Williamson cracks everything to 11 with this chapter. Seeing the Joes at their lowest should seal their fate. Duke comes across as defiant to the overwhelming odds. His actions reflect that of either pure bravery or insanity. Readers may actually question this at one point. One action proves to quiet that inquiry long enough to throw everything into high-gear.

The only moment where things slow down is with Cobra Commander. The evil leader is solely focused on obtaining power. Williamson writes him as cold and ruthless as he should be. Commander makes a chilling move. It gets lost in the action but circles back to the close. Readers won’t mind as the action is what they came for. There’s no shortage of that here. As eluded to, events circle back to the Commander. His goals hit a snag in the form of a monster cliffhanger. The only thing wrong with this is we have to wait for next issue. This series just doesn’t miss.

Reilly and Bellaire light the fuse for the combustible face-off in style. A two page spread brings Duke face to face with an “old friend.” Seeing the punches connect gives readers a sense of what to expect. Its aftermath is set up nicely. Even in a beaten state can Duke still appear to win. Readers see the power of “Vroom” come into the spotlight.

Destro’s standoff accelerates the wild action to another gear. It also gives readers a much anticipated moment. I’m genuinely surprised this wasn’t a larger panel. It still delivered on the intended goal. Reilly goes for smaller panels. The compact images don’t take it easy. Pacing is really flying at this stage. Only Cobra Commander’s smaller role slows things down. Save the drastic action, it assist in providing a simple break point. This all leads to a monster final page. The full image sets up a can’t miss event that readers will be jazzed to finally see. Strong work per usual.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

Can Duke rally his defeated team for one more round? That is the question posed in this latest chapter. Williamson takes readers for a daring confrontation with the writing. Reilly, Bellaire and Wooton raise the stakes with the non-stop action. This series sets the blueprint for what dramatic action should strive for.

This is arguably the best issue of the series thus far. Segura opens up with a subtle recap of events. Even this late in the series, it is a nice touch. Montoya’s last stand carries a heavy intensity. Each fight against her allies escalates events nicely. Even when time shifts to Henshaw’s gloating, the edge never leaves. Readers watch the eventual breakdown occur between him and Eradicator. It gives enough pause before reupping to the finish.

Batwoman’s face-off delivers on the drama. The writing plays off their past to show a possible future. Even with the injection of “Crispus”, the mood never sways too far. It pushes the story into its’ final charge. Once here, events unfold setting up the finale. It is expected but doesn’t feel telegraphed. The final pages leave readers on their seats edge as it’s now or never for Montoya and company.

The art team starts with a full page image of the Question in action. Her allies twisted looks surrounding her adds to the uncertainty. There’s plenty of great action panels spotlighting Montoya’s frantic fight. Readers watch as only Henshaw’s insanity can break up the action. The panels show the inevitable dissolvement of his group. It gives enough space to segway back to Montoya’s flight.

The full page decent of Batwoman onto the scene sparks the next round of action. Montoya’s eyes read the situation perfectly. They reflect the sadness of events. It becomes a catalyst for a moment most have been waiting for. This leads into the closing act. Readers watch as a few full images escort them to the shocking ending. With a parting full page, Montoya’s last stand has commenced whether she’s ready or not.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

All roads have led to Renee Montoya’s final round with Cyborg Superman. Segura captures the drama while escalating events. The art team goes big when needed to add more weight to an already loaded chapter. This should be one hell of a finish.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #6 (DC COMICS)

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Bruce Wayne has adopted a persona in wake of his father’s murder. As he sets out to save Gotham City, Wayne turned down his lucrative offer of service from Black mask. The criminal responded viciously. He’s unleashed chaos for a price. One way was putting bounties on the heads of prominent figures. Deputy Mayor Martha Wayne is one of the top prizes in the sick game.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #6 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, Clayton Cowles closes up the Dark Knight’s first arc in the Absolute Universe.

Lets take a closer look at how things end up.

Snyder wraps up the first arc with an ambitious and volatile close. Black Mask’s deadly game works to establish an uneasy backdrop. Feeding the insecurities of Gotham pushes the city to the edge. The writing doesn’t shy away from the anarchy the move makes. A train scene details the lawlessness. It gives more impact to Batman’s need to fight back. This move also brings his friends into the mix with different results.

Seeing this new “Bat Family” at work provides some strong character moments. It plays well off the flashback sequences guided by Martha Wayne. Readers watch as she shows her defiance to back down like her son. Her calming message brings out Bruce’s inner strength when needed most. The showdown with Black Mask is brutally poetic. The writing leans into Wayne’s love of being Batman. Wayne’s ego proves to pull a drastic but needed move to end the conflict. The fallout is perfect for where the story goes. Is there ever such a thing as a happy ending in Gotham or is it just calm? Readers will be locked in by the epilogue page. This is not the Batman we know and it’s bringing out the best of Snyder’s writing along the way.

Dragotta and Martin never shy away of the violent nature of the Absolute Universe. The only moments of joy comes via a splash photo of young Bruce and friends. Even as innocent as this starts, the nightmare scenario pushes the flashbacks into a poignant course. Martha’s honest care assembles as Bruce’s guide in the darkness. This serves as a great counter balance as Gotham falls apart.

From the full page crashing of Black mask’s yacht, the pace speeds up. There’s no shortage of violence in these pages. Dragotta even sneaks in an “Anchorman” homage at one point, cause “it’s How (Bruce) rolls”. Readers watch in baited breath as the savage fight begins. There is no punches pulled as both Batman and Black Mask cross lines. A full page image will haunt readers as it ends the conflict. It mirrors the tense atmosphere Martha and Jim Gordon navigate through. In the aftermath lies a strong half page image for the future. It is quickly upended by a terrifying epilogue page. The imagery here puts the proverbial cherry on the frightening future of Gotham City’s protector.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

Absolute Batman concludes its first arc on a fiery and violent fueled note. Snyder’s writing shoots Bruce Wayne into the savage close flawlessly. Dragotta and Martin push the envelope on the line of heroic and horror with their art. Forget any preconceived notions. This vision of the Dark Knight stands out on its own pedestal for good reason.

ABSOLUTE FLASH #1 (DC COMICS)

The Absolute Universe has taken comics by storm! Darkseid has left the DCU. In his wake, a darker version of the universe is left. Readers have seen the trinity of DC make their debuts. Versions of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are nothing like fans have seen. Their adventures have been selling big numbers at the LCS.

Now the second wave of heroes make their debuts. Leading the pack is the fastest man alive. Don’t blink.

ABSOLUTE FLASH #1 by Jeff Lemire, Nick Robles, Adriano Lucas and Tom Napolitano (DC Comics)

Lemire dives into the relationship between Wally West and Barry Allen to reset their narrative. Keeping Wally's situation at arms length adds to the ever evolving drama. The writing portrays him as a loner searching for something. It's far from the happier version of West we've seen in the comics.

For doing an alternate version, this mystique works. The same can be said for Barry Allen. Allen comes off as a surrogate father in moments. Even though he works with Wally's dad, Allen genuinely shows concern for the wayward teen. Can the same be said for Wally's dad? He pushes more of a "tough love" which misses the mark.

The issue does its' fair share of time jumping. It is always a difficult challenge to pull this off without losing something. Lemire blends the pacing extremely well that this issue flows through segments.

Even in the present, a certain group gets a proper reset. It adds more to the combustible element of Wally and his dad. This pushes everything into the close. Lemire puts some tricks out to throw everything in flux. The result is a solid mystery that has many miles left to run.

Robles and Lucas kick events off with a vibrant two page splash. It's loud, bold and unapologetically Flash. Events start slowing down to unveil the worry of West. Being alone in his mind, the images depict his search for belonging. Project Olympus gets a two page reveal. Things have come a long way since lightning in the crime lab twice.

At this stage, Napolitano's lettering maneuvers readers through the time jumps. This also gives way for Wally's freedom to be put to the test. A full page image brings those familiar faces mentioned previously in style. The art team gives proper time to focus on the West family dynamic before speeding to the end.

It takes two pages to truly bring out the impact of West' ill-fated choice. This thrusts his life into a full page shocking close. Readers are complimented with a fun two page epilogue before running to next issue. It leaves much for fans to ponder before revving up the engines next time.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Is speed absolute? Judging by the latest addition to the DC new universe, the answer is yes. Lemire's writing brings out a conflicted lead to take the baton and run. Robles, Lucas and Napolitano keep the energy high with the electric art images. This series is firing on all gears with much left in the tank.

Fugitives from Alcatraz is something law enforcement doesn’t want to have out in public. The hunt is on the pair. Freedom seems to be in their grasp. What gives first?

OUT OF ALCATRAZ #1 by Christopher Cantwell and Tyler Crook ushers in one of 2025’s most highly anticipated series.

Cantwell pieces together an thrilling intro in mere moments. Morris and Anglin are not good men. Their escape on rough waters is met with much intensity. When Anglin’s brother becomes lost at sea, their dynamic instantly changes. The uneasy partnership makes its way into Modesto. Escaping seems like the easy part at this stage. Once on land, both struggle to handle the consequences of the escape.

Their deal with a mysterious contact crafts a ticking timebomb. Every conversation with the driven Morris and grieving Anglin bursts with anger and guilt. This spills over as they try staying out of sight. A simple visit into town draws rage from Morris. Knowing what is at stake, he’s not willing to let Anglin ruin his “freedom”. This spirals into uncomfortable moments with the towns people.

The writing doesn’t back down from the immense pressure rising. Bothe escapees Readers watch as an ill-fated curve is thrown into the mix. Cantwell brings out the ugliness of society which is decided by the lesser of two evils. There’s never a moment that lets up the weight of what unfolds. Readers won’t have time to process after they see the final page. Talk about a showstopping moment. If this is the opening chapter, there is no telling what to expect from here!

Crook doesn’t delay in constructing the bold escape. The panels are loaded with the challenges of the escape. There is many expressions displayed in these panels. It ultimately wraps up with a two page spread of the survivors. As Morris and Anglin maneuver off the radar, readers see the frustrations boil over. The back and forth images of Alcatraz to their freedom get a huge boost from the lettering. Readers witness the frantic reactions to find out what happened. This leads to a semblance of normalcy that is short lived.

The art doesn’t back away from the repulsiveness of society themes in this era. Readers watch as this comes into play multiple times in the issue. There never is a sense of these are “good” people to cheer for. The art shows how deeply flawed and damaged they are. This is seen in almost every interaction Morris comes across. Panels capture his broken soul as his anger responds to issues. Heading into the latter half of the book, this becomes clear.

One instance becomes a complicated problem for the pair. Switching up the coloring, a red half page image crashes down one conflict. This becomes quickly doused by the final page’s impact. The final panel puts everything in flux. Crook leaves it all in this issue which fans will be raving about.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

An escape from Alcatraz becomes a highway to Hell in this opening salvo. Cantwell takes the two leads into deep levels with the writing. Crook’s art sets the stage with the painful repercussions of their actions. This story is one readers won’t want to escape from anytime soon.

Johnson brings the house down with this latest chapter. The Cybertron portion debuts the latest Autobot in grand fashion. Shredhead’s injection lifts up the scenario. The panels are all big action. It establishes him as a true threat to the Decepticons. The writing gives them a sorely needed win in comparison to the rest of the chapter.

Ultra Magnus’s portion reflects more on the deep emotional wounds he has suffered. The bonding with Carly helps to start healing. Johnson gives these little fleeting spots before throwing more weight on the constant battle.

All of these plots take a back seat to the main event. The Battle of Seattle devlivers on all accounts. Readers watch as the best shots are taken from all sides. Optimus is helplessly watching this brawl take place. No one is ready for the new combatant to enter the field. It is a long awaited return that sends shivers up the audience spines. The fallout launches a new era into effect for the Energon Universe. All bets are off on who will be standing in its wake.

Corona and Spicer put a Hollywood monster fight for the latetr half of this issue. Before that arrives, they give Shredhead a large statement. The action panels leave little doubt about his impact. Case in point is the half page image where someone is shredded. The Ultra Magnus portion is a wide range of fractured responses through healing. Both will connect with readers. They both are shown up by the Seattle brawl.

The art team make this whole sequence feel like a Godzilla-King Kong showdown. Each sides’ Combiner makes a claim for a throne. One stands tall through A TWO PAGE SPLASH CUTTER! The wrestling fan in me marked out seeing this! Starscream and Soundwave’s fight is as vicious as it needs to be. It stops on a dime when a certain return happens via a haunting two page spread. This leads to a striking final image. The darkest hour appears to be setting on the Autobots. Brace for impact.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.8

The war between Soundwave and Starscream ends with a thunderous conclusion. Johnson adds in much emotion with the intense fighting. Corona, Spicer and Wooten construct a devasting melee that shows no mercy. There’s never a doubt at the high level of quality with this series.

The writing brings a question of ethics to the father-son dynamic. Dylan lets a robber go because he knows him. Marcus (his dad/ghost mentor) has issues with this. The dialogue showcases their friction of topic. It leans into Dylan’s brash arrogance to the hero blueprint. Conventional methods are not too appealing. He wants to forge his own legacy. When a financial offer comes his way to accomplish this, it throws everything in flux.

This allows his step-sister Aurie to (finally!) get her chance to become Rogue Sun. Watching the faustian-esque partnership develop will be a treat for readers. Even when the latest villain crashes the scene, each dynamic takes center stage. Pacing slows things down just enough to sense Dylan’s shock. Knowing who’s helping Aurie spells certain disaster. Even with the new “Sun” on the block, one staple stays true. The closing page turns everything on its axis. Readers won’t see this ending coming! Expect this to be a long wait until next issue.

Abel and Marques set a high bar with the action. Seeing Dylan fighting “normal” bad guys is a new look. It leads to a more tense face off between the pair. Readers can sense the tension is ever building. Each panel carries a unique vibe as all parties argue about what should be done with the role. The drama flows into the Bell household. With each reaction, Dylan’s decision appears to be made for him. That was something quickly opposed as events progressed.

The latest villain gets introduced with a full page image. It leads to some great action shots. Events get upstaged when “Aurie Sun” hits the scene. The half page panel lets her make an immediate impact with readers. From here, the pacing revs up. In the conflict aftermath is a few shocked faces. Once Caleb has been announced as back, the mood changes. It stirs up the drama with Dylan and Marcus again. This leads into the closing moments. All build towards a mic drop moment. The closing image gets a full page to convey its message. It is one that is sure to leave a huge impression as Dylan’s path becomes clear.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Sins of the past strike a nerve as a new hero makes their debut. Parrott and Cotton’s writing delve into the rebuilding bond of family. Abel and the team keep pages balanced with quick action and deeper drama. The final page is sure to have Massiveverse fans talking about the future.

Even in a new world, old sins can strike. The Absolute Universe has a Superman. He is unlike the Kal-El readers have known for years. The same can be said for the home planet of Krypton. One factor does still connect both worlds. The ignorance of the ruling factors into the fate of a planet.

Aaron pens a heartbreaking tale of lost hope. The destruction of Krypton is nothing new. How the planet gets to that point is always the trick. In this case, the Els are ignored by the powerful class in charge. The costly mistake starts the road to the inevitable. There’s a fair share of civil unrest. This comes right to the El’s house. It leads into a frantic last attempt to save lives instead of lose them.

The wiring reflects the empathy and caring Kal’s parents continuously demonstrates. It leaves a lasting impression on the young boy. Pacing speeds through the chaos to the escape. Aaron leaves no stone unturned as the fleeting attempt of survival slips further away. Readers can feel the emotions pour off the pages with what transpires. This leaves an impact on how the future Superman sees the world.

In present time, Kal-El is fueled by rage from what Peacemaker Smith did. Finding restraint becomes a deeper challenge than readers may think. It leads to a reflective close. Knowing how far he went, El is put in a stance of searching. Judging by the last page, there’s only on place know he may find that peace. Will it last? Time will tell.

Sandoval and Arreola present the manic state of Krypton with some striking images. The two page splash immediately makes a connection with readers. There may be something to be said with the Absolute Universe and vehicles. If you read Absolute Batman, you know where I’m heading with that.

The pain and fear of the Els never escapes panels. They knew Krypton was a ticking time bomb. The art brings that to the spotlight. There are a wave of emotions unveiled. Even as the escapes are taking place, the art extinguishes all hope. It is very tragic seeing the downfall occur. Another two page spread wraps up the planet’s fate before the close. Once here, a final image leaves no doubt the past may be gone. All that’s left now are memories for the Man of Steel.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The absolute fate of Krypton is revealed in a tragic manner for this chapter. Arron pens a heartbreaking final stand with the impactful writing. Sandoval and the art team blitz readers with powerful images to close the past for Kal-El as he enters a new phase. Very strong storytelling with this issue.

THE HIVE #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

The line between biology and crimeology blur with Image Comics’ latest hit series. Mason Shaw is drawn into a world he’s not ready for. Queen Shay demands complete control. When there’s a mutiny forming, the repercussions will be deadly.

Lieberman does the slow play to dig into Shay’s hold over the hive. The writing never escapes its gritty demeanor. This all stems off the robbery and murder of security guards. The attack creates a ripple effect that’s bad for business. Shay’s focus move back to retaining control when doubts start creeping in. Readers watch as the payoff becomes a diversion to take the heat off the organization. It appears the plan might backfire in this stage as the last page dictates.

As for Shaw, his role in this equation becomes a touch more clearer. The writing starts unveiling the biological methods used. This comes to light when Shaw finally meets the Queen. Readers get some key info before events shift back to Shay’s long game. At times, it moves very quick to fully nail its’ mark. There’s still enough intrigue that isn’t lost in the shuffling.

Henderson drops another gem with the art. The opening pages in the dark swamp sets a brooding tempo. It matches the same mood of Ash and Benji’s story portion. There’s a sense of relief with the Beekeeper’s diagnosis. It appears short lived when an examiner starts diving into Quinn. Knowing how the tampering plays out, it draws more heat on a growing fire.

Shaw’s encounter with the Queen carries a sense of uneasiness. The art reflects the power play being enforced by the Queen. It also unveils a surprising factor into their dynamic. Readers can get the understanding of Shay’s set-up. It connects enough before the story jumps to a show of force at a business meeting. A solid action sequence puts Shay’s plans in motion. This all rolls over into the final page. A near full page image indicates the business is drawing more attention than meets the eye.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The sophomore chapter of the bio-crime noir saga builds up some key character moments. Lieberman’s writing dabbles into the long build of Shay’s moves. Henderson and Azpiazu capture the dark nature of dirty business with the art. Sit back and buckle in. This is a long build with a huge payoff coming.

Watters throws many elements into what first appears to be a more simplistic case. Bledin Towers is responsible for one homicide. The writing mirrors the tough environment and people refusing to leave. Batman’s approach is straight-forward. It isn’t as detailed on one may think. Once inside, the secrets become more unveiled. The results create a very strong tale of deception.

Working through the labyrinth type building becomes difficult. The dangers lie within the residents themselves. They come off as rough and unforgiving to the city. There is a fair share of quick action before heading to close. During this portion, Batman’s inexperience comes into play. Watters sets the stage with a horrific discovery. Once Batman finds out, it’s too late. The opening chapter leaves with a haunting scenario unforeseen. Readers will be surprised to find the horror scenario play out. It gives a great mic drop ending that won’t be overlooked.

Sherman adds a flair of 70’s spy art into the pages here. The opening page with the murder pops with the crashing visuals. Farrell’s coloring makes the fall stand out. This shifts to Batman’s assault on the complex. The graffiti blended into the credits door is brilliant. It is quickly upstages by a gorgeous two page splash. The deceptive nature of the building starts coming into focus.

Panel structure is another strength in this issue. There are many instances where the “normal” search feels fresh and new. Using multiple curve edges gives the pages a distinct vibe. Readers will want to keep an eye out for a page later in the book with a quiet easter egg. The panels mirror the face of the main villain in the case. Nothing will prepare them for the final pages. Both are incredible visual statements. All are full page exclamation points to wrap things up for now but hopefully not long.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.6

Diving into the past of Batman’s detective days can be a challenge. Watters, Sherman and the team put together a near perfect start for the latest case. Excellent writing builds the foundation for a mystery. The incredible visuals of Sherman evoke a throwback mod-esque feel that gives this tale a unique presence. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this.

Camp presents many elements for this debut chapter Ashley is a reluctant lead in this new world. Her “normal” day is compromised by an ever changing environment. From day to day, there is no certainty of what to expect. Ice Ages to deadly viruses are common day occurrences. Hollywood filmmakers are cashing in on the damaged surroundings. All the while, Ashley is trying to live a normal life. The results are far from that.

Events take more of a personal turn as she moves onward. Readers see the toll taken as time displaces everything. The writing isn’t afraid to take events into dark places. Ultimately, this story is Ashley’s. Readers can sympathize with her fading hope. It centers to an antique clock with sentimental value. Even when there is some sense of compliance, moods turns quickly back into wanting normalcy. The close throws everything into the air as events change again. Its’ fallout leaves many questions in its wake. If this is any indication of what to expect, readers will be happily surprised at what they witness.

Zawadzki and Bellaire set up pages with unconventional panels. The technique mirrors the unstable periods crashing this world. Ashley’s “normal” start is sprinkled in with some of the time variables. A two page splash indicates she is part of a larger production…or vice versa. Bellaire’s coloring brings out the most of these displaced moments. It gives a very distinct uncertainty of what to expect.

The moments with Clock shops jump out from most scenes. From the lettering to the colors, everything about these pages pop. Ashley’s more regular moments are filled with steady emotional reactions. Trying to process what’s unfolding is not easy. The art team demonstrate the ever-changing expressions with ease. This leads right into the strong close. Using new coloring, the event feels different. Paired with the faster tempo and it leaves readers questioning much. This is exactly what you want for a debut.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

The concept of time displacement is always a gamble for comics. Within these pages, a new perspective is given. Camp crafts a story of pain and loss through a consistently evolving lead. Zawadzki and company take fresh approaches to display the combustible surroundings. The Hype is real! This is absolutely going to blow people away!

The writing throws in a few more surprises with the reveals. One cameo plays off another DC series happening right now. Seeing synergy in this level is a true treat for readers. The ending ties everything back full circle. It leaves readers with a sense of curiosity as the travels of Arthur Curry takes a big detour.

Atrocitus returns in Lantern lore loudly. Seeing his rage pour on the page is a welcomed sight. It leads the story into a few directions. Kilowog and Razer are caught in the crossfire. Readers are going to be more locked in with Shiera and Stewart. Their feelings are almost as hard to kill as they are. The showdown with Atrocitus lives up to billing. It’s an intense melee that needs to be ran back soon. Once the ending kicks into gear, all parties are thrown a big curve before departing. The remains of Hawkworld leave many questions as their true meanings will keep readers guessing until next time.

Pasarin and the art team don’t delay in showing the Civil Corps fallout. A full page image emerges leaving the audience in awe. This provides a small break between Hawkwoman and Stewart’s brewing reactions. It all becomes short lived as the main antagonist here debuts in style.

Their plans of raiding a vault don’t go according to plan. Events shift gears into a electric fight for survival. The writing escalates the battle extremely well. It’s a gradual build until the big move taken to secure victory. Readers watch as the gamble works and doesn’t. The outcome casts Kai onto an all too familiar landscape. Readers watch as their location carries its’ own unique story. The closing pages leave things on a solid foundation. There’s nowhere to go but up from this conclusion.

Smallman and William give the Queen a regal welcome to the chapter. The near full page image of her addressing her people elevates impressions. Shrush and Xander’s debriefing packs a sense of fraud when the details are presses. The images depict more is not being shared by all parties. In contrast, it appears Kai and his group are on the same thought concerning their task.

Their location is compromised in a bold full page spread. It’s non stop action from this point. readers ride along as the group scrambles to survive the Zynitec attack. Just when they think they’ve escaped, another full page image shows how futile their attempt was. Many tricks are pulled out to escape this conflict. The result is a new planet with unstable energy it gives off. Another full page shot oversees this new landscape. This leads to the closing images. They will strike a chord with how human they make Kai. It’s a moment of peace in a very conflict driven chapter. Readers will be wondering what’s next from this challenging series.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

The latest chapter of an Arc’s rebellion pushes events right along. Solid writing brings out Kai’s frantic quest to fight back. Stallman and the team build an exciting stand-off which only leads to more trouble. Readers had better settle in for another wild ride of intrigue and intensity.

With their backs against the wall, the JSA’s elder guard close the chapter down. Knowing their fate is uncertain, it’s a solid landing spot to pause events on. Brace for a big arc finale.

Olortegui returns to art duties w/ Guerrero after one issue off. Hawkman’s showdown with Woton’s troops begins with a full page shot. It is quickly followed by a stellar two page spread of the calvary swooping in. Events turn to Dr. Mid-Nite’s escape. Pacing moves fast to hit the key areas. This style helps with such a large ensemble cast.

Obsidian and Jakeem get a distinct two page image to break down their troubles. It gets upstages by Jade’s saga. Her broken reactions convey the sense of loss to the readers. It quickly shifts into rage as the pieces of the evil puzzle come into focus. Event close off with an intense two page image of the assault on Fate’s tower. There’s no way anyone sees this and isn’t impressed. This leads into the closing image of the heroes. Knowing what’s outside, the sense of impending danger simply can’t be ignored.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.1

The march to “Ragnarök” continues with a fast moving chapter. Lemire packs the writing with a dire feel. Olortegui returns to construct a path where the heroes may not make it out in one piece. If looking for a classic superhero saga, look no further.

With great power comes greater measures. In the wake of Amanda Waller’s attack on the DCU superpowered community, there have been complications. Some has their powers transferred away. Ryan Choi and Ray Palmer have attempted to solve this problem. The only question following them is: was the cost too much?

In its’ strongest moments, readers are getting the set-up for the tragic fall of Captain Atom. When the moments gel, there is something that cements the story’s importance. This isn’t fluid to do the structure of past vs. present. It proves more difficult to put the pieces together due to its time hopping. There is one moment that really stands out throughout the jumping.

After Choi and Palmer have proved another test worked, a disturbance erupts on the tower. Readers watch as a noble Captain deals with it head on. The rescue might have tipped the writers hand as how the present takes shape. Once in the close, the ending plays off this set-up well. It also throws Palmer into a polarizing light. His actions through this series have had some suspicion. This really comes to fruition here. The issue bows out with a great cliffhanger that proves the project becomes even more complicated.

Perkins and Lucas show a happier side of the troubled Captain with a full page image. This goes against his present state. The facial expressions tell the struggle and pain Atom is dealing with. Readers watch as the burden of Power becomes too heavy.

The rescue pages begin with the painful ordeal of power switching. As the Atoms celebrate, Atom Smasher is screaming. This is an indicator of how their project isn’t exactly safe. there’s no time to rest when the Tower is rocked in its’ Triage Unit. A two-page spread shows the mad state unfolding. Palmer’s fearful look spells certain disaster. Captain Atom makes an effort to save the day with a half page image. The results (imo) can be seen in the closing pages. Before readers get the payoff, a familar face crashes. The final full page shot leaves a hint of excitement as things wrap up.

OVERALL GRADE: 7.9

Three issues in and the structure style hampers what should be a pay-off in waiting. The writing hones in on the painful saga of Captain Atom. Each panel mirrors the deadly grind to solve this overbearing dilemma. Once the closing page hits, readers are left with a showdown that will either make or break the project. The choice is theirs.

In the wake of “Absolute Power”, things have changed. Amanda Waller is a shell of herself. This is all due to the actions of Dreamer. All of her memories and secrets are hidden. Without her main weapon, Waller tries to survive in a world that isn’t on her side.

It doesn’t make things easier that Waller has disappeared from her jail cell. This causes Dreamer to reach out to Gossamer and Superman Jon Kent for help. Knowing the deep wounds from Waller’s last attack, the trio knows this will not be an easy problem to solve.

SECRET SIX #1 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands debuts a new version of the legendary team!

The grasp of Amanda Waller haunts heroes trying to move forward. Maines dives into three characters still reeling from the DC event. Dreamer’s visions push her into two other reeling victims for Waller. Jon Kent and Jay Nakamura have their own personal demons to fight. The writing never backs down from the emotional tolls taken. Once all parties meet does the story finally gets flying.

In searching for Waller, tensions start boiling. Between Nakamura and Dreamer’s drama is Jon Kent still sorting things out. As a former pawn cyborg of Waller, there is much guilt to bear. Maines brings this out of him before ascending the conflict. Readers watch as pacing moves their search to some familiar territory. Action starts unfolding as a choice has been made. This leads into the shocking close. Once here, the chapter leaves off with some big questions. It’s enough to lock in a return where things have gone from bad to worse.

Segovia and Beredo kick things off with a fast paced action sequence with Jon Kent. It draws out the lasting effects of what Waller did to him. This emotion carries over to Dreamer in the next pages. The nightmare scenario playing out mirrors the eerie sense of guilt burdening Dreamer. It is in contrast to Gossamer’s anger. Each panel escalates these feelings. All come to a boil with a full page meeting between all three parties.

The break-in to Belle Reve delivers a fair share of surprises. Gossamer’s snarky attitude is very evident. Even with use of a special card, the moment doesn’t overtake this. It kicks off a very frantic closing act. Readers watch as the heroes’ search for answers goes off the rails. There’s plenty of action to keep things moving. Once settled, the final page adds more questions. It’s a half page image which will have fans talking. How this will all play out is anyone’s guess.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.3

With Amanda Waller off the grid, the DCU can’t be safe. Maines welcomes readers into this combustible line-up with solid writing. Segovia and Beredo construct strong images as a reluctant team forms to deal with the root of many problems. Welcome Back Secret Six.

Taylor keeps peeling the layers back on the Dark Knight’s guard. The opening pages of trying to save Spencer Robertson hit their marks. On display is an (almost) emotional moment when Spencer sings Batman’s praises. The writing has allowed for timeframes like this to sneak through. It is refreshing to see this as it’s not overbearing. This causes the writing to shift gears back into detective business. The result is well worth the set-up.

Damian Wayne’s portion of the story is a perfect mix of humorous and heart-warming. Protecting a young inmate from abuse puts the mission in danger. The writing shows that even in this chaotic moment, a hero still shines. This opens up more possibilities as Asema’s schemes come to light. The closing pages shed more light onto the Dynamic Duo. It’s a great family break from the story. What follows returns everything full circle. The closing page leaves a solid cliffhanger to tide readers over. You can’t ask much more for a better set-up.

Janin brings out the emotional side of Batman in the opening pages. The close ups of Batman and Spencer tell their own reflective tale. Pacing pushes Batman’s rescue attempt. His small reactions to Spencer’s omissions make a big splash. This rolls into the next few pages before a different course is taken.

The juvenile prison takes on a life of its’ own with the art. A dangerous and shadowy feel takes over panels. This doesn’t let up until a moment changes everything. Panel set-up works to showcase the various reactions to Damian’s fight. It results in a half page crazy image with a Batman smile to send it home. Damian’s back and forth with his father never loses steam. The images convey that point clear to the readers. Events close with an intriguing final page. Another visually stellar issue to check out.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The fight against Asema takes a personal turn with its’ latest chapter. Taylor’s writing brings out the fatherly aspect of Batman as the case heats up. Janin and Abbott craft phenomenal images that not only elevate the story but Damian Wayne’s heroic side. This story keeps getting better and better.

Once back in present time, Thompson throws a well placed curve into the mix. The attack Diana throws down is massive. It is not one without consequence. Readers watch as she takes an orthodox strike at stopping the creature. The fallout is fitting for the measure taken. Readers watch as Diana grows in her confidence as a warrior. It appears to be challenged yet again by the ending. Brace for a shocking ending that Diana may not be able to handle.

Sherman and Bellaire deliver on the championship bout at hand. The Tetracide comes off as menacing as one would think. Diana is presented in big page images. It’s an instant connection with readers. Stakes feel instantly monumental. Coming off the detailed backstory of her weapon, Diana’s attack grows further.

The final images open up an uncertain path that will have fans talking.

The Tetracide and Diana face-off in an intense confrontation in this latest chapter. Thompson hits on some creative takes with the writing. Sherman, Bellaire and Carey stage the monstrous bout with fantastic art. Welcome to a brand new era that you shouldn’t miss.

As we enter the championship rounds of this series, Lance looks to mount a comeback. Losing Ted Grant in her corner might have been the spark she needed to kickstart her drive. Will it be enough?

For this chapter, King shifts the flashback portion to Lance’s first meeting with Oliver Queen. The writing showcases the awkward encounter superbly. Queen’s brash arrogance is served humble pie immediately. This carries through to Dinah’s conversation with her mother. The usage of text messages really pops this portion of story. It puts a stamp on their beginnings as a couple before jumping back into the fight.

The pacing of the fight escalates just enough for readers. It doesn’t feel forced or rushed. Lance’s controlled rage pours off the pages. Once the momentum swings, a sense of victory start to form. The writing stages a quick dip to a more recent moment with Dinah and her mother. It helps to break the fast moving action. All roads lead back to the match. As Lance goes on for the finish, the dialogue shows something more. Readers see what is driving Lance. The ending throws a curve into the mix as a question is left to ponder until next time. Very solid close.

Sook and Stewart never shy from bringing out Dinah’s rage. Cowles’ lettering sets the brutal opening stages off to the races. Readers watch as Lance goes in for the finish with sheer brutality. It is a side of her that has been brooding. Her emotional release shines through these panels. The anger turns into a demanding point. With an homage to a classic Batman moment, readers watch in awe. Its’ conclusion is left with a note of validity. Dinah’s face speaks volumes after the bell rings for this chapter.

The flashback points hit their marks. A full page image of Dinah “greeting” Ollie will draw a reaction. Sook mixes in a unique panel style for this portion. Using Flip phone screens to structure makes the normal conversation jump out. It’s a fun segment before everything flashes back to the present. Dinah’s “night out” with her mother carries a range of emotions. The drive displayed pushes Dinah into the closing of the book. Watching her eyes in the parting shot conveys much to the audience until next time.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.9

The latest round pushes Dinah Lance into her last shot to victory. King blends in a touching flashback in between the fight inside. Sook, Stewart and Cowles construct distinct images layering Dinah’s road to winning. Brace for another hard-hitting chapter.
