In the West Village, A mysterious figure is preparing himself in the shadows. He is talking with an associate about plans since he is now out of jail. The figure alludes to jumping right into the Gang War. The sights are set on Tombstone and Beetle. Readers see when he steps into the light, he is The Rose! With his forces ready, the journey to the Beetle is made.

Meanwhile in the Meatpacking District, the Track Suit Mafia and Inner Demons are set to face off in a warehouse. Before the suits make a move, an imposing figure makes his way into the crowd. Tombstone is there and he didn’t come alone. Spider-Man and She-Hulk are along for the ride. The uneasy trio defeat the mafia while the demons took off.

lurking in the shadows of downtown is Madame Masque. Considering her actions started the war, readers witness her next play. How does this move affect the war? What is the Beetle up to during all of this? How long can the uneasy trio work together?

All questions are revealed as the war rages on in the heart of the Big Apple. Statements are made. Actions have consequences. However, no bigger move is made than the final image. Readers will need to brace for impact as a major player has enter the deadly game. Suffice to say, the final image is going to have fans talking.

Wells juggles many character with this latest issue, but keeps the theme centered around one especially. Tombstone’s play keeps readers engaged whenever he is on page. The uneasy alliance with the heroes pours with tension and mistrust. yet, Wells’s grouping makes for some strong dynamics with conversation. Tombstone’s view of events speaks volumes to the overall gravity of the situation. With his presences and the debuting player, the storyline looks to be re-igniting a new flame for readers.

Romita, Hanna and Menyz give slow builds for each main player throughout the issue. The Rose makes the dramatic debut with a full page panel. The same goes for the Beetle as her storyline takes flight with a strong full page image as well. “The Uneasy Alliance” kicks events off with great action panels. Seeing the “Fastball Special” used should get old-school fans excited!

The art builds up the tension with the parallel characters heading into the final act. Readers will be shocked who finally makes their appearance in the final pages. An incredible two-page full spread brings a close to this round, but lights the match for an eventual combustible confrontation later on. Readers should have much to say about this latest chapter.

The lastest chapter of “Gang War” brings forth a game-changing character to an already explosive saga. Wells paces the multiple storylines with solid writing. Romita and the art team craft some excellent visuals in the backdrops to show readers things have only just begun. You’ll want to keep your eye out for this issue on New Comic Book Day!

MASTERPIECE #1 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

For this entry, we are checking out a brand new series from a legendary creative team. When fans see the names “Bendis” and “Maleev” in the same creators listing, most instantly think of their run on Marvel’s Daredevil. Others may think Scarlet. This time, they’re reuniting for a brand new crime mystery series for Dark Horse Comics.

MASTERPIECE #1 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, Ian Herring and Josh Reed welcomes readers to the mystery of Emma and the debt of her family’s sins. Let’s take a closer look and see how this story begins.

A teacher introduces Emma to fellow students in her new classroom. The moment is awkward as Emma’s speech doesn’t exactly connect. Making things even worse is the FBI crashing the welcome party. They’re looking for a “Masterpiece Lawford”. Emma is very confused as to what is happening. Emma is led away into a car with her next stop an unknown location.

After having her mask removed, Emma is in the presence of Zero Preston. Preston is a billionaire who surprises not only Emma but readers with his knowledge. Preston knows Emma is not her real name. Preston also explains how her parents stole money from him and disappeared without a trace. The grudge has grown over time leading to this moment.

Readers witness the master plan Preston has for Emma. It is a risky gamble, but with all the anger fueling him, Preston is locked in. Emma starts to try figuring out what is happening as she now faces a real problem. The fallout from this leads into a new direction.

The closing moments add danger and anxiety to the young 16 year old’s path of discovery. Rest assured by the final page, Emma’s world as she knew it becomes forever changed. Get ready for a story that fits its’ title billing.

Bendis crafts a new vision in what we define “criminal” as. Emma is presented as an outsider to a world she knew nothing about. The dialogue with Preston is filled with themes of intrigue and wonder. His drive of “villainy” is an easy play for readers to see. The story behind her parents is a great surprise.

The latter half of the book dives further into the revelations bestowed onto Emma. The dynamic in seeing how she is processing all of this is keeps the audience locked in. Pacing never allows for this to get lost in the shuffle. Emma’s closing arc throws more mystery into the plot which peels more layers away to her new stat quo. It leaves much for readers to think about as they process what is sure to be the start of something truly special.

Maleev, Herring and Reed kick things ff with a frantic scene of Emma and the classroom. Once the FBI makes their appearance, the art team captures the fast moving moments with excellent usage of the word bubbles to match her reactions of doubt.

Readers are gifted a fantastic two-page image with a further dive into Emma’s parents history. It has a vintage feel like the Jim Steranko covers of Nick Fury to hook readers into their history. The “Unicorn Pow” images provide a solid break to the tone of the book. However, the closing moment ramps up some action and mystique before bowing out the story (for now).

The team of Bendis and Maleev strike another huge score with their latest mystery crime tale. Through fantastic writing and impressive imagery, the saga of Emma Lawford lives up to its’ apply titled name. The sins of the family come to light with an issue you can’t afford to miss at the local comic shop!

SPIDER-GWEN: SMASH #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, we are checking out the adventures of one of the Spider-verse’s most popular characters. Since impacting pop culture audiences in the smash Spider-Man Spider-verse animated films, Gwen Stacy from Earth-65 has become one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes. Now poised to take the lead in an all-new adventure, fans have much to be excited about.

On Earth 65, people are running out of “Freak Out”, an establishment that is hosting a certain band for the night. The group? The Mary-Janes! As Em Jay tries calming the crowd, the cause for the disruption appears to be Spider-Gwen aka Ghost-Spider!

Readers see a quick flashback to moments prior. While playing drums on stage, Gwen Stacy notices an approaching threat coming near the stage. Pink Velvet is making her way through the crowd. She’s addressing her social followers and touting about her super-villainy. Gwen’s sensing danger as she gets close to Em Jay.

Before she can strike, Pink Velvet is taken down by Ghost-Spider! However, the fallout works in Velvet’s favor. Being an “influencer”, Velvet speaks as she was the victim and paints the picture this is all Gwen’s fault. After a heart to heart with her dad, Gwen is called away to meet with the band.

Once she arrives, Gwen sees an offer of a lifetime. The Mary Janes have been asked to open for DAZZLER and the UNCUT GEMS for their tour!

Readers see how an offer of a lifetime has much more than meets the eye behind it. What could be the meaning behind their addition to the tour? The story cranks up the volume as Gwen and company get their information. They also get a party crasher fans won’t see coming. While still processing this, fans are left with a solid last song (or in this case image) until the next tour date.

Flores unveils a very fun and engaging story for readers right from the opening pages. Gwen is presented as an unlucky soul searching for something. The life of Ghost-Spider isn’t perfect and the clashes with Em Jay work to slowly build the drama. The moments with her father are brief but reinforce the drive to find her happiness through her musical responsibilities.

The story begins to take things up a few levels once Dazzler and her associates appear. Flores puts a few great twists on some classic characters, giving readers a fresh perspective. One in particular will catch some off guard, but that plays into the enjoyable aspect of what is being presented here. This all leads into the final act where more layers of the tale begin to peel back and show there’s more to the latest saga than just rock and roll.

Balam, D’Amico and Sifuentes keep things energetic as the music begins to play. Readers don’t have to wait too long to see Gwen in action. The scuffle with Pink Velvet is brief but gives readers a few noteworthy panels featuring Gwen in action. The moments with her dad rewind the tension and allow Gwen to have some character moments. This caps off with a fun train sequence meeting up with The Mary Janes.

The introduction of Dazzler and company makes an impression with a near full page panel. The art spotlights the mutant rockstar with some noteworthy concert visuals before ramping up the drama into the latter half of the book. The reimagined characters are featured well into the overall picture. Their spotlight is stolen by the antagonist, who leaves readers with great action sequences. This all leads to an excellent closing page before bowing out until next time.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #4 (DC COMICS)

Since its debut from DC Comics, the Dynamic Duo has been repairing its’ fractured bond while giving readers an amazing story to follow. Now, things escalate to a fever pitch as the case looks like it’s about to break wide open!

With most of the Bat Family exiled away after the events of “The Gotham War,” Bruce Wayne has taken his fight against crime to a new location. No longer at Wayne Manor, Batman has set up shop inside a brownstone. With his back-up personality still lingering after the effects of “Knight Terrors”, the Dark Knight continues his quest for Justice. Along for the ride is his teenaged son, Damien. Their relationship has been strained over the past few months. Their latest case might be the catalyst to heal their wounds.

While investigating an attempted kidnapping on Dr. Kafira, Batman was attacked by Bats! The alleged culprit behind the attack was Shush. Readers quickly foud out that she wasn’t the main boss. That honor belongs to an old friend: Kirk Langstrom aka MAN-BAT!

This issue begins with a flashback to Damian’s training with the League of Assassins. His trainer, Mistress Harsh, pushed his skill to the limit with an unorthodox test. When she deems he failed, Harsh hits Damian. Unknown to her, Talia Al Ghoul walks in and doesn’t appear to be happy. The outcome is one readers will have an inkling of happing but to what extend?

As the story jumps to the present, Man-Bat is addressing a defiant and restrained Robin. With Shush in the room , Damian holds his own with the banter with the bad guys. It’s enough to almost give Batman an easy route for the heroics. Man-Bat senses him and says to join the party. Batman obliges and onward goes the excitement.

How does the encounter go with Man-Bat? From this stage, the drama picks up as the duo now knows who their opposition truly is. The fallout delivers on giving some key notes as to how the father and son deal with the knowledge. This all rises right into the few ending pages. Once readers get to the end, there’s one bit of news that should generate some buzz heading into the next chapter. It’s another great piece of the winning formula of this series.

Williamson gives readers a strong payoff to the latest caper without doing a full reveal. The metamorphosis of Langston works to further the drama along. It also adds a new layer to the storied history of the enemies. Speaking of storied history, the strength of this series has been the bond between Father and Son.

Williamson’s writing spotlights Bruce and Damien's road back from estrangement. The flashback sequences show Damien’s past in a darker place in comparison to where he is now. The stark difference is seen in a few moments where the pair happily bond in their pursuit of the case. The ending moments solidify their bond while leaving readers with a great closing footnote until next issue.

The art duties are spilt this issue between Di Meo and Janin. With Damian’s initial flashback sequence, Janin sets up Damian’s brashness with solid action behind it. Batman gets his fair share with a near full page panel that shifts gears in the story direction. Janin also delivers an epic two page image of the Dynamic Duo in happier times that is sure to please fans.

Di Meo comes crashing in with his own two-page full splash page bringing Batman crashing into the story. The imagery is fast placed. This gives this Bat book a certain feel to it that drives the building drama with each page. This issue has a great 1-2 punch with the art leading into a great closing panel to cap events off with. It’s always a highlight reading this series.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The latest case for Bruce and Damian Wayne closes in one aspect but opens a surprise one with this latest issue. Williamson’s strong writing balances the family and crime-fighting while the dual art threat of Di Meo and Janin gives readers a wonderful trip through the vivid imagery. Make sure you have this series on your pull lists at the local comic shop!

OUTSIDERS #2 (DC Comics)

OUTSIDERS #2 by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Robert Carey, Valentina Taddeo and Tom Napolitano (DC COMICS) brings forth a new expedition into the hidden world of DC Comics. Let’s follow along as the trio takes another plunge into mystery!

The story begins with the trio conversing in their offices in London, England. Kate Kane takes the lead and starts describing an experience she had while at West Point. Kane breaks down an expedition to the Enlil triangle, investigating a unique storm. While out at sea, a creature emerged and took out the fleet researching the area for rescue.

Kane tries selling the point of investigating the creature and the storm. Knowing the area has been a mystery for 25 years, Kane feels this is Outsiders business 101. However, the rest of the team shown some hesitance. After some deliberation, the group heads into the Enlil Island Chain to unlock the secret of the storm.

Once they arrive, they come across something that readers won’t see coming. Blocking their path of discovery is a long-standing DC Comics team that knows a thing or two about “Challenging Unknown” obstacles. The Outsiders cross paths with the new CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN!

What happens when the two units are in search of the same answers? Readers find out fast that the Challengers are not the same group they remember. The new dynamic plays into an unforeseen hurdle on the search for the truth. The drama heightens as the search goes further into the sea. The resolution leaves much to ponder as the ending presents a new thought. The final moment closes out the story on a solid note, while giving some inklings of where this team is heading as their story has just begun.

The HiveMind further play into the mysteries of the DCU by re-envisioning one of DC’s classic teams. The writing walks readers through their history just enough to sense their impact on the story. The breakout character thus far has to be Kate Kane. Seeing the tension building with conversation with Fox challenge how this tea can co-exist.

Meanwhile, the mission at hand showed various layers before drawing its’ conclusion. The personalities clash just enough to give readers a different sense of teamwork. This point is highlighted in the closing act. It gives its’ payoff to the brooding internal conflict and continues to move the latest chapter forward. The closing moments leave readers on an optimistic note as the writing reflects the new team is still finding their footing. All the while, the writing juggles many points on the road to leave the readers well invested at this ambitious story.

Carey and Taddeo leaves readers with many different looks on this team’s latest quest. There is an excellent two page spread welcoming the creature from Kate’s past into the current story. The conversation panels show Kane’s frustration in getting the team invested in her. This does taper off once the rival characters make thier appearance.

The Challengers make a grand entrance with a stand-out fill page panel. Their introduction panels are presented in an easy-to-follow style which makes an easy transition once the drama begins to ramp up. The closing image will give readers pause to what’s next. It’s a great full page parting shot mirroring the prime driver of a solid driven story.

The latest challenge for DC’s newest super-team displays an emotional driven tale. The HiveMind balance the drama and excitement with fantastic writing. Carey, Taddeo and Napolitano construct huge moments with driven reactions to continue making this a book not to be missed on New Comic Book Day.

TITANS: BEAST WORLD #2 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter in DC Comics’ huge crossover event: BEAST WORLD. With the Tians stepping into the role of the premier superhero team, they have been tested like never before. What happens when one of their own becomes the problem behind a global catastrophe? Nightwing and company are finding out first hand.

TITANS: BEAST WORLD #2 by Tom Taylor, Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, Brad Anderson, and Wes Abbott continues the chaos as the heroes scramble to stop it. Let’s take a closer look and see how things are going now.

When the Necrostar is released from its’ planet prison via Brother Eternity, the Titans lead the charge to stop the oncoming threat. Beast Boy takes a huge gamble and makes himself into the one being that might be capable of stopping the threat. He turns himself into a Starro.

After the space altercation, an unforeseen presence makes their move. Amanda Waller has sent Doctor Hate to intervene. Beast Boy is now infected and attacking the earth with spore-like creature. The people of Earth are transforming into beast of their own.

The story picks up with Cyborg and Raven floating in space. Both are reeling from the initial encounter of the Necrostar. As they start gathering their surroundings, they see a number of the DC Universe’s most powerful heroes trying to stop Beast Boy’s attack.

Meanwhile back on Earth, ANIMAL MAN is being overwhelmed by the surge of animal-humans taking over. In Bludhaven, Nightwing and Batman are doing all they can to help the innocent survive the ordeal. When a young boy becomes trapped in a car, Batman flies in for the save. During the rescue, Batman is wounded via a bite that nearly rips his arm off.

Nightwing swoops in for help but the next moments switch everything on its’ axis. What transpires pushes Dick Grayson to his limits. In the process, he (along with readers) find more clues about the spread of the animal infection. Will it be enough to turn the tide or will another force factor in to delay their cause? If the final image is any indication, the battle has only just begun for the heroes of the DC Universe.

Taylor keep things centered around the face of the Titans for this chapter. The struggle Nightwing shows to the conflict shows many sides. Not only is the world around him becoming unglued, but he is forced to confront a threat he never wants to face. The moments before that fight occurs, Taylor shows Grayson’s fears pouring out as he knows what is coming. The emotional gut-punches with Batman and Nightwing play into how readers can sense the conflict is weighing on them.

The other main characters of the story gets their times to shine. None Moreso than the main culprit behind the escalation of events. With a power struggle looming behind the scenes of a global crisis, Taylor paces each level out to keep a fair balance of drama and action.

Reis, Miki, Anderson and Abbott bring stunning visuals to this issue. The full page image of the DCU heroes fighting Gar-Starro makes an immediate statement. The more low-key moments center around Batman and Nightwing. The reaction Batman gives the young boy after a question is asked shows a different side to the Dark Knight.

This leads into some fantastic action, building towards a monstrous full page image that amplifies events. Mixed with other heroes emotions, the closing panels cap off the feeling that the tide might start turning or be lost forever. There is much to enjoy with the art displayed here.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #39 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are on the battlelines of NYC as war has erupted via Marvel Entertainment. With a power vacuum of the criminal underworld now open, every crime boss is making a play for the throne. Standing in their way is a friendly neighborhood SPIDER-MAN. The question now remains: Is he going to be enough to stop the war or has the city already been lost?

The story begins six hours after the first strike was taken in the Gang War. The Streets are on fire. The residents are in the crossfire. A couple is trying to run away from the violence. Unfortunately, they run into a figure trying to stake is claim in the battle. He is the Ringmaster, from the Circus of Crime.

The couple gets hypnotized into joining the battle. Ringmaster leads their charge as the opposition comes from Crime-Master and A.I.M. With the conflict spiraling out of control, time is not an ally. There is an invested group watching over the rooftops. Their arrival is not a moment too soon.

Peter Parker has recruited some allies to save NYC. She-Hulk, Daredevil (Elektra), Spider-Woman and Miles Morales are waiting to strike. With innocent residents used as soldiers, Spidey and company know that extra care is needed. Once A.I.M. sends in a tank, the time for waiting is over.

The action revs up as the heroes enter the war. Readers see how the initial counter fares. It sets a pace for where things unfold from here. However, there are more figures making their presence known in this claim for the throne. None will be bigger than a return of one prominent player who could be the game-changer through all of this. If anyone isn’t sure about the magnitude of said character, just wait for the final page to send readers into the next chapter.

Wells kicks off the first round of actin with a solid entry. Right form the start, seeing how badly New York City is faring makes a big statement. The use of civilians as soldiers shows the desperation and disregard Ringmaster has to stake his claim for territory. Readers are treated to great Spidey action as his team of allies make a big debut.

The break-off adventure later with him and She-Hulk is another stand-out moment. The banter is fun and provides a relief from the drama unfolding. The sub-plot with the crime bosses amplifies with a great return. Throwing in a wild-card to the mix, Wells creates a few uneasy alliances which should have a big payoff later. The issue ends on a great note to move things forward as desperate times call for desperate measures.

Romita JR and Hanna bring excellent storytelling to the pages of this chapter. Fans are greeted to a huge two-page full spread showing the conflict between Crime-Master and Ringmaster. This is matched with another two-page spread announcing the heroes’ arrival to the conflict. The art captures the impact of the returning character to raise up the writing. Seeing the frustration and anxiousness this character creates solidifies the importance of what they’re bringing. The final pages reflect that, even with sneaking in a quip on the way out.

The saga begins with flashbacks of The Winter Soldier’s (Bucky Barnes) latest escapades. The events range from stops in Berlin, Madripoor, to now Lake Como. Each telling a different story. The narration leads to a familiar face bracing for trouble. The target in Bucky’s path: The Contessa Valentina Allegra De Fontaine!

Coming off the heels of The Century Game in the pages of Captain America, Val thinks Bucky has a grudge to settle. Readers see it’s quite the contrary. Bucky is approaching Val with an offer of partnership. Using Val’s OXE group in a pro-active manner, Bucky sells his point of taking out a target that is long overdue to be eliminated. Val agrees after Bucky leaves a legendary quote “This is Justice…like Lightning”.

The story shifts to Argentina. There is a group of Nazi soldiers setting up camp, ravaging the environment. Readers see that a figure has crashed their plans. It is none other than The Destroyer (Sharon Carter)! Wasting little time, Sharon wipes out their entire operation. Waiting in the wings are Bucky and Val, who tipped off the location.

The trio starts walking towards an undisclosed location. Bucky conveys this groups’ message about dealing with a threat long overdue to be eliminated. Defying international regulation and law, Bucky spells out the mission loud and clear: THE RED SKULL DIES TONIGHT!

Can this trio do the impossible? The story shifts gears into a full throttle assault on the Skull’s compound. With the stakes getting higher, another member makes a huge splash into the mission. Readers see the danger getting more intense with each page. What unfold becomes the spark for a bigger explosion as Bucky and company don’t back down. If the final moments are any indication, Marvel has a monster hit on their hands and it’s only getting started!

Talk about making a first impression! The Hivemind present readers with an engaging plot for this Thunderbolts squad. Being a “pro-active” unit and aiming high with its’ first target makes a bold statement to readers. Seeing Bucky taking charge and forming the uneasy alliance with the Contessa added a different dynamic to his character.

Coming out of the Captain America story, Bucky is obsessively driven to his new cause. Once they enter the compound, the writers keep the emotions high as Bucky and company move forward. The closing act brings everything to a thunderous close. The ending page leads readers to high expectations as this unit has only begun to fight and that’s a win for all comic readers.

GERALDO BORGES STIKES AGAIN! Borges is one of the best artists for action in all of comics. Teamed with Helsi, the art team doesn’t stall to build up the story. After building the initial tense partnership with Bucky ad Val, Borges welcomes in Sharon Carter with a full page splash before showcasing her skills at work. The two-page piece is energetic and immediately sets the pace for the mission lying ahead.

Speaking of the mission, Borges keeps readers engaged with how each member faces off against their challengers. This is followed up by another excellent two-page spread that sets the stage for a bigger threat waiting for the heroes. After another impactful debut, Borges raises the excitement even further heading towards the end of the issue. The mission is capped off by a perfect full page shot that is pure Hollywood cinema. The closing panels leave readers wanting more but that’s how you know you have an excellent story in hand.

For this entry, we are witnessing the return (?) of one of Marvel Entertainment’s most polarizing characters. Bob Reynolds’ history in the MCU has been one shrouded in mystery. As one of the most powerful being, The Sentry has been been perceived as a complex individual.

Since being killed by Knull in the “King In Black” storyline, many had wondered if that was the last time readers would see the Golden Guardian. When unexplained events happen in present day, it appears we may have gotten our answer.

The story begins with a familiar face working on her office. Jessica Jones is face-timing her husband while fixing her door. Luke Cage is now the mayor of New York City. The couple takes a small break from their respective tasks to catch up. Their conversation is cut short as Jones’ building starts to shake. Jones goes to investigate, since she can sneak by Wilson Fisk’s law banning vigilanties in NYC.

When Jones arrives at a building a few blocks away, she is shocked at what she finds. A whole side of an apartment complex is destroyed. Before she can dig further, Misty Knight and the Abberant Crime Division arrive to take over the case.

The tenants describe what they saw. Readers get the idea of a powerful energy blast destroying the building. This is on top of what appears to be someone saving the residents. Knight and Jones team-up to investigate. Their findings lead to the idea that The Sentry is back.

Who are Mallory Gibbs and Ryan Topper? What are their connection to Bob Reynolds? The mystery takes pause to soak in the information as it appears the dangerous hero might be back from beyond the grave. Readers witness what led to the incident in New York while learning this isn’t isolated. Prepare for an interesting tale that brings forth many questions and possibilities as to the Golden Guardian’s return to prominence in the Marvel Universe.

Loo crafts a solid mystery for fans to try solving with in this inaugural chapter. Seeing the story through Jones and Knight made for a different and successful approach. Knowing what the Sentry is capable of, Knight presses the issue of solving what she fears has happened. This causes pressure between her and Jones but makes for a combustible dynamic.

The story of Gibbs and Topper further dives the story into chaos. Each has their own moments to feature the impact of powers. It sets events in motion for another key battle soon. In the meantime, Loo makes an easy connection to readers for Gibbs. Through her own experiences, Gibbs becomes a character you want to root for as this series enters into dangerous ground.

Zagaria and Helsi balance out the emotions form this story with fear and excitement of the possibility of the Sentry’s return. The return of the hero picks up after Jones’s call with a big two-page spread of a destroyed building. Post that event, the art team processes the background of Gibbs as she makes her way through the hustle from NYC.

The rest of the issue dives further into the legacy of the Suitor. The art team presents one candidate in over their heads. Tying events back to the famous words of Ben Parker, the art makes no mistake spotlighting what goes wrong when power corrupts. The closing moments address one key factor of this story and sets up for a bigger conflict down the road.

Bob Reynolds is dead, Long live Bob Reynolds. The next chapter of the legacy of the Sentry begins with a striking return. Loo’s slow-building plot along with Zagaria’s stunning visuals allows ample time for the audience to connect to the events plying out. The mystery is only just beginning and this will be one not to miss on New Comic Book Day.

Jake Levin thought his long-time friend Chaim Davidovits, was helping him out when Chaim offered him a job writing promotions for his kosher appetizing stores. However, as the saying goes, if its too good to be true, it is.

One night, Jake went back to the office for his cell phone. When he walked in, he became an accessory to murder! At this moment, Jake became entangled in Chaim’s organized crime business. Making matters worse is Lenny Klein. Klein is another childhood friend who now is working with the FBI to take down the business at Chaim’s shops. Where does Jake go from here?

This issue begins with Shloime Garbstein, Chaim’s mashgiach (one who oversees the Kashruth condition of food in a restaurant), and associates going through stolen property and money laundered. Jake is shown as going through the books and making sure the “Avodah” (work). Readers see how this isn’t something that jak had even planned to happen. They also start seeing the slow seduction of wealth beginning in Jake.

This is a far cry from a previous chat with Jake and Lenny. Lenny lays out his plan to go after Netanel Stern (business associate of Chaim). With Jake’s head spinning, readers see how further divided he has become with his childhood friends.

How does he react when he sees Chaim after this? The next sop at the shop leads Jake into an assignment he might not be ready for. With tension filling the air, will Jake rise to the occasion or get crushed by its’ weight? Readers quickly see how Jake adapts to the world he’s now in but is he ready for what’s next? If the final page is any indication, Jake’s world just got even more complicated…

Kleid continues to put Jake through the rising challenges of his new world. Being an unlikely “gangster”, Kleid showcases Jake’s awkwardness to his fellow “teammates”.

Blending in the fear and anxiousness forces Jake into near breakdowns. Once he understands the assignment, Jake shifts gears into leaning a certain direction as Chaim plays more as a “devil on his shoulder” with what the life of crime can offer. The closing moments adds a huge factor into Jake’s life. It also adds a deeper cut into Jake’s life as he tries to stop his world from spinning further out of control.

Broglia and Wright teeter Jake’s reactions from surprise wonderment to growing anxiousness. This begins right after the full page panel of Shloime addressing not only his crew, but the audience with “I Believe In God”. After that moment, Jake tries fighting the appeal of his new stat-quo.

Once the assignment is completed, Jake and Chaim’s conversation proves to be reflective of the uncertainty of their business. This leads to a solid parting image further complicating things for the lead who’s in way over his head already.

BATMAN #140 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we are descending further into the fractured mind of DC Comics’ Dark Knight. Since his awakening from the events of “Knight Terrors”, Bruce Wayne hasn’t been himself. With his defense personality in control, BATMAN has become more dangerous. Now poised to face his greatest foe, can Bruce not only defeat the Clown Prince of Crime, but his own mind as well?

BATMAN #140 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Mike Hawthorne, Tomeu Morey, Ivan Plascencia and Clayton Cowles breaks the Bat even further with the next chapter of “Mind Bomb”. Let’s take a closer look at see how things are shaping up.

Zur-En-Arrh, the back-up personality of Bruce Wayne has taken over after the events of “Knight Terrors”. After causing damage with the rest of the Bat-Family, this version of Batman is flying solo. While investigating a murder of a toy company heir, Batman knows who the clues are pointing to: JOKER!

The investigation leads to a trap. Joker has attacked Batman on another personal level. Lucie Chesson, who trained Bruce on his way to becoming the Bat, is a pawn in Joker’s twisted game. However this time around, he’s not dealing with the same ol’ Bat. He’s dealing with Zur-En-Arrh, who sends Bruce back into his own mind. Once in his own mental prison, Batman is confronted by an army of Zur-En-Arrhs.

This issue kicks off with Joker elated to deal with Zur-En-Arrh. Their game of cat and Mouse is about to start. Meanwhile Batman is addressing the other personalities. They claim to be the multi-verse versions. At this stage, readers quickly see any chance for these conflicts ending peaceful being non-existant.

Both fights begin with no remorse shown in either. “Zur-Bat” is unrelenting on the violence he is dishing out on Joker. It is one of the most brutal displays that Batman has ever unleashed on any criminal. The same can be said for the battle inside Bruce’s mind. Overwhelmed by the odds, it appears Bruce Wayne is on borrowed time as a new Batman has outsmarted the world’ greatest detective.

Readers see how both fights pay out with two sides of the Bat fighting for control. With all the surrounding elements at play, there is no easy road to victory. The action intensifies with each panel. This all builds to a breaking point. Once that resolution starts unraveling, the closing moments prove that “Mind Bomb” is an appropriate title for this story. Expect to be blown away by the final image!

Zdarsky challenges the Caped Crusader on two fronts for this issue. The first is dealing with his own creations. The personalities of Zur-En-Arrh provides a distinct threat of what Batman can become. Seeing Bruce face them head on shows his own struggle to not lose control. Readers see what happens when he does as the battle with the Joker is brutal and unapologetic.

The writing reflects the blind obsession to serve justice. As Zur-En-Arrh deomstrates, there is a fine line from heroics and villainy. The pacing moves quickly to give both plot points ample time to hit with readers. Once the latter half of the book starts to take hold, Zdarsky throws in some amazing curves before ending on another solid cliffhanger. The uncertainty of where things are heading makes this a great Joker story. It’s also a huge win for the fans who see Batman’s greatest challenge being himself.

Jiménez and Morey bring the ferociousness of the violence out in each brutal panel of fighting. The opening salvo versus the Joker holds nothing back as Batman starts throwing punches. With each strike, readers can feel the remorseless anger behind the fists. These images only amplify louder as their fight escalates. It leads to a show-stopping moment which will leave reader speechless.

As for the mind battle, the many “cameos” are a great nod to the many versions of Batman. The “leader” of the personalities was a perfect choice. It led to more importance on when their final fight occurred. There was never a shortage on the intensity as each panel brought out the high stakes involved with the conflict. The mind resolution stands out for a subtle yet stand-out moment. This leads into the final moments which will leave readers with jaws dropped at the final full-page panel. Jiménez illustrated one hell of an issue within these pages.

The explosive mid-way point of “Mind Bomb” will absolutely blow readers away. Zdarsky exemplifies the power of the mind through his excellent writing. Jiménez and Morey leave nothing on the table as their superb imagery brings the violent rage of a vigilante up close and personal before throwing another dynamic in the mix on the parting image. This story is an absolute must-read.

Jack and his loyal dog Pepper are investigating a possible lead in Mackenzie Cheng’s murder. As they’re walking by a riverbank, Jack hears a song. Readers quickly see this is a distraction. A creature emerges from the water and pulls Jack down.

While under water, Jack is trying to fight back. As two figures look to reach for him, Jack goes on the offensive. When he emerges, Jack finds himself in a mysterious place. A person of interest is asking him questions of what he was doing near the water so late. Readers follow along with Jack as he now finds himself in the heart of the Star tribe compound.

Meeting with Coochie Poo, Jack evades and asks questions concerning the tribe’s possible involvement with Cheng’s death. The talk leads Jack into a new direction but its’ not one that he might be ready to handle.

The path to the truth sends Jack into uncharted territory. Will Jack crack the case or is this the start of a bigger conspiracy? The closing act is a mix of emotions as Jack’s search for truth takes him on a path to dealing with his own issues. Once the final image hits the page, readers are served another reminder of why this book stands out on every NCBD.

The writing sets up a unique path for justice concerning Jack. the interaction with the Star Tribe comes off as unpredictable and off-beat as one might expect. Jack’s newfound role as redeeming hero plays out with a solid does of humor and heroics. Jack is flawed (putting it mildly). These elements shine as he progresses on his investigation.

The writing throws in some excellently timed moments that exemplify the awkwardness of Crossjack. Once the latter portion of the issue begins, readers see how Jack deals with his challenges but still tries coping with his past. Even with his set-backs, the writing never looses sight of trying to redeem Jack even if he might never be able to handle that moment.

The art sets a strong tone early. Opening the investigation of the Star Tribe, there is a great full page visual of Jack getting taken into deep water. The panels with Coochie Poo demonstrate the humor and anxiousness of Jack’s heroic plan. However, nothing will prepare readers for the walk home from their camp.

The “mind-bending” sequence of events plays into a more light-hearted feel to the seriousness of Jack’s mission. Readers will need to do a double take followed by a good laugh when the “text messages” start. The emotions start pouring out as Jack gets closer to a solid lead & its’ effect on Inga. The art mirrors the grief and anger involved with the case at hand. This builds towards a closing visual that sums up Jack’s struggles involving what is happening around him. Another great job showcasing the road to redemption isn’t always an easy path to walk.

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new series debuting from DSTLRY! Over the summer of 2023, “The Devil’s Cut” gave readers an insight of what to expect from the upstart line. With some of the best creators in the business involved, it was a huge win with fans.

Since that point, the anticipation for more content from this line has been building. Recently, Gone #1 by Jock was released. Now, another entry from this imprint is hitting the shops with a great buzz behind it. Considering its’ creative team, there’s no doubt why fans are excited to check this series out.

SOMNA #1 by Tula Lotay, Becky Cloonan, Lee Loughridge, Dee Cunniffe and Lucas Gattoni brings an erotic horror element to the local comic shops with this series. Let’s take a closer look and see how this debut fares.

A woman named Ingrid is walking through a forest landscape. The narration leads readers to believe it is a dream. She is wakes up after being enamored to a cold reality. However, it appears that the dream might not be done as a figure lurks trying to connect with her on a physical and sexual manner.

Suddenly, Ingrid wakes up to her husband Roland, a bailiff, who’s trying to have her accompany him to a trial. Ingrid doesn’t want to go and this causes Roland to storm off. In response, Ingrid heads into the forest and looks overhead at her village with a roaring fire. It is no ordinary fire. It appears to be where witches were burnt at the stake.

The fire snaps her back into the dream-like world. Ingrid sees herself as the one in the fire. She’s snapped back to the present by Maja and her son. The conversation shifts to who was being punished.

Later that evening, Ingrid sits by a fire as Roland returns. As she tries to initiate passion, he scoffs it away. As they sleep, the mysterious stranger reappears in her dreams, connecting with her on a level Roland cannot. When she wakes, Roland is not as understanding to what she is describing.

How does Ingrid process her dreams? After the recent trial and reactions from the village, her thoughts wander. As her dreams intensify, Ingrid becomes entrapped between two worlds. As the closing act approaches, readers see where Ingrid leads to as an event occurs that sets her on an unforeseen path. The journey now begins that will have readers locked in until the next chapter drops.

The writing breaks down Ingrid into multiple stories. The first is the gruff relationship with Roland. The mood is tense and cold as their interactions lead to mounting tension with little middle ground. Ingrid comes across as a character yearning for more, which drives her to lean into her dreamscape.

Her path leads to the question of “Is perception really reality” as Ingrid walks a fine line throughout this issue. Knowing there’s a hint of danger in her dreams, the writing reflects her wanting more than she has and how scary that could be. As the story rolls into its’ closing portion, readers see how Ingrid inches closer to the edge. After the event transpires, there is a sense of looming fear of that should transpire next which leaves a lasting impression.

The art duties are split into two distinct areas. Cloonan handles the present time, featuring the interactions with the village. The mood is that of trepidation as the burning trial lingers on Ingrid’s mind. The body language of Ingrid and Roland shows disfunction and frustration on all parities.

This only adds to the significance of the dreamscape. Lotay paints a vivid landscape of wonder and anxiousness as Ingrid’s interactions with the figure intensify with each page. The art captures the raw emotions of the encounters bringing readers along to sense what Ingrid wants and sense her fear in the consequences. It all ties together with a striking final vision leading to more thrilling drama yet to be seen.

Cloonan and Lotay welcome readers into the complex world of Ingrid with a visually impressive debut. Ingrid’s haunting dreams battle the harsh reality of her world with excellent art and writing. The layers of this mystery are just being peeled back so readers won’t want to miss jumping on-board now to see where things lead from here.

STAR WARS: VISIONS - PEACH MOMOKO #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we are checking out an imaginative tale told in a galaxy far, far away courtesy of Marvel Comics! Since its’ debut on Disney Plus in September of 2021, Star Wars: Visions has given fans new perspectives and creativity in storytelling. Allowing diverse creators to bring unique approaches to the mythos has been nothing but a success. With two critically praised series, it has breathed new life into an already successful franchise.

Along with the animated series, the brand has made the transition to comic form with Star Wars: Visions by Takashi Okazaki in 2022. The brand is now returning with an all new story with one of the biggest and innovative creators at the helm.

STAR WARS: VISIONS - PEACH MOMOKO #1 by the one and only PEACH MOMOKO (Ultimate X-Men, Demon Days) dives into the world of the Sith in an unforgettable story. Let’s not wait any longer and take a closer look.

The issue begins with a great introduction page explaining the major players of Kako (a “rebel” to Ankok and Sith descendant), Popo (a resident in Ankok’s territory), Gel (Kako’s android partner) and Tata (An Ankok advocate).

In the wake of a Sith Lord’s demise, a cult has risen with hopes of a new era centered around Ankok. As the followers have grown, some question the true intentions of the powerful figure.

The story begins with mysterious followers draped in red walking towards a guarded compound. Inside a figure is sitting on a throne at the top of the altar of worship. Once the red sun aligns itself through the compound opening, it shifts colors to black. Readers see how this fuels the figure sitting on their throne. This figure is Ankok.

With Tata serving as a guide, Ankok’s influence generates into her followers. Two in the crowd look with disbelief as the rest of the crowd disperses. They are Kako and Gel. as they head into town, the pair comes across Popo. The interaction is brief but leads Popo to follow the pair. Once on the outskirts of town, readers see a moment with Kako that sets in motion a plan to expose Ankok’s truths once and for all.

How does the gamble pay off? The moments following show a test of will as Kako takes the plan right to Ankok’s altar. The action picks up as the struggle becomes overwhelming. The outcome is sure to leave fans on the edge of their seats. This all builds towards a final image that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Momoko brings a vivid and unforgettable tale to life within these pages. From the initial stages, Ankok is menacing and intimidating right from the full page panel.

The followers’ rection to seeing this “god” is frightening of the power she possesses on them. This plays in contrast to Kako, who’s ever defiant of believing in what she is claiming.

The turning point in the story is the quiet moment involving Kako. Momoko gives enough insight to the readers without fully tipping her hand to what’s next. The final confrontation is set up perfectly will well-set pacing.

The visuals are breathtaking as the journey into the truth takes flight. Never does any panel lack the tension and excitement of the moments unfolding. Its’ conclusion will leave readers with many emotions but all will leave readers very pleased for this experience.

G.I. JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO #301 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the grand return of a legendary comic. Throughout the course of history, the G.I. Joe franchise has been one of the most popular in pop culture. From live action movies to the classic animated series to unforgettable toys, the brand has made its’ mark with fans for decades. One of the biggest win has been its’ comic book runs.

Since the 1940’s, there has been a connection between G.I. Joe and comics. However, if you talk to most comic fans these days, their first real memories were based in the 1980’s with the run via Marvel Comics.

With an impressive 155 issue run under the voice of Larry Hama, the series left a lasting footprint with fans. The rights had moved to a few different publishers since the series wrapped at Marvel in 1994. Last readers saw, issue #300 hit shelves in November 2022.

Fast forward to the summer of 2023 and little did fans know that spinning out of Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics’ VOID RIVALS would be the birth of the Energon Universe! The new landscape would be the home for both G.I. Joe and Transformers! With fans buzzing about what is coming, Skybound is bringing back the flagship book in a monster way with the voice of G.I. Joe leading the way once again!

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #301 by Larry Hama, Chris Mooneyham, Francesco Segala and Pat Brosseau picks up where things left off for the Real American Heroes! Let’s take a closer look to see how this return fares!

The issue opens up with a fantastic “who’s Who” recap of the history of G.I. Joe. Readers get a quick glimpse into G.I. Joe and Cobra and some of the key players involved. (Editor note: This is brilliant and I wish more companies did this with series)!

The main story begins with Duke and Wild Bill flying over Cobra Island. With a damaged plane, they’re trying to salvage the flight, not to mention the precious cargo of a Joe team on-board.

On the ground level, Dr. Mind-bender and Serpentor Khan (COBRA notables) have activated the Mutant Virus Bomb. Preferring this method to defeat the Joes instead of surrender, time is now a factor for the good guys. Outside of Mind-bender’s lair is another Joe squad led by Snake-eyes and Scarlett ready to go.

With the bomb activated, who will survive? The tension races as Cutter tries evacuating the team on the ground. With one note-worthy figure on-board the ship escaping, an event happens proving how dangerous and deadly this conflict is between GI Joe and Cobra.

Once the smoke clears, readers see how this series is a far cry from the cartoons and toys. THIS is vintage GI Joe comics. The aftermath will leave a lasting impression that you can’t help but want to make sure you don’t miss another issue of what is going to be another incredible run in the legacy of G.I. Joe stories.

In case anyone is diving in for the first time, Hama picks up right where he’s left off involving his story-telling. There is a reason he is synonymous with this franchise. Hama establishes the high stakes right off the bat and never lets up. His dialogue between Serpentor and Mind-Bender illustrates how unhinged Serpentor is and how far he’s willing to go to win.

On the flip side, no one brings out the voices of the Joes better. Duke and Will Bill’s story keeps escalating until it hits the perfect timing and mark. The escape from the island has its’ drama and one moment sparks a bigger match to explode later in this new series. The resolution of the bomb kickstarts a few avenues for the team to venture down in future issues. This is a great re-introduction issue for older fans and a solid jump-on for new readers wanting to find out about the hype.

Mooneyham adds a gritty style to the Joe imagery for this issue. It gels perfectly with Hama’s dialogue. The intro pages are an easy win with readers. Once they conclude, the art speeds events up quickly to layer the dangers of what Cobra is doing. This all leads to an excellent full page image of the teams trying to escape.

The one major moment of the escape comes across to readers as a huge deal, even if they’re not familiar with everyone involved. Its’ following sequences show a variety of reactions. The panels construct the foundation for a lasting image to close this chapter out with. There is so much to compliment with the art for this return issue.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

The return of the long-running fandom doesn’t miss staking its claim as a must-read series. With Hama’s legendary writing backed by Mooneyham’s superb visuals, the saga of G.I. Joe strikes back to win over fans new and old alike. Don’t leave the comic shops without this in your possession!

GEIGER: GROUND ZERO #1 (IMAGE COMICS VIA GHOST MACHINE)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the latest from a company who made a HUGE splash at NYCC this year! GHOST MACHINE, who’s roster of creators reads like an all-star lineup, is poised for a monster 2024 with a giant sized one-shot kicking off in January.

Luckily for fans, their wait isn’t so bad as one of the most notable Ghost Machine characters returns in a two part story that needs to be on fans’ radars at the shop.

GEIGER: GROUND ZERO #1 by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson and Rob Leigh spotlights the powerful force of nature in the Unnamed Universe. What secrets lie beneath the surface of the mysterious figure? Let’s take a deeper dive into this untold story, shall we?

Tariq Geiger is a survivor of a nuclear bombing that has transformed him into a walking weapon. While keeping his family inside a bunker, Geiger was caught outside when the bomb exploded. Unknown how he lived, Geiger has become a figure of legend.

When an overload exposed the bunker to be housing corpses of his family, Geiger unleashed his rage and set off on a loner’s path. Geiger became a surprise caretaker of two children who crossed his path. After that journey came to its’ conclusion, readers knew that the story was only just beginning.

For this story, the time is six months after the bombing began. The military has set up camp at what appears to be an amusement park. A man is monologuing themes of guilt and concern for his wife and what he as done. Readers see that he is Dr. Molotov. Molotov might be the man behind the bombs that destroyed the country.

The unit is in pursuit of Geiger. In exchange for helping, Molotov will be reunited with his wife. Can he succeed in this mission?

The action is mixed with more details on Tariq’s life before the bomb. The flashbacks show a different side to the radioactive drifter that leaves a huge impact with fans. The closing act ramps up the drama before bowing out with a parting visual that raises more questions on the already enigmatic lead protagonist. There’s no way anyone will be able to pass on seeing where things go from here!

One element of Ghost Machine that still rings rue in this issue is the focus on “Characters First”. Johns dives into the compelling drama with Molotov’s guilt for what he caused. The drive to see his wife counters the negative weight he carries, keeping readers locked. in.

However, the biggest moments come via the flashback sequences with Gieger. The heart-breaking tale of life before the bomb will level readers with the emotional pull. The conversations with his family showcases the deep love and drive he has for them. With dealing with his Cancer battle, Johns handles the moments perfectly with the interactions of those that matter most. The love for his family is the main driver for his ultimate choice when the bombs start going off. This all combines for a great read that stands out for the characters first.

Frank’s art features the various emotions of the two lead characters in this story. Molotov’s reactions to the army unit and Geiger vary with a sobering feeling of what he’s caused. Geiger’s time with his family and neighbors range from happiness to patience with a unfriendly resident. The time with the family hit the deepest connection as the art reflects the deep rooted love they possess even with the surrounding factors in play.

Once the story shifts back to present time, Frank (with Anderson’s fantastic coloring) makes the Geiger confrontation jump. The full page panel featuring Geiger at his most dangerous sets a high bar for the following action. This all leads to a stunning closing image which sets the stage for more revelations to follow.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The early days of Ghost Machine’s radioactive powerhouse comes to light with a strong debut chapter into his past. Johns drives home superb character writing while Frank, Anderson and Leigh elevate the words with magnificent imagery capturing the moments at hand. There’s no way to can’t be caught up in the story unfolding here. Make sure to pick it up on NCBD!

OUTSIDERS #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we're checking out a debut issue from DC COMICS with quite the buzz behind it. With the “Dawn Of DC” movement, fans have been gifted returns of many of their favorite characters and teams. Making their re-introduction is a brand that ties back to the Dark Knight himself since their debut in 1983!

With an incredible creative team behind this latest incarnation, now is the perfect time for a new era of a group that doesn't fit any mold and stands on a playing field all their own.

OUTSIDERS #1 by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Robert Carey, Valentina Taddeo and Tom Napolitano brings readers a fresh take on the classic squad with some new ties to the Bat-Family! Let’s not delay any longer and dive in, shall we?

The story begins with Kate Kane aka Batwoman walking through the dangerous streets of Vahkar. With a journal entry of Amanda Waller narrating, Kane hears a noise and fires a batarang at a target. Readers see quickly, this is no ordinary target. The man who grabs the weapon in mid-air is none other than Luke Fox aka Batwing!

Fox approaches Kane, stopping her from the current mission at hand. Bringing up why she is miles away from Gotham, Fox gets an angry response from Kane. The conversation quickly shifts into a proposition from Fox. The deal: a new group whose sole intention is handling crisis before they happen. No jurisdiction, No reliance on others, No Batman.

After dealing with her first priorities, Kane accepts. The pair flies to Antarctica. Once they land, another member of the team greets them: The mysterious Drummer! What will this new unit discover?

Readers quickly find out there is many secrets below the ice that can have dire consequences. How does the trio fare? Readers get a fair mix of big suspense with heavy character driven points mixed in. The main theme of wonder becomes evident as there’s more to come with the most unknown corners of the DC universe set to be exposed.

There is no doubt of that once the last image is witnessed. It will leave a very notable impression on pat readers while getting new ones excited to see where things land now. Get ready for one hell of a ride as the landscape of the DC Universe is about to change forever!

Leave it to Lanzing and Kelly to hit readers with a deeper mystery at hand on top of an already impressive issue. The conversation and pairing of Kate Kane and Luke Fox steals this issue. Both coming out of the “Bat Family” tree and looking to make their own mark, the Hivemind sets up the duo for driving home the point of “this isn’t another Batman story”. There is just enough clues to see what’s happening but with how Luke speaks, there is more that he knows as things progress forward.

The addition of Drummer to the mix presents a nice wildcard to the “team.” Pacing moves very fast, building each moment up for a deeper blowout in conclusion. The resolution is a unique one but once again re-enforces Fox’s approach of this NOT being a super hero team. The closing moments plant a great easter egg before sending readers off with much to ponder. There are many directions things may lead to now, but rest assured, this will be one story not to miss.

Carey hits readers with some noteworthy reactions to Kane and Fox “negotiations”. The struggle of finding life post-Gotham is an easy message sent to the readers. The emotions pour for a bit before snapping back into Kane’s “normal” work. There’s a great full-page spread to introduce Drummer to readers that hits its’ mark. This is followed up by an impressive two-page image conveying what the trio is looking to explore.

The character moments run deep later in the story with a different way to approach the conflict. This is all capped off with a parting shot that fully sports this won’t be an easy story to classify or be patient to see where the next issue goes.

KNOW THE UNKNOWN! With sharp writing and exceptional art, the current incarnation of Outsiders make a hug splash in their latest run. Let by an ambitions take courtesy of the Hivemind, Carey and their team, Luke Fox and company look to shatter all you’ve known about this group and carve their own space into the legacy of DC Comics.

TRANSFORMERS #2 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, New Comic Book Day is more than meets the eye as the Energon Universe takes center stage! Ever since its’ debut in the pages of VOID RIVALS from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment, the new version of the legendary pop culture characters has been the talk of fans. Now ready to drop its’ next chapter, Optimus Prime and company have their work cut out for them with the Decepticons making waves.

TRANSFORMERS #2 by DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON, MIKE SPICER AND RUS WOOTEN shifts events into high gear with the fate of Earth hanging in the balance! Let’s take a deeper dive and see how things unfold here, shall we?

The issue kicks off with Optimus Prime talking with Spike Whitwicky. Optimus is admiring the beauty of Earth but accidently steps on a deer. Readers see how the pair spins out of that moment into giving a soft introduction into the other’s past. With the past issue’s events of losing Bumblebee and Jetfire, Optimus needed the moment to regroup and refocus for what is his mission now.

All the while, Starscream is leading the Decepticons into hunting down Energon. They attack a power plant and are preparing to harvest the energy to feast. The surrounding humans are not going down without a fight. They try resisting but are easily disposed of. Reinforcements are informed of the situation. One hero flies his fighter jet right into the crossfire of danger. Waiting in his path is Starscream, ready to end this interference once and for all. Who wins this round?

Readers witness a major player make their debut into the Energon Universe as the action ramps up. Once the encounter ends, an opening shot is taken that will not be the last from a Real American Hero. It appears they might have some back-up coming in this fight. The question lingering when the chapter ends is: will it be enough to save Earth?

Johnson wastes no time catching readers up to speed on what Optimus Prime is all about. The heart-felt conversation with Spike leads to a glimpse at the greater picture involving the conflict between Autobots and Decepticons. Readers bare witness to how Prime is adapting to his new home and fighting the good fight. They also see that he’s not alone in protecting the Earth from the unwelcomed.

The debut of the recognizable character feels like the big event longtime fans want it to be. The action is crisp and moves quickly. There is no wasted set-up. The closing moment of the battle will be one to get fans excited about what is coming down the road without question. The closing act brings the energy back to a normal level as more set-up work is done for an already engaging story.

The art is vintage DWJ. BIG action when it happens. Excellent character moments to invest the readers in-between. The opening moments with Optimus and Spike reflects the caring Optimus has while showing the pain he’s dealing with losing members he considers family. This is capped off with a near full panel shot of Cybertron as Optimus descibes it to the readers.

This is offset by the amazing high-flying action battle between Starscream and THAT character. The panels pop off the page with every motion taken by the combatants. Even when Starscream makes a deadly action, it is answered with a striking line of panels, letting the character have a closing moment to fully announce their debut to the EU. Leaving with a subtle reveal, the art closes the door on this chapter, leaving fans wanting more as soon as they can read it.

The second round of Autobots vs. Decepticons keeps the hype and excitement going with an excellent combo of action and drama. With a high-profile debut stealing the spotlight, Superb writing and imagery raises the stakes for the robots in disguise with an issue you can’t miss!

PUNISHER #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are entering a new era with one of Marvel Comics’ most infamous characters. Ever since his debut in Amazing Spider-Man #129 in 1974, Frank Castle has been a walking force of nature against evil. With a vicious disregard for lawbreakers, the walking death machine has left a polarizing trail of moments with readers due to his complex history and views.

That all changed with the events of The Punisher #12 by Jason Aaron, Jesus Saiz and Paul Azaceta. Frank Castle is gone. That doesn’t mean there is no Punisher.

The story begins at a destroyed house. The name “Garrison” is barely recognized on the weathered mailbox. The police have arrived to investigate the scene. Readers see the detectives at work. The home belonged to Joe Garrision. His wife Stephanie and two kids, Laura and Danny were killed in what is being called a possible gas leak explosion. After more investigating, a bomb is found in the wreckage…

Things shift to The Black Dragon Lagoon. A man is at the bar. Surrounding him is the Inner Demon Gang, known for wearing dragon-esque masks. The dialogue reflects they are protecting the man. The lights go out and a figure stands at the doorway. He asks for Sergei Federov aka The Sokovian. In naming his transgressions, The Sokovian is blamed for the explosion at the Garrisions.

Readers don’t have to wait long before the action begins. In-between the bullets and barbaric behavior, the talk switches back to the crime scene where the explosion is looking to have been a personal attack. Once back at the club, the body count has climbed and one man stands in the chaos: Joe Garrison.

As he flees the scene to an undisclosed location, the ruse of his “suburban identity” becomes exposed. With a SHIELD logo on the wall, the perceived “accountant” is far from ordinary.

As the news blares on the television, Garrison is the person of interest behind the bombing. That isn’t the only news as reports of the Inner Demon Gang massacre leak. The public account keeps hinting at the same question: Is Frank Castle back as the Punisher?

From here, readers see Garrison’s mission come to light. His path of vengeance leads him into another dangerous direction. Can this new “Punisher” survive long enough to find justice? With tension mounting, Garrison’s path leads readers into the battlefield and closes with a lasting impression this story is far from over.

With Pepose at the writing duties, there was no doubt fans would get their money’s worth. After reading this debut, the writing borrows the “best” of Frank Castle and merges it with Joe Garrison’s duality as SHIELD agent and mournful man. The opening act doesn’t hold back on establishing Garrison as a threat in his own right.

Once Garrison comes across a threat out of his league, Pepose gets creative in how to overcome the odds. This plays into the logo hidden in the lair background. Where Castle’s background and training was when he started is different than Garrison. The skill level is featured in the final act and leads to leaving its own mark on readers that a new era has started.

Pacing slows down just enough to give readers a break in the action before the bullets and blows start flying again. With just one issue, Pepose lets fans know the Joe Garrison era has kicked off with a bang.

Wachter and Brown bring the brutality of the character legacy with a new energy to it. Garrison’s attacks are displayed with more precision and patience than Castle’s. The conclusion of the Inner Demon Gang massacre gives readers a standout full panel page.

Once the main antagonist appears, the art holds nothing back at the savage technique Garrison uses to survive. The panels reflect the viciousness Garrison uses in his attacks. This is also compliments by a series of panels that raise the stakes with the pressure it builds. Once the shot is fired to end the conflict, there is no illusion to who is standing in evils’ way. The parting visual ends events the only way it can: leaving readers waiting for the next issue to drop. Solid job all around.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

No Frank Castle, No Problem. Pepose blends the classic Punisher themes with a new character with excellent writing. The action flies off the pages via Wachter and Brown’s vision of unrelenting fury. With the action cranked up to a fever pitch, there is no way you want to miss this book when it drops on New Comic Book Day!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we’re following along the return of one of DC Comics’ most legendary teams. With a brand-new lineup and an impossible mission at hand, the Birds Of Prey have their work cut out for them. The question now is: who will stop them first - the mission or each other?

BIRDS OF PREY #3 by Kelly Thompson, Leonardo Romero, Jordie Bellaire and Clayton Cowles takes readers on a collision course with an immovable object. Let’s see how the team fares as they inch closer to conflict.

Assembled by Black Canary, Zealot, Big Bartha, Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) and Harley Quinn comprise this fromation of the Birds Of Prey. Their mission: Break into the Island of Themyscira and free Sin (Black Canary’s “sister”) from the Amazons before they cause the end of the world. Simple, right?

With the personalities clashing, the team follows a plan by Harley to sneak onto the island. With the help of King Shark, things look to be improving. With the Amazons preparing for what’s next, a possessed voice claims “the vessel is not ready”. Meanwhile the team is outside the island ready to make their entrance.

Sneaking in through the stomach of a Megalodon, the team enters the island. With the team split up, readers see the action unfold. Can they pull this mission off? Things escalate rather quickly as the goal might just be in sight. However, there is one factor still looming to deal with. The latter half of this chapter sets up for a major collision course which will have readers on the edge of their seats from. No spoilers here, but the final image is going to have fans very excited for what’s next.

Thompson blends in the personality conflicts with a search and rescue tale that doesn’t miss. Anytime Harley Quinn is involved, nobody knows how things will play out. Thompson presents her as both the ultimate wild-card and team player. This makes for mixed results with her teammates but gives this story a new dynamic to deal with. However, the breakout character (thus far) has been Zealot. Thompson keeps a safe distance between her and the team with distinct placement of her actions. it is very noteworthy as the story moves onward.

The latter half of the chapter provides a great deal of action involving two not connected with the team. It re-enforces the importance of the mission and the “final boss” which the team needs to overcome to succeed. The story has been a great read thus far with no signs of slowing down.

Romero and Bellaire provide a high-paced backdrop for what’s unfolding here. The reactions to Harley’s comments make for a subtle break in the tension of the mission. Zealot’s actions also play a role here as the panels set up more of her mystery yet to be told. The action delivers on showing why this team was assembled. The latter half amplifies that even further. The art reflects the “big fight feel” between two of DC’s well known characters. This all leads to a full page visual that brings this issue to a close with a loud exclamation point!

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The impossible mission gets more complicated with another strong issue by Thompson, Romero and the team. Solid writing combined with energetic art brings the explosiveness of events to a breaking point within these pages! Make sure you pick this up on New Comic Book Day!
