For this entry, we’re taking another trip to the land of the supernatural in the pages of one of Boom Studios latest hit series! DAMN THEM ALL #3 by Simon Spurrier, Charlie Adlard, Sofie Dodgson, Shayne Hannah Cui, and Jim Campbell has introduced comic fans to Ellie Hawthorne and the mysterious task thrown upon her and how she’s surviving fulfilling a legacy with insurmountable odds. Two issues in and this book has taken readers on quite the journey.

Editor warning: this book has some panels that might be too mature for younger readers. That said, let’s jump into the latest chapter and see where Ellie and company take readers now, shall we?

The story thus far has been based around the death of Ellie's uncle Alfie. After his passing, Ellie has now stepped into the role of being the one to stop the 72 devils of the Ars Goetia from running crazy on society. Her mission is simple (per say): send them all back to Hell by any means. Ellie isn’t alone on this quest as she’s joined by Dora, an officer with a complicated past with Alfie. Last issue took readers on a ride with having Ellie confront Pruflas, a dark prince with some insight. The lasting effects of that conversation still weighs heavy on Ellie as a new threat has emerged.

This issue opens up with Ellie high on Hoama, a drug with potent power. Ellie is dealing with what went down with Pruflas. The informative figure tells of a stranger coming into contact with a magical coin. Stemming from the coin is a creature that looks to be a problem for Ellie down the road: another devil to contend with. Pruflas eludes to Hell becoming unsettled with disturbances causing things to be changed. Readers also find out some clues to Ellie’s past and how her uncle played a big factor in her youth. The imagery doesn’t hold anything back from demonstrating this. Dora, and Carlin, Ellie’s team on this journey are in the room as Pruflas divulges into a possible reason for Alfie being murdered. It is a big moment that will stick with Ellie after she comes down (and cleans up) from her Hoama experience.

From here, readers watch as individuals use their devils in violent ways. With the pressure mounting, Ellie and her team make their way to the location of a man by the name of Theo Bolster, a member of the 500 club. Readers will instantly recognize this character. When he invites Ellie, Carlin and Dora inside, the trio isn’t going to be ready for the revaltions he has to tell them. Pieces of the puzzle start forming but new ones arise as well. What information does Theo pass along? How does Ellie react to this? Plus, what about that final page? There will be much discussion about what transpires here with this latest chapter.

Spurrier keeps readers guessing with Ellie’s latest escapade. The meeting with Pruflas proves to be impactful for where Ellie’s mission is heading. Readers also see a flashback connecting how much her uncle has impacted her life. This plays off well with the major player to confront Ellie in the final act. Theo’s time in the story made for noteworthy scenes. The reveals of what his game is hits with readers and adds a great touch of drama for what’s to come.

Adlard doesn’t shy away from the tough imagery in this issue. From Ellie’s vomiting from Hoama to the brief flashback with her as a young child, the panels convey the serious matters at hand. The tone of the book is dark and unapologetic. Seeing the devils in action proved to define what kind of dangers Ellie will be facing as the series progresses. The final image will have fans very excited to see where the next chapter takes them.

FINAL POINT: Ellie Hawthorne’s world takes another fascinating turn in the pages of Damn Them All #3. Spurrier, Adlard and the team drop some clues to the mystery behind her uncle’s death and presents new threats on the horizon. The book has fantastic art and writing that will be a sure hit for anyone looking for a great supernatural read. Check it out on NCBD!

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #27 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter in the world of Erica Slaughter via Boom Studios. This has been a big year for the SIKTC universe with a successful spin-off (House Of Slaughter) making a lot of noise but the flagship book remains one of the best reads at the comic shops each time. Something is Killing the Children #27 by James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design continues to push Erica into the line of danger with threats attacking her on multiple levels. Coming off the heels of the monumental issue #25, the new arc is raping up speed quickly. Before we jump into this review, can we all take a moment to acknowledge the Dan Mora cover!

There’s a monster in Tribulation, New Mexico that Erica has re-emerged to take care of. Her presence has made the radar of the House of St. George who has unleashed Cutter to take care of Erica once and for all. Cutter has only just been attacking Erica but has struck the deepest cut with her murder of Erica’s ally Big Gary (see issue #25). Now recovering from her initial encounter with the monster, Erica is surviving with the help of Riqui, who is the reluctant “guardian” of Gabi, the sole witness to the monster’s initial killings.

This issue opens up to a flashback with Riqui talking with her girlfriend Fernanda. Fernanda is dying of cancer. She makes Riqui promise to look after Gabi after she’s gone. It’s an emotional sequence that will hit readers pretty hard. From here, the story shifts to Riqui making plans to take Gabi and Erica to the police station for protection. Erica overhears this and throws in a counter offer to handle the monster. This doesn’t sit exactly well with Riqui, but a resolution happens as they both are unaware what lies ahead. Erica is not ready to fight anything in her current state but isn’t going to let the monster win. Erica knows Cutter is lurking but not sure what her play will be.

Readers don’t wait long to see what Cutter’s up to. She makes a big move in her attempt to draw out Erica in Tribulation. After painting the narrative of how “evil” Erica is to the sheriff, Cutter unveils what’s next. Holy smokes, readers aren’t ready for what they see next. The final image…..GET READY! It will have fans on the edge of their seats waiting for the next chapter!

Tynion delivers a powerful opening with Riqui and her girlfriend. With everything we’ve seen thus far involving Riqui and Gabi, this moment puts so many extra emotions into their story. Seeing how Riqui is hurting watching her lover dying and flash forwarding to showcase her drive to keep Gabi safe blends perfectly. It’s counter balanced by the disturbing actions of Cutter. As readers have seen since her debut, Cutter is vicious and ruthless with her actions. This issue plants that idea up close to readers as her panel time displays how deranged she is and how much danger Erica is truly in. Pacing was never a problem here as the major plot points all connect for a fantastic read.

Dell’edera brings out the impact of Riqui and Fernanda’s talk with heartfelt emotion. The panels (with Muerto’s assist) will connect with the readers and does so much for the story if you’ve been reading since Riqui’s introduction. It’s extremely well done. From there, Erica and Riqui do have their moments in this issue, but nothing like the intensity and insanity that Cutter brings to this issue. No spoilers here but it’s a frightening set-up to display what’s she’s capable of. Readers have seen when she appears, nothing good comes from those panels. This issue has a 6 panel page that readers will see Cutter smiling about something happening. It’s almost a lost panel but it’s a subtle touch that conveys so much.

In case you’re just joining, in 1922, Hazel Crenshaw runs her family farm in New York with her sister Geraldine. Hazel is also dabbling in the alcohol business which is illegal at this time. Her business partner Frankie is helping her pay the bills but their work draws some unwanted attention. That comes from Jotham, a mobster that is more than just a man. Jotham is a vampire. He leads his gang to Hazel’s farm and kidnaps her sister in the melee. From here, Hazel is out for revenge and isn’t alone in her anger towards Jotham. A “Blood Oath” between Vampires and the organized crime families was broken by Jotham’s power play. Hazel, Walt (Geraldine’s boyfriend) and Sister Theresa, a “vampire hunter” who’s been training for this day, are en routre to Jotham’s warehouse. The crime families are on the way. The Vampire Council is heading there as well. Now, there is hell to pay and everyone is in the crossfire.

This issue opens up with a flashback to Hazel and Geraldine fending off a threat to the farm, From here, the pace speeds up to the warehouse and Geraldine lighting the match to start the fireworks. Hazel and her team make their way into the fray between the mob and Jotham’s army. The vampire council finds Jotham who unleashes his forces on them in a power play move. Readers had better buckle up as the action is fast and not stopping for anything. Who makes it out alive from the battles? Can there be business as usual after all Jotham did to damage relationships? Readers will have those answers plus a final image after the smoke clears that leads no doubt this tale is far from over.

Hart and Segura do not leave anything on the table with this finale issue. There is many moving pieces to keep track of. It never felt like anyone didn’t get enough page time to finish their story out. Geraldine’s story set the stage early for where the book was heading here. The issue had a “big fight feel” to it as every page seemed to build up the intensity more and more. The eventual Jotham/Sister Theresa run-in did not disappoint as well as Hazel navigating thru the melee to find her sister. The resolution won’t disappoint as the major players seem poised for further adventures. There weren’t too many lingering threads in the aftermath. The final parting image should have readers guessing at to what’s next for Hazel and company.

Eisma goes full throttle on this issue’s big moments. The fights pop off the page and bring an intensity to what’s about to unfold. The showdown readers have been waiting for didn’t falter. Seeing Geraldine navigate thru the inferno she created provided a break from all the furious action. The fallout images set the tone for what an event the melee was. The final moments of the book close out this chapter with a parting shot on where the characters are heading that fans can’t help but be excited about.

In case you’re checking this story out for the first time, Kenny and Ted are friends trying to find their way through high school in 1987. After coming across an old comic with a classic ad for “magic specs” that can grant wishes, the pair never expected the glasses to appear at their doorstep. Utilizing the shades’ powers, they both start using the powers for their own means. Things are going well until a bully (Bernard Slyman aka Skunk) comes across them in the woods looking for payback of an earlier incident. With one wish, the bully disappears and the pair’s lives would never be the same.

This issue kicks off with the pair running back home after the encounter. Ted was cut by the Bully’s knife and is tending to the would. Ted wants to destroy the glasses but Kenny sees it as a means to bring Skunk back. Ted vetoes this move. The discussion leads to Kenny to say about running away and almost slips up admitting his feelings for Ted. After trying to decide on a plan B for what’s coming with a missing high school student in a smaller town, Ted tries wishing Skunk came back. This wish doesn’t work.

Days go by and the town is now catching wind of Skunk’s disappearance. The pressure is starting to build on the pair. Manhunts are now out searching for him. There’s an investigation at the school which starts cracking the bond between Kenny and Ted. All of that pressure makes one of the pair make a wish that certainly didn’t go the way they planned. Readers will not be ready for the repercussions of the latest wish. Where do the pair go from here? Can their friendship survive this latest drama? The drama is now at a fever pitch with no signs of slowing down.

Great second issue. Booher pushes the pair’s friendship to the break with the fallout from their actions. Factoring in Kenny’s feeling for Ted only adds to the drama and choices made. Booher paces the issue out where readers can truly grasp the time of events. Skunk’s disappeance takes hold of the town and the emotions of those involved pour out. Seeing the young pair trying to navigate through the mess they made never loses its way. With the conclusion of this issue, it will be very interesting to see how the pair makes it through as friends and if the glasses’ powers are too strong to break from.

Shehan locks in on the retro energy with this issue. For being in the 1980’s, the look never sways away from that era. The moments that jump out in this issue carry the emotional weight of the tale perfectly. The 5 panel page of the initial discussion between Kenny and Ted oozes out the emotional burden the pair now carries. The town’s reaction is another big image here. For being a bully and even at one point, being recognized as a no-so-nice person., witnessing the town showing out to search adds another layer to an already impassioned filled issue. The final image drops a big exclamation point on what’s happening here and it proves to be a big win for the readers.

FINAL POINT: Specs #2 shows no sophomore slump with its dramatic tale. Booher, Shehan and the team keep applying pressure on the young pair and their actions with exceptional storytelling and art. The series is only just getting started but its’ one you won’t want to pass on for new comic book day.

The story opens up with a 19-year-old woman names Kacy Martin squaring up against some kind of monster in front of fellow students. The monologue breaks down there’s some kind of past and present happening in this situation when Kacy proactively goes after the monster. From here, readers are taken on a flashback to Kacy having breakfast with her mother. Readers witness that home life with Kacy and her parents might not be the best before she heads off to school and a “study group”. That group means a house party with her boyfriend T.J. and best friend Krissy. The music is loud and the beverages are rolling. Things are fine until Kacy wakes up from passing out on the couch.

Readers bear witness to a sequence of something nonhuman finding Kacy but to what extent is still unsure. The story shifts back to Kacy waking up and returning home…..but home isn’t exactly the same. Kacy thinks it’s Saturday when in turn, time has passed faster than she realized. Once Kacy arrives at school, she runs into T.J. and Krissy, but neither know who she is. What happened since the party? How come no one remembers Kacy? And where did that big monster at the beginning of the issue come from? Readers will have to start putting those puzzle pieces together and have another question raised on the final image from the issue before it’s all said and done. Get ready.

If you’re a new reader to the blog, we’re very big Cullen Bunn fans here. From his work on the latest run of Shadowman for Valiant Entertainment to Basilisk for Boom Studios, Bunn is known for doing fantastic work. Being the first issue, there’s much to start finding out about the character of Kacy, but there’s only a few layers peeled back to see what’s unfolding. Her story goes off into a frightening direction once she realizes her friends don’t know who she is. It is at said moment, the horror element hits the high note. Few pull this off better than Bunn. From a slow-burn build, the moment when Kacy realizes things are not right connects with readers instantly. Kacy has no real time to process this as another factor comes into play which throws more questions about her into the mix. Pacing kept everything moving forward and left a solid foundation to built this imaginative tale off from. There’s still a lot of mystery left to be deciphered here which is never a bad thing.

Bivens balances out the normalcy of Kacy’s life pre-party and the unusual changes post very well. Kacy’s “new world” makes quite the impression with the creature she’s fighting in the beginning of the issue. One thing to already pick up on reading this issue is to expect the unexpected. Bivens captures the worry and fear when Kacy realizes things are not what they seem when she returns home. It’s a brief moment in comparison to some of the other scenes in the book but it compliments Bunn’s writing to push it to the forefront. Imo, this is where the story really licked into gear. The final image leaves readers with a parting shot to keep them guessing until next issue.

For this entry, we’re taking a peek at the second issue of a brand new series for BOOM STUDIOS that made a huge debut last month. BEHOLD, BEHEMOTH #2 by Tate Brombal (Something is Killing the Children), Nick Robles (The Dreaming: Waking Hours), and Andworld Design picks up right where the cliffhanger ending set forth from an impressive and intense debut. The story centers around Grayson, a social worker grieving from the loss of his brother, and Wren, the only survivor of a gruesome family murder he visited earlier. Through the course of the first issue, readers see glimpses of another world where monsters seem to dwell. How this is all connected remains to be seen,but it is a factor that haunts Grayson from his past until now. At the conclusion of last issue, It appears as a cataclysmic event has occurred with Gray and Wren set into the future starting a new quest all their own. The quest: Save the world.

Where this issue starts is the time “After The Fall.” Wren and ray are making their way across a grassy field. Wren comes a Pika which she becomes fascinated with. As she chases the creature, a hawk swoops in and kills it. Wren’s reaction is pure anger and she morphs into a monstrous creature and kills the hawk. Only Gray’s command and staff appear to stop Wren, even if it takes a toll on him. As the pair advances on their quest, they encounter more creatures. They keep moving until they come across a militarized zone known as “Port Oregon.” While there, the pair try to sneak in unnoticed while gathering an item that could be a game changer. How this quest goes is anything but easy. Is there success for the pair or are there more issue lying ahead? Can Gray survive with what’s happening around him? Readers will not be expecting what happens next or what is presented with the final image of the book.

Brombel lays out fragments of what the future holds for the pair with a steady paced story within these pages. Seeing Wren unleashing the Behemoth was a big surprise when she became angry. What came off more shocking was the effect Gray’s mind was suffering throughout this issue. For all his efforts, his struggles became a focal point when they were progressing with their mission. Connecting the moments between both issues is going to be a fun ride for readers to decipher along with. The final moments will raise some questions but re-enforces there is a big mystery involving these two and will they make it to the end to figure it all out.

Robles welcomes readers to the new world post-fall with a new, visually brighter landscape to expand upon. Port Oregon introduced some new characters that gave some insight into how this new world is working. Very solid 2 page spreads to set up a few key moments in this issue. The one involving Wren unleashing Behemoth will be the one that stands out most to readers but the Port Oregon one gives a broader picture of how this area is working in the shadow of the fall. Wren’s reactions to all of this gave certain moments a bigger impact along with a final shot to close this portion of the story on. The series is just kicking into gear but there’s a great deal of intrigue to have reader’s attention for the long haul.

FINAL POINT: The adventure of Wren and Gray breaks down the new world they’re trying to fix, but at what cost? Brombel, Robles and Andworld Design keep the mystery moving with very solid writing and images to keep readers guessing to the secrets of the pair. The layers of the connection of past and future are just coming to light so readers will not want to pass up checking this book out on new comic book day.

The story centers around a haven in space for the “elite upper class” to flourish away with innovation from the rest of society fades away with a failing Earth. Readers are introduced to some of the team behind making this space haven run and be a utopia. The story then shifts to a character named Elise, who is the ships’ security liaison. Elise looks worse for wear from a rough night before. After being assisted by an AI named St Brigid to get ready, Elise is summoned to meet with the Raulssons to help solve an alleged robbery. using the AI at hand, Elise cracks the case and finds the missing property.

From here, Elise meets with Detective Sergeant Leona Pritchard who has been brought to the station to investigate a grizzly murder. The feeling being portrayed is that Elise is not qualified to solve this case and needed help. The victim is CFO Alberto Fairmilk, which there appears to be a cover-up going on not to alarm the other residents on the ship. Elise and Leona search the crime scene and readers witness how violent this murder was. Elise breaks away to recompose her thoughts. What happens next will catch readers off guard! Another murder has happened! Who is the victim? How did it happen? With a rising body count, how does Elise progress from here? There is much to break down from the final act that readers will be locked in for waiting for the next chapter.

Gailey sets up a strong debut issue keeping readers on edge from start to finish. Elise comes across as a character in over her head but making the most of the situation she’s in. The banter between her and Leona worked to show that even with the inexperience, Elise is showing she can figure this case out as well. St Brigid’s commentary played off well as a small dose of comedic relief but giving more mystery to what’s starting to unfold. The mystique of the ship is one readers is one with so many possibilities that readers can’t escape from. Pacing kept everything moving so when the big closing act hit, readers were hit with the shocking moments perfectly. Excellent introduction issue.

Kangas delivers on presenting a futuristic mystery with many layers involved with it. Seeing how Elise is coping with working on the ship gave a bigger understanding to her character. This played well into the final series of events of the issue. Kangag didn’t hold back on the gruesomeness of the crimes unfolding. Those visuals established how dangerous those threats are and how this is taking a toll on Elise. The rest of the characters introduced have their moments to stand out and gives readers a solid foundation to where this story is going from here. The final moments of the book put a huge exclamation point on the issue with a full page vision to drive home the danger which lies upon the ship.

In case you’re just joining in, this story centers around a brutal murder in Utah in 1891. Marshall Holt, a legendary lawman, is assigned to the case before he retires. When investigating, Holt is led back to the town of one of his most terrifying case: Canary. It is in Canary that Holt crossed paths with Hyrum Tell, a psychopath who’s heinous activities have scared the bravest of lawmen. The images of the children Tell killed in the flashback last issue give a true indication of what evil Holt was fighting against.

Upon his return, Holt meets up with Edison Edwards (or Ed-Ed), & Mabel Warren, daughter of Canary founder Chester Warren, as they investigate a cave that may hold the key to solving the case. The cave has its own dark history as well being the spot where Chester and some miners were killed. With the use of Edward’s Sonotron, the trio investigate the water levels of the cave. Their findings come as a shock to all as voices are heard saying “WE’RE STILL DOWN HERE!!!”

This issue opens up with Canary Mayor Gem using the Sonotron to investigate about the voices heard in the cave. Meanwhile, Holt, Edwards and Warren make their way to an abandoned house that Chester used as a headquarters for a group known as “The Global Geological & Divination Society 1081” or House 1081. Inside the house, there may be more clues to solving the reason behind the grizzly murders of the first issue. As the three move throughout the house, they dive deeper into the story behind the “Canary Evolution” theory and brace for some massive reveals.

All that said, one of the biggest shock surprises is what Mayor Gem pulls up from the cave with the Sonotron’s rope … or should I say who? The fallout from this moment is big. Even with this reveal, readers are 1000% NOT READY for the final page of what closes this issue. What do the trio find at House 1081 and what makes Canary so special? What came out from the mine thanks to Mayor Gem and WHAT ABOUT THAT LAST PAGE! Get ready for another can’t miss issue in this series!

Leave it to Snyder to keep dropping surprise after surprise after surprise this issue. Readers will have much to process with the two main stories happening here. The mystery behind House 1081 made for excellent drama as Holt starts pulling back the curtain on the secret of the murders. There’s a quiet moment in the book that connects everything with Holt’s past and present. Snyder spins that into the story perfectly so when the emotional impact hits, readers will feel its’ weight.

The other main story is Mayor Gem’s discovery. Snyder progresses that storyline much like the “canary Evolution” formula. There are any twists and turns with this plot that readers witness the growth into the final form (last page) and can’t help but be blown away. Excellent work pacing these big moments out where none overall the other.

Panosian bestows some amazing visuals throughout this issue. The atmosphere created by the art adds layers of tension and uncertainty as Holt ad company try finding answers. It plays off the writing flawlessly. Mayor Gem’s find at the mine is a full page shocking moment that will connect with every reader. It’s balanced out but the attention to details within House 1081. Later in the book, there’s a scene where Holt is looking at some framed pictures. Panosain makes those panels stand out with great detail and how it connects to a major reveal hits all the marks. With all these fantastic visuals to witness, Panosain drops a lasting image to close this chapter out that fans will be buzzing about.

In case you’re jumping in now, Ellie Hawthorne’s life has become way more complicated following the death of her uncle Alfie. With his death, the 72 devils of the Ars Goetia have now been freed from their damnation. It’s up to Ellie to send them back to where they came from by any means necessary. The first issue was an in your face welcome to Ellie’s world with magic in the air and questions galore to solve.

This issue opens up with a flashback to Dora, the New Orleans officer who is working with Ellie on figuring out what happened to Alfie. During her time on the force, she’s shown handling a school shooter and her direct way of defusing the situation. Dora’s tactics lead the shooter to kill himself and Dora is removed from the force. From this, Dora meets a stranger in a bar whom she connects with: Alfie Hawthorne. From here, Dora and Ellie start breaking down the recent events and covering the tracks of the massacre they survived in the first issue.

The story now shifts to Dora confronting mobster Frankie Wax, whom Ellie is now working with to stop the devils. After a brief meeting, Ellie and Dora meet up again to start putting pieces together bout what is going on. Unfortunately there’s no rest for the wicked as the magical element shifts again, prompting Ellie to get some help in dealing with this latest move. Who is now drawn into the field? What possible impact can they make? Does Ellie get more information about Alfie? There might not be time to process all the moving parts as the final panel will have readers guessing what is going to happen now!

Spurrier delivers on another strong issue of writing. Dora’s introduction was well-crafted to explain her character and seeing the dynamic play out with Ellie moving forward should be a treat for readers. The journal pages left by Alfie explaining the new characters in the issue is a great add. With so many new players being introduced, the quick one page read helps tremendously in getting an idea of what they’re about. Ellie continues to be an interesting character to watch as she’s written with varying flaws but still trying to make sense of whats happening here.

Adlard balances out the supernatural with the real world with impeccable skill. Dealing with the magical entities popping up throughout the story, Adlard keeps things grounded to where they don’t stand out for wrong reasons. They all fit right in for creating a unique vision of Ellie’s world. Seeing the emotional tale of Dora’s background play out was another intense chapter in this story. There truly is something special happening within this story.

Final Point: Excellent continuation from the explosive first issue. Spurrier, Adlard and the creative team start breaking down the world of Ellie Hawthorne with strong character moments mixed in with supernatural elements. The story is just getting started but DAMN THEM ALL has been checking all the boxes for what makes a must read comic. Don’t miss this issue on New Comic Book Day at the LCS.

In case you’re just hearing about this series, Hazel Crenshaw is running the family farm in 1922 New York. During this period, it is the era of prohibition when selling alcohol was illegal. However, Hazel dabbles into the outlawed profession as a way to make end’s meat. Being in this line of work draws some much unwanted attention and uneasy alliances. Being in business with organized crime isn’t something that goes easy for Hazel. As she navigates thru this world, her business partner Frankie mentions more danger is coming. This danger turns out to be a Vampire gang led by Jotham, who attack the farm for the alcohol and kidnap Hazel’s sister Geraldine.

From here, readers have been taken on a trip of Hazel trying to get her sister back. They also seen Jotham go into business for himself after a “blood Oath” was made between the vampires and crime families to preserve the alcohol business. Jotham thinks the deal isn’t very beneficial. This doesn’t sit well with the Vampire Council, who Uzziah is representing when he is brought to Jotham by Carlo, one of the mobsters for a meeting. When the meeting goes south, Carlo is detained and Uzziah is killed.The odds are stacking up badly against Hazel and Geraldine’s boyfriend, Walt. walt carries much self doubt so his help isn’t really felt to be enough. Luckily, Hazel has an ally to fight back in Sister Theresa, who’s been training to stop the vampires since she was born. It might not be enough as Jotham now knows they’re on the move and sends his minions to eliminate them once and for all.

This issue opens up with the council is sent a clear message from Jothan that he’s not working for anyone any more.the council addressing Jotham’s response to the council condemning his actions: the severed head of Uzziah! They demand that Jotham be killed. All the while, Jotham has made moves to a warehouse now preparing for the eventual war coming. With him in the warehouse is Geraldine, who’s being kept alive as a pawn to be used later. Jotham rallies his troops for the battle coming and makes an example out of Carlo. Carlo is released to the mob with a wooden stake and stabs Jotham, to no effect. The receipt Carlo gets is losing his head violently.

How did that happen?! With the trio in pursuit by Lehi, Jotham’s right hand man, will they make it to the warehouse in time? What happens when the crime meets the supernatural now that players have been taken off the board? And what about the final image? Get ready for all those answers as the series prepares to enter last call next issue.

There’s a lot to breakdown here. Hart and Segura shine some light on Jotham and how far he’s grown in his belief of his plan. Making the calculated moves has shown how vicious he is in winning this game. The example made of Carlo will catch readers off guard but it helps cement how dangerous Jotham has grown in such a short amount of time. It’s well placed in the story by the writers. All the actions have led to this point but Carlo’s death was the exclamation point needed. Hazel’s group gets their moments in this issue especially with Lehi, but this issue belongs to Jotham. That’s not a bad thing as Hazel’s tale has been established by now. Seeing the fruition of Jotham’s plans is what readers will take away here an be amped up for the finale.

Eisma doesn’t hold back on Jotham’s ruthlessness. Seeing in how he disposes of Carlo make quite the statement to readers. Another moment that jumps out from the art is the character moments with Walt this issue. Seeing how reluctant he is on himself to being given some confidence made for excellent character work. Proof of thisis shown later in the issue, but Eisma does capture that emotion of someone forced out of their comfort zone due to the situation they’re in. The build to the final page stands out to cap off this chapter in the story. You can’t help but be excited for what’s coming.

Final Point: The major places are set for what will be an epic conclusion to the story of vampires in prohibition. Hart, Segura, Eisma and the creative team set the table for a conclusion that has “big fight “ feel written all over it. The series has had fantastic writing and art to complement the imaginative take it’s been driving. With one issue left, make sure to get caught up on this series on Comixology.

The story kicks off with two people bound and gagged inside a deprecated house. Underneath them is plastic cause “Messes cause Stresses” per a voice of a narrator in the background. That voice turns out to be a sweet old grandmother. However, there is nothing nice and sweet about her as she kills the pair with a chainsaw! This is classic horror storytelling with a dash of dark humor mixed in.

While this is happening, four friends (Haiden, his sister Gabby, girlfriend Haley and Liz) stop at a gas station trying to find their way to the beach. Their GPS (and their phones) aren’t working so being lost on a dark and gloomy night isn’t ideal for anyone. They ask for help from someone “working” there but get little for their efforts: A raise of the arm and point. As they drive away, the worker dissolves as a zombie would, meaning the friends night is only going to get worse. As the drive down the road, it becomes more narrow and narrow until its a dead end. Ironically, a flat tire happens laving them stranded. “Luckily”, there’s a certain nearby house that a certain grandma is just waiting to “help” them.

As they go inside, there’s no working phone to call for help. However, there is a handyman who will stop by in the morning to take a look at the car. The foursome head inside for some comfort food and conversation with Hazel, the grandmother. As the evening progresses, so does the danger and fears. Readers see what happens when guests don’t mind their manners. What happens after dinner? Will one of the four not make it thru the night? And is there any help truly on the way? Readers will have those answers and more with a great kick-off to this story.

Dunford and Radford set the table for a well balanced serving of traditional horror with dashes of well-timed humor mixed in for balance. Hazel is everything you would expect on the outside for a horror antagonist. The writing captures her manical ways while she’s celebrating her attacks. There’s certain quirks she does that make for some memorable scenes. The “Elbows off the table” is prime example of this. Events move pretty quickly and not gonna lie, I laughed out loud at the ending with who shows up. No spoilers here, but it worked on many levels and Gabby’s comment to close out was perfect. The team truly enjoys what they do here and it shines thru the pages.

Balando’s art really brings out the creep and gore of the tale being told here. The imagery is dark and brooding when it needs to be. It’s also a credit to the coloring of Jasen Smith. No punches are pulled when Hazel does what she does. The teens that she encounters react as one would expect. There’s one notable scene involving teeth that illustrates this perfectly. Once the story gets down to business, Balando amps up the intensity of the panels. There’s a different to them when Hazel strikes much like horror movies build to that fever pitch before the payoff. Just wait for the ending sequence to. It segways nicely to set up the next chapter of an already wild series of events unfolding.

Final Point: EAT, SLAY LOVE! The team behind “Pocus Hocus” brings their magic over to a traditional horror tale and amp it up to 100. Readers (no the guests) are in for a treat seeing Hazel bring the terror with excellent writing and art sending them down their dark path into trying to survive the night in one piece. Make sure to keep an eye out for this and Pocus Hocus Soulless Edition wherever you can find them.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re picking up the pieces of the latest tale of Erica Slaughter in the pages of one of the best comics on the market! Something is Killing the Children #26 by James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design from Boom Studios ushers in a brand new status quo after last issue’s heartbreaking moment. It’s one I’m still not over after reading the issue a few times!

Before we deep dive into this issue, there’s only a few hours left to back James Tynion’s (along with PK Colinet, and Elsa Charretier)’s Kickstarter movie, “Room Service.” This should be a big hit when t’s released so don’t miss out on your chance to get on board now! Erica Slaughter’s re-emergence hasn’t gone without its fair share of problems. After re-surfacing in Tribulation, New Mexico hunting down a killing monster, Erica has been being hunted by The Order of St. George, who have sent the sadistic Cutter after her. The case hasn’t gone smoothly as the lone witness Gabi, hasn’t been very cooperative and brought Erica into the direct line of the creature. Erica barely escapes but is wounded in the process. All the while, Cutter makes the first big blow to Erica, killing her friend and confident Big Gary. The scene from last issue hit readers in all the emotions and leaves Erica in a broken state.

This issue picks up with Erica recuperating from her injuries in Riqui’s (a bartender and reluctant “guardian” of Gabi) parents place. She’s bruised and not opening up about what she encountered with the monster. While this is happening, Gabi is bonding with Riqui’s brother Johnny. The siblings clearly have issues with each other. Gabi is left by herself and is asked not to see Erica. Gabi doesn’t listen to this advice and sees more than she bargains for. Gabi overhears Erica’s assessment of current events. The future doesn’t sound so good for anyone.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Carter Thomas calls Riqui about the scene Erica and the monster left behind. While this is going on, a certain figure has made their way to Tribulation: Cutter! What she does next will set the tempo for the next round of her hunt of Erica Slaughter. Will Erica survive all the forces surrounding her now? Readers will have much to process with the new playing field set.

Tynion hits the ground running with building up the story after last issue’s epic goodbye of Big Gary. Erica is broken and latching on to whatever she can. This doesn’t come off as a good plan but Tynion showcases her dealing with grief by going head first into completing the plan. It makes for a natural emotional response to what has happened. The rest of the cast does their part to elude to more things to come but nothing outshines Erica’s dealing what’s transpired. Cutter makes a big entrance and tightening the hold she’s forming on Erica. Cutter comes off as making this job more personable that it has to be and this will work wonders for the eventual pay-off.

Dell’edera paints the picture of Erica’s pain splendidly as this new story takes over. Erica’s tough demeanor covers up the pain she’s feeling. Dell’edera’s stone-faced expressions for Erica drive that element home for readers. Cutter’s tale stands strong on its’ own as well. The encounter with Sheriff Carter made for a unique dynamic to where her story is heading. Cutter’s demeanor reflects how vicious she is about her assignment. The art portrays how much she enjoys what she’s doing and that’s a scary notion to comprehend. The other role players make their marks too but this issue belongs to Erica and the next phase of her life.

Final Point: Erica Slaughter’s road forward starts with a strong issue laying the new groundwork out. Tynion, Dell’edera, and Muerto blaze the new trail with excelling character moments along with convincing art to sell the point that Erica’s journey back is only just beginning. make sure to check this issue out at the local comic shops this week and sign up for the “Room Service” kickstarter before its too late.

The story begins with a frame showcasing a missing person names Bernard Slyman aka Skunk on the back of a milk carton. Skunk has been apparently missing since 1987. The frames shift to a man holding the carton and feeling some remorse. He takes the carton back to a box in the attic entitled “Zach’s Comics.” Inside this box is an old comic advertising “The Phenomenal Gamma Ray”’s magic specs which “grant wishes”.

From here, the story shifts back to 1987 where two teen friends, Kenny and Ted are just trying to talk about some old comics that Kenny’s brother had left behind. The conversation halts when they are bullied by Skunk and some of his friends. A fight breaks out and Ted takes the blame for it when Kenny said he did it. Later, the boys meet up and start talking about the old comics again. The questions became “What would you wish for?” Both boys had different wishes that they would like to see come true. The next morning, a package is left at Kenny’s door: The magic specs from the comic.

Neither Kenny or Ted ordered the glasses but decided to test out if they work. The answer surprises all involved. As the saying goes “With Great Power comes Great responsibility".” For this tale, the boys find out not every wish should be answered. What does this mean in relation to the milk carton? What did the boys wish for? Readers will get some answers but more questions raised with a final image to talk about.

Booher sets up an intriguing mystery that fans will not want to miss. Tying the story back into the 1980’s, the writing reflects that time-frame well. The boys are the nerdy outsiders trying to find their way in the social settings. The bullies are what you would expect from that period. Booher showcases how fast things can go off the tracks as the boys start playing around with the specs. Their stories are only just beginning but readers will have a strong sense of how their friendship will be tested as this story unfolds.

Shehan captures the 1980’s vibe throughout this issue. From the Nintendo Entertainment System in Kenny’s room to the “fashion” of the bullies, Shehan nails that time period with an assist from Roman Stevens’ coloring. The book had a distinct retro feel which worked to give readers a true sense of how long the disappearance has been. The opening scenes felt very gritty and dark in comparison. There’s lots to enjoy from the first chapter.

Final Point: Specs #1 builds the foundation to a darker mystery that readers won’t be able to escape. Booher, Shehan and the team throw it back to the 1980’s with an engaging opening start to a darker and scarier road ahead for the two teens trying to see the truth of the new glasses. This issue opens up with a funeral for a fallen officer named Liam. His brother, Grayson, is standing over his grave. During this moment, Grayson has a flashback to when he and his brother were young kids. From hiding out in a tent, the boys talk about a better future. Thier talk is interrupted by someone. Grayson is apologizing but Liam doesn’t seem too phased by what’s to come. As he opens the door to the outside, Readers are shown that things are drastically different than the simple campout. There are creatures and figures of mystery walking about in a whole new world. Grayson is snapped back to reality by Liam’s former partner Kavita.

Their conversation eludes to more going on here (at least from Grayson’s POV). Kavita brushes it off and orders Grayson to get some sleep and get right. Shortly after this, Grayson is back to work as a social worker. While checking in on the Wyatt Family, Grayson meets a young girl by the name of Wren. What should have been a routine check spirals into something more as later that night, the Wyatt Family are all found dead except Wren. What happened to the family? How does this connect (if at all) to Grayson? What is Wren’s secret and what does the final act represent? Readers are left with questions that they will be very invested with finding out the answers to.

Brombal doesn’t delay in throwing in the horror aspect with this story. Right from the funeral, readers start delving into the world of Grayson’s visions. Nothing is tipped off right away so there’s a sense of mystery to what is happening. Is it real or all in Grayson’s head? Brombal scatters clues throughout the issue that will leave readers guessing. The mystery of Wren is another dynamic that stuck out. Her story just started to unfold but there is a connection with Grayson and her. How that will play out is anyone’s guess at this stage. The closing act won’t bring closure but brings more intrigue to an already imaginative tale.

Very impressed by Robles work with this issue. Breaking down the worlds Grayson sees & giving each a different feel played out well. With the use of Red as the color scheme of Grayson’s visions, readers could feel that these were not welcomed places to be in. The facial expressions for Grayson and Wren added weight to the scenes taking place. They were already set up perfectly by Brombal, but with Robles art, they really drew more emotions of the reader to the story at hand. It’s a strong connection to feel what these characters are going thru (and this is only issue #1?!). The ending shot will have fans talking. There’s much to be excited about with this series.

Final Point: Brombal and Robles usher in the horror and mystery with a impressive debut issue. Grayson’s world has only begun to peel back the layers of the story but with the high stakes of the end of the world mixed in with his own sanity, it makes for a compelling tale not to miss! What is all the hype about this issue you ask? Considering Adlard was the longtime artist on a book you might have heard of called “The Walking Dead”, that’s gonna make some noise. Factor in the rest of the creative team & there’s something big happening here. Let’s take a deeper dive into the debut and see, shall we?

The book opens up with a moment between Ellie and her uncle Alfie. The scenes (from Ellie’s point of view) shows how she is being taught magic. Obviously, this never comes easy and readers see how her early supernatural struggles play out. It closes on a fun scene as something is conjured up. However, that’s when the good times appear to end.

After a stop in the book, readers are taken into present day as they are now witnessing Alfie’s Funeral. An eclectic group of characters show up to pay their respects. It’s not exactly who you would think would attend but it gives the readers some insight into how respected and powerful Alfie really was. There is an exchange between a mobster (“Frankie Wax”) and a mysterious female during the ceremony. This transfers over to the post gathering. The female in question shifts from Frankie to look for Ellie. When they finally meet, their time is interrupted by thugs looking for Frankie.

At this stage, the situation goes completely off the rails. Readers won’t expect what comes next. The events take Ellie on a crazy path where she will have to fill in for her Uncle and become a problem solver. Can she step up to the task? What was unleashed in the results of her uncle’s passing? There’s a lot happening within these pages and is capped off by a solid final parting shot to raise more questions.

Very good first issue.In case anyone isn’t familiar with Spurrier’s work, he’s done Hellblazer in the past. That is a big plus when you have to write involving the supernatural. Ellie Hawthorne hits the ground running being an interesting character to watch. Spurrier writes her as someone finding the way out of her uncle’s shadow and into her own path. There’s many new characters that just scratched the surface of this story. That said, it will take another issue or two to see who plays a serious role in this tale. Nothing bad with that as this issue primarily focused on Ellie, Frankie Wax and a mysterious officer from New Orleans. Pacing was fine and the story covered a lot of ground. Cliffhanger ending will keep many readers engaged for next issue

Adlard brings a unique style to this book. Balancing the supernatural to the normal life can be difficult but with these pages, it works well. There’s no bigger moment of this than the Wake after the burial of Alfie. The events mesh well. The actions scenes jump out and the effects of the “supernatural party crashers” stand out with the difference in coloring (credit to Dodgson and Cui). Even with the book grounded in normacy, Adlard and company present Hawthorne’s daily life with a symmetry all its own.

Ellie Hawthrone brings readers along for her entry into the family business as Spurrier, Adlard and the team set her up for quite the journey moving forward. The story of Edwin Slaughter has been a fascinating tale to say the least. Edwin isn’t a hunter for the Order of St. George, but he has a unique skill set that he’s been challenged to examine a situation of dead bodies washing up to shore on a camping site in Lake Michigan. After combing the area, Edwin has been perceiving this case with a new way of thinking. His actions have led him to sea with his brush, Hermes. On this quest, the memories of his mother’s passing come back to the forefront. There is much he (along with the readers) have had to process. Unfortunately, time is not on their side as the true reason for the mystery has been revealed.

This issue opens up with some of the boys camp telling “Ghost Stories” when one brings up Edwin’s tale. Their depiction of Edwin is that he was a weird loner that stood out. Edwin’s tale goes to the boat with Hermes now with a new form. The children are recapping the stories they have with Edwin on the boat and now seeing that it’s a DRAGON that has been behind these bodies washing up to shore. How does Edwin handle this situation. The manner is something that isn’t completely out of character. Edwin does things differently than anyone else. The overall resolution will leave readers very satisfied as the story plays into its strengths. Plus , NO ONE is ready for the final image to wrap up this tale.

Tynion and Johns close this chapter with a vision that I wasn’t expecting them to go with. telling Edwin’s stories through the eyes of the cap-goers was a great trick to use. Edwin Slaughter has been a complicated character to say the least. The closing chapter doesn’t disappoint with Edwin’s uncanny traits being what solves this mystery. The pacing builds towards the big moments exceptionally well. Tying up all the loose ends worked with leaving some things open for interpretation. The story overall was something and really popped out from just a normal mystery. There’s one scene that I can imagine will be getting questioned for all the right reasons, but the team closed the story out on a high note.

Cadonici closes out this chapter with some fantastic visuals. seeing the monsters brought to life had the big impact needed to blow off the tension built. The kids sitting around the campfire and their mannerisms was a great take. Their interpretation of events came across strong and even took the high drama closing to another level. The third act of this issue concluded things properly. The emotional told taken on all involved was there. The final image will have people talking and ends things as the way it needed to: a different perspective that hasn’t been shown thru anyone else’s eyes quite like Edwin’s.

Final Point: House Of Slaughter’s second story hits the finish line with a satisfying conclusion. Tynion, Johns, Cadonici and the team take some chances with how the issue is set up but pays off big. The creativity shown here caps off a different look and feel to a story that was anything but ordinary. Don’t miss picking up this book from the local comic shop this week!

In case you are not familiar with this series, The character of Mercy is recruited into a war with monsters, who are monster hunters squaring off against creatures conjured by Nazi evil. This issue (and season) is focusing on Becky (who debuted in season 3) and Ratmir, an ally of Mercy since season 1. The pair is traveling thru Rumania when they encounter a spirit crossing their path. The spirit informs them that they have stumbled upon the Forrest Of Silence, and their end is near. This revelation brings back forgotten memories from Ratmir as readers see a heartbreaking tale from his past. The pair doesn’t have much time to process as they move to leave the forest. Chasing after the spirit, the pair sees a young child and pursue them in finding a way out of the forest. As with all good intentions, this doesn’t go according to plan. The pair is led to a gingerbread house in the middle of seemingly nowhere but a group of children. Once inside the house, the true terror begins.

What transpires next takes the story into many different directions. A new character makes their play on the pair. Overseeing from afar, it appears as this new player might have a trick of two up her sleeve. How does this all tie into Ratmir? While readers will get clarification on that questions, they won’t be ready for the big revelation involving Becky! More answers are revealed while more questions get asked. Rest assured, once the game changing revelation is dropped, nothing will be the same. How this story resolves itself will get readers very excited to see where the pair goes from here with all this information.

This was my first introduction into the Ask For Mercy tale and I was very impressed with what I’ve read. Starkings plays off Becky’s innocence with Ratmir’s grizzled past very well. They are an odd pairing in many ways. Seeing how they wind up in their dangerous situation is noteworthy. Becky’s youthful wonderment plays into Ratmir reliving his past enough to be caught off guard. However, no moment hits more that Becky’s secret. Once that reveal unfolds, from here on out, nothing will be the same. It was great storytelling to keep longtime readers off guard. For new ones, it’s solid narration to what’s happening in this world. Th ending comes quick but after the reveal, it’s paced ong enough to let fans assess what just happened and prep for the next issue.

Harding’s art works well in this fantasy world. The fantasy aspects popped form the start. The spirit and its’ surrounding ghosts impact quickly as to what the lead pair will be dealing with. Showing Ratmir’s past went into a different style which meshed very well with the story in the present. Even the sadness of Ratmir’s face in wolf form spoke volumes. Becky’s reactions to the antagonist at hand factored in nicely to where her big reveal felt like a Huge Moment. The ending’s bright coloring sold the image for being a sign of hope for what lies ahead. Excellent work all around.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter of a second wave “Scottober” comic from the team over at Best Jackett Press for Comixology Originals. The line has been such a big success that there was an announcement at New York Comic Con that the deal with Comixology has been extended! This is huge news for comic fans because in the short span of about a year, this line has hit on all marks with fantastic stories like The “Last Ride” Of Marshall Holt in 1891 Utah.

Marshall Holt’s last ride has been one to captures fan’s attention from the start and never let go. When a seemingly good boy commits a horrific murder, Holt’s investigation leads him to a haunting familiar place. It also leads him back to one of his most terrifying adversaries in Hyrum Tell. Tell’s actions have chilled Holt to the bone and no matter the time away, that encounter still frightens. This issue kicks off with a reminder of how dangerous and maniacal Tell’s actions were. The bodies of the children Tull has killed have been found. The scene pulls no punches. Holt’s reaction is one that someone with his character should have. Struggling to find the right thing to do has been something Holt has been challenging himself with. The resolution is one that plays a factor later in this story.

From here, Holt joins Edison Edwards (or Ed-Ed), a rock doctor & Mabel Warren, daughter of the founder of Canary to search for the mystery at the cave. For this trip, Edwards has brought a Sonotron with him to decipher the water levels in the mines. Once arriving at the cave’s entrance, our trio finds that they are not alone. When members of the Paiute Tribe approach & try destroying the Sonotron, Holt engages in an intense stand-off with a warning issued to him and his team. The message is loud and clear with an object presented that will catch readers attention for sure. One would think this is the biggest shock in the issue, but no one is ready for what they uncover after leaving the mine. That final image is going to haunt readers with fear and anticipation for the next chapter.

Talk about a game changing moment in the series! Snyder perfectly executes a fantastic exclamation point to this issue with that final shot! Before that moment, the conversation with Mabel explaining her father’s theory of “Forms” stands out. It’s am interesting idea that has lingered around this series since the beginning. Holt’s character evolution on this final case features the various forms he’s gone thru. The banter between Mabel and Holt is executed well as hearing Holt come to terms with how he’ being perceived was a solid add to his character. This issue’s pacing was worked in magnificently. Between the dialogue and getting inside Holt’s mind-frame, the big moments never lost its’ emotional pull. I can’t stress enough: Just WAIT for that final panel shot! Excellent work.

Panosian’s art continues to shine thru the pages of this story. With much dialogue being said between Holt, Mabel and Edwards, the reactions made by those characters will catch the reader’s attention. Going back to the conversation between Mabel and Holt while Edwards is off with his machine, Panosian dives right into Holt’s energy of a Marshall on his last case while Mabel pushing his buttons on what is really going on: He’s at the end of the line. The introduction of the Paiute Tribe to their arrival at the cave gave for another strong point of drama for this chapter. The creative team balances Holt’s world to his legacy without missing a beat.

Final Point: Snyder, Panosian & the creative team ramp up the tension and fear with another incredible issue. The saga of Holt’s last ride transforms with new elements in play that have only scratched the surface of what evil he looks to be facing before riding off into the sunset. This book is always a must-read so make sure you don’t miss it when it debuts on Comixology Originals this week!

The saga of the Chimera has been quite the horrifying tale. Five individuals with powers based off the five senses road free leaving death and destruction in their wake. In one certain case, Hannah is left behind after the Chimera kills her family on one of their ventures. Fueled by revenge, she embarks on a crash course to stop them by any means, if if she dies in the process. Thru the course of this story Hannah has held her own and been assisted by Regan, one of the Chimera who defects from the group to help Hannah in a form of forgiveness for her actions. With the endgame forming, Vanessa emerges as the lone member left of the Chimera waiting in the wings. Lurking around these characters is Barret and the Faithful, the worshipers of the Chimera who are playing their own game along the way.

Last issue was the calm before the storm. Hannah has now made a deal with Barret to get to Vanessa. Regan has been cut off from Hannah and sits back watching the final stand unfold. Barret leads Hannah to the campsite of the faithful where Vanessa is waiting. After decimating the faithful, Vanessa is primed and ready to go. The battle is everything you would expect it to be, with Regan and Barret watching in the wings waiting for the winner. Readers will get their money’s worth with this fight. All is answered with a conclusion fitting for where this story has gone.

Bunn finishes this tale with a resounding knockout punch. The pacing of this series has been one of its strong features. With last issue being focused on the build, the finale wastes no time ramping up the tension with the opening battle. Vanessa is back to her most ruthless while Hannah emerges as the vengeful protagonist leaving it all on the field of battle. The other side story carrys weight but feels as a complement to the overall main event. The issue closes with an ending that felt organic and fits into the mold of this series. Nothing came across as over-the-top. It’s an emotional close but one that will leave readers very pleased.

Scharf holds nothing back form the violence the series has been known for. Hannah versus Vanessa IS the fight fans have waited for. Scharf creates a legendary face-off that keeps readers locked and loaded on the story. Even the side tale going on has a “big fight feel” to it. The drama pours off the panels inserted in this comic. There isn’t just “Violence for shock value.” The tough moments mesh with Bunn’s set-up right to the letter. The action will leave fans with huge moments but the final image makes complete sense to how this story should be concluded on. Strong work by all.

Overall, Bunn, Scharf and the team end the world of the Chimera with an unforgettable issue. The story has been an intense read and the finale lives up to the preceding issue’s bar. The action is blunt and in your face. The story showcases a reluctant lead with nothing else to lose verse an unstoppable foe. Basilisk #12 concludes this tale with a can’t miss issue at the LCS this week. Don’t miss it!

We’re checking out the latest edition to the impressive line of comics from SCOTT SNYDER for Comixology Originals. In the course of a year, fan have been treated to We Have Demons (w/art from Greg Capullo). Clear (w/ Francis Manupal), Night Of The Ghoul (w/ Francesco Francavilla), Barnstormers (w/ Tula Lotay), Canary (w/ Dan Panosian) and Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine (w/ Jamal Igle). Previously all were only available on Comixology but We Have Demons and now Night Of The Ghoul are available via print from Drak Horse Comics. The books speak for themselves in quality and content. Now on the anniversary, Snyder is ready to drop the latest book to an already star-studded line-up.

The ODPHpod talked with Scott a few months back and as soon as this book was mentioned, we’ve had it on our radars. Book Of Evil #1 reunites Snyder with a familiar creator: Jock, who fans know their work on Batman: Black Mirror, to welcome in the next phase from one of the hottest line of books in comics. Let’s not wait any longer and jump into this “Book”, shall we?

The world portrayed here is vastly different than what we currently perceive as “normal”. About 92% of the world’s population is now born as psychopaths This isn’t an exaggeration. This isn’t for shock value. This is the new reality that a 12 yr old boy named Homer lives in. Why the world is like this is very unclear at the this point, but the “average day” is made crystal clear to the readers from the opening page!

This issue is told by Homer as a journal entry. Readers can feel his sense of dread and fear as he’s riding a bus with an older woman…who’s foaming at the mouth to attack him should the bus cross the “Yolk Lines.” With each breath, she gets ready to attack Homer with scissors. Trembling with fear, Homer holds out hope to make it through in one piece. The moment never stops escalating until the bus shifts to the right side of the line. Just like that, the woman sits down. What feels like an event to the reader is just an average bus ride home for a 12 yr old in this new humanity.

As Homer continues his journal, he breaks down what has happened. In the 1960’s, children were changing as they hit their adolescence range (14-15 yrs old). This change was anything but average as their behavior had psychopathic tendencies. This was never a phase as it continued to spread throughout most the population, with no clear cut reason why this has happened. The remaining 8% are considered “animals” or less than Human. Homer is one of the 8%. He stays in “The Yolk”, a section designated for the animals to live in. With no parents to watch him, Homer stays there with his friends Blake, Elliot and Milton along with his older brother Poe.

To complicate things even more, Homer’s world is rocked with another obstacle to overcome. What exactly is that you ask? And what about a mysterious cartoon strip have to do with all of this, if anything? Readers will have these answered and also be waiting to see what Homer and his friends have to overcome next with a final image that gives some clarity on where this story is heading next.

Absolutely impressive first issue. Snyder crafts a world where insanity runs free and normalcy is all but forgotten. The words “New Normal” are often thrown around but with this volatile landscape, defining it as “normal” is anything but. Having the story told through Homer’s eyes via journal entry was a great play of storytelling. Every emotion could be felt within the 12 yr old’s words. It is truly fascinating how at such a young age (with impending doom coming when he matures) Homer is able to face this world and keep some hope. The story itself is a bleak and disturbing tragedy in the making. There’s no other way to say it, but Snyder never loses sight on how Homer braves the challenges and continues to press forward. In a sense, this is his own odyssey to return back to a time he’s only heard about but never lived thru: a normal life. Pacing was excellent and that final page’s words will haunt readers until next issue.

Jock’s art gives greater impact to the story when his imagery appears. Remember, this book is told in a journal entry format so there’s not traditional panels each page. Emma Price, who designed this book, did a phenomenal job with presenting it. The usage of certain colors like red (discarded terms) and yellow (“Animals”/Yolk references) in the dialogue added more layers to the story. When the images hit, Jock really drives home the horror and bleak aspect of this world. From the older woman’s rage on the bus to the almost optimism in the facial expressions of Homer’s friends waiting when he gets to their apartment, Jock’s art pops off the pages to deliver on making these moments connect with the readers. The usage of yellow thru the apartment is a great add-on to the story being told thru Homer’s eyes. There’s much to enjoy within the creative team’s work here.

Overall, Book Of Evil welcomes readers int a strange, dark world thru the eyes of normalcy’s last figures. Snyder, Jock and Price amp up on the creativity with their presentation while doubling down on the true horror of this world and the story about to be told. You simply can’t miss this book when it drops on Comixology this week. Highly recommended.
