After being a mistreated bartender at The Falcone-owned Iceberg Lounge, Cobblepot gets on the radar of Batman. With a loose agreement, Cobblepot begins working with the Dark Knight to take down Falcone. Once their deal is done, Cobblepot starts teasing the readers to what his true endgame is? Was it revenge on the crime family who mocked him or was this a long play after all?

This issue begins one year after Falcone was taken out. Penguin is running things in the casino. He asks one of Falcone’s former employees about finding the muscle behind Falcone’s moves. Penguin is given a business card. The gesture is returned with a knife through the neck courtesy of Penguin. Readers see the name on the card as “The Help”.

At this time, a young Jim Gordan answers a call from Penquin addressing the rampant crime in the city. This prompts a call to Batman. The weapon Penguin used to kill is recovered. The chase leads to a confrontation between Bats and Penguin. After some questioning, the suspect shifts away from Penguin onto another target.

Who is the next target on Penguin’s hit list? Readers see how the set-up plays out in the ever-changing movement of the unlikely pair’s journey. The sense of tension never escapes the page. This plays heavily into the closing moments. A shocking event begins which will have readers guessing until the next chapter drops. Just wait until you see that final page!

King excels at showing how layered Cobblepot early days were. Is he playing the long game of working Batman? Does he have plans all his own? The writing dives into the uneasiness of the new partnership. Doubt and suspension linger in the air. This leads readers into seeing a new side of Cobblepot. The shifting of gears continues to be a strong point of this series. With a shocking final page, there will be much to discuss.

Subic steps in for art duties on this story. The vision of Penguin comes off as cunning and misleading. The conversation with him and Batman demonstrates the swings in behavior. This leads into a solid full page image of Penguin stating in the center of Gotham.

The visuals of Penguin running the casino further illustrates what makes him dangerous. The unsettling nature shines through each panel. This all builds towards a show-stopping final full page that will have many fans excited for what’s next.

The secrets behind Cobblepot’s past give a great insight to the ascension in the criminal ranks with this strong issue. King’s writing demonstrates Cobblepot’s maneuvering and deceptions perfectly. Subic Maiolo, and Cowles stage the visuals for an easy win with readers. Just when yo think you have the answers, the final mage changes the questions. Prepare for quite the entertaining issue.

THE ALL-NIGHTER #15 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of a fantastic story via ComiXology Originals. Debuting in October of 2021, the saga of Ian, Cynthia, Joy and Andrea has led into some incredible places and fantastic characters. It is no surprise when the creative team behind it is an Eisner winning pair (AFTERLIFT) that is known for the imaginative storytelling.

Readers have followed along as the vampire crew behind an all-night diner have challenged villains, mythology, and the high cost of immortality. Heading into their final chapter, the family risks it all for one of their own. Who will survive the final showdown with the Takers?

Alex, the vampire/“super-hero” who began this journey in issue #1, has been taken away by the Takers. The remaining members of the family track down his whereabouts to the Bermuda Triangle. With Francis (Frankenstein) and GOD by their side, the group ventures to free their family member.

Upon arrival, they are confronted by The Boogeyman. Behind the scenes lurking is Lucifer. He is waiting to have a chat with God about current affairs. Once the family conquers their fears, its full speed ahead into a confrontation with the Boogeyman and his forces.

This issue begins with God and Lucifer discussing the forthcoming battle between them. God has cyphered Lucifer is building his forces via the Supernatural. God challenges him on the plans. God also questions whether they’re on the right path as well.

Meanwhile, the action kicks off with the family (in full superhero costumes) taking it to the Boogeyman. With a lack of fear, the evil forces begin to fade. During this moment, Cynthia and Joy break away to find Alex and Francis, who are still captured.

The captured pair have found a friend in the form of the Yeti. Unfortunately for the trio, their path to escape has come upon a road block. Lazaruk and his “Justice Angels” stand in their way.

Readers watch the magic unfold as the final stand plays out. The tension never slows down building to a fever pitch with time slipping away. An unlikely voice becomes the catalyst for the strongest part of the final act. The emotions run high with one paying an ultimate price. The epilogue provides a superb ending to what has been a phenomenal read since day one. There is much to enjoy with this final chapter.

Zdarsky combines multiple theme for this finale. Questioning fate is one of the bigger elements of the story. The conversation of God, Lucifer and their destiny raise many questions about the paths they’ve chosen. This ties in perfectly with the family’s original challenges. Defying the Takers, the writing has mirrored the defiance of what is considered to be certain fate. It leads to great character moments for Ian, Andrea and Cynthia.

It’s closing pages complete the journey of self-discovery with a quiet moment between two characters. Zdarsky closes out the story with a strong ending fitting of the characters that have stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Loo and Alleyne shift focus to the conversations with the imagery of this book. The use of the white background for God and Lucifer’s talk gave the moment a completely different feel than the other stories going on. It’s a contrast to Alex and Francis being stick in their darkness surroundings. Where the talk bring hope, Alex’s situation has been shrouded with darkness. Readers can connect with the hopelessness of the capture.

Once all the stories start coming together in the latter half, the mood is leveled up with the coloring and lettering. The final stand for one character reflects the noble sacrifice being made. It is also complemented with strong emotional reactions amongst the family. The pain and sorrow in certain characters faces speak volumes. With a parting full page visual to the world of the diner, the story concludes with an enjoyable image. There is no other way the series could part way with readers with other than this shot. The team delivered on some incredible storytelling.

The supernatural saga of comic’s favorite diner concludes with a strong finale. Zdarsky orchestrates a layered conclusion with superb writing. Loo, Alleyne, and Cvetkovic provide a bittersweet farewell with dramatic visuals. It’s closing time for this wildly imaginative tale and a true disservice to your collection not to add this chapter.

Mr. Sinister has always been a problem to the X-Men. In this story, he has become a problem for the entire universe. Ten years in the future, Nathaniel Essex has now ascended on a whole new plain. Essex is Enigma. Xavier failed to stop the rise to power. Left with little options, Xavier seeks to rewrite history.

The plan is simple on paper: Kill Moira McTaggert before she realizes she’s a mutant. With her powers never manifesting, the Krakoan Era never is born. It’s a desperate plan, but so are the times they live in.

This chapter begins Enigma narrating the pasts of notable key players in Mutant kind. A Young Moira. Jean Grey. Cyclops. Xavier himself. Enigma knows what they all mean to his endgame. Xavier’s moves have peaked Enigma’s interests.

Stationed on No-Place X, Xavier holds court to Rachel Summers, Rasputin IV and Cypher. Xavier lets it known that his plan is the only option left. Listening in to the conversation is a captured Mother Righteous. One of the Essex clones, Righteous shrugs off the attempts to save. Xavier answers in kind and never responds.

Readers sit back as Xavier senses the pressure of failure. Righteous’ banter with the heroes only fuels Xavier’s plans. Once the talking stops, the moves begin. The action swings into full throttle. The pace never stops until the final pages.

Once the dust settles, fans watch as two major players are set on a collision course. Who will be the last one standing? The parting images of this chapter will definitely have fans talking. Brace for the start of an epic conclusion in the making.

Gillen leans heavy into Xavier’s desperation. The conversations with Righteous support the extreme levels. Throughout the series, that has been a notable takeaway that continues to grow. There is one great one-liner about “ants and Galactus” that will leave readers caught up in the moment.

The banter with Xavier and Rasputin IV is another strong point to the issue. A conversation takes place that is heart-breaking but reflects the dire times that exist. It’s a contrast to Moira and Nimrod. With the walls caving in, Gillen writes their paranoia splendidly. It’s another key element that balances ut all the big action taking place.

Silva and Curiel present some memorable points in this story. The background narration panels tie in the past and gives a quick refresher into the pages being told. Xavier’s defiance to Righteous boastfulness was an easy connection via their facial reactions.

However, The fight sequences will be the ones most talked about. It’s big action with near-full page imagery. These spectacular visions lead readers right into the final act. With a near full page panel to close with, the art continues to encompassing the “big event” feel and running with it. This leads to all wins for the readers.

The saga of the X-Men’s final stand strives forward with another excellent issue. With Gillen mixing in some touching humor along with the action, the intensity of Charles Xavier shines through. Silva’s impeccable art raises to new levels which fans won’t be able to get enough of. You won’t want to miss this one!

BLASFAMOUS #1 (DSTLRY)

For this entry, fans prepare for another new series from one of comics’ fastest rising companies. Since its’ debut in 2023, DSTLRY has made waves with its loaded roster of creators and imaginative storytelling. Stemming from The Devil’s Cut to Somna, the brand has pushed the creative boundaries with each venture.

BLASFAMOUS #1 by MIRKA ANDOLFO (Punchline), Gianluca Papi and Fabio Amelia looks to continue that streak with its’ debut chapter.

Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening here.

The story begins in an Italian church a long time ago. The crucifix hanging above the alter is possessed by a devil. It begins to speak to a woman holding someone burned and deceased at the feet of the sacred ground. The pitch is made: a soul for a life fulfilled with wonder. The woman accepts it. Her name is Clelia.

Fast forward 600 years later. The world is enamored with a mysterious church. It is known as The Order of The New Church of the Triple Crucifix. Their message is going worldwide. It preaches of unity and closeness. However, readers see quickly that there’s a certain figure the masses are more invested in: Clelia.

A mixture of evangelist and pop star, Clelia performs her new single “Kiss of Light.” As she addresses the crowd, she sees a young boy in a wheelchair. With energy shooting out of her eyes, she “heals” the boy and he walks.

After the performance, Clelia sits down for an interview. With the world watching, she gives a standard “perfect” interview. However, in the conversation, it appears her past finally catches her. An image of the burnt woman appears in her mind. Clelica collapses to the floor!

What transpires next is the start of revelations of the angelic pop star’s life. What is she truly? Has the deal she made been worth it?

Readers walk along the highs and lows of fame as Clelia deals with her past in some questionable manners. Will she find her true self or others like Dorothy and Father Lev sway the path. Judging by the final image, Clelia’s problems look to have only scratched the surface.

Andolfo creates a very unique story with Clelia. Seeing the evolution of her character gives readers a deeper sense of the deal she made. Clelia is a person who buys her own hype, but loses herself in the process. The power of fame tests her mental strengths to breaking points.

The dynamic between her and Father Lev is one that leans into many different paths. At points, it seems as one of caring. In others, the controlling presence leaches her spirit to dangerous levels. It fits perfectly with the idea of angels and devils. Once the collapse occurs, Clelia spirals for quite some time. I never seems she regains her footing. Considering the closing pages, Clelia looks to be challenged even further to ascend or fall from grace.

The art encompasses the diversity of the story. The full page image of Cleila agreeing to the deal sends thoughts of danger and blind naivety. Once the pop career beings, it comes across as divine and larger than life. It matches the energy of the lead character superbly.

This is followed by the darkest moment in the book. Once readers see “Bang” and the two page spread involved, it leaves no question about the switch in direction. With the light-hearted coloring driving, the story shifts gears into a surprise final act. It’s a solid blend of emotions mixed in a very complex character.

FINAL POINT: The high price of fame may be too much to bear for Clelia in DSTLRY’s next launch. A darker story hides behind eye-catching art, luring readers into its’ spell. There are many directions where this goes from here, but it will be one fans are sure to be talking about at the LCS.

Superman has returned from the old west (time travel) to come back to a shocking discovery at LexCorp. Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft, along with The Chained and an armored Leticia Luthor have attacked. With a cloud of Green kryptonite filling the room, Superman is weakened.

While on the ground, he hears the plans this team has for him. They want to recruit Superman to their Lex Luthor Revenge Squad. The addition would be the ultimate factor in crushing Luthor for his past actions against the group.

Previous, the story focuses on Lena Luthor (Lex’s daughter) consulting the SuperCorp AI about her file. Readers see the cold reaction Lex has towards his child. Lena’s grandmother walks in and discusses what was divulged.

Readers see how the building to Superman’s return went down. From the deadly duo’s initial moves to Letica’s eventual betrayal, the final moves are set in place for Superman’s return. Once he is taken down, there is little options left.

How does Superman survive this situation? The drama ramps as it appears all is lost. Once the final pages begin, readers see why no matter what, few people understand Superman like Lex does. This also applies in reverse as the closing image sets forth a damaging reveal which the Man of Steel’s world may not recover from.

Williamson catches readers up to speed before sending them into a action filled close. The motives of Pharm and Graft have challenged Luthor at every move. Seeing the deep level play to inflict a deep wound hits readers with a unique thought. Seeing their plan unfold proves for an entertaining ride.

The closing points mirrors classic Superman reactions. Its’ fallout is another example of how Williamson refreshes the dynamic between Superman and Luthor for a challenging path forward. The series continues to raise a high bar for all Superman fans to enjoy.

Baldeón and Lokus start off with a strong two page spread with the squad’s “recruitment” of Superman. The dynamic between Letica and Lena varies at multiple times. The visuals use it for a great start to Letica’s eventual turn. The action images later capture Superman truly in his element of fighting. This all leads into a lasting panel setting a dangerous course for the future of Metropolis.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The return home isn’t always welcome for the Man of Steel. The Lex Luthor Revenge Squad makes their final move with Williamson pacing the moves with great writing. Baldeón, Lokus and Maher construct energetic imagery with big reveals in the closing moments of the chapter. This is one Superman story you won’t want to miss.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #24 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, the end is truly near. Anytime DARKSEID appears in DC Comics, fans know that the stakes are grave. This is the case with the current story involving two legendary heroes. A trip to Earth 22 for a rescue mission hasn’t gone exactly as planned. Now, BATMAN and SUPERMAN must find a way to stop Darkseid capturing the Anti-Life equation or it will truly be “KINGDOM COME”.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #24 by MARK WAID, DAN MORA, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands looks to give fans a proper send-off to the return to Kingdom Come.

Let’s see how Earth-22’s final stand plays out

When a missing apprentice (David Sikela aka Thunderman) is found to be on Earth-22, Batman and Superman attempt to find the young hero and return him home. The planet he is residing on is one longtime DC fans know. It is the home of the legendary series Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross.

Upon arrival, they come face-to-face with a distorted version of their world. GOG is ruling over the land. His protege is the missing Sikela, whom is now known as MAGOG! Gog is planning on leading Earth’s heroes into a war with APOKOLIPS. This is stopped by Batman, Superman and some notable DC heroes.

However, it’s not enough to stop Darseid from entering the fray. Gog has something he wants: a part of the Anti-Life equation.

This issue begins with the shocking looks of the remaining DC heroes. Superman teams up with his Earth-22 counterpart to slow Darkseid down. Batman signals for the others to regroup. The action ramps up as two Kryptonians try the impossible. Their efforts fall short. Other heroes try but fall short as well.

Once the dust settles, Darkseid attempts takes his shot at Gog. The only one left to stop him is Magog! What chance does the young hero have?

Readers see quickly that a choice is made that changes everything. It’s fallout challenges the two title characters more than anyone realizes. This leads into an emotional closing act that divulges many secrets. It’s a fitting conclusion that does proper justice to the original 1996 series. Brace for a highly impactful ending.

There is always a fine line of what defines a hero. With Waid’s first venture into this theme, readers witnessed how a drastic action can cause a spiral out of control. The journey of David Sikela has echoed that idea. The tutelage of Superman vs. Gog gives a backdrop to the presence of Darkseid. Sikela’s action hits readers with a painful picture of the future.

The writing showcases the bond between the World’s finest as well. With the closing act, their friendship support carries the heroes through a dark moment. This leads to a powerful close, circling back to what inspires all heroes: hope.

Mora and Bonvillian cap off events with strong imagery. Right from the start, the image of Darkseid and the heroes’ reaction sets a high bar for the remainder of the chapter. The fight scenes play off as bold and eye-catching each panel. After Sikela’s actions, the reactions of all parties range from shock to anger.

The full page panel of a haunting presence will full grab readers’ attention. This leads into a fantastic full page panel that answers some lingering questions. There is also a two-page spread that pays a great homage to the original source material. The chapter ends on such a high note that fans will want to dive back in just to stare at the art over and over alone.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

The Return to Kingdom Come doesn’t disappoint as the World’s Finest face a threat that hits close to the heart. Waid orchestrates an intense fallout with Mora providing mind-blowing visuals to bring the story to a thunderous close. This issue continues to cement this series’ place as one of (if not) the best superhero book at the LCS each time out.

The final form of Evil. That is what Dr. Daniel Captio has created. After his rejection from Bruce Wayne in Batman: The Knight, Captio has come to Gotham to train Joker to be Batman’s ultimate rival. Captio’s work involves training Joker to have multiple personalities to handle situations. This mirrors Batman’s own Zur-En-Arrh. In Joker’s case, there are now three he can play with as needed.

Joker thanks Captio by killing him. Now without any fear holding him back, the reign of terror begins…

Meanwhile in the future, Joker has turned the residents of Gotham into versions of himself. During Batman’s investigation, he finds his Bat Family among the victims. Catwoman has kept them safe. However, Joker has thwarted the good intentions. With the Bat-Family poised to attack, Batman strives to survive.

This issue picks up with the family poised to attack. The older Batman throws all his smoke bombs to escape. With the family loose, trying to save the city looks bleak. It is even bleaker with the Joker in hot pursuit.

Back in the past, Bruce Wayne is hosting a fundraiser for the Gotham Opera. A suspended Jim Gordan calls into Batman informing of the corrupt officers tied to The Red Hood Gang. Commissioner McLeod is currently leading the gang. Gordan sees them making a move after a big drug bust. Taking a risk, he goes into the police station to spy without Batman.

Inside the precinct, Manny Gabris (another Red Hood Gang member) celebrates the big score. With strength in numbers and a plan in place, they look to rob the police station of drugs and evidence.

However, there is someone at the station filing a complaint. A clown with a very vested interest in the two prime members. All it takes is one reckless action by Gabris and all Hell breaks loose.

Readers watch along as all the combustible elements finally explode at the Gotham PD. Joker vs. his old Gang with Jim Gordon caught in the crossfire. How will Gordon last without Batman to help?

As for the future, the final confrontation between Batman and Joker comes to a dramatic finish. Can Gotham be saved or has the Joker accomplished his endgame?

With each conclusion, each question is answered. Both stories conclude on a strong note. The past ends with a lasting moment for the ages. The future ending leaves a question for readers to ponder as they read Joker stories from here on out. It is a fitting bookend for a character who truly defines brilliant insanity.

Zdarsky plays up to Joker’s strengths with this final chapter. In the early days, the evolution of Joker’s planning is in full display. The attack on the former gang hits with precision. Even with the chaos around him, Joker navigates it to connect on his targets. Gordon’s portion with this story stands out as well. The way he thwarts McLeod’s plans is vintage Gordon. It also might play into Joker’s attacks on the Gordon family down the road. The final moments are a great homage to “A Bronx Tale”.

The future story is a great final encounter diving back into the Love/Hate relationship between Batman and Joker. The old rivals know each other so well, yet there is something new learned in this encounter. Zarsky builds this element right to the conclusion. The ending moments leave readers with the parting shot and a new perspective. It’s a fitting conclusion for the closing chess match between the historic rivals.

The art teams showcase the multiple levels to each take. Camuncoli and company make the Gotham PD into a warzone in a short amount of time. Once Garbis makes his move, the imagery reflects the speed of the story. not lost in this is Joker’s laughing and evil smile. This is exemplified with a full page image revealing his true nature to those around him. The sadistic nature of Joker plays through right to the ending. It’s a fitting close as a new chapter begins.

FINAL POINT: 9

The history of the Clown Prince of Crime shines with the closing chapter of Joker: Year One. Zdarsky takes readers into a thrill-ride of dark madness with superb writing. The art teams construct solid action and moody imagery to exemplify Joker’s terror. For anyone who wants to peek inside Joker’s mind, this story needs to be in your collection.

In a Harlem hospital, Spider-Man checks in on Randy Roberston. Randy was one of the first victims of the Gang War. Spidey promises Randy’s father, Robbie, that he will be end this and return. Robbie simply tells him “Get It Done”.

On the rooftop of the hospital are Spidey’s allies in this fight. Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Daredevil, She-Hulk and Tombstone wait for him to join. They know what lies ahead. A trip through hell itself.

Central Park is now the location for the two biggest forces in the war to meet. In one corner, Beetle and her forces. Opposing her is Madame Masque. Masque is the whole reason the war started. It’s fitting she is here in the end. After a final chance to surrender is passed, the time for war has come.

Readers watch as the criminal underworld explodes in broad daylight. Spidey and his friends start to intervene but is it too late? The action never stops at this moment. If you’re looking for a fight, you’ve come to the right chapter.

As the saying goes, all is fair in love and war. The measures to secure victory have no limits. This rings true in the final act. A choice is made that can only lead to dire consequences. The fallout from this could possibly be the tipping point for victory, but at what cost? The final image speaks volumes before capping off events before the big finale looming.

Wells pens the beginning of the book as a somber moment. The writing reflects the toll the war has taken. It also shows the finality of what’s about to come. The image of the heroes on the roof comes across as knowing how huge the stakes are and how deadly it can be to win.

Once the Central Park battle begins, Wells wastes no time getting down to the matter at hand. There are many moving parts involved here. Wells gives Masque and Beetle enough time to connect with readers with their motives. Their dialogue conveys the sense of desperation to win. The closing dialogue will be the most memorable from this issue. Considering the personal nature involved, it felt as a “good-bye” more than anything else. It brought the issue to a nice landing spot before the war ramps up its’ finale next issue.

Romita and company leave a lasting imprint of the emotions involved. The near full page image of the good guys at the hospital showed the gravity of the war. The facial reactions were cold and focused on what was forthcoming.

The panels for Central Park built up the tense atmosphere to a breaking point. Once the first show was fired, the frantic action was in full swing. This is capped off with a great two page spread in the latter portion of the book. This leads into a more quiet moment in the final pages. The panels reflect the personal struggle involved and a choice made. Great full page panel to conclude things for now. It’s a great lead for readers as they prep themselves for the war’s conclusion.

The final battle has arrived! With Spider-Man’s allies the only thing standing in between Masque and Beetle, it’s anyone’s guess who survives. Wells sets things in motion with solid writing. Romita and the team bring the high-level fighting to life with an emotional pause when needed. Expect a monster finale from the events of this chapter.

Dr. Statis and M.O.D.O.K. sit inside Orchis’ space station. Thinking that their plans are succeeding, the mood is high. This is evident in Statis words describing impending objects coming at the station. Readers quickly see how wrong they. at is no mere object. That is Polaris wielding a Celestial skull?!

The skull attacks the ship while Polaris on-boards. This leads to more surprises as Polaris unleashes her forces onto the Orchis agents. Unleash might be the key word as Polaris lets loose a pack of the BROOD onto the ship.

Meanwhile, an Orchis ship is returning to the station with some precious cargo. Wolverine has been captured and the crew thinks they’ve jumping in the right fight. Little do they know they’ve been set up by Colossus, Nightcrawler and Wolverine!

The action picks up as the trio lay waste to the troops. Once they connect with Polaris, their mission is clear: Stop Statis and save Firestar.

On Earth, the rest of the X-Family have their own missions to win. Everyone needs to play their part if there’s any chance to save Mutantkind.

Will they succeed? The dangers loom at every turn. Readers have a thrill-ride in their hands as more moves are made. Judging by the closing moments, a shocking twist might be the game changer moment the X-Men needed or had to avoid at all costs.

In my opinion, this felt like vintage X-Men storytelling (and that’s a BIG win)! Duggan packs in a great deal of action for this chapter. The dueling attack on Orchis in space makes some exciting sequences. Bringing Polaris into the battle in such a dramatic manner set the tone for the fight perfectly.

The side plots moved their stories forward without being lost in the shuffle. Juggling the large cast, Duggan made sure all got their time to progress. There are quite a few panels that fans can’t help but get amped up about. The closing act throws a solid swerve into the mix leading to a very intriguing close.

Werneck and Valenza construct big action throughout this issue. The debut of Polaris into the mix gets a proper full page treatment. When Wolverine gets unleashed, the coloring with the blood flying speaks volumes while being subtle. It’s throwback fighting with a classic lineup.

The interactions with the fellow mutants play very well to the reader. Emma Frost’s panel in the book is perfectly suited for her character. There’s also a Juggernaut portion that fans should rave about as well. The closing moments tie back to a previous portion of the overall story. It caps off the desperate times that the heroes live through. The closing panels add another dynamic into the mix that will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The final stand of the X-Men goes heavy with a classic feel that fans won’t want to miss. Duggan drives vintage elements of the X-Family with the great writing. Werneck and company build electric imagery fitting for the fight of their lives. With the stakes at hand, there’s no better time to watch the fall unfold.

With a 13 yr old stowing away on board a spaceship looking for food, readers became instantly locked in with the story. Now, time has flown by when we catch up to the lead character and the dangers that still loom.

No good deed goes unpunished. This is what Abi learned the hard way. The 13yr old attempted to help her family by stealing food from luxury starships that stop by her planet. On one fateful run, Abi doesn’t escape in time. Now along for the ride and far from home, Abi must figure out what to do next.

This chapter picks up with a ship speeding through the galaxy. After the initial run, the narration paints the picture of despair as the Sabs failed attempt to take over the ship has forced them into hiding. The group, who’s taken Abi, in scrape to survive.

Meanwhile, the “upper class” passengers have embarked on a hyper sleep. In their slumber, guards watch over them and the ship. As the rebels embark on another scavenger run, they think they find a huge score. The only problems it’s heavily guarded. A voice speaks out saying they will handle it. Readers see it’s Abi, but no the same one they remember from issue #1.

Abi is much older and wears the years of survival on her shoulders. The latest task sets Abi into dangerous territory. What does she encounter on the latest run?

Readers see a shocking reveal as Abi makes a discovery. How does this new dynamic play into her future? The mystery of the ship dives further into wonder. The conversations will lead Abi into reliving a past thought to be lost. However, the final act will send the story into a shocking tailspin as to where things line up next.

Jock sets a few new paths in motion with this latest chapter. The time jump with Abi shows how much she’s adapted to her new environment. Her demeanor seems broken and battle-tested. This is evident in the mission shown in the first act. Once she makes her discovery, the story takes a huge twist in direction.

The writing latches back to her past, giving more layers to the debut. The conversations she has become emotional with the pain she’s felt. Jock does an excellent job hiding the true antagonist’s motives in this scenario. It helps to build up for the big surprise in the final pages. With the parting shot, it’s anyone’s guess where we go from here.

The art continues to bring the desolate times of Abi to a stark reality. The moments with the Sabs capture the rough way of life she’s been experiencing on the ship. Readers can easily see the anguish and wear of the everyday life. The mission at hand moves swiftly, building on a few ideas.

The fallout with her companions is brought to life with vivid coloring. It shadows the true dangers at hand. Abi’s confusion leaders readers into wondering what is truly happening here. Following this, the emotional expressions with her conversations make a solid impact on readers. It grounds the story just enough to see the true toll Abi has been enduring. This all get sent into a new route with the closing images. The parting pages are simple but tell such a terrifying moment.

It’s a true testament of how Jock masters storytelling in his work.

The actions don’t sit well with Jeannie. As they talk, Jody mentions a stolen car that is delayed from selling. A mention of a man named “Boodie” emerges. It is also met with a threat next time Jody sees him behind it. As luck would have it, who’s driving next to them? Boodie.

Readers watch as a high speed pursuit follows. Once the chase ends at Boodie’s trailer home, the action revs up. Suffice to say, the holidays begin with a bang.

The time jumps to six months later. The family has moved to Deepwater, Missouri. The new move seems to be doing well for Jody. When money comes into question, Jody reveals that it really isn’t an issue. When Jeannie asks, why, the subject is dodged.

However, what transpires next sets everything in flux. Readers see there is an accident. The fallout sends a ripple effect through the family as more clues are revealed to Jody’s financial status. When tragedy strikes, a choice is made that sets a whole new path for the family. The final image leaves no doubt that desperate times call for desperate measures. This means nothing but excitement for readers as they lock in for the long haul.

This can be shown in some private moments between the couple as the repercussions of Jody’s life have now come back tenfold. Spiraling from the events of Transformers #2, a familiar face is now on the run. Conrad S. Hauser aka Duke has been framed for murders of Dr. Adele Burkhart and her “alien survivors” group. This all stems from Duke’s investigation into M.A.R.S. Industries.

Before her death, Burkhart gave Duke an item with her research. With this information, the hunter has become the hunted. Duke is looking for somewhere to hide and regroup. His journey has led him to the home of Lance J. Steinberg aka Clutch.

The old friends reunite and not a moment too soon. Duke is injured from his encounter with the “police” (M.A.R.S. military). When they start mending Duke, the information given from Burkhart was activated.

What is on the device? Readers see a map with notable locations on it. One spot stands out in the Midwest of the US. The activation tips off an all-too familiar character of the G.I. Joe universe. Unfortunately for Duke, that person isn’t the only one after him.

The fight is brought right to Duke’s forefront. Behind the bullets are General Hawk’s hand picked fighters on their search and “rescue” mission. Things move very fast as the action sets a high bar. Once the bullets stop flying, the final image will have readers buzzing as another legendary character now enters the field. Buckle in for a high-octane chapter!

DUKE #2 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, and Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound entertainment/Image Comics - Cover: Ricardo López Ortiz)

Williamson puts the pedal to the metal with this latest chapter. The banter between Duke and Clutch plays well to be the “calm before the storm” forthcoming. It’s a great blend of humor and honesty with the recent events. Once the action starts up, the chapter goes into a whole different direction.

The new characters make a huge first impression in-between the bullets flying. Readers get caught up in the excellent action that Williamson slides in building them up under the radar. The conclusion of the fighting takes Duke into uncharted territory. Seeing what Duke is confronted with adds more to the mystery at large. This all ties into the latest character introduction on the final page. Where the story heads from here is anyone’s guess but the writing locks you in to leave all those cares behind until the next chapter.

Reilly and Bellaire dip into a few character moments before revving the action up. The initial encounter with Clutch fills the panels with the sense of their deep friendship. The panels speak volumes until the bullets start flying. This comes readers way via a full page panel introduction of a fan-favorite. From here, the pages are flooded with intense imagery reflecting the stakes at hand.

Once the battle is over, the art builds up where Duke and Clutch are stationed. The full page shot gives readers a greater sense of what the location is comprised with. It adds more to the final scene impact as the unlikely figure is poised to become a big part in an already impressive series.

Once they arrive, they confront the BOGEYMAN. Their rescue mission is derailed when the entity used his powers to make each member confront their fears.

This issue kicks off with God meeting with the Bogeyman on an astral level. Thinking he has the upper hand, the evil soul tries claiming he is the only God now.

The story shifts gears to Joy at her mother’s grave. Joy’s sister is blaming her for the death. Cynthia is on the streets, begging and disheveled. Andrea is running form her fellow officers. Ian is isolated and alone in a desert area.

Meanwhile Frank has been put into a prison limbo all his own. Coming across the Yeti, Frank starts figuring out the Takers plans. Will this lead to finding Alex?

The family continues a grueling onslaught of their worst nightmares. What follows next is a true test of how this family have come together over time. Zdarsky puts the family into the most uncomfortable scenarios in this issue. Knowing Joy’s family issues, readers can easily sense her pain as she feels the burden she’s accused of. Cynthia having a fall from grace reflects how her character has been more flawed than previously thought. The other members have their time as well, but all share the same themes.

The panels with Frank lead readers into a great sub-plot with the end drawing closer. Throughout this series, the writing has been about solving the riddle of their strengths. This issue caps it off with a resounding answer before the last call is made.

Loo gives ample time to focus on the doubt and anxiousness of each member. The facial reactions speak loudly as the torment is taking place. The fallout resonates with fans as the high emotions shine in each panel. The panels with God and the Bogeyman pop off the page with the excellent coloring by Alleyne. The closing image is perfect as it bookends the original series themes. Loo presents an excellent full page panel bringing everything together before tearing it apart in the next chapter.

With a fateful trip into confronting their fears, the family of the All-Nighter gives readers a memorable chapter before its’ finale. Zdarsky’s superb writing brings the fear front and center. Loo’s impressive art captures the essence of the family’s drive so special. It’s a bittersweet lead into what will be an instant classic finale.

The chapter opens with a flashback towards the apparent death of Vladimir Sokov aka John Ladd. Ladd was Scott’s lover during their time on Project: Crimson. The narration follows as the red energy that pulled him underwater. This leads to the danger now standing as the Red Lantern.

The saga shifts to Bobruisk, Russia in 1923. A young Ladd is leaving his home. His father is yelling in the distance. The narration reflects feelings of resentment and determination. The determination is what drives Ladd to join the Russian army. After a general chooses him for spy training, his first assignment centers around a weapon.

This is no ordinary weapon. Readers find out its the myth of the “Crimson Flame Of Death”. With this in the possession of the U.S. Military, Ladd is assigned to infiltrate and steal the weapon. The unknowing accomplice to this goal: Alan Scott.

The story spirals through the lies weaved by Ladd. Using the affections of Scott as a decoy, readers see what levels Ladd went to for this mission. Its’ fallout is even more intense with the emotional wounds re-opened for Scott.

Get ready for a personal and highly combustible sequence to unfold as the Lanterns have laid out all their cards on the table. Or have they? The closing image proves all is fair in love and war with a shocking conclusion. Brace for impact with this one!

The peaks and lows that Sheridan puts the title character through with Ladd’s origin hits strong with readers. The complexity of his character actions leads Ladd into a deception that comes close to breaking Scott completely. This pours into a reaction that jumps right of the page.

Following this moment is where readers see Scott start rebounding from Ladd’s tormenting barrage. There are quiet moments that reflect the love once shared between Scott and Ladd before leading back into the heroic play of Scott. Sheridan has kept tis story grounded around emotion and that is a theme the resonates with each panel, right to the last shot. Another great read.

Tormey and the art team guide readers through a focused look at the birth of a spy. The flsback panls break each important moment down for an easy connect with readers. The focus sways from Ladd’s mission to the blind deception played out under Scott’s caring soul.

This builds towards a full page shot of Scott’s rage boiling over. The flowing images dive the action into an intimate moment where Scott appears to get the upper hand. All this leads to a strong final full page panel indicating to where Scott’s heart lies now after the truth is revealed.

The chapter begins with Peacemaker coming to from his encounter with Nightwing. Amanda Waller tells him to stay still as there is a battle in front of them. The combatants? Raven and her evil self, who was the masked Doctor Hate!

Raven teleports Nightwing away before the fight begins. Knowing Waller’s plans, the Titans put forth a plan to save the infected population. The spores from Beast Boy have caused humans to turn into savage beasts. Drawing the spores out is the only way to save people. Knowing that the spores gravitate towards powerful beings, Superman (Jon Kent) is the go-to for the test run. Who is their test subject? An infected Bruce Wayne aka BATMAN!

Readers see how Nightwing’s plan plays out. Batman reverts back to human and reconnects in an emotional moment. From here, the Titans lead the charge in preventing Waller and the Bureau of Sovereignty from taking their plans to action. Will they pull it off?

The answers are provided in a conclusion that lives up to its’ hype. The moments feel huge with consistent pressure mounting on the heroes. Just when readers think all is going to be ok, a few swerves are thrown in that will play into more stories. The time of Beast World might be over but fans will be talking about this conclusion for quite some time.

With Taylor mixing in many surprises, readers have a great deal to look forward to with this finale. Seeing the emergence of Dick Grayson as the leader of the DCU heroes, his biggest challenge is met with patience and flaws. It’s not a perfect run with what he is attempting. Taylor’s writing reflects the heroic nature of what he represents. The moment with Batman sets forth a strong chain of events that pushes the charge forward.

The sheer defiance of Waller is another big element of this book. Knowing she is the mastermind behind the public attack, there is a sense of danger whenever she is on he page. Her conclusion in this story sends shockwaves throughout the DCU. The overall conclusion takes readers on a wild ride of excitement and drama. This leads to the epilogue which guarantees the new movement of evil in the DCU is far from over.

The art teams (three in total) shine in the finale. The fight sequence with Raven and Doctor Hate gave readers a sinister feel as the battle prolonged. The reconnection of Batman and Nightwing gave a brief break of the drama for a more sympathetic element with the Bat-Family.

The panels where Nightwing presents his plan to the government also hit the marks. The showcase of Grayson’s confidence leads into the heroes attempt to thwart Waller’s advances. These lead into some outstanding images of the heroes rising to the occasion. The final image is a fitting one for the conclusion but is upstaged by the epilogue. Knowing this is Reis’s final DC series before heading to Ghost Machine, the parting shot sends readers off in style and shock before its’ next phase.

This issue is staged as an introduction into all the Ghost Machine titles. The opening page is a statement defining what this company is all about. This is perfect for new readers to fully grasp what will make this imprint stand out from others.

From here, the book heads back into the world of GEIGER (by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank). As a family sits around a campfire, a man is telling the story of a man whose contact with a nuclear blast has changed him forever. In this same time period, Tariq Geiger is facing off against a group of strangers. One makes an offer that stops him cold in his tracks. Geiger is toyed with the idea of becoming fully human again.

During the ordeal, others are mentioned as possible adversaries to the radioactive anti-hero. That person is REDCOAT (by Johns and Bryan Hitch). Simon Pure narrates his tale of fighting for the British in the Revolutionary War. After he is shot in the head, his journey begins as an immortal.

The journey ties into the Unknown War taking place inside the shared universe of the Unnamed Universe. Readers are gifted a timeline to follow events as many moving parts comprise an ever-winding tale that is certain to grab readers attention.

The next phase of Ghost Machine is ROOK: EXODUS by Johns and Jason Fabok. Readers witness a fascinating new world where Humans with unique helmets of power affect the animals species they are patterned after. One such human known as Rook has control over certain aviary creatures. His journey has him on the trail of the mysterious Direwolf. How will this tie into the “War Of Wardens”? Readers look to receive that answer in April.

Readers next stop is the all-ages line of FAMILY ODYSSEYS. Peter Tomasi and Francis Manupal are the creative team behind THE ROCKETFELLERS. A family from the future has been sent into witness relocation. Where better to send a family of the future than the past? Their adventures into normalcy look to entertain while their future’s past catches up with them.

Set in the same all-ages line is HORNSBY & HALO (by Tomasi and Peter Snejbjerg). What happens when Angel and Devil families swap children? That’s what readers find out with the stories of Rose Hornsby and Zack Halo. Warwick, New York will never be the same as the young leads explore their lives while outside forces have a vested interest.

Last but not least is HYDE STREET. The horror-led line features the works of Johns and Ivan Reis. In Dallas, Georgia, a man is being unruly towards a young boy. After the encounter, the boy appears to put something mischievous into work. This is presented after a vintage Hyde Street Amusement pages by JOHNS, REIS,• DANNY MIKI & LAMONT MAGEE.

Mixed in the middle is “Devour” (by MAYTAL ZCHUT & Reis). A woman’s dream of transforming her body appears to become a nightmare with an item called “Devour”. Once the final image hits here, readers will have no questions concerning the chilling tales created via Comics’ next big thing.

Right from the start, the one-shot makes every story VERY reader friendly. Keeping stories to the bare minimum presses creators to simplify introductions. This is a great formula as each story has enough to tease where things go after here. Plus, the addition of character bios (ala DC’s “Who’s Who”) is so invaluable to make the connections of “Characters First”.

This really hits its’ mark with the Unnamed Universe characters as Geiger and Redcoat have been featured more than most others. As the prelude for Geiger’s new direction leads, Johns balances Geiger’s panel time while building up Redcoat. It leads to a solid open-ended conclusion for the regular series to start in April.

ROOK: EXODUS, looks to be the wild-card of the current slate of books. Combining sci-fi fantasy with a looming mystery, Fabok’s art depicts a landscape of endless possibilities. This seems like an adventure that isn’t going to be like anything else out on the market.

The FAMILY ODYSSEYS line makes an excellent debut as well. The ROCKETFELLERS has a unique concept behind it with Tomasi’s blending in the traditional family dynamic with catching drama. Manupal’s art shines bringing in great action moments. This is led in with a full page introduction that kicks things off for readers of their new favorite family.

HORNSBY and HALO lures fans in with a deceptive tale. Tomasi’s set up brings a tale wrapped with divine intervention. Paired with Snejbjerg’s art, the story of Rose and Zach has much more than meets the eye going on.

The horror feel of HYDE STREET & its’ related books blend vintage themes with excellent artwork. The classic “amusements” by Johns and Magee along with Devour by Zchut have such a throwback feel that readers can’t help but become invested in these tales.

Reis builds up the presence of Mr. X-Ray by leading the unlucky soul through the town till the final moments. The closing panel fits perfectly in not only introducing the readers to this story and the terror forthcoming.

Once Wilson Fisk arrived on the scene, The momentum the unlikely alliance of Spider-Man, She-Hulk & Tombstone had slowly started fading. Fisk’s son, The Rose made a power play against The Beetle, Tombstone’s daughter. During their confrontation, Fisk made it known he had won this round. This alluding to Beetle being taken off the board.

As the confusion mounts, readers see that Fisk’s plan wasn’t to kill the Beetle. It was to remove The Rose from the fight. With his outlook on these kinds of wars, Fisk knows what levels are needed to win and he has no intention of his family to venture further with this current situation.

Kingpin and his forces leave the scene, but no without dropping a key piece of information to Tombstone. He tells him the war isn’t for New York City. Fisk claims it was an attack on the Maggia by Madame Masque. Who says there is no honor amongst thieves?

Claiming victory, the Beetle makes plans to advance further. However, there is another party interested in talking about her moves: Madame Masque. What spirals from this moment puts an action in place that will be a defining moment in the conflict. As the final images are witnessed, the tension can’t get any higher leading into next issue.

Wells sets up a nice bait and switch with Fisk’s actions in this chapter. Knowing the ramifications of a conflict like this, Fisk isn’t willing to lose his son. The change of heart is one that may catch readers off-guard. It’s also one to watch as Fisk could be waiting in the wings to dismiss whoever is left standing in the end.

The conversation between Masque and Beetle gives a greater insight to both. Their histories have forged their present. Both show an unwillingness to back down. Being so close to victory, readers can sense how desperate both will go to win. The final act brings everything to a fever pitch with a dramatic set-up for the next round. With the war soon ending, expect major fireworks next time.

Romita, Hanna and Menyz balnace out the drama with small dashes of humor in key moments. The subtle talk with Kingpin and Typhoid Mary adds to the new outlook Kingpin has. The reaction of Spider-man is priceless and honest. This leads into Fisk’s parting words impacting Tombstone with great uncertainty. The body language in these panels speak volumes.

The conversation between Beetle and Masque reflects the emotional tolls of their past. The facial expressions leave no doubt in the reader’s eyes of the intensity of their drives to win the fight. This all leads into a stunning two page spread to drop a big exclamation point on events heading into the next chapter.

The drive to emerge from a father’s shadow leads this chapter into a showdown for the ages. Wells takes readers into the battle with an emotionally driven tale. Romita and the creative team bring out the determination and unbreakable will for victory that will push the war into a dangerous direction.

With the events of Transformers #2 spiraling into Duke #1, it was only a matter of time until COBRA and their charismatic leader showed their evil heads into the picture.

COBRA COMMANDER #1 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Annalisa Leoni and Rus Wooten re-introduce the main antagonist of G.I. Joe with a fresh new take. Let’s take a closer look at the early stages of COBRA’s ascent.

Under the fall of snow, a man walks into a bar. As the line might sound familiar, this scenario is anything but. At “No Man’s Land” rest stop/bar, a stranger walks in demanding a vehicle. A patron steps up and doesn’t respect the request. After brushing the stranger off, the patron walks outside. He is followed and informed his vehicle will work just fine. An altercation is alluded to with frightening imagery.

The bartender walks out to catch up with the patron. The following moments are filled with terror and shock. All that’s left is the patron’s dead body and a snake shaped emblem in the snow, forged in blood.

The story shifts to an enigmatic city. The people seem to be prospering while reptilian creatures roam free. The peace is quickly dashed as there’s an uprising started.

With “Cobra LALALALALALA” yelled as a battle cry, a mob attacks a building housing scientists. Someone screams about surrendering. He is shot dead by a man with an all too familiar face plate mask. The masked man’s words are defiant as he insists the research be protected at all costs.

As the fight rages on, another scientist doesn’t realize the explosive in their hands. The building explodes and the masked man is severely burnt. This begins a descent into evil and treachery with secrets revealed. Readers better brace for impact because there is a MONSTEROUS one right before the final act sends the masked man onto another course of plans of world conquering. Consider yourself warned now. You don’t want to miss this!

With a haunting feel dominating these pages, Williamson wastes no time in bringing the legendary villain’s story to life. The opening act keeps readers guessing as Commmander is vague with his words but speaks loud with actions. The ruthlessness shown on a few panels becomes the pace setter for the rest of the chapter.

The backstory gives a different look at Commander’s beginnings. Being a scientist defending his research, Williamson write him almost sympathetically. The key word there is almost. As the explosion fallout reveals more, the use of smoke and mirrors with Commander’s story perfectly sets up readers for BIG reveals later. The chapter’s hold on the audience never lets up and leaves them with an interesting final moment before ending a solid opening salvo.

Milana and Leoni never shy away from the cunning and devious side of Commander. The opening moment where the patron is killed is never shown. The panels paint enough of a picture (along with Wooten’s lettering) to leave readers a lasting impression of how things are going to go moving forward.

The flashback moments never tips their hand until after the explosion. The fallout is filled with unapologetic panels showing the consequences of Commander’s actions. There’s a fair share of big panels (including a face-off with another known Cobra character) but a two page spread will steal the show. Readers will be buzzing about this incredible image as the story here will have BIG ramifications. The closing act teases a few events while never letting readers question Commander’s drive and evil. This is definitively not a story of redemption, but unrelenting drive. Excellent work with the storytelling in this chapter.

Evil without a face. Through the superb writing of Williamson readers see the early scheming and debauchery of an iconic villain. The stellar imagery of Milana, Leoni and Wooten add a touch of terror within the unhinged drive of a person with bad intentions. This is going to be a story you simply can’t escape.

SUPERMAN #10 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the past is the present with a DC Icon. Recovering form his injuries sustained against Sam Stryker aka The Chained, SUPERMAN Wastes no time heading into action. However, during an encounter with Marilynn Moonlight and Mr. Graft, the Man of Steel is sent into the past. Readers see the Man of Steel trying to deal truth, justice and a better tomorrow in the old wild west!

The issue begins with with a frantic chase to find out what happened to Superman. In Supercorp, Lois Lane, mercy Graves and Lena Luthor are trying to sort things out. Lex Luthor can hear them and gives his thoughts. Suddenly, an alarm goes off. With danger knocking at the door of the building, Superman might not save the day in this timeline….

Meanwhile in the past, Supes and Marilynn ride their horses across the open plains. Their destination is a shocking one. Readers see the pair arrive on the scene of a slaughter. Travelers are lying dead. Their wagons destroyed. A crime has been committed. This might sound like a standard old West story, but its anything but. The weapons used were lasers.

The culprit is an old Superman foe who’s more than willing to stake his claim as the fastest draw in the West. With how weakened Superman is from his previous fight, there might be a different outcome for this rogue.

Readers see that the Man of Tomorrow is ready to fight for justice in the past. Luckily he has some help with Marilynn. The question becomes: will it be enough? The answer gives more clarity to how timeless the character is. Moonlight does get ample time to connect with readers on her story before the final act shifts gears. Time does run out on the closing pages as a new danger has emerged that poses another question offsetting the current stat quo of the Last Son of Krypton.

Even displaced through time, Williamson keeps Superman grounded in the ideals he exemplifies. The investigation into the robbery is halted by a selfless act. This only makes the inevitable confrontation even more impactful. The traditional superhero themes beam across Clark’s actions.

Once the spotlight shifts to Moonlight, it gives the readers a deeper connection to the character as her story has only just begun. The closing act throws a big curveball to where things are heading. This is something this series does frequently and it’s always a win for the readers.

The art leaves a lasting impression on readers throughout this journey. There is a gorgeous two page image of Superman and Monnlight riding through the plains. It lets the moment sink in with readers about how this isn’t just another Superman tale.

The confrontation with the main villain is also a gift to fans with another two page spread conveying the emotions of the challenge. The detailed time on Moonlight connects her story with the audience, leaving more for the next encounter. After an iconic vision of Superman doing what he does best, the closing moments ramp up towards a final image that leaves readers wondering where we go from here.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The Man of Tomorrow searches for truth and justice in the past with a conclusion that simply hits the bullseye. Fantastic writing with amazing visuals bring out the best of DC’s franchise hero as this current series scores another huge win.

RISE OF THE POWERS OF X #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT - 2024)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this edition, the Krakoan Era’s last stand begins via Marvel Entertainment. As the era started with two series (House of X/Powers of X), it concludes with another pair of stories that will redefine the Mutant age. In the present, the Mutants have to deal with the Fall of the House. As for the future, they need to deal with the Rise of Powers.

Rise of the Powers of X #1 by Kieron Gillen, R.B. Silva, David Curiel, Clayton Cowles sets the stage for the X-Men’s final attempt to stop Nimrod once and for all. Let’s dive in and see what’s happening now.

Ten years in the future, Nimrod and Omega sentinel are standing over a fallen diamond Emma Frost with destruction all around them. With Sentinel’s help, one fate has been avoid. Nimrod is ready to crown victory but Sentinel has other thoughts. With little resistance left, Can the X-Men find another way to win?

Meanwhile, Gambit and Mystique are following the plans of Professor X at the Henry Gyrich Memorial Detention Center. Knowing Emma has fallen, the pair play their part. It’s not without a fan moment that is fitting considering their family history. With a noble sacrifice, both Gambit and Mystique are dead but their mission accomplished.

The information they were sent to get was worth the sacrifices if it means an end to the hell they live in. It has been transferred to Charles Xavier. Professor X is camped out at the broken S.W.O.R.D station in space. Leading a team comprised of Iron Man (An A.I. Version of Tony Stark), ShadowTiger (Kate Pryde), Captain Krokoa (Kamala Khan) and Wolverine, Xavier sends them to Phobos with a simple mission: Find Mr. Sinister who’s being held there.

With a final launch, the heroes make their way to Phobos. Nimrod and company are in pursuit to intervene. What comes next will challenge fate. It’s fallout transcends back to the present. With time running out, choices are made and a big revelation of how things could end. The closing moment will have fans talking as the end is finally near.

From the initial page, Gillen establishes the grave stakes involved with no hesitation. Nimrod’s blind assumption of victory plays well with Sentinel’s worry of failure.

The fighting spirit of the X-Men shines through each scene they’re in. The personal moment with Gambit and Mystique’s final goodbye is perfect for fans that have questioned her feeling about her son-in-law.

The latter portion of the book dives into Xavier’s last play knowing what failure brings. His team of X-Men are aware of the stakes and the writing mirrors their will to win or die. Wolverine has some great lines before leading into a huge moment in the book.

The fallout of the event plays off well as the story transitions back to present time. The ultimate option is a stunning one but shows at what lengths Xavier is willing to descend to for the betterment of Mutant-Kind.

Silva and Curiel construct a hellish environment fitting of Nimrod’s terror. The opening full page makes a big splash as Nimrod stands in the center of the aftermath of his work. The final moments of Gambit and Mystique work to give readers an emotional hit before diving into their final calls.

The Phobos panels and fallout give the issue a heavy aura as the event is that catastrophic if Nimrod wins. there is a great mix of full or near-full page panels that exemplify to gravity of the situation. It’s fallout in present time shows the wear this all has had on the survivors. Knowing what Xavier’s back-up plan is, the closing image is strongly detailed as there is no turning back from what’s next.

The fate of the future lies in the past with a solid start to the end of Mutantkind’s days. With layered writing backed up by spectacular visuals, Xavier leads a desperate attempt to save the world. Will the ends justify the means?
