For this entry, ot is time to start a new era of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics from Boom Studios. ICYMI: Ryan Parrott left the franchise after six years of a legendary run after dropping the instant classic #100. In its’ aftermath, both Mighty Morphin & Power Rangers series have been merged into one legacy numbered book with a new creative team! Trust me when I say: The Power Rangers Franchise couldn’t have been left in better hands! MMPR #101 by Melissa Flores (THE DEAD LUCKY), Simona Di Gianfelice (ALL-NEW FIREFLY), Raul Angulo, Ed Dukeshire kicks off the new era with an issue you can’t miss. Let’s take a closer look and see how this plays out, shall we?

MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS #101 - On Sale October 26th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue opens up ten thousand years ago with an encounter with Zordon, longtime mentor of the MMPR and Rita Repulsa, their legendary nemesis. It feels as a final goodbye with Zordon finally imprisoning Rita for her crimes until something drastically goes wrong. It appears Rita is leeching the energy or essence of Zordon away, claiming hos body “would be lost in time and space”! Luckily it was all a dream, or nightmare for Zordon within the confines of the new Command Center. The moment shook him up enough to have Alpha continuing to search the space where the moon is located as a precaution (It’s been off radar for a while). Meanwhile, the Rangers are staying sharp training at the Promethea facility, while it appears sparks are flying between two rangers as well. Unfortunately, there is little time to enjoy the normal moments as the moon reappears! The team regroups with Zordon to figure out what’s going on. Once together, they (along with the readers) hear about a distress signal coming from there and no one is ready for who sent it!

The rangers fly to the moon and discover that not everything is what it seems. They see a group running towards them led by an old friend. Thinking they’re walking into a trap, the Power Rangers brace for battle. Once the group gets closer, not everything that they thought is real. One of this issue’s stronger points is flipping some established characters and themes. Seeing this character “out of character” was a great switch. Pushing through to the palace on the Moon, there are swerves galore (which isn’t a bad thing by any means). The action sequences are well timed and keep readers guessing at who is behind all of this. However the moment that will have people talking is the final page of this issue. Another big figure in the Power Rangers lore is back, and they’re not alone as a shadowy figure lurks behind them! My theory: Remember that quote during Zordon’s nightmare about “Body lost in time and space?” What if that body wound up in someone’s possession and is a dark, empty version of the MMPR legend? IS it someone completely new? Either way, Get ready! The new era of MMPR has arrived in a BIG way!

Talk about making a first impression! When it as announced Flores was taking over the book, fans should have been immediately pumped! Reders of “The Dead Lucky” know what kind of excitement to expect here. Flores wastes no time amping up the issue with nostalgia of past characters while balancing it out with a solid mix of action & character moments. The issue has many moving parts going on but Flores balances them with fair amounts of panel time. From the quick moments between Matt and Kimberly talking as friends to the team hitting the moon running head-on into the dangerous palace, Flores keeps the readers glued to the story. The pace is fast moving but nothing felt missed. There are so many great moments with this book that you need to read for yourself to not be spoiled. There's much win happening within this debut.

Di Gianfelice brings this story to life with great moments fans will connect with. Seeing the rangers interact after all they’ve been thru lately was a nice break. This shines with Matt and Kimberly’s small convo about his interaction earlier wit Aisha. The action sequences were excellent. The battle when they first hit the moon is a great example. It set a great tone for the other action happening with this issue. As the rangers are fighting the bad guys off, readers can feel how energetic these scenes comes across. Seeing how the Rangers react to all the reveals in the story builds the tension for the big ending was fantastic. Speaking of the ending shot, it couldn't have been done more perfect to welcome fans to the new era of MMPR!

Final point: Coming into a franchise after a legendary run is no easy feat. Flores & Di Gianfelice absolutely make their debut one fans will be buzzing about. MMPR #101 Has everything you would want as a comic fan, let alone a Power Rangers fan. Excellent story matched by phenomenal art makes this a book you simply cannot pass up on NCBD!

For this entry, we’re reloaded on the latest tale of Valiant Entertainment’s wildly popular anti-hero. BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED #2 by DENIZ CAMP, JON DAVIS-HUNT, JORDIE BELLAIRE and HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU continues the explosive Mature readers debut story that fans have been buzzing about. THIS is the version Valiant fans want on screen for the Vin Diesel sequel for the 2020 movie! Note: This take on Bloodshot isn’t meant for younger readers so discretion is advised. If you’re good to go, so am I, so let’s discuss the latest adventure shall we?

**BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED #2** - On Sale October 26th

Two things before we get started: 1. LOOK at that cover by Alex Garner! 2. Nobody does a recap page like Valiant. Every issue is a “welcome to new readers” which I wish more companies utilized.

This issue picks up with Bloodshot’s latest assignment: eliminate the loose Walking Weapons who are terrorizing the United States. Who’s more qualified than the walking force of Nature himself? Readers don’t wait as the action pops off on the first page. Bloodshot is battling one of the escapee weapons. However, the BIG difference form last issue is the young boy crying “Daddy!” Before readers can grasp what is unfolding, the story shifts to a earlier time. Bloodshot and his “son” are on their way to Hope, Michigan. While undercover, Bloodshot is questioning residents of the town who are visibly sick. The reason: Radiation Poisoning. The cause: an escapee weapon.

With some further digging, it’s revealed that the Lombard motors factory is the site of the poison leak. Bloodshot makes his way to the factory. While there, readers get some clarity on who the young boy is hanging around Bloodshot. It’s solid reveal and makes perfect sense. There’s little time to celebrate that discovery as the latest weapon makes their presence felt. How does Bloodshot handle this threat? Will this be just another day at the office or is there more going on that he’s not ready for. Readers shouldn’t expect a sophomore slump here as all the overtones of the previous issue carry on stronger here.

Camp doesn’t pull any punches with the themes in this issue. Bloodshot is still a broken character trying to put things together. The story with his “son” was a great change-of-pace complement to the overall mission going on. Camp’s Bloodshot is extremely flawed from his past and seeing how he deals with it in his own unapologetic manner is one of the book’s stronger elements. Being a Mature Readers book, there’s nothing holding the creativity back. Take a look at how Bloodshot and his “Boy” have their interactions throughout this book. Camp excels at bringing this toughness to the forefront. The action is paced well to balance out the story. It’s a high quality with all these elements going on that we haven’t even dived into this issue’s antagonist. There’s a lot of win with this comic.

Davis-Hunt raises the bar up for the art with the visuals featured here. the effects of the radiation are horrific and gives an added feeling of uncomfortable lows to the event unfolding. Another strong visual moment was Bloodshot addressing his “son” at the Motor Factory. The range of emotional features shown pops off the page. It is overshadowed by the intense action sequences when the battle finally happens here. The battle panels in the factory do NOT disappoint. There’s no quiet moments here. The brutality shines thru. When “Unleashed” is in the title, it should be reflected in the product. It definitely is here.

Final Point: The “Unleashed” in the title doesn’t just mean the well known character of Bloodshot. “Unleashed” means Camp, Davis-Hunt and the team take the anti-hero into some captivating directions in correlation to his mysterious past. The mission he’s on here never softens the blow it hits readers with from the opening page to close. THIS is the Bloodshot we’ve all been waiting for. Don’t miss tis book at the LLCS this week!

For this entry, we’re at the conclusion of Edwin Slaughter’s story in the pages of the Something Is Killing The Children spinoff by Boom Studios. House of Slaughter # 10 by James Tynion, Sam Johns, Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, Andworld Design and Werther Dell’edera has been quite the journey of a scarlet mask and their view of a horrible crime. Coming off the heels of an incredible first story, this latest story arc has gone into a very different direction. Let’s not wait one more minute and see how this captivating story concludes, shall we?

House of Slaughter # 10 - On Sale October 26th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story of Edwin Slaughter has been a fascinating tale to say the least. Edwin isn’t a hunter for the Order of St. George, but he has a unique skill set that he’s been challenged to examine a situation of dead bodies washing up to shore on a camping site in Lake Michigan. After combing the area, Edwin has been perceiving this case with a new way of thinking. His actions have led him to sea with his brush, Hermes. On this quest, the memories of his mother’s passing come back to the forefront. There is much he (along with the readers) have had to process. Unfortunately, time is not on their side as the true reason for the mystery has been revealed.

This issue opens up with some of the boys camp telling “Ghost Stories” when one brings up Edwin’s tale. Their depiction of Edwin is that he was a weird loner that stood out. Edwin’s tale goes to the boat with Hermes now with a new form. The children are recapping the stories they have with Edwin on the boat and now seeing that it’s a DRAGON that has been behind these bodies washing up to shore. How does Edwin handle this situation. The manner is something that isn’t completely out of character. Edwin does things differently than anyone else. The overall resolution will leave readers very satisfied as the story plays into its strengths. Plus , NO ONE is ready for the final image to wrap up this tale.

Tynion and Johns close this chapter with a vision that I wasn’t expecting them to go with. telling Edwin’s stories through the eyes of the cap-goers was a great trick to use. Edwin Slaughter has been a complicated character to say the least. The closing chapter doesn’t disappoint with Edwin’s uncanny traits being what solves this mystery. The pacing builds towards the big moments exceptionally well. Tying up all the loose ends worked with leaving some things open for interpretation. The story overall was something and really popped out from just a normal mystery. There’s one scene that I can imagine will be getting questioned for all the right reasons, but the team closed the story out on a high note.

Cadonici closes out this chapter with some fantastic visuals. seeing the monsters brought to life had the big impact needed to blow off the tension built. The kids sitting around the campfire and their mannerisms was a great take. Their interpretation of events came across strong and even took the high drama closing to another level. The third act of this issue concluded things properly. The emotional told taken on all involved was there. The final image will have people talking and ends things as the way it needed to: a different perspective that hasn’t been shown thru anyone else’s eyes quite like Edwin’s.

Final Point: House Of Slaughter’s second story hits the finish line with a satisfying conclusion. Tynion, Johns, Cadonici and the team take some chances with how the issue is set up but pays off big. The creativity shown here caps off a different look and feel to a story that was anything but ordinary. Don’t miss picking up this book from the local comic shop this week!

ASK FOR MERCY: THE CIRCLE OF TIME #1 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re checking out the season premiere of the latest installment of Richard Starkings’ dark fantasy series on the Comixology Originals Line. Ask For Mercy: The Circle of Time #1 by Starkings and Abigail Jill Harding is the latest entry of the popular series with a focus on a few fan-favorites that readers will be excited to see. There’s also big news surrounding this series as it has been announced that Ask For Mercy volume one will be hitting print via Dark Horse Comics in March of 2023. The previous seasons are available on Comixology , but let’s not wait any longer and jump into the season four premiere, shall we?

Ask For Mercy: The Circle of Time #1 - On Sale October 25th, 2022

In case you are not familiar with this series, The character of Mercy is recruited into a war with monsters, who are monster hunters squaring off against creatures conjured by Nazi evil. This issue (and season) is focusing on Becky (who debuted in season 3) and Ratmir, an ally of Mercy since season 1. The pair is traveling thru Rumania when they encounter a spirit crossing their path. The spirit informs them that they have stumbled upon the Forrest Of Silence, and their end is near. This revelation brings back forgotten memories from Ratmir as readers see a heartbreaking tale from his past. The pair doesn’t have much time to process as they move to leave the forest. Chasing after the spirit, the pair sees a young child and pursue them in finding a way out of the forest. As with all good intentions, this doesn’t go according to plan. The pair is led to a gingerbread house in the middle of seemingly nowhere but a group of children. Once inside the house, the true terror begins.

What transpires next takes the story into many different directions. A new character makes their play on the pair. Overseeing from afar, it appears as this new player might have a trick of two up her sleeve. How does this all tie into Ratmir? While readers will get clarification on that questions, they won’t be ready for the big revelation involving Becky! More answers are revealed while more questions get asked. Rest assured, once the game changing revelation is dropped, nothing will be the same. How this story resolves itself will get readers very excited to see where the pair goes from here with all this information.

This was my first introduction into the Ask For Mercy tale and I was very impressed with what I’ve read. Starkings plays off Becky’s innocence with Ratmir’s grizzled past very well. They are an odd pairing in many ways. Seeing how they wind up in their dangerous situation is noteworthy. Becky’s youthful wonderment plays into Ratmir reliving his past enough to be caught off guard. However, no moment hits more that Becky’s secret. Once that reveal unfolds, from here on out, nothing will be the same. It was great storytelling to keep longtime readers off guard. For new ones, it’s solid narration to what’s happening in this world. Th ending comes quick but after the reveal, it’s paced ong enough to let fans assess what just happened and prep for the next issue.

Harding’s art works well in this fantasy world. The fantasy aspects popped form the start. The spirit and its’ surrounding ghosts impact quickly as to what the lead pair will be dealing with. Showing Ratmir’s past went into a different style which meshed very well with the story in the present. Even the sadness of Ratmir’s face in wolf form spoke volumes. Becky’s reactions to the antagonist at hand factored in nicely to where her big reveal felt like a Huge Moment. The ending’s bright coloring sold the image for being a sign of hope for what lies ahead. Excellent work all around.

Final Point: The fantasy world of Ask For Mercy returned in a strong way. Starkings ad Harding craft a season premiere to watch for. Imaginative storytelling and art welcome new and returning readers to the world of mystery and magic with an issue not to pass on. Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter of a second wave “Scottober” comic from the team over at Best Jackett Press for Comixology Originals. The line has been such a big success that there was an announcement at New York Comic Con that the deal with Comixology has been extended! This is huge news for comic fans because in the short span of about a year, this line has hit on all marks with fantastic stories like The “Last Ride” Of Marshall Holt in 1891 Utah.

Canary #3 by Scott Snyder, Dan Panosian, Richard Starkings and Will Dennis continues one of the best horror western stories you’re ever going to read. With the tension built from last issue, let’s not waste another second and jump right into this book, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Marshall Holt’s last ride has been one to captures fan’s attention from the start and never let go. When a seemingly good boy commits a horrific murder, Holt’s investigation leads him to a haunting familiar place. It also leads him back to one of his most terrifying adversaries in Hyrum Tell. Tell’s actions have chilled Holt to the bone and no matter the time away, that encounter still frightens. This issue kicks off with a reminder of how dangerous and maniacal Tell’s actions were. The bodies of the children Tull has killed have been found. The scene pulls no punches. Holt’s reaction is one that someone with his character should have. Struggling to find the right thing to do has been something Holt has been challenging himself with. The resolution is one that plays a factor later in this story.

From here, Holt joins Edison Edwards (or Ed-Ed), a rock doctor & Mabel Warren, daughter of the founder of Canary to search for the mystery at the cave. For this trip, Edwards has brought a Sonotron with him to decipher the water levels in the mines. Once arriving at the cave’s entrance, our trio finds that they are not alone. When members of the Paiute Tribe approach & try destroying the Sonotron, Holt engages in an intense stand-off with a warning issued to him and his team. The message is loud and clear with an object presented that will catch readers attention for sure. One would think this is the biggest shock in the issue, but no one is ready for what they uncover after leaving the mine. That final image is going to haunt readers with fear and anticipation for the next chapter.

Talk about a game changing moment in the series! Snyder perfectly executes a fantastic exclamation point to this issue with that final shot! Before that moment, the conversation with Mabel explaining her father’s theory of “Forms” stands out. It’s am interesting idea that has lingered around this series since the beginning. Holt’s character evolution on this final case features the various forms he’s gone thru. The banter between Mabel and Holt is executed well as hearing Holt come to terms with how he’ being perceived was a solid add to his character. This issue’s pacing was worked in magnificently. Between the dialogue and getting inside Holt’s mind-frame, the big moments never lost its’ emotional pull. I can’t stress enough: Just WAIT for that final panel shot! Excellent work.

Panosian’s art continues to shine thru the pages of this story. With much dialogue being said between Holt, Mabel and Edwards, the reactions made by those characters will catch the reader’s attention. Going back to the conversation between Mabel and Holt while Edwards is off with his machine, Panosian dives right into Holt’s energy of a Marshall on his last case while Mabel pushing his buttons on what is really going on: He’s at the end of the line. The introduction of the Paiute Tribe to their arrival at the cave gave for another strong point of drama for this chapter. The creative team balances Holt’s world to his legacy without missing a beat.

Final Point: Snyder, Panosian & the creative team ramp up the tension and fear with another incredible issue. The saga of Holt’s last ride transforms with new elements in play that have only scratched the surface of what evil he looks to be facing before riding off into the sunset. This book is always a must-read so make sure you don’t miss it when it debuts on Comixology Originals this week!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this entry We’re talking about a brand new series from Amazon Studios and Prime Video that has been generating a great deal of hype recently following a panel at this year’s New York Comic Con (NYCC). The Peripheral stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Jack Reynor, Gary Carr, Louis Herthum, along with a strong ensemble cast. The show is based off the novel by William Gibson & is set to debut the first episode on October 21st via Prime Video. The ODPHpod was granted early screening privileges to the series premiere so here is our SPOILER FREE review!

The story told here centers around Flynne Fisher (Chloe Grace Moretz), a young woman who lives in a small town in the year 2032. Fisher is taking care of her sick mother (Melinda Page Hamilton) with help from her brother Burton (Jack Reynor), a Marine veteran. As a way of making more money to help their ailing mother, Flynne and Burton have turned to playing VR Simulations or “Sims” with high-rolling clientele. Since they share the same game avatar, both are very skilled players. However, when a new test headset is sent to her brother to try out the Beta program, Flynne becomes the one to try it out. With that choice, her world as she knows it changes forever.

Once the headgear is activated, Flynne is transported to London (70 years in the future per the trailer), where this “Sim” is based. As the more time she spends in this world, Flynne realizes that this is no ordinary game. When a “routine” mission involves high-stakes action, the excitement and success lights a fire underneath Flynne to return to the game sooner that later. The following trip is not what she expected. The stakes have become higher. Who is the mysterious figure guiding Flynne in the sim? What has this game become? How does this all tie in with a man named Wilf (Gary Carr)? There are many questions surrounding this show but viewers will be locked in to see how Flynne and her family deal with the ramifications of saying “Game On.”

Being a SPOILER-FREE review, there is much for viewers to enjoy about this episode. Chloe Grace Moretz wins fans over with a captivating performance that is just getting started. Moretz walks the line of a small-town grounded nobody and virtual optimistic somebody with great emotional balance. When given the chance to break out from the mundane settings she is in, Flynne celebrates with the idea & opportunity to be something better. When the dream turns into a nightmare, Flynne is torn on what to do next and if she even has a choice. Moretz locks viewers in with her journey and doesn’t let go until the credits hit.

The dynamic between Moretz and Jack Reynor works extremely well here. Reynor’s acceptance of seeing his sister surpass him in their side-hustle is another note-worthy factor in this opening pilot. From setting Flynne up to be the tester for the beta sim to how he handles a situation brought up by Flynne to close out the episode, Reynor plays his role in this setting well. His more memorable scenes in this episode are when he is Flynne’s avatar in the time in London. Acting how Flynne is feeling going thru a new persona was presented exceptionally to the viewers. The rest of the cast had building moments with the sotry behind Wilf (Gary Carr) being one to watch for as this series progresses.

Overall, The Peripheral starts off on the right course as a show to watch for. Sci-fi storytelling mixed with action and excellent acting makes this a show you won’t want to take your eyes off of. Don’t miss it when episodes roll out starting October 21st on Prime Video.

The story opens up with Jim Ransom, a 73 yr old man riding on public transit. A young kid sits next to him on a completely empty ride, demanding his wallet. With a knife drawn on him, Jim punches the robber in the face. It seems like a scene out of a Hollywood movie, & unfortunately, it is. That whole opening was all a dream as Jim wakes back up and hands over the wallet.

It’s a far cry from his past as a boxer from his younger years. Haunted by the attack, Jim verbally lashes out at his daughter Emily, who is taking care of him. However, Jim’s refusal to let go of the incident might have led him back to his attacker. Jim approaches the kid while on his morning run and attacks him. This prompts the young boy to punch out Jim and leave him laying in the street. This becomes the kickoff to the tale at hand.

From the events of this latest attack, Jim retreats into his memories. Thinking back to his “Glory days” boxing, Jim begins to hatch a scheme to give himself some meaning after feeling lost all this time. Re-connections are made from the past while Jim battles his own haunting mortality. He is not the same man that he was all those years ago. How is he handling growing old & the world around him changing? Is this scheme the right answer to Jim’s problems? And if so, at what cost? Readers will be taken on an emotional trip thru Jim’s eyes as he prepares himself for”one more round” battling whatever Father Time throws at him.

Saxon comes out the gate swinging with this story. Jim Ransom is a a fascinating character who appears to have lived many lives. Boxer. Mailman. Father. Lost. All are various ways to describe the lead in this story. Saxon presents Jim’s story with gruff compassion and humbling realism as readers can feel the struggles with growing old. Mortality is always a tricky theme to hit when it’s told in comic form. Saxon doesn’t shy away from this being an overall driver to the story. Once it hits what Jim’s master plan is, the story plays out as one would hope after being invested in this comic. Seeing the range of Jim’s emotions helped connect this tale to readers without any miscues.

Saxon is also on Art duties hear and I really enjoyed how he worked in certain panel sequences to push the story along. This form of storytelling jumps out with his use of 9 & 12 panel pages. It’s a very subtle way to give extra attention to the events unfolding. The dynamic between Jim and Emily is another strong piece to this story. Without giving too much away, the final moments from this book give readers a lasting impression to take away from reading Jim’s escapades. The book has its own uniqueness & carries many “reality-based” themes from the opening page. At it’s core, the comic strikes a cord with the audience with very relatable topics. This point shines within this graphic novel.

Overall, Night At The Belfry is a grounded tale of one’s battle with growing old. Saxon pens and presents the life of Jim Ransom in a way to connect with readers, no matter what their age. Finding direction and holding on to the past pushes this tale into many places. Credit Saxon and his team on showcasing a well-planted story in a real world setting that simply can’t be missed. Make sure to have an eye out for this book when it drops on Comixology.

For this entry, we’re following the latest thrilling adventure of Mark Dawson’s wildly popular character: Beatrix Rose! The current series by Stephanie Phillips, Valeria Favoccia, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, and Saida Temofonte has been a sensational tale with non-stop action and a very capturing story behind it. Issue #4 is hitting Comixology this week. Let’s take a closer look at what is going on in her world of espionage and danger, shall we?

Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #4 - On Sale October 18th

Beatrix’s life hasn’t become any less complicated since she went off radar after her intelligence team betrayed her. Re-emerging in Japan as a gun-for-hire, Beatrix has become entangled in the path of “Yaomo” or “Demon”’s mission of taking down the Triad. What appeared to be a simple contract did not go according to plan. Once learning the identity of Yaomo, Rose flipped sides and is now trying to keep Yaomo alive and the Triad from killing them both.

This issue picks up after Rose and Yaomo’s safe-house was compromised. Now being on the offensive again, the pair make a play towards Shen Junru (one of the Triad’s high ranking members). The differences between how Yaomo and Rose do business is very evident. This has been an undeniable theme since they forged their partnership. The impulsiveness of Yaomo proves to be a deciding factor in this mission’s result. However, there is a sliver of hope discovered that might be the deciding factor in finding “The Serpent”, the head of the Triad.

Who is this mysterious figure? Readers get a very unique insight into what the character is all about. It comes off as a bit of a surprise but it’s well placed for this area in the story. There won’t be too much time to stay patient as events unfold to build toward the final confrontation. Readers are left with a final image that drives that point home.

Phillips brings everything to a fever pitch with this latest tale. The dynamic between Yaomo and Rose is what drives this issue. They are similar in certain areas but the experience factor is what sets them apart. Rose is the consummate professional while Yaomo is filled with emotional rage that makes her lose focus at key times. There are a few areas where Yaomo’s actions could lead to dire consequences. This plays into the Serpent’s favor. Seeing his story unfold was a great chance of pace to the constant pressure building of Rose and Yaomo’s alliance. The book moves very fast but at no time will a reader be lost. The balance between action and drama is spot-on for this series and issue.

Favoccia continues to deliver high-paced action for this series. Opening with Yaomo’s attack on Junru set a solid pace for this book. The strongest element of this issue was the emotional battle between Rose and Yaomo. Favoccia showcased how Yaomo’s rage was almost a hindrance to what she was trying to accomplish. This was countered with Rose’s reactions as she is trying to protect her while not stopping her either. It’s a fine line to walk but Favoccia does a great job with this challenge. The same goes with the Serpent’s tale as well. Without giving away too much, witnessing how he interacts with people outside of the criminal activity to those involved made for another layer of his character without tipping his hand too much. Great job all around.

Overall, The end might be near for this chapter of Beatrix Rose but it’s one not to miss. Phillips, Favoccia and the team keep delivering on the action while pushing the emotional impacts of Beatrix and her reluctant partner. Where this latest chapter ends will only build that up more so you definitely don’t want to miss this when it drops at Comixology this week!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of one of the best and most imaginative series in all of comics. Once And Future #30 by Kieron Gullen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Ed Dukeshire for Boom Studios. The saga of “retired” monster hunter Bridgette McGuire, her grandson Duncan and Rose’s battle against a resurrected King Arthur has been such an exciting read. Seriously, 30 issues seem to have flow by. That’s how good this story has been since the first issue. Never once has this comic not delivered on an epic read. With how things were left at the end of last issue, let’s not delay getting into this monumental finale, shall we?

Once And Future #30 - On Sale October 12th

The battle of England is at hand. With Arthur’s forces slowly dwindling due to Rose’s surprise emergence as the true Queen, there is only final play that could have major ramifications. Bridgette’s estranged daughter Mary has made a deal with the evil Merlin in return for her dead son Galahad to be revived. With a quick visit to the Grail Castle, the ending of the story appear to be at hand. Merlin has transformed into a dragon with his deal in sight: Duncan’s life (believing he’s Beowulf) for Galahads. The opening salvo is as intense as one would expect. Duncan is fighting to stay alive from a dragon and when things look it’s bleakest, Queen Rose comes flying on on a dragon all her own to save him.

All the while, Mary has a gun drawn on Bridgette ready to shoot. With the chance to bring Galahad back, nothing is left to chance. Readers are left to a very intense stand-off between Bridgette and Mary until a decision is made. The ramifications of this event are felt immediately. With the fate of Merlin now in sight, readers see how a noble sacrifice turns things upside down. The emotional pull don’t stop there as another major character says their goodbyes in an extremely dramatic way.

The epilogue is a fitting send-off to this series. After reading it, I don’t think this story could have truly ended any other way. Who gets a happy ending in this Arthurian fairy-tale? What happens once all the action is finally dealt? Readers will have their questions completely answered with a final parting image that can only be found withing this magical world.

All good things must come to an end. This is a bittersweet moment has Gillen sends Bridgette McGuire’s tale off with an excellent issue. McGuire has been one of comics most interesting characters. Sharply written, Gillen portrays Bridgette in many emotional places throughout this issue. The most noteworthy moments are her interactions with her daughter. Their dynamic has been one of the strongest pieces of storytelling. Both characters have similar personality traits but yet show differences in the final chapter. Where Bridgette is so committed to stopping the threat, she also shows a more emotional side in dealing with Mary a few times in this closing. Duncan and Rose also have standout moments as their connection remained a focal point thru this series. It’s been such a great read with characters that, even with the Arthurian element, can connect with the audience on a relatable level. Excellent work.

What can you say about Dan Mora’s art in this series that hasn’t been said? Mora IS the best artist in comics today. The action sequences with the dragons was exceptional. The moments felt huge watching Duncan and Rose battle the dragon Merlin. Take nothing away form the tension standoff between Bridgette and Mary. The sheer moving conversations will capture reader’s attention and not let go. The final one will be a lasting image fans will be chatting out for a while. Balancing all the vivid characters and battles is extremely difficult, but you wouldn’t know it because of how incredible Mora is at putting these all together. Factor in Bonvillain on coloring the book and how pages pop right off the paper, the imagery has never missed during this entire run. There was never a wasted panel in this entire run. A true testament to the art team on this book. An absolute pleasure to witness each time out.

Overall, Gillen, Mora and the team give readers a highly satisfying ending to this beautiful fable. With a lead like Bridgette McGuire stealing scenes with excellent dialogue in between the high adrenaline fight scenes, Once and Future never stopped pushing forward on where they could go with the story. It has been a hell of a ride and thanks for the memories. Do not miss this finale when it drops at the Local Comic Shop this week!

For this entry, we’re taking another trip into the life and times of Liam Malone via Comixology Originals. Census #2 by Marc Bernardin (Fatman Beyond w/ Kevin Smith), Adam Freeman, Sebastián Piriz, Bernardo Brice and Sarah Litt continues the saga of Liam’s new job with the Census Bureau. It sounds normal, but it’s everything but that. Let’s take a deeper look at the latest issue, shall we?

Census #2 - On Sale October 12th

The life and times of Liam have gone in some weird directions lately. Working for the Census Bureau should seem like a more “normal” job but the clientele Liam has to count is not fitting that description. Last issue, Liam wound up in a dire situation involving some demons. This issue, his journey starts off in a pub. However that pub is filled with Leprechauns. Searching for the name “Shamus” is proving to be a issue. On the bright side, Liam seems to be picking up at his new job & finds a noteworthy solution to his dilemma. After a quick peek into his home life, Liam sets out on his next assignment.

With tablet in hand, Liam steps into a small bodega. After his “ice-breaker” goes wrong with the owner and young clerk, Liam is sent out of the store with no success. Becoming very determined, Liam does some investigating on his own. After confronting the young boy and remembering talk of “wishing” mentioned, Liam is still left with some questions. For better or for worse, he now goes to his boss for some “professional advice”. With that knowledge in hand, Liam returns to the bodega. When he arrives, is there ever a big surprise waiting for him! Readers will be just as shocked as Liam is to what lies ahead. It’s a great twist that fits perfectly in line with this very unique tale. The final image of the book will draw a positive reaction out of the readers to end this story on.

Bernardin and Freeman present another enjoyable tale within these pages. Liam is an easy character to get behind with his “loveable loser” persona. The humor is spot-on point this issue as well. There has been noticeable growth with his character this time as he maneuvers thru the wild workplace environment of his job. Liam’s most notable skill is adapting on the fly. There are two cases in this tale that he’s had to think fast to complete tasks. The initial shock of last issue’s first assignment is long gone. For being only a week into the new job, becoming comfortable in this landscape is huge. It is a very organic pace to his story which takes nothing away from the overall picture. Seeing a piece of Liam’s home life grounded the story briefly but enough that it was a solid change of pace before stepping into the ever-changing world he now works in.

Piriz delivers Liam’s story with a great balance of self-loathing and somewhat optimism. The facial expressions he has when dealing with his roommates and bus driver stand out this issue. With all that negativity around him, Liam still focuses on his job at hand. It helps to sell Liam’s plight to the readers as a character you can’t help but root for in some capacity. This story does go into some wild territory but with Piriz’s art, it hits all the marks needed. Liam’s world is more than it seems and the team here crafts it to the readers with a fantastic delivery.

Overall, Census #2 is entertaining with it’s charm and outrageous story. Liam Malone’s life has well-timed humor moments mixed in with a never mundane atmosphere. Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz & the team don’t have a sophomore slump with this comic, so make sure to check it out when it hits Comixology this week.

For this entry, we’re returning to the “Massive-Verse”, home of some of the most imaginative storytelling in all of comics right now! From RADIANT BLACK to THE DEAD LUCKY and the upcoming INFERNO GIRL RED, what the team over at Black Market Narrative is doing is nothing short of fantastic. This book we’re about to talk about is no exception and should be in your pull list every month. ROGUE SUN by Ryan Parrott & Abel has been one of the best new series of 2022, and with good reason. The story of Dylan Siegal continues to be a non-stop thrill ride with many excellent surprises along the way.

If you’ve read Ryan’s work on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers over at Boom Studios, this should come as no shock. Parrott’s one of the best writers in comics and now with a creator-owned character, Rogue Sun has brought that creative freedom out and then some. ROGUE SUN #7 by Parrott, Nick Cotton, Ze Carlos, Raul Angulo, Becca Carey, and Michael Busuttil is one of the best creative storytelling methods you’ll see all year. Let’s not waste any more time and start this latest adventure, shall we?

Rolling out from the pages of the “Super Massive” epic, Rogue Son hit the ground running with fans with the excitement. Dylan Siegal’s life has been anything but normal since the death of this father Marcus aka Rogue Sun in the very first issue! There has been nothing short of surprise after surprise for our young “hero” since. Issue #4’s reveal is one of the best of the year if you’ve been with this story since Issue #1. With the first arc wrapping up last issue (Now out on Trade Paperback) and a major change in place , one might think that Dylan would have a minute to catch a break. That’s definitely not the case and it’s a big win for the readers.

After playing a board game with his half-brother Brock, What starts out as a routine mission for Dylan fighting a monster in the Gulf of Mexico turns out to be more than meets the eye. Dylan is confronted by a mysterious figure named Ornate, who has a vested interest in him. The events of issue #6 have left an opening that Ornate is looking to fill: mentor-ship. Not willing to go back into having someone tell him orders (again), Dylan declines. Not willing to let go, Ornate sends Dylan on an adventure….one that Ornate lets Dylan choose his own paths without his guidance. From here, readers are treated to a fantastic idea that I’m super excited to see in these pages. What choices does Dylan make? Will he agree to Ornate’s offer? Get ready for a fantastic read and you’ll see how Dylan’s choices affect his future.

When I first heard the “Choose Your Own Adventure” idea being mentioned with his issue, was super excited. For anyone who doesn’t know, CYOA is a book series that let YOU, the reader dictate where the story went. One minor choice could have grave consequences. Others lead to happy endings. Leave it to Parrott (with Nick Cotton assisting this issue) to bring it into the comic scene and make it work on so many different levels. After the events of the past few issues with Marcus and his family, Dylan is in a weird place for the first time: On his own. Seeing how he handles his first threat solo was a great read. The conclusion plays into Dylan’s character perfectly. Dylan is anything but perfect, but he’s growing in learning how to adapt to his father’s world. Ornate is a great addition to the rogues of the Massive-Verse. Challenging Dylan to force his own paths was a solid touch to an ever-evolving character.

Carlos fills in for Abel on art duties and gives this issue a unique feel. The panels are high-paced action when Dylan is off forging his way. When the battle shifts to Ornate vs. Dylan, the imagery of Ornate’s powers impresses. Between the energy blasts, there’s great detailed work thrown in the possibilities shown to Dylan for his actions. The moments feel big and when readers see Dylan’s eyes through the broken Rogue Sun suit, it connects to what Dylan is now dealing with: growing as a hero on his own. Very cool sequence spread for pages 20-21 but you’ll have to read the issue to see those images.

Overall, the most creative line in comics hits another home run. Rogue Sun #7 delivers readers on a fun filled journey where THEY become the hero. Parrott, Cotton, Carlos and the team kick off the next phase of Dylan’s superhero legacy with a story that showcases why he was chosen for the Rogue Sun mantle, and proves he might actually be able to do it on his own. Incredible job by the creative team. Highly recommended. Don’t miss this book when it drops at the Local Comic Shop!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re checking out the latest installment of one of 2022’s best new series. The Dead Lucky by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO AND BECCA CAREY (alog with editor Michael Busuttil) has hit the ground running introducing readers to the world of Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi. Bibi’s story of returning home to San Francisco after being honorably discharged from the armed forces hasn’t gone exactly as planned.

With the growing threats of Morrow and the Salvation Gang trying to implement their visions onto the city, Bibi has taken action to save her city while dealing with her own mental health post service (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt). Two issues in and this story from Image Comics and Black Market Narrative (Home of the Radiant Black-led “Massive-Verse”) has a must-read for all comic fans. The Dead Lucky #3 is about to hit comic shops so lets take a deeper dive and see what’s happening here, shall we?

The Dead Lucky #3 - On Sale October 5th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue opens up with a Morrow board meeting with the attendees discussing how their vision of San Francisco is going over. While hearing the feedback, plans are set in motion to disrupt the popularity of San Francisco’s new hero. Meanwhile, Officer Maria Garcia tracks Bibi and her friend Eddie at Bibi’s family’s’ restaurant. Maria is trying to give warning to the pair of what Morrow is up too. Her speech is meant with some resistance until Maria opens up a bit more on her reason for fighting Morrow. Readers see how quickly Maria gets acquainted with the team and how her help will impact Bibi. Readers will have to wait and see how this dynamic will all co-exist but for now, it looks like Bibi might have some much needed assistance to fight an ever-growing front from Morrow.

This thought might be short lived as Morrow amps up their search for Bibi. With drones in place, they make a bold move. When Bibi responds, the situation escalates in a manner no one is expecting. What happens now? With actions come consequences and readers will NOT be ready fro what happens during the final act of this issue. For a hero that relays on a bit more luck than most, is there enough for what’s going on here? It is a final sequence of events with an exclamation point parting image that readers will be so amped up to see how this all unfolds, they might be waiting at the LCS the minute they get done reading so they don’t miss out.

Flores continues to take readers on a journey with Bibi that never loses its’ hold on their attention. Throwing in Maria as an ally (or so it seems) in their fight is a very cool element to watch unfold. I’m still not 100% sold of her motives just yet, but that’s a good thing as it should never feel predictable this early in a story. Seeing how she connects with both Eddie and Bibi were standout moments of this issue as well. Morrow’s big play within these pages makes sense and pushes Bibi into areas where we haven't seen her in yet, but how they conclude this issue will have fans very excited.

Carlomagno, Iacono & Carey continues to hit on all the points for this series. From Maria's conversations with Eddie & Bibi to covering her moves from Valentine and Morrow, the emotions played out connect with the readers easily. Those personal interactions have been a strength of the book since issue #1. Seeing how Bibi is reacting to the final act is impressive as well. No spoilers here for that but the moment grabs the reader and doesn't waver on hitting it's mark with the fantastic art. San Francisco is ever changing with Carlomagno's art but it does steal scenes for how vibrant the city is to the story. It's always a visual treat when reading this series.

Overall, The Dead Lucky #3 continues it's incredible debut with another must read story. Flores, Carlomagno and the team present the world of Bibi with dynamic visuals and a story that continues to shine issue after issue. This isn’t your ordinary super hero book and I, for one, am very happy to see that each month at the LCS when the latest issue drops. Don’t miss this comic on NCBD!

The All-Nighter #10 by Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, Aditya Bidikar & Allison O’Toole has been a fantastic read when a simple team running an all night diner is very much more than they seem. As they tried living in plain sight amongst humans, Alex became a vigilante with the motto “With Great powers comes Great responsibilty” as a possible inspiration. From that moment, the world of Ian, Cynthia, Joy and Alex wrap turned upside down. The first chapter (now out in print by Dark Horse Comics) had game-changing moments & chapter 2 hasn’t let up on the imaginative story. Let’s take a closer look and see how this chapter wraps up, shall we?

Lazaruk and the “Justice Angels” are almost at the end completing their goal. The Takers, who oversee the actions of the supernatural, are arriving on the scene. With Joy (“the Youngest”) presenting the case to stop this invititation, Lazaruk agrees…but plans on offering Andrea, the human ally to Ian’s team as a sacrifice. Luckily, Ian and Cynthia return to the situation to try stopping Lazaruk and the Justice Angels once and for all. Readers will be locked in for the happy “family” reunion, but all parties involved have little tme to celebrate. With Andrea wounded and dying, Alex (“The Teenaged Hero”) and Joy make a rush to get her medical help. However Lazaruk isn’t willing to let go of his plans. With a chase at hand, the action picks up and so does the consequences….

Who survives this outcome? Who’s life is changed forever? How does the family stand after the Takers make their approach? Readers will get answers to all of these questions and then some. The conclusion is fitting for the series which never lets up for keeping the audience engaged from start to finish. The final image will have fans talking and speculating. Get ready for one hell of a ride.

Zdarsky ends this chapter with strong emotional points. Without spoiling too much, the choices and aftermath of one character’s story will hit readers extremely strong. It’s fitting for where their journey has taken them. Even with its supernatural setting, the story is a superhero one at the end of the day. There is good vs evil and not everything has a happy ending. Zdarsky mixes in the character pints well with the fast pace of the opening. The closing slows things down as things appear to head into an entire new direction. Readers will not be let down by its ending but have to wait to see if this is truly the end.

Loo balances out the action with the drama flawlessly. With the beginning of this book, the pace was moving fast and Loo’s depiction matched that with big action scenes. As things slowed down once the end of the second act happened, Loo switched gears to bring out the emotional toll it took on certain characters of the book without making it feel too sudden. The use of the 9 panel page was perfect to start the transition to the third act on. The quality of this book never fails to impress.

Overall, The All-Nighter #10 ends this current story with a highly satisfying conclusion. Zdarsky, Loo and the team deliver on the big moments and ever-changing direction of this “family’s” journey. Make a point to check this book out on Comixology and in Print via Dark Horse Comics when available (Volume 1 is out now at the LCS).

In the pages of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Universe books by BOOM STUDIOS, fans have been on the “Charge To 100” under the writing helm of Ryan Parrott for the past six years. Parrott’s work has delivered some of the biggest moments in the MMPR fandom. If for some reason you haven’t checked out his runs on “Mighty Morphin” & “Power Rangers”. do yourself a favor and give those issues a read. “The Eltarian War” might be my current favorite story in all of MMPR history. This will be Parrott’s last issue with the series. For anyone worried about the series future, it’s in very good hands with Melissa Flores (The Dead Lucky) and Simona Di Gianfelice on art duties coming on board with issue #101. That said, Parrott’s run might be concluding but he’s not leaving without a well-deserved star-studded send-off!

From the events of the “Power Rangers” series, The inhabitants of Planet KO-35 have been getting brought back to life by the Death Ranger, who used Andros , a lone survivor looking for revenge, to accomplish this feat. Originally possessing the vessel of Andros’s friend Zhane, The Death Ranger has now taken control of the Omega Rangers (Jason, Yale, Zach and Trini) by tapping into the Morphin Grid! With an army of the undead forming, our heroes look to be in very dire times.

All the while in the pages of “Mighy Morphin” (written by Mat Groom), the earth-stationed team (Aisha - Yellow Ranger, Adam - Black Ranger, Rocky - Red Ranger, Billy - Blue Ranger, Kimberly - Pink Ranger, Matt - Green Ranger and Tommy - White Ranger) lost their command center during the Eltarian War and have been pulling an “Oceans’ 11” -esque heist to acquire a new home. During this mix, some of the team have been doing some self reflections on their futures and supporting Jason, who has been grieving the sudden loss of his mother. With no time to take a breath, Andros, along with Xi, Journey and Keron Vrin appear in the new command center to seek help against this threat.

The team comes up with a plan to stop the Death Ranger, but some are weary to trust Andros. Readers can’t blame some for acting this way. It is his actions that led to the Omega Rangers to be taken under the Death Ranger’s influence). Andros gives them a strong reassurance that he is committed to helping them, even if it means sacrificing himself to do it. Once the team fully buys in, IT’S MORPHIN TIME!!!!

The team teleports to the planet of KO-35 and know that there’s immanent danger ahead. It doesn’t take long before they are greeted by the Death Ranger’s forces. Once all the major players arrive, the battle kicks off with a fantastic one-page panel to kick things off! Rangers vs. Possessed Rangers and the undead…get your popcorn ready! There are a lot of great match-ups that will have readers on the edge of their seats reading. Don’t doubt that there is some big-time Zord action thrown in as well.

However, the main event will be the one fans will be most impacted by. Without going into heavy spoiler territory, One ranger’s journey is changed dramatically in an attempt to stop the Death Ranger once and for all. It’s a play that was needed to be made to try stopping the threat at hand and showcases what makes this hero one of the most noteworthy in all of MMPR lore. Get ready for that conclusion’s scene! Is that enough to stop the Death Ranger though? Read and find out!

The conclusion of this comic will be one to pull at the emotions of readers who have been with this franchises since day 1 or just jumping on board at the recent arcs. Some stories close for good, some stop for now, but the one thing that will always remain true is there will always be Power Rangers stepping up to fight the good fight. Very strong final image to close out on.

Give the man his flowers asap! Parrott leaves the world of MMPR (for now) with an incredible ending for all fans. This issue has many moving parts going on but Parrott balances out all the actions with some strong emotional work. At no point did anything feel rushed or forced due to the large cast of characters involved. The battle sequences flowed with great backstories behind them. Possessed Trini squaring off with “adopted” alien daughter Journey and Possessed Jason vs. Tommy are the two battles that hit all their points. However it’s when Andros gets involved with the fight versus Jason that this book picks things up tenfold. Parrott built everything to a fever pitch that when the resolution moment hits, readers will have a resounding “YES!” reaction. That said, it’s the closing act of this book that shows why Parrott’s run has all the well-deserved praise behind it. The narrator’s words hit very hard with how the MMPR world is now changed. Readers will go thru a wide range of emotions during this chapter but that’s why Parrott has earned the notoriety of being such a strong storyteller. Amazing Job!

As for the art, there are many people involved with this issue, but the majority of page time (and rightfully so) went to series regulars Moises Hidalgo (“Mighty Morphin”) and Marco Renna (“Power Rangers”). The art delivered on making this an event. From the initial one-page kickoff battle panel thru the fight scenes, Hidalgo set an early pace for the book that never fell off. The action felt big. This was crucial to establish how significant this battle was. Handing off the battle scenes to Renna never took anything away frm the overall story. Action was moving fast but always stayed on track. Even when the zords came into play, both artists had great moments to work with. The guest artists listed played an important role in dealing with that one Ranger’s final battle and resolution. It gave that moment a unique feel to illustrated what was happening. Renna’s work closing out a character’s story he’s worked with was fitting and added another level of gravity to the scene’s impact. The art teams really outdid themselves on this issue to close his chapter over MMPR on a definitive high note.

Overall, the Ryan Parrott era of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ends with everything you would expect from someone who’s taken the Rangers to new heights and legacy adventures. Parrott and the all-star art teams gift fans with an issue they won’t be able to put down or stop talking about. As for the future of Parrott and the Rangers, it won’t be long before we see them together again as he will be teaming with Dan Mora on a new MMPR/TMNT crossover book coming in December 2022! Until then, Ryan - thanks for the memories and the incredible books along the way! Don’t miss this issue at the LCS this week!

From what readers have seen of him in previous issues, Radiant Yellow has always been a voice of reason when deal with the other Radiants. How he grew into that voice has always been a story fans have waited to see. With this issue, the story of Wendell George (aka Radiant Yellow) is presented to readers in a very creative way. Each page is broken down into four specific years of his life: 1984, 2002, 2020 and 2038, where each year’s panels stretches across the book equally. In 1984 Wendell has just graduated from Purdue with a degree in engineering. His wife is expecting their first child. Wendell thinks his landed a dream job but not everything is as what it seems. However, when that chapter ends, Wendell’s life is forever changed.

Jumping to 2002, Wendell and his wife Zandra are trying to celebrate their daughter Ziza 18th birthday and not everything is as easy as they hoped. As the years progressed, Wendell’s dream job has not been the dream he hoped it would be. With an ever changing business environment, Wendell struggles with a work/life balance. The damage this is doing is immense and leads to nothing good. Fast forward to 2020, Wendell is starting careers over as everything he’s built has crashed around him. It’s a humbling and somber moment, but a fateful encounter changes everything. Lastly, 2039 is a whole level of change happening as Wendell is surviving thru a devastated world. His companion is a great surprise that long-time Massive-verse fans will appreciate that cameo. What is the mission that ties this all together? How does the landscape in the Massiveverse change moving forward? Readers will have much to enjoy with this incredible issue.

Absolutely fantastic issue from Higgins (along with Laurence Holmes) concerning the overall theme of this story. “We Are Products Of Our Decisions” is a quote dropped later in the book that perfectly ties all four stories together. As readers see, every choice Wendell makes with good intentions fails with its executions. The slow breakdown of what he’s strived for is masterfully showcased. From having the optimism of just graduating with degree and family in tow to ultimately losing more than hope, Higgins and Holmes combines real-world challenges with the super hero surroundings that connects on many levels. By the time this issue concludes, one can’t help but to buy into seeing where he goes from here.

Simeone steps in for art duties here and absolutely crushes it! From how each story flows from page to page, Simeone gives them their own emotional weight without ever becoming lost in the shuffle. Each one guides the reader along Wendell’s saga and drives home the points of his character. Without spoiling too much, once the second acts conclude in each story, the art adds so much to those moments that you simply can’t avoid the impact when they hit. Even with the little super hero elements featured, this issue packs all fantastic traits that readers have grown accustom to with this book and brand.

Overall, Radiant Black #18 is one issue fans will be talking about for quite some time due to it’s amazing creativity. Higgins, Holmes Simeone and the team introduce the hidden tale of Wendell George to the masses with an incredible tale proving all thing are connected. Highest possible recommendation at the LCS this week. Don’t miss it!

The latest installment of Beatrix Rose’s saga has been quite the captivating one. Rose has re-emerged after being betrayed by her own British intelligence team in Japan. Now working freelance for the Triad to hunt down the killer known as “Yaomo” or “Demon,” Rose has become locked in on completing her assignment no matter what. The previous run-ins with Yaomo have not gone in her favor. At the end of the last issue, Rose faked Yaomo’s death to help her escape. It was a drastic change in events but Rose saw a lot of her own young daughter in Yaomo which caused Rose to re-assess. With the repercussions of her actions coming, Rose and Yaomo now have a bigger target on both of their heads.

This issue opens up with an investigation into the apparent death of Yaomo. Wit no body being discovered, the Triad has their doubts of what has happened and immediately begin to look in the direction of Beatrix Rose. Meanwhile, Beatrix and Yaomo escape to a safe house to make plans for what their next moves are. During this exchange, Yaomo has to be helped with dealing with a stab wound….caused by Beatrix. In tending to the wound, Yaomo opens up (not without some great back and forth tension) about why she is on a deadly mission versus the Triad. Readers get a great insight to the character and also get a healthy does of action before closing out the book with a final parting shot to hype the next chapter.

The emotional layers of Beatrix Rose really shine thru this issue. Phillips walks the readers thru Rose’s complex situation without losing track of the overall mission at hand. Protecting Yaomo now fills a void from losing her family. Seeing the lengths she goes to save and help Yaomo is a strong point to this chapter. Even with the more emotional points, the story NEVER loses its’ espionage feel. Take the moment with Rose attending to Yaomo’s stab wound for prime example. Phillips also writes great narration from Rose’s perspective to guide the readers thru what she’s seeing. This is anything but an ordinary spy tale and one you simply can not miss.

Favoccia creates a solid balance of drama and action with this issue. Seeing Yaomo’s backstory come to life is one readers can fully grasp her motivations around. Rose’s mannerisms in dealing with helping Yaomo stand out as well. Witnessing how Rose flips from protector to spy in the course of a few panels (see the wound/gun panels) is very noteworthy. The action stands out as it has from the first issue. Even with this being more of a dramatic issue than the previous two (imo), it still carries that same momentum right up to the last page.

Overall, The adventures of Beatrix Rose continue to be a must-read with this latest entry. Phillips, Favoccia & the team present another fantastic balance of high action and drama that readers simply can’t put down. Make sure to check this book out on Comixology this week.

For this entry, we’re taking a look at the brand new MATURE READERS series from Valiant Entertainment! BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED #1 by DENIZ CAMP, JON DAVIS-HUNT, JORDIE BELLAIRE and HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU brings Valiant’s most dangerous anti-hero to readers in a way that hasn’t been seen before. If you’re not a regular Valiant reader, Bloodshot will sound familiar to you as he was the tile character of the 2020 movie starring Vin Diesel. This book first made some buzz at this year’s FREE Comic Book Day and WOW, does it ever deliver! Note: The imagery in this book is very intense and can be disturbing to some. The book is NOT meant for younger readers, so bear that in mind before reading further in this blog. That said, if you’re good with that, let’s check out this explosive first issue, shall we?

The issue opens up with a Valiant staple: An introduction page for new readers or may need a refresher in the character’s story. The introduction here is very brief but hits all the major points: A super-soldier created with nanotechnology by Project: Rising Spirit, Bloodshot has broken free from their control and forges his own path thru the Valiant Universe.

Our story begins with a flashback of Bloodshot sitting and walking the readers thru memories of his previous life. This vision forges into a nightmare as time with his family turns into time in battle. How Bloodshot copes with this unfolds into a disturbing and intense scene: Shooting himself in the head. From there, Bloodshot walks readers thru how he heals from the self inflicted fatal blow in demonstration of his powers. Once again, this is a MATURE READERS series so nothing is held back. However a mysterious stranger crashes into Bloodshot’s life changing the course of direction into the next stage.

At this stage, the book speeds into the present as Bloodshot walking thru the aftermath of a brutal war-zone in the heartland of America. The mission is to find and handle an escapee from a government holding zone for extreme walking weapons….much like our protagonist himself. With a literal army of dangerous former super soldiers deemed too lethal to be back in society after service now roaming free to wreck havoc and destruction, there’s only one force of nature who can stop them: Bloodshot. Readers get taken on a ride to a human demolition derby with nothing but chaos and carnage. If the first encounter with one of the escapees is any indication, get ready for your new favorite action comic!

You want to talk about setting the pace early for a new series? Camp welcomes Bloodshot and Valiant into the land of Mature Readers comics with an issue that hits readers without pulling any punches. The issue is brutal, unflinching and violently incredible all at once. Seeing how Bloodshot deals with his current state is not for the faint. With that said, the pacing of the issue really spreads out what is going on here. Without spoiling anything here, it’s perfectly set to go back to the assignment’s origin to not be overwhelmed with all the action going on when Bloodshot confronts his target. This is a whole new side of Bloodshot we haven’t seen before and everyone’s on for something special here.

Davis-Hunt delivers on some of the biggest action sequences you’ll ever see on a comic page. With the title being “Unleashed”, that is EXACTLY what is happening here. The fight in the latter half of the book has that “Big Fight Feel” to it that one would expect from a “Terminator 2” -esque movie. The moments feel HUGE! With the Mature Readers Banner on this book, Davis-Hunt is really opening up on the imagery for this story. It is almost a perfect bookend with the intensity of the “couch” scene that opens the book to the final moments of this issue. Excellent job unleashing Valiant’s super soldier onto the comic shops!

Overall, Bloodshot Unleashed #1 presents the world of Bloodshot in an unapologetic and unforgiving vision that is a welcome addition to the Valiant Universe. Camp, Davis-Hunt and the team present the title character with a captivating story surrounded by incredible artwork. Don’t miss this issue when it drops on NCBD at your LCS!

For this entry, we’re checking out a new series on the great Comixology Originals line by way of Marc Bernardin. Readers might know Marc Bernardin’s name from the Eisner award nominee “Adora and The Distance” along with his work in podcasting (Fatman Beyond w/ Kevin Smith) and TV (Star Trek: Picard). Census #1 by Bernardin, Adam Freeman, Sebastián Piriz, Bernardo Brice and Sarah Litt welcomes readers into the life of Liam Malone and his first day on the job, which is anything but normal. Let’s not waste any more time and jump into this first issue, shall we?

This issue kicks off with with one of the best “You’re probably wondering how I got here” pages in recent memory. Liam is tied up with only his underwear on while 3 demons are standing over him. From here, readers are taken back to the day prior as Liam is going for a job interview. This scenario seems very normal as Liam is talking to a possible employer with a simple job posting: “ Good Pay, Flexible Hours, No Experience Needed”. It sounds too god to be true, especially for someone looking for a win. Liam gets the job with the Census Bureau, which sounds like it will be a simple job. At this stage in life , Liam should know that anything that sounds this perfect is more than likely flawed.

With a tablet in hand, Liam sets out to count the residents of his first assigned address. With should be a routine count in a Brooklyn apartment spins wildly out of control. What starts as a friendly conversation quickly speeds into another moment that our protagonist was not expecting when he signed up for this job. Readers will see how Liam got into the mess in page 1 and if he can find his way out of that crazy scene. The conclusion of this issue will leave readers with a clear sense of where the book is heading and that they need to jump on board now.

Very solid debut issue. Bernardin, (along with Adam Freeman) create a fun beginning on Liam’s journey. The story is great balance with horror and supernatural elements along with well placed shots of comedy mixed in. Those themes rise up more to the reader when referencing the initial first case. Liam’s means to escape is quite the creative one that does cause a laugh out loud moment. No spoilers here, but it’s presented in a way that readers can only see Liam pulling off. The storytelling plays into his awkwardness in dealing with others as a strength. At no point did I feel that the story feel too cliche and it made for an enjoyable welcome into the life and times of Liam Malone.

Piriz’s art brings this story to life with capturing Liam’s ineptness into the new job field he’s entered. The facial expressions being showcased tell much of Liam’s character. Seeing his interactions with one of the residents of his first assignment to his new boss and what’s revealed at the end, Piriz crafts Liam’s conversations with a feel of uncertainty and reluctance. Readers will be able to pick up on this part of his character rather quickly but it’s never something that takes them out of the story. In fact, it’s something that as this series goes forward will become a stronger focus for readers to get behind and root for Liam to win.

Overall, Census #1 provides readers with a great story of self-discovery and unexpected travels through the backdrop of New York City. Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz and the rest of the creative team present readers with the saga of Liam Malone. Where it goes from here is anyone’s guess, but that’s why I feel it will be one that you simply can’t miss reading each month. Make sure to check it out on Comixology this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, We’re nearing the conclusion of Boom Studios’ violent horror saga of the fearsome supernatural five. Basilisk #11 by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, Alex Guimaraes & Ed Dukeshire sets up the major players for the apocalyptic conclusion forthcoming. Let’s jump into this issue and see how this story prepares for its’ final confrontation, shall we?

The story has dwindled down to a few major players as readers head to the finish line:

Hannah, who is the lone survivor of a Chimera attack, as made a deal with devil after barely surviving her last run-in with the sinister group.

Vanessa, who has become the last true member of the Chimera but hasn’t been able to stop Hannah yet.

Regan, who defected from the Chimera to help Hannah, but fell out of her graces and is lost in direction at the moment.

This issue opens up with a flashback sequence of Vanessa’s upbringing and more reveals of how this incarnation of the Chimera came to be. Vanessa is talking with Regan in the present. The conversation feels like the final goodbye as they go over her sorted history. All the while Hannah has now partnered with Barret, a disciple of the Chimera, who wants to see Vanessa eliminated once and for all and will sacrifice Hannah to do it.

The rest of the story plays out with the hidden tale of how the Chimera came into contact with the cult that has found Vanessa. It is some frightening imagery but readers will get some long awaited answers to how the violent reign began. They also see how one of the last characters left is preparing for whats to come. As always, no punches are pulled here. The build is done well as it now appears that the final confrontation is ready to be told.

Bunn sets the pace for is sure to be a memorable final farewell to this horrific tale. The road of Vanessa has been a very interesting story to follow as she has gone thru some dramatic changes sine the early days of this book. With this issue, it appears that she is fully aware of what is coming with the conversation she has with Regan. The majority of the issue is centered here as new information about the Chimera is brought to light. Hannah’s big moment form last issue feels almost as an after thought but when put into context, her story is just about told so no need to add more to close. Regan will be one to watch as she seems to be the odd one out in the shuffle. Solid build towards what’s coming.

Even with the conclusion forthcoming, Scharf doesn’t slow down with the disturbing imagery. Vanessa’s flashback tale shows of how brutal her story truly is. This book doesn’t break away from what it’s known for. It is not one for the weak at heart. The art delivers on setting the mood for what’s about to go down. The final sequences with Vanessa are prime examples with the big “exclamation points” put on with the final full page shot.

Overall, Basilisk #11 felt like the last hurrah between two characters going into the last confrontation. Bunn, Scharf and company tie up some loose ends while creating the landscape for one hell of a finale. Don’t miss this book when it drops at the LCS this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this entry, we’re checking out the penultimate issue of one of Boom Studios’s most creative titles ever. Once and Future #29 by Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain & Ed Dukeshire begins to wrap up its epic fantasy saga of magic and mayhem. After last issue, let’s not waste another moment and jump right in to see where Bridgette, Duncan and Rose stand now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Bridgette McGuire, her grandson Duncan & his friend Rose have been thru some dire situations in 28 past issues, but nothing like what is coming now. They have suffered a time slip that has caused an issue with their plan to stop the battle with an evil “King Arthur.” Meanwhile, Bridgette’s daughter Mary lost her son Galahad recently and has started to work with her estranged mother to end this madness. Throw in the fact that Rose was apparently killed last issue by the Green Knight.

This issue opens up with a remembrance at Galahad’s grave. Mary is nowhere to be found, but Rose’s mother is attending the grave. It has an eerie backdrop as Rose lays dead at the blade of the Green Knight. From this moment, The Knight challenges The evil King and is killed instantly. However all is not what it seems. Rose survives as she is in possession of the King’s Scabbard. At this moment, there is a HUGE GAME CHANGER MOMENT that I won’t spoil but WOW! The rest of the issue literally throws a brick on the gas petal and never looks back. The final moments are set up for Bridgette, Duncan, Mary and Rose! If you’ve ever read this series before, these final issues are must haves!

Gillen wastes no time in delivering some epic moments with this issue. None will be bigger than Rose’s survival from the Green Knight. Readers will have much to process here. The pacing works and even when the book feels faster in storytelling, nothing feels forced or lost. The major reveal has a lasting impact and sets forth a domino effect for the other characters. Everyone is getting their screen time to finish out their journeys . All the cards are on the table here. Absolutely a must read (Grade 10/10).

There is no better artist in comics at this moment than Dan Mora. Superstar work being done with the highly imaginative tale being presented here. There is an epic battle within these pages and Mora delivers on a “big fight feel” with so much emotion, you can’t help but feel it as a reader. The visuals never cease to impress. One of the biggest downers of seeing this comic conclude is not seeing Mora push the creative limits with this vastly changing retelling of characters. Phenomenal work 10/10

Overall, Once and Future #29 is a comic that simply put: can NOT be missed this week! Gillen, Mora and company set the stage for what should be an intense closing of one of comics’ best books. Make this a priority to pick up this week at the LCS!
