Vein plays out as one might expect. For all that he has accomplished, Dylan has miles to go before he can “box” with the heavyweight supernatural champ. Seeing Vein easily defeat the brash hero builds up a scenario involving the latest addition to the mix: Divinity.

Her part in the overall picture remains to be seen. In the meantime, she provides an immediate impact. The dialogue with her and Dylan meshes well. Its’ result is a humbling experience. The poignant illustration of her motives latches onto readers. “The world’s not ready for another dead Rogue Sun” drives that home. With this being the main force, The writers also builds on a new side plots before throwing in another curve in the closing act. One thing about this series is that is known for is sudden surprises, which is a huge win for readers. This issue is no exception.

Abel and Marques bring the eerie vibe of Vein out of the shadows right from the start. The full page fight splash kicks things into high gear. This leads readers into round 2 where Vein shows off his true nature with another full splash. Pacing with the panels never lets the electric feel of the combat elude readers. It’s eventually concluded with a huge splash showcasing the winner of the fight.

The other sub-plots get their fair share of page time. Aurie’s dilemma is filled with startling reactions with a fantasy touch. Dotty’s time with Divinity carries an emotional weight with it as events are in motion for their next moves. Overall, the art takes things up a few notches before catching readers off guard with a re-introduction and new challenge before departing.

FINAL POINT: 8.2

Dylan’s latest adversary comes with a valuable lesson in the latest supernatural throwdown. Parrott and Cotton balance big adventure and developing drama with their writing. Abel, Marques and Carey bring the action with excellent action imagery. Add in a solid cliffhanger ending and you’ve got another great issue to check out!

ABSOLUTE POWER: ORIGINS #2 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the origin of Amanda Waller continues! In present time, Waller is the driving force of the Trinity Of Evil. Her impact can be felt throughout the DCU. Seeing what made her into the dangerous figure she is today has been quite the journey. Turning tragedy into triumph, Waller’s rise to the top has been one to watch.

ABSOLUTE POWER: ORIGINS #2 by John Ridley, Alitha Martinez, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse and Steve Wands takes readers into the next phase with a familiar team along for the ride.

Let’s see how the latest chapter shapes up.

ABSOLUTE POWER: ORIGINS #2 by John Ridley, Alitha Martinez, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ridley walks readers through a historic moment in DC history. Waller’s vision for a super powered solution starts off with some stumbling blocks. Her conversation with Clarence shows off her iron will. The writing reflects how her past has forged her into the cold presences readers see today. This leads to an introduction of a very unique first Task Force X.

One member stands out above the others in the lineup. Waller’s dialogue with this individual is a highlight of this chapter. Once a problem arises with their mission, the writing shifts back to what makes Task Force X’s leader the boss. Readers witness the ruthless measures taken. It leads to a layered fallout that plays into her powerful status taking an even great leap forward.

Martinez gives Waller’s sales pitch quite the introduction. There are a few full page panels leading to a group page visual of the Justice League in action. Form here, the art displays Waller’s business persona as she converses with Clarence. Her reactions are calm and drives home the emotional connections she attempts. Once readers witness the first line-up of Task Force X, the mood shifts swiftly.

As Waller addresses the change in plan, events speed up on page. The sequence of action builds towards a shocking end. Waller’s facial expression in post indicates the remorseless demeanor readers know of her. The only time that appears to change is the sub plot with her daughter. Their time is very short but similar themes run parallel with the art. As the last panel drops, there is no question of where Waller goes from this point.

FINAL POINT: 8

The latest chapter of Amanda Waller’s origin presents a steady yet entertaining glimpse into the past. Ridley exposes readers to the true nature of Waller with the writing. Martinez and the art team focus heavily on the emotionless state of a force to be reckoned with. Knowing where things lead from here, it adds more context to an already complex character.

BRZRKR: LOST BOOK OF B #1 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the saga of a half man, half god, all killing machine has returned. Spawning into a live action & anime series, the adventures of B (aka Unute) continue to draw attention on a greater scale.

Heading back into the comic shops is a brand new story. It is even more special due to the fact that the original creative team have returned for this project. This is the first time since the conclusion of the original series in March of 2023.

BRZRKR: The Lost Book of B #1 by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney, Bill Crabtree and Clem Robins (BOOM! Studios) focuses on a lost chapter in B's legacy.

Let’s take a deeper look at how this chapter fares.

BRZRKR: The Lost Book of B #1 by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney, Bill Crabtree and Clem Robins (BOOM! Studios)

***POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kindt and Reeves blend the historic aspects of Genghis Khan into the unruly violence that follows B wherever he goes. Seeing the strategy used to recruit B plays well into the lore of the conquering dictator.

Readers watch as the offer of power is great for some but what is it ultimately to a half god? It's a question that applies some ethics in-between the many stages of brutality displayed.

There are some very creative devices planted firmly into this chapter. One that comes to mind involves a catapult. It ushers in a defining moment for B while mixing up the familiar formula of attack, destroy, repeat. Once events shift gears, pacing does move very rapidly.

In a sense, the shift fully showcases how even power isn't the most valuable asset to someone. The fallout from the closing act is as expected. It leaves things as mysterious as the lead character is. There is no doubt there are more chapters to be written on an already impactful legacy in the making.

Garney and Crabtree return with the intense imagery this series is known for. The story doesn't wait long to unleash B's fury. A near half panel announces an angry Unute into action. Panels becomes consumed with the violence on hand. It is not one for the weak of heart. The views effect the savagery of barbaric times. This feels like a familiar realm for B with his untamed association with violence.

The "calmer" times let readers in on Khan's over-confidence. The expressions being made show a man who thinks he's in full control. As events unfold further, the blind confidence becomes oblivious to what's on its way. Once the closing act kicks in, the art team goes bold to usher in the closing.

From a close-up on B's eyes to the pain he soon after inflicts, nothing escapes the reader as his pain is dished out on the masses. The closing pages set a more tame tone as this chapter closes. It's a fitting end with a bird flying with a message. Readers will have much to divulge and enjoy with this return to form.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The latest trip into Unute's trail of violence is flooded with familiar themes of redemption through pain. Kindt and Reeves construct a layered insight into the man behind the constant mayhem. Garney's fierce visuals expose Unute at his purest nature. It's a strong read that is a welcomed addition into the ever-growing legacy of a conflicted half man and half god.

VOID RIVALS #12 (SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT/IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the saga of Darak and Solila continues to drive the Energon Universe. They have been through a great deal in a short amount of time. Interject the looming factor of Transformers and there’s no shortage of thrills to be had. Last readers saw the unlikely duo, a choice was made. Where do things land now?

VOID RIVALS #12 by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Patricio Delpeche and Rus Wooten (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) answers the shocking statement made last issue and then some.

Let’s take a closer look at where things land now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kirkman throws a unique change of course into this series direction. Splitting up Darak and Solila after surviving their latest ordeal leads to a heavy emotional issue. The writing reflects the tense parting of ways of former rivals. Through their challenges, they have formed a bond whether each wanted it or not. Seeing the kind gesture Darak shows proves the evolution of their mission.

The story of Proximus and Ultum starts off with some uncertainty. Recovering from his defeat, Proximus is very reluctant to have someone join him. The writing shows the somewhat “human” connection being made with the half cyborg soldier. It’s a fine sub-plot for the parting of the Energon Universe’s odd couple. Readers won’t be expecting what transpires on the closing pages. The mystery of this book gets another addition. Where it leads will be anyone’s guess but concludes a turning point in the series perfectly.

De Felici and Delpeche bring the painful call to separate to light on the pages. From the worry on Darak’s face to the guarded hop of Solila, the art displays the feelings they go through making this call. This carries into some of the sub-plots, esp with Proximus and Ultum.

Even with helmets on, readers can connect what is unfolding. The body language being displayed speaks volumes. This comes in to more play in the latter half of the book. Readers watch as Solila’s eyes depict the wear of the decision. It is upstaged by the genuine care Darak displays with a gift. The result is a full page image that unlocks something even greater. Long time Transformer fans will know what that is but for now, the art team sets it up with excellent use of coloring. It is a parting image setting forth a new course that fans won’t dare miss.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

The call of destiny appears to be too great for the Energon Universe’s most unlikely pairing with this latest chapter. Kirkman establishes a new direction with solid writing. De Felici, Delpeche and Wooten spotlight the pressure of the choices made while teasing something BIG on the horizon. One chapter may have closed but it’s full speed ahead for an already captivating series.

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this review, the Children of the Atom have blazed back from Krakoa in a monster way. Scott Summers leads a new team in Alaska. The roster is a bit eclectic but that always makes for the best line-ups. Even with some new faces, the threats remain the same. Their current challenge is a familiar one that Scott and company know all too well.

X-MEN #3 (2024) by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J. P. Mayer, Livesay, Marte Gracia and Clayton Cowles sees Scott Summers vs. The United States Of America!

Let’s not waste any longer & dive into the latest chapter!

X-MEN #3 (2024) by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J. P. Mayer, Livesay, Marte Gracia and Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

MacKay brings out the best and worst of Scott Summers for this chapter. Cyclops has always been a polarizing figure. Over the years, he has transitioned from loyal soldier of Xavier to a young Magneto. The writing sets his character come out to face Agent Lundqvist. Their confrontation covers much ground. It backs quite the punch with some notable jabs before landing its’ knockout blow.

The rest of the team get their fleeting moments of time. Magneto and Temper’s conversation unveils a building conflict of opinions. While some mutants may have loved Krakoa, it’s easy to forget there are some that hated that time. Showcasing this notion builds up Temper when on page. However, this issue belongs to Mr. Summers. The bold declaration made comes with a heavy cost. MacKay exposes a rare glimpse of Summers in the closing panel. This could lead into some new avenues along with the more traditional heroics displayed thus far.

Stegman and the art team set a solid pace for Summers and Lundqvist’s meeting. The casual back and forth with the half panel builds up the tense situation. Readers watch as the two play their game of one-upmanship. Summers’ anger of events jump off the pages with big panels. Its’ only a few moments but nails its’ landing.

The rest of the team have some traditional superhero action here as well. A full page panel showing the team linked up and rolling swings their story into new territory. It’s capped out with Temper getting a full page splash bringing the house down. This is all before turning panels back over to Cyclops. With the parting shot, the weight of the world is felt crashing on Scott’s shoulders. It’s a fitting end and new start of the elder X-Man’s new stat quo.

FINAL POINT: 8.3

The world of Scott Summers comes front and center in this latest X chapter. MacKay drives the anger and purpose in Scott’s voice with solid writing. Stegman and the art team mix in loud action with the dramatic reactions of simple diner talk. Things are moving fast here so don’t miss out!

LIFE #1 (DSTLRY MEDIA)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, DSTLRY is releasing a brand new series that has a unique concept behind it. The upstart publisher is known for its’ creative stories. However, this series combines the writing talents of two of comics’ best for the first time on page. The result is a sci-fi odyssey told through two different perspectives.

LIFE #1 by Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets), Stephanie Phillips (GRIM), Danijel Zezelj (Nostalgia), Lee Loughridge and Jared K. Fletcher welcomes readers into a future where two lives are on a collision course their prison sentances can’t escape.

Let’s take a closer look at this much anticipated debut chapter.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Knowing the writing team behind this, this story was going to be anything but ordinary. The futuristic story is told through Bobby Prost (“PRO”) & the “Cassanova Killer” Cory James (“CON”). Prost is a “retired” thief talked into one last job. James is a serial killer whose been forced to live out his life sentences due to a secret experiment. Both have very different stories behind them.

Prost is written as a man trying to escape his past. His Angel/Devil on his shoulder is the persistent Jax. Their dialogue brings Prost’s doubts to the forefront. Events quickly speed into another direction entirely. Azzarello and Phillips waste little time in setting up the next heist. Pacing allows an excellent build, this carries into its’ closing act. The final page throws everything in flux leading into the flip. It’s high level storytelling that hits its mark with this portion.

The story of James is more disturbing due to his criminal nature. The dialogue involving his crimes is filled with anger and rage. Readers will have a clear view of the evil monster behind his charming smile. The path he walks from this point is dark and troubling. Its’ mirrored by the actions of the experiments. The outcome plays into a twisting scenario. Now moved onto a prison planet, James is broken and more unhinged. The writing leaves him in a very peculiar place for the closing pages. There’s no way to walk away from this story after that conclusion.

Zezelj and Loughridge add a certain mystique to the futuristic setting of this tale. Prost’s beginnings are gritty and carry the hardships he’s dealt with. This changes quickly once the two page splash image from space hits. Readers see how things have changed instantly. The contact with the the heist team gives off “Oceans 11” vibes in the images. No stand out more than the final page. It’s a bold picture that truly does a “mic drop” moment to end events with.

As for James’ story, the art locks in on his evil persona. The opening page from a murder sends chills through readers. Its emotions are added to the volatile state of the courtroom where James is being tried. James’ constant smirk fails to hide the evil lurking inside him. This builds right to the experiment phase of the story. The art becomes vastly different unveiling James’ fate. It becomes more explosive with James’ haunting eyes staring at readers as he calls his next moves.

FINAL POINT: 10

“Life” takes bold chances and constructs a gripping tale of challenging directions. Azzarello and Phillips’s writing is flawless as it tells two very different perspectives. Zezelj and Loughridge delve into imaginative landscapes and shocking characters. Rest assured, readers can’t afford to miss checking this series out.

LUCHAVERSE: CATALYST #2 by Marco Lopez, Ivan Plaza, Javier Caba, Alessandro Micelli, Bryan Arfel Magnaye, and Micah Myers (Masked Republic/Massive Publishing)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Lucha Bros. story kicks off events in this chapter. It gives readers a fair mix of action and supernatural elements. Penta and Fenix’s relationship is defined b their distinct personalities. Penta is more aggressive and cunning. Fenix leans into the more heroic aspect. Readers are given a solid backstory before the main event starts.

In this portion, Lopez and Plaza set up great action while dabbling in the mystic realm. This builds up the closing act where readers get more than they bargained for. Pacing goes move briskly through this section. Ultimately it leads to a few key moments before the conclusion. Once at the final stop, the writing indicates the layers haven’t been pulled back enough to decipher where these two are heading next.

Solar and Super Astro’s story stretches into many different areas. The writing dabbles into various time areas to off a more global feel to their tale. Adding in the time jumps helped to make this stand out more. Events are spaced out for a good duration to lock in with readers. The closing act throws a solid curve into the mix. With the last page surprise, this story is anything but over and done with.

The art mixes in a fair amount of wrestling into each story. Caba brings forth the conflicting personalities of Fenix and Penta to show off their differing opinions. There’s a great full page splash of the brothers standing off with Heaven and Hell that plays out more as things progress. This is also complemented once the brothers come in contact with its’ mystic ending.

Micelli mixes in reactions with the building chaos for some entertaining visuals. Seeing Solar and Astro in heroic fashion suits well for the latter conflict. The Roswell scenes are overflowing with disdain for their capture. Art moves into their new adventures with ease. Stepping into the closing moments, the main adversary is given a big full intro page spread, This can also be said for the final page. Both art teams handled the challenge presented for an easy win here.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The next wave of luchadores pick right up with a sense of the dramatic blended with action. Penta and Fenix’s quest brings out the tense nature with the writing. Solar and Astro carried a more traditional superhero feel built by the art. Factor both together and fans won’t want to kick out at 3 for this fast rising universe and line.

PHOENIX #2 by Stephanie Phillips, Alessandro Miracolo, David Curiel and Cory Petit (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Phillips continues to test the patience and will of Grey with the latest chapter. adding in Corsair into the mix works on many levels. There is a well placed humor moment in between the drama that hits the mark. The Scott/Jean "convos" are quickly becoming a highlight of each issue. Their latest plays off the awkward moment before speeding back into action. Once the mission picks back up, the pacing kicks everything into overdrive.

Corsair's involvement brings forth an unlikely threat behind the conflict. Phillips swings for the fences with this reveal. It sets up some great action moments. Grey is also shown to be out of her element in certain aspects. Her mis-step leads into the closing moments which are sure to have readers talking. Cosmic Marvel is back in a big way with this series!

The art sets up big action behind the family drama. The opening page clues readers in on Jean's rampant pace of fighting. Corsair is given a full page image to welcome him into the story. Their interactions range from funny to uneasy. The art reflects this with the detailed facial expressions.

The latter half of the book is filled with blockbuster action. Jean is presented as defiant in danger's face. The reactions of the aliens she's fighting to save are noteworthy as well. Readers see the fear Jean's action cause even when trying to help. With a strong closing image, the latest chapter sets the stage for an even bigger battle to come.

FINAL POINT: 9

Jean Grey's reign in space continues with another strong chapter. Phillips' writing crafts a balance of big action and tense emotions. BLACK CLOAK #7 by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey returns five years removed from the events of the fire of Kiros. Where do things stand now?

Let’s not wait any longer & jump back into this series!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With a time jump, things can go awry very quickly. There is no fear of that happening with the return chapter. Thompson recaptures the intrigue and mystique of Kiros right from the start. Phaedra’s new stat quo provides its’ fair share of strain with Pax. The former partners show the bond of comradery even with the events of the fire weighing heavily on both.

Phaedra’s caring nature pushes through in the end. It’s one of her strongest character traits. The writing teases its’ unveiling but ultimately lets it become the catalyst for the case at hand. Aldean offers some comedic relief in the “third wheel” role. This gives some welcomed breaks in the building case at hand. Events conclude with a great cliffhanger that is sure to please. Get ready for another incredible arc.

McClaren excels at building a vivid and imaginative new landscape of Kiros. The ruins carry a certain feel as Phaedra walks readers through her new home. Pax’s reunion with Essex covers a wide range of emotions. Readers can sense the lingering feeling from the fire. They can also pick up the longing to get back to where the partners used to be at.

Aldean is a visually catching addition to the team. Carey’s lettering in the conversation provides a pause in the drama while showing a new side of Essex. This returns to focus the trio on what lies ahead. The full page closing image delivers on leaving readers wanting more of the story. It also leaves no doubt that even with five years removed, the spectacle of Kiros burns bright with the art.

PARANOID GARDENS #2 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, we’re heading back into the quirky and mysterious world of Dark Horse Comics’ latest hit. The staff of Paradise Gardens have their hands full. Eclectic residents. Challenging cases. Double dealings behind the scenes.

What is in store for Loo as she navigates these ever changing waters?

PARANOID GARDENS #2 by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, Chris Weston, Dave Stewart and Nate Piekos looks to double down on its’ creative tale in its’ next chapter.

Let’s not wait any longer and dive right in!

PARANOID GARDENS #2 by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, Chris Weston, Dave Stewart and Nate Piekos (Dark Horse Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

For this second chapter, the attention is thrown on the scheming of Dr. Zerc. Way and Simon have slowly started peeling back his true intentions. This chapter shows a cold and ruthlessness side to his nature. It is a contrast of what he has demonstrated to his fellow team at the Gardens. Zerc’s manipulations of a staff member and its’ outcome sends a loud message in the shadows of what lies ahead.

Way and Simon spread out Loo’s discovery mission throughout this chapter. She comes across with noble intentions but walks a very fine line of being caught. The pacing allows her moments to build for a solid payoff. It gets assisted by some well-timed humor from patients. The writing provides a solid foundation for both main characters to grow and set forth their journeys for a showdown forthcoming.

Weston and Stewart dive heavy into the emotional reactions of the Gardens staff with the art. Loo’s responses to her ever-evolving saga are filled with wonderment and apprehension. Readers see a prime example of this when she’s teaching a class and reacts to a flashback/Dream sequence.

Zerc’s planning works wonders as he blackmails the Gardens driver for his bidding. The devilish smirk he wears sets the unsettling tone. This mood flows into the closing conflict and disturbing resolution. Zerc’s distain body language in the closing half page panel sells the depths he’s willing to go. Readers watch as the chapter concludes on a very definitive point with more deceit en route to the care center.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

The quirkiness of Paradise Gardens steps back to allow a more grounded and concentrated tale with its’ two main characters. Fantastic writing and detailed art spotlight the measures Zerc and Loo are willing to go for what they’re searching for. There is nothing predictable about this story and that’s a huge win for readers.

Let’s take a closer look at how their first escapade plays out.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #30 by Mark Waid, Gleb Melnikov, Tamra Bonvillain, and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

One of the series best elements is taking a dive into the history of the iconic pair. Adding Wonder Woman into the mix hits on many levels. Waid constructs an excellent mystery that unites all three parties. There is a genuine sense of hope and wonder filling the pages. The classic superhero elements are captured to give the audience a throwback that juggles three unique personalities.

Having Paradise Island as the backdrop, outsiders being welcomed is a small beginning conflict. Robin provides great comic relief as the heroes start their mission. Waid paces events to continuous build towards big moments. This leads to a strong closing act where the heroes show off what makes them an elite trio. Its’ fallout plays in a predictable yet satisfying close. Few can pull this off quite like Waid with his writing.

Melnikov steps in for Dan Mora and brings a vibrant style to the past era. A near full page panel brings the mystery and heroes together to kickstart events. The coloring of Bonvillain adds to the sense of awe that Robin displays in his panels.

The reactions of Batman and Wonder Woman investigating what happened is another bright moment. Diana’s reactions lock in with readers as elements come into focus. Once a few key reveals occur, the art kicks into a new gear. It caps off with Wonder Woman leading a charge to address things with her partners. The imagery seizes readers’ attention while ending the conflict. Readers should have much to rave about with this one.

FINAL POINT: 9

The beginnings of DC’s true Trinity shine bright in an incredible vintage tale. Waid’s writing features the budding teamwork and trust through fire. Melnikov, Bonvillain and Sharpe orchestrate a timeless story which re-enforces the impact when all three heroes working together. It’s Superhero storytelling at it’s (worlds) finest for a reason.

SUPERMAN #17 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, Clark Kent is on the run! The Man of Steel is being hunted by Amanda Waller. Luckily, he has some help to keep Waller at bay. SUPERMAN #17 by Joshua Williamson, Jamal Campbell and Ariana Maher takes he Man of Steel on a journey through darkness. What waits at the other side?

Let’s take a deeper dive and see what unfolds now!

SUPERMAN #17 by Joshua Williamson, Jamal Campbell and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With the walls closing in, Williamson continues to push Superman into uncharted territory. The toll of Waller’s actions are staring to seep in. With an emotional outburst, readers can identify the pain Kent is going through. It’s a sight that isn’t shown often. With this moment in story, the emotional release hits.

It drives Superman and Zatanna to a quicker pace for the remainder of the chapter. Willaimson sprinkles in times of challenge before the main event. The sense of anger and (to a certain degree) fear start taking over the pages. This theme is very prevalent during the close. It ultimately leaves readers with a jaw dropping ending that fits the broken persona of DC’s biggest hero.

Campbell wastes no time on presenting spectacular images. The opening flashback element bottles up a more light hearted time before ushering into the murky present. Zatanna and Supers are given a full splash page to start their escapades. It starts a bold display of frustration in Clark that won’t escape readers’ thoughts.

The closing act starts off with a well-detailed two page splash. Right before the action begins, the art team mix in some more calmer panels. This quickly fades away as Superman’s impatient behavior takes center stage. Imagery raises the stakes to an all time high. The art team presents a full page closing figure that readers will have thoughts on. It plays into leaving the audience wanting more. This issue shows no signs of misfiring in that aspect.

FINAL POINT: 8.9

The lengths and desperation start seeping in on DC’s flagship character with this chapter. Williamson pens a defeated yet driven Superman with the writing. Campbell continues providing fantastic images that easily hook readers in. Considering where the closing page lands, all bets are off as events play out.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #1 (MARVEL COMICS - 2024)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, a classic Marvel character howls his way back to the comic shops!

After the events of Marvel's "Bloodiest Event", the 52 year old supernatural staple is set to take things up a few notches. Anyone thinking this will be just "another werewolf" story is sadly mistaken. The adventures of Russell (and Elsa Bloodstone) will be featured under the Marvel Red Band format. Considering how violent "Blood Hunt" was, it is anyone's guess where things are heading now.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #1 by Jason Loo (The All-Nighter, the Sentry), Sergio Fernández Dávila (Venom, Thor), Jay Leisten, JP Mayer, Craig Yeung, Alex Sinclair and Joe Sabino have fans howling at the bloody adventures!

Let’s check out what the first chapter has to deliver!

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #1 by Jason Loo (The All-Nighter, the Sentry), Sergio Fernández Dávila (Venom, Thor), Jay Leisten, JP Mayer, Craig Yeung, Alex Sinclair and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With Loo at the helm, I already had high expectations for this series. Taking a character like Russell (with his history) and putting more mystery behind him was a great start. It gave enough insight for new readers to jump in quickly.

However, the hook that won me over was the introduction of the rogues: Death Watch (the 90's Ghost rider fans know what he's capable of) AND the Hood?! Seeing those two weave behind the scenes can only lead to trouble for any lead. It provides a solid back drop for the internal conflict post Blood Hunt.

Russell's struggles with the beast within is well known. Adding in a new dynamic to it plays for a fresh start. Long time fans won't be disappointed with the changes.

There's a fair share of wolf business that's par for the course. Seeing both plots interweave gives readers much to look forward too. The eventual payoff should be quite the memorable moment. Great start to the series.

Dávila and the team bring out the best of the beast throughout the chapter. There's an excellent two page splash showing off Russell's unique set of skills. This is complimented with another big splash connecting the story to "Blood Hunt". Russell's reaction is gifted a full page image that sets the course for the rest of the story.

When referenced about the "Red Band", the art clearly reflects the savage nature of Russell's world. Two victims of an attack are presented to readers without apologies. Speaking of no apologies, both major rogues make a dramatic entrance into the story with blown up images. Their bloody actions speak volumes to the readers. It caps off with a solid final image that sets the tone for an even greater saga to be told.

FINAL POINTS: 8.8

In dealing with such a well-known character with history, it can be a challenge to present something new. Loo sets up a fantastic starting point that covers much ground before concluding. The art team led by Davila flood the pages with brutal scenarios and an ever-growing sense of intrigue. With a great jumping on point, this one will be a tale you won't want to miss where it leads next.

FALLING IN LOVE ON THE PATH TO HELL #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, the most unlikely love story in comics continues! The journey of Asami and MacRaith has taken many twists and turns. Being in purgatory plays a big factor with this. It also doesn’t help when a helping hand shows their true colors. With the dirty dealing of Mohan causing more havoc, how much does the couple have left?

Falling in Love on the Path to Hell #3 by Gerry Duggan, Garry Brown, Chris O’Halloran, Joe Sabino presses forward with another creative outing!

Let’s see how thing play out for the cursed couple now.

Falling in Love on the Path to Hell #3 by Gerry Duggan, Garry Brown, Chris O’Halloran, Joe Sabino (Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With Mohan’s true intentions coming to light, readers had to expect things to go from bad to worse. MacRaith’s struggles to “adapt” to this new world increase with each page. The reluctance to buy into Mohan’s order peels back his layers of character. Even with a bonding moment with Asami, the sense of uneasiness lingers.

Once a choice is made, Duggan spotlight’s Mohan’s twisted ways of dealing with “failure to comply”. It is not one for the squeamish. The sequence reflects the savage personalities inhabiting Purgatory. With a community of killers, there is nothing nice about their business. What follows next is a violent answer to the laws of the land.

As the unlikely couple draws closer, the writing leads their union to be a trial through fire. Readers will be locked in with their dire fight to survive. It is very creative writing that continues to keep taking intense chances that has to be applauded.

Brown and O’Halloran paint a disturbing picture with the art in this chapter. Mohan’s funeral arraignments for a fallen warrior make a loud statement early in the issue. With a half page image, Mohan stands over his army dictating. Asami if gifted a few pages of silent images showcasing her skills. It is a calm moment before the disturbing action forthcoming.

Mohan’s enforcers run-in with MacRaith holds nothing back. The “motivation” scenes reflect the unhinged behavior running rampant. They are ended quickly with a two page splash matching it’s savagery. The art team doesn’t pull anything back with the imagery here. It drives home the point of the bleakness of purgatory and those living in it. With the closing page, the issue concludes on a quiet and somber panel. It allows the reader to process what went down and ponder what troubles lie ahead.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

With MacRaith in the crosshairs of danger, comics’ most unlikely love story delivers another solid chapter. Duggan’s writing constructs the unsettling lengths Mohan will go for control. Brown and O’Halloran mix in the big horrors and small victories with the artwork. Without question, there is nothing else like this series and its’ creativity on the shelves right now.

TRANSFORMERS #11 by DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON, JORGE CORONA, MIKE SPICER AND RUS WOOTEN (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

As the battle has been raging on, the scars left have been taking their tolls. Johnson pens a very heavy driven tale of pain and loss. The emotions pour out of Arcee and Euta. It reflects the hellish landscape this conflict has created. The dialogue with Optimus comes with venom and frustration. Readers can feel the rage brewing at the hands of Soundwave and company.

Pacing allows for a quick Segway with Beachcomber. His point of view of events is in strong contrast to most others involved. Johnson keeps his true placement in this tale in a unique position. It is enough of a break to let the audience brace for the closing act. Leave it to Johnson to take them on a rollercoaster of reactions before departing. The closing page will leave no doubt of how hope continue to slip from attainability.

Corona and Spicer delve into the wear of combat often in this chapter. The rage of Arcee comes to the forefront with sequenced panels. Its’ added to with a half page panel of Euta venting on Optimus. Both are easy connections to the readers with the stress of battle.

Once the final act kicks into gear, the art team builds up the tension with the imagery. Seeing a recsue attempt go sideways provides many thrills. It leads to a creative order of panels bringing in a major player into the fight. With Wooten’s lettering, the moment hits new heights. The time is quickly short lived as a spectacular two page splash steals the thunder of the battle. How things are left with the final panel presents a somber feeling of where things appear to head next. It’s a perfect way to tie off events until next time.

FINAL POINT: 9

As time runs out for Optimus Prime, readers are left with a chapter of highs and lows. Johnson brings the deep wounds of conflict into the spotlight with the writing. Corona, Spicer and Wooten flood the pages with impressive visuals as all appears to be lost for the Autobots and Earth. This series continues to be the talk at the LCS for good reason.
