For anyone just jumping into this story, buckle in. Watters is bringing out the best detective aspects of Batman. The initial pages build up the run-in with Scarface and the Ventriloquist. Its outcome would tend to solve everything nicely. Watters adds more mystery to this case, providing a much richer tale.

A simple encounter with a family inside the building proves impactful. The time shows the hardships of a citizen. This spills into a deep cut into breaking the case. Readers watch as the story breaks away towards other residents. Their mounting anger becomes very apparent. Even as Batman works his methods, there is plenty of twists along the way. Watters leans heavy into these moments for the close. It gives readers plenty to focus on, esp. the last page. The writing with this series is second to none.

Sherman and Farrell construct very unconventional panels for pages. The opening shot of Scarface leads the intense showdown into a simple ending. Readers watch as this moment isn’t so cut and dry. A full page image of the Bat descending in the building leads into more unchartered territory. With the panel set-up, the images reflect the broken state of the residents. Even with Batman putting clues together, not everything is an easy fit.

This is complementing the story of Rickson and Michelle. Their page feels as readers are looking thru the others eyes. The art team guides readers into the next phase with some solid action. Keeping Batman lurking in shadows is a classic touch. It ramps up more suspense as the case deepens. The closing pages never shy away from shocking readers. A near full age image of the Ventriloquist hits very hard. As impactful as that it, the close upstages it. The full page image brings the house down with many holding their breath to what’s next.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The secrets inside the tower come into focus with Batman challenged on many fronts. Watters’ writing construct a multi-leveled attack. Sherman and Farrell weave in new perspectives with stunning visuals. This might be the best Batman book at the LCS .

Coming from the previous run, expectations are put in an awkward spot. Knowing Kelly’s writing style, they’re amped up more than usual. The first chapter centers around a “normal” day in Peter Parker’s world. It nails the traditional “lovable loser” themes Spidey is known for. Once the story goes into a familiar showdown does it find its’ footing.

Kelly throws a twist into a classic rogue. Readers watch as it becomes the start of a larger scheme. The writing also slides in a dastardly return. This eventually leads into quite the shocking turn of events. The final pages here carry a deafening take before passing the baton to Norman Osborn.

His story reflects the new stat quo without the Goblin. It plays well to translate Normans attempt at forgiveness. Events switch gears to a more appeasing approach. How long this will last is anyone’s guess. The issue caps off with a new villain making an entrance. All in all, Kelly adds enough fuel to get a fire burning inside Spidey’s latest adventures.

Art duties are split between Larraz (Main Story) and Romita jr. (Normon and Hellgate). The panel set-up by Larraz works well to run with the dueling Peter/Spidey moments. It gives readers a great segway before his latest job begins. There isn’t much time to pause here. A two page splash of Rhino takes center stage.

Events move fast as the curve is thrown into play. This sends events towards a classic Spidey villain. A half panel indicates what’s to come next with him. Readers watch as the closing pages begin here. This story is capped off with an incredible two page splash. It’s a perfect landing spot to pass art duties to JRJR on.

His portions start with Osborn addressing reporters. It doesn’t take long for things to escalate. A would be attacker is given a half page debut. The eventual fight is classic JRJR. It sets up a solid mic drop moment before the easier close. Once here, the art showcases Spidey’s latest threat with a full page image. As previously eluded to, this chapter is juggling many hats.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

Welcome back Pete! Kelly’s writing brings back sorely missed themes for Spider-Man. Larraz, Romita Jr. and their respective art teams flourish in the new stat quo with solid images. It’s a welcomed return that can only push forward from here.

In four issues, Adams has shattered any preconceived notions of who Aquaman is. In its’ place is a magical tale of bravery and grit. Curry’s drive to reconnect with his wife and people proves invaluable. The flashback opening works to reconnect that point. Quickly it shifts to his present danger. During this sequence, the issue hits stride.

Pushing his newfound capabilities, Aquaman stages a daring escape. Readers sit back in awe as he evades his captors. Adams pushes the pace to a break-neck point. Only when new allies arrive does it slow down temporarily. It doesn’t take long to rev back up with a new factor in hand. The result makes quite the statement. It helps moves events along to its’ heroic close. There is no doubt that change has arrived and help those in his way.

Timms and Lokus start of the chapter with a solid throwback moment. The full page image of Mera conveys a calming point. It doesn’t last as Curry’s current situation finds him soon enough. Timms’ attention to detail of the Pirate ship is impressive. It’s upstaged by a full page image of Aquaman’s escape. Heading into uncharted water only amplifies the action.

Readers watch as Aquaman takes events up a few levels. Timms throws in a fresh dynamic with each panel. An equalizer is given a full page spotlight. It quickly becomes a prelude for the battle forthcoming. The art team gifts a gorgeous two page splash of business being handled. It ushers in the closing pages. There is a turning point playing out. This comes to a head with the final image. There’s no way readers are going to be able to handle waiting for the next chapter to drop!

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Arthur Curry’s adventure into the unknown takes a thrilling turn in this chapter. Adams continues to set a high benchmark with the writing. Timms and the art team deliver big action as the King claims his new turf. This book is making a serious claim for “Best Superhero Series” at the LCS!

Snyder flips another classic mythos into a familiar wheelhouse. Taking Mr. Freeze’s origin to an even more tragic place works on many levels. Knowing Snyder’s impeccable Horror storytelling, the new take is brilliant. It is exactly what the Absolute Universe represents. This is no “cookie cutter” portrait of the DCU. It is a much darker place in tone and direction.

This point comes across when “the Rogues” address recent events. The conversation peels back the layers of Wayne’s secret life. Readers watch as the emotions surface and boil. It reflects the pain of losing one of their own. In some ways, that has already happened. Snyder pens the unforgiving view of Batman in a much harsher tone. It results in a few flashback moments. Once in the close, there’s a great twist set in place. Readers will watch in shock as another change has happened that no even the Dark Knight is ready for.

Martín & Vicente step in for art duties. The innocent start of Fries’ tale begins with a two page credits image. Cowles lettering tips off the impending terror. The use of coloring makes the “rogues” portion pop off pages. Vicente uses many shadows to hide faces. Snyder’s dialogue drives the body languages. Marin’s pencils only give silhouettes. It leaves elements up to the readers to decide. These panels switch gears from the tension driven flashback with Fries.

A familiar name makes a timely exit in this chapter. The near half page image sends a strong message to readers. This leads into an incredible two page splash of Batman in the night sky. Readers watch as the Fries story becomes front and center. It reveals a few horror inspired elements. This is complemented by a full page image painting a frosty picture. Events ultimately push into the closing page. The art team leaves one more shocking image before ducking out. After readers see this, there will be no doubt of how broken this new landscape truly is.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

The re-introduction of a classic rogue pushes Batman into a horrific vision with this chapter. Snyder leans heavy into a frightening take with the writing. Martín & Vicente presents a cleaner, yet dark perspective on his latest drama with the art. Brace for quite the terrifying tale unfolding now.

The true conflict of this story hasn’t been the Injustice Society. It has been the struggle of ethics. Does the modern climate still adhere to the traditional ways of crime-fighting. Lemire breaks this down in a few key characters. The most evident is Jade. However, the true conflict shines with Ted Grant. Readers see how both deal with this dilemma. Unfortunately, their results prove detrimental.

Lemire telegraphs Grant’s part in the opening pages. The dialogue with Dr. Fate leads to the challenges of the team’s youth movement. It shows the eternal optimism trying to win. With the deck stacked against, Grant leads into a doomed showdown. There is a sense of dread hovering each panel. This feeling is mirrored in Jade’s plight. Events have positioned the divide between JSA members. A spy in the ranks has stirred the pot. It leads to a shocking reaction. A member crossed a sacred line. Jade’s response echoes the readers. “What has happened to the JSA”?

Their answer comes in the closing pages. Lemire orchestrates the dwindling hope. Each member comes across as broken. None more than those on the final page. It ends events with a somber portrait. Not only has a member fallen. Maybe what it means to be a hero has as well is the takeaway…

The art team opens with Grant’s “tough love” lesson with Dr. Fate. It sets a solid precursor for the final stand. The action begins with a monster two-page splash. Readers watch as the heroes know they are in the endgame. There is never a shortage of tension here. This carries into Grant’s stand-off to protect Fate. Each panel showcases a hero’s heart against overwhelming odds. It never escapes the readers. Only when a half panel image changes everything does it sink even lower into pain.

Jade’s time conveys the same emotions. Seeing a fellow member lose their cool snowballs into anger. A near full page shot strikes the wrong nerve. It pushes the hero to cross a line. The art team sells the image with fantastic coloring. Readers watch as pent-up frustrations boil over. Jade’s rage is written all over her face. Her team is broken. There is no room to pause. The final full page eclipses all. It ties up events with a striking image for readers. There will be plenty of questions surrounding the future after this issue.

The JSA enters into its’ darkest hour with an emotional chapter. Lemire’s writing presents the constant pressures of remaining a hero. The art shines through the dark times lying in wait. This one will have readers talking on NCBD.

Aaron delves into another aspect of Superman’s past with this chapter. The path to earth is filled with grief and anguish. Kal-El’s trip exposes his insecurities with new challenges. Without Krypton and his parents, the boy must become a man. He lucks into a caring family in Kansas. Readers watch as the familiar narratives end there.

The Kent’s struggles against Lazarus reflect the Absolute vision. Their lives are pushed into uncomfortable territory. Readers see Martha Kent’s vision of Kal-El as a sign from Heaven. Hell soon follows him after. The conflict comes right to the front door of the Kent farm. Aaron twists in the painful moment by forcing the young Superman to make a choice. Its’ fallout can be felt in present time. The closing pages do much more than set-up. A huge reveal sends readers off until next issue with MUCH to speculate on.

Di Giandomenico steps in for art duties with this installment. The opening sequence hones in on Kal-El coming to terms on his future. There are a wide range of reactions commencing. It leaves some suspense as events shift to Earth. His future family hits the pages via a half panel. Their struggles come to the forefront. Jonathan Kent’s demeanor can’t be overlooked. He comes off as hopeless. It is in contrast to Martha’s optimism. This all gets pushed aside when Kal hits the scene.

With Arreola’s coloring, Superman’s crash into the farm explodes on the pages. This rolls into a strong two page splash. Readers can sense the overwhelming feeling that El feels seeing the Kansas skyline. Happiness is short lived as Lazarus comes knocking. The panels fill with a frantic rage as the Kents come under fire. Using three long panels, the art shows a bitter resolution to this area. It leads readers back into present time. Key points are hit but overshadowed by a shocking debut. A new player gets a full page image. The moment encompasses the growing danger of the Absolute landscape. Bank on fans having much t say on this book.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.4

“Where I lay my head is home” proves easier said than done for Kal-El. Aaron puts the Kent family through a firestorm of emotions via the writing. Di Giandomenico and Arreola transition the journey form space to Earth with strong art. Will Superman be ready for the newest threat in the Absolute Universe? Read and find out!

This is easily the best issue of the series thus far. Captain Atom has been a unique fixture in this saga. From going along with the Atoms’ plan to now resisting, it has been a long road. This chapter finally exposes why he’s now resisting authority. It’s not a question of loyalty. The dilemma at hand is power and responsibility. As much damage as Amanda Waller did, the writing suggests that Ray Palmer might have crossed a line like she did.

Atom’s face-off with Major Force is brewing with old wounds. It’s big action that showcases Atom’s new power levels. The past recap isn’t distracting in this aspect. Readers watch as the more successful Palmer’s plans are, the greater the toll on the Captain. The transition from ally to guinea pig is a tough pill to swallow. It’ only amplified with government involvement. The resolution mirrors back to the present time.

The writing delivers on a big fight ending to Atom’s current brawl. It also throws in a long term curve with its newest character entry. Knowing the movement in the DCU, this story has now taken on much more importance. Heading into its overall close should have a massive ripple effect.

Perkins and Lucas start events off with a big two page splash for Force and the Captain. It sets a strong pace for the present time portion of the chapter. In the past, the focus is all reactions. Panels depict the slow breaking of a hero. It also brings out the blind focus of Palmer’s quest. Missing what is being done to an ally creates stronger drama.

It all takes a back seat to the Force vs. Atom fight. The art takes the center and never lets up. Readers can sense Captain’s rage as he fights. It almost feels like an emotional release from all of Palmer’s testing. This leads into a striking half panel conclusion of the fight. Left in its wake is a shocking final page. The full page shot throws everything in flux as new players crash the science game. How they ultimately factor in should be immense to the overall DCU.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The rage of a broken hero is too strong for science. In this latest chapter, the writing reveals the growing impact of the DCU’s secret project. Perkins and the art team craft big action along with the painful cost of powers and responsibility. The last page raises stakes even higher than one thought at the start. Where it goes now is anyone’s guess.

SECRET SIX #2 (DC COMICS)

Dreamer. Gossamer. Superman Jon Kent. Deadshot. Black Alice. Catman. Six characters brought together by one common denominator: Amanda Waller. After the events of “Absolute Power”, Waller was left with no memory in Belle Reve Prison.

Someone has sprung her out of jail. If she remembers, the world can be in danger once again. A reluctant team plans on finding here. The only thing standing in their way is….themselves.

SECRET SIX #2 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

Maines lets the combustible egos explode in this chapter. Out of the six, Gossamer has the most anger to work out. It is completely justified on how Jay feels. Once Black Alice makes a bad comment in refence to his dead mother, the brawling begins. Knowing that Waller and her squad were responsible, there’s no escaping the pain. This becomes a domino effect with Deadshot and Kent. Only when the book hits its’ midway point does it reset towards the true mission at hand.

The writing shifts Deadshot and Kent formulating their intel. Readers see the direct issues start taking shape. It is a distinct “honor amongst thieves” feel as the banter goes on. Deadshot proves to be the voice of reason as it pertains to Waller. However, another talk steals the issue. Dreamer and Jay finally have a much needed discussion. There is plenty of baggage between both with Waller factoring in. The result starts forming the uneasy team needed for what’s at hand. How long this lasts will be tested judging by the last panel. With everyone having a different motive, can this team work? Time will answer that.

Segovia and Beredo fill the pages with solid action. Knowing the temperamental personalities, there was no doubt they was going to implode. The mid-panel shot inside the House of Secrets rings the bell for the throwdown. Deadshot comes across as the true danger in his brawl with Jon Kent. Even as chaotic as Jay and Alice is, nothing outshines Floyd Lawton. A small panel showing his sly grin is evidence of that. One other makes a run for Deadshot’s spotlight in this brawl.

Catman crashes the party with a near full page panel. The art team deals dueling panels as a new face-off begins. Events swing towards a calmer pace heading to closing. Jay’s frustration with Dreamer pours from panel to panel. It’s matched by Dreamer’s guilt and subtle scheming. All roads leads to a strong final panel. The dueling faces prove how divided the team truly is. It is clear that the ego on this team will be the main reason if they don’t succeed and we’re all here to watch.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.1

What happens when you mix six angry super-powered beings in the House of Secrets? That is what the latest chapter sets out to prove. Maines brings all the drama to new heights with the writing. Segovia and the team balance out the uneasy peace in between all the fighting. Can this team hold it together long enough? Find out when you pick this issue up.

All’s fair in the quest for soda supremacy. Goro and Kaito are former Siamese twins have become bitter rivals. Each run their own soda company. Their rivalry has become so intense that nothing is off limits. Jon Pyle has been hired by Goro to secure the services of Dina Deluxe. Deluxe may have the key to ensure victory. Can Pyle keep her alive long enough to see?

There’s no shortage of action going down in this series. The writing team sets events up over a dinner date between Plye and Deluxe. It doesn’t take long for the spy life to catch up with the pair. There is a fantastic sequence as they try escaping the dangers at the front door. Pyle comes across as a suave but crass agent. His dialogue with Dina will bring a laugh along with the traditional spy themes. Only when the action pauses does the readers get some character depth.

Readers see a small glimpse into Pyle’s past. It gives some dimension to his business character. The moment allows for the pause to finish before heading to close. Deluxe takes action which doesn’t sit well. The fallout pushes for a timely finish. Readers get one more big laugh before concluding with a solid landing. Like any great spy story, the team leaves the audience wanting more.

Santacruz and Reber go for a calm start with Pyle’s dinner date. The moment plays off the hidden angle Pyle is pitching. It doesn’t take long for the bullets to start flying. A nine page escape from Dina’s place kicks off with a bang. Readers watch as Konot’s lettering takes stage with all the gunfire filling the pages. Events climax when Bahram shows up. The fight is a masterful run of knives and punches. It’s a fun ride while it lasts.

In its wake is more peaceful images. A full page shot of Pyle’s safehouse leads into a darker period. The flashback sequence of Goro’s torture of Pyle leaves quite the impression. The chilling method in which Pyle watches his lover die exemplifies his line of work. This pushes events into its closing pages. The art team mix in a great use of sticky notes before the final shot. It is a small panel that conveys this tale is only just beginning.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.2

The world of Jon Pyle doesn’t stop spinning into danger with its’ latest chapter. Palmiotti & Johnson throw readers into deep cola with big action. Santacruz, Reber and Konot orchestrate a chaotic scene while building an exciting pace. This series is a healthy dose to your comic diet.

Ewing draws out the reveal through Robbie Robertson. He is investigating Dylan Brock’s search. It brings him to the doorstep of Paul Rabin and Mary Jane Watson. The conversation is frank as Robbie has pieced together the identity. Paul plays shocked in response to questions. The writing alludes to his blindness of truth. As his probing becomes harder, Paul slips further into a panic denial. All the while, Venom has its hands full.

The majority of the chapter hones in on Venom and Sleeper versus M.O.D.O.K. There is plenty of action to go around. Venom itself carries a new energy to it during the melee. Readers can instantly sense there’s a heroic vibe to the symbiote. The conflict concludes on a very unorthodox move. It proves challenging as far as heroics go. There’s little time to process as Venom retreats to a familiar spot. Once here, all points circle back to a common ground. The last page says it all with many more thoughts behind it. Readers will have to let this era of Venom play out before judgement is made.

Gómez and D'Armata bring the action with this chapter. They open the fight with a near full page shot of M.O.D.O.K. unloading on Sleeper. It’s a great example of how powerful the villain is. Venom’s response is almost comical in presentation. Granted, its’ fighting a monster head but the move is a but too “Looney Tunes”. It causes a drastic response via near full page image.

The art team spotlights the symbiote pairing saving others. It creates a thrilling feel as the fight heads to its’ end. Once here, the attack goes BIG to stop the villain once and for all. The fallout eases fans back into a normal state. This catches up with Robbie’s questioning and Paul’s frantic reactions. This all builds towards the revealing final page. The full page image leaves no doubts on who the host is. Where we go from here is anyone’s guess.

OVERALL GRADE: 8

Venom’s new host is introduced behind an action packed chapter. Ewing sets events in motion with solid writing. Gómez and D'Armata give fans an energetic brawl before dropping the big news. A new era of the Lethal Protector definitely begins now.

G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO - BEACH HEAD #1 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

In 1983, a G.I. Joe story was released that was unlike anything fans had seen prior. Issue #21 of the Marvel Comics series led by Larry Hama released “Silent Interlude”. The Snake-Eyes focused tale is legendary. It was the first appearance of Storm Shadow. As impactful as that moment was, it is not the main takeaway from fans.

The story had no dialogue.

Fast forward 42 years later and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is having a renaissance under the Skybound Entertainment Banner. The series has restarted in continuation under Hama in 2023. Going in on that success, the line is revisiting this creative style of story telling with “Silent Missions”.

Hester throws Beach Head (literally) into a demilitarized zone when a COBRA helicopter crashes. The full page image sets a tense pace for this mission. Two orphans find him and help him escape. The dire situation reflects the war torn landscape. Hester and Hymel spare no expense on the gritty ordeal. Readers watch as the orphans struggle to survive. This touches a chord with Beach Head. They helped save him. He intends to return the favor.

Once COBRA catches wind of survivors, the issue hits the gas petal. Hester unapologetically brings the brutality of war to this issue. Beach Head must act quickly to survive. Readers sense the mood change when he dons his mask. The mid page panel resonates with readers. Loughridge’s coloring compliments it well when the action starts. It thrusts the survival instinct into the spotlight. Even when one of the children try to get involved, Beach Head acts valiantly.

The fallout plays into a solid finish. It also gives a definitive thought to the readers. Beach Head’s gesture to one of the kids is subtle but reflects change. Sometimes, the past should stay in the past.

The modern take on a classic Joe storytelling style hit a direct bullseye in its debut mission. Hester, Hymel and Loughridge craft an exciting tale with heart and action. It’s a creative take that speaks volumes in silence.

Talk about a debut issue! Rosenberg hits the ground running and never looks back. Annalise starts by trying to play Hide And Seek with a robot. As quirky as that sounds, it works to make tempo. The dialogue hits as Annalise just wants time with her dad, Dr. Dante Alderman. Readers watch as the mood shifts to a more grounded level. Disappointment fills Annalise’s voice. Her dad tries spinning out of this. The result is a drastic detour of events.

A simple game reveals more intrigue as Annalise encounters a stranger. The conversation leads to more danger. Readers see as there is MUCH more going on with Annalise’s father. The writing keeps changing styles. This adds more layers on an already engaging tale. Through it all, this is centered around Annalise and her dad. Rosenberg weaves other elements in-between the panels.

Even an agent’s “evening plans” provide some adult humor before catapulting to the close. In mere moments, everything changes again. The chapter closes with an incredible cliffhanger that will have readers locked and loaded. Rosenberg has something special with this one!

Landini (along with Titov and Wordie) make a visually stunning opening chapter. The beginning game shines with the coloring. They create a retro-esque mood as Annalise challenges the robot. It defers to the more cemented backdrop of her father in his lab. There are a few great panels in this mix. One that stands out is Annalise looking at her dad through a chemical glass. Their conversation carries some gravity with it. The use of small panels help move this portion along to its game-changing moment.

The discovery in the basement is given a shocking full page. Its’ resolution mirrors the tense landscape Annalise has just walked into. Readers watch as her dad’s true nature creeps to the forefront. The panels are overflowing with his anger. This gets flipped upside down when Dr. Dante sees Annalise.

Landini and company cover all bases there. After the stop to see Agent Rook, evens race to the end. A two page spread sends everything on its’ axis. If that wasn’t enough, the final page crushes everything. There will be many questions coming form this series. I can’t wait to see what the answers will be.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

Combining elements of Sci-Fi, espionage and family dynamics, Annalise’s journey doesn’t struggle to balance its’ act. Rosenberg’s writing leaps into many themes without losing the audience. Landini and the team keep a distinctive look with superb visuals. Packing so much style and storytelling, readers are absolutely going to be blown away by this!

RADIANT BLACK #32 (IMAGE COMICS / MASSIVE-VERSE)

Marshall Ward is Radiant Black. In the past, that might have been well-received. Due to the events of the Catalyst War, Marshall is not a popular person. With his best friend Nathan gone, Ward is the only one to deal with the backlash. It also isn’t helping a dead body and explosives were waiting for him on a case round-up.

RADIANT BLACK #32 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Clark, Eduardo Ferigato, Rod Fernandes and Becca Carey continues the Massive-verse’ return to the LCS!

Higgins and Clark put a focus on Marshall’s health side for this chapter. After being examined, it is advised he stops whatever is causing his ailments. That will be highly doubtful. The event keeps Marshall grounded long enough to move back to a traditional superhero point. After his doctor appointment, Radiant Black meets up with Kieran’s team. Readers see the shock in Marshall’s reaction to seeing a dead man alive? The problems with alternate timelines. Knowing there is a killer on the loose puts Marshall’s peace at a standstill.

Not everything is all doom and gloom. The writing teases a more light-hearted Marshall adjusting to the dating digital world. It gives just enough of a break until the mysterious killer strikes again. Readers ride along as Radiant Black deals with another threat makes a splash. This leads right into the closing pages. As his new “friend” leaves (after dropping a “Clerks” liner), Marshall’s focus is back to business. Events wrap up on a more upbeat note. This issue lays a solid foundation as Marshall is still finding his way (both mentally & physically) in a new era.

Ferigato and Fernandes construct a solid opening. The conflict of mysterious assailants botched robbery ends with a bang. Marshall’s doctor visit shows the bruises of his other life. The art reflects the wear and tear on him in all aspects. This is short lived due to duty calling. The investigation reveals a new wrinkle at hand. Marshall’s reactions say it all as the shocking news hits. A half page flying shot wraps up some loose ends. The art captures his growing frustration as work/life balance is not becoming a reachable option.

After a full page splash shows Marshall in action, the art team switches up looks. This is very apparent in the dating sequence. The use of tiny panels conveys the challenges for finding someone. One potential suitor gets taken for a ride via a full page image. The mood shifts with another way with a darker half panel. Readers see as the latest victim is found. It is a striking image that shows the grave reality now sinking in. The art team gives the new threat a solid intro image. There is some action but not overwhelming. This all gives way to Marshall talking with Eva in the closing page. The final image will have the fans talking with curiosity. Another solid outing for this creative team.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The life and times of Marshall Ward take a more normal tone this chapter. Higgins and Clark steer into more traditional challenges via the writing. Ferigato, Fernandes and Carey depict the ever simple moments around the unfolding chaos. When you see “Massive-verse” on the cover, readers know where the bar is set. Rest assured this issue hits the mark.

The dilemma of being a boy scout. Williamson throws both Clark and Lois a struggle of conscience. As they arrive at Supercorp, the affair of Lex and Mercy Graves takes stage. This has been a moment building for quite some time. It also gives a distraction before events change for the worst. Superman’s logo is being commercialized for weapons. This doesn’t sit well with Superman (obviously). The response causes a domino effect that shatters the stat quo.

Readers watch as the Super-couple is greatly challenged. The writing shows Lois struggling to focus on a mission due to Jimmy Olsen’s situation. Williamson brings out the guilt before she unearths a larger problem at hand. Clark deals with a choice he has made as well. It spirals into a reveal readers were eventually waiting on. How we got there is a completely different story. The final act unveils a future far from perfect. Since issue one, this has been the build. Who will be left standing.

Barrows and Ferreira step in for Dan Mora for art. They welcome readers to new love with a full page of Lex and Mercy embracing. The mood shifts to a more serious tone quickly. Superman’s reaction to weapons building goes as well as one thinks. Lois is called away for Justice League business. A two page splash welcomes her to the team in flying colors.

Her conversation with The Creeper becomes an unlikely hit. The art mirrors the guilt she carries for Olsen. This leads into some solid action images. It’s a contrast from Superman and Lex. The choice made thrusts everything into the close. His interaction with Mercy is given a great surprise via half panel. As good as that is, it falls short to the final page. The full page image presents a greater threat to Superman that he may not be ready for.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

All good deeds don’t go unpunished. Williamson sets the bar high with secrets and reveals. The art team give a growing sense of untrust with their art. Everything this series has set up is about to explode next chapter. Prepare of impact with this chapter.

Rarely have we ever seen the League so much on their heels. Waid keeps putting the ensemble into high-stakes adventures. This one centers around a G-20 Summit. When dignitaries disappear, it sets off a countdown to war. The writing keeps the monstrous sense of danger throughout the issue. Seeing bit Mr. Terrific and Superman have doubt speaks very loudly.

Readers watch as the action picks up tenfold. Inferno’s blitz works to perfection. It is a full scale onslaught that never lets up. One unlikely hero cracks the code of events. Waid plucks this hero front and center to reflect the readers watching. The result is purely diabolical. The moment works to perfection, setting up the closing act. Just as things escalate even higher, a dramatic reveal kickstarts an even larger one. The last page raises many questions as reader embark on something very special in their midst.

Mora and Bonvillain bring the action with an incredible near full page splash. The way round panels are used gives an off worldly feel to the event. Seeing the frustration of Mr. Terrific and Superman gives much concern to the dire state. There’s a possible Inferno lead that Mora’s art pops right off the page. It’s a subtle one but not holding back on its’ impact.

The other dimension fight never slows down. It is everything fans want in such a book. An unlikely hero breaks the secret of events with a loud half page image. It rolls into a full page statement. Readers watch as this shoves events into the closing portion. A major reveal is given a full page splash worthy of the praise. It is quickly lost by the closing page. A half page panel raises many thoughts as a curveball has been delivered. It can’t be said enough: Dan Mora is making a claim for best all-time JL artist with this run.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

Who is Inferno appears to be answered in a thrilling chapter. Waid’s writing architects the surprise unveiling through intense action. Mora and Bonvillain keeps up the frantic pace with sensational arc. After the last page hits, the wait for next chapter doubles.

Even with Hal’s interjection here, pacing never slows down for long. The writing quickly shifts into its next portion. Readers watch as the result circles back to a building point of interest.

Carol Danvers time as Star Sapphire has now elevated her into the JLU ranks. Adams brings up the emotions of finding ones identity during her time. It results in a moment of couples conversation. The time gives a more lighter tone before another surprising return joins. Readers will be surprised to see the long time Jordan rogue reappear in this fashion. It navigates the story into a new path. The issue walks a fine line of couples and superhero conflict. Once the latter wins out, the issue wraps with a larger moment on the horizon. Many moving parts indeed.

Herbert and Fajardo Jr. give Starbreaker a solid action start. It’s upended by Hal Jordan’s debut in this fight. The near half page image teases a larger throwdown coming. Readers watch as the emotional toll is taken on Odyessy. Her state is easily shown as broken due to Sorrow. Once things get back to Earth, the art takes a more grounded approach.

Mind-Bender’s attack serves up a strong start. Using half back panels, it gives the villain a larger presence. Carol and Hal play well off each other as their drama rises. Once the old foe takes the spotlight, Readers will have a reaction. It is a perfect time to interject that character as more transitions start the closing act. All roads lead to a shocking final page. It is one that mixes surprise with a touch of horror. If Hal Jordan thought Strabreaker was enough, someone just reminded him that his problems just started.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.2

The search for power takes a dark turn with an old foe re-emerging. Adams plays many hands with the writing. Herbert, Fajardo Jr. and Sharpe play into the high stakes with their art. Readers new and old will have something for them within these pages.

The result has delivered on breaking Shiva to a degree. There’s a line dropped that becomes a spark for Canary involving her mother. Readers know to expect it’s game on after this. Outside the ropes, the story drops a heart wrenching narrative.

Lance’s mother is in dire health. Dinah’s visit to the hospital pours with emotion. The set-up appears to make this their last time together. King intertwines an earlier adventure between the two to offset. The writing shows Dinah desperately trying to please her mom. Its’ outcome draws out a reaction from the elder Canary. This leads to a bittersweet trip with the pair. The writing pulls the walls down between both long enough to see their true bond. This shines in the closing pages. Knowing what is unfolding, Dinah’s reaction delivers a knockout heading into the finale.

Sook and Stewart are never short on bringing the pain in all areas. The latest round starts with a fantastic two page splash. Readers watch the battered fighters still trying to one-up the other. Shiva’s cold insult mirrors her body language towards Canary. It’s a sense of asserting confidence. This round is excellently capped off with a subtle verbal exchange. The panels pack the punch before bowing out to the family drama.

The flashback pages start with a unique look. The panels are not conventual. It comes across as a flowing vision. Stewart’s blue coloring makes these pages pop. It adds to the heartfelt moments between mother and daughter. When in present time, this point becomes crystal clear. The hospital scenes drive with Dinah’s attempts to please her mother. Her facial reactions don’t hide the pain she’s feeling. There’s no better example of this than the closing pages. Readers see how Dinah processes the worst news. It concludes with haunting dialogue with the full page image. This is another strong storytelling lesson creators can learn from.

Dinah Lance’s latest round hits readers with some very strong combos. King drives home the power of family with the writing. Sook and Stewart mix up the stunning drama with big action. In the Absolute Universe, forget all that you’ve known prior. Heroes are much different than their DCU counterparts. Fans have gravitated towards this line. It has allowed creators to take characters into uncharted territory. None might be a better example of this newfound creativity chance than Martian Manhunter.

The long-standing member of the Justice League is set for an all new series. Knowing the creative team behind this, buckle in for the wild ride forthcoming.

Camp lays the foundation for a very unique take of the classic hero. It leaves readers guessing immediately. From an explosion, John Jones is lucky to be alive. A doctor’s check-up clears Jones of most symptoms. It doesn’t clear the visions he is seeing. His interactions with his wife carry the uneven personality swings further. Even when given time off, Jones becomes increasingly uneasy. This pushes him back to the scene of the explosion. What he finds there starts a path of true self discovery.

The writing takes Jones into a dark place in his mind. Coming to grips with the explosion has become a challenge. Factor in his visions of smoke, Jones walks a fine line of inspiration and insanity. Pacing moves events right along. There is a sense of escalation with each page. Camp presses out the rush to the close with ease. Readers will be locked in as things come into focus. Just when they may have answers, Camp switches up the questions. The final page throws everything in flux. It leaves events in a place where no one will want to leave anytime soon.

Rodríguez opens with an exclamation point event. The full image of Jones’ explosion impact sets a high bar. There is a very retro feel with the art. It brings up some hints of a mod style. This works to reflect the spy sense of Jones’ FBI occupation. Readers see instantly what will be the highlight of the art. The rainbow-esque coloring indicates a hidden factor at play. It is subtle but slow rolls throughout the issue.

As Jones investigates his incident, the art gets darker in certain aspects. Rodríguez mixes up past and present panels to create Jones’ quest for answers. This is broken up with a home detour. Readers watch as his interaction with his son is anything but cliche. This steamrolls into a full page vision of the search for answers. The page foretells the bombers past. Readers watch as it becomes the catalyst for something more. Another monster splash shoves everything into the striking final full pages. Forgot what you think. This mystery is only beginning.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

In the Absolute Universe, nothing is certain. Reconstructing Martian Manhunter is no easy feat. Camp’s writing crafts a mesmerizing start shrouded in question. Rodríguez and Otsmane-Elhaou bring an innovative take on Jones world via the art. Where this leads is anyone’s guess but that’s its true strength.

BATMAN #158 (DC COMICS)

In October of 2002, a new dynamic dup invaded Gotham City. Legendary artist Jim Lee (X-Men, Wild-C.A.T.S.) and Jeph Loeb (Batman: The Long Halloween) were making a special Batman story. The result was “Hush”. A childhood friend of Bruce Wayne’s past becomes a dangerous rogue. The story became an instant smash with readers. Its legacy still holds up 23 years later.

At New York Comic Con 2024, it was unveiled that the pair was reuniting for “Hush 2”. The news set the comic world on its axis. Early orders indicate another huge success on hand for DC Comics. Can the pair deliver to the high bar of their predecessor tale?

Let’s take a closer look at the return of Hush!

Loeb sets up a solid bait and switch for the initial start. Tying events back to the first encounter with Joker is an instant win. Batman’s narration walks readers through his breakdown. The scene seems more complex than it feels. Joker supports the claim even though it feels forced. Readers watch as the result starts bringing in more familiar faces. Knowing dynamics, one seems very unlikely. It works as one person is pulling all the string from the shadows.

Hush debuts with a bold strike. For anyone that might have forgotten his ruthlessness, Loeb reminds readers quickly. The scenes play out as cold and unforgiving. It works well to bolster the tense mood. Batman’s response mirrors the sense of urgency. This pushes events into the closing act. From this point, the pieces start forming in front of Batman. The writing telegraphs a few moments before the final panel. It leaves events in a sturdy point with much room to grow. Welcome back Hush indeed.

I don’t know if there’s enough adjectives in the dictionary to describe Lee’s art. Readers are witnesses to a return of greatness. The detail on the poisoned fish is unmatched by him and Williams. This moment gets overtaken via a fantastic two page splash. Batman’s full page underwater scene pops due to Sinclair’s coloring. Even a smaller panel showcasing a new character jumps off the page. This is all due to the flawless skills of the returning artist.

The detainment of Joker is terrifying by even Joker standards. Lee’s attention to the dimensions of Joker’s bruised face speaks volumes. It’s toppled by the close-up of Hush’s eyes. They come across as broken and twisted. It is very similar to Batman’s growing paranoia. The action sequences start rolling as events go to the close. A full page image of Batman finding Joker proves to be a turning point. With the shorter panel structure, Lee maximizes the spacing. It constructs its’ reveal with a moderate impact. This shows off the art team’s skills. They take a minor move and give it a major point. Expect more of this style moving forward.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

Loeb and Lee return to Gotham City with a superb debut installment. Loeb’s writing constructs a layered chess match. Lee, Williams and Sinclair put on an incredible display of storytelling with their art. It covers up some of the foretelling plots. Readers will have much to discuss with this chapter.

SUPERMAN: THE LAST DAYS OF LEX LUTHOR #2 (DC COMICS)

The wait is finally over! In the summer of 2023, A Superman story under the DC Black Label banner debuted. Expectations were huge considering the creative team attached. It hit the high bar set and then some. Lex Luthor is mysteriously dying. His only hope is his worst enemy. Superman goes to great lengths to try, but is it all in vain?

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor #2 by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft) continues its’ complex saga between the iconic pair.

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor #2 by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (DC COMICS)

When dealing with this dynamic, Waid plays heavily off their former friendship. Superman carries a tremendous amount of guilt. Even when the flashbacks show the first “Kryptonite” event, the writing shows how that kickstarts Luthor’s deep hate. Waid keeps Luthor’s ego firmly cemented above anyone he comes across. Seeing where this issue goes, that speaks volumes.

There is a wide range of the DCU covered with this chapter. From the 31st century of the LOSH to the deep depths of the ocean, the travels emphasize the grave stakes. Each visit reflects two aspects. The first is Superman’s unrelenting nobility. Kal-El is fully aware of a doublecross but pays no mind. It’s due to the greater good in everyone he symbolizes. The other is Luthor’s inability to accept he is wrong.

Waid brings this all full circle in the closing pages. The banter between both comes to a thunderous head. It leads one to drop guard and reveal a secret. This unfolds into a spiral of stages. Its’ fallout leaves a change in the stat quo. Readers watch as a surprise weighs in on Luthor’s fate. It is one that escalates the emergency to new heights. The writing nails the landing for this section with much more left in the tank.

Hitch’s are is simply stunning in this chapter. With Nolan and Baron’s assist, the travelling the pair does shines. An incredible two page splash welcomes readers into the 31st Century. Superman smiling and Luthor’s dismay jump in its aftermath. Readers watch as the mood transfers over to the key flashback sequence. Seeing how Kryptonite played into the friendship death speaks volumes. Its’ mood doesn’t linger too long as events shift places.

Themyscira comes to life with a near full page image. Its’ most famous resident is waiting at the gates for the pair. Another full page image shows how welcomed they are. The same can be said for Tritonis. Hitch’s ability to extend the moments is second to none. Each page feels tremendously impactful. The art also captures each emotion pouring out of Luthor. It bleeds over into the closing act. Luthor’s reactions never escape the readers. It continuously adds drama to their struggle for a cure. Events close with another factor crashing the party. This is a moment that throws everything in flux. It also compliments what amazing art has been during this entire series.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The struggle of conscience pushes Clark Kent to his breaking point in another epic chapter. Waid takes Lex Luthor into an emotional rollercoaster with the writing. Hitch’s stunning visuals will absolutely floor fans. If books are at this high level of storytelling, fans won’t mind waiting for another round.
