Factor in such great series on Comixology Originals alone such stories as We Only Kill Each Other and Mark Dawson’s Beatrix Rose: Vigilante and there is no question with this latest entry is generating so much buzz.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins with a haunting narration. There is a hand reaching through the yellow shading. Its’ intended target is a woman strapped and gagged to a gurney. Her name is Alex Greer.

Things change to what appears to be happier times. Alex is in a club in 1964 Amsterdam. Alex is dancing and enjoying the nightlife. A mysterious man tries to make time with Alex. She vaguely remembers him other than a big watch and bad hygiene. As the night takes over, Alex starts feeling the effects of the good time out.

Outside of the club, Alex vomits. The man tries to help her but Alex refuses. The man seems very focused on taking Alex somewhere for assistance until a stranger walks in and saves Alex from him.

Readers see how Alex’s night takes a different turn then expected. Heading into the final act, no one is prepared for where the story goes from here. Forget what you know and prepare for the unknown. If the final page is any indication, there is much to come to light other than a hangover from the night before.

There’s also a companion short story by Daleyna Abril and Marco Fodera that will be key to unraveling the mystery at hand.

Phillips scatters the pieces of the enigmatic puzzle being told here, you can’t help but be hooked for the long haul. Alex’s story starts out questionable from the openings page. However, it doesn’t take long for things to go sideways.

The build to the turning point almost feels like smoke and mirrors once the moment happens. It shows why Phillips is one of the best storytellers right now. From that moment, the story flips into a freefall which leaves many questions heading into the concluding pages, ensuring fans can’t afford to miss the next chapter.

Boyle’s art perfectly combines the feel of the 60’s with a haunting edge around it. The use of Yellow coloring plays such a big part in the visuals. There is no better case than the middle act. The usage builds around Alex’s new “friend”, building to a unique full page visual that tips readers off where things head next.

The switch of coloring brings the story back to a cold reality that readers will question especially after the final page. Get ready for a monster hit with this creative team only just starting.

FINAL POINT: 10 OUT OF 10

Phillips, Boyle and Napolitano make a big debut with a enrapturing thriller that no one can escape. Superb writing builds for a dramatic twist with stunning visuals solidifying the story you think you see is definitely not all that it seems. Highest possible recommendation for New Comic Book Day this week.

Since it’s debut this past March, the newest addition to the Massive-verse has made a huge impact not only in the comic book world but in the land of podcasts. Taking storytelling to this next level can be a daunting challenge but considering the masterminds behind it, fans know this is par for the course for Black Market Narrative. With its’ latest entry, the city of Pittsburgh braces for another blow as they try figuring out :Who Is No/One”?

NO/ONE #5 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (credit: Image Comics via Black market Narrative)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With who the public thinks is the “Accountability Killer” is (Aaron Kern) behind bars, someone else has picked up his vision of “hacktivism”. This is leading to a rising body count from a copycat killer and a city closer to the brink of exploding. A figure claiming to be No/One has been watching and looking to see who is behind these attacks. The vigilante isn’t alone in the quest for truth. Multiple people are trying to solve the mystery before things can get possibly worse.

Former Assistant Chief Ben Kern (Aaron’s father) is conducting his own investigation into matters. Detectives Singh and Harper have been assigned the case by have to face a demanding public searching for answers. Pittsburgh Ledger Editor Teddy Barlow and reporter Julia Paige have started a podcast for their search which has lead Julia into danger more than once.

Last issue, Senator Noah Kemp unveiled Prop 87, which would give residents legal rights to “preemptive Immunity” against attacks from No/One essentially.

This issue kicks off with Aaron Kern recanting his original plea of guilty. The Pittsburgh Ledger team is debating on how to approach the story. Julia believes Kern’s change of heart might be in reaction to Prop 87. JC Randle (Head of PL Media) reacts in a different way to the news. Randle wants to steer the focus of the “Who Is No/One” podcast onto possible suspects.

Meanwhile in jail, Aaron Kern meets with his new attorney, Roger Dennehy, about his attempt to become free. After their meeting, Dennehy drives away and pops a tire heading onto a bridge. Once he gets out to check, a visitor has appeared wanting a word with the lawyer. No/One cuffs him and throws him over the bridge to talk! The message is clear: Aaron Kern doesn’t leave jail!

How this interact ripples through the city will capture readers attention as they see the key players respond. Will Aaron Kern walk away? What does Ben Kern think of all this? What does this mean for No/One? Trust me when I say the mystery is anything but over by the time the closing image is seen.

NO/ONE #5 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (credit: Image Comics via Black market Narrative) Cover-Klaus Janson

BREAK: Higgins and Buccellato fucus the theme of this issue on the Prop 87 ramifications. Seeing the Press reaction first reflected what the public is processing at the news. It’s a shocking turn of events as Kern has been adamant of his role being the “Accountability Killer”. With the meetings he has later, the writing team sets up there is more to Kern’s agenda than readers have even begun to cypher. No/One’s time in the issue is maxed out perfectly, jumping in where needed. The clsoing act leaves much to be watchful for moving into the next chapter. At the halfway point, there is still much left to go before the answers are unveiled.

Borges and Englert keep panels driven by the expressions to Kern’s play throughout this issue. In the staff room, the debate about coverage highlights the mounting frustration at the bigger picture. No/One’s confrontation with Dennehy is impactful and shows the reader how driven No/One is willing to go. The half page panels jump off the page making these moments stand out. It’s only topped by an action sequence later that is completed with an amazing full page panel. The art always shines in this book and maintains the grim overtones of the story.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The saga of the “Accountability Killer” takes a surprising twist in the pages of Image Comics and Black Market Narrative’s hit series. Higgins, Buccellato, Borges and the team showcase the cause and effect of a defining moment in the series with strong writing and incredible art. The story is more than a comic so make sure you pick up the latest issue and new podcast episode on New Comic Book Day!

THE PENGUIN #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out a brand new series from DC Comics that features one of the most iconic rogues in the history of BATMAN. Over the years, Oswald Cobblepot has evolved from a gimmick villain to a force of nature in Gotham City’s underworld. Now with a new lease on life and past behind him, it appears fate has decided to pull him back to where it all began.

The Penguin #1 by Tom King, Rafael De Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo and Clayton Cowles gives readers an exciting tale as the next phase of Mr. Cobblepot’s life begins. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening now, shall we?

The Penguin #1 by Tom King, Rafael De Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo and Clayton Cowles (Credit: DC Comics - Cover Stefano Gaudiano and Scorpio Steele)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story starts out with the Batmobile floating in the Gotham River. Readers quickly find out it has been damaged and its’ two passengers aren’t fairing well either. Batman is severely injured, to the point he cannot escape. With being in a weakened state, Bats tries not letting his guard down to his unlikely companion: Oswald Cobblepot aka THE PENGUIN!

Cobblepot is wounded as well. Batman can’t save them. Cobblepot doesn’t want his help. There’s more on his mind at the moment.

Readers are taken back to Metropolis one year prior. A tailor is working on a suit for Cobblepot. A smart joke slips out his mouth while working on the suit. The tailor panics with fear as he knows he shouldn’t have said this. However, in a surprise move, Cobblepot brushes it off and forgives him for the snark remark!

What happened to the feared crime boss of Gotham? The journey begins to reveal itself as Oswald has appeared to have left his past goodbye for the realm of normalcy. However, as with all good things, how long can they last? An event transpires that changes the world Oswald has grown to love away from Gotham. Once the smokes clears, readers can fully expect big things forthcoming as the final image cements this story becoming an instant classic.

The Penguin #1 by Tom King, Rafael De Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo and Clayton Cowles (Credit: DC Comics - Cover Brian Bolland)

King sets up a complex foundation for the Penguin’s next journey. One area which King excels at is breaking down the inner thinking of his lead characters. In this scenario, Cobblepot’s life away from Crime seems to have given him some sense of peace. It is a vastly different approach to one of Batman’s most dangerous foes. The initial reaction I felt was Keyser Soze-esque. If you know, you know.

Once the scenario of events is presented for the reader, King leaves nothing to the imagination as Cobblepot’s return to the past is cemented with a final act. The build towards Cobblepot’s trouble was well-staged as the slow grind build will connect with readers that this will be something truly special to pick up at the LCS.

De Latorre and Maiolo kicks things off with an exclamation point as the Batmobile is sinking with a striking full page panel. Seeing both Batman and Penguin worse for wear lead into the story’s flashback on a high note. Their mannerisms of defeat were very noticable. Knowing their history (and How Bats was framed for Oswald’s “Death”), the art showcased their long-standing rivalry with a tensions feel. Their vision of Metropolis felt grounded and voided of anything connecting with the Man of Steel.

This played strongly into the shift in story. The panels had a distinct gritty feel heading into the final chapter. The tension grows as the art team goes for 9-panel pages before ultimately capping off this portion with a full-page climax to the big event happening with Oswald. The final few pages leaves o shadows of doubt that The Penguin is back in business and business is “good”.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

Oswald Cobblepot is dead. Long live Gotham’s Crime King. King shatters dreams of a peaceful life with superb writing. The panels by De Latorre and Maiolo’s bold visuals set the tone for a forging a new trail in what is sure to be a suspenseful tale for the ages. Make sure this issue is in your possession on New Comic Book Day!

Spiraling out of the pages of the award winning Something is Killing The Children, House of Slaughter has carving its own spot as must-read stories on New Comic Book Day. The solo stories based in the SIKTC world has been winning over fans with each run. Now with a brand new arc and creative team, the series is ready to feature a certain character ready for the spotlight!

House Of Slaughter #16 by Sam Johns, Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, and AndWorld Design along with Series development from James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera is hitting the Local Comic Shops this week. Let’s see how the latest tale kicks off, shall we?

House Of Slaughter #16 - Creative: Sam Johns, Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, and AndWorld Design along with Series development from James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera (Credit: Boom! Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

A monster is reeking havoc. A group of White Masks have arrived on the scene. They are searching for the main point of the monster’s base. One White Mask breaks away from the plan and is caught in the monster’s grasp. Once one of their group goes down, two call a formation and ask for the bait to be brought out.

The story shifts to where a group of young White masks are enjoying some down time at the Order of St. George when Cecilia Slaughter interrupts their time. There’s one big reason for her appearance. She is adding the White Mask known as Bait to the mission in Erie, Pennsylvania. Bait had his arms amputated.

The other masks banter amongst themselves not knowing why Bait gets to be selected. Readers soon find out as he is updated on the mission at hand.

What exactly is happening to cause a rising body count? Why is Bait selected for this? How does the Order of St. George tie in with this case? Readers begin the journey into this latest mystery with a fantastic starting point.

House Of Slaughter #16 - Creative: Sam Johns, Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, and AndWorld Design along with Series development from James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera (Credit: Boom! Studios)

Johns hits the ground running with setting the foundation of where this new venture is leading. Seeing the reactions after Bait was selected for the mission added to the mystique of his character. Johns also factors in a great comparison of Billiards and Alabaster. Showcasing a piece of the Orders’ history in such a manner is a fun way to peel back a hidden layer of their past. Pacing gave every portion room to let each segment breathe. Much like anything in the SIKTC line, just enough is revealed without exposing the true nature of any plot. The same can be said here with a well-crafted debut chapter.

Cadonici and Segala mix in personal reactions with the terrifying theme of the story with the visuals here. Right form the beginning, the altercation with the monster and White Masks make a big statement. Bait’s eyes speak volumes about what is happening around him. This is balanced by the reaction of the young group after his selection. The banter about him leads readers into thinking how important he is to breaking this case open. This plays into the final arc of this issue, where the calm before the storm reigns down on readers closing the beginning of what is sure to be another classic HoS saga.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The latest phase of the hit spin-off series from SIKTC doesn’t skip a beat presenting a captivating kickoff. Johns, Cadonici and the team highlight a White Mask’s trek into danger with solid writing and artwork. The story of Bait has only just begun but it is one you won’t want to miss.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the royal family of Kiros has been found dead in a questionable area of the city. Phaedra Essex and Pax are the two Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) assigned to the case. This hits especially close to home with Phaedra as she was linked to Freyal at one point. With Freyal’s death, tension has mounted to a fever pitch with Kiros’ residents. The public wants answers. Vested parties have interest.

With everyone from the Queen and family to the Kiros Three (last humans left) watching, the pair of Cloaks haven’t had an easy go-around. The search for answers have put Phaedra especially in the line of danger more than once. With some new information into their case, the pair has crashed a party in the Royal Castle. As they make their way through the party, they stumble across secrets neither were expecting.

This issue begins with Essex and Pax discovering the Taka Pens beneath the Castle. Readers find out quickly that Kiros has a very horrible secret that the family has been covering up. The Taka have been used and abused for their magic in energizing the city. The revelation is frightening as what one goes thru is displayed with no punches pulled. Essex and Pax can not believe what they have witnessed. As they plan on exposing this heinous treatments, they are stopped Lysanthir, one of the queens’ most loyal magicians.

What secrets get exposed, readers will brace themselves as the connection between Freyal’s death and the Taka begins to come clearer. With each page, the threads of mystery unwind. There is a great deal of information to take in which should bring closure to many lingering questions.

That said, the final act brings forth a rollercoaster of emotional payoffs and fast paced action. If you have read this series since day 1 (like I have), the ending will pack a serious inner blow as how events play out. If this is your first time diving in, you are either going to be searching your LCS for copies or waiting for the TPB in the fall. This issue packs everyhting you could want. The closing moments bring forth an interesting perspective heading into its’ next phase. it is a perfect closing….for now…..

BREAKDOWN: Thompson has mastered leading readers into the deep layers of this story. Once this finale gets rolling, their patience is paid off with a tremendous issue. Phaedra and Pax have been protagonists that are easy to cheer for. Their reaction to the Takas is very reflective of how the readers will be. Once that revelation hits, the story shifts into high gear.

Like any mystery, the clues behind Freyal’s death come to light. Thompson paints such a tragic picture and hits on many levels. Never at any point was it treated as open and shut. As more information comes to light, readers can see how impactful these actions were. Thompson doesn’t let up as events shift forward into the Taka situation. The pacing gave each plot point ample time to become enamored in. It is never felt as wasted space or forced time. It is a perfect set-up to lead into the closing moments. For where things go from here is anyone’s guess. In the present, fans will have nothing but praise for this concluding issue and story.

McClaren and Carey present some intense visuals for this closing arc chapter. The Taka scene in the beginning spares no time in bringing the horrors directly to the reader. This is capped off with a full-page panel that drops a big exclamation point on the scene. Once the fallout from this begins, the emotions start pouring out of the panels.

The flashback moments prove to be quite eye-catching as the color scheme used makes them pop off the pages. They don’t lose the key elements of the story that they are telling. Each reaction and mannerism adds more to Thompson’s writing. Readers don’t have much time to recover from all these moments as the story picks up its’ pace going into the closing. The art team demonstrate how quickly things are progressing with the actions. Going into the final pages, McClaren and Carey tie in reactions with the characters to say goodbye, leading to a closing full page panel ushering in the next phase of this amazing story.

*** POSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** PREVIOUS REVIEW

A reporter named Serena Biggs has been investigating the person behind the mysterious polaroid pictures found in New York City. When the danger of searching brings her in the path of a silent assassin named Sprout, Serena has no idea what she has just walked into. After a “conversation”, Sprout lets Serena (slightly) in on her revenge mission for her grandfather. Now the pair has to prepare for armed gunman walking right to their front door…..

The issue begins with the gunman walking into the hotel Sprout is staying in. They’re pressuring the clerk at the front desk for information. He reveals Sprout rented every room in the hotel. With a full search underway, Sprout and Serena look on as the danger draws closer.

Readers see how Sprout is ready for the attack as the hotel has traps lying all around. Can the pair survive long enough to crack into Sprout’s mission of revenge? If they do, what is the next steps in the plan or has someone bet them to the punch? There’s a lot going on with this issue that is sure to please heading into the next chapter.

KLIK KLIK BOOM #2 by Doug Wagner, Doug Dabbs, Matt Wilson and Ed Dukeshire (Credit: Image Comics)

BREAKDOWN: Wagner goes all in on displaying how crafty Sprout is with her mission. The plan of going “Home Alone” in the hotel has a great twist. Readers can instantly see how strategic Sprout is without coming across forced. The flashback sequences with her grandfather hit their marks as to why she’s so committed to her mission. Seeing the story play out through Serena’s eyes gives a solid perspective mirroring the readers. Leading into the final act, Wagner displays the quirks between the pair before slamming on the breaks for the final image. There’s a lot to enjoy with this story.

Dabbs and Wilson present a situation where the scenes could misfire for being too cartoonish, but hit the marks with a bullseye. The hotel panels are visually popping off, giving the readers a memorable series of events. The flashback panels continue add another layer to the story with how deeply invested Sprout is for vengeance. The mannerisms between Serena and Sprout pulls back the seriousness of the tale, giving readers a chance to catch a breath before heading into the closing act. Strong final one page panel to end things on a more puzzling note while keeping fans invested heading to the midway issue.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The odd couple pairing of Serena and Sprout are tasked with finding a way to survive with mounting pressure. Wagner’s writing keeps readers glued in, constructing a multi-leveled tale. This is matched panel for panel with exceptional art from Dabbs and Wilson, giving readers much to ponder while figuring out the true mission at hand. This is a book you can’t miss on New Comic Book Day.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** See Previous Review

When the world fell into eternal darkness, survival became an understatement. With artificial light being the only guide, the eighteen wheeler of Valentina “Val” Riggs aka Sundog has become more vital that anyone could imagine.

When an offer of transport shows signs of hope, the journey Val (along with her adopted brother Emory, Augustus McCray (Gus) and his grand-daughter Bailey, also known as Piper) started has gone in many directions. With what’s left of the “Sundog Convoy”, the group arrives in Eos, a land of eternal sunshine. However darkness isn’t too far behind.

Blacktop Bill, a dangerous follower of NOX, has tracked them down to Eos. With a gamble to possibly stop Nox, Val and Emory make a run for Argus to attempt victory. A key factor of the plan is Emory making a psychic link and allowing the darkness inside his mind. Desperate times call for desperate measures. With a link in place, the young boy faces a great challenge. The darkness won’t go without a fight as Bill counters the move.

NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design (Credit Image Comics)

This issue kicks off with Bill driving the Eighteen Wheeler directly at Emory. Being ties to a chair doesn’t help matters. Dodging the truck, Emory senses Bill inside his mind and approaching. Meanwhile, in the physical world, Val is driving as fast as she can with danger looming. This is only the beginning of a hellish nightmare that stays shrouded in cold shadows.

Readers get taken along with Emory in confronting some of his deepest fears while holding Bill back. Will he be strong enough? What will Bill do if he defeats Emory? The stakes have never been higher as the journey showcases what pure evil looks like. Will they make it to Argus in time? There are defining answers as the story progresses. A thrill-ride needs to end at some point and the final panel secures the brakes until the last stop in Nocterra #16.

NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design (Credit Image Comics)

BREAKDOWN: Snyder takes Emory into the darkest places of his own mind with a chilling tale. The beginning reminded me a touch of the Metallica video for “Enter Sandman”. It is fitting as Blacktop Bill’s ruthlessness on this plane steals the issue. Seeing where Bill takes Emory to confront made an immediate impact. The narration of his dark vision of the world also made Bill a compelling character. Whenever Emory would think he would fight, Bill immediately tortured him back.

Through all this, the writing made Emory into a fitting challenger to Bill. Even at his lowest, Emory kept going forward. This connects with readers as to knowing how important the mission was. The final act brings a serious stop as to what the future appears to bring. All in all, another fantastic read.

Sharp jumping in for art duties gelled perfectly with the story. His style of art mixed with brooding coloring and inks added to the despair of the world of endless night. From the opening with the eighteen wheeler, Sharp set the terror in motion. The use of the headlight coloring made a big statement. The visuals of Emory confronting his past also jumps off the page. It brings an emotional connection front and center for readers. This is followed by an excellent visual combining a painted feel to illustrate Bill’s attack on Emory. There are a few great one page panels that fill the closing act and really end things with a huge climax, taking the story into an unexpected path.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The grim presence of Nox’s most dangerous follower shines through in an incredible one-shot issue. The haunting fantasy battlefield of Emory’s mind comes to life through excellent writing and stunning visuals. The creative team keeps the petal to the metal with an engaging tale that is a must-have on New Comic Book Day.

BREAKDOWN: Nobody currently does slow burn drama quite like James Tynion. Kicking off the new arc. the pacing allows for steady builds in all the major storylines. With her confidence rattled, Erica comes across determined to get back on track. This is overshadowed by moments between Gabi and Riqui. BREAKDOWN: Starer keeps readers guessing with the secret side of Layla. Readers see how Layla struggles to realize she’s more than human which leads into a blunt opening sequence. When events pick up after Davi, readers get a true feel for what is about to unfold. There are some notable new characters introduced. It all plays into the unexpected world Layla has become a target in. The issue keeps readers guessing throughout. The closing act brings up more questions with a striking final image.

FISHFLIES #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new series from a writer who’s been delivering some great new series over at Image Comics as of late. With hit series such as Phantom Road and Bone Orchard Mythos to name a few, Jeff Lemire is set to release another story that comic fans need to check out! Fishflies #1 by Lemire mixes elements of Horror and Fantasy that readers won’t see coming. Let’s take a closer look at this debut issue, shall we?

Fishflies #1 by Jeff Lemire (Letterer: Steve Wands) - Credit: Image Comics

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins on a summer night in Bell River, Ontario. Three boys are walking to a quick mart in search of some popsicles. On the walk, the boys come across a swarm of fishflies covering the building and surrounding ground. Readers find out that Fishflies show up for roughly a week then die off.

The boys seem determined to cross the flies to get some popsicles. One boy is prompted by a dare to cross the flies for $20. Shoeless, he starts a journey that becomes soon regrettable.

Meanwhile, a man wakes up in a field. Bleeding and holding a gun, he runs towards a nearby barn. The Fishflies start attaching themselves to him. With a sudden flashback, the story shifts back to the quick mart as the boy makes it inside the store. The sights he sees will send chills to the readers. A clerk lays dead and a man behind the counter is pointing a gun at the boy.

With the story shifted back to present time, the wounded man crashes into the bar. He is discovered by Franny Fox, a lone girl who shows the stranger kindness as he grows sicker and weaker. She leads him to another location to rest.

With news breaking about the incident at the mart, how long can the man outrun the law? What will happen when Franny finds out the truth? What really happened at the mart? Readers watch the evolution of the event’s fallout, leading to a shocking ending no one will be ready for. Expect the unexpected with the final act of a strong first issue.

Fishflies #1 by Jeff Lemire (Letterer: Steve Wands) - Credit: Image Comics - Cover: Peach Momoko

Lemire is doing double duty (writing and art) for this issue. He lays the groundwork for a captivating mystery blending in many elements for a distinct feel. From the opening salvo, the tone is set with a shocking action. Readers can’t help but react to the robber’s actions with shock and sadness.

Once Franny enters the story, she offers a big counter-balance to the dark overtones of the story. Readers see her being someone who’s goodwill radiates off the pages. The story moves between flashbacks and gradually builds on the deterioration of the robber’s health. The mystique of the flies factors in with the shocking ending of this issue. Just when readers think they know what’s going on, Lemire shifts gears. The storytelling sends fans into a direction they won’t want to steer away from.

As for the art, Lemire makes a big splash with the two-page visual of the flies covering the mart. The image sinks in with readers as an odd occurrence with trouble looming. The visuals of the robber waking up in the filed is another case of excellent storytelling. The use of colors make big statements when added into the simple black/white color scheme.

Whether it’s the red of the blood or the yellow overtone of certain pages, illuminating the scenes, this additive make a big impression to the story. There is a huge two-page spread that mixes this together, sending the story into the final act. Lemire caps things off with an interesting few panels, giving the fans much to process moving forward.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Fishflies #1 keeps readers on edge with strong writing and eye-catching visuals. Lemire combines natural horror themes with a touch of fantasy to present a story that stands on its’ own at the Local Comic Shop. Keep an eye out for this book on New Comic Book Day.

PHANTOM ROAD #5 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, one of the most underrated comics on the shelves continues its trek on the horror highway. Phantom Road #5 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands from Image Comics dives deeper into the journey into the supernatural of Dom and Birdie. With more twists and turns forming, there’s no shortage of delivering excitement on each mile. Let’s take a closer look at what’s unfolding within these pages now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** PREVIOUS ISSUE REVIEW

“What a long, strange trip its’ been”… It is the easiest way to describe the life of Dom and Birdie currently. When Dom assists Birdie during an accident, they become bonded with a mysterious object. Transporting to another dimension and fighting faceless creatures is now part of the daily routine. That is until one creature turns into a human! Now on the run for a potential murder and looking for answers, the unlikely pair have to find a way to work together long enough to find a way out of this situation.

Now thrown into the mix is FBI agent Theresa Weaver who is trying to put together a case, but winds up in a conspiracy of her own. Last readers saw her, she was kidnapped and interrogated by a masked figure concerning “Project Jackknife”. When the figure leaves, Weaver starts leaving an abandoned warehouse trying to put her own mystery together.

This issue kicks off with Weaver looking at a file dating back to at least 1991. The news paper clipping inside detail about a serial killer on the highway. When Weaver leaves the building, she checks her phone. Agent Pike left messages for her but when she calls back, the number is out of service. Director Wallis gets a hold of her and claims Pike was removed from the case. Readers quickly find out Wallis isn’t on the up and up with Weaver with a familiar figure in his office.

Meanwhile, Dom and Birdie have an immediate danger in their path! Will the pair make it out of this one? What about Agent Weaver? Readers see when the pace slows down after the danger, more mysteries are revealed with a huge reveal going into the closing moments. There’s going to be even more questions about the figure seen at the last moments. Without question, there is definitely more tread on the tires with this tale to be told.

BREAKDOWN: Lemire adds more intrigue to the story before ending chapter one. Weaver’s story plays out as conspiracy cover-up with the actions of Director Wallis. With Weaver closing in, Lemire mixes in hints of a bigger threat looming with a cameo that will shock some readers. Dom and Birdie’s portion of the book dives into the horror aspect with Birdie’s impatience leading into danger for all. Pacing gave equal time to all as things look to be slowly tyin together. Solid surprise reveal near the end of the book.

Walta and Bellaire play off the conspiracy angle for Weaver’s story panels. The dark coloring of the warehouse reflects the conspiracy and the confusion spun by Director Wallis. The attack on Dom and Birdie connects to readers for how terrifying the moment is. The panels are brutal and the pair’s reactions paint the picture of terror that’s been lingering since issue one. Capturing the facial shocks and anger between the pair also added to the drama. The huge reveal jumps out and gets its’ proper due via a full page panel. The art team keeps things rolling along with very consistent work with the ever-evolving story.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

Lemire, Walta and the team keep things rolling along with another excellent read. The secrets grow deeper with fantastic writing and art shifts things into high-gear with a big reveal in the final moments. Keep an eye out for this book on New Comic Book Day!

Hit me up on ODPH Social media and let me know what you thought of Phantom road #5. thanks for reading!

GRIM #11 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the coolest book at the local comic shop returns via BOOM! Studios. Since its’ debut the horror saga of the afterlife’s favorite reaper made a huge impact on fans with its’ incredible storytelling and art. It may sound like a broken record at this stage but this series is so much more than just a comic. It is a whole vibe. GRIM #11 from Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano brings Jessica Harrow back to New Comic Book Day with a new chapter kicking off! Let’s take a closer look at how things shape up in the return, shall we?

GRIM #11 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (Credit: BOOM! Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** PREVIOUS ISSUE REVIEW

Who would have thought one lost soul would have caused this much trouble? This is probably what reaper Jessica Harrow is thinking as her (after)life has been turned upside down and then some. After trying to bring a soul to the afterlife, it escapes and she somehow crosses over into the land of the living to redeem it.

Along with her friends Eddie and Marcel, Jessica searches out to find out the mystery behind her. Adira, current ruler of the afterlife and her aunt, is none too pleased with Jessica’s curiosity into the matter and has set out to stop her once and for all.

The search has led to the revelation Jessica is the daughter of Death! When the happy reunion goes down in Las Vegas, an entity known as The End looks stop Jessica. An epic battle takes place with Death’s demise in its aftermath.

Now banished into the land of the living, Jessica and her friends try adjusting. That plan goes out the window when people can no longer die and Jessica appears to be the cause! Denying a legacy laid out by the Sisters of Fate, Jessica’s actions lead to more trouble when it results in Marcel going to Hell, and her and Eddie’s capture by fellow reaper Annabel, who betrays Jessica and has cut a deal with Adira.

Oh yeah, let’s not forget Jessica’s mother Lilah is out of jail and now a guest of the entity known as Life.

This issue opens up with the Sisters of Fate recapping events in their own way. Meanwhile Annabel is meeting with Adira and Kelly (the devil responsible for Marcel’s current situation) about their barging. The soul exchange isn’t what Adira wants as she appears tentative to unleash that person back. Kelly sways the choice and starts the process.

All the while, Life is continueing his pursuit of an amulet in Lilah’s possession. Offering the world might now be enough, but something else is shown and the reaction screams from the page!

As for our favorite reaper, Jessica and Eddie are in their prison with tensions mounting. Things look hopeless until a surprise figure appears with a deal that readers won’t believe when they see it!

Who is Annabel trying to unleash? Will Lilah give up the amulet? And what about that final page?! Grim is back in a big way with much for readers to talk about!

GRIM #11 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (Credit: BOOM! Studios)

GRIM #11 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (Credit: BOOM! Studios)

BREAKDOWN: Phillips wastes no time in bring in the tension and turmoil for the return. Adira’s manipulations have been one of the book’s strongest key points. Seeing how she reacts to when Annabel turns the tables on the deal made for an interesting dynamic to the overall picture. Life and Lilah’s portion of the book added another layer of mystery as Lilah’s true intentions have never been fully exposed, but readers get a small crack into where she’s leaning.

There have now been a few examples that Jessica is still reeling from events and needs reassurance for what she’s doing. The banter between Jessica and Eddie fully displayed the pressure Jessica puts on herself and eventual start of her road to achieving her destiny. It’s another quality element to her story that connects with fans. Jessica is far from perfect but perfect enough to root for where she’s going.

Flaviano and Renzi remind fans why Grim is more than a book, it’s a whole vibe with the art in this issue. Starting from the Sisters of Fate’s intro, the visuals of the painting and the statues make a big statement from the jump. It gives readers a feel of how fate is playing Chess with all the characters. The depiction of Eddie and Jessica’s prison is another fantastic visual that readers will be blown away by. As great as that is, just wait for the two-page spread with Life’s surroundings! The masterful artwork displayed each issue never lets up and that’s such a win for fans. Excellent full page panel to send readers home to the next issue on.

NO/ONE #4 (IMAGE COMICS via BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE)

For this entry, the story that transcends normal comic storytelling is back with an all new issue from Image Comics and Black Market Narrative. With an equally important companion podcast, the mystery that has taken comics most exciting line, the massive-verse, by storm shows no signs of letting up its’ hold on comic fans. NO/ONE #4 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou brings the identity of the masked vigilante closer to the truth behind the question haunting Pittsburgh: Who Is No/One.

Let’s not wait another minute and jump right into the latest chapter, shall we?

NO/ONE #4 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Credit: Image Comics via Black Market Narrative)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** PREVIOUS ISSUE REVIEW

How much weight can a city hold before it breaks? That has been a question circling around the city of Pittsburgh since a figure known as “The Accountability Killer” started their attacks. Aaron Kern is behind bars, publicly recognized as “No/One”. Some would think the danger is over but they were wrong. With a rising body count and copycat killer running loose, the city and their residents are doing all they can to hold things together.

Former Assistant Chief Ben Kern (Aaron’s father) has started his own investigation. Pittsburgh Ledger Editor Teddy Barlow and reporter Julia Paige are covering the story via podcast, putting them into some uncomfortable situations. Detectives Singh and Harper are doing what they can, but the pressure feels too great Amidst this chaos, a new person has emerged, appearing to be the real No/One!

Last issue, “No/One” stopped Kenneth Chbosky from harming Julia. This is coming off the heels of Julia’s mother, reporter Alanna Paige trying to get Julia to speak out about the case. Meanwhile, Ben Kern starts following Chuck Tate, a star football player with ties to No/One victim Coach Nathan Cade.

This issue begins dated June 2023. A corrections officer picks off a letter for Aaron Kern and what he sees shocks him to the core. Elsewhere, Ben has become a regular at a sports bar where Tate frequents. On the TV is Alanna Paige, who is speaking out publicly against her daughter. Tate walks in the bar and makes small talk with “Jim” aka Ben. When a message interrupts the conversation, Tate makes an excuse to leave but Ben follows him to see it’s a lie

At the same time, Senator Noah Kemp unveils a new legal bill with HUGE ramifications involving No/One! Speaking of the vigilante, another potential victim’s name has been revealed in a certain way. How does this tie back to the vigilante? Has he been set-up? Readers are thrusted into action as No/One races to stop the next dead body. Will he get there in time? Who is behind this attack? What of Ben and Julia’s side stories. Rest assured, the mystery behind this series brings a fair balance of drama and action. The slow burn pace is in full effect and things now shift towards the podcast from this must-have issue.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Buccellato delve further into the mystery without showing their playing cards. Ben Kern’s story stands out a bit more than the others this issue with his detective work and emotional break point in the latter half. Seeing how Kern speaks with Tate about why he does what he does made a loud statement. The banter with Aaron in prison is always strong material. It feels like “Silence Of The Lambs” lingers around their moments. Senator Kemp’s play adds to fuel more conspiracy elements. Readers can start getting the sense that No/One’s case runs deeper in the heart of Pittsburgh than anyone can fathom. The action moments give a nice break to the character build but, as the final page cements, the book builds up the slow play for an even greater reveal yet to come.

Borges and Englert give Kern’s story more detail with his reactions to what he’s uncovering. Playing naïve to the initial talk with Tate, the body language given off connects with readers of how desperate he is to solve the case. There’s a solid 1 page panel where this component shines through. There is no shortage of action within these pages as Borges constructs 4 page panels for all the high-rise visuals. The pace feels fast and reflects the intensity of the fighting. Its great storytelling which has become synonymous with this series. Excellent close-out visuals to set things forward towards the latest podcast.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

In a short amount of time, Higgins, Buccellato, Borges and the team have taken readers into deep waters with a mystery that presents more questions than answers. Superb writing and exceptional art carries the slow-burn drama into another unforgettable chapter. Don’t miss this (and the companion podcast) on New Comic Book Day.

The story of Gabby And Trudy’s adventure into home owning has been anything but average with the terrifying scenario they have now become apart of. Let’s not delay another second and see how things close out, shall we?

I HATE THIS PLACE #10 by Kyle Starks, Artyom Topilin, and Lee Loughridge (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

What started out as a promising future for Gabby Rutherford and Trudy Durant quickly turned into an unrelenting nightmare. The couple moves into a 500 acre farm left to them by Gabby’s aunt. During the first night, Gabby is awoken by their cows franticly mooing. When she leaves the house, a ghost touches her shoulder and transports her somewhere else for a brief moment. When Trudy wakes to check on what’s happened, the sky has opened overhead of their new home.

Searching for answers, the couple finds a VHS tape titled “Watch me” that gives a small part of an even bigger puzzle no one could envision unfolding. The VHS tape is left by Gabby’s great aunt Marilyn. Marilyn bears warnings that cannot be ignored. With the knowledge of the farm’s “rules” and the horned man lurking outside it, Gabby and Trudy dive into picking up the pieces of their dreams from the nightmare reality it is.

Through the course of the series, fans have met a wide variety of characters ranging from the dastardly Frank “Itchy” Renta, the charismatic Ghost Hunter extraordinaire Dante Howitzer and the unrelenting Joesph Durant to name a few. Mixing those characters with the violent and terrifying backdrop of the story made for quite the intense read. After the first arc concluded, the second has been focusing on Trudy’s father coming to the farm to bring his daughter back to his doomsday cult. He soon finds out, once you’re on the farm, you can never really leave. The drama is intensified when Gabby is thrusted into the future where she learns the truth about the farm and how it holds the key to the end of the world…literally.!

Inside the house was a piece of alien technology that the Horned Man had been searching for since the first issue. With this piece of equipment, a machine could be activated that destroys Earth as we know it. While Gabby has the piece, she is taken prisoner by Joseph, who now has the knowledge of what to do with the machine, thinking it’s for a “greater good” with an army from the future.

The finale starts with the Horned Man searching the farm property assessing the carnage all around from the battle of Joseph’s forces and the creatures haunting the place. In his path is Trudy, looking for her glasses after Joseph threw them into the woods, knowing she can’t see without them. All the while, Gabby is being led at gunpoint by Joseph to the machine with key in hand! With all these combustible personalities in one place, the sequence of events next couldn’t be any more intense!

Who makes it out alive? Is there a chance the Earth survives? Readers get all the answers they can handle as the finale gives the climatic throwdowns and emotional pulls one expects from a series finale. Nothing is held back with Gabby and Trudy’s desperate attempt to stop the apocalypse from happening. When the smoke clears, readers get a clear-cut vision of what the future holds with a final act that is sure to please long-time readers of this series.

Frank “Itchy” Renta (I HATE THIS PLACE #4) by Kyle Starks, Artyom Topilin, and Lee Loughridge (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment)

BREAKDOWN: In its’ conclusion, Starks drives home the strongest element of this story: the relationship of Gabby and Trudy is unstoppable. With the individual match-ups (Trudy vs Horned Man, Gabby vs Joseph), the re-enforcement of the other’s support is a key factor in pushing thru the moment in the attempt to win. Each character gets ample page time to let readers become entranced in how the stakes keep being raised. Once the dramatic crescendo is hit later in the book, the emotional outpour of Trudy’s words can be felt through the page. Pacing was never an issue as all loose detail are tied up with a few things for readers to ponder post-read. It’s exactly what you want from a finale.

Topilin and Loughridge begin this issue with a unique approach with 3 huge (1 full page) panels depicting the Horned Man’s assessment. The visuals make a big impact setting the tone for what is coming next. The inner fatigue of the lead characters emotions play a big part in connecting the dire times with the readers. This is clearly evident with Gabby is being lead to the machine by Joseph. The horror and violence factor didn’t disappear as the Horned Man’s attack on the soldiers left nothing to chance. However, the moment that jumps out after each read has been the small 3 panels for Trudy re-assuring Gabby of what needs to be done in the closing act. The confidence and love shown by Trudy is the extra boost needed to attempt the final save. Perfect closing panels to send this series off…for now?

FINAL POINT: 10 OUT OF 10

The terrifying world of monsters and ghosts is met head-on by an intensely deep relationship that refuses to falter under any circumstance. Trudy and Gabby’s final endeavor to save the world is brought to life by incredible writing and exceptional visuals to take readers into the closing events of a fantastic series. Highest possible recommendation this week for New Comic Book Day.

The danger keeps escalading as some continue to move thru the house, until the last page. The final moments leave more questions than answers but that’s a huge win for readers that the story is far from over.

GRANDMA CHAINSAW #2 - CREATIVE: Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balondo, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz (Credit: Source Point Press/Top Hat Studios)

BREAKDOWN: Radford and Dunford skillfully master balancing the horror and humor for this issue. The D.E.A.D. Squad is as ridiculous as it sounds, yet, they provide well-timed humor into the dark tale. Clearly, they are not ready for this job and it’s only a matter of time till their LARPing catches up with them. The banter between them and Gabby’s rationalization makes for the enjoyable break between the terror.

Excellent full-page breakdown of Hazel to give a closer look at what she’s about without revealing everything. Hearing it through the Squad’s voice added a nice layer to the story. Is it true or completely off-base? Only the reader will decide.

The story plays into the classic Horror Movie build and never feels forced or rushed for shock. Solid ending to this issue to continue the mystery for another round. There’s much for Horror readers to enjoy with this tale.

As with every great Horror story, readers measure it by the kills. Balondo and Smith bring the OMG to a few noteworthy characters. One that will no doubt have fans talking involves an air tank. No spoilers but you know the team had fun creating that visual (even Lentz writing the “Boop! :-)”.

Balondo constructs the eerie feel of the panels building small then leading into bigger and even full page visuals. One standout page is the group shot with a mysterious figure lurking in a doorway. Another is the creative way to say “Part Two” mixed in the background.

The little touches of detail add more apprehension for the group’s travel leading to the ominous closing visual. It’s another smash success.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Top Hat Studios plays to their strengths to give fans another smash fusion of horror and humor. Taking Radford and Dunford’s lead with doubling down on classic set-ups and timely banter, Balondo, Smith and Lentz run with striking visuals of the unlikely survivors’ plight to avoid being the next on Hazel’s “Eat, Slay, Love” diet.

Time is running out on the Horus in Hell project (where you can add this issue onto so don’t delay - sign up now)! Hit me up on ODPH social media and let me know what you thought of Grandma Chainsaw #2! Thanks for reading!

BONE ORCHARD: TENEMENT #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Whenever fans see JEFF LEMIRE and ANDREA SORRENTINO paired up on a book, they know they are in for something special. With a resume touting Green Arrow, Old Man Logan and Gideon Falls to name a few, a new title involving those two is going to create some excitement.

BONE ORCHARD: TENEMENT #1 is the latest tale from THE BONE ORCHARD MYTHOS, which has already gifted fans with another incredible story: BONE ORCHARD: TEN THOUSAND BLACK FEATHERS. What are Lemire, Sorrentino and Dave Stewart planning for this new saga? Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening here.

BONE ORCHARD: TENEMENT #1 BY JEFF LEMIRE, ANDREA SORRENTINO AND DAVE STEWART (Credit: Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue begins with an ominous voice mentioning seven people who seem intertwined together by fate. Readers meet Issac, his mother Amamda, Justin, Felix, Tanya, Bob and Gary. All have a different story to tell. With a haunting narration, the story focuses on Issac, a young boy staring into a horrifying image. With bodies hanging from a tree bathed in a red sky, Issac stands frozen looking into a faceless stranger.

Before he can say anything, Issac is snapped back to reality. The sky changes back to a normal color. The tree he stared at has no bodies around it. The faceless stranger has turned into Justin, who’s trying to enjoy his cigarette in peace. Their common bond is revealed to be a Tenement. But as readers soon find out, this place has more than one sees on the outside.

The story shifts thru various interactions of the tenants of the building. Each one has an issue they deal with. Each relationship varies from pleasant to confrontational with all signs leading back to Issac. After the young boy has a conversation with another resident, what seems like a meaningless talk looks to bring something sinister in its wake. As Issac stares out into the sky, a book is nearby that is all too familiar readers of the Bone Orchard.

What could be transpiring in this building? Things begin to ramp up in the late hours of the night with a few restless neighbors. In an instant, an event happens that proves to be the match to the emotional timebomb ready to explode. The repercussions of this are felt with each tenant but one now appears to be heading towards a dark path with the closing image feeding readers worst suspicions. Get ready for something wicked on the horizon.

BREAKDOWN: Lemire gives readers a wide range of characters bound together with a sinister mystery looming. Each tenant of the building has their own tales but Issac quietly became the lead of this story. Lemire writes him as a normal child troubled by disturbing visions. His interactions with the other residents seems normal at first but one seems to know what Issac is truly capable of and ushers him in that path of destiny. Even with Issac getting a good majority of panel time, pacing allowed fair time for readers to meet the group involved with this series. The other neighbors each have problems they’re dealing with but none seem to know what is next. The book’s tone is troubling and grounded. The character’s own dramas might be blinding them but their roads seem to cross together with the event of the final act. Where things lead now is unknown but rest assured, there is much to be invested with this series.

Sorrentino and Stewart capture the grittiness of daily life with a supernatural shadow on the horizon. The initial introduction brings readers in with giving each major character a three panel mini story to clarify a piece of their daily activities. This method varies later int he book but smaller panel usage give a more personal feel to each sub-plot. When the first supernatural visual hits, it’s a direct, blunt two page spread filled with the brooding sky and mysterious figure Issac is looking at. The intensity of this is mimicked later in the book as the late night hours portion builds readers’ anxiousness up to a big payoff. The full-page lightbulb panel kicks off the final act with some emotional outbursts leading to a calmer stage sending this book into its’ next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The Bone Orchard universe crashes back into comic shops with a defiant new story that readers won’t be able to escape. Lemire and Sorrentino orchestrate a brooding tale with superb writing and haunting art, reflecting the danger slowly revealing itself to readers with every page. BATTLE CHASERS #10 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast.

For this entry, a legendary series returns to the comic shops this week for the first time since 2001! In the early 1990’s after the big Seven (Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, and X-Men line artists Rob Liefeld (X-Force), Whilce Portacio (Uncanny X-Men), Marc Silvestri (Wolverine) and Jim Lee (X-Men) left Marvel Comics formed Image Comics, many fans wondered who would be the next big superstar to emerge from the top line of comics at the time. They didn’t have to wait too long as an artist made an immediate impact and gave the flagship title a whole new look. His name was Joe Madureira.

Madureira was named the artist on Uncanny X-Men in 1994. His work led to the success of the “Age Of Apocalypse” storyline as well as “The Trial Of Gambit” just to name a few. With a style all his own, Madureira quickly became one of the biggest artists in all of comics. In 1997, Madureira left Marvel to join up with an offshoot imprint of Jim Lee’s Wildstorm line known as Cliffhanger. Madureira joined Humberto Ramos (Crimson) and J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl) with a creator owned title “Battle Chasers” in 1998.

The fantasy-adventure book had much hype behind it but constant release issues with the series led to the last issue being published by Image in 2001! In that time, Madureira has gone on to different non-comic projects with a few returns to Marvel with “Ultimates 3” in 2007, “Avenging Spider-Man” in 2011 and “Inhuman” in 2014. However, fans have never stopped clamoring for more Battle Chasers. Image released The Battle Chasers Anthology in 2019 to huge reactions. With a fanbase still clamoring for more, an announcment was made that shocked and electrified fans…

Early in 2023, Image and Madureira announced that they were bringing the series back with the long-awaited Battle Chasers #10 (by Madureira and LUDO LULLABI). The wait is finally over! The book is in stores! Let’s take a deeper look at how the story fares after debuting 25 years ago, shall we!

BREAKDOWN: Madureira plays into the strengths of what makes this series such a beloved one with fans. The relationship between Garrison and Monika has always been combustible. Madureira focuses in on this for some great back and forth moments. The latest threats of the Martial Paladins are an interesting one. They come across to the reader as highly dangerous and ones that have a separate agenda all their own. Gully’s story didn’t get as much time in comparison (only 6 pages)but hit its’ key points. The dynamic with her and Sebastian works flawlessly to set up the forthcoming drama. As a “welcome back” issue, it does a great job for connecting with new and older readers of the series.

LULLABI steps in the art duties and delivers on fast moving, BIG action panels. The short sequence with them taking out Akiman delved into that frenetic pace. The moments with the Paladins hunting Garrison and Monkia establish the stakes very quickly. This leads into an amazing 2 page full panel spread closing out Garrison’s portion of the issue. Lullabi does a spectactular job catching Gully’s reactions to Sebastion’s manipulations. Ranging from anger to puzzled to defiant, the emotions display sold that time in the book and made up for the lack of pages. Great final panel to send things off into the next issue.

The saga of Battle Chasers resumes without missing a beat. With the action and drama building back up, it is a perfect time to add this series to your comic book collection.

KLIK KLIK BOOM #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast.

For this entry, we are jumping into a new series from Image Comics that reunites a team readers know from The Ride: Burning Desire. This series is sure to be one talked about on New Comic Book Day. Klik Klik Boom #1 by Doug Wagner, Doug Dabbs, Matt Wilson and Ed Dukeshire brings the mystery of Sprout and her unique vision of the world for a story that can’t be missed. Let’s take a deeper dive and peel back the layers of this intriguing tale, shall we?

Klik Klik Boom #1 by Doug Wagner, Doug Dabbs, Matt Wilson and Ed Dukeshire (Credit: Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins in New York City. Someone is leaving polaroid pictures in various spots throughout the city. One picture is that of a family celebrating a birthday with some cake at a restaurant. Readers see that there is a mysterious woman (known later as Sprout) taking pictures of the family outside the venue. It appears as she is trying to use the photos to communicate with the family but the photos are clearly not welcomed by the celebrating party. After being threatened, Sprout leaves but not before leaving a picture of the cake on the window.

From here, readers see Sprout walking down the street when she’s harassed by two men. The one smacks Sprout on her backside. She responds by staring at them followed by taking a picture. Leaving the pair, she walks by a man walking down the street and smacks him on his behind. If this wasn’t puzzling enough, the next action leaves many questions.

Sprout goes into her bag and draws a gun from a sea of Polaroids of a man readers find out later is her grandfather. With gun in hand, Sprout walks into a bank. With no vision inside, readers see shots fired and someone screaming. Suddenly Sprout walks out unscathed, picking up a dropped picture of her grandfather. This leads to a flashback where readers get a little insight into Sprout’s past 12 years prior.

In the present, a reporter named Serena Biggs is on the phone piecing together the mystery of Sprout. Readers find out what happened in the bank and how that is the tip of the iceberg behind a bigger conspiracy yet to be revealed.

What is found during Serena’s investigating? Who is a vested party of interest? How does Sprout figure into all of this? Readers don’t wait too long to bare witness to paths crossing and more questions raised. Just when the answers seem to appear, they get lost in the rising danger of Sprout’s world leading into a closing act that proves the enigmatic story of Sprout hasn’t even begun to be unveiled.

Klik Klik Boom #1 by Doug Wagner, Doug Dabbs, Matt Wilson and Ed Dukeshire (Credit: Image Comics)

BREAKDOWN: This mystery is one that will capture readers attention and not let go easily. Wagner presents Sprout as a lost soul in a big world. The initial interactions with the people of New York City comes across as awkward and curious. Keeping the bank scene hidden elevates the reveal of events later in the issue perfectly. The addition of Serena plays as a dual role for the readers. Serena is asking the questions they are thinking while trying to process what world she has now stepped into. The conversation when it is revealed why Sprout takes pictures is one of the noteworthy points of the issue. Wagner does a great job of keeping Sprout’s true motives elusive with mixing in surprise locations throughout the journey. There never is a loss of tension and wonder for the duration, leading into a strong final moment.

Dabbs and Wilson bring a certain mystique to the artwork for the book. The use of 5-6 panel pages gives a feel of the reader themselves are looking at the polaroids while moving thru the story. The bank sequence is a strong moment in the book. Using only a few wide panels, readers can sense the action taking place and the surprising fallout when Sprout leaves. The flashback time with Sprout and her grandfather gives the readers a solid idea of their quirky relationship without fully playing all the cards to what has transpired. This formula is shown against when Sprout is involved in an altercation. The use of small panels and bright colors tell just enough before switching gears. Superb closing visuals to lead into the next issue of what is sure to be a monster hit.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

From the opening page, there is a certain enigmatic feel that captures readers and never lets go. Wagner orchestrates a slow burn thriller brought to life by Dabbs and Wilson’s amazing visuals reflecting the gritty and mysterious world of Sprout. This is a must-have on New Comic Book Day.

For this entry, we’re taking a closer look at a brand new series/event on the Comixology Originals line that showcases a writing debut from someone who fans may know from another form of pop culture. From the band Scissor Sisters, Scott Hoffman (aka Babydaddy) kicks off his comic beginnings with a very eye-catching tale. NOSTALGIA #1 by Scott Hoffman, Danijel Žeželj, Lee Loughridge, and Steve Wands (On sale June 13th - Credit: Comixology originals)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story beings with a cover of “Musocity”, a music zine featuring Craig Mancini aka NOSTALGIA on the front page. The article breaks down his stage presence and the experience of watching him play. Things shift to NOSTALGIA on stage and the euphoric trance he keeps the crowd in while playing. In a flash, the crowd disappears and Craig is overlooking the city from his lavish apartment. Craig’s mood is that of despair and exhaustion looking at used to have been.

Craig’s roadie Lexi comes in the room and makes the impression Craig has fallen into a difficult time. Craig dismisses her and turns his attention elsewhere. The visuals readers see is a collage of the world Craig lives in. Much like today’s world, there is an assault of all forms of medias and opinions. Needing a break, Craig escapes into the dark city needing to clear his head.

Craig returns back to the Ziquara building and is passed along a package. From the deminer of the doorman, this isn’t the first time a package like this has arrived. Craig decides this time to accept it. Upon opening it, Craig finds an image of a shell, which sends Craig on a path to a life changing moment.

What is the symbolism of the package? Is Craig ready to find out what is behind these deliveries? Readers ride along as Craig maneuvers through the volatile landscape to reach a meeting place and a surprise he is not ready for. The final panel will raise some questions until the next chapter hits the digital shelf, so get ready.

NOSTALGIA #1 by Scott Hoffman, Danijel Žeželj, Lee Loughridge, and Steve Wands (On sale June 13th - Credit: Comixology originals)

BREAKDOWN: Hoffman presents a unique vision of life after music with the current issue. Craig comes across as a multi-layered character. Hoffman’s connection with being a musician brings a distinct approach when conveying Craig’s emotions after the spotlight is gone. Craig ranges from self-loathing to reluctantly bored with how things have now become. The small interaction with Lexi brings that right to the readers’ attention early. Even when he ventures out into the public, his attitude is one of loss. Only when he decided to take a chance with the package does it appear a spark got underneath Craig to do more. The current social climate plays a strong part in guiding the story. With the emotions of the public loud and aggressive, the toll it takes on Craig is evident. However, with the surprise at the end shifting gears, it will add a new dynamic to Craig that should be catching to see play out.

Žeželj kicks off the issue with a stunning portrait of how music has encompassed Craig and the crowd when he is on stage. The coloring done by Loughridge gives those panels an original feel that’s all its’ own. Craig’s venture into the city pops off the pages as the city itself has its’ own story to tell. The mannerisms of Craig feature how much he has fallen on a rough patch and the curiosity of the package actually gives him a weird speak. The journey to the meeting spot builds to a solid closing act, topped with a loud statement caping off a notable flashback time period. Great closing panel to send readers home and having them want to return for the next issue on.

FINAL POINT: 8 out of 10

After the music stops, when does life begin again? That is the question posed in the world of Craig Mancini. Hoffman, Žeželj and the team bring a powerful vision of a lost soul trying to find himself through solid writing and fantastic imagery. This is a book you don’t want to pass up checking out.

PHANTOM ROAD #4 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast.

For this entry, we’re diving further into the mystery surrounding Dom and Birdie’s highway to Hell in the pages of Image Comics’ hit new series. PHANTOM ROAD #4 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands picks up where the reluctant pair are heading now and the latest addition to the mix ended up after last issue’s shocking ending. Let’s not delay any longer and take a closer look, shall we?

PHANTOM ROAD #4 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Dom and Birdie’s paths crossed on a fateful night when a mysterious object turned their worlds upside down. Crossing over into a mirrored dimension with faceless figures coming for the powerful object, the pair is trying to make some kind of sense of everything. Last time readers saw them, they were running from the law after killing a faceless figure, who turned human shortly after.

The case is drawing more attention with the addition of FBI agent Theresa Weaver into the mix. Weaver starts putting things together and it appears there is a personal connection to the case. Unfortunately, Weaver is kidnapped from her hotel room by a masked assailant.

This issue picks up with Dom and Birdie still on the run (editor note: The pair wasn’t featured in issue #3). The conversation is small talk but reassures the readers that they still have a plan on what to do with the object.

The story shifts to the alternate dimension with a young girl standing in the path of the faceless. With a reassuring voice telling her to remain calm, she looks back at the pack before snapping back to our reality. The girl is actually FBI agent Theresa Weaver. Weaver is detained in an empty room. A masked man comes in and starts interrogating her.

What secrets are revealed during this conversation? What is “Project Jackknife”? Readers get more insight on the personal connection of the case to Agent Weaver, with information that even she doesn’t know. The final moments present more tension and uneasiness as the closing moments showcase all actions come with a grave cost.

PHANTOM ROAD #4 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands

PHANTOM ROAD #4 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands

BREAKDOWN: Lemire gives more balance to all the major players with the events of this issue. Dom and Birdie’s “partnership” is one that continues to be uneasy. Both have secrets in their pasts that block them from fully trusting the other. This plays well building towards one’s actions and the repercussions following it. The Agent Weaver portion of the book will be the one fans are most talking about. The interrogation levels new insight on the agent while giving the whole case a much bigger feel. Pacing worked well to give each story time to grow for a big impact before ending the issue.

Walta’s art doesn’t shy away from the fatigue wearing on both Dom and Birdie. Their expressions during their conversation paints a bigger picture of how they’re truly feeling in the moment. Agent Weaver’s portion of the book comes across blunt and to the point, much like the scene plays out. The panels demonstrate a solid back and forth with the questioning with well placed jumps to the past mixed in. There’s a gritty, dark feel throughout the pages which adds more layers to the deeper story at hand. Excellent closing panels to send readers on to the next issue.

PHANTOM ROAD #4 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands

PHANTOM ROAD #4 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The mystery grows deeper with secrets revealed and actions taken with grave consequences. Lemire, Walta and the team take readers down the supernatural road with excellent writing and art. You won’t want to miss this series at the local comic shops!
